This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians,

Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

Farmers switch.
We want you to switch.
You know why?
because you can save an average of $470 on auto insurance.
That's a lot of money, my friends, for a quick phone call.
You know what I mean?
I think so.
Anyway, average nationwide annual savings survey data July to December of 2020.
Get involved.
We are farmers.
Yeah, you know the jingle.
All right, welcome back to the show.
It's up on game.
to you, we've had some really, really spirited conversations, TJ and stretching. It's been good. I've liked them, guys. But let's switch gears for a moment here. We're going into Super Bowl weekend Eve. And there's a lot of discussions about obviously Tom Brady's accomplishments and everything that has taken place. Tony Romo says,
Mahomes cannot top Brady if Brady wins this Super Bowl.
And I'm just wondering, is Tom Brady right?
And does Tom Brady have the stuff at this point in his career?
We have a little sound from him.
I like for us to hear this from Tom Brady about experience.
And then let's broach the conversation of if a win goes to Tom Brady for this Super Bowl,
is it out of reach for even Patrick Mahomes?
No.
Experience doesn't matter.
Playing well matters.
The team that wins is not going to be the most experienced team.
It's going to be a team that plays the best.
So we got to prepare the best.
We got to execute the best.
We got to perform the best under pressure.
And if we do that, we'll be champions.
And if we don't, we won't be.
I guess when you win Super Bowl,
you kind of clear your mouth that way.
Because every guy that I've heard when the Super Bowl does that,
you know when when they're making a point which is interesting yeah it's interesting we got patented
plexico would be sounding like he chewing on a super powdery donut when he'd be making points but
that's because he won a super bowl well maybe other things but anyways uh playing well
playing well versus experience does this how much of this is true how much of this plays a part
in him winning this Super Bowl
and does that solidify his career, guys?
Listen, you know,
Tony Romo says
Mahomes can't catch Brady
if Brady wins this Super Bowl.
I believe that's completely false.
Mahomes is early in his career.
If he was to lose this Super Bowl
and go on to win multiple Super Bowes,
he has an opportunity.
Now, you talk Brady.
Does experience matter playing well?
experience plays a huge factor because you know not to get too high, not to get too low.
When things are going great, stay calm.
When things are going bad, stay calm.
In Mahomes, though, he's a young vet, so to speak, because he's been in this, they won a Super Bowl last year.
He's been in this situation.
And so he should know how to conduct himself the right way during this game.
But if it's a tight game, you just never know what's going to happen.
He's played in so many big games that you would believe, regardless of how the game is going,
unless it's similar to the first game where Tariqio hits him for 200 yards in the first quarter,
he feels like his team is going to have a chance to win.
So does experience matter?
Yes.
But you normally play well when you're calm, you're not over-anxious to make a play.
Just let everything come to you.
Mm.
TJ, man, it must be a Pittsburgh Cincinnati thing, man,
because I totally disagree.
Mm.
You know what?
I think he did wrong.
I really do.
Mm.
I don't believe that...
Dead wrong.
I don't believe that Patrick Mahomes can catch Tom Brady
if he wins another Super Bowl.
Huh?
Well, I mean...
I don't believe it.
You have how many years Patrick Blitz's play?
Hey, you just said that Patrick Mahomes is young.
Yeah.
Let us remind you that Tom Brady won the Super Bowl in his second season
because he came in the Hinesfield and beat us in 2001 in my second season and won the Super Bowl.
And then he won it back to back in 2003 and 2004.
So you're saying that Patrick Mahom is young.
He's on course to compete with Tom Brady.
But when you say that he's young,
Tom Brady won three Super Bowls in his first five years.
How many years of Pat Mahomes play?
Do you know that?
Do you know?
What is it?
Third or fourth year?
Third year?
It's his third year.
Like I said, he's on course.
He's on pace.
He's on pace.
But what I'm saying is Tom Brady won three Super Bowls in his first five years.
Yeah.
Don't get me wrong.
Hey, he's a great quarterback.
And it does come down to playing great.
But this man has been a 10 Super Bowl in 20 seasons.
He's been to the Super Bowl every other year for 20 years.
I don't see Patrick Mahomes doing that.
I just don't.
Nobody saw Tom Brady doing it either.
Hey, we did.
Hey, we did.
Hey, we did see him doing it because we was watching it.
We was watching it.
I saw him do it because he came to Pittsburgh and beat us twice.
I seen him.
Hey, Plex.
And won to play a game.
I've seen it.
Hey, I just need a one word answer for this.
First four, and I'm a huge fan of Brady, but I got to go at you.
First four years, just give me one name.
Who has the better career in her first four years of their career?
Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes.
Statistically.
No, no, no.
Pash is Mahomes.
Statistically.
Disclaimer.
Patrick Mahomes.
Hey, I'm giving me the fact.
I'm giving you the true, homie.
You want to be put up on game?
I'm putting you up on games.
Statistically, that's what everything is based off.
We don't have no stats.
We get no contract.
You need stats.
It is not.
It is not based on stats.
I don't think it's realistic for any.
If it was based on stats, then a lot of these players
who haven't won Super Bowls and championships
and all these professional sports
will be in the Hall of Fame.
It's not based on stats.
Hey, they worried about getting that check.
Hall of Fame comes afterwards.
That's just the reality of it.
I do not believe.
That it's realistic.
I don't.
It's tough.
It's painful it is for me to admit.
You know, myself and the whole cowboys and the jobs, we don't agree much.
Tony Rombo, I believe that it's right.
I don't care if Patrick Mahon wins this game.
I don't think that he will accomplish what Tom Brady has accomplished over 20 seasons.
I just don't see it.
Honestly speaking, I don't even think that, again, like you said, Plex,
I look at it like this, even if Patrick Mahomes does win this Super Bowl,
I just don't see how feasible it is to think that any player or any coach
will ever be able to accomplish at the level that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick did.
The easy out is to say, never, never say nobody.
It's hard to say people can accomplish what Brady and Belichick accomplished.
That's hard.
It's not realistic.
to think, right? Is that fair to take that? It's not really not.
It's not realistic to think. Does my homes want to play until he's 40? If he does, that's 15 more years.
But do you understand how many things have to go right? You have to be healthy. You have to have a great coach.
You know what I mean? Your personnel has to stay in place.
How long are you going to have a tire kill or your system or the system that the quarterback is in?
I'm citing with Tony Romo on this as sad as it may sound.
Oh, I mean, that's easy to do because we've never seen anybody like Brady.
We probably won't again.
Thank you for answering our question.
I remember having that conversation about Joe Montana.
If you had had, and this goes kind of to your point, T.J.
If we had this conversation right after Joe Montana's last season in league,
Will we ever see a winner?
Everybody would have said, like Joe Montana ever again in the history of,
will we see a winner of the magnitude that Jerry Rice was, even at receivers.
We still have not seen the Jerry Rice, and you would never see one again.
Statistically speaking,
for 14,000 yards already.
Statistically speaking, I agree that we probably will never see a Jerry Rice.
But winner, but winner greatness.
winner? I would have never argue that we would ever see a winner like Jerry Rice or Joe Montana.
And the only reason why I'll throw Jerry Rice in there is because I can't think of another,
I mean, if we throw Charles Haley in the mix or Romanowski, but in reality, we're saying the guy
who's directly the reason why the team is winning, you have to go to Jerry Rice and to Joe Montana
as the only two comparables.
And that's because Jerry Rice got one with Steve Young as well,
not just with Joe Montana.
But as a quarterback,
we had never seen anyone achieve at the level that Joe Montana had achieved at.
And then Tom Brady comes and he blanks that out.
Not only did he achieve it,
but he basically doubled it.
And he did it with less.
Oof, yes, he did.
I just, I find it,
to be a great discussion topic,
but I just think that it'll be very difficult
for anyone to be able to eclipse
or even outdo
what one Tom Brady is done,
whether he wins this Super Bowl or not.
So anyway,
listen, we got a lot of stuff to discuss
and we don't have a whole lot of time.
Coming up on the other side of this break,
I want to get out of this break right now
so that we can give this man all the time that he's deserving of.
The legendary coach Bruce Rawlinson,
four-time national champion head coach for the modern-day monarchs.
That's high school.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds, I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying.
Yep, that's me, Clipper Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football,
or my career in sports media.
Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
And now I'm bringing all of that excitement
to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
This is a place for raw,
unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite
athletes, creators, and voices that
not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
One week, I'll take you behind the scenes
of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment.
And the next, we'll talk about life,
mental health, purpose, and even music.
The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast.
It's a space for honest conversations,

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it. And we don't
know when we've done enough. Because people
scoreboard watch. Life becomes about
wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.

Absolutely.

It's called Modern Day.
And listen, this is a national show,
but if you don't know who coach Bruce Rawlinson
is, well, let me just tell you,
it's a four-time national champion
head coach. He built
the program. He is the gold standard
of what us coaches
in high school sports and
athletics strive to be.
And we got them on our show, and this is really
cool because obviously there is a lot of
things that we have to discuss with
Coach Rollo. So without further
ado, bringing on Coach
Rollins. How are you doing, Coach Rollins? How are you doing,
How are you feeling?
I'm feeling good after that introduction.
We got to scrap it up all of the day.
It's a beautiful thing when you can bring on a legendary guy.
One of the things I have studied you for quite some time.
Obviously, me and TJ have gone against you when we were at Long Beach Polly,
and we weren't able to hang with you guys in the trenches.
And we knew that would be our toughest challenge coming into the game.
But just talk to us a little bit about, you know, just you are a big character building coach.
You believe in the tradition and just the pageantry of what comes along with the sport.
Talk a little bit about where did that come from for you, coach.
Well, obviously it comes from age.
But, you know, you mentioned the modern-day Long Beach Polly game.
games and that's what the fans miss right now, the rivalry games, the big games, the,
you know, the Bosco, modern day, you know, and it's a sad commentary.
But when you ask me that question, it's the way I was trained as a former monarch back
in the 60s, you know, where you grind it.
and the coaches were in your face.
But yet it worked.
You know,
it's,
you know,
when I look at what I do,
you know,
obviously times have changed.
And the way I coached in the 90s,
I'd probably have 16 lawsuits here in 2000 and 2020,
one.
But,
but it's still,
players want discipline.
And players want organization.
Players want structure.
And that's, again, now we flash to our present situation.
And we're hanging in there and we're practicing.
And, you know, but, you know, you can sense, you know,
that the urgency by the kids is starting to wane because they're going,
are we really going to play?
But, you know, I look back and, you know, on my accomplishments and in honesty, whatever, you know, here's what gives me satisfaction now.
When the kid calls me and he graduated 10 years ago and he said, you know, calls me up and says, coach, I got a job promotion.
And the reason I beat out the other guys was I instituted.
what you taught me. Hard work, dealing with adversity, just grinding, getting there first,
leaving last, extra work, and weekend work. And that's what gives me my satisfaction.
That's awesome. And I'm not going to change. I'm not going to change. You know,
I look at the kids today. They're no different. Kids are kids. And even with the distractions of
social media and instant gratification.
You know, if you came to a modern day practice, you know, you'd kind of smile and go,
okay, you know, the old guy's still doing it the way he did it.
And it's also, you know, you brainwash your staff and everybody, everybody on every level
coaches the same way.
And the kids know what to expect.
They're held accountable.
and there's repercussions for, you know, problems that you cause.
And, you know, it's, it works.
It works.
Does it work for everybody?
I don't know, and I really don't care how they do it.
You know, we're going to be ready to go.
It's like I told the kids, you know, we gathered up a week ago or so.
and I knew they were kind of going, you know, what are we doing?
And I said, look, brothers, you know, if you get COVID, you'll deal with it in many cases.
If I get COVID, I might be done.
Right, yeah.
You know, I'm risking my life every day.
Eric Johnson's risking his life every day.
But we're coaching them up.
We're flying around.
We're enjoying what we do and energy on the modern day football.
Hey, Coach, Blake's Kilbris.
You know, I always attribute, you know, a lot of my success, you know, to my high school coach.
He was a great mentor, and he was a father figure to me.
And I always say that, you know, he was a great coach, but he was an even better teacher.
So what is the one constant that has remained for you and coaching personally that in coaching these young men?
and the success you have had?
You know what, Plexico, I'm glad you said what you said,
because I know how much success you had,
both in the collegiate level and professional football.
But going back and recognizing that the foundation was laid in your high school years,
the one constant, you know, is discipline.
You are held accountable.
You know, if we're gathering at whatever time it is, two o'clock, you know, you're going to get a little piece of my, you know what, you know, if you're late.
You know, because you carried that work ethic with you because you were held accountable.
And they're all not going to play college football.
And they're all not, I mean, very few are going to play professional football.
But it's the same thing in a job.
It's the same thing, whether you become a teacher, a doctor, a lawyer, you're held to a standard,
and you've got to meet that standard, and there are no excuses.
You know, I look at my kids, and I have to brainwash the parents, you know, because I don't want to hear excuses.
You know, everybody's got excuses, and, you know, but yet, what are we teaching them if we get into all these?
It's about success.
And, you know, I look in it.
I mean, you know, how blessed my, you know,
Matt Barkie's getting ready for the, for the AFC championship game,
and we're texting during the week.
I mean, what a, you know, that's what it's all about, you know.
And I know Matt, Bark and Linerd and those kids, you know,
they also recognize, I don't care.
It just happens.
But I think successful people like you have to go.
back to the foundation and recognize that foundation, not for our egos.
I could, you know, but.
You guys are listening to Up on Game coming live from the Farmers Insurance Fox Sports

We have Bruce Rawlinson on the line, legendary football coach at Modder Day High School
in Santa Ana, California.
That's in Orange County for the people that aren't familiar.
one of the powerhouses in high school football.
Coach, the question I have with CIF canceling the season,
what is it, how do you talk to the team, navigate them through it?
Because a lot of these kids, they really, that's what they look forward to
is going to football practice and playing in the games on Friday night.
Now that that's been canceled, how do you keep them engaged,
the safety protocols and being tested?
And it's not just for the players.
It's like you said earlier.
It's for yourself and the fellow coaches as well that are older in age that they can go home to their families in great health.
You know, here's the thing you've got to recognize.
Okay, the CIA has not canceled our season yet.
Okay.
It is the state that set a tier system of when we can return to play.
the every section in the CIF recommended with through health experts okay that that the
false sports be put in the red tier I'm not going to sit here and get political and
bag on anybody but all of a sudden the tears have come out and we're in the orange
tier our numbers are coming down there is movement you know coach Patrick Walsh we have
has created. We're all members of SportsU. We're feeding information. There's now hundreds of coaches
in California that have joined the organization, and we're pressuring the state legislature.
Turn it over to the counties that are responsible for releasing you sports. I'm under the guisees of
Orange and our great administration.
And they have to wait till the county health department says go.
We're still hoping.
But that's what I was talking about earlier.
We can make this thing happen.
Maybe play five league games.
We have till April 17th to get fall sports done with.
And yet you need 14 padded practice.
and then you go.
And that's where we're holding out hope that maybe in mid-February they turn us loose.
Maybe in the third week of February, I don't have a calendar in front of me, whatever it is,
the 23rd or so.
And then you can get games.
You know, I don't know what the participation will be regarding spectators.
You know, most schools have the ability.
and Fox will be all over it with Prep Zone.
And we can live stream these games out of stadium.
Or hell, I don't care if we play it at modern day high school under the lights
or we play at Orange Lutheran.
Let these kids play.
Let them play, okay?
Turn it over to us.
We're good at what we do.
We can isolate them.
You mentioned, if we have to, you know, we can test them.
And I know the public schools have a little bit more difficulty, but right now the pressure in Orange County.
I can't speak for any other county, but I know that the county health department and the supervisors of Orange County, they want to get the kids back into school.
We've been in school at Modern Day on a hybrid schedule since August.
We have had some segments of remote learning when it spiked over Christmas.
we switched to remote for two weeks, then we brought them back.
And it's working.
It's working.
So it's time for everybody to take a deep breath.
You guys are in my corner.
You have the power of the media.
These kids need to play.
Let them play.
Yeah, well, that's why we brought you on, Coach.
And, hey, listen, we're talking to Bruce Rawlinson, Coach Bruce Rawlins and four-time National champ.
I just got to ask you.
And we really appreciate you.
National champ at Mottor Day, by the way,
just making sure I go all the way through the title.
Coach, like I said, we appreciate you coming on.
It's just very humbling to have you on our show.
Can you answer this one for me before we let you go?
In terms of recruiting, recruitment,
there are other states that muscled through,
they powered through, they got through a season.
They did a season.
they played a season, they moved on.
In terms of recruiting and recruitment,
when you have fringe guys that they could get recruited,
they could not get recruited.
When you have guys that maybe are getting offers,
but maybe we needed to see a little bit more,
what would your advice be to those players
that did not get the opportunity thus far
and have to deal with the fact that other portions of the country
were able to get through seasons.
Yeah, that's the sad part.
38 states have state champions, you know,
and California, Oregon,
we're flopping around.
I mean, I don't like talking that way,
but that's the way I feel.
Fringe guys, I've got definitely three guys
and could be as high as five guys.
This was their senior year.
This was their year.
played some as juniors and sophomores, and they've gotten bigger, stronger, and faster, and they're
ready to get that offer that would have come had we had a fall season, and I'm devastated for them,
and I'm calling, you know, I always block out an hour or so in the morning, and I call coaches
and talk about them. You know, I'm involved with a recruiting service that has come out and
and videotape the kids doing various drills,
and they're getting some exposure through that.
But again, it all circles back to the same thing.
You know, those kids, the 21 kids, you know,
I hate to say this, but they could be depending on the junior college
to pick up that offer.
There's a couple of coaches that have called me that have openings
and are aware of some of these seniors that I have that can play it at their level,
whether it be, you know, U-TEP or Utah State schools like that.
The next thing that's gotten whacked is preferred walk-offs, okay?
There's not going to be a lot of those because they extended the eligibility on the four-year level.
So there goes another niche that they could have counted on.
Now I'm talking to guys about, okay, take this kid and great.
shirt them. So we're working it from every angle we can. And then I'm telling the 22 guys,
you know, and then I got a whole bunch of good ones. You know, you got to get serious about
committable offer and you may want to lock it down right now. But you and I know, but you and I know,
nothing is set in stone until they sign that paper. But, you know, I'm in constant communication
with the college coaches to try to try to, you know, advocate for my kids.
Coach, we really appreciate you coming on to the show.
I got to tell you, I mean, all of us who know high school football
and understand the integrity and the sanctity of the game
and what you have brought to it and the way you've built it,
big fans of you and just continue to stay focused and stay dialed in
because the game needs people like you,
and we all benefit when we have guys like you around.
So we appreciate you coming on the show.
Appreciate you, coach.
Thanks, coach.
I appreciate it.
Hey, everybody knows, man.
Go box, baby.
There you go.
All right, coach.
I'll tell you what, see, you guys are advocating for kids.
Nobody, I mean, you know, it's about what you guys do
and the exposure you provide.
And I've admired from day one back in 91 when we played and got our first championship.
And Fox was, you know, side by side with me.
And they've been with me ever since.
So let's sign off, baby.
And rock and roll.
Go Fox.
Absolutely.
Appreciate you, Coach Rollo.
That's Bruce Rawlinson, four-time national champion, not local champion, not state champion, national, natty champion.
And head coach for the modern day monarchs, coach Matt Barclay, Matt Liner, J.T. Daniels, the latest, and Bryce Young.
What, what?
TJ, not Cincinnati, national champions.
National champions.
Anyway, bad.
Let's get a, yeah, let's get one of those trendings, you know, because, you know, when David Gascon comes on and you hear that little jingle right there, it's David Gascon time.
Man, guys, J.T. Daniels was never touched at modern day.
With Roley.
Well, with Big Mackey and all of them, Big G and all,
there ain't nobody going to touch him.
You're throwing 70 touchdowns in a season as like a freshman or sophomore.
That's unbelievable.
Them linemen was throwing five, six linens, 10, 15 yards every play again.
Man, they sat back there in the pocket like it was 7-on-7, that's for sure.
Could you imagine going for modern day where you get no pressure and then go to USC
and just get demolished every play?
That's exactly what that is.
Or the Beavers.
That's true.
Or Oregon State, but we digress.
Look, DJ ain't laughing.
DJ ain't laughing.
Hey, I said it once and I said it again.
You said it three times.
Here we go.
My college season is better than anyone y'all ever had.
I'll leave it at that.
That is not true.
That is very true.
Record-wise, they got one on us.
Okay.
That is very true.
But y'all didn't play the same.
I'm going to let you think that.
A, 12 and 1.
Have you ever lost just one game in college?
Always lost more than one.
My second year, we lost two.
Okay.
I got you by one.
Hey, Plex, they ain't played the same schedule.
Go ahead, Dave.
Go ahead.
Do you want me to name of teams that we beat?
Guys, speaking of beat number nine, Alabama,
loss on the road today at Oklahoma, 66 to 61.
Duke Hammered Clemson, they were all over them early on,
79.53.
Farmers Insurance Open, Patrick Reed is your leader.
He's at minus 12.
Guys back to you.
Well, thank you, David.
And that's such an amazing update and trending.
that you gave us.
Yeah, what you got?
Hey, I really...
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, CliverTaylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media.
Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music.
The Clivert Show isn't just a podcast.
It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.
So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that
George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George
Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek.
And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here.
unpack what went down and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Then you're finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests.
I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
We get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

I want to go back on this whole Bruce Rawlinson situation, and he says he has three to five kids who are seniors in high school, looking to get, you know, that look and get that, you know, extended to education and be able to get a scholarship.
to go to college.
What I took from that, man,
the most unfortunate thing about that,
I think that the state of California
and nationwide,
like they need to do right
by these seniors
who didn't get to play
in their senior year
and give them the opportunity
to come back to high school and play.
That's a great point.
That's an interesting one.
That's a great point.
Hey, because it's like,
because colleges can do it.
College is getting to come back.
You get a medical.
You can come back for your fifth year.
I think the whole country needs to do right by these seniors.
And you know what's funny.
And give them an opportunity to go out and perform.
The majority of the kids that need the extra year because they didn't play,
they're probably kids that are in their original class where a lot of these kids are already holdbacks.
They owe.
If they're giving college athletes the opportunity to play, that's a hell of a little point.
Maybe we need to get some lobbyists out there.
They do, man.
They need to give these kids the opportunity to go out and get that.
Because a scholarship can be the difference in the way you proceed with your life in the future.
That's huge.
Absolutely.
It's a difference between going home or going to junior college or whatever's going to happen with them.
But they need to do right by these seniors and give them the opportunity to go out and play.
I agree.
I like that.
Figure out something where they can get an opportunity to get recruited.
But, man, and this is very real.
And I want to continue on that line of thought on the other side of this break.
What do you do?
Like, let's have a conversation.
What do you do if you didn't have a season this year?
How should you be approaching what you're doing?
Can we give any type of tips or advice on that?
We'll get to that on the other side of this break.
You're listening to Up On Game.
That's T.J. Hushmanzada, Plexico Burris.
I'm Lovar Arington, Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Media.
This is where we keep it real, y'all.
That was a high school football coach on a nationally syndicated show.
That's what we do here on Up On Game.
We'll be right back.

And there they go.
Almost on time this morning.
Mom is coming out the front door strong with a double-arm kid carry.
Looks like Dad has the bags, daughter is bringing up the rear.
Oh, but the diaper bag wasn't closed.
Dipers and toys are everywhere.
Ooh, but Mom has just nailed the perfect car seat buckle for the toddler.
And now the eldest daughter, who looks to be about 9 or 10,
has secured herself in the booster seat.
Dad zips the bag closed and they're off.
Ah, but looks like Mom doesn't realize her coffee cup is still on the roof of the car,
and there it goes!
Oh, that's a shame. That mug was a fam favorite.
Don't sweat the small stuff. Just nail the big stuff.

indicated radio show. Just addressing some of the topics out here. We know our babies are dealing
with mental health issues and dealing with times and feelings of uncertainty based upon what
COVID has created, this pandemic has created. We got four minutes. I wanted to pose the question
to you guys, and I know you kind of touched on it a little bit, uh, Plex, but I just want to throw
this one out at you guys before we get up out of here. It's been another amazing show. We had
Keeley Smith on earlier talking about Deshaun Watson in the situation how he handled it.
We brought Coach Rollo on.
Talk about right now just the current state of where we are with the situation of football being, you know, not played in some areas, but being played in others.
Yeah, let's let's touch on, well, first, we are live from the Farmers Insurance, Fox Sports Radio Studios.
and if you call Farmers today, get a quote.
Tell them we sent you too, by the way.
What do we do, guys?
What would be the advice that you would give if this were your child,
if it were someone you were coaching,
if it's somebody you care about because obviously we care about all of them,
even if we don't even know your name out there and you're listening,
we care about, you know, we want something great to happen for you.
What do we do?
Keep it quick because we got two minutes.
I honestly believe the point.
Plex made is spot on.
If you're able to give these kids another year, and that's if these kids want it,
whether they graduate or not, if you're able to give these kids another year and they want
to take it, they can start working on college course classes while they're in high school.
Give them that year because this affects their future moving forward.
Like entire future.
Entire. Absolutely.
Entire future.
Like could actually be the difference between them getting a free education.
And we're actually the first people to start talking about this.
So somebody needs to, that's listening to this, they need to get the ball rolling.
I just think, look, they need to take consideration of the families.
And this is the difference between the parents paying for education versus their kids getting a free education.
Not just boys, boys and girls.
Right.
Yeah, this is boys and girls.
This isn't just football.
This is nationwide.
Boys, girls, all sports.
We know going into our senior year, we get into the best shape of our lives saying, hey, this is all I have.
This is my senior year.
And now you don't even get a chance to play.
And you're in a bubble.
Like, you can go to Juco or you can get a scholarship to go Division I, and now you don't even get that look.
and your school takes another kid
because he got the opportunity to show itself and play
and you didn't get herself to go out and expose yourself.
So now you're looking at that situation.
You know what?
I'm looking at Juko or not even the possibility of going to college
because I didn't get the chance to play my senior year
and I just don't think that is right.
This will continue to be a topic that we bring up
and we broach and bring to the attention of people.
we actually have some big developments coming with the up on game brand that we will be introducing at some point.
We just want to assist our community.
We're building our community.
And you know what?
It's just very important to us.
And that's why we created Up on Game.
