You know, I've always thought it's very interesting, is we really don't have a problem with great players changing teams and going to great teams. Like nobody was bothered by Mookie Betts going to the Dodgers. And by the way, Trevor Bauer chose the Dodgers.

And they're an overwhelming favorite. Nobody struggles at Alabama or Ohio State when they dominate recruiting again. But it is funny. The NBA, everybody's like uncomfortable. Well, I mean, it guarantees a championship. You don't think the Dodgers are favored. to win the champion the World Series this year? They're stacked.

But we don't have a problem with that. But I saw a story where LeBron James recruited Steph Curry during the All-Star break to play for him. And it's interesting because LeBron has always been able to see around corners very well. He was going to the three-point shot way before most players in the league were. And so LeBron looks at Brooklyn and goes, well, hell, they got three of the best offensive, five offensive closers in the league, and Harden, Kyrie, and Durant.

And LeBron's got, I got Anthony Davis, but I need some jump shots. I need some threes. And so LeBron recruits Steph Curry during the All-Star game. And Steph's up for a contract extension in about a year. And he's like, and if it happened, people would freak out. But that's LeBron saying, listen, if I may have started this mobility thing, well, I'm not going to stop doing it. And LeBron's looking at Durant and Kyrie and Hardin thinking, listen, we need some jumpers.

I got the Biggs. I got Andre Drummond. Maybe he gets re-sign. I got Anthony Davis. I got size Montrez-Herald. What I don't have is threes. And so I would love to see LeBron play with Steph. I really think the Warriors thing is played out.

Like Steph now and Clay, I don't think it's a terrible time for the Warriors. I mean, they were a dynasty for like four years, five years. That's like Shaq and Kobe Lane. Like it's time to, you know, maybe do other stuff. But that's really interesting. And I think the world would implode. Yankee fans never have a problem 10 years ago when their cable network was the only one really making huge money and they would just buy players. Not a single Yankee fan complained about that.

Nobody with Ohio State complains when they dominate Big Ten recruiting for the 19th year in a row. Why is it bothering with the NBA guys? If I was Steph Curry and Draymond's getting older and James Wiseman and Clay's off an injury, Kelly Ubre, or it's like, A.D. LeBron? California, then just move down the freeway. I don't know. I think you start looking at that story and I'm like, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I said yesterday, the only advice I'll give young people, do whatever you can in life to work with better people, better bosses, better coworkers. You'll be happier.

You won't have to carry it. Challenge yourself. Go work at a place where people are really good. But you will find that you will rise to their level, take you about a month. or two and you'll rise to it and you'll just be surrounded by competence. I was frustrated one time in my career. I'm not going to get into it a couple years and I just was surrounded by people that weren't good enough.

It's just not good enough. And it was like management wasn't good enough and this wasn't good enough and that wasn't good enough. And it was like it's a debilitating experience. So go chase competency. I'd love to see Steph with LeBron A.D. I think it'd be fantastic. The world would implode.

literally implode. People would be running around screaming at the top of their lungs. It would be insanity. I would love it. I love that kind of chaos. Well, you and I are mobile. We've moved around, so we're comfortable with it.

Well, also, I mean, the Miami Heat from 2010 and 2014 were the most hated team in the history of sports. Everybody hated them. Everyone. Everyone who knew LeBron's name. Even if you didn't watch basketball, you were like, oh, LeBron James, bad guy.

Bad guy. Left Cleveland. Bad guy. watched. Everyone watched, and it was some of the greatest contents ever. Ever. I mean, the Dallas lost in the finals was unbelievable. It was amazing. All those series were crazy fine. So I 100% are ruining for this. Steph, listen, it's been nice with Steve Kerr, shake his hand. Boom, come down, come down I-5. It's not that far of a drive. NBA Twitter would implode.

Just get on I-5 and drive down. You can use, bring your family so you can use the lane to the left where it takes you about six, seven hours. You can stay at our place for the weekend if you can't find a hotel. Oh, there go. I've got some rooms. Yeah, you're getting the house together. What's up, everyone? Joe here with the news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the herd line. Like L.A. doesn't have enough unbelievable talent. I mean, it's insane. would truly hate this. Like hate, hate, hate, hate. Not be upset.

Like, really would be visibly angry about this. In most American cities, Paul George would be your second or third. Six-time All-Star. Biggest star. He's like our 17th now. I mean, it's just insane how many,

in the last four years in L.A., the talent that's been assembled here in the last half decade, there's never been a city in America with more talent on their sports teams, not even close. Well, the Nets also continue to add to their roster with the recent signings of Blake Griffin and Lamarcus Aldridge, but Brooklyn is not intimidating the Lakers organization. Instead, Jeannie Bus is welcoming the challenge of potentially facing a team stacked with talent.

It brings out the best in us that teams, if teams identify us as the team to beat and they're gearing up to go with at us, you know, head to head. that just that makes us work harder so bring it on I mean this is all done to take down LeBron Do you know Jeannie? I know her a little bit I think she's fantastic Oh she's great she's done she does not get enough credit for

Completely stabilizing the Lakers organization Yeah good common sense lights a room up She's wonderful yeah she's great I haven't had her on the show in a few years You know last time I saw her she you know what she told me She said you look way better on Fox than the other place Because the makeup people, the lighting, everything. I mean, we do have incredible.

I said, Jeannie, I'm aging well. Let's just stop at that. Oh, it's you. Not about the makeup. Now I got this stupid mustache. I'm shaving it off tomorrow. Are you? I think I am.

Well, you're about to go into a long weekend. My sister keeps saying you look like dad. Is that a bad thing? It's fine, I guess. It's boring. I think you should just, if it's making you uncomfortable, just take it down a little bit. I just don't like it anymore. I just don't like it.

I don't like it. Well, the Lakers are 30 and 17 and 4th in the West. LeBron's recovery time is reported to be four to six weeks from the day of the injury, which was March 20th. So we've got a few more weeks before LeBron is back. Time out. He's supposed to be back March 20? No, no, no, no, no, no, from March 20th. Okay.

So four to six weeks from March 20th. Anthony Davis was cleared to advance his on-court workout Friday, but there's still no timeline for a return for him. But yes, all of these moves are being made to take down the champs. I mean, that's how it goes. So James Winston was the first player in NFL history to throw for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in one season back in 2019. But after learning from Drew Brees last year, he is ready to try out a new role as game manager. He said I never wanted to be deemed a game manager, but really that game manager is not a bad piece. That's something I think that just comes with being a professional quarterback, being able to not just only do the things that you can do,

but being able to do the things that you should not do, like what not to do versus what can I do. Well, everybody's kind of a system quarterback. Like, we've got to be fair about this. Tom Brady, to a degree, plays within a system. Everybody has a system. Yeah. When Tom Brady, by the way, moved into this new system with Bruce Ariens the first eight weeks, he wasn't very good. So it's like everybody's, James, to me, doesn't feel like a system guy.

He's a big talent. But I think everybody, Drew Brees in the end, couldn't throw a deep ball. There were literally routes he wouldn't throw. So he was running a system that worked for him and Sean. Well, I think what James is. is saying is because we talk about Baker in this capacity, you know, is Baker, you know, a game manager more than a quarterback? It's, you're working within a system, but I think what he's talking about more is, are you making the right decisions? Like, yes, in a big, when the play

breaks down, are you able to use your feet? Are you able to see what everyone else can't see and make a play out of nothing? Yes, that's the talent. That's when we rely on your skill. But for the most part, you're supposed to call a play and run the play and not make mistakes. Like, that's what the quarterback does. What we deem as spectacular is when Patrick Mahomes can, you know, left hand throw it or fly sideways and, like, do these spectacular things and make big plays. But yes, most quarterbacks, you're just doing what the coach, you're running the play the coach is called.

You're supposed to work within a system. Right. And that's the difference between all those interceptions. So Bruce Ariens said he would get a tattoo with the Bucks won the Super Bowl. Oh, he did? He followed through on that promise. Oh, boy. showed off his new ink today.

Oh my God. He tweeted, I'm a man of my word. When we win the Super Bowl, I will get a tattoo. Well, I got mine and I love it. That's a pretty good one, though. What do you think? His new ink. I think that looks like a, I think that's his ear,

so it's like an upper shoulder tat. You know, my daughter, Olivia, thought the Super Bowl was named after her this year. Oh, that's cute. She said, it's the Live Super Bowl. It is a live Super Bowl. I said, honey, that's not exactly right. It is named after you live.

Don't let him tell you that. I'm getting some new, Some new ink soon. Oh, where? Well, I want to touch up my foot because it's, you know, you're, you take skin off. Doesn't it hurt? It's excruciating, yes. A tat on your foot.

Well, I already have it. But yes, it's excruciating. That's why I put off touching it up for so long. And then I'm going to add to it. All right. I didn't know. Okay. Yeah.

What are you going to put there? Well, I have something for my mom and I have something for my sisters. Somebody has something for my brothers. And just got one not long ago. Really? Yeah. I didn't push for it. But, you know, when you just, when you're, when you're,

married after a while, there's just two opinions. You're right and whatever I said earlier. Yeah, just pick your battles. Just you're right in. Yeah. And then I confirmed that you're right, man, later. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news.

And thanks for stopping by. The Heardly News. Bucke's former NFL player and scout. He's going to take the chair today because he's doing some S-F-Y stuff. I need five minutes of Bucky Brooks. Okay. So I went back and I went the last, since 2000. 2010.

Since 2010, that's a big 11 years. So nothing's now a coincidence. You've got a decade of information. When you were a scout, if you have a decade of information, that's good information. 23 quarterbacks have been drafted in the top 10. 23. Six are home runs. Four of those six are just generational talents.

Cam, Luck, Mahomes, Josh Allen. Herbert and Kyler are darn close. Two of them, Mahomes and Josh Allen, entered playoff teams, which is a real advantage. So these are the guys that have hit. Now, I like Joe Burrell, but he's already hurt. Baker Mayfield, there's a lot, you know what you see in this list? A lot of inconsistency, immaturity, and injuries. There's six home runs.

So we got five guys going in the top 10 this year. Here's my theory. Trevor Lawrence is a transcendent talent. He succeeds. the only other guy that succeeds at a high level, whoever the Niners pick, because it's a winning culture. After that, you can have them.

Am I nuts? Am I too harsh? You're not nuts. So out of those five, there will be two guys to hit, maybe one or two that are okay, and then someone is going to flop. Like, it's just inevitable.

That's what happens. I would normally bank on the Niners, but I need to fast forward and see who they pick. Because if it's Mac Jones, not quite convinced that I'm going to be, that I'm going to get tremendous results on that. And it's no knock to him. Look, he played great at Alabama, what he was asked to do, the way he distributed. He did those things.

But Colin, we've talked about it. In the top five, when you look at the list of top ten, the ones that popped had superpowers. There was something about them. When you watched the game, you were like, oh, man, only have a handful of guys that are walking to earth can do this, either running, throwing. The way that they play the position. I would make the argument, Bucky. We go back to this list.

I just showed you. Let's go back to the guys who have hit since 2010. Because I would say Justin Herbert, four-point biology major, six-six can run with a huge cannon. And then Kyler Murray also feel like mega-talach. Yes. So I would say all six are bizarrely uniquely talented that have worked. Yes. And that should be the standard.

So here's the thing where it's gotten clouded because in the last 10 years or so, we've heard the conversation. Oh, quarterbacks get pushed up the board. that is the wrong way to approach it. You should draft guys who are worthy of being drafted in those spots. Because what happens is when you take a quarterback in the first round, the expectations come along with it. So when you take someone who isn't supremely talented, it doesn't matter because on the outside, we're like, he's a first round pick.

He has to be able to play like a superhero. And so that's where it gets clouded. In this year's class, I believe there's, look, there's four guys that I would bank on. And it's the Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Tray Lance, and whatever. But you know four aren't going to be. All four aren't going to do it. So I'm a little more of the Warren Buffett guy. So I'm going to go with the brand names.

And the two brand names that I've known since they were 17, Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. It has always been that conversation, quarterback one, quarterback two, and has been flipped. They grew up not too far from each other. When you look at those guys, we can talk about Trevor Lawrence because I believe Trevor Lawrence is Justin Herbert Plus. Whatever you think about Justin Herbert, whatever we saw from Justin Herbert last year, I think Trevor Lawrence is that plus a little extra because his leadership ability and all those things pop. And Justin Fields, I think we have, because he's been on the stage for a long time, we have

nitpicked him to death that we're talking about him being maybe the fourth or fifth quarterback, which is ridiculous. If you look at what he did at Ohio State, 78 total touchdowns, look, he had nine interceptions. People remember the two games, Indiana and Northwestern. Oh, he got stuck, he looked this, he looked that. How about we remember the two games against Clemson? When on the same field with Trevor Lawrence, we can make the argument that Justin Fields was the best player on the field.

And so if you think about a guy who plays against elite competition, who dominates elite competition, because they're dominant games that we can point to where he dominated. You bank on those guys. Josh Allen provides a blueprint for how to evaluate Justin Fields. Josh Allen was one who I had questions on. But you see him because of his gifts, he goes to ball. Buffalo they build around it. If someone takes that same approach with Justin Fields, I'll come back

here in two years, and we're going to talk about, oh my God, how do we underestimate Justin Fields? We had the same conversation last year about Justin Herbert. It is about someone taking where they are and building around it. Remember the show American Idol? Yes. Is it still on? I don't even know. It is a different network. Okay. Well, it's a inferior network. So, but my theory on this is, I don't know music. I listen to it like everybody else. But I, in the 10 years, I watched it, I almost agreed always with Simon Cowell because Simon Cowell and I I think had the same sensibility can you hit the note you didn't have to be perfect for 14 seconds but about 1% of the singers would hit the note and you're like okay that's a

that's a professional singer that's my thing with Justin Fields I don't care about your inconsistency I watched you against see I think Trey Lancer Justin Fields are actually going three I don't think it's Mac Jones I think it's I think it's fools gold You know what I think they're trying to do? I think they're trying to work people up who like Mac Jones, and they'll move up and trade and they can move back a slot. I think the Niners are working people. I mean, I think because here's the thing.

We talk about the Shanahan system, and everyone who's played in the Shannon's system, everyone talks about, oh, he wants someone that's like Kurt Cousins. Oh, remember what he did with Matt Schaub and all these things. However, the only guys who have won Super Bowls in that system, John Elway and Steve Young, Hall of Famers, Hall of Fame talents. The reason why we're having all this conversation about the Niners, and we saw Shy McVeigh do it,

is because all these guys coached together and worked together. Madler, Calh, Chanahan, Sean McVe. You know what happens? They look across the field when the Green Bay Packers are playing, and, oh, Matt LaFleu looks like he's having fun, because Aaron Rogers can make all the plays come to life. And so now you're having this rush to, I want someone who can make my plays look like that.

I want someone who can make it right where if I don't call every perfect play, they can get it right. That's what Pat Mahomes is able to do for Andy Reed. And remember, in that Super Bowl, Jimmy Garapolo didn't play bad. He played well. But Pat Mahomes didn't play well for two and a half quarters, three quarters. In the fourth quarter, he brought him back. That had to resonate with Kyle Shanahan,

that he's looking at a guy on the other side who didn't play great for three quarters of the game. And in the fourth quarter, he was so talented that he brought him back. I'm sure he wants something like that. Okay, I got a bunch of stuff to ask here. Can you stick around? Mm-hmm. Be busy today? No, no, not busy.

I think they're nonsense. And I told Joy this earlier is I think you can be swayed by them. 80% of it, I want, here's how I would view it. I'm a scout. 75, 80% is the games. I'm just going to comb over your tape. About 20% of it is the interview. I want to see you.

I want to talk to you. I want to ask you tough questions. I'm about a 1% or on the Pro Day. Did you ever in your career as a scout, Seahawks Panthers, see something in a pro day that changed your opinion? No, it's rare that someone would change your opinion because if you're doing it right, most of your things should be done

by the time you get to the pro day. Because what happens, you fall in love with the wow factor. Someone is a great athlete. You get seduced into thinking that, oh, if we get them in our program, we can coach it up, whatever. One more times than not, players play like they play on tape. That's right.

It can be enhanced a little bit by being in the right scheme or asked to do something that may be a little more conducive to their talents. But typically, you kind of play how you play. I will say the one, thing that stands out to me about a pro day where someone benefited was Matt Castle, working out at USC, had never really taken a snap. He was a tight end.

You know, he just kind of plays. He throws at the pro day. And based on how he performed at the pro day, I remember Matt Russell had Intel and they talked about it and then the Patriots were able to take him. And he actually had a long distinguished career. But more times than not, there's nothing that you get out of a pro day that should change your opinion. In fact, you make more mistakes when you're overly influenced by what- You see someone do at a pro there. Like Billy Bean's the great baseball GM for the A's, and there are times he would not watch the games. He didn't want to be influenced by body shape.

You know, a guy gets on. He's got a 325 on base percentage. And then you'll watch him and you're like, got his feet are terrible. He's got a bad shape. And you're like, no, no, he's got a 325 on base percentage or whatever it is, right? So here's the other thing. Belichick, he goes to all these pro days, Mr. Genius. So there has to be some value.

Right? Yeah, there's tremendous value in what Belichick goes. Belichick will go to the notable pro days, and a lot of times the Patriots aren't arranged to get those guys. That's right. But what he's doing is he's gathering information, not for this time around in the draft, but maybe for next time around when it comes to free agency

or maybe the trade market. We have seen the Patriots rehab a lot of players, players that for whatever reason fall to at one place, they come to New England and they perform well. What Belichick does is he assesses the talent. He gets to know the players. He sees what they're in. able to do in terms of moving around.

And he has a vision for everybody. So when they bring him into New England, he has a clear vision for how a player should perform and those things. It's funny that it doesn't always work for the draft picks, but it's rare that they mess up on someone that they acquire via trade or waiver or whatever. He does a great job of putting guys in the right role for what they're talents. Yeah, he's very good with NFL players. Yes, because the evaluation is easier because it's apples to apples.

When I see you play against other pros, I now just have to determine how do you fit in our scheme? In college, you're projecting more. How is this guy going to continue to develop? What is he going to look like in our scheme? What are the trappings of the NFL lifestyle going to either enhance or bring about from him? So it's a little more variables when it comes to college or pro scouts. What if your joy brought this up earlier? You're Miami.

So you move around and you get a bunch of picks. Now you're at six. And let's say one of these quarterbacks, drop. Atlanta's like, now we don't need a quarterback. And Justin Fields is there at six. Okay, he's the opposite of Tua. Bigger, stronger, more athletic,

good off script. He's more raw, talented. What do you do? You kill Tua if you draft them. You may just light that fuse. That thing's blown up. What would you do? Your GM, Miami, six pick on the clock, Bucky Brooks, go. Justin Fields available. I mean, look, I'm a

Justin Fields fans. So I would say take them and then you have two good quarterbacks. And ultimately you can't go wrong when you have two good quarterbacks. You get off, you auction off the other one who loses the competition. That said, I don't think Miami will even entertain it. I think they're all in on Tuatunga Lolo. And I think it was really important for them to get the other first round pick because they can give to a full opportunity to show what he can do,

build it up around him. And for whatever reason, if it doesn't look like it's going to work, next year they could go back in the draft and put themselves in a position. Bad quarterback draft. It is a bad quarterback class. By the way, you know who the number one kid is right now? Who? The USC kid.

Caden Stearns? No, no. Cate King Slowis. No. I don't know. By the way, no him like him, but he's a B. He's a B prospect. Kid at Liberty is going to be intriguing.

Quarterback at Liberty is intriguing. Sam Howell from North Carolina. He's an underclassman. He's another one. But you're right. Right now, we say there's not star power. remember a year ago we weren't talking about Zach Wilson. So there's always someone that pops up and emerges.

Somebody pop up. It's not a very good quarterback class. Look, we say that every year, oh, I don't know, this and that. And then before you know, we'd be talking about three or four now, we may be overvaluing those. I'm not throwing at you. You used to work for Carolina. Do you enjoy their time there? Yeah, I like the Panthers.

Okay. One of the reasons the Packers don't make a lot of free agent moves or big trades is they don't have an owner. Sometimes you just need a billionaire to go, I want it. David Teper. Three years there. They're boring. Okay, they're the least discussed team in the division. 7-9, 5-11, 5-and-11.

He's an impatient, decisive billionaire businessman. What's the opposite of Teddy Bridgewater? Young, athletic, playmaker can make mistakes. Sam Darnold feels like a very interesting slot for Carolina. He's not running this Bridgewater thing back. They're boring. Look, they've expressed frustration with Teddy Bridgewater and the quarterback position.

They want to get someone who has the ability to close out games. They lost a number of one-score games. That said, I don't know if Sam Donald is that guy. I know we have this love affair with Sam Donald from my draft grades and all those other things, but he's been in the league for three years. Like, we can't keep grading him on a curve. At some point, you kind of want to see him do some stuff to merit. You're going to go, David Teper is a decisive, impatient, his words, billionaire.

Yes. You're going to run that thing back? in a division now with Tampa is easily the best team in the NFC. They are, but we can't get, we can't go into draft. It's Sam Donald or Teddy Bridgewater. Where's Carolina drafting now? They're picking at eight.

They're picking at eight. They're done. They can move up. If you talk about him being impatient and a businessman, he'll be shrewd. He'll find a way to kind of put themselves in a position. I'm Atlanta at four. I'm not letting Carolina in division get my quarterback.

It depends on how much they throw at them. It depends on how big. Like prior to the Deshawn Watson stuff and the stuff off the field escalating. You heard the rumors about them trying to go all in. They want to get a big time quarterback. They want to get a marquee quarterback. I don't know if they would take someone else's leftovers

and say, oh, this is going to upgrade our team if the Jets auction off Sam Donald. I mean, I know that's your guy. I think the most intriguing pick is Atlanta at 4. Yes. Justin Fields is from Georgia. Yes. They can't play their quarterback because Matt's there for two years.

You do not want Carolina getting Justin Fields, in division, the Georgia kid smokes you for a decade. With Matt Rule and Christian McCaffrey, that is a nightmare. They want to upgrade the quarterback position. I think they will make a move to put themselves in a position to upgrade it. That said, I think Atlanta should also consider drafting a quarterback. You're not going to play for two years. Okay.

Can he tackle? You just told me how bad the next year's quarterback class is. And so Matt Ryan, are we convinced that Matt Ryan is going to continue to play at a high level? His cap hit next year if you let him go. Who cares about it? We just saw the Rams. We talked about how prohibitive it was for them to move off from Jared Gough. They moved on.

You can do anything. It's play money. It's monopoly money. It's just a number. Oh, monopoly money. That's what I used to. That's what I always say when it's not my money. It's always monopoly money when it's not mine.
