What is going on? This is John Middilkoff from the Three and Out podcast. And this is the best of of my favorite takes, our best takes as we head on into football season. One thing I wrote down, because I don't know why I did this to myself, the majority of Sunday morning I had a four bucks going my other TV was the other games going and you're not gonna

if you got two TVs you just you mute one and you pick the audio of one of the four games and then depending if it's time's a little off one's at half time the others or not you can switch around but I I don't spend that much time every two minutes going audio to audio

I just kind of stick with what I think is the bigger game or better announcers and I just listen to Nancy and JJ Watt. And my big takeaway, and I wrote this down, Tony Romo's never coming back. They clearly wanted out of the Tony Romo business before he blew like a,

I guess Keenan Allen was the guy that blew a two-four, Tony was like a one-seven. Listen, I'm not one to judge. I'm not saying I've gotten a car, but I've blown in the twos in my life if you would have had a breathalyzer around me, just haven't been drinking or whatever.

But like when they're looking for, a reason and you get caught driving on the freeway like they got their reason. And then you watch JJ Watt, like JJ's not like the little engine that could. He was one of the prominent star players of his generation who was extremely commercially viable, viable, right? He was, I would say, one of the key marketing figures non-quarterback in the NFL for a six, seven-year period. And then you just listen to him. It's like, it's pretty good. He's an easy listen. I think sometimes we act like guys are, like Greg Olson, who I respect and like a lot, he's good.

And listen, there's a big drop off between good and like, God, I don't want to listen to this guy. And then there's a big gap between like John Madden in his prime and good. All these guys. And being good, like you can have a 20, 30 year career. And Tony Romo at one point in time was good. And then clearly he just stopped caring. And then they look for a reason to get out of the $80 million, and they found one. And then they just inserted JJ Watt, and I would guess they never look back. So whether you consider that Wally Pipped, whether you consider that, you know, one night in the clink cost you a gig. Now I would imagine Tony Romo and his people will eventually sue for the money that he's owed.

If they try to fire for cause, I'm not sure how all that's going to work out. but I feel my strong suspicion is JJ Watt holds that position for the foreseeable future. The other thing is this is what I've been asking for. Tom, I think, and this is part of it, right? You become more comfortable with the cameras and the microphone. And the more you become comfortable, the more I get the real you.

He called a Dak Prescott touchdown or a long pass, a piss missile. when Jaden's arm snapped he said oh shit like Tom that's all we want we want the guy from the locker room that everyone for 20 years said coolest guy going would come up to me and introduce myself was just a dude even as you became peak famous and I get your world now in your late 40s

the fame in which you have is extremely unrelatable even from Tom probably 15 20 years ago of fame like Tom was always first famous, I would say over the last five to ten years, he's gone into a different stratosphere. And that can change you, right? It's like, was it Eddie Murphy or one of those guys said, you know, it's hard to be funny in satin sheets. Like comedians, the more success they have, the richer they get. Like, their jokes oftentimes aren't quite the same because typically when they're coming up, their jokes are kind of relatable. It's why we all laugh. They're willing,

like before they're rich, they're willing to offend a lot of people because you know what? Most of us will laugh. Then you get super rich. It's like, I don't want to ruin this special. And they're not quite the same guy. And whatever Tom Brady has deep inside him, the guy that grew up, went to Michigan, became the Patriot quarterback, and was just a dude.

We just want more of that. And he's starting to show some sides. And I think that comes with just being a little more comfortable. And I'm not saying even the swear word, but it just shows you like he's becoming a little at ease in the booth, which was understandable early on that he wasn't that comfortable because it's a way different profession than the one he had playing quarterback

when he could do and say whatever he wanted on the field. Obviously, it's a little different, and it's hard. I mean, by all, you know, accounts, you don't have much time, things move fast, you have all these people, these critics that judge you. It's like, what are you actually really supposed to say? Now he has some of these rules that he can't just rip people, not even saying that he would have,

but I just want more piss missiles from Tom. The other thing is, I didn't see this yesterday, because again, I didn't have the audio on, but all the Eagles player said after the game, Lane Johnson said, it was like 160 degrees on the Titans field, that he said, it's one of the five toughest games he's ever played.

Sireani had to get an IV. Other guys were saying their cleats were melting and it felt like they were at a NASCAR race and the pit crew. Now, I think some of these conversations with the NFLPA and the NFL, it's not always black or white. You know, it's like the NIL stuff going on right now. Like, there's got to be some middle ground. I don't pretend to be like hardcore on one side or the other.

But clearly you've got to figure something. out and meet in the middle. I do think the grass and turf fields should be pretty black and white. At this point in time, because, you know, it's talked about a lot like the equity and the valuations of the franchise, just when it comes to different conversations about money and paying and teams are cheap or whatever, you could have bought your house for 500 grand and you could be sitting in today and worth $5 million. it doesn't mean that you have $4.5 million extra in your pocket, right? So until you sell or take a loan out against it, that equity is kind of meaningless.

So like a lot of these franchises have a lot of equity, unless they're willing to sell some of that for a high valuation, who cares? It's just a fake number on a piece of paper, right? But what does matter is cash flow and revenue. And all these teams are seeing a historic amount of, of cash coming through and coming out. That's why all these guys, it's why Warren Buffett to Mark Walter

love the insurance business. You know why? Every single month, people are paying. And for whatever reason, no matter the type of insurance, health insurance, car insurance, home insurance, when they have to pay you,

that money you've been paying, you have to fight tooth and nail for it. Yet you are legally obligated in a lot of times, whether it's home or whether it's car, to pay them. Yet when you get screwed, you have to go to war

to get some of that money back. It's kind of a crazy scam thing they got going. But regardless, I was told, and I've mentioned this before, that the price for the field, and again, this is like, let's use the 49ers as an example, that number ranges between $3 and $5 million, extra a year for them to have that grass, maintain that grass, take it on and off for different events

in relation to if they had turf, which after the initial price is relatively cheap and free. So when you hear these people bitching and moaning about not doing grass, it's costing them, let's say, $3 to $5 million. Let's just pick $5 million. Let's get the highest number. When you have a salary cap of $300 million and an annual revenue from the media of $450 million, that's not even counting the gate in your stadium. That's not counting the suites.

That's not counting the parking. That's not counting when Taylor Swift or Maroon 5 or you pick comes through. WrestleMania or the Final 4, all that type stuff with your catching it. So when you get into a situation, and listen, the Titans are getting a new stadium and hopefully they do grass. My guess is they probably do turf. But you have no excuse at this point because that seems. a little ridiculous to me. The turf clearly, listen, I have turf in my backyard.

On 110 degree day, you really feel that. You know, where the grass is just not as hot. And for people to, like, Lane Joss is not just making this up, you know. And I think the league, this is something the NFLPA needs to draw a hard line on. And listen, the business people of the NFL aren't dummies. But I think they're holding this in their back pocket that they'll eventually give in on this and they're going to ask for stuff on their end, whether that's the 18th game, whether that's whatever it may be. But you want lifetime health care or you want grass fields?

Well, what do you think the current players are going to vote on? Give me grass fields. So I would guess one day in the relatively near future we have all grass fields because that's, this is not 1997. You know, I mean, hell, the Raiders played with a dirt infield. in September up until they moved to Vegas in like 2000, boy, every year that was, 20. So up until 2019, they had dirt infield. Like that type of stuff is just an embarrassment. It can't happen. Dirt infields, turf.

Like, let's, we're paying these guys. I mean, Jalen Hertz is making $50 million. Cam Ward was the number one overall pick. Jeffrey Simmons is like one of the highest paid defensive tackles in the league. So is Jalen Carter. we're putting them out there in 160 degree turf field. Like, come on. That's something like Roger or some of these guys.

The four box for this weekend, we got some bad games. I mean, there is a lot of blowout potential. Seattle, Washington, Chiefs, Miami. If either one of those two teams try,

which, you know, the Chiefs now, Monday night football, Sunday night football, getting up for road game against, I'm pretty sure the least talented team in the league. If they try, that's a massacre. If Seattle maintains the same edge that they had on defense against the Patriots, and then after the first couple series

against the Cardinals, Marriota doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell. done. I mean, absolutely screwed. The Arizona Cardinals, you know, the Marvin Harrison thing, feels like they'd get a little weird too. Just put the Michigan Corner on injured reserve. But Seattle, Washington, Kansas City, Miami. Those got blowout written all over.

Now I get us the NFL and players are human beings, but if those two teams try, it will not be close. The four box for me in the morning, was pretty easy. Even though maybe I'm just a boomer, I can't always figure this out. That sometimes I try to manually put the box together and it won't let me add the exact four games.

It happened to me last week. I could do three of the four, but like I couldn't put the fourth game in that spot. And everyone keeps it so great that you can, am I an idiot? Am I dumb? Because I'm doing the manual and the game that I want to add to this,

these three games will not work. So I typically have to put it like the game that I want on the other TV with some other crappier games and then have a crappier game in my four box, but ideally it just shows up. And my options would be Chargers at Buffalo, Houston and Indy, Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, New England, Jacksonville. I think the first game is pretty self-explanatory. Like we've already seen Buffalo's high end.

If they can figure out their defensive secondary as the season goes and Josh is healthy, they're good enough to win the Super Bowl. because they have that guy playing quarterback. I don't think anyone disputes that. Their head coach isn't just swaggy. He seems like he's doubled down on the aggressiveness. They're throwing bombs. They have looked incredible through two weeks on offense.

And their D-line's good. So if you have a good defensive line and an unreal offense, you're going to have a shot. He's got to make enough plays in the secondary. The story of this game to me is the Chargers. Are they just going to wave the white flag? Because if you look at their schedule, if they get rolled in this game,

which, you know, it was like a religious, experience for Buffalo, opening in the new stadium. Josh Allen is kind of just crowned as the best player in the league. Your opening night, prime time, Thursday night. Like that place was, you got Bruce Smith firing of the, that was incredible. Be hard to maintain that same level for just a day game, but the place is going to be rocking. It's going to be really loud. And like, the Chargers are used to playing road games because even when they're at home,

they're on the road. Like that was a Raider home game last week. Of course it was. They're always Raider home games. And I don't know, man. I mean, their offensive line, we'll get into Herbert a little bit later. I'll do a couple of mailback questions.

I went back and watched all of his throws. Their old line stinks. I mean, it's the guard center guards a major issue. Joe Alt, I mean, playing Crosby's never easy, but they have not played well through the first two weeks. And defensively at any moment, like when Kirk Cousins is hitting explosives on you, you got problems.

So to me, the number one question in this game, and you could argue is one of the biggest stories of the week, like are the charges just a white flag team? Is it just over before it even started? You start 0 and 3 with their schedule? Like, Syah, Nara. Houston and Indy, one of these two teams going on 3. And, you know, Houston went 0 and 3 last year and finished 12 and 5.

So they have been in the gutter before and figured out a way to get out. So you could see a scenario. It's like, we've been here, done that. But they are favored on the road this week against a divisional opponent. Who, we've got to give them some credit. They actually look pretty good against the Kansas Chiefs. Like, they did look pretty good.

But they haven't won a game since early November, 2025. And if you keep losing, I don't know what else she's going to write down on a little notepad beside Chris Ballard fired, Shane Steichen fired. because at the end of the day it's like hey I think you're pretty good at your gigs but we just went 6 and 11 or 7 and 10 and all of a sudden you're 0 and 3

like I don't give them the same benefit out of Houston to figure it out because of what we've witnessed over the last several years like this team just doesn't make the playoffs hell for a couple years they've been a game or two out it wasn't since that Gardner Minchu last game of the season

where he missed him on the little out route. So, I don't know. I think this indie thing has got a very, very good chance to come to ahead. And I know clearly she likes those two guys, but how do you keep people?

I mean, Chris Ballard already said it. Like, I don't have a contract at the end of this season. So if she would just fire him, maybe she brings in a new GM and lets him evaluate Shane Steichen. We know how those situations typically work out. this thing could get, and at the end of the day, they're relying on Daniel Jones. Alec Pierce is now on Ninja Reserve. They paid him a ton of money.

He got hurt. You know, he's missed all a training camp. Now he hurts his heel. Just disastrous. And typically when things unravel to me in pro sports, there is just like a drip, drip, drip quality. And all of a sudden, it starts feeling inside the building like nothing can go right. Like we missed on Anthony Richardson. We finally get this guy who's becoming a really good player. We sign them to a big contract. His body falls apart. You know, we've had this great running back,

but we're not good enough to take advantage of his skills because our defense always has issues. So we get in passing situations. I don't know. There's just, it's just never ending with Indy right now. Cincinnati at Pittsburgh. You got to love a good AFC North early season matchup, even if the Pittsburgh Steelers, to me,

of all the teams that people thought could be just a credible football team has been the most unwatchable team in the league. Their offense is atrocious. Anyone that took D.K. Meckaff on their fantasy team, any Pittsburgh Steeler fan that is forced to watch this guy, he's been an abomination this season. Pittsburgh cannot run the ball. And Mike McCarthy is inclined to pass.

Mike McCarthy likes throwing the ball. I know he made the comments back in Dallas like, we're going to run the ball. Like, Mike, I've watched you, coach. You're like Andy and Sean McVeigh. Even Andy finally was like, I got to change. Kenneth Walker, here's another handoff. Emma Johnson, here's another handoff.

Mike McCarthy wants to call passes. I mean, he's got 42-year-old quarterback, like 25 attempts in the first half of a game that's not even that out of reach. So even if they tried to run the ball, that's why Cincinnati landed Dexter Lawrence. Through two weeks, the Buccaneers, or excuse me,

The Texans ran for 60 yards, and the bucks in week one ran for 89. But 30 of those came from Baker Mayfield. So, Rogers ain't running. So if you just look at the running backs, you're talking basically 60 yards. So 60 yards back-to-back weeks from the running backs. You're not running on this team. So this is why I like Cincinnati, because I was like, their defense is going to be better. Now Burrow has by no means been perfect through two weeks.

Who knows with his back tightness, if that's played a part. He was, he threw a pick six week one. Last week they were just, they couldn't get into a rhythm until they finally did. And he hit that big play and then they kind of settled down a little bit. But I just, Pittsburgh's a big home dog. And historically, this is where you hammered Tomlin. I don't know. I mean, 42-year-old Aaron Rogers, like all of a sudden, D.K. Metcalf is going to start making

place. All of a sudden they're going to be able to run for 100 yards on a team that doesn't allow teams to rush on them. I know it's a small sample size, but I think you've got to feel pretty good about Cincinnati's front and their run defense. And I think you got to feel pretty bad because this goes back to last year, like, Steelers running situation is abysmal. And then you got to factor in like, Rogers does look old. And I'm not a Rogers hater at all. I think he's one of the best players I've ever seen. He does not resemble that human being at all right now. And even he's acknowledged it.

So, Pittsburgh loses this thing. Like, all of a sudden you go, yeah, I don't know, I don't think they're going to make less. Because as the season goes and the weather changes,

it's like, well, Aaron's going to get less mobile. He's going to want less contact. And that's when you have to be able to run the ball. So to me, the only way I see Cincinnati not winning this game is like, it's going to have to be one of those banana stealers defense do crazy shit. Fumble six, maybe a pick six.

The defense might need to get them 10 plus points. Because it's hard to have any faith right now. You know, they just kind of have a personnel issue. They just, I don't know, you would have thought with the way they talked it up, how much Aaron loved D.K. And listen, DK has made enough plays for him last year. Something just feels off. I don't know.

And then last but not least, New England at Jackson. I didn't realize because I didn't have the audio on. I look up and, you know, Liam Cohen gets skinnier by the week. You talk about a guy. Just whatever GLP won he's on, he looks fantastic. He's pulling it off. He looks swaggy in his outfits. He was just screaming at the ref and there was a penalty.

I didn't quite understand what's going on. He got flagged for an unsportsman like. Jacksonville was in complete control of that game. For basically the four-quarter game in 2025 and the first two quarters of this game, they had dominated the Broncos for like basically 90 straight minutes. And then it just unraveled when Taylor Lawrence or Trevor Lawrence through that interception. And then the momentum completely shifted and the rest was history.

But like, you know, and the other thing with Jacksonville is the Travis Hunter, Brian Thomas is just not a reliable player. Thank God, Parker Washington's on the team. And Travis Hunter just doesn't really play. I think he played like less than half the snaps. I wrote it down a couple days ago. It was like 60% of the defensive snaps and 15% of the...

It's just an experiment that's not working. Who could have seen this coming? I don't know anyone that's ever watched the NFL. The greatest players in the history of the sport. Dion, full-time corner, a couple deep shots on offense. Like, there's no such thing as a dual player. It does not exist in the pros.

It exists in high school. Travis was even outlier in college. No one had ever quite done what he did. But this, you got to pick a lane and then try to master that lane. Because, you know, you're going up against this week. If you're a wide receiver, Christian Gonzalez is going up against. It's like, well, Christian Gonzalez just focuses on offense. You know, the offensive player he's going up against.

All he cares about is his technique, playing DB. Just like, you know, Romeo Dobbs or Kyle Williams or whoever the wide receivers are. All they care about is running routes. It's all they focus on. What coverage is I'm going against? How to get open? how to use leverage. You know, what to do against this look,

what to do against that look. And I just think the way they've attacked this Travis Hunter thing, one, they clearly regret the pick. And two, he was never going to be able to go both ways. It's just impossible in the NFL. So to me, obviously, Drake Mays under a little scrutiny, hasn't played as well. AJ Brown's out for a while.

Their defense is pretty good, though. But Jacksonville's defense is pretty good. I mean, this is, this is going to be a physical-ass game. Now, we'll see, like, Miami, Jacksonville, the heat of Florida, still cranking how that impacts both these two teams. But that's a big game. I think Jacksonville's pretty good. I think Jacksonville's pretty good. And if they were to win, like, you got a multiple game lead on whoever Houston or Indy loses that game.

I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday, and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark 30. No way. You have to come to the last bookstore, though. Kim Cottrell is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday.

A panel of Eurovision participants. And we do a little Halloween sometimes. Does the Pope dress up? He winks on Halloween. He gets right up next to the microphone. I hear you can almost hear the eyelashes hit each other. You never seen Italy so quiet. as when the Pope gets up to wink on Halloween.

I said last week, if James Winston starts, I have to go against them. It's just a hard and fast strategy. When James plays, I will take the opponent. Whether that team is the Kansas Sea Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills, the LA Rams or the Tennessee Titans. And this games in New York, if James has taken snaps, I've just, I got to take the Titans.

And if you go to Polymarket and you take the New York Giants to not win by two and a half points, I just wrote down $250. Pace 546. I like the Titans. I think the Titans, and I'd also argue if Robert Sala,

like if you can't beat James Winston. Brian Burns got banged up in that game, who's obviously one of their better players. Andrew Thomas got hurt. They had some injuries when most of us kind of stop paying attention. I mean, I came in here to record a podcast like seven minutes left and turned off the game because we started recording. By that, they lost like multiple players, good players.

So Malik neighbors, he just gets injured often. All you got to do, you know, stack the box. Like Scataboo, love you, but you're not beating us. Sala said yesterday that, they were going to take Scataboo and then the Giants, a couple picks ahead, took them. That would have been cool to watch Scataboo with Kyle.

Even though Scataboo by this point in time probably would have had both legs amputated. I'm going to have a pretty simple strategy this week. Is Seattle, I'm taking them to win by seven and a half points. I think this has like 30 to 9, 30 to 6 written all over it. Marriota's a great guy. not very good at football.

Not very good of football. And this team's not that very good of football. Once you lose your star quarterback, there's just a lifelessness, and this goes with the Giants too. To me, that just permeates throughout the whole building. It's just like, we don't have a chance.

And I think you're going to see it. It's going to be evident with the Giants. I think it's going to be evident with Washington. There's nothing you can do. And the difference is like, obviously Harbaugh is trying. You know, Dan Quinn's like, the unemployment line is right around the corner. And last but not least, same strategy that I'm going with Seattle.

Chiefs to win by 10 and a half points. $100 plays $193. I think you go heavy on that. I do think you are going to get a spirited effort out of Seattle and Kansas City this weekend. This is not one of those teams that like, I think the best part about this NFL season, is even that like, Chiefs have won at Super Bowls. Seattle's the defending Super Bowl champion.

It's clear why Buffalo's trying so hard. They have a lot to prove. Right? They've never been able to get over the hump. They want to get home field advantage. They want to reestablish themselves as a division champ. It's understandable. Right. I think all these teams, though,

even the Chiefs in Seattle are like playing with an edge. Like when you watch Seattle against Arizona, like that was a violent performance. to me the number one thing that has stood out in these two games against with the Chiefs, obviously the implementation of the running game and Kenneth Walker, but it's just a violent, it's just a violent brand of football. Like if you play the Chiefs right now, you better buckle up your chin strap because guys are getting crushed. Now, the mentality, if this was week nine and the Chiefs were, you know,

six and two or seven and one, you're playing a one and, seven Miami Dolphins team. I'd be like, these are human beings. I could see I have a bad week of practice. It's only week three. I think you've got to be careful as the season goes on of getting too aggressive with some of these massive, massive numbers. Right, as the, you know, Miami,

they're going to be games later in the season where it's probably like 16 points. There'll probably be a couple other teams involved there too as this plays out. And I think you've got to be careful in some of those situations once you get to like November. because you're like, well, the good team they're playing just had the worst week of practice.

Those guys went out boozing on Tuesday and Wednesday night. They're like playing some scrubs. But I think early in the season, there's just a natural level of respect you have for your opponent.
