Starting point is 00:00:01 This is Dale Jr. And you're listening to Dirty Moe Radio. And that man flew through the field, finishes second, and is your new points leader, Mike. Cussing, fighting, wrecking, business just picked up. The Dale Jr. download starts now. Oh, come on, low, low, low, real, low, real flag. You're going to be P2. Woo, buddy, you're a closing machine.
Starting point is 00:00:32 Honey, you can know this two are going to wreck each other. Keep sticking together like we're doing. Forget the loving something. I'm going to tell you what, I'm going to be watching Twitter tonight. With Mike Davis. Taylor Zars are, I don't even know where to start, Mike. What an unbelievable day for the sport. You certainly hope and pray that Denny Hamlin is okay with his back injury.
Starting point is 00:00:58 I know he spent last night in the hospital out there in California, but Lugano and Hamlin are fighting for the win after they're fighting each other last week. They wreck each other. Kyle Bush wins the race. Dale Jr. Picks up 16 spots and 13 laps is your new points leader. Tony Stewart is cussing out. shoving him. Lugano's throwing water bottles at him.
Starting point is 00:01:21 That's NASCAR, baby. It's NASCAR. Hey, you know who my heart goes out for the most? It's that guy or that young lady at home that had the inner key and they were ready to press it because they were about to troll Jr. Nation hard. And Dale Jr. comes out of nowhere and gets in the top 10 and you're like, okay, we'll establish the top 10. Wait, he's in the top five. Whoa, he's in second. He's like, what's happened? Well, you're right.
Starting point is 00:01:47 There are so many people, I'm sure, they're like, the hell with this, that are junior fans. We're going to finish in the 20s. I've had it. I'm watching basketball. Oh, you think? All you needed to do is check the Twitter feeds 10 laps earlier, and people were losing their minds. But I tell you what, it was an up and down day, to say the least. Started off kind of bad, and then they, you know, made an adjustment, got it better.
Starting point is 00:02:11 Yeah, it was a roller coaster. You know, they start 15th. You're right. They're in the 20s after the first long run. run. They take a huge swing at it, and it really worked. And let's hear about that. The third caution, Dustin, lap 90, they're all the way up to fourth. I drive off for control. I mean, yeah, it's working. You know, there's something about this year, the adjustability of that 88 car, have you noticed that, you know, where teams will chase their car all day or whatever, even when
Starting point is 00:02:46 the 88 through five races this year, even when the 88 is at its worst, it is usually just one adjustment away. One LaTart tinkering here to be a top five car. I think the biggest reason for that is communication. The communication Dale Jr. and LaTart have, they understand each other. And there's so many times, and Dale Jr's experience this, but I think every driver has where you're trying your best to explain what's wrong with the car and you just can't get through to your crew chief, they are getting through to each other. I don't think there's any question about that. But they had a terrible pit stop at the fourth caution lap 118. It's funny right past the midway point, the Fox guys are talking about who they think's going to win the race. And the first guy they go to
Starting point is 00:03:29 is Darrell Walter, but he says, I got my eyes on that 88. I mean, it looked like he had an absolute chance to win this thing. He comes into the pits third. He comes out 23rd. I guess, I guess really he was 21st on the board, but it did say on the screen on Fox, 23rd at one point right after he came out of bed. So I guess he actually lost 18 spots there on the track. You saw Junior's pretty calm. Don't worry, man. I'll get it back for us.
Starting point is 00:04:12 And my gosh, I mean, he drove angry and did. But, man, if you're part of Junior Nation, I'm sure we're going to hear from him a little later in the show. I think they noticed. I think they noticed. Yeah, it was. Are you saying Darrell Waltrip said that? I got my eye on the 88 before the pit stop?
Starting point is 00:04:30 Before the pit stop. Well, then now we know what happened. Yeah, he cursed him. Yeah. It was the jinx. Well, what he did after that, Mike, and that next green flag run, so he starts 21st and what in four or five lapses, he's ninth, right? Right, right.
Starting point is 00:04:46 I mean, it didn't take long. Yeah, it really didn't. He was unbelievable coming out and he came back and was in the top 10. But then on the seventh caution, he was in the wrong lane, tried to do this bonsai, Kyle Bush move down on the apron, and it. cost him a bunch of spots. Well, he restarted on the inside row. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:07 Restarting on the inside row was not the preferred row. It wasn't. So the seventh caution, lap 176. Now he's back to 16th place, and he was not a happy camper. The wrong lane, do you think the mold left is really hurt us today? I mean, the road lane, look where? He was obviously angry with himself. He was angry with everyone at that time.
Starting point is 00:05:40 But, yeah, he thought at that point, Mike, after that green run, and he loses seven spots so quickly, you thought, all right, there it went. You know what else? We noticed in this race, they just come off of a two-tire pit stop. And through four races this year, two-tire pit stops seem very prevalent because track position is so important, right? Not yesterday. Two tires, at least for the 88.
Starting point is 00:06:02 Two tires just didn't work. No. And so you saw more, the last two stops, I think they put on four tires. But this was coming off a two-tire stop and the inside row. It just didn't work for Junior. So on the last caution, though, you know, you heard Junior there, said, we're not coming down anymore. Well, there was another caution and everybody came down. So, of course, Junior came down as well. And on the eighth caution lap, lap 187, he comes in 24th place. Now, they had a great pit stop there,
Starting point is 00:06:30 and he comes out 18th with 11 to go. You didn't think he'd finish second? I didn't think that. But as they're going through the caution, as they're going through the caution, there's 13 laps to go, and Stevie LaTart says this. 13 to go. That's 25 miles. A lot of time. You know what it's like around here. The guys out there on old tires. I mean, the leader old tires are going to be the ticket. But the guy's back there, last guy in old tire, he's going to be in trouble. What he did after that, you've been around Dale Jr. a long time.
Starting point is 00:07:03 I mean, more than a decade. You've been listening to him every week. You've been watching his every lap every week. What he did after that has to be on one hand, one of the most impressive things you've ever seen him do. starting 18th with 11 to go, finishing second. Yes, he would have finished fourth if Hamlin Legano don't wreck each other, but picking up 14 spots without any luck, 16 spots with a little bit of luck.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Really, it's got to be on one hand, right? It's incredible. It's on one hand, yeah. That was incredible. It reminded me of there's been a couple of times when I just looked at Junior and just said, wow, you know, and a couple times at Daytona, of course, There was one time in Martinsville where he was several laps down and he came back and finishing the top five with a car that was just, you know, banged up.
Starting point is 00:07:54 But this is on one hand, man. This was impressive. I mean, they were looking again at down the barrel of a 15th place finish. It best, really. If they finished 15th, I guess we would have even felt a little better than we were feeling at that restart. And he finished a second. It's incredible. It looked like there was a traffic jam on I-77 in North Sharper.
Starting point is 00:08:17 in one lane and Dale Earnardt Jr. was going 85 miles an hour. He was really going 200. But it looked like he was going nine times faster than the rest of the field on that first lap. It was unbelievable. If you get a chance to see that at NASCAR.com, it's phenomenal what he was able to do. He was sideways, you know, with a few laps to go, almost wreck the car, goes sideways and still picked up a few more spots. You know, as he's trying not to wreck the car, he's cussing like a crazy man to TJ. While all that's going, it was unbelievable. You know what? He's a closer.
Starting point is 00:08:50 He is a closer. He absolutely is a closer. Then on top of that, you have the Hamlin-Lagano thing, Kyle Busch winning, Hamlin leaving on a stretcher. You've got Tony Stewart fighting. It was crazy. We'll talk about that with Ryan McGee. But first, let's hear what Dale Earnhardt Jr. had to say after the race.
Starting point is 00:09:08 You know, we're pretty good at closing races, something I never really was, you know, good at for years. And now we're doing it as good as anybody. So just riding the wave. Just real happy with how things are going on with our team. A reminder of this podcast is brought to you by Dale Jr. Potato Chip. See for yourself what everyone's talking about. Go to Dale Jr. Foods.com for a store locator or to order any of four flavors today.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Again, that is DaleJR Foods.com. Well, a crazy good day for Dale and our junior, but an insane day for the sport. For more on that, let's speed dial. Speed dial. ESPN, the magazine's senior writer. Ryan McGee joins us on the phone now, and what an unbelievable day for the sport. You know, almost every other race ever.
Starting point is 00:10:00 If Dale and Arnard Jr. picks up 16 spots and 11 laps and becomes your points leader, that's the big story. He doesn't even get interviewed on television because of how crazy yesterday was. So how far back do you have to go, McGee, to find a day like that for the sport? You know, it's amazing because, you know,
Starting point is 00:10:18 We're in the middle of March madness, and with all due respect to college basketball, this is two weeks in a row now that the madness has been at the racetrack. Yeah. And it's been such a big deal for NASCAR, you know, interviews on national ESPN radio, like on Sunday night. So that just tells you, you know, the kind of this transcendence has taken place in the last two weekends. And, you know, do the fist of cups hurt whoever gets punched,
Starting point is 00:10:51 but they're not certainly not hurting the sport. And so, no, it's crazy. And you're right. Give me another situation where, you know, so many people don't get interviewed because there's too many other people who've got to get interviewed. And people didn't even finish in the top 20 some of them. So it's crazy. But you can't, you know, now that we've gotten some time, some distance between the end of the race,
Starting point is 00:11:14 and now you're starting to hear people go. What Dale Jr. did? You know, I'm getting texts with people going, wait, did he really do that in the last 10 last? I think this week off is good because the attention is going to start with our junior. Yeah, and it'll give you some time to digest all of what happened. First and foremost, you know, our thoughts are with Denny Hamlin. We want him to be healthy, and I know he's got some back issues, and he spent Sunday night in a California hospital, so we certainly hope he's okay.
Starting point is 00:11:48 But that was crazy. I mean, after what you said happened in Bristol between those two guys, they're fighting each other for the win there, wreck each other on the final lap. Kyle Bush wins. Dale Jr. finish his second. We'll get to Tony Stewart in just a minute. But first talk about this Legano-Hamlin rivalry that's gotten out of control. Can we shell?
Starting point is 00:12:15 Because it's just, you know, listen, was it a great fight when he went after Hamlin in the garage at Bristol? No, I'll stand it right there, but he went after him. And, you know, you can't fault him for doing what he did. I think that the criticism of him for the way that last lap went down, has more to do with the fact that Hamlin's hurt than anything else. But you can't criticize the guy for trying to win a race. And I think that the blocking thing is a little bit of a sham. I think it was just the heat of the moment, some of the stuff that Tony Stewart was saying.
Starting point is 00:12:46 But Joey Legano is soft. At some point we've got to stop with that because the things that he's doing, I'm not saying they're smart. But I'm saying that they certainly aren't things that somebody that is supposed to be, you know, a wimp is capable of doing. And the second thing I want to say is how in the world, can we not have every single inch of concrete retaining wall inside or outside cover with a safer barrier? If there's a safer barrier on the inside of that track at California,
Starting point is 00:13:21 Denny Hamill went home last night. Right. And, you know, I covered IndyCar racing for a long time. I still do every now and then. And I guarantee you the injury that he's going to have is this compressed lower back injury that we used to see in Indy car all the time. And it's just, it's scary. And I just, there's 2013 for a sprint cut.
Starting point is 00:13:40 out racetrack not to have every single inch of concrete walls in bears. That was a hard hit yesterday, no doubt. Ryan McGee, join us here on the Dale Jr. download. And, okay, two thoughts about smoke that you just mentioned. One is you think you might regret what he said about blocking because, I mean, certainly everybody's going to point to Talladego when he wrecked the whole field last year when he was blocking. But what about what he said about Lugano's character, about who Lugano is, saying he's a
Starting point is 00:14:08 rich kid and basically he didn't earn it like some of us others did. Do other people in the garage feel like that? That have kind of been going at each other. And it's the group that felt like they had to do it the hard way. And then it's the group that people think were handed everything on a silver platter. Dale Jr. is all about this argument because he's on both sides. You know, people always felt like unfair. But I go down a Myrtle Beach Speedway and people would be saying, oh, there, you know, there you go.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Del Earnhardt Jr., you know how he got his ride. But then what the people who knew the truth knew, and he had to work on his own cars. had to go change oil to do the show. He had to work his tail off. And thought he was getting fired after every race. Yeah. There's always kind of been these warring factions in the sport. And the guys that felt like they had to come into the ones that they think didn't. And so, Joe Ligano. All right, last thing, McGee, going to the paper clip next, Dale Jr., you mentioned the points leader by 12 points, and he's going to, what I would argue, is one of his best tracks. I know he doesn't have a win there, but man, he has come awfully close. He's led
Starting point is 00:15:53 laps there. He's been in the top five. It feels like just about every time they've gone there. recently. Our rankings for freestpan.com of of which listen, this is the stretch of the year I'll
Starting point is 00:16:20 always say. Give me the middle of the spring and then give me that late summer early fall run and those are those are his
Starting point is 00:16:27 like if he's going to get his wins that's one it's going to believe that he can't go to Martin's though win that
Starting point is 00:16:36 right. Mike did who picked him to win Martinsville before the season started do you remember?
Starting point is 00:16:40 You did. Oh okay I just I didn't I don't know if you've called that hasn't won there yet Taylor well it's
Starting point is 00:16:44 might change that's a good you pick him to win every week. Yeah, it should be great. McGee, excellent perspective from you. I really appreciate you as always, my friend.
Starting point is 00:16:56 I'll come get you and we'll come up here together next time. Folks, a reminder, there are four flavors of Dale Jr. Potato chips, crispy, original, zesty halapeno, creole and green onion, and Carolina barbecue. All right. I'm ready for some. You need to go to Dale Jr. Foods.com right now to get yours today. It's time for reaction theater.
Starting point is 00:17:17 get any voicemails this week? Many. We did? Many voicemails. When you say many, like hundreds? Yeah, got into three figures. And you know what, folks? Keep them coming.
Starting point is 00:17:27 Okay. It's great. All right. Well, let's hear what we got this week. Interior monologue. Lapt 20 left to go. What did the Lattat do to that car? Three laps left to go.
Starting point is 00:17:40 What is Lattar due to that car? What's next? Hello, I'd like to place an order for this. Steve and Littart motivational tapes. Thank you. It's funny, he's joking, but there probably is motivational tape coming somewhere around the corner at Steve Littart.com. I would think so.
Starting point is 00:17:57 He's already doing speaking engagements. Seriously, why wouldn't he? Yeah. Next. That was the only bad news if you're part of Junior Nation yesterday is you get this crazy wreck, you know, with Lugano and Hamlin. Dale Jr.'s flying through the field of the 18-1. Is it okay that I like, Kyle?
Starting point is 00:18:21 No? No. Okay. All right. Dustin's over shaking his hit no, too. Okay. Dustin's going to edit that out. All right. Next. Junior. Junior. Is that Slingblade? I don't know who it is. Oh, it's a little freak me out a little bit. Junior. Who's next? Hey, junior. Greatly, Tinnick. I hope you do many more physicians like that. You know, we should keep in touch. Call me back.
Starting point is 00:18:57 I like they left their number. Yeah, phone a friend. That's good. Dale Jr. will write that down. Who's next? From having a car that didn't want to cooperate, the second place. I fucking love the 88 team. Me too.
Starting point is 00:19:13 I don't even know what else to say about it. She pretty much nailed it, didn't she? What's next? Anybody who thinks Dale Jr. doesn't give a crap about finishing races needs to watch the last restart of this race. until the end of the race. Unflippin' believable. It was.
Starting point is 00:19:33 Definitely. Yeah, but, you know, she's got a point. There have people that have criticized Dale, you know, that he doesn't care or whatever. And it's just such hogwash. It's unbelievable that people would ever say that. But some do, and she's addressing it. She did. What's next?
Starting point is 00:19:50 I fell in love with NASCAR about 20 years ago because I liked fun, hard racing, a little bit of rivalry. What we have seen this season are guys using their cars as weapons, jackasses, fighting each other on Twitter like little babies, and a grown man throwing punches on a child because he got blocked on a restart. So I want to know what your thoughts are on what's happened in that part because for me as a fan, I'm pretty turned off by the childish behavior. I sort of like people acting like immature little child. I thought her voice was going to be like, don't you love it? Yeah. And I'm like, oh, wait, she doesn't like it.
Starting point is 00:20:24 I'm not saying that I want my family to act like that or that I want to act like that, but I love it when you act like that. Yeah, I love to be entertained. What's next? Recovery by Dale Junior Day of the day finishing his second, and Dale Jr. It sure tastes a lot better better than better. You better believe they do.
Starting point is 00:20:45 He's opening a bag there. That's right. That was good. Good sponsor. I wonder what flavor that was. It sounded like zesty. It did. It sounded zesty.
Starting point is 00:20:52 I was kind of thinking I heard some Creole. in there. What's next? Holy! Tony Stewart, you're a f***ing idiot. Tula Gano did nothing wrong. You did the same thing
Starting point is 00:21:04 last year at Talladega. Then he had with Cone. I'm sorry he got hurt, but that was a good fucking race. Happy Sunday. Oh, goodness. What's next?
Starting point is 00:21:16 My name's Tony Stewart. I'm a three-time Winston Cup or Sprint Cup champion in the NASCAR series. Don't block me. I'm going to cry about it if you block me. But I'm going to
Starting point is 00:21:26 block you. For sure. What's next? All right. Been a fan for 30 years, man. I remember you the first win in the damn Bush Grand National race where you said that your dad could keep all the money winning was the most fun. All right, so what has happened to you? It sounds like you don't have fun anymore. You're just out there racing run around in circles. Come on, man. Win a race.
Starting point is 00:21:53 a race. So you tell me that was like lap 180 or something. I don't know, man. Tough crowd. Yeah, that's a tough crowd. What's next? Joey Lugano throws punches like somebody who made the second round of auditions at the Bad Girls Club. What the hell was that, son? You got to lead with your knuckles. Your knuckles. Throwing water bottles. Or water bottles. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:15 You always leave with a water bottle. McGee's right. I mean, you got to give him credit for going up to Hamlin last week, not bowing down to him, you know, racing him hard there at the finish. You can't throw water bottle. man. Although that sounded like Dan the junior fan. If Dan is our expert on fighting, then what does this world come to, right? Who knows? What's next?
Starting point is 00:22:35 It was the high-long last week, the 29 hitting us this week. What? T.J. did a great job yesterday. Yeah. T.J. really did a great job yesterday. But, you know, this guy's one of T. T.J.'s clearly. He's made our reaction theater two weeks in a row.
Starting point is 00:22:57 Come on, T. But, no, really. T. T.J. did a great job yesterday, spotting. and getting him through traffic there. What's next? I've seen since I've seen two rednecks chasing road deal. That's actually a true story when I was in Louisiana, but it was the best race I've seen quite a long time.
Starting point is 00:23:18 It was. I'm from about an hour away from Louisiana. You can chase a lot of roadkill down there. What's next? So straight up, I'm not a Lagano fan, but Tony Stewart must have amnesia. Was it not him that wrecked the whole? entire field at Talladega blocking for the win.
Starting point is 00:23:37 I'm wondering he doesn't have a girl and has to live with a cat. Oh, my goodness. No, he didn't. That one might be the winner. Yeah, it might be our winner. I think it is. Man, I love reaction. Theater.
Starting point is 00:23:51 It's good stuff. And I want you guys to know, write this number down. It's 1-855-740-190-2. That's the number to our voicemail line. Say it again. Slower. 855-7-40-1-190-1. 9902.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Yelling and screaming and cussing during a show. I wonder, I feel like I've done that somewhere before. The drive on AM 16. Let's throw the white flag. There you go, Woody White Flag. All right, guys, who wants to meet Dale Jr. And go to Talladega? Taylor, are you?
Starting point is 00:24:22 Real tight. Great Clips wants to send you. If you live in the U.S. text Dale, it's DALE, to 47328 for a chance to win. Now, if you live in Canada, because we have gone international, I know. Text Dale. to 7777.7. That's five. That's five. Sevens. Okay. Yeah. This week, Junior has nothing on his calendar because his employees are so good to him by keeping off weeks clear of work.
Starting point is 00:24:44 There will be back to action in two weeks when the NASCAR Sprint Cup series resumes at Martinsville Speedway. Paperclip. That being said. You know who isn't taking a week off? Who? Dale Jr. Download podcast, baby. Oh, really? We will have a show next Monday. Okay. Good. And it will be riveting content, Taylor. I'm sure. You will not want to miss it. I'm fired up about that.
Starting point is 00:25:05 And that's it. Do you got anything else you want to say? No, man. Just a shout out to Gracie. Points leader, baby, going into Easter. Cadbury eggs taste so much better as a point leader. Remember to go to Dale Jr.foods.com to buy your Dale Jr. potato chips for Mike Davis, Ryan McGee, Dustin Lee.
Starting point is 00:25:22 I'm Taylor. This has been the Dale Jr. download. Thanks for listening to Dirty Mo Radio.
