This is Dale Jr., and you're listening to Dirty Moe Radio.
What do you got there, but left front looks flat.
Yeah, we had a left front tire go flat, and we went into the wall with the right side of the car.
The Dale Jr. download, presented by Spy, starts now.
And Dale Earnard Jr. is proud to have innovative eyewear brand spy on board as a sponsor of the Dale Jr.
download. Learn more about Spy at Spyoptic.com with Mike Davis, with Mike Hoag, with Amanda Troutman.
I am Taylor Zarzer.
And that about said it all right there.
We had a left flat, and we ran the right side of the car into the wall.
A lot of people had problems in Fontana on Sunday, including the 88, but an unbelievable comeback after what happened.
In fact, I'm going to stop rambling about it.
Let's hear what Dale Jr. had to say after the race.
Hey, Dirtya, radio fans.
This is Junior.
I just got home from the race in Fontana, and just thinking about it.
everything that happened all the way home on the flight and listening to everybody on Twitter and all the comments.
It's just a really weird race, really crazy.
All the stuff happening with the tires and everybody's sort of pointing fingers at this and that and the other.
You know, it's just everybody's going to have an opinion about it, and we'll debate it back and forth for weeks.
But we still, you know, we battled back and, you know, made a decent day out of it.
We hit the wall pretty good.
I was real surprised that the car didn't have more damage.
in the right front.
I thought we had bent the upper ball joint or something
because the splitter was dragging the ground really bad,
but all that had really happened was the toe got knocked out a little bit
and the splitter brace was bent down.
The guys had this ingenious plan to drop the car on top of this piece of tubin
several times to sort of bend the splitter brace back up.
It's something they'd been, you know, they'd done at the shop,
very kind of a crude measure, but it still worked wonders to get the car wear or to split.
wooden drag and we got another caution and got to work on the toe and made the car actually pretty good.
We drove it up to fifth one time before another left front tire started tearing apart.
I could basically the tire flexes at the at the marriage between the sidewall and the tread.
And in my opinion, going down the back straightway, it's very bumpy.
And when you send that tire through all those bumps in succession, it flexes that seam where the sidewall and the tread are put together.
and if you take something and bend it back and forth multiple times,
it's going to eventually break.
But I can feel that this next tire is starting to vibrate and shake very badly.
So we came in and took it off and put on another tire,
and we were able to finish the race and sit there
and saw a lot of other people have the same trouble.
It was odd because it was left fronts and left rears.
It wasn't just left fronts.
But, yeah, again, just happy the team worked hard all day.
You're going to expect that for,
from the 88 team, no matter what happens, they're going to keep grinding.
And to be honest with you, I didn't have a lot of confidence that we were going to get anything
out of the day after we hit the wall as hard as it hit.
But the team pushed and pushed and sent me out there with a car that was capable of running
a top 15.
At one point, I thought it was good enough to finish in the top five.
So real proud of them and I want to give them a lot of credit for getting something out of
today.
And we get to move on to Martinsville.
try to get a grandfather clock. We've been trying to get one there for years, and it's a fun race track
that I've always enjoyed racing at. I've raced late models there and race the cup car there for many, many years,
and just really had a lot of good cars and a lot of fast cars that finished well, and hopefully we can get something out of there
other than just a good finish. Hopefully we can go there and win the race. But it'll be fun. Hope you guys tune in.
Hope you enjoyed today. We're working hard. We're grinding. We'll see you later. Thanks for tuning in.
Good stuff there from Dale Jr. on a 12th place finish, a crazy 12th place finish,
as he blows the tire on lap 43.
He's one point behind Carl Edwards and goes to try to win that grandfather clock.
Mike Davis, what was your perspective after listening to the junior there about the tire,
the track?
What did you have the biggest beef with?
Oh, man.
Well, I will say this about the tire.
I mean, I really did enjoy watching a race that had tire fall off.
All right, so that there is that.
racing really good. I think that's what racing's about, right? Now, that being said,
I would like a tire that actually lasted through the single, through a single fuel run.
You know, that, that I think is a fair assumption. Now, I'm not pointing fingers,
blaming anybody. I'm just saying that that would be nice to have fall off and a tire that went
through a single fuel run. So that was my first observation. But really, I was so impressed
with the perseverance of the 88 team. I was so impressed with Steve LaTart. I was so impressed with Steve LaTart.
So it amazed me.
They went from the back.
They restarted 43rd after that first tire failure.
And then went all the way up to, I think, fifth or six.
Yep.
Right, Mike?
Yep.
And then had another one going down, another issue of vibration.
That was going to be a big deal in another lap.
Dale Jr. wisely brought it to pit road,
unexpected pit stop, restarted 38th.
They just showed a lot of poise, a lot of perseverance.
And to finish 12th, it was just a good day for them to be able to do that.
Now, how they did it is still one of the funniest parts of Sunday.
Like, you know, dropping a tire, I'm sorry, dropping a car on a block to fix it is just,
it's the most redneck thing I've ever heard of and I love it.
Well, and they never, Lattard said, we've tried this in the shop.
I think we're going to like it.
Yeah, he turned their pit stall into a garage there.
Yeah.
That's pretty cool.
Taylor, don't you know somebody tried that at home?
They're like, my car's been acting up.
Oh, it'll be on YouTube.
that and then they're like that a tart's a liar it didn't help nothing you know and and now they're
going to blame the tart for you know that I'm a little disappointed I'm a little disappointed dad oh hadn't
put this on YouTube yet you know I mean I'm that was that was that was right so Hogue you were
there tell us what you think I mean were people were people been out of shape about the tire where
they've been out of shape about what junior said there which was fascinating to me is you know
you go through all those bumps time and time again 200 laps you know
had more to do with the surface on the track than it had to do with the tire?
I think this is the one reason I was upset I didn't go to the bus and watch it
because I was curious what they were saying on TV because at the pit box, I mean, it was just kind of like,
all right, we're at the 20-lap, 25-lap window who's going to blow a tire next.
You know, in the beginning when it first happened to Harvick, we're like, oh, that's unfortunate.
That stuck, he had a fast car.
And it happened to us.
Like, oh, uh-oh.
You know, and then we didn't realize early on that it was going to become a problem.
And then it was almost, you know, like Stevie said, you know, there's no sense.
trying to even make a fuel run.
I mean, we're going to worry about tires.
We're about running out of tires at one point.
Right, right.
So it was just interesting.
I really want to go back and just watch a race on TV to hear what the commentators had to say.
I didn't get to see that angle.
I bring beer.
Well, I have to tell you, I was really upset about the tires until I heard Dale Jr. there talking about it.
I mean, it doesn't make it where I don't think that we should consider new tires for next year.
I know it's the same ones that they used last season.
And I still have some real issues with the fact that, like Mike, you said,
he can't last an entire fuel run.
If I'm Jimmy Johnson right now, I'm pretty torn up about what happened on Sunday.
Basically, it costs the guy a race.
Yeah, it totally cost Jimmy Johnson a race.
But Taylor, did you find it so interesting how drivers had so many varying opinions about it?
It was like, you know, Junior was the only one that even brought up the bumps on the backstretch when it came to the tire issue.
That's interesting, though, and I think it makes a lot of sense.
And they got to fix this.
I mean, listen, there's been a lot of drama.
It's been one of the best races of the year of the last few years.
It really has.
I mean, last year you could argue it was the best race of the year in terms of drama.
And this year, the finish was incredible, you know, with this phenom, Kyle Larson,
coming after Kyle Bush again, back-to-back days.
And it did.
It had a lot of drama.
But like you said, look, you want to see, made the best man win.
And that wasn't the case on Sunday.
And, you know, these tires, they do.
to last a fuel run.
And if there's anything anybody said, it's what you said, Davis, about that.
Now, I know we don't typically play a lot of in-car chatter here on the program.
Amanda, I'd like to play a couple clips that you have for us because I think it kind of puts
in perspective just how insane what the 88 team was going through on Sunday.
And here is after that first blown tire, Stevie and Dale trying to fix everything.
The right side will well, Jason.
Tell me about the war hammer thing.
it up for Jason or see if you think the splitter's bent down.
Jason gets a packer ready, Penske.
Turn three, have about 45.
Suspenship doesn't look bent.
Do something here?
Time and then let's go.
All right, let's go.
Don't speed.
Don't speed.
Listen into that, a couple things come to mind.
First of all, this 88 team is phenomenal.
I mean, just everybody on it is so committed to trying to fix a problem and get the best
finish that you possibly can.
And there's no question that team finishes 33rd if they don't.
go nuts trying to fix all those things there and try this crazy thing in the pits that's never
been done before.
That's the first thought that comes to mind, Mike Davis.
And the second thought is, I'm really going to miss Steve LaTard.
It doesn't mean that there's not other great crew chiefs out there that are capable of
helping Dale Jr. win championships in the future.
But I just think that Steve LaTart, and listen, next week I'll be in Texas in the pits,
listening to 15 different crew chiefs.
And plenty of them are great.
I have never heard somebody better at troubleshooting problems,
crisis management than Steve LaTard.
I'm going to miss listening to it.
He was conducting an orchestra during that caution.
The second caution on lap 43 was a symphony,
and Steve LaTart was the conductor.
It was amazing how he, in a moment of crisis,
knows exactly what to say,
and his communication is so clear and concise.
I was talking to Hogue about this yesterday in the office.
It was amazing to me.
that man has a plan even when he's calling it on the fly.
And he's so clear and concise.
And this wasn't the first time that happened on Sunday.
I mean, this happened several times.
But that man, in a moment of Christ, I don't want anybody else.
Yeah, amen to that.
It really paints a picture of just the unbelievable job.
The 88 team did with, as you said, the conductor there, Steve LaTart.
All right, this week we feel like rewarding the happiest caller with a pair of spies,
Happy Lynn sunglasses here on Reaction Theater.
Thanks to our sponsor, this happy fan will be receiving a pair of Dale Jr.'s signature spy, dirty-mose sunglasses with the happy lens.
Learn more about the happylens at spyoptic.4.4-hash happy.
Here we go with Reaction Theater.
I know you're supposed to wait until after the race to call, but lap 93, I'm sitting here watching Junior Battle for 10th.
After he cut a tire, hit the wall.
Yeah, baby, that's what championship teams are made up.
to dig guys way to dig i can't wait to see how this unfolds dale yeah yeah yeah i don't know we may
have an early uh eater early leader early leader in the clubhouse taylor for the happy lands early eater
that's a very good good year it's interesting uh yeah it's very good perspective there from him next
thanks good year for screwing up a good race my god i'm going down the road to the good year store and
Borrow him that son of a
B.
To the ground.
Damn.
Clearly, he's not a better.
That guy right there.
I thought he was great.
He's angry.
Do we need to bring in our legal team
to absolve us from any
responsibility if anything happens?
Well, Brad Kiselowski made a good point.
Well, y'all need to stop lying, though.
All of y'all want to go see that caller, burn that place to the ground.
No, I know.
That would be hilarious.
No, no, no, I don't want that to happen.
Y'all are a bunch of liars.
That's not true.
What were you going to say, how?
I want him to put it on YouTube right now.
Well, Kiselowski tweeted after the race, he said,
Good Year hasn't changed a tire to a lot of these places,
but we have the same aggressive setup,
so will this keep happening throughout the year at tracks?
It'll be interesting to see, yeah.
That's good point.
It'll be interesting to see.
Yep, next.
First of all, I'm drunk.
Second of all, hell of a run today.
He passed everybody in the damn field.
Eddie ain't was good, but, you know, stuff happens.
Tire was terrible.
The car was okay.
Steve fought back.
Digginson did a good spot in a race car.
Jure did a good driving race car.
It's kind of go to Martinsville.
Good point.
I like a like I qualify.
by saying he's drunk, even though he didn't sound very drunk.
He's pretty eloquent for a drunk man.
Right.
He was much more than I would be.
And I like how he pointed out Dickerson.
I thought Dickerson did a very good job.
He did do a good job.
That's right.
I wonder if drunk get you a couple points in the happy category.
I mean, probably a couple notches.
A couple points.
All right.
Evidently burning a building.
They did not get that man a happy lens from Spider.
Next.
When Junior was a lap down and the costume came out,
I'm screaming out of TV.
Pit, pit, pit, pit.
If we don't is I'll blow another tire on the green flag, and we'll be five laps down.
The Tart left him out, took the wave around.
June May's way way back up to 12.
Good call, with Tart.
That's why you're sitting on the pit box, and I'm sitting at home drinking Mountain Dew.
All hail king of the Tart.
I can't argue with that.
Next.
Son of a b-buck.
I'm so pissed right now at Good Year.
Junior and the Wall, he's had problems all weekend long and nothing's being done.
Thanks a lot, Good Year.
I'm done with you.
Goodbye.
Yikes.
So you're telling me we shouldn't get caller two and caller five together.
They shouldn't be in the same place together.
It might be dangerous.
They may already be together.
Right.
I don't know.
I mean, really, here's something.
What's interesting, when it comes down to tires, I don't know.
I'm no tire expert.
That's why we have people that do know, right?
Taylor, I mean, you know, we call them, and I'm going to tell you, Sunday, Regan Smith was giving an educational course on these tires.
And let me tell you, I even called him.
I said, Regan, make sense of this.
What's going on?
He says, these cars are heavier.
They're going faster.
It's just simple science.
You know, it's the same tire, but they're running low air pressures,
and they just simply, the tires can't withstand the changes that these cars.
They're just going faster and they're heavier.
We should have had Rob Lopes on today.
He was all kinds of spun out.
I bet he was.
You can't go on it.
He had me, like, every tire that came in, he had me taking pictures on my phone of it.
Oh, really?
Oh, so you're part of the investigative team.
I was like, don't tweet.
those photos. Okay. Mike Hoag's CSI.
Got it. Next.
Hey, Jr., the best part of California is your trip
home and tweeting with Graham Ray Hall.
You got to do this for the fans, dude.
Swap rides. Look forward to hearing from you.
Taylor, you aren't on Twitter. You're going through Lent right now
and you're in Twitter's what you've deprived yourself of.
Mike Hogue, explain what this caller's talking about because this is fascinating.
So Graham Rahal was at the track someday, and he's,
also has National Guard on his Indy car.
So after the race, he had tweeted,
Hey, Dale Jr., we should swap rides.
It'd be fun.
Well, Dale chimes right back at him.
Thank you, man, I'm in.
And I looked over and said, are you serious?
He goes, yeah, that'd be fun.
I said, this isn't just on Twitter anymore.
Right.
And you have IndyCar retweeting it.
You've been in the Apple's Motor Speedway tweeting it.
Laura Scott had a couple of tracks email her on the flight saying,
hey, is this for real?
It's going to happen.
So I told Dale, so we're in the running.
Oh, man, yeah.
That would be cool.
Junior, this isn't just two.
two pals conversing on Twitter.
Yeah, that's a great idea.
Dale Jr. to run Indy 500.
Graham Ray Hall.
It's not a group text. Yeah, Graham Ray Hall will run Daytona.
Now, it's not talking about swapping races.
They're talking about just going to, like, doing a test.
Yeah, doing a test.
That'd be awesome.
That is a really cool idea.
A huge financial guard.
All right.
Next.
Rebound.
I want to talk about a rebound.
That was a fucking rebound.
Good job, boys.
Woo-hoo.
He was happy.
I like him.
He was happy.
He was pretty good.
Anytime he told.
woo and you know you're happy that martinsville fella was pretty good though i have to say
all right we got one more to hear after the problems that everybody was having with them damn tired
up take 12 our team fought hard all day long come back from that crash stage 12 that's a good day
as far as i'm concerned that stuff uh there's no doubt that it was a very good day uh given all that
they went through and that we always appreciate people calling in to reaction theater it's
in 24-7. All you have to do is call toll-free 1-855-740-1902 and leave us your voicemail message.
It will play the best each week right here on Dirty Mo Radio.
So, Miss Amanda Troutman, tell me, tell us, you know, we all obviously speculated on who we thought should be the winner, but ultimately you decide who will be the winner.
And that makes so much more sense.
I agree.
I know who I like.
Who do you like?
So Amanda, who gets the spy Happy Lynn sunglasses?
He prepared for hate mail to the office.
Yeah.
I'll just give it to you.
You know, I think we go with the guy that was real happy about the rebound.
He was pumped.
Yeah, I like that.
That's a good choice.
Yeah, it is.
That's the one I would have chosen as well.
Can you cue the happy song at this point?
I wish.
Can you sing it for us?
There's some royalty fees there.
Hold on a second, Amanda.
That's a great idea.
Hogue is singing right now.
We need to just be quiet and let this happen.
It's stuck in my head.
Go.
I heard that in Flock of Seagulls this morning, and I can't stop singing them.
Go ahead.
Because I'm happy.
Happy, happy.
That's all I know.
Happy.
Happy lens.
It makes sense in this part.
We're in the Dirty Moe Radio studio, I might add.
Taylor's in his own personal studio.
Taylor,
he was bobbing his head while he was doing that.
I've never been happier.
Yeah.
You ought to get the sunglasses, Taylor, for being so happy that you weren't here to see that.
You're just bagged.
You're thinking of the idea to play that song.
Learn more about the happy lens.
It's spy optic.
Dot forward slash happy.
Let's throw the white flag.
White flag right there, white flag.
All right, here we go.
Mike Hogue.
