Allen on the herd. And there's some legitimate on this Friday afternoon breaking NFL news via a Josh Allen contract extension. Who better to break that down and discuss that with us than one of our best NFL analysts on the Cowherd Global Network. My friend, Bucky Brooks, always good to talk to the son, the fellow son of a firefighter. Bucky, let's start with the news. Six years, 258 million. Now, the devil's always in the details on these things, but the details seem pretty damn good. Reportedly, $150 million guaranteed, $100 million fully guaranteed for Josh Allen.

Your immediate reaction when you heard about the contract and the details. Oh, the $40 million club has gotten bigger because Josh Allen will go in. So that means Lamar Jackson is the next one to go in. And we were waiting to see which of the young guys was going to sign their deal first and how much they were going to get because it set the market. So now we have we have Josh Allen done, and I think that comes in around $43 million annually on that extension. And then you have 100 fully guaranteed $150 in guarantees.

Lamar Jackson is going to have to get north of that because when you look at the resume, his resume is going to say, hey, I'm an MVP. You look at the things that we've done going to the playoffs three straight years when I've been the starter. The record that the Baltimore Ravens has when he has been the starting quarterback. We can talk about stylistically. Lamar Jackson maybe doesn't deserve to be in the $40 million club.

But if I'm Lamar Jackson, I look at Josh Allen and says, if he gets it, I definitely got to get it because when we look at the details, like you said with Josh Allen, last year was the first year that he's ever averaged over 200 passing yards per game. And if we're going to talk about Lamar Jackson being a runner more than the thrower, I think the comparison with Josh Allen serves him well when it comes to that negotiation. Well, so let's stay there because it is, it's very difficult to make the argument that Josh Allen has accomplished more than Lamar in this league. And some people will be like, well, but, you know, Josh was spectacular last year. He was.

But he didn't win a league MVP. Lamar's done that. Lamar now has also won a playoff game. Now, granted, Josh Allen won two playoff games this year. But Lamar, you can't saddle him with the can't win a playoff game after the first two seasons when he played. played poorly in the postseason. So I agree with you that this is kind of sets. The floor seems too harsh.

Like that Lamar's got to say, you've got to give me at least that. So I guess that is the floor. I'm not saying he would ask for well more than that. But from the Ravens perspective, when the Ravens saw this deal, do you think they were happy, sad, or neutral? Like when they saw what Josh Allen got,

how do you think they reacted? Well, obviously, I think they would want to be first to the table because then they don't have to necessarily compete against a deal that is already done. Here's the thing, though. The deals now for the young quarterbacks, I would say Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, it had to come in somewhere between 40 and 45 million annually. Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott, Deshawn Watson, it had to be in their range. And so you're the Baltimore Ravens. You had to know, look, this is the cost of doing. business. The trick will be, if I'm the Baltimore Ravens, can I do a shorter deal and

fully guarantee it? So if I do have some doubts about Lamar Jackson, it's not necessarily a long marriage between the two if we don't believe he can progress as a passer. But maybe we go, I don't know, three years guarantee, what, 91, 135 period? Yeah, something like that. $135 million guarantee that, and then away we go and we live with that on a three-year, $135 million fully guaranteed deal. Because I think you're going to have to do something like that to get them to sign a short-term deal. So let's stay on this just for one more question, because we've mentioned Josh Allen, we've mentioned Lamar. There's another quarterback in that draft class who happened to be the number one pick of that draft class,

who is also coming off the best year of his career, who also won a play. playoff game. And that's Baker Mayfield. Now, I think most people expect, at least I do, that Baker of the three, if they were all get deals, Bakers would be the least per year, because he hasn't played at the level that Josh did last year or that Lamar has over the last three years. Do you think that is how, like, do you think with this coming in at 43, Baker's people will accept not being in the $40 million a year club? Do you think they should? Do you think a deal gets done between Baker and the Browns? Here's the thing. I think Baker should probably follow the path of Dak Prescott.

Because what we've seen, time allows the price tag to continue to go up. It doesn't come back down. And so it's going to be hard for Baker's representatives in my mind to negotiate with the Cleveland Browns and say, hey, Baker-Mathfield deserves to be in the same range as Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson because his individual accomplishments don't match up to the accomplishments of those guys. his best bet is to go back to Cleveland this year lead Cleveland to a deep postseason run and then he is able to say like

hey we talk about winning is the most important thing when it comes to quarterbacks I have done it at a high level I need to be rewarded for the team success because look at what it looked like prior to me and now look at how the team is trending with me as the quarterback all right speaking of quarterbacks I want to spend just a moment

on last night's preseason game six quarterbacks played. Obviously, Dak and Ben didn't play. I thought the three best quarterbacks all played for the Steelers. Josh Dobbs, I thought, looked fine. I've always liked Josh Dobbs, maybe I'm partial. Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys, if I'm a Cowboys fan and Dak's coming off that ankle injury and now he's dealing with a kind of bizarre, like under the shoulder injury. We don't really know what it is. I'm not only anxious, I'm a little annoyed that I'm going to be.

going into this season with a third or fourth string quarterback as my backup quarterback, whichever one it is, whether it's Danucci, Rush, or Gilbert. What do you make of the Cowboys seemingly bypassing backup quarterback on the roster this year? See, here's the thing. Here's what happens. When you pay the quarterback, it makes it harder for you to pay the backup quarterback because now you have so much money tied into the position. Dag Prescott getting $40 million to get a,

solid veteran quarterback. You're talking about $5 to $7 million. Man, now we're tying up $45, almost $50 million just in the quarterback room on the salary cap. What you hope that you're able to do is maybe I can find a young, cheap option, someone who can get us through a couple games

if that was to undergo an injury. But when you watch them play, who do you feel good about being able to do that? The only person that I can see me in the backup is maybe Gilbert. The rest of the guys, Danucci and Rush, I just don't see those guys that's having the long-term staying power to be a legitimate,

confident QB2 for this team. Yeah, I think I'd sign whichever one of the three Steelers quarterback gets cut. Steelers aren't going to keep four. One of those guys getting cut. I think I'd sign that one. All right, so I want to go to, if we can, for a moment, two New York head coaches, very different approaches, right? Robert Sala came out and basically

Coach Manjini called it he had a very zen-like approach. He was, you know, he's like, hey, we're all men. We all, you know, we want them to understand why they make a mistake if they do it. And then you have Joe Judge. Lap it up, boys.

He had knuckle push-ups, yelling at it, yelling at folks. As a guy who played in this league, as a guy who's been around a bunch of teams and been a scout, does that lap-it-up stuff play, A, with grown men, but B, and I think more importantly, when you as a head coach don't have your bona fides.

Joe, Judge, one thing if you got a handful of Super Bowl rings, but when you're trying to do the Parcells method, kind of, without the Parcells cachet, how do you think that plays with his team? You know, it's interesting because I think both approaches can work in the right situation. I think for Robert Salas' approach to work, he has to have to have. have a very mature team. And time will tell if the Jets are mature enough to handle that kind of coaching. For Joe Judge, I think this can work in New York because when you look at the most

successful coaches in New York, they've kind of subscribed to that style. Tough, hard nose, grizzled, very confrontational. But their players in turn respond because they feel like that's the authenticity or that's the authentic coaching style. That's the authentic personality of the coach. The thing that I'll say about Joe Judge, as long as Joe Judge is consistent, it can work. If he's been like that from day one and there's been no change in how he goes about and how he interacts with the team, it can work. If he also balances those hard-nosed tactics with loving his team up behind the scenes, really building relationships to get to know them.

Because if you get to know them, then you can coach them hard. So if Joe Judge works on that part of it, where he's communicating with them and really asking them about themselves beyond what they can bring to the table as football players, he absolutely can coach the team in their style, but it's about really developing a bond that allows his players to know, A, I can trust him because what he wants for me is for me to be the best version of myself, even though he may communicate it in a harsher fashion than I may like. No false praise. Oh, thanks. Well, the relationship between Ben Simmons and the 76ers continues to deteriorate. Simmons has reportedly cut off all communication with the organization and everything is going through his agent. The Sixers have been exploring trade options for Simmons this offseason and even made a proposal to the Warriors, a team that Simmons is said to be open to. But the deal was reportedly rejected because the asking price was too high.

Now, I think at this point, it is going to be best for both parties to move Simmons. He's made it clear that he wants to move. His heart is not in this team anymore, and that's going to affect team chemistry. And if it doesn't happen, it might not be pretty come the start of training camp season, all that jazz. I agree with you that it could get ugly, but I also, and I haven't talked with Daryl about this, but I know Darry really well. Darry is not going to trade Ben Simmons

for what he thinks is 60 cents on the dollar. And I also think as long as Damian Lillard is dangling out there as a possibility and to a lesser extent, Bradley Beale, you're really going to have to bowl the Sixers over with an unbelievable offer because I think they look at it and say if Dame comes available,

who can offer a better young player back to Portland than we can. Like, do the Pelicans, are they going to offer Brandon Ingram? Maybe. Would you rather have Brandon Ingram than Ben Simmons? Some people would. I wouldn't. So I think this could get uncomfortable.

Yeah, because unless there is a team that is willing to meet what is a massive asking price evidenced by what Daryl asked of the Sixers, I'm sorry, of the Warriors, I think Ben's going to start training camp and potentially the season on Philly. And we'll see the other element to this Alex is we'll see how the Philly fans treat Ben Simmons if he is there for their first home game

because they're notoriously can be hard on everybody. And when you make it clear that you want to move, fans aren't going to be happy about it. Teammates aren't going to be happy about it. So it's going to be interesting. It could get a little spicy. But let's move to the Cowboys because Dak Prescott did not participate

in the Hall of Fame game last night as he worked through a shoulder injury. He said on the Fox broadcast that the Cowboys are being cautious since they still have five weeks until the season opener. He also addressed that last year's season ending injury and said he is very confident in his ankle. Now, I think anytime it's your franchise quarterback and he's coming off his first major injury and then immediately re-injures something else, this is a big deal. You also don't have a great backup option. This is a big deal. This is a big deal. You also don't have a great backup option. this is a big deal. But even with all that said, according to Fox Bet,

Dak Prescott is a favorite to win comeback player of the year at plus 165. Oh. So, by the way, that's a chance. That graphic right there, that's an amazing graphic in this regard. It reminds you of how many great players

were lost last year to injury. I mean, that's two of your four best running backs in football. That's arguably the best pass rusher in football, certainly on the short list. The number one pick of the draft and Dak Prescott, all because the way you win comeback player of the year is you get hurt in the previous year.

And so that, I mean, that's a pretty remarkable list. Here's the thing. I don't agree with Dak that he's got five weeks. No. Because if you're Dak Prescott and the last time you got hit, you had your ankle snapped.

And I know right now the issue's not the ankle to the shoulder. I don't want my first live action to be week one against Tampa. I want to get into a preseason game to kind of knock some of that rust off. And the other thing, Alex, that was reported by Jay Glazer yesterday, is the Dallas Cowboys have reached out to the Texas Rangers baseball team, their medical staff, which, by the way, I applaud them for not being so, like, having so much pride. Oh, we're not going to talk to anyone.

Try to get as much smart people in the room as possible. But because it's such an odd injury for a football player that it's somewhere under the arm, that's concerning. And I do believe that Dax's confident in the ankle. But the shoulder right now, it's not a rotator cup. It's not the top of the shoulder. So that to me is something that if you're a Cowboys fan, you have to be very anxious about, very anxious. Oh, yeah.

If you don't have clarity on what exactly the injury is and you don't have a past history of seeing someone else who had it, how much time it took them to recover from it, and you don't even know how to go about handling it. It sounds more like a pitcher's injury than a football injury. So this is going to be... 100%. This is going to be very interesting to see how it plays out. But I would be a little more worried than not worried.

We're sticking with the Cowboys. Absolutely right. Jimmy Johnson will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this weekend. And during the Fox pregame last night, Jerry Jones announced that Johnson will also get its place in the Cowboys Ring of Honor. I think we've got some great days ahead of us. I know we are going to certainly be recognizing what's happening here with the Hall of Fame. But Texan, who started that Ring of Honor, said, Jerry, keep it, keep it kind of limited with people.

But make sure it wasn't just about the plays they made. Make sure they contributed to the story of the franchise. Now, it's kind of hard to not recognize. this contribution to the story of the franchise. No doubt. So are we making an announcement here? Well, we can be. If we can, I don't know how we're going to upstate.

No, yeah, you can. Go ahead. Make the announcement. But we'll be in the ring of honor. There we go. Jerry. Love it. You heard it here.

It will be first. While I'm alive. And we're jimmy on the show this week. I mean, he is such a great human, incredible coach. He deserves all of this praise. That's a huge congratulations. That's so cool. And he dealt with that beautifully.

Yes. And I'm very happy for him. It is happening roughly 25 years after it should have. I don't care with the terms Jimmy and Jerry left on. You won back-to-back Super Bowls with him after the team was one in 15 shortly after he got there, or right when he was getting there. And then they won another Super Bowl with the team he built. It was borderline outrageous.

He wasn't already in the Ring of Honor. But I love that Jimmy, you know, and kind of lightened the moment with the While I'm alive comment. But I'm so, right, I'm so happy for him. It is very well deserved. It was ridiculous. He wasn't in there already. He's a great colleague, obviously one of the best coaches ever.

So I guess I've landed on, yes, we will. But I have to give a little background on this. When I was 11 years old, maybe 12, I happened to be at an event with my mom that Bob Costas was the MC. of. And I went up to him because I was the only kid there and I was like Mr. Costas, you do what I want to do. Can you please give me some advice? Tell me

where you went to school. And he was like, I went to Syracuse University. I worked at W.A.R. and talked to me for five minutes. And then I walked away and he then stopped my mom and said, was that your son? She said, yeah. He's like, here's my home

address. I want him to write me. And for the rest of my youth, up to and including when I was applying to Syracuse,

Kostis corresponded with me, I saw him once a year. It was an unbelievably kind thing he did for me

over the course of a decade. And it helped shape who I am now, right? I also think he's the

greatest broadcast, sports broadcaster ever. So I hesitate to say he had a

bad take. Because I adore the man and I owe the man so much and I'm glad he's back on television with now by the way one of my best friends but moni jones but when he was talking with berkeley about lebron cost is said lebron might be as excellent as michael but he'll never be as great as and here was the reasoning that he gave i think we can play it now none of this is lebron's fault but in that era that you played in in the 90s, factor my bias in. The NBA is on NBC.

The promos are on Seinfeld and on ER and on Cosby and David Letterman and Johnny Carson the Today Show, The Tonight Show. They're not a cable entity. Little old ladies in Omaha said, no, not tonight, Mildred. I got to watch Michael Jordan. No comparable little old lady ever said through no fault of LeBron's. No, stop everything. I got to watch LeBron.

It's not the same. and to misquote Rick James nostalgia is a hell of a drug because what you see right there is the attachment folks have

either in some cases to their youth or in other cases to you know what they came up in and when you think of Michael Jordan and the Bulls of the 90s You know what also rattles around in your brain? The John Tesh NBA on NBC theme song, arguably the greatest sports theme song ever, which I think FS1 now has for our college basketball package. But you can hear it playing in your head right now and you see Bob Costas sitting sideline broadcasting the games.

Like they are part and parcel together. And the reason I say that is because when what you're, you know, what you're in the game. you hear today is guys, like, for example, my dear friend Chris Broussard, who came up in the league covering Michael, and guys who, like Charles Barkley, who played against Michael, who of course their prime was the greatest time ever. And by the way, I'm sure I'll do this one day. I'm sure in 35 years when Janice Andingoupo the second is averaging 44, 18, and 12, I'm going to say, I'm telling you right now, if there was, the hand-checking they allow in today's game would never fly when LeBron was doing it. I'm sure I will.

But Bob Kossis is the greatest sports broadcaster ever. and part of his argument for Michael Jordan's greatness is that his games were promoted on Seinfeld as opposed to today when games are promoted via social media and via your phone and the idea that you were on Johnny Carson Johnny Carson because that in a that represents a time and a place that is for a lot of people greater than. And it's the same thing.

If you have any die-hard sports fans in your life that are really old, and I mean really old, guess who they will to a disproportionate level cape for? Wilt. Because when they were kids, Wilt was running rough shot over the NBA. Oddly, Kareem doesn't have this type of like, fandom. Maybe it's because he hasn't courted it the way others had. But it is not a coincidence

that the most ardent MJ is the goat supporters are usually all around the same generation and all have around the same experiences of how they consumed the league or in Barclays case played against him. And that's the other issue with this discussion is so many of the people setting the table for it, their legacy is tied in a way to Michaels. Charles Barkley, it matters that Michael's the greatest player ever. Because then Charles, it's not that he lost in the finals, he lost in the finals to the goat.

And while, listen, Bob Costis, greatest sports broadcaster of all time, I would argue, and has done a thousand Olympics and done everything you can do, the thing he's most tied to, at least in my mind, are the Jordan Bulls. He broadcast all the games. And it's just fascinating to me the way we are able to romanticize or gloss over the imperfections of things from our youth or from our prime.

And again, I am sure. I will do the same thing. There is no doubt that if I'm on TV in 30 years and there is someone who is demonstrably and objectively bigger and stronger and faster and played longer and at a higher level than LeBron, I will find a way to twist myself in knots and be like, well, but the league was just better than.

And I'm telling you, you don't understand the global reach. Like, everyone eventually falls, you know, prey to the narcotic of nostalgia, even as we saw there, my dear friend and once upon a time mentor, Bob Costas.
