Starting point is 00:00:01 This is Dale Jr., and you're listening to Dirty Moe Radio. Dale Jr.'s telling stories and Carter Johnson's describing bank robberies, Mike. Yeah, what could go wrong? The Dale Jr. download starts now. I hope everybody enjoyed their off week from Cup racing. We still had nationwide racing, and we'll talk more about that coming up in just a minute with Dustin Lee and Mike Davis. I am Taylor Zarzer. Glad to be back with you here on the Dale Jr. download.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Just because there wasn't a race doesn't mean we take the week off. never take the week off? Not really, but I mean, I never really, you know, exert my total effort in anything. Right. So, yeah. Unless it was last week when I took the week off. That's right. Look, this was a big off weekend.
Starting point is 00:00:48 I mean, think about what we have coming up. I mean, 17 straight races to close out the NASCAR season. And that is a tall order. That is a huge stretch run. Seven races before the chase begin. So what we have coming up, I hope they got their rest in this weekend. Yeah, our buddy, our buddy, Margie. Smith, a bunch of people have been saying to me at the track, where's Marty?
Starting point is 00:01:09 You know, because he's only been out at like a handful of races this year. Well, now ESPN has the rest of the races, Mike, and Marty's going to all 17 of them. So it gets busy for a lot of people. I hope you enjoyed the beach, Marty. That's right. A couple things, man. Just because there wasn't a race, I want to ask you, what happens on an off week for Dale Jr. And what happens for his team on an off week?
Starting point is 00:01:31 Is it nothing? Did they completely forget about racing for a week? You know, is it like an all-star break in baseball where you go off the grid and you don't think about baseball? What's it like? Well, you don't ever take it completely off. Because there's only two of them. There's only two, right, right. But this weekend, being that there's such a long stretch run here to close the year, a lot of people actually left the country.
Starting point is 00:01:51 I think Lattartre went to Europe. Did I read that Casey Kane is backpacking in Europe or something like that? Jimmy goes over there a lot. Right. Dale Jr. had a wedding to attend. He was actually a part of it yesterday. I was there. And by the way, congratulations, Brandon Suggs and Jill for your wedding.
Starting point is 00:02:05 very nice but he hung around the house he barbecued a lot by the way i've got to say something about that junior text me on thursday and he sends me a picture tailor of of his ribs he had about four or five slabs of ribs on the cooker and he sits there and he texted to me he's like you know check this out and i said oh that's great are those the dreamland ribs that i gave you and he said i'm insulted man i'm insulted you would even say that no i don't i don't do the frozen and ribs. I do it from scratch. And by the way, they stomp ass. I'm just saying, Junior, your ribs, they look great. But Dreamland, man. Yeah, you don't mess. Come on, man. I mean, this is decades of perfection. This was really good stuff, and I'm glad you told that
Starting point is 00:02:51 story. Did you ever answer my question, though? What was your question? Do they do anything related to the 88 on the off week? The team does. Yeah, the team does. but they do take a couple days off and get rejuvenated. I know a lot of people are at the beach this weekend. They're probably, you know, high-fi. Wouldn't that be something if you have the one-off weekend to get away from NASCAR and all the teams and now everybody, they go to the same beach and they just see each other? There's only one snack food here at Dirty Mo Radio, and that's Dale Jr. Potato Chips.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Go to DaleJR. Foods.com to find a store that carries them or place an order for yourself. That's Dale Jr. Foods.com. Oh, Lord, yes. Let's Speed Dial. Tyler, you and I've been looking forward to this for several weeks. Because a few weeks ago on the podcast, we were talking about the Dukes of Hazard. And it reminded us of Carter Johnson. Now, if you don't know who Carter Johnson is, then you might know him by this. The Coonskin hat guy on YouTube who hilariously described a bank robbery scene to a news reporter using Dale Jr.
Starting point is 00:03:58 As his example. So this is what it sounded like in case you didn't remember. Police say Dykes tried to rob the bank wearing a mask and holding a weapon. Once clerks alerted the police, he took off and hit a vehicle as he fled from police. He came in, Dukes a hazard, getting it digging like that, like Dale Jr. And then hooked up and shot forward. And when he hooked up and shot forward, that's when he came and hit. And again, we've laughed so hard at that so many times.
Starting point is 00:04:25 The clip has received hundreds of thousands of views, and it's made Carter somewhat of an internet star, Mike. We were able to track it. Actually, you were able to track him down. and here he is the Coonskin Hat guy from Florida. Welcome to the podcast, Carter Johnson. How are you? Doing good, man, doing good. How about y'all?
Starting point is 00:04:43 We're doing great. I got to ask you, Carter, right off the bat. Do you still have the Coonskin hat? Are you wearing it? I'm not wearing at the moment, but yeah, I do still got it. It's put up on a trophy shelf, man. Put up on the what? On a trophy shelf.
Starting point is 00:04:56 On the trophy shelf. I got you. So do you consider it a trophy? Somewhat, yeah. Now I do. Before he knows, it's just a... just the item to wear, but now it's got its own, what you want to call it? Well, what else is on the trophy shelf?
Starting point is 00:05:13 Oh, man, some things I can't really say on the radio, some trophies, some underdarmament from several different people. It's like a shrine, you know, to my life. This is getting even, right off the bat. I told you. It's getting better and better about a second. Carter brings razzledazzle-dazz. man, I'm telling you.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Nett Carter, I got to ask you. All right, you, we saw the YouTube clip, you know, years ago, and you were explaining to a news guy what you saw in a bank robbery. But what I saw later on another radio clip or another YouTube clip was that you kind of got into it with the reporter off air because he wanted you to put a shirt on and you didn't want to. How did that conversation go? Well, it was kind of like, I had just gotten this new tattoo, man. And it was a tattoo of a Smith & Western bodyguard right there on my waist.
Starting point is 00:06:05 I was so proud of it, and I wanted everybody in the world to see it, you know. So I wanted to have my shirt off, but I guess he, you know, a square, Lamo, didn't want me to have my shirt off. I guess he maybe was jealous of how I looked or something. Of course. He was just more of like a, hey, go put your shirt on it. And I said, hey, you're in my yard. You know, we're in Florida.
Starting point is 00:06:25 I tell you what to do. And he was like, all right, well, if you don't put a shirt on, we're just going to go there and do the, the, interviewer and do the video on across the street. And so I kind of weighed my options there and said, well, either that or that. So I said, okay, I went and put a shirt on. But if you notice, I snuck one in on them. And in the first clip, the first few seconds, I walked across the screen real quick with my shirt off.
Starting point is 00:06:46 There you go. And you did that on purpose, right? Oh, yeah. Yeah. I had to get that tattoo in it. You know it. You know it. Now, the part obviously that really made us interested in doing this interview is during
Starting point is 00:06:59 that interview, you said that you were digging it like. Dale Jr. What exactly is digging it like Dale Jr.? What does that mean? Digging it like Dale Jr., that's just, you know, Pinging Rev, man. Hammer down, eastbound and down, however you want to call it. Okay, I got you. Yeah. On the floor board. Yeah, absolutely. That's it. All right. Can we assume Carter that Dale Jr. is your favorite driver? Oh, yeah, man, for sure. How long have you been a junior fan? I've been a junior fan as long as I've been watching NASCAR and it's a, you know, and it's hard to be a junior fan, but it's better at the same time because you got all this people hating, oh, you ain't one, but you know what?
Starting point is 00:07:41 Rain, shine, snow, whatever, he's out there. It don't matter about it. How he's doing, what he's doing? He's damn racing, you know what I mean? That's it. I'm sorry, I cuss. I don't know if I can do on the way or not. You can say whatever you want.
Starting point is 00:07:52 You can say whatever you want. All right. Don't let my mama hear that. Mom, I'm sorry if you heard me cussing him. You know, tell me a conversation. But when somebody comes up and starts hating on Dale Jr., how do you defend him? I tell him, you know, look at here, bud, either I'm going to kick your ass, or you're going to walk away and you're going to be a junior fan.
Starting point is 00:08:11 I'll put an 88 sticker on you. You know, they all want to run these statistics, all this are here. But whose family is more of a NASCAR is the Earnhardt, man, you know what I mean? Yeah. If you watch that movie, Junior, I think it is, or number three, and it shows how Ralph was running on the dirt tracks, and it shows how the senior came in, and Jr. come in and he was riding a little go-carts in the movie.
Starting point is 00:08:35 You know, he is a sport, man. I love this guy, by the way. I told you you would, man. I mean, this is pretty sporty stuff. Carter Johnson is our guest, Internet, YouTube, sensation. Do you have any tattoos of anything to do with Dale Jr. Earnhardt, et cetera? No, I don't, and I don't want to say that I wouldn't, But I haven't because it just, you know, that time hadn't come yet.
Starting point is 00:09:01 And maybe if a situation come upon where me and Dale together went to a tattoo shop, you know what I mean? I got you. Okay, well, that's obviously what we need to work on. Let's say juniors in town for the weekend that he comes your way and wants to hang out. How would you show him a good time? Well, we probably start off by going out to one of the local classy establishments. Have a few drinks.
Starting point is 00:09:28 Get somebody to eat, something like that. Go out to the gun range. I got my own shooting range. We go out there, pop some rounds off. Probably go out to the beach, maybe go out to my hunting property, put something down the dirt. We might even go on a local little practice tracks around here and see what, you know, let me show him what I can do.
Starting point is 00:09:46 Wow. I like that. Can you drive? I can drive. You can hold your own? Now, let's say you were in a race against the guy that was leaving the bank robbery scene. you know, who would I put my money on? You were the guy that was robbing the bank.
Starting point is 00:10:00 You put my money on me, man, because first off, I'd be in the Chevy. Second off, I wouldn't have taken the turn like he did, and he is a friend of mine, as a matter of fact, and I did not know that until after the whole doing happens. Wait, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up. Wait, you knew the guy that robbed the bank? Yeah, I know Matt. He's a good friend of mine.
Starting point is 00:10:23 He's a good. I know, Matt. Everybody makes mistakes. Thanks, man. And I'm going to speak well about Matt. He's a good guy. He's a good character, stand-up guy. You know, what happened that day had transpired how it did.
Starting point is 00:10:33 He's changed man. He's been corrected, and I guarantee you he's a fine man. What's he doing now? He's in Clearwater. He's just doing him. He's getting back, you know, the right way of living. And he's just living life, man. I mean, I'm sure he had to serve some time, right?
Starting point is 00:10:52 Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Well, good for Matt. Yeah. We now can identify the bank robber. Yeah, I had no idea. But we love good rehabilitation stories. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:11:03 He is a changed man, though. I can guarantee you that he's a good man. What else do we need to know about you, Carter? I mean, the world, this YouTube clip got more than 200,000 clips. And it was always just because you were wearing a Coonskin hat and talking about Dale Jr. What does the world need to know about Carter Johnson? Man, I guess they just need to know that. I'm real, you know.
Starting point is 00:11:27 I'm not some kind of character made up in my head or anybody else's head. This is not an act. I don't try to portray anything. I just do as I want to do and live how I want to live. Hopefully, you know, it's the right way. I'm a God-fearing man. And at the same time, I'm not fearful of doing what I've got to do to get something done. I hear you.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Carter, if we were to send you to one, to watch a race, where'd you want to go? I'd want to go to Daytona. Yeah. I'd flip the coins. Well, he's already asked. Yeah. He already asked?
Starting point is 00:12:04 Oh, yeah. Trust me. That was probably like, what, the third thing I asked you? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, here's the story. As soon as we said on the podcast that we wanted to find Carter Johnson,
Starting point is 00:12:15 people started coming out of every, you know, from just everywhere saying, well, here's his Facebook page, here's his email, here's his stuff. So when I contacted him, he was more. than willing to do this interview with us, but then he followed up. He was like, hey, I want to go to Daytona. This was before the Daytona race, obviously. So I said, well, let's get the interview in first, right? You messed up and told me that Dale was in Florida, and I wanted his hotel.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Remember that? I said, where's he staying at, man? Come on, come on. Yeah, I don't typically give that out to people. I found that out, man. I found that out. You mean you weren't compelled to say, you know what? Carter, I know Dale Jr. wants to see it.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Carter, go up to this number and do the secret knock. Get one of those little push cards, yeah? room cleaning. Yeah, but wear your coonskin hat, Carter. It'll look completely normal. Last thing for you, Carter, there is a 100% chance. Adele Jr. is going to hear this interview. So is there anything you'd like to say directly to Jr. before we're done?
Starting point is 00:13:11 Yeah, I'd just like to tell him thank you for staying in the sport. Thank you for keeping it real. And if you're ever, ever, ever around Panama City, Florida, come look me up, man. Let's go have a good time. All right, very good. Anybody you'd like to give a shout out to before we're done? Yeah, yeah. I'd like to give a shout out to my boy, Caveman.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Of course. A friend of mine, Rebel, and to my mom and dad. Hey, Mama, hey, Daddy. That's it. Okay, who are Caveman and Rebel? They're just close friends of mine. They're good people. And, you know, they're like me.
Starting point is 00:13:47 They keep it real. And they're 100%. Does everybody have a nickname around there? Yeah, yeah, sort of. So what is your nickname? Come on, man. I'll give you two guesses. I think I can name it in one.
Starting point is 00:14:02 Coonskin. Coonskin. Is that it? That's it. I knew it. All right, Coonskin. Tell Cave Man and Rebel, what's up? And we'll catch you down the line.
Starting point is 00:14:12 Thank you so much. Yes, sir. I appreciate y'all. Mike, I'd like to thank you. I'd like to thank you because I have interviewed Peyton Manning, Michael Jordan I mean you name it I mean I've named somebody in sports
Starting point is 00:14:28 you know because of my job I have interviewed them yes you have that was the greatest interview of my life it was the best interview I've ever done they've ever been part of Taylor I just I've got to show you our text conversation when I first found Carter maybe we'll do that for another episode
Starting point is 00:14:44 we'll just we'll do a dramatic reading of the text message between Carter Johnson myself when I introduced myself and he in his response to that It was classic. That's when I knew we got to have him on the podcast. Seriously. That is truly one of the best things I've ever been part of.
Starting point is 00:14:59 He was upset, Taylor, that they didn't let him wear a shirt because he wanted to show off his new Smith and Weston tattoo. I was a little upset that I wasn't part of your interview last week with Junior, but I feel a lot better now. Good. Totally better. In fact, you introduced a new segment last week where Dale Jr., T.J. Majors and yourself went through old personal photo albums and shared memories and behind-the-scenes stories from those pictures. And the coolest part is you are posting these photos on Dale Jr.com on the media gallery so fans can see the photos that Dale Jr. is talking about. In fact, Jr. behind the stage before he got announced in Loudon said, are we going to put these things on the website? Said that to me.
Starting point is 00:15:38 I said, I don't know. You got to talk to Mike Davis. But clearly he did. And you're putting them up at dale junior.com. So what did you guys come across this week? Well, we went back into my 2004 photo album and found a couple of good ones, Taylor. One of them is Dale Jr. with a black eye. And another is Junior in a night costume giving me the finger.
Starting point is 00:15:56 Like you said, you can view these photos right now at Dell Jr.com. The gallery is labeled the Dell Jr. download episode 23. So check those out. And here's Dale Jr., T.J. Majors and myself talking about him. We have stumbled upon a photo of Dale Jr. wearing a helmet. And he looks to have a little bit of a shiner in his right eye. Do you remember this? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:21 And this is one of those days when you talked back to me. I wanted you to do an interview. you and I just popped you because it's just, you know. I'm surprised that there's any photos of the evidence of the black eye because we did a pretty, I did a pretty good job of wearing sunglasses pretty much all at all times. You can't wear them in your helmet. Hard to put those sunglasses under a helmet. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:42 I'm surprised you got the visor up, though. That was just the week after my 30th birthday party. And the 30th birthday party was a pretty good one and it lasted on into the wee hours of the next morning. And where I ended up was in a boxing ring with Arturo Gotti, a professional boxer, Ross Coleman. Yeah. Bull rider. Bull rider.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Rob Coleman champion bull rider. Brad, the lead singer from Three Doors Down. And I believe that might have been it. Now, this is the 30th birthday, this is the birthday party that Ludacris came to, but I don't know that he made it over to the box. He came to the party for a few hours. Yeah. He came to the party party party. the after party.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Right. So anyways, we're in this boxing ring at like seven in the morning. Everybody's been in the sauce all night. And we at first it started off, hey, Arturo, show me how to throw punches faster because I wanted to learn how to throw three, like a combination really quick. Because I boxed with Josh at the time. We'd play around. I wanted to surprise.
Starting point is 00:17:46 I wanted to surprise my buddy Josh the next time we fought. With a combo. Yeah, with a quick combo. He'd be like, whoa. and so it started off like that and it escalated into okay we're all going to do one you know three one round or yeah three one round matches and uh i ended up in the ring with ross coleman yeah coleman and we had we were i thought i was hitting him pretty good he was definitely hitting me pretty good and then uh you know we were farting around uh in between punches and i noticed just
Starting point is 00:18:23 big shadow sort of lurking over my head. Like somebody was looking over my shoulder. And I couldn't figure out what it was. I couldn't escape it. And I went over to the mirror and my, like, my eyebrow, my brow over that eye right there, over my right eye, I guess, was swollen, like, giant. And I was like, holy cow, how am I going to explain this? Here's what people need to know about Ross Coleman.
Starting point is 00:18:49 He may be one of the craziest. people alive, at least at the time. When he was, he's retired from bull riding, I guess, but at the time, I mean, this guy didn't know how to put the brakes on. He did no brakes. And he was a lot of fun. He was with Anheiser Bush as one of their pro bull riders. And so we got to do a lot of things with him.
Starting point is 00:19:11 As a matter of fact, I remember my first Ross Coleman experience, and it was at Talladega, and it was my first year, 2004. And all I know is that Dale Jr.'s pulling his car out of the garage to go start practice. and there's this cowboy who has stopped the entire traffic line because he's sitting there talking to Dale Jr. Through the window, you know, not in the garage stall, but like exiting onto the track. And I guess you saw him. I, of course, don't know who he is. And I'm like, what's with the cowboy down there?
Starting point is 00:19:40 I'm on top of the haul. I'm like, the cowboy just stopped traffic over there. And Dale Jr.'s too. It's this crazy fan. He's trying to get an autograph. Somebody's got to go stop him. And they're like, no, that's just his bull riding buddy. And so that's when I realized, Ross Coleman don't give a damn about it.
Starting point is 00:19:53 about anything. And boy, that was just a beginning of it. But anyway, so yeah, that was, I believe, at Kansas, the picture of the black eye. I think that's where y'all went the next week. So his right eye swells up first. If you were getting a boxing match with him. Yep. After the right. That's his weak spot. All right. What do we got here? Here's a, that was the burn press conference up in Loudon. I don't remember that. Everybody looks happy. Look at you all wrapped up. God, I was in pain. Was that, did that hurt? Hell yes. That old fire thing hurt? Yeah. And that's true. had he ever even been in a cup car?
Starting point is 00:20:25 I don't think he had. All right, here we go. See, this is a picture that you showed me the other day where I was filming a commercial for Sprint, I believe. No, Fox. Fox. I think it was of the Daytona 500 previews. To promote their coverage of the race.
Starting point is 00:20:42 And all right, so I don't, I mean, I thought it was, I'm flipping you off in this picture and I'm dressed up as a night. And you're not happy either, by the way. Yeah, it was miserably hot. Yeah. So, yeah, I remember that. because we were there all day.
Starting point is 00:20:55 This is in Atlanta, and we had actually had something to do on the track, I think, that morning. And then we go into downtown Atlanta and shoot this commercial all day. I would have never let y'all do that now. It looks like a game of thrones, man. I don't know why we would have done that. Working the hell out of me. That was. We would never dream about that now, would we?
Starting point is 00:21:13 But, hell, what were you thinking? We were all about some Daytona 500, I guess. But you were a night and you're sitting on this wood plank. It looks like a seesaw. Yeah, it was a big seesaw. And it's in front of a green screen. You're not happy. That's like an hour eight, so I actually give you credit for that.
Starting point is 00:21:27 And that does, that costume looks heavy. Commercial is cool. This is one of the many photos of you flipping me a bird, though. I know that. What else we got? This is the Daytona 500. Let's talk about this right here. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:21:44 Damn. I never knew you could have that much hair. I mean, I've never even seen, like even in your wild and crazy teenage days. I've never even seen. this is like chia pet. This is something that you put fertilizer on that thing. This is, I think, a Budweiser photo shoot. You know what?
Starting point is 00:21:59 The hair is so remarkable that we can't even start talking about the black shirt. That's what I was going to say. It looks like you just left the prom with your ruffles. God. Looks like something John Travolta wore. Yet again that we would never do these days, right? But there's actually two photos of this. That might be the most hair I've ever seen you have.
Starting point is 00:22:18 That's terrible. Yeah. And I think that was even in a catalog. One of the Budweiser. I look like a, like a, not even the star of this porn, but like a, I'm like the supporting actor in a porn. That's what that looks like. It looks like your face has been put in one of them apps where you put hair like you did on me. That's the exact haircut you put on me.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Only yours is real. That's a good one though. All right. We will have more of that. that conversation between Dale Jr., T.J. and Mike, in weeks to come. Looking forward to that very much. Let's throw the white flag. There you go, buddy, white flag.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Not sure if you saw this, Dustin, but Dirtymoe Radio became an official sponsor of Regan Smith's number seven Chevrolet. Really? Yeah, man. Check out last Thursday's JRM 360 at JRM Racing.com for details. I think we've got really good placement on the car, by the way. You can determine that for yourself on 360. Starting point is 00:23:28 and then on Thursday he's going on a media tour in New York. Now follow our good friend Laura Scott from Hendrick Motorsports on Twitter for details. She is at Hendrick 88. Quite a points battle brewing in the nationwide series. Sunday's Brickyard 400 will Mark ESPN's first cup telecast of the year, so we're looking forward to that. Lots of good pre-race coverage to look forward to. And then the brickyard 400 is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
Starting point is 00:24:13 By the way, if you're going to be there on Sunday, Dale Jr. will appear live on the Chevy stage for a Q&A session at 10.30 a.m. Get there early because that place is always packed, and that is it. All right. Next week, we recap the brickyard for coonskin, for Dustin, for Mike, for Dale Jr., for T.J. I'm Taylor Zarzer. You've been listening to the Dale Jr. download.
