It's what England we're looking for.
Hartley falls.
Down the track comes scoring this time she connects.
It's either six or out.
It's six.
Hello and welcome back to No Balls of Cricket podcast with me, Kate Cross, and you, Alex Hartley.
Hello.
Hello, are you okay?
This is the first time I've actually seen you this week.
Yes, we've been very busy, haven't we?
We've been like ships in the night this week.
I know, we literally are.
And then obviously post-game day, oh, I was in a bad way.
So I spent the whole day in my room, didn't come out.
So I've missed you.
Yeah, it has been, well, what day was that Thursday?
We're now on Monday.
Got another game tomorrow.
Yeah.
Coming thick and fast, aren't they?
They are.
I can't believe we're nearly at the end of the tournament when I don't even feel like it's got started.
It has been a bit like that, hasn't it?
It felt like we've not quite got going.
yet but but but we had a crisis meeting and it worked it were we won our first game hashtag
fim high five five i've got bruised hand sorry sorry got you on the hot spot i was catching cricket
balls today at training and do you know when you just kept getting them on keep getting on the wrists and not
the hand yeah one of those days um speaking of first in the hundred uh we already spoke about some
of the first things that i've been in the hundred and you took your first wicket 17 games in
congratulations finally honestly crossy if anyone's watching or watch the highlights or watch the game
you would think i'd got the world's best battles out the carry-on was ridiculous but it meant so much
i was going to say it felt like your celebrations were everything coming out of the frustration
of the first couple of games not taking wickets probably not contributing how you would like to
contribute to the team do you know what it was he said to me at the start we went through roles and
you're like, you're my wicket taker, I'll, I'm going to turn to you
and we need wickets and we're five games in.
I was like, I'm not going to wicket.
Yeah, I had to adjust my little
note pad.
Yeah.
Then I was like, okay.
Scrivel that out.
Hannah Jones, welcome to the team.
You're my wicket taker.
Get us a wicket with a bloody full toss.
It happens, 33% it happens.
Right, I'm going straight to my sticky note because we've got two
amazing guests this week.
So excited for you all to hear it.
But we were on with them for a long time.
We are.
So, yeah, I've got a few.
things that I just want to run through on the old sticky note. In the game, I took, we had a no balls
wicket, didn't we? We did. We did. So, Maya Boucher, you bowl the ball, my Bouchier, sky's it up.
As soon as the ball went up, I was like, yours all. And then I was like, oh, wow, that's right
above me. I was like, okay, I'll go for this catch. I take the catch. And then everyone has
taken the mick out of the fact that I did a little roll afterwards. Yeah, he did. Someone tweeted
saying incredible crossy just said speckies only live on sky sports because i was
mowling it to emm so yeah i just wanted to clarify why i did that role so it was for the
speckies only make it look like a specky but also i don't know if you saw in the cardiff game
carlos brathwaite took a catch above his head at midoff put so much mayonnaise on it it was mid on
sorry not mid off put so much mayonnaise on it did this role and like made it look amazing so i just
thought i'll emulate him he's my idol i'll emulate him i want to be like Carlos and i showed in the
video that night and I was like do you recognize anything here he's like oh yeah good catch he was
like why did you why did you do the role or was that carlos that was my impression of you and he just
turned to me and he went you pique so everyone that is why the role came out I love that I love that
go on rattle through them okay um we wanted to also say we kind of went into the hundred thinking
that we'd have access to a head like a shedload of players didn't we a lot of opposition players
we're hoping we get the likes of Owen Morgan, Chris Lynn,
who else is in the tournament, I can't think of names.
Anyone, anyone else that we've not got.
And we've just not had the opportunity to because of COVID.
So just wanted to get it out there, basically,
that the reason you're hearing from all the Manchester Originals players
is because we're in a COVID bubble with them.
And they're the only people we have access to.
So yeah, next year, hopefully we'll get access to a little bit more.
Stay with us.
Next year, we'll be back stronger.
Yep.
First week at the tournament, we've already rattled on about that.
So you fell over.
Soot fell over
Suf fell over
Oh she's really hurt her so
Oh right okay
We can't laugh then why aren't you telling that at the beginning
Apparently one of the girls
Downstairs went for a coffee saying she's hurt her ankle
We actually watched it back in slow mode
And she was on the deck
It looked bad we did laugh
But then we realised she rolled her ankle
And I was like I've got biscuit ankle
So I can't take the Mick out of her
So we've invited her into the Rich Tea
Biscuit ankle club
Yep
So she's in with me.
Okay, yep, good.
I don't want to be part of that club.
We've also created a new club.
We have...
Well, it's the Nobles Club.
The Honorary Nobles Club.
The Honorary Nobles Club.
And we have a gentleman that is currently joined our Honorary Nobles Club.
I'm not sure.
We have tweeted him to let him know, but we're not too sure whether he will have seen it.
But Alex Hales in Sunday's game of The 100, unfortunately for him...
Not once.
Not, well, it was twice, but the tagline of the 100.
is that every ball counts.
And unfortunately for Alex Hales, two in two,
he got hitting the balls.
It was so nearly three in three
and he was like, get off me.
Yeah, it was a get off me shot, wasn't it?
It was just any bat on the ball would have been helpful.
It always blows my mind with stuff like that.
So a bloke gets hit in the gonads.
Gouly, wooly, wooleys, as Ebony said.
What was that?
I was like, what?
I rewanted to tell you, it was like,
what the hell did she just say?
The first thing that came out of my brain
when that happened was not the word goooly-wooly-wool-oos.
Goolie, he's been hitting the go-y-wool-y-woolies.
So, a bloke gets hit in the go-y-woolies, in the gonads.
And every other bloke on the field laughs, knowing how much it hurts.
Yeah, and every girl laughs as well, don't everyone goes, ooh, and then everyone just laughs.
But honestly, I don't think I've ever laughed as much as when it hit him the second time.
No, me neither.
Because I was like, oh, you've got to go back of a length ball again and go again,
and he inside edged it onto his...
So yeah, very funny, very good.
Very, very good.
I had something else to talk about and forgotten.
I've got two things to talk about.
Go on.
One, I know we haven't addressed any emails recently,
but that's purely because we're just going guest, guest, guest, guest, guest,
and we'll do your emails when we can.
It's no ballspodcast at bbc.c.co.com.
No ballspodcast at bbc.com.com.
It's so good.
They said it twice.
We had some amazing feedback on Stephen Finn as well, didn't we?
I thought you came away from the episode, feeling a bit flat about it.
Yeah, I was.
But we actually laughed so much.
And the feedback that we got on him is incredible.
He's a very funny man.
People say it's up there with our best episode.
One of the best, yeah.
I feel like we're producing a lot of good episodes at the minute
because we've got incredible guests.
Yeah, that's true.
It's not us.
It's nothing to do with us.
But please keep tweeting us and emailing us and Instagraming us
because we read everything and we love it.
Obviously just say the nice stuff, though.
Don't say anything mean.
Somebody's created an Instagram account.
And it might well be the best thing that we've ever seen.
Crossy, we are that famous.
We've got a meme account.
Do you know what, these people, whoever it is,
we don't know who's doing it.
We don't want to know because they're funnier than us.
Yeah, well, I was just going to say they're funnier than us
and they should probably start their own podcast because they're very, very good.
But we genuinely laugh out loud every time they post something, don't we?
We send them each and we're like,
what I've even thought of this?
This is absolutely genius.
I don't know what it's called on Instagram.
It's called like Nobles Fan Zone, something like that.
But we keep reposting it, so yeah.
You'll see it.
You will see it.
I have an exciting announcement.
All right, okay.
You don't know what's coming.
No, I don't.
Yeah.
Is it that you're going to wash your hair?
Why do you always bring this up?
She says, in a cap, because she's not washed her hair.
And no, I'm not going to wash my hair because I'm going out of the dinner.
Okay.
The exciting announcement.
that I've kept you in the dark about.
You do know, but we just forgot to talk about it
on week one of the 100,
is we have two sign shirts from the men and women
to give away from this podcast.
Oh, lovely.
I didn't know about that.
Did you know?
I did know about that.
So we don't know how we're going to do it.
We've not actually physically got the shirts yet either
because they've been sent to the England camp
to get Josh Butler's signature.
So yeah, we're going to be giving those away.
Okay, so we'll come up with something, won't we?
It'll probably be daft and absolutely ridiculous and ludicrous.
But there'll be a way for you guys to get hold of two signed shirts.
Well, one.
You said there's two signed shirts.
Yeah, but then you don't want to give someone too.
No, two people can get two signed shirts.
Wow, we should have practiced this before we started speaking about it.
That's everything on my sticky note.
So, should we go straight into our guest?
We getz.
Plural.
Bring them in.
Crossie, it gives me, as always, so much pleasure to introduce our guests this week.
We've got two of them.
We've got LaSalle Lee and Mignon Dupree.
Welcome by On's podcast.
That's like English.
Welcome to our podcast.
Yeah, for anyone that doesn't know Afrikaans, that was welcome to our podcast.
Translated and spoke so eloquently by me, I thought.
I thought you said it exactly the same.
same way as if you would in English
it's actually welcome
oh welcome by
our podcast podcast
there's actually there's actually
African's word for podcast but
but we don't know
pot choy
sweets
wow what a star
you learned something new every day
I might have to Google it so can you say welcome
to our podcast in Afrikaans please
just with the word you just said
welcome by
our own pot choy that was what I
Yeah.
Literally, word, sorry.
You said, I just did a welcome podcast.
Welcome to our podcast.
How are you both?
Really well.
Fantastic.
If you ask a question like that, should we both answer at the same time?
Different times.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
Lizelle, you look like you got something to say.
Like, you just missed up the whole thing.
No, that's fine.
Ask a question when we do a question.
No, Lizelle, this podcast is authentic.
It's fine.
That's why we're doing this.
No more questions from your side.
She will leave the questions to them, okay.
Are you enjoying your time in Manchester?
Oh, yes, it's lovely.
It rains a lot, though.
But this is basically La Zalle's ultimate holiday destination.
If she can stay in a hotel room 24-7 and limited access,
and basically staying at the place where she trains, eat, sleep, what better can I be?
I must say, yeah, for me, it's a bit challenging.
I'm a little bit Tommy tourist, so I'd like to go and do stuff.
So it's been a bit of a challenge
I've literally spent yesterday
about an hour browsing in Tesco.
That was the hard of my day.
Like I walk through every hour.
Can I tell you what's the worst thing?
And me and Minion speak about it so much.
Like, I can't shop with her.
So if we go to a shop,
she will see something online.
It's like, let's him you have to go to this place.
So we go to the place.
And then it's like, oh, I like this.
But I'll do some more online browsing.
And then we'll come back.
And then she does a lot of online browsing.
And then we come back.
like, oh, no, I'm going to do it a few more.
And then she goes again, and she comes back, and then the special's over.
Eventually, when I go back, it's sold up.
So, did you online browse Tesco and then go to Tesco?
It would surprise me.
No, just because it's close enough walking distance, but I've been there a few times.
I walked the first round, and I saw a few things like, but I haven't actually bought it.
Go back.
Yesterday, the plan was we go together.
I'm just going to leave me then.
So that's exactly what you're done.
And I probably only got back an hour later.
Wow.
An hour.
Yeah, I walk through every hour.
I think I went from electronic, stationery, clothing, accessories.
You've been in Manchester for three weeks, and we're talking about Tesco.
That's what a COVID bubble does to you.
Well, to be fair, I went to the, we went to the Golden Range yesterday.
Yes.
That was very good.
So for anyone who didn't see my Instagram story yesterday, Lizelle, oh my gosh, the first ball, she steps up to the tea, and she just goes,
whack, straight down.
The middle of the, I don't know, is it a fair?
airway like 250 yards
yeah please get your lingerie lazal is
honestly like post cricket she said
that's going to be her she's going to turn pro golfer
I think I'm very good but I don't think I really am
no she got a glove out she will put the glove on
as soon as we got her I have a twir glove
that always just stays in my bag
somewhere along the long you always play golf
and then I can't go and buy a new glove every single time
so I just keep a glove in my bag
honestly that ball is still travelling
that you hit it went miles and then
I stepped up and followed her, and the ball fell off the ledge and hit some guy below us.
Well, to be fair, you did hit it on the green.
Yeah, which was three yards away from us with a driver.
But it ended up on the green.
She's the only, the only person that I think hit the ball on the green of the driver.
Even though they didn't get the distance you wanted, but you hit the ball of the green.
The green was 12 yards away from where we were hitting the ball from.
And he was down.
Oh, gosh, right.
We digress.
Let's get into the nitty and gritty.
So, Mignon, you go first.
How did you get into cricket?
Well, I've had to probably tell the story like a million times, but a million and one.
A billion and one.
I actually started playing cricket as a little four-year-old girl.
By accident, my brother was playing mini cricket.
That's pretty cricket.
Yeah, basically.
I think it's similar to what you guys do around here.
My dad was a coach of his team, and I was a little supportive sister.
I always had a t-shirt and the right shorts
and I went to watch my brother play
and then one day one of the boys
didn't make it to the game in time
and you played and my dad said
listen we need you
and I was the best batterer of the day
I think that's where my love started for the game
yeah short and sweet
I think like most of like our stories
starts well the same
like you're playing with your brother
you're playing in the backyard and that's just how it starts
like I think a lot of the times
how old were you?
Um, I was very, very small.
I think the stamps were like, you know, the people can't see the stamps.
Nipple high is where she's pointed.
That's what she was showing, but obviously the viewers, they were, um, yeah, I didn't want
to say that.
So that's where the stamps were.
So I think, I don't know, maybe six or something.
16.
24.
Which is not that short.
I started playing when I was 24.
and made the team a 25.
Did you both play boys cricket growing up then?
Or did you have girls' teams in South Africa?
No.
I think girls' teams only started recently in schools and things.
So I played until I was 13 years old,
and then there wasn't an 19 girls team.
But schools-wise there wasn't.
It's only like provincial, you will go into a women's,
or not another girls, there was actually women's team.
Yeah, so for me, going past grade or turning 13,
When you go to high school, my parents felt like it might be a bit dangerous,
like the boys start bowling too quickly and stuff.
So I've played girls cricket.
That was the same.
But there was only like, I think, three or four schools that had teams.
So we basically just played against the same team all the time.
But at least...
I ended up playing for a different school.
So I went to the one school that didn't have a ladies team.
And the same happened.
They said it was too dangerous.
And we'd just start playing with the boys in high school.
So I actually ended up playing for one of the neighbor towns.
played for their team
like their school
so I went to one school
and played for the high school
because actually you had to play cricket
in school
to basically be
eligible for selection for like a
provincial team so I had to do it
wow that's crazy it's actually
mad that even though we've got like different
countries different cultures
all our cricket stories are really similar
like how we had to play in boys teams
how we had to do things differently
to get to where we've all got to today
That's true. That's so true.
And I think it's just good.
If you do the same thing now in 10 years' time,
they will actually say they grew up playing in their own, like,
in a girl's team.
Yeah, that's amazing.
I think there's going to be a few girls that said,
we watched the 100.
Yeah.
And that's where we started playing again.
Actually, everyone sat in this room by you, Alex,
has hit a six in this hundred.
Whoa!
I haven't batted.
I've not had the opportunity.
Yeah.
Have you not bad at once?
No, not once.
I've had my pads on probably every again.
Except for the last year.
Except for the one we won.
Because the match hero, Lizzie.
Thank you.
Given the opportunity, I'll plink it into the legs after two.
I will not hit a six.
I will back you to hit her like one bounce four, maybe like...
Wait, wait, I've seen some footage of you...
So close to the six.
I've seen some footage of her hitting the match winning rounds for the Thunder team or something.
She did...
Yeah, the next for four.
I haven't seen footage.
I thought it was placed really well.
It was.
It was placed past the keeper.
I haven't seen footage, but I've seen...
in real life in the next and you actually bomb it.
Thank you.
So I will back you to head it.
I'm changing my mind.
I'll back you to hit a six.
Not a one-border.
On a short boundary.
On a short boundary.
What are your own boundary?
Right, we're going to ask one more boring cricket question.
Is cricket fully professional in South Africa for you girls now?
I would say it's now a viable career option for selected Fuson.
Unfortunately, we only have 15 contracted players.
so for those goals I reckon we're in a position where you can start making a living from it
but unfortunately not at lower level of domestic cricket not yet
there is big talks of something happening quite soon for a few goals
where they would start contracting a few more players so that would be exciting for us back home
but from where we were when we started I started playing for South Africa in 2007
to where we are now I would say we've made some major strides and there's a big improvement
that yeah we have to be credit where credits do and um
Can still improve?
How old were you?
Oh, I can't do that math.
Quick maths?
14 years ago, 27 minus 14.
13.
You were making your Lancashire debut.
I was, I was making my Lancashire debut when you were making your South Africa debut.
Yeah.
How old are you now?
27.
How old were you?
I was 15.
When you debuted?
No, I was just 15.
Oh, wait.
Oh, yeah.
I wanted to say.
That's good
I was 15
When did you debut
I was just doing the math
In my brain as well
I was like
Yep
That's what I was yep
Right
We cannot have you on the podcast
Without talking about
You guys had to go
Via Croatia
To get to England
To play in this
That's torture
Like why do we have to
Can you even imagine
What we had to go through
Two weeks in Croatia
I mean it was sunny
It was the ocean
Beautiful blue waters
You did 10 days
that you're two weeks
Two weeks
Seven days
Seven days in isolation
And then a seven day holiday
Basically
Basically
And then three weeks in rain
In Manchester
I mean
What could we have asked
For anything better
Like I said
Lazal
Loves this part
More than the Croatia
But for me
Creation was
No I enjoyed it
I just never
Like I went through my series
Again
I probably watched
The Big Bang Theory
And Modern Family
Every single tour
And I think
You guys
through all seasons.
On a tour?
Yeah.
Or like both of them, yeah.
No wonder we don't see you.
You see.
But see, the thing at creation was this first seven days she got all the series.
She watched quite a few.
So then she was actually really good.
Like we invited it to Moe stuff and she actually joined us.
We went to walk the wall.
It's a thing.
You go to the Alltown and you have to walk the wall.
And they were like, let's get off here.
And I was like, guys, we're going to finish this wall.
We are going to finish this wall.
We just speak the day that there was.
It's the hottest.
Yeah, there was a, what do you call it?
A heat wave.
In Croatia, what do you call it?
They've forgotten.
They've been in Manchester for three weeks and they've forgotten what a heat wave is.
It's not rain, it's not rain.
It's not raining.
Yeah, but it was actually, in all honesty.
I'm going to give credit to ECB yet.
That was amazing.
And, you know, COVID has bring so much, like, drama and, like, sad vibes everywhere.
But if it wasn't for that, we wouldn't be able to, like,
go to creation that was honestly amazing and Ben playing the 100
I never thought we had to come back and do our jobs
yeah I never thought cricket would take me to Croatia so that was pretty
so do you have to go back via anywhere or Australia
Maldives maybe can you ask you well technically we are going back via West Indies
but that's for a national tour oh okay so we are actually going back via the Caribbean
nice maybe we need to go back via there
Yeah, on that 10-minute drive back to Pittsburgh.
My favourite part of your Croatia Isolation Slash Holiday was the sticker maker.
You actually sent a message in our group saying that you had made some very illegal Manchester Original merchandise.
I would just say we were so excited that we couldn't wait to get our hands on our Manchester Regional shirt.
So we just decided we're going to make ourselves one.
So they made us some socks, which I'm very aware that no one can see right now.
I've got one in my hand, and it is, it's a white sock.
It looks a very large.
It is a big sock.
It is amazing. I put them in bulk.
It looks like it belongs to Carlos Brathway.
I thought you had big feet.
Hey, biggest compi chooses.
We didn't know the size of your feet.
But it's cool.
It's got the Manchester Originals logo on it.
It says Manchester Originals on it.
And I'm going to wear them.
I need shower, but I am going to wear these.
I'm assuming they're a gift for me because you left them.
No, we want them back.
We just actually kind of show you what we can do.
And then we're taking them back.
Yeah, so that's actually, so this machine is, it's spelled cricket, but it says cricket.
You say it cricket, so it's about cricket loving cricket.
You really emphasized that cut.
Do you sell in these machines?
No, it sounds fantastic.
Can you just, no, I'm joking.
But it's really pretty cool.
So we played around.
It's actually just sent to us as a little gift for isolation periods to keep us busy and crafty.
And it's been really good.
I think actually since Lizal's got her.
She's been so busy making things in her room
She's ordered stuff on Amazon
She's that you see all the packages
That arrived today at the training
It wasn't a lot
So the first thing was just something for my mom
She's going to build her own bear
And then teddy bear
And then this yeah
It was just some vinyl and stuff to like
Print on clothes and make stickers
Yeah look at that lingo vinyl
Did you ever think you'll hear about this fancy words for?
She's already finished all her series
so she's got time to fill.
She didn't know what to do that.
I just started again and just leave it on the background.
But that was done just so you know with iron on.
That's not vinyl.
We had to do with the mini iron.
Oh.
We're actually busy.
Can't wait for it to come off in the wash.
It actually, it sticks for 52 washes.
What?
Did you Google it?
I saw it on one of the last week.
That's one a week.
That's not to last week.
One year.
Please give us some feedback.
Yes, we will.
Thanks.
Right.
You girls have been traveling around the world playing cricket.
Like you said.
you didn't think you go to Croatia because of cricket
but you've played in a lot of competitions around the world
Big Bash and KSL
you've been both involved in the KSL
How does the 100 compare
to all the other tournaments that you've been involved in?
Oh, that's a tough year you go first
Well from my excitement point of view
It's been amazing I think the build-up to the
There's been something really special
And the fact that they like
We've got basically one big happy family
They've really done well at combining the men's and the women's
teams, competitions. And I think we've really done well at Manchester
Reginals, bringing them all together, how they
support us. It's really, I mean, having the guys are training
sessions helping us out. That's pretty special. You don't get to see
that quite often. So for me, and I think the biggest thing was
the amount of people that actually came to watch us play, because we don't
even get that at some of our international games. So to get big crowds in
and seeing little girls and families in the stands. I mean, usually
cricket is a bit of a boy's day out and the girls stay at home, but it's
It was so nice to see that people are actually coming to watch and stay for both games.
Because it was the other thing we've often seen.
We've played doubleheaders with, I mean, seems before.
But the gap between the games was too big.
So people only come for the second game.
So we really had any supporters.
So it was really nice.
I think the big thing is just the entertainment.
I think they have done an amazing job of like getting DJs and Becky Heel.
Yeah, Becky Heel singing and we were dancing in the first game.
Please just give LaZal's dance miss.
Please just share them again.
I will pull those off.
So, yeah, I think that was, I think, yeah, the 100 is actually something different.
It's amazing and it's still cricket.
At the end of the day, cricket stays cricket.
Team of the most run wins.
I'm glad you said that, okay.
I think the good thing about it was actually just simplified it.
That's all it is.
So when you came over, what were you expecting from the 100,
or did you just think, well, I'm going to have to just learn again?
Well, I think it was just Fim.
Fim, which we explained FIM to everybody.
You can do that.
So we had a crisis meeting last Monday,
which we actually spoke about on the podcast,
and basically what came out of this crisis meeting was...
It's friends in Manchester,
if anybody wanted to know what it stands for.
It actually means...
It means f***it mode.
Wow!
We go into f***it mode now when we play cricket.
Yes.
hashtag femp that's basically because obviously we have never done it we've we've sort of know the rules
because you don't know it she had her handed out some rules at the warm-up game but you still don't know
it like unless you don't do it yourself you don't know it so i think we it's one of those you just you go and
you see what happens and but i think for me the warm-up game that we played kind of just like gave in a slight
idea of what it's what it's going to be like because it was all with you that day because that was our first warm
so we were kind of all in it together which is quite nice so i think if it wasn't for that
like playing the opening game we would have scared because all the other teams the league
that had to see what we were doing and then find find out how they're going to go about it
actually nobody knew what to expect nobody knew what was a good score for the first game
i think it actually took the teams like nobody knew kate cross is going to hit the first six
other tournament i would have had money on it being you well to be fair the south africans did
represent like first week it first boundary first wide
first wide um so up the saffas yeah saffers yeah saffers are holding us up here
waselle yeah you were at one point the number one batter in the world
for two days congratulations thank you that was the next bit um was
hang on is that all it was two days well are you two or three days oh yeah is it changed
like it feels like it just changed every hour did you check it every hour
I must have stood on top.
I must start on top.
Okay, let me rephrase it.
You've been number one batter in the world for two days longer than anybody in this room.
So, I mean, it's an amazing achievement.
But was that something that you had ambitions to be?
Or is that just a product of how your cricket's gone?
Well, I would be lying if I say I don't want to be the best.
Obviously, I think as any player, you want to do the best that you possibly can.
So, yes, I want it to be the best.
And I think it's, it is, it was.
great being the number one but to be fair i don't really read a lot into that because it changes a lot
and if you don't play a game you're it so it doesn't really matter but for me being the best means
contributing to my team being consistent and there's still so much i need to do so it just doesn't
stop and it's always i'm always just going to try and be the best i can possibly be you must have
felt a sense of pride though without a doubt yeah who's the first person you told well actually
I think Tanya sent me the thing of saying it.
So, yeah, Tanya was the first person to tell me.
Tanya's your wife or anyone like that doesn't know.
Yeah, and I just like send it through to my parents
because like I think I have three number one fans
and that's my mom, my dad and Tanya.
And the dogs, the three dogs.
Oh, so they're six now.
Yeah.
Yeah, love me little doggies.
A minion, we can't have you on the pod
without asking you what's it like to captain your country.
Is that a thing you always wanted to do?
No, actually growing up, I think obviously playing for your country is the first thing you think of.
I think I probably never thought part of playing for my country, but it was definitely the biggest honor of my career as I saw.
It was really special.
Maybe also a lot of my cricket stories happened by accident.
How I got into the team, somebody accidentally got injured and got pulled up.
They say it was accidentally.
Basically something similar happened with the captain's year.
Captain got injured and somebody had to step up
and had a meeting with the coach
and he made it quite clear that it's not just
an interim thing, it's going to be permanent.
So obviously at the age of 22, it was quite scary.
At that time, I also felt like
I'm a good leader of people,
but I'd sometimes still have some doubts
about my cricket,
how you think the technical ability
about the game. So I think for the first few games,
I probably still had a little paper with some notes
to remember who's going to bowl witchovers and stuff.
But I think that's one of those things you learn on the job.
It's been fantastic few years.
Yeah.
But I think the country is in really good hands with the net moment.
So I think the girls have played really well in the last few years.
And I'm just excited that I can still contribute and kind of be a leader without the title.
You know, there's some ways that you can still contribute and just be an experienced player that can add some value.
That's something I've noticed about, I'm not going to get too soppy, but how both of you've come into this team and you've led from the front.
Like you've been real senior players.
don't cry let's hell it's fine it's very emotional it's like therapy guys
you're getting it all out there but no that's something that we've all spoke about how you've
been brilliant around the group as well so thank you from so do you speak behind our backs
all the time good things only so that's good but thank you yeah I think that's something that's
awesome like if you know that you can contribute and especially coming into these events
obviously there's lots of eyes on the overseas and sometimes it's hard you don't always perform
the way you want to but then there's other ways that you can still add value to the team and
I think that's, to both of us, it's been pretty important.
We have such a young team as well, so I think to have two, like,
experience players come in as being really valuable for us.
And that's how series, that's the most serious we will be on in the past ever in the history of no walls.
What was it like Captain in LaSelle?
Oh, I'm very easygoing.
She's changed a bit over the years, I think.
I think in earlier years she had a little bit of a temper.
Really?
We wouldn't go into some of those changing stories, a little bit of gossip.
I have a very bad.
Well, to be fair, we witnessed
like Cardiff when Emelam ran you out
and you were on form.
You hit the first two balls of the game before
and then you got run out and you came off the field
you went straight to the dressing room,
put your kit down, put your sunglasses on,
put your hat on and you sat there with the sternest face
and wouldn't speak to everybody.
I was sat next to you actually
and the incident had actually,
you got hit on the head and I was like,
I hope she's okay, like physically for getting hit on the head.
So I left you, I reckon about 25 minutes
and then I said to Dan,
Collins was sat next to me.
I was like, I'm in Alaska.
I was like, hey, LaZelle, I know you're really angry right now,
but are you okay after the hit on the head?
And you just turned and looked to me and just nodded.
And I was like, yeah, she did say a few words
enough records to me when she came and sit down.
But I think just on that, like,
I think in the earlier years,
we weren't really as close,
but I reckon the year we started playing together
at the Women's Big Bash in Australia
at the Melbourne Stars,
that's kind of when we really got close.
And ever since then, we've kind of been cricket besties.
I do, I have a little bit.
of a temper um well people won't really see it in cricket that's probably the worst you'll see
of me but i do have one i think i get irritated very very easily but okay well before we go into
all this we actually have a little a little section that we've made up because you're our first
double guess that we've had that's a lot we're making history oh you're sorry no you're not making
history you're the second people that we forgot forgot about amy and lea um um
Okay, you have to answer these questions on behalf of each other.
So the questions about the other person.
I'm probably going to get everything wrong.
No, no, no, there's no wrong but right answers here.
So, right, the first one, what are each other's best traits?
Best traits?
Can you repeat that in Africa?
Yeah, I can.
What's the best thing about them?
I would say there's all being very caring about others,
always putting others first.
What is Jiao, bestie, and Escap?
I got it.
I got it.
Brilliant.
Yeah.
Good.
I think, yeah, I said caring.
I think Basar's very caring, especially when it comes to her wife and her parents.
She and her teammates and her dogs.
But, yeah, caring comes to mine.
Um, actually, mine is actually similar, but you're actually like the one person that always has a smile.
You can ask her anything.
Even if she doesn't want to do it, she'll do it with a smile in her face.
She'll always do it and support.
somebody else currently that's the
Shorzy. I've always seen him with a
smile. I'm like, even when he was holding the
board today as I was like, you guys are
the only people that were always smile like that.
I actually said you are
the equivalent of sunshine.
Like you are just so warm and so
why am I being so nice today?
This is not. You won't get.
Well it's hard to not be nice and nice people.
You see? I'm throwing like
a woman's month and I actually had to do this little interview
and I said I'm going to throw kinders
around like confetti in this
month so that's what you're doing you're just throwing kindness around well moving on
what's each other's worst trait that would be anger yeah temperament I think people
sometimes like step over you not you know but in a thing of physically she's small
but she's not that small vertically challenged her right
no anything is that's the thing she has such a kind heart that she will do anything for
anybody I think sometimes people take advantage exactly yeah yeah what do you think each other's
best moments in cricket of them when lazal scored 400 I'm going to say it out there in a provincial
cricket game single-hand and because obviously you haven't done your homework because you guys
did not ask this question yeah um yeah she scored 400 and just just give it 427 a teammate 600 and
they bowl the other team out for 13
when you're having a bad day
How many balls did you face?
200 and something
Oh my
Stop it
You scored 400
Okay but I can't say
Because I haven't seen that game
I would reckon
The 100 that you scored against England
When we played your
In
It was about 28
2019
Actually you spoke about yours
And I can't remember it
Or what's your
Your best thing do you've seen
about the first game of the T20 World Cup last year
hitting that six and beating England
Just say who did I hit a six off?
What did it, Catherine Brunt?
Yo!
Love you, Nanny.
Okay, and that flipped.
What is each other's worst moment, do you think?
I know my worst moment for you, but...
Um, probably the run out the other day.
I guess the first time I saw Lizzie, like, got knocked on the head and fell, like, over.
Yeah, it was being on concussed, I think.
No, I don't know. I think it's based, oh, I know.
I'm sorry, I'm going to get very personal now.
It was at the Big Bash, and we were, I don't know, we weren't, even in the barthum, doing
whatever and you started crying and just like it was this didn't go well for us and you literally
cried and i didn't know it was possible for you to cry yeah it's sorry it's very
it's a very personal like i cried like an opening of a store or something i'm a soft
texco opens down the road and she's back right six a m no don't lie yeah but that was
that's probably the lowest i've seen you and you literally because nothing was going your way
you didn't score rounds and you just like started crying and that was that was bad.
I'm really sad we've asked that question.
Next one, next one.
It's a fun one in there.
Yeah, let's move on.
Okay, what is the thing that the other person says too much?
See, we speak African's and English so it's like we've got a few more words to work with.
You two blow my mind because you'll just be talking in English and then you'll flip to Afrikaans and I'm like, I kind of knew what they were talking about and now they're being secretive.
Yeah, I'm like, what are they talking about?
You know what, that's actually the worst thing sounds like,
because sometimes we're just like,
because obviously we think in African,
so if we want to say something quickly, we say it,
but then sometimes I feel like people think we talk about them.
And you actually did today,
because you two were talking across me at dinner,
and I heard the word no balls in the middle of an African sentence,
and I was like, what?
I was just discussing, like, it was about the socks,
and like she did the one pair,
I did the other bit, just making sure both is that.
But on another, it is like that,
it's sometimes, it's not, like,
we don't want to be rude, but it's hard for me to speak to LaZal in English.
Yes, because I think I've gone, like, we've been in situations as a big passion.
Tony and Tanya's there and we're with other people.
So when I think of Tony, it's so weird to speak to him in English.
Yeah, that's true.
And just so you all know, you've said Tanya is her wife.
Tony is my husband.
Give him shout out to.
Who is going to have a Locky Ferguson shirt by the end of this tournament.
I'm holding on hold you to it.
You've now said it on Nobles podcast.
Yeah, so we're going to get that sorted.
Okay.
Minyan, what is Lizzielle?
favourite food and vice versa.
Brigh flace.
Oh, you're wrong.
Brigh flace.
Brigh flace.
Barbecue.
I thought that's a brie.
A brie.
That's it.
You've got it.
Brie flace is just a full word.
Favorite food, I would say pizza.
Joy, that was not the question.
Said favorite food in general.
If you go home, the first thing that you're going to do,
I asked you this the other day and you said the first thing you're going to do,
you're going to have a brie.
Yeah, but that's all my favourite food.
My favourite food is my mum's baguette to bowl and ice.
Well, sorry.
What is it to the worst?
Favorite, least favorite food.
Oh, coriander.
Yeah, it's for both of us.
No, it's not food, but it should be illegal.
So, just tell you, just please tell your listeners that LaZal actually tells people she's allergic to coriander.
I've got it here. Minian, what is Lazelle allergic to?
Is it in there?
Coriander, that's a quick answer.
But the truth is, and that's what.
actually because everybody else believed her
but like Lazile like she
can't lie with a straight face
so you I'm a liar you can see
she's got a little grin so when she lies
and she's not so she's all everyone in the team
she's allergic and she'll die
if they put carriand and any of her food that's how much she
dislikes it every day
I will die I'm allergic to it every day
the chef has put coriander in the food as well
here at Old Trafford so you must be struggling
She's on oxygen every night
Do you know our S&C Lewis
He would eat coriander raw
He said He'd just put it in about me
I spoke about it because we had the thing
Because I put coriander in the food the other day
I was like please don't do it again
And Lewis is like no he will eat it like
I'm so disappointing me
Like I'm so disappointing
We were getting on so well
I don't like you anymore
I told him he needs to get in the bin
Yeah put him in the dim
Yep
Last one
What is each other's character
karaoke song of choice.
May Day for LaSalle.
That's the song that's been playing nonstop in the African song that's been playing
I would go that's a karaoke.
Yeah.
I know like Sunnays, but like I will love you.
That thing of Vicky, I will always love you.
Do you do the same one?
Because you like, when myself and Sunnis sings it together.
Oh, Michie, you're so fine, you're so fine.
And you're Blum, my name, Mickey.
My name'sie.
Oh, I see.
Yeah, yeah.
It changes on quickly.
That's my own personal.
Yeah, so that's your.
I'll go over that one.
Nice.
Now, we're getting to the serious stuff.
Oh, you need to talk about my dogs now.
Oh, no, sorry.
It's Lazelle Lee versus Minion Dupree
in the famous No Balls, the Cricket Podcast quiz.
You're up against each other.
The winner gets absolutely nothing.
Dragging rights.
Give us bragging rights.
The loser clearly gets nothing to.
How do you say bragging rights in Africa's?
Oh
Bragg
Bragg is one of
its words
It's actually English
But we'll use it in African
Bragg rechter
Bragreta
That was a
Sounds like a pasta
I'll have a bit of that
Okay
Spoch
Spoch rech
Is he racked of word
Spohrachter
Please cross you say that for us
One more time

Right

Come on
Right Minion
I have your question
and Alex has got Lizelle's questions.
Is it one-one?
Or are you going to ask me a rapid fire?
No, no, no, we're going to go one versus one.
It's like a penalty shootout.
Oh.
Mignon, how many international runs have you scored?
Over 5,000.
Can you give me an exact number?
No.
5,000, have a guess.
3752.
Oh, how far.
How far?
5,312.
Oh, not yet.
I was counting me the 50 that I was scored.
That's a hundred been with that, basically.
Liselle?
That's a great effort, though.
I think we'll give it that.
Well, let's see how Luzel does.
Yes, please.
How many international runs have you scored?
Altogether?
Mm-hmm.
Quick maths.
Including that three that you scored in a test match or whatever it was.
It was four.
It was six, actually.
It was six.
Both innings or won?
A crossbowel.
I honestly have no idea.
$4,000, no, 3,000,
4,000, 2,000.
It sounds like our prison thing.
Right, okay.
Lazelle, you've actually scored 4,474 runs.
I was so close.
Until you decided you scored.
So that point is for Minion because you were closest.
Actually, we should use this opportunity to say congratulations to Minion
because you scored 100 on debut in your test match,
which is an incredible achievement.
Thank you very much.
Well done.
Lazelle, you didn't.
We move on.
Question number two.
How many international fours have you hit, Mignon?
I feel like we should have done like a step.
How many?
How many?
How do you know this?
So much better than that.
530.
You hit 18 in the test match.
Wow.
Look at you good, girl.
She got to put yourself on the back.
La Zelle, how many international?
Falls, have you hit?
You just have to get closer than I do.
290. Oh, come on. You've hit
590.
You've got to be 29 against me alone.
You ruined my international career.
Oh, I'm so sorry.
Okay, that one is Lizelle's point. So it's 1-1.
How did she get that point? Because she was closer.
I was closer. I feel like we were both really four.
No, you were. My point. Thank you.
Lizell's point. One-one. Interesting.
interesting for the day. Question number three. Mignon. You are second behind
Matali for something in one day cricket. So you hold a record and you are second in that
record. What is the record? You know, don't you? Don't you know? It's not because I'm
almost the oldest. Is that what you were employing? What? No, I think you know. Say it. Do you
really think I know? It's not most rounds. Most... No, she's the way.
Most docks.
Nope.
You are the second player to play the most consecutive matches.
As captain.
No, just 40.
In one day cricket, just the 101 consecutive games.
Wow.
Metallia was 107.
Really?
Oh, you got dropped.
Against India.
Oh, that's sad.
Let's move on.
Quick, quick turn around.
You are the first slash hold the record for what in T-T.
Most success.
What, no?
For you to question, I'll go again.
No, she doesn't, that's...
International T20 cricket.
The first?
You are the first slash hold the record
for what in T20 cricket.
I don't know.
Hi, um, is opening partnership?
You've taken the most catches in the innings.
Four.
Wow.
Was that special?
A little fist of a word.
Okay.
So there are no points for either of you there.
Yeah, it's fine.
Sorry, it's still two-two.
But it's been some good stats there.
Yeah, two-two going into the decider.
See, we did do our homework.
We just didn't know you scored a 400 in the game.
Um, I think it's time for us out to go first.
Yeah, sure.
Pressure on.
How many international wickets have you taken?
Oh, I got a man of the match in Ireland for bowling.
And I think I took three.
So I'm going to say three.
Yes.
Yes!
It's a question the same for me.
How many? I've got one into...
Yes!
Bangladesh number 11, but I've got it!
Right, so we know what actually happened.
Well, this is the thing.
Honestly, the bowlers couldn't get them out,
so they said they're going to put the pot,
I'm going to myself, wasn't the one.
I think you were bowling at the other end,
and we just tried.
Sorry, you two were bowling in tandem together
in an international game.
Right, hang on, hang on, right.
Lizelle, watch.
I was a pace bowler then.
Meniam?
I will call myself a space bowler,
so it's basically
pace from a spinner's run up.
actually ball off spin.
The ball doesn't spin in its daughters,
so I just figured space bowling.
Space bowling, you've just created something in cricket.
Yeah, they just think it will go...
I like it.
Maybe we must give it to the 100 for some of new words.
Pace, space.
Space bowl, so it's...
You can either bowl spin from a pace run up
or pace from a spinners run up.
This girl doesn't even speak English
because of first language,
and you've just created something in English.
That's incredible.
That's a good South Africans on.
You are incredible.
And you've been incredible on this podcast.
Can you ask another question to make sure one of us win?
Oh.
We prepared for the tiebreaker.
I'm going to say something in Afrikaans,
and you have to tell me what I'm saying.
You just have to pronounce Greek.
Yeah, that might be the chat.
Well, that's the game.
I'm just, sorry, I'm just thinking of a sentence to say.
I thought you said you were prepared.
Are you currently preparing for it?
I'm trying to think.
I'm trying to think of every possible word
I can actually say now.
Should we go fast as buzz of her
or are you just going to both have a go?
Can you both have a go?
Both have a go.
Okay.
Both have a go.
Just say, what you see?
Okay.
I've had Tesco
to go and a past
I went to Tesco's and
Yeah, I went to Deskos and?
Yeah, I went to Deskos and Pazboots
Gikoop.
What?
In Nepal, good,
and bought a few things
and I bought a few
I went to Tescos and I
Spuds
Spuds
And poor
Ardapoles
Potatoes
Yes
Potatoes
They called it Spots
I know
But potatoes
And bought a few potatoes
So I went to Tesco's and I bought some
Potatoes
Yeah
But she didn't buy potatoes
But Spots is
Did they actually give it two years
In Afrikaans word
Spots
I said spuds
I said spuds
Oh you said Spots
Well but it's weird
Like we don't
and use spades in Africa.
But that's fine.
That was good.
Okay, so you can win.
Yeah, Minion.
You disagree.
Now, Lizelle doesn't get.
She wants to go and watch
Big Bang Theory.
She's done.
She's like,
thank you for coming on No Balls
to Cricket podcast, guys.
You have been so much fun.
Thank you.
Thank you for having us.
Hopefully, I saw there was a few
that got invited back.
So hopefully, when we come back
next year, when we come back,
no pressure there.
Or the captain, she's got the influence.
Yeah.
we'll promise that we'll do another podcast
honestly you've been amazing thank you so thank you for having us
thank you for me and please send us as a fider when you wear your socks
okay deal deal they will come up to my knees
well that was carnage
was it can't know the the zero ducks podcast crossover was carnage
yeah that's true okay it was busy
I loved having those two on.
They made me laugh and smile so much.
And I get that from them every single day
that I'm in training with them.
They're so good to having our team, aren't they?
Yeah, they've genuinely been brilliant.
And I do feel like I was soppier than I've ever been on this podcast.
I think I'm emotional.
I don't know what's going on.
You did give them a lot of compliments.
And I'm not used to doing that on this podcast.
Well, I forgot.
In the intro, are you all right?
We didn't ask our mandatory a U.S.
No, we didn't.
Yeah, I'm all right.
I am.
I feel busy.
but I think that's part and parcel of being captain
because there's a lot that goes on off the cricket pitch
and I feel like you're the sort of captain
that really takes all that on as well
whereas I'm like me
yeah I'm a massive green
aren't I on the insights profiling
I'm a very caring person
and I worry that people aren't happy all the time
so yeah I take that on
but no I'm good I'm good I'm loving this tournament
genuinely loving it really don't want it to end actually
we've got a 2% chance
I'm making finals so yeah 2% chance
so let's give it our best go
But there is a chance.
There is a chance. You're telling me there is a chance.
And there is something else that we didn't actually mention, which I wanted to talk about.
And I've now completely forgotten what I was.
That's it.
Yeah, just something I wanted to bring up, actually.
I was on Twitter the other day, and I had a notification from a guy that I didn't know who he was,
but he had 2.5 million followers, and he had a blue tick.
And I went on my Twitter notifications, and this man had invited me.
He tweeted saying, like, love the podcast.
that just at Kate Cross 16, love the podcast,
love what you're doing,
would love you to come on my YouTube channel.
And then I looked under his tweet
and you had replied saying,
we would love to come on.
Sounds great.
And I messaged you and I was like,
are you aware that this guy invited me
