Starting point is 00:00:01 This is Dale Jr. And you're listening to Dirty Moe Radio. The 88 team steals a top 10 at Dover, Mike. Hey, my wife was a steal and I haven't felt bad about it yet. It's a fair point. The Dale Jr. download starts now. 10th. I don't think there's any question about that.
Starting point is 00:00:29 Finishing 10th of Dover yesterday with Mike Davis, with T.J. Majors, with Mike Hoag. We got a full house. I'm Taylor. Zarser. Glad to be here with you on the Dale Jr. download this week. Mike, I'll start with you. I mean, it was. It felt like a steal, but you know what?
Starting point is 00:00:45 I mean, it's a good points day. Some other guys that are in championship contention struggled to get to the finish. They had great cars but didn't get a good finish. Casey, Jimmy, Matt. So in the end, you know, not all in all, not a bad day. And the way I see it is this. If we're running in the top five and we're contending and we blow a motor or we wreck out, the other guys are going to take those points that they get on account of our misfortune.
Starting point is 00:01:08 So I have no problem taking the points that we get. It felt like a steal to get the top 10 because really it felt like, and T.J can chime in here, but it felt like really we were around 13th for most of the day, 12th, you know, a good bit of the day. But, you know, Jimmy gets that late penalty at the end, which was crazy, crazy. And, you know, Truex blows up, Casey Rex, and we end up 10th. T.J. Majors is a spotter for the 88 team and the 7 team that has a huge lead in the championship point. in the nationwide series.
Starting point is 00:01:42 TJ, so what are your emotions after a day like that? When you're looking for speed all day, anywhere you can find it. Like he said, you're running 12th, 13th around there all day, but you finish 10th and you pick up some points. What are the emotions? I just think it was a really hard-fought day. I don't really feel like it was a steel, though.
Starting point is 00:02:00 I think a steel would have been a 6th or a 7th or something because we were, I feel like we were a little bit better than the 2-car, and he finished 5th. I feel like that was a little bit of a steel. Yeah, absolutely. And Junior is sick. You guys are sixth in the points right now. Just a couple points out of fourth. We'll get to Mike Hogue, who's got some funny stories from the weekend coming up here in just a little bit. But let's hear some of the race chatter, Mike. Let's hear when they were in 14th. Lap 252. This is undergreen during a long run. And Jimmy is threatened to put a lap on Dale Jr. Let's hear what they had to say here. I bet that's about 30. Are we turning any better? Are we faster? Yes, I would step.
Starting point is 00:02:44 I said the last few laps of your faster. I'll give you some last to clean air. Just keep hudgeoning. You're doing good. Until we caught the 10, we were 10th off. The guys in front, about the same as the 24. Improvement, but we need about a 10th sport. Obviously, he's trying to find anything you can out there on the track at that point, Mike.
Starting point is 00:03:04 What was weird about that? I believe at the time, that was a long green flag run. I think they'd gone 90 laps under green. And there were only 15 cars on the lead lap, and junior was 15th. And with Jimmy Johnson, the leader, coming behind him. I think he was about a half a straightaway behind him, maybe a full straight.
Starting point is 00:03:19 About a straightaway. Yeah, that was where I remember, the car actually showing its first signs of life where we weren't just maintaining, but it looked like he was gaining on 14th. And I think Jeff Gordon might have been 14th, TJ, or Tony. We were definitely holding our own right there
Starting point is 00:03:34 because I was watching Jimmy pretty hard right there to make sure, you know, to see if he could do anything or what he was doing to be faster us than that time. But I couldn't see anything, and the gap definitely wasn't getting any smaller at that point, you know. Well, and to speak to what T.J. just said that Jimmy wasn't really gaining ground. 27 laps later, Dale Jr. still hasn't been lapped.
Starting point is 00:03:54 He still is held maintaining his position when True X blows the motor to bring out that caution. And let's hear what Steve LaTart and Dale Jr. had to say at that point. Caution is out. Way more competitive there. Way more competitive. How to drive. Right, landing into center. EG on exit But that's not a bad problem Just the tightness is probably the worst
Starting point is 00:04:19 I'm working on the tightness More we turn faster we go I know the exit snobucks so we don't turn I agree Great job buddy You feel a little momentum at that Yeah you feel a little momentum What I meant to say on the last one there
Starting point is 00:04:42 Was he had actually dropped I believe to 18th Now that was when there were You know 18, 19, 20 cars on the lead lap But he had gone back from 18 the 14th and I think when that caution flew which one was that yeah he was in 15th there the last car in the lead lap
Starting point is 00:04:56 so he was actually gaining spots up to that point but TJ they're they're trying to get the car to turn what was what was Stevie talking about when he's was he talking about like there were two problems one is turning in the middle of the corner and also off exit yeah the biggest thing there is you have to get it to turn in the middle
Starting point is 00:05:14 to make you to point it for the exit so you know we were having a really hard time getting it turned in the middle to make your exit good So, you know, we were really working hard on that. And I saw improvements on it. You know, I could see the nose aimed down the track more from where I'm at on the spotter stand there. And I could see it getting better. And so, and they just, you know, they kept chipping away at it and working on it.
Starting point is 00:05:34 But, you know, the main thing there, obviously, we gained three quarters of a lap on the leader. So, I mean, that was a good break for us to get back in contention. Absolutely. All right. So up to 11th, actually, just a few laps later, just more than 30 laps later, Dale Jr. avoids Casey Cain when he spins out. And you had some three-wide racing there for a little while that after Dale Jr. actually got up to eighth for a moment,
Starting point is 00:05:57 he was back to 11th. But let's hear the conversation at lap 317. Five, he's spinning out on top there. He's going to come out, keep coming, keep coming. Come on, come on, come on, clear. I got a plan or something, too. I don't know. It was really loose right there.
Starting point is 00:06:13 10-4. 10-4. We're going to pit right here anyway. This is a window right here. We can make it from here. It was just running pretty good. Them guys put me three wide. I was feeling pretty good there.
Starting point is 00:06:25 But the last couple laps, too, it was getting really loose. I want to know what TJ has to say on this one because this was frustrating to watch. They took two tires, I believe, on this previous pit stop, and it got them up to seventh or eighth. And then in one lap on lap 312, he went from 8th to 12. You remember this, T.J.? Oh, yeah. Yeah, I remember it. You know, we just didn't get a very good restart.
Starting point is 00:06:51 And it's real easy there to get hung up by one car. But this was like after the restart. Like he was running an eighth and holding his own there. And then I think they went three wide. And I don't know who it was. Yeah, it was Harvick and Kyle. That's right. That's right.
Starting point is 00:07:04 It was Harvick and Kyle. Yeah. There's just not a lot of room for air there. You know, it's, you know, we were kind of hanging out at that point. Those guys, you know, were way more aggressive. And it wasn't, you know, a good spot for us to be in. but, you know, I remember it. But it's just real, once you get, once you lose your momentum there a little bit, man,
Starting point is 00:07:23 it's real easy for other cars to get a run on you. Like, that's how, that's how Harvard got a run on us to go three wide. You know, we got racing Kyle a little bit. Here comes Harvard with a big run. So, and then, Harvard gets us both. And then, you know, we go into the corner, you know, almost three wide. So obviously we're not running our fastest corner already. So the next guy behind us already has, you know, you got to be defensive from him already.
Starting point is 00:07:43 Do you know if they were on four tires or two? I'm pretty sure they were on four because they were in front of us before the stop. You got two tracks coming up where you really did well last year. You had the best car in Pocono. Obviously, you had to pit for gas there towards the end, and then absolutely had the best car in Michigan and won the race. So, you know, certainly there has to be confidence about that. One other thing this year that I've noticed is that you guys have done an unbelievable job pitting this year
Starting point is 00:08:11 and making sure you maintain your speed on pit road. Obviously, you had the situation in Texas, but that was a whole different deal altogether. But outside of that, I mean, I can't even think of a penalty you guys have had this year. Yeah, we haven't, we've definitely not hurt ourselves in that area at all. We've been really good. He's been really good on the pit road. We haven't been, we've been getting all we can get without trying to get extra. And he's been, he's been spot on, you know, listening to me calling him in, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:39 Stevie, you know, jumping in when he can. He's been really good doing that. And, yeah, we've got a pretty good deal work. doubt with that now. We've studied a lot of things and seen where he can help and where Stevie can help and I can help and we've made a lot of gains in that area and, you know, I think we've got that down good now. Mike, I don't know about you, but I've got Katie and Grace in the back seat in the neighborhood going 4,700, 4,700, 4,700, 40, all the way to the, all the way to the, all the way to the and then when we get on Independence Boulevard, all right, go ahead.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Well, because then that's where my daughter picks up and she does what the tart does and that's pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit, pit. Okay, well, we obviously think T.J. has done a very good job this year. He's the spotter for the seven team. Everybody's talking about Jimmy Johnson and rightfully so with this 30-point lead that he has in the Cup series. Regan's a, a reagan Smith, 27-point lead, and T.J.'s been a part of that all year in the nationwide deal. So we think T.J.'s done a great job. But Mike, he's got this one detractor, this guy that calls reaction theater.
Starting point is 00:09:39 You know, Hoggs getting destroyed by Dale Jr. and by me and by you and these people, But, you know, everybody has their one detractor. So we all got one. Yeah, we all got one. In some cases, we have several. But he's. Yeah, yeah, hogs got three. Mine's awesome.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Your guy, yeah, your guy is pretty funny. And he called in, of course, let me back up here. Junior got a little chippy. What was that all about? In fact, Dustin, let's play, play some of those clips, the T.J. clips. The T.J. highlights from yesterday. Nice patience, buddy. Nice patience.
Starting point is 00:10:13 59 on the tie. Five, nine. I like you when you tell me I don't have anybody to reach, you do. Ten four. That's helpful. What was that all about? Which one? Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:39 I don't know. Like, I thought you were doing a great job myself. Yeah. Sometimes, you know, whenever they're... TMI. The TMI? Yeah, the TMI. What was the TMI by?
Starting point is 00:10:52 The TMI was normally he likes, and he does change his mind every now and then. Of course. know that doesn't have very much, but trying to paint a picture. He changes his mind every little bit, but normally he likes to know where guys are running if they're catching him in his mirror. And all his idea was tell him what the guy behind him was doing. You know, he went, he'd rolling on the bottom, dripped up, drift up half a car length, and coming back down like it.
Starting point is 00:11:18 And that's all, I just told him about that. And I guess it wasn't, he wasn't in the mood to hear at that point. So, I mean, I'd rather give him the information and know that, you know, him, you know, because 90% of time he's probably going to use it. And I've told him many things and watch him in justice driving. When that happened, Hogue and me and Hogue were thinking the same thing. We're like, we know who's going to be calling Reaction Theater now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:45 And sure enough, he did. Now, I want to play this. This is not, we took this out of Reaction Theater because the call was actually four minutes long. We've edited it down to maybe a minute But this is your in studio He cracks us up I know you get a lot of amusement out of him This is a guy from Florida
Starting point is 00:12:04 And he actually leaves his name for the first time On this one But let's play And so now we have PJ in studio He can actually respond for the first time Here we go He was smart He's supposed to meet him
Starting point is 00:12:31 I still think What do Come on here for I do I do appreciate the fact that he He gives his name there at the end. I want to follow him. What kind of ice cream you eating in Dover yesterday?
Starting point is 00:13:34 Well, I've been on a diet for about three months, man, so I haven't had much ice cream in a while. It was hot enough. You were eating mid-chial chip ice cream yesterday. Not during the race. You didn't have one hand, you know, with mint chocolate chip, just saying, saying door, bumper. Clear?
Starting point is 00:13:49 Yeah. I think I can cut out the clear part because I think he's got it down. You know, normally when I get on a bumper, he's just going to come up anyway. But, yeah, no ice cream yesterday, man. You know, I did get yelled at for giving too much information yesterday. Right. Which one?
Starting point is 00:14:04 Yeah, pick your poison. I don't know what he wants me to do. I'm trying to give him feedback and, you know, some stuff to help him. And I get yelled at. So, sorry. I don't know what you want me to do different. I think he's upset the whole world. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:16 Yeah. You think his name's in all caps? It needs to be if it's not. It's seven exclamation points. That's one of our favorite callers. And so with TJ in studio, we just wanted to play that. Absolutely. That is good stuff.
Starting point is 00:14:30 All right, folks, when we're downloading the races each week, there's only one snack food here at Dirty Mo Radio. It's Dale Jr. potato chips, and you can get them too. It's easy. Go to DaleJR. Foods.com to find a story that carries them or place an order for yourself. That's Dale Jr.com. Dustin, let's go off the grid. Okay, we've got the road manager for Dale Jr.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Mike Hogg in studio with us here this week for a hog story. His name used to be Mike Hogue, but... We changed it. We did. We renamed him. Yeah. Give us a hog story from the... weekend. All right, so we're driving
Starting point is 00:15:07 to the airport this weekend. Myself, Dale Jr., TJ. And Dale's driving. I'm in shotgun. T.J.'s in the backseat. Cruising along, we're coming up to our turn. Look ahead. There's this guy on a motorcycle. He's coming to the stop sign.
Starting point is 00:15:24 He lost control somehow. I don't know if he locked up the front brakes or what. And he wipes out. The bike lands on him. You know, he wasn't, he's probably going 10 miles an hour, but he lost control, a bike fell on his leg. So we come up, we're like, what do we do, man? So we all looked at each other, jumped out of the car, and ran around, and the guy was, it looked like he's in pain.
Starting point is 00:15:44 I thought his leg was broke, the bike was on his leg. So immediately, you're like, hey, man, you're okay, you okay? He was like, yeah, I'm fine, I'm fine. You can tell he's hurting. So we helped him, his shoulder was all road rashed up. And so we helped him lift the bike up, and he looked up, and he noticed it was Dale Jr. And all of a sudden, he was like, oh, man, you know, all of a sudden he's instantly feeling better.
Starting point is 00:16:04 Yeah. He's bleeding on the ground. Oh, it's Junior! It's a miracle. It's like superheroes. Holy Shandale Jr.'s here. Sorry. You just put Dustin to work.
Starting point is 00:16:17 So we picked the bike off of him, and we were like, man, are you sure you're okay? He's like, yeah, yeah, I'm totally good. There's fuel on the ground everywhere. Behind us, there's another guy in a motorcycle who stopped to help. So not only he was, you know, probably thankful somebody was hit there, but then he was like, man, I just wiped out in front of Dale Jr. Yeah. And so, you know, he's like, no, I'm fine.
Starting point is 00:16:35 He never cranked the bike back up, but he was like, but good luck this weekend, man. It was pretty funny. I mean, I'm glad he was okay, glad nobody got hurt. We made sure he was fine, and he said he was good. He got back on the bike, but we took off. So that was an interesting twist. So dudes and pains got fuel laying all over the ground. He just busted his bike, and he's, this is the greatest moment of my life.
Starting point is 00:16:55 That's the, I'm not really sure that's really all what happened. You got more? When the guy laid the bike down, we stopped. me and junior hopped out hoagst they in the car you are full out of the car i jumped over the flames and pulled the guy out i was like i look back and i see junior grabbing like four little puppies out of a back we're looking back and hoag's in the back seat down eating ice cream i was trying to tweet it come on man i'm screaming at him i need info you know kind of like tim wood medic man i had my shirt ripped off ready for a tourniquet if we needed we were we were there
Starting point is 00:17:31 I do have some small burns and stuff left from it. We saved the day. Yeah, and we blew out the flames, and he rode off. Well, that's funny that there was another motorcycle. What are y'all at Bike Week? What is this? It was totally random. I don't know where.
Starting point is 00:17:47 I didn't even see him behind us and all the others. Yeah, I didn't even know either. I saw him. He pulled up and. Hey, if Dale Jr. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You didn't say, I mean, Dale Jr's driving. And you didn't say, you know, we got a motorcycle about.
Starting point is 00:17:59 Go low, go low, go low, go low. Yeah. Two back, one back? I should have, I guess. Door. I could have caution, I guess. Caution's out. Yeah, I think it scared all of us originally.
Starting point is 00:18:10 They're blowing up behind you. Yeah, we can joke about it now, but, I mean, at the time, we don't. Yeah. I got a question, TJ, you can answer this one. If Dale Jr. has a motorcycle and him and Hogue are going to an appearance or something, does Hogue right on the front of the back? Right on the handlebars. The front facing him?
Starting point is 00:18:28 He's in the... The front face. He's in the... That's pretty good. He's in the Robin carriage next to him. There was actually a joke about that. He was going to be Robin because he started right before... Michigan.
Starting point is 00:18:49 We were going to dress him up as Robin. Yeah? That's a good idea. That was a plan. But like Robin from the 70s, right? Like, you know, we're in the underoos. When the three of y'all are running, around is that typically you ride shotgun you're in the back and dale junior drives is that
Starting point is 00:19:04 typically that that is the case that is the case because here's what tj does he takes naps okay he sleeps he sits there he tries to pretend like uh he's up there you know you know paying attention and being man everything but he goes back there and does it off and so what i used to do is that when i noticed that he does off i'd slam on the brakes for a fast go ah yeah and it just scare the crap i do that to him like every week because i normally drive everywhere yeah it's either me or junior driving most of the time and if it's just me and him He gets gazing off and stuff, and I'll slam on the brakes, and he will, I get him probably twice a weekend most of the time. Well, riding with TJ, you want to talk about a guy who's got road rage.
Starting point is 00:19:41 I don't have road rage. It is. I'm just smarter than the rest of them. Oh, okay, yeah. Yeah. When the motorcycle crashed yesterday, you didn't, I mean, because, you know, this guy, Tim, this made you out to be some evil fella. You didn't, Dale Jr. didn't scream at you in the back and say, come on, TJ, I didn't see him. Well, no.
Starting point is 00:20:00 there was a lot of fire. I mean, we're both kind of... Oh, man. That wasn't my fault somehow. Yeah. Somehow that one wasn't my fault. It's Judy Johnson's fault. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Yeah. We'll get to him coming up. All right. But first, we've heard one reaction theater call already directed towards T.J. I'm sure we got some good other ones, Mike. Let's hear him. I'm glad we're happy with the 10th place finish. And the only reason to smoke one because he had a left-side weight advantage.
Starting point is 00:20:30 Oh. Oh. Oh, come on now. Why you got to make fat jokes? That was interesting. I didn't consider that. What were you considering? I was trying to figure out how he picked up all those spots there at the end.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Oh, so you thought that there really was like a weight advantage on the left side? Next. Gas is on the right. Breaks on the left. Mass that dang pedaling. Let's go, Jr. Oh, okay. I like that one.
Starting point is 00:20:57 Noted. Yeah, make sure that gets back to day. That doesn't sound like she was willing to use the gas pedal. I think you should say that to him in Pocono. Hey, Dale. Let me tell you which one the break is, which one in the gas. You should say that. See what happens.
Starting point is 00:21:11 If I was driving, I'd be driving a little bit deeper. That'd be a great idea. Good job, junior finishing 10th on Dover. Hey, just need to do better on them dang restarts. He takes some NHRA lessons from like John Forst. Restarts definitely need to pick up some spots there. That's fair. Jimmy Johnson didn't jump that restart.
Starting point is 00:21:36 Everybody knows it. Everybody saw it. Even the broadcasters. The bus car needs to get a hold of this. That's a good... Actually, what do you think, T.J.? Well, and I watched it. I mean, I've watched all the restarts all day,
Starting point is 00:21:49 and I watched the leaders on the start. So I don't really feel like Jimmy went really early. I just think Juan really outsmarted him is what I think happened. Next. Jay, all, glad you got 10th. You need to get up on the wheel. up in the front and race with them boys. You're right around back there.
Starting point is 00:22:08 You need to get up on race. Again, I think TJ should actually say that to Junior. Next. Please explain to me how the 48 car can be going a lap down, make one adjustment and be up ready to win a race, but no, we make five adjustments and lose five spots. It's ridiculous. If people weren't wrecking in front of us, we wouldn't even know what the top ten is. This is ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:22:33 there's only one person that can really address is that's hog oh me i have no idea how to address what do you do all right jimmy johnson yeah great question you know what you know all about jimmy johnson's one change right no i have no idea what they do what do during that's why i'm wondering i'm a stand and look at tj up at the spotter's he's nice cream eat nice and we were riding a motorcycle next i think that winning is a tough thing to do in NASCAR. I think it proves that Tony Stewart hadn't won in about a year and he's one of the best drivers on the circuit. I think that said that junior and Steve LaTart have been out to lunch for the last month. They haven't been the same since March the 24th.
Starting point is 00:23:22 And you guys continue to make excuses. You continue to go back for your team. And I understand that. But it's got to be better, fellas, you haven't even been close. I mean, listen, everybody's going to, everybody, nobody, if Dale Jr. and Steve LaTartre, we're sitting here right now, they'd say, we want it better. We don't disagree. We want more speed. We want to be better. We want to get back to that. But let's go back to what he said at the very beginning.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Tony Stewart had his first top five yesterday. He won the race, great. But he is first top five yesterday. Everyone goes through these stretches. And you know what? I sure as hell would rather go through it in April. in May, then go through it in October, you know? Yeah, do you think we make excuses?
Starting point is 00:24:06 No, I think we're trying to tell the truth. I mean, look, I mean, yeah, they want more speed. Nobody's happy with the last five or six weeks. They want more speed. But, T.J., moving forward, even though the summer used to kind of stink for Dale Jr. In the 88 team, I mean, Pocono and Michigan are two of his best tracks. Yeah, I don't really know why. I mean, the last two years, it hasn't even been like that.
Starting point is 00:24:29 We took to Ponce Lee in the middle of summer last year. So, I mean, we usually, we go to these tracks, Pocono, Michigan, like you said, and we run good. And honestly, Sonoma's middle of summer, we usually, we're usually running good there into the last lap. You know, we always get spun out or something. But I think the summer months, we're just fine. Yeah. So, I mean, I don't really see a problem with the hot or anything like that. It's just, you know, you just got to be good and everything can go your way.
Starting point is 00:24:56 All right, next. We need to get this car fixed term practice. This compression issue, it sounds like spring and shocks adjustments that need to be done during practice. When we're racing, it should only be fine-tuning, fine adjustments that get the car right. Out of the top ten, don't give me wrong, but we need to get the car near perfect during practice and then perfect during the race. Oh, and by the way, T.J. since you're on here, will you please clear Dale Jr. when he's passing a car? Then clear, clear, clear. Thanks.
Starting point is 00:25:24 You're just not the same. That was a good drive, but it's not quite. Yeah, yeah. He's not all for him. You have the enthusiasm. Sorry, buddy. Yeah, Tim beat you. Although we encourage anybody to call a fuss on T.J. You don't have to meet the standard.
Starting point is 00:25:37 The driver does. Why shouldn't you? Right. T.J. may play him for Dale Jr. during the race. Well, they make a lot of great ringtones. Next. Kyle Bush didn't win. Dale Jr. top 10.
Starting point is 00:25:48 What a great day. There is that. Last one. There is nothing I hate more than seeing that fat piece of a... Tony. Stewart win a race. Kim, Jimmy Johnson is the man he should have went to victory of lane. Good top 10 for Dale Jr.
