The Herd with Colin Cowherd - 05/31/2021 - Best of The Herd
Episode Date: May 31, 2021Colin doesn’t believe LeBron has the shoulders needed to carry the Lakers without Anthony Davis into the Finals, and their roster is looking more like LeBron’s 2018 Cavaliers. With the Lakers’ i...njury woes, Colin sees the Clippers as the best team coming out of the West. If fans continue to act out during NBA games towards players, it’s time to add assault charges to let fans know that this type of behavior is no longer being tolerated. Green Bay has shown Aaron Rodgers time and time again that they don’t want to fix the relationship. Plus, another fan favorite edition of Where Colin Was Right / Wrong! This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel

A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what I'm saying.
Yep, that's me, Clivert Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career
in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not
only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
So let's get to it.
Listen to the Clifford show on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I put on 10.
I was having trouble
stopping the muscle growth.

On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year,
unpack what went down, and try to make sense
of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild.
I mean, it was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Welcome in on a Monday Memorial Day live.
in Los Angeles. We're honored to be here. Thank you for choosing us. This is The Herd. Wherever
you may be and however you may be listening, we are on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and right
here on FS-1. Of course, it is Memorial Day honoring the men and women who have given their
lives for the freedoms we enjoy throughout this great country. Joy Taylor did a much better job
than me. You've got red on Joy. I just not, I got back at midnight last night. This is kind of a bluish
color. I have my flag also.
Oh, you do. Let me see it. Look at that.
Joy to the world.
Yes, happy more old day. Everyone be safe
today. Please be safe today. Be with family and be safe.
It's a travel. I was in the airport last night.
It is really busy out there. Please be safe.
A lot of people out. Joy, it's a crazy weekend.
Wild.
Everything changed. And that's what's great about sports. You just don't know what's going to
happen. So let's start with this.
You ever hear sayings in life that people say all the time, but you're
not sure they're true or make any sense.
Like they always say money can't buy happiness.
Well, it can buy a vacation in Hawaii, and that would make me happy.
So it does buy some happiness.
And LeBron James yesterday, when asked after the game about Anthony Davis's injury,
and he said, can you carry the team?
And he said, these shoulders were built for a reason.
And I thought, well, that doesn't make any sense because those shoulders have already been swept twice in finals when they were younger shoulders.
LeBron needs help.
That's what I know.
And I looked over the box score this morning from the game last night.
You have the Phoenix Suns have five different guys in a double figures, actually six different guys in double figures.
Lots of players played well.
And then I look at the Lakers box score.
And it's a lot of six points and minus eight and minus 15 and four turnovers.
And I think to myself, if you take out Anthony Davis from this current Lakers roster,
Who can you count on?
Kyle Kuzma, LeBron's body language tells you.
Kuzma drives him nuts.
Montrez-Harrel, he's in the doghouse.
Andre Drummond's a big body, but mostly gets in the way of LeBron trying to drive and score at the basket.
KCP, I like him.
Good in the bubble last year, but wildly inconsistent.
Dennis Schrooter, never quite sure what I'm going to get, but I do like his game.
This is becoming the 2018 cam.
when Kyrie Irving left and went to Boston,
and you had talented but kooky J.R. Smith,
often hurt Kevin Love, limited Tristan Thompson,
one-dimensional Kyle Corver, old George Hill.
I know Laker fans, you don't want to hear it,
but it's becoming the 2018 Cavs.
And LeBron had to play perfect for that team to win playoff series.
And the perfect days for LeBron,
and he had years.
where he played almost perfect.
Those days are over.
The relentless jet fuel to LeBron James,
he's humid.
It's his 18th year.
And so what's interesting about LeBron,
for the last 12 years,
he has been searching for what Michael Jordan got.
It's the ultimate gift and some of its luck.
LeBron's been searching for a Scotty Pippen,
committed as Michael was,
mentally tough as Michael was,
physical, always health,
in his prime, always there, playing hurt, playing sick.
And LeBron just can't find it.
He just keeps bouncing around the country.
Cleveland, first seven years, couldn't get him one.
Then Miami had de-weighed, but he was past his prime
and struggled playing at the end of that run in back-to-backs.
And then he went back to Cleveland, and Kevin Love was hurt a lot,
and Kyrie was a flake, and now he's in Los Angeles,
and Anthony Davis, bless his 28-year-old brittle body, cannot
stay healthy. He's looking for the Pippin. He's looking for it. You know, Michael was lucky.
Scotty was in his prime. Scotty was ascending. Scotty was aspirational. Scottie was mostly healthy.
Scotty took care of his body. Scotty worked as hard as Michael in the weight room.
And LeBron's just been looking for Scotty Pippen for 10 years and he can't find him.
Everywhere he goes. And it's nothing against Anthony Davis. But as hard as you work in life,
sometimes luck plays a factor. And as committed as LeBron James,
has been, as focused and often obsessed as LeBron James has been, his career now is about two things
which he can't control. Luck and fate. The Lakers cannot win any big series against any top
team, East or West, without Anthony Davis. Without Anthony, they can't. And Anthony Davis is a 6-11-and-a-half
guy that had a growth spurt between his junior and senior year of high school.
So he slashes and he runs the floor like a big.
And what happens to guys who run the floor and slash, they get knocked down.
And when you're seven feet, that is a long way to go to hit that hard NBA floor.
And Anthony gets hurt a lot and he's got a very unique body.
I mean, how many people in America are seven feet tall?
It's a unique.
That's why point guards don't get hurt nearly as much as centers in the history of the NBA.
So LeBron has been totally committed and totally focused, and he's at a point.
He will win no more titles in his career without luck and without faith.
Fate.
That's it.
That's what his career is.
And it just goes to show.
Nobody can do it in an island.
LeBron's not winning.
Michael Jordan won a single playoff game.
Forget series.
Michael Jordan won a single playoff game before he got Scotty Pippen.
Okay. So I don't want to hear LeBron can do it. These shoulders are built for their shoulders.
And those shoulders have already been swept twice in finals. You need help. LeBron's on his 18th year.
Now it's crossing your fingers time. That's his career. And so I want to segue to the Clippers.
So when we left Friday, Joy and I did the show Friday. And when we left Friday, here's what we were thinking.
Lakers just going to drive right into the finals. Clippers.
embarrassing. Oh, the weekend changed everything. First of all, Chris Paul appears now mostly healthy,
and the sons appear to be the better team of the two when Chris Paul's healthy. A.D. is now hurt,
and Kauai Leonard appears to be next to Kevin Durant, the world's best basketball player.
He is on fire. This is the Kauai you thought you were getting if you were Steve Balmer.
What a difference a weekend makes. The Western Conference,
is wacky this year.
First of all, it's eight question marks.
The home teams in 15 games are 5 and 10.
Many of the stars in the West are hurt.
LeBron's not 100%.
AD's hurt. Chris Paul's been hurt.
Donovan Mitchell's been hurt.
Luca's now got a nerve thing, a neck thing.
He's hurt. So it's all sorts of question marks.
And we all know this, especially in the West because it's been so good.
and it's okay to admit this.
Nobody ever wants to admit they got a break in life.
We all want it to, you know, fall on us.
Hey, it was my hard work.
I'm successful because I worked hard.
I am in no way discounting how hard you work.
I work, Joy, works.
Everybody in America works.
I'm not discounting that.
But you need breaks.
Even the world's best athletes need breaks.
And I'll give you an example.
Last year, the Lakers got a huge, bizarre break.
It's called a pandemic.
Colin, how's that a break?
because Anthony Davis is brittle, can't get through a season.
LeBron was old.
They got a four and a half month hiatus in the middle of a season.
That's the healthiest AD has ever been and the most energized.
Joey and I would say every night, it's like LeBron looks like he's like 21 again.
Big break.
Year before, Raptors got a significant break.
Clay Thompson and KD got hurt in the finals.
Remember that the Warriors could not stay healthy.
year before that, Warriors actually got a break.
Chris Paul, with the Houston Rockets, they led the series.
Houston was controlling the Warriors.
Chris Paul gets hurt, Warriors getting to the finals.
2016.
Cleveland got a break.
Remember, Draymond Green got suspended?
2015, Golden State got breaks.
Kevin Love and Kyrie for LeBron.
Both get hurt in the finals.
So even the great teams, you need breaks.
and the Clippers got a little break this weekend.
AD got hurt and Luca got hurt.
And now the question is,
can the Clippers do what historically they've never done?
Take advantage of the breaks.
Okay, that's where the individual comes in.
You get breaks in life, can you take advantage of it?
But what I saw this weekend from Kauai Leonard,
he has the best playoff stat so far in the history of the game for non-censors.
He's 62% from the floor, 33 points a game.
And what's interesting with anybody's history or the Clippers history.
The Clippers are largely the Chicago Cubs.
Losing, losing, decades of losing, lovable losers, and everything just sticks to you.
When you're losing as a franchise, everything sticks.
The stories never go away.
You know, all the weird things.
stuff, they talk about it for 100 years. But the minute the Cubs won, Steve Bartman, who?
Lovable losers, what? Rigleyville's cool. It all disappears. That's what titles do.
Just wind decks. They wipe all the bad stuff off. And that's the Clippers. The Clippers,
it's been, oh, they can't win the big game. And Steve Ballmer, oh, Paul George is this. And
the Clippers history is just a bunch of underachieving, big promises, big hat.
no cattle.
But if they win, get out the Windex bottle.
It all goes away.
That's what happened to the Cubs.
For years and years, you talked about superstition, and it was Bartman.
And all those stories are done.
None of them matter.
When the losers finally win, it's all erased.
Nobody cares.
Let's throw a party.
And after this weekend, what I saw with Kauai and the Clippers,
and I didn't think it was possible Friday,
oh, that's probably the best team in the West.

and listen now crazy NBA week we've got a trend in America and uh you're seeing really bad
behavior in a lot of places and uh i'll get to the Kevin Durant talking
about it this weekend. And to his credit, he acknowledged, we've all been sort of pent up.
Like the rest of you, I'm sitting on an airline last night where the airline let it sit
on the tarmac for hours and it was 100 degrees on the plane and we're all sweating and we have
to wear masks and the air conditioning's not working. Listen, we're all making adjustments.
We're all sacrificing. But in a week in the NBA, Atlanta's Trey Young has been spit on.
Russell Westbrook had popcorn poured on him,
and Kyrie Irving had a water bottle thrown at him.
Now, the NBA is very unique in basketball as a whole.
The proximity fans to players, it's insane how close it is.
I've gone to NBA games.
You have, I'm sure, in your life, you can talk to players.
I mean, the only thing I can compare it to in the history of sports
is I once went to Wimbledon, and unless it's center of court,
you can sit at the courts and literally talk to the players.
They'll come over and grab a ball, and you're, you know, a foot from an athlete.
NBA, you can talk to players. They're right on top of you. And that is a visceral connection,
which apparently after three beers, is hard for a lot of people to handle. So there's a saying,
you've heard this saying before, this is why we can't have nice things, bad behavior. And for
years and years, this is a trend I've noticed, that it's not enough money that the TV networks pay,
these billionaires who own the NBA, millions of dollars a year, more see.
seats on top of players in the tunnel.
The media, not that anybody cares, now sits in the second deck.
So you can put three more seats down for the billionaire owner to make more money with his NBA team.
And maybe the answer is, back the fans off the players.
Three games Wednesday and three incidents.
Now, at least this clown, a 21-year-old Cole Buckley is his name.
And yes, I'm going to call out people who do this.
It's embarrassing and they should be shamed.
At least he was arrested.
This whole, we're going to ban you from the arena.
I can't speak for a lot of you, but a lot of people just go to one game, two games in their life because it's very expensive.
So banning people from an arena, let's be honest.
The people who are doing this are usually not adults, long time season ticket holders.
Their young kids probably got free tickets or tickets from a friend.
They go and act like this.
and who your band doesn't stop anything.
They often call local radio shows and brag about their behavior.
Make it assault.
That's what they've done in Boston.
Make it assault.
You know, if you want to stop bad behavior, I'll give you an example.
Just make the result more punitive.
College football and college basketball has had cheating forever.
And it's always been simple to me.
Why is there cheating?
because if I wanted to pay a college athlete,
what's the punishment?
Make it a felony, 10-year prison sentence.
And Billy Bob down south,
going to put that Hyundai back in his wallet rather quickly.
There is so much cheating
and $100 bills given all over college sports.
Make it a felony.
That businessman, I mean, he likes that 18-year-old wide receiver.
Doesn't like him that much.
If you start treating these as a student,
consult people throwing stuff at athletes.
Watch the results.
And again, I know the proximity in basketball is intense.
You're right on top.
But maybe it's time for the owners.
They don't need any more commas in their revenue and net worth.
Push it back.
Get off the court.
Fewer seats jammed around the tunnel.
Give players space.
I thought Kevin Durant eloquently summed it up.
At some point, I know that being in the house for a year and a half with the pandemic,
got a lot of people on edge, got a lot of people stressed out.
But when you come to these games, you've got to realize, man, these men are human.
You know, we're not animals.
We're not in a circus.
You coming to the game is not all about you as a fan.
So have some respect for the game.
Have some respect for these human beings.
And have some respect for yourself.
your mother wouldn't be proud of you throwing water bottles at basketball players
or spitting on players or tossing popcorn.
So grow to shit and enjoy the game.
It's bigger than you.
Believe it or not, when I go to games, I go for the athletes, not the fans.
When I go to watch a comedian once or twice a year, I don't go for the heckler.
I go for the jokes.
It's an important thing to remember.

So there's a report that the Seahawks are emerging as a favorite to land
wide receiver, veteran wide receiver,
Julio Jones.
Now, I'm not sure how they're going to do it.
Seattle gave up a couple of first to get Jamal Adams.
Atlanta wants a first.
Maybe they'll take a couple of second round picks.
Seattle has never been shy.
In fact, nobody in the NFC West because the division,
is so great has been shy about giving up top picks to get top players.
But when I saw this headline, I will be honest, and I'm from the Pacific Northwest.
My first thought was Aaron Rogers.
Aaron Rogers is sitting there.
Think about the other top quarterbacks in the league.
Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs rebuilt his offensive line.
Lamar Jackson got more receivers.
Matt Ryan got Kyle Pitts.
Russell Wilson got a new tight end, a new coordinator.
a new guard, and they drafted a wide receiver.
Aaron Rogers, crickets.
So I thought to myself, yeah, I try to put myself in the position of athletes when you get into these situations.
What would I think?
Yeah, I think I would be ticked off after a while.
I think I would be annoyed by this.
But the Seahawks, to their credit, when Russell was upset, the Seahawks went to marriage counseling.
They talked.
They met with a counselor.
express their grievances.
They decided to come
together, listen to each
other, and Seattle has
upgraded his whole line. They're more
athletic now at tight end with Gerald Everett.
They got a new coordinator.
They're going to be more aggressive.
They re-sign Chris Carson and
the fullback. So Seattle
went to marriage counseling, and they
expressed their displeasure, and they
listen to one another. Green
Bay and Aaron can't even get a meeting
schedule. They can't agree in
a therapist. And so
if you're Aaron Rogers, just
think of what he is
watching this offseason.
So Joe Burrow has been in the
NFL for an hour.
He wanted the Bengals to
draft a wide receiver. Jamar
Chase, who we played collegiate football with.
They did.
Last year,
the Cowboys didn't need
a wide receiver, but they drafted
C.D. Lamb to get
DAC more help.
I mean, I don't even know if that Miami GM likes Tua, but they went and drafted Jalen Waddle,
and they certainly could have gone in other directions.
So Aaron can drive me nuts, but when I saw this Julio Jones are merging as a potential
see-alk, my first thought was, I mean, look at how Kansas City treats Patrick Mahomes.
Look at how Buffalo treats Josh Allen.
Baltimore treats Lamar Jackson.
Tampa Bay retained everybody.
These organizations listen to their star quarterbacks,
support them, keep furnishing them with wide receivers.
Buffalo is really beautifully.
Every year they just add a slot receiver.
Stefan Diggs.
You can't solve all the issues in one off season.
But if Russell Wilson does get Julio Jones,
and I'm not sure how they can make it work,
I'm really not because I just don't think they have the picks that Atlanta would want.
And I do think Julio Jones, Tennessee needs him badly.
I think New England definitely needs number one.
But, you know, and I can be critical of Aaron.
But when you see a headline like that, you can see Aaron saying, listen, I'm already sacrificing.
I'm with a franchise without an owner.
We don't get free agents.
You know, we're more of a developmental franchise in drafts.
we are go get stars. So, you know, Aaron has his moments, but you do have to sacrifice certain
things when you play with the Packers. That's understood. Now, let's not make it sound like the Packers
don't support Aaron. They develop offensive lines as well as any football team in the NFL. They
have for years. New England and the Packers, they don't draft first round picks on the O line.
They get third, fourth, fifth, six round guys. They become pro bowlers. And they are an organization
that is generally, fundamentally well-run.
It's a well-run organization.
But you start looking around the league
and you look at what everybody got all the star quarterbacks got.
And I see Aaron sitting around going,
guys, can you get me JJ Watt?
Aaron's not asking.
He's asking for an occasional phone call
if you're going to draft his replacement.
He's not asking for the world here.
And I can't blame him for looking at times.
Tommy Brady down in Tampa going, good night.
Can you just not draft my replacement?
That's all I'm asking.
One more herd.

Well, I do it every Monday.
We used to just do this for years and years during the football season,
but we started doing it every Monday.
People like it.
I admit when I whiff, Colin right, Colin wrong, brought to you by Jersey Mike
Subs.
going to dedicate the next 15 seconds to their new grilled portabella mushroom and Swiss sub.
Give it a try, fresh ingredients, make a sub above.
Jersey mics be a sub above.
So Colin right, Colin wrong, and here we go.
Where Colin was right?
Well, I thought it would at least take until the season,
but Tim Tebow is already being discussed as an occasional quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
They're calling it the Taysom Hill package.
Can we stop with that?
Tassum Hill is one of the top 15 athletes in the entire league.
Tim's now mid-30s probably runs a 4-8-5-40.
Taysam Hill's a 4-4 guy.
He's not Taysam Hill.
He doesn't throw a ball as well as Taysam.
He's not the athlete.
He's not as young.
He's not in his physical prime.
But this is what I've said about the T-Boe phenomenon.
Urban Meyer is going to muscle him in.
Has a chance to make this team.
and the minute Trevor Lawrence struggles,
they're going to put 33,
34-year-old slow Tim Tebow,
whose athleticism has always been overvalued
in a quarterback,
and it's just going to become a PR mess.
I just thought it would take until October to deal with this.
Where Colin was wrong.
I'm a big fan of Jimmy Butler,
but boy, was he atrocious against Milwaukee.
He shot 29%.
His 14 a game.
He was outscored.
by Greg Forbes of Milwaukee.
Now, Butler is a player that he wears his emotions right out on his shoulders for everybody
to see.
And you can see his body language.
He is not happy with some of these young Miami players like Tyler Hero, who last year
was that.
A hero for Miami in the bubble has been really poor.
So I just didn't think I'd ever see this Jimmy Butler again, but he was.
bad. Where Colin was right?
We told you the biggest advantage the Knicks had, all regular season they play hard.
And in the NBA, not everybody plays that hard. But we told you they're going to have a real
low ceiling in the playoffs because everybody plays hard. And boy, you have seen it against
Atlanta. Now, I did not think Julius Randall would shoot this poorly. But this, we warned
you, this is Tom Tibodeau's history. He gets players to buy in and play incredibly hard on a
nightly basis. He'll ask you to play more minutes, practice harder and play harder. And that will
no question pay off in the regular season. But his teams tend to get burned out. They tend to be a little
overvalued in the postseason because everybody plays hard. And we also said the Knicks are a
little bit of a flea market. They have everybody's secondhand stuff. If you're counting on Derek
Rose to be your go-to guy at this point in his career, you're probably not good enough to win a
playoff series. Where Colin was right. Tom Curran's a great reporter for the Patriots. I've been reading
him for years. His first impression of first round quarterback Mack Jones wearing number 50, the quarterback
for New England, small, not physically filled out, and not that lively of an arm. I never got
the Mac Jones' is special argument. He's a typical Alabama quarterback. He sits in a pocket well
protected, rarely gets hit, throws to wide open receivers, and Alabama almost always plays with
a lead. I don't see the special. I believe in 2021, you got to give me a gift with Cam it's his
size, with Mahomet's his arm, with Russell Wilson is elusiveness. I don't see the Mac Jones thing.
I think he is just sort of a Kirk Cousins, and that to me doesn't feel like a.
first round quarterback.
Where Colin was wrong.
I had the Clippers
done and gone Friday.
I just didn't sense
this roster wanted
to defend at an elite level.
And wow, they went to Dallas.
Kauai Leonard
played as good
a playoff basketball as he's
probably played since that
series for Toronto against the
Sixers a couple years ago and he got that
shot to drop in. And I got to give them credit. They were down 2-0 in the series, the Clippers.
They were down, was it 15 to 2, 30 to 11? Rick Carlisle pulled Luca out of the game briefly.
And from that point forward, the Clippers, who have a regrettable history, have been the
better team overwhelmingly since then. And I was wrong. Where Colin was right?
I've said on Anthony Davis, I've heard this for years. He's semi-committed to
working on his body and his body is semi-committed to him. He's hurt again. And I said last week,
he's not the Lakers MVP. He's the M-I-P. He is their most impactful player. And here's an example.
When he was aggressive in game two, in Phoenix, they control the game. Best third quarter by any
playoff team I've seen this year. When he doesn't play, they not only lose, they struggle to
compete with the Phoenix Suns.
So LeBron's hands are now, his history, his future is kind of tied to Anthony Davis's health.
He has never been a grinder in the wait room, so he gets hurt a lot.
What you give to your body, your body will give back to you.
And that's why the Kobe's and the LeBron's and the D. Wade's, they didn't get hurt for years.
It was at the end of their career.
AD's only 28, and he looks like he's falling apart.
Where Colin was right.
Chris Paul would have been my MVP.
he's remarkable.
Yesterday, he looks healthy again.
I think I root for Chris Paul
because there's something I love about Chris Paul's game.
He doesn't dunk.
He doesn't shoot a lot of threes.
He does all the little things that I think too often in basketball
are overlooked.
His toughness mentally, his toughness physically,
his willingness to call out teammates
who are often more gifted than him.
But as he has,
has been at least 80% healthy.
Phoenix is a better team.
And he is clearly the minute he got hurt,
Devin Booker went 14 minutes at the end of one of these games without a field goal.
And Devin Booker's gifted.
So I think you're seeing the value of what I've been preaching on Chris Paul for years.
Where Colin was wrong.
Aaron Rogers and the Packers front office doubled down on their animosity.
I just didn't think Aaron had the stomach for this.
He tends to, he likes to be liked.
And he's just doubling down.
He's not showing up to OTAs.
Top five receivers aren't showing up.
It appears orchestrated.
He took another shot.
There's more leaks.
I'm not coming.
That's not his history.
He likes to be liked.
And Green Bay, Mark Murphy, the president,
he's doubled down.
He leaked the story last week.
I'm not firing the GM.
And we're not trading Aaron Rogers.
So these are, this is a person.
Aaron Rogers in an organization that generally like to curry favor with their public image,
and neither cares.
And they're both doubling down.
I'm here for it.
But I've got to be honest, I thought they'd wrap this puppy up pretty quick.
I thought at one point Aaron would go, I don't like getting whack.
Remember about three weeks ago when a bunch of Aaron's friends kept saying it's fixable?
This is fixable.
And my takeaway was, that's Aaron sending a message.
Let's get this thing solved.
I don't want all this bad PR and Packer fans hating me.
but he's doubled down on it.
Where Colin was right?
Well, soccer snobs hate it when people like you and me can spot talent early.
Christian Pulisic, the best American soccer player I've ever seen,
became the first American man to play in the Champions League final.
Between his foot skill, his speed, his anticipation, his vision.
He is the greatest American soccer player.
and when you can get to the final of the Champions League,
this is the world's best soccer.
And I know soccer fans, they do not like it.
When us commoners can say,
after watching him play for a half,
that's the best American soccer talent I've ever seen.
He is.
Now, if we could just get two more Christian Pulisics,
we can win the World Cup.
We just need two more Christian Pulisics.
He is an absolutely once in a generation,
talent. I mean, he may be a once in a lifetime American soccer talent. Good for him.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. He is a Chicago native, which by the way I was there two weeks ago.
We have, I have an affinity for Chicago. Joy love Chicago too. My wife spent time there.
So any Chicago guy that wants on the show, we just, you bet. By the way,
Loyola. What class?
2017.
Look how young he is.
You just, how in Lord's name,
four years ago, you're studying physics,
and now you're breaking all the NBA stories.
I don't know how much physics I was studying, man.
God, you're a great story, man.
So we got a bunch of stuff here.
There's a story out on Anthony Davis of the Lakershams.
What's the very latest?
Yes, the sources tell me Anthony Davis is unlikely to play in game five
against the sons. That game is tomorrow night.
So that's a quick turnaround.
only one day off.
He doesn't have the benefit that Chris Paul had.
Chris Paul had an additional day off in between games three and four,
which is vital, obviously, as we will discuss.
But, you know, Anthony Davis is unlikely to play.
And with groin strains, just like hamstrings cast,
that's a tricky, tricky injury.
They're going to monitor it.
He is day-to-day, I'm told.
And I think there is some optimism that if this series does continue in the 6, 7,
that he's able to play.
Shams, you know what's interesting is that,
and I was telling Joy this earlier,
that, you know, most of America watches college basketball during March Madness.
We don't sit in January and watch a lot.
And most of us, obviously you're excluded from this,
but most of us watch the NBA when the playoffs start.
So we don't see John Moran.
We don't see Trey Young much.
And we also didn't watch a lot of Anthony Davis in New Orleans.
Could I make the argument that what has happened this year for the Lakers physically
is more who he is than last year?
I mean, you look at, obviously, he's missed more time this year than he missed last year.
I think last year, the way we saw that Lakers group play, and again, that was a special year for them, right?
They won a championship.
Anytime you win a championship, a lot of stuff has to go right.
Health is a big factor in that.
And you saw the way Anthony Davis, whenever he'd get hit, whenever he'd fall, I mean, he was springing right back up.
And that might also have to do with kind of that season.
Well, they got a four and a half month sabbatical, right in the middle of the season.
Right in the middle of the season, you're able to rejuvenate your body.
and by the time he got back in the bubble,
him and LeBron James looked,
there were a couple games they had to get right in the bubble games, right?
As far as the regular season games, they had to finish up.
But once they got into the playoffs,
that group was rolling, and you saw they didn't really miss a beat,
they went through their trials and tribulations in the playoffs,
but those two guys stayed healthy.
And health is a major factor.
This year, it just has not gone the way that I think this organization would have liked.
And injuries are a part of this.
Anthony Davis, thankfully for him,
He is locked into a full $190 million contract.
But listen, he's missed time this year.
There's no question about it.
Yeah.
So if the Clippers lost, it's a highly compensated front office.
It's a big front office.
Steve Ballmer spent a lot of money.
My takeaway was if they don't win, it's cabloom time.
They're going to make some changes.
Now, I think Luca, let's talk his health.
Can Luca, he's obviously now with his neck an issue, but a neck and a groin is different.
I mean, Chris Paul appeared to have some sort of nerve issue.
He looked great yesterday.
Where are we on Luca's health?
Because I do believe a healthy Luca is a different team.
Yeah, I'm told Luca Dantich is sore today, and that's a muscular injury that he's dealing
within his neck, I'm told, and that's something he's going to have to monitor over the next
couple days.
Kind of like Chris Paul, the only way those injuries get better is through rest and taking days off
and using that time off to rejuvenate your body.
And Chris Paul's injury, I'm told,
that's going to be a rest thing, right?
And he had an extra day in between games.
That's right.
You saw the way he looked.
He made six mid-range jumpers in game four.
He made six all of games one through three.
So that shows he's coming back to the Chris Paul of old.
He's finding his stride.
And if he continues to get better on this off day,
I think it will be, you know,
Phoenix is going to be in a good position.
The Lakers have to make shots in game five.
They shot 39% from the field.
in game four. That's just not going to cut it.
Even LeBron, one for seven from three,
that whole group, they need to shoot the ball better.
If they shoot the ball better, I do think LeBron can win,
will this team to victories.
I'm going back to the Dow's series. There's no question.
There has been a lot of pressure on those clippers.
No question.
They let go of Doc Rivers last year.
You can't blame the coaching staff anymore.
You have Ty Lou. You brought in some big name,
big money assistant coaches, Dan Craig,
who was well regarded from Miami.
Chauncey Billups, obviously, a former finals MVP, a longtime star player in the NBA.
Like, Dave brought in heavy weights as far as the coaching staff, Ty Lou.
We know all about his championship pedigree.
So where was the blame going to fall on this year, especially if they lost in first round?
You know, obviously they're not in that position now.
It's 2-2.
I do think they do have all the momentum now going into game 5.
Yeah.
So let's talk.
You broke the story on the Kyrie fans.
Let's give people an update.
That series is over.
And we kind of felt this coming.
And once Jalen Brown was not around, the matchups were bad for Boston.
Two stars also out yesterday.
Kemba Walker, Rob Williams, their status is up in the air.
They're banged up right now.
Fully staffed, they would struggle.
And they're not now.
Give me the latest.
You broke the story on the Kyrie fan.
Kind of lay it out for us and where are we at with that?
Yeah, so I'm told two fans were arrested last night.
And they're going to be, you know, a rain tomorrow in Boston.
And two fans.
One, with the Kyrie Irving incident, charged with assault and battery with use of a dangerous weapon with that water bottle thrown toward Kyrie Irving.
And I'm told that police were told by witnesses that that water bottle did graze Kyrie Irving's head.
And so that fan will be arraigned tomorrow.
And then another fan actually a little before was also arrested assault and battery toward a police officer.
So, you know, putting his hands on a police officer, shoving the police officer.
So you had two fans in Boston.
One was very, very publicized, as we see right there.
The other, not quite as much.
So I think this just encapsulates.
There's a lot of tension right now among fans.
But again, this is one or two fans out of 17,000 at that arena last night.
So the NBA, there's clearly they've sent out memos.
I've reported on memos that the NBA has sent out.
You know, they have sent out memos to teams and trying to, there will be new enhanced, you know,
Code of conduct and security measures in arenas now moving forward.
But there's no question.
The NBA is dealing with this problem.
There's a couple of bad apples here that I think that clearly are making waves.
If you're, the New York Knicks are interesting because we shouldn't be shocked.
You know, Tom Thibodeau's teams play really hard.
He demands a lot at practice.
He demands a lot of minutes.
And, you know, Mike Dunleavy, I've said this multiple times when I used to
cover Mike Dunlevy. He used to say, if you can get a committed team on the defensive end and play hard
every night, you can win a lot of games in this league. He goes, you're a 500 team. You don't have to be
great because of the schedule. Stars will take occasional days off. If you just show up with
eight guys in your rotation, grinding it, you're a 500 team in this league. And that's kind of what
the Knicks felt like. Do you think there's utter disappointment? I mean, Julius Randallel
in his agent don't have a ton of leverage going forward. But they also, he also feels like to a
large degree, Julius feels like the soul of this team. What do they look like next year to you,
Shams? I think their team that's going to try to continue to get star players. I think that's
really their next step. You're seeing it now. They don't have that next level gear, right? You
have Randall, Derek Rose has come out and he's been probably the best player throughout the
series. He really changed their season. I think if they hadn't gone out and gotten Derek Rose,
they probably would have been meddling for a playing tournament seating, right? Then they go out and
get Derek Rose is a starting level player.
They become a four-seed, get home court advantage.
And I think this is a win in and of itself.
And I thought going into the playoffs,
whichever team won this series,
you would have seen an elevated, I think,
urgency to continue getting better,
maybe even doing some drastic stuff
as far as going on and getting maybe another piece
because you felt like you were so close
to making the conference finals.
Sean, interesting.
I think we would all agree on the Knicks.
They need a score.
They need a juice guy.
Is it?
George if the clippers lose. Like, is there a name? Are there people that you think you
hear that would fit that would work? Because we know they play hard on the defensive end.
We know they've got grinders. R.J. Barrett's a young player that's emerging. But
they need a guy. They need a one. Who could be available? Yeah. The question is availability, right?
And that's always going to be, there's a difference between being available and guys that they're
monitoring. I think guys that they've been monitoring, they've been monitoring guys like
Victor LaDipo, who obviously had this season-ending injury.
and I'm told he is making progress.
He is expected to play at some point after November.
But, you know, guys like him, you're always, that organization is going to monitor
Carl Anthony Towns, Bradley Beal, you know, there's going to be, Damien,
there's always going to be guys that you monitor.
But, again, there's a difference, Colin, between going out and monitoring these guys
and actually having a legitimate chance.
And what types of assets does this team have to go get a player like that?
Is it R.J. Barrett?
They have a lot of draft picks now.
They have cap space.
They have cap space.
So there are different ways to get creative,
and that's really where this organization, I think,
is going to take that next step,
is looking into this off-season
and identifying guys that can help elevate your team.
I think this was a good growth year.
Now I think this franchise will look.
How will we be able to take that next step?
Joy spent a lot of time in Miami.
It's been a tough week for her.
I pick Milwaukee to win it all, and they looked dominant.
But when you watch Jimmy Butler, his history is he gets frustrated
with young players who aren't quite as committed as him.
that's his history. Tyler Hero has regressed. Maybe you've done some of the reporting.
There's more than one report out there that Tyler found himself liking the Miami nightlife.
And the young players have not grown. And when I watched Jimmy Butler the series,
I saw a frustrated, wildly talented player. They made a run at James Harden.
Are they going to, I mean, Shams, are they just going to blow this thing up? What's your gut feeling on this?
I mean, listen, they've got Jimmy Butler,
and Bam, out of bi on a contract for the next several years.
So I don't know if they're necessarily going to blow it up,
but there are decisions here that this franchise has to make Duncan Robinson,
a guy that, free agent, isn't he?
A guy that's going to be restricted free agent, Kendrick Nunn.
They have multiple free agent guys that they're going to have to decide on.
And so which direction do they go?
They were involved in those hardened conversations.
You know, depending on who you talk to, how serious were they?
Like, I never got to grasp.
You know, at the end of the day, that final race was between Philadelphia and Brooklyn.
who Brooklyn went out on that deal.
Miami wasn't really in it at the end.
So how serious were they?
Pat Riley's MO has always been,
I'm going to go and try to get a guy.
He did the same thing with Jimmy Butler in that training camp in 2018.
He went and made offers for Jimmy Butler,
put Josh Richardson on the table at that time,
put a couple other guys at the time.
I'm told at one point, you know,
I think Minnesota felt like they were close on a deal.
And then Pat Riley kind of backed off.
And once the season started going,
and once they were close to game one,
Pat Riley said, this is the team I have.
I'm not doing anything else. I don't know if that's
just an old old school measure
or what. Like this is the team I have. I'm sticking
with these guys. I'm not engaging anymore. So
they really weren't in it for James Hardin
at the end. So I think they
will have to look internally. Tyler
Hero needs to take that next step. You saw
him play in the bubble so well.
He just, you know, over the course of this year,
he did not look like that same player in the bubble.
He looked great at times,
but he didn't bring that same.
I think you saw a different level of swag
to him as well in the bubble. I was in the bubble.
You can definitely see from his body language
how he was playing, how he was feeling with
that group, with Jimmy Butler, with Bam out of bio.
You didn't quite get that same type of
feel this year, just seeing them.
Obviously, you're not going to as many games,
so you're probably working twice as hard to get
your information, which you break more
stories than anybody out there.
The Brooklyn,
I'm fascinated by Brooklyn.
I thought it was actually good
for the league the Clippers lost last
because you didn't want the belief system to be, you know, load management wins your title.
Just don't play in the regular season.
So when the Clippers lost, it was kind of this, that load management stuff is not good for chemistry.
Whether that's true or not, I thought it was good for the league, that you want stars to play.
Brooklyn cobbled these guys together.
They are so skilled, so ridiculously talented.
And I think to myself, if they win, the message to the players is just jo-join guys,
which I don't love.
I do think drafting, developing, I think fans like that.
What do you make of Brooklyn the way it's been put together?
Do you think the NBA loves it?
Do you think they're a little apprehensive about it?
What do you, how do you, if they just fly through these playoff shops and they win a championship,
is Adam Silver going, yeah, or is he going, oh boy, I'm not sure I love this.
I don't think, you know, in talking to people around the league,
I don't think Adam Silver really has a horse in any type of race.
But I think what has been clear, when these super teams are made,
whether it's Miami before Golden State, before with Kevin Durant,
like there is so much attention on these guys.
There's so much awareness around these guys.
I think it's hard to say it's a bad thing because there's so much hype,
there's so much energy around this roster.
There is a lot of pressure.
There's a lot of pressure that comes with building a team like this.
And I think, you know, what we've seen with Kevin Durant, you know,
getting Kyrie Irving to come.
I'm aboard with him to Brooklyn and him and James Harden and Kyrie Irving working out together in L.A.
for multiple weeks last offseason.
Like, he's been all about building the right habits with this team.
And I think what we've seen with that organization is a lot of input from him and what he sees
and how he feels about different guys.
And I think that is a positive for that organization.
You don't want to just make teams blindly, right?
And I think that is a positive for Kevin Durant here in Brooklyn.
I mean, this is him, James Harden, Kyrie.
serving. They try to make it so that
everyone feels like they're a part of it from Blake Griffin
on down to Bruce Brown. I think there
is a lot of team camaraderie on this
team that does make it a positive.
By the way, so how old are you now?
I'm 27.
It's insane to me. So you go to Loyola.
Four years ago, you get out of Loyola.
What was your first job?
Well, my first job was
I wrote for RealGM.com.
So that was kind of my first job.
This is what junior year of high school.
actually. So my first job out of college, I mean, I was at Yahoo Sports. I was at the vertical
for three years. So you were employed as a college student. Yeah. You're one of those
overachievers. I don't know, my overachievers. I probably didn't have a life. I'm just always amazed.
Good for you. Shams Charania does a great job. He's a senior NBA insider at the athletic
and stadium. So it breaks all sorts of stories. We'd love seeing you again whenever you're in
L.A. Stop by. Always. We will at some point have food and drinks.
and beverages to elevate your experience, Shams.
At least we could do for our great guests.
Congratulations to you, your family, and everybody.
Thanks, ma'am. Thanks, Tom. Appreciate it.
