On Sundays, we take a deeper dive into these ancient topics with excerpts from the Stoic texts, audiobooks that we like here or recommend here at Daily Stoic, and other long-form wisdom that you can chew on on this relaxing weekend. We hope this helps shape your understanding of this philosophy and most importantly, that you're able to apply it to your actual life.
Starting point is 00:02:12 Thank you for listening. Hey, it's Ryan Holiday. Welcome to another Sunday episode of the Daily Stoic Podcast. So obviously, you know, we record next door, not in the bookstore for the podcast. Originally, when we set up the painted porch, the idea was we'd use it as a studio space where I'd record stuff. Well, the bookstore is a, you know, a champagne problem. The bookstore's done so good, we can't shut it down to record stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:44 And you know, even when we would, we would reach the doors and people be like hang on the door trying to get in here into the windows are very distracting. I guess wonderful i love that you're all coming but we had to set up some studio space to start doing the podcast we do that next door but. Everyone who comes in when we do in person person, they wanna walk around the bookstore. And we end up talking about books in the interview. And so sort of at the end, I've started as I wrap up the interviews, I go, you wanna go check out some books?
Starting point is 00:03:12 And we walk next door and we check out books and we just talk for a while and we started realizing a bunch of good stuff is happening. And if you're a reader like me, it's a great way to find out about books and hear what people thought about them or interesting takes on them. So we mic up now and we walk over to the bookstore. And I think one of the first guests we did that with was Tom Segura, the comedian.
Starting point is 00:03:33 If you haven't seen his new special Sledgehammer, it's very good. He's got a wonderful book, I'd Like to Play Alone, Please, which we carry in the bookstore. As it happens, the two of the college age kids that work in the bookstore as it happens, the two of the college-age kids that work in the bookstore are huge Tom Segura fans, and they were like, can we work that day? We really want him to sign our copy. So he came in and did that, and we just walked around the bookstore.
Starting point is 00:03:54 He told me he was really looking for more books on World War II, so that's mostly what we talked about, although some Steven Pressfield and some Rick Rubin pop in there. And here's me and Tom Segura walking around the Painted Porch riffing on talking about books. Hopefully you find some that you like in here that you haven't read. And of course, a link to those copies in the show notes.
Starting point is 00:04:17 But grab them anywhere books are sold. The idea of the Painted Porch is it's only books that I love that I've read or my wife has read that we really like that we highly recommend. And so this is basically what happens if you come to the Painted Porch that I've read or my wife has read that we really like that we highly recommend. And so this is basically what happens if you come to the painted porch and I'm there or she's there and you go, what should I read? This is sort of the treatment that you'd end up getting. Well, this is me giving it to Tom Segura.
Starting point is 00:04:34 You can follow his podcast, Two Bears and Your Mom's House with his wife Christina P who's also been on the podcast. And if you wanna listen to my big interview with Tom Uh, that was I guess last year i'll link to that also, but in the meantime, here's me and tom sagura walking through the painted porch Talking books Yeah, what what got you into world war two Uh documentaries, okay. What did you into World War II? Documentaries. Did you watch the Ken Burns documentary?
Starting point is 00:05:08 I don't know who made it. There's like a long Ken Burns documentary about World War II that's like maybe the best. What have been his? We'll do Walter Ward's Dunkirk, which is incredible, and then he has Day of Infamy, which is about Pearl Harbor, and then did you read Splendid in the Viola? Yeah. All right, that's about the Blitz.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Oh, you know the thing is I've been talking about the Blitz? Really? Yeah, and I haven't read it. You just put it on here. But I talk about it on stage. What were you talking about? British slang and how it originated from the Blitz and how Churchill addressed his secretary and that's the origin of it.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Okay, so this one's incredible. Splendid in the Bile is about how basically the Blitz is the worst thing that ever happened but also brings out the best of people as it's happening. So it's really incredible. If you get into Churchill, there's a three-part Churchill series, but it's there about 800 pages each, so that might be too much. Have you ever studied the or learned about the Battle of Midway? I have, yes, there's a book. Let me see if I have, I don't know if Justin's here, but we should have Steve under. Thank you for signing those.
Starting point is 00:06:32 Just look through some of these right here? Yeah, or whichever. Oh, anywhere? Yeah, you don't have to... Broken the sections? Yeah, yeah. There's kind of a thing, I think, a little... So I would do...
Starting point is 00:06:44 These are the World War II books I would study. This is about Devin Kirk, which is like the craziest thing that ever happened, which is how they got like almost 200,000 British people off the beach when they were in France. So like, you know when he does his famous speech about how we're fighting on the beaches. This is them first they have to rescue the British army which is caught in France and this is about Pearl Harbor which is incredible. And this is a memoir of the Pacific which is good. And then this is... By the way, have you read this?
Starting point is 00:07:21 Yes, of course. Great. It's pretty good. Is it also like, is it on writing again? Yeah, it's his memoir about it. So it's kind of, I would say government cheese is like the stories between all the stories in the war of art. So it's like what he was actually doing as he was learning all this. Okay, I'm buying this. And then this one I told this guy about because the joke in Sledgehammer about Confederate statues, you'm buying this. Okay. He sent me a bunch of them. And then this one,
Starting point is 00:07:45 I told this guy about, because the joke in Sledgehammer about Confederate statues, you have to read this one. Okay. It's basically this dude, he goes to Lee University, he grows up in the South, he teaches at West Point, and so he grows up thinking Robert Lee is one thing, and then sort of comes to this realization. Yes, and then he's the head of the the naming commission that's renaming. They're like hey maybe it's crazy that we named US military bases after literal traitors. Yeah. And so that's his thing but he wrote an amazing book. You would like that book. Do you want to know something hilarious that you just learned about him?
Starting point is 00:08:19 Yes. So he's friends with Hugh Ruhman. Yes. And then he's like hey Hugh and I'm friends with him. And then he's like, hey Rick wants to hang out with you. I was like, I want to hang out with him. I'm like, what's he like? He goes, he loves wrestling. I'm like, what? Yeah, he does. He loves wrestling.
Starting point is 00:08:35 No dude, 10 hours a week. That's insane. 10 hours a week. And I go, what the fuck are you talking about? He says it's like the only thing that's real. Because they know the outcome and it's like he has this whole Yeah, there's like a whole like intellectual crowd that's really into wrestling. Yeah, but that's news to me Yeah, the show time about no stars about wrestling. How's the
Starting point is 00:08:59 Steven Kingwood, that's pretty good. Are you Bruce Springsteen fan? No, not at all No, but I like that you asked me and I'm glad that I was honest with you. Better to not pretend. Not a fan! Hello, I'm Emily, one of the hosts of Terribly Famous, the show that takes you inside the lives of our biggest celebrities. Some of them hit the big time overnight, some had to plug away for years, but in our latest series we're talking about a man who was world famous before he was even born. A life of extreme privilege that was mapped out from
Starting point is 00:09:42 the start, but left him struggling to find his true purpose. A man who, compared to his big brother, felt a bit, you know, spare. Yes, it's Prince Harry. You might think you know everything about him, but trust me, there's even more. We follow Harry and the obsessive, all-consuming relationship of his life, not with Meghan, but the British tabloid press. Hounded and harassed, Harry is taking on an institution almost every bit as powerful as his own royal family.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Follow Terribly Famous wherever you listen to podcasts, or listen early and ad-free on free on Wandery Plus on Apple podcasts or the Wandery app. You want to do this? Oh, sure, sure. Day of Infamy, Dunkirk. These are the two Walter Lord books. Then we did With the Old Bree Bree, which is about the War in the Pacific. Oh and then Splendid in the Vile. This is the Eric Larson book. It's crazy good. Where did that one go? I know. Ah, Splendid in the Vile. This is about the Blitz in London.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Alright, these are your World War II books. Your wife shamed us for reading fiction. She told us. She said to say hi. And that she loves the set. Oh really? I sent her a picture. Yeah, she was freaking out because of the Joan Didion table. Oh really?
Starting point is 00:11:22 Have you read his new stuff? Is there a new one by Easton Ellis? Uh, I've never read any of his new stuff. Just the old ones. What are you looking for? What do you want? I would like to read these. Do you mostly do physical or do you do audio books?
Starting point is 00:11:44 I do mostly physical. Have you read Shadowdivers? This is also a World War II book. Actually, this one's incredible. They are diving to get this German submarine that sunk off the coast of New Jersey. It's all about deep sea diving. But it's a crazy good story. Really? Did you watch The you watch the deepest breath the deepest breath on no that doc Netflix
Starting point is 00:12:12 Free divers. Oh, no, it's fucking nuts. We have to do there. They go so far Yeah, like and then say four and a half minutes They black out on the way up in In Shadow Divers they mix the oxygen with like some other gas. Here's one. I'll have you take a picture. Sorry. You should have talked about Orion. You know I didn't tell you, I went up with the Blue Angels last week.
Starting point is 00:12:44 Oh really? In where? Pensacola. Oh wow. Yeah. In F18, we did like the full experience. Who's fired? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Oh man. Oh you read, do you know Steve Rinella at all? I know, I know who he is, there. How are you doing? You read, do you know Steve Brunello at all? I know who he is, no. Is it good? This book on buffalo is real, this you wouldn't think would be good, but it's actually incredible.
Starting point is 00:13:13 You get to tag to hunt a buffalo, and so he goes out to shoot it, and it's a story about the species in America and how they're getting loved. This I love, by the way. It's pretty amazing. I remember that was one of the first ones that I was like, you know, like I'm saying like my interest in doing it.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Yes, yeah, yeah. And then when you read someone who's so good, they make you care about the things that they care about. I mean, I was like so blown away by it. Oh yeah, did you get government cheese? That was the only one you wanted. Yeah, I did. Did you read this one? Yeah, I've read all of them. You've read everything?
Starting point is 00:13:48 All of them. Yeah, but they're very, very short. How was that one? It's good. I mean, you have someone who's so good. I think Turner and Perot are one of our, of course, the best ones. But Government Cheese is very good. You think which one? These two are his best. Oh, I didn't read Turner and Perot. I would do that one. Can I grab it?
Starting point is 00:14:04 Yeah, of course Yeah No, thank you. Wait, how many do I grab? I just have the two. Or, I mean you wanted that. Okay, so for the three then it should be that And then if I can have you take a picture of me. I'm sorry. Thank you. Thanks for listening to the Daily Stoke podcast.
