Sports Illustrated, Sacramento, B. he's covered this league a long time. He's now joining us live. You know, let's start with this, is that I feel bad for the sons because I think if Chris Paul was healthy, they'd be up to O in the series. Going forward, I mean, he didn't play, you know, and Devin Booker, as good as he is, didn't have a field goal in the last 14 minutes. He's a great talent, but, you know, he's not been a guy who can put the franchise on his

back like a Chris Paul. I mean, when that game was done last night and you're watching Chris Paul pained on the bench, is it over for Phoenix? Do they have a shot going forward? I don't think so. I hate saying that, Colin. I wrote a few weeks ago a long story about Chris and chronicled, you know, his kind of renaissance and the way that he got healthy again. And like a lot of other people, when I saw him go down in game one, you're just cringing for him.

You know, you've got to respect the work that he does and the way he approaches the craft. and to have this happen is awful. Yet again, it's another part of his pretty tortured playoff resume. And, you know, maybe he'll shock the world and feel good again in a couple of days. It doesn't look that way. And to your question, no, I don't think they're getting out of this first round without him. Devin's fantastic. The mix of Devin and Chris has been wonderful.

And it's just awful, awful timing. You know, it is interesting. I wonder, do you think the Lakers sometimes have frustration? So they're 11 and 0 when Anthony Davis plays his best games in the playoffs, 500 after that. And whereas Kobe and Magic and Jerry West and many of the Laker greats were self-motivated, Anthony Davis is one of those guys that you've got to kind of poke him in the ribs and call him soft. Do you think there's ever a little frustration that, you know, as great as he is, he can be maddeningly inconsistent and sometimes just non-aggressive?

I would imagine so. I mean, so Bill Platsky of the LA Times the other day I thought wrote a good column that highlighted what you're saying is the idea that you can't take AD's ring away from him and you shouldn't. He earned that thing. He was probably the best player in the bubble last year. But then he goes back to this Jekyll and Hyde thing that we have seen before. And LeBron in particular, I would love to be behind the scenes and get a sense of how he handles AD from a leadership standpoint. Because I don't think you can poke the bear a little bit and get him going. but his personality is not the kind where,

if you go too hard, I don't know if that's going to work. And you heard stories going into game two about how AD was in the gym nonstop. He wasn't smiling. He was taking it seriously. But that should be the approach every time. Go ahead and channel Kobe and the way that he used to do it. Now, there's a high bar.

You know what I mean? When you're a great, when you're a future Hall of Famer, then we are going to nitpick. But I think it is fair to say that every time AD slips up like this, they're not going to come out with the W. So I had real questions. I thought the Clippers matched up well with Dallas. Apparently, I'm wrong.

Clippers have now lost five straight playoff games. You know, they fired Doc. It was his fault. It was the bubble's fault. We need time together's fault. Montrez Harold's fault. And then you look up and you're like, they're worse now than they were a year ago. It does feel like this is a big front office, a highly compensated front office.

if they got swept in this series, would they just, I mean, your take on what would happen if they lose in four or five games to Dallas in the first round? Here's the thing, and this is as old as time. We know the formula here. You can't fire the players, right? They obviously are planning and hoping that Kauai Leonard resigns in free agency. So the players are not going to be the focus. You already change the coach.

You know, I do think that the front office is going to be under pretty significant pressure if this thing falls apart in the first round. And Steve Balmer is nothing if not proactive and nothing if not, you know, the type of guy that accepts nothing less than finally getting that championship. And I guarantee you he's losing his mind right now. And the leadership stuff that you talked about earlier, I could not agree with you anymore. I think that we overlooked the fact that in Toronto, that Kyle Lowry had so much to do with the ethos of that locker room and the way that team was wired.

And then Kauai obviously was the best player on that team. his other championship in San Antonio, Kauai is surrounded by Timi and Tony and Manu. And we've just kind of glossed over the idea that leadership-wise, he has some deficiencies. And I don't think Paul has filled those deficiencies either. And Ty, who I do believe in quite a bit, is clearly struggling to get these guys in a good place.

So I still think Utah beats Memphis if Donovan Mitchell plays. Sure. He was supposed to play. He was a late game scratch. You've got some reporters. on the tension, how we got here, and where it's at now with the team and Donovan Mitchell. Right. He was not happy, Colin.

And listen, he admitted that in his Zoom conference. ESPN had first reported that. And that part, I don't think, has changed. He's still not happy with the way this went down. And the short version of it is that, you know, he has a personal training staff that he has been working with, not independent of the team, in collaboration with the team. this is somewhat of a trend in the NBA these days. LeBron does it, Chris Paul. Part of his comeback was with a personal training staff. But where it got uncomfortable is that you had people from that group

telling him that he was ready to go for game one. And based on their protocols and the way they saw the situation and the ankle, they gave the green light. The jazz did not agree with their protocols and what they wanted to see. Yeah, we lost Sam Amick. It is an interesting story. because this is a real trend in professional sports. You know, you've got the team and the training staff, and in college, that's understood. But in the professional ranks, when players are making 40, 50 million, they're going to give training staffs a million and a half.

They can call them when they want. They get special training. They don't have to wait in line for stuff. So, like, I get it. Like, if I could afford, if we could all afford somebody to make our food, you know, whether it's a nanny, whether if you've got a bunch of kids, or it's a, you know, I always said if I hit Powerball lottery, I'd hire somebody to make food. I would just not have to make food.

So like for these pro athletes, it's like, well, their body is their business. And for a lot of them, it's like I want to spend a million and a half dollars. And let's go back to Sam Amick. So continue your story with Losh at the very end about the tension that's going on right now. Yeah, so his personal training staff had indicated to him he was ready to go. And I think this played a part too. sat on a Zoom call with reporters after shoot around heading into game one. And he said publicly that I was going to play that he's going to play that night.

So now he's out there a bit. You know what I mean? And I think to have on the back end, game one taken away from him in his mind, caused a lot of tension. And I think that if you, Colin, you go back to the playoffs last year, they lose to Denver in that first round. I was in the room after that game, seeing how bad that loss hurt that team. And if I'm Donovan, it's like he's been waiting all year to kind of fix that wrong.

and go down this road again. And the tension remains. The organization is going to be patient. They understand his position. They also looked at the schedule and said, you know, we want you at the back end of the playoffs. We plan on beating Memphis.

We plan on advancing. And that's where things get hard this time of year. It is a calculus where you, if you have plans on contending for a title, I don't blame them for thinking about the big picture. If you look at LeBron, for example, he's pushing through an ankle injury. And at times, that has been challenging.

They go down one-nothing. So I get where the jazz were coming from, but it was definitely tense and definitely uncomfortable. Finally, the New York Knicks, Sam. Joy was mentioning this earlier. We talked about it. When you're a big brand, you know, like Alabama football before Nick Saban was a mess, they get Nick Sabin two years later.

They run the sport. Right. Big brands recover quickly. And it doesn't matter, in my opinion, the Knicks have been nonsense for 20 years. This morning, if I was a free agent, and I'd be like, oh, look at the Knicks. And with your reporting, do you sense that despite James Dolan ownership, this current

momentum is like the beginning of something very fruitful with some tarmac, with some runway here? Yeah, I think it could be. Now, it's always fascinated me that I think most players, most stars that say what you will about James Dolan, for some reason they seem to look through that and just, you know, the idea for a lot of them is if you can present to me the garden stage and you can present to me New York City at a fan base that let's not kid ourselves. It is trumping that Nets fan base tenfold. And that remains the case now, even when the Nets have KD and Kyrie and James Hardin. And I think that it is going to be the start of something good for this group if they don't mess it up.

I think you need to give some love to Scott Perry, the GM, who before Leon Rose, signed Julius Randall, cleared their books when it comes to their contracts. They're in a good position. They have money this year. Leon Rose has come in and help that culture as well. Tom Tibido doing what he does after, you know, you and I both know, Tom's reputation of the optics around him weren't good a couple years ago. And you talk about him reminding folks that he can coach. It's a great story, but we will see if they can take it to the next stage. By the way, Sam, surprised at all how Milwaukee has kind of thrashed Miami. I mean, Miami, maybe it was lightning in a bottle last year. It's just possible that we kind of, you know, we thought it was going to be a great sequel, and they're really, outside of Jimmy Butler,

Bam's a good player, but he's not a great player. Is this just who they are, actually? It's funny, though, right? Because it could have turned. If they don't pull out that overtime session in game one, then maybe the mood is different in game two. But now all of a sudden, with the Bucks absolutely beating them up in game two, they're in a great spot.

I mean, you look at Drew Holiday and the difference that he has made. That's big time. PJ Tucker and the toughness, I think that that's. matters for the Bucks. But the Miami side, listen, they've been trying to have a patchwork approach all year with injuries. Jimmy, when he was out there, was fantastic, but, you know, missed a lot of games. And I'm never going to bet against Eric Spolstra from a coaching standpoint. And we'll see if they can make this thing a series. But to me, game two was as bad as it gets. You got Janus out there, you know, playing ball like he's on a soccer field late in the game because it had become fun for the

bucks. They were having their way with the team that last, you know, last season had them reconsidering everything. The coach, you know, trying to hold on to Yannis and make him sign that Supermax extension. So this is personal with Milwaukee when it comes to Miami. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, Julio Jones is on the trading. block and could be on the move very soon. He reportedly has two teams on his radar as potential destinations. The Patriots.

Yeah, it makes sense. And the Titans. Yeah, it makes sense too. They lost Corey Davis. Now, according to Fox Bet, he's favored to remain in Atlanta plus 100. New England Patriots plus 175. The Niners plus 250, Raiders plus 400, and the Titans plus 600.

It's kind of interesting that the Falcons are still favored, because this has been in the conversation for a while. I mean, they have very little cap space, and he would free them up. He has the highest cap hit of all wide receivers next season at $23 million. So New England has a still very good corner named Stefan Gilmore. A lot of teams could use a corner.

He's very expensive. So if you sign Julio Jones, who would clearly be your number one receiver in New England, you're not paying Cam or Mac Jones or Brian Hoy or anything. So the quarterback's salary, all told, is not very expensive. I could see there were rumors about six months ago moving off Stefan Gilmore, and Belichick tends to develop corners very, very well. It's really Bill's strength, linebackers, corners, and safeties. He's drafted a couple in the last several years.

Maybe they're ready to play. Gilmore came off probably his worst year. And he has a tendency to move off players a year early. So to me, New England, you bring in Julio is your one. and then all these Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Aguilar, they fall into place. Then you've got some real weapons for Cam Newton to work with. So I also think in that division with Buffalo, you're playing for a wild card. You're not better than Buffalo.

So your way in, you've got to be able to score points because Buffalo is going to score them on you. You're not going to beat Buffalo 17-14 much. So I think Julio Jones gives you a dynamic offensive component. New England doesn't have anything near. or that good. Cam and Julio would be fun to watch. If they trade him after June 1st, they would save over $15 million in cap space, and it would allow them to split the dead cap space charge over two seasons. So we're probably going to see this within the next few weeks. So Ben Rothesberger was criticized for his dip in performance at the end of the 2020 season. He's 39 years old,

adding into his 18th year in the league, and longtime teammate, Cameron Hayward, is defending his quarterback, he thinks Ben does not get enough respect. I've seen him day in and day out compete. And you know, you just get frustrated because, you know, I know Ben puts him work. And I know how much he cares about this team. So I hear the bad mouthing about him being, you know, not great quarterbacks. And then everybody's ready to elevate other other quarterbacks. I'm like, what have they done?

You know, this guy is a proven winner, but you're ready to discount him. Well, I understand Cameron Hayward being defensive of Ben Othusberger. That's his quarterback. Are we bad-mouthing, Ben? Are we acknowledging the reality of what he's become? Well, I don't think anyone is saying he's a non-great quarterback. There are other quarterbacks who are better than Ben Rathesberger right now. He'll go to a Hall of Fame.

He's definitely a Hall of Famer. And he is a proven winner. But as of late, they have underachieved. And I've been saying this for years because I've been saying since the Antonio Brown, Levy on Bell, Ben Rothersberger team fell apart that that was a disappointment. They should have won more with that roster. Like, they should have done more with that. He has a three and six record in the playoffs in the last 10 seasons.

They've made the playoffs six of the last 10 seasons. They've been good, not great. And that's just, that's the reality of the situation. And to me, that's not good enough for Pittsburgh Steelers standards. But he's, I mean, last year they went on that amazing run, and then he fell apart at the end of the season. Like, the end of the season is when you need to be. performing at your highest level. I think it's fair to be critical of Ben Rathosberger. I'm not saying

that he doesn't have another year in the tank, but they should be looking towards the future. And the fact that they are essentially ignoring that is what's worrisome to me. So, I think you'll enjoy this. Tom Brady and Phil Mickelson are teaming up again for another edition of the match on July 6th. That was really fun for everyone last year because we had no sports on. And I love the behind the scenes like the cameras and the carts it was like it was a very interesting and fun view of these guys well this time their competition is going to be aaron rogers and bryson de chambo and brady is having a little fun he's he's he's poking a little fun at erin rogers and bryson he took uh the image going around on twitter of brooks capca closing his eyes as brison de shamboy while he's really rolling

his eyes as bryson de shambo walks by him and uh made some memes and the first one he wrote on bryson happy to be here on Kepka. Aaron realizing as to spend the whole day with Bryson, they're better, sorry, Radio Lions. So Brady's taking a shot at Bryson. These are all on Brady's Twitter. So just go look it up. Yes, he is. And then he wrote,

this is my favorite one. The Packers kicking a field goal down seven on Bryson and Aaron Rogers on Kepka. And then he finally wrote on Bryson, me, Tom Brady making memes and on Kepka Aaron and Bryson. Again, radio, you just have to go look at them. But he also posted the

flyer, the internet flyer graphic, I guess I should say, for the match. And his caption was, two champions versus a scientist and a jeopardy host. Oh, burn! So Brady's out here talking a little trash.

Wow. I love this version of Tom Brady. I love this loose, useful internet, creative, trolley, Tom Brady. We never get to see, we never get to see this for the longest time. I guess that's what happens when you do that much winning. You're like, what are you going to say to me? Yeah, what are you going to say? What are you going to do? I like Brooks Kepka.

Of the three big hitters, Bryson DeShambo, Dustin Johnson, and Brooks Kepka. I'm a Brooks Kepka, Dustin Johnson guy. I like what they bring. DeSambo feels a little, I'm not a snob with golf. He feels a little over the top for me. It's not like I don't want the Phoenix open every week on the tour. I can take it like twice a year. And it's like Bryson DeShambo is, you know, he reminds, like John Daly, like I got it, but it just wasn't my, like Brooks Kepka's got a certain refined quality, Dustin Johnson. Well, you know, golf, it's very, very refined, very class.

A lot more refined. And I'm not being a snob, but Bryson, you know, the 42 protein shakes and 12 egg omelets, he runs up there, sprints up there and crushes it. His game doesn't have a lot of nuance. He's got his own style, that's for sure. But that Kepka Bryson moment is good. That's a meme history for sure. It was an automatic meme history moment.

He'd lose money. He'd lose the love of Packer Nation. Mark Murphy, a story yesterday. He's not budging. But we had Alex Smith on about an hour ago, hour and a half ago. And I just ask him, your thoughts on this current Green Bay, Aaron Rogers, debacle?

It's inexcusable. It's absolutely, I think. How they ever got to this point. I mean, Aaron's been there 16 years. he's given to that organization and been there. And for them, I think, to what happened last year during the draft, and I haven't talked to Aaron about this, so I don't want to put words in his mouth, but clearly to watch the interview and him talk about, it's about the people.

And it is, and Aaron's been there that long, and I don't think it was the fact that they drafted Jordan Love in the first round. I mean, I think of the fact that you just, how do you have a guy like Aaron, and you don't go make sure beforehand you aren't going out of your way to make sure that he knows that he's loved, that they want him there, that we may be taking a quarterback in the first round. We want to make sure you're okay with it.

This is maybe what we're doing. We're thinking, I mean, how you haven't treated him the right way leading up to that? And the fact that, from my understanding, it's kind of like it was a bit of an unknown, a bit blindsided. How you haven't addressed that beforehand when you make a move like that and really made sure that everything is tightened up and everybody's feeling good about that? Because if it's not, you're not doing it, in my opinion. You're just not.

It's just not the way you run a business. It's not the way you're treating people. But it's a very unique business. The Packers don't have an owner. Who do you go to? There's no owner to call. You know, the reason Dak got his deal done is Jerry Jones. Jerry liked him.

Dak supported him during that anthem situation. Dak was there for him. There's no, you know, it's just people on the board. You know, and so I think, you know, I've said, you don't have to, I don't think Aaron's ever felt like Green Bay to me. Farv, with his hunting hat on, felt more Wisconsin. Dairy farmers, good people, Midwestern ethos. Farv had a Green Bay field to him.

Aaron's never felt like Green Bay. But that's okay. Eli Manning doesn't really feel like New York, right? The Manning family from the South. But in the end, Tom Brady, California guy, supermodel, doesn't exactly feel like New England. So I don't think you have to always be a perfect fit. But I think we've moved into resentment territory.

And that just, that equals divorce. So I don't, it is a, it is a weird space to be in. My only question is, does Aaron have the stomach to be a holdout? Because Mark Murphy, who runs the franchise, has said, I am not firing the GM. Period. Well, even long term, however, this plays out, because we're imagining at this point he's going to leave after at least this year. So even if he does come back and play this year.

Yeah, he's got, this is, Aaron's basically telling you, you're going to get rid of me in a year. Right. I'm just going to get rid of you a year before you're going to get rid of me. That's what he's doing. But he doesn't have to leave a lot of money on the table to do that. Okay, but I can host Jeopardy and make most of it back. I'm not saying he's not going to do it.

He's not married with kids. Right. I'm not saying he's not going to do it. I'm just saying this is coming to an end either way, sooner than we probably thought. and whether Jordan Love is ready or not. Because who knows if in a year Jordan Love is going to be any better than he is now? We don't know.

So the Packers are really betting on themselves in this spot. Like that's what you did when you took Jordan Love and you didn't communicate with Aaron Rogers. So Green Bay drafted Jordan Love and apparently didn't think, A, it would rankle Aaron Rogers and also thought, we'll be able to move off Aaron whenever we feel like it. Aaron saying, no, we're going to get off it a year before you want,

because I know you're running me out of the building next year anyway. I'm going to at least, you humiliated me, I'm going to at least have a say in when this divorce happens. I mean, it's a good recipe to be good and not great. That's how they planned it out to be. You have the MVP. Go look at, go look at, it's amazing. Go look at green, whereas the Rams are trying to get better.

Tampa's trying to get better. Now, Kansas City is getting better. Buffalo's getting better, Stefan Dix. Go look at Green Bay's last two drafts. Seven of their picks are developmental players. They're not like needs. They took Georgia's second best corner this year in the first round. Last year they took a quarterback not ready to play

and a running back who wasn't nearly as good as the two they had. And this year they drafted, I think, three offensive linemen, and all developmental players. So Aaron's just saying, time out. Can you get me guys that'll win now? But Green Bay, because they were irrelevant in the 80s, they are paralyzed. It's that small town.

You know, they do surveys that the small towns hate the coastal elites. And it's like the coastal elites don't really know the small towns. They've never lived in them. But there's this kind of boogeyman complex. Green Bay's got this. We're not going to be irrelevant. We're going to force people to pay attention to us. And it's like they're just paralyzed.

But how is that? Who's going to pay attention to you if Aaron Rogers isn't there unless Jordan Love is the next Aaron Rogers and Brett Farr? I think I think the way Green Bay operates trumps everything. They don't want to be the 80 Packers. And they also went through this with Fav and they look at it and think, well, it was tough for a year, but we got over it. Yeah, you got over it because you had Aaron Rogers. Yeah. Well, I mean, Aaron was drafted late first round.

Jordan Love was drafted late first round, so they hit on one. I don't like counting on outliers. My retirement plan is not playing the lottery. Yeah. I mean, Alex said it. Like you were on the doorstep of the Super Bowl, you would think you would try and get that extra piece that you were away to get to and possibly win the Super Bowl.

Everyone always talks about Aaron Rogers' numbers. He's the worst numbers of his career. They were 13 and 3 in the NFC championship game. So how many quarterbacks were taken? the first round last year, like four or five. Herbert was obviously. And so I was talking to a team that drafted a quarterback in the last couple of years. Because we've had 10 quarterbacks taken in the first round last couple years, right?

And I was talking to a team about Jordan Love about a month ago. And I said, do you have your like report on Jordan Love? Because I've never seen him play. and this person said, this high-ranking executive said, we didn't like him. We thought he was immature. We thought we just didn't, we just didn't, we would not have picked him. If he was available, we would have passed on him. And this is a team that in the last two years needed a quarterback.

And they were, they saw red flags and they just didn't think he was close to ready. Are they happy with the quarterback position now? I'm not going to get into specifics. Because that would limit it down to about three teams. But it's... I mean, Green Bay is just not trying to win right now. They're cool with being good, not great. That is evident in their decisions throughout their history.

You had Brett Farv and Aaron Rogers, and all that time, you have two Super Bowls to show for it. Listen, Aaron Rogers has enough money in the bank. He can host Jeopardy, live in his Malibu... I'm sure he paid cash for his $28 million dollar Malibu Mansion. He doesn't have kids or a wife yet. He can live pretty frugally. I'd rather see Aaron Rogers play for.
