I hope you had a spectacular weekend. Personally, I watched more, like, I should have planned this thing better. I really should have. I had knee surgery on Friday afternoon, and I should have done it first football weekend of the season.

If I knew where I would be located, which was obviously, my couch with my remote. I guess I should have known. I should have done that. Regardless of which, I did get a chance to see NFL football of some variety with the Hall of Fame game. We did see Team USA victoriously. They were victorious in the gold medal winning game.

I want to get to my thoughts on Kevin Durant and what was gained, what was lost in our gold medal performance. and, well, we got some other stuff to get to as well. Like the Hall of Fame speeches, which, like, I get, like, wrap these things up. The guy you want to hear more from in Peyton Manning, we only got six minutes up. So it was just filled with one lines and zingers and a great Mamba out, you know, God bless football line. But we got a good, we got a good amount to get to. Plus, Jason Lockham, 4 will join us.

John McCain, of course, covered the Houston Texans. since they became the Houston Texans, since their infancy, going back to the Houston other days covered NFL football. He tweeted out earlier today that Deshaun Watson will never play for the Houston Texans ever again. And then Albert Breer tweeted out that the Texans are still trying to work out a way in which he can play for the, it's very confusing. We'll figure out Deshaun Watson, Jimmy Garapolo, and some other stuff.

We got a litany of quality football guests. Speaking of football, the big news over the weekend is Josh Allen, star quarterback, Buffalo Bills, signs a new deal. deal. Now, the new deal will keep him in Buffalo for, what is it, six more years and in addition, potentially, six more years in addition to the two years remaining on his contract. Now, we'll get to what it means for two other quarterbacks, same draft class, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield in a second. But here's one where you do, you scratch your head and you, you wonder aloud, hold down now, is this another Jared Goff?

Now, the stats would tell you there's a lot of eerys similarities. You're like, no way, Josh Allen's way better than Jared Goff. I tend to agree with you. I tend to agree with you. But if you just look at it from the raw stats, right? It's kind of alarming. Win percentage. And I will grant you that Jared Goff, it felt like once he took over,

It was taking over a better roster. But the fact is, if you look back, the Rams were bad. They were bad in his first year. So it wasn't like they were an 8-and-8 team under the previous regime. But still, Jared Gough has won 63.1% of his games. Josh Allen has 1,63.6% of his games during his first three years in the NFL. Their completion percentage, Jared Gough, 62.1, Josh Allen, 61.8. Their touchdown to interception ratio.

Josh Allen, couple more TDs, 67 to the 65 of golf, but also Josh Allen, couple more interceptions, 31 to 26. Yards gained, 9,700 via the pass for Josh Allen, 9581 for Jared Gough. Yards per attempt, actually more for Jared Gough, 7.7 to 7.2 for Josh Allen. Passer rating, Jared Gough actually higher, 94.7 to 90.4. So you look at it and you're like, man, on the stats, I don't know, is that? Jared Gough, actually, was he better? in his first three years than Josh Allen. And if, you know, we do this keeping up with the Jones's thing, but should we keep up with the Joneses when they spent poorly like the L.A. Rams did?

Look, I was at Rams camp last week and they could not be more excited about Matt Stafford. And they do appear to not just be another playoff team, but a team that if they're healthy, if Aaron Donald's healthy, Matt Stafford's healthy, their offensive lines healthy, no reason to think they can't compete for a Super Bowl. But they signed Jared Goff to an extension a year. before they needed to, much like Josh Allen, and they rude the day. They just did. Now, there's, here is the, here are the differences.

Josh Allen was drafted by the same head coach and general manager that he's playing for. Remember, Jared Goff was, was, was drafted by the previous regime, different head coach. Okay. So Sean McVeigh did not, who is a quarterback whisper, a quarterback guru. He's a Gruden guy who you do think can run out of patience with quarterbacks. Sean McVeigh was not the head coach there when they drafted them. So there is a little bit of sweat equity there. In addition, the things that we aren't pointing out is that Josh Allen is a far better athlete.

And he's made plays with his legs. He's also one of the reasons for more interceptions is he pushes the ball downfield more often. And it was one of the things that really burned Sean McVey on Jared Gough was he wouldn't take chances on their explosive plays. But this is not a perfect science. And stats are not always telling. And I believe the bills have a better quarterback, a better fit. They play in worse conditions and they got a stronger arm guy.

And right now they're doing a victory lap saying we finally found our quarterback. We've been searching since Jim Kelly retired to find our next grade quarterback. and we got him and we locked him up. But there is precedence for this type of early success and yet not being the right contract, not being the right guy. Which brings us to the Ravens. John Harbaugh said, quote, it's not really a hurry for us. He's going to be our quarterback for years to come.

Remember, the Ravens, much like the bills, much like the Browns. You have two more years of contract and then potentially two more years of franchise tag if you want to. that time, you know, during the next four seasons, you can negotiate some sort of long-term extension. And with the cap spiking up next year after being down this year, there's untold millions out there for Lamar. And let's also be honest. We have questions about Lamar's longevity in terms of his health. He proved a lot of people wrong in terms of his ability to come from behind, get a road win in the playoffs, two things we didn't think he could do. And he has done. Now he has to take the next

step and the challenge to Lamar Jackson is once he starts making all that money, he's played with a Super Bowl defense his first three seasons. Once he starts making all that money, can the Raven still support him? And can the entirety of the team be good enough for when Lamar goes on his inaccurate streaks, where he turns the football over. For Baker Mayfield, you know, I don't know what his thinking is. Every quarterback comes into this thinking, whatever the highest, dollar value that the last contract sign was, I'm going to get one dollar more.

But I think all of us are reasonable thinking Baker Mayfield's not that guy. He is, and there's an absence of a middle class in quarterback play. And Baker Mayfield feels like the first of the guys that'll be, he's not a $40 million year guy. He's probably not a mid-30s guy. But in the high 20s, with the salary cap going up, if you can continue to surround him with all of these players, he's a pretty good leader and a pretty good quarterback. That's, I think, the feeling.

but if he prices himself out, he could be out. Look, I like that the Ravens and the Browns are going to let this thing play out a little bit. Hey, the more info we have, if he's really the guy, he's really the guy. And we'll figure out what to do with the fifth year that contract works by. And we'll figure out what to do with the franchise tax. And I do, look, I think Josh Allen appears to be an absolute stud. He improved in his accuracy from your two to year. or three and that type of jump we don't normally see and we'll see if he's able to maintain that

level or even improve it. Lamar Jackson has improved in his accuracy for the most part. Took a little bit of a step back in many ways last year, but now they continue to try and mold and fit that offense around him and he had COVID last year and other things set him back. I'm a sit and wait guy. I would rather pay more. This is like me. You know what this is like? This is like if you're going to go on a trip. And it really comes down to the type of person you are. Some people, the second they know they're going to go on a trip, they go and lock in and get the flights. To me, the flexibility is, is, is, is way more valuable, way more valuable. I would rather pay $100 more and fly at the last second where I get the exact times at the exact airport,

at the exact location that I want instead of, hey man, look at this killer rate. Yeah, but you got to fly out of Ontario. Not LA, not Ontario, California, Ontario Canada, right? No, you got to fly out of some nondescript airport, you have a long layover, you don't stay exactly at the resort, like, what am I doing here? Just to save money? If you're the Ravens, you're the bills, you're the Rams, you're the Browns, aren't you better off spending a little bit more but being completely and totally sure of what you got and how you want to use it? We don't know what the cap's going to look like. We don't know what football is going to look like with 17 games this year. we don't know a lot of things.

Heck, last year, if you really want to be honest, last year was the easiest year to play quarterback in the NFL. No, you didn't have the same prep time, but you didn't have road opposing fans to cause any sort of noise or any sort of ruckus. These veteran quarterbacks, even the rookie quarterbacks, they're not walking into hostile environments last year.

So if it's me, I'm better off with the Ravens. The Ravens being cautiously optimistic. We'll get a deal. done. We may end up paying a little bit more than we want to, but at least we know what we're getting when we pay for it. And we know what the salaries look like. And we know what some of these new pieces fit in around it. And we know if Lamar has taken that next step, or was it a step back because he just has a lower ceiling than we thought. The same thing for Baker. Remember, Baker had some downs. There were some doubts last year. There were some times in which he was holding

them back. Now, I think talent wise, they're a favorite to not. just make the playoffs like they did last year, but make a run in the playoffs. If he holds them back, then that should temper your enthusiasm with a contract. This is just like booking flights. Heck, it's just like going to flights. I like booking flights at the last moment. I like showing up at the airport the last moment. I like the complete, I like as much freedom to make a decision and make a change as possible.

That's valuable to me. And God bless the bills. They've been searching for 20 years. to find that guy and they think they found that guy. But between Carson Wentz and Jared Goff, those are two. Even Derek Carr, those are some contracts, which I think most of us would say, I'd like to take that one back. Maybe not necessarily even the dollars, just the year in which they decided to do it.

Doing it early before you absolutely know and then getting burned, there is Preston for it. And while I think Josh Allen is much better than Jared Goff, and the Buffalo bills drafted him, they coached him, and he's led them to the playoffs, and he appears to be a guy who continues to improve and work. And some of the work ethic with Jared Goff was called into question. The fact is, they cut out any of their sort of flexibility so that they have cost certainty, which is fine. Again, there's a given to take there.

They know what their quarterback's going to cost for the next half decade or so. That has value to them. To me, what has value is flexibility. All right, coming up next, Jason Lockhamforah. Feels like the Niners trying to sell him to other teams.

and they kind of bear down and get that thing hashed out because it was in a good place. It has always been in a good place. And both sides really felt the motivation to get it done before they start playing preseason games or regular season games. Big contract. I understand why it's a big contract. I think the way that they framed it, you know, it's great. And where the cap should be so, I think, if you're free, if you size up percentage of cap,

it's not going to be as daunting as it may look now when we're sitting in a situation where, you know, not only did it not go up, it quickly down. It's a similar plan to the Chiefs, right? I mean, it's like, hey,

we can load up. It is, it is, but from his standpoint, he didn't give away nearly as many years, and it takes Mahomes to really like the eighth year of the deal to surpasses.

him in cash flow. Now, you're beyond guarantees with him at that point, so could something go awry in year five or six from a health standpoint or otherwise, and Mahomes end up, you know, passing him sooner, I guess, but with these rolling guarantees, you know, the timing of that and what we have with modern science now where, you know, it seems like Joe Burrow just got hurt and I'm old enough to remember him in 11-11 Joe's in Cincinnati on Saturday when I was there. You know, I tend to think that, you know, you look at the Haven, the Dak Prescott thing, right? I mean, he came back and made more money.

So the idea that he would have an injury, you know, at a certain point in time that would make them want to walk away from that thing seems pretty remote. So if I'm sizing the two up, you know, it portends perhaps Alan getting another bite at the apple sooner, depending whether the chiefs are willing to negotiate a contract with seven years still on it, hypothetically. And I think from a cash flow standpoint, you just keep coming back to when Mahomes only takes 63 in the first three years, it's going to take him a while to start passing other people.

But to his credit, you know, they kept Chris Jones. They add the highest paid, you know, offensive linemen in the league. At the same time, they still had another $20 million for Trent Williams. He just decided to take it somewhere else. So I get it. And Patrick Mahomes is going to be fine. And what Patrick Mahomes makes off the field and everything else, I get it. But when you really look at the hard dollars, Mahomes is digging out of a hole for half that contract.

Yeah, yeah, which I think is the goodwill to where they'll probably tear it up at some point in the, you know, in midway through it. But it's also, it also, though, proves the point which a GM told me last week where he said, you know, when we save money from one guy, we don't put in our pocket, we generally go and spend it on somebody else. It's kind of a misconception there when people think teams save money on a contract. Well, some do. I mean, some do. Trust me, not everybody spends to the cap. I mean, they're, you know, these guys are, they're ready to make money, too.

So, yes, I mean, there are teams that are motivated, like the Chiefs, where you know that savings is being poured all over the place. But there's a lot of other places where they lose players and they blame it on the cap. but Jason Lockham for joining us here for CBS Sports NFL Insider. Okay, so the Ravens don't seem in a rush. How much of that is that Lamar wants it to drag out longer because there's more dollars the longer you wait, how much of it is, look, there's still always the concern that Lamar is going to get hurt the way he plays.

Through those, I just think this is a different sort of dance here with a different sort of quarterback who does it a different way and a different sort of offense, and they're digging when everybody else is zagging, and who are the exact comps? And, you know, he keeps a very tight circle, and he's not getting any, he doesn't want any support or any sort of information or data from the NFLPA, and he's not working with a certified contract advisor. And it's not your normal dance.

It's not your normal negotiation. It's not, you know, guys like Eric DeCost and Pat Moriart, sitting down with an agent who they've done, you know, five contracts with, three contracts with, or whatever, over the years, and being able to really talk turkey. And, hey, you know, these are the warts. This is what we don't like. This has to get better. Like, when you don't have that traditional buffer there, you know, you still want this kid to be as confident as ever.

You want to give him a whole lot of money, but there's a give and take in a pool of this thing. And there's a reason why a lot of people, and a lot of different walks of life involving contract negotiation, and not just professional athletes, would like to have a third party there because, you know, that middleman to sort of a middle woman to deliver a message in a different way. You know, it's a little tricky,

and Lamar kind of, you know, he's going to do his own thing, and he doesn't seem to be obsessed about it. Now, the coach you get to the regular season again, and you start talking about real injury risk, I think that's when maybe the rubber will meet the road. But I just think it has more to do with some of the circumstances around this,

given the construct of their offense, what a, you know, the unique things he does, and then some of the more unique nuances to this negotiation that you don't see in a lot of $40 million a year franchise quarterback, you know, contract talks. Jason Lockham for joining us on the herd, Doug Gatley filling in for Colin. Sorry, I mean, you do your own show. You get to the natural reset.

Let's keep it in that division. Um, there's been, there, there's been some critique of Joe Burrow that he's just not confident in that knee. Now, I can actually speak at firsthand here because I just had knee surgery, the ACL surgery on Friday. And my surgeon, Dr. Andy Carrick, he's like, look, you'll be good to go in six months. He's like, but you don't feel like you're good to go until like nine months. He's like, that's just normal. Um, is there any freak out in Cincinnati over his lack of confidence in that leg? No, in fact, I think it's just good, honest conversation and dialogue between him and the coaching staff.

I spent the day there Thursday. Sorry, everything's burning out of Saturday. It was the best 11-on-11, you know, best any sort of team session he's had. It has been a slow start there. You know, he's not trying to fool people and pretend he's Superman and that he's got this. I mean, go back, and he had a more substantial surgery off things considered than Tom Brady, but go back and watch Brady, you know, up until around November the year after his ACL. balls were sailing.

He wasn't completely trusting his body and everything around him. The plant, you know, all the things you take for granted, the really fire through a throw, you've got to work to that point physically and mentally. And, you know, these guys have the kind of relationship where, you know, he thinks things are going pretty well. And, you know, he told me, look, they sat me down last week, and I didn't want to do it. I thought I was ready to have another great practice. And it turns out they were right.

And, you know, I went to them and said, look, I like what we're doing, but I need more simulated pressure. Like I need to kind of work through some of this stuff mentally. I don't want to get hit, obviously, but I need some drills that kind of simulates people around me in the pocket and, you know, simulates me potentially having to step over something or step around something. So I think they're at a really good place in terms of working through it.

That doesn't mean it's not going to be a process, and I would expect them to be changing some things. You know, I haven't talked to Brian Callahan, their offensive coordinator, haven't talked to Zach Taylor. I think some of the DNA that offense is going to change a little bit. I don't think you're going to see them going five-wide empty set on early downs nearly as much as they did the first half of the season when they were doing it as much probably more than anybody in the NFL. They want to get a little more play action going.

They want to run things through mixing a little bit more, and they know that they're going to have to point this season. He's not thinking anymore, but that doesn't happen overnight. That doesn't happen in July or August, and they're going to have to continue that dialogue and be smart about how they navigate this together. I get that the Hall of Fame, like the speeches have been just interminably long and gone on and on. Even Peyton Manning's line, Ray Lewis,

just wrapping up his speech now. But, I mean, talk about your all-time backfires. The guy you want to hear from for a half hour and hour is Peyton. He gets six minutes. Is there any reasonable takeaway from the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, other than, man, we might have cut Peyton off a little bit too soon. Yeah, I mean, look, I think this year was always going to be different

because you're having two classes back-to-back days. You want everybody to have their moment, but that's also, that's just up. That's a lot of speeches, a lot of human beings, you know, a lot to get through and to try to keep it moving but give everybody their due. I don't know what the perfect formula is. You know, I suspect Peyton Manning is, you know what I mean, at the end of the day, okay with it. And he obviously made the most of his opportunity. And, you know, he, that guy's, you know, a star and could be a star in so many different ways.

And I suspect this sort of quirky broadcast he's going to do with his brother will probably take off. So I think we'll hear plenty from Peyton, you know. It's just that's a, trying to do two classes on back-to-back days is difficult. but I'm glad that everybody from last year's class got their moment. And, you know, to hear Coach Cowers become a good friend of mine, be able to watch him, you know, have his chance to sort of address the football world in that setting. You know, and I'm sure for him, the weight of a year was more than worth it. All right, where are we with Deshaun Watson?

Because John McCain tweets out about an hour and seven minutes ago, and they'll ever play for the Texans ever again. Now he's at practice, kind of, you know, showing up so he doesn't get fined. But then I saw, I think it was our Breer saying, hey, they're still, you know, if they can't find a trade partner, thinking about working him into the fold of playing. But she got like, how do you trade a guy when he's got these lawsuits? Yeah. He don't want, like, what do you get, what's really going on in Houston? Nothing.

I mean, it's a hold in. They don't want to get him hurt. You know what I mean? Eviscerating whatever trade potential there is. He doesn't want to get hurt or do anything that puts him at risk. of screwing up an opportunity to maybe, you know, salvage his career somewhere else and salvage his reputation or whatever, depending on obviously the outcome of these very serious allegations against him from, you know, a large number of people.

And then do they really want him as their – you know, do – they don't want him as their starting quarterback right now. I mean, they don't want him to be playing in preseason games and leading the team coming running out of the tunnel. You know what I mean? and here's our face of the franchise guy. Wow, he's under this sort of investigation. So I think right now it's sort of a convenient way to get through it on a daily basis,

but everyone is still waiting for further clarity from the league. And I know they put a statement out a week ago or whatever it was, which, you know, he's an active player. But obviously the scope of this investigation and the severity of the allegations and the prospect at some point of news from the civil sector or the criminal sector or what have you, I just, I don't know that he's playing football for anybody week one. I mean, we're not that far away from it. And, you know, those investigations aren't worried about what's, you know,

what's determined by the middle of September. I mean, that's just an arbitrary date. So I don't know, Doug. I mean, nothing's really, everyone's sort of in a holding pattern now, and they're teams that have some interest. and they certainly want him out of there. But that's a difficult trade to make under normal circumstances this time of year, let alone with all that's hanging over him.

Yeah, I know it does sound, sounds crazy. What's San Francisco going to do? I ask you this because suddenly Jimmy Garoppolo, best football of his life, right? Like, okay, I get it. Are they going to try and do the Alex Smith and let him play it out? Or are they going to try and find a team that in Indy or somebody else who loses a quarterback early in the year to ship him to? I think the trade's happening anytime soon.

I think Trey Lance will eventually that they'll be sort of a hill supplant Garoppolo, but having Garoppolo around is still of some use to them. I don't know exactly when that's going to transpire. They seem to want to slow play it. I think there'll be packages for Lance from the giddy-up, but I think Kyle Shanahan will be judicious about how that handoff takes place, if, in fact, does take place, and I think Lance may force their hand, because I think he's going to be pretty good.

But they, you know, their record without, with quarterbacks other than Garoppolo is disastrous. I mean, we can coronate Channan and Lynch all we want, and I think they've done a lot of good things. But they need to win some football games, too. And they've been a lot of hand-picked who they thought, you know, whether it's Mullins or Beatherd or whatever, could be a guy, and they're not. and the bottom line is Garoppolo does know the system.

There's a level of comfort there, and you may need two quarterbacks to get where you want to go. So I don't see anything percolating there just yet. Could something happen in the course of the season? Maybe. I'd be really surprised if it happened, you know, before the trade deadline, if at all. Jason, will Cam Newton be the starting quarterback in New England for the Patriots? I don't know.

I would say TBD. There's, you know, we've got preseason games back, and as much as there's a lot of them, especially when you get to the fourth quarter, that might make you gouge your eyes out, it does serve a purpose. And it's a little different scenario when the other guys aren't wearing the same uniform that you're wearing.

So do I think if you look at a pie chart and who's going to have the most reps there by the end of the year, do I think it could be Jones? I do. But I don't know that if you look at the, you know, the timeshare week one, that it's drastically different. They know what Cam Newton provides them in the run game. They know the kind of run action and the things he opens up

that makes other people better in that regard. And I don't think they want to disband that, and they know that they don't get that with Mac Jones. So, you know, that's one that I'll be fascinated to see how much they're both sprinkled in there. But at the end of the year, who's going to have the most drop? back passes for the New England Patriots, I think it's probably Mac Jones. How many camps you've been to? Six.

Five or seven. Yeah. Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh. You Pittsburgh me twice. Oh. Cleveland, Cincinnati, Baltimore. Which team jumped out? This team has, seems to have more juice, more talent than the others.

Well, look, the rosters in Buffalo and Cleveland are no joke. and the bills have, they've gone from sort of a squatty, sort of athletic, you know, defensive front to a bunch of dudes. You know, six-six guys on the edge and Starloat to Layla back, you know, two gap in it in the middle, and Oliver can slide over to where he should be. And Tremaine Edmins, I think, is going to take off. I mean, I think their front sevens got a whole lot more jam to it than a year ago. and we know about the rest of that team. So they're very impressive in Cleveland.

I mean, the Cleveland Browns are big, they're fast, they're deep at Key Sitch. You know, critical spots. I mean, again, I can't predict the future which is David and Clowney from a health standpoint. But I think when he's available, he's going to be a thing for them. I think Miles Garrett is certainly going to be in contention for the defensive MVP. And so many moves in the secondary that a couple of them have to. Like, it's got to be better than a year ago. It can't just be living or dying with Denzel Ward

and making a play on the ball. So I'm super intrigued by them. I think they're in a really good place, and I'm bullish on the Browns and the bills. JLC, great stuff, man. Football is back. We love talking football with you. We appreciate you joining us.

Of course. So great. Jason's great to have him on. Also, don't forget to check out his local show that he does in Baltimore. So Jason's a valuable, valuable resource.

Someone who was quite valuable and maybe could be valuable again, but man, he is a tough pill to Swallow. Michael Thomas, Saints wide receiver. Just put out a message this morning in response to what was seemingly some interesting reporting that came out over the weekend. So he just put out on social media. They tried to damage your reputation. You saved theirs by not telling your side of the story. Now what does all this mean? Well, it's been a pretty interesting up and down year and a half or so for Michael Thomas. He got a huge contract extension back in 2019. He did a minor holdout in training camp, got that huge contract. Then last season in 2020, he struggled with injuries all year, a nagging ankle injury, which put him on the injured list throughout different times

throughout the season. Then at the end of the season, the Saints team and trainers were suggesting that he should be getting surgery as soon as possible so that that way, with a three to four month time recovery, he would be ready for the beginning of the season. However, Thomas sought an additional second opinion through other doctors besides just the Saints. This doctor gave him a more conservative approach that suggested that he avoids surgery.

Rest and rehab and it didn't work. Correct. But the big thing was they couldn't get a hold of him. That was the big thing. It was three months. They could not get a hold of them. of him. That's right. From the Times Picayune, quote, for unknown reasons

Thomas fell out of communication with the Saints. He did not return multiple calls over the next three months. Then Saints trainer Bo Lowry and wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson and head coach Sean Payton all tried to reach Thomas. None of their calls were taken or returned. Then shortly thereafter,

suddenly it pops up. Oh wow, Michael Thomas having surgery. Michael Thomas potentially not ready for the start of regular season. So what is his story that he's putting out there? By my side of the story. What side of the story is there? I couldn't tell you, but he's keeping it cryptic, perhaps very intentionally. We also know that last season, while Michael Thomas was struggling with an ankle injury, he was also set to return from that ankle injury partway through the season,

but then was suspended by the team after getting into a practice fight and perhaps being a little overtly aggressive with the coaching staff. Yeah, not good. I mean, like, and what's crazy about Thomas was, he, He was obviously undervalued in the draft going in the second round. So he carried that chip on his shoulder, made him pay and earned all that money that he was given because, I mean, he's a stud wide receiver. I mean, Drew Bree is not a great arm, obviously, as we know. And he still found ways to get open.

And, you know, can't guard Mike. Obviously, his Twitter handle. But people in the organization said his should be can't stand Mike, right? So whatever chip he carries on his shoulder, like there's a level of professionalism where your boss has to be able to get a hold of you. Absolutely. For three months, and you're injured? Come on, man.

Right, exactly. To your point, when it then is going to affect your availability to actually perform that job when it matters most by the start of the season, you absolutely have an obligation to keep your team informed of what's happening. And we'll wrap it up with this, Doug. I know you'll have more to say on Peyton Manning

and the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies from over the weekend. But Bill Belichick spoke. with Ben Volan of the Boston Globe about Peyton Manning. He said, quote, he is definitely the best quarterback I've coached against. There have been quarterbacks who called their own plays, but it was nowhere near the same as what he did. He basically called every play by adjusting and or changing the play once we saw what the defense was doing. Once he saw what the defense was doing, he excelled at using the cadence and recognizing blitzes. And more than any one single offensive player, he forced us to change and adapt defensive game plans. Yeah, now remember, he has not coached

against Tom Brady. He has called Tom Brady the greatest quarterback ever. I think what's interesting is that since Peyton Manning retired, and he retired as a Super Bowl champion, and those of us who, you know, were in sports radio, in sports television or remember, he wasn't very good as last year. But when Peyton retired, many people said that's the best quarterback ever.

Like, that's the actual best quarterback. That Brady had won more but been part of better teams, better organizations. And since he's retired, it's like we kind of even, it's like he's kind of getting the FAR of treatment. don't bring up Farr of in the top five quarterbacks of all time. He should be. We don't bring up Manning in the greatest quarterbacks of all time because Brady has seen this kind of second wind of success. And now Aaron Rogers has performed at such a magnificent level. I think it's fascinating. But I think Bill Belichick is, he's not lying with his words. And somebody's obviously

going to ask him after they take on the Buccaneers. All right, who's the greatest quarterback you've ever played against? And that puts him in an impossible position. But I guess he would say Brady. This is The Hurd on a Monday, a beautiful Monday here in Southern California. Hope you're well. Waning days of summer. Some of you send your kids off to school? Feels like it's early and earlier, isn't it? Get them out of the house, I guess, right? So, look, what happens is, and this is just the weird way in which, I don't know if your mind works this way, my mind works.

this way where it's like you see something and you're like oh i wish i had if it if it doesn't if you don't have sports radio or sports television the very next day it kind of goes off into the ether like friday night is one of these weird nights because even in the fall right because you know saturday's become about college football and sundays become about the nflb that things that happen on friday night kind of get caught up in the washing them by monday radio and Monday Sports TV, we almost forget about Friday night. Do you remember what happened Friday night? Rhyme's like, what'd you do Friday night?

What was your big plans Friday night? Well, I had dinner with my wife, my brother-in-law, and their grandmother. Did you watch the gold medal game? I watched parts of it, yes. It was sort of on in the background while we ate. Look, there's a lot of different takeaways for it. I will say that the international style of not necessarily just basketball, but the lack of timeouts, the lack of stoppages, the flow was way better.

Now, it's, you know, NBC doesn't normally cover basketball and the NBA. So it's, you know, you had some pieces there where you're like, I don't really, there's no, there's no, there's no, like Vince Carter's not normally part of a broadcasting team. Even your sideline reporter, you don't know. It's a lack of familiarity. So that part made it a little bit different. But the flow of the game was way more watchable the most NBA games.

On the other hand, like my biggest takeaway is I end up really liking this team. From really not liking how the team was playing and seemed disjointed and maybe a little bit dysfunctional as people were pushing back against Pop and his coaching, they make a couple adjustments. I mean, think about it. You know, Brad Beale doesn't,

Two guys don't make the trip. One's Brad Beal, right? And then they bring in three from the NBA finals in Chris Middleton and Devin Booker. Who else they bring in? Chris Miller. Oh, Devin Booker, Chris Middleton. Who else did they bring in?

Somebody else got brought in from the finals. Oh, Drew Holiday. And Drew Holiday was probably the second most impressive, second most like if there's an MVP 2.0, that would have been Drew Holiday. Obviously, Kevin Durant had a breakthrough tournament. What's weird about Durant is, if you go back and look on the previous two Olympic teams he was on, he was the go-to guy then too. And you can't fool players, right? They know even like Devin Booker's been an alpha, go-to guy for the Phoenix Suns.

Chris Middleton is really the score with the Milwaukee Bucks. You know, you kind of go back through their roster and Damian Lillard is a big time. Lillard struggled, but all of them seem to realize. Kevin Durant's our best player, which signifies Kevin Durant, establishing himself as the best player in the world, right? But I end up liking this team and look, the pieces aren't as good or as talented or as maybe well respected, top to bottom as other teams, but they became a legit team. They beat legit teams.

They got through adversity. Heck, they were down 15 to Australia and end up winning by 19. I like this team better than previous incarnations as a team. How much longer will Jimmy B. The quarterback? Find out next in The Hurt. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite.
