Starting point is 00:00:01 This is Dale Jr., and you're listening to Dirty Moe Radio. How are the way to finish up the year, man? Top 5 of points, but way to go. Another top 10, too. What you said, that was a little bit of a record for you. Yeah, y'all did it, man. The Dale Jr. download starts now. Hey, fans, this Delin Hart Jr.
Starting point is 00:00:25 Just got done running the race here at Homestead. Came up a little short. Thought we had the car to win. It's been an awesome season, and especially the chase. We really turned it on, and I feel like that, you know, we show what we're capable of next year. a year we do it. So I want to thank you guys for tuning in to Dirty Moe Radio.
Starting point is 00:00:43 We've enjoyed doing it all year. I hope you guys have. And we'll see you in Vegas at the championship banquet. With Dustin Lee and Mike Davis, I am Taylor Zarser, and this is the final Dale Jr. download of 2013. Dale Earnart Jr. finishes third at Homestead. He finishes the season, fifth and points. He and his team had a piece.
Starting point is 00:01:07 Those last nine races, they finished the season with 22 top tens, started the season on fire, finished the season on fire. They also finished the year with 10 top five. So there's a whole lot of positives to talk about. And then there's the giant goose egg of not winning a race. And I know that that really stung Dale Jr. And the entire 88 team and all of his fans too because they were right there so many times each and every week, Mike. Yeah, I mean, that's the one thing that keeps this overall body of work. When you look at the overall body of work, what they did, this really was Junior's best season.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Yeah. If they could have only had that win, that would have made it as best. I don't think you can call it his best season if you are winless. Right. But the overall body of work was very impressive. And this chase, I can't stop talking about how good they were in this chase. I was so impressed by them. I'm proud of them.
Starting point is 00:02:03 So, you know what? Even without the W, I'm feeling good. about this team. You should be. I mean, I think you're right. I don't think you can call it your best year when you don't win a race. But you absolutely can call it their most consistent year. But yesterday, Mike, there was no question in my mind. The 88, I mean, this is my opinion. Yeah. The 88 had the best car yesterday on a long green flag run. Nobody could touch them. They were a rocket ship. And with 20 laps to go, his car, he couldn't get the car dialed in real well off of restarts. And you saw that, especially on the last restart. Although his restart,
Starting point is 00:02:37 were good. No, his restarts were good. But a few laps in, you know, Kenseth and Hamlin had better cars. But after a few laps in, it was like he hit a button or something. Yeah, yeah. Or the nitrous oxide, you know, took effect. I mean, with 20 laps to go, that guy, he almost took half of Kinz's car out, you know, trying to get past him.
Starting point is 00:02:57 And look, Matt Kenseth is the best blocker, I think, in NASCAR. I really believe that. Jimmy Johnson's one of the greatest drivers of all time. We'll talk about that in a minute. But Matt Kenseth is the best blocker. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, is that a compliment, or is that a, what is that? No, I think it is a compliment. I mean, yeah, I think it is a compliment.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I mean, Casey Kane had the best car in Bristol and Matt Kinseth won the race. Dale Earnardt Jr. had the best car in Homestead, and Matt Kinseth blocked him from getting even to second place. He's a great blocker. No, that's a compliment. I can't say I enjoy watching it, but he is. He's a great blocker. Maybe he's, you know, he's Charles Barkley. He boxes out.
Starting point is 00:03:36 And especially when his buddy is trying to pass him, and they're yelling at each other. And Kinzeth is F-bombing him out there as he should have been, too, because Junior, listen, Junior was about to put him in the fence. What about Hamlin? Both Hamlin and Kenseth should have gone to Junior and said, thank you for not taking me out. Yeah. Because Junior really had to slam on his brakes to avoid wrecking Denny Hamlin. It's really frustrating, though, when you know, when everyone in the free world watching the race knows,
Starting point is 00:04:06 that the 88 has the best car, and it finishes third. But he tried everything he could do. It certainly wasn't due to a lack of effort. No. And Mike, I'll give you more of my thoughts on Dale Jr.'s future here in just a moment. JJ wins a championship again. It's unbelievable what this guy has done, six championships in 12 years for Jimmy Johnson. Is he the best of all time?
Starting point is 00:04:29 Do you want my honest answer? I want your honest answer. My honest answer. They were talking about it yesterday. Let's see it. What's the name of this download? The Dale Jr. download? The Dale Jr. Download.
Starting point is 00:04:37 He's Dale Earnhardt's son? Yes. Can I really give my honest answer on this podcast? Give your honest answer. He is. He's the greatest driver ever. I think that I love Dale Earnhardt, okay? I did.
Starting point is 00:04:49 And I love Richard Petty. I love what these guys meant to the sport. And yes, I'm 36 years, almost 36 years old. So, yeah, I can't really speak to Richard Petty's era and 200 wins and all that. So I have to say I'm somewhat ignorant to what he accomplished. I'm not trying to suggest he's not one of the greatest of all time, but I think winning six championships in 12 years in this day and age, everybody talks about how there's so much parity
Starting point is 00:05:18 and the cars are all the same and it's so hard to pass. I'm amazed at what this guy has done. But, yeah, I think he's the greatest ever. You don't, do you? I don't think he is, but I think he will be. I don't think there's anything that's going to stop him from it. I don't think you can be the best ever until you have the number to either match or beat the what is the other pinnacles of the sport. But I think he's going to be.
Starting point is 00:05:44 I think it's inevitable. I mean, he's that good. And so I think that he's well on his way to be the greatest of all times. I think that's a fair answer. I mean, if that's the way you want to look at it, then, yeah, then Dale Earnhardt, I think, is still the best today. No, again, no. No, no. No disrespect to Richard Petty.
Starting point is 00:06:00 But the seven that Dale Earnhardt won, to me, are more impressive than that. the seven that Richard Petty won. Right. So if we're going by that logic, which I understand, then Dale Earnhardt deserves to still be number one. I mean, Jack Nicholas still deserves to be number one in majors, you know, until Tiger passes him. I'm more blown away by Tiger's talent than am by Jack Nicholas.
Starting point is 00:06:19 I'm more blown away by Jimmy Johnson's talent than anybody else's. Yeah, that's fair. All right. I think, hey, nobody can say we were not honest here on the Dale Jr. download. We got so many reaction theater calls coming up. And we'll also hear Kenseth and Jr. in their post-race discussion in just a moment. But first, let's hear some race chatter.
Starting point is 00:06:37 This is when Junior was flying to the lead. He went from eight to first and 45 laps. It was, holy cow, it was glory, glory, hallelujah, watching this guy out there on the track. Yes, it was. On lap 139. Let's listen. It was awesome watching that.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Yeah, it really was. I mean, it was awesome watching that. And then they made the pit stop, and then they came out and they were still leading, just so you know. Yeah, they did. And again, it was, It's amazing to watch when they have the best car on the track.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I just, for all the morons out there that say, Dale Jr. can't drive. You're just not watching the races then. You're ignorant and you want to believe it without watching. That man's a wheelman. What about the three wide pass for the lead? You and I were on the phone when that happened, and it was ridiculous. What about that?
Starting point is 00:08:02 Dale Jarrett comes back on the air and he's having to pour cold water all over himself. He's like, did y'all just see that down there? It's unbelievable. It was awesome. It was awesome. Let's go to the final pit stop here. The 88 team makes its final pit stop on lap 237, entered the pits in first but came out second to Denny Hamlin. Here we go.
Starting point is 00:08:29 Time line down there. 28. And you had to feel confident at that point. You did on a long green flag run that Junior was going to get to the front. And before we hear the final battle here, a couple of things. Paul Menard's tire blowing up was one of the craziest things I've ever seen. How did nobody get hurt? There were four or five guys all around that wheel.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Did you hear Slugger Labby, crew chief from Menard? Y'all's a asses need to put out that fire! Yeah. I mean, he was right. That is more hard-ass than even Tony Urey Sr. could ever be, I think. That was awesome. There was an explosion on pit road. Put out the damn fire!
Starting point is 00:09:23 Oh, goodness. I loved it. That was hilarious to hear over the national television feed on ESPN yesterday. A couple other things. about this last run is I loved Steve LaTart saying, no bull bleep, we're going for this thing. This is it. We're going for this thing.
Starting point is 00:09:44 It's real. And LaTart was challenging Jr. As much as I have heard him before. And Junior is screaming back. I am trying. I am trying. I'm giving it everything I had. And he did.
Starting point is 00:09:53 And there were times where after he gave up two spots in that long green flag run at the end, Mike, or he said, this thing ain't over. Dale Jr. was saying that. And he did. He put everything he had. into it. And I understand the disappointment, but it certainly wasn't due to a lack of effort. Let's hear the crazy good racing he had against his buddy Matt Kinzeth here in the final clip.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Got out close, man. Get him to have 10 to go. We're on your side there. On your side there. Clear on, clear up, clear up, clear up, clear up. Looking outside, outside. Out of a 20 car. He's very good on the top. If you get a run to him, maybe if you run the middle and drive him to the top, we'll have a chance.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Put on a show. Let's do it. For the points don't matter here. Two to go. Two to go. Two to go. Two to go. Nice and smooth. Bring her home for it.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Two to go. And again, they finish. Third there, it was disappointing because, again, at the end, Mike, you just felt like, gosh, if he can get by that 20, Hamlin's got no chance. Yeah, what Dale Jr. said at the end was that, you know, they strategically and smartly took away Dale Jr.'s top line. Nobody could touch Dale Jr.
Starting point is 00:11:22 when he was up there rim riding at the top. He had more speed than everybody. But he couldn't make the pass low. He could not do that. He couldn't take a middle line, and he couldn't take a low line. And when you took away that top line smartly, to Kenseth's credit, he was able to pass him.
Starting point is 00:11:38 He was never able to clear him to the point where Kenseth didn't get momentum, getting him back. And that's what we just heard. It is what we just heard. And that's what I was talking about. He's just an incredible blocker. And that is a compliment. You said rim riding at the top.
Starting point is 00:11:51 I don't think that does it justice. If people, again, want to scrutinize Dale Jr. as a driver, please get footage of this entire. race and how close to the wall this man was the entire race. Do you understand the extraordinary level of skill that requires? Anybody that wants to scrutinize that needs to go try it. And I would, I want to see one lap. Going 70 miles an hour.
Starting point is 00:12:17 One lap. I guarantee you 100% of anybody that tries it does not come back with a car. Go out on the interstate and try to keep your line without moving the wheels at all for just half mile. Oh, and don't forget, he was loose. He did that with a loose race car. It's truly amazing. Do you comprehend what that actually means? That means the back end of his car was sliding out, and he was up against the wall. And a bunch of you out there wanted him to wreck Kenseth, and I'm sure we'll hear from you here in just a moment. Now, again, I know we'll talk about this further, but if you wreck Kenseth, then you have another, you know, caution, and that's trouble because
Starting point is 00:12:55 junior on cold tires wasn't nearly as good. But the level of skill it requires not to wreck Kenzith during that whole time was amazing as well. It is. Okay, we're going to play all of Dale Jr.'s post-race reaction as he shared the podium with Matt Kenseth. It led to some very insightful comments from both of them. First, let's talk about what's going to get you through the offseason. That's right, Taylor.
Starting point is 00:13:15 It's Dale Jr. Potato Chips. Go to Dale Jr. Foods.com. Dale J.R. Foods.com to order your bags today or find out where you can buy them. You can do it all at Dale Jr. Foods.com. Oh, man. It's fun. Great scriptwriters. Copywriters are we got here.
Starting point is 00:13:31 on dirty moe radio okay let's hear from junior and kinseth we've actually been really good every week since you know the chase started i think we were pretty i can't remember but i think we were pretty good at chicago when we blew to motor but really you know we came here and tested uh really liked how that worked out and um worked on the car real hard saturday worked on it you know real smart and felt like that we had a car that was going to come to us and it surely did we weren't that great at the start of the race but as the race wore on the thing really come to life and we're just real happy to run as well as we have this season this has been one of the best years I've had certainly the best year I've had working with Hendrick and you know
Starting point is 00:14:20 just want to you know give my team a lot of credit and Steve Lattard and my engineers do just an amazing job providing good cars every week and And we're really jailing. Every year we've gotten better, and this is really been a blast. And open next year, we just continue that trend and that trajectory and get a shot at trying to win a championship. I think we can do it. Had a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Racing Dale Jr. It reminded me a little bit of the nationwide series days. We used to race together, like he said, he wishes it was for the win. I do too, but I'm not sure what would have happened. It was for the win. But, yeah, that was a lot of fun. It's always fun to race somebody that you like and also that you can trust. You can race hard with back and forth and kind of know what to expect.
Starting point is 00:15:07 So it was a really fun night. Obviously, both of us sitting here wanting to come up with a win. And, you know, if Jimmy would have got a flat or something, that would have been okay there at the end, too. But I'd like to know now that it's over, is it relief that you guys can get some time off and away from family? Or is it kind of bittersweet because both of you are having, you know, we're having great seasons. and you know sometimes you you kind of lose that momentum in the off season yeah the off season is so short it's really just a formality these years but uh i you know i haven't ever since i started working with steve and that whole team i haven't wanted any of the years to end you know we seem to get better as the season goes
Starting point is 00:15:48 and and you just would love to go to another race next week for the last nine weeks do you look back at that engine in chicago and go man what if no i don't really because i don't know how you know that I don't know that that would have made a big difference and probably wouldn't have made a big difference. So we didn't win enough races in the regular season. We didn't win any. And that was the difference. So when we started to chase, we were already in the hole a little bit to Matt.
Starting point is 00:16:13 And you can't, you know, it's too competitive. It's, you know, just like the end of this race. You know, the reason why I couldn't get back Matt because he's running second. You know, the guy in second and the guy in first, they're not going to be easy to pass. You know, we just got behind. in the regular season not winning enough,
Starting point is 00:16:30 not doing enough to get bonus points, and those guys did. And that really gives them, those points are so important. And, you know, if you put a good 10 races together and add them bonus points on top of it, man, you're going to be hard to beat. Dale, you touched on it earlier and talked about how good your cars have been in the chase.
Starting point is 00:16:48 It seems like they have really improved over the past 10 or 12 races. Can you put your finger on one thing that you have found, that your team has found, to make them better? Yeah, I've asked Steve over and over, and asked my car chief Jason Bredet over and over and asked everybody on the team at least once or twice
Starting point is 00:17:08 what we're doing different, and they said they're not doing anything different. So I have the same feeling. Like our cars are way faster, and we have been more competitive. I think not as a company, I just think the ADA team has really stepped it up. But each year, like I said, we've gotten better. And as a year we've went, we've gotten better. When we first started working together, it's easy to forget about all this. But when me and Steve Farton started working together, we were, you know,
Starting point is 00:17:42 working our guts out to finish in the top 10. And each year it's kind of gotten easier to run a little better. Okay. Enjoyed hearing that there after the race from Kenseth and Jr. You can tell those guys are like brothers, you know, I mean, that they're going to try to do anything they can. hand to beat each other, but the level of respect and appreciation they have for each other. They're going to steal each other's beer off planes, as you heard earlier this year.
Starting point is 00:18:06 If there was ever a time to go steal his beer again, I think last night was it. All right. Reaction theater time. Let's hear what you guys have to think about the end of the season. Son up. Yep, that sums it up right there. Okay, all right. That's a good way to start it.
Starting point is 00:18:26 Was that you? That was me. Actually, that was my kids. No. Next. Good season. See you guys in Detroit. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:43 That also was me, too. Yeah. Did you just call every time? I did. My 8-year-old daughter in the last 20 laps said, I can't take this. It's too stressful. I'm going to read a book. My 7-year-old daughter said, Daddy, you are not thinking positively.
Starting point is 00:18:55 You've got to start thinking positive thoughts. And I'm breaking things and beating, yeah. That was what was happening in my house. What did your wife said? She was out. She couldn't take it. So she went to the grocery store. That's the Zarsher household.
Starting point is 00:19:08 Yep. Next. That moor. That moor. Matt Kenseth. He f***ed this early in the year at the Glen. He f***ed this again. I know that him,
Starting point is 00:19:18 Jr., are two guys that are normally respected for, you know, if you got a faster car, you're in the middle of race. They're going to move over for you or whatever. They're going to race you clean. I just wish that Junior turned him because he's such a fuck. I don't think there's any question that Junior probably thought at times, man, I'm going to punt this bleep-de-bleep off of the track.
Starting point is 00:19:40 But then he also thought, man, I want to win this race. if I pun him off of the track, I might mess my car up. I might cause a caution. You know, you will cause a caution. And that lessens my chance of winning. I have to find a way to get by him, and that's my best way to win. Is that the record for most bleeps in one call? I thought it was great.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Listen, that's got to be a record. I thought it was a beautiful call. Next. Oh, my God. Had another freaking winning car. Ben Kenneth ordered to break my foot off in your ass. I'm going to hold up the fastest car out there. I know the win that Junior should have.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Oh, my God. I just want to punch him. I would stay out of Morrisville in Orcanapolis for the next few days if I was Matt Kinsen. I'm detecting a theme here. Next. Hey, great race, junior. I hope you remember that that two-faced sum of Bikinsen race you this tonight and race him the exact same way all next year and put his ass in the wall next time.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Thanks. Why not pay him back at Daytona? Dona. God, Laurel. Yeah, pay him back at Daytona. There you go. Pay him and everybody else. Yeah, just calls a 40-car pile-up.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Yeah. That's for you, Kinseth. Yeah. Next. I'm not asking you to be the intimidating, but feel free to put your bumper to a guy who is holding you up when you've got the fastest car on the track. What do you think?
Starting point is 00:21:07 So far, the Russian has the most reasonable common sense, level-headed calls. also part. Yep. Next. Sitting in traffic leaving homestead, and I couldn't be prouder of Dale Jr. He had a hell of a year, even without a victory. So all I can say is bring on Daytona, Dale yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:29 Yeah. It's amazing, you know, I think that, gosh, almost every single year I'm excited about seeing the finish of the season, but I'm also ready for a break. This year, I don't want a break. I mean, I really wish. I wish that they're racing coming up this weekend. I truly do. I don't want any offseason this year because of their performance each week.
Starting point is 00:21:51 I want an off season. You do? Yeah. I don't. By the way, a shout out to anybody that is at the racetrack and leaves the track, gets in their car, and calls. Dirty-moor radio. Next.
Starting point is 00:22:02 All I got to say about this, punk-ass, Matt Kansas. I know he was sitting there trying to come back and win the championship, but get you slow ass out of the way and let the boy go by. so he can win the damn race. I know you're trying to win a championship. Yeah. Well, but at that point, he was not trying to win a championship. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:22:21 That's actually a good point. I was going to say this, because a lot of people felt that way. Like, hey, dude, all right, you're not going to win a championship. Yeah. But what if something happens to Jimmy, you know, what if he blows a tire? What happens then?
Starting point is 00:22:33 Does it not put Kenseth right back in the middle? Because there was a lot of cars on the lead lap. There were a lot of cars. There were more than 24 in the lead lap. Well, if he blows the tire second or third, ain't going to matter if he blows the tire. It's not. The second or third, he would have.
Starting point is 00:22:47 I guess my only point is. He would have finished 34th or something. I guess my only point is that Matt Kenseth can't in his head say, okay, well, now I'm not racing for a championship because you don't know something that may happen. It happened to Jimmy this year. Well, you can go do your Kenseth download while. Oh, gosh, here we go. Next.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Here we go. First and foremost, congratulations to Jimmy Johnson of that whole 48 team. Well-deserved championship. I'm not like most junior fans. I've got no problem. Jimmy Johnson on what he's been able to accomplish in his career. As far as Bill Jr's concerned, big ups on a great 2013, and wish that could have ended with the 4888 shop,
Starting point is 00:23:23 just having an outright party. But enjoyed the year, no matter what, can't wait for 2014. I know things are going to be even better. Good luck, guys. Yeah, Jimmy said that after the race, too. He was really hoping Junior would win it because that's what everybody wanted at the 4888 shop.
Starting point is 00:23:37 And Jimmy even mentioned after the race that, That was absolutely the plan. Sure, he wants to win every race, but he knew the 88 had the best car out there, and that would have made for the perfect day. Next. Those talking heads just claimed that the performer of the race was Jimmy Johnson. I beg to freaking differ. To go from 21st to third to leading laps,
Starting point is 00:24:07 that is a performer of the race. won't disagree with that and I don't know exactly what he's talking about because was it the broadcat was it the I don't know either I didn't know they gave a performer the race but if they did and they gave it to Jimmy Johnson that wouldn't make any sense Junior certainly outperformed Jimmy in that one race he did I mean I you know I know Hamlin started up closer to front but given the hellacious season that guy had
Starting point is 00:24:32 you know I could understand if they gave it to him too for winning after after all that's happened with him next damn junior just Damn, I heard it. I heard in your voice that I'm trying. I'm trying. I can hear the heart in your voice. You were there, man.
Starting point is 00:24:48 Do not let this get you down. Do not let this weigh you down. I mean, yeah. I mean, I hope that this guy is going to be listening to heavy metal music all season, and I hope he comes up, shows up wearing nothing but black next year. I hope he's fired up. But, again, I just think they're so close. So I think next year could be really special.
Starting point is 00:25:11 I agree, man. Next. I just want to let you know you guys did a hell of a freaking job this year, and I can't wait to see you guys win the title next year. Conversely, also I want to congratulate Jimmy for the sixth win, because in 2010 he won one for the thumb. Tonight's ring goes in the middle finger straight to Donald McMab. Pardon my language, but fuck him.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Oh. Amen. Yeah. Amen. Put that six one on the middle finger. I just, what I really don't approve. respect about people is when they think because I played one sport, that makes me an expert on all sports, first of all. And the second thing is, is Donovan McNabb, I'm sure, never showed up to
Starting point is 00:25:50 play against the New York Giants, not thinking about what Michael Strayhan was going to do. You know, I mean, I'm sure he watched film on Michael Strayhan the week of the game preparing to play the Giants. Clearly he doesn't take this job nearly as seriously as he took his job as quarterback. It would have been really nice to Donovan actually maybe say, you know what, maybe I should do some research before I say one of the most ignorant things that's ever come out of somebody's mouth. I'm not trying to suggest that NASCAR drivers are as athletic as football players, but to suggest that it doesn't take an extreme amount of endurance to go 200 miles an hour for four hours,
Starting point is 00:26:27 all right, and be better than anyone else in the free world. What a, mm-hmm. Oh, I'm so mad right now. Did you see what Rick? Did you see what Rick? I did. I'd like Donovan to go try to run the Boston Marathon with Jimmy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Just what an idiot. It's just such a stupid comment. Yeah, it was. Not that it pissed me off or anything. Next. I just want to thank the entire 88 team for all the hard work they do at getting that car to run as good as it has all year long. I watched many races this year from a hospital bed, and nothing quite makes me as happy. and so as good as whenever I see that team do well.
Starting point is 00:27:09 That's pretty solid. That'll put things in perspective right there. Man, next. Hey, guys, first time caller, season-long listener. Just want to say congrats to Dale Jr., Steve LaTarton, the whole 88 team. You guys spent an unbelievable chase season together this year, and we're really excited about 2014. Taylor, my, just want to say thanks for the Dirtymore Radio,
