From Sports Illustrated NFL Network around the league, joins us live on a Monday. So listen, you know my affection for Russell Wilson, and some people say he's a little corny, but he is so optimistic. And let's be honest about it. It's hard to quarterback in this league. Optimism matters, because a lot of times the glass is just, you have to believe it to do it. And then I watch Aaron in the last several months. And it's just a lot of pessimism.

And I can't help but watch Russell Week 1 and Aaron Week 1, Mike. and it looked like the optimistic Russell, it had value over the last three months. Well, it's a great comparison. And let's compare it organizationally because it's bigger than those two humans. But in both cases, you had a quarterback who was super unhappy after the season. I pretty much wanted out. You know, Russell's agent publicly gave a list of four teams he could be traded to. And behind the scenes, it was even worse than that.

And we've heard Aaron now detail how bad it was with Green Bay and general manager Brian Gutakins and how he felt. And so the approaches have been different since they got through that dark period and decided to let it rule for at least one more season. And with Seattle, you're right. Russell predictably has been almost corny like, hey, nothing happened. Go Hawk. I love it here. It's the best. You know, you heard Pete Carroll yesterday.

I've never seen a connection this good between new offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron, and Russell Wilson, a play caller, and a quarterback. But that's Pete, and that's the organization. And, you know, you're allowed to kind of get away with that when you come out ready to rock and roll. And they did. Russell, you know, was amazing. I remarked on Twitter yesterday that something about Russell to Tyler Lockett, the degree of difficulty is always insanely high on every ball. all those two connect on and, you know, they were added again. And it looked really cool.

And then you juxtaposed that against Green Bay. And Aaron, who has not shied away from letting us know how he felt about it. And clearly, there's a lot of blame to go around here. I think you could certainly blame the front office, as I have, for years and years and years, for their passivity and their weird, hey, coaches stay out of it. hey, players stay out of it, we'll do this approach, which is pretty unique in the NFL in its extremity. And I think you can look at the coaching staff and, you know, say, have you navigated this successfully? Were you ready? They weren't ready. And they went up against,

you know, maybe the best coach in this situation in football, Sean Payton. Remember last year, the Saints blew out the eventual Super Bowl champions in week one. And yeah, they've been displaced. They're nomadic. And they lost their first ballot Hall of Fame quarterback. And guess what? They were probably the most prepared team to start this season against all odds. And the Packers were an absolute mess.

So I don't want to hear it from them. I don't want to hear Aaron or Matt LaFleur or anyone else say, you know what? That offseason stuff was overblown. That's you guys. That's the media. It has nothing to do with anything. Yeah, okay. Well, be that as it may,

you guys weren't ready for prime time. You know, it's interesting. I watched the NBC game last night, and I almost felt like Chicago had no chance. It was Stafford. It was so fine. It was, but I said this, is that I felt like the Rams got about 30% more playbook. Is that I felt publicly and privately that Sean McVeigh felt like, listen, in order to score with golf, it's got to be a nine-play drive. but with Mahomes and a Stafford, you get some freebies.

You get some home runs. You know what I mean? It doesn't have to be perfect. And I watched the Rams last night and I said, well, it's more of a big playoff, or am I falling for the seductive trap of week one glamour? I mean, it's a little much. It's not just week one. We've been hearing this for months.

So, I mean, listen, you just said Mahomes and Stafford in the same sentence. I'm going to call BS on that right now. If you're putting Patrick Mahomes in a sentence, it better be with Aaron Rogers or Russell Wilson or some of those legends I've seen in the past. You know, look, people say, it's just a little much for me. It's like, now he has Matthew Stafford. They complete each other's sentences. They both have photographic memories. First of all, take the Rams to the next level.

bro, they were at the level of NFC champions winning an insanely hard road game in New Orleans, by the way, with great quarterback play. So that's a pretty high level that they were on with Jared Goff. I know that it hasn't looked as great with Jared and Sean for much of the past two seasons. But I've also seen, let's compare Matthew Stafford's unbelievable game last night with, say, Jared Goff's night game against the Vikings

in 2018 where, you know, one NFL head coach told me it's the best game he's ever seen a quarterback play. It was not the coach of the Vikings who played against him, Mike Zimmer, and it was not Sean. But, you know, Jared Gough has looked amazing at times. Remember that Monday night game against Patrick Mahomes? Yep. You know, where it was like the score was in the 50s and Gough threw that incredible pass to clinch it to Jared Everett, Gerald Everett at the end. So I know it got crossed up with Sean and Jared. I'm happy for Sean that he has found someone to complete his sentences now that he thinks is better. I'm happy for Jared, honestly, that he's in a place where he has organizational support

and feels as though they're all pulling in the same direction. I was excited by what the Lions did after they were getting blown out just to battle. And I think that bodes well for the Dan Campbell skeptics that they're playing hard for him and not quitting. But it's just hard for me to hear the Matthew Stafford as the Savior talk this early. It was a great debut, but to paraphrase Harvey Keitel as the wolf in Pulp Fiction

and Colin, I paraphrase. Let's not start scratching each other's backs just yet. I like any Harvey Keitel references. Welcome on this show. So a lot of people did not watch this game or they're not talking about it. the less glamorous L.A. team that plays at So-Fi as the Chargers, I got to tell you something, their left tackle, Rishon Slater, threw a shutout, Herbert may throw the best back shoulder ball in the league

not name Aaron Rogers. That was not an easy place to play. I mean, and with a brand new offensive line, and they have a rookie head coach, and they won on the road, West Coast, early Eastern game. How good could they be? really good and yeah you and i both have paid close attention to the chargers and i know brandon staley very very well and what you saw the rams defense doing last night flying around mixing it up he started that last year that got him the charger job and uh he is not a subtle guy he's not coming in thinking wow i was a t3 five years ago and somehow i'm now an NFL head coach this young and golly gee he's He's trying to, you know, choke you out.

And he understood the challenge, as you stated really well. I talked to Ron Rivera this week or this past week, and he understood it too. The chargers are very legit. And what we saw Justin Herbert do from the jump last year is getting better. And those four third down pass conversions on the clenching drive, especially that first one, the back shoulder grow, were just, you know, indicative of how special he is. But Washington's got a really good defense. They did lose Ryan Fitzpatrick, but Taylor Heineke, you know, stepped in and did pretty well.

Washington forced a couple of key turnovers down near the goal line. The Chargers forced one right back with that Antonio Gibson fumble to set up what turned out to be the winning score. So it was a really good game, but the Chargers last year were good and could not close and had real trouble in those close games. juxtaposed against that really good year in 2018 when they won all the close games. I think it really is a promising sign for Brandon Staley for what they have going. And yes, Slater was really, really good. They've made really good draft picks in recent years, and I think you're starting to see the seeds of that. All right.

By the way, the Chicago Bears are, if nothing else, interesting. And I made this, listen, I was kind of a, I tend to be kind of a go with Garapolo, go with Dalton, go with the older guys. unless you're the Jets, just let the kid play. Most of the time, I'm like, can we give these kids a break and not just throw them in to the Mardi Gras, nine rum drinks in? Let's slow down the party a little bit. But I will say this. I will say this. The bears are not a Super Bowl roster.

And there's going to be hiccups for all young quarterbacks. Could I make the argument? I watched the way the players reacted to Justin Fields. Could I make the argument? This offense has no juice. Alan Robinson, that's it, that maybe it's just, this is not a playoff team. Just let the kid play. Make it like the Jets.

Make it like the Jags. Well, if I'm the owner of the Bears, that I would totally hear you. But if I am the general manager or coach who rightfully believe they are in danger of losing their jobs, I think you really have to, you know, you can't just say, we don't care about this season. Let's throw the kid in. First of all, there's the kids long-term development. that you don't want to scar them. But secondly, you know, the players know, and they see in practice,

if the players believe Justin Fields gives you the best chance to win, and you believe that, you better put him in yesterday. But if you believe that Andy Dalton's giving you the best chance and you see them every day, and your players believe that, you, if you're Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy, you have to think about the now. I mean, look at Denver, right? Vic Fangio knows he's got to win in a very tough division with the aforementioned chargers and, of course, the Chiefs,

We'll see about the Raiders tonight. So do you think that, you know, when he was thinking Teddy Bridgewater versus Drew Locke, think that impacted his thinking? I do. And I don't blame him. I think Teddy Bridgewater gives you a better feeling about winning now. And so, you know, Kyle Shanahan obviously has a little more leeway. He went to a Super Bowl two seasons ago and may do it again this year. But I think if you're Negi or Fangio, you, I trust.

that you're trying to win now by any means necessary. And I agree with you about the nine rum drinks and the beads in general. So, you know, there is a chorus of, you know, there's a loud chorus, not just of fans, but, you know, people in my business who will shout it for the rooftops because they're impatient. You know, it's an instant gratification society. They want to see Justin Fields now. Mike Silver, always well connected. We'll talk soon, buddy.

Well, the Eagles. Fly Eagles fly, huh? I had them sigh eagle, sigh Friday.

Wrong-o. Wrong face right here. Sometimes we're wrong. Sometimes we're wrong. We do calling right, calling wrong every Monday. You're on the herd. 32 to 7. It was impressive. 32 to 6. Premier for Nick Siriani. Jalen Hertz threw for three touchdowns and Philly's defense kept Atlanta out of the end zone. Lane Johnson described a team meeting that Siriani led the night before to help pump up the team. He said he showed us some clips of some players. He showed some clips of himself playing basketball in high school. It showed his way of persevering and ended up playing the same team again and winning. And at the end,

he told us to break down and go around and shake everybody's hand. He said, man, this is a team. It was a cool moment. And it was unlike any meetings I've had before. Defante Smith also had six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. Jalen Hurts looked great. 27 to 35, 264 yards, three touchdowns, 60s rushing yards. He did. He moved. You know, listen, we had said this last week. They have great tight ends, and it appears the last two years, their first round receivers can play.

Yes. So they're going to be better. And you add the component of quarterback that can run around. I just, maybe this is the team I made a big mistake on. Listen, I know I know I whiffed somewhere in my predictions. Yeah, I mean, we always do. I'm not overreacting to week one anything that I saw. There were some very interesting blowouts.

Like, I don't think the Packers are that bad. I don't know that the Saints are that good. I don't think the Titans are going to be great this year, but I don't know that they're that bad either. To go into Jalen Hertz, you go into Atlanta and literally on both sides of the ball, completely but it was very impressive, but this is why I said to just give it to Jailen Hertz. Like, what are we talking about a quarterback competition of Joe Flacco?

Like, yes, Jalen Hertz is the guy. He should be the guy. And let him rise and fall throughout the season and find out if he is the future of your organization. Like, it's not like he was. the number one overall pick or anything, but Carson Wentz isn't there because you made that move amongst other things, and they looked great. So look,

I'm with you. Maybe the Nixiriani press conferences aren't our particular flavor. He's Lombardi, according to his, it's literally Lombardi. He's connecting with the team. That's what I said last week. Just because he's not going from the mic for us, for the nerdy media people,

but he can communicate with the team, that's all that matters. And they looks great. you can't see anything negative my world was totally upside down at one o'clock pacific i i watched it i'm like listen i'm so god glad that somebody else lost betting atlanta let Atlanta torment you i'm over Atlanta i am done being tormented but i'm so glad you're breaking that talk of relationship no i almost bet them i know you wanted to i'm done them ruining my sundays at one o'clock but i will tell you this i watched and i just sat there and i went none of this makes sense they looked they may have been the

most prepared team. New Orleans, not talking best. Prepared Philadelphia Saints were the most prepared looking team. Seattle was good, too. And I love that game for James as well. So the 49ers looked like they were going to cruise to a blowout win over the Lions. They were up 3810 in the third quarter. Not even competitive. Yes.

And then Detroit came roaring back. Three touchdowns in the second half to close the gap. They weren't able to complete the comeback. Oh, it was close. It was very close. I was rooting for Detroit. I'm like, oh my God, I love this chaos. Please come back and be.

Not that I'm rooting against the Niners, but I root for chaos. And that would have been amazing. I had the Lions plus seven and a half. And I apologized, an hour into the game. I literally went on my camera and said, I apologize, embarrassing. And I called a friend. I said, if I cover, if Detroit, even if they lose and I cover, the football gods, I'll never ask another favor my entire life.

Because I had no, I was totally on the wrong side. And I almost got the cover. So close. But they ended up losing 41 to 33, regardless of how the beginning of the game started for Detroit. They did make that great comeback run. And Dan Campbell says they have a lot of things that they need to fix. You throw the ball 57 times. That's not our game, man. You know, we're not going to win a lot of those games. Now, we had a chance. We gave ourselves a chance, but we got to eliminate all the little stuff. There's really so much stuff to clean up on that tape. Well, he's right about that. I mean, you don't, when you're trying to come back, obviously, you need to throw the ball more. So that's not sustainable. It doesn't throwing the ball 57 times is not how you want to run your offense.

But they were trying to come back. San Francisco has a little bit of a defensive hole. You can run the ball right up the middle on them. And they did over and over and over. Now, that's because Kinlaugh was hurt. He's coming back. But I will say this for Dan Campbell. He immediately identified the nine, in that even when they were getting beat,

He identified on tape. The Niners' weaknesses right through the center and they went at it and at it and at it. But in the end, the pass rush, Goff didn't have time through a bad pick. Well, yeah, I mean, they ran out of time. But it was a nice comeback for Detroit.

I think they can take some positives from that and that they made it competitive. They did lose Jeff Akuta. He ruptured his Achilles, so he's out for the season. Oh, that pick has never gone well. Yeah. That's been a, that's been a,

from injury to performance, that pick just didn't work. So finally, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens have had positive conversations about a contract extension this offseason, but no deal has been made yet. Lamar is not using an agent and is negotiating himself his deal, and he's reportedly so immersed in football and preparing for the season that the talks have taken a back seat. However, both sides are confident they will complete a deal. This is kind of being discussed as a little strange. obviously, you know, his prerogative, whether he wants to use an agent or not, I prefer to use an agent. I am not a negotiator. I don't, I'm not going to sit through and read all the details. Like there's, there's value in having someone negotiate on your behalf because obviously,

you don't want to pay attention to getting a long-term deal done in the middle of the season, which is what he's not doing. So he's playing without a long-term deal. He's under contract through the 2022 season. He has a $3 million cap hit. So that's the 37th highest among all quarterbacks this season. And we know that he's going to get paid. So, you know, this is how he's choosing to handle his business, but this is the value of having an agent. They can negotiate those things while you're playing. Like, you don't have to worry about that. Yeah, that's, I use an agent.

I, you know, you pay a fee for certain things in life. And I don't want the chaos of yelling back and forth with my boss about what my value is. I don't, I'm not interested. Yeah, but also you're doing your job every day. Yes. And when you're Lamar, you don't have time to then step away from football to talk about this deal. focus on that at all, which is poorly what's happening. And I'm sure both sides obviously want to get this done, but it's looking like it probably

won't happen until the off season. They are favored by four tonight against the Raiders. I'm going to take the Raiders plus four. I'm going to put a, I'm going to put a Hyundai on it, Hyundai on that one. Yeah? That's double my usual bet. I know. 50 bucks gets me, you know, a margarita for me and my lady friend Ann.

So I have 50 bucks usually to me. it means free dinner, I'm going to Hyundai tonight. Because she comes back Tuesday, and maybe I want to get her a card and roses and a dinner. Ah, very nice. So tonight's a Hyundai on the Raiders. A roses are flowers? Sure, why not? I'm all sorts of a mess today.

What really was impressive beyond Russ was how the Seahawks' young defensive line overwhelmed the Colts' excellent offensive line. Keep your eye on that. Jets at Carolina?

Four touchdown passes. Now, new defensive coordinator for the Titans, but they don't engineer a consistent pass rush, and that's a problem. San Francisco at Detroit, almost goffal collapse. 49ers led 4117, two minutes left. Two minutes left. The Lions literally had two touchdowns, converted both two-point conversions, recovered an onside kick, forced a fumble, D'Ebo Samuel in two minutes, and almost tied it late. Pittsburgh at Buffalo, high wattage defense.

T.J. Watt. Five quarterback hits, a force fumble, two sacks. I think he's the most impossible guy to block in the league. That guy, there are no easy snaps. And I'm talking Chase Young. He is unblockable. And by the way, the Steelers overcame a 10-point deficit and had three first downs in their first six drives.

They got one way to win. They're going to dominate teams with mediocre offensive lines, but man, the Steelers' offense is not pretty. Philadelphia, Arizona. Seriani looks serious? Listen, Matt Ryan was held to 136 passing yards, and he's got a good old line. The Eagles outgained Atlanta by 174 yards. That's more than any team outgained any other team. Road game?

Jalen Hart's biggest. start? I'd be honest. It was something. Cleveland at Kansas City, can't meet Mahomet. That's pretty funny. The Browns had the ball midfield, minute 16 left. Chance to take the lead. Baker couldn't do it. Hey, happens. Chiefs have won nine of their last 11 games when trailing. Green Bay at New Orleans. Jeopardy still available. Aaron Rogers would have had a higher passer rating had he spiked the ball on every play. I am not making that up. The Green Bay Packers, three points, lowest scoring team in the entire league.

That's with Aaron Devante and Aaron Jones. Denver at the Giants, giant question marks. The Giants offensive line, folks, is awful. 11 of the 34 dropbacks when the Broncos rushed, four or fewer, they created pressure. Miami at New England. Tua taking steps. I mean, he's 8 and 3 as a starter. I got to give him credit.

11 games, he's won 8. That ain't pretty. Chicago at the Rams, roll out the welcome, Matt. Matt Stafford, all of his starts in his career. His highest passer rating, 156. Say that. He's got some nice weapons. Cooper Cup, Robert Woods.

They got weapons. He's got a very good offensive line and a clever coach. And tonight, Baltimore at Vegas, now hiring running backs. Ravens lost three in the preseason. Now, the good news is they had six different running backs to lead them in rushing last year. So they're not overly dependent on a Gus Edwards, a Justice Hill or a J.K. Dobbins. They're not dependent. I mean, they come at you with a lot of different people.

They picked up Levante Murray. Latavius Murray, yeah. Yeah, my bad. And they sign Levy on Bell to the practice spot. They're throwing stuff out there, but they're not generally reliant outside of Lamar on one back. They let Mark Ingram go and they still ran the ball effectively.
