So Joe Varden's a reporter, a longtime NBA guy for the athletic. He got into a little ugly skirmish yesterday with Greg Popovich. Here is the sound of Greg Popovich being unhappy with our guest in about a minute. You know, you asked the same sort of question, the same family of question last time,

where you assume things that are not true. When you just mentioned, you know, blowing these teams out, that's never happened. so I don't know where you get that. Can I finish? Can I finish? Are you going to let me finish my statement or not? So you'll be quiet now while I talk. And then I'll listen to you.

When you make statements about in the past just blowing out these other teams, number one, you give no respect to the other teams. And I talked to you last time about the same thing. So let's bring in Joe Varden, who was part of that little verbal disagreement from the athletic. So he is saying basically we don't blow these teams out,

and your argument is, well, sometimes we do. So kind of give me some clarity here on the moment yesterday and what you guys were arguing about. Okay, so first of all, the question was not to coach. The question was to Damien Willard, and it was essentially, look, you used to be sitting at home watching your colleagues play these games. I'm thinking about in 2014 when he was cut,

And then again in 2016, and he was watching this team win by an average of 29 points, 30 points, 32 points. And all this is in the Team USA game notes. And Damien answered the question. He said, yeah, it is different. It is different having watched that, watch the blowouts, and to now be a part of it on the other side where they've lost two in a row. He did mention, you know, I've also seen Team USA challenged before, but maybe never having lost, you know, two. straight. And then Greg, he interjected on his own, and he was thinking back to the first question that I asked him, asked him after they lost to Nigeria, which was, from a point spread perspective,

anyway, arguably the largest upset in international basketball history. And I basically asked, I said this is from an American exceptionalism in basketball standpoint, but, you know, you guys lost again, and what does this mean? Does this mean your message? aren't getting through that sort of thing. So he had still had that on his mind, I think, and he came trying to, you know, refer back to that, like even though I had not asked him any question. And what you can't hear on the sound is when I start to interrupt,

when he starts to say this isn't true, we don't blow teams out, well, it's in the game notes again. In 2014, 2016, 2012, huge margins of victory. Yes. And then in the 2016 gold medal game, Colin, Team USA won by 30. So, and then you look at now today in two summers under coach, they're nine and five. And that's just, that's never been seen before since 1992 when the American started sending their pros.

So that was the context of where I was coming from. And, you know, you guys saw what happened next. Yeah, I mean, you're totally accurate. This is the reality is we all have eyes and we all have. of Googled, as you pointed out, they're in the game notes. Now, you could use a lot of excuses. First of all, the world is getting better, but they're not that much better. Is it, is it Popovich's, is the team distracted? I was saying earlier, it's a weird, Chris Broussard brought this up. We have no rim protector. Who's the leader, Katie's talented, not really a leadership guy.

Is it a lousy construction of the roster, which is really not built to be thrown together and succeed. Well, I think we're all still trying to figure this out. I mean, we thought we had the answers in 2019 when you looked at the roster and said, okay, they're sending a mostly B and C list roster and you're playing some of these other teams who have pros on it as well. Like, yeah, there's going to be a much smart, smaller margin. But this roster isn't like that. It has some top heavy stars with Kevin Durant and Damien Lillard. So to answer your question, you could say they are smaller, which was by design. You could say they have been impacted by injury again to Anthony Davis, Kauai Leonard, Kyrie Irving, James Hardin. You could say that. But again, the margin for error

has simply shrunk. And now when KD goes 10 for 30, which is what he is in these first two games, they can't survive that. Or when Damien Willard, who's as fine of an offensive player as there is in the world gets beat, you know, time and again by Patty Mills or by Gabe Vincent the other night against Nigeria. They can't, they can't survive that. And, you know, they're going to have to figure out a way to team rebound. They're going to have to play better defensively. They were shredded all night in the second half last night and they're switching defense. And, you know, sort of the company line last night was, well, we're not in shape. So, you know, team Australia and In Nigeria, they have pros too, and those guys seem to be in shape.

So I don't know how that explains things, but the guys did look tired. So we'll see if they get their legs and they start to be able to execute. But I think what's clear is these games are going to be close, and Team USA could win a gold, and it would be really exciting. But we've never used the word could, really, certainly not in many, many years when it comes to this team. And now I think we have to. Tomorrow game for NBA finals, Bucks and the Sons. You know, I was saying this earlier.

I don't know if our graphics guys can get it up. But Phoenix is younger, more slender, athletic. They like up-tempo. It's not a big team outside of Jay Crowder. You know, if this was a tug-of-war, it would be, you know, we're showing that Chris Paulways, 175, Cameron Payne, 180, Devin Booker 200. McHale Bridge is a forward 209. DeAndre Aiton's a fairly slender center.

If you go to the Milwaukee Bucks roster, it is an older, bigger, more physical group of men where you got Bobby Portis 250 and Janice and Brooke Lopez and even your guards Drew Holiday are compact and physical. And it looks like to me when I've watched the games, it's going to be up to coaches and tempo. If it's a faster series, uptempo, I like Phoenix. If you want to just bang around in this series, if it was. a tug of war, it would last about 10 seconds. So I don't think anybody, no reasonable person

thought there would be a sweet, but do you believe that Milwaukee has discovered a new way to play and it will make the difference in the series? Well, no, I don't think they've discovered a new way to play. I think they were able to dictate the pace, like you said, on Sunday. And Janus has been awesome. He's playing maybe as well as, well as he's ever played and this is certainly the time to do it so that's great um but you know for one night in milwaukee devon booker was no good uh brooke lopez was able to stay on the floor and when he's able to do that that really helps the bucks but there's lots of times in the playoffs when that doesn't happen and the sons have been able to exploit him earlier on in the series so you know

i think that's where we are right now if um devon booker can play the way he has played for most of these playoffs, then this becomes a harder series. If they can get Brooke Lopez away from the rim and kind of, you know, catch him in some of the switches, that helps. That helps get him off the floor. But if they're not able to do that and Janus is controlling the tempo and the pace sort of the way that Kauai did in the 2019 finals and 2019 actually conference finals against the Bucks, you know, then this is a series that Milwaukee certainly can come back and wins. So, you know, I'm really fascinated like you are to see what happens tomorrow night with Devin. I think it all starts there.

But finally, Ben Simmons, Choms Tarania breaks the story. The Athletic is now saying basically Philadelphia is engaging team in talks. We kind of knew this. I mean, Darryl Morey's never been shy to make moves. Simmons and MB don't work. Golden State to me, Joe, there's something there. They got two lottery picks. Andrew Wiggins, a contract that works.

James Wiseman appears to be a weird fit, but he's. super talented. It just looks like the pieces. I think Simmons would solve some of their size issues. He can also be like a point center. I mean, the way he plays. I don't know. Philadelphia Golden State feels right to me.

Am I missing something? Well, I'm thinking more about Portland as an interesting fit because they don't really have a Ben. If you think about Ben Simmons and his, you know, his clutch. sports colleague, Draymond Green, their games are somewhat similar. Now, yes, yes,

of course. Ben Simmons is the better offensive player, certainly with the ball in his hands. He's younger, more dynamic, going to the rim.

There's no doubt about that. But when you talk about being limited as a shooter and, you know, basically be someone who you want to be shooting the ball from beyond the arc if you're an opponent,

and someone who can be a distributor, then, you know, I mean, having two of those guys in the floor at the same time, I'm not entirely sure. I think that he would be much more interesting to maybe partner with some of what they have going on in Portland. You know, but I mean, listen, when you think about Golden State and their system and how good Steve Kerr is, you can almost plug in anybody there and it would be exciting. I mean, I wish that the lamello ball, for lamello's sake, would have gone to the Warriors to see how they could have unlocked him.

And he obviously was great anyway. So the Warriors would be fine, but I just, for me, Portland would be a little bit more interesting. Well, Portland needs to take a big swing and so to the Sixers. He's spending a couple of weeks covering that Team USA in Vegas where it is a comfortable 113 degrees. My kids are in Vegas right now. It's 113 degrees. It's not even. They are essentially removing any, they're, they're,

they're not comfortable with the Warriors because it's too close they aligns with Native American themes and they're trying to get away from that. And so they're trying to be very inclusive on how they land on a new team nickname. They retired the name and the logo last summer and they haven't settled on a new one. But there will be a permanent one in place for the 2022 season. It's going to continue as the Washington football team this season. Guys, Washington football team is a great name. Yeah. You got it.

Like, you got the colors. You got the name. It almost feels. We're all used to saying it now. It's almost European. I love it. So do I. I like the W.

So do I. I think everybody else does too. I mean, it was a perfect transition away from the old logo and name. Like, let's go. You got it. There's nothing else to talk about. No, I. And it's completely unique for American sports names.

Yeah. If you look at the MLS. you know, they have these like L-A-F-C, the L-A-F football club. Right. And the L-A-FC has these great, the great merchandise, great hats. Yes, outside of MLS. It's called L-A-FC. Like, this is common all through the world, Washington football team.

And by the way, as you said, the W is great. The colors are great. I don't get it. Because, like, I was looking at this yesterday. The news was starting to come out. And I like to read fans or, reactions sometimes, like, see what the pulse is. Right.

Everyone's like, I don't understand. We got the name. Like, we all like the name. We all agree. This is the name. So that's me and Colin suggestion, Washington. And once Seattle's hockey team took the Krakken, that was the last great nickname taken in America.

So good. It's the best nickname. I mean, it's amazing. Remember that promo video? Yeah. It was insane. It was awesome. I mean, it's the, like, that is the greatest nickname.

I thought we were out of nicknames. And then the, Cracken came and I'm like, that is phenomenal. It's perfect. It's so perfect. If you haven't seen it that, well, I don't know if you can do. It's probably not pinned on their Twitter page. Yeah.

YouTube, the Cracken's promotional video. There you go. It's insane. That's where you need to look for it. Makes me want to go watch hockey. It was great. So John Wall apparently wants out of Houston. It seems he might have his eyes set on the Clippers.

He recently liked a tweet from MSN sports discussing a potential trade with him going to LA. Now, I'm usually hesitant about this being like the, a message because I, I don't like any tweets. I don't like tweets. What do you mean? Like I don't hit the like button on tweets. Is that the heart button? Yeah. You don't do that? I don't because what if I changed my mind. You know what I mean? So that, so I retweet stuff and occasionally quote tweet stuff. I don't, I, I don't think. But like that to me is like, uh... What, what are, why are people doing that?

To store it? Some people store it. Yeah. To store stuff. Some people store it that way. Yeah. I just, I just don't like tweets. So I, so if I, if you ever see a tweet like to me, it's a total accident.

It's just in my big dumb thumb. Yeah, I've done that before. Yeah. So I don't know. Like, did he, was he just like reading this and hit like, you know? Because the reason why. Well, they need a point guard. The reason why is because you can just hit like and it's an accident.

If you retweet, it prompts you. So then you have to hit another step to retweet it. I think the Clippers would, actually, I've never been a huge fan of Wall's game, but at this point he plays slower. He used to play too fast. He's not a great shooter, but he is a point guard, and the Clippers need a point guard. I don't actually think it's a bad fit. He averaged 20.6.6.9 assists in 32 minutes of 40 games this season.

So, I mean, it was... He's talented. That's never been the issue with John. No, he's just some injury issues. Yeah. Yeah, some consistency issues. But the proposed trade would send Marcus Morris, Patrick Beverly, Rondo, and Luke Kounard to Houston for John Wall and Houston's 2023 first round pick via the bucks. I'd do that if I was the Clippers. I think I'd do that.

Interesting trade. Yeah. And I've never been a huge John Wall guy, but it's like they need a point guard. He's been around the league. I think John's to a point where he's made a lot of money. Yeah. And he's probably wants to win games. Yeah, get with the contender.

Yeah. So the MLB All-Star game is tonight. at 7 Eastern on Fox and Los Angeles Angels All-Star. Shohay Otani will start at pitcher and bat leadoff tonight for the AL. He's the only player

who will pitch and hit in the game. And Tampa Bay manager, Kevin Cash, who is the AL team manager, said he knew this is what the fans wanted to see. He was... Look how fast. If you watched in fast motion, his bat speed, boom. God, look at that. Yeah. He has a beautiful

swing. He's just fun to watch. He's just one of those players that has that extra electricity to him. And he's just even in the, even in the home run derby yesterday. Like, he just plays, he has kind of a, he has a Zion quality to him where like he's a physically like. Well, he's also a very joyful player. That's what, yes. He's a physical player. And he, and he's, he plays with just like this natural happiness. He loves the game. Zion loves basketball. Shohei loves baseball. It's very contagious. It's very contagious. So looking forward to that tonight.

He did losing the first round in the home run derby. He's the first pitcher to ever compete in the home run derby. And it's already the first baseball player in history to combine for at least 20 home runs and 80 strikeouts in the same season. Wow. Not even Babe Ruth did that. No. What is your new slogan? Better than Babe.

He got his nickname because he is the third CP in his family, has a house next door to LeBron. All right. Hold on. So he used to live in Los Angeles. So I do think it's possible he has a house by LeBron in Los Angeles. He probably kept his house because I know he loved living in L.A. I don't think there's, he probably is an excellent Boulder. I don't believe he got his

nickname because he's the third CP in his family. That's a lie. Nope. He does not have a house next to LeBron. His dad and older brother also have the initials CP. That is where CP3 comes from. Devin Booker didn't start a single game, his one season at Kentucky. Part owns a restaurant in Phoenix called Books, Cooks, has B Legendary tattooed on his arm. I don't know. Owns a restaurant called Books, cooks, feels like a weak attempt by our staff to be clever. That's a lie. That is the lie. Kobe signed his shoes with the phrase be legendary, and that's why he has a tattooed on his arm. DeAndre Aiton, the first number one pick in Sun's history. What, so he's, he's...

Nickname is the dominator. The dominator. Has never eaten McDonald's. Do you know I've never eaten at Arby's? So I think it's very possible, because there's so much fast food in the country, it's very possible you would need one of the places. I've never eaten at Arby's. I think of that. Yeah.

I haven't eaten at Arby's in probably 15 years. It's good, though. Oh, hold on. I'm going to say that one seems so random that I'm. I think that's true, has never eaten at McDonald's. I mean, but it's McDonald's. That is a lie. You think, okay, oh, that is the lie?

I don't have the conclusion to the story. How do they hide that? Not easily. It's like a state. Yeah, if you've never been to Disney World, it is, I've taken my kids there probably four or five times.

It is hard to get your arms around the size and magnitude of the property. I've never been there with children. I only go on girls trips and go to Epcot. Disneyland is tiny, negotiable. You're in and out in a day. It's a very different experience. It's a small, I mean, it's almost. weird. When you're in Southern California, you can drive past, you know, Disneyland's by the stadium,

the baseball stadium. And when you get there, you're kind of shocked how small it is. If you've been to the one in Orlando. Oh, no. But I remember the first time, because I went to Disneyland, I think, before Disney World. And Disneyland is, you know, at the time, it's like the greatest amusement park I'd ever been to. And then you go to Disney World and you're like, I mean, Disney World has a water park feature that is just... Yeah, then they have like the zoo thing. And like they've got like, it's too much. You've just been like an entire week there to like see everything.

I just go to Epcot. All right. Tonight on Fox, we have the baseball all-star game. Shohei Otani will be pitching and he'll be batting. And I, I have... You know what? I will say this about baseball. we have had an emergence in the last four or five years of a lot of young stars and baseball's

lightning up. You say this for the commissioner. He has strongly been pushing for Let the Kids Play was a marketing campaign a couple years ago. And Fernando Tatis is a Let the Guys Play, Play guy. I mean, he is going to fling a bat and stare it down. I love it. Yeah, we should.
