Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform?
Starting point is 00:00:24 We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:00:57 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Cliver Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, my basketball and college football journey, or my career in sports media. Well, now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifers Show. This is a place for raw, unfilled conversations with athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
Starting point is 00:01:27 but celebrated. So let's get to it. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok's podcast network on TikTok. On the Look Back at it podcast. From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
Starting point is 00:01:43 84's big to me. I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Starting point is 00:01:55 Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for listening to The Heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday from 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Herd. You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. What up? Welcome in.
Starting point is 00:02:35 This is the herd, wherever you may be, and however you may be making it as part of your day. Thanks so much. Where will Sam Donald be playing next year? You know who we'll know? The old P. Petros Papadakis. S.C. Legend.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Host of award-winning PMS, Petros and Money show. afternoons perpetually on AM 570. Welcome in. I'm Doug Gottlie filling in for calling radio only, which means no pants today. None of us. No pants today. None. Shirts, yes.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Shoes, absolutely. Masks in public, in private, got to wear masks. Pants? Optional. Optional. Welcome in. If you listen to Southern California, Santa Ana wins on the horizon, which means potential fire danger, but also means
Starting point is 00:03:30 tomorrow beautiful day, right? It'll be like spectacular. No smog, no fog. Hope Mom cooked the breakfast with no hog. The Lakers won the title last year. I think the Clippers might have been a better collection of players, but the Lakers became a better team
Starting point is 00:03:50 and survived the bubble. I'm not sure that the better team or the cohesive, if that is the same this year with the Lakers, they tried to raise their team. We got a lot to get to with the Lakers. I have some thoughts on the Nets for you and some thoughts for you on Doug Peterson, openly opining to stay in Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:04:10 But let me get to this. The Golden State Warriors have been an amazing basketball team. Now, Joe Lekup, who owns the team, said, you know, they're years ahead of everybody else. Pride comes before the fall. It just does. And they were great. And I thought, and I've said it on this radio show before, that the Warriors needed KD as much as KD needed the Warriors.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Yes, they won 73 games. Everybody always talks about, they won 73 games. But that was not a 73 win championship team. They did not win the title. And that team was set to lose Harrison Barnes or overpay Harrison Barnes. And so they lost Harrison Barnes and had to upgrade. and the league was catching up to the Warriors. Remember, what they were able to do
Starting point is 00:05:06 wasn't just make jump shots to win an NBA championship. They were able to play small ball in winning time. Play with Draymond Green and Andre Guadala as their two big men, if you will, and win championships. That's what they did, right? André Goddala was their MVP because he was wide open for a reason. Right. And then the next year, instead of leaving Andre Godal open,
Starting point is 00:05:32 then left Harrison Barnes open and he couldn't make the shots. Combined that with Draymond getting suspended. Combined that with Bogot getting hurt. And what should have been another championship was not. But Bogot was never the same. Harrison Barnes was leaving. Iguadala was close to over the hill. So was Barbosa.
Starting point is 00:05:51 They needed an addition and they traded in the strength in numbers for Kevin Durant, who carried them over the threshold for the next two years. and they would have won another title in his last season had he not gotten hurt. I think everybody kind of, you know, if he didn't get hurt, they're going to beat the Raptors. But here's why I think the Warriors are dead. You can be a great player. You cannot do it not only by yourself, but you have to do it in a setting that fits how you play and who you need to play around. Steve Nash, I know he never won a title, but Steve Nash is the greatest example of that.
Starting point is 00:06:29 How many people remember the fact that Steve Nash, when. drafted in the NBA. Do you know he was drafted by? The Phoenix Suns. And he could never get on the court because they had another point guard. His name's Jason Kidd. So they trade away Steve Nash to the Dallas Mavericks and Nash's career only took off because he played for Don Nelson, who was like the first big time coach to use small ball. Right? They used small ball and he was great. They took a power forward out of the lane, you take a center out of the lane essentially. The two coaches that Steve Nash had his success with, Don Nelson, small ball, Mike Dan Tony, not only small ball but transition ball, just ball screen after ball screen after small screen,
Starting point is 00:07:15 and they use Sean Marion at the four. Do I think Steve Nash was great? Yes. Do I think he would have been great in a traditional system at the time? No. I think it would have been really good. but when he was in Phoenix, they didn't put him in, like nowadays, you would put Jason Kidd and Steve Nash on the floor at the same time.
Starting point is 00:07:34 And they'd be unbelievable. But that wasn't the case back then. You have to find the right fit. You know, look, people talk about when LeBron James got to the Eastern Conference finals with, you know, with Boobie Gibson as his, as one of his guard. It's true. It was a joke of a roster that he personally, took down Detroit and got them to the NBA finals. It should be pointed out that that was an
Starting point is 00:08:01 era where Alan Iverson did the same with the 76ers. The East was so bad that one guy could carry a team that just played defense and one guy scored up points to carry him. But for LeBron to be peak LeBron, look at the difference in LeBron two years ago in LeBron last year. Give him another superstar that he can bring out the best in and you get the best in LeBron. when he was in Miami it wasn't just that he played with Duane Wade, it was that they took LeBron
Starting point is 00:08:36 from Cleveland, Cleveland was a 60-win team, you'd take their best player, he took Bosch from Toronto, they were a 50-win team, you took away their best player, so to your competition go, and then you add arguably the best shooter in the sport at that time, you take him away from the Celtics and
Starting point is 00:08:52 they collapse in the second year, obviously did that. This doesn't diminish from LeBron's greatness in only paints an accurate portrayal of for LeBron to be great, he's got to have other guys that can make plays that he can create shots for, for Steph Curry to be great. And he is great. But would he be the, would he be the historically great game-changing player that he is now considered if he wouldn't, it's not just playing with Clay. It's not just playing with KD. It's not just playing with KD. that the setup of that team
Starting point is 00:09:33 was incredible defensively at four other positions to hide that Steph was just going to go for steals. And offensively, it allowed him to play as much without the basketball as with the basketball. Think about it. Think about his best teammates. All right, Clay Thompson doesn't dribble.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Shoots, passes, defense. But take Clay out of the mix. This isn't about Clay. Look around that roster now. Andrew Wiggins, He's a scorer and he can play defense. But he is not a creative passer. He is not a ball handler. Keep looking.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Draymond Green doesn't play last night and it gets even more. James Wiseman isn't a passer. When they were at their best, Andrew Bogot was as good a passer as any big guy in the game. Also a great illegal screener, right? But when you add great passer, Andre Godala, like a point forward. Draymond Green, point forward.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Kevin Durant, point forward. Leandro Barbosa, kind of a quasi-scoring but point guard. Sean Livingston, he was a point guard before he became this mid-range monster late in his NBA career. They surrounded Steph Curry defensively with guys who could cover his weakness and offensively, same thing. Steph is not really a point guard. He's better without the basketball moving around and then creating when he catches it than he is creating for other people. It doesn't mean he can't pass. Doesn't mean he doesn't like the pass, but he's also a high turnover guy,
Starting point is 00:11:04 and that's not really what he does or how they play. And now they've brought in a very talented roster. Look, if you look at their roster on paper, you're like, ooh, okay, Kelly Ubre, he could average 1520, and, and Andrew Wiggins, he could average 15, 20, and James Wiseman eventually could average 10, 15 points a game. And if Draymond will be wide open, he could average 10 points. And look at it, like, that's not the way it works. They shot the ball well because they passed.
Starting point is 00:11:34 pass the ball well because they had all kinds of guys that could create shots for each other. And that is all gone. Now the only two pastors they have is Draymond, who can't score and Steph who you don't want him making every play. Not just because they lost clay. Obviously, that is the death knell, but because of the new construction of the team, which they had to do on the fly, I don't see the Warriors being contenders at all. And it's a really hard one to unwind.
Starting point is 00:12:08 Really hard one to unwind. All right, coming up next. Clippers do what the Clippers do, right? Look great in the first game of the regular season. What does that mean for the Lakers? What does that mean for the Clippers long term? Where does Sam Darnold play next year? And with all this coaching movement,
Starting point is 00:12:31 Clay Hilton's still in charge with the love-hate relationship with the SC fan base. We get to it all with the O.P. Petrus Papadakis joins us next. I'm Doug Gottlie. This is The Hurt. more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the IHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football, or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement
Starting point is 00:13:40 to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger.
Starting point is 00:14:07 So, if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, This is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
Starting point is 00:14:31 I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:14:55 I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:14 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games. And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Trip Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it.
Starting point is 00:15:50 And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:16:06 And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free, our heart radio app.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Search, learn the hard way, and listen now. Doug Ghaly, been for Colin. This is The Hurt. Petrus Papad Deco, so join us momentarily. Look, I think the NBA, and there's this new story out of Houston where John Wall was sent home even though he tested negative for coronavirus. Apparently contact tracing with another player testing positive.
Starting point is 00:16:49 DeMarcus cousins also apparently being sent home. But like, look, do I think James Hardin is doing the Costanza driving around the parking lot, dragging the World Series trophy, trying to get himself sent out of Houston? Of course I do. But I do understand, like, look. We were a championship team five minutes ago. You have fired our GM. You fired our coach.
Starting point is 00:17:15 You brought in John Walt. Like, Boogie Cousins is supposed to be the stabilizer? Like, forget about the stories about Boogie Cousins when he's in Sacramento. Or some of the stories about him when he was in Golden State. Like, DeMarcus Cousins wasn't good at basketball when we last saw him play basketball. He's torn his Achilles tendon in his ACL and he put. plays a position which is no longer truly needed to compete at the top of the NBA, when the best thing you can say about Boogie Cousins is, you know, he shoots threes.
Starting point is 00:17:51 Like, yeah, that's supposed to be just a cherry on top of the big guy. You know, he's a shell of his former self, and he's traditionally played a style of the position that isn't really needed anymore. It isn't really need it anymore. So I'm just going to sit there and tell you that I understand, like, I understand why James Hardin is acting like James Hardin. And oh yeah, by the way, the idea that we're surprised, James Hardin has his number retired in a strip club.
Starting point is 00:18:28 And while that may work on Twitter and social media and social circles, the reality is, yeah, that's not really the makings of an NBA champion. And one of the reasons that the Thunder trading him to be, begin with. So fascinating days in the NBA. Petrus Papadakas co-hosts an award-winning afternoon show. It's called PMS on AM 570 in Los Angeles. You also hear them call college football games for our friends at Fox and Fox Sports One. The old, Merry Christmas to you. How are you? Hey, Merry Christmas. Happy holidays to you and all your listeners. Nice to hear from you, Doug. Everything going all right? Yeah. Lakers, Clippers. That's the Clippers. That's the Clippers. NBA.
Starting point is 00:19:10 championship. I guess I believe they are getting rings tomorrow for once again beating the Lakers opening game of the season. But what's what's your takeaway from watching last night? Well, to be honest with you, not much. I mean, I remember when the Clippers were supposed to be really good with Chris Paul and celebrated in the Lakers were very down as they have been up until last year and the Lakers won. And everybody freaked out, you know, it was a game in November.
Starting point is 00:19:51 And it didn't really mean anything in the grand scheme of things. Obviously, you understand this better than I do. But, I mean, it was nice for Paul George to look like he was Paul George outside of the bubble for Clipper fans, I'm sure. And about the organization and its history. they still have Kauai Leonard and Paul George at a pretty good roster, probably the second best team in the West for all the experts like yourself. So I didn't take much away from it at all.
Starting point is 00:20:29 More so, we had Jeannie Bus. I mean, we're the Clipper Station, but we really have more access to the Lakers beliefs to what was going on with Paul George and Kauai Leonard last year and the way the organization is the local people. ever since the Blake Griffin days, they've kind of been more of a highlight team. And we had what, Rob Polenka on, telling us parables and all kinds of regaling us with stories of, and we had Jeannie Bus on this week. I think it was Monday.
Starting point is 00:21:15 And she was kind of near tears talking about her dad and the ring ceremony and what it will mean to her after all the hard times that they did go through to kind of be able to, even though there's no fans in there. And she lamented that. It was kind of the takeaway. Because, I mean, how much have we talked about over the years? Her brother and her brother, remember that? No. You don't remember Chas, the bartender?
Starting point is 00:21:55 No. Okay, you remember the other bus that was running things for a while? Yeah, Jim Bus, yes. Yes, Jim Bus. Now, Jim Bus's number one advisor was a guy named Chaz, the bartender. No. And he was on the Laker payroll. Yeah, he was like in the media guy, Chaz.
Starting point is 00:22:12 So she remembers, trust me. So last night was kind of a real audios to a lot of bad memories. Yeah. Okay, let's get to more near and dear to your heart. Sam Darno, where does he play next year? Oh, I don't know. Come on. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:22:32 You and Darnova, you and Donald are tight like butt cheeks. And he just had the worst win in the history of the New York Jets, right? Like the ultimate to you is, let's go win a game so we don't get Trevor Lawrence. Yeah, but football players can't operate. Of course they can't. Of course they can't. Of course they can't. Like you're asking guys who are professionals, you don't want to be the laughing stock of league not win a single game?
Starting point is 00:22:55 Of course not. And it's hard to, you know, with the level of play that's in the NFL even from a really bad team. Especially when you don't have, especially when you don't have Greg Williams going casino blitz in the last play. Yeah, that helps. He's an interesting guy. He really was an unbelievably delusional interview over the years. It's pretty fantastic. But I have to say, for me, I love Sam Darnold.
Starting point is 00:23:22 I love what he was able to do at USC as kind of an afterthought of a signing at the quarterback position. Obviously what he did for Clay Helton and that regime probably hurt USC more than help. It turned out to be a lot of fools' gold as far as who's running USC and how much longer they got to do so because Donald won that Rose Bowl game and came back in glorious fashion over Penn State. Just lost slash win in the Penn State coach's career. Yeah, you lost the Clayhleton? Yeah, Franklin. So it's kind of an interesting thing when you look back on it. But, I mean, all the whispers and stuff amongst the professional NFL football pro development taught among.
Starting point is 00:24:20 But what they say is that Darnold was not developed properly at the college level, and obviously things at the NFL level have been problematic. And we see flashes of brilliance all the time from Sam Darnold. And we could see that from a lot of different guys in the NFL. Let's be honest. The hard thing in the NFL, and you even, even start to see it from these older quarterbacks, even more now, these guys like Drew Brees and Tom Brady, the hardest thing to be is consistent.
Starting point is 00:24:53 Right. It's to get to. They need to find the right mix for him to be a consistent quarterback. I think, I mean, the Raiders should take him. I think anybody should take him. Anybody that's tired of their guys should freaking take them and develop them. And I know that a lot of pro coaches are very cocky, and they feel like, hey, just give them to me. I can do it. Yeah, I can fix them. Yeah, and there's somebody out there like that that can do it.
Starting point is 00:25:21 You know, that's why measurables have become so huge in all pro sports because the level of coaching, those guys really feel like exactly that, Doug. I can fix them. So somebody will fix them or get the opportunity. I really hope it works out because I believe in his ability. I do as well. I do as well. You've called Pac-10, Pac-12 games for years.
Starting point is 00:25:47 since you played in the league. And I'm just, I'm fascinated by how so many of all of us, but even like guys that are experts that see football at a much higher level than the rest of us, how everyone seemed to undersell Justin Herbert. They didn't say he stinks, but there was like, yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:26:06 I don't know. And it wasn't like we didn't get a chance to see him, right? We saw him a ton. Did you see this? I mean, he's widely regarded. and I think people love Joe Burrow, but he's older, but they love Burrow, but he's widely regarded as the best of the rookie class of quarterbacks, and much better than Tua.
Starting point is 00:26:25 Again, and this is a small sample size. It's very early on. You're not setting a high bar there, I understand. How did so many people undersell what the Chargers would get? Well, I think if Mark Helfrich had remained the head coach, and a lot of people felt like he should have, I mean, just had one bet here, and they bought him out. When everybody was hurt, by the way,
Starting point is 00:26:52 and they had that game at Nebraska where they went for two and they didn't get it like six times and it was just like, and everyone tells you it's a great strategy to go for two, look at the numbers, but, you know, there are times which you don't get it
Starting point is 00:27:04 and it looks really bad. Anyway, go ahead. Betty, Edgson. You know, would Hellfrench have thrown the ball down the field as this guy continued to develop? You bet your ass he was, you know. And then comes Willie Taggart
Starting point is 00:27:21 and he leaves and then comes Christobal. Now, say what you will about how Christobal used Herbert, but they want a Rose Bowl, and they want a Pac-12 title. It's an identity beyond one player. I mean, your identity, you have to mold your offense to who you have, and I do think that they did a disservice to the world a little bit by not having him throw the ball downfield more in his college career under Christa-ball.
Starting point is 00:27:55 But at the same time, Christabal's an offensive line coach at heart, and they're a physical head clean off every year they play them now because they have an identity, and that's to be physical on the lines of scrimmage, no matter what stupid uniform they have on, their defensive and offensive lines punch you in the chin. And dive with how they wanted to use Herbert, I guess. There was a couple games that we did over the years that he had a couple throws, and everybody kind of looked at each other in the booth and was like, damn.
Starting point is 00:28:34 But nothing like this, nothing at the pro level like this. And nobody really saw it coming. I mean, other than I guess you could say Tom Telesco, because this guy can stand up and throw it downfield accurately at the NFL level, like the best quarterbacks in the world. And in the face of a lot of blitz and with an offense that hasn't exactly been great this year. and he's got Keenan Allen, but other than that, and Mike Williams has always hurt,
Starting point is 00:29:03 and he's got a slew of no names, and he's almost like forcing the ball onto guys Adams Apples to make him catch it. He's been more impressive than any rookie quarterback I've seen in my lifetime, and it's been fun to watch. Yeah, no, it's been really fun to watch. Petrus Papadakis, joining us Fox Sports, College Football Analyst, and of course co-host of Award-winning PMS,
Starting point is 00:29:25 that's Petrus and Money Show. Matt Money spent the co-host for years. They've been dominating the rating. here in Southern California on AM 570. I want to ask you about the college football playoff. The Rose Bowl won't be played at the Rose Bowl. That's weird. It hasn't been done since World War II.
Starting point is 00:29:40 Did they get the four best teams? Well, I don't know. No, but I understand what you could have called, but like, I'm going to put the old P in charge of the committee. You can pick any four teams. Who would you have picked? Why do you reject the premise? You've been covering, you played in the sport.
Starting point is 00:30:09 It's not a playoff. It's an invitation. Okay, but again, I'm giving you carte blanche. No TV contracts, no, you know, you work from Fox. They got the track and they got the Big Ten's. No, none of that, Big 12. None of that. I'm just asking you, you watch football.
Starting point is 00:30:23 You know football way better than 99.9% of these MOOCs. Tell me who you would have put you. You got four teams, pick four teams to play two games. Why? Holding my nose because I just have an issue with the whole thing. At the beginning of it, I mean, you can't have five power five conferences and all these other teams playing at a high level from the American and the Mountain West in particular
Starting point is 00:31:07 and we're on the Sunbelt too, for God's sake, criteria for anybody to get there unless you win the SEC or your Ohio State. And do I think Ohio State's one of the four best teams? Yeah, I do. And of course
Starting point is 00:31:26 the winner of the SEC should go in there. They win the damn thing every year other than Clemson, who's like a proxy SEC team in the ACC. You know, Clemson and the ACC seats a lot like USC in the PAC-10 in the Pete Carroll days, just really top-heavy, but makes the rest of the conference relevant, because other than the TV deal, the Pack-Town, I mean,
Starting point is 00:32:01 Des Moines in Alabama, they get pushed off the field by teams like that. They get pushed off the field by Iowa. Out of the way it's developed, but there has to be some kind of criteria to get, to be able to win the big 12th, and then I would look at it with a fine. Point of parliamentary procedure. Got it. Got it. Can LeBron claim to be an all-time Laker now that he's won a title? Does it change?
Starting point is 00:33:02 Do you know with LeBron from Laker fan? Not particularly. No, no. And it doesn't matter to Jeannie or any of those people, nor should it. I mean, they're hoisting a banner. And in three years, maybe people will feel differently, and it'll be commonplace to see him in a Laker uniform. but I mean, I grew up during showtime like you did, and guys like Rushmore, but
Starting point is 00:33:34 C. Green, anybody who was, I mean, Gary Viti, anybody. I had a Jerry Curl just because of A.C. Green. That was actually, that's a true story. I added, I'm kidding. And by the way, A.C., and Equinox is not open currently, but A.C. still hooping at Equinox, early morning crew, still getting buckets. Well, he didn't, you know, he ran around all the high schools in the, and told everybody how he was a virgin and no one should have sex. We're all sitting and we're just like, God, we are screwed. You know, we've already got, you know, we've already, nobody likes football.
Starting point is 00:34:16 You already had the magic, then you had the magic thing, right? Yeah, you had the AIDS epidemic where everybody's like, how many guys did she kiss? Oh, she must have AIDS. It's like, oh, my God, you know, everybody was just, it was, and then everybody was, And it wasn't cool to be a football player, you know, because of Nirvana and all that. And then A.C. Green, we had all of that against us. And then A.C. Green's in the gym talking about his virginity and how he wins all the championships because he's a virgin. And all our girls were nodding. I mean, we, no wonder it was so.
Starting point is 00:34:52 That's Petrus Papadakis. That's where you learned public school in San Pedro. You're the best, man. Merry Christmas, too, and your family. Thanks so much for joining us. And he didn't come to your school? No, he didn't come to, he didn't come to, he didn't come to, he didn't cross the curtain. He did, he did not. He was, he lives down in the curtain, but he did not. And his, his message would have been kind of better received there, right? But he did, he did not. I imagine the reception. Wally Joyner? Wally George. Who's Wally George? You don't know who George is? No, I know Wally Joyner. I remember, I remember Wally's world,
Starting point is 00:35:24 right field. Alignor was Toney-Cutain and a tragic. That wasn't, you got the wrong angel, dude, wrong angel. That wasn't Tani Cattain. That was, and it was it, was it Langer? Was it Mark Langston? No, no, no. I know the Tani Kattain thing, wasn't that? Who was Tani Kattain married to? I think she beat up Wally Joyner. No, it was a different one, I think. You're going to have to look that up,
Starting point is 00:35:48 and you're going to have to look up W. Wally George. Who is the U.W. Wally Jordan? For every drunk, a saddleback, junior college student in the 80s and early 90s. On KD.O.C. I was Chuck Finley. Chuck Finley, my bad.
Starting point is 00:36:03 You're right. Another former angel, left-hander. My bad to Mark Langston. Langer, I know pretty well. it was it was it was it was Chuck Finley another former angel left hander she kicked him senseless yes spiked heel yeah spiked heel every every LA dude's night biggest nightmare right is the spiked heel no question behind the other leg of Connie katane yes yes all right we we we do have to go and and try and figure out how many FCC laws we have violated thanks for
Starting point is 00:36:31 doing this I didn't do anything I know you did that's the old Pettress Papadakus let's get you to let's get you John Goulet with the news No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. I'm glad I get to follow that. Yeah. Okay, I do have an interesting story, though.
Starting point is 00:36:49 That keeps changing every 10 minutes. Okay. So the Rockets and the NBA are reviewing a video, I should say, were reviewing a video of James Hardin, partying at a what we thought was a strip club without a mask to see if he violated COVID protocols. Now, obviously he did. I guess the only thing in question was, when was the video from? So this puts Hardin's availability for the rocket season opener tonight against the thunder in jeopardy.
Starting point is 00:37:14 So that came out this morning. Hardin put this on Instagram this morning. One thing after another, I went to show love to my home girl at her event, not a strip club, because she is becoming a boss and putting her people in a position of success, and now it's a problem. Every day it's something different. No matter how many times people try to drag my name under, you can't. The real always end up, end on top.
Starting point is 00:37:37 Okay, so he's basically admitting he went to the club, but because it's not a strip club, therefore it's not violating COVID protocols. I robbed a bank, just not that bank. That's what the, it's called. The woman being toppless or not really doesn't spread the virus any differently. It's more of the we didn't have masks on thing. Now, the interesting thing was that post that I just read no longer exists because he deleted it, probably because someone said, hey dude, you just admitted that you did something wrong. So, Shams put this out. Several Houston Rockets, including John Wall and Boogie Cousins,
Starting point is 00:38:10 possibly more, are expected to miss tonight's game because of contact tracing. Now, John Wall did not... By the way, contact tracing is going to be a great code name for years to come. Like some contract chasing with you, Ben. So we don't know if it's related to this or not. There's a report out that Hardin actually already had COVID. so this summer or something that's from our Rockets insider
Starting point is 00:38:39 Greg Toey who's the other producer of this show there's someone else on the team Ben McLemore on the team has already tested positive that's not the person so we don't really know who's playing for the rocket tonight and we don't know if Hardin is suspended or not go ahead react to all of that because I'm confused
Starting point is 00:38:56 it's a lot to digest. Too cheesy to say Houston is a problem or Houston we have problems Houston we have problems Yeah, this is a little bit This is a little bit like Apollo Was it Apollo 11? Was that the one? 13.
Starting point is 00:39:09 13, Apollo 13? 11 blew up, right? No, 11 got to the moon. 11 got to the moon. Which is the one that they had the fire on? Is that Apollo 12? Remember when they all died? They were all gone?
Starting point is 00:39:22 I believe that was before then. Before that? Okay. Anyway, this is like Apollo 13, right? We're like, nothing's working. And poor Stephen Silas is like, Hey, dudes, I just got this job. like super bright, well-respected guy,
Starting point is 00:39:36 lineage of the great Paul Silas, right? And he's like, hey, coach, what do you think of tonight's matchup? I have zero idea who's going to be on my active roster tonight. Yeah, Houston is an abject disaster. John Wall tested negative, but he's still sent home because of contact tracing. Right. They're double checking to see if the positive rocket isn't a false positive. Yeah, correct.
Starting point is 00:39:59 So not the best season opener for the rocket. who have already had kind of a rough offseason. Okay, we'll move on to a team that's kind of been associated with the Rockets as a potential landing spot for James Hardin. So as soon as Hardin said he wanted to be traded, the logical landing spot was the Sixers because his former GM, Darry, who loves Hardin and I believe once called him the greatest offensive player ever,
Starting point is 00:40:30 is running the Sixers. That, of course, would mean the end of the sixers. Ben Simmons era as the point guard in Philadelphia, but he isn't worried about the rumors. He said, when asked if he was worried, he said, no, I come in every day, take it a day at a time, ready to work, I'm with my teammates. Every day I wake up, every time I got a Sixers uniform on, I'm representing the Sixers, so my mentality never changes. I don't see how, is there a team more likely to get harder than the Sixers, given the
Starting point is 00:40:59 Mori connection? And they really don't love the way things have worked with Simmons. No, there's not. You don't bring in Darry to a team that has underachieve and go like, hey, we want to keep what we have and ride it out. No, no. And look, it's just, it's an educated guess, but it's pretty much a guess. Like, they started to kind of put the roster and Danny Green and shooters. I don't think that was built around Simmons.
Starting point is 00:41:28 I think it's built around James Hardin. And this is a lot like the AD trade, where, everyone knew he was going to the Lakers, wanted to go to the Lakers, and it was just a question of how much the Lakers would ultimately give up? That's the question here. How little will the Rockets take in return
Starting point is 00:41:46 to get James Harden off of their payroll? That feels like the point where we are right now. The reported Asking Price recently was Simmons and three firsts. The problem is that if you have John Wall, what do you do with Simmons? Those two pieces don't fit together. So maybe the Rockets thought, you know, we can work this thing out and keep,
Starting point is 00:42:08 but I don't see how those two work together at all. Well, and what is the value of three firsts if that team is healthy? They're going to be like you're picking in the 20s. I mean, that's not. I can't rebuild around that. And then the part that I don't know if everybody realized, and this is a really important part, the NBA draft is going to get younger and younger and younger. You know, I don't know whether they'll let the high school kids come straight out,
Starting point is 00:42:30 but, I mean, it's the reason that several of these NBA teams have hired recruiting gurus is because they know the high school kids better than they do, right? So several recruiting gurus from different websites and even from Fox Sports have been hired away by NBA teams because everybody knows what's coming. You're going to have to, you're guessing on the future and that makes it you draft a guy instead of two or three years before they develop. Now it's four or five years they've developed. It's a mess. But yes, I do think ultimately he ends up there. And that's John Gullet with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 00:43:07 And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lye News. Doug Peterson is grasping at straws. He wants to stay in Philadelphia. Why the Eagles should not be fooled by recent results. I'll share them with you next in The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. On Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.
Starting point is 00:43:29 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged.
Starting point is 00:43:53 Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what you're saying. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Starting point is 00:45:12 Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jek. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
Starting point is 00:45:32 I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really?
Starting point is 00:45:51 Yeah. For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple, podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hardway with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Kear Games.
Starting point is 00:46:07 And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking, Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
Starting point is 00:46:27 And we're still chasing it. We don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Starting point is 00:46:43 Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, learn the hard way. Open your free. Starting point is 00:47:02 Nothing says holiday cheer like RECTech. It's smart grill technology means precision cooking from an app on your phone while you spend time with family, friends, even watching the games. Grill it up right this holiday season with Rectec. RecTech with a queue.com. Doug Gottlieb, be in for Colin. This is the hurt. Merry Christmas to all of you. and a happy New Year as well. It's weird. It's one of those things. I feel like I'm the only person in Los Angeles that says Merry Christmas.
Starting point is 00:47:35 You know? And look, I'm Jewish. I don't know how to... But it doesn't actually bother me if you do say Merry Christmas. Like, didn't you know? His name's Gottlie, but generally Jewish descent, Jewish name? Like doesn't buy... It's just saying like, hey, man, have a good holiday season.
Starting point is 00:47:52 It's kind of it is. So I'm not offended, but also. Also, like, the lack of, and I'm going to hypothesize as to why. I think it's people's fear of offending somebody over their religious face or lack thereof, which it shouldn't be. Literally went to pick up my coffee this morning. Merry Christmas. Nothing. Crickets. Like, how is that a bad thing? Jewish guy, throwing out the olive branch. Merry Christmas. Happy holidays? Eagles have won two games in a row and Doug Peterson
Starting point is 00:48:26 Sorry, they lost the... They didn't beat the cards. They look good. Look better with Jalen Hertz, my mistake. And by the way, the loss of the Cardinals who can't beat anybody. But... Look, Jalen Hertz looked good this past game. They looked very good.
Starting point is 00:48:43 He did not... They won against the Saints, and he looked decent against the Saints, where they had, you know, no real... No tape on him. him outside of Oklahoma tape. Ironically, apparently, the Eagles basically ran a poor version of of Oklahoma's offense to limited success, enough to where they beat the Saints. Some of it was Tason Hill, Tason Hill bad turnover. But some of it was that Jalen Hertz running the football was
Starting point is 00:49:06 dynamic. And the team had better energy. Like, look, I think it's reasonable to think that Carson Wentz and his lack of confidence has negative energy on the team. There's a, He has remember the name Pete Carill. Pete Carill is a longtime famous coach at Princeton. And he used to tell people you want to be a light bulb. You want to light up every room. Like his favorite players were light bulbs. And I do think it's possible that Carson Wentz is just not a light bulb.
Starting point is 00:49:38 And most quarterbacks are. Most are guys that guys are like, I don't even, have you ever sat down and talked to a NFL quarterback? Or listen to them when they're on with me or with Colin? You'd want to vote for the guy. You'd want the guy to date your daughter, right? Like, that's how well-regarded most of them are. They're guys that take over the room. They just are.
Starting point is 00:50:01 And it's possible that Carson Wentz isn't that guy. But this idea that the limited success of an offense, which he doesn't really know, and a quarterback where no one really thinks he's the long-term solution, and Doug Peterson should stay in Philadelphia, when he clearly and obviously mishandled everything, with Carson Wentz? Yeah, I don't see it.
Starting point is 00:50:24 I don't. We have seen this before. We've seen Vince Young win in his rookie year. We've seen RG3 win in his rookie year. We've seen the best ever at running this style of offense is Lamar Jackson. They're not a lot to make the playoffs. They've never won a playoff game. And Lamar was the MVP of the league.
Starting point is 00:50:43 This offense takes the league by storm, and then the league storms back. To me, if I'm the Eagles, if I really believed in Wentz, then Peterson's the one who's got to go. Coming up next, the Clippers beat the Lakers, but does it matter? I'll tell you, I'm Doug Gottlieb. This is The Hurd. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy,
Starting point is 00:51:08 not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman helped make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and Hempherson. writer Street or Sidell help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform?
Starting point is 00:51:25 We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. Starting point is 00:51:41 games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential.
