Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, S&L's Mikey Day and head writer,
Starting point is 00:00:18 Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. On the Look Back at it podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:06 From 1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year.
Starting point is 00:01:23 It was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok podcast network on TikTok. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart
Starting point is 00:02:23 radio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go on a jammed Monday live in Los Angeles. This is The Heard, wherever you may be and however you may be listening today. Thanks for joining us. We're on Fox Sports Radio, IHeart Radio, and FS1. One hour from now, Colin was right and Colin was wrong. Plenty of both today.
Starting point is 00:02:56 And Joy Taylor is joining me on a Monday. The weather is now becoming a factor in the NFL, which is, is just another element to this league, which is the world's best league, I think. Joy, how are you? That was brutal. Last night. At the end of the game, when you couldn't even see them, I'm like, we have the most amazing technology, right, in the world.
Starting point is 00:03:18 You cannot see them on the field. It was insane. And Lamar actually threw the ball about as well as he's thrown the ball. It's incredible. So I'll get to that in a second. So, you know, it's interesting. Sometimes I'll make a prediction, or you will make a prediction, or Joy or John will make a prediction. And it just takes a while for it to happen. Right? Like you're like,
Starting point is 00:03:38 I always joke my wife, she'll walk into a restaurant and she'll be like six weeks. It's not going to work. Feng shui's bad because she used to work in that industry. And, you know, the restaurant will survive for a while. But over time, she has the ability to kind of, having been in that business, go, this doesn't work, the menus off, the bathrooms aren't clean. It's going to be about six weeks to eight weeks and it'll fold. And I felt like with the Seattle Seahawks, the first month of the year, first five, six weeks of the year,
Starting point is 00:04:06 my prediction was, this franchise now doesn't do much well outside of Russell Wilson. He's the life preserver on a failing organization. Now, finally, week nine, UC Seattle, they're becoming what I thought they would become.
Starting point is 00:04:23 It's why I like the Rams this weekend. Ask yourself, what do they do well, outside of Russell Wilson. The Rams do a lot of things well. They're clever offensively. I'm not sure there's a team in the NFL deeper at tight end and wide receiver than the L.A. Rams. They're 31 and 0 when they lead at half, McVeigh is.
Starting point is 00:04:41 They play well from behind. They play well from ahead. They have the best fourth quarter defense in the NFL. They have the best corner in the league, the best defensive tackle in the league. The Rams do a bunch of things. If Goff had to sit, they have the best punter in the league. if they had to sit golf for two weeks, you figure they could win a game. Could Seattle win a game in this league without Russell Wilson?
Starting point is 00:05:05 Pete Carroll's defense, that cover three now is obviously the league has figured it out. They gave away the farm to get Jamal Adams. A player I like, but he's a safety. Their last two first round picks won, Rashad Penny is an absolute bust at running back, and the linebacker from the Big 12 is not playing much. What do they do well? you tell me because I don't see it. So you can blame Russell Wilson, but this happens all the time.
Starting point is 00:05:30 I used to say this about the late Kobe Bryant when Shaq left. Kobe wanted to be the man. He didn't want to be the only man. They had to get him Powell Gasol. If you have a good corner like the Rams do and you can shut down D.K. Metcalf, what do you rely on? The running backs are always hurt. The tight ends aren't dynamic.
Starting point is 00:05:50 The offensive line is very mediocre outside of left tackle. they have no pass rush. They don't have a lockdown corner. They've got a couple of great defensive players, but there's 11 guys on the field. They've got two stars. What do they do well? The Rams have better special teams.
Starting point is 00:06:06 The Rams have a better offensive line. The Rams have a deeper wide receiving running back and tight end core. The Rams, I think, have a much better offensive coach. This is what I thought Seattle was going to be this year, which is good but not special. I've had two NFL GMs tell me this in the last two years. And these are good GMs. These are loaded rosters.
Starting point is 00:06:29 We can never figure out what the hell Seattle's doing on drafts day. What are they doing? It makes no sense. And Bucky Brooks came on last week. And we talked about Pete Carroll's defense, which, by the way, it's gotten progressively worse year after year. Here's what Bucky said about it. When the Seattle Seahawks went on that glorious run early in 2010,
Starting point is 00:06:49 when their defense, the Legion of Boom, was playing at a high level. They did something that was unconventional. They played a cover three system that was very simple. It was something that you would see in high school games on every Friday night, but they did it better than anybody else. When you see the Seattle Seahawks have success, every team in the league started stealing from that. So now more teams get used to seeing that scheme.
Starting point is 00:07:13 More teams get used to understanding how to defeat that scheme. And so you have to continue to, ball. Seattle is one and three against winning teams. Because winning teams, Buffalo, Arizona, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, winning teams do multiple things well. Miami, great special teams, terrific defense. What does Seattle do well?
Starting point is 00:07:41 Russell Wilson will take the heat today. He is a life preserver. I don't think this team can win a game in this league. Kansas City lost Mahomes last year for games. They can win games. They're still competitive. I've seen Miami win games this year with Tua and Ryan Fitzpatrick. I don't think Seattle wins a game in this league without Russell Wilson.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Go ahead, blame him. What do they do well? Kansas City does multiple things well. Steelers. Miami, Buffalo. Russ is cooked. If you have a good corner and it can take D.K. Metcalf out, Russ is cooked.
Starting point is 00:08:15 All right. So, Lamar Jackson. one of the reasons people don't like to take risks or chances is because if it fails, people will call you an idiot. People are afraid of being called out. So most Americans take a safer path. And that's okay. If that's good for your anxiety levels, you just don't want to get ripped.
Starting point is 00:08:42 But you want to know how you get rich in America. And I don't just mean financially rich. but how you get rich and enriched is taking chances, separating yourself from the pack. Now, even the biggest risk takers, the Elon Musk's, the Steve Jobs, have failed massively. But Baltimore takes this risk with Lamar Jackson. He's a better runner than a thrower. And a lot of people want to be right. And every time Lamar loses, that doesn't work.
Starting point is 00:09:15 That does not work. but yet Josh Allen loses, who is more like your classic quarterback, big, big arm, mostly throws. I never hear anybody bail on Josh Allen. Lamar Jackson lost a Bill Belichick in a monsoon in Foxborough. Why would I change my opinion on him? I look at the stats. He was good on third down. He dominated time of possession.
Starting point is 00:09:39 He was 24 or 34 in a 99 quarterback rating. He lost to Bill Belichick in a monsoon. Okay. This is interesting, though. So, first of all, Belichick deserves credit. He had Buffalo on the ropes two weeks ago, and he just beat the Ravens, and he was a play from beating Seattle in Seattle earlier in the year. New England's not tanking.
Starting point is 00:09:57 They're, that Belichick's good enough to win games. But here's a prime example. There's a lot of things I worry about with young quarterbacks. Sam Darnold can't stay healthy. Baker Mayfield, their coaches have taken the ball out of his hands. I worry that Joe Burrell will never get support in Cincinnati. I worry that Justin Herbert, the owners will never pay $9 million a year for a big time coach.
Starting point is 00:10:20 I don't worry about Lamar. He's dynamic. He's passionate. He works hard. He's pissed when he loses. He's got a good coach, a great owner, Steve Bouchade. They have a very good defense and they draft exceptionally well. I don't worry about him.
Starting point is 00:10:32 But it's funny because the more conventional quarterbacks, we don't dump on as much. But here's what's interesting. So Lamar has faced Belichick twice. And in my lifetime, no coach gives young. young quarterbacks, worse games than Belichick. In fact, that's not even arguable. I think he's like, I think he's 28 and 3 against the like rookie quarterbacks in the last like 20 years. Josh Allen of Buffalo and everybody's still on on Josh has faced him four times. He's been awful three of them and bad once. He faced him two weeks ago. Josh Allen two weeks ago,
Starting point is 00:11:10 no touchdowns a pick, a 65 pass rating 11 for 18. You didn't bail on him. Lamar has faced him twice. Last night, Lamar goes 24 or 34, 250 yards, and 98 quarterback rate. Well, I mean, in a monsoon. But it just goes to show. This is why people don't take chances. Because with Lamar, every time Lamar has a bad game, y'all bail on him. It's like, I worry more about Joe Burrow ever getting legitimate support. Cincinnati's an organization that refused. I don't even know what the latest is they wouldn't even build an indoor practice facility. Have you seen the weather in Ohio? We're not even the December yet. There was a high school, Mulder High School is a legendary football program in Cincinnati. Legendary high school football. They once had a coach Jerry Faust,
Starting point is 00:12:00 Notre Dame Highland from high school. They had an indoor practice facility. The Bengals didn't. I worry about Joe Burrell getting support. Listen, I live in Los Angeles. I know the people. I know the Spanos family. I know all this. But I worry about them committing fully to a world class coach or finding the next Brian Flores or Joe Judge. I don't worry about Lamar. Lamar's fine. He's different. I thought he threw the ball in a monsoon.
Starting point is 00:12:25 He worked better than 90% of the windshield wipers work last night in New England. But it's funny that when you take a chance and something's a little different, every time he struggles or loses, I didn't think he struggled last night. He just lost. They couldn't finish drives. We bail on him. And to me, this is why people don't take chances. because if you do, and by the way, nothing's linear.
Starting point is 00:12:48 I mean, even if you don't take, even if you take the classic quarterback, you know, the Peyton Manning, the Eli Manning, the classic pocket quarterback, they have bad games, bad years, bad stretches, but nobody calls you out for it because that's the safe pick. That's what we know. That's history. But if you take something that moves a little, throws a little quirky, is a little different, who runs a little, man, the wolves come out every loss.
Starting point is 00:13:11 And I look at Josh Allen, he's awful. against Belichick. I look at Lamar Jackson, who's younger than Joe Burrow. And I'm like, oh, he's good against Belichick. He's fine. He's one-on-one. It's not man overboard. He's never unraveled. He's different. But, listen, as Cam Newton said after the game, Belichick, he's just good. And he's really good in monsoons at home. Listen, everything that coaches throughout the week, it tends to come up. And, you know, I'm beginning to think he either has like a Staples easy button or a Buffalo Wild Wings button or just a straight direct line to the football guys
Starting point is 00:13:53 because he's like a football whisperer when it comes to anticipating what the game is going to be like, how we need to win and things like that. Joey and I talked about this Friday. you just knew all week that Cam and the Patriots, no chance. Baltimore's going to roll them. Cam was efficient. New England did what New England did. There's never been a game that I can remember that I watched the weather as it started.
Starting point is 00:14:20 And I thought, oh, this is going to be, this is literally that Belichick, if he was a meteorologist, a globalologist, or whatever they call people, if he was a Doppler, if he was a human Doppler, he literally, that is the weather that you would want in New York. England to beat the Baltimore Ravens. You couldn't see. It's perfect New England weather. Lamar is fine. All right, coming up next, I love the NFL. It's probably about 65% of the show I do. One of the reasons it is so great is what is happening in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:14:50 And I'll explain this is why the NFL is so darn good. That's coming up. Plus, top of the hour, Colin right, calling right, calling wrong. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1. and the IHard Radio app. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. Starting point is 00:15:50 this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. Starting point is 00:16:13 The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So, if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking.
Starting point is 00:16:46 What the hell does George Bush got to do a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jette. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode, with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
Starting point is 00:17:17 We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Keer Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still chasing it
Starting point is 00:18:04 and we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:18:20 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Search Learn the hard way and listen now. Rec text more than a grill, it's a lifestyle. Check it out. R-E-C-T-E-Q.com. Smart grill technology. You can turn the grill on and off with your phone. Get your cook going on your phone. Good to have you in.
Starting point is 00:18:52 So two things about Arizona that I love right now and about the NFL. In Major League Baseball, money matters. There's no salary cap. So a Dodgers or a Yankees, they have huge advantages in baseball. Like Oakland, it's hard for them. Baltimore, Seattle, it's hard to compete, smaller markets. In the NBA, markets matter.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Most guys don't want to play in Memphis or Charlotte. They like to play in L.A. LeBron liked L.A. Magic liked L.A. Shack came to L.A. Kareem came to L.A. Markets matter. In the NFL right now, here's where the five best young quarterbacks are playing.
Starting point is 00:19:28 Cincinnati, Arizona, Buffalo, Kansas City, and Baltimore. Beyond not flashy. Like, now, think about that. Oh, by the way, the most talented guy, maybe in Green Bay. And for a long time, the most accurate guy was in small market in New Orleans. Oh, by the way, some think one of the greats of all time played in Indianapolis, Peyton Manning. You know, if the NFL was the NBA, the Cowboys, would just go get the best players. But they're a wreck right now. And Arizona's fascinating.
Starting point is 00:19:59 So that's the first thing that makes the NFL great. It's not about money. It's not about market size. Draft the right quarterback and get him a good coach. And you become Miami really fast. Arizona is a remarkable story. But here's what I love about Arizona. And their general manager, Steve Kime, did something that men struggle with.
Starting point is 00:20:18 I'm seeing it a lot in politics. A real man can admit when he's wrong. Just own it, fellas. Haffee in the country. just to own it. Steve Kime admitted I whiffed on my draft picket quarterback. I'm going to redraft a quarterback. That's what Ryan Pace in Chicago couldn't do with Mitch Trubisky.
Starting point is 00:20:41 He couldn't admit he whiffed. Everybody knew 10 games in. You whiffed. Steve Kime did what men don't like to do and GMs hate to do in pro sports. You know last year's first round pick? He really whiffed on that. Start over. that to me defines a man.
Starting point is 00:21:02 Like that's one of the things to me. Oh, I just whiffed. I just made a mistake. Not going to hide behind. Development. I mean, the offensive line. No, Josh Rosen and Kyler Murray. It's not close.
Starting point is 00:21:17 It's nothing against Josh, but it's not close. This whole thing in Arizona, think about this. One year ago, Steve Kimes was on the rope. Cliff Kingsbury couldn't win in college in the crappy Big 12. Forget the NFC West. One year later, they get the right guy, Kyler gets better, and here's where we're at. And it all starts with the general manager who just owned it. He's like, hey, I'm not going to sit here and pretend that this Kyler Murray guy's not as good as Josh Rosen.
Starting point is 00:21:50 I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to pretend to make me feel better. I am going to roll the dice on a college coach who got fired by his alma mater because the world's changing. By the way, he also did this with his coach. Remember, he hired Steve Wilkes. Like one year in, he's like, I made a mistake. I'm starting over. Got a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:22:11 I made a mistake. This league is about coaching quarterback. He moved off both positions in one year. Nobody does that. That's not the way the NFL works because general managers are trying to protect their arces. But the fact that Arizona, we can all give Kyler Murray a pat on the back and he's great. He's great. But the GM here twice with the two most valuable positions moved off them in a year.
Starting point is 00:22:34 That does not happen in the NFL. People try to defend their draft picks and their coaching picks forever. And that's when you unravel. That's when it's like, okay, year three with a bad coach, that's three bad drafts. It happens. Hiring coaches in this league is a 50-50 proposition at best. Brian Flores mostly doesn't happen. That's not the way it usually works.
Starting point is 00:22:56 You give a guy a coaching job. He's never been a coach even in high school. And two years in, you're like, is he the third or fourth best coach in the NFL? It's not the way it works. It's not the way it works with Tom Coughlin. You hire a guy from Boston College and he beats Belichick and Brady twice in the Super Bowl. It doesn't work that way. It usually looks a lot like what Cleveland's done for the last 25 years.
Starting point is 00:23:16 Just a couple years doesn't work. New guy doesn't work. What the Jets have done for the last 25 years. Four years. like Pittsburgh is not the way it works in this league. New England's not the way it works. So I just think it's, if you look where all the young quarterbacks are right now, NBA and NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball, this would never happen since the Arizona, Buffalo, Kansas City, Baltimore.
Starting point is 00:23:40 By the way, do you want to see here is that Kyler Murray to D-Hop play. Here's the, here's the radio call, Cardinals Radio. Murray back to throw, flushed out, rolling left in trouble, slips a tackle. Got to launch it. He does. Left side. Into the end zone, jump ball. And it is. Is it caught? Is it caught? Oh, my goodness. It's caught. DeAndre Hopkins caught it. He caught it for a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:24:04 With one second left. I can't believe it. You've got to be joking me. Once again, Arizona's game was the best television product in America. If the Seahawks games are all weird, the Arizona games are all riveting. Joy with the news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:24:27 Nothing better than the local call. Oh, it's the best. Because you're allowed to be a homer. You're expected to love your local team. And you should. It's your team. I love it. So the NFC East, still wide open after the Eagles,
Starting point is 00:24:39 27-17 lost to the Giants yesterday, which I believe you called. Giants are the best team, right? Like, that was not that difficult. That Giants took the game over five minutes in. It looks great. Philly is holding on to first place for now. but Carson Wentz was very unhappy with the team's performance in this crucial game,
Starting point is 00:24:56 especially on third down. I knew we struggle on third down. I didn't realize we were that poor. Anytime you're 0 for 9, obviously, you're not doing something very well. And hats off to them. You know, they had a good game plan. That's a good defense over there. They made it hard on us.
Starting point is 00:25:10 But we definitely made it tougher on ourselves, left some plays out there, didn't execute enough. And, yeah, 0 for 9 on 3rd down is extremely frustrating. But they made a lot more plays than us, and we didn't deserve to win. No, you didn't. No, no. Giants are a better team right now. Giants again, they're Miami. Like, we gave up on them like after a month last year with the dolphins. And then you look up at like week nine and you're like, oh, wait, they're actually a tough out.
Starting point is 00:25:33 They're good. Well, they have a new coach this year and a young quarterback in a COVID-shortened season. And they're trending in the right direction. Daniel Jones, most impressed I've ever been. He can run, too. Oh, no, he can really. He's Alex Smith with a better arm and probably faster flat. straight speed. As long as he doesn't show up on his own feet, he's good. He struggles with
Starting point is 00:25:55 a feet thing. He can turn it up. They also had 11 penalties for 74 yards on top of going 0 for 9 on third down. So that was also, Wentz was sacked three times and was hit 13 times and completed just 56% of his 37 pass attempts. Giants D-Lines really good, actually. It doesn't get an easier for them though. They are 3-5-1, the top of the NFC East. Giants are in second place at 3-7, Washington 2-7, Cowboys and last place at 2-and-7. But their next games coming up for the Philadelphia Eagles are troubling. So they have Cleveland's next at 6 and 3, Green Bay at 7 and 2, New Orleans at 7 and 2, and Arizona at 6 and 3.
Starting point is 00:26:32 Oh, that's trouble. Yeah, that's got 1 and 3 or 0 and 4 written all over it. It could get really ugly for the Eagles moving forward the way they're playing right now. What's the Fox bet line on the Philadelphia Eagles? Where's that game at? Is that in Cleveland, Joy? Let me see. Cleveland's been home a lot lately. That'll probably be in Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:26:50 It is, no, it's home. So it's Philadelphia at home? No, it's Philadelphia at Cleveland. Okay, so let me guess. Cleveland is favored by two and a half is my guess. Let's look that up. I'm going to guess Cleveland's favored by two and a half. What is it, John?
Starting point is 00:27:05 Three and a half. Cleveland's favored by three and a half. I may take Philadelphia there. The hook. Because you know what? It's going to be, first of all, the weather, it's Ohio, will probably be bad. Yeah. And it'll be sloppy and nobody's going to throw much.
Starting point is 00:27:18 But I'd still take Cleveland to win that. Even if, well, even if they were to win that game, they then have Seattle, Green Bay, New Orleans, and Arizona coming up after that. So it doesn't get any better. Ben Rothesberger didn't practice last week, but it did not slow him or the Steelers down at all against the Bengals. Big Ben had one of his best games of the year through a season high, 333 yards and four touchdowns. Pittsburgh's defense was a big problem for Cincinnati, sacking Joe Burrow four times and holding him to the lowest completion percentage of his career. they also kept the Bengals from converting a single third down. If you took the 12 best players in this game, does Pittsburgh have all 12?
Starting point is 00:28:01 Now, T. Higgins, Joe Burrell may be 11 or 12. T. Higgins is really good. But when you watch this game, there's nothing you could do to win this game. Well, that's why I wasn't super concerned about Ben being out of practice all week because it was Cincinnati. And I mean, this is this is a division game also. So Pittsburgh's going to get up for that. And they want to welcome Joe Burrow. As DJ Watts said, welcome him to the AFC North properly.
Starting point is 00:28:28 So they're going to play really hard on top of that. And Ben, you know, Ben missing two days of practice going up against Cincinnati is not a huge deal. Now, this was still a blowout situation for them. But Pittsburgh's defense is really good. And if you're an excellent defense going up against a rookie quarterback with a patchwork offensive line, it's over. This is a predictable outcome. So Steelers remain undefeated atop the AFC North.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Ravens 6 and 3 after their loss last night. Browns 6 and 3 and the Bengals are 2, 6 and 1. So the Steelers have significantly pulled ahead. I don't feel very good about Cleveland right now. I think Miami is now going to be a wild card team for sure. And by the way, the Raiders keep winning. So the Raiders are kind of quietly just being more consistent as late. So it's like when you, Miami's defense is better than Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:29:13 And the Raiders' offense is better than Cleveland. what is Cleveland better at than those two teams? So I had Cleveland as a playoff team, but the way Miami's playing right now and the way the Raiders are winning, it's like those feel like not just wildcard teams, but dangerous wildcard teams. So the dolphins continue to roll. Well, two as their starter. He threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns in the 29-21 win over the Chargers.
Starting point is 00:29:37 He's undefeated since taking over for Ryan Fitzpatrick and extended Miami's win streak to five games. They are now sitting at six and three, which is their best start since 2001. Does any young quarterback throw a, we know this. We knew he was accurate. I mean, Tua is so accurate. The ball is always. You know, it's like we always think about size and arm.
Starting point is 00:29:59 You still got to throw the ball in small windows. Tua throws, this is where he's breeze. He throws a beautiful, accurate football. That is those two things, how you play in big moments, in big games, and how accurate you are, are the two most important things to me in a. college quarterback because you're going to have to throw people open in the NFL. The game is a lot faster. So the more accurate you are at the college level, the more that's going to transfer.
Starting point is 00:30:24 Yeah, he threw a ball to Devante Parker in the corner. It wasn't a touchdown. It was literally the only place you could put it. No, it was a perfect pass. It was a perfect throw and you're like, okay, that's not an easy throw. That corner fade is not an easy throw. I mean, it's not really on Devante Parker. You had to go up and get it still.
Starting point is 00:30:43 It was very well defended, so he didn't get his other foot down. You can't, that has to be either only catchable by one guy or incomplete. Yeah, no, no. He put it in the perfect place. Like, you couldn't have thrown a better ball in that situation. So the dolphins are right there with the Bills and the AFCs. Bills, seven and three, dolphins, six and three. Patriots in four and five, and obviously, we know what the jets are.
Starting point is 00:31:03 But Justin Herbert, 20 of 32, 187 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Two, a kind of got away with an almost interception during the game. but not entirely his fault, but it gets the first one against Justin Herbert, so I like that. Yeah, good stuff. Joy with the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd Lie News. Michael Vic now joining me.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Brought to you by Mercedes-Benz, the best or nothing. It's so interesting because Michael, I'm looking around the league now, and I see a lot of Michael Vicks. I see guys who aren't the classic 6-4 and guys that can move. Let's start with this. I defended Russell Wilson today. I said, take him off this team. How many games do they win? I can tell he's pressing.
Starting point is 00:31:48 So let's go back. I'm not sure if it was Atlanta or it was Philadelphia. You had a team that couldn't stop anybody. And I want you to take me. Was it Philadelphia back about six, seven years ago? It was Philadelphia 2012. And you couldn't stop anybody. Tell me what it's like when you're a quarterback,
Starting point is 00:32:08 knowing you have to win by shootout. You feel like you got to do everything. everything. You feel like the onus is on you. To pass it, to run it, to direct the offense, to lead touchdown drives. You almost feel like you got to make up for what the defense is not going to do. And that season, I could vividly remember being three and one, getting off to a good start. I was cooking. I was playing well. Even the guys around me was playing well. Even with the offensive line shuffle that we had going on, we was holding it down. And the defense was doing the same, but you could still see the flaws. And, you know, it was a lot of high scoring games.
Starting point is 00:32:48 And it started out well, but it didn't finish. Well, we finished four and 12. We started out three in one and then we lost a bunch of games. But I just felt like I had to do everything. I had to be perfect. And I know Russ is feeling that. It's a natural thing as a quarterback when your defense is not playing as well. And when you're getting knocked around and getting hit, you start trying to do too much. You become careless with the football. You start throwing it into traffic. You start trying things. And, you know, it's sort of a natural progression, you know, as a quarterback to try to, you know, play the hero. And I know that's what Russell is doing right now.
Starting point is 00:33:21 It's unfortunate, but sometimes this is how the game go. So I'm not worried about Lamar Jackson. He lost a Bill Belichick and a monsoon. I think the Ravens have other issues. What is your take? Because we loved Baltimore last year, but I don't think the onus is just on Lamar. Are there things that you worry about? Do you worry about Lamar?
Starting point is 00:33:42 you know him very, very well. What do you worry about with them? I don't worry about Lamar. When I look at the game last night, Lamar was very efficient in the passing game, even though it was a monsoon coming down and it was inclement weather. I was never a good pass to the football in the rain.
Starting point is 00:33:59 You know, Lamar has a big hand, so obviously, you know, the grip was there. He threw the ball well. He ran it well, over 300 yards of total offense, but Bill Belichick has a way of taking away the things that you do best, What I am concerned about with the Baltimore Ravens is the run defense. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:34:16 The Patriots is physical at the point of attack last night. And, you know, we talk about all the time. The team who has the most success in the run game is going to have the direct correlation to winning the football game. So, you know, I'm not worried about Lamar. I think they need to pick it up in a couple of different areas. But I honestly say this. If it was a dry night last night, I think they would have had a better chance of winning.
Starting point is 00:34:40 And there was some drops. some plays that wasn't made. It was the fumble that Ingram had that, you know, it's not on Lamar. It's on the offense as an entirety. So, you know, they just got to keep pushing forward and kind of put the game last night behind them. Yeah, that's how I feel.
Starting point is 00:34:56 So the one guy that runs around in this league, I think you're much faster than Russell Wilson, but I watch Kyler and I do see some of Michael Vick. You know what I mean? Like you weren't the classic 6-3 guy. You would outrun. defenders. Russell doesn't outrun defenders. Russell, you know, he
Starting point is 00:35:15 runs smartly, but he doesn't outrun anybody. Kyler outruns dudes. When you watch Kyler Murray, what are things, I mean, do you watch him and think, man, he does that better than me? Do you see yourself in him? You know, I put myself
Starting point is 00:35:31 in Kyle's shoes and if I would have had that spread system, spread offense, because the offense he's running, it looks fun. You know, it's dynamic. You know, it It's totally throwing defenses off. And, you know, obviously you have to have the right guy behind the center in order to make it working.
Starting point is 00:35:49 Kyle is that guy. He, you know, he's got exceptional speed and quickness. You can't see him behind the offensive line. And then when he raises up the throw, he's throwing the football accurately. So, you know, this guy is going to take the league by storm. He's going to continue to play and ascend in the right direction. He's going to continue to get better. Sky is the limit for this guy.
Starting point is 00:36:11 and Arizona, you know, is in really good shape in terms of their schedule and the future with Calais and quarterback. I see a lot of him and me, man, but, you know, I will say he's doing it a lot better. Well, I think you said something that's interesting is that he is hard to see behind the line. Like, there is a deception part to Kyler Murray that's real. Now, Tua is not being asked to do as much, but I got to tell you, in terms of judgment, you know, a lot of this league, Michael, is, I mean, you've been there, you have a quarter second. Whatever it is, Tua makes really good, quick decisions.
Starting point is 00:36:52 What do you make of the dolphins and Tua so far? I think starting with Tua, you know, on top of him making good decisions, it's his vision. You know, somewhere like Kala Murray, you know, you know, those guys in that six feet of less category, we got to be, you know, good decision makers, but we also have to have the vision because we're not 6-3, we're not 6-4, we don't drop back and just see things developing. We got to see it pre-snap, and we got to see it happening as we drop and as the play is going on. And it's not the easiest thing, you know, you got to naturally find passing lanes, and that's what tour is doing.
Starting point is 00:37:31 Yeah. And it's acquaintance is accuracy, so I think all that bottled up together makes him who he is. and the fact that, you know, he's left-handed doing it, makes it even sweeter for me to watch. But this kid is just, you know, he's a diamond in the rough. And, you know, we were talking about a couple weeks ago, him being on the audition. Well, I think he's passed that audition.
Starting point is 00:37:54 I think the Miami Dolphins can move forward with him. You know, fortunately for him, they have an incredible defense. You know, I think they're excelling all three phases of the game. And all tour has to do is just do his part. And, you know, from the decision. decision-making, you know, he was the same way in Alabama, through the ball, accurately made good decisions. And, you know, it's a direct parallel right now to the NFL. He's doing the same thing. It's been no drop-off. So he's only going to continue to get better. He said the game is getting easier for him.
Starting point is 00:38:24 And hopefully it continues to stay that way. Yeah, you make a really good point. It's like Alabama. Throw 25 times, complete 18, don't make any picks. Alabama's always got great defense. There is a, there is a parallel between what Brian Flores is about. And by the way, Brian Flores is a Belichick disciple. Nick Saban's a Belichick disciple. It is, and I'm sure there were phone calls about this. I think you're right, too, is doing the Alabama thing. So, all right, Michael, great seeing you. 13 years for Pro Bowls, Michael Vick.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Thanks, buddy. Thanks, Scott. Many of you, Tom Brady won because it was system. Tom Brady was lucky. I got to admit yesterday. Tom Brady got a little lucky. And I'll explain that coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd.

Starting point is 00:41:18 where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so... That you're finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:41:32 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Starting point is 00:42:49 Go to CarShield. Colin right, Colin wrong, top of next hour. So Tampa Bay is now a 7 and 3 football team. Is a good football team, right? But they got, they actually won twice yesterday. They won the game. which we thought they would.
Starting point is 00:43:06 Christian McCaffrey was out. Carolina's a total rebuild. And they'd come off a horrible performance the week before. So you knew they were going to have a very focused week of practice. Tampa Bay did. But they also won because Drew Breeze has banged up for about three weeks. So think about this. Do you know who's going to decide this division?
Starting point is 00:43:23 Not Brady. Not Breeze. Not Matt Ryan. James Winston. Because in the next three weeks, the Saints would James Winston play Atlanta twice. and Atlanta's hot. They've won three or four.
Starting point is 00:43:36 Start looking at New Orleans schedule. They'll beat Denver. We know that. They're going to beat Denver. Denver's not a good football team. But they play Atlanta twice the next three weeks, and James probably starts both those games. And it's going to be very interesting.
Starting point is 00:43:48 Remember, I said this last week about Tampa. Tampa, nobody, I don't care who it is, including the Steelers. Outside of the Chiefs, I wouldn't give any team in the NFL a shot. Even with COVID, where there's no crowds, to win back-to-back-to-back road games, especially if it's against good quarterbacks and good coaches. And in the NFC, you've got a lot of good coaches and a lot of good quarterbacks. Tampa Bay is not going to win three straight road games as a wildcard team. They have to win the division.
Starting point is 00:44:16 They've got to get a home game. You can win a couple roadies. Remember, the Super Bowl's in Tampa. And if you win the division, your first playoff games in Tampa. You can win road games. But you're not winning three straight roadies. So they need a break. They got it.
Starting point is 00:44:28 is that now Atlanta is on fire, and Atlanta plays the Saints twice, and the Saints are on a backup quarterback. If it was Teddy Bridgewater, like last year, I'd feel great. With James, I don't know how I feel. He could be very good. But when I watched this division, the two things that jumped out to me with Tampa, they got a bit of a break here. They really did get a bit of a break because you know they won't be as efficient
Starting point is 00:44:56 with James as Breeze. Why would they be? He just got there. There's no preseason. He hasn't had the snaps. He hasn't had to practice snaps. So it's not going to be great. And Atlanta right now offensively is really, really good.
Starting point is 00:45:06 But the two things I didn't like about Tampa, they corrected both of them. I think this is a power football team. I think this is cake and the passing is icing. This team last week was all icing and no cake. They wouldn't run the football. I thought yesterday Ronald Jones and Fernette, they figured it out. We're really very capable of owning the clock, running the football, about 55, 57% of the time.
Starting point is 00:45:29 And I thought Tampa went back to that, which, of course, once they did, opened up all the passing lanes for Godwin, A.B., Gronk, and Mike Evans. That was the first thing. And the second thing I noticed is when you give Brady protection in a running game, they're really, really good. So the key for Tampa is going to be, is their offensive line able to create a running game and give Tommy time? Because when you have a running game, they can't cheat. pins their ears back. The linebackers have to play the run. And so I think they kind of solved two issues. They went much more power, which gave Tom more time, which opened up all their passing. And they got a huge break. So like the Atlanta Falcons and James Winston are going to control
Starting point is 00:46:16 this division. And in the next three weeks, we could have a new leader. So I was going to say this. So my stat, we were preparing for the show this morning, and the staff started laughing at me. So I do the herd hierarchy on Tuesday, but the bears won't be in it, and I doubt the Vikings will. So I did it today. I'm not going to put it on the air until tomorrow. But I gave my top 10 teams. And I said, is everybody sure Miami's not the fourth best team in the league? So nobody would argue this morning, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, top two.
Starting point is 00:46:48 I think it's also reasonable to assume that the Saints have crushed Tampa twice. they're three. I can tell you tomorrow, that's my top three. Then you get into four. Are we sure Miami's not in it? Well, the Rams beat them. Arizona beat them. And two is only getting better.
Starting point is 00:47:12 So this morning, you say to yourself, well, the Packers, this morning, if, now remember, Miami is not lost since October 4th, and if you look at their next three games, they're going to win their next three games. If Miami played Green Bay today, who's got the better defense? It is not close. Who's got the better special teams?
Starting point is 00:47:36 Who's got the better coach? Check, check, check, check Miami. Now, with Ryan Fitzpatrick, a natural gunslinger, Miami was prone to mistakes. They were a little hot and cold. They've taken the cold out. They don't make any mistakes. So now I've got a head coach who's better, I think, in Miami than Green Bay, a defense that's significantly better, they match up great with Green Bay because the Packers are very
Starting point is 00:48:01 Devonte Adams reliant at wide receiver and the dolphins have two excellent corners, Rhodes and Byron Jones. So when I do my top 10, it's all about matchups. Like I could never put Tampa over New Orleans unless New Orleans went in a four-game losing streak. Even if they lost with James, I've seen with Breeze the Saints hammer Tampa twice. So when I do my top 10, it comes down to who do I think would win if they met tomorrow. I think the Rams are good. They hammered them.
Starting point is 00:48:33 I think Arizona is good. They went in the road and beat them. What about Buffalo? Well, they don't play until week 17 and they don't count the first game with Ryan's Fitzpatrick starting. By the way, this is why Brian Flores went with Tua is that he was sitting at practice going, we have great special teams and great defense. If we don't turn it over, we're a tough out. We're all freaking out about that.
Starting point is 00:48:54 No, Tua is perfect for this team. Ryan Fitzpatrick's on a team with no defense. He can win shootouts. Once the defense is good, Ryan Fitzpatrick is a liability. So, I mean, it's Miami the fourth best team in the league? Who's better? Hour two next.
