I get two, just two.

July every year, I lay it out, entire play. out format, every division. And two days, I just tweak, tweak, tweak, tweak, tweak. And I have, let me count real quickly, Joy. Hold on. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten tweaks. Wow. That's a lot of tweaking.

Well, you know what? I feel like your first tweak usually is pretty extensive. And then the last one, the final one is almost an injury one. Right. Like if somebody gets hurt. Yes. Yeah. So it's great to have you in today.

You look so summery and look so happy and it is it is. So I, you know, Joy, we've talked about this. When a story gets out, it only gets out for one reason, be it politics, sports, business. It gets out for a reason. Somebody wants it out. There's been a lot of stories that you read a book about later and you're like, I didn't hear about that because nobody wanted the story to be leaked. All right. So people can keep secrets, right?

We all know. You have something in your life that you'll never let out. I've got a couple. Joy is perfect, so she didn't have any. But the point is, we all have secrets we don't let out. So when stuff gets out, somebody wanted it out. Sources in New England saying there's a level of frustration internally with Cam Newton. It is open the window for Mack Jones.

they want that out there. New England wants that out there. You know why New England wants it out there? Because when they move off Cam, hey, we gave them a chance. COVID last year, COVID situation this year. A little protection, little insurance. So when they move off Cam,

players in the locker room, players around the league know, well, I mean, two different times. times with COVID. He caught it. Now he's going to miss practice. That gets out because somebody wants him. And by the way, you can blame whoever you want. I'm not into the blame game, but this stuff doesn't happen to Russell Wilson. It doesn't happen to Brady. It didn't happen to Mahomes. We've all had a friend that struggles to get out of their own way. Sometimes Cam struggles

to get out of his own way. And I've been critical of Cam for years. I've said, I like my presidents to be presidential, like my quarterbacks to be quarterbackial. grownups, adult, focused, self-reliant, self-motivated, coachable. There's certain traits, forget all the athletic stuff. There's just certain traits I'm looking for. My president and my quarterbacks. And sometimes Cam's not always great with those. And that's led to eroding mechanics, lack of efficiency, you know, inconsistent production, week to week, half to half.

You don't know what they get. And here's the issue. You know how I do that segment every Monday called Colin Wright, Colin Wrong? I think the rightest take I've ever had is that Cam and Russell Westbrook would age poorly and age quickly. Cam is now 32. He feels like he's inches from out of the league. Russell Wilson's 32. And I feel like he just entered his prime.

Russell Wilson has better quarterback-eeled traits. maturity, constantly working on mechanics, Uber focused. By the way, Russell Westbrook, 32. Fourth team, fourth year. Steph Curry 33. Just signed a max contract. And there was an argument to me made. He should have been the most valuable player.

How you age depends a lot on your traits. Brady has aged gracefully. Breeze aged gracefully. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar aged gracefully. Greg Maddox, never reliant on just sheer talent. He was a professional pitcher painting the corners. Greg Maddox aged gracefully. Ray Allen's a basketball player.

Just kept working on his skills. Like, legendarily the best cardio performer in the league Ray. Allen, like could just run for miles. He kept tweaking and tweaking and tweaking his game, modernizing his game. And so when Westbrook and Cam were in their athletic, hyper-athletic prime, they just blow through their inefficiencies. I mean, there'd be nights with Westbrook here like, God, he can't shoot. He finished with 36.

How's that possible? Because he was Westbrook. He was the best athlete in the league. There would be games with Cam. You're like he completed 52% of his throws. How did he win? because he was Cam, he was 6,6, he'd run over people, he had 142 yards rushing. But as they have aged and dipped athletically, now you just get their inefficiency.

That's all you get. They can't just blow through it. That's why LeBron has been so smart about this. LeBron realized, after about year seven, year eight, I'm going to get a jumper. I don't want to go to the rim all the time. And LeBron has brilliantly aged. He's just added dimensions to his game. game. That's why he, LeBron is aging well as his body is, you know, kind of falling apart now.

Like, LeBron gets hurt. But he is still a brilliant basketball player because passing never erodes. Ball handling doesn't erode. Leadership doesn't erode. Mechanics don't have to erode. Shooting doesn't have to erode. I mean, Dan Marino could still grab a football and sling it 45 yards. What erodes is you're vertical, your speed, your athleticism. your ability to get hurt and be back on the field in a week. And so this story is out because somebody wants it out. And I'm not here to blame anybody, but Cam has had a career and not getting out of his own way sometimes. Westbrook, similarly, hyperathletic, can't get out of his way sometime.

And I look at this story with Cam and it's out there for a reason. They want it out there. And Mac Jones, listen, success in life is often born of opportunities. Mac Jones may have just gotten a terrific opportunity with the best coach, arguably the best offensive coordinator, a top three offensive line, a really good running game, and a top 10 defense. Born of opportunities, maybe Mac and Cheese got one.

All right, so I watched Jacksonville last night. What was emitting from my television was pretty honestly the worst football team in the league, the worst roster. Jacksonville's awful. And I know Urban Meyer and I like him, but the offensive line is awful. The defensive line is awful. They don't have a single defensive star. Miles Jack is good, not elite.

They've got some wide receiver running back talent that I'm interested in, but this league is not about perimeter stuff. The reason the Cleveland Browns are good this year, their offensive line's great and they have Miles Garrett. OBJ will not be as important as that offensive line, and you can't name four of them. The Jags are trying to mesh their college offense. with Urban Meyer and their pro offense

and they didn't build the best offensive staff. Darrell Beville and Brian Schottenheimer are bounce around the NFL guys that have been fired multiple times. First thing I would do, I would trade Gardner Minshew tomorrow and get a starter on the offensive line or Trevor

Lawrence is going to be in big trouble. Listen, there are two types of rebuilds in sports. There's the long rebuild. And then there's the short rebuild. And I'll give you Miami is a short rebuild. Why is Miami a short rebuild? Because they had commodities to sell. Minka Fitzpatrick.

Hey, we're going to move him and get a bunch of picks. Laramie Tunzel, offensive lineman. Hey, Bill O'Brien, I got a deal for you. Move him. Get a bunch of picks. Say what you want about Ryan Tannihill. He's a B quarterback, B plus quarterback. So they had commodities to move. And let's be honest. Brian Flores appears to be unbelievable. He and Greer, the GM, are just doing an unbelievable bang-up job. They've hit on virtually everybody. But they had commodities to move.

Jacksonville doesn't. They don't have, yeah, they have a commodity. It's called Trevor Lawrence. So this is a long rebuild. You know, I always say you've got to give a GM and a coach two free agency periods and two drafts. I think Urban Meyer needs that to get. in that 500, barely above 500 space. That's what I think you're looking at. They don't have anybody they can move to get pieces. So they're going to have to rely on hitting on like five draft

picks, 10 players over the next two years. Hey, as good as Urban Meyer. Now Pete Carroll did that, college to pros. Remember Pete came out, he was grabbing guys in the fifth and sixth round that were stars. And I think Urban's got that potential. J2Afelly, fourth round defensive linemen last year. Multiple GMs told me that was as good a pick as you're going to get in the fourth round. So he has the ability to do it. Now, the Jags and Urban have two advantages. Number one, they play Houston twice. There's two wins, probably.

And they do have the easiest schedule, fourth place schedule in the league. And it's a bad division. And their second thing is Trevor Lawrence is really good. It's a really good player. Big, tall arm, you can see it. But Urban in college, remember, had very quick turnarounds. This is going to come down to Urban Meyer. How patient is he?

At Utah, he did not. take over a dumpster fire. They were five and six next year, 10 and two. Utah, you know, Utah's won 12 of its last 13 bowl games. Utah's a fine program. Florida was seven and four. They were not a dumpster fire. He turned them in a nine and three. Ohio State was six and seven, but it's Ohio state. They've always got 20 NFL guys on the roster. They were 12 and oh. So these are Utah, Florida, Ohio State's a top three program. Florida's a top 10 program and Utah's a top 20, 25 program. Those were not messes. This is a mess.

This is an absolute mess. Worst brand in the league, worse facilities arguably in the league, although they're trying to build those, and the worst roster in the NFL. And I don't think his offensive coaching hires, I mean, listen, he's a college coach, moved into the NFL,

Daryl Bevel, Brian Schottenheimer. And they bounced around the league a lot. I don't know him personally, but guys have been bouncing around six or seven teams. you know, Urban Meyer after the game knows offensively they're boring and not very good.

We're not balanced right now and when you get you know you get stuffed on. We're too many second off off schedule plays in the first half, you know, three threes and out other than that one first down. So that and then the red zone today, you know, Trevor did a nice job on that two-minute drill and maybe it'll pound it in there.

So I got to get our offense line back and playing better, you know, and run the ball. I think they'll win a handful of games. I would say about five or six because they're in a weak division and because they play Houston twice. But this is going to be a slow rebuild. This is going to be a long one. Miami had three really nice pieces. You can move. And by the way, not only did they move Laramie Tunzel, but, you know, they got a lot for it.

So Urban needs to find the weak spots in the NFL get on the phone, move the. Gardner Minchew and get that offensive line better fast. All right, good stuff today. 45 minutes from now, my first amendment, listen. We've had 25, 26 amendments to our Constitution. I'm asking for two, the first one today in 45 minutes. So the NFL, there was an agent survey. 33 NFL agents were anonymously interviewed and asked a series of questions, one of which is which team had the best off season.

The Buccaneers got 11 votes. Cleveland was second with four votes. I strongly agree. I love what Cleveland did. I thought their draft was okay. I thought their free agency moves were really, really smart. And not that their draft was bad. They got a linebacker from Notre Dame who I like,

and they need a line. That's kind of their weakest unit. So it is interesting, though, many of you, and this hurts, I try not to take it personally, but this hurts. You think I don't like Baker Mayfield. Now he drives me nuts, but he says, talented. I think if you go back and look last year, I always talk about where you land matters. So Baker Mayfield entered the NFL with nothing but chaos, a general manager with a big ego,

coaches over their skis. If you go to the last nine games of last year, Baker Mayfield had one pick. Look it up. He's pretty good. Why? Because he had a grown-up. And you have to harness Baker. Baker's got a little James Winston. He gets real loose. He gets real loose. He gets real. loose, real gun slingery, real 1980 quarterback. It's kind of his style. He's a walk-on. He's got a lot of hoodspah. But at the end of last year, Baker was a really good player because Stavansky said, I'm going to pull back about seven throws a game. You know when you take little kids bowling and you put those bumper things in the, so there's no gutters and you kind of, you make sure the balls kind of, Stephansky did that with Baker. I'm going to get you, I'm going to get those four

or five really bad throws off and we're going to keep you in the fairway here. And Baker was terrific. But it does show you the reluctance that people have with Cleveland that they opened as a nine and a half win team in Vegas. Now, I told you, I bet it the first day. I think they're an 11, 12 win team potentially. Vegas experts, they all love Baker, right? Nine and a half wins. It's been bet up to 10 and a half. But the organization similarly, unlike Buffalo or Kansas City with their young quarterbacks,

wants to see him play this year. Why? He was great at the end of last year. So it's interesting, Vegas's reluctance and the organization's reluctance. It's Baker. There's no other reason. Folks, they're running backs. Elite.

O-line, elite. Receiver, elite. Tide-end, elite. I think they're secondary talents, elite. I mean, offensively, they don't have a single grouping that isn't elite. It is the best running back tandem, the best offensive line. Now, I do think if Miles Garrett got hurt, I would question the effectiveness of their D-line, but he doesn't have a history of getting hurt much, and he's great.

To me, he's the best pass rusher in football. He and T.J. Watt. So, but look at their schedule. It's amazing. I still think everybody is reluctant for Cleveland. Look at this schedule. Six games they're going to face, in my opinion, last place rosters. Houston, Arizona, Cincinnati, Detroit, Las Vegas, and Cincinnati.

Three other games, they're going to face what I perceive as third place rosters, Chicago, Denver, New England. nine of the 17 games, they will have a significantly better roster, many of those at home. And yet the overrunners, 10 and a half, and had to be bet up by the sharps. So, you know, this season does come down to, do you trust that guy in the picture? It's not a criticism. I think he's going to have a very strong year. I do not believe he's an MVP candidate because I don't think Stefansky, number one, he's not going to trail that much.

Cleveland's going to ball control people to death. They're going to have the lead in most of their games and just kill the clock and run and eat the clock. So he's not going to be trailing and get garbage passing yards in the fourth quarter. Last year, despite playing very well down the stretch, I think he finished for like 3,500 yards. He'll probably be about 4,100, 4,200. And again, not that they're going to limit him, they're not going to need to throw the football a ton, in my opinion, because their offensive line and running game and their coaching right now is so effective, they will lead a lot of their games.

But it is interesting that there still is that reluctance. How many articles have you read in the offseason where people have said this? Cleveland's got the second best roster in the AFC. And I believe that to be true. So why are they at 10 and a half? Why aren't they at 12? Why aren't they at 12 and a half? So I can't wait to watch it.

I still think there's this reluctance. about Cleveland, and ironically, I don't have it. My only question is, Miles Garrett stays healthy. And again, I'm not saying it gets hurt. I just, I think they got rid of Sheldon Richardson and the offense, defensive line, who I think has always been underrated. I think they're a little Miles Garrett dependent on that D-line. But again, if you're going to be dependent on somebody, he would be the guy in the NFL.

I'd be, I'd be Aaron Donald to him. Those are the guys I'd be dependent on. So, but it's, I still sense this like, well, I don't know. No, in 30 minutes, I will unveil 35 minutes. My amendment, my first amendment, I think people in Ohio will be very satisfied. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news.

This is the herd line news. Well, James Winston made a strong case to be the Saints starting quarterback last night. He completed 9 of 10 passes for 123 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first quarter against the Jags. And after the game, he spoke about how great it. was to get his first start with the team. I haven't started a football game in so long, man. So I was just, I was so excited to just get an opportunity to start and lead the pack, man. It was exciting.

And the rhythm was great. Office line was phenomenal. And we had guys like Queds making plays all night, man. You got to love that. Taysam Hill was 11 for 20 with 138 yards and a touchdown. Sean Payton declined to make any official announcements after the game or give a timetable on when he was going to make his decision between. James and Taysam. I've always felt like

James was going to win this quarterback competition. Well, he throws a really, I mean, just watch the highlights for, he throws a beautiful NFL ball. He throws a, it was a number one pick for a reason. He throws a beautiful football. He was the number one pick, and he has 70 career starts as a quarterback in six seasons. Taysom has four. I mean, look at this throw. It's perfect.

He throws a beautiful football. His, his issues have been judgment, not talent. He's big. He can move a little bit. Yeah, he's done 85 interceptions in his career. We know what he's capable of when it comes to turning the ball over. I felt like this was the only true quarterback competition in the league, like where they really needed to evaluate who they were going to have as their starter.

That's a perfect throw. But he just has so much more experience as the every down starter. And talent. I mean, I like Taysam Hill. But if you put them in a quarterback competition throwing, you know, when the NFL does that thing where they have that quarterback thing where they have tires and moving target. I always love watching that.

James throws the ball like a number one pick. That's why, I mean, I think he was a baseball player at one point. James is a really talented player in the NFL. And Tassum is a talented player as well, but I don't think he's in every down starting quarterback. It doesn't mean that he doesn't still have extreme value in this offense and that he might not play significant time if things start to unravel, but I just think that this is James' job.

Yeah, James's issue is you're not going to have Michael Thomas for a while, which is going to limit his ability to, I mean, it really is. Yeah, no, it's a huge loss for them. Like, especially when you're, when you are moving on from someone like Drew Breeze, having Michael Thomas out there would have been a huge advantage for either of these guys, no matter who won the quarterback competition. So, yes, like, that's a huge loss. But James has shown the ability to have a lot of production. And I think he will, similar to what you were just talking about with Baker, be dialed back a little bit because you've seen. what's happened when you just let him go. And Sean Payton knows what he's doing.

Listen, anybody have kids? Some you can trust with $20. Some got to keep your eye on. There are quarterbacks whose style, Fav was like that. Fav's the best ever at this, the gunslinger thing. Right.

Like Fav just kind of had his own playbook. Now, Brett was so talented, he just kind of overcame it. But Baker and James have a little bit of that. They get loose really fast. And we all need coaches. You just got a Stefansky just take about four of those throws out of the ad lib category into the here's the play, run the play category.

Well, because certain quarterbacks can ad lib, but they also process the risk of certain throws and they have the experience to know that while I am changing the play up and I am ad living, I'm still not going to make that throw because it's dangerous or they can read the defense better. But I also think the Brett Farves era that was a little bit more accepted. Thank you. We live in a world of efficiency and numbers. Well, that's all analytics is.

And analytics. And if you continuously turn the ball over, they can calculate how many points that's turning into for the other team. And eventually it becomes not worth the reward. The game is much more efficient. Joe Neiman threw more picks than touchdowns. And he was a star. Right.

No, the game has changed. Farve through, I think Farve's the all-time leader in picks. He was a star. The game's changed. I always said Aaron Rogers and Far, the difference is Aaron has more discretion to let go with the football. So I've always been an Aaron guy over a Fav guy, although Brett's a first bout hall famer.

But Brett worked in the 80s, 90s. Aaron works now because he's just, Aaron just doesn't let go about twice a game where Favre would. Both have the same arm strength. But to your point, analytics has changed everything. You just have to be more efficient. You do. So the Cowboys have made it clear that they fully expect Dak Prescott to be able to play in the season opener against the Bucks. He's not been a full participant in practice since straining his shoulder in an effort to be cautious with his recovery, but the team will continue to ramp up his throwing volume in practice this week.

And Mike McCarthy says he feels good about the progress that DAC is making. I don't feel good about this situation for the Cowboys. It's not that I don't trust that DAC is going to be out there week one. I do. I just am aware that there's an extra game this season and that generally when a player goes into a season injured, there's no time for recovery. I mean, guys talk about it all the time. You go into a season injured, you're going to leave the season injured.

By the way, let me throw this at you. They call Jacksonville. I'm going to do this right now. They get Gardner Minshu as a backup. The Cowboys have an extra linebacker now by drafting Micah Parsons. The Jags get a linebacker. Or not, now, you're not going to get a great offensive lineman, but do the Cowboys have an extra own lineman the Jags could get,

or a linebacker, which they need enough. one. Because I, to me, the idea of going into a season without an elite backup, this is a winnable division. Even if I said DAC misses five weeks, it's still a winnable division if you have a competent backup. So to me, if I'm Urban Meyer, I'm like in a week or whenever you want to do it, Gardner Minshue, but you've got to give us a starter, an athletic starter, or an, it doesn't have to be a great offensive lineman. Because Gardner's not a good. great quarterback, but I just made a deal right there on the air. I'm very excited. I mean, I don't know why they aren't on the phone. Maybe they are, and they're just not willing to give up enough to get one,

but I think that they maybe just don't want us to panic. Like, that's what that whole weird tweet was about. And that's what all the vagueness about when he's going to be like, he's going to be ready week one, but we're still not, he's still not throwing in practice yet. Like, the vagueness behind all this makes me feel like they're just trying to make it seem like he's not actually injured. Like it would make sense for you to get a competent backup. Even if DAC wasn't injured, look at your backup quarterback situation and look around the league at teams that do have competent backups. There is a little bit less anxiety about if something happens to your starter for a week or two. And in a now extended season, you want to be healthy going into the playoffs if that's what you're aiming to do this year.

So Andy Reid takes an old school approach in the preseason, making sure his starters get plenty of playing time. Other coaches take a different approach. They sit their star quarterbacks for the entire preseason. But Reed explained why he's been giving them homes a significant amount of reps. Well, I think it's good for Pat, but I also think it's good for the offensive line. And Pat to see kind of how that's going to work and get a feel for him, for them to get a feel for him. And we've got two veterans on the left side. All five of them are new.

So we need to, you need to play. and that this gives us that opportunity. You know what I love about Kansas City? They're arguably the best football team in the world under the radar all offseason. A couple of offensive lining signing.

Never hear from a home. He's got a new shoe. Andy Reid's quiet. No owner's meddling has a radio show. The GM, nobody knows what he looks like. For all their star power, Kansas City makes no noise. Everybody's secure in themselves.

They're not outside of Mahomes getting a new shoe. Have we talked chiefs in four months? Well, the offense, Joe Tooney signing was big. I mean, if you're a well-run organization of any business and you have a good culture where people feel, like you said, secure in what they do, they feel like they have opportunities, they feel supported, and they can see that the way things are run leads to winning, you generally have less noise.

You generally have less drama. It's organizations that people feel like they have to fight for first place and they've got to kind of play this sneaky game to get ahead and they're not really sure where they stand with people that you tend to have more drama. Like that's how it works. That's what good cultures do. They support from within.

And it starts at the top and they are very well run, which is why I don't question what Andy Reid is doing here. Some guys don't start anybody in Sean McVeigh. And that works for them. And Andy Reid clearly feels differently. And he makes a good point in this situation because they do have a completely new offensive line, which is a rhythm unit. Yes.

And who do they need to be in sync with? Patrick Mahomes. So there is a value to him being out there. Preseason isn't always for they need to get in playing shape or they need to get on the same page with their receivers or they need to learn new schemes. Sometimes it is stuff like this where you need to implement and get everyone on the same page, and you can't do that in practice and training camp. You need game speed to get the offensive line up and humming. And Mahomes played in three of the four preseason games in 2019.

So this is not new for the Chiefs. Yeah. It is funny now. We just view preseason differently. Like when starters start, we're like what's going on, it's like a lot of these old school coaches, like Andy. They always did. Well, Mike Tomlin, Ron Rivera, and Belichick have been four coaches, Bruce Ariens. They want to play some of their starters. That's the culture they grew up in. Joy with the news. So I said this, not a lot of commodities with Jacksonville. Trevor Lawrence, Miles Jack the linebacker. They do have a couple of defensive linemen they took early last year that got, they have some juice. I suggested move Gardner Minshu. Try to get something. Let's start with this. When you look at that roster, is this a four-year rebuild? I mean, what do you see when you see Jacksonville last night?

Oh, I mean, I think it's, you know, three years they should be in the postseason. I think that's the mindset they need to have. They've got a lot of young players in this roster that just, need to step up and have an opportunity to play, and certainly it starts with Trevor Lawrence. But they do have a younger offensive line, you know, Joanne Taylor, you know, Walker Little. We're going to see what these guys can do, especially in that offensive to be able to protect Trevor Lawrence to give him a little bit more time so he can process and get that ball out of his hands quicker.

You got Josh Allen, the pass washer that you like. There are pieces here within Jacksonville that you keep sitting there going. They can make steps. They can take strides as an organization and grow, but I still think it's a two to three-year process. more on the three-year window for this football team. So a Gardner Minshue right now is good in terms of value. It certainly allows you to be flexible with your football team.

But he's hard to get rid of Colin because he is so cheap and he is a good guy and a good teammate that if something happened at Jacksonville, you kind of still want him to be there. Yeah. It's interesting. Urban, we don't talk Jags football much, but he's a college coach and had to assemble an NFL staff. And I don't love his offensive staff.

I don't. He's got guys that have banged around the league forever. What do you make, forget their roster? Is it a good staff? Well, I think it's tricky, right? You got Daryl, who's the offensive coordinator, who's obviously spent a lot of time in Seattle. We heard a lot of noise coming out of Seattle with him,

and Russell got frustrated. He goes to Detroit for a couple of years, and now he's landed in Jacksonville. My head scratched, because when I watched the first play of Trevor Lawrence's preseason career, he went four wives with a back next to him, basically an empty backdill saying, come get me. And then what did the defense do? they went and sacked Trevor Lawrence.

Like, that's not the time to be creative. The next play, he throws a little bubble, a quick wide receiver screen, and you're like, why would that have the first play? So even when, you know, Daryl Bebble is trying to be a little creative, it's not working out. So I just, I liked the fact that, look, Trevor Lawrence has not had a great preseason. He hasn't had a terrible one. But he needs to have a little bit more time in that pocket to process the information

and get the ball out. And we're going to need to see that this next week. So Cam Newton had no market when New England picked him up for basically the league minimum. Now, he had an injury, but Sam Bradford had an injury or six, and he had a bigger market that Cam Newton did, and I think a lot of it is Cam's inefficiency, his mechanics. There's always been this sense he's like, kind of committed, sort of committed, not all the way in. And I look at this situation. It's the second time he's had a COVID-itch situation and had to miss either a game or practices. And when Belichick, and then Belichick said today, it opened

things up for Mac Jones, I just thought to myself, is this the end of Matt? Is this the end of Cam? What do you make of their quarterback situation now? Well, I think Belichick's seen a lot of Mac Jones to be very confident that they could turn the ball over to him. And so I think he wants Cam just to make sure he's taken care of just the most minuscule objects. Look, for Belichick to bring back Cam Newton speaks volumes to me about where he saw Cam Newton in terms of a competitor and a worker. And Cam has not done anything to me in the preseason to lose the starting job. Mac Jones is played very much well enough to have the starting job. But I think it's Cam Newton's job to lose.

And yes, he's going to miss five days of practice. And that's not great timing. But I think it's going to be five great days for Mack Jones because he's obviously the heir apparent, looks very comfortable in what they're asking to do. And yes, they run two different defense or offenses when they're both in there a little bit more, RPO with Cam, as you can imagine. But I think Cam Newton still is starting quarterback there because Belichick has stuck with him this long and he hasn't done anything to sit there and say, you're not the starter

from what he's performed on the football field. So I had dinner last night with a former NFL quarterback, and we got into this discussion. As we were walking to the restaurant, I said, a quarterback, there's three things that will kill a quarterback's confidence. An injury, the coach loses faith in you, and they draft your replacement. Jimmy Garoppolo checks all three boxes. And I watched him against the Chargers, Mark, and I was like, he really forced it. He didn't look terribly comfortable. And that's with Kyle Shanahan, and they played some starters.

and I you know Mark you were in this league a long time Garoppolo just may not like I kind of watched him and I thought well course the injury the coach took the ball away from him a year ago on that playoff run they draft his replacement how long before Trey Lance starts in your opinion I think it's depending on how the 49ers start the season you can see Trey Lance on the football field by week four

I think they're going to give Jimmy at least the first month of the season or at least the first three games to kind of see what he can do with this offense, with the consistency. Because Trey Lance, as you can know, in that first preseason game, he made the one beautiful throw. But he didn't play great. He played a little bit better this last week. But he still clearly needs a lot of football growth and acumen to grow into seeing

what he wants to become or can become in the national football league. I like the way the ball pops out of his hand. You've got to like a lot of things about him. But I think this is Kyle and John Lynch's plan from the beginning is let's ease him in. And as a former GM, there's a way to play this game. because if Jimmy struggles, the fans are going to start begging for Trey Lance. Right? They're just going to beg for him. And so when he goes in because the fans have been wanting him, they're going to be more patient with him.

They're going to be like, oh, well, you know, he's just a rookie. You know, Jimmy was playing bad. They kind of had to rush him in. But let's be more patient. Other way it can go is, hey, put the rookie in right away. And he struggles with people like, ah, you drafted a bust. You know, why did we not just start with Jimmy Groplo? So there's a game being played behind the game here. And I think that's why Jimmy Gropo stays.

If you can win games, just hold on to the third. starter. Week four, you could see Tray Lance. So, you know, Justin Fields and Zach Wilson and Mack Jones have all looked, you know, very, very good. And, you know, they're all talented. You wouldn't go top 15 picks if you weren't talented. But there's a cultural change here. Sean McVeigh, a few years ago, said, I'm not playing starters. And they started eight and no. It clearly didn't affect the overall start for the Rams. And now people have piggybacked. This is a copycat, league, 75% of these coaches, I mean, forget starters. They get rid of their backups by the beginning of the second quarter. So Mark, as a former GM, I'm looking at Zach Wilson and Justin

Field. And I'm like, what can I take from any of this stuff? They haven't faced a starter. What do you make of Zach Wilson start? What do you make of Justin Field so far? Yeah, I think Zach Wilson's played very, very well. I've been very excited about the way the ball is just coming out of his hands. He's got that quick release. And the thing, that I think that really put Joe Douglas, the general manager there, over the top over Sam Darnel, was the fact that he was so accurate in college. And I think, you know, he just threw, when they say throw guys open, he knew where to place the ball. And he's doing that at the Jets right now. And I think that's what really separates him from anybody else. And that's why he's having, I think, the best

preseason of all the rookie quarterbacks. And I know it's the Jets. And I know they're not playing starters. But, you know, this, I think, solidifies what I think you'll see out of Zach over time. And even in his rookie campaign, I just feel like this guy has all the attributes. in a big market and is doing very well with it. So I'm encouraged by the way he's playing. I think Justin Fields certainly is a little bit more scattered with the ball as I've watched him so far. He certainly has the athleticism be able to move around and create time with his legs

and everything. And he's made some nice throws. It's not like I don't take anything away. But I think the Andy Dalton, the comfort there, it's just a little bit easier. Zach Wilson, for me, the best quarterback we've seen all preseason of the rookies. He's the easy day one starter. And I understand why Coach Nagy has decided we're going with Andy Dalton, let Justin Fields learn a little bit behind him as well.

So I have a theory, and we got a minute and a half, two minutes left that Ariens and Brady have been tough publicly on this team because they inherited guys who had lost that were talented, great roster talented. They win and they're both deathly afraid of everybody pulling back and being content. So Brady's throwing helmets, Aryan's dog cussing his players. And I can see, it feels like to me this was a game. game plan that Bruce and Tom sat down and said, we got to be on these guys in preseason. You know Tampa well. Am I reaching here? Do you sense that too?

No, I absolutely sense that. Tom knows how hard it is to try to repeat. He's been there before and he can feel energy quickly. I mean, he's been around so many locker rooms, so many players. And there is some veterans there, but there's a lot of youth on that football team too, especially when you think about the secondary or some of the players on the defensive side, that just need to make sure they stay hungry and how's the best, what's the best way to look at it? look at your leader and see how he's acting. So I do think this is somewhat of a situation where there's a lot of frustration. The Bucks haven't played great in the preseason.

It's okay. It's got the regular season coming. But I think that this absolutely is something that Tom Brady is trying to instill in them that we haven't made it, that we're going to be picked on and that we're going to be a team that's going to be hard to get back because he knows there were games last year, especially even you think about the Green Bay game for the championship, that if they don't give up that touchdown, maybe that thing goes differently. So everybody knows how close you are to getting it.
