Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On The Look Back at it podcast. In 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me.
Starting point is 00:00:39 I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
Starting point is 00:01:27 but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds, I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go, Hour 2, the great Chris Bosch, the Hall of Famer in a couple of minutes, live in L.A. It's The Herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. Brought to you by Jersey Mike Subs, be a sub above. It is great to have you in for our number two. Tonight is a massive NBA playoff night. Some teams getting eliminated.
Starting point is 00:02:54 I want to talk about this. Brad Stevens has now stopped being the coach of the Celtics. he now runs the Boston Celtics as of this moment. Danny Aange is gone. I will defend the Celtics. I think they've been well run a little timid at times in their acquisitions. But I will say, let me defend Boston on this. So there's three organizations in sports.
Starting point is 00:03:19 The Boston Celtics, the Green Bay Packers and the Utah Jazz, winning cultures. A good ownership. Well, two of the three have good ownership. These are good franchises. but they have an obstacle that we need to address. Running a pro franchise is basically a bar stool. You have three legs. Three ways, three legs to get players.
Starting point is 00:03:41 You can draft them. You can trade for them. Or free agency. They choose you. The Packers and the Jazz and the Celtics, they're kind of working on two legs in the barstool. They don't do great on the players choose. you for different reasons. Green Bay is a little tiny town.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Boston's racial history, African-American players of pushback. Utah. And it's kind of in the mountains. LeBron James joked. Remember that funny joke of the All-Star game? Even as a kid, we didn't choose Utah players when we were playing. You know, whatever that, what's that game called? Basketball game that kids NBA jam. Yeah. Like LeBron's like, and Kevin Durant laughed.
Starting point is 00:04:30 He's like, we never choose Utah guys. We knew they were great. We never chose them. So there's a reality with the Celtics that has to be stated. They draft pretty well. They've made good trades. They don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they're not a top choice for free agents. But the Celtics, the Packers and the Jazz have either had good ownership, good general managers, good coaches.
Starting point is 00:04:52 So they've been very, very successful. Usually there's a lot of places that don't in that barstool of three ways to get. a player. Draft, trade, or free agency. A lot of them aren't nearly as good as the Packers. Buffalo for years and years was not great for free agency. Guys in the winter, you know, in the fall winter don't want to play in Buffalo, right? The cold weather, they didn't do well in free agency. And they weren't drafting good players and they weren't developing them. Now Buffalo has a great GM and a great coach, so they're fine. But Boston is not, I know it's got a great, there's this sort of Boston Celtics. They had a great franchise. I'm a great franchise. I
Starting point is 00:05:30 I think they face an obstacle that doesn't get talked about a ton, but Kauai Leonard didn't want to play there. And AD did not want to play there. And those are the kind of guys, AD and Kauai that are deciding these playoff series. A lot of the top players don't want to play in Boston. So I thought they had great success. I mean, Brad Stevens is very interesting.
Starting point is 00:05:50 So Brad's super smart, but he doesn't have an agent. So Brad himself would prefer not dealing with an agent. Now, running the Celtics, he's going to be on the phone with agents all day. We'll see how that works. In the NBA, either as a coach or a general manager, you got to deal with stuff you don't love. As a coach, it's the travel, it's the film study. It's an exhausting life.
Starting point is 00:06:16 General managers don't have to go on every road trip, but they got to deal with agents and salary caps. And, you know, sometimes dealing with a player like Kyrie who rejects the franchise. So, listen, there's a headache at every corner in professional sports, right? Like, just because you're moving upstairs, the headaches don't go away and the challenges don't go away. Now, Brad Stevens, who doesn't have an agent, is going to have to deal with agents all the time. And he's going to see what Danny Aange had to deal with. Now, the Celtics, Nick Wright came on, and the criticism of Danny Aange was, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:51 he had to win every trade. He a little bit paralyzed by that. I got to win the trade or I'm not doing it. there's some truth in that. You know, Les Need of the Rams kind of views it differently. I've talked to Les Neat of the Rams, a very smart GM.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Les wants a star. He's less worried about winning the trade and getting what makes a football team better. Like, Les Needs not one of these guys. Pete Carroll's not one of these guys where they lose a ton of sleep on, well, that was a winning trade and that was a lose. I want Jamal Adams.
Starting point is 00:07:24 You know, I want Jalen Ramsey. Can he make us better now? Let's go with it. and I think Boston has sort of lacked that. Let's just get better now and win. Because you got Jason Tatum, you got Jalen Brown. You're really one, really good piece away. I mean, you've been to three of the last four Eastern Conference championships.
Starting point is 00:07:41 So it's not like you whiffed, but in the NBA, super aggressive wins. I mean, the Lakers are a prime example. They're going to blow this team up. There's no question. They're not going to beat the Sons because AD is grimacing doing pregame stuff. Like, AD is done. You cannot have a groin strain. forget having a groin strain and walking on a treadmill at a high speed for an hour.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Try playing an NBA game for two and a half hours. You're not going to be able to do it. So I think the season's over for the Lakers and they'll just cobloom, blow it up and start over. It's okay to do that. The teams that are doing that in sports are winning a lot of the championships. They're starting over. But I think Boston is a kind of uniquely challenged situation. And let me talk more about AD because AD, you know, when a Lakers season is going to end,
Starting point is 00:08:27 stuff. Remember the Laker team, Kobe Shack, Phil Jackson, they faced Detroit, and they were favored. So the way the Lakers work, it's one thing for the Lakers to lose a series. But when the Lakers are favored to win and lose, they blow stuff up. That was the Kobe Shack team. They faced Detroit in the finals. Carl Malone favored to win, lost. And Kobe and Shaq were no longer teammates. So if you're going to blow up Kobe and Shack, you'd blow up anybody, right? And I don't think LeBron and AD are going to be separate. I think LeBron and the Lakers have to have a heart-to-heart with AD and say, bruh, you came into this season, out of shape. Like out of shape.
Starting point is 00:09:12 This was, I know it's a condensed year. Yeah, I got hurt too. But I do think it's heart-to-heart, look-in-the-mirate time for AD, which is you cannot play your way into shape. You can't do that. Dame Lillard, Steph Curry, LeBron, these guys come into the season ready to play. 90% in game shape. So I do think we're getting to that point with AD because you can certainly make the argument that last year, because of the pandemic, was a complete outlier in that Anthony Davis got a four and a half month hiatus in season.
Starting point is 00:09:52 and that's the only season in which he was all dog all the time. He was rested. They were good. He showed up every night. But AD's career is a lot of can't play at the night. I mean, Charles Barkley was joking last night. He calls him street clothes because he's always in his street close. And LeBron, by the way, we've got sound of this, admitted he thinks Anthony's done for the series.
Starting point is 00:10:19 You know, my mindset is that he's not going to be able to play in games. but that's my mindset. I have to go in with that. My mindset for me is as if AD is won't be in the game in game six. And if something changes, then we go from there. But I'm preparing as if he's not. I mean, remember, LeBron put all his eggs in the AD basket. He put him in Space Jam.
Starting point is 00:10:46 LeBron knew they were going to give up players and picks. LeBron had clutch sports. You know, clutch sports is Rich Paul and LeBron or good friends. They represent him. LeBron was willing to give him number 23. So LeBron went all in on AD. And there were times, yes, that DeWade wasn't available for LeBron. But that's because D. Wade was hurt because of how hard he plays and how committed he is
Starting point is 00:11:17 and how fearless D. Wade was as a smaller player. A.D. is not available because he's not committing. He's not in good shape. And so I think LeBron has to have a heart to heart. Not all injuries are the same. Chris Bosch has a new book out. It's sensational. I know a lot of people write books.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Everybody's got a podcast and everybody's got a book. This one's called Letters to a Young Athlete. It was released yesterday. And it's got so many life lessons. And Chris is different. Chris goes very deep on thoughtful things about communication and egos and what he had to deal with with that Miami Heat Dynasty, which is very rare. Chris was the best high school player in Texas, All-American in college, All-Star in Toronto, and then got to Miami. Hey, Chris, can you be the third scoring option?
Starting point is 00:12:10 And Chris Bosch now joins us live in the herd. Good to talk to you again, Chris. You're one of my favorite guys. You know that. I want to start with that. Is that you're very rare. You don't bring stars in and say, listen, we're going to need you to be a decoy. We're going to need you to guard.
Starting point is 00:12:28 And I want you to tell the audience you write about it in your book, the battle you had with yourself to really learn a different dimension of basketball beyond just scoring. Yeah, absolutely. You know, I dive into, you know, the ego. And that had a lot to do with it. When I first got to Miami, I just knew that I was going to be the leading scorer. I just knew that I was going to have my touches on the same left block at the same frequency. And on top of that, LeBron and Duane are going to be making place for me. So I'll be, you know, the benefit of their assist, you know.
Starting point is 00:13:07 And I had to learn more facets of the game. So I had to learn that, yes, there's this thing called defense. that you have to get better at. It's this thing called sacrifice that you have to get used to because in order for this team to be successful, they don't necessarily need you to be the leading scorer. So those were things that I had to get used to. But eventually, I learned more about the game.
Starting point is 00:13:33 And that was the best part in the whole experience for me. I feel that it made me a more well-rounded player. And just the lessons that I learned from those experiences, has tremendously helped me even to this day. You know, it's interesting when you play with LeBron, you talk about how exhausting it is. The paparazzi, the coverage, the expect. I mean, in Toronto and Georgia Tech,
Starting point is 00:14:00 you were a great player, and we just talked about Chris Bosch's great. But I asked you this yesterday in my podcast, I said, then you go to Miami. And for the first time in your life, you're getting criticized. It's not about scoring points. take me and tell young athletes and people listening the first time you dealt with Chris Bosch is a bum. Chris Bosch is what is that like for an athlete? It's a crazy experience.
Starting point is 00:14:28 You know, just like you were saying for me, when I was in Toronto, we weren't a championship team. Every year we didn't have what it, you know, I guess took at that national level to get that notoriety. So just by nature, people aren't intimidated, right? you're not going to be my team, so it's okay. Once I got to Miami, yet to hear how people responded, you know, in my naive nature, in the beginning, I thought people would understand that team coming together and they thought they, I thought they'd be happy. I totally, I totally didn't think that, you know, Michael Jordan got criticized, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:05 Kobe Bryant got criticized, you know, it was crazy in the Kobe and Shaq era. It was just at the height of popularity when that happens, criticism. is going to just be a part of it. It's a part of the game. It's a part of sports. And I say it, my book, it's a tax on success. So you better get used to it and you will have to pay for it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:27 You know, it's interesting watching LeBron in this series, and he's aged very gracefully, very much Tom Brady. He's been refined. He's been smart. But, you know, we all know the story on Father Time. And when you had your medical condition, and Dwayne Wade would miss time because he plays so hard. I think LeBron understood it.
Starting point is 00:15:48 He moved out of Miami, but he understood it. He didn't lose respect for you. It's just a medical condition. You found out in a doctor's office, your career was over. Like that, that happens. Yeah, that was two years later. Yeah. It was actually two years after he left, yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:02 But with AD, there's always been the knock that he's not really committed in the offseason, and now he's falling apart. and I do wonder if there's a little resentment because LeBron is so committed, Chris. Do you think there's maybe a little resentment like AD, but you didn't come into this season in shape? I mean, you know LeBron pretty well. Do you think it's possible that there is that little reservoir of,
Starting point is 00:16:29 come on, man, you've got to commit like I do. I think they definitely have to have a conversation. You know, of course, coming off, we know how hard it is coming off of championship year, but they had the even shorter year, right, coming out of the bubble and coming into this year. So it was even more important that everyone show up in shape and make sure they're ready to do what they needed to do. I don't know what's in the locker room, but they definitely have to come together better as a team. I can't tell you that.
Starting point is 00:17:02 And if they do get eliminated in the first round, yeah, they'll have to have some conversations. They'll have to make sure that they communicate. those things and if that's the case, you know, talk to each other and say, okay, because yeah, Brian, he worked extremely hard and, you know, as a leader, sometimes it is tough if you're, if others aren't working as hard as you. And, you know, you feel like you're just out there solo, then that's a tough thing to do with. But in those championship opportunities, you know, any mid-season is a blown opportunity. So, you know, hopefully, you know, they'll figure it out and we'll see what happens.
Starting point is 00:17:40 out, it's called Letters to a Young Athlete. We saw your dynasty with three stars, and then Golden State had three stars, and now Brooklyn has three. And they're all brilliant offensive players. So when you watch Brooklyn, can you kind of relate to, all right, whose night is it? Who's got to step back a little? I mean, when you watch Brooklyn, there's a little Miami heat feel to it, Chris, is there not? It is. But you know what? They play in a, in more of the positional era. One of the things I like about seeing them play is how much space is created on the court and how much they're, you know, how much they move the ball, how unselfish they are. They really do play together. They do a great job of moving the ball. And, you know, they have three of the best
Starting point is 00:18:25 one-on-one players in the world, you know, so anytime they need to get a bucket, you know, they have a very high chance of doing that. Their challenges is going to be on defense and which packages they're going to run when times get tough. I'm I'm going to be very intrigued with this next matchup with the Bucks. We'll see how it plays out. Yeah. Chris Bosch is joining us. By the way, we just get word on this. Coach K at Duke has decided to retire after this upcoming season.
Starting point is 00:18:58 You played under him on Team USA. Wow. That's my, wow. What was his, I mean, every coach you've had has a gift. What was Coach K's gift to you? He was such a motivator. He made it a great experience competing for a gold medal with Team USA. He made you aware of the importance.
Starting point is 00:19:23 And I just loved hearing them crack jokes and have a good time in the meetings before film or after practice or something like that. He did a masterful job and, you know, communicating. One of the things that I loved that I even wrote about in my book as well, there was a story when he told me. about how my along on my arms were on defense and, and, you know, how I can contribute on defense. And I really, really heard that and took message, you know, took his message deeply. And that's how I ended up playing on that team.
Starting point is 00:19:57 You know, that was what I wanted to do. I wanted to play more minutes. I got to close out of gold medal game, all from, you know, what he told me in that moment after dinner. So, you know, he's just one of those guys that just know basketball. he was able to bring a collective group of all-stars, pretty much, make them a team in a short amount of time. You know, we only had like three years to put that thing together,
Starting point is 00:20:20 and, you know, we came out successful, but that is crazy. He's retiring. He has had a legendary story career. He's one of the greats. By the way, LeBron left the bench with five minutes to go last night. Some people push back, and my takeaway is, LeBron, you write about this in your book. his commitment to stretching and treatment is insane.
Starting point is 00:20:45 And I said this earlier is I'm not going to question LeBron's commitment. Take our audience to, when you play with LeBron, you're a guy that commits to your body. His level of commitment in like treatment and stretching. It was, man, world class. Probably the only person in the world doing that. I thought I worked hard on my game. And then seeing him, I said, godly, okay, he was the reason. why I would buy a new machine or massage table or, you know, just being forward thinking with the
Starting point is 00:21:14 technology, putting in the time. He put a tremendous amount of time into just training. And this is without the basketball. I'm not even talking about the hours and hours and hours that you put in on the court. It's those extracurricular hours that you need to, you know, strengthen those little muscles and, you know, meditate and stuff like that to keep your mind pliable to make sure you're ready to perform so you can't go out there and run a couple miles and hopefully score a few points. But I had never seen anyone from such a young age put the time in. And he definitely motivated me to make sure that I take care of my body and I do better as a player. And even now, you know, I take those principles with me now. Author of Letters to a Young Athlete,
Starting point is 00:22:04 There's the cover right there. Forward by the Great Pat Riley. credit to basketball, Chris. I love you so much, and thanks for stopping by today. Thanks a lot. Thanks for having me, man. You bet. Chris Bosch. Good book. Yeah, Coach K is stepping down after the upcoming season. First of all, I like coaches who step away and still have a life. Bob Stoops. Bill Cowher at like 49 years old. Coach K obviously is still an elite coach, but the basketball world has changed. College basketball now feels under attack. And I think Coach K sees it and wants to enjoy, by the way, he won't.
Starting point is 00:22:47 I know a lot of people are thinking, oh, Brad Stevens is going to bring him up to the NBA. I think he will as a consultant. I think Brad Stevens will put Mike Shishchevsky on a payroll and say, next through two, three years, you know all these high school college guys. I think Shoshchewski is a valuable resource to any NBA team. for the next three or four years because he knows all these 50s. Mike Sischofsky starts recruiting Zion at 15. I talked to Coach K years ago about that.
Starting point is 00:23:18 He's like, people think it's a year process. It is a five-year process to get Jason Tatum. You've got to be in on these guys at 14. So for the next four years, if I was Boston and Brad Stevens, I'd put Coach K in the payroll. He wouldn't be the coach, although he could do it. I just put him on the payroll. One more herd?
Starting point is 00:23:36 The herd streams 24 hours a day. seven days a week within the iHeart radio app search heard to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like imagine an olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged it's the enhanced games some call it grotesque others say it's unleashing human potential either way the podcast superhuman documented it all embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year within probably 10 days i'd put on 10 pounds. Starting point is 00:24:27 in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek.
Starting point is 00:25:32 And I'm Alex English. We pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Thank you finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:26:23 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan, Ryan, Korn, and I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:26:46 Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:27:00 And that's two different levels. of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. It's a monumental main event when the USOS challenge Ray and Dominic Mysterio for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships. It's an all-new Friday night Smackdown, live at 8 Eastern 7 Central on Fox. Duke coach Mike Shosheshefsky, Coach K, is going to retire after this season.
Starting point is 00:27:39 So he's not going to the Celtics. He's going to coach Duke for one more year. And you just saw Roy Williams retire. And you're seeing a lot of these college coaches of some certain age. College basketball now is being marginalized. The transfer portal. You know, the NBA seems to resent college basketball. It's just a tougher sport.
Starting point is 00:28:00 NCAA's guidance and leadership has not always been optimal. So Coach K, I think the time is right for Roy Williams. I think it's right for Coach K. And I think Coach K has huge value as a consultant for anybody in this league for the next three to four years because he knows all these high school and college guys. He knows the baggage. He knows the liabilities. He knows the strengths.
Starting point is 00:28:25 Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing. So the Celtics announced this morning that Danny Aange is retiring. He was with the team for 18 years, he was the third longest-tenured lead executive of any NBA franchise.
Starting point is 00:28:48 Brad Stevens will now take over as president of basketball operations. After serving as head coach for the past eight seasons, the team will begin their search for the next head coach, and Aange will work with the team on the transit. through the off season. This has sparked quite a spectrum of reactions across the sports universe. I always felt like the Celtics were a bit overrated during this term with Brad Stevens. They never really had the superstar they needed to compete with some of the other
Starting point is 00:29:23 organizations around the league. And that's not to say this was a failure. It just depends on what you are making. measurement of success is. If you're, you know, the level of success that you aim to reach is one game seven in the conference finals, then you had a successful term there. If you're the Celtics, though, that's, that's not what success is. That's not what that city is about. It's not what the Boston Celtics are about. So I don't consider it to be a failure. I just feel like the whole situation was always overrated and overstated how much success they were actually having and how close they
Starting point is 00:29:54 actually were to a championship. He has a 55.7 win percentage in the regular season and he's 38 and 40 in the playoffs. And as I said, they pushed the Cavs to a game seven in the conference finals one time in 2018. So do I think that this is the right move to put him in charge of everything? Not necessarily, but they feel like he is qualified and smart enough to do the job. So they want to keep him in the building. I guess that makes sense. Well, I mean, listen, I've worked in broadcasting for 30 years. The company I, used to work at keeps people around who don't get ratings on shows because they like their intellectual power and they're good in the building. There is value in just keeping smart people
Starting point is 00:30:41 around and elevating them, even if, you know, you don't get the results you want is that, like, I look at Brad Stevens and I'm like, I'd like his brain in the building. I don't know if they'll succeed, but I would not. I said this earlier. About a week ago, we talked about this or two weeks ago. If you want to fire Brad Stevens, fine, but he'll end up coaching Milwaukee for the next eight years in Janus and Middleton, and you'll have to face him. He's not going to be unemployed very long. Yeah, he's not going to be unemployed. And I don't think he should be unemployed. I don't think he's a failure. I think he doesn't work at the NBA level, which is why the move to the front office doesn't make any sense to me, because while he might be a brilliant guy,
Starting point is 00:31:18 you went from not being able to coach stars to now you're going to have to recruit them, which is a massive part of what the NBA is. So think about it. Brad Stevens got to three conference championships, and there is that view that he didn't succeed. Jason, kids going to get another job, and he can't win a playoff series. He's been linked to them. He can't get a, he can't win a playoff series, but he'll get another shot. Are we being? Yeah, I mean, if you, if you start looking at these coaches in the NBA, like Tom Thibodeau, like he gets another job and we're like, okay, that works. And we're like, now I'm watching them in the playoffs and this is what Tibado's team. Well, yeah, what is, what is the measurement of success? Like, what is works? Is
Starting point is 00:31:56 works, you're making the playoffs. Brad Stevens is going to get you to the playoffs. Well, I would argue. He didn't make you to the finals. No, but he'll get you to the conference finals and then he'll lose to a team with better players. Like I mean, Tibbs can't, Tibbs struggles to us. Yeah, I mean, I don't think the Tibbs and Brad Stevens are on the same level as far as that
Starting point is 00:32:15 does. But Jason Kidd will get another job. He struggles to win a playoff series. So what is, I guess, I think people are being too hard on him. If you can get to the conference championship, like Matt LaFlewer to the Packers gets the conference championship. That is damn hard in the NFL. Yeah, I don't think it makes him a bad coach.
Starting point is 00:32:32 I think that's a little bit hyperbolic. Yeah, I think a lot of people are saying. Yeah. But that's not what the Celtics are about. If this was the Bucks, if this was a bunch of other teams, this is a successful tenure and he would not get fired. But there's expectations.
Starting point is 00:32:49 When there's expectations, that changes the situation. I mean, think about this. Frank Vogel got fired twice. Then he gets LeBron and wins a championship. And now we view Frank Vogel differently. Well, did Frank Vogel become a better coach or just get LeBron? I don't know that. I mean, I don't look at Frank Vogel differently.
Starting point is 00:33:05 I think Frank Vogel was always a good coach who didn't have a superstar. I think if Brad Stevens had a superstar, he could win a championship. That's what I think. Can Brad Stevens coexist with a superstar is the question. And maybe that's why he's moving up to the front office. I mean, maybe that maybe he looks at it and thinks, you know, the modern player, I'm better finding him than coaching him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:22 I'm better. Yeah. It's an interesting move by the front office. I just, I think people are questioning what he has done as a coach to qualify him for that. Let's go back to this. If you don't move him up and you lose him in the building, like sometimes you have to elevate somebody at your place of employment because you're afraid to lose him or her.
Starting point is 00:33:42 I don't know if elevate is what I would do. I understand what you're saying about like a brain can be useful in other places, but Brad Stevens is going to get another job somewhere else. So to your point, they're going to lose him, keep him, but you're not really changing. anything as far as the organization goes because you're moving him into a larger role. So whatever he does as a coach or whatever decisions he wanted to make as a coach, he will now make for the whole organization. What if Brad Stevens was offered?
Starting point is 00:34:08 Well, he was offered multiple college jobs. The Celtics knew about it. And the only way to keep him was to fire range and move him up. I think that's not reported yet. Chris Mannix next hour. No, I mean, I'm sure he does have a lot of options. But it's a matter of what did he do and what is he going to do as a GM. I don't know. That I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:26 Yeah. So Anthony Davis was forced to sit out of the Lakers game five lost to the sons, the strained groin. Charles Barkley gave A.D. a new nickname when discussing why the Lakers won't win this year. Forget about the championship. They can't win this series without street clothes. I'm not even... You want to explain that? I'll call him Anthony's Street Clothes Davis because he's always in street clothes.
Starting point is 00:34:53 That's very harsh. AD has missed at least 10 games in six of his nine seasons. He's a career high, 37 games missed this season. I could read you the list. Well, I could start reading the list of the myriad of injuries he's had in his career. It's a operation board. Yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot.
Starting point is 00:35:12 I would rather have a full screen of it. It's a graphic of it. It's too much for me to read. I'll bore you. The point is he's always injured. And this is not new. And it is not new because of the Lakers. This is what he is.
Starting point is 00:35:24 and maybe some of it is how he trains and some players are just injury prone and that's how their bodies are set up. I don't like to compare anyone to LeBron James or Tom Brady. They're just outliers. But there are also guys who are healthy throughout their career and take care of their bodies and don't have this kind of injury history.
Starting point is 00:35:39 It's not like AD wants to be injured, but things are sometimes a result of how you train. Now, this particular season, I will say, I'm not terribly surprised because they did go to the finals last year with the heat. They did have a short off season, and it's a condensed season. So having a injury prone player injured in the playoffs is not terribly, shouldn't be terribly shocking to everybody.
Starting point is 00:36:00 What is surprising is that knowing this is what Anthony Davis is, and we talk about this all the time, once you know what a player is, which we have more than enough evidence that this is what Anthony Davis is. Charles Barclay is making a joke, but it's based off of reality. That's why it's kind of funny. Like he is always in street clothes. You had to build a team around that. Like you have to assume Anthony Davis is going to miss some time. How are we going to compensate for that in points? And how are we going to be able to adjust to that against a great team like the Sons?
Starting point is 00:36:28 I mean, we're talking so much about the Lakers. The Sons have been incredible. And Chris Paul has shown his value in this series tremendously. Like, you have to be able to plan for that. That's what I don't understand. It's not like Anthony Davis is being Anthony Davis. This is what happens. Well, yeah, they did get Andre Drummond probably as a backup big.
Starting point is 00:36:43 I mean, size-wise, it's, it's, it's, it's, drummond's not going to be around next season. But there's just a lot of questions that have to be asked of Anthony Davis as soon as the season. and ends, which I think is in about two days. Well, here's some more news. Joelle and Bede suffered a right knee injury to the Sixers in game four in the loss of the Wizards on Monday. He got an MRI yesterday, which revealed he has a small meniscus tear in his knee. Not good news.
Starting point is 00:37:09 The injury will be managed with physical therapy and treatment program. He is out for game five tonight and is day to day going forward. Okay, so when I pick Milwaukee to win the championship, one of the things I said was they don't have a history of injuries. Yonis doesn't get hurt. Middleton doesn't get hurt. Remember we picked our championship and everybody goes, Milwaukee and I'm like, well, they are better.
Starting point is 00:37:30 They got Drew Holiday. But part of it is, in a condensed season, attrition appears to be winning all these series. I mean, the Suns Lakers, it's going to be decided by injuries. Mavs, Clippers, could be decided by Lucas' injury. Now, this series, I think they'll get through it, but they're not winning another series of M. no way. No, they're favored by six and a half tonight. They'll win, yeah. They'll win tonight.
Starting point is 00:37:55 So maybe they'll have a little, a few days to get him back. But this is, this is very concerning. By the way, Atlanta's healthy. Utah now looks healthy. They could make that a long series. Oh, I think Atlanta. I mean, we're assuming Atlanta is going to win. They're up three-one. So they can make that a longer series. I really feel like whoever wins this Brooklyn Milwaukee series at this point is is going to be in the finals. That is a huge injury for Joelle Embed. I know that a meniscus you can rehab, but you don't necessarily have to have surgery on it,
Starting point is 00:38:26 but you're in the middle of the playoffs. Like, that's something that you want to rest and get healthy. Oh, God, yeah. Good stuff, Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd

Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:41:11 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Starting point is 00:42:51 stephen jackson of fox sports NBA analyst 14 years in the NBA he's been in a lot of these big playoff series let i'm going to get right to the point stephen on anthony davis i've heard rumors for years he does not commit in the off season he comes into a season plays himself into shape and my takeaway is if i was lebron who is one of the hardest working guys in the league I would look at Anthony Davis and have a big long look at him and say, bruh, you can't come into these seasons out of shape. I think one of the reasons he's been hurt this year, he doesn't commit to his body. Do you, I mean, do you think these are random injuries or some guys, they come in
Starting point is 00:43:26 and they get banged up because they don't take care of their body? Yeah, some guys just injury prone. I think with AD, I wouldn't say he doesn't work. I've seen count his videos, and I know a number of trainers that he hangs out with and works with during the summertime. So he definitely put it in the work. and you don't get that good overnight. You have to work at it.
Starting point is 00:43:46 He's just fragile, man. He's one of those guys that, regardless of what happens or how good he is, he's just fragile and he's injury prone. But this is karma for them. You can't sign the six man of the year and throw him at the end of the bench. Treat him like trash.
Starting point is 00:44:03 Then when you need him, you expect him to come out and save the day. They mistreated Montrez-Rarell. They haven't been playing him. Now they need him. And they should have known what Anthony Davis being injury prone, they should have been, they should have known that they was going to have to rely on this guy at some point. You didn't sign this six men out of year to be at the end of the
Starting point is 00:44:19 bench. This is karma that's haunting them now. And Montrez is not mentally there, so they don't have a guy to step in for AD, but AD has always been injury prone. And this is something they should expect it because this is what the past has told us about AD. Yeah. So, you know, it's interesting. Brooklyn's got three stars, but you were a great defender. There is an alpha and a toughness. Milwaukee went and got Drew Holiday and P.J. Tucker. Those are dogs. Those guys will defend you. I look at Brooklyn and I say, oh, that's a lot of scoring. Anybody want to defend? I am a little cynical of Brooklyn. I don't think they get to the finals. Am I nuts? You're not nuts because if they don't play defense, you know, it's going to be hard.
Starting point is 00:45:01 The Greek freak had average 40 on them the last two games. Of course, James was didn't play the last two games. So they're going to see that different dynamic. But championship teams play defense. You have to get stops. And, you know, this is when Steve Nash is going to, his coaching is really going to get tested. You know your guy's going to score. What defensive, what defensive game plan can you put in to stop Janus or make it difficult for him? I have to be honest.
Starting point is 00:45:25 Those three stars in Brooklyn, they all have taken the challenge of the one-on-one defense. They all have taken the challenge and they all have gotten better. But this is going to be the biggest test for them against Milwaukee. And if they can some kind of way stop Milwaukee or kind of slow him down, they can win. but if the Janice plays the same way he played in regular season, I don't see Brooklyn making another series. Clippers Mavs tied. Who do you like and why?
Starting point is 00:45:49 Well, I got to go with the Clippers. They have more dogs. Lucas is great. Luca's something we've never seen before. I'm a big fan of Luca. But then you have a whole bunch of puppies over there. K.K.K.K.K.K.K.P. hasn't lived to his expectations. He's not a dog. He's not physical.
Starting point is 00:46:05 They have some solid players, but they don't have guys. who are just dogs. They don't have guys who are going to go out and just dominate and fight to the end. Tim Hardaway is a great shooter. What else can he do?
Starting point is 00:46:15 You don't have too many guys. The only person to me that actually showed effort and showed like they had a little dog on their care was Beaubon last game. Bobon came out of there. We hit a couple of shots and was talking trash.
Starting point is 00:46:26 You never see that out of Bobon. Lucas is doing everything he can for this team, but they don't have enough to beat the Clippers. The Clippers have four or five new dynamics to this team, Adam Rondo with his championship experience.
Starting point is 00:46:39 Kauai and Paul George are going to lead this team. You got Zubak playing well. They switched the lineup and brought Patoon in to play defense on Luka. They have a lot of different dynamics to this team that can make them win and make them better. The Dallas don't have that. All they have is Luka and one person can't win a series. By the way, Kauai is not a real verbal guy. He's a different personality.
Starting point is 00:46:59 Can you be a one in this league without being real communicative? Yeah, because that's why you have guys like Pets. Patrick Beverly. That's why you have guys like Rondo. That's why you have guys like DeMarcus cousins. Those guys can be the vocal guys. But a lot of times, you're talking as with your play. And the best players do that, i.e. Tim Duncan. He didn't talk much, but he did it with his plate. And I think Kauai is one of those guys. Stephen Jackson joining us. By the way, Suns Lakers, I've said this, Stephen. I think the sons were a better team when Chris Paul's healthy. I think they were, I think they are. I think
Starting point is 00:47:32 they'll win the series. I think we've overvalued the Lakers. Your thoughts? No, we didn't overvalue him. We just know what AD and Braun are together. They can win any series. They can win the championship every year with those two guys together. But at the same time, we're seeing that the supporting cast is not what we expected. Yeah. I never expected Wesley Matthews to come in to be a defensive stop or a score.
Starting point is 00:47:57 He hasn't done this whole career. I didn't expect Schroeder to come in and just dominate. You can't play 20 minutes in the playoffs on the road in the big game and let her egg, Schroeder, I don't get it, especially when AD's not out there. Somebody has to step up. So a lot of stuff has gone wrong with this team, like I said, with the way they handle Montrez, and for guys not being able to play in these big games, and they've been relying too much on AD, and LeBron is starting to show now.
Starting point is 00:48:23 Yeah. Stephen Jackson, he's got all that smoke. He and Matt Barnes have a podcast. That's his podcast space right there. It's great seeing you again, haven't talked in a while, continued success, and way to crush it, man. Appreciate it. Thank you, man. Thanks for having me. I was good to see.
Starting point is 00:48:37 Good to see you, Stephen Jackson. By the way, the Celtics, Danny Aange out. Brad Stevens moves up. I'm not on social media today yet. Apparently Brad Stevens is, you know, getting a lot of pushback. Folks, it could be this simple. That Brad Stevens was getting massive offers in college, like $10 million a year offers, and the Celtics didn't want to lose him.
Starting point is 00:48:57 So they offered him the president's job. Like, there are certain times in America, corporate America, if you really think you've got a manor-old, woman that's really smart. And they start getting offers. And you just don't want to lose them in the building. You don't want to lose their intellectual bandwidth. You just give them a promotion.
Starting point is 00:49:15 I mean, Danny, Danny Ainge is 62. He'll get another job. But I think Brad Stevens was kind of worn out from coaching and was getting offers. And they knew he'd get hired in the NBA in a second. And Boston said, we can't lose him. Sometimes you just don't want to lose a man or a woman in the building. They're too smart. They're too thoughtful.
