Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was
Starting point is 00:00:48 harmed. You just understood. That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming to him. He's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. Listen to a point game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Will Ferrell's Big Money Players and IHeart Podcast presents soccer moms. So I'm Leanne. Yeah. This is my best friend, Janet.
Starting point is 00:01:11 Hey. And we have been joined at the hips since high school. Absolutely. A redacted amount of years later, we're still joined at the hip. Just a little bit bigger hips. This is a podcast. We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda Odyssey. With all the snacks and drinks.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer? hit a bogo. Well, then you got them. Listen to soccer moms on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The story I've told myself can then shape my behavior, and that can lead me to sabotage the possibility of connection. This Mental Health Awareness Month, tune into the podcast deeply well with Debbie Brown if you've been searching for a soft place to land while doing the work to become whole. This podcast is for you to hear more. Listen to deeply well with Debbie. I'm on the Black Effect Podcast Network on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the IHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. It is the Hurd. Nick Wright in. for a vacationing. Colin Cowherd, Alex Curry, alongside of course. Joy Taylor vacationing. You know, it's unbelievable, Alex.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Colin, God only knows where he is. He has, you know, homes all over the lower 48, maybe including Alaska, why, I'm not sure. Joy, I know where she is, because she can't stop humble bragging via pictures on the Amalfi Coast. I'm not, Alex, I know Joy is one of your dear friends, one of my dear friends.
Starting point is 00:03:02 I'm not even jealous of the scenery, the history. I'm just jealous of the food. Like every time she's posting these food pictures, and I have massive food envy, but you and I were stewarded the ship today. How are you doing, Alex? Oh, I'm doing fabulous. But yeah, you're right.
Starting point is 00:03:20 The best part of Italy is the food. I mean, it's an experience. It's a couple hours just to sit down, have the amazing meal, the wine. So she's doing great. I'm doing great today because I got to walk. Watch my girls, Alex Climman and April Ross, take home the gold and beach volleyball yesterday. So big congrats to them. Manhattan Beach was going off yesterday for that. That's fantastic. And by the way, while we're giving shoutouts, nobody remembers this except for me.
Starting point is 00:03:49 The very first time I ever filled in on this show five years ago, the very first guest I ever interviewed was Allison Felix. And I was a little fanboyish, I will admit, with Ms. Felix because I love track and field. She's a superstar. And Allison Felix, spoiler alert America, just a couple hours ago, got her record setting 10th Olympic medal by bronze meddling in the 400 meter dash. So congrats to your friends at the beach volleyball team. Congrats to American icon Allison Felix. There's your Olympics coverage right now. There's also an amazing modern pentathlon story if you want to Google that one.
Starting point is 00:04:30 That's happening as well. But we will get to the news of the day. In about 10 minutes, listen, I normally say don't worry about preseason unless one of your guys gets hurt. What I saw from the Cowboys last night was potentially incredibly concerning. And what I heard from Troy Aitman on the broadcast and Dak Prescott on the broadcast was maybe even more concerning. We'll do that in about 10 minutes. We got Broussard joining us in an hour. But we have to start with my pal, Charles Barkley,
Starting point is 00:05:07 joining my former mentor, Bob Costas, on Costas's new show talking about LeBron. Now, full disclosure here, again, I really, really like both of the people involved in this interview, even though I hate what you're about to hear. And full disclosure, I once upon a time at a Cleveland hotel around one in the morning, got into a very friendly but very loud argument with Charles about this very topic. So I bring with it some baggage. But Costas did exactly what he should do. He asked Charles about the NBA question that will never go away,
Starting point is 00:05:47 LeBron or Michael, and here is what Charles had to say. The reason I get joy on the edge, and I'm never going to say it in it, actually, in fairness, I haven't even put LeBron past Kobe. Let's get that out of the way. I want to be fair. All right. The reason I put Michael up there before those other guys, LeBron has stacked his teams.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Let's be realistic. As Kevin Durant did and others have done. Does that lessen their legacy? Yes. Russell Westbrook now on his way. It's a trade, but on his way to the Lakers. So I do. Like what Janus and Dirknovsky guys like that,
Starting point is 00:06:23 especially Janus is the perfect example, to go through the grind and to lose, which Michael did. When I was watching that documentary, I was like, damn, I forgot how bad the pissing beat him up. But going through that struggle, that's what separates sports. Like, winning all the time. Like, we all want to win. But the struggle is part of your legacy.
Starting point is 00:06:49 The struggle is part of your legacy. There's no doubt about it. The problem for Charles and folks that make that argument is they don't finish the thought. So the argument there is, oh, LeBron didn't go through the struggle. The hell do you call seven years where the best teammate you ever play with is Mo Williams, where the second best teammate you have is Zedrunas Ilgousis. The third is Larry Hughes. The fourth is maybe Ricky Davis or a year of Carlos Boozer.
Starting point is 00:07:24 And those guys didn't overlap. It's not like you had those for that monster force them together. No, that was over seven years in Cleveland, where LeBron James gave the city, basically his hometown, his organization, time and outstanding play. Brought him to the finals in year four at age 22, gave them every opportunity to build around him. And they said, how does Moe Williams, Boobie Gibson, and a 400-pound Shaquille, Neil do for you. And the answer was, it's not enough. And when Charles, Charles is such an interesting messenger on this.
Starting point is 00:08:09 And again, I know Charles, I like Charles, but I don't know why he keeps pounding his head into this rock, because his story is one of the moment there was the struggle, he bounced. And again, this isn't me being unfair, but this is. me letting the younger audience know exactly what Charles's career was. In 1983, the Philadelphia 76ers not only won the title, you could argue it was the greatest team ever. Two years later, they draft Charles Barkley, really a year and a half later, they draft Charles Berkeley.
Starting point is 00:08:49 They still have Dr. Jay, who is a league MVP, Moses Malone, who was a top five player in the League, Andrew Tony, who was one of the most historically underrated players ever, and Mo Cheeks was a Hall of Famer. That's the team Charles got drafted into. His first year there, they damn near make the finals. They make the Eastern Conference finals. And then, as a few years later, they trade Moses and Dr. Jay retires, and the team gets a little worse and a little worse and a little worse. until in 92, they missed the playoffs entirely. So what does Charles do? Bales, trade me, get me out of here.
Starting point is 00:09:31 And does he go to a team where he's going to build it up? No. Goes to Phoenix that had won 50 games four years in a row. And Charles, because he's a all-time great player, nearly got Phoenix over the top. Got him to the finals, won a league MVP, had the best year of his career, they lose in six to the Bulls.
Starting point is 00:09:52 And then over the next three years, twice, they lose to Houston in a heartbreaking seven game series. And what does Charles do? Bales! Not only Bales, says, send me to Houston. You can Google the New York Times article. He wasn't bashful about it back in 96 when it happened. So Charles was drafted into a perfect situation.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Didn't win. And as it became a bad situation, bailed. and when he says, I don't want to do the LeBron Kobe thing. But because, listen, we know if you're going to be objective, it's not only that LeBron is more finals MVP's, 4-1 regular season MVP's, it's that LeBron is better at everything than Kobe was. Ah, Nick, Kobe's a better score. Well, LeBron averages more points.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Oh, Nick, Kobe's a better shooter. Well, LeBron has a better field goal percentage from three and from two. We know he's a better passer. We know he's a better rebounder. We know he's a better defender. but set that aside. When you set just the story, the arc of Kobe, who Charles said and Charles in the bar in Cleveland three years ago
Starting point is 00:10:59 when he and I argued about this made the exact same argument. How do you have him above Kobe? Okay, well, I love Kobe. And he's obviously legendary and one of the most influential players ever. Kobe also was drafted to a team with Shaquille O'Neal. And very early in his career got Phil Jackson. That's not a struggle.
Starting point is 00:11:24 If part of the beauty is the struggle, there's not a struggle when you're drafted to be Shaq's wingman. And by the way, again, history matters. Shaq leaves. The Lakers missed the playoffs. Then they lose in round one blowing a 3-1 lead. Then they lose in round one again. and what does Kobe do
Starting point is 00:11:49 when the struggle hits him? Goes on Stephen A. Smith's radio show and says, trade me. I'm getting out of here. And that trade damn near happened till Dr. Bus came in and stopped it. Then the Lakers get Pau Gasol. Not so much of a struggle anymore. And Kobe finishes his whole career there.
Starting point is 00:12:08 So what are we talking about? The Tim Duncan archetype where you're drafted to a team with a league MVP and David Robinson, who's at the tail end of his prime, the Magic Johnson archetype where you're drafted to a team with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or the Kareem archetype
Starting point is 00:12:23 where, hey, you got Oscar Robertson. Now he's not prime Oscar Robertson, but you got Oscar Robertson. So what are we talking about? Janus. Now, there is almost no one in the country that was higher on the bucks this year than me, higher on Janus throughout this playoff run, I think he's the best player alive taking that crown from LeBron.
Starting point is 00:12:45 and what Janice is, this is one of the most important, impressive title runs ever. With that said, LeBron would have killed to have Drew Holiday, let alone Chris Middleton. He didn't have that. He had Sasha Pavlovich and old Drew Gooden. There is no comp in NBA history for a guy who, who had what LeBron had for seven years, did more with it than him, and won a title, give me a break.
Starting point is 00:13:25 That Cavs team, his final two years there, averaged 64 wins. The four years after he left, average 24 wins, despite having the number one pick three of those four years. Oh, he stacks his teams. Why, by going back to Cleveland and teaming up with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love,
Starting point is 00:13:44 two guys who had a combined zero playoff appearances. Oh, he stacks his team by going to the Lakers, who hadn't made the playoffs in six years, by trading away at the time, traded too much, a whole young core. For Anthony Davis, who had won one playoff series, it's just not the accurate history. And if we are going to do this with,
Starting point is 00:14:14 LeBron, where we are going to play the, why didn't he do what Michael did game? And by the way, Michael, and again, people know this at this point, but it's worth reiterating. Michael never beat Bird Celtics, never. And Michael got his teeth kicked in, not by, or by Isaiah's Pistons, three years in a row. And it wasn't so much that the Bulls got a lot better at that four year as much as it was the Pistons aged out of it. After the Pistons had been to three straight finals, after the Pistons had been in the conference finals seemingly for half a decade, they got old. And also though, and I think people know this, Michael, it's not only that even went a playoff series, he won one playoff game before Scotty got there. You think if they don't draft Scotty and they don't
Starting point is 00:15:11 then hire Phil? Michael's just like, nope, Chicago Bowl for life. Why would he? His draft mate Charles Barclay bailed on Philly when things got bad. But if we're going to do the compare and contrast LeBron to Michael, then we've got to do it in the reverse as well. Three greatest players ever. We can all argue about the order, but if you have a brain and you care it all about the history of the game, you know the three greatest players ever, in some order are Kareem, Michael and LeBron. Well, Kareem, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:47 did have four years of John Wooden and then Oscar Robertson and then Magic Johnson and Pat Riley. Michael did have three years of Dean Smith with James Worthy alongside him and then Phil Jackson. LeBron, meanwhile, had a literal math teacher,
Starting point is 00:16:14 high school basketball coach, then Paul Silas, Mike Brown, Sasha Pavlovich, Ira Neuble, Zedrunas Ilgousis, Moe Williams, who was pretty good for a couple years. Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden. That's who he had. And David Blatt and took them to the finals.
Starting point is 00:16:36 And Spoh, who we now knows a great coach, but had done nothing and won titles. and Frank Vogel, who now everybody loves, but at the time, failed in Orlando, was on his third and final chance. So if we're going to do it one way, we've got to do it the other way.
Starting point is 00:16:51 And I'd say Charles knows better, but on this one, he doesn't. But all he has to do is look to his own career arc. The struggle wasn't the greatness. The struggle was the time to bail. And so you want to make the argument, LeBron should have stuck it out in Cleveland. I hope you feel the same way.
Starting point is 00:17:10 about Dane. Dame never leave Portland. By the way, LeBron would have killed for a C.J. McCollum. Probably would have won a title with a C.J. McCullum. So there's Charles Barkley. I got some thoughts on what Costas said as well. Costas wrote me a letter recommendation to Syracuse University. I love that man.
Starting point is 00:17:31 But he had some questionable commentary as well. We'll play that for you in a bit. But not questionable commentary was Troy Aitman last night on Dak Prescott. And if you're a Cowboys fan and you heard it, I think it makes you nervous. We'll discuss that next. Nick right in for Colin on the herd.
Starting point is 00:17:49 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman.
Starting point is 00:18:10 documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast, Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what.
Starting point is 00:18:39 He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
Starting point is 00:19:00 He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too Steve Nash will get that thing, that man, hell get the flying, he running up the court, licking his fingers
Starting point is 00:19:16 why he got the ball, like, after you go through a training camp with that, Isaiah, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone, it's Rider Strong,
Starting point is 00:19:37 and Will Fidel from PodMeets World. And now the Pod Meets Twirled podcast. were two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, who now have covered Dancing with the Stars, traitors, and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor. So yeah, now we're experts. I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge.
Starting point is 00:19:58 That is the point of the show. I'm just going to remind you. I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough. Did people not like it? Like, what was just because we? Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion
Starting point is 00:20:11 in the 50th season, from the final attempts at gameplay, to the desperate pleas of finalists, to a bunch of ha, who, ha, who, ha, who. Again, we are experts. So make sure to tune into PodMeets Twirled for all our Survivor 50 takes. Listen to PodMeets Twirled on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Agency, the ability to know that we're the experts in our own body. On the podcast, cultivating her space, Dr. Dom and Terry Lomax, a space where black women can show up fully and be heard. I wholeheartedly think, you know, you hit 30. You shouldn't have to share one with anybody.
Starting point is 00:20:49 Mm-hmm. From navigating friendships and healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health. These are real honest conversations. We don't always get to have out loud. Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right? Like, oh, have all three meals and make sure you're mindful during all of them? Absolutely not. During one meal, I'm standing.
Starting point is 00:21:10 I'm not realistic. I'm standing and handing my children food. Because healing, empowerment, and resilience aren't just ideas. They're practices. And this Mental Health Awareness Month, there's no better time to pour back into yourself. Listen to cultivating her space on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Oh, there's Colin doing his favorite thing, waxing poetic, about the sunny wishes he had, Tom Brady. Does it make me a little nauseous?
Starting point is 00:21:41 Eh, maybe. Nick ride in for Colin Cowherd. God, at least it wasn't a rant about the Super Bowl. I might have walked off the set. Alex, you might have had to take over the next 240 because I don't know if I could have dealt with Colin talking. Every time I'm on with him, he reminds me about the damn Super Bowl. If he did it via ghost via vacation,
Starting point is 00:22:03 I don't know that I could have handled it. I really don't. Alex, did you watch the Hall of Fame games? last night first football game we've had since the Super Bowl thank goodness you saw obviously Big Ben doesn't play deck doesn't play would you catch part of the game I caught part of it but I was watching the US Beach volleyball game oh yeah I forgot those are your girls you're your ladies they team America no doubt about it so I actually thought the most interesting parts of the game had to do with
Starting point is 00:22:34 quarterbacks talking one is the current Cowboys quarterback and the other is the former Cowboys quarterback. Let's start with Terry Bradshaw asking Dak about his somewhat confusing and a little opaque shoulder injury and his timeline. How long do you think you'll be able to get in the action and find yourself comfortable?
Starting point is 00:23:02 And number two, I don't understand where the injury was in your shoulder. When I heard it, I thought it would be the rotator side but it's my understanding it's actually underneath the shoulder. Is that correct? Yeah, that's correct. But as far as my ankle, I mean, I've done so much rehab. I've worked continuous, a lot of hours just to get myself back.
Starting point is 00:23:23 And I'm very confident in it. So I don't think it'll take any time before. I'm just back out there. I mean, the practices that I've had, I didn't think about my ankle. I was just being a part of the offense, being a part of all of it. So now it's just about getting the shoulder behind me. And one, we're just being, we're being cautious. We're taking it day by day.
Starting point is 00:23:39 Obviously, it's five weeks before season opener. So I've got a lot of time, and I'm going to use that time and get myself ready for that game. So the shoulder injury is a little concerning, and Jay Glazer reported, and by the way, we'll talk about this at the top of the 1 o'clock Eastern hour. Jay Glazer dropped a bomb about Aaron Rogers and the Packers, like mid-sentence and then quickly moved on. I think it's a huge story. We'll do that in about 35 minutes. But Jay Glazer reported in the midst of all that that the Cowboys,
Starting point is 00:24:11 are so maybe perplexed with Dax injury that they consulted the Texas Rangers not the police but the baseball team because it's potentially
Starting point is 00:24:22 more of a baseball injury and if you heard that sound bite from Dack there's a lot of interesting things there one is he seems much more comfortable talking about his ankle than about his shoulder when the question was primarily
Starting point is 00:24:35 about the shoulder from Terry and the other is he said I'm going to take it day by day and then said, I have five weeks. Well, kind of. You have five weeks until week one, but I don't think you want your first live action to be against that Tampa Front 7 in a game that counts
Starting point is 00:24:57 when the last time you got hit, you suffered a devastating injury and the only real injury of your adult football life when he got his ankle shattered. So all of that was, moderately concerning to me. And then you have Troy Aikman, who Troy doesn't, you know, throw out reckless speculation about any team. But if there's anything Troy is plugged in on, it's the Cowboys. And if there's anything on the Cowboys Troy is plugged in on, it's the
Starting point is 00:25:28 Cowboys quarterback situation. And here's what Troy said mid-second quarter. Yeah, the Cowboys are downplaying it. But I think when your franchise quarterback's missing the amount of time that he's missing, I tend to think it's probably. probably a little bit more significant than what they have led on. And, you know, big year for a lot of people. Yeah, big year for a lot of people. And I think Troy's on to something there, which then leads you to the game last night. And the game last night, Big Ben didn't play, Dack didn't play.
Starting point is 00:26:00 And the three best quarterbacks I saw were in no particular order, Josh Dobbs, Dwayne Haskins, and Mason Roald. And what all three of those guys have in common is none of them play for the Cowboys. The Cowboys three quarterbacks they played last night were Garrett Gilbert, Ben Danucci, and Cooper Rush. And not a single one of those guys looks ready. Forget being a starting quarterback. Looks ready to be a backup quarterback.
Starting point is 00:26:33 The Steelers are going to cut one of those three quarterbacks that I just mentioned, all of them. I would have more confidence in than any of the Cowboys backups, which does beg the question, when you're starting quarterback, who you just invested $160 million into, is coming off a devastating injury, and the timeline was always going to be a little fuzzy.
Starting point is 00:26:59 Why did the Cowboys let themselves go into this season with this being their backup quarterback situation? just look at take my team and the argument might be well if Dack gets hurt we're screwed anyway take my team the Chiefs if there's any team that's quarterback reliant it's the Chiefs
Starting point is 00:27:18 yet what have we seen each of the last two years they have had a backup quarterback come in in a massive spot and deliver them a victory last year was in the playoffs Chad Hennie the Hennie thing is possible play
Starting point is 00:27:35 against the Browns to ice the game. Without that, without Hennie's play once Mahomes went out in that playoff game, the Chiefs don't make the Super Bowl. The year before, and this gets forgotten, when Mahomes got injured and it looked like he was going to be out potentially months and ended up just being out a few weeks, Matt Moore stepped in and beat a playoff team, beat the Minnesota Vikings.
Starting point is 00:28:05 Without that victory, the chiefs don't have home field, they don't have a buy, they probably don't make and then win the Super Bowl. A couple years prior to that, obviously, everyone knows. Nick Foles steps in for wins. They win the Super Bowl. And I'm not saying you have to go spend the type of money the Browns did on your backup quarterback and get Case Keenham. But you look around the league and there's 25 teams.
Starting point is 00:28:33 that if their quarterback misses a game, they're like, okay, we're live. We've got Jacoby Brissette. We've got Tyrod Taylor. We've got someone that we feel comfortable step. We got Teddy Bridgewater. We've got Nick Foles' third string for the Bears. Hell, the Cowboys, at this point, it feels like,
Starting point is 00:28:54 would love to have Andy Dalton back. And it just seems a little irresponsible when your quarterback is coming off the only injury has ever suffered. Fluky things happen like you don't warm up properly as Dax said happened and you strain your shoulder.
Starting point is 00:29:14 Your season starts with two very difficult road games at the Bucks and then at the Chargers to have your backup quarterback situation be Garrett Gilbert who you weren't thrilled when he was playing quarterback if you were a university of Texas fan, much less a Dallas
Starting point is 00:29:34 Cowboys fan, Ben Danucci or Cooper Rush. There is, you know, $5 million can be worse spent than having a guy who if he has to step in for a week or
Starting point is 00:29:50 two, you're not drawing debt. And this Cowboys team, as good as Zeke potentially can be, they are a offense, offense, offense, throw the ball, throw the ball team. The defense you hope for mediocrity
Starting point is 00:30:06 and you hope they score a bunch of points. And what I saw last night from their backup quarterbacks and what I heard from Troy and then heard from DAC concerns me greatly about is Dak going to be ready for week one? And if he's not, do they have any chance of competing
Starting point is 00:30:21 against any of the 31 other teams, much less the defending Super Bowl champion bucks? Here's Alex Curry with the news. No, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, let's talk some Olympics because the United States men's basketball team will face off against France for the gold medal.
Starting point is 00:30:42 France snapped USA's 25-game Olympic winning streak with an 83 to 76 upset in group stages. But the U.S. has found the rhythm since opening, since the opening loss and looks for payback, as well as our fourth straight Olympic gold in the game tonight. So you have to remember, this is a big rematch game and a big deal for USA. So Nick, I want to know how important is this game for KD? Oh, I think, listen, if they win, KD's already become the all-time leading scorer in U.S. basketball Olympic history. He would become the most decorated men's basketball Olympian ever.
Starting point is 00:31:16 And for KD, he's been brilliant these Olympics since the France game. That France game, it was a Saturday morning. I was watching it live on my phone. He was 0 for 6 in the fourth quarter. He was bad. That's when the U.S. really looked to be stumbling. So he can, I don't want to say redeem himself because he's played so well since then.
Starting point is 00:31:39 He's already more than redeemed himself. But it is a big deal. I am, though, bummed, Alex. I know this is a rematch. I know France's really good. But I wanted to see Slovenia in this game. Luca had been spectacular. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:53 And he hurt his wrist midway through the semifinal game, stopped shooting, ended up with 18 assists, And, I mean, they had a layup to win that game and credit to him. Nick Batum blocks it. And now we get U.S. France. I actually think the U.S. has a better chance of beating France than they would have beaten Slovenia because I think Luca could argue he would have been the best player on the court. But, yeah, I mean, they're 11.5 point favorites, Alex.
Starting point is 00:32:19 They need to win. I think they will win tonight. I do too. All right. We're going to stick with the Olympics. In other news, women's basketball team beat Serbia 79 to 59 in the semifinals. They will go for their seventh. straight Olympic gold medal against Japan.
Starting point is 00:32:33 Then we had April Ross and Alex Kleiman who took gold in women's beach volleyball, beating Australia in straight sets. And Allison Felix became the most decorated female track athlete in Olympic history, winning her 10th medal with a bronze in the 400 meter. She's also tied Carl Lewis for the most medals by an American track and field athlete. And what I love most about this story is Allison's comeback. She just went through a really difficult pregnancy. She battled back and came and won an Olympic medal,
Starting point is 00:33:03 just proving that she is a super mom and women, their bodies, they can do anything. Oh, it's unbelievable. And this was the fastest time she has run in the 400 since before she gave birth, since 20, it's the fastest time she's run in six years since 2015. And for her to, and she, by the way, if you watched this race, I mean, she, the gold was out of reach for everyone halfway through the race.
Starting point is 00:33:33 The lady who won the gold was crushing everyone. But Allison easily could have finished sixth. And the fact that she held on to finish third is remarkable. The fact that she even qualified is very impressive. But for her to get the records tying or record setting 10th medal, for her to get a bronze at this age after giving birth, it's unprecedented. And as I mentioned at the top of the show, I've spent a little time with Allison. I interviewed her the very first show I ever did for Colin.
Starting point is 00:34:02 She is a national treasure. Yeah. And I'm so happy she actually was able to complete this feat. It's remarkable. Same. Congratulations once again to Allison. But we're switching gears because Aaron Rogers is back with Packers this season, but it does seem like his time in Green Bay will soon come to an end. As Jay Glazer reported, that the two sides have a deal in place if Roger does decide he wants out.
Starting point is 00:34:26 take a listen. As far as Aaron Rogers and the last dance, look, they have about six months to try and repair that relationship. If at the end of this year, Aaron Rogers decides he wants out, they have to trade Aaron Rogers. They've agreed to it already. That's big news. And I think it explains why Aaron came into training camp, just happy.
Starting point is 00:34:47 So kind of nonchalant. He got what he wanted that we're finding out now. It's like he'll get through this year. He's saying all the right things that he's working on their relationship. He reached out to Jordan Love to make sure he was in the loop, but he knows this is it. This is probably his last season in Green Bay. Yeah, so you read into this exactly what I read into this. And I'm going to, I'll be brief here because we're going to spend a lot of time on this in about 25 minutes.
Starting point is 00:35:14 But, and far be it for me to give Jay Glazer any reporting or journalism tips because he's the best in the business. But I think Jay kind of buried the lead here. He, like, included that mid-sentence. There was, like, a Carson Wentz update, there was a DAC update, and sandwiched in between was what I consider to be massive Aaron Rogers news. And so, kudos to Jay for getting it. Of course, he got it. But I think this is a huge story that nobody else had.
Starting point is 00:35:42 So I agree with you, Alex, that it does speak to why he was in the mindset that he was in when we saw him at that training camp press conference. And we'll discuss that more at the top of the world. 1 o'clock hour. There is Alex Curry with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News.
Starting point is 00:36:04 So, my friend, our coach, Eric Mangini, is going to join us. He, you know, I've talked to him a bit about the Dak Prescott situation, and I think he's going to somehow turn it into the Aaron Rogers situation. I'll let him
Starting point is 00:36:19 explain that. Plus, Coach Manjini's thoughts on that question right on the bottom of the screen, whether or not Patrick Mahomes is already a Hall of Famer, which is another way of saying whether or not Colin Cowherd got something so wrong. We'll talk with Eric Mangini about all that next. Nick Wrighting for Colin on the herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific.
Starting point is 00:36:42 Hey, this is Jason McIntyre. Join me every weekday morning on my podcast, straight fire with Jason McIntyre. This isn't your typical sports pod pushing the same tired narratives down to your throat every day. Straight fire gives you honest opinions on all the biggest sports headlines, accurate stats to help you win big at the sports book, and all the best guests. Do yourself a favor and listen to Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:37:19 It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, The podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed.
Starting point is 00:37:53 And finding ways to win, no matter what we're. what? He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows, without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:38:09 I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reed. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stopped by, like Quentin Richardson,
Starting point is 00:38:25 we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball, like, after you go through a training camp with that, I said, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court,
Starting point is 00:38:41 and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everyone, it's Ryder Strong, and Will Friedel from PodMeets World. And now the Pod Meets Twirled podcast. We're two men who were completely clueless to reality TV, who now have covered Dancing with the Stars, traitors,
Starting point is 00:39:05 and we're gearing up for the season finale of Survivor. So yeah, now we're experts. I know we annoyed a lot of our listeners by our severe lack of survivor knowledge. That is the point of the show. I'm just going to remind you. I have watched some Survivor. I obviously haven't watched enough.
Starting point is 00:39:22 Did people not like it? Like, what was just because we? Yeah. We'll be recapping the big conclusion in the 50th season, from the final attempts at gameplay, to the desperate pleas of finalists to a bunch of ha, who, ha, ha, ooh, ha, ooh, ha, ooh. Again, we are experts.
Starting point is 00:39:37 So make sure to tune into Pod Meets Twirled for all our Survivor 50 takes. Listen to PodMeets Twirled on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Agency, the ability to know that we're the experts in our own body. On the podcast, cultivating her space, Dr. Dom and Terry Lulmex, a space where black women can show up fully and be heard. I wholeheartedly think, you know, you hit 30.
Starting point is 00:40:04 You shouldn't have to share one with anybody. Mm-hmm. From navigating friendships and healing to setting boundaries and prioritizing your mental health. These are real honest conversations. We don't always get to have out loud. Totally unreasonable with different parts of life, right? Like, oh, have all three meals and make sure you're mindful during all of them? Absolutely not.
Starting point is 00:40:25 During one meal, I'm standing. I'm not realistic. It is Nick Wright in for Colin Cowherd on The Herd.
Starting point is 00:40:53 About 20 minutes from now, we'll discuss exactly what's on the bottom of the screen. Gosh, the producers of this television show are just brilliant. We might even discuss, and by the way, if you're listening on the radio, what's on the bottom of the screen is Howard and Rogers won the off-season saga with the Packers. I don't know if Coach Manjini agrees he won the off-season saga with the Packers, however, and he joins us right now, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz the best or nothing. All right, coach, we can start right there, and thank you, as always.
Starting point is 00:41:23 You look wonderful. I feel like you maybe lost a little weight this summer. You look nice and tan. It's great to see you, my friend. Jay Glazer reported yesterday before the Cowboys Steelers game that, hey, the handshake deal. This is Aaron's last year with the Packers. And if at the end of the year, he wants to be traded, they've agreed they'll trade him. You have some very strong thoughts on handshake deals in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:41:51 The floor is yours. Well, first of all, I can't wait to hear what criteria used to say that Aaron Rogers won the offseason with the Packers. I don't see in any objective, using any objective criteria where he can say that he won this. He was looking for a deal that had guaranteed money to make sure that he couldn't be moved on from. That didn't happen. And there was talk about him not playing, but that really wasn't a possibility. so he was able to bring one wide receiver back that cost the club $3 million. How is that a win?
Starting point is 00:42:30 Now, Green Bay had to go through some negative publicity and press. Okay, but they get a really motivated quarterback to come in and, you know, he set something up a way to challenge himself similar to the way Michael Jordan did. they get a motivated, motivated player. How is Green Bay won? And then now the report that he's going to be traded next season and it's verbal, those verbal contracts in the NFL, they don't mean anything. Verbal contracts in the world don't mean anything at all. I got a verbal contract when I was in the league or a verbal promise where,
Starting point is 00:43:10 hey, if you do the following, it doesn't matter what happens. You know, you can go 1 and 15 and it doesn't matter. just do this and look went 9 and 7 and got fired so that's the value of those verbal promises they're worth nothing and if people are trying to connect the dots
Starting point is 00:43:30 what what years coach man jini talking about just check the 9 and 7 year and now you can figure it out uh all right then let's let's talk about the football game from last night because coach I I saw six quarterbacks play and the three
Starting point is 00:43:46 best that I saw in no particular order were Josh Dobbs, Mason Rudolph, and a guy you loved coming out of college. I was skeptical of him, Dwayne Haskins. And all of those guys play for the Steelers. One of
Starting point is 00:44:02 them won't make the team, I would imagine, unless they're going to carry four quarterbacks, which is very atypical in the modern NFL. With that coming off a massive injury and having massive surgery in the last 10
Starting point is 00:44:18 months, do you find it odd that the Cowboys didn't make having just a competent, you know, established backup quarterback? I'm not saying you tell Philip Rivers will give you 15 million to come out of retirement, but a guy who was started NFL games like they had last year with Dalton. Are you surprised that wasn't a higher priority for them? Well, you and I discuss this all the time and not to just be contrarian here, but I feel like you often say that the situation in Green Bay where as an organization, they went and drafted a competent backup in case their MVP quarterback got hurt. And they had a player there who they hoped and they believe could carry the team should that happen. I firmly believe in that. I think you need a really good backup because we see it every year.
Starting point is 00:45:15 Team goes deep into the season and then late in the season their starter goes down. It very rarely works out where the backup comes in and does it. Nick Foles is such an aberration, but usually that team implodes. So yes, I agree they should have someone better placed than they do right now. but I also think that's part of the reason Green Bay did what they did when they drafted Jordan Love. Well, isn't there, coach, just stay here just for a moment. There's a happy medium, right? I'm going to use an odd analogy.
Starting point is 00:45:51 If Dak Prescott or Aaron Rogers use a car, if there are Rolls-Royces, it's one thing to take a second mortgage out on my house to buy BMW as my backup car. and another thing entirely to be like, I have a tricycle as my backup car, which is Garrett Gilbert. There's a happy medium between the two, between having no, you know, having essentially a third or fourth stringer is your backup,
Starting point is 00:46:20 and using two valuable assets, a first-round pick and the fourth-round pick you traded to move up in order to get your backup. There's somewhere in between, like $5 million for Jacoby Brissette or something like that, that maybe threads the needle, right? Well, but you're comparing it to the whole car.
Starting point is 00:46:39 I think it's a little bit more like the engine. So if you believe that your team is a Rolls-Royce, it's hard to go put an engine into a Rolls-Royce that doesn't fit with a Rolls-Royce and expect it to run with any kind of efficiency. So ideally you have the component to put into that car if the engine breaks down. So that's more.
Starting point is 00:47:03 the thought process. Yeah, you can go get a beat-up used engine and try to put in a nice car and hope that it runs, but it never does. And when you've got a really good team and you believe you have a good team to have some depth and meaningful depth of quarterback position, it's a great situation. And you draft them in the first round, you've got five years a relatively cheap labor as a backup in that position. Think about how many backups we see that get $10 million. that get numbers that are staggering for guys that aren't even close to that number. Coach and Brian Gutenkoons, they're on a two-person group chat of the two people left in the world who likes the Jordan Love Pick. They're the only people, they're the only people, Coach Manjini and Brian Goodenkins, the only people in the world still defending the Jordan Love Pick.
Starting point is 00:47:56 It's just unbelievable. I get accused of being anti-player. It's not that. I'm just pro-reality. There's a reality that exists in the league that some people don't want to recognize, but it's there. And not every decision is some sort of conspiracy theory with a grassy knoll where you're out to get somebody.
Starting point is 00:48:18 Well, let's talk about this reality. I'm really confused by, to be honest, the way Carson Wentz has been handled almost his whole career. Like we talk about the MVP, he almost won more than we talk about MVP's that guys actually won? It's like the guy was unbelievable for three months. Therefore, you should never draft competition for him. Therefore, he's in Indianapolis now.
Starting point is 00:48:47 He's heard again, shocker. And it's like, Frank Reich, you know, got in front of it and was like, no, no, this is Carson's team because of all the zero games he's played for the cults in his career. I, you know, I said the other day, it's really tough in this league if you're fragile, physically and mentally. And I don't mean general mental health. I mean as far as like competing. And if you're going to be thrown off by a backup quarterback being in there, that's
Starting point is 00:49:15 concerning. I think the cults have a really good roster. What's your thoughts on, you know, their situation with Carson being heard and then seemingly wanting to protect Carson from competition, I guess? I'm going to say something I don't say very often, but I absolutely. 100% agree with you, Nick. Absolutely. And we all have heard that saying to whom much is given, much is expected.
Starting point is 00:49:42 And much has been given to Carson Wentz and much is expected of him. And you have to, he's had so many opportunities. He's been protected. He was with the team that drafted him. He was paid by the team that drafted him. He got another tremendous opportunity. And whether it's been poor play or injury, hasn't lived up to his side of the bargain.
Starting point is 00:50:06 So to bring someone in, to compete with him, to say that there is a, there is the potential that you could lose your job, I don't think that that's unreasonable. And a lot of players get very frustrated with the way that quarterbacks are handled because everybody else is constantly, not threatened by competition, but constantly challenged by competition, but yet we don't want to challenge a position that we need to be most resilient. We need to be most ready to handle adversity. And it doesn't make any sense. It's counterintuitive. I agree with your take on this all the way. All right. Lastly, before you go, you accused me during Patrick Mahomes' second season in the
Starting point is 00:50:54 league of already putting him in the Hall of Fame. And I was right. He was are clearly going to be Hall of Famer. Colin Cowher came out the other day and was like, oh, Mahomes, let's all pump the brakes. Not yet a Hall of Famer. I'm curious, you, coach, and we only have about 40 seconds here, if Mahomes today retired and you're on the Hall of War,
Starting point is 00:51:13 one of the 50 All of Fame voters, does he get your vote? No, no. So Ernie Nevers, Ernie Nevers played 54 games, okay, back in 1926 with the Duluthesstamos. He played the least amount of games. in the history of the NFL and made the Hall of Fame. And that's still more games than Patrick Mojones has. And that's a player that was from the 20s,
Starting point is 00:51:37 scored 40 points in a game at six touchdowns and a game, kicked, did everything, did everything. He is the bar back in 1926. So nope, he's going to have to be playing. He doesn't have a Super Bowl MVP and a league MVP. I love you, coach. I hate to leave you on something you're so wrong on. We talk Aaron Rogers next on the herd.
Starting point is 00:51:56 Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:52:20 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Starting point is 00:52:36 Absolutely. A redacted amount of years later, we're still joined at the hip. Just a little bit bigger hips. This is a podcast. We're recording it as we tailgate our youth soccer games in the back of my Honda Odyssey. With all the snacks and drinks. Why did you get hard seltzer instead of beer? Oh, they had a bogo.
Starting point is 00:52:53 Well, then you got them. Listen to soccer moms on the Iheart radio app. Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was part of it. You just understood. That's how personal it got. Wow.
Starting point is 00:53:16 Then after that game seven, Mark keep coming to him. He's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the I Heart Radio app. Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
