Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Yep, that's me, Clivert Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:04 And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 is big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild. I mean, it was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days I'd put on 10 pounds, I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Ah, here we go, live in Los Angeles. Hour number three, it's the herd. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, FS1. I was just talking during the break with Alex Curry. She's in for Joy Taylor, who's in Italy all week. Great pictures all over her IG and stuff. The Olympic ratings are terrible.
Starting point is 00:02:56 They're just awful. and it's not because we don't like American, we're not patriotic. But there's a good rule out here for any business person. The harder you make it for me to access your product, I give up. I always thought that if you want me to buy a T-shirt from your company, it can't be more than two clicks. One click, and then a second, by the time it's a third, you're a headache. You're a pain in my butt.
Starting point is 00:03:23 And NBC's made it too hard. I've got to sign up for Peacock. there's a reason this show is on radio, television, I heart streaming, I have a podcast, my own podcast network, I'm Facebook, I'm on Twitter, I'm on Instagram, why? I want to be everywhere you are. And then you'll decide, I just want to be every little place you are, every little rest area, every little bus stop you're at, and then you'll decide if you like me or not. But I'm not going to make it hard to find me.
Starting point is 00:03:55 NBC's making it hard for I have to sign up for this to get that. If you're asking me to sign up for another channel, I'm out. There is one team and one sport that's been easy to watch live because it's kind of the right timing for us, and that's beach volleyball. And we have the A team, Alex Kleinman, April Ross. They're playing today at Five Pacific. I've watched them live every time,
Starting point is 00:04:18 and they are absolutely crushing it. So make sure you support them today. But otherwise, it's hard to watch anything live. You have to watch the rerun at, prime time the next day. And the other thing is, and I've said this now for at Fox, we have the World Cup, and I said it at the other place. The World Cup has surpassed the Olympics. And I have a theory. Can I give you my little theory on this? So 30 years ago, cable TV sports exploded about 30 years ago, late 80s, early night, it exploded. Everything's on TV now. If you Google what's on sports TV today,
Starting point is 00:04:52 there's like 40 games every Saturday. When I first got to ESPN 15 years ago, they were doing 60 college games a year. Now they do 500. So you used to watch the Olympics. When I was a kid, high school, and college, the Olympics were unique. It was the only three weeks. As a sports fan, sports was on television all day for three weeks.
Starting point is 00:05:12 Literally, I got up to I went to bed. It was totally unique. I didn't give a rip about the World Cup. America wasn't good at soccer. I didn't care about the World Cup. 30 years ago, the Olympics were a unique experience. As a sports fan, you got sports all day on television. My mom would watch because of the pageantry.
Starting point is 00:05:28 My sister would watch. I didn't have to fight for the remote. And then cable sports exploded. Now, every night I can watch anything I want. So the uniqueness of, hey, sports is on TV, day and night for three. It's on day and night on that. So you've lost that. You've lost the spec.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Meanwhile, as America, women dominate the World Cup is this country. You can see the MLS, the growth of the academies, the growth of the fans, the The television ratings for that Mexico-USA match were fantastic. So as soccer is grown in popularity and generations now, kids are playing it, they're buying it. I mean, I'm a season ticket holder to LAFC. It's the only sports season ticket I own in Los Angeles. The environment's great. And when I give my tickets away occasionally, people are lined up.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Everybody wants them. All the young kids. All the people in my fan. So the point is, the World Cup now has surpassed the Olympics. the unique quality of the Olympics, hey, three weeks of television non-stop. I don't watch curling. I don't watch those sports. Soccer, that three-week tournament, I'm more into soccer.
Starting point is 00:06:38 And I'm not saying that because Fox has the World Cup. That's not why I'm saying it. I said it at the other place. There was a line in the sand about 15 to 20 years ago where I cared more about the World Cup than the Olympics. because the Olympics weren't bringing me in because I cared about curling. I never cared about the sports outside of basketball and boxing. I never cared about them. I don't watch swimming all year, but it was a unique television experience,
Starting point is 00:07:04 and it no longer is. Whereas the World Cup isn't a unique TV experience, but I'm more into soccer because it's more ingrained. The networks all now run it. I mean, you can watch English Premier League games on networks, MLS I watch all the time. You've got German League, Spanish League, just infiltrated all Americans.
Starting point is 00:07:21 domestic television. So that's my theory on it. You know, nothing against this. This is not a shot at NBC. But I'm just telling you how I feel is that I have watched very little of the Olympics. I watch some swimming. I know a sports writer whose daughter was in it, so I thought I got to watch that. A little Simone Biles.
Starting point is 00:07:38 You know, I watched, you know, I want to watch the dream team. Yeah. But let's go back to the first topic, which is if you make it hard for me to watch something, you get me to a third click. And I got to sign up for some streaming service. I'm out. I'm not watching it. There's my rant.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win.
Starting point is 00:08:33 A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
Starting point is 00:08:53 This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast. It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream,
Starting point is 00:09:22 this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:09:43 What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:10:01 To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have eggs on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:10:24 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're
Starting point is 00:10:51 in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses.
Starting point is 00:11:07 Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:11:21 Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app. Search, learn the hard way, and listen now. Well, I've learned more football from Jimmy Johnson than any person I've ever worked for. He's a hall of famer, long overdue, a two-time Super Bowl champ, a college football champ. only nine years as a coach, Jimmy had a life and had other things to do.
Starting point is 00:11:48 And for the last 10 minutes, we've been talking about crabbing and eating shrimp and his life in the Florida Keys. And I just love him to death. And he's been kind enough through the years to come on a few times a year. And this weekend, he gets inducted into the Hall of Fame Saturday. And my friend Jimmy Johnson now joins us live. So it was probably the most emotional moment since I've been at Fox. When you got inducted in, I'm going to get emotional talking about it.
Starting point is 00:12:11 I don't want to make this too emotional because we're, both just regular guys that like a beer. But it does, this moment, just think about Troy Aikman getting really emotional. And when you were told you were in, what was the first thing on that Fox set? The first moment, what did you think about? Well, Bill Richards, our producer, had told me I was going to be speaking at halftime with a video about the Seattle defense and the Green Bay offense. It was a playoff game.
Starting point is 00:12:43 So I was getting ready for that video. So, you know, when he walked out there, my mind was on the game. We had 35 million people watching. And so it was such a shock to me. I stopped breathing. Then he asked me to talk. I couldn't talk. You know, and how he knew I had asthma.
Starting point is 00:13:03 So he said, hey, do you need your inhaler? I couldn't breathe. It's such a. The first word down my mouth, I said, you know, the first thought is, all the great assistant coaches and players that I had. That's what my thought was. But Bradshaw was going crazy. All the guys were so excited.
Starting point is 00:13:24 Troy, obviously, you know, really excited. I mean, it was good to see how happy they were for me. Oh, God, we were all. It's just, even to me to watch this right now, I'm getting emotional watching it. And, you know, it's funny with Troy Aikman. Troy had a real football experience. He goes to Oklahoma. Then he transfers to UCLA.
Starting point is 00:13:42 Then he gets the hell beat out of him his first year in the NFL. And then he becomes one of the great quarterbacks I've ever seen. And I want you to go in a little bit on that, that, you know, it was tough for Troy. Those first years, as you were rebuilding the team, he didn't have much of an offensive line. He didn't have a lot of weapons. And was there ever a moment with Troy that you thought, you know, if I don't get him help, he's not going to last in this league. He's going to get beat up.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Well, no, I knew that day. I especially knew it when we played Philadelphia. They sacked him nine times. And so I knew I had to get him some help. But, you know, it was tough between Troy and I, because besides Troy, I drafted Steve Walsh, who had led my Miami team to an undefeated national championship. But I knew I was going to trade Steve Walsh, but I couldn't just come out and anoint Troy as my guy because that was going to hurt Steve's trade value.
Starting point is 00:14:37 And so I had to kind of walk the fence between the two of them. That caused a little bit of tension between Troy and I. And then, you know, obviously I traded Steve for a one, two, and a three to the Saints. And after that, I bonded with Troy. And we built up a great relationship after that. But I knew I had to give him some help. But, you know, their team, Tom Larry, one of the greatest coaches of all the time. He had three straight losing seasons.
Starting point is 00:14:59 And they were three and 13 when we took them over. So, you know, we had to rebuild that offensive line. We had to rebuild the whole team. You got a first, second, and a third for Steve Walsh. You bet. I got a three going to a two for Steve Pallure, who was our starting quarterback, or at least was Tom Landry's starting quarterback.
Starting point is 00:15:21 And as soon as I got there, I traded away our starting quarterback, because I knew he wasn't good enough to win for us. Yeah. And so, and I knew I was going to take Troy on top of that. Yeah. So, you know, it's interesting. I saw a couple days ago that Dak,
Starting point is 00:15:36 Cowboys were like, you know, his arms are little twinged up here. and I thought to myself, Jimmy, sometimes when you hurt your legs, you overcompensate and become more of an arm thrower. Exactly right. And I thought to myself, boy, they better just get him. I don't want him near a field. What would you do if you add DAC today? You don't have a backup plan there, really. No.
Starting point is 00:16:00 Gilbert's not a bad. He did decent last year, but you're exactly right, Colin. And as far as, you know, when I see a player have an injury, you know, it's amazing, you know, he might have an ankle injury. And the next thing you know, three weeks down the road, he's got a hip injury, you know. Right. Or like you say, he overcompensates and all of a sudden he's got a sore arm. You know, one minor injury can lead to another injury. And the other thing is the percentage of injuries, as they start having them, you know, they escalate as time goes on.
Starting point is 00:16:33 Yeah. You know, and so that's got to be a concern with that. You know, he's had a couple of injuries now, and, you know, he's out there running, running around and not taking any hits. He's going to have to take some hits, and it's going to be interesting to see if he can stay healthy because they need Dak Prescott to win the game. So I kind of joked earlier today that Kyle Shanahan came out and said, oh, Garoppolo's never looked better. John Lynch came out and said, Trey Lance is crushing it, and I thought, well, they're just trying to jack up Garapolo's trade value. I mean, it's so obvious, right? Fans should not even listen to what a coach says during training camp.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Really, it's ridiculous to listen to anything that they say. Because anything they say really is not meant for the fans. Anything they say during training camp is meant for the players. So the fans should not pay any attention to what they say during training camp. Here's the only thing I worry about. So we know that Traylant's pretty darn talented. We trust Shanahan and Lenther smart guys. But I do worry about this.
Starting point is 00:17:36 I think San Francisco is going to get off to a good start. I look at their schedule. Let's say they're 4-1-1-5-1, and Trey Lance is ready to play. And you can get a second-rounder for Garapolo. Jimmy, if you move out, there's going to be veterans who are loyal to Garapola. Would you worry about that? Not really. You're going to whoever's the best player.
Starting point is 00:17:59 And really, those veterans, they can see if Trey Lance is going to be the guy, if he is that talented and he is talented enough and experienced enough that you trust him that as coaches you know he's going to win the game those veterans see that
Starting point is 00:18:17 you know and they know and you know those veterans they always have the feeling grass is greener too even though they might have a relationship with Garapolo you know they may look at and say hey this guy can take us through the promised land.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Right. And so you know they might be optimistic just like a fan's optimistic. Yesterday, you know, I've had some players on about this Aaron Rogers situation, and it's a fine line. Like, listen, if I was Belichick with Brady, I'd say, Tom, what do you make of this? You know, we're thinking about getting rid of your slot receiver. I want to communicate with him.
Starting point is 00:18:53 But hell, he's not a GM. I'm not asking my players who to draft. Aaron Rogers, boy, that's tricky, isn't it, Jimmy? No, I don't think it's tricky at all. In fact, at our seminar, John Zorneski and I got in an argument about this or a discussion. Okay. He said, Jimmy, he said, you would never listen to one of your players about who to draft or who to hire. I said, well, wait a minute now.
Starting point is 00:19:17 I said, Aaron Rogers is smarter and been there longer than most of those scouts. Why wouldn't you listen to him? He knows those players. He knows talent. He knows what they need. And I said, in fact, I said, if my. memory serves me right. I said, John, come on over with me. Let's talk to Troy. I said, Troy, it was your fourth, you know, your third year. I said, did I talk to you about hiring
Starting point is 00:19:43 Norv Turner? He said, coach, don't you remember? You brought Norv in and let me visit with him before you made a decision whether or not to hire him or not. So I trusted my players, especially my quarterback, that's smart, you know, as far as some decision making on not only the roster, but also on hiring coaches. Finally, there was a moment a couple weeks ago I was very happy about where Jerry Jones acknowledged, I screwed it up. I screwed it up. Now, now.
Starting point is 00:20:13 I don't think he's, that's not the words he used. No, Jimmy, those aren't the words he used, but I can't use them. I don't want to get Fox in trouble. But he did screwed up. I know it. You don't even have to say it. How did it land for you? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:28 You know, they asked me about that. after he said, and I said, listen, when there's a breakup like that, you know, when there's a split, there's two people involved. And so Jerry should not take the entire blame for that. I was ready to move on. I was ready to move to South Florida. Now, you know, could we have done something to make it work, you know, maybe? But, you know, it really wasn't all Jerry's fault.
Starting point is 00:20:56 And he shouldn't take the entire blame for that. Yeah. Would you have a beer with him tomorrow if he said, hey, Jimmy, let's go have a beer. Oh, we will have a beer. I mean, you know what's crazy. He's got this real expensive yacht. Yes. And my son Brent and his wife, Belinda, they were in France on a vacation. And they were walking down there in Cannes. And they looked out there and they said, hey, there's Jerry Jones's yacht. And Brent called Rich Darrymple, five minutes later, Jerry called, he was all excited.
Starting point is 00:21:31 He said, hey, there'll be a dingy to pick you up at the dock. They went on his 357 foot yacht, you know, and they had hors durs and drinks and the whole bit. So Jerry was all excited that Brent and Belinda went on the yacht. You know, Jerry and I, without question, you know, we'll have us a cold beer here if not tomorrow, for sure, you know, day after tomorrow. 357 foot yacht. 250 million, Colin, that's more than you and I got.
Starting point is 00:21:59 together. Great seeing you. Have a great weekend. Hey, we got football on Fox tomorrow night, 7 o'clock, pregame show. Yep. Speaking of cold beers, I'll have one open. Good seeing you, coach.
Starting point is 00:22:14 All right, Colin. All right, be good. That's a big, 357 feet. I've seen a 94-foot yacht in a, in like a marina. Way bigger than everything. Triple it. and add another half yacht. They're different in Europe.
Starting point is 00:22:34 How big is that? Like France, Abiza, you're seeing these giant incredible yachts. I have seen, in fact, two weekends ago, I went with my wife up to Santa Barbara, and there was a yacht, and it was about a 95-footer. That's the second time I've seen it, and it was so much bigger than everything else. The idea of three and a half times that, that's, I would just love to see it. I just want to see Jerry Jones yacht. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:00 He can invite me on if you want, but I just want to see it. Hey, Jersey Mike's Wednesday. They have a new grilled portabella mushroom and Swiss sub. Try it. Fresh ingredients, make a sub above. Jersey mics be a sub above. Alex with the news. No, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. So we started this hour with your Olympic rant, and the U.S. Women's Basketball team is one step closer to Olympic gold. Team USA defeated Australia, 79 to 55, to advance to the semifinal round in to toe. Tokyo. Brianna Stewart led the way scoring 23 points with 20 of them coming in the first half to get the U.S. out to a huge lead. The team's Olympic winning streak has now been extended to 53 games. And a lot of routes. They play really... A lot of routes. You know, you know what you get. You get a lot of experienced ladies for the U.S. Yes. Without some of the egos. And so, you know, with the men's team, it's a lot of, you know, get this guy shots, that guy shots. When you can get all this experience and talent, without a lot of the egos, their chemistry is fantastic.
Starting point is 00:24:05 They've won six straight Olympic gold medals. Most routes, I mean, rolling people. That's incredible. Now, they will face Serbia in the semifinal on Friday. So find it. Watch it. Colin, find it. Moving on, the Giants first padded practice Tuesday ended abruptly after a fight broke out on the field.
Starting point is 00:24:24 It started when tied in Evan Ingram retaliated against Jibril Peppers after a late hit to running back, Corey Clement. Now, Logan Ryan jumped in to help his defensive teammate before the rest of the squad got involved. Quarterback, Daniel Jones even found himself on the bottom of the pile. Head coach, Joe Judge, was very angry with his team and was heard yelling plenty of things to his players. He also made them run sprints and do push-ups,
Starting point is 00:24:50 then more sprints and more push-ups as a punishment for their actions. Now, you don't want fights. You don't want fights. You want passion. You want feisty. don't want fights. That's tough, especially on the first day of padded practice. First day of padded practice.
Starting point is 00:25:06 And then your quarterback's at the bottom of the pile. That is so dangerous. I would do anything for video of this. Now, you know what happened, by the way? Somebody's got video and the giants have either confiscated it or if anybody can find video of that. Send it to Colin. That is crazy.
Starting point is 00:25:25 That sounds like a brawl. Yeah. That is a brawl. All right, moving on, Ben Rothusberger is back with the Steelers on a one-year deal for the 2021 season. He also took a pay cut and restricted his contract to help the team with the salary cap. And even though he's entering his 18th season, the Steelers aren't closing the door on him. Playing even longer owner and president, Art Rooney said it's not written in stone that this is his last year. Now, he's clearly at the end of his career.
Starting point is 00:25:53 But I feel like this is something you kind of have to say since he's been the face of your franchise for almost two decades. It's also not ideal. He's got some really good young receivers, but this is the weakest O-line Pittsburgh's had. I don't have a ranking of their offensive lines, but it got picked by some teams. Chargers picked a guy, and I don't like their O-line. And so I think once again, you're not going to have a ton of running game. Therefore, you're going to ask Big Ben to throw 45 to 55 times a game. No veteran quarterback should be throwing it over 35.
Starting point is 00:26:28 That's, by the way, remember when Brady got to Tampa, they had Ronald Jones and they went out and got Lenny Fernette. They're like, we got to get another running back. They got a right tackle. They got Leonard Fernette. You don't want to be quarterback reliant, even as good as Brady is. You can't ask Brady to throw 50 times a game. That's not what he's built to do. He can be great within the framework of what he does now at 44 years old.

Starting point is 00:29:56 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
Starting point is 00:30:18 To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed. That's correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Then you're finishing that sentence. Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:38 I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it
Starting point is 00:31:18 and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:31:34 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. During the break before the interview, we just talked about crab fishing, and he's got a place down in the Keys where it's the best shrimp in the world down there. And I grew up on the coast of Washington, which is all salmon and crab and oysters. I shucked oysters for a year as a kid. That's the worst job in the world I've ever had.
Starting point is 00:32:23 That is hard, right? It's like labor. Brutal. And then I was a deck hand on a boat. You know, state park, small town, whatever, living. But it's funny because I grew up in just the best salmon and crab. You could, everybody in my town was like a crab fisherman or a salmon fisherman. So when I was a kid, swear to God, I could get a shovel and I could go down to the beach.
Starting point is 00:32:44 I did this more than once and dig a limit of clams. You get like 15. That was the state limit. And then I'd bring them up and mom would wash them up. cut him up and make him for dinner. And he literally, Jimmy literally goes out fishes and comes home and he's got lunch and dinner. That's a good life in America. Oh, that's a great life. Live on the coast. He's living the life. He is. All right. We're going to call it up, down and sideways. The herd brought to you by Jersey Mike Subs, be a sub above. You give me the team and I'll say
Starting point is 00:33:11 with free agency, are they better, the same or worse. All right. You ready? Are the 76ers trending up, down or sideways? Well, it's incomplete, but I'd say down. They brought in Andre Drummond. So can Andre Drummond play with Joel Embed? My question is this. Andre Drummond has the same issue that Simmons had. He's a terrible free throw shooter, like 47%. So, you know, and by the way, Drummond and Embed had a rivalry. At one point, Embedde called him a bum on the last couple years. So I, now, now it's incomplete. They trade Ben Simmons. In a week from now, it could be different. Are the bucks trending up down or sideways? Sideways. They're the champs. I mean, they kept Bobby Portis, who did some really nice things in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:33:56 They lost PJ Tucker and Bryn Forbes, but George Hill arrived. George can hit three-pointers. Veteran smart guy. He'd been in a lot of big games. Rodney Hood, a little bit inconsistent, injured a bunch. I feel like you lose a little toughness with PJ Tucker. But I thought Bobby Portis, his youth, his size, the same team, very good team. Are the Bulls trending up down or sideways? Massive up, especially in the east. I thought they totally redid their roster. Lonzo Ball is getting better. He's only 23. Caruso had the highest defensive rating for any Laker last year, and he can hit a three.
Starting point is 00:34:31 DeRosen last eight years, 20 points a game. And remember, in March, they went out and got Nicola Vucevic, who gives you 22 a game. He's a legit big. This is going to be a very athletic team, legitimate, modern big. A lot of guys that can shoot threes, improving play. players. I like them a lot. It's going to be fun to watch. Are the heat trending up down or sideways? Like the Bulls, massive improvement. People forget this too.
Starting point is 00:34:59 Victorola Depot got hurt last year. He's been an Eastern Conference All-Star. He returns. So, and when you bring in Kyle Lowry, that allows Jimmy Butler to play off the ball. What happened to Jimmy Butler last year? He got tired by the end of the year. So Kyle Lowry not only runs the point, but he allows Butler to play fewer minutes and off the ball. It's not as an exhausting experience. They get the toughness of PJ Tucker, the experience of Marquief Morris. Kendrick Nunn is
Starting point is 00:35:29 inconsistent player, not much of a lot. I think the bulls and the heat are now fringe Eastern Conference contenders. So are the Lakers trending up down or sideways? Well, you know, I don't like all the moves. I would say sideways, though,
Starting point is 00:35:47 because I do think Westbrook supplements them in the regular season. But first of all, just look at all the moves. So the chemistry, so many people out. Kyle Kuzma and Dennis Schrooter can play. I know nobody wants to admit this. So I thought they got older. I thought they got worse defensively.
Starting point is 00:36:04 They got a couple guys who can hit threes, but you're not. Malik Monk's not getting major minutes in the playoffs. I'm sorry, he's not. So it's totally dependent. The reason I give him a sideways and not a down is it's totally dependent on LeBron and AD. And because they both get a really long offseason, I think they'll both have really strong seasons. Are the Knicks trending up down or sideways?
Starting point is 00:36:28 Sideways. First of all, Kimball Walker, knees. He played the fewest games he's ever played. Struggled to play back-to-backs last year. And Evan Fournier is a nice player, but you paid a fortune for him. I look at the Knicks who averaged 97 points a game in the playoffs, which was easily the lowest. They needed major juice.
Starting point is 00:36:50 This is not major juice. It makes them a better version of themselves. But as the bucks will be good, the Nets should be better. The heat are better. Chicago's better. That doesn't mean you win a playoffs here. Atlanta should be better. So I think the East has a lot of teams that got better.
Starting point is 00:37:10 I think the NICs will be a better version of themselves, but they were one and done and got exposed very quickly in the playoffs. Okay. So are the Nets trending up down or sideways? I would say slightly up. Patty Mills can shoot threes, more of what they do. But, you know, Patty Mills is a nice addition. And again, the reason I think they're up is because I don't think Kevin Durant will miss as many games.
Starting point is 00:37:35 And I don't think James Hardin will come into the season completely out of shape. Hardin before this year had never been a guy that was inactive. He always plays. So last year was weird. Hardin tries to play himself into shape and a condensed season gets hurt. That's not going to happen again. Kevin Durant, condensed season. More game, shorter time.
Starting point is 00:37:54 Kyrie Irving, I don't think, is going to be there in a couple of years. But I think Brooklyn is slightly better. And by the way, they re-sign Blake Griffin, and that helps. He played well in spots. He did. Are the pelicans trending up down or sideways? A lot of people are crushing the pelicans because they lost Lonzo ball. But remember, Zion's getting better.
Starting point is 00:38:14 And what they basically did is, we're going to give the ball to Zion, and he's going to run point or have the bonus sense. I think that makes them a better team. They added Devante Graham with a Hornets, a decent three-point shooter. But to me, as Lonzo gets better, I can't downgrade them. As Zion gets better, I can't downgrade them because they lose Lonzo,
Starting point is 00:38:38 because Lonzo was probably taking touches from Zion who should really control this offense. So it's a sideways, but I don't, I think they're a borderline, playoff team and I thought that's exactly what they were last year. Are the suns trending up down or sideways? And I say this is a compliment, sideways. They didn't get worse. They added Javail McGee, which is a body.
Starting point is 00:39:05 They're small. They needed a body. You know, I say sideways. They're probably they're probably sideways to slightly better because they added size. Landry Shamit's a nice little player. Chris Paul those a year older Devin Booker and DeAndre
Starting point is 00:39:25 You know what? If I had to redo that, we can't do it live. I would say slightly up, not sideways. Yeah. I'm with you on that. It's not a bang. I mean, you won the West. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:38 So there you go. Good stuff today. Great stuff today. You know, it's funny. Sometimes you lose listeners because you have to be honest. You know, it's like you lose relationships. If you had a friend and you said to a friend, I don't like the way you treat people. I just can't hang out anymore.
Starting point is 00:39:56 You'd lose a friend, but you'd feel good about it. And by the way, I lost some Laker fans today because I think they're an antique store full of old dudes and low-ceiling young dudes. And you know what? I feel good about it. I'm right. We have – okay, so I've got to show you this. So Jimmy Johnson was on the show, and he talked about Jerry Jones and his yacht.
Starting point is 00:40:20 Oh. So it's a 357 foot yacht. Oh my goodness. Now, what's interesting about this, the picture, I'm sorry to the radio audience, is not in a marina. So you can't compare, it's just in the ocean. Whoa. Now just think about this.
Starting point is 00:40:37 The average yacht, when you show the biggest pictures, the full length of it, the average yacht is not half that big. Because the average yacht, I mean, look at, now that's, okay, there's a picture. That's next to other yachts. So it's 40 to 60% bigger than other yachts. What do you have on that yacht? Well, first of all, you probably have a 20-person crew. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:02 If I had a yacht that big, I'd have a, I'll tell you what I've had, I'd have a helicopter pad. There's one on there. Yeah, because if I had to get off it fast, I'd have a major helicopter pad. I would have a 20-person crew. I would have sleeping quarters. So you'd want to be able to throw, like if you. Fence. Yeah, not just a party, events.
Starting point is 00:41:22 Yeah. So I love that aerial shot next to other 175-foot yachts. That's a mansion on the sea. So it's weird. In my hometown, this is bizarre. So I grew up on a very small town in the coast of Washington. Not a lot of money. The biggest employer, there were two, ocean spray, because I grew up around cranberry
Starting point is 00:41:44 bogs, ocean spray cranberry, and yacht building. So in Little Westport, Washington, they built yachts. And so at one point, they built John Wayne, the actor a yacht. I think Johnny Carson at one point. So I've seen yachts. I've never been on one, but I've seen them. It's a lifestyle. Look at that thing.
Starting point is 00:42:06 Yeah, what a life. Wow, that is living. All right, I'm done. Envy. That's it. We'll see you tomorrow. Live in Los Angeles. It's the hurt.
Starting point is 00:42:20 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform?
Starting point is 00:42:40 We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you. get your podcasts. On The Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me.
Starting point is 00:42:56 I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Starting point is 00:43:14 Listen to Look Back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me. Clivert Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits,
