Welcome to the weekend edition of the Daily Stoic. Each weekday we bring you a meditation
inspired by the ancient Stoics, something to help you live up to those four Stoic virtues
of courage, justice, temperance, and wisdom. And then here on the weekend we take a deeper dive into those same topics.
We interview stoic philosophers, we explore at length how these stoic ideas can be applied
to our actual lives and the challenging issues of our time. Here on the weekend when you have a
little bit more space when things have slowed down, be sure to take
some time to think, to go for a walk, to sit with your journal, and most importantly, to
prepare for what the week ahead may bring.
A new you for a new year.
It's kind of crazy to think about how recent December 2019 feels.
Not that long ago, it seems like we were
getting ready for what a new decade might bring us. And it's even crazier when the truth settles
in that 2019 was four years ago. We're almost halfway into that new decade. So much has changed,
so much has happened. But at the same time, so little has changed. We're still struggling with
the same things. The aspirations we had back in 2019, this is the year we were going to turn over a new leaf, lose weight, start
the big project, learn a new language work on our temper, it's still there. That potential
is still waiting to be realized. To that end, the great Stoic Epictetus has the perfect
question for us. How long are you going to wait before you demand the best for yourself? How much time are we going to let escape us?
Hopefully, not much longer.
The main thing is that we stop expecting this to simply happen.
In one of the best passages in Mark's Realises Meditations,
Mark's Realises tells himself to stop hoping and be his own savior while he can.
And it's great advice.
It's the advice to follow here as we stand on the precipice of a new year, 2024.
And it's the advice at the core of the Daily Stoke New Year,
New Year Challenge, 21 actionable challenges presented.
One per day built around the best, most timeless wisdom
in stoke philosophy.
And it's the idea it's gonna help you take control
and make 2024 your best year yet.
Every year, this year right in front of you,
can be the best year of your life.
That's what the Stoics would say.
The one where you become your best,
your most creative, your most centered, your most resilient,
your most self-reliant self.
You have to be willing to step into difficulty
because like lifting weights, growth can't happen
without some resistance.
