This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.

and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

John Lynch has just got inducted
15 years in the NFL, I had the good
fortune to cover him in Tampa,
the young John Lynch out of Stanford.
He became a football Hall of Famer in the last year.
He is the GM of the 49ers, and he has been very aggressive.
From getting Jimmy Garoppolo to going out and signing Trent Williams to moving up in the draft.
He is the wave of new young general managers with a go-for-it mentality.
And John Lynch, my buddy 49er GM, is now joining us live on the phone.
Let's start with this, is that when you make, when you took that job,
you said, John, I'm going to make sure this organization. I don't want anything leaked because
no good business has leaks. And you kept the Traylands thing undercover for a month. Is it hard?
How do you create a culture where literally nothing gets out on Garapolo, on Trent Williams?
These are huge franchise altering moves. How do you create that culture?
Well, that's a good question because in today's world, I mean, I thought it was one of the great achievements ever because it's so hard to keep things quiet. And oftentimes it's innocuous. It's not someone like, you know, it's not like you have a mole in the building. It's someone who flippantly says something to their wife. Their wife talks to somebody else. And next thing you know, this thing is it's like that old experiment where you talked in the cup and it's passed down. And sometimes the, you know, you know,
you know, the end result is different than the beginning, but stuff does leave.
And I think on this one, it was somewhat easy because really what Kyle and I did was kind of keep it
between us. And that wasn't not trusting our own people. It actually was in an effort to give the
process the do that it deserved. And so, you know, what I'm saying is fairly early on, Kyle and I had
zeroed in on Trey. But I think if everybody in our building knew that, it'd be hard.
to get people's true opinions. I think people's opinions would gravitate towards ours, and you try
to hire people with conviction and all that, but human nature says that if you're the leaders of the
franchise, people at some point are going to gravitate. We wanted to hear people's real opinions,
and we wanted to really give the process the full and thorough process that it deserved,
and I think that allowed us to. And we didn't want to leave anything the chance. We wanted it to be as
thorough as possible. There were challenges in a COVID world. But ultimately, we didn't tell,
you know, like we told our owner the week of, we told the people in the draft room, I think,
when the second pick was on the board, that that's who we were taking.
Wow.
A trust, that's just the way we had gone that far. We wanted to see it all the way through.
And at the end, it was really the motivation was to let Trey hear it for the first time from us,
from no one else, because I think that's a great surprise that he'll have with them,
the rest of his life. There were stories out there, John, and I've always thought this. Joy and I
should not agree on everything. If we're doing a show, I don't want everybody to agree with me. I just
want your opinion. And there were reports that, hey, Kyle, like this guy and you like that guy.
Did it start, you said you zeroed in on him early? Were there initial disagreements or did you
get a line pretty quick with Kyle? We were aligned pretty quick on this one. I mean, I think,
I think, you know, for a general manager, you obviously have an entry point that's a lot earlier than the head coach, because the head coach is coaching his team.
So, you know, like I first started watching Trey Lance, you know, two years ago, you know, when he was having that great year in 19.
And, you know, then I think last year in Arizona, you really start focusing in on people.
But, you know, like, you know, people talked a lot about Mack Jones.
Mac Jones had an unbelievable year, and I think does some things that are incredibly, that translate incredibly well, incredibly accurate, really plays the position.
His mind is strong in terms of being able to work through progressions.
It has a lot of qualities that you like.
And so, you know, Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, they all have their things.
But I would say that fairly early in the process.
And so that kind of, like it was a human experiment for us as well because we knew.
fairly early that where we were going now having said that we we had a good idea that's the guy we
wanted we also hadn't seen him in person yet neither kyle or myself had so we were like look we you know
that's who we that's the leader in the clubhouse but we want to see this through and things can
change and maybe we could be influenced by some of our other people who had a different of uh conviction or
or you know so we just let it play out um but we did align and so it was funny to see people for lack of
better word, just make stuff up.
Because we knew who were, and like, I didn't say that to you.
So it was fun to sit back and watch that.
But it's also part of what builds the intrigue.
And people are so interested in this league right now that it's fun to sit back and watch
things be talked about.
And I guess ultimately that's a good thing.
You know, I had said this on the air.
I said, in my opinion, and just tell me how a general manager thinks.
I said, listen, they won the Jimmy Garoppolo trade.
They gave up a second rounder.
She's in the Super Bowl.
You won.
That's not the way it works in the NFL.
You've got to give up multiple first round picks.
So there's no reason to win that trade again.
Just keep playing Jimmy Garoppolo as long as he's upright and let, you know, Mac or
Trey Lans or whoever, just let him grow.
Don't rush.
There were a lot of these stories that were, get Garapolo out of the building.
I just didn't get it.
He got you to a Super Bowl.
This kid's been a big game.
This is the NFC West.
I don't care how good Trey Lance is.
You've got to face Pete Carroll in week one.
That's brutal.
So when you would hear the Garoppolo stuff, how much of that did you have to go to Jimmy and say,
hey, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, don't believe that blog.
Did you have to kind of manage that situation?
I think Jimmy's got a really good trust in myself and Kyle.
I think you earned that.
And I think from day one, we've been very upfront with Jimmy.
And, you know, when I went to Jimmy, I told them the truth that, like, look, we have made a decision that we're going to pursue a quarterback this offseason.
You know, Jimmy, when you've played, you've been tremendous, and the record speaks to that.
We feel like there's room for growth.
You know, when you're on the field, the biggest thing's been hard to keep you on the field in that position.
So that's not an easy thing to tell a player, but Jimmy took it tremendously.
And my other commitment was that – but here's the good news, Jimmy, we don't want you to go any.
We want you to be here and our ownership has made the commitment that we can do that.
We can fit in our cap.
And we think it's a good situation for you, probably not the one you ultimately want to hear.
I'm sure you want to be the long-term guy.
You know what?
And there's a flip side of that.
He still could be, you know, because he's going to have a chance to compete and earn that job.
And we're just going to let it play out.
But Jimmy's a really good football player.
I think I've learned long ago as a player that all you want is.
for people to look you in the eye and tell you the truth.
And a little communication can go a long way.
That's what we tried to do with Jimmy.
And Jimmy's been tremendous from the start to the point where after the draft,
he was the first player to text Trey.
He did that on his own.
And then he's been, you know, I'm watching these guys on the field right now.
And he's been tremendous to Trey.
So it's a good situation.
And, you know, we try to over-communicate things.
And I think that does pay dividends.
But let's be honest about it.
You draft a guy third.
you want him to play. What if Trey is terrific in camp? He's terrific in the preseason. And you got
you got this thing where you're looking around going, well, we think, we think Trey's about ready to go.
About six, seven games into the year. You know when the trading deadline is. Would there be an
opportunity at some point if Trey's ready to go? I mean, he is ready. I mean, I hear all these
stories in the whiteboard kid picks up everything real fast. He called his protections in college.
Will you potentially have to address it week five, six, seven, if Trey's just knocking your
socks off. Yeah, I don't know when that time is. I think we're going to put both guys out there,
open the competition. That will be Kyle's decision. He's the coach of this football team.
And, you know, let it kind of play out. But I think the reassuring thing is that we don't have to
rush tray. You know, I think sometimes you can get in a situation where like, hey, man, that's,
that's the only thing we have that we believe we can go, you know, have a great chance to win week out,
week in, week out. We know Jimmy can win. And so that provides a nice
luxury, a nice situation where we can really protect our
investment in Trey. And Trey is equipped very well. It's part of the thing that
drew us towards him, both in talent and really the spirit, his makeup. His makeup, I think,
is tremendous for that position. He's smart. He's a great
leader. He pulls the best out of people around him. So we
we believe that will come, but the nice luxury that we have is we don't have to rush it.
He can play when he's ready to give us the best chance, and that, you know, that will be on
Kyle.
And I think it will be fairly obvious when the time's right.
And, you know, I think at that time, he'll be our guy.
He looks the part.
You know, I always say that.
You know, nobody ever wants to say it, but there is the eye test, and there are times I look at guys,
and I think, oh, he doesn't, he looks a little small.
You know, I mean, I've seen that in my life.
And I'm like, yeah, that guy, Trey looks the part.
you watch him throw, you're like, yeah, he's got the hips, he's quick, his release, it snaps
off.
So, you know, what do I know?
But anyway, congratulations.
By the way, I didn't know you made the, I didn't know you made nine Pro Bowls.
Oh, wow.
Yeah, I know.
Sometimes I pinch myself, Colin.
Someone was asking me there earlier today, did I, you know, like with the hall, did I think
about that when I was a little kid?
No, I didn't think about that until, gosh, probably year five.
I think whenever it was that I made my first Pro Bowl, and I'd like to believe that it was me that started having those thoughts, but it was really Herm Edwards, kind of spoke that into existence with me.
After my first Pro Bowl, I came back, and I remember sitting down with him saying, okay, how do I take the next step?
I want to be great.
I want to take the next step.
And him saying, well, first of all, you've got to change your expectations.
And I said, well, what do you mean?
You've got to stop thinking about Pro Bowls.
I know your mind's right that you want to win Super Bowls, but you need to start thinking about it.
about Kent. And I said, what?
He said, yeah. But here's
the thing. I believe it. You have to believe it
if it's going to happen because you have that in
you. And from that day forward,
it was like, wow, this is
that if he believes it's possible,
he's right. I need to start believing
that. And I, you know, kind of re-evaluated
my standard, told myself to the higher
standard. And it took
a little while, but it happened.
Good for you. One of the good guys
in our biz. John Lynch, congratulations.
Good luck going forward.
I looked at your schedule.
You're in the NFC West.
They're all brutal.
So good luck.
And we'll talk soon.
Thanks for like, Colin.
You bet.
Yeah, I covered him in Tampa.
Boy, he'd knock people out.
You know, he went to college and he was a quarterback initially.
John Lynch was.
And I think they figured out real quick.
He can really hit people.
So let's move on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
So the dolphins are taking a non-traditional approach with their offense this season.
They're having two coaches share the offensive coordinator role. And running back Miles Gaskin
revealed the team is giving their scheme a complete overhaul. He said it's definitely different,
a whole new playbook. It's not the same as last year. So Eric Studsville and George Godsey,
George was the tight ends coach and Studsville was the running back and running game,
running back's coach and running game coordinator last year. So to replace Chan Gaylee,
the two of them are running the offense. It's not entirely clear who's going to be calling plays,
but Brian Flores said it's going to be a collaborative effort.
I remain skeptical.
Collaborative?
Well, look.
Maybe it works.
I'm open to new things.
All right.
I don't want to be an old guy.
I don't want to be old guy.
I'm a little skeptical because it seems like having an offensive coordinator works for most of the best teams.
Forever.
But things need to be challenged.
Norms have to be pushed.
I'm a progressive person, so we'll see how it goes.
They certainly needed a bit of a change last year
to average 200.6 passing yards per game
and his nine starts last season.
So that ranked him 32nd out of 35 qualified quarterbacks last season
and they finished 15th in total points
and 22nd in total yards per game last season.
We got Jalen Waddle, Will Fulter, a couple of nice pieces.
So he's got some added pieces.
He has some pieces now.
I know Dolphins fans didn't want to hear anything about his weapons last year.
Well, he has them now.
The offensive line will be better.
He has a new offensive game plan.
And it's his second year with the team.
And it is clearly his team now.
There is no Fitzmagic to come in and save the day.
I hope Tua is the next coming of Tom Bray.
Tom Brady. I hope he has an excellent career. I would love that. Yeah. I have not seen anything
from to a... That's, that's right. It's very early, though. Let's be very patient. It's very early. I am
not a patient person. Yeah. And I have endured decades of the Dolphins not having a franchise
quarterback, so I don't know why I'm owed anybody patience when it comes to the situation.
Reasonable. Dolphins fans do not agree with me, though. I am the outlier in Dolphins Nation.
Miami fans need to come to terms with reality a little bit.
Cynicism is warranted at this point.
Apparently not.
Apparently not because they come from me every time I say this.
But I am not, I don't root against anyone.
I know a lot of times people think we get this a lot.
Like you're rooting against Baker Mayfield or I'm rooting against someone.
I don't root for negative things to happen.
I do revel in chaos when it occurs.
I root for sanity.
In 2021, that's what I root for.
sanity. I root for chaos with stories, but I don't root again. There's no value for us for the lions
to be bad, for the Bengals to be bad, for the Browns to be terrible for decades, for to and not
to work. That doesn't help. Everyone's like, all the media roots against it. It's not good for the
media to have to cover teams that aren't competitive. We would love to have 30. Everyone should be
competitive. We would love to have 32 Brady's. It would make the league better. Amazing. That'd be
incredible. Speaking of Brady, he underwent knee surgery after the Bucks Super Bowl win earlier this year at
the time, Bruce Ariens tried to downplay the procedure and called it a cleanup. But Tom Brady
recently revealed more details that make it sound a little more significance. I had pretty serious
knee surgery this off season, which is the first surgery I've had in about 12 years. So I was
really interested to see how it was going to go because last year it just took a lot every week.
I was kind of tending to my knee. And I thought, I would love to see a season what it looks like
when I can really focus on some other strength stuff that I want to do, some other technique stuff,
I'm not just focused on protecting my knee all the time.
So it's been pretty intense this off season from that standpoint
because it's been six and a half weeks that I've been dealing with,
the rehab process.
I don't doubt that he'll come back healthy,
but this is kind of interesting that he was managing that all year.
Yeah, I mean, it's, if I, you know, my gut feeling is Tom's going to have a really good year
and one more after that.
And then I think it's, I think it's just going to be time.
I'm not going to speculate because I don't know, but it's, I think it's,
if you look at the way the team is built in.
Now, he doesn't have to carry it.
It's a defense that can carry you to about eight wins itself.
The defense is the reason they won the Super Bowl.
Right.
I mean, obviously, he was tremendous throughout the season and was tremendous in the game,
but they blew Kansas City up.
So it is.
He doesn't have to carry the team.
He doesn't have to do anything out of the ordinary for what his game requires normally.
And it's mostly mental at this point.
I got out of the speculating of when Tom Brady was going to retire many years ago.
It was a complete waste of time.
All right.
I thought you would like this story.
Finally, Dan Campbell,
new Lions head coach.
It's making a name for himself, this unconventional style and his interesting press
conferences.
And he was on part of my take and did it again.
He has another idea on how he can motivate his players at practice.
I don't think we're going to be able to do it, but I would love to literally just have a pet
line.
Yes.
Just a legit pet line on a chain, a big ass chain.
And he just, he really is my pet.
We just walk around the building.
We go out to practice.
We're at seven on seven.
We're behind the kicker when he's kicking.
I might end up losing an arm because of it.
But that would be even better, you know,
because it would validate what this is a freaking,
this is a creature now.
This is an animal.
This thing is, this is from a wild.
He's obviously joking.
But this wouldn't be the first, like,
look, the lions are not going to allow an actual lion to walk around the lion's facility.
And rightfully so.
I'm not so sure about that.
I think they would consider it.
You know what?
I shouldn't speak too soon because you're probably right, although I'm sure PETA would be all over them.
That could be a shot of the Lions practice facility for all I know.
I'm hardly get off my lawn guy, but like I'm so over.
I'm so over the whole like Detroit's just.
And like I've earned this because I was there in Miami with the first go-round with Dan Campbell.
So in my I love jokes.
I don't take myself very seriously.
But I do feel like you should earn your way into the jokey joke space.
Yeah.
Like get a couple dubs first.
A couple.
Just a few on your belt.
But this story did remind me of, I don't know how many people remember this, but I shouldn't
laugh because it's terrible, but it's just like so predictable.
So in 2003, Jack Del Rio put a stump of oak.
Do you remember this?
In the Jaguar's locker room as a symbol, right, like motivating to keep chopping wood.
and what could possibly go wrong with an axe
and a big chunk of wood in the locker room?
Well, Chris Hansen, the Pro Bowl punter,
needed surgery to repair a gash on his non-kicking foot
after wielding the axe inappropriately,
and he missed the rest of the season.
So keep the motivational gimmicks to speeches.
Some guys just have too much testosterone.
Dan Campbell's one of those guys.
It's like, you know what?
Scale back on the testosterone.
drink some soy milk
whatever you got to do
he's just got
I mean maybe just hang like a punching bag
in the in the office
you know
kind of wear it out a little bit
it's just like
it's just scale back a little
it's just a lot of
testosterone just can't
everything the hat the look
well you know
alpha males are very popular right now
nobody wants to be a beta
I happen to love
toxic masculinity
can you just be normal?
Can you just be normal?
I like thinkers.
Yeah.
Well, you're working with one.
Smart is sexy.
Yeah, I can be, certainly.
Bright thoughts.
I am so not into incompetent and dumb.
It's not hot.
Oh, dumb is not great.
Not attractive.
Not attractive.
My wife is so lucky.
Anywho, I enjoy with the news.
Well, that's the news.

Hey, I'm Jared Adano.
You might know me as that loud guy who yells out,
help on the internet.
Help!
Somebody!
Please!
But there's so much more to me than me.
I'm an actor.
I'm a comedian.
And recently, I've become quite the helper myself.
And on my new podcast, Hope from a Hypocrite,
I'll be changing lives,
helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions.
Sike!
I'm a comedian.
I'm not qualified to give good advice.
Join me and my comedian friends.
as we riff, rant, and recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man.
If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice.
One ring is too scary.
Oh, cream a chicken suit.
Hey, cream.
Cream a chicken suit.
This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know.

So NBA playoffs start today.
We have a play-in tournament.
It's unnecessarily confusing.
I'll try to simplify it.
We'll start with the West and then go to the East and we'll end up in the finals.
Here are my predictions for the NBA playoffs.
So Lakers Warriors play in game.
would take the Lakers.
I would take the Lakers because I think they're a better team, better defense, and better
bench.
So the Lakers will beat the Warriors in the playoff game.
And the Lakers have won five straight.
Grizzly Spurs playing game.
I would take the Grizzlies.
Spurs are a mess.
Derek White got hurt.
Don't trust them.
Warriors, Grizzlies, take the Warriors.
They've played three times.
Warriors, one more.
So let's start with the first round.
Here we go.
First round of the Western Conference playoffs.
Jazz Warriors.
I'm going to take the Jazz.
Jazz are the only team to rank in the top four offensive and defensive rankings.
I just think Utah is a better team.
Right now, the only thing I worry about is how they match up with guys named LeBron.
Clippers Mavericks, I would take the Clippers over the Mavericks,
and the reason I would be, people think the Mavericks are the great offensive team.
The Clippers actually led the NBA in three-point shooting.
So they're a much better team, and they can go toe to toe,
on threes. Lakers, sons, this is an easy one. Lakers have the better bench,
playoff experience, size advantage. I think that could get fairly ugly.
Nuggets and Blazers, you know, again, if Jamal Murray was healthy, I think this would be
a really fast series, but the Blazers did not play well against top four teams in the West
this year. They were two and ten. A little bit of fools gold with the Blazers right now.
So then we go to the Western Conference semifinals.
Jazz Clippers.
I would take the Clippers.
Donovan Mitchell missed a lot of games at the end of the season for the jazz.
So you don't know if he's at full strength, I would go Clippers.
Nuggets, Lakers.
Again, with Jamal Murray out, the Lakers have done a very good job against Yokic.
He struggles against their size.
And now with Andre Drummond and Anthony Davis, I would take the Lakers there.
Clippers, Lakers, I just try.
the Lakers in a big spot. It's pretty simple. Clippers have been a really bad team late in
games this year. That's like a bad bullpen in baseball. Hard to win a series. Sorry, Dodgers.
I'll go Lakers to win the West. All right. The play-in games in the East are barely watchable.
Let's just go to the playoffs in the first round of the Eastern Conference. So 76ers take on the
Wizards. So they've met three times this year.
the 76ers, listen, they have a size advantage.
I do think Ben Simmons, a great defensive player, can slow down a Bradley Beale or a Westbrook.
You take the Sixers there.
Knicks against Atlanta.
This is where I think the Knicks are going to give Trey Young some headaches.
They're a physical team.
They play hard.
And let's be honest about the Knicks.
Number one in total defense, points per game.
They are great at something.
I don't know if Atlanta is great at anything.
I would take the Knicks.
Nets Celtics. This is an easy one. I just don't think Boston has the juice.
I mean, they've got two guys that score a majority of their points.
Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum. I think it's a great matchup for the Brooklyn Nets.
There are matchups I don't like for them in the East. This could be a sweep for me,
nets over the Celtics. And Milwaukee and the Miami Heat, it is a great series.
It's weird because I like Milwaukee a lot in the postseason, but Miami matches up size-wise.
I think they've got the better coach.
The Bucks beat them two out of three.
So I'm just going to go with a higher seed home games here in a very tight series,
take Milwaukee.
Then you got 76ers take on the Knicks.
The 76ers, too much juice offensively.
They beat them three times this year.
I don't think it's a particularly great matchup.
You got Doc Rivers.
So now I got a veteran coach against Tom Thibodeau.
I think all things in right here, 76ers win it.
It's a fun series.
It's great to have Philly in New York, but I take the Sixers.
Nets Milwaukee.
This is the end of the road for Brooklyn.
Yonis has had a field day against Brooklyn.
I don't think they defend the interior well.
Also, Drew Holliday and PJ Tucker and Janice are guys that will grind on the defensive end.
I think these games get ugly.
I think Milwaukee is physical, goes right at them.
and you see James Harden struggle a little bit and KD struggle a little.
Now it's Milwaukee in Philadelphia.
I think it's a very good series.
Janus, by the way, against M.B., that is an all-timer.
I'm going to take Milwaukee.
I think it's a go-either-way series.
I think there's a little bit more.
I always worry a little bit about the chemistry component with Philadelphia.
Now, Tobias Harris, Joe L. Ambide in Janus, against Drew Holliday,
Chris Middleton and Yannis, that's about as good as you're going to get.
It's going to be a...
Milwaukee's got a rough road between Miami, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia.
So my finals, I'm kind of wavering on this because I just wonder if the bucks are going
to have too much taken out of them between three grueling series, physical series.
I don't know what they're going to have left in the tank, but it's a premonition.
I kind of feel it.
I kind of feel like Milwaukee.
The Lakers have a health issue.
A.D. or LeBron, somebody's not fully healthy.
And these are two veteran teams, by the way.
It's not like Milwaukee couldn't have a pulled hammy as well.
I'm going to go Milwaukee over the Lakers.
I do worry about the high ankle sprain.
LeBron said he's not 100%.
How many series can he go without getting re-injured?
That's my guess Milwaukee wins.
I say it with very little confidence.
Very little confidence.
I'll tell you what.
The Eastern Conference has some interesting.
I mean, Janus against Embed,
Janus against Miami and Bamah, Adubayu,
and Spolstra and Butler.
Those are, I mean, if Milwaukee wins it, they will have earned it.
It's going to be really fun NBA playoffs
because there is no complete team this year.
Not really.
The Lakers would be the closest to it,
but they have some injury issues.
