Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:06 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
Starting point is 00:01:22 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
Starting point is 00:01:41 You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the
Starting point is 00:02:19 herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart radio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, here we go. It is a Monday, a beautiful Monday, on the eve of another big day. It's the herd live in Los Angeles, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. Fox Sports Radio, Iheart Radio, and right here in FS-1, it is nice to have you, and hope you had a great holiday weekend, a great Halloween weekend. It's not my favorite.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Didn't see a lot of kids. neighborhood. I didn't even see the adults with cocktails. That's usually the way you see in Manhattan Beach. I didn't see anybody. My dogs, that was about it. Good to have you enjoy. How are you? I'm great. A lot of people did like in-home trick-or-treating. It's like you just go to a different room and get candy. I don't have kids, but I have lots of nieces and nephews. And really, if you just get the candy, that's it. That seems to be the most important part of that. So I'm glad everyone had a good weekend. Yep. One hour from now, Colin Wright, Colin wrong. So listen, It's not, you win a lot of games in the NFL, you can lose a lot of games.
Starting point is 00:03:31 And right now, you know, we know who can play 7, 8, 9, 10 good teams and 7, 8, 9 junk, right? Some teams in the middle. It's sort of like sometimes how you win and how you lose. Here's the really bad news for Baltimore and the really great news for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh Steelers should have lost that game. That game went the exact way Baltimore wanted it to go. You couldn't stop the running game. They forced turnovers.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Pittsburgh couldn't move the ball. Pittsburgh couldn't run the ball. Everything. If you looked at the box score without the quarterbacks, you'd be like, oh, my Baltimore rolled them. The great news for Pittsburgh, you won that game. You won a game in which you were controlled. Time of possession.
Starting point is 00:04:13 You had two turnovers, by the way. Baltimore ran for 265 yards. When did the last time they did that and lost? But they did. And they did because of Lamar Jackson. He wasn't very good. And there were a lot of criticisms of Lamar. Jackson coming out of college. And by the way, every quarterback out of college gets criticized.
Starting point is 00:04:31 I mean, I remember when people were on Andrew Luck. I don't know about his arm. I was like, folks, it's about as good as a college quarterback is. Trevor Lawrence are starting to hear criticisms. But Lamar, people got very sensitive. And the criticisms were fair. He's an unbelievable athlete, but we know in NFL history, you got to be able to throw the ball effectively and accurately. He's struggling. We got tape. It's getting bad since week one. He's not good. He completes 57% of his throws. That's bad. That's like in the NFL right now, everybody's around 64 to 68.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Russell Wilson for a while was at 75. He's got a weird throwing motion. His accuracy is hot and cold. He is sometimes his touch is terrible. And everybody's got a book on him now. We're not saying he can't be an NFL quarterback. That's not the question. Of course he can.
Starting point is 00:05:20 But the difference is Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray are hyper-athletic. But the athleticism complements two guys that are great throwers of the football. They throw a beautiful ball. With Lamar Jackson, his athleticism is starting now to kind of define who he is. You stop that, you stop him. So there are a lot of different ways. When he came into the league, and I was one of those who questioned it. I said, I think he's a bit of a project.
Starting point is 00:05:47 I don't like his throwing motion. My takeaway was always, what's he going to be on third down? In college and high school, a quarterback, you just take off and run. on on third down. That works. In the NFL, at some point, you're going to have to sit in the pocket in third down. The coaching's way better. The athletes are way better. They're going to make you throw on third down. You don't have to in college. You don't have to in high school. You can just take off. And that was always, and I remember getting on Twitter and people, what are you saying? And I'm saying, I don't know, I watched him play in college. He ran for 200 yards in some games.
Starting point is 00:06:15 That's not going to work in the NFL. He's not a great throw over the football yet. We just have to recalibrate things, I think, on Lamar Jackson. Baltimore's still good. He's still good. He's but the whole Russell Wilson category, Mahomes category, Aaron Rogers category, and some of these new young stars. This morning, if you ask me, next 10 years, Joe Burrell, Lamar Jackson, I take Burrow. I'm recalibrating. I'm recalibrating how I think of Joe Burrow playing with nothing,
Starting point is 00:06:40 absolutely nothing, and tearing apart Tennessee's defense, and I'm recalibrating how I look at the Ravens, very good football team, and how I look at Lamar Jackson. He's struggling. Nine TDs, four picks since week one. He beat Cleveland. We know what Cleveland is. So Mike Tom and I think really touched on something with Lamar Jackson.
Starting point is 00:06:59 When he came into this league, everybody fears new in the NFL. First of all, new catches everybody off guard. The wildcat worked. Snapping a ball to a running back worked for a year. Even the Patriots tried it. So new can work in this league. And I think Lamar Jackson initially kind of scared people. It's like we, I'm not sure if we have the linebackers that can keep up with him.
Starting point is 00:07:18 I'm not sure we. I mean, there's a lot of fear. That has a lot of fear. But Mike Tom and I think touched on something. after the win, a game in which Pittsburgh should not have won on Lamar Jackson. Yeah, Mike, you don't expect Lamar Jackson to make those kind of interceptions. How big was that to change the momentum? You know, we got respect for him, but we don't fear him.
Starting point is 00:07:40 And so, you know, we're not surprised by anything that transpires. And I think that is today how I view Lamar Jackson and how the league views him. You got to respect him. He can do stuff other guys can't. But the fear part of it is like, no, no, no, no, no, no, there's a way now. Drop it into coverage, make him make throws up the guy, up the sideline, make him show some touch,
Starting point is 00:08:00 make him be an accurate thrower of the football. And I think there's now a way to make things uncomfortable for him. And he now has to recalibrate himself, get through this. A lot of young guys don't. A lot of quarterbacks, they're good. You throw up a wall, and they can never break through it.
Starting point is 00:08:18 I mean, a couple of weeks ago, we were talking about Patrick Mahomes. Everybody was like, oh, play a zone against him. play zone against Patrick Malmes. Yeah, that worked for about two weeks. And that doesn't work anymore. And for Russell Wilson, for a long time, it was like, hey, you get a spy on Russell Wilson. You just put a spy on Russell and following around the field.
Starting point is 00:08:36 And that worked for about three games. And now it doesn't work anymore. So Lamar, let's recalibrate. Let's realize that the league has kind of figured out some of his deficiencies. Can he break through it? We'll watch. Still a good team, still a good quarterback. But today, I take Burrow over Lamar next 10 years if you ask me.
Starting point is 00:08:53 All right, let's start with this. Secondly, with this. So I've watched every NFL team like you every weekend. I even sit through crappy Jag games. This is what I've paid to do. Joy and I watch bad football all the time. There are three teams in the NFL, I think, that have separated. Kansas City, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay tonight.
Starting point is 00:09:11 There is a fourth team, which I think could be better than all of them. And this is what's scary about Seattle. They are a personal foul call in Arizona from 7 and 0. and they should not be. They play in the toughest division in football. None of their running backs are healthy yesterday. They played a hyper-physical team. They have no pass rush.
Starting point is 00:09:34 And they're missing their superstar safety, who eventually, I swear, for giving up all those picks is going to be healthy. The narrative on Seattle so far, and it's fair. Boy, Russell Wilson is carrying this franchise. Yep, he is. But if Jamal Adams comes back and just is what he is, the best safety in football. If Carlos Dunlap comes in next week and is what he is,
Starting point is 00:09:57 an elite athlete defensive end, and if Chris Carson, a top 10 running back is healthy, I think I've seen the best of Pittsburgh. I've seen the best of Kansas City. I've seen the best of Tampa. I don't think I'm going to see wild, massive improvements. Seattle should not be six and one. Yesterday they're running a Miami hurricane DJ Dallas, who played by the way pretty well. played by that rookie running backs no pass rush no Jamal Adams and they are a a play a penalty away from being unbeaten I think the ceiling for Seattle is massive we came into this season saying let Russ cook I think their offensive lines better than I thought some teams we know are good green bay but they've got an unfixable hole they're not physical yesterday once again Minnesota said
Starting point is 00:10:47 we're going to run, try to stop us, Green Bay can't. Green Bay's got a hole they can't fix. They can't fix it at the trading deadline. You can just run on this team. They're a finesse football team. I think Baltimore has a hole you can't fix at the trading deadline. They're a very average passing team, especially if they trail late. Yesterday they let it half.
Starting point is 00:11:07 They trail late. They don't have a lot of time. It's not what they do well. I look at Seattle, I'm like they don't have Carlos Dunlap who'll easily be their best defensive linemen. They don't have Jamal Adams, second best player, third best player on the team. They don't have any healthy running backs. They're on rookies.
Starting point is 00:11:21 And yesterday, that game wasn't even that competitive against the best coach, I believe, young football coach in America, Kyle Shanahan, with a top five defense statistically and all sorts of playmakers. So I feel like I have seen the three best teams in the league. I kind of know what they are. Seattle is four with a chance to be better than all of them. And if you look at their schedule, what's scary for Seattle is,
Starting point is 00:11:45 boy, they got some cupcakes. They got some teams that could be trading at the trading deadline coming up. They've got some teams that aren't very good that could be resting people. Seattle has a shot going forward. Their toughest games are in division. But they got some games coming up. Seattle man, that being the number one seed. And if they become that, we know that half of the season, they didn't have Jamal Adams,
Starting point is 00:12:09 Carlos Dunlap, and hit and miss on healthy running backs. Very good football team. All right. So the question of the day, of course is what to make of Tua. What do we make of Tua? I'll have thoughts on that coming up, plus Colin Wright, Colin Wrong, top of next hour.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. Starting point is 00:12:46 Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:14:15 What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know.
Starting point is 00:14:41 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:57 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
Starting point is 00:15:42 you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast,

Rec tech grills, R-C-E-Q-C-E-Q-C-E-C-C-E-K technology, by grillers, four grillers, six-year warranty. So, if I see something, I'm going to say something. Because I don't have any fear of being wrong.
Starting point is 00:16:24 If I'm wrong, what's going to happen? Are you going to eat me? I'm fine. Okay, I don't mind being wrong. And so I remember years and years ago, I worked at the other place. Randy Moss was a patriot. And they were just crushing the league. But he'd been there a few years, and all of a sudden there was a Monday night game,
Starting point is 00:16:39 New England against Miami, and they targeted Randy Moss, time. And I came on the air Tuesday. I said he's getting traded. And I got nothing but crap. I got crap from my bosses. They're like, you just can't say that. And I said, I'm in the opinion space. He's going to get traded. You don't target Randy Moss with Tom Brady one time. They're taking him out of the playbook. John Goulet was there, my producer. John, you know what happens. What happened, John? Randy Moss got traded. Yeah. When I see stuff, I'm going to tell you, because I'm not, I don't care if I'm wrong, but I'm not going to lie. I'm not going to withhold information. So I've been thinking Tua was going to be a nice pro. And then as Joy and I do this show every day, I'm watching
Starting point is 00:17:15 all this video come in all the time of practice. And I'm thinking, okay, we're going to have a, we're going to have a debut. And I watched Justin Herbert, Big and Strong and Burrow and Josh Allen and Lamar. And I'm watching all these young quarterbacks. And they're one of two things, big men, or wildly athletic. And so I had an epiphany. I said, Tua is not going to work. He'll win games. I mean, Trubisky wins games. He's not going to be what we think he is. He's not going to be what I think he is. So yesterday he debuts. And that was my epiphany, is that he looks small, and he doesn't have a dynamic arm, and the coaching staff protected him, and they had eight first downs and 90 net passing yards,
Starting point is 00:17:53 and he was bad on third down, and they almost never maintained drives. I'm not making a judgment just off one game, but when I see stuff, I'm going to say stuff. And I watch Joe Burrow and his everything about him I like, and he's got an okay arm, but he's dynamic. He moves around. I see Herbert. He had a terrible pick yesterday. Herbert makes huge mistakes, but I see dynamic. And I never saw Andrew Luck, Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, well, I did a little bit.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert. I don't feel like their coaches are protecting him. And I kind of feel like yesterday they just protected him. And I don't think you do that if you're at practice and you see him and you think, just let him go. Now the next two weeks he takes on Justin Herbert and Kyler Murray or Kyler Murray and Justin Herbert and that or will know. a lot more then. We'll know a lot more then. But this is, when I watched it yesterday,
Starting point is 00:18:46 Tua is going to win games. That's not the point here. This is a really good coaching staff. And this was a perfect game. I predicted Miami would beat the Rams. I said, this is a bad spot for the Rams. Short week, Monday night football, 3,000 mile flight, early 10 o'clock Pacific window. That's a terrible spot for a football team. Miami was off a bite. Miami got eight to 10 more days of prep for this game. a terrible spot to go up against Brian Flores. You're not going to win that game. Not a lot of teams are going to win that game. Pittsburgh probably wins it.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Kansas City wins it. Rams aren't going to win that game. So I picked Miami. But that two-a-thing, that's what I saw. I see small. I don't see dynamic. I think in this league you've got to be one or two things. You've got to be like 28 of the 30 best quarterbacks I've seen in my life for big men.
Starting point is 00:19:34 I'm 6-2. They're taller than me slightly or above. Aaron Rogers is on the small end, 6-2 and a half. half. They're big men. And if they're not, Fran Tarkin and Russell Wilson, Michael Vick, they run around like crazy, open up passing lanes. The only exception is Drew Breeze. And boy, you're asking a lot for a college kid to come into the NFL and say, all right, you're small and not very mobile. You've got to be Drew Breeze to win. That's asking a lot. That is like landing, you know, that's like throwing out a quarter and telling a, you know, an airplane to land on it.
Starting point is 00:20:07 You know, it's not the easiest spot to land on. So maybe I'm wrong. But this news came out yesterday. This news came out yesterday. Adam Schaefter reported what we had been talking about for months. Why did Miami sit red-hot veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick? Because Miami's got Houston's first round pick and it's a top five pick. And they're going to move if Tua after eight games doesn't have it.
Starting point is 00:20:36 It's not about winning. It's not about stats. Burroughs not winning every week. Herbert's not winning much. It's not about that. It's about it. Lamar's got some it. Josh Allen's got some it.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Even Drew Locke's got some it. Does Tua have it? I saw yesterday it looked like what I worried about. Not a lot of it there. Very tightly coached and prepared and protected. That's what I saw. Joy with the news. No.
Starting point is 00:21:05 Turn on the news. This. is the herd line news. While the Eagles remain at top the NFC East after a hideous win over the Cowboys. Do they win any other way? I mean, that game was something. Carson Wentz committed four turnovers, boosting his total giveaways this season to 16, which is the most in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:21:27 But the Cowboys couldn't get anything done offensively with third string quarterback Van Danucci. We knew that, yeah. And had to settle for three field goals and at least, at all at least 49 yards long. in the 23 to 9 loss. Yeah, it was ugly. We were saying, joking about it in our staff meeting this morning.
Starting point is 00:21:44 In their last 12 games, they're 7, 4 and 1. I mean, with catastrophic injuries, I can't think of any other win. They all look like this. Like, this is how Philadelphia now is basically winning, which is we're just bailing water
Starting point is 00:21:57 and trying to keep the boat afloat to shore. But this was bad. This was bad, but the cowboys were just way worse. I mean, you know, Ben Danucci tried. It's just what it is. They're not a great football team. And what was already not great got much, much worse.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Now, if you look at the NFC East, the Eagles are at top of NFC East at 3, 4 and 1. Then Washington is in second place with 2 and 5, Cowboys 2 and 6, and the Giants 1 in 6. So, I mean, it's a disaster of a division, as we know. But Philadelphia is going to win that. Yes, it's looking like that's going to be the case. Not just because the record is when I watch them, Lane Johnson's coming back, Miles Sanders, Zach Hertz. They're all coming back here soon. Well, they're finding ways to win.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Like, I mean, that's pretty tough game to lose yesterday, but they certainly, they certainly tried with four turnovers. Well, the first half, they really tried hard. Yes. What's going to be interesting to me is when Andy Dalton comes back. Because there is still a significant amount of football left to play. This still could come down to the wire in this division because it is so bad, but that was, that was catastrophic.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Zeke had 19 carries for 63 yards and one reception for 10 yards. I knew she was 21 to 40, 180 yards, two fumbles, and was sacked four times. It just was an ugly game. So Cam Newton had the Patriots in position to tie the game late and potentially go to overtime with the bills, but fumbled. This allowed Buffalo to take a knee and hang on to the 24-21 win.
Starting point is 00:23:20 And after the game, Cam spoke about his frustration following his game-ending stake. It affects me more of that, you know, I still am jeopardizing this team's success because of my lackluster performances of protecting the football. So, you know, coach trust me with the ball of my hands, and I wouldn't want it any other way, and I just have to do a better job with protecting it. It was really rough ending.
Starting point is 00:23:46 By the way, I know nobody cares about Buffalo outside of Buffalo. You can't put that New England team away. They've got nothing left. I watched that game. I didn't, I thought less of Buffalo. Yeah. You got a good team thumps New England. Is Belichick that good of a coach?
Starting point is 00:24:04 Well, I mean, it is a division game. So sometimes those just are unexplainable. But I'm with you. I thought this was less about obviously like cam fumbling in that fashion when you have a cheats. Like that's devastating. Listen, we know what New England is. They're rebooting for the draft. We know what they are now.
Starting point is 00:24:22 I thought I learned more about Buffalo yesterday. Buffalo was like, I'm sorry, but that you're a cam fumble from losing to a team. Edelman, Gilmore, eight opt-outs. It's like, sorry. I mean, I don't know what happened to Buffalo. at about week five, but like they're not Super Bowl bubble. They're, they're, I'm, the way Miami's playing right now,
Starting point is 00:24:40 they're not winning that division. I don't know if I'm ready to go that far because I need to see more in the next couple weeks from Tua with that change. But yeah, I mean, they're not, they're not playing the same way they were at the beginning of the season. Dalvin Cook put on a show in his first game back
Starting point is 00:24:53 from going injury. He scored four touchdowns on 226 total yards from scrimmage and gave the Vikings their second win of the year. Look at these holes. Joy, how do you create a, a five to six foot hole routinely against Green Bay. Well, the Packers rushing defense is 15th in the league. They're allowing 119 yards per game.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Dalvin Cook is very good. Like when he's healthy, like that's what he's capable of doing. Aaron Rogers connected with Devonte Adams for three touchdowns throughout the game and had a chance for Hail Mary at the end of the game, but the Vikings forced to fumble with 12 seconds left, securing the 28 to 22 win. But I think I'm starting to, again, division games. game, so I don't want to get crazy.
Starting point is 00:25:35 That's right. Green Bay's got a hole. I'm with you. By the way, Dalvin Cook's a fascinating player. Not the fastest back. Not the strongest back. Not the shiftyest back. But when he is healthy, I think he's the best back.
Starting point is 00:25:50 And I don't know how to explain it. Like, it would be if Mahomes was the best quarterback and you're like, he's not the biggest. He didn't have the best arm. Usually with quarterback, you have to have something that we're like, okay, you can't, you can't even define what my... Delvin Cook's a fascinating player. There's everybody in the league does something a little better.
Starting point is 00:26:04 Maybe it's because he's an A minus at everything. But every time I watch him when he's healthy, he's the best football player on the field. He has the potential to go off like that. And I think I'm with you, I think that Green Bay's hole is physicality. Like, it's not even debatable. When they lose, like, that's what happens. When I watched that game, I was taken back by how large the holes were. They were five and six feet.
Starting point is 00:26:29 It's like there is a way to play Green Bay. and we keep seeing physical teams do it over and over again. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Ly News. Let's bring in Michael Vick, 13 years in the NFL and a four-time Pro Bowl. And we've talked a lot about quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:26:49 I said, what worries me about Tua is that he is smaller but doesn't have any wiggle. And like if I compared him to Mike Vick, Mike had a bigger arm and Mike was much more electric. If Mike couldn't move around like Mike and was Mike Vick's height, Mike Vick wouldn't have been Mike Vick. When you're smaller, you have trouble with passing lanes. You got to give me some special arm escapability. Mike Vick now joining us, brought to you by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing. And I said this, it is, I said this last week.
Starting point is 00:27:19 The history of the NFL is, Michael, if you would have been three inches taller, are you six feet tall, six feet about? Barely. Okay. Five, eleven, three-quarters. Okay. So if you were... Give me six feet, though, I'd take it.
Starting point is 00:27:31 But if you were six three with your escapeability, let's be honest. It would have been easier to pass. I watched Tua. And so I don't get the size. I don't get the huge arm. I don't get the escapeability. I know I'm a little bit. I know it's a game.
Starting point is 00:27:50 I'm not, it's not the end of it. But do you see when you see Tua? You know what? I really sazz them up. yesterday and, you know, it's funny. You look totally different when you're in an NFL uniform that you're doing in college uniform when I, you know, looked at tour at first glance. I was like, he looked a little small, looked a little frail. You need to get his guns up a little bit. So I was a little worried, you know, the fact that Aaron Donald was on the other side in his debut.
Starting point is 00:28:19 I'm like, you know, he sort of looked apart, but he don't. And I know I know his height. I met him before, you know, and like I said, I, you know, I sized them up. And, you know, usually when I meet, you know, mobile quarterbacks, you know, I always look at their frame and what they're working with because it determines, you know, how long they're going to last. Yeah. And some frames bigger than others. So, you know, when I first looked at two, I was like, you know, you got to gain a little weight, you know, he's got to get stronger. You've got to get ready for the NFL pounding. Yeah. No, I mean, it's really how I looked at him. Your first glance at something, it matters.
Starting point is 00:28:59 Like, you know, you fall in love with people in 30 seconds or, you know, whatever it is. First glance matters. And my first glance is, doesn't look very big, not real dynamic, looks a little small. Now, let's go to a friend of yours, Lamar Jackson. Since week one, he's struggling. And we know we've seen him pass the ball. We've seen it. We know he's dynamic.
Starting point is 00:29:18 He's got a lot of it. He can make play. He is a playmaker. But he is not the same in the last five to six weeks, Mike. if you talk to him, what do you think is going on with Lamar Jackson? I usually leave guys alone this time of the year because, you know, playing a quarterback position, it's so personal between you and your coaches and you got so much going through your head that, you know, the last person you want talking is somebody who has played the game
Starting point is 00:29:43 and is trying to tell you what to do because I'm not in that meeting room. I'm not in that film room. But I do see Lamar having to improve in a lot of different areas. You know, and obviously that's up to the coaches. I think the scheme and what they're doing, you know, teams are, you know, watching them close and especially the better teams. They want to get in their ads and they find their ways to shut down what they do best. So, you know, Lamar's going to be challenged moving forward.
Starting point is 00:30:12 He's going to have to make players in the passing game. And, you know, you've got to start to take advantage of those eight-man boxes that you're getting. Because I know the boxes are being crowded for the run game. So it's up to the coaches to make this right for Lamar. And, you know, I always say this, you know, good coaches make great players greater. And this is what has to happen. Like you say, he has the if factor. You got to get all of it out of him.
Starting point is 00:30:36 I like that. That's good. So maybe it's because I'm from Seattle. But about three or four years ago, I said, we have paid so much attention to Seattle's defense and Pete Carroll and the fans. There were so many big brands around Russell that it's really Russell's team. and the kid's just unbelievable. But we've never seen anything like him, so there's no prototype for him. So we don't just put our arms around him.
Starting point is 00:31:01 I'm watching him yesterday. In the red zone, I'm not sure I've ever seen a football player in my life in the red zone like him. I don't know how you defend him in the red zone. He is so smart. He's twitch. He's mentally twitchy. He's physically twitchy. By the way, you and him are almost identical sizes.
Starting point is 00:31:20 Is there anything you watch with Russell Wilson and you think to you think, yourself, oh, I wish, I'm a little jelly of that. I'm a little jealous of that. Is there anything with, what do you see when you watch him? First off, you know, Russ is one of one. And I think we had this conversation before, Colin, you know, we talked, you know, just in general conversation. But, you know, when I watch Russ, and I said it a couple months ago, you know, I think on your show, you know, my son is going to watch a lot of Russell Wilson film. You know, his feel for the game is just so uncanny. It's nothing that he don't see. It's
Starting point is 00:31:58 nothing that he can't do. He has vision, and you talk about passing lanes earlier. He creates him. You know, his mobility is on another level, and he's just one of a kind. I mean, we'll never probably see another guy like Russell Wilson
Starting point is 00:32:14 at the quarterback position in the next 50 years of football. Everybody has their own statue, their own look, you know, and play the game their way. And this guy is doing it his way and, you know, he's going to continue to do it. He'll be, he'll play until his 40s, no doubt. Yeah. So then last night, we watched Carson Wentz, and I like Carson Wentz. And the staff always makes fun of me because I don't hold interceptions against quarterbacks too much. I think
Starting point is 00:32:39 if you're a playmaker, you know, like Baltimore, yesterday Lamar had too many. But, you know, I'm not going to crush a guy for a bad pick. But I watch Carson Wentz. And I think I'm the only one of my staff that likes him now. He makes, he's been in the league too long to make some of these mistakes, but then I watch him and I'm like in the last 12 games, he's seven, four and one, and they got nothing, I mean, they're missing their best offensive linemen, their best back, their best tied in, two of their best receivers. Where are you at having, having played in Philadelphia, having seen him play 50 games, where are you at on Carson wins? I really think Carson is winning that city over, just, you know, with his grit.
Starting point is 00:33:20 You know, and his resilience. He's staying, you know, connected to the game. He's staying involved. He's giving it everything he got. And if there's one person who appreciates that, it is me. No, I wasn't always on the most talented teams earlier in my career. I wasn't in the best game. But I never complained, and I just went out there and played.
Starting point is 00:33:41 And we never hear this guy complain, you know, take his bumps and bruises. And, you know, I look at Carson Winters as a winning quarterback. I mean, the year they won the Super Bowl, he compiled up, you know, nine and ten wins, and he deserved as much credit for that Super Bowl win as anybody. You know, I wouldn't say as much as Nick Foes, but, you know, without being 10 and O,
Starting point is 00:34:04 it wouldn't have been as easy to take over this team. So, you know, this guy's done some great things. I think he's a winner. I think when the Philadelphia Eagles sit back and look at this pick and what has transpired with cost and wins, they can feel good about it moving forward and they can continue to build around this guy. By the way, as a former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback,
Starting point is 00:34:25 when you watch Patrick Mahomes, I mean, do you just laugh at it? Like, what do you make of it? And you also are buddies with Andy Reeves. I don't even have to watch Patrick Mahomes anymore. I don't even... Look, I'm watching Patrick in the postseason only moving forward. Like, we know if Patrick and the Kansas City Chiefs,
Starting point is 00:34:41 son, Buffalo, you don't have to watch it. You know what you're going to get. You know, you got to cut the TV, when they're playing somebody like Seattle, and this is a money night game or a sunny night game or, you know, Fox in 430. You know, I mean, you just know what you're going to get out of this guy. And it's almost unfair, but you've got to appreciate what he's doing for the game.
Starting point is 00:35:05 He's so good, you know, he's so talented, big-time arm. There's nothing he can't do. I mean, similar to Russell Wilson, they're like, you know, he's one of one if you ask me. and he's going to continue to get better. As long as Andy Reed is by his side, Mike Kaffkin, he's going to be one of the best, you know, his position, respect. Good senior Michael, Vic.
Starting point is 00:35:29 Also joins me Fox NFL kickoff on Sunday. We'll talk soon, Mike. Talk to you soon. Thanks, having it. All right. Coming up next, I thought it was John Gruden's best moment as an NFL coach cinches return. And I'll tell you why.
Starting point is 00:35:44 And some thoughts on the great thing. about Mahomes beyond the fact, beyond the fact he's an amazing talent. The best part about where Patrick Mahomes is actually helping everybody else in the league, that's coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do a little kill? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:37:52 Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Now you're finishing that sentence.
Starting point is 00:38:21 Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

And we don't know when we've done
Starting point is 00:39:04 enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you're you here on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keir Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing,

Casper Mattress, 1,500 perforations create a cooling system so effective, you won't be awake to notice. Casper.com, only at casper.com. So yesterday, the Browns hosted the Raiders.
Starting point is 00:39:51 The weather was terrible. And generally when we watch football games, it's one quarterback outduling another quarterback. Or it's Delvin Cook takes over the game. Yesterday, John Gruden beat Kevin Stefansky. I'm not going to give Derek Carr credit for the win or criticize Baker Mayfield for losing it. The Raiders had four drives of 12 plays or longer.
Starting point is 00:40:16 When you go on the road, you're off a blowout loss. The weather takes away your passing game. You're facing a very talented team on their turf. Two great running teams. One ran it brilliantly. Only one of them was great on third down. Only one of them owned time of possession. Only one of them had five or fewer penalties.
Starting point is 00:40:39 I'm not going to give Baker-Mayfield heat or Derek Carr a lot of credit. That was about coaching. That was about game planning, execution. Third down, it was about situational football. That's why you pay John Gruden $100 million. That he goes up against a rookie coach, and I felt Gruden won the game. And it may not happen a lot. I thought last year when Tennessee played Baltimore, I thought Mike Vrable had a great day as a coach.
Starting point is 00:41:07 and you get those days. I thought Kyle Shanahan a couple of weeks ago against the Rams had a great day as a coach. And coaches like players have off Sundays. But that's a big win. And I'll tell you something about the Raiders. They may not be able to string three or four wins against great teams together.
Starting point is 00:41:26 But we're going to look back at that game in Cleveland. We're going to look back in about two months. And they're going to end up being in the playoffs. The Raiders are going to make the playoffs. And they're going to make it by a game. and this is going to be it. Remember that game in Cleveland? You couldn't throw a football.
Starting point is 00:41:42 You couldn't land a plane. I mean, they're calling traffic, air traffic controllers. Circle the airport. We can't land the plane. That was an impressive win because nothing was there for you. Nothing was given. You had to ditch your passing game of which you've got nothing but talent. But in this game and both, you know, listen, Baker had a lot of drops from his receivers.
Starting point is 00:42:00 It wasn't all Baker's issue. But I'm not going to give Baker the heat. That was literally a veteran coach outdueling a very smart. young coach Gruden after. I can't explain it. You know, you thought when you were going one direction, you were with the wind, and then maybe you were against the wind, but the wind was against everybody, Cleveland and Las Vegas all day today.
Starting point is 00:42:21 Credit to Carlson for being able to kick the ball and make some field goals. I thought Derek threw the ball intermediately pretty good, but it was a real obstacle for the kickers and the quarterbacks for sure. You know, I think the Raiders are the one team. in the league that they're good enough to make the playoffs. They're not good enough to win a bunch of games in the playoffs, but they could also beat everybody. I don't believe, they've already beaten the Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:42:50 They could beat anybody in the league. Philadelphia is good enough to win a playoff game, sneak in. They're not good enough to beat everybody. Green Bay is not good enough to beat everybody. And Green Bay may be better than the Las Vegas Raiders, but I honestly believe they're the only team in the NFL today that could beat anybody on any Sunday. But they're not good enough to win like two or three or four playoff games in a row.
Starting point is 00:43:13 But that, to me, I had big questions about Gruden when he came back. Who takes 10 years off any industry comes back in his elite? It just doesn't happen. But that was coaching yesterday. That was great. So Patrick Mahomes is now officially silly. 21 touchdowns one pick. Passer ratings 115.
Starting point is 00:43:30 It's obscene. I mean, it just doesn't even make any sense. And, I mean, yesterday they were good on third down. they dominate time of possession. Here's one of the things I love about great. It creates clarity. So when New England ran the NFL, they told you for 20 years the only way to beat them in big games.
Starting point is 00:43:50 You had to get pressure on Tom Brady, like big pressure, and you had to play almost flawless football because they were so smart. And one team, one team did it twice, New York Giants with Tom Coughlin. In both games against the Patriots in the Super Bowl, they got massive pressure on Brady, made him uncomfortable. And in the two Super Bowls, 2007, 2011, they had eight total penalties and one total turnover. And they still barely won. They barely beat the Patriots twice.
Starting point is 00:44:20 When greatness, the Patriots told you, this is the only way you're going to beat us consistently. And the Giants did it twice. You've got to get after Tom, like really after him. And you can't have a lot of turnovers, probably none. And you can't have a lot of penalties. Probably four. and the Giants did it twice and went 2-0 against Belichick and Brady and the Super Bowls. Kansas City is now doing the same.
Starting point is 00:44:44 This is what greatness does. And it's actually doing the rest of the league of favor. Kansas City is saying like, you can only beat us in a blowout. You have to be super offensively. So if you've got Kirk Cousins, that will not be good enough, Minnesota. You've got a draft in our quarterback. You have Baker Mayfield, that will not be good enough. if you look around the league right now do you have Philip Rivers
Starting point is 00:45:08 no that won't be good enough they're telling you you can do it with a big band you can do it with the Rogers or Russell Wilson there'll be a handful of guys you can do it with but when you have great it just clears the room out like this is how you're going to beat us by the way what's really scary obviously with Kansas City is since week 12 of last year only Baltimore's got a better defense so now their defense is good but but I always said this with Andrew Luck. He did everybody a favor. Andrew Luck is like, oh, you can be this good as a rookie with this crappy of a football team. Okay, you can do it. You can't tell me you can't do it. So that's the bar. Andrew Luck for a
Starting point is 00:45:48 rookie quarterback, that's the bar. You can win 11 games with two pro bowlers. That's the bar. New England. Here's the bar. You've got to get pressure on time. If Tom's comfortable, you'll never beat us. And then you have to play a totally clean football game. In all the years, only one team was able to beat him in a Super Bowl, Philadelphia, which didn't play good defense, which didn't get pressure on Brady, but, you know, beats him with trick plays and playing great at the end of the game. But when I look at Kansas City, you're going to beat them one way for the next 10 years, barring catastrophic injuries with Andy Reed and Patrick O'Honnes.
Starting point is 00:46:20 You got to score 32. That's just it. 33, 34, 35. That's how you're going to beat them. I mean, maybe you'll get a weather break and you'll play a game like Cleveland Raiders yesterday where the weather is 35, but that's an out. liar. That won't beat for the next 14 years. That's not going to happen many times. And that may happen. You may get a game where it's 35 miles an hour. You're Tennessee. You come in,
Starting point is 00:46:40 you run. Derek Henry, they can't get the ball back. That'll happen. And Philadelphia did beat New England in a Super Bowl once. But I mean, that is, they're just telling you right now. And I think it's a big favorite. You're going to have to have, if you have a young quarterback, he's got to have some Lamar, he's got to have some Herbert. He's got to have some Burrow. At least got to have some Derek Carr. Like, that's the way you're going to beat him. And by the way, Derek Carr did beat him. And had a great run. game. But he's, this is just, just totally different level. 21 touchdowns one pick. I mean, no preseason, you know, again, hasn't been, they've had injuries, has not been perfect.
Starting point is 00:47:17 Yeah, they're like big 12 numbers, right, college numbers. That's what you get when you're, Heisman numbers, just totally different. Colin Wright, Colin wrong, top of the hour. You know, it's, I don't have a ton of college football. today. I will say this about Jim Harbaugh. People love to just give me crap about Jim Harbaugh. I know it. It hasn't gone as well as I thought. First of all, congratulations to Michigan State and Mel Tucker. It's a great win for Mel. I know Mel. I like Mel. He did a good job at Colorado. He's going to be a nice fit there. He's going to win seven, eight, nine games there. He's going to be a great fit. Here's a thing about Harbaugh. Is that Harbaugh made himself such a target that we think he's a massive
Starting point is 00:47:58 failure. He's not going to get fired in Michigan. They're not going to fire. Nobody's going to get fired this year with COVID because all these colleges are out of money because of all the COVID testing. So even the Ohio states of the world don't have a surplus of cash on him. So he's not going to get fired. But I think there are things to be learned in life. Like, you know, making yourself a target the biggest contract. You take your team to Europe. You talk some trash.
Starting point is 00:48:23 You know, I think Jim's become a huge target. And let's be honest, he can't beat Michigan State and he can't beat Ohio State. He's not going to get fired. but yeah he's not as good as I thought I thought he'd win nine games and I thought they'd beat I thought they'd dominate Michigan State I did not think they beat Ohio State much I think Ohio State's a much better program
Starting point is 00:48:42 Ohio State history of the program you know if they have the wrong coach even the wrong coach usually wins eight nine games at Ohio State but I can I can acknowledge it has not been it's been a little bumpier than I thought hour two Trent Dilfer Colin Wright Colin wrong next
