This is an I-Heart podcast.
Guaranteed Human.
Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite.
Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman
help make you funnier.
This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel,
help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Where does your group perform?
We do some retirement homes.
Those people are starving for banter.
Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel
and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's
superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
On the Look Back at it podcast.
From 1979, that was a big moment for me.
84 was big to me.
I'm Sam J.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it.
With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors.
Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s.
84 was a wild year.
It was a wild year.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
A win is a win.

I don't care what you're saying.
Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th.

Thanks so much.
I'm Doug Gottlieb filling in for Colin Cowherd.
I want to do a segment at some point on my show or Colin's show called That's what I call BS.
You guys ever played the card game BS?
You guys are looking to me like I'm crazy.
No?
It's a very simple card game and fun to play with the kids.
Of course, you have to say, or they have to be of 80.
to know what BS means, right?
He hasn't ever played it?
John Gulee, you're from Connecticut.
Spades, Hearts, Yucer.
What was the card game
that groups played together?
We just played setback.
Play what?
Setback.
What is that?
I really don't know.
It's tough to just...
It's a card game
that it's designed to play with four people
and playing teams.
Okay, so is it...
We'll have to show me during a break
or maybe Google and
Tuy, you're
Texas guy. Midwest is
Uker. It's like the only place. There's hearts,
there's spades, there's Uker. Uker.
Yucre is mostly Midwest. What about
Texas, Tewy? What are they
play in Texas? Spades? No, it's a lot of
Texas hold on poker. I actually
wasn't a card guy. I mean, I played
war. Does that count? No.
It does not.
That does not.
There's
AC Ducey or between the sheets or
high, low, whatever. I have some great college stories.
about that. That's the simplest game.
One next to war, the simplest game.
But
BS is a good card game.
It's also great when spoken
by a two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback.
I want to get to the NBA in a second, but I saw
this from Marka Koboli
who covers the Pittsburgh
Steelers for the athletic.
Ben Rothesberger said he called
a player's only meeting, but it had
nothing to do with the three-game losing streak.
That had everything to do with veterans,
getting veterans to talk to the younger
players. Made sure to reiterate, it had nothing to do with the losing street.
Yes, you know where you won't see a players-only meeting?
Kansas City, right?
Because they're not losing.
I've never seen a players...
Guys, things you don't see.
People who get a second opinion after good news,
Mr. Gottlie, you don't have cancer.
Sorry, Doc, I'm going to need a second opinion.
People don't do that.
They only get a second opinion on bad news.
And players-only meetings only occur when losing happens.
Speaking of losing,
last night the Golden State Warriors got pummeled by the Brooklyn Nets,
which led us to this unbelievable, really truth-telling interview
between Charles Barkley and Kevin Durant.
Talk about you coming back for the playoffs last year.
So you really just been working on your game,
trying to get back your timing and condition
and really, to be honest, correct?
Yeah.
In fairness to KD,
there wasn't really a question asked, right?
It wasn't a, what have you been doing to get?
But everybody kind of knows the deal there, right?
Leads you into some sort of answer and you just talk
unless you're Kevin Durant and you're ready to go.
Media obligation fulfilled.
Media obligation fulfilled.
But statement made.
not just by your final score, but also by how you handled the TNT guys.
And maybe Barclay. Maybe Barclay said Barclay said what everybody thinks about Kyrie Irving,
which is, hey, dude, you don't have to be the smartest guy in every room.
But man, can he play basketball?
Man, can he play basketball?
All right, speaking of basketball, Clippers beat the Lakers.
Clippers hopped out to a 22-point lead in the first quarter,
where Lakers had their championship ring ceremony hangover.
How great was this ceremony?
Can I give you a couple of ceremony takeaways?
Jeannie Bus is 59?
Get out of here.
59?
No way.
No way.
Anybody who talks crap on L.A.
Just go, hey, Jeannie Buses 59.
You're like, really?
Really?
Yep.
I love L.A.
I love Rob Polinka getting the ring and doing the 2-4 for Kobe Bryant.
Do you guys see that one?
and the addition of you don't use children or animals as props generally,
but between Jared Dudley's kids and Marquif Morris' kid,
yelling and screaming, that was amazing.
Rob Polinka's family.
Who else?
LeBron James' kids.
Like all of the kids.
Damn cute.
That was a good ring.
I don't usually watch ring ceremony.
That was a good one.
That was a good one.
The Lakers not so much.
They cut the 22-point lead by the half.
It was a whole new game and it didn't look great.
And any Laker fan or NBA fan can sit there and go like,
hey man, Lakers just got done playing like a week ago in the bubble.
The game didn't matter to them.
It matters to the Clippers.
And the Clippers played like it matters and finished the game like it matters.
And congratulations to the Clippers, the champions of nothing.
they can be the two-time champion of the first game of the season.
You don't get rings for it. You don't get a banner for it.
Clippers don't. It would be very Clippers or Indianapolis Colts to hang a banner,
beat the Lakers' first game of two consecutive seasons.
But while it's super easy to clown on the Clippers,
the reality is the bubble wasn't good for them.
The reality was they didn't have great chemistry.
They were put together for a traditional NBA season to,
slowly progress and have their kind of get their stuff together.
And as bad as we perceive it, like we perceive,
when I say the Clippers season last year,
most people would say abject disaster, right?
Coach gets fired.
Star player gets laughed at because, you know,
he's complaining about how he's used.
Other players get jettisoned in postseason moves, right?
Like your sixth man of the year moves across the hallway,
to play for the Lakers.
You would say abject, but was it really?
They got to the conference semifinals, had a three games to one lead, led by, I think,
over 20 points in both games five and six in, at some point in time, in the second half
of close-out game.
They didn't close out.
Their chemistry wasn't good, but for a first season together, that start, stop, start,
stopped, and they had to navigate Paul George coming off dual shoulder surgery and Kauai
Leonard's minute restrictions.
Like, they weren't that far off.
And had they played the Lakers, they were a tough matchup for the Lakers.
Everything that could have gone right for the Lakers went right for the Lakers.
They didn't have to play the Clippers.
They didn't have to play the Bucks when they're in the middle of their series,
I think against Portland, right?
They were on fumes, on fumes.
Between game four and game five, when they're taken on Portland,
they're on fumes.
Their chemistry was starting.
starting to have some fissures. And then because of the protest of what happened in
Kenosha, Wisconsin, they got extra, like three days, extra was five days in between games.
They got a little rested. Then their family showed up. Then they got the rockets who,
you know, like Russell Westbrook poked the bear after beating them in game one,
combined with new energy, family showing up. And then they beat the rockets who didn't
match up well with the Lakers. And now the Clippers lose and the Bucks lose. And then
And then they sit there and go, just like the Indians in Major League, what if we win the whole effing thing, right?
I watched last night and the Clippers look like they were better and better coached offensively.
I like their additions, maybe more than I like the Laker.
Like, I like the idea of Marcosol, but man, I didn't like what I saw from 35-year-old Marcosol.
He looked like 35 going on 45.
LeBron looked fine.
He's dunking on dudes.
And he looks like, you know, he's LeBron.
but the
I don't know about the Dennis Schrooter
thing, right? Like there's a reason
he was available and he's been available
so many times. I don't know.
I get it.
They won last year with bad shooting.
They won with Danny Green, who was
washed, right? They won
essentially without a point guard and thank
God that, you know, playoff Rondo
showed up at opportune times
in the finals
and in the conference finals.
Like I, I, they won.
and they earned it, but they didn't have to play the Clippers,
they didn't have to play the Bucks,
and they don't shoot the ball well.
And on paper, their additions look great,
but so does everybody else's.
And in practice, Clippers look good.
I get it. First game of the year,
not going to go overboard.
But LeBron didn't win in his first year in L.A.,
didn't win in his first year in Miami.
Didn't win his first year in Cleveland.
Wouldn't be crazy if the Clippers, year two, figure it all out.
All right, coming up next, Darius Butler's going to join us.
Former Pat's and Colts defensive back.
I want to get his sense of, is this, in fact, the greatest coaching job?
The greatest coaching job that Bill Belichick has ever done on a team that won't make the playoffs.
We'll discuss next.
I'm Doug Gottlieb. This is The Hurt.

Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs?
Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people.
I know what you're thinking.
What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim?
Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast.
I'm Sam Jek.
And I'm Alex English.
Each episode, we pick a here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we
survived it, including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill, waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so you all know.
I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack,
so I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now, so.
Thank you finishing that sentence.
Yes, I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
And for me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so rapid.
up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing and we're still
chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch life becomes about
wins and losses Steve Burns Dustin Ross because you find it important to be a good person while you

Doug Gottlieb in for calling.
This is The Hurd, Fox Sports Radio, the iHeartRadio app.
Got a lot to get to still.
Great best for last.
I mean, outstanding best for last.
Very excited about it.
Plus, and maybe I'll throw this one at Derius Butler.
I have a working kind of hypotheses.
And Darius Butler joins us.
He's a former Patriots and Colts defensive back.
He's a co-host of the Man to Man podcast.
He joins us now on the herd.
Darius, I watch the downfall of the Steelers offense, right?
And what's missing?
A running game hasn't really, I know James Conner's rookie season was outstanding,
but it hasn't really been the same since Lavian Bell held out.
Then I watch a big Ben.
And look, he's got young wide receivers with a ton of drops.
and Ben seems, frankly, over the hill.
I look at the Packers, and, you know, Aaron Jones signs with Drew Rosenhaus,
meaning he wants to get paid this off season, right?
Nobody signs with Drew thinking about hometown discount.
And so that's why they draft A.J. Dillon.
And then the downfall of Big Ben and some of these older quarterbacks,
that's why they get Jordan Love for the future.
And, oh, yeah, by the way, the young wide receivers in Pittsburgh,
a lot of drops early in their career.
that's why you're better off
stabilizing your future than you are
linking up to a wide receiver.
I think in addition to the wins and losses this year,
does Green Bay look smarter based
upon what's taking place in Pittsburgh?
I wouldn't really connect it to, honestly.
Every team has their own, you know,
different situation and how they're built.
You know, I expected Big Ben to come back
and obviously look much, but I can't put it all on the receivers
because when I'm watching it, you know,
he doesn't look like he's playing, you know, up to the level that you would expect.
And, you know, part of that is not having a good running game.
That's very important, especially for an aging quarterback.
You know, all these aging quarterbacks that you see around the league,
whether there's Phillip Rivers down in Indy or Tom in Tampa or Breeze in New Orleans,
you have that back feel kind of solidified.
So I think that's what you really need.
I don't even think A-Rod is close to falling off.
Great.
With his level of play.
And I think that that pick, you know, with Jordan Lover,
was, you know, insurance. You know, he has had some short seasons in our recent years, so
it's more so insurance, and the best time to really draft the quarterback is when you take,
you don't need one. You see what's going on to Philly right now. So I think it's all situational,
but I think Green Bay should do everything they can do in their power to keep Aaron Jones.
Doug Allieman for Colin, this is the Hurdarius Butler, our guest. Of course, an outstanding
defensive back with the Patriots and the Colts. Before we get to Tom and what he's doing in Tampa,
am I crazy to think that Belichick
considering you had eight guys opt out
got eight guys opt out right
didn't have an offseason with his quarterback
with Cam Newton
hadn't had Edelman
hadn't had you know
Stefan Gilmore got hurt like
and they're still
about 500
is it possible this is the best coaching job
he's ever done?
Oh man I know I wouldn't say that
man because
you know even with all those things you lynch it
I still feel like you know
they fell short.
And, you know, they looked like they were going to be off.
They looked like there would be a tough game every week of how they started the season
before Cam got COVID.
I think after that, that's when everything kind of changed for some reason.
But I can't say that this is one of his best jobs, maybe that 11 and 5 year when Brady went out,
will be up there, even starting out, you know, those first four games without Brady.
But that was a –
Darius, that was a 16-0 team that went 11-5.
Cam Newton can't throw a football.
I don't know if COVID affects your shoulder.
He can't throw a football.
He won't be in the NFL anymore after this year because he just,
there's something wrong with his shoulder he can't throw.
No, he'll definitely still be in the NFL.
I think that's kind of outlandish.
As what?
As what?
He may not, he may not be a starter.
But I think he's definitely going to be in the NFL for the next few years.
He's still a good player.
I definitely think, I don't think that shoulder is fully healthy.
But like I said, I've seen too many games where, you know, you saw a glimpse,
you saw flashes, very short in all season, and look at who's around him.
You know, no disrespect to those guys, but, you know, they're not NFL caliber of weapons
who are creating separation consistently, making tough catches, you know, having matchups.
That's where all these quarterbacks have.
And then, you know, all the guys opting out.
So I don't think, you know, we've seen a fair shake for Cam.
And I think that would be crazy to say that he won't be in the NFL beyond this year.
Maybe not a starter.
Maybe not.
Do you think, so you think Cam is going to, like, he has five touchdowns and 10 interceptions
in 13 games.
Like, he can't, like, he just, he can't throw the ball.
And this is on, do you think he's going to take a minimum deal somewhere else to be
somebody's backup?
I don't see him being, I don't see him in a backup, but I also don't see Cam Newton
just being out of the league next year.
I just don't see it.
Maybe you call me crazy.
We'll revisit this a year from now.
But I don't see that being even close to a possibility.
Darius Butler joining us, former Patriots and Colts defensive back.
Speaking of the Colts, you mentioned Philip Rivers and his arm and his age.
Some of that they've been able to hide.
Some of that.
He's played well in spots recently.
Is he good enough?
Because that defense is really, really good.
Is he good enough at this stage in his career to put them in the conversation with the Chiefs in the AFC?
Oh, in that conversation.
That's tough, man.
You know, there have been some ups and downs.
They haven't been as consistent as you would like to see them.
But the offense is hitting their stride.
And more importantly, Jonathan Taylor is hitting his stride.
You know, he kind of struggled.
I think he struggled with maybe vision or speed the game or something early.
He just wasn't seeing it.
But now he is.
They're getting healthy up front with Costanzo and Kelly been back in there consistently.
And they can, T. Y. Hilton is getting involved.
Pascals coming along.
You got guys on offense who are, you know, showing up weekend.
week out. If they have that, like you mentioned earlier, that defense is a championship
caliber defense. So if Philip can, you know, can keep doing what he's been doing in that
offense, I think they have a chance against anybody in the league. We have breaking news for you,
Darius. This is big. Ju-Jew Smith-Schuster told reporters, for the betterment of myself and my
teammates, I'm going to stop dancing on logos. All right, there we go. Pittsburgh's
problems all solved.
right they're back to winning now right that's it was just it was the dancing in the logo
you know everything's an issue when you're losing everything and anything and it definitely
doesn't hurt it doesn't help when you're losing so um you know obviously winning cures
everything you've covered sports for a while you know how that goes so i'm not going to
point fingers to anything but um like joe hayton said i believe yesterday you know him
dancing on the logos who are the least of their worries we talked about their worries
um early on the offensive side of the ball and they're missing two
studs on defense that, you know,
it's not, you know, and
if the NFL, so it's next guy up, you trust everybody
in the locker room, but you're missing Dupree,
missing Bush, no excuses,
but, um, no, that's not, that I do think,
I do think we have a tendency to like, like, look,
Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh is built
upon their pass rush, and obviously
you lose one side of that, right? And
he's been awesome, and then they're
linebackers. I mean, that, that front seven
has been amazing. You lose two
key pieces. You're not going to be the same
team. I do think we're hyper-focused
on the,
offense, but the defense without those two for the rest of the season.
Bud Dupree was having a great year opposite to TJ.
Great year.
Great year.
And Devin Bush is a good player.
You lose both of them.
You're a different football team.
1,000 percent.
Unless you have a guy at like the quarterback position that can really just elevate everyone's
level of player around them and just the team in general, you're going to be in trouble.
And we're not seeing that from Big Ben right now.
So they definitely got some issues, man.
for a team to start off 11 and 0, and then the questions that are surrounding them now,
I don't think I've ever seen, I guess, a drop off like this ever.
My parents saw as my mom always told me, don't play with your food.
It feels like the Chiefs are playing with their food, right?
Like they just kind of toy with their, and then like, all right, let me see when I need to hit Tyreek.
You'll deep or have a long drive or figure that thing out.
And last year, they all three games in the playoffs in the Super Bowl, they came from behind and won.
Are they playing with fire, though?
That's a good analogy, actually.
Who am I used that?
Well, man, that's a good one.
It's all yours.
I didn't invent it.
I didn't invent it.
Go ahead.
That's kind of what it looks like, man.
And the more you watch them, it's like you see the record and they're winning ball games.
And ultimately, that's what it's about.
Can you win ball games consistently?
And they find ways to do that pretty much every week.
But like you said, when they're, you know, severely outmatching teams and you just expect them to dominate.
Like, I felt like even though the score was a lot closer, it wasn't the same.
I felt like they should have dominated that game.
with how Drew Brees started off, and they didn't.
And you've seen that happen, you know, Raiders games and the Dolphys games,
just games throughout the year where it's like, huh, can this team kind of, it's tough to repeat.
Everybody knows it's tough to repeat.
You know, you bring back a big, you know, chunk of that core.
But, you know, I'm not, it's not as big as a gap as I thought coming into the year,
you know, going into the playoffs between the Chief and everybody else.
Darius Butler joining us in the herd.
I'm Doug Gottliebilling in for Colin.
All right, let's get to Brady, a guy you know so well, the guy the league knows so well.
I always wondered, always wondered what it would look like if you put Brady with a coach
who believes kind of the opposite in terms philosophically offensively, right?
Like Brady, and you tell me because you actually played against and with him,
which is I was always under the impression.
The strength of Brady is his ability to know what you're in,
he gets rid of the ball so quickly.
it doesn't, everybody's like, well, you get him off your spot.
You can't get to him quick enough to get him off his spot.
And he gets rid of it so quick on this underneath that's option routes
that he nullifies your pass rush and he's deadly accurate.
That's not how Ariens has played.
And it's been kind of rocky.
Some of it's the offseason.
Some of it's the personnel.
Some of it's the play calling.
What do you think of Ariens and Brady and how that marriage has evolved to this point in season?
I honestly expected a lot more out of it.
Honestly, I know he's playing well and he's putting up numbers,
but I expected that offense to be able with those weapons and Brady,
you know, even though he's 43, you know, I expected almost record numbers this year
with the weapons that he had around him.
But they're playing good but not consistent enough.
It's weird.
With the mine-like areas and Brady coming together at this point in their careers,
I thought it would just be, man, I thought it would blow out.
vision out. But anyway,
so why haven't they?
You know,
the strength of Brady, like you said, to me,
his biggest strength is identifying
and creating matchups, like creating
bad matchup problems, and then just
attacking those as much as possible.
And then, you know, he picks and chooses a shot.
And he controls, he does probably
the best job ever of controlling the tempo
of the game, whether snap counts,
pre-snaps, motions, all the different
things that help identify the defense,
help make forces defenders to show their hands.
And you're not seeing a bunch of that in Tampa Bay.
I thought they would adapt a lot more of that to their system.
You're not seeing you see a lot less of it.
He's just dropping back, running these, you know, down-the-field concepts.
That's not, like you said, we've never seen this all these years.
So it's hard for, you know, Tiger changes stripes at this point.
So it's tough.
I think that's what it is.
But, you know, it's hard to kind of count or bet against Brady going into the playoffs
and just figuring it out and dialing in what, what's really worth.
working. But I have my concerns
that defense as well. He just gave up
350-something yards to the
Falcons with no
Julio Jones on the field and no real
running games. So, you know, it's
some pretty high-powered quarterbacks in the
NFC. So that would be my concern
more so than the offense going to
the playoffs. I want to ask you about the Eagles.
Darius Butler joining us in the herd, Doug Gottliebilling in. I want to ask you
about the Eagles. Without any
question, there's new energy with Jalen
Hertz at quarterback. They're
contractually, and it's bad with Carson Wence, and now he's, he don't want to be, I don't
blame me, I don't want to be a backup, especially at the money that he's making, nor does
anybody want to have a $30 plus million backup quarterback.
Yeah.
Okay, but, but what, the way Jalen Hertz is playing, we've seen guys have limited success
before, but then eventually the league kind of catches up to you.
If you're in charge in Philadelphia, do you rehab Wenz, or do you bite the bullet, you take
that massive cap hit and you move on?
I think it's too late.
I think the damage is irreversible at this point with Wint.
And I think, you know, most of it was mental with them.
And that's not a knock on really, you know, either side, the Eagles or Wint.
But, you know, you got to look at, you know, a lot of people just look at athletes as athletes.
You know, you have to look at them as kind of people first.
And I do.
And, you know, Wentz coming from North Dakota and going to Philly, like, that's a huge, huge transition.
And when you're playing well, like I said, winnings, everything's different.
But when you're losing and things are kind of crumbling around you,
can you elevate the people around you, the organization around you,
or do you kind of crumbled?
And I think he kind of crumbled.
And once Fo's won in a Super Bowl got statute,
then you draft, you know, Hertz in the second round,
which I think, once again, was a good pick at the time.
And, you know, he's coming in and playing how he's playing.
I think, you know, at this point is Hertz's team.
And if you look at his history, he's always kind of been mature.
Jailen Hertz, you know, mature kind of beyond his years,
It's kind of stoic.
You know, no moment or situation is too big for him.
Played for two great organizations in college.
And so I think he's going to handle the world.
If I'm looking at history, I'm looking at how he's played out of the gate.
I was howling coming out.
And I was how he getting started.
It was time for Wintz to be benched.
I think he still has a future in his league.
I think the best spot would be for an indie for him.
Yeah.
Get back with a guy who you had your most success with.
Same thing that happened, by the way, with Philip Rivers, right?
he got back because Frank Wright at one point in time
was his play caller with the Chargers.
Hey, Darius, listen, have a Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas, health and safety
to all your family and friends.
And thanks so much for joining us.
Look forward to the next Man and Man podcast.
Thank you.
My happy holidays.
Thanks for having me.
All right, Darias Butler.
He's a great player.
He's got a good podcast called Man to Man.
He's joined us in the Hurd.
Let's get you to John Goulet with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the Herdline News.
So speaking of Bill Belichick
He is not used to being asked for the past 20 years
Who is starting quarterback is going to be
Kind of had one for that stretch
So he was asked once again this week
If maybe Jared Stidham would get a start over Cam
And he was not having any of that
Would this be in the first practice of the week
And you guys going through your meetings the last couple days
We're sicking with Cam at quarterback?
We're not answering that question.
every day. I've been through this for a month.
How about if I let you know if we're going to make a change?
So every Patriots writer and Draft Scout all summer was telling us how amazing Jared Stidham was,
and he was going to be the next genius pick under Belichick.
What is, to your point, Cam looks done.
Cam can't throw a football.
Listen, this is really important, okay?
And Colin and I know that we know similar people in the NFL.
and the whole thing with Cam
wasn't over the scars
like why is he wearing a scarf
wasn't over the persona
it wasn't even as much about the
inaccuracy he's never been a high
percentage door with the exception when he was with
Norvin Scott Turner
for a little bit in Carolina
but like look all the handwriting was on the wall
Ron Rivera
Ron Rivera brought in his back
traded for his backup in Carolina
okay Brandon Bean
and
and Sean McDermott.
Do you know where they were before they were in Buffalo?
Carolina.
Okay.
They needed a backup quarterback.
Cam Newton could have been free to them,
basically, a million dollars.
No interest.
Okay?
The Chargers, no interest.
Now these teams, they needed a quarterback.
The Colts, no interest.
And everyone said the same thing.
It was like, it was a little bit of,
could he accept being a backup?
But there's a lot of, like,
I didn't like how he threw the ball
before he got hurt because of the foot last time.
since he came off shoulder surgery, he hasn't done the ball well.
And he's been worse, not better.
He can't throw.
It's over.
Now, I will give him credit that everyone in the NFL I've talked to is talking about, like, look, that guy has some supreme character.
They're running him.
He's basically running single wing.
So they're running.
They're running single wing.
They're running him a ton.
He's taking a beating.
Clearly playing through injury.
Playing through injury.
Like, he's a tough, you know what?
Like, he's a tough ombre.
And he is, and he's laughed.
and smiled and called out his own poor performances.
He's been awesome.
This is not a function of anything as a human being in terms of intangibles.
It's about tangibles.
To play the position, you have to throw the football,
and hopefully within a window where the guy can catch it.
He can do neither.
So why are they playing sit-im?
Well, I guess the question is, for the Patriots perspective,
why keep playing camp?
He's not going to be your quarterback next year.
You're pretty sure of that, right?
Right.
So what am I doing?
like why not throw Stidham out there just to see what he is?
I don't know.
Like I don't think Stidim's the answer.
I didn't buy any of that all summer that he, I don't know, but they wasn't very good.
They could end up eight and eight with this roster.
Yeah, it's an amazing coaching, which means you're not going to get a high draft pick.
So you're not really trying to lose or win.
Like you're not, like, why not just see, hey, Stidham worth something?
Or do we need to go get an established veteran?
I just don't, I don't get why you're, you continue to throw Cam out there.
Like you said, it looks like a struggle to get the ball.
from point A to point B.
It's an educated guess, but I think you will see Stidham if it gets,
if Cam is shaky this week, I think it's more a function of.
I don't want to make the change.
But Cam has handled all this stuff really, really well, really well.
And I think that's what it's a function of.
I think Stidham starts against the Jets.
There's no question.
Yeah, the conspiracy that we had on the show before the Jets won was,
do they throw Stidham out there against,
does Belichick throw Stim out there against the Jets to lose
so that the Jets don't get Trevor Lawrence kind of a moot point?
If he has Cam Newton throw the ball 50 times, then he's trying to lose.
Okay.
Sticking with a former Patriot story, Tony Dungey had said in the past that Tom Brady was the sixth toughest quarterback he ever had to face.
On Shannon Sharpe's podcast, he asked him about that.
Any reiterated list in Payton's this guy is always going to be ahead of everybody.
And that guys like Rogers, Elway, and Steve Young were ahead of Brady because they could move.
Tom Brady, who's become an expert at Twitter, responded quickly.
with a picture of the banner, the Coltang,
that said Colts 2014 AFC finalist.
So, listen, was Dungee the coach in 2014?
No.
Does that make it any less funny?
No.
It's fantastic.
It's amazing.
So clearly you are in favor of that response.
Brady, by the way, was 5 and 3 against Dungey as the Colts head coach
and 2 in the playoffs.
Do you buy that Dungey really has Brady 6?
Yes.
Why is that?
I think we forget how awesome John Elway was.
Yeah.
Like John Elway went to, people forget like, look, they shouldn't have gone to those Super Bowls when they beat the Browns.
One was on the drive.
Remember, it was on the road.
Cleveland was a better team.
It's just incredible drive.
The other one.
Ernest Biner was going into the end zone and dropped the ball at the one yard line.
Otherwise, Cleveland goes to a Super Bowl.
And the reason that the Broncos got beaten so badly was because Elway lifted them to a level.
The team wasn't really that good.
He was just that good.
Aaron Rogers is.
that good. Aaron Rage is better.
Now, Tom Brady's an incredible leader,
and he's been steady and had great performance.
And if anything, Tom Brady, like, here's the
crazy part about it. We
miss the greatest window of Brady's
success. Remember, 50 touchdown pass
16 on the regular season, but he got hurt
and didn't play the next year.
And then when he came back, nobody's the same their first
year back. Those were the Randy Moss teams.
Those are the dominant teams.
And we didn't get a Super Bowl win out
of those. I do
think, I think that's what he believes.
It's just like I really believe that NBA GMs don't think LeBron is the best end-of-game shot taker or maker.
Regardless of how many volumes of shots, that's how they evaluate.
That's what they really believe.
And finally, Panthers owner David Tepper, he's been pretty aggressive since he bought the team.
He hired Matt Ruhle, gave him a seven-year deal whenever everyone thought he was going to the Giants,
wouldn't let him out of the building without a contract.
He fired his GM this week.
Marty Henry?
Yes.
And at the pressur, he was asked about the Panthers quarterback situation.
He said, quote,
Unless you have that guy for sure that gets you to playoffs and Super Bowls,
you have to keep reevaluating that because that's the only thing that matters is Super Bowls.
Now, that's interesting.
I don't think anyone thinks Petty Bridgewater's the long-term answer,
but he's been okay.
He's certainly a bridge.
It's interesting because they have the fourth pick.
So the question is going to be,
are we going to see a bunch of quarterbacks go early?
Yes.
Or are they the team that goes to the Jets and goes,
hey, we know you don't love Fields as much.
will come up to two to get fields.
And fields, of course, from, you know, close enough to Carolina.
But also you would assume Matt Rule might want a new, he's a college guy.
You know, Joe Brady obviously just had success in college.
He might go, hey, let's get a college kid.
But Joe Brady also, it's a Saints deal.
They want an accurate thrower.
I'm not sure.
I'm not, you know, like, did you watch Ohio State play this weekend?
I was texting with some NFL buddies.
I did.
He hasn't looked good since very early on.
the season. And it's so hard to tell because
at Ohio State, those guys are wide open.
It's wide open.
It's like a talent, most time when they're, and they're wide
open, you know, lots of
people can look good there. So it's really hard
to tell what he's going to look like.
And I'm not sure if he's a progressive
now, on the other hand, if you see talent
in a guy and you go like, we got Teddy Bridgewater, he can
sit for a year or two. And eventually
we'll be able to move on. Somebody gets hurt
and he's a quarterback. We trade Teddy is the greatest.
He's only making $19 million a year
in an era where the top quarterback
going to be making 40 by next year.
I don't think that's crazy.
So, no, your strategy is not wrong.
It's really hard to get a true read on Teddy and the offense,
considering they haven't had Christian McCaffrey half the season.
And that's their entire offense is built around Christian McCaffrey.
And that's John Gle with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Lye News.
My favorite set of moments from watching a lot of television last night.
And I watch college basketball.
I watch NBA basketball.
was the ring ceremony.
And I was thinking,
like this ring ceremony thing
where you have the kids
and the families
introduce the players, right?
And you have, like,
you had more time for Jeannie Bus to talk
and you had a chance
to really kind of listen
and take it all in.
Like, this could be a good thing.
So, for our best for last,
we have compiled a list
of the 10
best things to come out of
COVID-19, if you will.
COVID-19 is a terrible thing,
but there have been some silver linings
in sports and in life.
We'll share them with you next in the herd.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd
weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.
Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal,
but encouraged. It's the enhanced games.
Some call it grotesque. Others say it's
unleashing human potential. Either way,
the podcast Superhuman documented it all,
embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.
Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

A win is a win.
A win is a win.
I don't care which I'm saying.
Yep, that's me.
Cliver Taylor the 4th.
You might have seen the skits, the reactions,
my journey from basketball to college football
or my career in sports media.
Well, somewhere along the way,
this platform became bigger than I ever imagined.
And now I'm bringing all of that excitement
to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show.
This is a place for raw,
unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes,
creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard,
but celebrated.
One week, I'll take you behind the scenes
of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment,
and the next we'll talk about life, mental health,
purpose, and even music.
The Clifford Show,

at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap
Little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't
like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do
a little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm
Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of
how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s.
To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day,
but just so you all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode.
where we've discussed crack.
So I'm starting to see that there's a through line.
We also have AIDS on the table right now.
Thank you for finishing that sentence.
Yes.
I don't think there's a more important year for black people.
Really?
Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the
thing.
And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns,
Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth,
or are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

Doug Gottlieb in for Colin. This is The Herd. Did you guys watch the ring ceremony last night?
Couple of things I took away. I loved it. I loved it. This was LeBron James getting introduced by his family.
Brian James, Mom, and I'm here with his uncle team and his uncle coach.
What's up everybody?
This is Bryce, and I'm going to be presenting my dad, LeBron James, his 2020 championship ring.
We're here to pretend a bond with a 2020 championship.
Congratulations, Captain.
You're proud of you.
You're married you.
Congratulations, Dad.
I'm really proud of you all the hard work you put in.
Congratulations.
Oh, my gosh.
Cuteness and sweetness overload.
Should be pointed out that one of his uncles, I was a coach.
Coach, right? One of his uncle said,
congratulations lefty. Do you guys know LeBron
James is left-handed? Like Russell, Westbrook,
left-handed, LeBron James, left-handed.
They shoot the basketball right-handed.
Much like Ben Simmons's
right-handed, shoots the basketball
left-handed, except when he drives, then everything's
right-handed. It's very confused. But
LeBron James is, in fact, the lefty. That's why
one of his uncles said,
congratulations, lefty.
Let's get to the best for last.
It's almost the end of the show, but that doesn't mean
we're phoning it in. Nope. We
grind to the very last segment.
It's time for best for last.
All right, let's get to the best for last.
And I put the ring ceremony as the, hey, this is really cool.
It should happen even when fans return to Staples Center, right?
So what if we gave you the 10 other good things, great things, that have come from this
crazy time of quarantine COVID-19?
There's all kinds of bad parts.
there are some good parts. Let's get to number 10.
Mobile ordering is no longer rude.
Now, here's what I mean.
If you're a coffee person, and I'm a coffee person,
wherever you go, that's supposed to be your third place, right?
Home, work, coffee place.
And it always seemed a little bit rude, mobile order guy, right?
They just come in, hat down.
I'm here for Doug, pickup, right?
You might as well be an Uber driver, for Uber Eats or whatever, for DoorDash.
There's no relationship there.
Part of it is you walk in and it's like Norman Cheers.
Doug!
Hold on there, Doug.
I'll fix you up your cup of hot Joe.
And then you sit down and you're talking and you know everybody.
Well, those days are over, right?
But that was supposed mobile ordering actually is not a rude thing anymore.
It's a necessity.
That's kind of a good thing.
Number nine.
Family time.
Family time.
Right?
What are you doing for New Year's?
Nothing.
I can't go anywhere.
things open. Nobody's having family and friends over. That's not all bad. Like, you actually know
your kids and their teachers and their schools. Why? Well, because they're taking their schools
inside your homes. But family time is a definite bonus. Number eight. Golf is booming. Not
just Tiger and Charlie Woods. Like, I guess I shouldn't have any low expectations. He's the son of
the greatest golfer of my lifetime. But how cool was Charlie Woods?
striping a golf ball, time and again
looking just like his dad with a club tour.
But golf courses are packed.
Golf companies are out of clubs,
out of clubs,
and I am fresh out of balls.
Golf balls, golf balls,
fresh out of golf balls.
Why? Golf is going crazy right now.
Number seven.
No traffic, right?
Well, nobody's working.
Nobody no traffic.
Not all that bad.
Number six.
Dogs love this stuff.
What? You're locked down again? That means
the kids are.
always home, the parents are always home, and dogs are much, much happy.
Our mental health, not great. Dogs mental health? Outstanding.
Number five. You ever had that? I can do my work from home. I don't need to come in.
That's no longer an argument to have with your boss. Now you're actually proving it to them.
You can be, there are as downside, right? You do need to get out and whatever, but I mean,
I wouldn't want to own, you know, commercial real estate these days, but working from home,
good luck getting guys to come back into work.
Number four.
It sped up the whole streaming takeover.
Did anybody have HBO Max before, like a month ago?
Maybe if you're like, Thrones is coming out.
Thrones.
Thrones.
Outside of Thrones guy.
And Thrones guy, you're a little bit like CrossFit guy.
Like, I get it.
You like Thrones.
You don't have to use a Thrones reference in anything you say.
I haven't actually seen an episode.
I've seen one.
Winter is coming.
That's what I've seen.
That one.
But this whole thing, like movie.
theaters were kind of getting to be obsolete anyway.
Now they're additionally obsolete
because you have that home theater
system and you can stream those first run
movies right in your house. Number three.
Honestly,
are you going to miss your uncle
Jimmy or your uncle Phil
or your creepy Uncle Carl
at family gatherings?
I love Thanksgiving.
Christmas time, you know,
a chance to get together.
But, you know, you get their holiday card
and you can FaceTime them and
that's that's kind of good
number two
reduced carbon emissions
I mean really
I mean no traffic
nobody driving
skies are cleaner
right
number one
and the number one thing
that has
it's a silver lining is
it is not only now
legal in many states
but totally socially acceptable
even on broadcast TV
to talk about sports gambling
and now you can do it
not just from your home, but games are on at all
kind of bizarre times and they pop up
the cancel college basketball game, they throw it on
Coastal Carolina and BYU,
let's go play, right?
More games, more odd times mean
more chances to win or lose
money in sports.
Sports gambling being very
normal is very much a
good thing from COVID-19.
All right, listen, I hope you have a
healthy and safe Christmas
season. We're not doing the family
interaction thing. I don't know what you guys are doing. Just a programming note that I'll be here
with you tomorrow. So if tomorrow you're packing the kids up and you're going somewhere for Christmas,
if you're going somewhere to just be with your immediate family or whatever, or you're just
driving around looking for presents, looking for late present guy. I'm your guy. I'm your guy. It is
kind of amazing that Amazon's a place you can click, click, click, get your gift the next day. Some of these other
websites are like, yeah, you'll get that January 24th. Oh, you like those, you like those Nike
low top, low top PG-5s? Yeah, those are, those will come in January 24th. So late shopping to do,
still plenty of time. And we'll be with you tomorrow. Do we have any heads up on guests tomorrow or do
we have to, we'll get that to you later. All right. Tune in, All Ball podcast is always really, really good. I had a
three-part series with Dan Dickow.
Amazing stuff.
That's all ball on the Hurd podcast network.
