When have you been that?
That person you just can't stand, that person in traffic who won't get out of the way,
that person on the airplane who keeps bumping your seat or whose stuff is spilling in your
area, that person talking loudly on their phone at a restaurant or on the train, ugh,
right?
Don't they realize how annoying they are?
Probably not any more than you did
when you were that person.
And that's what we have to realize
when there is someone who drives us nuts,
that we are that someone to someone else,
or have been at one time or another.
In meditations, one of the things
that Marcus Aurelius reminds himself to think of
whenever someone does him wrong
is all the times that he had acted like that. We were talking on our phone because the call was important
We were driving poorly because we were lost or we just gotten terrible news
We didn't know our jacket had fallen into someone else's space. We didn't mean to push anyone's buttons
Well for the most part all this is true for everyone else, too
So let's give them the grace we give ourselves
and let's try to fix our own behavior
before we judge anyone else too harshly.
