Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas.
Starting point is 00:01:06 And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season, and I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was harmed. You just understood. That's how personal it got. Wow.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Then after that game 7, Mark keep coming to him. He's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Deanna Maria Riva, and on my new podcast, How Hard Can It Be? I call on my Gen X squad from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate Midlife's most fantastic BS.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Unfiltered conversations from night sweats to futas to scheduling sex. Wait, what sex? Is it just me or does every woman my age want to look at Pinterest instead of having sex sometimes? They say we can't polish a turn, but we're sure going to try. So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter. Listen to How Hard Can It Be with Deanna Maria Riva on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The HARD podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Find your local station for the Hurt at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sportsport. Sports Radio. Ah, here we go on a Monday. It is great to have you in. Colin right, calling wrong in a second. Lyme from Los Angeles. This is the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening.
Starting point is 00:02:46 Fox Sports Radio, Iheart Radio, and FS1. Just looking at the, hold on. I was just looking at the playoffs for next week. Rams at the Packers, that's the early one. That's on Fox. Bay. Ravens at the Bills Saturday night. That's interesting. Two of my favorite teams in the NFL. Sunday morning, Browns at the Chiefs. I don't know. Kansas City did not look good at all in December. It's all I'm saying. You get these rookie quarterbacks on rookie quarterback deals.
Starting point is 00:03:21 You can surround them with a lot of good players. Cleveland looked pretty good to me. Watch out Kansas City. And then the Buccaneers at the Saints. I think it'll be close. because it was two awful games for Brady. My guess is now, you know, Antonio Brown's starting to work. But this is so much fun. Joel Cloud will be joining us later this hour. Poor Joy is from Pittsburgh and Miami. So all year, there was a point when the Steelers were 11 and 0,
Starting point is 00:03:48 and Tua was on a winning streak, and look how it ended for you. I know. We had a great regular season, if that counts for something. Something. I'm not surprised about what happened. I mean, look, I didn't think it was going to be that bad, But it was a colossal meltdown. But the Browns had a chance to win that game.
Starting point is 00:04:04 It's division rival. Brown's playing great. Steelers not playing great. Yeah. You're going to be honest with yourself. Yeah. By the way, we always do calling right, calling wrong. Now we have a sponsor.
Starting point is 00:04:14 We're brought to you by Jersey Mikes. I got one of those by my house. At Jersey Mikes app is short for appetizing. 25% on your order. With the code Mikes 25, only when you use the Jersey Mikes app. That's Mike 25. to save 25% in January 14th through the 17th only. Jersey mics be a sub above.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Colin Wright. Colin wrong. Here we go. Where Colin was right? What do you know? Lamar Jackson won a playoff game. I never bought into this. He can't win coming from behind.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Folks, he's a good enough passer when you're the fastest human being that's ever played the game. He had one really, really bad throw in that game. Tom Brady's had pick sixes in the Super Bowl. But he completed 70%. He's now won 81% of his NFL games. Bill Parcell is one of the three or four best coaches of my life is won 58%. Just because it doesn't look like we're used to.
Starting point is 00:05:11 If you can run like that, then you don't have to be Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rogers from the pocket. We liked Lamar. We said, this is a story that doesn't exist. He'll be fine in the playoffs. Just let him play a few more games. where Colin was wrong. Never trust my Blazing Five
Starting point is 00:05:31 playoff picks. I said the only game I really liked. I loved the Rams to upset Seattle and I did like the Steelers. We were one, three and one. Yeah, not great. There you go. Where Colin was right. Tom Brady has officially
Starting point is 00:05:49 as predicted transformed not only the Buccaneers team but the culture. Played really well on the road in a playoff game. By the way, we said he's going to be choppy in September and October. New playbook, new city, move your family. Bruce Ariens is a different kind of coach than Belichick.
Starting point is 00:06:09 But since the by, we said after Thanksgiving, offense will carry this franchise. Since the by, they're 5 and 0. Since the buy, he leads the NFL in touchdowns. The offense is now clicking. He was the one old quarterback that did not look old this weekend. where Colin was wrong. I do not like backwards, hat quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:06:32 and one guy in particular is now taunting me. Here's Baker Mayfield after his win. What does it say about this team just to be able to kind of slough off everything that you dealt with all week and to be able to do this? Hold on one quick second. He's playing with me.
Starting point is 00:06:51 I'm okay. You won this weekend, Baker. I still despise backward hat quarterbacks, but you deserve the credit. You played great congratulations. Where Colin was right? When the Steelers were 11 and 0, I said, all right, they're not a Super Bowl team. They can't run the ball and they're sloppy. Joy, what were they last night?
Starting point is 00:07:08 They couldn't run the ball and they were sloppy. This is what they were. And by the way, I don't buy any of these second half yards. That thing was done. Cleveland was off defensively, just letting them pick up yards. Mike Tomlin's teams have always been big on emotion, and I like emotion, but they're often low on details. They're one in five since their 11-0 start, and I just didn't buy into them. I don't think, and this is what worries me a little bit about Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:07:35 It worries me if you can't run the ball when you have to run the ball. It's one thing if you're doing it on draws and traps. But sometimes you need three yards, and you've got to pick up three yards, and Pittsburgh couldn't, and it haven't been able to for months. It does concern me a little bit about Buffalo. where Colin was wrong. So I said if the Seahawks get healthy at running back, they're going to explode.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Actually, the opposite happened. They got healthier at running back, and their offense went into the tank. Russell Wilson was horrible in his last four games. Completed 56% of his throws with an 83-passer rating. It's almost, I told a friend this weekend, is it a personal thing? It's hard to explain.
Starting point is 00:08:18 I mean, the whole year we're like, Oh, we've seen Seattle. If they're running backs get healthy and Russ can play, play action football, they're just really hard to stop. They are a mess. Now, some of it is they need to draft offensive linemen. They're very good at left tackle, have a decent young right guard. Then it's pretty sketchy. But I thought once they got healthy, they'd roll.
Starting point is 00:08:41 They went backwards in the last five games. Where Colin was right? I said, why can't we say Josh Allen and Aaron? Rogers are neck and neck and the MVP. Did you watch Buffalo this weekend? Their running game is totally dependent on Josh Allen. He had more rushing yards than their top two running backs combined. That to me is the definition of valuable.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Patrick Mahomes may be more talented. I don't know if he is, but I think Kansas City isn't absolutely utterly reliant on Patrick Mahomes for their running game. I mean, this was even more. reliant than Green Bay is with Aaron Rogers. They do not win that game without Josh Allen. They don't win that game because the Colts had the better run game, the better align, the better defense, an equal head coach, and momentum.
Starting point is 00:09:32 They won that game for one reason, Josh Allen. So, again, I don't know why there's so much pushback on this MVP talk. You tell me outside of Rogers who's close to that valuable to their franchise. where Colin was wrong. I didn't love when Tampa Bay signed Antonio Brown. I'm like, do you need another receiver? It's a little crowded around these parts anyway, a wide receiver. He's actually played pretty well.
Starting point is 00:10:02 He's got five touchdowns, one receiving touchdown in each of his last four games. Mike Evans is more the volume target. Antonio Brown is the always open target, but he's a different body type than Mike Evans or Chris Godwin or Gromker Cameron Bray. he's been quiet, he's been focused. I thought it was like duplicating what they had and it was already sort of crowded for Brady. He's been a nice addition.
Starting point is 00:10:28 And you just kind of, you know, Evans is their volume guy. Antonio Brown is their open guy. Where Colin was right. Mitch Trubesky faced a good defense in the playoffs. And they scored nine points. In the last two playoff games, the Bears have scored 12 points per game on average. Listen, it's not all on Mitch, okay, but at some point, you know, you expect me to watch something and then have different opinions on it.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Not all games in the NFL are equal. And so, Trubisky can beat Jacksonville and he can beat Detroit and he can have these moments. But a franchise quarterback's got to be able to go to New Orleans and go to Green Bay. Look, the last two weeks, he just can't convert third downs. And again, I don't love all their own. offensive pieces, but Alan Robinson's a stud, and David Montgomery's very good, and Matt Nagy's an offensive guy, and it's not a bad offensive line. They've got a rookie tight end from Notre Dame I really like. It's not like they're out of talent. It's not like they have none, but in the end,
Starting point is 00:11:32 this is kind of what I say. Where's the it? What is he great at? Well, he can run well, not compared to Josh Allen or Lamar Jack. Well, his arm is average to below average. You got to give me some it. if I'm going to spend $25 to $35 million a year on you at quarterback. That game just stayed ugly all night long. New Orleans is, you know, it's interesting. Philip Rivers, Big Ben, Drew Breeze. Breeze is leaving. Rivers probably is leaving.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Big Ben, to me, should leave. But what's really the fascinating part is we're going to 17 games next year, reportedly. that is a long. You start in the summer, you end in the winter. Like we're spanning seasons. Summer, fall, winter. You're asking a lot of your body. And now you ask your veteran quarterback to play at least one preseason game.
Starting point is 00:12:32 And, I mean, I just thought Ben moved terribly last night. He looked old. He looked tired. And I think unless you're an outlier, Brady with his health, I just think that's the reality of old quarterbacks. That's what you look like after 17 weeks. And for the record, last two years, Breeze has had breaks. He's had a month-long break, and he still doesn't quite feel like he has it.
Starting point is 00:12:54 It's not a knock. It's like the late Kobe Bryant. He scored 60 on his final game. LeBron can still be a great defender in small snippets. Rajan Rondo, really good. Eight minutes a night in the finals. But you're not getting 80 games out of Rajan Rondo at this point. Like you, these seasons now are just getting longer and longer and more demanding.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Trent Delford's around the corner. Joel clap this hour as well. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:13:38 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:14:01 A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
Starting point is 00:14:17 And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health,
Starting point is 00:14:36 purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be.
Starting point is 00:14:52 Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Tolodano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the
Starting point is 00:15:08 Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series
Starting point is 00:15:30 because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us a lot. us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing.
Starting point is 00:15:48 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. American soccer is about to explode.
Starting point is 00:16:11 The World Cup is coming. Ramers sending on to Ernie Stewart the chip. I'm Tad Ramos. I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, inside American soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about Balagan. I'm not worried about McKinney.
Starting point is 00:16:32 My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this one. World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals.
Starting point is 00:16:52 The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us. Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tab Ramos on the IHeart Radio app, Apple podcast, wherever you get your podcast. Player of the Year candidate James Book Knight leads Yukon against Charlie Moore and DePaul tonight at 6 Eastern 3 Pacific only on FS1. in the Fox Sports app. All right, big games tonight.
Starting point is 00:17:22 Big games next weekend. Let's go and talk to Trent Dilfer, who is joining us now as Super Bowl champ, a decade and a half of the NFL. So I don't like to overreact, but I do think seasons are getting longer. We're asking more of quarterbacks, summer, fall, winter, 17 games now.
Starting point is 00:17:40 And I watch these old quarterbacks, and how they treated their body tells you a lot about how they look when they're 40 years old. And it's not a shot at Ben. But he camps. He drinks some beer. He'll do an occasional yoga pretty legendarily.
Starting point is 00:17:55 You know, his body is not a temple. And I watched him last night. And I watched him at the end of the year. And I'm like, he's aging like a guy would age who played hard. It feels like it's time to move off Ben. That's what it feels like to me. You? I don't think it's a move off or keep with him.
Starting point is 00:18:16 answer. I think it's a if answer. What I mean by that is there's a lot of ifs that need to happen in Pittsburgh for Ben to be sustained his success and get them back to the promised land. If they change this offense, number one, if they get an inline tight end. They have to invest in either drafting one and developing them immediately, but most likely finding one or two in free agency, an inline tied end that can secure the edge in the run game so they can run the football. They got to get rid of some of these receivers, to be honest with you. They found Claypool. I think he's going to be an alpha perimeter guy for a long time, but they need to kind of go from here to their offensively. And if they do that,
Starting point is 00:19:03 and if Ben, if Ben buys into trying to find the fountain of youth like Drew Breeze has, like Tom Brady has, these older guys have where they, really their offseason program starts today and they take better care of their bodies. If all those things happen, I wouldn't get rid of Ben because he's a Hall of Fame quarterback. He's always going to give you a chance to come back in a game. He's a hero in the city. He's the moral authority in the locker room. There's a lot of great things that come with Ben Rothesberger.
Starting point is 00:19:31 If they do these other simple changes, I think he's the guy. If they don't, if they don't make those moves, then yes, I think it's time to move on. You know, I said earlier it's not a shot at anybody for Cleveland, but I thought Kevin Stiff's He wasn't there and actually won last night. When parents raised their kids the right way, mom and dad can leave for the weekend and the kids don't burn the house down. Instead, you come back and the kids clean the house. It's cleaner than, and you're like, we did a good job as parents.
Starting point is 00:20:03 Stefansky's not there. There was every reason for them to be man overboard. They were missing their best offensive linemen. They lost their play caller. They're on the road against Pittsburgh. And I watched them and I thought, oh, my God. The Browns are the good. grown up on the field tonight.
Starting point is 00:20:18 They were, they were like mom and dad left for the weekend. They were, I was just blown away by their attack mode, their identity, their focus. That was my takeaway on the winner last night in that game. Your thoughts? Listen, you're pretty good at this radio TV thing. You've been pretty good for a long time. That might be your best analogy that I've never been. My wife and I were watching it this morning before I came on and I went, ding, ding, ding.
Starting point is 00:20:41 That's his best. You guys got to get that on a reel and show it all the time. you're so right with the parent analogy. If your house is in order, if you've created a great culture within your home, mom and dad can leave for the weekend and trust their teenage kids. It's brilliant. And it's exactly what Stefansky's done in Cleveland. And I'd point to this, and I'd heard that I don't know him very well, but I'd heard this about him.
Starting point is 00:21:06 He's a great teacher. He could teach anything. You can give him any subject and he could teach it. I think he's taught these Cleveland Browns, the whole. whole organization, not just the players now, how to be wise, how to be calm, how to be critical thinkers, how to take care of their business, how to love one another, why culture matters, and most importantly, why not to be foolish. There's so much foolishness in the league, in our world, and the Browns were famous for it. They played foolish football, they act foolish
Starting point is 00:21:41 off the field and he came in and in a short amount of time he taught them how to be adults, how to be calm, how to be wise and how they approached the game. And you watched it in the game. You saw with all the adversity they had gone through during the week, all the reasons they shouldn't have won that game, all the history that led into it. And they were stoic. They were calm. They took a very business approach to it. and they dominated. And I think it's such, it's such a great, um, example of how one person can come into a building and get everybody to buy into something bigger than themselves. And immediately, uh, a decade plus of just foolishness went away and we got to see it in one night. I mean,
Starting point is 00:22:31 the guy has done an incredible job and the buy in from everybody to, uh, have that temperament as an organization has been pretty incredible. You know, I watch, Buffalo this weekend. And you know, you've taught me this. You can have bad losses. And there are bad wins. You lose a great star. If Aaron Donald couldn't play this next week, that would be a bad win for the Rams. And then there are losses that you can take a step back and go, we grew. I worry about Buffalo. And I love them. But that running game, they're dependent on Josh Allen to throw it and to run it. I mean, Lamar Jackson may be a great weapon, but they have other running backs featured that can move the chains.
Starting point is 00:23:15 I wonder after watching them this weekend, is Buffalo two Josh Allen dependent? Well, I'm going to answer this question kind of sideways. One thing that stood out to me this weekend, super wildcard weekend, was outside the Bills Colts game, every game was won at the line of scrimmage. There was this distinct difference with line of scrimmage play. for the teams that won, except the Bills game. The Bills game, Josh and Stefan Diggs put on a Superman Kate, and they just overcame a lot of stuff and made these miraculous plays.
Starting point is 00:23:54 And it was incredible. It was like watching a video game happen in front of my eyes. But I get to that because I don't think the bills are great on the line of scrimmages. I think they're very, very talented, the skilled positions on offense, the skilled positions on defense. But I think in the trenches, the Bills, don't dominate. And I think this time of year, especially,
Starting point is 00:24:14 everybody says the quarterback rides you to the Super Bowl. I really think it's the line of scrimmage play that ride you to the Super Bowl. Now, the quarterback has to do some spectacular things usually, and that's why we have so many Hall of Fame quarterbacks that have won Super Bowls. But you can get there and win it if you're dominant in the trenches. And I don't think the bills are dominant in the trenches. And that's what I think you're seeing, is they can't run the football consistently because they're not dominant.
Starting point is 00:24:38 So they asked Josh to put on the Superman. which he does most of the time and he carries them. But I think there's a point in time where that's going to expire. And they're going to meet a team, a Kansas City Chiefs, that has as equally supermanish type quarterback, if not more so, and can be dominant at the line of scrimmage. And I think that's where this whole thing's going to balance out is when you have the great quarterback and the dominant line of scrimmage play
Starting point is 00:25:05 offensively and defensively. You know, it's interesting. You see this with great golfers. You see it with great shooters in basketball. I saw it with A-Rod. You just lose your confidence. And then you have to, whether it's the batting cage, whether it's in the NFL, Jared Goff has lost his confidence.
Starting point is 00:25:25 Now, now the injury probably makes it worse because now you physically don't know if you can trust your body. I just watch them and I watch the Rams and I think, oh, they've done so many things right. But they don't want him to throw. they are really hoping Cam Acres can carry them and I wonder can you go on the road against the Green Bay
Starting point is 00:25:47 and you don't feel great about your quarterback position, how do you turn it around? What do you do to engineer something that on a three and a half hour flight you land that plane and you feel good about your quarterback space? Yeah, I think there's two conversations going on here.
Starting point is 00:26:02 I agree that Jared is in a slump. He's struggling with his confidence. Then you compound it with him having to play with an injury that you really shouldn't have to play with. And then the future of the Rams. I think they're two separate conversations. I think you have to approach the rest of this playoff run with probably the best defense in all football,
Starting point is 00:26:21 very good offensive line, a very good running game. Primer guys, they're very active in the run game, and they're also good skill guys on offense. You know you have a lot there. So how do you go to Green Bay and beat a great Green Bay team with the MVP of the league Aaron Rogers, with a quarterback that's in a slump. I think it's doable.
Starting point is 00:26:42 It's obviously a great challenge, but it's doable. You have to lean on the things that make you great. You have to lean on your line of scrimmage play. You have to lean on your run game. I think you have to be really creative in the passing game. I thought how he said it perfect. I'd take Jared Goff with most quarterbacks when it's right, when the situation's right.
Starting point is 00:27:01 So I think maybe you add a man to protection when you're going to throw the ball. You force the play action game. You give them some freebies on. On first down, I think this is where it's counterintuitive sometimes. People say, well, your quarterback's struggling, we need to run it more. Well, no, I actually need to throw it more on early downs when they're easy completions. They can manufacture some easy completions for them. I love it Troy Aikman used to say, he said, even when I was rolling, I needed a hitch early in the game to get my confidence going.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Just let me throw a five-yard hitch. And as soon as I get that, I'm alleged in my own mind. I think you got to do that for Jared Gop. You got to help him get his confidence back by manufacturing. manufacturing some freebies early in the game. It's doable if Aaron Donald is healthy, which let's hope he is. And when you have that type of physicality up front, you have that type of coverage ability in the back end, you have that type of athleticism at linebacker, you can go on the road.
Starting point is 00:27:56 That is what travels in the NFL. You can take that on the road. And if your offense doesn't turn it over, your quarterback plays with some sense of confidence. And you can convert, you can capitalize. is what we used to say. If you can capitalize on three to four opportunities that your defense is going to give you, your special team is going to give you a field position,
Starting point is 00:28:15 you can go on the road and win. It's a harder formula to do it with, but you can do it. Trent, it's great seeing you, the Super Bowl champ, Lipscomb Academy head football coach. By the way, I just found out last week, you got beat in the state final by Jeff Fisher's son.
Starting point is 00:28:30 And he made... I'm well aware of that, Con, and I saw the interview, and I got no rebuttal. It's the line of scrimmage thing. They beat us up front. You got to fix it. All right.
Starting point is 00:28:39 Free agency in Nashville, Tennessee. Good seeing, you, Trent. Appreciate it. See you, brother. All right, tonight, Ohio State Alabama. We'll talk about that coming up as well. Don't go anywhere. Joy Taylor with the news.
Starting point is 00:28:51 No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. You know how I was thinking last night. We're in the playoffs. NFL playoffs. Preston is going to be NFL offseason. I love free agency.
Starting point is 00:29:04 And what an NFL off season it's going to be. Oh, my God. I love, I love, I've got to tell you something. We've said this about the NBA for years, where I like the NBA free agency as much as the regular season. I prefer the playoffs above everything. And I'll always love the NFL, the games better than the offseason. But in the last four or five years, these general managers joy, they're younger and they're trade-centric.
Starting point is 00:29:27 Way more aggressive. It's gotten very fun. Very fun. Well, Sean Watson is rumored to one out of Houston. And the Miami Dolphins have emerged as a potential dead. destination. Okay, so that's now, is that being documented? According to Chris Mortensen, okay, then it's real. Watson could waive his no trade clause if it means a move to Miami. He said Watson could play hardball with the Texans, but would consider a trade to the dolphins in
Starting point is 00:29:53 which Tua, along with other additional compensation, would go to Houston. I'd want, I'd want not only Tua, but I'd want two firsts. I want to, he's, I'm sorry. You would need the equivalent of, because they have Houston's first round pick this year. So you would need the equivalent of Tua and two first. So maybe it's like two seconds and a first. I'm not. Because you are giving Tua who is a top five quarterback. Fair, but unproven.
Starting point is 00:30:22 You're giving your first round pick, fifth overall, plus an additional first, plus two seconds. That seems fair. So Miami, if they make this move, they'll have the third pick. Right. Plus, because they're not going to get that back to Houston. So they'll have the third pick. They would trade Deshaun for Tua straight up with, additionally, with Tua with picks. Is what we're discussing right now.
Starting point is 00:30:44 Listen, if you're in a rebuilding mode and you're going to inherit this really expensive quarterback, those picks become starters. So they have to get their offensive line fixed. I'll tell you what. He solves almost every one of their issues. He solves all Miami's issues. Okay. So it would be the Tua.
Starting point is 00:31:02 the third and the 18th pick is what we're talking about. So they would have this year. For Watson. And the 18th overall. Who would get that? Houston. Houston. And they'd get rid of a huge salary. I think it's a great move for both teams actually.
Starting point is 00:31:21 And listen, I know golfans fans are currently in love with Tua and they think I'm overreacting. Let's move past that. I am a more rash. I'm a realist. And I'm very proud of that fact. That's just who I am. I like to look at both sides of the coin. and make my own decision.
Starting point is 00:31:36 I have watched a lot of Miami Dolphins football over the last 20 years. And let's be honest, outside of the offensive line, which Deshaun sort of solves most of those problems because of his feet. Miami's at the point now. This is the third year of the rebuild, right? They don't want too many picks because they're already a really young football team. They're young. The defense is set.
Starting point is 00:31:57 Defense is set. You need a couple, one or two more dynamic pieces on offense. is a very deep wide receiver draft. So you can get a good wide receiver in the second or third round this year. It's very deep. If I'm Miami, I'm for this. I think it's a great deal for Miami. I'm not sure it's a great deal.
Starting point is 00:32:14 And it's not a bad deal for Houston if Deshawn Watson is this upset with that. Yeah, I know. But I think it's a better deal for mine. I'll just go, I'll state this. Oh, no, it's definitely a better deal for Miami because there's a lot of unknowns that Houston's getting. And they also have a culture. So you just, it's microwave. I have a really good culture and a coach, and I just put it in a star.
Starting point is 00:32:35 It's like, that's going to work. No, it's a much better deal for Miami than it is for Houston. Yeah, Tua's got to change the culture. That's a huge task. Which Deshaun Watson wasn't able to do. So to me, if I'm Miami, I do it now. Well, I don't, this is, this is just in the talks. Like, Houston is the one that has all the leverage.
Starting point is 00:32:52 They're the ones that have to make this deal. But apparently Deshawn Watson was also not happy with the franchise's insensitivity to social justice. he's on a four-year $156 million contract through the 2025 season. So trading him would result in a cap charge of $21.6 million for the Texans for the 2021 season. But if you get all those picks, you're in a rebuild. You're not paying anything for two of them. So Doug Peterson's future in Philadelphia is in question after the controversial end to this season. Should be.
Starting point is 00:33:20 And he could be out if owner Jeffrey Lurie is not confident in Peterson's vision for the team going forward. Lurie reportedly has not been sold on how Peterson plans. to fix the offense and get the Eagles back to contender status. So the two are expected to meet again today after initial talks last week reportedly did not go well. So things are kind of up in the air for Philadelphia. They're 22, 25, and 1 since the Super Bowl win. I thought his judgment was, you know, there are all these stories leaked that Doug
Starting point is 00:33:50 didn't do it. It was the GM and the owner. But if the owner and GM are the ones that told you to pull out Jalen Hertz, then they'd give you a pass and rehire you. Right. I mean, they're not rehire you. They would just, you know. Then this story wouldn't exist.
Starting point is 00:34:02 This story wouldn't exist. So that tells me it was Peterson's call and it was a bad call. It's just a bad decision. It made no sense. Especially on standalone games. I still don't understand this. Jalen Hertz, you've already offended Carson Wentz. Your job as a quarterback coach and head coach is to get along with your emerging star quarterback.
Starting point is 00:34:21 You could have, you pulled him out of a winnable game. And it's like, if I was, and you could see Jalen Hertz body language, I would think, bruh. This is not like a bowl game where nobody really cares. We're in the Liberty Bowl. It's an NFL game I can win. Jalen Hertz could have had an offseason built on a great win over rival Washington. Your whole energy going against the offseason would be different. And Carson Wentz is expected to ask for a trade because of his relationship with Peterson deteriorating.
Starting point is 00:34:49 That's a mess. It's a pardly beyond repair. So the Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and defensive line coach Jim Tom Soule after one season with the team. Dallas's defense struggled all over. lot this season. Fifth most points and 10 most yards allowed per game this season. They also set a franchise record for the most points allowed with 473. They had the 28th ranked defense this season, 26th and run defense, 17th in tackling, 10th in pass rush, and 27th in past coverage.
Starting point is 00:35:16 So say that again. They gave up the most points in NFL history. No, no, no, in franchise record. Okay, franchise record. And by the way, that's in a division where it was all backup quarterbacks. Yep. What if they played an division? One of the worst seasons in NFC East, like, recent history. And they still gave up 500 points. 473, yeah. Franchise record.
Starting point is 00:35:35 Bad. But they made an aggressive decision. They didn't fire the head coach. They fired the coaches on the side of the ball that were struggling. They'll get Dak back next year. I thought it was a little overreactionary to talk about firing Mike McCarthy after one season, especially after losing DAC. I was on the fire McCarthy thing until the buy.
Starting point is 00:35:52 A couple weeks. Yeah. Then after the buy, they were like a grown-up team. Yeah. It takes time. Yeah. I enjoy it with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 00:36:00 And thanks for stopping by. The herd line news. So let me restate again because I'm kind of confusing myself. Miami gives up a bunch of picks and just gets Deshaun Watson. Houston gets a bunch of picks in Tua. I am way on the Miami side on that. I, at this point. It's a better deal for Miami right now.
Starting point is 00:36:19 But if Deshaun doesn't want to play in Houston, he can make things very uncomfortable. Plus, they still have to hire a new. coach. They haven't hired their head coach yet. I think that's a tough ass for Tua. Hey, go change the culture. Oh, by the way, the offensive line's not great. You've had career injuries. But why should it be on the quarterback to have to change the culture there? Well, it shouldn't have to be, but that's the reality. Like we tried to put that on Baker. Baker couldn't do it. Now Stefanski's there. It was on Stefanski's on the head coach. Oh, I totally agree, but they don't even have one. Yeah. It's not a good situation. Miami's ready to go. Miami's just like,
Starting point is 00:36:51 give us a star quarterback. Boom. All right. Confuse myself on that. for a second. Joel Clats around the corner. Bam, Ohio State tonight. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:37:28 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media.
Starting point is 00:37:50 Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes
Starting point is 00:38:08 of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream,

And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano and our podcast Point Game is about defining the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game.
Starting point is 00:38:53 His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall.
Starting point is 00:39:14 And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick.
Starting point is 00:39:34 Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. American soccer is about to explode. The World Cup is coming. Ramos sending on to earn a store at the chip. I'm Tad Ramos. I'm Tom Boe. On our podcast, Inside American Soccer, you'll get the real storylines. I'm not worried about Policic. I'm not worried about balligan. I'm not worried about McKinney.
Starting point is 00:40:09 My only concern is what happens in the back. The biggest decisions. If you're going to look at stats and numbers, he has no shot at making this World Cup team. And the truth about the U.S. national team. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if our team ends up in the quarterfinals or potentially a great run into the semifinals. The World Cup is almost here. Experience it all with us. Listen, Inside American Soccer with Tom Bogart and Tabramos
Starting point is 00:40:38 on the iHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your podcast. Don't waste any time. Fox Sports College Football Analyst and our friend, we argue, from time to time, with Joel Clatt, but it's all in good fun. And Joel Clout is joining us live, final college football game to wrap up this season. It's Bam, Ohio State. So let's start first with this. Justin Fields.
Starting point is 00:41:01 thought cemented his draft stock, not only beating Clemson, but being injured during the game, clearly in pain, overcoming it. Where is he at physically tonight? Do we know? Well, let's just say this. Like if he was 80% against Clemson, then boy, I hope he's 80% tonight, because he was brilliant even after that injury. I don't know exactly how he's going to be. I'm a little worried for him, to be honest with you, because I don't think people, realize how important your core is for a quarterback to develop the torque and the power necessary to throw the football like he's going to need to throw it tonight. And he did a marvelous job even after getting hit by Scalcy of throwing the ball down the field. I mean, that's as
Starting point is 00:41:46 well as he's throwing the ball down the field, Colin, in his career. That's as well of a game as, I mean, that's as good of a game as he's played in his career. He was, he did everything that I had questions about, if you're talking about from an NFL draft standpoint. He didn't hold the ball too long. He worked through his progression. He was great down the field. He made plays with his feet when he needed to. All of those things were brilliant. And based on the way that he played even after the hit, I would just assume that he's going to play well tonight, regardless of what physical condition he's in. But he's going to, I mean, he's got to be hurting a little bit, right? I mean, that hit was brutal. Do you think they should lean on field tonight or running back Trace
Starting point is 00:42:25 Sermon? Which way would you go? I think that they're going to do both. You know, they're the only team in college football that average 250 rushing yards and 250 passing yards over that that amount. So there's no reason that I think that they're not going to be or continue to be balanced. And the thing about it is that Trey and that running game, it's as good as any out there. And I think that it's gone a little bit under the radar. I don't know if it's been the amount of games or that fields kind of takes all the oxygen out of the room. But Ohio State is the number one power five rushing team in the country. People don't realize that. When I mention that to people that are like, no way. It's absolutely true. They're dominant in the run game.
Starting point is 00:43:01 And it's one of the reasons why they were so dominant against Clemson in that game is that they were able to be balanced and two-dimensional on offense. They're going to have to do that against Alabama tonight. I think they'll be able to. They've run it well against everybody. Yeah. They've run for over 200 yards against everybody, Colin. And I think that they'll do it again tonight. Is there been a moment this year where Alabama's offense, at least for a half, was sluggish? I mean, how do you slow it down? Yeah, I think that maybe you could say the first half of the Georgia game, they were sluggish at times. But boy, they are as explosive and talented as any offense that I can remember. And we're just coming off a year in which
Starting point is 00:43:38 LSU was as good of an offense as there has been in college football. There's never been a team ever in the history of our sport that have swept the offensive awards individually like Alabama has, the Unitas Award, the Bolitnikov Award, the Doak Walker Award, the Outland Trophy, the Heisman trophy. I mean, they've swept everything, and rightly so. They're that good. I would say, though, just keep this in your back pocket. Clemson actually had more yards after the catch over the course of the season than Alabama. Clemson was number one, Alabama's number two, and Clemson actually had more explosive plays during the course of the season. They had 81 to Alabama's 79, and Ohio State's defense actually played pretty well against Clemson, mainly because
Starting point is 00:44:24 they were able to get pressure. If they can get pressure on Mack Jones, they might be able to limit some of those explosive plays that have become the hallmark for Alabama's offense. I mean, obviously, there's, you know, 10 guys, 12 guys, 15 guys in this game that are going to get drafted, so we know that. It is interesting. I think Nick Saban has separated himself as the greatest coach in college football history. His energy is still really good. You know, it's just like when you're an athlete. Don't step away from the game. If somebody he's willing to pay a lot of money and you still love doing it. And I look at Saban and I think, where are we on the runway here?
Starting point is 00:45:02 How long does he keep doing it? That's a great question. You know, they did have an agreement, whether it was on paper or a handshake, with Steve Sarkesian to be the heir apparent. Okay, that was, that's true. And Steve took the Texas job and more power to him. And that's a job that it's hard to turn down in particular when you, think about trying to come in the footsteps of a guy like Nick Saban and the greatest run in the history of college football, which they're on currently.
Starting point is 00:45:32 But I think that you're right now without that successor, without that guy that you can just give the keys to the car like Lincoln Riley or Ryan Day or even Jimmy Lake at Washington, I think Nick might coach four or five, maybe even six more seasons until he can find that replacement and keep this on the rails for Alabama. He's the best football coach at this level that we've ever seen. Just hands down. You can look at Bud Wilkinson. He didn't have the run of success like this. Tom Osborne never had this. Even Bobby Bowden's at Florida State was not this dominant.
Starting point is 00:46:05 Osborne even through the 90s was not this dominant. This has been the most dominant run in college football history. He's going for his seventh national title tonight. And that would just cement his legacy as the greatest coach of all time. Finally, who do you like and why? Well, first of all, and I'm sorry, I buried the last. lead on this, but I should have just done the entire interview. Speaking of who do I like, I should have done the interview with my hat backwards the entire time. So obnoxious.
Starting point is 00:46:33 I don't think it's obnoxious at all. In fact, I thought he played very well. Baker, congratulations on your first playoff win. There were a lot of doubters out there, a lot of doubters. Maybe one's on the screen right now. Maybe he's not, but you went out there and proved him wrong. And even in Cleveland, you were able to succeed because you're a winner. You're a winner. Maybe it's because of your attitude, too. It's the hat backwards. mentality. I do like Alabama tonight to get to your question, Colin. I like them by three in a really high scoring affair. Forty-five, 42, Alabama gets the national championship. Yeah. By the way, I'm not petty. I'm very happy for Baker Mayfield. I still despise the backwards
Starting point is 00:47:16 hat thing, but they're outliers. Guys hit hole in ones in golf tournaments. Just not, yeah, it doesn't look great. I mean, look at you. I mean, I think I look great. You know what you're... You know what you look like... What's that? You look like your parents refused to give you an extra $20 bill because you're irresponsible with it is what you look like.
Starting point is 00:47:38 That's what you look like. All right, Joel Clatt. Good to see you, buddy. Have a good one, bud. Yeah, I think it's going to be high scoring. I don't know if it's close, but I think it's high scoring. At this point, I just want close games. Listen, it's better for college football.
Starting point is 00:47:51 I'll just tell you. Ohio State wins. And I love college football. So Ohio State beating Clemson is better for the sport. Ohio State winning tonight's better for the sport. There's no question. Again, I'm not anti-Alabama. I'm anti-anything that bores the majority of people in a sport I love.
Starting point is 00:48:11 Like, it's good in baseball. It's actually good for the sport when the Yankees and Dodgers win. It really is because nobody in baseball can dominate forever. So if the Yankees win a World Series every third or fourth year, it's good for the sport. Same with the Dodgers. That was good for the sport. And I think it's good if Alabama's good.
Starting point is 00:48:27 But to just keep stacking these up one after another, there feels like an imbalance. It's a sport that lacks hope. Yes. And so it's like, you know, Ohio State winning tonight. I don't even know. What would Ohio do? They couldn't contain themselves.
Starting point is 00:48:44 Seriously, if the Buckeyes win tonight. It's a great weekend for Ohio. I don't even know what sports talk radio sounds like in Cleveland today. I'm not sure I want to know what it sounds like. I don't want to listen today. But if the Buckeyes win tonight, just ratings through the roof in Ohio. Go the Extra Mile, your very own, upfitted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, win Fox Sports Radio's ultimate tailgate rig sweepstakes.
