Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
Starting point is 00:01:21 This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but the show. celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
Starting point is 00:01:43 84's big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it with our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. It's Friday. It's great to be here. Live in Los Angeles, this is the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio FS-1. So much good stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Joy Taylor is joining me. Matthew McConaughan next hour. Levante David to the Bucks next hour. Joy is playing a devil. But a friendly devil. Well, all devils are friendly initially. They lure you in. That's kind of the move, right?
Starting point is 00:03:01 Devils tell you the things you want to hear. That's what I really, so I decided it was like either I'm coming as 2020, so this works, or I'm coming as the devil on your shoulder. And the devil on your shoulder is Orr's trying to lure you in with things that are, they sound good but get you into trouble. Yeah, I mean, there's not, such thing is good trouble too. And the devil's saying, sure, you can flirt with her. It's okay to flirt.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Nobody says you can't flirt. Go for it. But I'm married. Flirting's okay. I mean, this is of a nice devil. Okay. All right, here we go. All of our odds.
Starting point is 00:03:36 We had a winning week last week, Blazing 5. Three and two, and frankly, the Baltimore game, we were on the right side. I felt good about that. We should have gone four and one. We didn't. We went three and two. All of our odds are provided by Fox Bet, and here we go. That's a hot one.
Starting point is 00:03:49 Let's blaze it up. Fire it up. It's Collins, Blazing Five. Rams at Dolphins. I think Miami is in a great spot here. I'll take the Dolphins plus four and what I think is going to be kind of an ugly football game. So the Rams, on a short week, they played a Monday night football,
Starting point is 00:04:07 have to fly east and play an early game. The Dolphins well coached off a buy. And by the way, the Rams have another buy coming up. So my gut feeling on here is Miami's going to play a really good football game. They're going to be limited with Tua. But the truth is, they at least know what he can do. The Rams don't even have tape to look at. They have to go look at Alabama tape on this.
Starting point is 00:04:29 The Dolphins defense is allowed eight and a half points a game last two weeks. Number three in the NFL, it's a well-coached football team rebuilding but still in playoff contention. And I think the Rams on a short week going east, playing early with a quarterback. They have no idea what they're getting into. Upset. Miami wins 27, 26. Tua looks okay. He won't be the story.
Starting point is 00:04:52 The Rams playing poorly will be the story. Titans and Bengals I'll take Tennessee minus six and a half First of all Cincinnati has some injuries this week They're kind of falling apart So the Bengals are falling apart Secondly a week ago We thought Tennessee may be the best team in the league
Starting point is 00:05:10 Because they lost to the Steelers They're not at least a touchdown better than Cincinnati First of all the Titans are the fourth highest scoring team In the NFL they're doing everything They run, they throw And Ryan Tannehill leads the NFL with a passer rating over 115. The Bengals defense is bad, getting worse,
Starting point is 00:05:29 and now injured. They've allowed Baker Mayfield and Phillip Rivers the last two weeks to have season highs in touchdowns. Tennessee well-coached teams that lose in big national TV games usually play excellent focus football the following week.
Starting point is 00:05:45 I think the Titans win going away, 3824. Colts and Lions. All right. You know, I like the Colts here. is three. Here's the reason. We've always said we like really good coaches off a buy. Not all coaches off a buy win, but good coaches off a buy. I think Frank Reich twice in his career off a buy is 2 and 0, and he gets a Detroit team that got outplayed most of the game by Atlanta. The Colts offense has allowed six sacks all year. They run the football and protect their quarterback. Their
Starting point is 00:06:17 defense is excellent. The Lions playing at home doesn't matter. Detroit's lost six straight home games and they're really bad against the run. That's what the Colts want to do this weekend. Take the ball out of Phillip Rivers' hands. Again, I think this is a fairly low-scoring game, so it'll be around the number, but I'm going to take the Colts to win 27 to 20. Chargers at Broncos. I'm actually going to take Denver plus three and a half here.
Starting point is 00:06:44 It's the hook. I'm going to take the half. Reality is Justin Herbert is really talented, but he's never gone to play in that altitude. Okay. Dick Vig Fangio is one of the best defensive minds in football. Denver's got all sorts of talent and it feels like the season for the Denver Broncos. Their defense is actually since week four has been really, really good top five and everything. And the Chargers, their wins are over the Bengals and the Jags and I like Justin Herbert a lot. But this is a rookie quarterback without a preseason, a handful of starts, very good defensive coordinator and a defense in the last
Starting point is 00:07:18 several weeks that have been playing really good football. I'm going to take the Broncos, a little bit of an upset to win 2827. 49ers at Seahawks. You know, it's funny, I'm from Seattle and rarely pick Seattle to win. They are a football team, if not for a goofy personal foul last week. They beat Arizona. They outplay them. It's a really good football team.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Jamal Adams comes back. That's really good for Seattle. The Niners are falling apart. Seattle's offense, this is as good. as it's ever been. And the offensive line, for the record, is much better than people thought. It's a top 15 offensive line.
Starting point is 00:07:56 We thought it was a weakness. It is not. Seattle getting healthier, getting Jamal Adams back. San Francisco is falling apart. Debo Samuel out, two running backs out. A couple of weeks ago, the Niners beat the Rams, and I felt there was a sense of urgency. Seattle does not want to lose two in a row in this division.
Starting point is 00:08:12 I think they come back. I think they play one of their games of the year. I like Seattle to win and cover at home 28 to 21. For more of my Blazing Five Picks, check out the Fox Bet social platforms. There you are. You can look at them one more time. I'm going to take the underdog dolphins.
Starting point is 00:08:33 I'm going to take the underdog chargers, but I'm going to take the favored Titans, the favored Colts, and the favored Seattle Seahawks. So it's very interesting. Usually, Russell Wilson all over. calls it playing neutral. You don't want to have highs and lows if you're the president, a quarterback, you're in a big position. And I've always felt fan is short for fanatic. In most instances, most, fans get all, you know, they get all liquored up, they get all emotional,
Starting point is 00:09:07 and you don't get great emotional discipline from fans because fans go to games to have a good time, have beers, high five, and watch their team win. So very rarely does a fan say something. And I think, oh, that's centered and that they're rooting for their teams. And for fans, this is entertainment. You know, they, this is not, you know, they go to a movie. They watch a sporting event to be, to enjoy it, have a cocktail, have fun, get loose. Their lives are tough.
Starting point is 00:09:31 Their jobs are tough. Usually the media, if they don't root and they shouldn't, you know, gives you a more kind of centered, emotionally disciplined opinion. Certainly not always the case in politics and sports. But it's real, this is a very unique situation. The fans get it more than the media. The New England Patriots made a decision this summer when Tom left. They were going to reboot.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Everybody in New England gets it. Everybody in Boston gets it. In between there, Sammy Adams, everybody gets it. It's the media that doesn't get it. The media is like, Bill is too competitive to tank. Well, Steve Kerr's competitive. He once punched Michael Jordan. He's tanking.
Starting point is 00:10:14 Bill's too competitive to be average for seven years. That's what Bill is. And Bill is too smart to realize you can't win in this league without a quarterback because I'm Bill Belichick and I've won 43% of my games without a great quarterback. And Pete Carroll's been fired twice without a great quarterback. And Andy Reid couldn't win the big game until a great quarterback. Like this idea that Bill is just too competitive to take a step back for a year, re-org, reboot, and get a great quarterback is nonsense.
Starting point is 00:10:47 He's not going to admit it, but smart people all the time take a step back to take two steps forward. And so, didn't you think it was kind of funny that Julian Edelman has precautionary knee procedure? Eight guys just opted out. Take care of your family first in New England. You feel like that's business as usual? Do you think if Brady was there, they'd have that precautionary knee?
Starting point is 00:11:14 knee surgery? Bill's like, well, he may not miss the season, or he may, it won't matter. This is the rare instance where the fans get it. It's just a one step back reboot. My takeaway, they're trying to, Stefan Gilmore, they want to trade him. Why? They won't be as good. I mean, they still like him. He still would start for him next year, but the reality, and they're not paying anybody beyond Stefan Gilmore. It's not like they're not going to have cap space next year. Not paying their quarterback. They're not paying anybody except Stefan. Gilmore, not even paying any of the receivers. Edelman doesn't make big money.
Starting point is 00:11:47 It's a reboot. It happens. It's not, the difference is it's not called tanking in football. Because like hockey, hockey and football are too physical to tank. Like, you have to play hard. And the players will play hard. But it's called restructuring and rebooting and you take one step back. So I think, once again, all these things that don't feel like New England, Julie Nadelvin's now having, it's not necessary.
Starting point is 00:12:11 It's a precautionary knee procedure. I feel bad for Cam. This is, he's kind of the sacrificial lamb on all this stuff. Like, you can't win with this team. And the other questions are, once they get a quarterback, because I think New England's going to beat the Jets twice and lose to everybody else, they may win, you know, five games. They'll have a top seven, eight pick.
Starting point is 00:12:30 I kind of feel like they've got to figure out beyond quarterback. They've got to bring somebody in who can draft skill people. We went and looked at their last five drafts. I'll put it up for our television audience. These are the skill players taken in the last five draft. You tell me, last three, excuse me, you tell me, do you like any? Any? I do think Damien Harris looks like a very good number two running back.
Starting point is 00:12:54 He was a third round pick. But, you know, so I think this idea that Bill Belichick would never do this and never do that. Bill Belichick is too competitive and too smart to not understand you can't win in this league without a great quarterback. And you're not, Cam at this point, is it? and you're not getting one in free agency. You can get one potentially in the draft. Coming up next, Chris Simms stops by NBC Sports and some thoughts on Jerry Jones this weekend.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Starting point is 00:15:16 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:15:33 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because, of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist,
Starting point is 00:16:16 Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tript Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough.
Starting point is 00:16:40 because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:16:54 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Starting point is 00:17:14 Saturday on Fox is a pair of Big 12 matchups as Sam Ellinger leads Texas against Chuba Hubbard and Oklahoma State at Forteastern, followed by Oklahoma squaring off against Texas Tech. It all kicks off Saturday on Fox and the Fox Sports app. Yeah, it's interesting for Texas. All the games have felt big this year. The TCU game felt big and the Kansas State game ended up being big and the Oklahoma game is big. Just something about, and I've said this before, Texas is, one of the few college programs, even when they're not great, they're just tension around them.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Like if they're not great, you know they're going to fire their coach really quick. Right. Like, like, they're just something about, because Texas is a big dog, their winning has been more sporadic than other legendary programs. So, you know, you lose this game this weekend. Tom Herman's going to lose a lot of people in that building. There's no getting past that. By the way, Tommyjohn.com save 15% right now sitewide. Best pair you'll ever wear.
Starting point is 00:18:10 It's free guarantee. I wear it now. 15% Tommyjohn.com slash heard. Chris Sims, NFL analyst for NBC, played eight years in the NFL, former Patriots coaching assistants. He is now joining me live on the East Coast. You know, it's interesting. And we've talked about this, that the quarterback play now, these Justin Herberts and these burrows, they're just so darn good, that it does make you get very impatient with your older quarterback. You look at a Matt Ryan and Matt Stafford, and you're like, hey, look at Justin Herbert. And it's very interesting. I, I watched Atlanta win last night, and I thought, boy, that's a bad win. Now they're going to be just good enough to not get a good pick. Could you make the argument? As the NFL is changing and quarterbacks that can move the pocket are vital now. They're winning. That maybe Matt Ryan is not the future of Atlanta, trade him, sell picks by Tuesday and start over. I mean, I don't think it's crazy. I don't. You know, with the state of their franchise, where they're at. You know, the problem with the Atlanta Falcons the last few years is they're very
Starting point is 00:19:15 top heavy. The majority of their salary cap is invested into four, five, six players across the roster. We've seen that when they get injured or lose a few guys, their season and their team falls apart. This is the third year in a row. We've kind of seen that. So, yeah, Colin, I think it's a very interesting point. We're seeing young guys are ready to come into the league, you know, ready to play, handle all the situations, everything like that. We're seeing. more and more really talented franchise-type quarterbacks in the draft year after year, where we go, oh, there's three or four of them every year to where I would think if I was a GM about, you know, ooh, maybe the future of football is you pull the cord on some of these
Starting point is 00:19:57 franchise quarterbacks a little earlier than we would have in the past, not be, you know, stuck with these 30 million plus dollar a year type contracts and go, hey, we'll find a young cheaper option and do the Seattle Russell Wilson model, right? Young quarterback, rookie contract, build the rest of the football team, and that's where they became relevant. And we've seen a number of teams that have been successful with these rookie quarterback contracts here as of late, which would make me think twice, too, as a GM. So now you're close to the Connecticut area.
Starting point is 00:20:27 I love Sam Darnold, and I do think he deserves a second chance. I just think it's with a second franchise. Let's say they, you know, they're bad. Darnold plays sporadically. They don't have anything to work with. He loses. Trevor Lawrence is out there. You read all the New York stuff, you hear it.
Starting point is 00:20:43 I wonder if there's some sort of pressure to take Trevor Lawrence or do you take all the picks you could get for him. What would you do if you ran the Jets? Ooh, that's a tough one. Now, they're a team that, yes, it's more than just one player. I'm with you, Colin, I'll say this. You can win football games with Sam Darnold. Listen, when there's a whole lot of crap around you all the time,
Starting point is 00:21:06 you know, sometimes you're going to look like crap. You're going to get some crap on your arm. I don't know what they're going to say it. He's not Superman. He's not God. You've got to have an offensive line, a running game, some receivers. I don't care who you are at quarterback. You know, sometimes we forget that Patrick Mahomes got drafted to the number two team in the
Starting point is 00:21:22 AFC, right? He got Tyree Kill, Kelsey, Sammy Watkins right off the bat. As awesome as he is, even a guy like that needs a little help. So I am one that would take the route of let's build the football team. We've all made it about quarterback, quarterback, quarterback, quarterback. Yeah, is Sam Darnold is talented as Trevor Lawrence? No, he's not. But I still think he can win football games, certainly. And that is the big question up here. And I understand it, Colin, too, about the pressure with Trevor Lawrence. He's extremely talented. You don't want to be that franchise that passes him up
Starting point is 00:21:57 and all of a sudden he's the next big thing. He's the next Tom Brady, Aaron Rogers. I think that's what scares maybe the Giants and the Jets fan base up here, that they would be missing that type of player. Kind of like what we saw with Arizona and Josh Rosen and Kyla Murray. I think they like Josh Rosen, but they just went, man, we can't pass up Kyla Murray. There's too many special things about his football game. So I guess I understand the conversation, but I have one that is a believer in build the team first. It's not always about the quarterback, quarterback, quarterback. What is a realistic weekend for Tua?
Starting point is 00:22:32 Well, what will you, because I don't think you can just do wins because Burrow and Herbert, I like. they're not winning much. What do you need to see? What will worry you? I need to see. Yeah. I mean, this is going to be good for me.
Starting point is 00:22:46 I mean, certainly, because Tua, I believe was what a little overrated coming out in the draft process. You know, I never thought he was on the level of Joe Burrow or Justin Herbert.
Starting point is 00:22:54 I really didn't. But I think the big thing is, again, I just want to see the look test. How does he look on the field? Does he have presence? You know, what kind of, how does his arm look? Is there legit NFL pop in that arm?
Starting point is 00:23:06 And then when he does move, and try to escape and extend plays, you know, it's, that's where he got hurt a lot in college. It's, he's not as athletic and a guy that I think is going to run around to scramble as much as everybody thinks he is. So I'm just interested to see how he manages the game, how he looks overall. It's not going to be a tough test. This Rams defense is very good. I don't expect them to have a really awesome statistical day.
Starting point is 00:23:29 If they just run the ball, he takes care of the ball. The Dolphins defense is good and it will match up well with the Rams. They might have a chance. I guess that's it. You know, I just want to see pop in the arm playmaking. I'm always big into this, Colin. I know you can throw a slant route when it's wide open. I know you can hit a curl route when it's wide open.
Starting point is 00:23:48 The reality of quarterback in the NFL, though, a lot of times with these young quarterbacks, people aren't wide open. And what are you going to do then? Are you going to make a play? How are you going to advance your offense? I see Herbert and Burrow doing that a handful of times every game where I go, whoa, there was nothing there. What a play.
Starting point is 00:24:04 What a throw. That's amazing. And that's what I want to see from two. it. Chris Sims joining us, former NFL quarterback quarterback at Texas, too. By the way, we have Matthew McConaughey on later, who's a big Texas show. Yeah, baby. Yeah, Texas show today. Yes, nothing wrong with that. So speaking to Texas, Dallas, I contend they're rebuilding. They just won't admit it yet. And I think if they get punched in the head by Philadelphia, Jerry will get in that, you know, that Gulfstream fly home and go, okay, we are officially in,
Starting point is 00:24:34 we're in a rebuild. This is a bad football team. I don't, I don't. I don't. I don't. don't see their talent. Dak, Zeke, I'd move Amari, I like Jalen Smith. They have a young corner I like. I think they're a rebuild. I don't see all the great talent. What do you see? No, and I'll say I was one that overrated their talent coming into the season. Certainly. I wondered about their defense a little bit. I did, and especially that's been one big issue. There's a disconnect there that they got players that fit another defensive scheme and they don't fit the Mike Nolan scheme. So that goes on the Jones family. You know, I hope everybody also realize that maybe Dak Crescott's a little bit better than some of the haters in the world wanting to give him credit for.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Because, I mean, all he does, I mean, again, they don't look like the same team without him out there. But I'm with you. I think it's the lifeline of this current Dallas Cowboys team. It's over. It is. The offensive line is not the same dominant force it has been, right? You mentioned some of the other players that are good. Yeah, keep those a nucleus.
Starting point is 00:25:32 I hear you with the Amari Cooper conversation. But I think all in all, the Jones family, the Cowboys, they're in this to win Super Bowls. And this is not a Super Bowl team. And I know they're in the crapping NFC East. I would have the same type of thinking you do. That if they lose this week, it's get on the plane. Okay, this year's over. Let's chalk it up.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Let's start thinking about next year how we're going to fit under the salary cap because of the pandemic and COVID-19 and all those things and try to give themselves the best chance for the 2021 season. Steelers Ravens is the class of the weekend. Pittsburgh's better than I thought. Baltimore's not quite as good as I thought. Greg Kosell, smart guy, came on my show this week, and he said, people are starting to play the exact same way against Lamar. We're going to load the box.
Starting point is 00:26:18 You're not going to be able to run on us. And we're going to force you to throw outside on the perimeter. And it's been more effective. So what are you going to look for in Lamar? So now he's been successful. People have spotted a weakness. They're presenting him with a challenge to be. Beat that weakness, can he?
Starting point is 00:26:37 Yeah. I mean, that's the million-dollar question with the Ravens. He's had some games this year, Colin, where he throws the ball at a top-notch level. To where I go, man, he's got it great throw. He's got great control of the football, you know, timing, accuracy, putting the ball in the appropriate places. But there was a few games, like the Chiefs game, where you go, man, I thought we were over this.
Starting point is 00:27:01 That throw, that's kind of underwhelming. the chiefs kind of put that blueprint out there. They called the bluff of the Baltimore Ravens. They played some defenses. They were like, really? You want to try to run the ball into this defense? We got nine people at the line of scrimmage. We're daring you to throw it.
Starting point is 00:27:16 And Baltimore didn't do that early on in that game. And I think that's emboldened a lot of teams to play him that way. I mean, that's really what I want to see, Colin. There's no magic thing. Is this, can he carry the team when they can't bully people in the run game? And I don't mean carry it, but I mean carry it through the past game. Can he be surgical? Do they have enough past game creative
Starting point is 00:27:36 schematics too to help him out that way? Their run game is very creative. The past game at time can be a little bland to where I go, yeah, I know Lamar could throw it a little bit better, but you're not exactly like giving them great schematical advantages that way. Pittsburgh plays a lot of zone defenses. They don't play man.
Starting point is 00:27:55 They're going to be worried about that run game. I think Pittsburgh will be able to slow that run game. Now can Lamar diagnose these zone defenses? and pick it apart with good precision and timing throws and all those things. I don't know. I don't know what to expect. In these type of defensive games like this, it's been a no so far for Lamar Jackson. I hope it changes.
Starting point is 00:28:16 I root for him, but that's what I'll be watching for on Sunday. NBC Sports NFL analyst Chris Sims. Love having you on, but thanks for stopping by today. Anytime, man. You the man. Hey, tell my buddy Matthew McConaughey. I said hello. I will.
Starting point is 00:28:28 Absolutely. I will. It is a Texas Longhorn. show today. Good stuff. Here's Joey Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. All right, well, we were just discussing
Starting point is 00:28:42 the Cowboys, and Ben Danucci is in line to get his first NFL start Sunday with Andy Dalton still dealing with a concussion. And the rookie says he is ready to step up to the challenge. For me, this is an opportunity of a lifetime. I think, you know, as a rookie, a seventh rounder, I think, you know, coming in, you see DAC and you see Andy at the top of the depth chart.
Starting point is 00:29:04 And you're like, hey, there's, you know, there's no chance that, you know, I'm going to be on the field this year. But, hey, this is 2020. What else do you expect? Here we are. And week eight of my rookie year, I've got a chance to go out there on Sunday night football and do what I love to do. So I couldn't be happier and more excited.
Starting point is 00:29:18 The Eagles are favored by nine. Oh, it's up to nine. Boxbed. Yes. Well, Danucci went two for three for 39 yards, fumbled twice in the sack three times. So what the, right now, the Eagles, who I picked him in the division, two, four and one. So they're going to be three, four, and one. That's my Eagles.
Starting point is 00:29:36 Always ugly and always in contention. Well, the Cowboys next three games are at the Eagles, obviously, this weekend. Then the Steelers, then they get a much-needed buy. And then they're at the Vikings. Those are a bunch of losses, yeah. The Steelers game is, honestly, that's a 50-0. That's a 50-burger right there. This weekend, if the Eagles play well, I mean, I don't know if I can go up to 50, but.
Starting point is 00:30:01 They don't have a 50, but. They don't have, they are getting some of the guys back. They're getting a little healthier. They're starting to get healthier. Yeah, they're tied, they're receiver from TCU. Rieger's going to play. Dahlon remains in concussion protocol and was at Friday's walkthrough as an observer. McCarthy won't rule out Dallon unless he can take part in practice on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:30:18 And right now he's not scheduled to participate. So Danucci will likely get the start for the Cowboys. So everything that you've been talking about today might get a running head start for the Cowboys this weekend. That's a lot of points. but I still think I would take all of them and the Eagles. So the Rams are facing two in his NFL debut this weekend. How many more sleeps till two a time?
Starting point is 00:30:41 Three more sleeps? Friday night, Saturday night. Two more night. Two more nights. Two more sleep still two a time. And Sean McVeigh is having his defense study film from Alabama to prepare for Tua. Normally they would break down preseason film, obviously, when going against a rookie quarterback,
Starting point is 00:30:53 but there is none of that because there was no preseason games. So without any preseason, they will rely on his college tape. I can't say I have no expectations for Tua because I will be disappointed if it's a disaster but I won't overreact if it's a disaster either because he hasn't played football in quite a while he's at no preseason it's not like Burrow and Herbert
Starting point is 00:31:19 because he was hurt so he didn't finish out his final season in college and has been while also getting ready for this season still rehabbing Well, yeah, I mean, like, the Tua story is the injury. Right. That is his, that's not Herbert or Burroughs story. No.
Starting point is 00:31:36 Like, the story is, I mean, ask you, if Herbert got hurt today, we wouldn't go, oh, my, that's it. We'd be like, oh, he's a big kid got hurt. If Tua gets hurt Sunday, we are all like, it doesn't work. It's a big. He's hurt in college. It's a big problem. I think, not even Sunday. I think if he gets hurt this season, it'll be a big problem.
Starting point is 00:31:53 I think you're absolutely right. That is not the narrative on Burrow. Herbert missed some college games. That's not the story on him. No, but also I think that that will play a part in what he looks like if it's not great. Like we have to keep in mind, Burrow and Herbert did not deal with an injury at the end of their season. But end of their season, they finished out their final season in college and have been healthy all through the off season leading up even without a preseason this year. So I don't have high expectations for this, but I also am looking macro bigger picture.
Starting point is 00:32:23 So I'm not going to overreact to what happens on Sunday, but I am really looking forward to it. must watch game on Fox, by the way. So Nick Saban has long been recognized as one of the best defensive coaches in college football, but he's reluctantly admitting that the sport has become more of an offensive game. He said good defense doesn't beat good offense anymore. It used to be if you had a good defense, other people weren't going to score. You were always going to be in the game. I'm telling you, it ain't that way anymore.
Starting point is 00:32:50 I don't like it, but we just have to make sure we have an offense that's that way and that explosive. Two have played a big role in that. at Alabama. Yeah. No, I mean, it's Sabin's kind of shifted from a defensive power to a wide receiving juggernaut,
Starting point is 00:33:07 and that's why Nick's smart. He's evolving. If only Nick could help Belichick his buddy out, how to get receivers. Because Saban's done a great job of getting the nation's best receivers out of high school,
Starting point is 00:33:17 developing them. I mean, seriously, it's really impressive. It's very, for Nick to be a defensive coach and to really segue, pivot to what is now an overwhelmingly offensive game
Starting point is 00:33:27 is, It's another reason that Sabin's so smart and impressive. What were we ranting about before Kissel yesterday? New information. New information, adapt, evolve. It's perfectly fine to update how you do things and change your mind. If new things come to light, Nick Sabin could completely be stubborn. He's had an amazing amount of success in his career.
Starting point is 00:33:48 Why would he need to change anything? I don't know, because he wants to stay successful. The game is shifting towards more of an offensive game. He's a defensive guy. He said it. He doesn't like it. But it is what it is. The world's changed, so he's going to keep up with it and continue to be dominant.
Starting point is 00:34:00 And he is. I rarely meet an incurious millionaire. If I meet a successful person, man or woman, they're always curious. Curious means they're always looking for new information. Information is the most valuable currency to powerful, wealthy people. Yep, that's it. As much information, as much information, the more information that you have, the better decisions that you make. Well, Bud Fox, Wall Street.
Starting point is 00:34:25 Gordon Gecko wanted information Very good movie by the way I mean it's true though Like anytime you're around a powerful person They always want to know things It's almost like they're like prying But the more information that you have You can make better decisions
Starting point is 00:34:40 You can adjust and you can be ahead of things Saying the same He's gonna keep you exactly where you are Or worse you're gonna fall behind Nick Sabin's completely right And he adjusted That's why he's still dominating The Devil says
Starting point is 00:34:50 Joy Taylor with the news Well that's the news And thanks for stopping by The HerdLy News. Does our audience on social media like your outfit today? I bet they love your outfit today. Yes, they like it. They like it.
Starting point is 00:35:02 It's approved. It's social media approved. Okay. I thought it would. I'm going as a respected veteran newsman. What is your news? What was it? You know what?
Starting point is 00:35:12 My name is. What is it? Sky Bannister. Yeah, I always wanted that as a name. I told my mom that she didn't appreciate it. I said I wanted to be, when I was a kid and I knew I was going to be a broadcaster, I wanted to be called Sky Bannister. That was such a great name. Like Colin Coward.
Starting point is 00:35:26 I've made it work despite that. It's worked pretty well for you. All right, hold on. Sky Bannister's strong. Sky Bannister, we're kind of, I don't know. Sky Bannister would be like a good name for like a veteran weatherman. Yeah. You know, like Dallas Rains.
Starting point is 00:35:40 I watched Dallas Rains in Los Angeles. Perfect. And I feel like he's smarter because his name. Jason McIntyre's around the corner. His NFL picks for the weekend. Matthew McConaughey is going to be joining us next hour. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.
Starting point is 00:36:01 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here. unpack what went down and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Starting point is 00:37:55 Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:38:19 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. Starting point is 00:38:54 that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth,
Starting point is 00:39:11 or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines. we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hardway.

Starting point is 00:39:43 So Jason McIntyre, we're moving it up one hour today. We're moving up. He usually is the last segment of our Friday show, but actor, great actor Matthew McConaughey, So we're kind of clearing the deck for him and letting him come on. He's got a new book out, which I started reading about three nights ago. It's a journal. It's a fascinating journal. And it's not a advice book.
Starting point is 00:40:01 It's just kind of living his life. And here's what I said in my journal. So we'll have Matthew McConaughey last hour. But my buddy, Jason McIntyre now joining us live with his picks on a Friday. Former newspaper, guys, we call it tomorrow's headlines today. You should actually as a jet fan now. We know they're going to go 0.16. So it's easy.
Starting point is 00:40:20 You're going to get the number one pick. You feel better? today? Yeah, certainly. Great. Did you know, I kind of broke the Trevor Lawrence news on Twitter yesterday. I heard about it from a good source, and I put it out there. Oh, big college football news coming, and I got like 15 texts in about 30 seconds, Colin. What's going on? What's happened? And it was interesting, this Trevor Lawrence situation. Watch that Notre Dame game in two weeks, okay? Clemson's going to do anything in their power to make sure Trevor Lawrence plays against the Irish. All right, here we go. Tomorrow's headlines today.
Starting point is 00:40:52 Steelers Ravens. Can't wait. What's it going to be? Game of the weekend for sure, Colin. The headline will be. Ravens steal a win. Now, I do want to be clear about this. I bet Pittsburgh in this game, getting points, but the Ravens are going to win this game. Listen, they are coming off the by week, of course, and we know that Harbaugh is money off the buy nine and three against the spread. Colin, I just got to ask you about Lamar Jackson, okay? I know it was the MVP last year, transcendent player. How good is he this year? Do you know he hasn't thrown for 200 yards in the last four games? The Ravens, the juggernaut offense last year, putting up millions of points in yards.
Starting point is 00:41:35 They are last in the league in passing yards. It's very strange and it's not like they've played a difficult schedule. This is a challenging Baltimore team to understand. You know, they got their butts kicked in the only tough opponent they played in Kansas City. We're going to learn a lot about Lamar and the Ravens this weekend. I like them to win narrowly over. a Pittsburgh team, you know I'm bullish on. All right. Tomorrow's headlines today. What's it going to be for the Rams at the Dolphins? Ooh, I love a good rookie quarterback debut.
Starting point is 00:42:04 The headline will be a hot to handle. Gotta love Miami in this spot, Colin. Listen, I'm giving you stuff that you're not going to hear other places, okay? Do you remember who devised the defense to slow down Gough and McVeigh and the Super Bowl a couple years ago? A guy by the name of Brian Flores. He's now coaching the dolphins. He's had two weeks to prepare for golf. This is the Rams' fourth trip across the country to the East Coast.
Starting point is 00:42:32 I'm telling you, if you want an upset special this weekend, look no further than Miami. The Tua decision was a little curious. I think it's the first time ever that someone from Harvard lost his job in the NFL to someone from Alabama. That's a first. But I do really like this Miami offense. I'm telling you right now, Rams defense is a little overrated. when you beat up on the NFC East every week, which is what they've done, 4-0, you know,
Starting point is 00:42:55 you look really good. I think 2-0 moves the ball, and I think he's going to be your number one talking point on Monday morning. Tomorrow's headlines today, Patriots at the Bills. What's it going to be? This is a seminal matchup, Colin. This is huge, and the headline will be Belichick-out. I do believe the Patriots are done.
Starting point is 00:43:16 It's over. I kind of love the end of this dynasty, right? It's been two decades. As a long-suffering Jets fan, Colin, it's painful. But I can't wait for the bills to open a can on this overrated New England team. Colin, I'm telling you, here's your challenge Saturday when you're just chilling, waiting for the games on Sunday. Look at this Patriots roster.
Starting point is 00:43:36 You tell me it is talent-wise, not one of the worst three in the league. Seriously, they do not have talent. Given the COVID opt-outs, the loss of Brady, no Edelman this weekend. Nikiel Harry might be out. I mean, where's the offense coming from? I like Buffalo here, man. I'm sorry. I really like the bill.
Starting point is 00:43:52 No, we've said it before. This is what Brady was yelling and screaming about last year. He wanted more players. All right. Tomorrow's headlines today, Niners at the Seahawks. You know, Russell Wilson, we have to talk about your BFF every weekend. Listen, when you invite him out here to L.A. and hang with him.
Starting point is 00:44:12 I better get the call call. The headline this weekend will be Jimmy G. G. Les in Seattle. Listen, sleepless in Seattle. Colin, come on. It's not a Matthew McConaughey movie, but it's a good one. Seattle's aside here. This is strange. San Francisco left for dead a couple weeks ago when the dolphins beat up on it badly. And then they run the football the next two weeks and, you know, truck the Rams and they run over the Patriots. Guess what Seattle does defensively? Top 10 run defense in the league.
Starting point is 00:44:40 And, you know, the San Francisco front seven is good. The secondary is a mass unit. Still no Richard Sherman. Russell Wilson, awful loss here feels like a lock. the way, he's 11, 4-1 against the spread in his career against San Francisco. Russell Wilson in a bounce-back spot. Remember, he had three interceptions in a primetime game. Very uncharacteristic of him. I think he really has a strong game. Seattle, big against the Niners. By the way, you like the dolphins in an upset, so do I. You like the Seahawks. So do I. Finally, tomorrow's headlines today, Cowboys at the Eagles. This could be a tough watch on Sunday night football.
Starting point is 00:45:21 The headline will be, Eagles shine once in a while. I think Philadelphia comes through here. It's not going to be pleasing to the eyes. But remember, we have not seen Colin a complete game performance out of Carson Wentz yet. It's like a great fourth quarter against the Ravens, a great fourth against the Giants last week. But he's been very uneven. and I just, I can't buy anything with Dallas right now. I've been saying on my podcast, I believe, Colin, this could be the offseason.
Starting point is 00:45:53 We see Jerry Jones maybe move on from Amari Cooper, maybe move on from Zeke Elliott. We've seen the Rams come off Todd Gurley. They're fine, okay? I think the Cowboys are a very poorly constructed team. Jerry's going to realize this fast if he hasn't already. The fire sale has begun on defense. They just don't have a lot of talent outside of the skill position players. That's not getting you anywhere.
Starting point is 00:46:15 I like the Eagles this weekend, and I like Jerry Jones to be very angry again next week come NFL time. Great stuff. Straightfire Jason McIntyre's daily podcast on IHeart Radio. Good seeing you, buddy. All right, pal, enjoy. All right. So speaking of Dallas, I just saw a story yesterday. I didn't have time to get to it. Cowboys not willing to deal Michael Gallup ahead of the trade deadline. Now they made a couple of little moves. Amari Cooper is actually not that hard to move because he's got guaranteed 20 million, but you can convert that to a signing bonus.
Starting point is 00:46:50 You can spread it out over years for a team. I think he'd be great in Green Bay. But it's interesting about this. I think Jerry Jones has a problem letting guys go that he has been given credit for. It's very easy to let, you know, Donario Poe, Everson Griffin go. He's never been given credit for that. But Jerry found Michael Gallup in the third round, and he's a good deep ball receiver. So Jerry likes to get credit for it.
Starting point is 00:47:12 Jerry drafted Zeke. Remember number four in the draft at a time. Everybody said, you can't draft a running back four. I mean, that was the narrative. You cannot draft a running back four. He led the league in rushing as a rookie. Jerry got credit for finding Dak in the fourth round. For finding Jalen Smith, remember he got injured at Notre Dame and people said,
Starting point is 00:47:30 you can't draft him. And Jerry is like, I'm going to draft him. And what do you know, he's been a good player. Jerry likes to get credit. In fact, you know, I've got a little insight on this. that was always the problem with Jimmy and Jerry is that Jimmy Johnson came in and was winning and Jerry was still more vibrant and young dynamic at the time
Starting point is 00:47:48 and he said, listen, man, I'm in my great years. This is my toy too. I want to get credit for it. And Jimmy's like, well, you're the business guy. I'm the football guy, which of course is true. But Jerry started moving over to the football sides of the operation. He didn't Jimmy's first two or three years. I mean, Jerry would stay on one side of the building.
Starting point is 00:48:05 Jimmy would stay on the other. But as they were having success, Jerry's like, Well, this is my time. I want to get some credit, too. So it was a credit argument. This is kind of what broke up the Lakers, too. Phil and Jerry West and the Riley. You know, you get to these kind of huge brands.
Starting point is 00:48:19 The Yankees have had some issues where everybody wants to get credit. That's how guys are. We're goofy. A lot of ego. And so, you know, Jerry wanted to have some fun in his prime. Get a little credit for it. And Jimmy's like, come on now. You're the business icon.
Starting point is 00:48:32 I'm the football dude. And by the way, Bill Parcell, same thing. Is that Jerry, you know, Jerry wanted to impose sort of his will and his power and get Jerry's got a problem not getting credit for some of this because he played football at Arkansas and he knows football played back in the southwestern conference. I think Arkansas was in that conference then. He wants a little credit. Jerry does no more football than most owners.
Starting point is 00:48:54 I'm not saying that. But the problem is many of the people I think they should consider moving like Amari Cooper, you know, that's another one they got credit for because remember he traded a first round pick for Amari Cooper. And everybody goes, you can't give a foot round pick for an expensive receiver. and Amari day one work with Dak. So Jerry was like, oh, Jerry is so smart. This is the problem.
Starting point is 00:49:15 I think Jerry has just got to come to terms with whether I get credit or not, I got to move Michael Gallup or I got to move Amari Cooper. I got to move two guys I got credit for because otherwise, after they get boat raced this weekend, you know, there's no turning back. You got to make moves. Trading Deadline Tuesday. Hour three, the herd coming up. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite.
Starting point is 00:49:37 on Humor Me with Robert Smygel and Friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
