and however you may be listening. Not only do we have the weather, our baseball team never loses a game. Dodgers keep rolling. I The word, Joy Taylor, is joining me. Fox Sports Radio, I Heart Radio, FS1. Oh, I, you know, out here, Joy, as you know, you and I have always been sort of middle-class kids.

We got chip on our shoulder. You do, I do. And I think in Los Angeles, whereas a lot of stars, the weather's always good, you got to keep that chip on your shoulder. Oh, yeah, you got to keep the edge. You can get into a very comfortable lifestyle out here very quickly. Very comfortable. A lot of chia seeds and tofu out here. My wife is a Midwest girl.

When I met her, she liked beef stew. We move out to L.A. She's a vegan. It happens very quickly. That's right. So I watched hard knocks last night. They had a three-minute drone shot going through the Cowboys facility. And the wait room at a hotel.

They got practice fields. Oh, I'd never see. It was a palace. I've never seen anything like it. And then I thought, yeah, I have. It's called a country club. This is why the Cowboys are a soft football organization. There's an old saying by the late great Marvin Hagler,

one of the all-time great boxers after he got rich. It's hard to get up at five in the morning to do road work. when you slept in silk pajamas. Fidelity investments says 88% of millionaires did not inherit their wealth. They were self-made. I don't have many rich friends, but the ones I do all have this funny thing, all of them.

They still live, feel, talk like middle class people or below, and they're all rich. They buy use cars sometimes. They worry about stuff that's ridiculous. I'm like, you've got money. They've all got this. I didn't grow up with it. The fear of going back.

Dallas Cowboys are a country club. Oh, let's add this, that Jerry Jones regularly overpays for good players. You know who doesn't? New England never does. Baltimore never does. Green Bay never does. You know, those three teams that win a lot of playoff games. Joy and I always joke about this.

New England was a 20-year dynasty and they always had this we became a regular joke on the show. Every week it was like, nobody respects us. The hell are you talking about? They were a 20-year dynasty and Belichick always made them feel like

we cannot afford anything more than the Marriott. The Dallas Cowboys, they're trust fund kids. They've never stated anything in the last 25 years that's not a Rich Carlton. When I used to cover Mike Tyson years ago in Vegas, I never forget this. Remember when Mike Tyson would come out with a ripped shirt? He was the richest boxer on the planet, black trunks.

He used to work out in Vegas. I covered him at Johnny Toko's ringside gym, a late great trainer. He's passed away. Dark dingy smelled like a house with 40 cats in it. And top rank gym was all shiny across the way. Tyson didn't want to work out there. Tyson wanted to work out at Johnny Toko's ringside gym. Why?

Because it felt like a street fight. It got him. It felt like being on a bad street where he grew up and you had to be on edge. He could have worked out at Caesars, at the Mirage. He didn't like to. He wanted to work out at that dark, damp Johnny Toko's gym. And he wore a rip shirt because the psychology for Mike was, I'm going to war.

Not wearing silk pajamas to bed. I'm going to what he dressed in, the music he listened to, where he trained the psychology of going into the octagon, going into the ring. Connor McGregor's not nearly as good a fighter since he got rich selling his whiskey company. He doesn't put in the time. Don't want to take those punches quite as much. Let me tap out. I'm done.

Wasn't like that four years ago. still good, not great. I watched that drone for the Dallas Cowboys, and I'm like, you've got to be kidding me. Shiny and beautiful and wonderful, and they're overpaying all their players. Good players now get great contracts. Since Barry Switzer left in the mid-90s,

25 years ago, they have three playoff wins. Mark Sanchez, in the last 15 years, has more playoff wins than the Cowboys have in 25 years. Nick Foles has. more playoff wins in 10 years than the Cowboys have in 25. Buffalo had two wins last year. Since 2000, that's 21 years. 12 of 16 teams in the NFC have made the Super Bowl.

Four haven't. Dallas is one of them. Detroit's another one. So when I watched that drone, I thought this is an organization that is Jerry's buying his yacht. Jerry is enjoying his wealth, good for him. but keep it away from the players. That facility is a country club. It's just, folks, it's not the same.

The Patriots traded Sony Michelle running back to the Rams. And we've been talking about this, Joy, for two weeks. they have to get another running back. And both teams got what they wanted.

The Rams wanted a shifty running back for Sean McVeigh's system. And New England, which is not in a Super Bowl window, in my opinion, is accumulating picks. That's what they do. And they are loaded at running back. We've noted that several times. Fans get paralyzed. This is really funny by who won the trade. Doesn't matter what sport it is.

Who won the trade? well, first of all, did you get what you wanted? New England's already got three running backs, one a rookie they like. They don't need a fourth. And they need to accumulate picks, cobble a bunch of them together, and try to eventually move up to get more playmakers because that's what they don't have. The Rams need a running back now. And Sony Michelle has fallen out of the rotation he did last year regularly.

Can still play. Cammakers is better, but there's not a huge gap between. Sony Michelle and Cam Anchors. It really isn't. One's a B back. One's a B plus back. But it is interesting. People are always into, oh, this morning I saw it. Patriots won the trade. Really? Because I'm going to guarantee you something out of this trade. Between Sean McVe, the Rams offensive line, and the need for Sony Michelle, he will be productive this year. How productive I don't know. Have you watched the Patriots last six drafts? They miss a lot. Two years ago, they took two tight ends in the third round.

Neither can play a lick. A lick. Last year, they had five total catches. So you think a fifth and a six round pick are going to be destined to be stars? They can't get tight ends right. And they didn't have tight ends. So they would have played anybody. They drafted two in the third round.

Neither can play. So, you know, when the Bears got Khalil Mack, oh, bears dominated the trade. For a year, it looked like that. But last year, Kalil Mack didn't do much. And by the way, he's so expensive. He's one of the reasons they had to get rid of their best corner, Kyle Fuller. So who won the trade?

Did you attain something that works for your current needs or initiatives? The Rams needed a running back. You cannot win the NFC West. To me, the most physical division in football, without some semblance. of an at least solid to good running game. Sony Michelle can provide that. By the way, Cam Acres and Sony Michelle are virtually the same size.

Same kind of shifty back. Neither is a power back. Neither has high-end, top-end speed. They're shifting. They get yards. They run very well. They find the hole quickly. They've got good speed, not great.

They're big. They're not going to run you over. Neither is Nick Chubb, but both are good. But don't get too paralyzed about who won the trade. Bottom line is, if I'm selling, on a house and you're buying it. I'm done living there and you want to live there. Who cares? I've sold houses in my life. I'm done with them. All right? You, I just sold one six months ago. Somebody, a family wanted a house. I was done with it. Who won the deal? I got what I wanted.

You got what you wanted. That's how NFL trades work. Patriots are in the accumulate draft picks, cobble them together, get a bunch of third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh. Can you move up and get one or two play, here maybe three or four. Rams need it back. They got it. Hey, this is the year we've figured out Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson, when told about this, said, quote, I strongly doubt it. I love Lamar Jackson. I doubt it. Why do all of you struggle to embrace him? You keep defending every time I bring up Baker-Mayfield in the same division. You keep telling me he's a star.

Baker started 45 games. He's won half, 23. Lamar Jackson started 37. He's 1-30. Lamar Jackson's passer rating is 102.6. Baker's is 89. Oh, yeah. Lamar's younger than Baker, has already won MVP.

and is the fastest player at the position ever. One of them, you are just defending at every corner. He's a star. The other one, I can't pass. Well, it's interesting. Well, since I am literally a walking Google up here, in 2019, do you know who led the NFL in touchdown passes? Oh, it was not Patrick Mahomes.

It was not Tom Brady. It's not Russell Wilson. it was Lamar Jackson with 36. Stop telling me he can't pass. Stop it. He's got the fourth highest pass rating of all time. He throws it differently. So did Philip Rivers.

Big Ben, the one-handed pump fake, just because it looks different. He can pass. You have been defending from day one, Cam Newton. Cam can't pass. If you took every quarterback in the league who has played at least three years, so let's get the rookies and the young kids out.

And you said, 25-yard seam pass to win the game. There's not a quarterback in the league I would trust less than Cam Newton. Until the end of last year, his career completion percentage was in the 50s, 59%. His passer ratings at 85. He's a power-running quarterback who's had bad mechanics, inefficiency, and never had back-to-back winning seasons, despite Ron Revere and Billa-check as coaches,

pretty good coaches. You just decided at some point, maybe he's good looking, it's a flash, it's the commercials, you're going to defend Cam. You have decided maybe it's all my criticism. You're going to defend Baker. Lamar Jackson's better than both. It's not close. Lamar Jackson is significantly better than Cam Newton.

First three years in the league. Not close. Not even remotely close. He's faster. He's more mature. I trust him throwing the football. I just laugh at the we're going to figure out Lamar Jackson this year.

Oh, folks, you never figure out stars. Nobody ever figured out Reggie White. Nobody figured out Lawrence Taylor. Nobody's figured out Aaron Donald. Nobody will ever figure out Kobe. Nobody, I mean, to be honest with you, the only time stars are figured out is when the star can't figure it out that work and drive

and off-season matter. And Lamar Jackson is a, dog. That kid every year comes in, looks bigger, stronger, and faster. So this idea you're going to figure Lamar Jackson out is just, it is amazing. Day one, you defended Cam, despite data that shows you, Lamar is significantly better as a quarterback. God, if I say anything about Baker Mayfield, it's 10,000 social media. He's a star. They plan the same division twice a year.

One guy started 37 games on 30 of them. Nobody's figuring Lamar Jackson now. I'm saying he's winning Super Bowls. I mean, good luck beating Patrick Mahomes. And Andy Reid. I'm not saying he's winning Super Bowls. You're not figuring him out. You don't figure out four, three, five speed from a quarterback.

He's going to struggle. All these ooze and awe of Zach Wilson. What did I predict? He will have the toughest first year because of where he's landing. Ask Sam Darnold. The story yesterday, Mackay Beckton, his left tackle, who came into camp 40 pounds overweight, got a concussion, threw up yesterday. He's now out for a while.

Carl Lawson, their top free agent pass rusher, out for the year. Jared Davis, top free agent linebacker out for six weeks. Vinnie Curry, pass rusher out. Denzel Mims, wide receiver, struggled to stay healthy last year, been banged up a little this year. Oh, yeah, did I mention they have a rookie head coach? in a division that may be the best coach division in the NFL. Despite all the ooze and awe of Zach Wilson, this story yesterday, it's already gotten ugly.

By the way, this cannot be minimized. Greg Knapp, their quarterback coach, passed away suddenly. Greg Knapp was a wildly respected, highly acclaimed quarterback coach. A quarterback coach, remember how upset Aaron Rogers got when his quarterback. coach was let go. That's your guy. That's your buddy. That's your confidant. Remember Tom versus time? Tom was on the phone with his coordinator, not Belichick, was literally on the phone constantly, not with a head coach. All-star quarterbacks. All quarterbacks have an ally in the room. It's not the head coach. Head coach has responsibility to run the team. It's your coordinator or

your quarterback coach. And since Zach Wilson's coordinator's never been a play coach, caller, he probably relied heavily briefly on Greg Knapp, and he suddenly, sadly passed away. Left tackle. Now, yesterday, out. Best pass rusher, out. So I've said it before. I said this before the draft. Zach Wilson's more talented than Mack Jones.

But Mac Jones has a much better landing spot, better O'Line, better coach, better coordinator, better, better defense, better culture, better owner, better, better, better, back, back, back. Mac Jones, if he starts week one and Zach Wilson will start week one, Mack will win twice as many games minimum. Tell you right now, he'll win twice as many games. Quarterbacks are not saviors. They're products of their environment.

Tom Brady's the goat. His last year in New England struggled. Next year won the Super Bowl with better teammates in Tampa. The goat! The goat! The goat! Is a product of his environment. The goat. By the way, well, the country.

comp is he's Aaron Rogers. All right. I'll give you that one. What was Aaron Rogers first year in the league as a starter? Six and ten after sitting three years and inheriting a team that won 13 games the year before. Aaron Rogers was over his skis. That's your comp. One more herd?

The Denver Broncos, Teddy Bridgewater beat out Drew Locke. Vic Fangio told the team today, we're going to go with Teddy Bridgewater.

Folks. That's not great. Drew Locke's got 18 starts in this league. Teddy Bridgewater, Denver got him for a six-round pick. Carolina moved off him for Sam Darnold. So Matt rules an offensive guy. They moved off Teddy for Sam Darnold. And Drew Locke can't beat him out. And I've said this about Drewlock.

There's a Jay Cutler thing here. That's my comp. I know Jay. I've interviewed Jay. I've talked to Jay. I don't have anything against Jay. But Jay was his own worst enemy. Jay, there was an indifference and a coolness, Jay.

I have a rule in life. Guys trying to be cool aren't. Like nothing makes you not cool, trying to be cool. There's a casualness to the way Jay Cutler played. There's a lack of urgency. And when I watch Russell Wilson play, every play feels like the biggest play of the year. When I watch Tom Brady play, every down feels like it's urgent. I felt that way with John Elway.

I felt that way with Peyton Manning. Every play is huge. It matters. Jay Cutler and Drew Locke are both the same thing. Really good athletes, fantastic, plus arm strength. Can make plays. They can move around. I mean, Drew's a good athlete.

Bigger, stronger than Teddy, he's a 59% completion percentage. That's just not good enough. That's just not zoning in. So it's not a talent thing for Drew. Big arm. He can move. He's an athlete. I mean, you watch him.

Drew can play. Drew should be a franchise quarterback. But when I watch him, I get the same feeling I got watching Jay Cutler. The great franchise quarterbacks play with urgency. They understand that one mistake, fumble, interceptions the game. There's certain, there's certain professions, airline pilot. You got to fly with urgency. like you really have to pay attention.

90% of airline disasters are pilot airs, not the plane. Surgeon. You got to have urgency. There's a lot of, mine's not like that job. I'm just rattling on, prattling on. There's no real urgency. I'm on for three hours a day. There's not a lot of urgency to this job.

Airline pilot, surgeon, quarterback, politicians, there's not a lot of urgency. You know, you're walking around, you know, there's just occasionally big days, big votes. Politicians do a lot of stump speeches and ribbon cutting and quarterback's an urgent job. You've got to act. Every play matters. Brady played with it. Manning played with it. Russell plays with it.

You can sense it. He doesn't. He's just too casual. Guys got 23 TDs and 18 picks. That's not playing with urgency. So that's not good to me. It's not great. So, and I, and I've, this is not, I'm not doing rearview mirror stuff.

I've always used Jay Cutler as my comp here. It is not a talent thing. But there are jobs every second counts. Quarterbacks one of them. You know, maybe you get one, two games a year to blow out fourth quarter. You make a joke in the huddle. I get that. I'm not Mr. Serious here.

But by and large, that's rare. Average NFL games decided by four points. Phil Sims, by the way, won the New York Giants, their first couple of Super Bowl, still holds the record for the highest pass rating ever in Super Bowl, and the highest completion percentage ever in a Super Bowl, 88%. This thing never shuts off

upstairs. Phil Sims now joining us live. All right, Phil. All right. Here we go. Here we go. So I'm into this. So I just talked about this. Occasionally with the Giants, you'd have a blowout. You can joke in the huddle. But Parcells isn't a big joke guy.

And when I watch Drew Locke, Phil, he's too damn casual for me. He just kind of, it's almost like he's playing basketball, like you shoot 50%. I think him not being Teddy Bridgewater out is saying something. And it's not great. That's my interpretation. How does it land for you? Well, everything you said before this, I really agreed with the way he played the last two years. But first off, let me clear this up.

I'm not cool. I don't want to act cool and don't want to be cool. So just get that out of the way. But Drew Locke last year, you pegged him perfectly. But I did see in these two preseason games this year a different guy, more disciplined, trying to play within the system, knowing the team that he's on, all that. But I think they gave it to Teddy Bridgewater because he did play very well in both preseason games. and he's got more experience.

And they know his history says he's going to play somewhat safer than Drew Lockwood. And Denver, you know, my son, Christopher, I'll give him credit. He said, he heard an interview of one of the players said, hey, we got a really good defense. Big Fangio needs a quarterback not to mess this up. So all that kind of lends itself to, it was leaning towards Teddy Bridgewater. He took advantage of the opportunity, the experience, and being careful with the football. That's why he's to start. I really like Joe Judge, and I think Daniel Jones, once he got over his turnover issues, was pretty effective.

He reminds me a little bit of Alex Smith. He's got good straight line speed. I think he's got a better arm than Alex, but he's a grown-up. He can move a little bit. This is a big year, and I feel I've been talking about this. You grew up in an era in which you played some high school football, then you played college, maybe you start a year or two, go to the NFL. These kids now come out with 10,000 snaps by the time they're 12. And so coaches are demanding now. I'm not giving you four years. If you don't have your act together, and I look at Daniel Jones and I think to myself, I believe internally, Phil, by Thanksgiving,

there will be conversations of, all right, we got our guy, or these turnover issues are not going away. Am I unrealistic? Do you think he has, I think at some point this year, there's going to be big grown-up decisions on this is working or this is not? Am I wrong? Well, I'll just say this.

Not saying you're right or wrong there. Listen, Daniel Jones, it'll have to be a catastrophe in my mind for him not to be the Giants quarterback next year. I think they're sold on who he is, what his talent level is. He's just got to go back and he's got to play a little more free. Quit trying to be Mr. I'm going to do exactly what the coach tells me. Play with the field. Know when the run.

I mean, Colin, let's be real. If I had those legs when I was playing, my butt would have been running all the time. He's not enough. And, you know, it's there to be had for him because I watch every one of their games. And he's got to take advantage of that. And the other big thing is, look, the offensive line will be better. That's all we hear in New York. But Seyquine Barclay, if he's back in the lineup and he's the guy that we think he's going to be,

that will change the whole Giants football team, what they do on both sides of the ball. And to me, that is not a big key. It's the whole key to this giant season. So I said the other day, when I look at Mack Jones, I see Phil Sims. and I said, I could throw it harder than we could, but go ahead. But I said, Parcells and Belichick are forever linked.

When you have a great defensive coach, who's also, you know, really good at, you know, building teams, right, that he's not asking you to do certain things that other coaches would ask their quarterbacks to do. And if you were to give Mack Jones advice based on your years with Parsons, and say, okay, kid, I know what you're going through. Do this and don't do that.

What is the advice you would give Mack Jones with Belichick for the next five years? He already knows it, Colin. Joy, he knows it because he played with Nick Saban. He already knows. They're the same guy. So he's been taught, you know, mentally and all those things. And by an old school coach, I love that term. Oh, he's old school. Hey, old school is really good. I have to leave. All the guys are having great success are old school. But Mac Jones played for Nick Saban. He knows the mentality, how to act, how to handle himself. And listen, I'm going to tell you truth, I was a big fan of his coming out, everything he did, but he's even been better in the preseason games than I expected. Very quick with the football, can get rid of it, and moving around a lot more

and looks even better than it did in college. So I think he, if you can handle Nick Saban, you can handle Bill Belichick, too, and that's what he's used to. So I'm watching hard knocks last night. And when I think of dynasties and great football coaches, Belichick, Parcells, Mike Tomlin, Bill Cower, the Steelers, most of our football success is not glamorous. Even when the teams are great, there is a blue-collar work ethos. I mean, right. I look at those cowboy facilities. It's the Ritz Carlton. I mean, every, Phil, look, I would eat off the floor in those facilities.

And it's ridiculous. And then they overpay, which New England, by the way, Belichick and Parcells are not overpaying for great players. They overpay for good players. And I said to myself, this franchise, this football operation, has got a trust fund kid field. It's a little soft and glamorous to me. I like my football teams to still stay at the Marriott even when their dynasties or feel like it. And your thoughts about the Cowboys' Lack of Success 25 years? years. Could some of that be, they feel a little entitled to America's team? They're not the gritty

operation that a lot of the great teams are. Yeah, listen, I think it's a great take. You know, they're always in the forefront. Anytime we get a chance, no matter what outlet I'm on, if I, last year on Showtime, this year, it's Paramount, CBS, whatever. When you could talk about the Cowboys, everything lights up. There's still, they truly are the America's team, if you want to say it that way. Jerry Jones does a great job. of, you know, branding this football team even to this day. But you're right in saying that. When you talk about all these other teams and the coaches, they are gritty.

There is toughness. That will never leave football. Let's get over this. Oh, we need a new age coach. Hey, tough guys. John Harbaugh, oh, he's touchy, Philly. How about Bruce Ariens? What do you say the other day?

All our offense practice is terrible. What do you do about it, coach? He goes, he goes, in the old days, I'd have ran him to death after practice, but we can't do that now. And, you know, so, yeah, I do not get that feeling when I watch the Cowboys or seeing them or think about them that they're one of the tough teams in the NFL. And when it all comes down to it, that's really who wins almost every year. You've got to be tough. The coach has got to be a guy where every day is a pressurized situation to get you, to make you prepare and never let you let your guard down, which I think happens down in Dallas. Yeah.

So what would you do in Chicago in the quarterback situation? Phil, what would you do? Listen, I wouldn't even hesitate. I would play the rookie. I shouldn't say I wouldn't hesitate. But this talk that he promised Andy Dalton, you know, I just don't get that. You know, coaches Justin Fields has done a really good job in the two exhibition games are played well, preseason games, I should say.

And I think they can do more with him on the offensive side. I think the bears are not a team. They need their quarterback to make plays, that's for sure. just watching the scheme what they do. And they did set up, but here's the plays you're showing. That was set up to make Justin Fields look well in preseason. And, you know, Andy Dalton's in a no-win situation. Justin Fields is going to play in the opening game some if he doesn't start.

And the fans are going to want it. Andy Dalton, no matter what he does, it's not going to please everybody. So I say the sooner you get Justin Fields in there, getting used to it, the better you're going to be in the long run this year. And, of course, it's building not only for this year, but for next year. too. Finally, when I kind of look around the NFL right now, there's a lot of young coaches. And then we have one with Urban Meyer, who's not young, but he's a college coach. And Urban would acknowledge he would admit that he did not watch football on Sundays. And you had

Belichick Parcells. Those are NFL guys. Those are NFL guys. What concerns you about college guy to the NFL with no NFL background at all? Oh, what concerns me. I don't know if we really thought of it in those terms. That's a tough way to answer it. But, you know, the fact that it's so demanding, everything is so close. Decisions you make in the game, you know, you can't get away with a bad decision in the game like you could in college. How about the thing they said on Monday night?

Urban Meyer never really had to work a two-minute offense during his career at Ohio State. And you just go, that's incredible when you think about it. Because every week, they go out there. they're clearly the best team, and except maybe when they play Alabama or Clemson. And so that's a lot of adjusting to get used to. And he's got, I think it's going to be a big learning experience for him this year, even more than it will be for Trevor Lawrence, who, just to thrill this in there, that hit he took the other night, you just can't do that no way.

But I went back and looked at some of my notes before the draft, and I wrote down in there, wow, Trevor Lawrence, playing for Clemson, and as good as he is, takes a lot of extra hits running the football that are definitely unwarned in college. And surely you can't do that in the pros, that's for sure. Just talking about that with a friend last night. We were talking about that exact hit. It was, oh, no, no, don't. Oh, well, I winced.

But it immediately brought me to, and I just, for everything he did, he threw the ball well, he's got all these things you want. But he would run inside at Clemson. And, you know, some of those defense, they were wiping him out. And I just thought, wow, that's crazy to play that way. and he will not get away with if he continues at the NFL. Well, you must be eating chia seeds and tofu because you look fantastic, Phil. You look like how?

Well, I feel awful, but that's the whole other thing. But, you know, I don't know what to tell you. What the hell is going on in my hair? I'm looking in the, you know, I have, well, I don't know. Look pretty good to me. Say hi to Chris. Phil. I love you.
