Guys, this is your warning.
Starting point is 00:00:30 We do swear occasionally. Every now and then, we'll say the word. Sometimes. Sometimes. And even maybe. But don't let that put you off with nice people. We beep them out. Like your kids can listen.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Enjoy. And cross strikes in the first over. It's Waddingham. Looking for. Hartley balls. Down the track comes scoring. This time she connects. It's either six or out. It's six. Hello and welcome to the emergency no balls of cricket podcast episode with me Alex Hartley. Me Kay Cross. Alex Hartley.
Starting point is 00:01:27 The excitement got to you a little bit. I think it has. I was trying to think about something really clever to say and like, and the England World Cup champions. Well, we're not with them, but they are here at the ground where I am right now. Wow, wow, wow, wow.
Starting point is 00:01:44 I can hear them more than I can hear you right now. Yep, do apologise about that, but I'm in the commentary box. We've got the team. They're still out on the field. I've actually got David Willie's kids, Josh Butler's kids, playing with the ribbon that goes up,
Starting point is 00:02:00 into the air, in front of the champion's sign, and they're just running around, throwing balls in the air. It is the cutest thing I've ever seen. To be fair, I did see Ben Stokes playing with those ribbons a little bit earlier and putting them on Rick Gleason's head, so they must be a good time. Well, I did see all the families playing with their kids, and Ben Stokes neck in a bottle of champagne, and I wouldn't have it any other way. You'll World Cup champion, you've got to.
Starting point is 00:02:25 So anyone that is behind the times, and they're listening to our nobles emergency podcast. England have just won the T20 World Cup in the most extraordinary fashion. They are the first team in history to hold both the 50 over and the T20 World Cup. Like they are double champions. Wow, I didn't even know that.
Starting point is 00:02:44 They literally are top of the world. Do you know what for me, from 2015 to 2022, what a turn around? There's so much to unpack out. We've got like 10, 15 minutes to do it because this is an actual emergency podcast, and I'm meant to be at brunch right now, so we're going to have to fly through this.
Starting point is 00:03:01 Where do we start? Gosh, right. Well, I'm just going to say, while we're talking about the kids, I did see the cutest moment where Joss put his medal on his little girl, and she took it off immediately. She was like, no, don't want it.
Starting point is 00:03:15 She's like, no, daddy, it's yours. Yeah. She knows she didn't do enough to hold that medal around her neck. Oh, but what a game. What a day. First and foremost, congratulations. to you. Why? You've won the bet. I've won the bet. England won. You predicted that England
Starting point is 00:03:34 would win this game. You've won the bet. Yes, I did. I've won the bet. Oh my God, you are going to have to do the best forfeit ever. But this isn't about us. We'll get into that in a few days. But for the podcast listeners that listen to the podcast regularly, you know what we're talking about. There will be something that we'll do a proper episode and we'll go into a bit more detail into that. I have been advised for social media purposes and so that the BBC can use it you won't be going around in a costume thank you Henry thank you anyway yeah England won the World Cup England won the World Cup first and foremost I was on weather watch today because we spoke about the weather and how bad it was going to be and there was talk about it
Starting point is 00:04:14 going to be a joint trophy a shared trophy because the weather in Melbourne was forecast terrain Saturday Sunday and Monday so Monday was the reserve day I got this morning, blue sky, Melbourne. I was like, what is going on? You text me saying, do I get up? I was like, I'll keep you posted. I woke up to some messages being like, it's absolutely fine.
Starting point is 00:04:36 And at this point, I'm going to start a petition. In fact, I'm not, because we're in a bit of an economic crisis, so people do need jobs. But what are weather people doing? How are you getting it so wrong all the time? Whether people are not needed anymore, are they? Just look out the window. Get out, put them in the bin. Yeah, look out your window.
Starting point is 00:04:53 But you got up and watched. I did. Sorry if you are a weather person. We do appreciate some sort of weather being on the TV that makes no sense and actually doesn't happen. But yeah, I did get up and watched. I was about 20 minutes late, but you text me saying they're playing. I was like, oh, I really would have loved another hour in bed. Yeah, unlucky. Get up.
Starting point is 00:05:13 England have won the World Cup. I'm just going to jump on my sticky notes because I've been making some, a few notes through the game. and I want to just shout out Owen Morgan at this point because that man is England's number one fan every time someone comes over to do an interview with Sky he's the first one to be like elated and this could have been him it could so easily have been his him lifting that trophy
Starting point is 00:05:39 well yeah it could have been it really could have been because he's been one of the greatest white ball captains England have ever had and now he's on commentary and he's doing a brilliant job but he is England England's biggest fan and he's like high-fiving them all he's hugging them all and it's really sweet to see isn't it it's really nice to watch and it probably goes to show that he made the right decision because if he's if he's bitter or like remotely thinking I wish that was me he obviously didn't retire it at the right time but I've just loved watching him like enjoy their
Starting point is 00:06:10 success I think it's just been so nice to see the other person I really want to talk about is my man Sam Cohen player of the tournament player of the match three for in a World Cup final for absolute spit and I mean he started the tournament with a five for like start better and better like book end that really well but he wasn't leading wicket taker was he
Starting point is 00:06:32 I'm not bothered about that you've won the bet anyway but Alex his first his first World Cup he was amazing like the way he came into the side and for me it was the fact that England lost Reese Topley before the tournament started and Reese Topley was to
Starting point is 00:06:48 bowl in the power play and bowl at the death and then at the very, very last minute he gets the call, Sam Coring goes, right, you're going to do the hard yards here. Five for ten in the opening game and three for 12 in the World Cup final player of the tournament. How's about that?
Starting point is 00:07:03 What a man. Also, I just want to just dip in here and say, that's Henry behind you making all that noise. So when Henry's annoyed that he's got to edit himself out of this podcast, it's not our fault. Henry will have to edit himself out of this podcast. But we're live in the commentary box. Henry, have you got anything to say making all that racket?
Starting point is 00:07:19 What was I doing? Making racket. I was making racket. I was being charming and delightful, as always. Hi, Crossy. It's lovely to see you, Henry. Are you going to keep this in the podcast, or is it going to get clipped out? Who knows?
Starting point is 00:07:31 Who knows? You can't hear you. Who knows? The other thing I just want to talk about as well, it was the worst run-on from a team winning a World Cup that I have ever witnessed in any sport in the history of sport. Well, the celebration between Livingston and Stokes was fantastic because Livingston jumped on him and said, You beauty!
Starting point is 00:07:58 Mounted him, love it. But the England dressing room and the dugout, they didn't really know where to go. So the ball obviously didn't go for four, and they hadn't completed the run because they were too busy celebrating. So Mowin's like, do we go on, do we not? And Sam's already running, and then Alex Hales is a bit like, I don't know what to do, I'm kind of following Mowing.
Starting point is 00:08:15 It was terrible, like the worst bit of TV I've seen all morning. But Josh Butler just mounted Matthew Mott, who we really do need to speak about. Yeah, we do. He has three World Cups, Crossy. He won the T20 World Cup final here in 2020 with Australia women. He's then won the women's T20 World Cup final in February. 50 over World Cup.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Sorry, 50 over World Cup. And now he's taken over this England White Ball South. and they've won the T20 World Cup. Why is this man so special? He's won three World Cups and he's done two of them in the last eight months. What a CV that is.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Is there anything this man can't do? Do you know what? He just did a really interesting interview on Sky and he was talking about how he knew that it was like six months to basically not turn the team around but he knew that it was going to be a tall order to even try and win this trophy.
Starting point is 00:09:11 But he just spoke about how well Joss actually he spoke about Joss being injured and actually meant that he was able to watch the team without the pressure of having to play and it was really interesting to hear how that he thought that that helped Joss be able to mold the team into the team that he wanted it to be. Okay, so he like took a step back.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Well basically he had to because he was injured, didn't he? He did his calf and then Moeen captain for the T20 warm-up stuff. Yeah. So like did Matthew Mott say like what he does, like how he coaches? Because for me like he's just a real good People Manager. Yeah, he didn't go into that much detail about it. I mean, it is incredible for him to win the 2022 World Cup with Australia Women at the start of the year and then the 2022 Men's World Cup with England men.
Starting point is 00:10:01 It is incredible. He must, what he brings to the team must just be incredible. And that's why I was so annoyed he wasn't Welsh Fire coach. Yeah, you could have won some at all. Instead of losing every game. He might have won a game. also I can tell you're in the commentary box because you're BBC Al today
Starting point is 00:10:21 you're not podcast Al am I not sorry sorry I'll try and be podcast Al come on come back to us it's an emergency podcast okay I'm back I don't know where to go from here have you had a good time because like the atmosphere on TV looked amazing
Starting point is 00:10:35 honestly like it's been incredible we got here this morning me and Dan North Cross walked the longest way around to the ground like it took us like 45 minutes I swear it took Henry 10 minutes to get here I don't know what we were doing where we were going you're taking it all in yeah we were taking it all in and as I said on air rather than we got to follow the crowd I said swallow the crowd which is always good oh good so I got here and it's full of Pakistan fans and there was like little chunks of England fans around and the Barmy army and whatnot and my mum said do you reckon you can get me a ticket I fancy it and I was like mum you don't even like cricket she hates cricket she hates cricket Mum came, she sat in the crowd and she texted me saying, I am so, so glad I was here.
Starting point is 00:11:20 It was amazing. And I reckon she had about 10 beers. Love that. Go on, Julia. I mean, there was times where there were so many, like, caught behind half appeals from Rizwan. Hello. We've got a little guest.
Starting point is 00:11:34 I love to say hello. Hello, Crossie. How are you? Good, thanks, Haggis. How are you? Are you behaving yourself? Of course I am. The hair's got very long.
Starting point is 00:11:41 What's going on there? It has. Streaming out behind me, running off your long run. it has this is why I have to tie it up every ball have you got anything to say on England's winning the World Cup have I got anything to say I thought it was jolly good no I'm being serious
Starting point is 00:11:55 when we left here against Ireland I thought because they just seemed to be off it and not really focused and then Australia was washed out as they hadn't played and there's quite a long gap and you think this might not go very well but they regrouped they're a very fine sight aren't they
Starting point is 00:12:11 and they're worthy winners Worthy winners. More importantly, have you enjoyed doing the T20 comms? Of course. Of course I have. I always enjoy it. I was a joy. This is it at 62.
Starting point is 00:12:25 However, what does do? I reckon I'm the only Englishman to have been here 30 years ago. When England lost to Pakistan here in the World Cup. So we put that right. So I guess was here in 1992 when England lost to Pakistan. He was here in 2020. I wasn't born. You actually weren't.
Starting point is 00:12:41 I was. I was a year old. there we go we actually got a bit of inside scoop just quietly we probably owe him 70 pound for that appearance yeah how much do you charge for a four minute interview like that I'll get him a large glass of chardonnay yeah nice what I was just saying before I was rudely interrupted us and gave us some brilliant insight
Starting point is 00:13:04 into what it was like 30 years ago Rizwan was appealing for everything caught behind and Baba just didn't know what to review because it was so loud it was and do you know what the umpire who's the the bigger one maria aramis maria azmus maria azmus easy for me to say he made some great decisions because the bowlers running in and they're going up and like he's like no it's not out no ben stokes hasn't hit it and they're like review it review it he actually hadn't hit it how the hell can he hear anything like yeah review it review it and then he was actually like yeah well bold i like that i like that
Starting point is 00:13:47 i didn't see that i missed that bit yeah um right that was carnage that's 30 minutes of us trying to summarize a game with people around you just talking really loudly well honestly like i've got now who's number 29 for england where's the team sheet milan malan's out there with two kids on the wicket playing cricket we've got kids throwing cricket balls he looks alright actually and I love it
Starting point is 00:14:20 because they're all stood around with their families like playing cricket throwing things in the air like it feels like a proper little family team family oriented team again sorry I can only go off what people I've heard say on the TV
Starting point is 00:14:34 this morning but Ben Stokes spoke about how you can't win World Cups you can't commit to being that sort of a team without the backroom staff, without just the general staff, the cricket coaches and the families, because they're the ones that also sacrifice their time,
Starting point is 00:14:50 their efforts, like their lives, basically, to support the guys that go and do that. So it really felt like an emotional one when they were talking about it. I mean, the fact, I just love, like Ben Stokes is just lying on the outfield here to our right, on his own. We've got a group of people over there trying.
Starting point is 00:15:09 They're just all enjoying it. They're not in the dressing room. ignoring their families all having a drink together they're making sure they properly celebrate this win are there still many fans there if they all had to go no that we've got some Pakistan fans down to our right probably about 100 everyone else has gone home
Starting point is 00:15:26 okay and everyone else just playing with the ribbons on the pitch yeah there's still I wish you could see it's madness what was your favorite moment of this World Cup that's hard I think there was
Starting point is 00:15:42 I love the upsets I loved I know there's a few but I think I just love the fact that it wasn't a it's going to be an Australia India final and it wasn't nailed on it was always gone down
Starting point is 00:15:53 to the final games or the final balls or whatever and I just think that's what you want a tournament to look like it keeps everyone interested all the time yeah
Starting point is 00:16:03 yeah I think mine was yeah but no it was good mine was the upsets as well but my genuine favourite moment was England playing India in that semi-final and India threw their toys out of the pram they didn't chase balls to the boundary they were almost shell-shocked and you thought India I think everyone just thought India were going to beat England I was so so close to doing a
Starting point is 00:16:26 really controversial tweet being like Indian men haven't won an ICC global tournament for so many years they're not ready for the IPL yet you know there's not enough depth in Indian cricket to be having an IPL, because that is the exact argument that the BCCI have been saying about the women's team for so long. I know, and they haven't won a world time for so long. I didn't tweet yet, but I've just said it on a podcast, so. That's all right. That'll get quoted on the BBC sport website.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Yeah, can't wait for the backlash of that. Before we go, one word from you on this England side being the best in the world. I just think we sometimes take for granted how good they are. Like this is going to be a team that we will look back on in so many years' time. They're history makers. There'll be Netflix documentaries about them and how good they are and how they've changed white ball cricket, starting from Owen Morgan.
Starting point is 00:17:19 And it's just a pleasure to be able to watch it. Wow, very good from you. I think they've, well, they did change white ball cricket forever. They deserve to be champions. And I am going to go and celebrate this win, like I celebrated our own in 2017. Yeah. won't be sick in a bin.
Starting point is 00:17:39 I won't. I'm going to be sensible. It's late here now. It's midnight. Let's actually finish by saying congratulations Joss. Congratulations Matthew Mort on winning the T20 World Cup. It's been, you've given us something to watch back in England when it's been a little bit cold and a little bit miserable and it's been a pleasure. Thank you. You've been entertaining. You've also been crap at times, but you are the world champions in 50 over cricket and T20 cricket. Congratulations. And this is the least hindsight podcast we have ever done because we wanted to beat the tail enders to the emergency podcast.
Starting point is 00:18:11 So up yours, tail enders. Up yours. We've beaten the tailenders to the emergency podcast, losers. Bye, everyone. Bye. And cross strikes in the first over. It's what England we're looking for. Hartley balls.
