This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged.
It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque.
Others say it's unleashing human potential.
Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes
for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app,
Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
For 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care what you're saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show.
This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated. So let's get to it.

Live in Los Angeles, this is The Herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening.
Fox Sports Radio, Iheart Radio, right here on FS1, one hour from now.
The herd hierarchy.
the strangest hurt hierarchy of the year.
I am not sure who the 10 best teams in the NFL are.
I'm going to give you my 10, and in one hour you'll get those.
Joy Taylor is joining me today on Election Day Tuesday.
We're going to talk to football today.
I hope that's enough.
We have everybody in.
That's what we do here.
That's what we do.
We talk sports.
We're going to talk about football today.
There's a lot of really fascinating topics today.
Yeah, I have a feeling like I might be upset with you after your –
your hierarchy. I'm going to wait and see.
All right. So let's start with this.
On a day of anxiety in America,
there's a lot of anxiety
in America. 77% of a people
are worried in America about violence
tonight. Cross your fingers.
It doesn't happen. But I want to be Mr.
optimistic for one city today
and it happens to be
a really important city
and the biggest city in this country, New York.
You should actually feel great this morning.
I know, I know, I know, I know.
You lost a football game to a better team.
Now let's start with this.
That was not pass interference.
You're not going to get the flag on that.
Daniel Jones, quarterback for the Giants, was late on that pass.
He was late.
You got to make a better quicker throw.
And you're not going to get that.
There's a reason they do not throw a penalty flag on Hail Mary's at the end of games.
There's a reason on the last shot of the NBA finals,
refs try to step out of the way.
That's not egregious enough.
It's too bang, bang.
It's too close.
Your quarterback was a tad late.
That's the bad news.
Now the good news.
That was the best loss for the New York.
York Giants in years.
You're getting better every week.
It looks like you have a coach who the players like and respond to.
And Daniel Jones makes too many mistakes, but I'm about 80% sure you got a quarterback
good enough to eventually win this division.
This is a great loss.
What you really are, you're the Miami Dolphins of last year.
They started the year 0-and-7.
Joy and I kept saying, they were a really good O'N7.
They got crushed by Baltimore week one.
every week it got better.
You watch the Dolphins this year?
Pretty good.
They got the right coach.
Cross your fingers on the quarterback.
The Giants are well coached.
The Giants play hard every week.
The last four weeks, they have lost by 8-3-1-2.
Now, Daniel Jones makes too many mistakes.
He makes about three mistakes a game.
Can you get that down to two?
Two, you can win the NFC East, maybe even this year.
One, you have a chance to be a really good playoff team.
And you're doing all of this without sake one.
Barclay. But there's two things in the NFL you have to have. You don't have to be great at safety.
You don't have to be great at wide receiver. Patriots want a lot of Super Bowls not being great at
wide receiver. You don't have to have a dominating offensive line. You got to have a coach
and you got to have a quarterback in this league. And I said this last year with Brian Flores of the
Dolphins and I'll say it with Joe Judge. I think he got a coach. I think he works. I think the team
responds to him. I think they play hard. When I watch the New York Giants play, mistakes beat
them. But it's not incompetence. It's not lack of direction. It's not that you got the players are all
going and different. I get the same effort from that team every week. I think they could have won three
of their last four games. They don't have Seguan Barclay. He's their playmaker. They got to go get
another playmaker or two on the outside. They got to get Sequan Barclay back. I think they could
have one more great corner. But I would feel great this morning. Tampa Bay beat you. Tampa Bay should
beat you. They got a better quarterback. They have a better roster. They're adding a
B. And it was a classic look-ahead game for Tampa Bay where they got the Saints next week.
I said it yesterday on the shows. I liked the New York Giants last night to cover.
I thought it was your classic home dog.
Biggest game of the year for the New York Giants felt huge.
And for Tampa, they're looking ahead to the Saints.
So I said yesterday, I thought this was a good bet on the New York Giants.
So Buccaneer fans, you're going to be way better next week.
You're going to roll the Saints. You'll feel great.
But I wake up in New York this morning.
If I'm a Giants fan, I'm like, that's as good a loss as we have had in years.
You got the coach, and I'm 80% sure you got the quarterback.
That's a great place to be in the NFL because you don't have to be perfect.
With the salary cap, there are no 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers.
That doesn't exist in the NFL.
Your receivers, you need about one more.
Keep building that all line.
Coach, quarterback, good enough.
I'd feel great this morning.
And I believe when they're focused, Tampa Bay is the first or second best team in the NFL.
So you lost late to what I believe is a Super Bowl team.
and the best team in the NFC.
Good morning in New York despite the loss, optimism on an anxiety-ridden day.
All right, now let's shift gears.
Just because your career can end in one city doesn't mean your career is over.
I've worked in the media for a long time just because you leave one place and infuriate a boss or it doesn't quite work.
Doesn't mean your career's over.
People reinvent themselves and pivot all the time.
Jimmy Garoppolo is hurt again.
He's going to miss multiple weeks.
and I'm just going to say it now.
It's over for Jimmy Garoppolo in San Francisco.
There are three things as a quarterback that will end your career for one team.
You're inconsistent.
Garapolo is.
The coach has lost faith in you.
The coach has, and you can't stay healthy.
He's done in San Francisco.
Everybody's done before they know they're done.
Does it mean he's done in the NFL?
I think New England is going to make a run out.
him. But Kyle Shanahan is in a division with Russell Wilson who is never injured, with
Kyler Murray, who you can never get a big hit on, and Jared Goff, say what you want, he's
never hurt. And Garoppolo cannot stay healthy. He got hurt in New England. He got hurt his first
year in San Francisco as a full-time starter, and he's hurt now. It's over. Kyle Shanahan would be
idiotic to run this back. It doesn't mean his career's over. By the way, you know who I think they're
going to go after? Two people. Matt Ryan, probably too expensive. Or Sam Darnold. I think Sam
Darnold, for the Colts, for Washington, and specifically San Francisco, I know they like
Donald. I know they liked him in the draft. I know they like him. I know the Colts like him.
I think Washington likes him. It doesn't mean Jimmy Garapolo's career is over. But when you're in a
city and you're inconsistent and the coach loses faith, and you can't argue either of those,
and now you're hurt all the time.
And again, you have to consider the environment with this stuff.
Russell Wilson never gets hit.
Kyler Murray rarely gets hit.
Gough gets hit all week.
Never gets hurt.
You can't, nothing against Nick Mullins,
but I can't be going to a backup quarterback every third game.
So this is done.
And the other thing is,
I think Kyle Shanahan lost faith in Garoppolo at the end of last year.
And it's one of these like,
okay, got us to the Super Bowl, what do we do?
But in a weird way, you got a break.
Now, when you move off him, it's not a big cap hit.
It's not a huge cap hit.
And let's be honest, you could tell Kyle lost faith in him.
This gives you the out.
Nobody's going to argue now when you're like,
injuries.
Shanahan's going to have the media in the Bay Area on his side.
You know, look at this.
Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, Jared Gough.
that's the division you got to be healthy my guy can't stay healthy and we have we have a trend you know like
i've said before uh you you burn me once shame on you you burn me twice shame on me i mean Kyle Shanahan's
the best young football coach in my opinion in America what's the old Einstein thing you're
crazy if you keep going back to the same thing and doing it over and over and over and over and over
we have three injuries now with Garoppolo you got three Sam bradford I feel bad I think new
England could give him a run. New England has a history of very good offensive line play.
You know, Belichick is going to play good defense and protect his quarterbacks.
I mean, that's kind of what they do, and they know Garoppolo, and they like Garoppolo, and maybe
they'll be too good to get a top three quarterback in the draft.
And we know the history of Garapolo in New England.
But when I looked at this injury, I'm like, okay, it's over.
I've said this before in broadcasting and in quarterbacks.
Like, it's over before anybody admits it's over.
We said this with Mitch Trubisky.
Trivisky had a winning record.
And I said, they've made their mind up.
They're not telling us.
They're saying all the right things in the press, but they made their mind up.
And the minute Trisky struggled, boom, Nick Folls in.
All right.
They could certainly bring, they lose it now in Chicago some games.
They could bring Trubisky back, but I think that made their mind up.
So that's the story of the day.
Be optimistic in New York and the Sam Darnold sweepstakes.
At least the phone calls are beginning in earnest because the jets are going to move
off it.
the Jets are a bad franchise.
The answer for bad franchises, Cleveland's done this historically, is a quick fix.
Yeah, we'll just get the quarterback, right?
We'll win a bunch of games.
That's how the New York Jets think.
That's how the Jets.
Oh, just get a quarterback.
I'll solve all our problems.
Your offensive line's bad.
You have no receivers you can trust.
Your defense doesn't have an edge rusher.
C.J. Mosley can never play, but you pay them a ton.
You know, good luck.
But that's what I see this morning.
All right, coming up next,
in the history of my career,
I will defend Aaron Rogers
for something more than I've ever defended him.
I'm going to defend Aaron Rogers.
All the cheeseheads,
like a quarterback.
I'm going to defend him
more than any sportscaster or sports writer
will defend him over the next 24 hours.
Okay?
And I won't even get political with it.
You got enough of that today.
Got enough politics today for everybody.
Herd hierarchy, top of next hour.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on The Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down,
and try to make sense of how we survived it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill,
waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84's big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross.
Because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different.

Rec tech grills built by grillers for grillers, smart grill technology. You can turn it on from your
phone. It's Wi-Fi capable is what they call it. It's great to have you. And I have been
through the years, many believe a little tough on Aaron Rogers. Not really, it's called occasional
constructive criticism, but hey, who am I other than America's media icon? Anywho, Aaron Rogers' trading
deadline today was asked a very good question. Are you guys going to go and get some help at
wide receiver? And Aaron Rogers, a little snarky maybe, but he said this. It's not a bad question,
but it's not one that I can answer. We've had many conversations about this type of thing over the
years. And I, you know, truly understand my role. I'm not going to stop for anybody.
Last time I'm a stop for a player. You end up going to Buffalo. That's kind of funny, actually.
I'm going to defend him. Okay. So one of the things Aaron has said privately to people I know,
he doesn't say it publicly, is it'd be nice to have Tom Brady's defense once in a while.
He's not wrong. He's not wrong on that.
He's told people, you know, it'd be nice to be a little more active in the free agent market.
He's not wrong.
I'm not going to ever criticize Aaron Rogers for being accurate.
But I'll give you an example.
Here's what Tom Brady got when he went to Tampa.
So Tom goes to Tampa.
They got him Gronk Hall of Fame Tide End who still can play.
Leonard Fernette, who I said at the time, why is everybody out on Leonard Fernette?
Leonard Fernette's a good player.
And Antonio Brown, maybe you've heard of all three of them.
their Hall of Fame or close talents.
Then they went and got Tristan Worf's, who is a hit at right tackle,
Antonio Winfield, who may be defensive rookie of the year,
and Kishon Vaughner running back, who can play,
but on this roster it's so stacked, he's a developmental player.
Here's what Aaron Rogers got this offseason.
Devin Funches, oh, he opted out, and two guys that don't make a difference.
Jordan Love isn't playing.
A.J. Dillon appears not to be able to play,
and a tight end with one catch, a blocking tight end.
they whiffed on the draft.
Made a couple calls, looked around on Green Bay's draft today.
It's a whiff.
No dynamic players.
Not one.
Not one dynamic free agent.
We opted out, and he was marginally dynamic.
Aaron's 37.
37 in a month.
He needs playmakers now, not developmental players.
He needs guys.
I'm not even going to mention the fact they didn't resign Blake Martinez, a tackling machine.
Or Brian Beluga, who was an expensive right tackle.
Chargers picked him up.
There was another linebacker that Giants have,
Kyler Fackerel, who's pretty good to get into the quarterback, athletic.
I won't even mention those.
Oh, I just did.
But Russell Wilson's getting help.
And Lamar Jackson gets help.
And guys are getting help.
You whiff, apparently, you got a bunch of guys who either can't play,
aren't playing, or will never play in the draft.
And he didn't do anything in free agency.
And some of that's not your fault.
It's institutional.
but you've got to give Aaron Rogers a pass on this.
If I'm Aaron Rogers, I am sitting out there and I can be petty too.
I'm like, it'd be nice to get an occasional free agent like Tommy.
It'd be nice to get an, I mean, can you imagine me and Aaron Rogers looking at Brady?
So I get Belichick's defense for 20 years, then I go to Tampa and I may get the best defense in the league now.
And again, NFL quarterbacks are trapped.
You can franchise him.
Aaron couldn't get out of Green Bay today if he wanted to.
And I'm not saying he wants to.
But when it's all said and done on Aaron, we got to be fair about that.
And I've said this when you write the book on LeBron.
Like the second chapter house has to be, that dude never got hurt.
I mean, that guy played 20 years.
The book on Tom Brady, some of it has to be, man, he got good old lines and good defenses.
And the book on Aaron is, could you get him some playmakers?
I mean, come on, Green Bay.
That draft is a bunch of maybe at best situation.
dutch. You got him nothing. A quarterback that will never play if Aaron
remains healthy, a running back who doesn't appear to be close to as good as the two you have,
a blocking tight end and a tackle from Michigan, who I think potentially
could be good, and the Packers do develop offensive linemen very well, but he's not
helping him now, and Aaron's a month away from 37 years old with two
collarbone breaks. See, I'm fair.
Sunday, by the way, Aaron Rogers, 300 yards,
three TDs, 100-level pass-er rating.
And they got whacked.
Ain't on Aaron.
It's not on Aaron.
Aaron's doing his part.
He was great Sunday.
Not on Aaron.
Joy with the news.
No.
No.
Turn on the news.
This is the Herdline News.
Sophan Gilmore has been at the center of Patriots trade rumors ahead of today's headlines.
Or deadline.
And the team reportedly wants a lot in return for the Star Corner.
According to Deanna Rossini, the Patriots want a first round pick and a player in exchange.
That's a little rich.
How about a second round pick?
Well, he was the 2019 NFL defensive player of the year.
Okay.
He missed the week eight loss to the bills with a knee injury that he suffered during practice this week.
So getting some more clarity on that, you know, his short-term availability will probably play a role in any trade talks.
Right.
But he also had 20 total tackles, two passes defended in one interception in six games, and as a 61 overall grade from pro football focus.
Trade deadline is today.
at 4 p.m. I saw him get sizzled by D.K. Metcalf and now he's hurt. And I like him a lot.
But I'm not giving you a first and a player. Well, the other issue that I think might be at play here
is people may just be finally catching on to what Belichick is usually up to with these trades.
Like, he is a 2019 defensive player of the year. But what Belichick does is moves off of a player
a year early. If I was a really good team, I'd give you a second if he could play this year and next.
for me. Because I think I'm going to get his leadership,
his toughness, he'll make tackles.
I think he, I would give you a second.
I don't think you can in the second round
get a player that will be as influential
as he will for a year and a half.
And that's what I do. I give you a second rounder.
But I'm not giving you a first on a player.
There's no way I'm doing that. This is his lowest
grade, I think, join a long time for PFF.
That's a lot. That's a lot. That's what you give.
You know, if Sam Darnold, I think, is going to get
a second round pick. And he's a quarterback. And I think
a lot of GMs still like Donald.
A first and a pick is what you give.
for a really elite player, no injuries, elevating.
That's still elevating.
Yes, you know you're going to get a couple more years.
That's what I think it is.
We've seen Belichick do this before where we're in shock that he's moved off of a player.
And then a year later, we're like, oh.
Yeah, Dorel Revis.
It's kind of over, yeah.
So if we've picked up on it, maybe a few GMs and coaches around the league have picked up on it, too.
So Tua got his first win in his first NFL start, but his individual performance wasn't,
wasn't thrilling.
That's a good word.
It wasn't thrilling.
It wasn't thrilling.
Brian Flores is hoping to see a lot more from Tua against the Cardinals this week.
He said some good plays, some bad plays.
A lot of things we can get fixed.
First time out, some good, some bad.
Hopefully we can see some improvement next week.
So Brian Flores agrees that there's some improvement to be made from Tua.
The Dolphins go to Arizona on Sunday.
Five and two Cardinals team, there'll be a four and a half point.
underdog, according to Fox Bet.
But the Rams defense is tied for third and points allowed per game.
Cardinals defense is ninth.
So they're still going up against a very good defense.
You know, I was thinking about this.
If you were a stand-up comic and you debuted, if you just made me laugh a couple of times
in your 10-minute set, I don't expect you to be polished and refined.
Your timing will be a little off.
If I laugh twice, I'm like, he's got something.
Maybe there was a couple nice throws by Tua.
Maybe I'm being too critical.
A couple nice throws, couple good laughs.
Boom, you're off the stage.
I should go.
Good first set.
He's got some talent.
Maybe I'm too harsh.
I think we saw Borough be really good immediately with a very bad Cincinnati team.
Yeah, very bad.
And get better every week.
Yeah.
And then we saw Herbert come in after finding out five minutes before.
Yeah, real good.
I mean, he literally told us the story.
Yeah.
He just was standing there, getting ready to watch the game start.
And the coach came over and told him he's going in.
And he's looked how he's looked.
And that's them's the brakes.
Like, you're going to get.
compared to your peers. That's how this game works. And it's a competitive space. So I didn't,
I wasn't disappointed in what I saw from Tua. I think we're just comparing him to what we've
seen from the other rookie quarterbacks in his class. And that's completely fair. I expect to
see more from him this week. I expect him to let him kind of play a little bit more. He was a little
bit protected. I can't wait to watch the game. Like this whole Tua thing to me is. I cannot wait to
watch Miami, Arizona. This is a perfect game for you. You love watching Kyler Murray.
And I love watching. I really is. It'll be one of my favorite games this week.
It's still a very good defense, so it'll be very interesting.
The Cowboys are 2 and 6, somehow still in striking distance of the NFC East
and stealing it back from Philly.
Stephen Jones was asked about the team's decision not to trade Alden Smith,
and he made it clear that he thinks the Cowboys are still in the hunt for the division.
Well, I just think we're in this still fight.
We're in the NFC East.
It's obviously a division that's struggling right now.
We've just got to stay the course here.
stay the courts?
I'm going to disagree with the family, the Jones family.
I'm on the other side of the Jones family's opinion.
I'm going to have to go.
I'm going to take the other side as well.
They are two and six.
Obviously, Philly is at the top of the division now at three, four, and one.
The Washington is two and five.
Okay, but they don't have DAC.
And their offensive line now is all backups.
Like, it's like it's over.
Let's just, just honestly, when Jack went out, the season was over,
like you don't have your franchise quarterback.
This should be a situation.
You should look at every situation as an opportunity, right?
They got a break, actually.
DAC is out, so now you can, you know that the season is going to be a loss.
So start making moves for the future.
Let me ask you this.
Does anybody in Dallas, Cowboy fan, does anybody think this is a Super Bowl team?
Does anybody think this is a team capable of winning a playoff game?
The answer is clearly no.
Right.
So when Dak gets hurt, you're like, okay, that's really bad.
Let's make the most of it.
let's sell everything by Tuesday.
And so when Dak comes back,
we've got a right guard.
We've got a center now we like.
We traded a wide receiver.
We got four more picks.
Like you got to take,
you know,
the old lemon lemonade thing.
Like you got a really bad break with that.
So your fan base acknowledges.
Everybody in Dallas knows,
hey,
it's a lost year.
Hey.
Sometimes in the economy,
it's like,
ooh, COVID.
It's going to be a bad year for the economy,
right?
So you figure it out,
you just try to survive,
you bail water with Dallas,
get a bunch of draft picks.
you have an opportunity to actually rebuild in the...
And not have the fan base hold it against you.
Because that's really what it's about, right?
The rest of the league is very aware that you're not a good team.
You're not playing well.
You clearly aren't buying into what's happening this year.
And you lost DAC.
So no one is actually going to hold it against you if you reset this year.
Sometimes, to your point, that's just what it is.
It's just a reset year.
That's why I was so adamant about Tua playing this year.
Because, yes, the Dolphins are playing well,
and they're three and three and four.
Fitz is playing well, don't get caught up in the moment of this.
You need to find out what you have into it.
Now, obviously, there are two completely different situations.
However, you'll look at what the dolphins are doing and look at what the cowboys are doing.
Think macro, and the cowboys are not.
What are you worried about winning the division?
What does that mean?
It doesn't mean anything.
You're not capable of winning a playoff game if you did, and you're not nearly as good as the Giants this morning who get better every week.
And the Giants are better this morning, and the Eagles are better this morning.
And that's in the worst division in football.
So even if through some freak happenstance, you win.
win the division. What did you accomplish? Did you make the fans happy? Did you move for the future?
You don't have that. Yeah. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping
by. The Heard Lye News. By the way, I saw something this morning that made me laugh.
Carson Wentz, if you go look at the three leading receivers for the Philadelphia Eagles this morning,
I'm going to list this. Travis Fulgum, Greg Ward, and
Richard Rogers.
I'm not playing a soundtrack, a laugh track, but that's our three leading receivers.
Once again, Doug Peterson was at a press conference.
He was at a press conference yesterday, and a reporter for the second time asked
Doug Peterson if you're thinking of replacing Carson Wentz.
Sound?
It's about sitting Carson after that fourth turnover.
I'm wondering what your philosophy is when it comes to that sort of thing and what the threshold is for you.
Yeah, you know, I mean, listen, you know, Carson's our starter and, you know, got a lot of trust and faith in him that he can get the job done.
And, you know, by no means was I in a position to make a decision or make a move?
And Carson understands that he has to get better.
He's mentioned that.
He said that.
And we move forward.
I want to give you a heads up on something.
Do you know who the leading wide receiver in the NFL is since week four?
Travis Fulgum.
The Packers had him.
The Packers need receivers.
The Packers had them with Aaron Rogers.
And they're like, no, you can't play.
Carson Wentz has made Travis Fulgum since week four the leading NFL receiver.
And people in Philadelphia are like,
how can Carson Wentz not make Boston, Scott, and Greg Ward better?
Oh, you, you got to be getting me.
Philadelphia Media.
Come on.
Get it together.
All right, time to bring in my buddy.
Brought to you by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing.
Ryan Rusilla, host of the Ryan Rusillo podcast.
It's very popular.
Everybody talks about it.
All right, buddy, let's start with this.
Let's start with this.
I said, it's a day of anxiety in America.
You know in this league, like, you're from Boston, so your team always wins.
But the way it usually works in the NFL, you have these rebuild years.
But you know, if you get the coach right,
and you think you got the quarterback right,
you can at least see the horizon.
You're like, okay, we're getting close.
I watched the Giants last night,
and I'm like, that's the best loss they've had in three years.
I think they got the right coach.
Like I thought that's as good a loss as a bad football team can have, right?
Yeah, going into it,
and when you look at Tampa,
I feel like what's been lost in this Brady story,
which is a valid.
I mean, it's an unbelievable story.
He's been lighting it up until last night.
But that Tampa Bay defense was incredible.
I mean, they're the best defense of the NFL coming in.
They have all the speed all over the,
the place. It was actually a really good defense last year that was put in impossible situations
with James. So to have the Giants have it come down to the last possession, I was really
impressed. I mean, it wasn't as amazing as the first half execution as New England battling
COVID and the Chiefs a few weeks ago where I was like, I can't believe the paths are even in this
game. But you're right, like a coach. And I'm not sure if Judge is long-term to be the guy, but at least
in that prime time spotlight, hey, can you actually compete with maybe the best team in your
conference, I don't think anybody expected this thing to be close, so I was really impressed.
Yeah. By the way, you were the first to really touch on this that I know is that why most people
in Boston or from Boston were worshipping at the altar of Belichick about six years ago.
You and I had a conversation, probably over a Heineken, in which you said, they're not that
great in the draft. In fact, they're terrible drafting skill people. And my takeaway is I would
sell everything I have today.
You got some equity from the fans.
They got to be sellers today.
I don't care who the quarterback is.
They're the slowest football team in the league offensively.
Like if I said to you tomorrow,
do you think people in Boston acknowledge
Belichick can't drafts, he can't draft
offensive skill people? He just can't.
They're acknowledging it now.
It took them eight years.
But they've finally warmed up
to the idea that Bill is not.
great at drafting. He just, he just isn't. I don't know who else. Like, you know what? I made this joke the other day. I go,
if somebody else were a GM and had his draft record the last few years, his next job would be coming up on get up.
You know what I mean? He would be like the next in studio analyst because he wouldn't have a job.
Now, let me also say this. Any conversation about Belichick that starts with because of the season,
you know, I don't think he's really all that. And, you know, this guy might be a little overrated.
Like, it's just a conversation stopper, all right? He's an incredible.
incredible coach. I understand the Brady part of it, but he's been incredible. But he, I don't know if
it's, if it's the slow bleed of all of the personnel people that left. I remember when they lost
Pioli. I mean, that was years and years ago. We're talking well over a decade. And I thought, oh,
man, that's, that's a blow to this front office. And somebody who really knew was like,
yeah, not really. Like, Bill has a plan. He tells everybody to follow the plan and then go ahead
and execute. But, I mean, he's continually lost these people over and over again. He's been
awful for stretches at corner, which is weird, because that's like kind of his, his origin as a coach.
you know, he's great against you, you know, offensive linemen here or there,
but if you look back at the Pro Bowls, I'll ask you this.
You go through, you can look at this stuff.
It's all available on Google.
If you go through his last drafts going all the way back to like 2012, where are the studs?
Where are the studs?
There aren't any.
Chandler Jones, Dante High Tower, those are the last studs.
I'll give you Thune and guard.
But, I mean, that's a lot of whips.
And when you have a Hall of Fame quarterback, he can make that stuff disappear a little bit.
And it's happened at other places.
It's happening in Russell, Seattle.
It happened with Peyton Manning in Denver until Peyton then had to be careful.
by that defense. But that's why these special
quarterbacks are so special because they make up for all
your mistakes. And Belichick's made
a lot of mistakes. Yeah, hold on.
Let me write that down. You said it was called Google.
Oh, Ryan, get that.
It's all available. It's all available.
Okay, so
you look at your environment.
I'm a coach in the NFC West.
Russell Wilson never gets hurt, and he's great.
Jared Goff may not be
great, but he's always available with McVeigh.
And he takes a beat. He never got
hurting. He never hurt. Kiner Murray,
hard to get a shot at, an explosive.
I have Jimmy Garoppolo.
He's inconsistent, and he's always hurt.
Hurt in New England?
Heard again.
I honestly believe, Ryan, when I saw that story yesterday, I'm like,
people make decisions before they make him public, he's done.
Like, the long-range stuff for Garoppolo this morning, I feel like,
Kyle is like, I'm in a division with Goff, Kyler, and Russell.
I got to go get somebody.
Like, I honestly think this morning he and Lynch are like,
okay, let's keep this between us.
We're moving on.
doesn't seem like a hot take, right? No, I don't think it is. Now, I would put kind of golf and
Garoppolo in the same category, not because of the health part of it, but more because of who you
have running these offenses. I believe McVeigh and Kyle Shanhan think they can pretty much put
anybody back there and they're going to figure out how to way to run their offense. Okay,
and that's why they're so special and that's why they both became hip coaches of such a young age.
But the Garapolo fascination was body type, that hip thrusting that I kept reading about all the time.
They're like, man, nobody really throws it that way. But they front-loaded them.
that contract. They wanted credit for paying him like 40 million plus in cash in the first year.
And I go, this guy started like seven games. And in those games where they went undefeated with
San Francisco, he actually wasn't that great. So for me, this is just a longer continuation of
somebody who physically looks the part, but doesn't always make great decisions. The numbers aren't
that great. The defensive roster last year, that was the best defense in the NFL. He threw
eight passes in the NFC title game. And you can tell by the play Colin, Colin, when I look at
quarterbacks. I'll go, okay, third and eight, do they trust this guy? And it's clear he, among another
handful of quarterbacks in the league, like, I don't even know if the play callers even trust him
as much as they should. So they front-loaded that deal so much. If they want to move on from him,
they can. But he has to be healthier first to have any kind of market if he's going to another team.
Okay, so Tua. I don't have the size. People say size doesn't matter for quarterbacks.
Yes, it does. It does matter. I'm sorry. It does. Most of the great quarterbacks are big. If they're
not they have a wiggle. They can move. Fran Tarkington, Vic, you know, Russell Wilson, they can move.
Fran had small wrists, though. Oh, he did. Oh, thanks for that. I appreciate that.
He was a scout. Ryan was scouting back then for the Vikings back in the 40s.
But there's... But there is one exception to all this, breeze. So you're basically telling me,
for two to work, he's got to be one guy in league history. And I'm like, that's trying to land a
747 on a quarter. In the history of the league, the only guy,
without size, a big arm who doesn't wiggle a lot, is Breeze. And I watch Tua, and I'm like,
where's the it? Like, right? Like, what's the... No, no. Do we disagree on this one?
Wait, you're off, Tua? I'm off. When did this happen? Last week. I was, oh, it was the last
week? So you waited before he played to write on. Then you're like, okay. Yeah. Look, he wasn't great.
They didn't need him. The Rams made monumental turnovers in that game. And that's kind of why that
game was decided that way. But I am not off of Tua. I understand what you're saying,
smaller guys. It is kind of funny. Like, hey, Russell's a little smaller, Breeze is a little
smaller. Kyler's a little small. So what do we now? I want small quarterbacks. I mean,
that seems kind of ridiculous. I don't think anybody's going to say, hey, let's get smaller guys in here.
Is Kellyn Moore still got some bullets in there? So I love to decision making. I love the way
he read the field. I love the way he manipulated safeties. I love his athleticism. All of those things I
saw for real in person in Alabama. And I'm not going to write him off just because he's
Tanted and small here at this point. So I'm
resist your position on that one.
He's a resistor.
All right, Rosillo. It's great seeing you, buddy.
Podcast at the ringer of the Ryan Rosillo
podcast. Thanks for coming on the show.
All right. Thanks, Colin.
All right. Coming up next, I'm going to drive you nuts again.
I'm going to drive you absolutely nuts.
I'm going to drive you crazy, especially if you're under 40.
I'm just going to drive you crazy next.
But I'm right.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at It podcast.
I'm Sam Jett.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived
it.
Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

So it doesn't matter how many times I'm right on this next topic.
I could go 100 for 100 and you'll still argue with me.
Currently, I'm four for four.
I warned you four times on this.
I've been right every time.
It's like arguing with a certain president.
It doesn't matter.
I give up, so I'm not going to argue.
But I'm going to be right again.
I'm going to be five for five.
Quarterback is not a position to be cool.
Now, it's cool when you win.
Peyton Manning's funny.
Brett Farve was cool without trying.
Patrick Mahomes is cool without trying.
But if you're trying to be cool,
or you're a little too silly,
or you're a showboater,
not going to work.
Not my kind of guy.
Russell Wilson's not cool.
Tom Brady not cool.
Bree's not cool.
Andrew Luck wasn't cool.
Carson Wednesday didn't cool.
Again, don't tell me Patrick Mahomes is cool.
He's cool because he's winning.
He's not trying to be cool.
And there's a big difference.
You could ask Joy.
There's guys that are cool and guys that try to act cool.
If you're cool, Steve McQueen was cool, didn't try.
Eastwood 25, 30 years ago was cool, didn't try.
Denzel's cool.
He ain't trying.
Michael Jordan, the actor, is cool.
They're not trying.
Mahomes also didn't try to be cool before he got onto the field and was winning.
That wasn't the book on him.
We have a new cool guy.
I was right on Mansell.
I was right on Baker.
I was right on Cam.
I was right on James Winston.
Too silly, showboat, too cool.
I was right.
It's four for four.
Bring your argument on.
Here's number five.
I'm not into Drew Locke.
All the cool dancing.
Win more games, Cub Scout.
Win more games.
If I have to see another one,
one of these. I've seen about four times he's done that. Win games. Kate, you're at a franchise
with John Elway. John Elway's shadow is better than you. There's one quarterback in the NFL that
tries to act cool and it works, Aaron Rogers. And when you're that gifted, I guess you get to be.
When you're as good as Aaron Rogers, you can be a little bit of a showboat and you can do the
Superman stuff or whatever you want to do in the belt and all that stuff. It's Aaron Rogers. That's not
Aaron Rogers. Told you before. I'm right on this. That's people always don't get the
backwards hat thing. They think it's about the hat. It's metaphorical. You look like a goofball.
You look like a goofball. You got to be mature enough to be a franchise quarterback for a
$5 billion franchise turn it around. It's not about the hat. It's about you don't get that
adults look at you, billionaires who own the team, executives who run the team and go,
Come on, bro.
I'm not saying you can't ever wear a hat backwards.
In fact, I'm four hat backwards all the time except my quarterback on those big press conferences.
Hate the dancing.
Trying to be cool.
Trying to be.
Not into it with James.
He said he's too silly.
Not into it with Johnny Mansell.
You all defended Johnny Mansell.
All of you.
I was on an island.
I was the only sportscaster in America that said you cannot draft him.
I was the only sportscaster in America.
ESPN, it was fan boys with Baker Mayfield.
He said he's trying too hard.
Guys that are cool don't have to try to be cool.
We all went to a frat.
We all went to college.
We all went to a high school with a guy that was just cool.
He didn't talk a lot, didn't advertise it.
Patrick Mahomes is cool.
Never trying to be cool.
He's just cool.
I ran into Patrick Mahomes like twice in person.
He's just a cool dude.
He's kind of goofy, to be honest with it.
He's kind of silly, fun.
He's young.
He's never trying to be cool.
Don't like it.
Out on Drew Locke.
Go ahead, argue.
You're old for four.
And you were in on Drewlock very much before the season.
Now I'm starting to see this stuff.
I'm like, out, done, not interested.
Quarterback's not a cool position.
I want you to be presidential or quarterback yield.
I want you to be an adult.
I want you to be fairly neutral.
I want you to be right in the middle.
Oh, bad interception.
Okay, you throw them.
You can't throw another one because of that one.
We scored a touchdown.
Pump your fist.
Boom.
Go back to the bench.
You can't be highly emoted.
My receivers can, my backs can.
My middle linebackers can.
My tight end can.
My corner can.
my safety. I want you pumping and yeah and playing with emotion and a little loose and this far from
out of control. Quarterback, I want you totally in control. I don't want you this close to marginally
out of control. I want you to be neutral all the time. Don't get too high. Don't get too low. Don't want all
this dancing stuff. Go ahead, argue with me. If you were a stock, I'd be selling, I'd be buying
something else. You're wrong every time on this. Every time you're wrong on this. But that's okay.
I'm not going to be judgmental. Just I'm out. Well, it's a leadership position. You don't want a leader that
rides super highs and super low.
And it's trying to be cool.
And it wants fans and like you just lead.
You when behind closed doors you can be as emotional as you want to.
I don't know what you do at your house.
Right.
But in television.
Okay.
So I'm out.
So listen, I took a side on this.
I'm out under law.
I don't, I think it's fun.
But I also kind of operate under the idea that everybody is not going to be Patrick Mahomes and
Russell Wilson.
Well, they should be.
That's the goal.
Is that the goal?
It is the goal, but everybody doesn't have the same goals.
Some people just want to play football and enjoy themselves.
Oh, great.
I'm a Bronco fan.
Our guy just wants to play and have fun and make cookies.
I'm not a Bronco fan.
I don't think this is Tua at all.
I think two is.
Good, because the guy in Kansas City doesn't want to just play and have fun.
He wants to win Super Bowls.
No, but to your point, Mahomes has a natural coolness to him.
He doesn't have to try to be cool either.
And in a lot of ways, I don't think Aaron Rogers says either.
I think it's just his personality.
But when you win a Super Bowl and you're Aaron Rogers.
You get a little bit.
You get a pass.
That's like anything else in life.
If you are successful, you get things that other people don't.
That's how it works.
How about, yeah, how about new rule?
Win a Super Bowl for you to that nonsense.
I don't think that's a bad rule.
I mean, seriously.
I don't think it's a bad rule.
I'm sure Broncos fans with level Super Bowl right now.
I didn't do any of this dancing stuff until I got to syndicate it.
The local level, head down, no dancing.
Dance for a couple minutes when I got syndicated.
It's the way it goes.
Okay.
It's NFL trading deadline.
Albert Brewer is going to stop on Jay Glazer today.
There's going to be deals made here in the next five, six out.
We're going to have deals made, and we're going to tell you what's happening.
