You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Hi, here we go. Peter King in a few minutes live in Los Angeles. It's the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. We're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, on FS1. Sam Darnold's, a Carolina Panther. So Joy, Taylor, you know that we've been doing this every couple weeks. Yes. When San Francisco moved up to three, I said, okay, let's do a new mock draft
Starting point is 00:02:59 because now we know, they're not moving up to three to take a rest. receiver. Of course. So Carolina getting Sam Darnold yesterday means, okay, they're not going after a quarterback. In my mock drafts, I don't do trades because it's hard enough to guess who people are drafting. I'm not going to make up trades. But now there's a story out this morning. Falcons now are taking calls at number four. Because as we have said, and we've been on this now, the whole offseason, Atlanta doesn't need a quarterback. Atlanta's like the Raiders. Matt Ryan Eric Carr are not the problem. They've been the answer.
Starting point is 00:03:36 They've been carrying bad defenses and arguable coaching for years. Matt Ryan's not the issue in Atlanta. Derek Carr's not the issue. And those guys are the life preserver to sinking ships. So Atlanta now, it's out. They're taking calls, meaning they don't need a quarterback. They've come to terms with, and also with Arthur Smith coming in, offensive guy, he turned around Ryan Tannahill's career.
Starting point is 00:03:58 I think Matt's going to have two great years. And you're going to be looking at yourself going like the Packers are. the hell we do draft a quarterback. We can't tackle anybody. He's also very expensive. Very. So they're going to have to. Like Jeopardy host expensive. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Okay. So let's do another mock draft because we have some certainties now. And it's interesting. A lot of this stuff doesn't even look arguable. So let's do a new mock draft because now Carolina at number eight has their quarterback. San Francisco moving up to three is clearly drafting a quarterback. So here we go. my top 10 mock draft. Okay, number one, this is the easiest one on the board.
Starting point is 00:04:38 Trevor Lawrence Clemson going to Jacksonville. Urban Meyer has a history. Tim Tebow, Alex Smith. Urban Meyer is great with young quarterback. So I think it ensures Trevor Lawrence's success. Number two, New York Jets. We now know, Darnold's out. Zach Wilson's considered the most consistently excellent prospect on the board.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Ford. Again, not a secret. They got a bunch of draft picks. You know, I will say, I don't know how it'll be. He's got a little Aaron Rogers. He can sling it. He's a good athlete. Number three, San Francisco. Okay, I don't buy the Mac Jones stuff. Okay, I've been told John Lynch would not draft Mac Jones. Kyle Shanahan wants a safe pocket, Kirk Cousin-style guy. But Kyle Shanahan doesn't have a winning record. He doesn't have as much leverage as everybody thinks. I think they go and get Justin Fields, who is really talented, a little inconsistent, great high school, great college. I think he's going to be a good pro. I think, and I've said before, Trevor Lawrence is a star. Whoever San Francisco drafts, even Mac Zones, will succeed.
Starting point is 00:05:48 But I think this offense is run-centric in San Francisco. It'll let Justin slowly develop one year behind Garoppolo. Okay, number four. Okay, I'm going to do my first trade ever in a mock draft. Atlanta trades out because what they need is not a quarterback. They need more picks. Denver needs a quarterback trades up. Denver trades up to the number four spot.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Atlanta trades out and get some picks. And Denver takes Trey Lance, the quarterback, who is probably a year away. Didn't play a ton in college. Drew Locke, you let him do what he does. Elway, I've been told in the organization, they're over, Drew Locke. He's the fourth best quarterback in the division. You get Trey Lance. You let him learn.
Starting point is 00:06:35 You put him in OTAs. You put him in camp. You let him watch. He's the future. And I think he has a chance to be great. Number five. Okay, Cincinnati is a conservative franchise. They're going to go and stay in the Big Ten footprint.
Starting point is 00:06:48 They need to help protect Joe Burrow, who's already got a major injury. Rishon Slater, Northwestern, matched up great against Chase Young, play him on the corner, play him on the tackle, play him inside. Terrific player from a smart program, hard worker. great tape. That's an easy one. Number six, Miami. Again, this feels automatic. Kyle Pitts tied-in Florida. There's a reason, they don't want the Tua pick to look like a whiff. They get Will Fuller. Okay, they're going to go get the best tight-end prospect, maybe since Ozzie Newsome. Again, a kid you can play outside. You can play on the line. Not a great blocker, but again,
Starting point is 00:07:21 if Tua can't move the sticks with Kyle Pitts and Will Fuller and some of their receiving talent, then you got the wrong quarterback. Number seven. Detroit needs everything, but Kenny Galday's gone. I think it's unfair to Jared Gough to give him no weapons. Jamar Chase, best available athlete on the board, LSU. Every scout I've talked to and two GMs has said, this is the most talented receiver. Will he be the best in the NFL?
Starting point is 00:07:48 He's an NFL player. He was an NFL player last year playing college football. Number eight, Carolina. They got Sam Darnold. They get a break here. They get a true left tackle, Penae, Sewell, Oregon. He's a real left tackle. By the way, they have two huge needs in Carolina now, left tackle and corner.
Starting point is 00:08:07 And they may draft a couple of corners, and this draft's got some really good ones. Penae-Soul, Carolina. Atlanta now, trade with Denver, goes to nine. They need a ton of help. Let's start with Patrick Sardana Corner. They need an edge rusher. They could use another linebacker. They need corners, Certains, and Nick Saban Corner.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Played in the best conference in college football, a little bit of a playmaker, not just your typical corner. He's got a little Akib to leave. Like he'll take it and run to the house. And number 10, Dallas. Now, this is interesting. On a phone conversation with the general manager Friday, he said the fastest rising defensive player on the board, J.C. Horn, the corner from South Carolina, Joe Horn's son, hyper aggressive, really athletic, long.
Starting point is 00:08:58 He is the defensive player that is flying up the draft. board. So I'm going to go with the cowboys who need a corner. Their linebackers are fine. They need an edge rusher. They need a corner and a safety. So there's my mock draft. Look at it top 10. And again, first time I've ever done a trade, I do not buy the Mack Jones to the Niners. Many have, but I think it's Lynch wants Fields or an athlete. And I think Kyle likes the more. We know Kyle like Kirk Cousins, wants the more pocket guy. So there's my top 10. Maybe it's a bunch of hooey and makes no sense,
Starting point is 00:09:35 but I host a talk show on this stuff's fun. I do think Carolina now gets a little bit of a break. Absolute, because they're right tackling Carolina is good, and their center when he's healthy as talented. Their guards are average. But left tackle, they lock it up for a long time. Peter King, Football Morning in America, NBCSports.com is now joining us. Hall of Fame voters since 92 on a member of the board selectors.
Starting point is 00:09:58 All right, forget my goofy draft board. Let's start with this. I think it was your story. I'm going to look it up here real quick. Peter King, it says here, doesn't believe the Patriots make a move for Jimmy Garapolo. Expand on that for our audience. Why do you believe that, Peter? Well, first of all, Colin, it takes two to tango.
Starting point is 00:10:19 I don't see any way that the 49ers, unless they are blown away with an offer for Jimmy Garapolo, we're going to trade him. Why would you do something? in the first four years of the Lynch-Shanahan partnership atop the 49ers, they've had one great year. One out of four, they went 13 and 3. The other three years, they won 6, 6, 6, and 4 games. And you know why they won 6, 6 and 4 games?
Starting point is 00:10:48 They were thin at quarterback when they really needed one. Yeah. Okay? Why in the world would you trade a guy who won 13 games and who may not last. But why would you do that and then go with another very cheap, like, backup, along with the guy who you're going to draft? It doesn't make any sense to me to do that.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Number two, why would the Patriots not want Jimmy Garoppolo right now? Because they have to be like everybody else. They're not sure about Jimmy Garapolo. Do they want to hand the football to a guy who's missed 23 games in the last? last three seasons. Yeah, he's missed, you know, part of ability is availability. And the other thing is, do you want to hand the ball to a guy who didn't have a particularly great Super Bowl and who was slumping in the playoffs the year that he made the Super Bowl?
Starting point is 00:11:46 Are you positive that if Jimmy Garoppolo suddenly becomes an iron man, that he's a great quarterback? I'm not. So I just, it makes no sense, especially. If the Patriots can, let's just say, they're at 15 right now, Colin, what happens if one of those quarterbacks, let's say Mac Jones, let's say Justin Fields, is there at, let's say, 10 when the Cowboys pick, trade your one next year to go get your quarterback of the future,
Starting point is 00:12:22 if you believe in them. Yeah. Because I think if you don't, a team like Chicago at 20 very well, could. Yeah, and it should be noted. There's more young general managers that are more aggressive. We've already seen all these trades pre-draft. We've got three weeks to go. It's just a different culture. I mean, we've seen analytics change how baseball and basketball look, and we've seen young general managers, your less needs. They're just hyper-aggressive. It's a new world, Howie Roseman. So I'm with you. I do think New England will draft a quarterback, and like you,
Starting point is 00:12:53 it could be on draft day. Now, the Sam Darnold trade, we got lucky. We called this one, And it wasn't that difficult because my takeaway is David Tepper has not only they're spinning their wheels at quarterback, but they were kind of a boring franchise. I said the other day, if Christian McCaffrey was hurt and Carolina was on your television, you'd turn the channel. They're not interesting. And I think David Tepper at least wants interesting. And I think Donald's bigger arm, more athletic.
Starting point is 00:13:21 So it makes a ton of sense to me. Did you think Carolina gave up too much to get him three picks? I thought Carolina gave up too much, but if he plays well, they got him cheap. Yeah. It's just, you know, there's a lot of tarnish on Sam Darnold right now, and it's clear the Jets were having a hard time getting better than mediocre compensation for him. So to stand by what you're telling teams and to basically keep demanding and demanding and knowing that David Teper's an impatient guy, and he's probably going to say, just do what you have
Starting point is 00:14:02 to do to get him. You know, to get a two, four, and six for Sam Darnold, even though the two is next year, and look, a lot of people would say, I'd rather have a two next year. There's going to be a lot more certainty with the, you know, whatever it is, the 44th pick in the draft next year, than there is this year. Now, even though they did give up too much, you know, the truth. tributary to this story, Colin, really, is that, you know, now, you know, last year the Carolina Panthers gave a lot of money to Teddy Bridgewater. Now they got to give them away to somebody.
Starting point is 00:14:39 Yeah. And so to me, I think it's really important, you know, that they come out this year and coach Sam Darnold really well and surround him. And I agree with you. If I were them, I would go for one of the tackles in this draft. I wouldn't trade that pick. I would take one of those tackles, solidify that spot for a long time. By the way, Teddy Bridgewater is interesting because when you start looking at teams
Starting point is 00:15:06 that need a quarterback, most are going to get it in the first three or four picks. Marcus Marriota re-signed with the Raiders. Darnold's now off the market. Deshaun, who knows, it's pretty slim pickings in Bridgewater. I mean, let's be honest. Alex Smith last year struggled
Starting point is 00:15:22 and went five and one with. Washington. Your thoughts on, I mean, is Ryan Fitzpatrick what you roll with? Ninth team, 17 years? Where do you think Bridgewater? Give me a team. I mean, Washington feels like a potential landing spot for Teddy. I don't see it, Colin. I don't think anybody right now views Teddy Bridgewater after being handed the keys to Carolina. And after Carolina basically saying we don't we're not interested in keeping you after one year who's going to give Teddy Bridgewater money and who's going to give Teddy Bridgewater the keys to their offense I question whether anybody would to me the best place for Teddy Bridgewater and you'll laugh
Starting point is 00:16:09 the best place is Seattle because you know Seattle gives the kind of insurance to john Schneider and Pete Carroll, they need if the Russell Wilson thing continues to go off the rails. Well, it's not, I don't know if they could afford them. I don't know what their cap situation is. It's not crazy that if Russell, because I've said this yesterday, Peter, and I really believe this. I don't think Russell Wilson's finishing his career in Seattle. I think the Seahawks feel a little trapped right now because there's not much on the market, injured guys, Garapolo. I just know this, that Russell Wilson and his people were really upset that Snyder and Pete Carroll went and watched Josh Allen at his Wyoming workout. They weren't happy. They went and watched Trey Lance at his workout.
Starting point is 00:17:00 I'm not saying that relationship severed, but I think it's uncomfortable. So, I mean, I don't think Russell Wilson ends his career as a Seahawk. Your thoughts on that? I mean, if I had to guess right now, I would agree with you. a lot of things can happen. And look, you know, if you look at the history of quarterbacks and teams that went south and then either got saved or continued to go south, this looks more likely than not that it'll continue to go south and it'll go somewhere else.
Starting point is 00:17:37 But I continue to come back to the way that Marshaun Lynch basically, you know, it's, He made things really uncomfortable for Pete Carroll. Pete had a hard time with Marshawn in the last year or so when he was there because he was very, very hard to manage, very hard to coach, stopped talking to a lot of people in the building, was just a really problem player late in his career. The public loved him, but the people internally didn't love him. And in my opinion, I don't think the Russell Wilson thing has gotten to that point yet.
Starting point is 00:18:14 Pete, Carol, and John Schneider are very smart. And I think they're going to find a way at least for one year to scotch tape it together until they can get to next offseason. Yeah, that's what I believe. I think they'll figure it out Gabe Jackson, Gerald Everett, your re-sign, your fullback, Carson. They'll make it work. Maybe they appease him and get Antonio Brown for a year. But I do feel that your last sentence is the true one, which is I think they'll scotch tape it. I just, I think this year they're looking at the quarterbacks available.
Starting point is 00:18:43 I don't think there's anything out there. And I think they feel a little trap. So, you know, it is interesting. All right. Peter King, go to NBCSports.com, football morning in America. Hall of Fame Board of Selection since 1992. And Peter, we appreciate you stopping by. All right, Colin, thank you.
Starting point is 00:19:02 I got some thoughts on the Garoppolo to New England. It is getting easier as I did the mock draft. You can see stuff now falling into place. I don't buy the Mac Jones. situation at all to San Francisco. I mean, I think they'll argue back and forth, but Kyle Shanahan doesn't have a winning record. He doesn't have that much power. It's not like Sean McVeigh, who has a ton of power with the Rams. He's been to a Super Bowl. He lost a Belichick, but a winning record. McVeigh is held in a certain oar in Los Angeles. He looks like L.A. He's a star.
Starting point is 00:19:35 Everybody in L.A., you know, Stan Kronky loves him. Les Need loves him. Shanahan's got to start winning some games. And he's got a quarterback now that can't stay healthy. So I think the draft is getting kind of easier to figure out. A lot of people think Detroit's going to go defense, but the weird thing about this draft is the best players, quarterback's, offensive linemen, and receivers, those should be your top 10 picks. Micah Parsons is a great linebacker. Outside of that, there's not a lot of defensive players that are top 10 worthy. It's a good year for corners, but you could get a really great corner at 13, 14, 15, 16. So I think this year's top 10, barring massive trades.
Starting point is 00:20:17 I don't think we'll see a ton. I think Atlanta's going to trade out from four. I think Denver's the obvious. When you're in a division with Mahomes, Derek Carr and Justin Herbert, you can't have Drew Locke. Drew Locke maybe works somewhere else, the AFC South. But that division, you're just 0 and 6 right out of the shoot. Because nobody's stopping anybody.
Starting point is 00:20:35 I mean, Tampa's defense last year at the end was insane. But by and large, you've got to score points to win. You got to score points to win. Buffalo's defense wasn't great last year. They end up, you know, look around the NFL. It wasn't all great defenses at the end of the year. It's when Tampa's offense clicked that they took off. Their defense was good all year.
Starting point is 00:20:55 When the offense clicked, they took off. All right. Mark Slareth next hour. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search Herd to listen live or on demand when, you'd like.

Each week, we dive head first into the complex power of secrecy. how it shapes our identities and relationships, and how it ultimately can reveal to us our truest selves.
Starting point is 00:21:47 My daughter, she's pretending she doesn't know, but is trying to cook and feed me and keep me alive because I wasn't eating anything, and me pretending like everything was fine. He kind of shoved me out of the way and said, move. And he went out the front door, and he jumped in a car and drove off, and that was the last time I saw him.

Starting point is 00:23:55 But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor. I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hippocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Sike!
Starting point is 00:24:12 I'm a comedian. I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant and recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream a chicken suit.
Starting point is 00:24:30 Hey, cream, cream a chicken suit. This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from a Hypocrite as part of the Mike Coutura podcast network available on the IHartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. My wife's so funny. She had a dream last night. She was talking in her sleep last night.
Starting point is 00:24:51 She doesn't normally. She did last night. So I texted her to this morning. I'm like, well, you were just going, big party or something. And she's like, we end up getting invited to a party with Prince Charles, Camille. And who are the kids that live up in Montecito, Megan? Herri and Megan. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:12 She goes, we've got. Got invited to a party and Prince Charles started picking on his son and I stepped in between it. And you, me, Megan and William, we went to their house and made a cake, a rainbow cake. And I'm like, what is wrong with you? And she said, well, I took the sleeping medication last night and it gives me crazy dreams. I had crazy dreams last night too. I talk on my sleep as well. Oh, you do?
Starting point is 00:25:39 Yeah. And sometimes I actually sleep with my eyes open. Oh, come on. do that. Yeah. Not like wide open. You sleep with your eyes open. They're just like kind of low like this. Okay, that's a horror film. That is honestly No.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Not going on up here, you know? Sometimes just decides to do what it wants. All right. I can't get that out. Joy is sleeping with her eyes open right now. Okay. I'll be talking to my sleep all right. Joy with the news. No. No. No. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:26:09 Well, we were waiting to find out what was going to happen with Sam Darnold. found out. The Panthers traded him. So this is signaling the likely end of Teddy Bridgewater's time with the franchise. The GM did not rule out keeping him saying they were going to find the best place for him, whether it be in Carolina or somewhere else. But the team is reportedly letting Bridgewater talk to other teams to potentially facilitate a trade. So they are going to try and do right by Teddy. He was a 4-11 last year, 69% completion percentage,
Starting point is 00:26:44 3700 yards, 15 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 5 rushing touchdowns. They've made it pretty obvious that they were looking to move on to him. Matt Ruhl and Joe Brady, like with Joe Burrow at LSU, right? They want to throw the ball down the field. That's where they went and got Robbie Anderson, who's a burner. Sam Darnold likes to throw the ball down the field. Sometimes to Adam Gase's chagrin,
Starting point is 00:27:06 But Teddy's not a down the field guys like Alex Smith. He's cautious. Yeah. Derek Carr can be this sometimes. So right now, Teddy's skill set doesn't click with what Matt Rule wants, which, and this was at Baylor, he wants to throw it over the top. And Donald Will. Well, also, Teddy never felt like the future of the franchise. He felt like a bridge.
Starting point is 00:27:26 And at this point is a bridge or, you know, lower level starting quarterback or high-level backup quarterback at this point in his career. So it's not entirely shocking, especially considering the way that the season went, that they weren't interested in moving off from him. I don't know what Sam Darnold will be or what he is right now. I am more optimistic as you are about Sam Darnold than I think most people are. I think you have to take into consideration that he was with Adam Gays and it was an extremely dysfunctional situation. Yeah, it's interesting. I think Darnold is a 70-30, 75-25 going to work. Now, Super Bowls, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:28:04 but I'm 75% Darnold, no toxicity, coaching, receiver, back. I mean, people, and I will say this, New York can be incredibly harsh. New York fans, New York fans, over 50% were in the keep Darnold. Oh, yeah, I know a lot of Jets fans that were like, no, no, no, we're going to keep Donald and we're going to draft a bunch of players. I'm like, no, you're not. But I think it's interesting that you're still optimistic about him. Yeah, I mean, most fan bases just get the bumming.
Starting point is 00:28:34 out of town. Yeah. New York sports fans watched Eli's struggle for years until he got the right coach and the right help, right? And he matured. So it tells you something that according to reports, about 60, 40 in the building, 40 wanted to keep Darnold. Like, they knew it wasn't Darnold, but it's so hard.
Starting point is 00:28:55 I mean, go just look at what Cleveland's roster looked like because you're not paying Baker anything. When you don't pay your quarterback, when they're on the rookie contract, it is four years of doing whatever you want in free agency. Look at Cleveland's roster right now. Well, that's why I said there was no way they were keeping him. And it doesn't make sense for the Jets to draft Zach Wilson and keep Sam Darnold because you can get so much for Sam Darnold, which they did get a good trade for him. So I think it's best for all parties. I'm really interested in seeing Sam Donald with Christian McCaffrey. He's going to have a lot of weapons. Obviously, we know they went heavy
Starting point is 00:29:27 defense in the draft, all defense in the draft last year. So I think this is a great situation for both parties. It's a clean slate start over. Obviously, this leaves Teddy Bridgewater kind of out, but the way that the market is, he's going to end up somewhere and get an opportunity again, because as we know, there's always injuries and things happen throughout the season as well. Now, he did sign a three-year, $63 million contract this off season, so he's due $17 million in base salary this year with $10 million guaranteed and $20 million in 2022, and it'll have a cap hit of $23 million next season. So it's not like he's the most affordable backup quarterback, so he probably will be somewhere where they need a starting quarterback.
Starting point is 00:30:04 But I think this is a great situation for everyone. So the Bengals are in a great spot with a fifth pick in the draft. They don't need a quarterback and are in a position to get one of the top overall players this year. And director of player personnel, Duke Tobin, is not willing to risk missing out on one of those talents. We feel we're in a good spot. And, you know, we'll be careful not to get overly greedy and get out of a spot to where we maybe lose a premier player. and we feel like we'll get one of the premier players in this draft. But we feel that there are enough guys worthy of the fifth pick in the draft
Starting point is 00:30:38 to get a real guy that we feel comfortable with. That also hits us at a position of need. A little bit of different messaging coming out of Cincinnati than we're hearing from Atlanta at the fourth pick. We know Cincinnati is not an overly aggressive risk-taking franchise. Listen, the Midwest, I mean, the Colts are frugal, Green Bay is reluctant to spend on free agency. There is an ethos in the Midwest.
Starting point is 00:31:04 It is a more conservative part of the country. Look where they vote. The coast, there's more money. You take more chances. There's an optimism on the coast that, all right, we screwed up, but we make so much money out here. The Rams operate. That Philly operates.
Starting point is 00:31:17 So it's just a different mindset. In the Midwest, it's just different. It's a more conservative area. The Bengals have a history of being, I mean, the Cleveland Browns are operating, like a coastal team. They're taking big swings everywhere. That's not, your Pittsburgh's loyal to its players and Green Bay doesn't want to spend on the field. That's the Midwest. Cleveland is unique in that space. Oh, God, they're going all out, as they should.
Starting point is 00:31:43 Yes. I mean, look, we didn't expect the Bengals to move. I don't necessarily know that it makes sense for the Bengals to move because they can get one of those top players and they do need a high-level offensive linemen. If, if somebody... Looking at the draft order, like, is somebody that's a partner that you'd be willing to trade with because they do need one of those top talents. Yeah, I mean, this is, I wouldn't, now, now, if the Falcons can't trade their fourth pick and don't take a quarterback and then you're Cincinnati at five, then teams start battling on draft aid to get up five. Now, and you may only have to slide back to a, you know, Broncos at nine, well, the chances are you could get one of those tackles. By the way, it's also a very good.
Starting point is 00:32:28 year for tackles and you've got a left tackle in Cincinnati. So you could you could slide and get a right tackle. Soule and Slater, Slater's actually not an ideal, a little small for a left tackle. So they'd probably move him right tackle or interior. But you could slide down and get Austin Vera Tucker at 9, 10 and he can go tackle or guard. So Cincinnati's lucky. There's three really high-end o linemen. But then there's about another eight, one. Wyatt Davis at Ohio State that would start for Cincinnati tomorrow. Yeah. Perhaps if Atlanta doesn't make an off-season pre-draft trade
Starting point is 00:33:06 than a day of trade might make more sense for the Bengals, but I still think that they're probably going to say that they are. God, I'd love to be a GM. Oh, my God. You sleep with your eyes open. I want to be a GM. Two things established. Finally, Robert Kraft admitted that the Patriots haven't done a great job
Starting point is 00:33:21 in the draft over the last few years. One of those misses was Nikiel Harry, their first run pick in 2019. According to Albert Breer, Bill Belichick ignored his personnel department in picking Harry. He didn't listen to their input and instead took Harry based on his performance during a non-workout visit and Belichick's relationship with Harry's college coach Todd Graham. Isn't that interesting? Other receivers like Debo Samuel and A.J. Brown were said to be preferred by the team scouts. Todd Graham was the head coach of Arizona State during Harry's first two years there and swayed Bill Belichick. Okay. So this is what I've been told by two different sources for the last two years,
Starting point is 00:34:01 that Belichick around January, late January, kind of is like Scouts, I appreciate it. I'll take it from here. And has ignored more than once his scouts whims. So this is, I've been told this before. So the fact that this is out now, and also Herm Edwards, a Belichick friend. So Todd Graham and Herm Edwards both got in Bill's ear. And that makes sense because Bill is obviously entrenched in his team and the NFL. So it's not like he's paying much attention to college football at that level to be scouting himself. That's why you have a scouting department that you should generally pay attention to. So this isn't really a reflection of, I mean, maybe we just always felt like Patriots were not very good, but maybe they are.
Starting point is 00:34:49 And Belichick's just not listening to them and relying on his relationships in college football, which I do think that taking, You know, listening to coaches who've worked with guys is important. I do think that you should factor that into your evaluation when it comes to personality, when it comes to, you know, what is this guy? Like, how does this guy like to be coached? You know, things that you can't really see when you're watching tape, the personal side of things. But you can't let that decide it because coaches are very rarely going to give you a blunt,
Starting point is 00:35:20 honest, like don't take him. Because if that ever gets back to players and that's going to kill the recruiting. I don't, you know, and Belichick's relied on urban. and Saban and his relationship with guys. I'll give you an example. When I sat in the Chargers draft room with Tom Telesco, and I sat there and I watched how it operated, Telesco, they've been a very good drafting team,
Starting point is 00:35:39 got up multiple times, walked over to his scouting director, walked over to Randy Mueller, right before Picks. So this is a GM that went to his scouts. Yeah. And he would go, like, I mean, I just sat there and they invited me to just observe the draft.
Starting point is 00:35:56 They started freaking out when I grabbed my phone and text my wife. They're like, who you, who you texting? I'm like, Bella check. What do you? But I watched him and it was very interesting. Tom totally scouting director, regional. He wanted them all in the room because he relied on. This is what you do.
Starting point is 00:36:14 If I was a GM, I think when you under my, even on this show, there's stuff I don't do. I don't book guests. I think great leaders have the ability to delegate. They hire great people and then delegate to them. You can't do everything. When you try and micromanage, you're diluting your abilities to do what you're supposed to do, and you're undermining, to your point, people who have great skill in what they're doing and their advice. Like, that's what you pay them for.
Starting point is 00:36:38 That's what you have a scouting department for, so they can do that work. And then obviously you weigh that with your own information as well. But when you disregard them, you wind up in situations like this. Good stuff, Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The herd lie news. Okay, Peter King says Garoppolo's not going to news.
Starting point is 00:36:55 New England, I actually think with Carolina's move with Sam Darnold and San Francisco up to three, I think it's pretty clear what New England's going to do at quarterback, and that is coming up next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the I heart radio app. Hey, I'm John Middlecoff, and I host the three-and-out podcast. Starting point is 00:41:33 app. For hot water that never runs out, Navi and tankless water heaters, local rebates, save hundreds. Tankless made simple.com, tankless made simple.com. So Peter King said he doesn't think the Patriots are going to go after Jimmy Garoppolo. My prediction
Starting point is 00:41:51 is, and I think it's pretty outlined here. Cam Newton rest of this year, they draft Mac Jones. I don't buy Mac Jones as going three to San Francisco. I don't. So every year, there's a guy that drops in the draft, a talented guy that drops. Mac Jones, to me, is going to drop a little. Why? The guy that drops in the draft, A, plays a position where most of the league doesn't need him, like a quarterback. Or he's the least talented person in a group of his position. Or he's a least talented person in a group of his position. Or he's a a hotly debated prospect where half the league likes them and half doesn't, and the teams that do don't have the draft order.
Starting point is 00:42:28 They don't have the draft spot. So if San Francisco doesn't take Mack Jones, Atlanta's not going to go and draft another pocket quarterback. That's the knock on Matt Ryan. He can't create anything off script. They're not doing that again. Carolina at 8 has darnled. They're not going back to a guy that's a pure pocket quarterback.
Starting point is 00:42:46 That's not what they're going to do. So you end up with Denver at 9. I got to be honest with you. I think Denver's going to move up and get Trey Land. or Justin Fields. I don't think, you think Mack Jones in a division with Mahomes and Justin Herbert and he can't move? Elway likes athletes.
Starting point is 00:43:03 That's why I went and got Paxton Lynch. That's where they drafted Drew Locke. John Elway is telling you what he likes. Guys with arms that can move. Drew Locke's got a big arm. Paxton Lynch had a big arm. Neither I think is mature enough, but they can move. They got big arms because that's what Elway could do.
Starting point is 00:43:19 Elway sees a little bit of himself in these quarterback. Mac Jones is the opposite of Elway. Stationary, decent arm not great, not a special athlete. Denver's not going and getting him. So what does that mean? That means is Mac Jones is going to fall. And I think he's going to fall into that 10, 12. Dallas isn't taking a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:43:39 The New York Giants of 11 aren't taking a quarterback. This feels like New England going out and getting Mac Jones, who can play behind four-year Cam Newton. Josh McDaniels has had great success with the last, and current best pocket quarterback Tom Brady. That's the offense they're comfortable with. They went and got tight ends and receivers, so there are some legitimate targets.
Starting point is 00:44:00 Also, New England's O line is always top five to six in the league. Mac Jones, like Alabama, will be protected. So that one feels like to me, New England sits around, Mack Jones drops a little and ends up going to New England. Another story that came out is that, you know, it's always interesting to me is that if you do just marginal homework and marginal reading.
Starting point is 00:44:24 You know, you can look at history and it'll tell you things not to do. Right? Like we all know, there's certain places, I tell my kids this all the time. You know, one of the reasons it's great to read and be curious, because you'll find certain paths that are easier and certain paths you want to avoid.
Starting point is 00:44:40 History tells you what doesn't work over time. And I'm always amazed when receivers go diva or needy. Because it always ends poorly. I mean, you can have four or five great years. Dez or T.O. or A.B. But it always ends the exact same way. You don't make the money you want to make.
Starting point is 00:45:00 You wear out about 90% of the teams in the league. You have a handful of teams that want you. And in the end, you feel like I should be getting way better offers. So basically what has recently happened is Antonio Brown wants the Buccaneers to resign him, and they have resigned everybody except A-B. And there's a reason for it. he's 32, he's got baggage, it's certainly not a position of need, it's a position the college football gives you a ton of, how valuable is he? He didn't play against Green Bay both times last year and Tampa beat him both times.
Starting point is 00:45:37 And let's be honest, his personality has been at best a little unstable in recent years. So to me, he's an unnecessary risk. But it is fascinating to me that A, B, it always ends this way. I mean, we never thought it was going to end like Larry Fitzgerald, refined, or Calvin Johnson, great and money stored away and I got the power and I'm out. We didn't think it was going to end like Heinz Ward where he left and he was beloved in the community. But this is how it ends if you're a pain in the butt. I had somebody give me great advice years ago.
Starting point is 00:46:14 Great advice. They said, you never want to be the biggest pain in the blank at your workplace. place. You can be the second, third, fourth biggest pain in the rear. Don't be the biggest pain in the butt. And now a lot of you can say, well, A, B was on his best behavior. Yes, briefly. But if you asked everybody upstairs in that front office, you know, one guy is going to go sideways next year. It ain't going to be gronk. It's not going to be Levanti David. It's not going to be Donovan Smith. It's not going to be Ronald Jones. Not going to be Brady. If they're There was one guy that you said next year, yeah, this certain player just got kind of crazy and was a little disruptive.
Starting point is 00:46:58 It would be this. So, I mean, I never thought it was going to end like Larry Fitzgerald. But whenever, you know, this is on AB. This is why the market form is tiny. Seattle may be interested. I don't think Seattle wants him. I think Russell Wilson does. Baltimore may be interested.
Starting point is 00:47:15 Again, I don't think Harbaugh is. I think it's a good receiver class in Baltimore's. Doesn't have a lot of needs. Receivers, it'll probably draft a couple. It's a great receiver class. So, you know, so often life will tell you what to do and what not to do. Just pay attention. And it's just, listen, I'm not saying players don't get upset.
Starting point is 00:47:35 But if you go, if I said needy wide receiver, I can list like 15. Has any ended well ever? It's always like very few offers. You're not making what you want. You don't have any leverage. And, I mean, Tampa, Tampa showed you. they signed everybody. And by the way, the people they re-signed were expensive.
Starting point is 00:47:55 Chris Godwin, it's probably going to make more franchise tag than he would get on the market. Shaq Barrett's good. He got a lot of money. A Levante, David, I'd pay for. But this is how it ends. So just, you know, sometimes you don't have to say everything you think. A, B. rush to social media. Social media can be your friend.
Starting point is 00:48:15 It can also be your enemy. And it's way often, more often, your enemy than your ally. Stay off that stuff. Everybody knows you want to be back. Stay off. Oh, the utter thought, the Teddy Bridgewater story. So everybody's saying, where's Teddy Bridgewater going to go? So because I so brilliantly predicted Sam Darnold to Carolina,
Starting point is 00:48:38 ask yourself this. Who needs a quarterback? Jags, Jets, Niners. They're going to draft one. Atlanta's got the fourth pick. They're taking calls. It won't be them. Denver's going to move up.
Starting point is 00:48:48 Most people think now I'm not the only one. moves up and takes one. So who needs a quarterback? Well, it's New England. Their standard is Super Bowls. I don't think Teddy Bridgewater is what they see as a Super Bowl quarterback, not in a division with Josh Allen. Chicago. Well, they already got mocked for Andy Dalton. Getting a quarterback in a windy city against Aaron Rogers that doesn't throw the ball downfield, that would be just another dose of bad PR. Pittsburgh. Again, great wide receiver talent, guys that can run. You want a guy that throws it deep. That's not Teddy Bridgewater. Saints had him, let him walk. Denver. If you got Teddy Bridgewater, he'd still be the fourth best quarterback in the division.
Starting point is 00:49:38 And Elway doesn't tell you that's what he's looking for. He likes big athletic, big arm guys that can move. Paxton Lynch, Drew Locke. I mean, even Brock Oswald. I mean, even Brock Oswald. Whiteer, big guy. Elway tells you what he likes. It's not Teddy Bridgewater. In my opinion, Washington's the fit. They're not paying Ryan Fitzpatrick a ton. And who have we always compared Teddy Bridgewater to, Alex Smith, who went five and one last
Starting point is 00:50:03 year and didn't play particularly well and wasn't healthy? So if Alex Smith with that defense and that cruddy division can go five and one, Teddy Bridgewater feels like a pretty good fit in Washington to me. Teddy's either a really expensive backup or a cheap starter. He's a perfect bridge quarterback for a year in Washington. Hour three next.
