Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:01:10 This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played with. And just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to. Listen and learn the hard way on the AHA radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 is big to me.
Starting point is 00:01:40 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, it is a Tuesday. I can field major trades in the air. Live in Los Angeles. It's the herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Fox Sports Radio, Iheart Radio, FS1. A lot of things percolating today in this magic shelf.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Magic shelf. a good line. I'm stealing that. I've got a lot of things going on today. I am going to unveil magical solutions and theories today. Listen, as long as it involves Deshawn Watson getting to Miami, I'm here for it. Love your hair today. Can I say that? Thank you. We're friends. Yes, I can say that. Your hair looks great also. Thank you. Right back at you, Colin. All right. I want to start with this. So, listen, we're all sitting here. We got Rogers and Brady. We're all jacked up for that. And then we got Mahomes and Josh Allen. all actually terrified, that won't happen.
Starting point is 00:03:29 I got nothing against Chad Henney. I thought that was a magical, amazing moment for Chad Henney. It really made me happy. The more I thought about it, I'm like, God, your kids are there, tell them that story, play of the year in the NFL, Chad Henney. You couldn't write that thing. But we want Mahomes against Josh Allen, right? Like that's reasonable.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And I'm sitting here this morning thinking, if I'm the NFL, Patrick Mahomes is going through protocol. I find the day Patrick Mahomes can play, that's when we play. Why not? The NBA, to get Zion into the bubble, jerry-rig their playoff format. The NFL moved games all year long. By the way, the last time these two teams played, they played in a Monday afternoon because of COVID. After this game, you got two weeks to the Super Bowl. Who cares when you play it? Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, who cares? What you want is the best game possible and the best scenario possible. What we have learned in 2020 and 2021, everything's adjustable. The Masters, the most rigid sporting event in America, the Masters. Yeah, we're just going to move it six months to
Starting point is 00:04:44 November. This is what you do. Mission Impossible 6. Tom Cruise breaks an ankle. They delay production. Got a Beyonce ticket, Jay-Z. They're six. What do you see, a backup? No, they cancel it. You go online, they cancel it. They give you another ticket for when they perform. Let's not kid ourselves here. Mahalms, Alan Rogers, Brady.
Starting point is 00:05:06 Let's not screw this thing up. The pandemic has shown us everything is adjustable. Everything is possible. Do you know why the Super Bowl, they don't play it? I mean, if it was fair, you would play it some years in Buffalo and some years in cold weather and some years in Seattle. and you know where they play at the Super Bowl warm weather overwhelmingly. Why?
Starting point is 00:05:28 Because that will give you the best case scenario for a good game. That it won't be snowing. There won't be a blizzard. I mean, they've put it in small, tiny towns in the warm part of the country. Jacksonville. They had one hotel. Why? Because they didn't want to put it in Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:05:47 Listen, there's a reason bowl games and the Super Bowl. when they have a choice, move games to warmer weather. Best possible scenario, end of the year, for a great matchup. Let's not screw it up. It would be a great advantage if the NFL played Super Bowls in Seattle where it's blowing sideways and Aaron Rogers can't throw the ball and he faces more of a running quarterback. But you don't want to do that. You want to make it available for all the great players to be at their best.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Well, we've got a great player. He's not available potentially Sunday. All right, let's play it Monday. You won't watch? We have football games all year on Monday. You won't watch. Politics, entertainment, sports. It's 2021.
Starting point is 00:06:34 You do whatever you got to do, move whatever you have to move to make it right. We have watched stubborn leagues and stubborn people go down in flames this year. The people that have excelled, the people that have excelled, the leagues, the sports that have excelled. UFC moved to Dubai. They went and bought an island. They're like, we're just going to make it work. Didn't make the fight any less.
Starting point is 00:07:03 I remember watching those fights on a fight island. Those were unbelievable. You just make stuff work. NFL, I figure out a way to get my homes in that game. I don't feel bad about it for a second. In fact, if I was Buffalo, what a hollow victory getting to the Super Bowl. not facing Patrick Mahomes. All right.
Starting point is 00:07:23 This story, we are on the brink of something big. According to the latest reports, Deshaun Watson, one of your five, ten best quarterbacks in the league, five, six, whatever, he's great. Wants out of Houston. Wants out of Houston. And the reports this morning are he may force a trade. So let's just think about this. There are two ways in the NFL to rebuild.
Starting point is 00:07:46 You can get a star quarterback. or you can find the right coach and slowly methodically build a roster. That's what the dolphins have done. And the dolphins have done it almost step by step perfectly. They've made no mistakes. Two years in, still haven't made the playoffs. The New York Jets make a move and get to Sean Watson. This move is perfect.
Starting point is 00:08:12 I'll tell you why. The Jets have five first round picks because of the Jamal Adams trade. They could give four of them away. That's what Houston wants. They got so many first round picks. It's essentially you'd be trading Jamal Adams and a first round picker or two for Deshawn Watson. If I'd have told you that a year ago, you'd be like, wait a minute, I get Deshaun Watson
Starting point is 00:08:33 for a safety and a couple of picks. You'd be like, yeah, I'd take that. That's a crazy. And I like Jamal Adams. You would take that in a second. That's what it would be. First of all, what is Houston need? Because Deshaun Watson wants out.
Starting point is 00:08:44 He wants out. They have to get out of cap hell. This would help. They need massive draft picks. This would help. And they still need a quarterback. So you could take Darnold or you could take Justin Fields. That would also, by the way, make Eric B. Enemy a perfect choice.
Starting point is 00:09:00 What has he been working with for two years? Three years. A young quarterback who can run a little bit with a big arm. What do the Jets need? They got to get better a quarterback. I mean, you can draft Justin Fields, but your new head coach is Robert Sala, who's a defensive guy. Oh, by the way, Deshaun Watson said the two coaches he wanted to work with,
Starting point is 00:09:23 Robert Sala, Eric Bienemy. Robert Sala, by the way, was just in San Francisco. He saw what it's like to have issues at quarterback. He watched Kyle Shanan, his boss, one of the best coaches ever, failed to win Sunday after Sunday after Sunday after Sunday. Why? Because he didn't have the quarterback. Sala, given the option of Darnel, Justin Fields, or Dishon Watson.
Starting point is 00:09:47 What do you think he's taking? Deshawn Watson, the options of coaches he would like, Houston didn't hire Sala, and it doesn't look like they'll hire BNamy, he would take Robert Sala. This move sounds like a move made in heaven. There's two ways in this league to get better. Find a star quarterback or get the coach and rebuild. And the Dolphins have done that, and they're still not a playoff team. And with Buffalo's greatness, New England maybe reboots,
Starting point is 00:10:14 Miami's not going away. Here's the other thing to think about. The other place to Sean Watson is rumored to go is Miami. If you're the Jets, you don't act in the next two days. Miami gets up. The other place where I think he's a perfect fit is New England. And by the way, New England has all these people down in Houston that used to be patriots. So you know if it comes down to draft picks, Houston will do business with New England over the Jets.
Starting point is 00:10:46 You made the Jamal Adams deal to get picks. You're going to hoard them? The bottom line, when the Jets made that move with Jamal Adams to get the picks, those picks were secured to get a star, either in the draft or through a trade. You can go through the draft or you can get Deshawn Watson. He wants out. Reportedly now he's going to demand to be traded. The three teams, everybody's looking at, New England, Jets, Miami, New York make a move. You have five first round picks next three years.
Starting point is 00:11:17 If you got to use five, do it. This makes a ton of sense. I'm just engineering stuff that may never happen, but it seems like if I'm the Jets, I can go Darnold, I can cross my fingers with Justin Fields, or I can get a star tomorrow as Buffalo and Miami are on the precipice of being good for a decade. You better get it right at quarterback. A story in the NFL that is
Starting point is 00:11:44 I'm not sure if it's shocking or it's weird, but I'll have that coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast, Superhuman, documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:12:20 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me. Clever Taylor the 4th.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill?
Starting point is 00:13:43 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we picket here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you're just so you're not. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct.
Starting point is 00:14:09 So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Starting point is 00:14:25 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite. favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:14:48 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth,
Starting point is 00:15:10 or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app.
Starting point is 00:15:30 Search, learn the hard way, and listen now. tired of cooking at home order Jersey mics through their app no contact delivery no contact at the door pick up jersey mics be a sub above
Starting point is 00:15:41 we love them are they delivering tomorrow was that just a one-time deal or do we tomorrow we get them that's good that's nice
Starting point is 00:15:50 you both literally inhaled them they're so good to do olive oil on the bread I know it's I get it once week
Starting point is 00:15:57 yes before they're bringing to us once a week so the Jets were the last, they were last in everything in the NFL this year offensively. With offensive guru Adam Gase. This story's weird. Former Jets coach Adam Gase is being interviewed for the Seattle offensive coordinator job.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Apparently proof Pete Carroll really does hate Russell Wilson. I'm sure Jamal Adams just loves this. I'm sure he's just thrilled with this. Listen, at some point, there's proof of stuff. You know, resumes, you make a lot of mistakes in life, that's who you are. There are multiple offensive players who got significantly better the moment they left Adam Gase. Ryan Tannehill was a non-starter. Then he got Arthur Smith, a new coordinator.
Starting point is 00:16:56 He's like a pro bowler. Kenyon Drake averages three times more rushing your. yards per game in Arizona than he did with Adam Gase. In Arizona, he's a star. He's had 18 touchdowns in 23 games. Wide receiver, Devonte Parker, was considered a bust. Adam Gase left. He had 1,200 yards and 9 TDs the next year.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Robbie Anderson, pretty much just a deep threat. Teddy Bridgewater doesn't throw a deep ball. He leaves Adam Gase. He has 1,100 yards in rebuilding Carolina. Robbie Anderson came out and said, I'm reading a quote, it was times in New York, I honestly, I felt like I was losing my love for football. Oh, great.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Adam Gase was killing his spirit, not just killing the offense. Levian Bell went to the Jets, disappeared into the ether. Sam Darnold, who's got talent, has regressed badly. Like, come on now, Seattle, what message does that send to your players? There are so many talented young guys out there. Alex Van Pelt two weeks ago for Cleveland, Kevin Stefansky couldn't be there because of COVID protocol. Alex Van Pelt was asked to call plays for the Browns against the Steelers,
Starting point is 00:18:08 and he was literally brilliant. He just needed an opportunity. Mike Kafka is a former Northwestern quarterback is sitting out there, overpay for him. But Seattle is becoming a really weird franchise. One playoff win in four years with a Hall of Fame coach, Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner, Jamal Adams. I don't know. I don't even want this story out there.
Starting point is 00:18:36 How did this story leak? Why would it leak? Makes no sense to me at all. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Jamal Adams also said he battled depression when he was in New York.
Starting point is 00:18:54 I mean, seriously? They did not want to win. All I know is Peyton Manning. watching, please endorse me for something. Because, man, that endorsement has gotten gays through two head coaching jobs and now almost the offensive coordinator job with Russell Wilson and the Seahawks. Imagine if you paired like a LeVar Ball manifestation with a Peyton Manning endorsement. I mean, you're unstoppable. There's nothing in life you can't accomplish. It's incredible. At some point, I've got a resume of multiple players at multiple positions exploding
Starting point is 00:19:28 the minute they move off you. Ryan Tannale didn't get slightly better. At one point, he was a backup. He was the backup to Marcus Marriota, who is now a backup, to Derek Carr. Because he finally got a coach. Yes.
Starting point is 00:19:45 It's wild. So Tom Brady, who is not a backup, will play in his 14th conference championship game this Sunday against the Packers. Can't wait for this. And he turned around a Bucks franchise that hadn't been to an NFC title game since the 2002 season.
Starting point is 00:19:58 And Bruce Ariens praised Brady's work to get them to this point. In the playoffs, we also took a little jab at the Patriots. He told Peter King that Tom Brady is a consummate leader. He has been all year. Got the air of confidence that permeates through our team every day. I allow him to be himself. Like New England didn't allow him to coach. I allow him to coach.
Starting point is 00:20:19 I just sit back sometimes and watch. Oh, God. Bruce, Bruce, cut it loose. I love, I mean, this is Bruce Ariens. So, you know, he doesn't. He doesn't care. But this is maybe a quote I would say for after you win the Super Bowl. You know, I love Bruce, but he doesn't have a lot of jewelry on his hands.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Belichick does. He has two rings as an assistant. And so does Bill. But then he also has those six rings as a head coach. Yes. Yeah, this is a quote I would say for after you win the Super Bowl. Yeah, because my gut feeling is Green Bay is going to win Sunday, and Belichick's going to smirk and go, you're making big comments
Starting point is 00:20:58 before you go to Lambo? Well, I don't know that Bill can bounce on his chest this year, but, yes, a big picture. Whatever they did in New England clearly worked. Yes. Like, better than any organization in the history of the NFL. Right. Yes, it's fine. Yes, they're doing it right.
Starting point is 00:21:16 I love that it's working for the Bucks this year. And listen, we all love that we're getting Brady and Rogers in the NFC championship game. It's amazing. I'm actually surprised. I thought that the Bucks were going to be a playoff team this year, but I didn't see them making it to the NFC championship game. So this is going to be a game we talk about for the rest of our sports lives, no matter how it goes.
Starting point is 00:21:40 So Baker Mayfield proved he can win big games this season, helping the Browns get their first playoff win in 26 years. That seems to be enough to keep him in Cleveland. The Browns reportedly feel fully confident moving forward with Baker as their franchise quarterback, and they feel he's answered all the questions that they had about him on and off the field. Well, there was three or four games this year he needed to deliver, and he did. He had a little slump in the middle of the season, that Oakland game. It was kind of bad weather Cleveland games.
Starting point is 00:22:05 But in the end, he's good enough. Now, I'll say this. It's a head coach quarterback league, and I think between Stifansky and Baker, you can win a lot of games. But we talked about this last week. What is happening in the AFC is remarkable. Burrow, Allen, Mahalms, Herbert, Baker, Trevor Lawrence, Lamar Jackson, and most of them have what we consider to be A coaches. So the reality is, Brut and Derek Carr,
Starting point is 00:22:31 the road is only going to get tougher for Cleveland because as he signs a contract, you're not going to be able to go out and just grab an Austin Hooper on the market. The reality is this, when these rookie quarterbacks, Mahomes, by the way, rookie contract, he's only making $5 million this year and Josh Allen. If you look at the AFC, the last bunch of quarterbacks,
Starting point is 00:22:51 they're all on rookie contracts. Well, this has been the formula. as of late. Get to the Super Bowl with a quarterback that's on a rookie contract. Like that's how it goes. That's why you should go all in when you know you have the guy in the beginning.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Sign all those free agents, get all those stars, put some big pieces around him. I don't anticipate Baker having a Patrick Holmes like contract whenever he is signed. He still has another year left on his contract and a team option for 2022. So they don't have to sign him right away.
Starting point is 00:23:18 He still have a little bit of time, but they are going to stick with him moving forward. You got to win your division first. And as tough as the AFC North is, it's completely winnable for Cleveland. Like, the Ravens had a up and down season. Like, that division
Starting point is 00:23:33 is open. We don't know what's going on with the Steelers. Joe Burrell's coming off of an injury as great as he was. They still have some growing to do. So I think the Cleveland's in a great position moving forward. They've certainly set a tone and put together a culture, which is great for the league and great for Cleveland. Listen, getting
Starting point is 00:23:49 the culture right, a third of the team doesn't have that right. So just getting that right. Miami now has it right. Yep. That's the Jets don't. The Lions don't. Atlanta doesn't yet.
Starting point is 00:24:00 Lions are going to have a lot of excitement and energy and motivation. Dan Campbell. Yes. He's got all the things that don't really matter but get talked about and are quotable like alpha and motivation. Joel Osteen would coach football if that matter. You know what motivates me to go to work besides my love for talking about sports? What? the paycheck that I get to do it.
Starting point is 00:24:24 Yeah, yeah, that's fair. That's your motivation to work. Gives you a better life. I mean, no, just like, that's what makes you go to work. Like, that's what makes you do a good job, right? Like, you get paid to do it. There's not volunteer work here. Like, what is this motivation thing?
Starting point is 00:24:39 Go win games. It's actually very motivating. The more you win, the more you're motivated to keep winning. Lions lead the league and bursting through the doors out into the field. Running through walls. There's no walls in the whole Lions facility. So Justin Fields has officially declared, for the NFL draft. He announced in social media he will forego his final year of eligibility
Starting point is 00:24:56 and leave Ohio State. In just eight games this season, he had a career high, 70.2 completion percentage, 2,100 passing yards, 27 total touchdowns, and only six interception. Looks like a good quarterback to me. Runs, big throws, played in big games, great against Clemson. He just needs, you know, just needs an NFL quarterback coach, refine it, but looks good to me. I think that that game against Clemson answered all questions. The 10 championship game was a little questionable, but he did have an injury. Alabama's better than Ohio State. They're great.
Starting point is 00:25:30 Trevor Lawrence last year was engulfed by LSU. LSU had 15 guys drafted. LSU was better than Clemson last year. I do think, though, just looking at the draft order and all the stuff that you started the show with, with Deshawn Watson, the dolphins at that third pick, we don't know what the Jets are going to do with Sam Darnold. This draft could be, this draft and NFL offseason. Like last year was wild with KM and Brady. This year could be crazy.
Starting point is 00:25:56 Look at the Jets number two pick to Joy's point. If I just put right there, Jaguars draft one, Deshawn Watson two, Dolphins 3, wouldn't you be like, yeah, that's that you could not do better in the draft than DeShon Watson. If I'm the Jets, I got five first round picks next three years, give them up. The Texans need draft picks. they need a quarterback. You could get Darnold and draft Jeffen Fields. I mean, you could literally do that both. I told you yesterday, I don't believe in hoarding up draft picks.
Starting point is 00:26:27 Like, you do obviously need to build through the draft every single year. To get something. So sometimes package that together and get a known commodity if you're in a situation where you have pieces there. That's why I love it for the Dolphins. For the Jets, it's also very interesting because Sal is a defensive guy. If you have a playmaker like Deshawn Watson there, Andy's a star. I mean, can you imagine New York with Sean Watson? So good.
Starting point is 00:26:50 We're only talking about AFC East teams for him. Well, the Miami rumor. Well, the Jets makes sense. Robert Sala would love him. And Deshaun mentioned Robert Sala. Secondly, Miami was a rumor, Chris Mortensen, who I trust. And New England has no dynamic offensive players.
Starting point is 00:27:08 There's your magic elixir for the Patriots offensive woes. Yeah. I mean, Deshaun might not love that, but I don't know. He's lost a lot of big games to Belichick. I think he'd be okay with it. Honestly, I think he'd be okay with it. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:27:23 The Hurd-Ly News. Kevin Clark's one of my favorite sportswriters in the country, NFL guy. The Ringer used to write at the Wall Street Journal and slow newsday videocast, which is a riot. And Kevin Clark is joining me. Brought to you by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing. Before I... Let me just start with this trade thing, because I shouldn't be engineering trades. It's nonsensical.
Starting point is 00:27:43 What am I doing? I'm just an idiot talking, right? But there are moments where you don't have to, Kevin, make big leaps. Deshawn reportedly wants out. Do not blame him. Boy, if I could take, I mean, let's be honest. When you traded Jamal Adams, you got those picks to get a star. He's your star.
Starting point is 00:28:03 It makes some sense, right? Some? It makes sense. And I would say that Deshaun has all the power because he has no trade clause. Maybe he doesn't want to rebuild another culture in New York. I understand that part. But the point of draft picks is to do something with them. Don't just take five guys and try to build something.
Starting point is 00:28:21 You need a Deshawn Watson to change everything. You take five draft picks because you want him to Sean Watson. Now all of a sudden he's available. I would take the big swing. If it's available, if Deshaun just wants out, I would just try to do it because it sounds like he doesn't want to play for Cal McNair anymore. I think you take that leap. I think you take that chance.
Starting point is 00:28:38 So what did you make of I thought it was so Andy Reed? And yesterday, Peter Schreger brought up something. goes once he won the Super Bowl, you play with a little bit of house money because now, Chad Henny, go for it. But I sat there and I thought, this is why I love Andy Reid. A lot of old coaches get outdated because they don't adapt. And Andy Reed is 66 going on 26. What did you make of that moment for Andy and the game itself losing Mahomes with eight minutes to go in the third and still winning that game?
Starting point is 00:29:15 Colin, if your life was on the line and you had to pick one person to design a play to get you a first down for your life, it's Andy Reed. And I knew that. I went in third down, third and 14. Chad Henney runs at 17 miles per hour according to next gen staff almost picks up the first down, okay? And then they run the sprint right. Tony Romo, who sees everything, didn't see that coming.
Starting point is 00:29:38 It was unbelievable. I've talked to Chad Henney about this in the past and that how Andy Reed uses practice. And he wants guys like Mahomes, obviously, but also Chad Henney to test their limits in practice, make mistakes, sort of understand what they can do and what they can't do. And I don't think it's an accident that they knew that Chad Henney could run this this sprint right option. And that Tyree Kill could do it because they understand the supporting cast.
Starting point is 00:30:00 They understand what they can do. They have all of these advantages. There's a reason that Andy Reid is hosting his third straight conference championship game at home. No one's done that except Andy Reid with the Eagles. He understands how to operate in this league. He understands exactly what needs to be done. I agree with you.
Starting point is 00:30:18 They're playing with house money after the Super Bowl. But Andy Reid is as amazing of a head coach for this era as there is. Listen, remember Nick Saban said defense is over, right? And that's unbelievable endorsement and most evidence that defense is over ever. He said that's like Elon Musk saying, you know, solar cars are over. It's just a totally different thing, okay? And for Andy Reed, the best offensive coach should be in this era with that offense. It all checks out.
Starting point is 00:30:42 I just hope Patrick Mahomes can play this weekend because, It would be a real shame football fan if we don't see Josh Allen versus Mall. Yeah, so do I. And, you know, I said this, and it probably wouldn't happen. And I said, listen, you know, Tom Cruise breaks an ankle. They delay production of mission impossible six. Jay-Z get sick? You don't go to the backup.
Starting point is 00:31:01 We have moved the Masters, highly rigid, to November. It wouldn't be the craziest thing. I mean, it really wouldn't to me. In the spirit of competition, just watch the concussion protocol. You pass it? if Mahom said I can play Monday night. That's when we play. Is it outrageous to say that?
Starting point is 00:31:21 I think it is. I think it is. It would be a real shame for this season we've had to go through with so many interruptions and Wednesday afternoon and all that stuff to not get the amazing conference title game. And to not have, you know, one thing that's amazing about this Final Four column is it's four of the best coaches in the NFL and four of the best quarterback in the NFL. Yeah. And for the best quarterback in the NFL to be removed from that and not get that would be close to
Starting point is 00:31:45 football tragedy, okay? But I think there's just nothing that that can be done in regards that. You just hope that he gets approved by the, by the independent neurologist and that he's able to play. I would also say the toe injury is a concern. I've talked to quarterbacks this week who say a toe injury, I mean, that is the kind of thing. Obviously, it's far less important than his health and the concussion, but I would say that will impact him as well. Remember, this time last year, they played Tennessee, and the best play in that game in the AFC title game was him running down the left sideline. I was there. I couldn't believe it, not getting tackled for that touchdown. So I think that those are both things to monitor. And I just hope
Starting point is 00:32:18 he can play just from a football perspective. So one of the funny things you do is you talk, I'm from Seattle, so I've watched every Seahawk game since Jim Zorn. Is there, what do you say, what is your saying on the Seahawks? They haven't. Never play a normal game. Never play a normal game. And apparently they can't have a normal coach hire either. So they never played a normal game in Seattle. They're all kooky. They're wins, their losses. So I see the story this morning about Adam Gase, and I'm thinking he's going to be the coordinator, proof that Pete hates Russell Wilson. What do you make of that even getting out as a story?
Starting point is 00:32:56 It's dumbfounding. And just from a scheme perspective, okay, let's start here. So Adam Gase has not had a top half offense above 17th since he had Peyton Manning, okay, 2014. And in the last four years, I think he's been 26th or lower. And beyond that, just the player management side of it, I think anybody, kids out there, whoever you are, find something you like and are passionate about as much as Adam Gase is at alienating his young stars, okay?
Starting point is 00:33:28 It is his favorite thing in the world to find a young star. I mean, he was arguing with Jarvis Landry five minutes into his tenure in Miami. He obviously alienated Jamel Adams, who's in Seattle, as soon as he possibly could. I mean, it is impossible for him to get along with someone who is not Peyton Manning, apparently. And I've heard some horror stories, and I just don't understand why you would do it. And if you're the offensive guru and you're not producing offense, I feel like the guy's in office space. What is it that you do here, Adam? I just don't understand it.
Starting point is 00:33:57 I think if they make this higher, I don't think it's, you know, they hate Russell Wilson or whatever. I just think that they're prioritizing some sort of style and some sort of wave of decision-making over the best interests of Russell Wilson. And that's why, just from a football perspective, I hate it. Let Russell Wilson. I don't want to look back on this in 10 years and ask what if with Russell Wilson. And this is a prime example of a what if scenario. What if Adam Gase isn't hired? You don't make those kind of hires when you know how it's going to be looked back on.
Starting point is 00:34:24 You know, I said this. As I watched the Packers game this weekend, I kept thinking, man, this doesn't make Mike McCarthy look good. He runs a very static offense. The Packers had 71 percent of their plays. there was motion. They're so clever. And it leads you to believe that Aaron just wasn't pushed. He wasn't challenged. He was bored. Remember he led the NFL for two years in throwaways, basically saying it's an eye roll to a coach. Like, that's a stupid call. And I sat there and I thought to myself, I can't stop thinking about the Cowboys and Dak. Yeah. I mean, just your takeaway on what LaFleur's done to Aaron,
Starting point is 00:35:02 he had all these offensive pieces two years ago. He didn't look like this. Yeah. It is, is when we're redefining the legacies and we do that every playoffs, obviously Sean McDermott's taking a big leap. Josh Allen's taking a big leap. Lafleur is taking a big leap and Mike McCarthy's taking a big leap down. Because first of all, on this weekend, the Packers had the most yardage ever in a playoff game against number one defense, 484 yards, okay?
Starting point is 00:35:27 They are doing, this is a very simple season, Colin. You know, defenses can't practice, all that stuff. You take what you can do well and you just hammer that over and over again. They figured that out. and they have Aaron Rogers doing what he does best. Devante Adams has six more receptions than anybody else in football inside the 10-yard. They turned him into Janus down there. Okay, he's unstoppable.
Starting point is 00:35:48 And I just think that there's, from it, it was so easy to unlock Aaron Rogers. And before he was able to do it, and by the way, the whole team is really good. I mean, I think, you know, they pressured Jared Gough 15 out of 31 snaps last week. And that's the most pressure that a Sean McVeigh coach team has ever gotten, okay, in our way. And it just turning into a bit of a buzzsaw. But I would just say that there were so many ways to unlock Aaron Rogers, and Mike McCarthy was doing none of them. And if you're trying to make that higher right now,
Starting point is 00:36:18 I don't know how you justify him taking Dak Prescott and the Cowboys forward. All right. His name is Kevin Clark, the ringer. Great sports writer. He's got the Slow Newsday videocast. It's a pleasure to see you. We are so lucky. Cross our fingers with Mahomes and his health.
Starting point is 00:36:34 This is going to be a weekend for the ages. Kev, thanks for coming on the show again. Any time, go. You bet. He does great work. I don't know if I want to go to my big story yet. I have a big eye. I have a big, it's not a theory or a prediction.
Starting point is 00:36:51 Certain people are grudge holders. Yes, I'm one of them. Yeah, it's okay. I don't think I'm a grudge holder. But if I was, you know, it's just a heightened version of petty. It's petty. It's petty. What if
Starting point is 00:37:06 What if Belichick was petty? What if he was a grudge holder? I think he is. Exactly. Exactly. Are we breaking the code for what he's going to do next? I'm just saying, you answered it. He is a grudge holder.
Starting point is 00:37:28 I've got a thought. Okay. It's not a prediction. Listen, we do this for a living. We can project, we can guess. This is not the New York Times. Yeah, no, we're not journalists. We do big day journalism here, but.
Starting point is 00:37:44 But we're not, I'm not a journalist. I won't speak for you. I'm not, no. I'm not either. Yeah. All right, just stick around. I got a thought. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 00:37:58 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast, Superhuman, documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:38:21 Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care which I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football
Starting point is 00:38:38 or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:39:33 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little camp? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we picket here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:39:51 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you're just so you're not. y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed Craig, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. Thank you finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:40:15 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your Facebook. favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations
Starting point is 00:40:41 with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it, and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch.
Starting point is 00:41:00 Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:41:17 Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Ah, yeah, welcome back. boy men are men can really be idiots. Met's had to fire their GM because he sent 63 straight text to a woman, no response, harassed her and then sent stuff that shouldn't be sent to anybody. Except maybe your husband or wife. Well, yeah, I mean, unsolicited, explicit pictures from strangers have literally never been a good idea.
Starting point is 00:41:56 Like, I don't know one woman that's like, yes, finally what I've been waiting for. he is an idiot. And by the way, men do better. Yeah. I mean, now you have to do the fifth text. You probably just leave her alone. If I text somebody and they don't text me back, I'm insecure enough to think I'll never text them again.
Starting point is 00:42:18 Me too. They don't like me. I'm okay with not being liked. Half America hates me. Me too. But if I send it and most of the time you know what happens is somebody sends it. I get 30 in a day. Yours falls into a.
Starting point is 00:42:31 Right. You read it. And then you meant to write back and then he forgot. Yeah. There have been times I literally put something, thought I pushed send. I want to talk to you three weeks later. And I'm like, oh my God, I never sent that. How embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Yeah. Guy sent 63 text to a woman reporter. She didn't respond to any of them. Wouldn't you be? How delusional is a man do you have to be? Well, yeah, he has some issues. But yeah, just as a note, don't send unsolicited. Probably don't want to send solicited ones either, but mostly just don't do that.
Starting point is 00:42:59 It's, we don't like it. We've said many times. We don't like it, but we really don't. We really mean it. We don't like it. At all. It's not cute. And by the way, if a woman sent me something, my first takeaway would be she's missing some marbles.
Starting point is 00:43:13 There's not, listen, I, anyway. So I'm going to throw this out there. So I do this for a living. I'm not a journalist. I'm not going to put myself in sort of like Tom Rinaldi's class or, you know, like a journalist, New York Times. I break about a one story a year. I'll break a story. We broke the Brady story to the Bible.
Starting point is 00:43:32 about once a year. And it's not journalism. It's just like somebody calls me and knows me and, you know, they give me a little scoop. And I got, I have sources for stuff, but I'm in the opinion business. And Joy used to be a real journalist and stuff. And she's in the opinion business. But, and she has sources too. But I'm just going to have you think about something.
Starting point is 00:43:50 Is Bill Belichick petty or a little bit of a grudge holder? Yes. That's not a leap. So I see a story, Josh McDaniels, great offensive. coordinator for New England, prime candidate for the Eagles job. If he gets the job, he'll take one or two assistants with him. In the last year, Joe Judge, great patriot assistant, left. They didn't challenge him.
Starting point is 00:44:21 Left, took a couple of assistants. Brian Flores, two years ago, left. defensive coordinator took a couple of assistants. Josh McDaniels is going to take that Philadelphia job, leaves, takes a couple of assistance. Dante Scarnacki has already retired. Jed Fish, strangely, spent just one year in New England. Now he's the Arizona football coach. They don't have a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:44:46 They don't have a quarterback in New England. It's one of the weakest rosters. They have lost all their top assistants. And what if Belichick waited about two more weeks for all the top candidates to be gone? And announced his retirement. from the Patriots. Colin, he would screw over Robert Kraft. Yes.
Starting point is 00:45:17 Let's go back to Belichick as a grudgeholder. Who forced him to trade Jimmy Garoppolo? If he is not forced to trade Jimmy Garoppolo, then the Patriots don't embarrass themselves this year. Then Belichick doesn't continually get mocked this year. Don't think Belichick wanted to win this divorce? Oh, it hurts. Folks, you don't think he has an ego?
Starting point is 00:45:43 You don't think Sabin has an ego? You don't think Popovich has an ego. Brady has not only won this divorce, it makes Belichick look stupid. He can't draft receivers. He couldn't figure out Tom. Just throwing it out there. They've lost Joe Judge. They've lost Flores.
Starting point is 00:46:05 They'll lose McDaniels. They raid the staff. You wait a week. The candidate's gone. Dante Scarnackia, Jed Fiff. Colin, he is super competitive. Just take a year off. Cherry picked the best opening in a year.
Starting point is 00:46:21 Nobody said Belichick, though he's close to 70, is retiring, certainly could, made his money, made his fortune. You think he was happy one time? Robert Kraft has gotten involved in football stuff. Once. Belichick sitting there thinking, what, you don't trust me? didn't parcels leave new england get to buy the groceries you want me to make dinner i'm not saying this is going to happen i'm not making a prediction here this isn't even a theory but let's just say
Starting point is 00:46:55 he left in two weeks new england would be the worst football team in the nfl no quarterback no playmakers, bad roster, all the brain power gone, Bella check out. In Jupiter, fishing for a year, talking to Jimmy Johnson, maybe does TV, maybe does it, not saying it's going to happen. This is not a prediction. But the question is, is Bill a grudge holder? Yeah, that's not really, we're not going to argue that, right? Just throwing it out there.
Starting point is 00:47:34 Again, every, like, loser blogger will be like, coward says. I'm just saying. Well, I guess it's the amount of the amount of weighing if he cares about winning the divorce or not. Don't you think he looks bad? Don't you think this has heard his legacy? I don't know if this year has heard his legacy. But. Peter Schrager said yesterday, here's what he said about Josh McDaniels and the Philadelphia Eagle job.
Starting point is 00:48:00 Josh McDaniels coming from New England to go work with Howie Roseman, finally becoming a head coaching candidate and finally becoming a head coach in this league would be something to watch. because if there's anyone who can talk to quarterback, six McDaniels, but as we know, what happened in Denver, and then, of course, leaving Indianapolis at the altar there, a lot of teams were like,
Starting point is 00:48:18 that is toxic, we don't want to touch it. Do the Eagles have the courage to walk into their media room and say, Josh McDaniels is the number one guy for this job? Lost a lot of assistance. In a week, two weeks,
Starting point is 00:48:31 all the good ones are gone. I am not predicting or saying it's going to happen, but it's the kind of stuff that swims in my head when I hear this stuff. What did you call it? The magic shelf? The magic shelf. It's like just like theories and ideas just stored up there and stacked up there in boxes.
Starting point is 00:48:49 Hour two next. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
