Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast. For 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:35 A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
Starting point is 00:01:58 So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Hurd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Sports Radio. Time to change up your wireless provider. Pure Talk gives you unlimited talk, text, and two gigs of data at $20 a month. Dial pound 250 and say my name, Colin Coward. Dial pound 250 and say Colin Coward.
Starting point is 00:02:43 That'll get you 50% off the first month. Mark Dominic, over 20 years in the NFL, scouting as a general manager, former Bucks general manager, a director of pro personnel. It's the draft deadline or trading deadline day. and you see the Jets are already starting to move some pieces. Let's bring Mark Dominic in from Nashville, Tennessee. You were part of that scouting department when the Bucks won their Super Bowl, so you've put teams together and disassembled them.
Starting point is 00:03:14 So I said this morning, I believe the Jets are just going to get Trevor Lawrence. I think he's too good of a prospect. I think it gives the general manager Joe Douglas another three years to build the team, less pressure, we got a star. And my takeaway, if they do that, and I'm pretty sure they will, I do think Sam Darnold is kind of what you're looking for in 2020 in terms he can move the pocket. He's a big physical presence. He can throw the ball.
Starting point is 00:03:38 He makes too many mistakes, but I think he'll get a second chance. What would Sam Darnold fetch on the market, in your opinion? Yeah, I think if you had a chance to trade for Sam Darnold knowing that you got the signing bonus out of the way, you still got a couple of years to see him play quarterback. You know, I think you could easily get a two and more. I mean, if Josh Rosen went for a two, Sam Darnold still has so much more in front of him and what Josh Rosen had, because you know what Sam Darnold play with in terms of around him. There's really been nobody that's really talented to be able to stand up and say,
Starting point is 00:04:07 look at all these weapons he gets to work with. Look at this great offensive line. I mean, Bexton, when he's in there's been good, but he hasn't even been in there. So I think it's easily a two. I think you can also pull maybe a following year's one, but it should be two-toos at a minimum for Sam Darnold if the Jets go that direction. Would you as a general manager have rolled the dice on Antonio Brown? It's not a position of need for Tampa, but he is a unique talent.
Starting point is 00:04:33 What do you make of that Buccaneers move? You know, I think it almost has been a position of need for Tampa Bay. I mean, the frustrating thing for this team is good as they are. They have not been able to get Mike Evans and Chris Godwin healthy at the same time basically all season long, and that's really a big recipe of what they want to be. So I think if you sat with it, met with Antonio Brown, and you felt from a medical or a calm standpoint that he's in a good spot, and then as Bruce Arrian said, he's in much better shape than expected,
Starting point is 00:05:01 then knowing that Tom Brady has spent that week with him, that time with him gives me the confidence to sit there and say, okay, look, we're all in this year anyway, right? Tampa Bay, Leonard Fortinette, Gronkowski, all this. So why not take one more step into it? Because you're in complete control of the contract. And when you're in that kind of control, if something goes sideways, you let him go. So I understand the decision for Jason Light and Bruce Ariens to say, let's add one more piece, and maybe we don't have to run the ball anymore in Tampa.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Yeah. So I look at Green Bay, and I think they need a number two receiver, and I think they could use linebacker help. It's not a great free aid. This is one of the reasons I didn't love their draft, is that I think Aaron needs help now. In one month, he's 37. Sometimes in Green Bay, not all the free agents want to go there. I kind of think, Mark, okay, my quarterback's 37. Seattle's adding people. We got a physicality issue. on defense, you can run on this. Have you ever gone into a trading deadline and thought, I'm going to overpay here a little? Like my quarterback's older, we just have a huge weakness. How many more good years do I get? I mean, is everything about value? Or have you in your life thought, okay, I got a 37-year-old quarterback. I got to overspend here on free agency.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Well, Colin, I've ran into this issue back in 2013. I didn't like the draft class. And we came in the year before 32nd the NFL past defense. and we're like 42 yards away from the worst past defense in the history of the NFL. So I had to make a decision on trading for Dorel Rivas at 27 years old and saying, can he help the problem and the solution? So I've been there where maybe I overpaid a little bit looking back now. I mean, Derell still went on, won Super Bowls, went to Pro Bowls, all pros, but not for Tampa.
Starting point is 00:06:43 And so that's the disappointing thing when you see these kind of situation. So when you're looking at Green Bay, I agree with you. I think you're right on the cusp. You do realize that you're one of the three or four teams. and yes, if you did not decide to go in the drafts, which is clearly a very rich and deep draft class of wide receivers, this is your chance. And there's a lot of talk about Will Fuller
Starting point is 00:07:01 and whether he could possibly be a late-minute addition to this Packers team. We will see if that happens, but there is discussions from what I've been told and been talking about. Yeah. So, you know, Eli Manning, by today's standards, would not have made it in the NFL. He made too many mistakes by year two you'd be done.
Starting point is 00:07:21 But we don't, you know, Drew Brees doesn't probably get a second chance. But I look at Kyler Murray and they moved off Rosen and it was the right call. And Dwayne Haskins, Washington has said it doesn't work for us. And I look at Tua and I saw a story this weekend where, and we talked about this on the show for weeks, I think I got to see him for eight game, live bullets. Let's see if you can play. Because I'm going to have Houston's number one pick and that may be a top five pick. And it sounds ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:07:51 But the world's changed. Mark, how many starts would you give a quarterback? And you don't see the secret sauce, you move off. Like, is it ridiculous to say nine starts to a show me something? Is that ridiculous to say? You know what I think also, though, the part that I think a lot of fans aren't thinking about is what's the player like when no one's watching? What's he like in the meeting rooms?
Starting point is 00:08:16 What's his body language? How's his leadership skills? Do people rally around them? I mean, I think that's what Josh Rosen failed at, where the people didn't really appreciate where he was coming from. Even though he was super smart, he wasn't grasping what you wanted to grasp. And so although you sit there and say, boy, he needs more opportunity, he kind of talked to you.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Same thing you're talking about Dwayne Haskins. Like there's obviously a group of people within the Redskins, Washington's organization that say, you know, he's not the quarterback of the future. So for Tua, he does need to play all year. He does need to go out there. But certainly his expectations and what he needs to deliver needs to grow as quick as possible. because of the way that other quarterbacks are playing automatically, they go in the National Football League.
Starting point is 00:08:55 So there's a lot of pressure here, but I don't think nine games is enough if you're in love with the character of the guy. And I get the sense that Miami does love the character of the guy, and that's why they went in and put them in, even when they were three and three. Yeah, that's a great point. If you like him in the meeting rooms and you like him at practice and he ingratiates himself with teammates, that gives you more time.
Starting point is 00:09:15 That gives you more legs. So Patriots, according to reports, won a first round pick and a player for Stefan Gilmore. That seems awfully rich to me. Did you ever have to negotiate with Belichick? Was he difficult, easy? Did you ever have to deal with Bill? I traded with Bill.
Starting point is 00:09:31 I traded Alex Smith, a young tight end for a fifth round pick. And I won that trade. And Alex went on to play, but Alex got cut before he went to training camp. So I got a fifth round pick. But I also traded with Bill and Akeep to Leave. And didn't love doing that trade, but we had run into too many issues with Akeep to Leave. So I've traded with Bill, I think, four times in my first.
Starting point is 00:09:49 my NFL career is only a five years as a general manager. So we had a lot of dialogue. And it's pretty blunt. It's pretty like fast in terms of like, what are you thinking? And I'm like, oh, you know, it's really just like a quick casual conversation. He's the same way on the phone as he is on the media. But you just state what you think you believe in. And he'll be like, hey, look, I think that's a little rich.
Starting point is 00:10:07 I'll call you back. Or I think we could get something done here. Let's go ahead and turn into the paperwork. I mean, it's really fast. It's not like, hey, let's have a nice long conversation. Or GM to GM where you kind of do the small talk. it's all business for Bill. And so I've been on both sides.
Starting point is 00:10:20 I've won some trades and lost some trades with Bill Belichick. Yeah. Well, it's interesting today. You know, I say this to Joy all the time. I try not to get paralyzed with being wrong. If I get information, I'll tell you what I think. And sometimes I whiff as a general manager on days like today, psychologically, you don't want to get burned. But, I mean, what was your mind going into trade day?
Starting point is 00:10:43 Like, how did you view it? Well, to me, Colin, your pro-personnel. assistants and directors. This is what Bruce Allen had me do when I was director of player personnel, pro personnel, same with Rich McKay, is I already needed to put the map in front of the general manager before I got there, meaning I had better have already called all 31 other clubs and said, what do you have available, anybody at all? And you know, you get those, everybody's on the roster is available for the certain price. And so I would even give that to Bruce Allen, say, look, they gave me the everything. So then he'd pick up the phone and say, have the heart to heart
Starting point is 00:11:13 with the GM when you can talk a little bit more candidly. So for me, it was setting the table, as the general manager of the Bucks, calling everybody and just finding out exactly what is available on their football team. And when it becomes GM to GM, you have a lot more honesty and truth coming out so you know exactly what is. So you're not surprised and you can already game plan for what you want to do. Yeah. So with all your Tampa connections, you're surprised they're this good this quickly? No. You know, I think, you know, when you get to add somebody like Tom Brady and people who are talking about, well, the arm strength, they've been saying that for Tom, about Tom for five years.
Starting point is 00:11:51 They needed stability, especially at that position. We haven't had that really since Brad Johnson. And Brad was only there for a little bit. And so that's been one thing with Tampa Bay is they needed somebody that was going to be taking the team and showing them everything they need to do and doing it consistently. I mean, look at Tom during the off season. When there was the beginning of COVID, he's still like out in the park throwing ball saying, let's go, let's be a good football team.
Starting point is 00:12:13 And so I think it's come off to that point where now because of that and because of the skills around him, the offensive line, the skill players, and then what they've been able to do with Todd Bowles and his, you know, development of that defense getting the most out of like a Shaq Barrett. I'm not surprised. I think this is what they expected. I mean, if I would assign Tom Brady, I'd be expected to be six and two because for 20 years he did it in New England. Why can't he do it here? By the way, when you broke into the league, there weren't nearly as many trades by the time you left it. Right. Like it's, what do you account for that? Yeah, I think really in 2010, I think there was a group of younger general managers that got more aggressive.
Starting point is 00:12:50 I was part of that. Howie Roseman was part of that. John Schneider was part of that. And I think that really kind of changed everybody. Thomas Dimitroff was part of that group that said, look, we don't have to do it the old sale way. You can steal guys from people's practice squads. Let's be aggressive about claiming guys off a waiver wires. And let's start trading more. And so I think it was that group, us group of four or five GMs. said, like, let's start thinking differently. And I think the reason why you see so much more is two things. Number one, again, continued youth at the general manager position. And two, the cap has tremendously grown.
Starting point is 00:13:20 And because the cap has grown, it's been a lot easier to cut players and say, I can eat that dead space and still make room for this player, where I can eat that dead space and move this player on. I think that has been a tremendous increase in why you see so many trades. Good stuff. Mark Dominic, 20 years in the NFL building teams, former GM. Good seeing you, man. Great to see you, Colin. Have a good one.
Starting point is 00:13:38 All right, good guy. I told you, if I didn't do this for a living, my goal in life was to be an NFL general manager. It's the only thing. I thought about being a screenwriter. You know, that'd be fun. But I don't want to write 700 scripts and nobody ever say, I want to make that movie. Whereas I can make a bunch of trades screw up and still, no owner forces you to be perfect on trades.
Starting point is 00:14:00 Yeah, I mean, eventually you're going to hit on somebody. We were talking the other day with what type of team if we were an owner of a professional team. I'm not a meddling boss. I'd be a good, I'd be the kind of, I've been in a war room, I'd be a GM, I'd have good people, and I would be, I would be a listener, and I would, I would not be, but I'm also a yeller if things go sideways. So about once a year, Goulet knows, I got to bark at you, and if I have to fire you, I will, I don't want to, but I tend to give you a lot of space.
Starting point is 00:14:28 I get people a lot of space. No, I don't think you're, you're not very hovering. No, I'm not a hover at all, not at all. I tell my kids, I'd rather you make mistakes now when I'm around you than 35 when I'm not around you. I'm not so resistant to owners that are hovering because it is a billion dollar business. So if you want to know what's going on, that's fine. I think it's more, there's two issues. One, when you try to make decisions, you're absolutely not qualified to make, that you're paying people a lot of money to research and do. And when you want the credit for
Starting point is 00:14:57 everything. You don't really need to get the credit. Those kind of people are the worst. Like when you win, you're going to get the credit. Win the big one. You'll get all the credit you can handle. Yeah. I don't like those people. Got to take it. take credit for everything. I know somebody like that currently. I think we all do. He's got a big position. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it
Starting point is 00:15:20 grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle

And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite.

Starting point is 00:16:49 Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:16:59 I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:17:16 I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so... Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:35 For me, it's one of the most important years. for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:17:51 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
Starting point is 00:18:10 and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch life becomes about wins and losses Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person.
Starting point is 00:18:32 Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news.
Starting point is 00:18:51 This is the herd line news. No blame all credit. Those people are no fun. You know, I think I've just had it with the NFCEs. Why would happen? I mean, it's just, you know, the thing about the NFCEs is they have these tremendous, like cornerstone giant brand teams
Starting point is 00:19:09 in their division so even when they're awful like historically awful we still have to pay attention to them so Washington is still hanging in there in the NFC East after two and five start Ron Rivera is encouraged by the improvements he's seen in his team
Starting point is 00:19:25 and is expecting to turn things around soon I think players have aha moments all of a sudden I get what the coach is trying to say I see what they're trying to show us okay that makes You know, again, part of it is we didn't have OTAs, we didn't have many camps, we didn't have a normal training camp for these guys to look at sea and adapt and get used to things. So what's happening now is also we're having these aha moments and hopefully they continue where it makes sense. So the Eagles are atop.
Starting point is 00:19:53 The NFC East right now, three, four, and one. Washington is second place, two and five. The Cowboys are two and six and the Giants are one and seven. Can anybody tell me who the quarterback is today? Well, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the. Washington? Washington's Kyle Allen. The Cowboys will be Ben Danucci because reportedly Andy Dalton will
Starting point is 00:20:11 miss this week's game against the Steelers. He is on the COVID-19 reserve list. So he is self-quarantining and they are doing contact tracing right now. So that's what's going on with the Cowboys. It's Kyle Allen. Here's an aha for you. Aha, we have Kyle Allen. We're not going to win
Starting point is 00:20:27 the division. Here's the rest of the schedule for Washington. Giants, then they're at the Lions. Bengals. Let me see this. Hold on. They could beat the Giants. Giants are off a very good performance. Lions, they could win their. Bengals, they're not going to win that game. Cowboys, they'll win.
Starting point is 00:20:41 They're not winning Steelers. They're not winning Seahawks. I don't think they're beating the Panthers. They're not beating the Eagles. Yeah, aha. Aha, nice seeing you. I just figured something out. You're not making the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Well, the only thing about Washington is discouraging for me because I do think they're building for the future. They have a good defense. I like Ron Rivera. I think they have a lot of things in place, but they don't have their quarterback in place. It's kind of big. And that's, yeah, that's important.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Kyle Allen is not their future, which is why I don't. understand the move to move off of Dwayne Haskins other than if you're trying to win this division. Like that's weird. Like something with Dwayne Haskins in the building wasn't good. Right. There's something.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Again, I don't have all the answer. We don't. Something in the building didn't work. They moved off him. I mean, it would be one thing where you see Josh Rosen and you're like, oh my God, we're going to get Kyler Murray. Right. You don't have anybody.
Starting point is 00:21:28 You're probably too good to get the first two quarterbacks. So something in that building that I'm not seeing with Wayne Haskins is happening because they just decided one week, we're done. It was very dramatic, and then there's talk about possibly trading him. So there's something going on that's not, D.C. media knows and is not saying or they don't know yet. Yeah. Carson Wentz turned the ball over four times and the Eagles ugly win over the Cowboys Sunday night. Still won.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Once again, Doug Peterson had to defend Wenzhenst and being asked if he ever considered benching him during the game. Oh, my God. Yeah, you know, I mean, listen, you know, Carson's our starter and, and, you know, got a lot of trust and faith in him that he can get the job done. And, you know, by no means was I in a position to make a decision or make a move. I was going to give Carson every opportunity to win that game for us. And he's capable of doing that. And I wasn't in that frame of mind. Unlike Washington and the Cowboys, and at least for this year, obviously, Docs their quarterback when he's healthy, Carson Wentz is the quarterback for Eagles.
Starting point is 00:22:33 Well, they've also paid him. They're not going to bait. They're like, He's got two more years after this. They paid him. And I understand there's a little bit of excitement about Jalen Hertz. But what are you talking about? Like, what is the value of? That's not happening. It's not happening.
Starting point is 00:22:49 Ask you this. Here's the relationship with Carson Wentz. And you just have to come to terms with it. Have you ever been in a relationship? When it's good, it is crazy, fun. Yeah. And there's some really bad nights. But the good, and you know it's.
Starting point is 00:23:05 not going to last 10 years, but there's a certain point in your life. It's like, this is fun and really fun, but he's going to drive me crazy, and I'm going to move off of this. But you know what? I'm connected to him now. I've got a family thing, or in this case, we've got a money thing, and the good's really good, and he's certainly worth time. But I do think there are people in Philadelphia are like, listen, we're tied for two or three years. Some of this is nonsense and drives me nuts, and there may be issues he can't correct. But boy, when he is good, with a bunch of deck chairs, he is really good.
Starting point is 00:23:39 You're mostly describing a toxic relationship. Yes. But so the good, the difference between a toxic relationship is the bad either outweighs the good or they're basically equal. What would make that situation worth it is if the bad's really bad,
Starting point is 00:23:53 but there's overwhelmingly more good. So you feel like maybe you could fix the bad if you put better pieces around, more support, you know, or you just developed, you know, the relationship a little bit more. That's how I feel about. The bad is really bad, but there's enough good that if you get things together, they've had a ton of injuries, there are some things he needs to work through, you can't have the most turnovers in the league. That's not good. That's a mark on Carson Wentz, despite how many injuries they've had.
Starting point is 00:24:18 In his last 12, he's 7, 4 and 1. If he was 4-7 and 1, you'd try end it. But he is winning, sometimes late, single-handedly, enough games to deal with the toxicity. Yes. So the Patriots are in an unfamiliar place sitting at 2 and 5 for the first time since 2000. And Bill Belichick recently noted that Salis All the cap limitations were forcing New England to play more young players, but he insists that's not an excuse for how the team has performed so far this season. I mean, look, we paid Cam Newton a million dollars. I mean, it's obviously we didn't have any money, you know. Nobody's fault. I mean, that's what we did the last five years. We sold out and won three Super Bowls played in a fourth and played in an AFC championship game. This year we had less to work with.
Starting point is 00:24:58 It's not an excuse. It's just a fact. I mean, there's a lot right about that, but there's also a lot that he doesn't want to acknowledge, which is you have the slowest offense in the league by a lot. They have no dynamic offensive players. I don't know if I, there's very few times where I like feel like he doesn't say the right thing or just like close the door on something. But whether that's true or not, it kind of sounds a little bit like an excuse.
Starting point is 00:25:26 A little bit, yeah. I know he said it was an excuse. It'd be different. If they were losing shootouts right now and you're like, okay, they just, you know, Cam's not working, but God, get them the. right quarterback. This is not a cam issue. This is a we don't have a one or a two receiver. We don't have a viable tight end. And Gilmore's our best player and we're probably moving it. Like again, you can lose. The Giants lost and I can go, oh, I see. This is not a quarterback
Starting point is 00:25:53 away. It's not Justin Fields away. They need players bad. Like four dynamic offensive players. Well, I mean, that's kind of what he's saying. Like they didn't have any money because they sold out to win these championships, so now they're in salary cap hell. But I mean, are your younger players getting better? I'd like to see him, one. James White. Because that's what should be happening
Starting point is 00:26:16 if you don't have money to pay any free agents, right? It should be developing. It should look like the Giants. You should look like Miami last year. Like, you should still be growing. I don't see that. To me, it just comes back to what was going on at the beginning of the season, where we were trying to be pitched on the fact that this is still the same New England team that's going to
Starting point is 00:26:32 compete every single year the same way. And Jared's them is the future. Yeah. No. They've got real problems. Enjoy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 00:26:43 The Herd Line News. All right. He's the best. Jay Glazer coming up next. The very latest, he'll have his phone. Things Happening. Trading Deadline. Jay Glazer joining us live next.
Starting point is 00:26:51 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unethed. Enleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast, Superhuman, documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. Yep, that's me.

Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam J.
Starting point is 00:28:43 And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we picket here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you're just so you're not. But just so y'all know.
Starting point is 00:29:03 I mean, at this point, this is the second episode where we've discussed correct. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:18 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host. and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience
Starting point is 00:29:38 in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize
Starting point is 00:29:51 that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you're here on Earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:30:10 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. Learn the Hardway. Starting point is 00:30:34 Jay Glazer, nobody better, especially in these moments, trading deadline is joining us live. He's going to be Sunday, Fox NFL Sunday. He's going to be down in San Diego at the Marine Air Corps Station in Miramar in beautiful San Diego. He's joining us now live on the trading deadline day, 4 p.m. Eastern. These are crazy days. And it seems like they're getting crazier, by the way. All these young GMs make deals 15 years ago. You guys didn't make deals.
Starting point is 00:30:57 So I'm going to throw a team out at you. You're Green Bay. You could use a second receiver. It's not a big free agent organization. I think they could use Blake Martinez. They miss that linebacker. Your gut feeling on, they've got a GM now that's a little bit more of a dice roller than the previous guy. Any thoughts on Green Bay?
Starting point is 00:31:14 You know, Green Bay, we know that they talk to the Texans about Will Fuller. But more than anything, they've got to bolster that defense. You just talked about Blake Martinez. And I don't, look, I don't understand the reasoning of what they do, a lot of over there now for them to move up for Jordan Love. And clearly that's the last thing you needed when you were one game away from the Super Bowl. Didn't get it. Didn't get them a lot of what they did in their draft or their offseason.
Starting point is 00:31:41 And, you know, it's clear, especially in that San Francisco game a year ago, they needed help on that run defense. And they didn't do anything there to help them. They needed help with an extra receiver. They certainly didn't do that in the draft also, you know, taking a receiver high up. So I don't really understand the rhyme or rationale that goes out a lot in Greveck. Okay, I want to throw this out. Stefan Gilmore, Patriots say they want a first round pick and a player. That seems awfully rich to me, but I do think Gilmore can play, Jay.
Starting point is 00:32:10 What's a reasonable market in your opinion? Oh, my God, can't you? Listen, this year is different than any other year. If you have a guy like Gilmore out there, look what just a couple years ago, the Rams gave up for Ramsey. Yeah. Right? Gilmore's the best cornerback in the NFL, right?
Starting point is 00:32:25 it's him or Ramsey, but he's there. But this is such a different year. And I said on Sunday, there's no instant gratification this year because if you trade for a player, he can't play for you that first game because of COVID rules. He has to test for six days before he can even join you. So even if you get him in there on time after you trade today, it's not going to play this weekend.
Starting point is 00:32:47 Probably be limited the week after that. So you don't have that instant gratification. Plus, we also know the cap goes down next year considerably. because of COVID. So as a result of this, you're not going to have teams are not calling around, trying to wheel and deal. You're not going to try and dump out of high price. Are they going to try and dump out of some high price players?
Starting point is 00:33:05 But nobody's going to be taking those high price players, those big contracts, because of what the cap's going to be next year. That's why this whole trade deadline this year has been pretty uneventful for the most part. Do you think there will be a big seller or a big trader? Is there a team or two? I should, you know, your phone's buzzing a little. Yeah. it's more of teams trying to sell players,
Starting point is 00:33:30 trying to get out of these players, trying to get out of these contracts. Even like, look, I was shocked when I called this weekend, I was shocked at how many people said, yeah, we can't afford Gilmore. And I'm like, it's the best cornerback in the NFL. Usually teams are clamored. Now we don't, we're not able to.
Starting point is 00:33:44 We're not able to deal with the cap. You can't deal with it. And, you know, cap's going to go down next year. We don't know what we're dealing with. So it's that uncertainty of next year that has taken out a lot of the bidders that you normally have. Again, a guy like Gilmore, and by the way, it was funny because he
Starting point is 00:34:00 put his house on the market and I actually got the listing. And in the listing, it says all offers must be in by Tuesday 5 o'clock. I'm serious. I'm not pulling a glazerism. I'm not messing with you here. It really, he said that. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:34:17 does he know something we didn't know before that? And, you know, he had a knee injury in this weekend and didn't play. But it's pretty funny that he insisted one hour after the trade deadline, all offers must be it. So I do believe the Jets will draft Trevor Lawrence. He's a generational talent. We've been talking about him
Starting point is 00:34:32 for three years. If they do, I think there's going to be a market for Sam Darnold. Colts? I do. What is your gut feeling on the market for Sam? I do also. I think there'll be a market for Sam. I think Sam has shown really great athleticism this year.
Starting point is 00:34:48 He has nothing to work with over there. I think that there will be teams who look at Sam. I don't think they're going to get an awful lot for him. I really don't. But I certainly think that teams will, it depends. You have an offensive coach. A lot of these coaches like to look at it and say with their ego, oh, I could turn them into a star. I could turn them into a problem. Yeah. So you'll have those teams looking for them. By the way, is there a team out there like the Dolphins or the Raiders? They may not be a Super Bowl team, but boy, Flores and Gruden could talk themselves into, you know what? We're close. We beat Kansas City. Anything on the Raiders or the
Starting point is 00:35:24 dolphins because I think they have a chance to make the playoffs and I wonder if in the rooms they're talking a little. Defensively, both have done a great job. They really have. And Flores, the reason why they made the move to Tua is because they realize, hey, we're actually in the middle of this day. So, you know, we know what Fitz's ceiling is. We're not really sure what Tua's ceiling is.
Starting point is 00:35:45 He may be able to have more of a dynamic presence here for us and help us more down the stretch, get us over that hump so we can win this division. So I think that's why they, and remember, too, originally they wouldn't have been able to do it at this point and let him work out some of the kinks and the cobwebs because originally their biweek was week 11 but because of everything that getting changed up with the schedule they moved all the way up this past week.
Starting point is 00:36:10 Okay. I love what they're doing over there. They have bought in. You name one player in that defense of Miami. Unless you're a diehard fan, I don't think anybody can. And that is the one defense, well, besides Pittsburgh, I would not want to face on a Sunday. Yeah, Byron Jones, I guess, the corner from Dallas.
Starting point is 00:36:29 Okay, hey, by the way, you're down in San Diego at the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, San Diego. Tell us what you're doing there, and that means a lot to you, I know. Yeah, it really does. Look, it means a lot to Fox. And it's great. I've been at Fox since 2004. And almost every year, they have sent me or the whole crew to a military base on Veterans Day and or on Thanksgiving. So the military really means a lot to Fox.
Starting point is 00:36:55 And then when I started my foundation, MVP, Fox has been so supportive. It's great. So every year, you know, they call and they're like, hey, we're going to just, it's not even do you want to go. They send me to a different base. And I'm able to really, I'm in my element. I love these people. They are, they do, like, again, our military, they don't know you or me or my kid.
Starting point is 00:37:13 And yet they leave their own families to go fight for us. And on Veterans Day itself, particularly it's special. And I want every veteran out there to think going in. from right now until next Veterans Day. What are you proud of of your time in the military? We all look at you. We're celebrating you next week. So what are you going to celebrate about yourself?
Starting point is 00:37:34 Because we need to have some pride in what we do for this country. Because, man, when we say thank you for your service, you damn sure know that we mean thank you for your service. Yeah. Well said. Fox is amazing with the American military. Yeah, they are. We're really amazing.
Starting point is 00:37:47 All right, Glazer. Don't drink, don't drink that wine behind you. Get in shape. Why don't you go lift weights for one time in your life? For once, I know, for once. All right, good see you. I got to keep people like you from bullying me. I know, I'm a tough guy.
Starting point is 00:37:59 You're talking about Mr. Tough guy here. I got facial hair and everything. All right. Good stuff. Thanks, Jay. See, brother. Yeah, this is interesting, this trading deadline thing. You know, the COVID thing's real.
Starting point is 00:38:11 So you get a player. You can't play him. So, boy, Stefan Gilmore, would I trade a one? I'm not giving you one in a player. One of the players a lot. I guess it depends. If I was Tennessee, now Tennessee just picked up a corner,
Starting point is 00:38:27 but, you know, I'm trying to think of a team. Like if I was the, okay, Raiders. Okay, I got a bunch of young players that work. I don't trust Belichick. I'm not giving one and a player to Bill Belichick. Look at what he does. He pleases people every time.
Starting point is 00:38:42 What about the, if you gave the Raiders, an elite corner right now. I'm not saying Stefan Gilmore's wash or anything like that. I'm just saying Bill Belichick is always up to something. and one in a player is a lot. That's like a quarterback. But what about a one?
Starting point is 00:38:57 Okay. That's Bill Mollichick. Hey, John Gruden, what's going on? Gruden. And trade a first round pick for Stavon Gilmore. Would you do that? I think so, yes. I think if I was the Raiders, I want him free.
Starting point is 00:39:11 If you can afford him, though, like to Jay's point, like this is. Justin Herbert's not getting worse. Derek Carves never played better. I'd beat Kansas City. And I think if I'm the Raiders, I'd, do a first for Stefan Gilmore. I think I would because I think I can, I think that's the team that I'm interested in. There's Bill. John's going on. They'll call me back. This is Belichick, Foxborough. So I heard. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me
Starting point is 00:39:39 with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.
