All I heard for months, yep, yep, yep, yep, yep. Spent a little less time yapping and more time voting. If you want somebody out, go vote. Nobody voted for the conservatives. Yep, yep, yeah. That's why you can't. I don't even read the media. I'm not even the media.

We're not the media. We just do a show and tell you what we know. The media makes it out. You can't ever trust them. I mean, you can't, it's just like all, all I heard for the last five months. Oh, Newsom's out of here. It's not even close. Because most people have lives and most people aren't unhappy and most people aren't miserable.

And most people know being a governor's hard. And most losers don't get that. So they sit around yapping. The reality is most people don't want to replace our president. They don't want to replace our governor. Well, also isn't, I mean, our economy is crushing. Cushing. California had a $75 billion surplus.

during the pandemic. Surplus. We got money just rolling out of the banks out of here. So we're just the whole thing. When the economy is good, folks, take a deep breath. Go hang out with your kids. Stay off message boards. I mean, seriously.

All right. That's in my soapbox for today. So tonight, college football stars, is a huge weekend. And Joel Clout, a lot of times, he likes to argue with me. I think we're going to have a better year together. I think we're going to have some symmetry. and get along better this year. I'm hoping for that. The heels are wounds.

It's been very, but in each other's throats for the last couple. That's interesting. Because you have some hot takes going into the... Oh, I got some bigons. Some college football season. That's what I would agree. Okay, so he is calling the Ohio State Minnesota game tonight. Let's bring him in live. He's also doing Penn State, Wisconsin

Saturday. Look at that. Boy, he looks like the voice of college football right there. He's all dressed up and stuff. What's going on? Okay, so I'm going to throw one at you before we get to this big 10 stuff tonight. I'm going to throw one at you right now. Chip Kelly's best team ever and they're going to beat LSU this weekend. Tell me I'm wrong, Clatt. I think that you're wildly wrong. His best team ever was a wild play away from winning a national championship. So no, UCLA is not going to be one snap away from winning a national

championship. That's absolutely ludicrous. You could not be more wrong. It might be his best team at UCLA. Yeah, that's true. And they may potentially beat LSU, but I think it's going to be a tall order. Listen, Dorian Thompson Robinson's got to play better than he did against Hawaii, right? Hawaii is basically like a glorified JV team. That's not a huge knock. They're just not very good right now. And he didn't play well last week. If he plays better, then they'll have a shot against LSU. There's no doubt. That seems very negative to me. Okay, whatever, we'll move past that one. So let's get to this. The, you know, the Big Ten's doing something here, and I don't know if it's very good. I love it, but they got real teams playing each other week one. I mean, Penn State,

Wisconsin, week one, I don't get a layup. I go right to the rim against the bad boy pistons. So what do you make of the Big Ten having these massive games in week one, like tonight? Well, I was going to say, I mean, this one's a huge one, obviously, with Ohio State on the road against Minnesota and Ohio State's first game of the year and the first start for their new quarterback C.J. Stroud. But, you know, we've seen this over the last couple of years. Remember, I know it was a pandemic year, but last year Penn State opened on the road against Indiana, and they lost that game on the Michael Pinnock's reach for the pylon. They did not recover that first month. Remember, they started over, I believe they were 0 and 5 going into the Michigan game.

So it's difficult. There's no doubt about it. And I can't wait until Saturday. I actually like it, though, because you get the eyes and the focus at the college football world on your conference early in the year. Remember, Indiana and Iowa. are going to play early here in the season. So all the focus is going to be on the Big Ten this week. And granted, there's a couple of big ins on Saturday outside of the Big Ten, but the bulk of the college football schedule is going to rest right here in the Big Ten conference. And they're going to have to go and prove it.

Now, that Wisconsin Penn State game, though, here's what's so interesting is that those are two teams that have bona fide, I would say, expectations to potentially challenge and win their division. Maybe Penn State a little less so because of Ohio State, but certainly Wisconsin. So getting off on the right foot, as was proven a year ago, in Penn State not being able to do that, is going to be very important for those two teams.

Yeah, I think Wisconsin's such a great program. Nobody talks about Wisconsin because their coach wears a hoodie and he doesn't sell, you know, he's not a big salesman or anything. He looks like my accountant. But I love Wisconsin. I like what they stand for. It's like Clat, I like what you stand for. That's like we bring on the show.

I like your values. I like Wisconsin's values. Now here's what. I appreciate that. I'm sensing a lot of olive branches being extended here. You want to turn the vibe. You're tired of me stuffing you into a locker every week, and so you're wanting this to be more cordial.

I'm with you here. This is good. Okay, so how about this one? I don't, you know, new quarterbacks are fine. Big Ten's pretty interesting at the top. I don't know. This Ohio State kid open up against Minnesota on the road. This doesn't feel like an easy one tonight.

Who is this Ohio State quarterback? Can he play? Yes. Remember, that quarterback room is loaded. While they have zero experience, I think they're the only FBS team with zero passing attempts in their quarterback room, period. But it's still incredibly talented. Remember, they had a five-star kid McCord. They've got highly recruited. Quinn Ewers came in. He reclassified and came in. Granted, he's been here like 32 seconds. So CJ Stroud can play. There's no doubt about it. He got into that Michigan State game last year and went on a fourth. 48-yard run.

Like, in order to be the quarterback and win a legitimate battle at this school and this program, you've got to be able to play. And then here's the thing that I think we should all focus on is, and we do in the NFL a bit, column, we talk about the supporting cast, right? How, what this rookie quarterback doesn't have the supporting cast? This one does. You know, what's the fit? What does it look like all around that player?

Well, around C.J. Stroud, it looks unbelievable. They have potentially the best offensive line in the country. In fact, when I'm talking with their coaches, they talk about, you know, when you're talking about the lifetime of NFL contracts sitting on the offensive line just for Ohio State, you're looking at like a quarter of a billion dollars in front of C.J. Stroud. They are legit up front. They've got a great stable of running backs, including a guy that no one has seen yet, Travion Henderson, a true freshman.

Very excited to see him tonight. They've got the best and deepest stable of wide receivers in all of college football. They've got a guy that potentially could win the Mackey Award as the best tight end in Jeremy Ruckert. It is an embarrassment of riches for C.J. Stroud. So if you're going to come in with no experience, granted at a place with high expectations, but this is a type of offense that you want a quarterback. And I didn't even mention that they've got one of the best minds and play callers in the sport and Ryan Day at the helm.

All right. Let's segue over to Michigan. You and I have mostly been supportive of Jim, and I thought his career was flying. He was really, he was the guy at San Diego and Stanford and the Niners in the Super Bowl and Michigan back to back 10 and 3. And then it just didn't work. And I have this, and then this, I just read a story in the athletic today where, listen, he had to redo his staff. The AD sat him down. And I said earlier today there are certain personalities, Gruden's one, Harbaugh's one.

They can bulldoze people. And you've got to make sure when you build a staff, you have people on a staff that push back. because Jim will just run you over and Gruden will just run you over. And I do feel like Jim got a little too much power at Michigan based on his Super Bowl in the contract. And I think he needs people to push back. That's my 30,000 feet view. What do you make of that? I think that sounds good in theory.

I don't think that that's right because he's been giving up power for a while. Josh Gattis, remember, came in a couple of years ago and totally changed the offense, you know, and he kind of exited from that role of trying to be the main identity of the offense. I think that this reminds me a lot. Do you remember back in like the early, what was it, 2011, 2012, Colin, when Mack Brown had struggled for a couple of years. They go to the national championship in 2009. Colt McCoy goes down, Bama wins. And then they struggle for a couple of years.

And then he just fired his whole staff. and he brought in all these new guys. Now, if you'll remember, they were very good young coaches, and they have since gone on to have very good careers, but it didn't work at Texas. Brian Harsen was the offensive coordinator of that team back there at Texas. Didn't work out. He had to leave and go back to Boise. Mani Diaz was the defensive corner, a nice young defensive coordinator. Didn't work out at Texas. He had to move on. Now he's the head coach at Miami. Of course, Harrison is at Auburn. So it's worked out for those guys. They're good coaches, but it didn't work at Texas.

I don't know if this is going to work. I'm also reminded that Bob Stoop's transition to staff late in his tenure at Oklahoma, and it did work to the Lincoln Riley's of the world. So we've seen this a couple of times. I think it's a 50-50 proposition right now in Michigan. I think Michigan could have a very average 500-type year, and I think they could go back to being a 10-3 team. I think they're the biggest unknown in the Big Ten Conference right now.

All right. So I like Sark a lot, and I like people who stumble. in life and give him a second chance. And I'm a big fan of Sark, and I thought he was a great coordinator. And I love that Nick Saban gave him a chance. The one coordinator of the year, and he goes to Texas. They got the best running back, in my opinion, in the country. He's always, even at USC, Washington, he can recruit. But they face Louisiana in the opener, and that team is all they're good. They're good. Nobody watches them. They're really good. And I wonder about all this SEC talk. And I look at Texas this year. What is Texas? What does Joel Klat expect from Texas?

because I'm kind of resting on recruiting. I'm like, well, he likes to run. They got a good back. They'll run the ball. Can they play? Their defense always disappoints me in the last several years. What am I going to get from Texas this year? That's a great question.

I thought he did a great job hiring his staff. Pete Kutikowsky is their defensive coordinator. I think that was a very good move. I think they should be better on defense, although that remains to be seen. This new quarterback, I'm very interested in. Hudson Card, this young kid, they're very high on him. and rest assured that that staff, it would have been easier for them to go with Casey Thompson, the older quarterback. Because now they're probably going to lose a guy like Casey Thompson to the transfer portal because the sense of urgency is on him to get on the field.

And now he's got a younger kid playing ahead of him at the University of Texas. So it didn't actually behoove them from a roster standpoint to name the young kid, the starter. He went out and earned that job. I'm with you on Bejohn Robinson. I think he's the best back in the country. He's my number three guy right now in the preseason for the Heisman trophy. This week is a tough one. But to your point, I believe Steve Sarkesian is going to work at Texas because we've seen him work before.

Let's not make the mistake of erasing history here. He took over a winless Washington team. You're from Seattle. You remember that time. And Willingham went 0 and 12. And Steve Sarkisian came in there and built what eventually Chris Peterson took over to go to a playoff. Right? Like he got him back to a winning program and then to a perennial bowl team.

And then he went to USC and some personal problems derailed that issue there at USC. But he's a really good coordinator. And as long as he's right personally, I think he's going to have a lot of success at Texas. I don't think this whole SEC thing is going to mess with the kids because remember now, they're kids, right? These are 18 to 22 year olds. They've got blinders on. They can't see further than five feet in front of their face.

So a lot of times you talk about the future like that, it really doesn't matter for them. They're not going to hear that noise. I think Texas wins this week, and I think that they have a very good year, and I think they're one of the challengers for Oklahoma in the Big 12. Okay, so Clats do in Ohio State, Minnesota tonight. It's on Fox at 730 Eastern. It's going to be fantastic. Penn State, Wisconsin, Saturday.

Okay, let me circle back because you kind of brushed off what I thought was a brilliant question. So let's go back to the Chip Kelly thing. I'm going to rephrase it. Who is going to be the best college football team in L.A. in three months? USC or UCLA? A. Now, listen, your first question was okay. It was average.

That one was a good one. That's a good question. I'm hoping. I can't see you right now, but Joy, I hope he's sitting back in his chair with like his shoulders kind of puffed up and like, yes, very proud Papa style because that was a good question. Here's the deal. I just don't trust USC to do the right things as far as running the football.

I know they're talented. I'm a fan of their quarterback. I think their defense will be better. But when it comes down to it, they just, I don't trust them. And I'm going to trust the run game for UCLA. In three months,

the best team in L.A. is the UCLA Bruins. Whoa. I'll tell you something. Not a terrible start for us. You blew me off. I was okay with it. I was the adult in that situation.

I came around and we had a nice 12, 15-minute talk. I thought you were very good today, Clat. We're going to bring you on next week. I thought you were very good. No, listen, your last question in particular kind of saved it. Kind of put a bow on. I thought it was very good. Well done.

It's not how you start calling. That's how you finish. Boom. Exactly. Good seeing you, Clat. You too. Ohio State, Minnesota tonight. And then he gets on a Southwest Airlines flight and goes Penn State, Wisconsin.

He'll be at the back of that plane. And he goes Penn State, Wisconsin. So great stuff. This is a very good schedule. Stoops. as part of the team now and clat. We don't mess around on this network. This weekend is just Fox.

All right, Joy with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. Well, the Mack Jones era will begin next weekend against the Dolphins, and he received glowing reviews from coaches and teammates throughout training camp, and Josh McDaniels explained why the team is so comfortable going forward with the rookie this season. It really works hard. He puts a lot of time into it. He's been well prepared each day to come in and do the things that we ask our guys to do. He's learned how to operate, what we've asked them to operate so far, you know, fairly well. he's generally taking care of the football

and he's given the other 10 guys on the field an opportunity to do their job effectively and produce positive plays. Mac and cheese. Yeah, maybe I'll be wrong, but I'm excited for it. I'll be honest, I like new stuff. I like new music. I like new food.

I like my new quarterback, so I'm rooting for him. I think it'll be fun. I'm rooting for everyone. I don't root against anyone. We just have to have our opinions about it because this is what we do. So it's not about, like, and I don't even root for my opinion

if it's necessarily not the most positive one. Like, I hope that I'm wrong about most of the things that don't have the most glowing review. Right. It doesn't matter to me. But I do think this is the best situation. Oh, God, is great. Perfect.

I mean, it's literally, and unlike Trey Lance, which is a great situation. You have. But there's a, there's more pressure, I think, on the Niners. I do, too. I think there is on the Patriots this year. They gave up a lot for Trey Lance. Remember they had to get, I mean, Mac fell. to New England and has doubters.

And we know what that roster is capable of. So it was injuries last year that derailed them. With New England, we're not quite sure what they have here. Like, they're still in a kind of a retooling space. We'd be like, what a year. Right. So that's a little different. Obviously, the Jets and Jacksonville have their own situation.

And Chicago, while I don't think they are necessarily rebuilding, they have, no one really has any playoff expectations from them either. It's a packer division. Yeah. So it's a good situation for Mac. I am just fascinated to see what Bill Belichick does. So am I. I mean, this game with Mack Jones against Tom Brady back in New England. What is it, week four? It's great. So good. It's going to be so good. So the last three Alabama

quarterbacks, Jalen Hertz, Tua, Tungabaloa, and Mac Jones will all be starters week one this season. We'll get to see Tua against Mack Jones in week one when the dolphins play the Patriots. And their former coach, Nick Saban, is excited for all of them to get their chance in the NFL. Well, I think all three of those guys did an outstanding job when they were here. I'm happy to see that they're getting an opportunity to play and start at the next level. I never really had any issue thinking that they would not have successful NFL careers. Now they have the opportunity to show, you know, how successful they can be.

this is quite the experiment with these three guys. Because if you look at the Alabama quarterbacks that were drafted since Nick went to Alabama as the head coach in 2007, it's Mack Jones, Tua, Jalen Hertz, A.J. McCarron, and Greg McElroy. It's fine. I give Sabin credit. First seven, eight years in Alabama, it was all about defense. Yeah. Last four, it's all about receivers and quarterbacks. He has pivoted very nicely into a very clever offensive juggernaut.

They're now a offensive juggernaut. And I got to be honest, this, you would not, they don't always get the five-star quarterback, not all the time. They don't because they run a power run game. But Nick Saban deserves credit. A lot of old guys can't pivot. Nick has pivoted brilliantly. That offense is aggressive, multiple, clever.

I mean, these guys have an opportunity to shatter that stigma that Bama quarterbacks can't play in the NFL. It's so interesting that, like, successful, intelligent people change their opinion when they get new information. It's amazing. Isn't it crazy how you do that? Like, new information I can change. By the way, he complained initially about the pace of play that Oregon was playing with, and now he plays with it.

Now Alabama's no huddle. They're flying around. And they're winning, right? It's amazing. It's so wild. New information, you change the way. Anyway, I don't know. Aaron Rogers' future in Green Bay after the season is unclear,

year. But he looks to be committed for this year and he's even trolling online. He posted a picture with Matt LaFleurr on his Instagram story with the caption. They said we wouldn't get along with two laughing faces and even a heart emoji. Oh, that's nice. And he's hugging Matt LaFleure. That's not the Aaron I like. Put your arm around the coach. Aaron, you could, come on, that's nice Aaron. You know, I didn't have any doubt that if he was going to be there this season that he was going to be all in. Like, what's the value of going there and, like, being miserable? Let's make it one great

last year. It's the last dance. That's what they posted the memes for. Let's have... Let's have... Enjoy it. Live it up to the fullest. Be in the moments. Here and now. Be here now. And they have a good roster and they have great players. So why not? They're obviously

contenders this year. I do think I'm with you. It was a lot of noise this offseason. But it does seem like they're all in on the football aspect of things. for now. People have the ability to compartmentalize. Put the rest of the next off season off, until next off season, and let's focus on what we're doing now. I do think it's funny that he's

he's being a little more loose this year, though. You could admit that. Yeah. Oh, he's a little bit of a different cap. He's doing his own thing this year. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. one of only eight players with three rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns last year. and I believe they have in Indianapolis, one of the top offensive lines in the league, and the Colts running back is joining us live. It's great to have you on. So let's be honest here. So you have Phillip Rivers, the old guy, and he comes in for a year.

It works way better than I thought. And then the story comes out. Carson Wentz is coming in. What was your initial reaction, Nahim, and the teams, when you hear Russell, when you hear Carson Wentz is coming in because there have been a lot of stories about him. he'd been great he had struggled what was your initial reaction

I mean honestly we first heard about it we were excited about it welcomed him with open arms we also knew that you know his you know when he was MVP caliber season you know he was with frank so we were excited about that too and you know he's in a great place a great team and you know we're excited to have to you know frank rike is interesting because he was not the first choice he was the second choice by the colts he's hit it out of the park Tell me if I had never met Frank or didn't know Frank. Take all your coaches in your career, Naheem, and say, what makes Frank Reich special?

What makes Frank Reich special is simple. He understands what it's like to be a player. And he's just, he's an honest stand-up guy. It's somebody that you want to play for. And somebody that you know, you'd risk everything for, you know, what he says, he does and he always falls through with that. So, you know, he always just makes us a better team just because we believe in each other. We trust him and he trusts us.

Is he a vocal leader? Is he a yell or screamer ever? No. When he actually yells or scream, we know that something is wrong, and we know we have to tighten up. He's real stoic, not serious, but he's really focused. He loves the game, and he's very passionate, but he's not much of a screamer. Now, the offense is going to be different, Naheem, because Philip was really a pocket quarterback, and Carson's more mobile.

Am I going to see more bootleg, single back? What will the offense look like this year? I think it'll look, you know, we're obviously going to run the ball, and we have our wrinkles to help Carson out and, you know, you know, utilize his skill set. So I think we'll see a little bit more different things than we did with Philip. But, you know, we're going to run the ball first, and we have great playmakers out wide, so we're going to give them opportunities as well. So it's interesting. No preseason last year. Now you get preseason.

And some teams play starters. A lot of teams don't play starters. As a running back, do you like the preseason? Do you like to get hit and build up the calluses? Or what is your kind of take? Because I did see Dobbins got hurt in Baltimore, Aker's got hurt with the RAM, Cam's good player. So a couple backs got hurt.

If you could choose, do you think the preseason is a valuable time to play in games? Honestly, that's really a tough one. Last year, not having it and making it feel kind of like college was cool. But I do know for me, at least, I want to go out there and at least catch a couple of punt returns, get hit a couple of times, maybe not play. forever, but I think it was great to go out there and just work up a sweat and get hit by somebody before the season starts. You're a great past catching running back. Outstanding. Where do you develop that? Were you always that? That's just my father. He always told me the more you can do,

the better you can do. So even when I was younger, I always played receiver, always caught the ball. And even in college, my first two years, I played receiver. So really just a blessing from the Lord. And my dad, you know, seeing that I was an athlete and utilizing it. So when you look at this team. I want you to talk about your schedule. You got a new quarterback. You know, Carson had to sit out, the vaccination thing and all that stuff, and then you got the backups coming in. Do you feel the offense right now? Do you feel good about it, or is it a little unsettled with Carson not at practice? We feel great. We had practice with them today, and things are moving smoothly. So, you know, every season, not every offense comes out just blazing. And most defenses are headed

offenses, but I think we're in a great spot. We're going to keep building. And, you know, it's a long season. So our goal is a trend upwards. I think we're doing that. You are the pass catcher, although you can run the football. Jonathan Taylor, I think, was a former track star. Were you surprised how good he got at the end of last year? Did you sense he was going to really explode? I wasn't surprised at all. Any person in the building wasn't surprised. When JT. first got here, we knew he was the dog on day one. He's a beast. Great running back. And I think, you know, he just had, with every rookie ass, he just had to figure out the game. The game has to slow down for him a little bit.

As soon as the game slowed down for him, he just took off, and I think he'll take the next step this year. We're all excited to watch him. You know, Quentin Nelson is viewed as the best offensive linemen, certainly the best interior offensive linemen in the NFL. So let's go back to his rookie year. And, you know, he went to Notre Dame. We'd all seen the video and stuff.

He was good. And guards don't usually get drafted early in the first round. So he was obviously good. When was the first moment? like you ran behind him or something where was there a moment with Quentin Nelson you were just like okay he's not he's not like everybody

honestly I played against him twice in college and we played we went up there actually in college and Josh Adams actually ran for like 200 and something yards so that was my first time seeing it and then actually the first time I actually was in and got to see him pull it was it was amazing to watch so I figured out I figured out as a rookie I don't need to look at the

read just follow him when he pulls so I love Quinn he's a great running back. He's great for running back to have. By the way, you're the national spokesman for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Saturday they have the MDA takes Vegas streamathon. Why did you get involved with that? Honestly, musculoscidicity is near and dear to my heart. My grandmother passed away from it in 2004. My mom and uncle have it. And it's something that's just went, went up and down my family's generation. So I'm excited and, you know, really, really honored to be

a spokesperson for that. Nihim Haim. By the way, he, but before he, but before he, came on the show. You know, we had Philip Rivers and you and I are both like, he's kind of old. It worked. They were good. Like when you have a great offensive line, I've said this about Baker. When your offensive line's great and you have a good running game and the Colts do,

you just doesn't put any pressure on you. You're throwing on second and four and third and one. So it's such a gift for a quarterback. Baker Mayfield's first couple of years, he's throwing on third and nine. Well, you can also run the ball much easier, and that helps quarterback as well. It sets up everything. It forces linebackers to suck up to the line. It gives you a bigger gap between linebackers and secondary.

So that's why I like the Colts. As long as they have this running game and this offensive line, Carson Wentz is going to be fine. They're going to have all sorts of success. We'll see you tomorrow.
