Starting point is 00:00:01 This is Dale Jr., and you're listening to Dirty Moe Radio. In qualified 32nd, Dale Jr. finished 6th in Bristol, Marty Smith. Chicken salad out of chicken... The Dale Jr. Download starts now. ...time right there, buddy. We've got to get a little better. So for once we finish better than we ran. Seems like every time here we finish worse than we run.
Starting point is 00:00:35 So it's nice to be the other way. How about that? How about that? With Mike Davis and Marty Smith. I'm Taylor Zarser and Marty. Again, you mentioned chicken salad out of chicken bleep. It absolutely is. But it's one of those runs that further exemplifies how far this team's come.
Starting point is 00:00:56 I mean, you don't hear junior complaining on the radio and Raisin Cain, which you know and I know he would have done years ago. Mike, you were there this weekend. You saw it up close and personal from the qualifying on Friday. First of all, what happened there? how stress for people on Saturday. How stressed were they with 100 laps to go Sunday to get to that finish? Well, first of all, after qualifying, they knew what it was. I don't know what it was.
Starting point is 00:01:21 They knew why they qualified poorly, which makes you kind of feel, okay, well, they say no. They felt great after practice on Saturday. And so I said, 30 seconds, they've got this. I believe I even texted you. I said, I think they're going to finish in the top five. Well, especially when they were, they jumped to seventh, I think, on the board and happy hour. So that they felt good. After that race, Junior got out of the car and I was like, man, I just want to hug your neck.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Because he kept his composure and he went in there and they figured out the problem. They had a 16th, 17th place car. Everybody in the room knew it. And they figured out how to make it better. And Junior was just as much a part of that as Steve LaTarder, the team was because his feedback was really good. That's where he's come the furthest in the last two years. Yeah. That is the poor.
Starting point is 00:02:09 It's not a talent thing. It's not a, I don't even think it's an equipment thing. I think it is a personal conviction thing. It's a, okay, I'm committed. I am accountable, and I'm going to do what it takes, and will keep myself together so that my team is behind me. That doesn't mean that it didn't get frustrated. I want to play what you're talking about right there.
Starting point is 00:02:28 The communication is great, but he's still holding people's feet to the fire. In fact, let's hear this. Put your hand together. Let's go. I'm getting better. You're ready. You give me more problems. Yeah, when you make bigger adjustments, the track's tightened it up, I think.
Starting point is 00:02:52 That's different. That's not what it used to be. It used to be a whole lot of four-letter words. We'd have to warn the beat button out four years ago. It was more of a frustration in the past, but there it was. Analytical. It still, it was friendly fire, I guess, Mike. You know, one thing that you could always say is a problem is when you worry about the feelings of your pit crew or your team,
Starting point is 00:03:16 And so you're like, I got to start thinking of how to address this without hurting feelings. That's a problem too. Yep. So here you have construction. What do you call it? Constructive criticism. Yeah, constructive criticism. Construction criticism.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Yeah. Construction criticism. That's the redneck version. And not worrying about that. Say, hey, listen, let's get our heads together. Come on, guys. You know, the car's getting worse. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:37 My car's getting worse. And you can do that in an analytical fashion instead of one with a negative tone. tone that someone takes personally. Yeah. No, I mean, and obviously it worked. However, that was caution six. Lap 249, Mike, the midway point. They were running 11th at that point. But then they took a big swing.
Starting point is 00:03:59 They tried a four-tire stop on lap 322. Didn't really work. Didn't really work. So I mentioned the big swing. That came three cautions later at lap 389. Towards the end. And Junior's running 18th at the time. And let's hear about.
Starting point is 00:04:15 about the big swing. Put that rubber back out. The one of the one of the four tires on it. Two in the rear. Put a hundred to go here. Starts, man, we can finish up here in the top five. We just get everything. The whole field is all right because that all, you know, keep finding it all
Starting point is 00:04:57 can and we get something here before the finish. That's really good leadership. The eternal optimist. Yeah. And he called it. He did. He called it. We were running 18th at that point.
Starting point is 00:05:06 And he goes, we're to finish in top five. Yeah. We're like, what? What's he talking about? He almost called it. Marty, you've seen this in all the teams. You've seen the communication where it's awful between driver and crew chief, and you've seen it where it's absolutely phenomenal and it helps win a championship.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Right there's as good as it gets, isn't it? Well, here's the thing about Dale. Dale has to know when he is sitting in there and he's 400 laps into a 500-lap bullring show. He has to know that those guys are with him. Yeah. That is the way that is his emotional makeup. Damn it. You better be with him.
Starting point is 00:05:42 me and you better tell me that you're with me and you better show me you're with me that's what that is exemplified right there yeah yeah and this was the biggest way i asked junior in the car going to the airport afterwards i said that big change you know you know taking the rubber out and two rounds on the left two rounds on the right was your car the best at the end he goes that was the best my car was after that change right there boom fast so stevie made that call at caution 10 lap 454 so you got 46th out of eight do you're 16th out of eight do you're We're on the lead lap, but why not? I mean, you're not going forward that much.
Starting point is 00:06:15 Yeah, you've got 46 laps to go in 14th, and only a couple people came down, Mike, to get tires there, and Stevie decided to do it. Here's the call. Left, left, left, left, left, two, one, left, left. One, the ship left. Here, good job. One to go to the laps.
Starting point is 00:07:13 So he comes in 14th there, Marty. He takes the restart in 11th. He's eighth and two laps. And obviously ends up finishing six. What a great call. It is, I mean, and it's just such a crap shoot. I mean, you don't know. To take lefts, it's funny because it seems unorthodox.
Starting point is 00:07:28 It does. And sure enough, it made that thing hook around the corner for him. What a puppeteer out there, man. All right, two-tar, two-tie, Pippie, left, left. Sounds like he's calling his dog out of the field. Come in, come in, come in, come in, come in. Sound like my grandma herding cattle. Mike, I want you to talk about just how fired up that entire team was,
Starting point is 00:07:48 Dale Jr. included after that call. So you have all this stress for, a 48-hour period. And then in a, really in a span of what, 15, 20 minutes, everybody gets so fired up of, man, what an awesome call Stevie just made. And the entire team leaves Thunder Valley in such a great spirits. You almost, at the end of these races, now you kind of expect that to happen. But there was a feeling at Bristol that, you know, we kind of were just running mid-pack
Starting point is 00:08:17 all day. So it was like, is this really going to happen? And that restart where Kozlowski got bottled up and it certainly helped. No doubt about it. And so Jr. happened to be on the inside line and he picked off, you know, four or five spots right there. But he was driving away from him. That hadn't happened all day. He was driving away from him.
Starting point is 00:08:35 So, yeah, man, everybody was pumped. It was cool. It's just one of those, you know, I said this a moment ago. There are certain days in this marathon-ish season that don't seem to have that great an impact. but they have a huge impact in the broader scope because of the confidence that that instills, but also the points that are accrued. Think about the difference. That 10 points between 16th and 6th could prove massive three months from now.
Starting point is 00:09:05 But, Mike, you've talked to him after every race and you were with him, obviously, yesterday. He was confident after 2nd in Daytona. He felt really good about 5th and Phoenix. Pretty good about 7th in Vegas. What was his confidence level after yesterday? Huge. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:21 It was really, it was big. And I think we heard it in his radio chatter at the end. But man, Stevie, you know, when Stevie came up to him, he was doing media interviews on the lift after the race. And he just stopped when Stevie walked by. And he was like, you know, giving him a high five. And, you know, you're my man. I won't say what he really said. But, you know, but it was just, it was a really cool feeling to see the team after, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:47 know, it's a six-place finish. A lot of people have a problem with the six-place finish, but it was a six-place finish when you could have finished 15. Should have. I mean, but for all intents and purposes. I love Steve LaDart.com. A reminder that this podcast is brought to you by Dale Jr. Potato Chips. I noticed Marty's colleague, David Newton, did a funny piece on the Dale Jr. Potato
Starting point is 00:10:09 Chips for ESPN.com this past weekend. You can see for yourself what everyone's talking about. Go to Dale Jr. Foods.com for a store locator or to order. or to order any of four flavors today. Let's go off the grid. The grid. Marty Smith, ESPN Motorsports reporter, the very best there is in the industry. You had a conversation with Mr. Charlie Daniels.
Starting point is 00:10:37 I did, and it was just fantastic. We share two big passions, and that's country music and NASCAR racing. And I asked him about all that stuff, but what really stood out to me during the conversation was actually what he had to say about Dale, Junior, unprompted. I mean, I didn't bring it up. He just started to note a relationship that he built, or not a relationship, a conversation that he had with Dale Sr. It was last win at Talladega, 2000.
Starting point is 00:11:04 And then he transitioned into Dale Jr. And what he said was extremely poignant. All right. Dustin, you got it. Let's hear it. And what you guys didn't get to hear there is what Charlie, I call him Charlie, what Mr. Daniels. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Like we're homeboys. Yeah. What Mr. Daniels said to me about how people adore Jr. He said to me, people don't just cheer for Junior. Some drivers, they have fans, they get cheered. People love Jr. They feel like they know him, almost as if he's their friend or a part of their family, that it's a much deeper feeling.
Starting point is 00:12:17 And I found that to be such an interesting piece of analysis from him. Well, for somebody as authentic as Charlie Daniels, to say that about Dale Jr., is pretty strong. Dale Jr., greater than Stroker Ace. Oh, whoa. Well, I mean, Hannel down. Dale would say no to that. The way that he just talked about him, I mean, I know Stroker Ace was born to race,
Starting point is 00:12:40 but the way that CDB used to play Stroker Ace, you would think, man, he was talking about Dale and Art Jr. just there. By the way, Mr. Daniels is in my cabinet. That was Charlie. So that's fine that you're calling him Charlie. And finally, and this isn't most important. Mr. Daniel is in your cab. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:56 People hit Jack Daniel's last name is not Daniels. There's an apostrophe, yes, yes. Finally, and most important, is that was awesome. That was awesome. What we just played in the fact that you had a conversation with Charlie Daniels is incredible. But the fact that the Chris Mortensen of the motorsports industry, or the Jay Glazer, whoever else you want to name, the fact that Marty Smith, the biggest name in motorsports reporting,
Starting point is 00:13:26 has a piece of crap recorder of Fisher-Pry. recorder that my eight-year-old child has probably a better recorder than that. I mean, I don't know. That sound quality was from the 1930s. Well, I just assumed Charlie did the interview from the bathroom. Hey, man, BJ's wholesale warehouse. I think I got this for about $13 on the sale rack. It is pretty bobo.
Starting point is 00:13:52 It has this USB thing that you can plug right into your computer. It doesn't work. The worldwide leader. That's right. What do you think about that? But you've seen. You've seen firsthand, you've done appearance after appearance after appearance. You've seen how people react to this guy.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Yeah. Do you have you witnessed, how have you witnessed that manifest itself what Charlie Daniels is saying right there? I'll give you a good story from yesterday. We were on pit road. Charlie Daniels does the Pledge of Allegiance. They don't do Pledge of Allegiance at the race. He does the Pledge of Allegiance. We're sitting there on pit road at the car.
Starting point is 00:14:24 After he does his Pledge of Allegiance, we all looked at each other, and Jr. is like, damn straight. Yeah. It was great. You never had the hair on the back of your next stand up for the Pledge of Allegiance until yesterday, right? It was good. It was good. That's awesome stuff. I can see him going damn straight. That's awesome stuff.
Starting point is 00:14:44 Hey, Mike, you tweeted about this this weekend. We have a new feature now. We bring in all these new features each week. We've had the race chatter. We've had the tweets. Now we have voicemails. Reaction theater, baby. Let's hear it from the fans.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Let them tell us what they think about the race. I like that. name too. All right, here we go, Dustin, with Reaction Theater. Great job today, Dale Jr. and Steve LaTart, and I hope Joey Logano kicks Denny Hamlin's A Double Moonsign. A Double Moonshine. Hamlin, after that, was like, you're a bug on my wheel windshield. His reaction was perfect. He didn't react.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Yeah. He's just like, whatever. What's next? I just want to say I am definitely proud of Team 88 We stayed out of trouble all day Came home to sticks We didn't have the best cars He'd made some great adjustment And at least we didn't have Joey Lugano
Starting point is 00:15:39 Coming up to our window yelling at it It's always a good day A lot of shots at the 22 What's next? Please three-way speed dial Joey Lugano and deadly hamlin That's funny We should work on that
Starting point is 00:15:53 Dust and work on that Yeah, well here's the thing though Joey doesn't have Denny's number Apparently according to Denny on Twitter He said you got my number son That's what Dirty Mail Radio is for. Yeah, you know which kind of shot. We bring people together.
Starting point is 00:16:02 In 2013, we're having fights with each other on Twitter. Love can build a breeze. I like the judge. Moving along. What's next? Twitter fight. That's all right. That's it.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Yeah. What do you think Cal Yardboro would say about the Twitter fight? He doesn't know what a tweeter is. What's next? I think he does. Hey, Mike, maybe with your connections, you could tell Fox that they should, use the side-by-side when the race in action is intense at the end of the race, not on freaking cautions.
Starting point is 00:16:35 Are you kidding me? Every time the racing gets great, they go to commercial, and there's no side-by-side. Oh, there's a caution. Call is running on track at 40 miles an hour. Let's put it on side-by-side now. Are you kidding me? Go, Jr. He's got a point.
Starting point is 00:16:49 I do know that the race between Brad and Casey, the two and the five, was amazing, and I tweeted. And I said, this race is just sick. Like, wish we could see it. I bet I get a thousand of those a week. What's next? First, get on the ball and tell you about the... Holy smoke! Here's what he's talking about.
Starting point is 00:17:18 Junior at some point, early on the race when the car wasn't doing well, he told T.J. to tell him, hey, tell me if I'm up here sliding through marbles up here. If nobody else is going this high, tell me. And so they go back racing, and I guess this fella doesn't feel like T.J. told him very well. TJ didn't do a good job, huh? I think maybe that guy should spot.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Just like that. Just like that. Hey, Junior! Hold on! Blair! Bleepity-bleep! What's next? Hey, junior, congratulations on the sixth place.
Starting point is 00:17:49 I got a suggestion for you. How about trying to start the race somewhere before 30 seconds? Oh, is that Dan the Junior fan? That sounds like Dan the Junior fan just there. Yeah, well, qualifying, definitely something to gain on for sure. What's next? You want him for me, could you? Because she's my daddy.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Hey, let me tell you something, man. Let me tell you all something. There are some weird. Yeah. Hey. All right. I don't know what to add to that. That made me really uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:18:27 I mean, I need to go take a shower. I got the Willys. What's next? This is Walker from Medale, Missouri. I like to say Go Dale Jr. All right. That is awesome. We got to have kids involved here.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Absolutely. It's a family show. What's next? Steve Freaking LaTart That's it That's it Dot com
Starting point is 00:18:49 Yeah What else you got to say Nothing I like that man Reaction Theater That's fun isn't That was a pretty good First edition of reaction
Starting point is 00:18:57 It's only gonna get better It is Once the people get Once it gets what we call Traction Yeah Yeah I love Junior Nation I love Adel Junior fan
Starting point is 00:19:05 There you go Don't you We'll keep doing that All right folks A reminder There are four flavors They keep it interesting Michael
Starting point is 00:19:11 Yes they do There are four flavors of Dale Jr. potato chips, crispy, original, zesty jalapeno, creole and green onion, and Carolina barbecue. Ooh! Hey, you know what? Go to Dale Jr. Foods.com right now to get yours today. A couple years ago, I did a sit-down interview with Junior. And I was trying to get all deep and asking me a deep question. I said, hey, what in your life can you not do without?
Starting point is 00:19:36 And he kind of looked down and he goes, terriaki sauce. I remember that. Terriotie kick. Is he still on a terriarchy kick? No. Ryan McGee just left me a voicemail. This is big.
Starting point is 00:19:49 That is good. Probably big news. Do we just want to play it as is and not know what it's about? I bet you the audio quality on that's better than his support. Charlie Daniels. Let's throw the white flag. All right, boys, great clips has announced a text to win promotion where you can win a trip to Talladega and a private meet and greet with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Marty.
Starting point is 00:20:11 All you have to do is text Dale to 43728 for a chance to win. More details on greatclips.com backslash promotions. Sunday's Auto Club 400 will be televised by Fox at 3 p.m. Eastern Time, noon local. Finally, I just got to say congratulations to our 88 tire specialist Rob Lopes. Let me tell you what he did. He ate the big unit hot dog, a 24-inch chili cheese dog in six minutes. I wonder if he had an issue in his breeches. For Marty Smith, Mike Davis, and Dustin Lee.
