The TMS podcast from the men's C20 World Cup in Australia.
Wasim is on his way, past the armpat, Stokes waits, bat raise and heaves into the next side, that's it.
England win the T20 World Cup.
The ball trickles away towards the boundary.
Liam Livingston leaps all over Ben Stokes, and now all England's players come rushing onto the ground as well.
That's a famous win, and then mobbing Ben Stokes, who has taken in.
home here this evening well supported by Moeen but it's that man Stokes who's
kept the calm cool head when it really mattered who's finished with 52 not
out and he's made sure that England won here with an over despair and by five
wickets tremendous performance and already they're all lining up and
shaking hands I must say it's been a game that's been played an excellent
spirit the legacy I think again of
Of all the franchise cricket that's played, they all know each other so well.
A lot of respect.
People filing out below us, disappointed Pakistan supporters.
I've seen a good game of cricket.
There was some Evan Flo about it.
Yeah, it was a very good game of cricket.
And look, England were pretty much winning it all the way through.
I mean, there was a point where after about 12 overs into Pakistan's innings,
they were in a fantastic position to put on the score of about 160,
which I think would have been enough today.
But it was the bowling of Sam Curran and Adil Rashid that really set this up.
They've been fantastic throughout the tournament.
Sam Curran, for me, is the man of the series.
The way he's bowled has been, you know, he's been the best bowl of the tournament.
He's showed some high skill, great confidence.
Moin Ali is the least demonstrative person that I think we know.
But look at him.
He's waving down there.
He's pointing people out.
He's waving his stump around.
Look at that.
Punching the air.
Kisses as Moeen Alley look at him I've never seen him behave like that he's having a bit of fun he's played well today he's got 19 or 13 deliveries and he's played his part he hasn't had a chance to bowl today wasn't the ideal situation for him to come into the attack at any stage look at moey he's running off over there now look he's he's he's leapt into one of the other might be Paul Collingwood's arms there literally leapt into them well that
You can just see what this means to him, really.
Andrew Rashid as well.
Oh, fabulous, fabulous.
Security guard, he's getting a hug.
It's a good times, good times for England,
great times for English cricket, just to keep winning.
Yeah.
So good in white ball cricket.
Yeah, you look back at the tournament
and, well, we were here for the Ireland game.
And it all looked a bit horrible then.
Of course, Australia washed out.
They went a long time without playing any cricket.
There were games that they simply had to win to keep progressing.
They had to beat New Zealand, they had to beat Sri Lanka.
Of course, they did.
They got back on track again.
And then, of course, they thumped India in the semi-final.
And there was one or two little moments in this game.
One or two, we think, oh, really?
OK, it's getting a bit tight, a bit close for comfort.
But I think that confidence they've gained throughout the tournament has held in very good stead here this evening.
Oh, Moe is just shaking hands with everybody.
I've never seen him like that.
Moen?
Yes.
He's just happy.
He is very happy.
He's happy.
He normally keeps things nice and reserved, isn't he?
And very easy.
But he's really enjoying himself out there.
He's getting a bonus.
Of course he's happy.
Oh, that's true.
Of course he will.
Let's fill in the dots and the gaps.
While we're waiting for interviews and just catching up with things.
No, no, no, no, we're going straight to Henry Morat.
Yeah, let's see who we can grab.
I'm going to walk towards the England team now.
There's a cheer from Ben Stokes alongside Liam Livingstone.
Mowen Alley's alongside me as well.
Let me see if I can grab a word with Liam Livingston, who was out there in the middle.
Liam, you're live on BBC Radio.
Many congratulations.
What was it like being out there?
It was right.
He was quite calm.
As soon as I walked out, he said, let's...
Bye, ma'am!
Yes, boy!
He said, let's make two companies hit the winning runs to win England in the World Cup.
So, special.
He's phenomenal, man.
Yeah, he's done it twice to win England and the World Cup.
It's special.
Yeah, wow, what a night.
Standing in the middle of this huge venue, there's not many England fans in here,
but they've made quite some racket.
But once again, the gladiator for England, Ben Stokes has done it.
How does he keep doing this?
Yeah, he does it.
He just gets it done.
and that's what you want in this team.
So, yeah.
Boy, it's going to be a long night.
Right, we'll catch up with those interviews
as they come in.
I've got an eye down there on Henry,
who's lurking around there.
All the England players are still shaking hands
with everybody that they possibly can.
If you're just joining us, England of won,
they've won this World Cup with an over
and five wickets to spare.
And the biggest miracle of the day,
and I really mean it, is that it hasn't rained.
There was one fleeting moment
of about 20 seconds where the rain came,
but the forecast that was so apocalyptic that actually they added extra time on today.
This game could have gone on to round about course to midnight.
Such was the forecast.
And somehow, don't ask me, someone was smiling down on this game today.
And it's managed to absolutely take place throughout with no interruptions.
And it's the England players who are smiling as a result of that.
Pakistan's 137 for 8 never really seemed to be enough.
Unless, of course, they got away to a good start with a ball, which was always possibility with their attack.
And they did, too. Alex Hales was bowled in the first over by Shahin Shah Afridi for just one.
Phil Solter hasn't played very much.
May 10.
Josh Butler, 26.
Brooke 20 was caught down at Longoff.
And then Mowin came out, played a little sprite leadings of 19 from 12 balls all the time.
They're supporting Ben Stokes, who started to go through the gears.
He started carefully and quietly as we thought that he would.
And then, of course, he's played himself in.
He hit five, fours and a six, and finish up 52 not out
with Liam Livingston coming in when Mowing was bowled for 19
to hit that one run.
Pakistan were without Shain Shire Friedi.
You will never know if that would have made a difference or not.
But the big fast bowler took a catch.
He caught Brooke down at Longoff.
There's something to his foot to his ankle or something like that.
Went off, was treated.
came back on but could manage only one ball.
And Iftaka Ahmed, who came on to complete that over,
went for 13, including a six at the end.
And that was obviously very difficult for Pakistan
to try and cover the loss of their fast bowler.
Alex, you're sitting alongside me now as well.
What did you think of that?
Oh, I mean, amazing, isn't it?
You know, Ben Stokes, he stuck around for a while.
His strike rate was 60 for a long time for all that innings.
And then he had that over where he went,
six and really brought England back into the game.
I mean, we can see all the England players now out there,
hugging each other, saluting their families.
What they'll be feeling right now is pure elation, pure relief.
It's such a great feeling.
Ravi knows it as well when all your dreams come true
and you've done what you finally or what you have been working hard for.
Yeah, Ben Stokes.
Let's get both your thoughts on that.
Go on Alex.
You go first.
I mean, it was the way that we knew he had play.
He had that bit of time at the start of his inning.
he didn't have to come out crash bang wallop he could actually play himself in and be there at the end and that was clear what he had to do yeah again you look back at ben stokes and you go England's hero because he's the way he's played but had he got out when he was struggling he'd have put a lot of pressure on you know mowing alley and Liam livingston but what he does so well he rides that wave when he knows he's struggling he sticks around he's a gritty player is a big game player there's a lot of question marks over him before this tournament should he be playing is he good enough to be playing and he's got England
over the line in two crucial games now where the results matter.
Ben Stokes, Ravi?
I think it was a very experienced knock.
I mean, yes, at times he was very lucky.
With those probably, there was a period where he played a miss
probably 10 balls in a row against Nassim Shah,
but you make your own luck.
You know, he hung around, he hung around.
And managed to get England over the line.
It was brilliant.
England deserved to win in the end.
And it was set up.
Now, how does it feel?
Let's listen to Sam Curry.
Yeah, very special.
I don't think I should be getting this.
I think the way Stokesy played there to get a 50 in a final.
He does it so many times for us.
And yeah, we're going to enjoy this occasion and yeah, very special.
Operating on that surface, what was the key for you?
Give us some insight into how you went about your work with 3'412.
Yeah, they obviously had big square boundaries.
So I knew my into the wicket type bowling would work, try and make them hit square of the wicket.
of the wicket. We felt the wicket wasn't as good as we thought it would be.
It obviously offered for the seam as you saw how well the Pakistan bowlers bowled.
It was nipping around everywhere and it was a challenge for the chase, definitely.
How important then was pace off the ball versus pace on as we have a look at your wickets?
Yeah, it was. I think obviously the way I bowl in this in this type of ground,
I go into the wicket with my slow balls and just try and keep the batsman guessing.
But yeah, really pleased that I don't actually, we would
world champions how good you mentioned Ben Stokes there knowing you didn't you
weren't there in 2016 but just what he went through and has been going through
to this point how do you feel about his performance yeah it's incredibly
special I think he's someone I've always looked up to he always turns up when
the team needs to and people question him but there's no questioning him he's
unbelievable and you saw in that scenario he did it against Sri Lanka well
he's the man
There's still more accolades coming your way because a jury consisting of Mel Jones,
a co-commentator, Shibneright Chandapal and ICC Hall of Famer,
Bartow Badri, a journalist for Times of India,
Wazim Khan, the ICC general manager of cricket and the fancote
have chosen you as the player of this tournament.
13 wickets at 11.3, a economy rate of 6.5.
Only one player has more wickets above you in the tournament.
How do you feel about the way that you have got?
on tournament-wise across your improvement?
Yeah, to be honest, I'm a like I said, a little bit lost for words and it's been a great
tournament for us and yeah, amazing.
As I said, we're going to enjoy this my first time in the World Cup.
We won a World Cup in front of this amazing crowd so, and yeah, thank you two amazing fans
that came out tonight.
And since I was part of that panel as well, I'm going to finish off by asking you
how much more improvement do you think is on the line for you all round as a player?
Yeah, always. I think coming into this tournament, I wanted to be adaptable.
I obviously haven't bowled at the death as much in my career, and that's an area I always want to keep working at.
But yeah, and even with the bat, keep kind of work on my batting in this lineup, it's incredibly hard to get up there.
But I may be needed, I may have been needed this evening.
So I'm always looking to improve, but not thinking about that now, we will champ, so how good.
Thank you.
There he goes.
Sam Keran, not as a man of the match, but of the tournament for his 13 wickets and economy
rate of around about six runs per over.
He really has had an outstanding tournament, that is for sure.
Henry Moran is busy out there.
I can see him wandering around with his pink smock on, and he caught up with Mark Woodie.
If you've got a second, you'll have to bear with us.
It's slightly chaotic down here.
I will see if I can grab Mark Wood, as he wanders back.
Everybody, live on BBC Radio.
How are you, mate?
Many congratulations.
Delighted, you know, fantastic double champions,
50 over, 20 over.
Great feeling.
Talk me through your emotions,
obviously difficult last few days,
but I can see from your relation
what this means for you.
I'm just so pleased for everybody in the group,
say, seriously.
I'm just so pleased to everybody.
Stokes at the end,
Magnificent, Junior has been class all tournament.
And I'm so pleased for Dave as well.
And I missed out just in the 50,
oh, he's got a medal here on the 12th.
over so pleased for Josh I could go on and on and that's great the group are kind of
fantastic togetherness love it what about your fellow Durham man Ben Stokes he just
does it doesn't he you know the man you want in those situations is a legend you
know at times he didn't hit them as clean as he wants but he was there at the end
when it mattered sorted it up time to time again he's the man for us right you
go and enjoy those celebrations thank you Woody there we are Mark Wood who played
a big part in England getting through to this stage
and from the semifinals onwards of course he was injured couldn't play but what
you hear there is typical the man really full of praise and joy for those who
were able to play and to see him giving Chris Jordan a big hug there at the end the
man who came in and replaced him was actually very heartening indeed the players
have sort of milling around there but the times of the presentations and so on
now the umpires are down there as well that Arland game does seem a long way off
now doesn't it I mean that could have been Ravi just if it didn't feel good round
They're not just the fact that they've lost the game on run rate technicality, if you like,
but didn't feel very smart.
I think that was the main problem with that.
They were behind on the DLS and didn't really make much an effort to get ahead of it.
No, and I can understand that, but you know, you can't be perfect throughout a tournament.
You're going to make mistakes, and that mistake came at the right time for England.
And they came against Ireland, and they woke up, they woke up a sleeping lion.
They came out and they just were aggressive after that, and they blew everything.
everybody else off the park they've been the best team in the tournament they were
unlucky to lose that game they shouldn't have lost that game and they were just
accelerating I know they were accelerating a little bit late but I think they would
have knocked that off in the end and they would have gone throughout the tournament
undefeated which you can't say for the rest of the for the rest of the teams in
the tournament nobody's looked the same class as England and the right team is
lifting the trophy today yeah now we can hear from the England captain
Josh Butler speaking to Henry Moran Josh Butler the England captain
is with me. Joss, how are you feeling?
I'm immensely proud.
It hasn't sunk in at all, obviously.
I mean, what an unbelievable effort
from everyone to get, you know,
to win the game. And they're a bit speechless, to be
honest. You had to watch
an awful lot of that run chase from the dugout.
How were your emotions through that?
Good, at some parts, terrible at others.
You know, at the halfway stage of the chase,
I think we needed 61, and it felt
like everything was under control.
And they bowled really well for a period
that created some great pressure.
But that man again, Ben Stokes, he just knows how to get it done.
You've been part of World Cup winning sides before, now a double world champion.
Hard to say I know at this moment how it compares, but does this bring back memories?
Yeah, it feels really different, actually, to be honest.
I think different time, different place, everything, different, a lot of different group as well, maybe.
But just immensely proud.
I think both are just incredible.
I don't know what to say.
World Cup winning captain now, Josh.
Feels good.
Well played.
Loss for words, there you go.
I think possibly is how you do feel as England captain.
When you lift the World Cup at the first time of asking, of course,
only a fairly recent appointment.
And we should say about Matthew Mott as well, you know.
During last summer at home, Ravi, the one day set up,
sort of sailed quietly underneath, off the radar, really,
as the test team was going about its business.
And actually, their white ball campaign last summer wasn't actually particularly good.
And you start thinking, how are they going to go in this World Cup?
Well, they did beat Pakistan, of course, in that seven-match series there of T-20s.
But there does seem to be some momentum running now.
And certainly any thoughts that one might have had about this one-day team,
well, it's really blown away here.
No, they've always been a very good one-day team.
And England's now one of the smartest teams in the world.
I think England, many, many years ago, were probably guilty of just not being smart enough.
and they're not willing to adapt to conditions and situations but you know the way
players are talk about the game now and and the way players develop in in the
T20 blast and going around playing franchise tournaments that you know franchise
tournaments has really really improved English cricket in T20 I mean
all those boys down there playing franchise cricket they've learned so much from
just being a bit more smarter and adaptable because of playing in different
conditions and playing against other streetwise cricketers and yeah well let's listen to
Mel Jones she's officiating the world Wamanjika welcome to the final presentation
Barbara Azam the last there is giving Remy's Raja who runs Pakistan
cricket these days and who took the catch here 30 years ago to win the World
Cup for Pakistan I remember it very well at mid-off well he's not clutching a trophy
tonight to our all-friend Ramiz 20 World Cup final for you and a lot of the
the players, you had a magnificent crowd.
This is Babur Azam now.
It felt like a home crowd.
I know you didn't get the result you wanted,
but you must be very, very proud of the team
after losing the first two games of this tournament.
Of course, first of all,
congratulations to England team.
They deserve our champion and they fought well.
And yes, we feel like home.
Everyone come here and support us.
And every venue, when we are playing over there,
different grounds, so everyone come and support us.
Thank you so much.
to come and watch us match definitely.
First two game loss, they cost us,
but the way the team is back in the last four matches,
unbelievable and all the credit to my team,
they've fared very well.
Imran Khan in 1992 told his team to play like caged tigers.
What did you say to the boys at the start of the day?
Yeah, just only I try to pass the message,
just play a natural game and freedom,
and but I think we, I think,
I think we have a 20 runs short, but the way we have a fight and until they last over, unbelievable, and all credit to boys.
Talking about fight, 137 on the board, it seemed under par, but with your bowling attack that's been magnificent all tournament, you stayed in there right to the end.
Of course, our bowling is one of the best attack in the world, and the way he started in the first six hour.
But unfortunately, Shaheen injury caused us, so maybe different reasons.
but it is part of the game.
Barbara, thank you so much for entertaining everyone here and right throughout the tournament.
Thank you so much.
Very dignified response there from Pakistan's captain.
And now can the victorious England team come and receive their medals for Martin Dalo, Deputy B?
Mowen.
So, they're going to make their way up, led by Moeen, who's the vice captain.
The last one will be Josh Butler, because we'll hear another quick chat with him, I'm sure.
chat with him I'm sure as England's players come up Harry Brooks got a big smile on his face
there Sam Cullen again his second visit to the podium Alex Hales and he's got a good
tournament Hales I think that he wasn't originally selected for this and he's only here
because that freakish accident to Johnny Beirstow on the golf course but anyway he's
on he's had a really excellent excellent tournament
Ben Stokes will hear from him in a moment too. He's been talking to to Henry Moran and also we'll hear from Matthew Mott as well.
The new one-day coach who will be delighted that he's lifted this.
Everybody holds the women's.
He's added the men's to that as well which is quite something.
So we've almost come down to the point where Josh Butler is going to come up.
And answer some pretty straightforward questions, as Mark Wood disappointed, but still with a smile on his face.
Josh Butler's got his cap off.
He's got the winner's medal around his neck.
And he's going to wander over now and say a few words with Mel Jones.
Joss, England has changed the way in which the game has played in terms of white ball cricket over the last six to seven years.
Is this the icing on the cake?
Yeah, it is.
you know to be able to win the T20 World Cup now as well with just immensely
proud of everyone here absolutely it's been a long journey a few changes over
of how we've played over the last few years and we're reaping the rewards of
that talk about changes you've only been captain for six months you'll be
saying this is pretty easy well well Matthew Mott's doing alright isn't he
as well so yeah it's been a fantastic tournament I thought you know we've been
away for a long time we went to Pakistan before coming here which was a
really valuable time for the group and this felt a long way away after the
island match here as well but the character we showed from that point on in
must-win games every time it's been amazing you must have really jelled with
Matthew Modd as well it's only 18 months ago that he was standing here collecting a
middle taking the Australian women's cricket team to a T20 World Cup final yeah but
he's fitted in really well now we've got quite a few Australians with us in this
tournament but now he's led the coaching staff fantastically well he gives the
players, great freedom and allows us to go out and trust ourselves.
Speaking of trust, you've got so much trust in your bowlers.
Liam Livinson gets targeted for 16 runs.
You throw the ball back to Adil Rashid, gets Bubba's arm and a wicket made, and it just
swings things back in your favor.
Yeah, it did.
Absolutely.
There's a huge swing in the game.
That was a fantastic over from Adil.
You know, the last three games, especially, he's been outstanding for us.
And he's always been the guy that we've thrown the ball to to make things happen.
and his performance was outstanding.
I said to Barbara 137 seemed under par,
but there was still something in the wicket, wasn't it?
Yeah, there certainly was.
I thought when you hit the right length,
it seemed there was a little bit of seam movement.
They're obviously bowling at good pace
and bowling very attacking, and yeah,
it certainly wasn't easy at all,
and we managed to get away to a decent staff
which controlled the run rate.
We backed deep as well,
which gave us a lot of options and trust,
and yeah, that man again.
Ben Stokes is just there at the end.
Perfect segue.
Let's talk about him.
What is it about Ben Stokes that he just rises for the occasion in the toughest of situations?
Yeah, he does.
He's the ultimate competitor in anything he does.
And I think he's got a hell of a lot of experience to bank on as well.
He can take a lot on his shoulders.
And at times, you know, you're thinking it must be time for him to go and get us over that line.
But he timed it perfectly.
I thought that the impetus he and Mowing Ali had at that phase of the game.
at that phase of the game just took it away from Pakistan I did read that you gave
yourself a little minute to sort of dream about lifting the trophy well it's
not a dream it's real pinch yourself go and collect your trophy thank you
very much so Josh Butler will go and join his teammates are waiting for him on the
podium and the trophy is being handed to him now and any moment now he is
He's making us wait.
Up it goes.
And England's players are all jumping up and down in celebration.
I hope the podium could take it.
They're all on there, leaping about.
We've got some pretty spectacular fireworks, actually.
The best of the tournament so far.
Yes, those blowers are blowing glitter all over the place.
In fact, we can't see the players.
Now the seagulls are scattering.
And there's fireworks exploding from all parts of the MCG,
outside and inside, too.
and lighting up this cold black sky.
Wonderful scene for an England supporter.
That glitter just blowing very slowly on the breeze.
Going from right to left, the burners are going up.
The last blast of fireworks.
And England's players are all taking it in turns now
to lift that trophy.
I see Leib Livingston's about to give it a go.
He had a terrific tournament in the field
where it's so important.
The ball has kept picking him out.
Brilliant catching.
Chris Jordan's having a go.
You might hear the cheer.
There he go.
Great smile on his face.
Barkwood.
Well, he's always smiling.
Here, Chris Wilkes are doing it together.
A joint raising of that ICCT20 World Cup.
So, as the glitter falls to the ground, Ravi,
let's have a quick chat about the tournament as a whole, really,
and what you...
what do you think about it and whether it's been a success it's it's always
easy to judge it's been a success when the team they've come out to
to follow and to report on and to combat it on wins it but what about the
whole the whole tournament itself it's gone well I think it's been one of the
best T20 World Cups you know the upsets and everything that have been
involved in this World Cup have been brilliant and it's kept everybody on
their toes you know there was never a stage where the group was finalized which
is a great place to be in a World Cup.
It just keeps everybody interested.
Again, I'll mention the upsets were brilliant.
They were great to watch.
India, Pakistan was a game.
What a game that was.
I mean, the two biggest cricketing nations going head to head
and it coming down to the last over, the last ball.
It was just a fantastic World Cup.
And some low scores as well, which, you know,
you don't want to be playing in World Cuts
where it's just 200, place, 200 all the time.
You know, if you win the toss, you win the game kind of World Cup.
This was fair.
This was even field, I thought.
And one of the great things that have come out of this World Cup, I think, is the lesser teams that we thought were the lesser teams, like the islands, the Netherlands and the Zimbabweans.
We've seen actually how much they've improved.
They've actually caught up a long way.
And I just want to say a massive award on to those teams who made the effort to really catch up to the rest of the
the world. Nice sight down there. I see Adir Rashid and Mowin Alley both holding their children.
We assumed that the family were there, whether Mowing was behaving, or somehow his young children
have made it down through the labyrinth that there is below us here. They made it the way out
into the middle, which is fantastic. And they're there with their fathers, very proud fathers,
with winners medals around their neck. And they're disappointed. I mean, someone like West Indies.
for them to have crashed out so early
I mean that's a real wake-up call for them
and again demonstrates
that in this very short form of the game
there isn't actually a huge amount of difference
between those who work hard, play hard
and get it right on the day
against a much more experienced team
but who gets it wrong on the day
yeah and look West Indies have been
a massive disappointment in T20 cricket
over the last couple of years
I think they're still living off
the gale era
and the DJ
Bravo and you know those guys that won the World Cup for them a couple of
World Cups for them they it's a real worry for the West Indian place they
demanded all over the world you know they they weren't big contracts around
the world and not being able to get through to this Super 12 stages is a huge
worry for for West Indies they got to get better and they got to turn to the
likes of the experienced players who did win World Cups for help
They need them up there in the coaching staff if they can get them in and really change West Indies cricket league.
Lovely to see so many families here.
Just Butler's family I see his wife and kids and David Willie's family and his children as well.
It's a real family do and they have been away a long time.
Let's not forget going off to Pakistan, of course, first and then the other games that have been here.
Let's catch up then finally.
Finally, we've been tantalizing you about hearing from Ben Stokes.
I can see swigging something from a bottle there at the moment.
But Henry Moran caught up with Stokes.
Ben, thank you.
Well played.
How are you feeling?
Yeah, good, really good.
Amazing night.
Yeah, good.
There's one thing that all of your teammates have said to me this evening.
As long as Ben was out there, we knew we'd be fine.
Yeah, look, I think looking at the scoreball and just assessing the situation and trying
look to where I think we would be at, you know, sort of with the last three, four overs left.
It simplifies everything for me.
So, yeah, I'd rather be out there trying to affect the game than being in the dugout
and saying, oh, I wonder what's going to happen.
How do you keep doing this?
When the backs are against the wall, how do you keep pulling it out of the far for England?
I don't think necessarily our backs are sort of up against the wall.
I thought we were always ahead of the game.
It was, you know, when it got to the end, hey, no, thanks you, mate.
Cheers, buddy.
sort of out game to lose I thought
but tricky wicket
sort of I don't know
it started bouncing and as the ball got older
which is a bit weird but the bowl isn't the first
I've got to take a credit for that
for restricting them to 135
Sam done it all tournament
and rash you know he's turned up
in the big moments for us at the back end of the tournament
as he always does
he bowled I think that's the best I've seen
on bowl in their T20 for England
he was amazing so yeah for them to be able
to restrict them to 135 they've got to take a lot of credit
for this and I think that's a huge reason
why I won the game.
First time in the men's game, the World Cup has been held in 50 overs and T-20s by one side.
This is a special white ball unit, isn't it?
Good point, actually, yeah.
Didn't really take that in until you mentioned that, but I think it shows sort of where
we're at as a team.
You know, we all know the talent that we possess in here.
We are, you know, match winners and we all are very clear and we have a lot of clarity from
Joss and the management about how we want to go and play our cricket.
So when you're clear and you understand what the team ethos and the goal is, it makes
going out there and playing a lot easier.
Just finally, how proud are you of this achievement?
Yeah, very, very proud.
It's, you know, World Cups, you don't get to win them that often.
So, yeah, I guess to say that we've won two now, pretty special.
Well, done, Ben.
Many congratulations.
Ben Stokes there.
Did play well today.
We've talked a lot about the weather and the rain.
If you are inclined and you want to log on to BOMBOM.com.com.A.U.
and just click on to the Melbourne radar loop
you will see how incredibly lucky
we've been to have this gameplay today
it's like the parting of the Red Sea
on the to our right to the northeast
it's hammering down
and to our left to the west
and the southwest ferocious red-colored storms
and somewhere in the middle there just peeking out is Melbourne
we really have been incredibly lucky
to have had this match played today
Let's hear from England's coach, Matthew Mott, speaking to ABC's Andrew Moore.
Matthew Mott, the English coach, just getting a hug from Adam Gilchrist.
Monty, great to see you. Congratulations. What a year this has been for you?
Yeah, thanks, Maury. It's a pretty special way to finish the cricket for a while here.
I thought it was an amazing occasion.
The Pakistan crowd were exceptional the night and in full voice, so it was great to get the win.
Winning the toss, bowling first, very different conditions to Adelaide where you're so dominant against India.
That's a great effort by the bowling group and the fielding group to keep them to 137.
It was brilliant.
I think as Pakistan showed, it was a bit of a tricky wicket at times.
And I gave the quicks a little bit of assistance.
But, you know, I think obviously when we sent them in,
we were sort of hoping anything under 160 would have been what we're looking at.
And to get them for that low on that was a great effort.
And, you know, we had that little time in the middle where we had to scrap a few runs.
I thought they bowled exceptionally well, but come home strong.
You can't imagine you would have wanted to face Nasim Sharwell.
he's beating the outside edge of Ben Stokes.
What have you learned about Ben Stokes?
This guy just wins games.
There are some people even questioning his selection
in this T20 World Cup,
but he's done it again.
He's won another game for it.
Yeah, he does.
And, you know, coming into the tournament,
you know, you heard that criticism
and just knew that it would fire him up
and, you know, bring out some big performances.
With the ball, this tournament,
it's been great for us,
often taking the first over
and leading the way.
And two beginnings now under pressure
and he's delivered, so fantastic.
Amazing performance.
There have been some hiccups.
I heard you speak with Corbyn after the semi-final win.
You were straight into it in the Netherlands for a few games.
Now all of a sudden a few months later,
you're the T20 Men's World Cup champion
to go with your world titles
when you were coaching the Australian women's team.
What does this mean for you?
It's very special.
I think any World Cup is a special event
and I think we turned up here today
with wanting to put on a show and enjoy it.
But yeah, it's certainly that you never like to compare any of them,
but they're all equally as much fun and great,
but I'm going to really enjoy tonight with the boys
I think we've worked really hard for this
and particularly the coaching staff
have really set this up well so we're excited
Spell one more player Adil Rashid
the role he's played especially in the last few games
wickets were hard to come by early on
but he just turned the tide against Sri Lanka and the semi
and again today so economical
he's been unbelievable in the last few games
you know I think we played in Pakistan a bit
he learned a few lessons against these guys
and I think it held him in good stead
I thought he slowed it up beautifully today on this on that
pitch and yeah he's a real match winner Sam Karen wins player of the final he could win
player of the tournament he started with a five for ten performance and hasn't looked back
yeah I'm really pleased with Sam I think there's a couple of games where he left him
out during the summer and he was really disappointed and miss out but he reacted in the
right way came back really strong and delivered on the world stage so yeah he's a he's
been an absolute boom for our team Monty couldn't be happy for you mate long way from
doing WBL together at Dremoyne on the boundary rope but enjoy it congratulations
thanks mate your shirts haven't got any better either
and they never will.
Matthew, Mark the England coach.
With Andrew Moore, yes, he does wear the most dreadful shirts.
Well, I feel sorry for the ground staff
because they've got a lot of stuff to clear up tomorrow.
All this glitter, of course, now lying on the ground.
Their photographs are still being taken.
It's a very, very happy seeing as we start to say goodbye to you
from Melbourne.
The players are actually heading off.
They found some England supporters at the far end.
They're on a lone Indian flag flying defiantly as well,
how they would love to have been here.
Ravi, have you enjoyed yourself?
Thank you for your company.
your first didn't be on the microphone for the test match special yeah it's been
brilliant it's been a great experience and a hundred percent record that's true
a hundred percent record you've talked me an awful lot about t20 cricket i'll be honest
about that you have you've shone a light uh and you have you've explained it all really well so
thank you uh for all of that so of course you can watch highlights of this final on the bbc
sport website and app there's lots of cricket still to come we're back with commentary
on the Australia, England, one-day internationals.
They start on Thursday.
Look out for the timings of those, to be precise.
And then, yeah, we'll be there in Pakistan
for the test series from December at the first.
The first test match is in Raw Pindi on the first.
We've got a Moulton and then to Karachi back just in time for Christmas.
