I did want to start with Baker Mayfield, who went extremely viral on Thursday morning

for a press conference in which he gave his thoughts opinions and his stance on the situation going on with his contract, his status with the Buccaneers, and how he feels about, I would say currently his status in the organization. And before I give some opinions on it, why don't we, and I know a lot of you, I'm sure either saw snippets, maybe watch the whole couple or listen to the whole couple minutes. I thought, you know what, let's just play Baker Mayfield's comments, just in case anyone missed it, or if you were just kind of distracted while, he was talking, and then I will react to what he said. Here's Baker. Yeah, I mean, obviously,

I've told you guys I've been pretty upfront and honest about my feelings about Tampa, um, at being home for now our family, we're raising kids here. We love it here. Um, I wanted the deal done and set the deadline and told them it was going to be all ball after that. And I, I did mean that. And I don't know if they thought I was just going to take some of the offers that they gave, but, um, I'm at the point of my career. And, um, I'm at the point of my career. And, understanding what I've brought to this franchise. One, I'm very, very thankful for the chance they gave me. Do not get me wrong on that. But I've also know, I really know what I've brought to this franchise leadership-wise and even play-wise. It's been some of the best years of my career, and I think

it's only going to trend upwards, just being comfortable and feeling that. So disappointing in that regard to not have, you know, to feel disrespect a little bit. And that's really the disappointing part to feel undervalued after, you know, thinking you've earned it. This is not a poor me thing. There's a lot of other people that have it way worse off, but I can sit here and look at other quarterbacks and peers and evaluate myself based on that and put myself in certain categories that I deserve to be compensated for that. And I think I'm a franchise quarterback. I've been told I'm a franchise quarterback. It's been said publicly from ownership down here. And so to not have a deal done is very disappointing, but I said the deadline was a deadline, and I addressed the team to let them

know. I meant that. It's all ball. I'm with these guys. I think all the guys that have been here know exactly who I am. The guys that are new here, I wanted to address that, because they might have had a notion prior to come in here about who I am as a person, but it's all team. It's all about winning here now and what we're going to do, and hopefully Vita gets his back fixed and gets his deal done. I mean, he's the second longest tenured buck behind CG. and Vita deserves that. He's the anchor of our defense, and so I hope they take care of him. It's disappointing to say the least, but it's all ball here, and I know I'm going to have a good year. I know this team, the things that we went through last year put us in a good spot for this year,

depth-wise. A lot of guys have been thrown to the fire to be able to grow and learn fast, and it didn't go the way we wanted, but it's a new season, and it's going to help us in the long run this year, added some new pieces, and so I'm excited about it. It's all ball from here. you know, after today, like I'll answer a few more questions about the contract, but after today I'm not answering anymore because I'm not negotiating anymore. Before I give my opinion on what's going on, his thoughts, the Buccaneers angle, I do just want to say it is extremely refreshing. In a league where these older veteran quarterbacks are essentially corporations.

I mean, most of the top 12, 15 guys are make, you know, over the course of their career, make hundreds of millions of dollars. Most of them are pretty boring interviews. And I understand where they're coming from. Right? They are basically their own corporation. They're so afraid to ruffle any feathers publicly.

They've just become like cliché machines, which coaches, I'm sure like, organizations definitely like, but it can't be pretty boring at times. It's not like you're getting the most raw and real version of these guys. And I think the one reason Baker Mayfield

has always resonated with people whether you liked him or hated him but he kind of moved you emotionally because there was an authenticity behind him. And you get a rant like that which again, wherever you stand if you're a Bucks fan, you might have some feelings

but you're Browns fans you got some feelings whether you are a Texas fan you hated the guy since college. Like that makes sure, you kind of like, damn, you know? That is not something you consistently see from these quarterbacks. In contract situations, in other controversial situations involving the football team, they usually just kind of tow the company line because you know what?

It's just not worth it. And Baker's never been like that. Now, this is not a guy. He's made basically $160 million at the end of this season, right? He'll play out this season. you know, once week one comes, his contract will be guaranteed for this year. It's like $27, $28 million.

His career earnings will be like $158.9 million. So it's not like Baker currently is like, can't buy the house he wants to buy. Can't do something he doesn't want to do. That rant to me was 100%. It's like about the money, but the money represents respect. And my big take,

away is this. In the professional world, relationships are very conditional. My relationship with my son, with my wife, are not conditional, unless, you know, crazy things happen, right? Infidelity, murder, whatever, then you've got to reevaluate. But your family relationships, your immediate family relationship definitely are not conditional relationships. In the business world, they 100% are. I'm sure I got people listening to me that are top sales guys at their company. Go a year without selling anything. See how that CEO, that president, that board feels about you then. I've been fired a couple times.

Honestly, fired twice by the time I think I was like 31 years old. Your eyes will open to the real world. It is very cut throat. It is very black and white. Honestly, I think that's why football resonates with so many people. the overwhelming majority of players are basically year to year guys are basically not that much different. Obviously they make more money than the majority of Americans, but have a lot in common with at-will employees. They get cut, you know, they get traded, they get their contract not renewed.

The league stands for not for long. It is the ultimate production-based business. and I understand where Baker is coming from emotionally. Right? He, because when you're a quarterback, the number one thing they want you to do is win, produce, but there is a lot else that they put on your plate.

Leadership, representing the franchise. It's why Collins' rant has always, you know, I would say one of his biggest takes of all time is the backwards hat with the quarterback thing. because he valued the quarterback as representing these franchises worth six to ten billion dollars.

And they are basically in the C-suite right next to the CEO and CFO, which would be the GM and the head coach. Who do we often talk about? Owner, head coach, GM, quarterback. That's like your executive team. And Baker is asked to do that. And obviously once Tom retires, he helped carry the flag for this organization.

keep them going. And clearly if you've followed his career, if you've watched him talk, if you watch quarterback, it feels like he's grown up dramatically, right? Exponentially. Which I think a lot of us can relate to as guys. You take huge steps at certain times from 25 to 30.

You take another big jump from 30 to late 30s to 40. I mean, we just grow at slower rates than most women. It's just a fact. and Baker Mayfield, to me, as a person, feels like he's really in a great spot. From a maturity standpoint, from a family standpoint, from a leadership standpoint, from a guy people want to play with. But when I pay a quarterback, and we've talked about this forever, like most quarterbacks see the majority of their contract.

Unless you are a royal disaster like a Tua, like a Kyler, then your guarantees really come in. to play, but Baker Mayfield, for example, signed a three-year $100 million contract. All of that was not guaranteed. At the end of this year, he will have seen every single penny of that contract. Sam Darnold, right, did not get every penny of his contract. Guess what Sam Darnold is going to see of that three-year, whatever, $110 million contract he signed last year? Every penny of it.

So if you are better than like a top 20 quarterback, you are going to see all your money. And obviously the top guys, the Lamars, the Mahomes, the Josh Allen's, the Herberts, like, they never even think about not getting the guaranteed and the non-guaranteed portions of their contract. So when you're a general manager, and this is a tough spot for Jason Light, you have to become the bad guy sometimes. You just do. And would Baker Mayfield, would we be having this conversation, if his 2024 year, where he threw 41 touchdowns,

he was over 70% completion percentage, he had him in the playoffs, and obviously by the end of the season, they were playing as well as anybody. Probably not. He probably would have got a big extension. But that's not what happened last year. Because you start thinking as the general manager,

while your star offensive coordinator leaves, you bring in a new guy, Baker gets banged up, which obviously no one wants to get injured. Everyone that's ever played in the NFL, hell, like no one chooses to spray knees, to hurt elbows, but it does happen. And when that does happen, front offices have to ask themselves, do we feel comfortable that this is not going to happen again?

And this is not one of those situations in most industries. You don't know the answer. Baker Mayfield could go the next five years and never have an injury that slows him down at all. But you don't know that. And so Baker Mayfield, when he goes, I feel disrespected. I give him a lot of credit. He wasn't saying like, poor me in the sense that I'm not making enough money.

Like, I can't pay my mortgage. He laid it out there. There are a lot of people in the world that have it way worse than me. These are first class problems. This is a country club issue. This is about respect and he looks around and he sees, he views himself, I'm sure, in the category of the goffs, the Daks, the Purdys. And all those guys have been recently taken.

care of. Well, I look at Jared Goff and I go, he has been much more consistent, you know, even last year. Through over 30 touchdowns. He only threw eight interceptions. Like, I just think Jared Goff's a better player. Purdy. Well, what does he have going for? The decision maker is in love with them and he dominates the offense in which the decision maker, it's his baby. Dak Prescott, unique situation with Jerry Jones. So Baker, Mayfield, like, your coach is a major question. So let's say Todd Bowles at the end of this year gets fired. If I lock you up to, because the going rate,

if you just made $100 million over the last three years, if I'm Jason Light, what would it take for Baker Mayfield to sign the contract? Like a four-year, $200 million deal, $150 million guaranteed, something in that world? Because he just mentioned that the two-year contract was basically laughable, essentially, right? which I would guess they offered them like two years, 90 million,

kind of like a Daniel Jones situation. And Baker's going, I'm not Daniel Jones. And I don't blame him for thinking that. That's what makes these situations so difficult. And Baker's clearly better than Tua or Kyler. But Jason has seen those situations where teams regretted the contract pretty quickly. And because they have some question marks at Coach,

because they've had this revolving kind of door. offensive coordinator. We would all agree that he's not an Aaron Rogers, he's not a Peyton Manning where whoever's calling the offense doesn't necessarily matter. It's going to be elite. There are outside variables that are pretty important for Baker's success. Because if you look at 2024,

when he had by far the best year of his career, it turns out the guy calling the plays might just be a star. I saw the athletic or ESPN or I forget where I remember. read it. It was the athletic. They ranked like the top 10 play callers in the league. I don't know. Liam Cohen on the list and he was, I think it was Ted Nguyen. Yeah, it was the athletic. He was talking to defensive coordinators and defensive people throughout the NFL. Liam Cohen was ranked, it was just based on last year. I had Andy Reid. So last I checked, Andy Reid's going to the Hall of Fame. Now you can say you had a bad year or whatever. But still,

like, I don't think anyone on the bingo card would have had a couple years ago, Liam Cohen being viewed around the league as a better play caller currently than Andy Reed. Now, I got to see a little more body of work here, but I understand just based on 25 how someone could write that list. Well, we might not get a Liam Cohen back. So I have to be careful about paying, because the going rate is kind of the going rate. And I just think these situations are very, very complicated.

And I think Jason Light is doing the right thing by playing it out. The problem is, and Baker's saying, like, I'm not negotiating anymore. Let's just rock and roll. Let's go Joe Flacco. I'm going to prove you wrong. Because he said, and Jason, the owner, people around the building, previous coaching staff, has said this is one of the better quarterbacks in the league. All these guys have said that over the course of the last 24 months,

especially a couple years ago. But words in the real world in business don't mean shit. They don't mean a goddamn thing. A lot of people say, I love you to their significant other won't get down on a knee and propose. A lot of things are said in business. How many of you guys have thought,

like, we just close this deal? We just, and then no contracts ever signed. My wife said this for years. She never gets too excited over phone calls about real estate stuff. Because until a contract is signed, none of it matters. until a deal goes down and wheels are in motion,

you can't get ahead of yourself. And we're all guilty of doing that. But the older you get, you realize in the private sector, words are pretty meaningless. I'd argue words in general are pretty meaningless. Like actions define everything. And right now the buck's actions are,

yeah, we got some question marks. How could they not? because last year in a god-awful division, they couldn't make the playoffs. And offensively, once Baker was banged up, they were just off. Defensively, they were just bad team. But if they had gone 13 and 4

and been the two-seed, yeah, probably not sitting here. But isn't that the NFL? Isn't that life? It's what I've always said about all these coaches. It's about the process. It's about the process. It's about the process. kind of rings hollow to me,

unless you're Nick Saban saying that, unless you're Kurt Signetti saying that, unless you are Jeff Bezos saying that. It's easy for everyone to say that. Does your process work? Like, we're in a results-oriented society. Football is a results-oriented business. And you can make excuses, well, I had a bad shoulder,

my left tackle was banged up, my starting wide receiver was out. That's great. but welcome to the league. Welcome to life. So I have no problem with Baker Mayfield being pissed off. Everything he's heard, what he feels he's done for the organization. And I got no issue with Jason Light doing it.

If I was in his shoes, I would do the same thing. We got to play this out. If you prove me wrong, it's not my money. We'll get the owner to give you $175 million guaranteed. Throw 40 touchdowns. Lead us to 11 wins. Let's win the division. But if we have another year like last year,

how can I feel comfortable doing that? And that's what makes this business so difficult. There's got to be a guy in every building that is just the bad guy. Forever in New England, it was Belichick. Like everyone knew it was Belichick, right? How he often operates like the bad guy in Philadelphia. Right?

It's just a reality. Like, we can't pay you. We're going to trade you. We're going to cut you. And that's what Jason Light's doing right now. And Baker also made the comments about, you know, extending Vita V. Well, it's like, he's going to be 32 years old, bigger player. Like, have we seen the best version of him?

The going rate for him is massive. So if we give you the market rate on your two positions, if in a couple years we regret it, we are screwed. These are not small numbers. Chris Olavé, who in 24 was banged up. Missed a bunch of time. I mean, hell, there were questions. I didn't even think he said it last year.

It's like, crossed his mind. Like, do I even want to play football anymore? Last year got his mind right, 100 catches, nine touchdowns. By far the best year of his career. Just got $90 million guaranteed. So certain positions, obviously a big time defensive lineman

and especially a quarterback, when you make mistakes, it is crippling. It is because their money accounts for so much. much on the salary cap over the course of a couple years or if you want to get out of it. I mean, look at what the dolphins had to do to just get out of Tuatong of Iloa. The Arizona Cardinals were eating $36 million just to get rid of Kyler Murray. And I'm not saying comparing Baker Mayfield, but you just, that's how fast the league happens.

Peyton Manning was once cut. Tom Brady was once told, we don't want you anymore. Think about that. Packers traded Aaron Rogers. I don't know. If I had to think about it and my life, Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds, I'm thinking of non-football players.

Roger Federer. I mean, I would put Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rogers in my 41 years on this planet and 30 plus of being able to like cognitively remember watching people play sports as three of the best

definitely top seven, eight players in any sport I've ever seen. One cut, one traded, the other told you don't have a contract. And you can say, well, one was coming off a neck injury. One was 41 years old. One was kind of, I don't know, things got a little weird. You can give me all the excuses you want. Peyton Manning left won an MVP. Tom Brady left one in MVP.

Aaron Rogers, you know, towards Achilles. Even though I've been seeing the viral hard knocks clips of that Jets year, Their camp highlights, they look like they were going to win the Super Bowl. They really did. Or at least compete for one. I think they ended up going 7 and 10 that year. Obviously, Aaron only played four or five snaps. So I think it's fair to say if Aaron just plays that season with how good their defense is.

11 wins easy. So things change so fast. And there's this balance in football of the huge. human element. I bet Jason Light would tell you, like, I love Baker Mayfield. We love everything he stands for. But also the business side of like, I've got to be very careful about not making a mistake that we're going to regret.

And he'd go, well, you've got three years of evidence. It's like, yeah, well, the rates in which I have to pay you, I don't know if I'm comfortable doing. And you could argue, well, if he plays 17 games and balls out, what are you really learning that you didn't already know? and the answer is you'll never know because year to year things change so quickly and these situations get very, very difficult.

There's a small percentage of quarterbacks that you feel 100% great about paying a large amount of money to. It's like less than five. It really is. The majority of other good quarterbacks in the league, it's like, damn, we hope this goes well. Let's keep our fingers crossed. That includes the golfs, the pretext,

Hurdies, the Dax, kind of that crew of guys. I mean, look at Burrow. Last year all of a sudden disappeared. It wasn't his fault, but like that, boom, turf toe out for the majority of the year. I just think this league is really complicated. And the assets are all human beings. And like I said, it's refreshing to see a guy be a human being. And it's not because he's not already rich.

He's filthy rich. It's about like the respect based on the guys. Money's all relative, right? If you're making 100 grand and you go, all the other guys in my position in my industry are making 500 grand, you're going to be fucking pissed off. You just are. We're all kind of wired the same way,

especially like competitive people, aggressive people, ambitious people, people trying to do big things. and it's going to be interesting because the one question mark I would have is last year he played through injuries. If this year you get hurt,

like are you willing to just lay it on the line? Are you going to have the mentality? I'm doing it for the guy next to me? Right? It's like, you know, the Army Ranger is not fighting for the general back at the base. He's fighting for the guy to his right and to his left. But when there's money on the line,

like, yeah, I don't know if I'm going to play through this banged-up MCL. That's where it could get weird. I'm rooting for Baker-Mayfield to do well. He's, like he said, he's made Tampa Bay home. I just think that this, if it doesn't go that well, I'm picking the Saints to win the division. Things could get weird and things can get weird fast. The other comment I saw today that was just fantastic. One thing we've lost, you know, 10 years ago, it wasn't the SEC versus the Big Ten.

It was wherever you were from, wherever you went to college, there was like this, the regionality of college sports really resonated with me. Right? When you thought the Big 12, you thought Big 12, you thought Big. time offense. When you thought the Pac-12, you thought like innovative quarterback play. When you thought the Big Ten, you thought like physical football. When you thought SEC, you thought the best athletes, the best NFL players. And then depending on how it shook out, most of time it was Alabama, we'd argue who the top five teams in the country were. And then conference

realignment and conferences got destroyed. Now Stanford and Cal played each other in a baseball, the conference playoffs Stanford and Cal which are not that far away from each other as the crow flies probably 20 you know the crow could get there in 20 minutes depending on traffic I don't know hour and they played each other in North Carolina

so we've lost a lot of the soul of college football and a huge part of that was everyone kind of stuck their flag wherever they were from, right? If you were an SEC guy, you laughed at Oregon and Washington

and Cal and Stanford. Well, now Cal and Stanford play Florida State, Miami, and Clemson. Now Oregon plays Rutgers in Maryland. So Texas, forever, in Oklahoma, were the Big 12th. Now they play Alabama and Georgia. And I think Signetti,

because college football has basically become the NFL, the AFC and the NFC, which are essentially the Big Ten in the SEC. You know, obviously Miami, Notre Dame, there are a couple other programs, Texas Tech with the money they're spending. But the majority of our energy, the majority of the viewership,

come from those two bad boys. And I do think we've lost something that I grew up on, which we're never getting back. So I'm not holding on to the past, even if I missed it a little bit. But we do need some sort of like hatred and rivalry, besides just all the comments coming out of the SEC Media Day was kind of complaining about nine conference games and the playoffs. And the one thing with the NFL, some now coaches complain a little bit about like the international games.

But you'll never hear a coach being like, we got it easy this year because we get the Titans, the Cardinals, and the commanders. Like no one talks about their stuff. schedule in terms of, well, we got this easy team, or we got to play this. It just is what it is. Every year it rotates, you all eventually play each other over the course of a couple years. Sometimes it turns out a little bit easier, but things can change at a moment's notice because you could be playing the Bengals and Joe Burrow, he'd get turfedow and then all of a sudden

you're playing Joe Flacco or something, which actually beat Mike Tomlin last year, which was actually pretty cool. But you know what I mean? It just, there's a different vibe to the NFL and college football. just about the games because everything is so out of balance in college football with the non-conference. You can play a bunch of teams no one's ever heard of. You can kind of stack the books a little bit.

I mean, Missouri does that. Their record's always like 8 and 4, 9 and 3, but if you look, they got four Patsy wins. That's why I respect Texas and Ohio State playing each other, Florida State and Alabama. Again, it's very, you know, cyclical in terms of like you may get Alabama. They're down relative to Sabin. but regardless, it's just all out of whack. But the one thing that is very clear is these two conferences now are viewing each other eye to eye as they got all the money,

they got all the players, and we got all the teams going to the playoffs every year. But most of these coaches aren't going to take direct shots and talk a bunch of shit. Like Ryan Day is at what I'd argue is the best current program in the country, him or Georgia and Kirby Smart. I would say even Kirby, they're not going to say that much. even if you go back to Sabin

Sabin would go to these media days and he would say like big picture college football stuff but he would never like take jabs at other conferences other opponents at least that I can remember so to me there's besides some of the

2014 team playoff we need this and we need that just on the field is what I like like when Ben Johnson hates the Packers you know what everyone goes fuck yeah This is awesome. So when I see Signetti today come

and say we don't run a hype machine up here in the Midwest, we believe everything is earned, not given. When we fall short, we say we fell short. We don't cry a river and whine and complain. All right, it's why we're the best. We need some of that. We need some legitimately. We think we're better than you.

It used to happen a lot when I was a kid. whether it was Jimmy Johnson and Lou Holtz or Joe Paterno to Steve Spurrier talking a bunch of shit. And I'm not talking, talking shit, like, we need more teams in the playoffs because if you look at the NFL, 40% of their league makes the playoffs and only 8%. Like, we're exhausted with that. You know, our roster, we need a salary cap on NIL. Can you just play the games? Can you guys just figure it out and make the football aspect of it feel big? because Saturdays are incredible.

A good Saturday night game in college football at Penn State, at Oregon, some of those SEC programs, when Michigan, Ohio State play each other, there's just a pureness to the game that is like, this means a lot. But all the other stuff, and I'm someone who loves college football, I get exhausted with it. I'm like, this is, Ole Miss is suing the LSU players and, like, Lane Kipp. It's like, this is so, it never happens to the NFL because you can't just steal a coach. You know why?

Because they're under contract. If I want Sean McVey, I can't just offer them $50 million a year. Doesn't work like that. So college football is a lot to figure out. But one thing that Kurt Signetti, who, what are you really going to say about him, he went to Indiana and in his second year played Oregon and Alabama on his way to the national championship and beat the living shit out of him. Took Cahlin Du Boers making $100 million, beat him 38 to 3.

I don't have the Oregon score up top of my head. That feels like it was even bigger. And then took Miami, which if you watch the draft, they had how many guys go in the top 25, and one of their best players is a true freshman, and they had a quarterback get drafted in the third round, and won that game, which you would say Miami, at least in the last 45 years,

is definitely one of the best programs in the country. The opposite of Indiana, which was legitimately the worst program in the history of Division 1, Power 4, Power 5 football. So I appreciate that. We just need some more of that. Like, I like when Ben Johnson goes, I don't fucking like the Packers.

It's like, well, what did Matt LaFleur do to him? Who cares? He just doesn't like him. You know? I appreciate some people that just don't like other people. Because we all do. We all have those feelings. Hell, I see people on the Internet all the time

that work kind of in my industry. I've never even met the guy. I'm like, I fucking hate that guy. We all have those feelings. And most of these coaches is back to Baker Mayfield, no one says anything anymore. It's very rare.

And I'm not talking the occasional like wide receiver linebacker. I'm talking the coach or the quarterback that just goes, you know what? Fuck that guy. I hate that guy. I hate the SEC, they never shut up. We've dominated the national championship

now for the last couple years. We're the best conference. I don't think there's another guy in the country that would have said that. And in fairness, like Dan Lannning, who I like a lot, if he had said that, you know, it's like, Dan, let's win a playoff game first. But this guy just ran the fucking table,

beat everyone in his path, including SEC team, including the best teams in the Big Ten, in Oregon and Ohio State, and then Miami, who was littered with NFL players. Who I, you know, like Messador and Bain and the offensive tackle, the win of the jack. Those guys are going to be good NFL players.

Honestly, like, Those guys are going to make Pro Bowl, some of them. So it's refreshing because we need some just like, this matters a lot. When Steve Spurrier used to just talk shit about Florida State, that was fun. Like, that was enjoyable. You know, and we just don't get any of that anymore.

It's everyone just whining about stuff that, like, can we just talk about the games? And that's kind of what Signetti's doing. We're just better up here. We don't bitch and moan, even though it's like everyone does. but it's just like, you know, take a shot. Hopefully someone in the SEC,

hopefully Kirby takes a shot back. And we just amp this up because we know we're all moving to. It's eventually going to be a two-conference sport. What else is going on? A couple of quick things. Social media is what it is. Some of these viral clips

on just different players in shorts and t-shirts of like, A.J. Brown can't play anymore. Marvin Harrison blows. These are just two that come to mind because I've seen them on the internet today. And who knows? Maybe A.J.'s best days are behind them.

Maybe Marvin Harrison will be just one of the all-time most over-hite prospects we've ever seen. But to make these judgment calls in the end of July when they're not in shoulder pads, and this happens all over with all different positions, it's gotten a little crazy.

J.J. McCarthy, Kyler Murray. I've seen all sorts of stuff. Can we just wait until the pads come on? No one's playing football yet. Nobody. Well, I guess maybe a couple teams have pads on. The Panthers and the, is it the Panthers and the Cardinals

are playing in the Hall of Fame game, I think? Shows you how dialed in I am on the Hall of Fame game. But my point is that we live, live in an era where back in the day, you could just fail through training camp. You know why? Because it's practice. And you could just get better. You could improve.

You could screw up. And now everything. This is why the NFL, and they never will, does not allow anyone in practice besides for like 15 minutes when the season starts. Because can you imagine if we got the same thing during the week of like week six of just like this is what's going on with so-and-so team, so-and-so player, look how he looks in practice. It would be exhausting.

Now, don't get me wrong. I mean, I click on it, I watch it, but it does feel like it's kind of jumped the shark a little bit. Right? Dan Campbell said in no TAs. We can get excited, we can get fired up, but at the end of the day, this is a pajama party. This is not basketball.

You can play five-on-five. In baseball, I can take live BP against Roger Clements. You cannot play football. The line of scrimmage literally defines the sport. They cannot play without pads. It's not possible, right? You can't run the ball without pads. It doesn't exist.

It's like you can call a run, but no one's blocking, tackle. It just doesn't happen. And you could argue even in a lot of these camps now, that are all two-hand touch, it's not even real of football either. Because like, what do you tackle them? Maybe. What if he broke the tackle?

What if he actually made him miss? You don't really know until the live bullets start flying. And I just, I feel for some of these guys that are just getting shit on on the internet for like one bad rep on July 29th. It's like, this guy can't play. It's like, well, maybe he can't, but we definitely don't know based on that clip. Before we dive into the mailbook, bag. Obviously, my last week's Fugazi Friday on the smores from Kirkland. Well, from Costco,

the Kirkland brand, avoid those at all costs because they're too easy to eat. And I definitely, a week later, I feel dramatically fatter. And I was trending in the right direction. I was feeling like getting my summer bod going, losing some LBs, and then just cash that thing in three days. And it usually takes a couple days to hit. And now I just, I mean, I feel just terrible. One thing Kirkland does, provide is their cold brew coffees. No free ads here, but at Costco are just, are pretty powerful. I was really struggling today. I had one in the morning, but, you know, my son is like Jaco Wilnick.

He's up at like 4.45, 5 o'clock on the dot every single night or every single morning. Like, he will not make it past 5 a.m. So it's usually in the late 4th, you start hearing that crying. And it's like, oh, he's up. And now he'll retake a nap at like 6. But like you're getting up with them at you know in the force and Sometimes you just need a little extra juice and those those cold brew coffees man They got like 225 milligrams of caffeine I had my second once I had like four and 50 grams of

Okay actually I had a and I had double espresso I made two around lunch So one of those days you know you're just dragging you're like what do I need to do Not an Adderall guy so you just you just take as much caffeine as you can and the second coffee definitely worked for me other than that, I don't really have any Fugazis beside. One thing I have noticed the last couple weeks, this little stretch from like basketball kind of ends, we got a little lucky with the World Cup, I don't watch baseball anymore.

There is nothing on television. Absolutely nothing on television. Like, what do people watch? Like, I can only watch reruns a shark tank and Guy Fieri going to some sweet little, you know, diner that has some bomb burger with an onion ring on the top and guacamole on the bottom of it so many times. It's like, you know, I just miss watching a game.

And they just don't exist right now. So, and I don't really, we're still a couple weeks from preseason games. And even those, you'll watch a series or two, like, this is pretty terrible. You know, this is bad. So we're still a while away from real football being played. and I did watch on Amazon Prime Video The Agency

I binge that over the last like three weeks Pretty good watch It was like kind of thriller drama CIA You know undercover Flip agents You know kind of committing trees It's just

It's pretty entertaining I wouldn't give it like a 10 out of 10 But it's probably like a 7 and a half Just an easy solid watch When I was in Los Angeles, I went to the movie. I had a kind of afternoon to kill that's right by the mall where I stay in Century City. Nicest mall in America. I mean, incredible.

Food court, best food court I've ever been to. They got a Tesla dealership in the mall. I went to see Obsession, which I didn't really know that much about. I was like, I just wanted to see something. This is before the Odyssey, and I couldn't make it through a three-hour movie. So I just kind of wanted something under two hours. And then I saw it. It was really good. I think you can watch it now, like on either one of the streaming services. Is they made it for under a million dollars. This guy, like, created a YouTube channel, like within the last five years and kind of blew up.

Like, if that guy was a stock, I'd put some cash in him. That was just an entertaining watch. It was easy. You know, I wouldn't exactly call it a horror movie. But it could keep you on the edge of your seat a little bit. It was like more disturbing probably than horror. Had a little horror. Had a little horror. to it, but I wouldn't quite put it aggressively in that genre, but it was, it was pretty good. It was pretty good. And then you kind of Wikipedia of the guy and you read about his, his backstory, you're like, this is a pretty cool story. In a day and age where it's just really hard to get things made, not that I'm some like Hollywood insider here, but based on what people say, to see someone have a bunch of success that didn't have that much backing financially is just, you know, it's few and

Really wanted the Giants to take Caleb Downs at 5 though. I get the value in drafting Reese, but I think Downs would have been had a bigger impact this year. My question, would you have drafted Downs at 5 over Reese? if you were the Giants. Side note, we also passed on Downs at 10 as well. The thing with the draft, especially if you're John Harbaugh,

you're not just drafting the guy for year one. Now, I think Caleb Downs, if you told me he's a Hall of Famer, it wouldn't shock me. Arvel Reese has Hall of Fame potential as well. There is just a lot of question marks, right? 20 years old, one-year starter, ceiling is as high,

is the sun, but it's like they got to kind of create a position. You know, what is he actually doing on a down-in, down-out basis? I haven't really read much of Giants practice, so you probably know more than me. They obviously have a lot of other guys at that position. But like, I bet in three years they go, Kvon Tibado is not going to be on the team. Brian Burns won't be on the team any longer. Our two edge guys are going to be car.

order in Reese. And anytime if you can have too high end, because they have high end talent. If we can turn them into their ceiling, we're going to be ass kickers. So the value, if I can turn them into what I hope he can become, is just higher than a safety. So I understand why they did it. Listen, if Caleb Downs played tackle, played a different position that's viewed as quote-unquote premium, pass rusher, he would have been the second pick in the draft. But when you are a position that just isn't valued as high, it just kind of is what it is.

Offseason mailbag question. How do your advertising deals typically work? feel free to ignore the old sponsor names, no free ads. A while back, blank, was in your main sponsor and now at Seatgeek. You've also had Zinn and other tobacco companies. How often do these deals get renewed and is it usually competitors in the same general industries just trying to one up each other at a time? I think it all depends, right?

Obviously, the more money you pay longer a deal goes, the more exclusivity you can get in terms of the category, in terms of what you ask for. We got some deals in motion right now about category exclusivity. Obviously, you want that. It just costs more money. I mean, we can sign a deal for a month. We've signed deals for six months, a football season. Obviously, Netflix and multi-year contract. So it just completely depends.

I've been very fortunate. We got an incredible sales team led by Dane. My guy Terrence back in Boston, who we locked up the deal a couple years ago at the Ryder Cup, who actually is where I think we're redoing that deal. So you just, they just kind of hit me up, hey, would you be interested in this? I go, hell yeah.

I mean, most of the time, honestly, I say yes. So I would say I'm a pretty easy yes. the only things that I'm uncomfortable doing are like, I don't even know what. I guess I've said no, I think, to some like, some dick pills before, but that's usually about it. And again, most of the stuff that gets funneled my way

are things that would, I think, fit the quote-unquote show. I mean, not everything ideally does, but we're pretty cognitive of that. But I would say a deal could be as short as a couple months a deal could be as long as multiple years. And it's just like any deal, any of you guys sign in whatever industries you work with, right? The more you pay for, the more you get. That's really that simple.

And different companies have different needs. We're very lucky here because of you guys. I mean, we have been a very, very lucrative show for brands. It's gone very, very well because of the people listening to the show. And the other thing is football is so big. Because this is a football show, so many people want in brands buy around advertising deals around the NFL. I mean, and college football. I mean, those things, I cannot.

It really is crazy how important. the fall months surrounding football has become in kind of the business marketing world. It's crazy from when I first got into the business to what it is now. That's why I always say I feel very fortunate that I talk about football. I heard you talk about JJ McCarthy possibly getting traded and I hear other people say he'll be the next Baker or Sam to go to a team and blossom. The difference I think is he had a quarterback offensive coach mind where the other two had dumpster fire organizations. Do you have any faith that JJ has a market for teams to go after? I think Baker was a three-year starter at Oklahoma and was incredible college player.

Sam Darnold was physically in a different kind of world than JJ to me. And like, I forget if it was a sophomore year, was his big year for USC. Because I think he came out. Maybe he played as a redshirt freshman, then came out after his redshirt sophomore year. He had just asked to do more. So there was more ceiling physically with Sam Darnold than JJ. And like I said, Baker had just, based on his college production, what they asked him to do was just a different universe than JJ.

I don't really like those comps for JJ. To me, JJ would have to kind of come in and be like an Alex Smith version, but you're 100% right. He got to play for Kevin O'Connell or the other two teams. you know, played for the other two guys played for the Browns and the Jets. And even when they both got traded at Carolina, it was Matt Ruhl and he got fired. So I don't think it's a great comp. Want to hear your thoughts on what you think these players will do this season.

Players I'm out on. Harrison Jr., Tyler Shuck, the Browns quarterback room. Players I'm all in on. DJ Moore, Cam Ward, Caleb Downs. Let's start with the all-in. I agree with you, Caleb Downs. I would expect defensive rookie of the year candidate, if not winner.

DJ Moore. My guess is he has a big year in Buffalo. Be stunned if he is not extremely productive. Cam Ward, how good are they going to be on offense? I think is a fair question mark. First year under day ball, I got some reservations there.

Clearly a very physically gifted player, but they're going to ask a lot of Carnell Tate right away. I don't know if I'm all in on him yet. Players you're out on. Quarterback room, agree. Marvin Harrison, Jr., I don't even think he's the best wide receiver on his own team. I disagree with you on Tyler Shuck. I would say Tyler Shuck right now throws 33 touchdowns.

That's bold. But I think, and I think the Saints are good. Question, long time listener. Are you sold on the coaching staff for? for the Giants. Harbaugh was about to get fired for the Ravens before Lamar was drafted and Nagy scares me as an O.C. I do think they got a lot of just, you got Nagy, you got Callahan.

The one thing Harbaugh had for the course of the last several years is pretty consistent group of guys in his inner circle. You know, it's really Munkin, then before that, Roman, and Roman was already with his brother. You know, all the guys who was defensive coordinators had kind of mentored under him. and kind of that defensive unit. It's just a lot of moving parts. And I just think the roster, the culture there, there's a lot going on.

I'm not as high as in the Giants as people that are picking them to make the playoffs. I'm not going to pick the Giants to make the playoffs. So not necessarily the coaching staff. I got more questions with the personnel than I do the staff. New staff, I think they'll be like, I've known a couple guys that work for John and say he's incredible to work for.

Motivationally, how good he is with the staff, the direction, I mean, Lamar Jackson would have saved a lot of people's jobs. I mean, that was just, that was a great pick. The entire league passed on them. So you get credit for doing that, building the offense around him, and kind of they struggled in the playoffs relative to how good they were in the regular season. But, you know, to be the number one seed twice and not make the Super Bowl is a little bit of a letdown.

But I expect this year to be a little bumpy. Maybe I'll change my tune by like October. but I would say like 7-8 wins Question for the pod Which quarterback do you think will be the next to receive a contract? C.J. Stroud, Jalen Hertz or Baker Mayfield? Maybe Stafford because of age. Bryce Young, if he has one good season.

I don't think any of these guys or teams are rushing to, you know, I think C.J. Stroud, are they going to give, you know, if he turns into Alex Smith, which is what he needs to do for them to be good, what does that contract look like? I don't envision them breaking them off with some crazy amount of money. Jalen Hurts still has multiple years on his contract. They're not giving Jaylon an extension. Baker is just like it's either happening or it's not.

Right. And to me, Baker would have to have a disaster season and not have a market in the offseason for some of these teams that are drafting high. So I would say Baker Mayfield just based on time. And if Baker Mayfield throws 35 touchdowns and the offense, is good, they'll give him a contract. RE, meaning regarding, Tyreek Hill's no power comment.

As a former college athlete who's been through a major leg rehab, that's just a normal part of the process. Early on, you focus entirely on rage of motion. When you switch to strength, the leg literally feels useless. My impression was he'll likely play again, but not ready until mid-season,

but it's on the table he could be a shell of than the athlete that he once was. I think when I talked about the no power, I didn't mean that he wouldn't gain some strength over the course of time. I do stand by like I'm out on this. Tyreek's game at his size was all about being, I mean, he was a Ferrari.

He's one of the most unique players we've ever seen. Honestly, he's one of the best wide receivers I've ever seen. For being that small, he just, he was, in his heyday, he was incredible. But like you have that significant of a knee injury. I mean, we're talking, it's September. So I, am I going on a limb to say he doesn't play this year? And I think he's just never really,

he's got a lot of baggage off the field too. So to me, you lose a step, kind of your package being small, super fast guy. That's not like he can just become a possession wide receiver. So I hear what you're saying. and if I came off, like, he's never, he's going to have no power of the rest of his life. I didn't mean necessarily that. But thanks for the clarification.

But yeah, I mean, it's, I think it's, I think it's probably over. Uh, we'll end on this. I just got engaged a few weeks ago to my long-term girlfriend. Congratulations. Yesterday we found out she was a few weeks pregnant. Things are going well for my guy. I'm 26. And I make decent money.

Living in Canada. Bruttle taxes. Texas. Any tips for financially prepping for a baby? Also, should we push the wedding back and have the first kid rush the wedding before having a, or rush the wedding before having a kid? Obviously, that depends on your family dynamics, your personal dynamics. It's different for everybody in terms of like rush the wedding. I've known people that have done that. I've known people that have found yourself in a similar situation and waited. It's kind of on her too. I mean, at this point in time, like she couldn't drink or you can enjoy the wedding but it's not quite the same of like a true

party for her uh which is it's really the days about her not necessarily you uh so that's personally i i would push it back my wife definitely if if she had been in that position would have pushed it back there was no way she was going to not enjoy yourself at the wedding but again that is a very very personal situation for her uh You know the one thing I've noticed about having a kid? If you, like, especially when they're early as a baby, they're kind of like a dog. Whether you, like, the dog doesn't really care.

Like, they don't even know if you have money or don't have money. And the baby, like, right when you have the first couple months, is basically just in a couple swaddles. You need money for some diapers and drinking from your wife's boob. So in terms of money, the early on, You don't need that much. Now, once they start like Jack, you need toys, you need some space for him to kind of roam around. It changes a little bit.

But early on, I remember having this thought, like, he doesn't, we could be in a little shack. As long as it wasn't 100 degrees inside, we'd be okay. So you don't really need that much, I would say. I don't, I'm trying to think. A couple things, you know, she pours breast milk out, the bottle washer. I think, you know, I don't know how much it costs. We got it in our baby registry, I think, is a must. I mean, we use that thing 10 times a day.

Go through a lot of diapers. Now at this point, I mean, he has days where he goes through seven T-shirts in one day. pukes on them spits on them poops on them shorts clothes you go through a lot of clothes and onesies but if i remember like first couple months you're basically just in a swaddle and a diaper so you just need i mean a decent amount of swaddles because they're going to have some blowouts in those too but you don't need that much uh obviously as they get older i guess they need a little bit more but again babies a little like dogs they don't really they're not judgmental whether you live in like a mansion or whether you have a tiny little home,

like they just want to be around you, which is honestly kind of refreshing. Like, a guy likes me, not because of anything else beside, I'm just there holding them, which kind of makes you feel good. So, congratulations. Personally, for me, I wanted early on,

I was like, let's just go to the courthouse and get married. We don't need to have a wedding. And then a guy, I went to this, I forget the event, but I was talking to a guy I didn't even know him and we just started bullshitting because I was adamant

like I do not need a wedding I didn't want a wedding this was not something I had grown up dreaming about I wanted to get married but I would have been cool going to a courthouse having some buddies over and doing it

and he told me that again it doesn't matter weddings are all relative to you personally but like it is something that you'll look back upon that you'll want to do so

this guy kind of sold me on the fact, and I kind of came around because, I mean, it wouldn't have been Michael anyway. We were going to have one. She was having one. But I'm glad we did. I'm glad we did. And we both got pretty drunk that night, but good times. Adios.
