How are we doing?
John Middilcoff, three-and-out podcast.
Hopefully you are doing well.
We've had some good football reaction podcast here from Sunday and the Monday night game.
We've got a lot going on today.
A little curveball.
My good buddy from growing up in Davis to calling 49er games, which he did in Australia.
Guy Haberman, I actually was roommates with him when I lived at Fresno State.
and he was hosting radio shows
and I was working at Fresno State football.
He went to Fresno State.
And now he's living in the Bay Area.
He's a young baby, 10-month-old.
So we kind of had babies right around the same time.
He officiated my wedding.
I've known him a long, long time.
He's been on the pod before.
And he just spent a week in Australia.
So we'll see if he's recovered.
And we will talk to him about all things football.
He knows college football really well.
Did Big Ten games for years.
Signetti, Dan Lannning, all those guys.
guys. And that'll be the game plan today. And we'll just keep humming along. So you guys know the drill.
If you listen on Collins feed, make sure you subscribe to three and out. We're up on the old Netflix.
You can watch me a guy on Netflix. Hit the alert button. We got content up on YouTube as well.
So go check it all out. And we'll just, we'll keep humming along. Let's dive into Guy.
Okay, back from the land down under. For those of you that don't know, this is a man that I've known for a long time.
Davis Senior High School, Fresno State Bulldogs.
He once got into an altercation.
Altercation would be strong,
but think Holly Rose,
Archesian, Pat Hill, Guy Haberman on the sideline.
I was the best man in his wedding.
He officiated my wedding,
and he called the Australian game.
So what a world.
What a world.
Guy Haberman, how are you doing, buddy?
Great to see you, brother.
Great.
Still recovering.
I hope the Niners are recovering faster
from the return from Australia than me.
It sounds like they are,
but I feel great.
It was a good time.
I could get used to 10.30 a.m.
Local kicks, actually.
Did not think I would say that,
but the sun was bright.
And then you had the whole day afterwards.
Well, as you also, what's Sammy?
10 months?
10 months?
Yep.
Just a little older than Jack.
So you spend, what, seven nights in a five-star hotel,
just by yourself in the hotel room?
We left on a Wednesday, got back on a Friday.
So like, in America, it was like nine days.
In Australia, it was seven days.
Did you ever get like thinking of crying just coming and just kind of jolt you?
Or after a couple days, like, oh, does that guy get used to this?
Put your feet up and nice and quiet.
A couple times I woke up in Australia at like 2 a.m. there and Sam was at just like having
his nap here.
So I like check in on him on the screen.
It's like, oh, he's nap and listen to his little, little music and then go back to
sleep. I did feel a little bit of guilt about it. Yeah, I just feel a little bit of guilt about it.
Then I come home and I can't sleep and he's waking up and I'm not helpful. So it's like really
it's like 11, 12 days that I'm actually not helping. We're talking about you in Australia because
your voice of the Niners. I mean, you know, interim voice of the Niners. Yeah, 49ers broadcaster.
We, I think a lot of 40, 49ers broadcaster. You, you called the game on radio. You, uh,
You traveled with the team.
I'm just kind of fascinated by Australia, just big picture.
I've been in New Zealand when I was 12 years old.
That was a long time ago.
Are there, like, do you just have ESPN, like normal television shows?
Do you have to use your iPad to watch, you know, for what you wanted to watch?
Obviously, the time zone.
Challenging.
Just give me the, your rundown non-football, just the Australian experience of the food, the TVs, the time.
Yeah.
The weather, was it cold, was hot?
It was kind of confused.
Yeah, it was end of their winter.
So it was great walking weather.
Like, you know, you get out, it's crisp.
You get going a little bit and it feels perfect.
So it was like that.
It rained one day, but like briefly.
And then, you know, you walk through it, it was fine.
Kind of like those Midwestern rains where it's like, it just rains and it's done.
Though food was great.
It's, to me, it's a lot.
It reminded me a lot of Philadelphia of Chicago.
People compared it a lot to London.
I've never been to London.
Have you been to London?
But people compared it to London.
San Francisco, like all those cities to me, it had like,
some of the old churches that are in great shape like Philly.
It had a lot of architecture that was very modern like Chicago.
It was very walkable like San Francisco.
A lot of the same like, oh, what's a good, you ask somebody, what's a good restaurant?
They're like, oh, go to this new Thai place, this new French place, this new rooftop bar.
Like the food you wouldn't know any different for the most part.
They are very proud of their coffee.
They have a lot of it like espresso shops every like three on every block.
The main thing, the biggest.
difference really is the driving on the other side of the road, which I didn't drive, but where it really
messes with you is when you're walking. And you are just, you realize how hardwired you are to step
off a curb and look left. And left is wrong, right? You need to look right because the car is coming
from the right. And that I never got used to it. And I thought like several times, like, I'm looking
the wrong direction. And you think like, I'll just look the opposite way, but that messes with you.
TV, uh, let's see, we had the, the, the Seahawks game was on TV. A bunch of the college games.
We're not on TV.
I don't know.
Somebody turned it on for me.
Got you.
There is like you do have ESPN and you have Fox, but it's like Fox footy.
So it's like Australian rules football and there's like a lot of cricket.
So it's not the, I think ESPN was the same.
If there was a college game on ESPN, I could watch it because I remember I watched Cal.
But like a lot of the other games I couldn't watch.
And then the streaming doesn't quite work because YouTube TV doesn't work there because it's geo-fenced or something.
So it was tough watching college football.
So you couldn't stream like your streaming services or Netflix.
Not all of them.
I used the VPN for Peacock so I could watch any college game that was on NBC.
Like the Apple Cup.
I watched Washington, Washington State.
But yeah, it was challenging.
It was not great.
But it's like coming up at nine, Greg Norman's greatest highlights.
Coming up at 10, the All Blacks 1997 championship.
So you might know the answer to this because I asked the guy like,
who's the greatest Australian golfer?
And they're like, well, Greg Norman.
Like, okay.
And then they were like, well, there's this other guy who won like six British opens,
but didn't play in the U.S. a lot.
They were like, you know, because the boat ride was long.
I was like, well, like, yeah, it took two weeks.
He didn't play in the U.S. much.
But he won six British opens.
It's like, oh, my God.
How long's the boat ride from Australia to get to the U.K.?
They said it was too.
Oh, to the UK?
I don't know.
I don't know.
This I said, I was ended up watching the NFL,
the Seahawks game.
I sat next to a guy's name's Cliff Riley.
He's 99 years old.
He was in World War II and in Korea.
And was like an old Australian football.
He was about to go play nine holes of golf.
And he goes, this is the most American football I've ever watched in my life.
It was like he'd watched two minutes of the Seahawks game.
He's like there's a lot of stopping because their football doesn't stop.
Like it's crazy.
I watch some of their stuff.
It's awesome.
Like it just goes and goes and goes.
Is that like rugby meets soccer?
Is that what you consider it through the uprights?
then that's worth six.
And then if you go outside the uprights to the outer uprights,
it's worth one.
But that's why you saw the referees do the little symbol for the field.
Yeah.
I was Toriko mentioned that?
Was Torrico?
Oh, no.
Ian Eagle or no Eagle or one of the Eagles.
Noah.
Do you see him walking around?
I saw him at the game.
He was standing the opening shot.
I mean, Luke Keele is a first ballot hall of fame middle linebacker.
who's also, you know, some linebackers are,
Ray Lewis, I think, 511, 6 feet,
not even 6 feet, Shade Under.
Luke Eakley's legitimate, like 6'4, right?
Did you see him walking around?
I didn't see him in person, no, but I did see Noah.
He is huge.
Yeah, so they didn't have him on a stool,
so when they come to the shot,
he's at like his, you know, his rip.
There's only so much you can do.
You got to lean on the desk.
Sometimes you do a desk lean,
and that somehow works it.
but I didn't see Luke.
I was hoping to see Luke.
I mean, Fred's tall.
Fred Warner is a tall middle lineback.
I don't think he's not six four,
but some of those dudes are just,
some of the Australian footy guys are big too.
Yeah, I saw some Grant Cohen.
He's pretty entertaining on the seven-day trip
going to different things.
He became a slender.
I mean, the Grant put on a performance.
You had David Lombardi getting into it
with the Rams president,
which like, was that a subtle,
If you're the Niners, you have that guy, and I get he's making fun of Lombardi, which we all can do about some of his tweets.
But he's also in a weird way taking a shot at Purdy.
I'm like, what are you doing?
Yeah, bringing Purdy.
The whole thing with them getting a slow, you know, there, you guys were there forever.
Forever.
It's like, I don't give the guys that much credit.
They're bored just kind of going around early.
They weren't really doing like the ambassadorship as the week went on.
But they kind of got a lot of credit for like carrying the day.
It's like, well, yeah, they were just walking around and going.
and stuff, but the Rams weren't doing that.
I had, and, sorry, I'll let you finish.
And just like the way that whole week played out, did you feel, like, were you going to
practice every day?
Yeah, I went to practice.
We got there.
They did a walk through.
There were a bunch of kids there.
You're right.
The players aren't going out doing the watch parties and the, you know, the pom-pom stuff
and all that.
But to me, they're doing enough.
Like, they go out on an off night.
They'd go out.
Or, like, you'd see a guy walking around if they had some free time, not that I had a ton.
You never saw Kyle.
outside of the hotel.
But then they would interact with the media.
Like to me, it was very super-boli.
And like they would, you know, the guys would do media sessions every day.
And so they'd hear the questions from an Australian.
And, you know, the questions were different.
Kind of super-bolly questions like big picture.
What's it mean to be here?
You'd hear the accent.
I did think it wasn't just about sleep.
It wasn't just about hydration.
It wasn't just even about like we don't talk about in pro sports.
You know this.
Like we don't talk about.
I guess the Eagles used to go away to camp for a week or two and like stay in dorms or whatever.
But like that stuff doesn't really happen in pro sports.
You just all spend a week together.
It's rare.
We don't talk about team building really in college sports anymore because those teams are kind of built at the last second.
But I did think there was like some, I don't know how you quantify it value for these guys,
just spending a week together where it's just them all together in the hotel on the boss, on the plane, on the boss, on the boss, like doing all that stuff.
And I did think by the time the game rolled around,
the Niders didn't practice in that stadium,
like neither team practiced in that stadium before the game.
But I think everyone would think probably,
they'd been by the stadium on the bus.
Like I bet everything just felt a little familiar to them
in a way that I just imagined myself arriving the day before.
Like everything would feel so unfamiliar.
And like I think things probably felt a little more familiar to them.
And that's worth something.
I don't know how many points you put on the point spread for that.
But I think just feeling like I've been,
in this place and I kind of get it is worth something.
And, you know, they didn't do a ton, but they did enough.
I thought to like kind of feel like they knew they were in Australia, right?
It was not like, oh, we could be in any country right now.
They knew they were in Australia.
Well, before we dive into just like how it played out and moving forward what looks like,
you mentioned this to me because my theory was, I think they're going to do this every year
moving forward.
And there's a multiple year deal.
Like, this is happening again next year.
two more Australia.
I don't know if it's next year,
but they have at least two more Australia games.
Now, it's three years in a row,
the league has started right,
with an international game week one.
Yeah, Brazil.
And you go much farther than,
you can go much farther because it's like a built-in time, built.
To me, Australia clearly, I know it for more golf.
And my dad used to go to New Zealand.
So it's like I, I, the Australian rug,
or I mean, New Zealand was, I guess, the all blacks.
I don't know who the Australian top team is.
but like they clearly love sports, right?
But football is so dramatically different
because like you said, the footy or what's it?
Is the AFL?
Fudian football league, yeah.
It's 80 minutes, but there's no,
someone asked me, someone DM me from Australia.
They're like, we're not used to the breaks.
Yeah.
You know, so what do you guys in America do during the breaks?
I'm like, I don't know, just take a leak.
Snacks, yeah, phone, just kind of sit there
and just talk if you're,
watch it was, you talk about the game.
I don't know.
It's just, you don't even think about it.
You do not think about it, right?
It's just, you're, the football flow, I mean, we're a football country.
You're just used to it.
And, you know, World Cup was happening.
Hell, we even, what Ford Fox do.
Water breaks, you know, we like our advertisers.
I just think that Australia sure looked, even Kyle mentioned, it was sold out and packed
before they even kicked off.
He's like, that's not normal.
Yeah.
Like, during warmups.
So it's, is this something like, could they do this every single year?
Like, was it cool enough?
You've been in a million stadiums in your life, college, and pro.
Sure seemed like it worked on TV.
Yeah, it did.
I watched it back and it looked like it worked on TV.
It felt on TV like it felt there.
And like I said, have you been to a Super Bowl game?
I've been to Super Bowl weeks.
I've never been to a Super Bowl game.
I went to the one Payton, the Cam Newton Payton Manning game here.
At Levi's.
Yeah.
In 16.
Not a great game.
But it was.
No, pretty terrible.
Pretty terrible.
It felt to me like I would want a Super Bowl to feel.
Like the flyover, multiple anthems, everybody, 100,000 people singing the Australian National Anthem.
I didn't know how many people were locals.
And people bought tickets from 38 different countries.
But once the whole stadium singing the Australian National Anthem, that kind of tells you like where most people are from.
But they have F1.
They have an F1 event there every year.
They have the Australian Open.
They have a tennis major there every year,
which is played not far from where the,
the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the,
labor court is not, is, like, across the street from where the Niners practice.
They have, like, all these athletic facilities right next to each other.
They, they're very proud of their cricket and their footy.
They're going to have, not in Melbourne, but they're going to have Olympics in 2032, Brisbane.
Right?
So, like, yeah, between F1 every year, a U.S., excuse me, a tennis major every year.
year.
Like I think they feel like they're a big sport town.
And it feels like it.
Like the stadium has 100,000 people that has 600 parking spots.
So it is a, you know, it's a stadium built for public transit and for people walking.
It's just built for fun.
Like it's surrounded by grass.
So you can do all kinds of fan events.
You can, like it's, it's really cool.
They got great tram and train system.
And I think the way the NFL views it, I hadn't talked about this probably since high school,
but they're talking about the, uh, the, uh, Asia Pacific.
Pacific region. Like this is the gateway to the Asia Pacific region. So they feel like they're getting people coming to this game from that region that would go to a game in another, you know, in America. So I guess the question's like, where could they go next? But yeah, they're, they're, they have the Seahawks have rights there. The Raiders have rights there. The Rams have rights there. There's a Seahawks bar. Like I walked by a bar that was just a Seahawks bar. Did not see a Raider bar, but did see one Raider logo and two Raider fans.
So, like, there are people that get it, you know, I think from like a fantasy.
I'm sure they play fantasy football.
But they're into it.
Like, and then I just felt like the Niners, they felt seen.
Like, I think the people of Melbourne felt like they were, they were given their due.
And that like their town wasn't just used, but like they were the hosts.
So it was really positive.
We interviewed Godell.
We interviewed Goodell before.
the game. Like, he was fart up about it.
He thought it was a big success. You talked
to him? Yeah, we interviewed Goodell before the game.
Listen to this. So, Tim Ryan,
John knows Tim Ryan. Tim Ryan,
many of you may remember, like, he did Fox Forever. I think he's one of the best
analyst period of football. He's the Niners radio analyst.
The day before, they're like,
you guys going to talk to Roger. I'm like, Tim,
T. Rock is whatever calls T. He's massive man.
Like, T. Rock, you know Roger? He's like, oh, yeah, bro.
I was there when he birdied, his first birdie at
Cyprus, like Roger joined Cyprus.
Somehow Tim Ryan's in his forcum, plays with him.
Tim played for the Bears, played at USC all-American.
He's a big time, too.
I work out with a guy who's good, from San Jose,
who's good friends with him.
I think they grew up together and says,
we were talking about Tim Ryan, I don't know,
within the last couple of months.
He said Tim Ryan started as a true freshman at USC
back in the day when it was unheard of,
to do stuff like that.
Like, this guy was, you know, a blue chipper.
but he is better looking.
How old do you think he is now?
Mid-50s?
I mean, he looks like a Hollywood actor.
You know, he's kind of got like a Howie Long.
He wasn't a player, Howie Long is.
But just in terms of how, it's like,
you're not supposed to be that good looking that big,
that just that much man as you age.
He's got just incredible hair.
Let me tell you about our new friends

When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months.
I survived and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them.
I'm Elizabeth Smart and these are the survivor.
I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything.
Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable.
I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me.
I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming.
They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced.
but these aren't stories about what's taken from them.
There's stories about what it takes to make it out alive.

Yeah, it's reading.
It's called reading.
So we don't like to use that word anymore.
Okay.
A panel of New Yorker cartoonists.
Have you guys done Terry Gross's Peloton class?
No!
I've been dying too.
I'm so sorry.
I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland

That's crazy.
I went to the Wonderland Bookstore.

No way.
You have to come to the last bookstore, though.

No, we just were down on the field with them.
It was cool.
Off the record or like an actual interview?
No, we recorded the interview.
He was doing a bunch of like Australian media too.
He was having, he was having a great time.
Do you think like, because when you're there, sometimes it's like, this happens a lot in
golf. You know, like the
AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am.
You're like, this tournament's like, if you're just watching
on TV, like, what's the point of this? Then if you go
to the event, you're like, God, this event's sweet.
When you're at the event, sometimes
event can feel really important.
And then you read about things like,
why are we doing this? Or they're not as many
people watch, but when you're there, you're like, this is incredible.
Obviously, these international events,
like, they're never looking back.
And clearly, if you're selling out
100,000 people in Australia,
they set the Niners in the fucking
Rams. They're not sending the Jags and the Cardinals. Actually, the Jags are actually good now
and the Cardinals big win. So that's a needed shot. But that's an old, that's an old shot from when
Thursday night football started. You'd be like, oh, yeah, the Jags again. Brad Nestler.
Like this, you understand, like you have a different perspective on international play and the
international expansion having lived it for seven days. Well, the London games are weird, right?
Because a lot of times those games would be on at like 6.30 a.m. So it's easy to skip them. The
Mexico City games are on like usually a Sunday.
I think are we a Monday night?
No, we're a Sunday regular game.
Niners go to Mexico City this year to play the Vikings.
On Sunday night football?
No, I think it's a Sunday.
I could be wrong about that.
Let me check.
I think it's just a regular Sunday game.
Those used to be like a Sunday night.
Oh, it is Sunday night.
Yeah, it's Sunday night.
So we go to, we go to Dallas and then just stay in Colorado Springs for a week
and then go to Mexico City.
But to answer your question, what's funny is it feels like I saw a
family walking down the street the day before the game.
A dad, three kids, all in a different jersey,
like Justin Jefferson, Joe Burrow.
That's a thing that's like they show the stands.
It's like, are they handing these out?
No, no, no.
I think these people just get everybody, like,
I'm a fan of a team or a player.
Here's my one shot to go to a game.
I'm wearing my jersey.
Because I heard that's what it's like in London a lot too.
It's like when you go, it's not just like,
Niners fans or Rams fans.
It's just like, I'm a football fan.
This is my one shot to see a game.
But I'm wearing my squad.
So that's what happens.
See, I assume that they found people that were going to the game
and they have like, here's a T.J. Watt jersey.
Here's a CD-Lam jersey.
You know, I think.
You don't think that happens.
No.
Here's a Drake May jersey.
Here's a Baker Mayfield jersey.
Because I remember, like, if you think back to being eight or nine or ten, you, like,
I didn't just wear, I had a Montana.
I had a young, but I also had a Randall Cunningham and a Dan Marino.
Like, I think that's a lot of people.
Like, the world's fans are just.
Yeah, you were eight.
Some of these people they're showing are 50-year-old.
Yeah.
But they might as well be eight when it comes to football.
Like they haven't been to an NFL game before.
They haven't really been watching it that long, right?
Like they don't have deep roots.
Their dad wasn't an Eagles fan or a Bill's fan.
You know what I'm saying?
I just think like these jerseys are cool.
They just star players, Mahomes.
No, I don't think they're giving them out.
I think these are just like, I'm a football fan and I'm going to a game.
And I saw this family.
I felt like I was at the Pro Bowl.
Like they just, everyone's wearing their jerseys.
And you can tell, like they don't exactly know when to cheer always.
there's this video that's playing on the video board before the game.
Like, well, four three defense is when there's four downline.
It's like trying to teach the game to people.
It's like, just tell them to like third down and get loud.
But they don't like a touchdown's cool, you know, like and they go crazy for that.
And they were singing songs, like all the songs they were singing.
And they start throwing the paper airplanes.
Like it was, it was really cool.
So I, and I thought did you feel like that came through on the TV?
I felt like it did when I watched it back.
Yeah, I mean, it definitely felt it just popped.
You're right.
It had a Super Bowl.
It had a, you know, bowl games that were cool.
I don't know.
It had a unique event.
And it was, I've always, now part of it, like you said, we're on the West Coast, the morning, any 6.30 a.m. kickoff.
And it's historically always felt like the worst teams or bad teams going over.
It's just awful game.
It's an easy one to skip.
Obviously, prime time.
There was a vibe in that stadium.
I don't think I've seen not I guess there's been the Brazil game they've had other night games
Mexico City night game I did the Niners play a Monday night football game on Monday night on Mexico City
years years year like a long time ago right yeah with it like first couple years of Kyle I think
oh yeah the Rams and Chiefs were supposed to go over that one year and the field was really shitty
and they went to the Coliseum like if it's prime time Monday night football or Sunday night football
it does feel cool but most of the like I associate London was 630 a.m.
kickoff. I associate Brazil,
Australia, Mexico,
prime time. And those feel sweet. I mean, that Mexico,
remember the Mexico World Cup game? Yes, I do.
Whoever, they were playing,
who were they playing? Who were they playing?
Was it Argentina?
I think they played, they lost England, right?
Mexico lost to England.
Oh, you're talking to them. Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I'm talking to the World Cup game. Mexico had like
back-to-back, like sweet 16th, elite games.
It's like, this feels like LSU at night right now.
This place is lit.
And Australia just had like a, I wouldn't say that, like that crazy.
But it did kind of have a vibe.
I wonder.
Just really far away.
I mean, you guys played.
What time did your alarm go off?
Well, I did probably like five.
But I was waking up at 4.30 anyway.
I thought to your point that 10.30 a.m. would be a problem.
I thought it'd be like, uh, this does not feel right.
And it felt fine.
Maybe because the sun was out.
Like the sun was blaring from the time we got to the field, basically.
So maybe that's why I felt that way.
but I thought 10.30 a.m. would feel weird.
You know, they pray.
Everyone's like, no, we practice at 10.30.
It'll be fine.
But I still thought it'd be weird, but it wasn't.
At least not for the nine.
It was weird for, I mean, the Rams.
I mean, it was just an all time.
So Tim Kawakami, who covers the Niners has a kind of things like the Rams kind of punted on the game.
Do you think that?
Or do you think they just thought we're doing this is, we think we're doing it the right way.
There's no playbook.
We've done it for London.
I just worked.
I truly believe that they sent those like.
a, you know, a pro scout, a training staff guy, like different iterations with whoops on.
They're like, ah, look at them.
They're fine, which maybe one of the guys they had going like a 10-mile run around the city,
just see what his body was like.
I would imagine one of the guys they sent.
They had some sort of physical activity involved because it was just me and you.
It was like, you're going there.
Yeah, I'm just going to go get one of these sweet coffees to eat a croissant.
Like, what do you?
You know, I, I, yeah, I just think that, uh, they were told they were playing there.
Like all these internet, like, you don't get to choose whether you're international or every year, right?
You're told you're one international team.
So clearly no one wants to do it, right?
The coaches.
No one's fine.
Every coach.
No coach is volunteering.
Um, I, I, I, yeah, I mean, I, I, I truly believe they thought that was the,
the best. And which is crazy. Do you see Jordan Milata was asked about it last week? He's like,
that's nuts. John McEnroe's like, yeah, I played over there 40 times or I've been over there 40 times.
That's insane. You could make the argument that Kyle need to go that long. But if you're going to
go for the whole week, you don't want to go in the middle of the week because you lose a day.
Also being there three days is when I think if they go back next, if they go back next year,
both teams are going to go for seven days, which is great for the league. That's where I think
the league.
Everyone's just going to copy the Niners now.
So if you're the league, you just go back to Australia.
You have both teams there for seven days.
That is a lock.
Yeah.
A lock.
Yeah, I don't know if they can quite mandate it,
but I think Roger Goodell will,
will suggest strongly,
especially now that it looked the way it looked.
And by the way, like the Niners and Rams have played a lot of games.
The Niners have won seven of eight away from home against the Rams.
Like these two teams,
sometimes one of them beats the other one,
28 to 7.
Like it has happened, right?
Like, that game could have happened at SO-Fi.
but yeah it just it felt like the result of that game if that game had been 2724 I don't know how you pick but if it was going to be a blowout one way or the other that teams the way they did it was going to be what gets copied was it like traveling with the team like you get your own seat you know like a first class seat it was double decker pulling there's a big playing the a3 380 which is going out of out of commission soon they're going to stop flying the
this thing in a couple of years, I think.
So a lot of the players, like the big seats are up on the top on the second level.
The coaches are up there.
Kyle said he had to divvy up.
There's not like enough lay flats for everybody.
So he divv it them up based on like seniority of starters, basically.
And so, well, he started with size, the biggest starters, I think.
And pride to give one to Mike Evans because Mike said he came here because he heard they have good travel.
And then we normally don't fly in a double-decker,
but you just take more people on a plane like this.
So for this flight, it's on the bottom row,
it's three by four by three across, right?
So like one person had three on the window,
one person had four in the middle,
one person had three on the next window.
So we each got our own row.
So you could lay down,
which makes a big difference,
like being able to just not being right next to somebody
on a 14-hour flight makes a big difference.
So you lay down that way.
When we fly normally,
it's a united plane that's simple,
similar like you don't need to lay down so each row usually it's like two people to a row so like in the middle Tim sits on the end we have two empty seats between us and then I sit on the other end and you sit down there's a little little card with like the meals although when you get on they usually if it's not a Sunday they give you you get chick filet when you get on to the plane no chick fillet on Sundays and then you can order order order order order food what you get on and the snack the unlimited snacks well they got chick filet
order or they got like airplane food to order depending on what the chef has cooked up on the
menu that day and the unlimited snacks is the problem like full size candy bars full you know chips
drinks ice cream sour pet I was like you need gummies like how about a pack of sour patch kids
I'm like no thank you dangerous but it's yeah it's pretty good I mean and the best part is like
leaving right after the game and when you leave right after the game there's a spread somebody has
catered the post game outside the locker room
room. And in Vegas, it's in and out, which is pretty good. The two preseason games, we've been to
Vegas. They do in and out after the game. So double doubles. Well, players get two double doubles each.
They only only give you one. Well, I mean, I can ask whatever I want, but I don't need two double
doubles. So what was a flight home? 18 hours? That was like 14. It wasn't bad.
Oh, that's not bad. No, the flight actually is not the bad part. You know, I think it's the,
it's the like not. Do you feel normal now a week later?
Is it a week later?
No, I got home Friday night.
It's Tuesday as we're talking.
I think the move in hindsight is like take a sleeping pill that first night to make sure you get through the night.
I think that's the key.
Make sure you sleep like 11 hours that night, which I did not.
So it's taking me a couple days, but I'm feeling good now.
So I mean, by the time people are canceled today's, well, today's Tuesday.
They had a Monday practice.
They canceled it.
They're off Tuesday.
So they'll be back Wednesday, kind of like a normal week if they had played on Sunday.
Do you think it canceled it because people were saying like,
We still don't feel right.
Well, I don't know.
They weren't going to do it.
They said they're not going to practice Monday.
And then for a minute they were going to practice Monday.
Then they canceled Monday.
So it could be, yeah, that Trent and Haberman,
Trent Williams and Haberman will go, it's like,
yeah, we don't feel like going.
Yeah.
We're going to go.
Okay.
You know, one thing, it's like you look around.
I mean, the Rams,
that was a devastating weekend because they look like,
they just lost.
So if they punt the game, okay, you just lose a home game to the 49ers.
you lose Miles Garrett, who one, to me, just looked physically a little fat.
Well, which makes sense he hasn't really been able to practice.
And again, fat's all relative.
Like when I say that, I just mean he just looked out of shape, just bodywise.
Now is going on IR with a knee.
So you're losing verse, who I googled it the other day.
First has never missed a game in his career.
So one thing, yeah, he's not Miles Garrett, the sack wise.
But every single week for two years, I think maybe he didn't start week one his rookie year.
From then on out, he never didn't start a game.
Very durable player.
This guy's now just gone.
We'll see if Aaron Donald plays this week against the Giants.
The Giants have a lot of momentum coming into this game.
I mean, they're feeling pretty good about themselves.
And here's the other thing.
Giants have a, like, they have a lot of pass rushers.
You kind of see it with Stafford.
You see it with Gough?
Like, they just don't move.
Sam Donald's got a pulled butt.
The Packers are in a free fall.
The Vikings don't have a quarterback.
back. The Bears defense, thank God they might have the greatest offense ever. Their defense is horrendous.
The South, they don't have a win. I mean, the NFC, like the AFC, it was like, oh yeah, the big boys are back.
Josh has never really left, but Lamar and Patrick are like, yeah, we're back. And Joe Burrell's like, yeah, my defense is now good.
We're back. Drake May, Bow, Bo Nix, shut the fuck up, go to the side, please. You know, the AFC is going to be
really hard. I mean, you're going against some all-time great players. The NFL, you're going against some all-time great players.
He's pretty wide open.
Now, we'll see these injuries play out,
but I just don't feel confident that Miles Garrett,
I think he's a total unknown all season.
Same with Sam.
Once you get in-season injury,
I think Sam, I saw Sam, not Sam, Matthew,
had a quote somewhere along the way
where he was basically like,
you know, I just got to be careful when I,
just like, got to make,
just be cognizant on my back when I pick my kids up.
And I was like, oh, right?
Like, it's just a constant management
for him. I don't think he's not her. It's just
he has to constantly be careful, which of course
he does. He's 37, 38 years old,
and he's been hit a million times.
But it just tells you like,
you're just walking a tightrope.
And that's why when people would ask me about the Niners,
be like, you know, can they have a chance? Like,
of course they have a chance. I think fans,
I left the Eagles out too.
You left the Eagles out. But they had 10 first downs.
I think you get so caught up on your own team,
like your own team's weaknesses. At least I'll speak for
the Niners. Like, you know,
There's little weak at safety defensive tackle as a whole.
Like, yeah, yeah.
I always said it like relative to college football where, you know, you'd watch a quarterback.
I'm like, God, I don't think we're any good a quarterback.
And then you realize, like, well, everybody hates their quarterback.
At the end of the year, like there's like four or five good quarterbacks in college football that people really like.
So everybody's got a thing in the NFC.
Like, the thing we don't talk about, I think the Seahawks are, I mean, Mike's obviously an excellent head coach,
but he's got a new offensive coordinator with Brian Flurry.
and the defending champs
and sometimes that's good
and sometimes it's hard
to be the defending champs.
So, I mean, I don't see...
They got a good thing.
I feel better about like that Seattle win.
That was pretty impressive.
The quarterback goes out on the first drive.
It was like a culture like we're the...
We might not win it again
and hell we might not win 14 games
but you better fucking believe we'll win a 10 or 11.
Whether David is playing quarterback,
no.
And we are going...
We're going to make you question your quarterback
for the next.
month, New England.
Because that's what everyone's like,
God, is this guy broken?
It's like, no, Mike,
and Mike is,
Mike's incredible.
I mean, that defense down the stretch
of that game was,
where the Rams,
it goes,
God,
they're dependent on a lot of weird,
and they,
they're,
listen,
they've been good and they were great last year,
but it's like Aaron Donald's just off the couch.
Miles Garrett,
you know,
is just going to show up and you just,
you never,
football's not like that.
It's not like that at all.
You know, in baseball, you bring Miles Garrett's like the equivalent.
I just trade for Aaron Judge.
Just plug him and play him.
If he's healthy, great.
Football can be weird.
It's like, well, is Miles Garrett the first guy in the building?
Is he like taking notes?
You watch the highlights from Seattle.
It's like, yeah, when the wide receiver meeting comes out,
Cooper Cup just goes to the quarterback room.
And Sam's like, yeah, I better know my stuff because he knows more than me.
It's like, you could, like they got a culture there.
Where the Rams got a little, it's like a little Darry morey to them.
Like, nothing matters.
We'll just figure it out.
I was like, I don't know.
We'll see.
Andy's had that at times over his career in Philly, and it can burn you,
no matter how great of a coach you are.
And then you're the heavy haven't really do that.
And then you're the heavy favorites and you're getting a lot of attention.
But heavy favorites.
It looked like he regretted that.
Like the moment he sat down, he's like,
I wish I would have told my PR guy to know on this one.
I mean, he's basically mad.
Yeah.
You saw that clip?
Where he's like, yeah, we had a bad practice.
I'm not really here.
Yeah, I feel bad for you doing this interview, John.
Feinstein.
How did you,
did you take that as like,
he's trying to show how much he cares
or like,
God, he's like speaking it out loud.
I think he's speaking it out loud.
Yeah, I think he's talking his thoughts out loud.
I don't want to explain why I'm being an asshole.
But I'm not because I'm,
you know, he's not.
He's too much of a pro to really be a jerk about it.
But,
yeah,
it's just,
I don't know,
man.
You've said it.
You have said this for years,
what you just said plug and play.
Like,
it's not a plug and play league.
Because we used to talk about free agency all the time.
And, you know, I mean, you were there for the dream team and like in Philly.
And it was just like it's just, it's the same every year.
Now, I'm not counting the Rams out.
But like you just can't crown teams before the season.
Now, also week one's weird, right?
Like that's the other part of it.
Week one is very weird.
But like historically for the Niners, it's not like they just kind of look.
I feel like the Niners generally look like the Niners look,
whether it's week one or week 12, Kyle's Niners.
And it was a divisional game.
Like the Niners, as weird as last year was,
almost had a chance to be the one seat last year
because they beat the Seahawks a week one.
They played them.
I shouldn't say almost.
The week 18 game was not almost,
like the Seahawks dominated them.
But, you know, they're going to play Arizona now.
And it'll be interesting.
Like, do they get, is Sam Darnold back by the time that the Niners play them?
They play three games in a row at home.
So week five, they go to Seattle.
Like, is Darnold back?
You just given them a win against Halfley?
I'm not giving them wins.
I'm just saying you play Seattle.
You know, is Darnold.
back.
Yeah.
I mean, I'm not giving a win against Halfley.
I'm not giving him a win against LaFour.
We once were at practice and there's this skinny, unassuming little white guy with the DBs.
And we both kind of looked at each other and were like, who is this cloud?
Like, what is this?
What is this?
What is this?
No, what did you say?
I remember saying to you like, is Richard Sherman really listening to that guy?
Richard Sherman loves him.
Yeah, which is her most of them.
Kyle kept him from Chip Kelly's staff.
He went on to become Ohio State's defensive.
His career, you know, it's, he's really impressive.
I mean, I'm a, I'm a believer.
Absolutely.
I mean, once he went to Boston College, I was like, whoa.
Yeah, you just, you got to be very careful about judging coaches' looks, I think, in college or pro sometimes.
Because you can see a guy, I mean, what, Jeff Halfley at the time?
He looks like he's in a little, felt like he weighed 150 pounds.
and he's not very tall, and he's coaching the D.Bs.
It's like, what is?
And I, you just, you never know.
Now, you know, some of the Kyle's guys or McVeigh's guys,
they have a certain name,
so it's like, you don't discount a Kubiak or something.
Right.
But sometimes if you don't know the guy's name,
you're like, what?
You know, it's easy to see Robert Salter D'Amico
and be like, gosh, the guy looks at the coach, you know?
And then you see Halfley,
and all of a sudden he's the head coach gets a five-year,
you know, probably 30 million.
dollar deal with the Miami Dolphins.
Now, they're actively trying to lose.
You know, they have the youngest team in the league.
But, I mean, he's, the Packers are, I don't know how much you saw that game.
I mean, they are, they are unraveling.
There was like a loud contingent of like, LeFleger kind of in a little trouble, buddy.
And do you know what thought crossed my mind earlier today?
Someone forwarded me a sweet, like, little montage of Trevor Lawrence.
He was playing the Browns, but still, he looked, he looked pretty good.
And I was like, you know, if this was college, the conversation would be,
are the Green Bay Packers going to go get Liam Cohen?
Because the Green Bay Packers would be here, like LSU, Georgia, Ohio State,
like, they would go get Liam Cohen from the Jax.
Jacks fans are like, this is not.
I'm just speaking, historic brands.
If this was college, the conversation, if it hadn't started,
it would really be, like, the Packers should be all over there.
But if this was college, wouldn't the cons have more money than the Packers ownership?
Or no?
I'm just talking like the blue blood programs and stuff.
Yeah.
Maybe you say the NIL portal era.
And Liam would be like, I'd rather just, I have Trevor Lawrence here.
He's every bit as good, if not better than Jordan Love.
I'll just stay.
But that is a conversation that would, it still grows in college even when guys turn it down.
It just crossed my mind.
Like if you were Liam Cohen, in all things being equal, would you rather be the head?
Because I was thinking about this, you're just not going to.
get talked about that much
coaching that franchise. And there is
a chance he is
like not that much different to like Ben Johnson.
He has Trevor Lawrence. I don't know if you
just saw the highlight. I mean he looked like he looked
incredible. They look incredible.
I get there playing the Browns.
But it's like you just kind of fly
under the and this is the thing with LaFleur.
He's like 7640 and one.
But he's the coach
of the Green Bay Packers and starting to get weird and people are
not going to, it's just not going to get tolerated.
It's like the Cowboys DC. It's like
A guy better figure it out or he will get fired.
Especially when you think when people,
when you think you've got a quarterback, right?
You spend the whole off season,
people talking about Jordan Love.
He's a top eight guy.
He's a top 10 guy.
Like that also gets you in trouble if it doesn't work.
I thought you were going to say,
I am happy every time the Bengals win a game
because when I'm afraid of from a Niners perspective
is McVeigh trading,
is the Bengals bottoming out and McVeigh trading for Burrow at some point,
not like now, but like in the future.
They don't have the picks now, do they?
Well, no, I don't think they have the picks, no.
Yeah, I mean, didn't they just draft Ty Simpson?
Yeah, but I mean, I'm talking about in 2028, you know.
Yeah, yeah.
I mean, Stets and Ben, it's the backup quarterback, not Ty Simpson.
Which is kind of crazy to me.
Can I tell you about my friends at whatnot?
This is incredible.

When I was 14 years old,
I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months.
I survived, and I've spent my life exploring
how other people survive what should have destroyed them.
I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the survivor files.
I just remember this low, taunting voice
next to my ear saying, shut up.
I don't say anything.

What I try to do is faux journal.
I don't know.
Have you guys heard of faux journal?
Yeah, it's reading. It's called reading.
So we don't like to use that word anymore.
Okay.
A panel of New Yorker cartoonists.
Have you guys done Terry Gross's Peloton class?
No!
I've been dying too.
I'm so sorry.
I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland Bookstore on 14.
That's crazy.
I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark 30.
No way.
You have to come to the last bookstore, though.
Kim Cottrell is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday.
A panel of Eurovision participants.
And we do a little Halloween sometimes.
Does the Pope dress up?
He winks on Halloween.
It's right up next to the microphone.
I hear you can almost hear the eyelashes hit each other.
You never seen Italy so quiet as when the Pope gets up to wink on Halloween.

You know, you've done, I was talking to you about this before we hopped on.
This, the Sarkeesian Holly Row, this arch having to apologize for the AI video,
which, you know, the conversation becomes like, why do they even do these interviews?
Why do they even happen?
Like what?
But then there's also the side.
I saw, you know, some of the, before even the AI video, there was a large contingent, you know,
Sidney Sweeney throw her hat in the ring here, women,
and people are like, they are obligated,
where do you think the money comes from from ESPN?
It's like, I don't think it's like,
it just takes on a life of its own, the sideline stuff,
just in terms of the interview,
what they're obligated to do.
Does Sark, are they told before the game who's getting interviewed?
Is there just a natural flow when you,
with certain networks, when you talk?
Obviously in college, unlike the pros, you interviewed after the game.
But like the halftime thing, which clearly pissed off Sark.
Then he freaked out.
I wouldn't even say freak out.
It was just amped up, left.
Holly kind of threw a fit.
And the whole thing has now become like a, I mean, a pretty big story that Arch has to put out an apology
after the biggest moment of his life.
Usually they know.
Usually there's an agreement ahead of the game.
Like, we'll do the leading team first and then the trailing team at halftime.
Or we'll do the leading team coming.
off and the trailing team coming back out like after the second half clearly they were going to do
the leading coach rinday and then the trailing coach sark at the half and laura rutledge even said
like uh sark was waiting a long time and i knew on post game i'm like this is taking a while
and then when they got down to him and he stormed off my first thought was like i bet he's been
waiting a while i bet he'd been waiting and like i know as the sideline reporter you're like all right
I got coach. I got coach. He's right here. And coach is like, you know, like coming out of his
skin. You remember like Dan Lanning last year at Penn State. He did the interview, but he was like
on another planet. So that's my guess. I haven't seen anybody say how long Sark was waiting
while Holly Roe was there. The second time because he waited the first time. He waited the first time
and left. And Laura Rutledge even said like he was waiting a while like, hey, it's not his
fault. He was what we kept him waiting. Ideally, maybe you can record it while the other one's
live and then play it back, but that becomes complicated.
But so I don't know why.
Sometimes the camera takes a while to get there.
So like the interviewer is there and Sark is there.
And I don't know if this would happen, but the camera has to find them.
And that's sometimes going to be a challenge.
Because the Siler reporter is like, I see Sark makes it B-Lon for Sark.
But the camera guy's got to get there somehow with his camera.
There's students everywhere.
So a lot of times that's what actually slows you down.
You can start the interview and just shoot it from somewhere else from a different camera.
Like that's what-
Why wouldn't the camera guy just run out with the Sideline reporter?
Well, sometimes they're, yeah, I mean, ideally they're together and they go together.
But the silent porter can just move quicker, usually.
The camera's got the camera and someone with them with the cord, running the cord behind them.
That's my guess.
I don't know, but like sometimes Stark's going to be on the near side 30 by the tunnel.
It's like, yeah, but then that's not how it happens.
So maybe the silent reporter goes and grabs him at half midfield and then tries to walk with them.
So there's a lot of ways that can go sideways.
I do think like in a big game, I still like to hear from the winning coach.
I still think there's a value.
Totally.
You know, five out of ten times,
yeah,
five out of ten times it's whatever.
But five out of ten times,
it's like,
I've seen PJ Fleck in Minnesota's interviews are always great.
Harbaugh's always Harbaugh.
Have you met Jake?
He brings the next guy in.
He brings the next guy in.
Davo had the legendary bring your own guts.
Remember like early on in his run.
In those moments, you got it.
Like,
I still want it.
Because the coach is on another planet.
And I want to,
especially that game was up.
crazy comeback.
So,
yeah,
but,
I don't know what.
Biggest win of his life.
Biggest win.
It's the biggest win of Sark's life.
So,
I mean,
Sark,
everyone was shitting on him.
And he has to be thinking at half time,
it kind of crossed my mind of like,
God,
he went nine and three.
They're stroking these huge checks
for this roster,
which by all accounts,
they have the most expensive roster,
more in Oregon,
more in Ohio State.
He's making a ton.
The pressure,
this game's at home.
And a half time, it felt like they were going to lose 50 to 15 or something.
If 15, I don't even know if it was on the table, like 50 to 7.
I guess they had three.
So 50 to 6.
It could have got ugly.
We're talking like $55 million when people we talk about the biggest rosters, right?
Like that's the neighborhood we're talking about.
It's hard to confirm exactly all the numbers.
But did they say?
The chiefs left tackle last night, the kid from Indiana, the undrafted free agent.
His, you know, an undrafted free agent, it's just a, it's a set price, right?
There's no negotiating.
I think he's making, assuming he stays on the team the entire year, like less than $900,000.
I bet there's a pretty good chance there's not one starting offensive linemen for Sark that makes, makes, that doesn't make more than the chief starting left tackle on Monday football.
With probably a backup left tackle and make it more too, right?
100%.
Yeah.
So I would have liked, anyway.
I mean, I, yeah, I think for Arch too, like I've been a big arch guy.
I don't know if you were a big arch guy, uh, even last.
year. Like, I think Arsci's going to be. I'm running for the guy, the player.
You're not sure. I got to be fair. I mean, he seems like a great kid. He's,
he wants to root for him. But it's like, I just watch him. I don't, he doesn't look that good at
football. And even in that game, balls, because we're crapping on all these guys. And I would say
one thing's pretty consistent from J.J. McCarthy to Bryce Underwood,
mature in that game against Bryce Underwood. It's like, if you just accurately can't,
throw ball. Like, Mahomes was a little off last night, for sure. Rusty had some weird
passes. But he also just on a lot of layups, like the wheel route, which the Chiefs will hit
in his sleep, in the guy in stride. Like, the touch pass to him, his game is not as much power
anymore as it is. Like, you watch Josh Allen. He's really more, like, when he gets playing, I mean,
his game last night was average, but like, he's more of a touch player and a timing player.
And I just watch Arch. And again, he's young. He hasn't played that much football, but like,
I don't see that there's a lot of similarities with john mature and bryce underwood
now he did have some balls in that game that he got dropped and bounced off him as a
pick he had another guy in the end zone so it wasn't all his fault but you know he said I wouldn't
say he's the number one overall pick which I just see a lot I think I don't know if they're
like trying to suck up to the manning family or something I it's like guys I don't think they
care.
But I don't know.
There's just weird.
I mean, look at the all off season.
Had them like the number one pick in the draft.
You've done so much college football.
Most college players, I've been thinking about this for a couple years now.
If you play a position and you become Jeremiah Smith or Malachi Tony or elite players
at different positions, you can have an awful season the year you're going to go into the draft.
And if you reviewed as like the fifth pick, you end up going like 30 or you end up going 26.
Like the chiefs last night, Peter Woods from Clemson, he was like, coming into the year last year, Clemson, he's like, this guy can be a top five pick.
Awful year goes 28.
At quarterback is kind of the opposite.
It's like this guy's going to be really good.
Then you play bad, Nussmeier, go seventh round.
Drew Aller at one point in time after they had made the final four.
I was like, Drew Allen, this guy can really figure out top 10 pick.
people thought they were crazy for taking them in the third
and it can go the opposite way
Carson Beck, undraftable
has an incredible playoff run
ends up going in the third round.
Quarterback to me you kind of got
like you've got to produce and play well
and I don't
maybe his name would
I'm underestimating that with owners
but I would say based on his play right now
I mean I
not a top 10 pick
if you're trying to compare
to like the other sweet top 10
picks over the course of the last decade plus.
Yeah, I mean, he'll have, in theory, he has a playoff and you can make a lot of money,
right, in a playoff because you're playing two or three of the best defense.
A lot of runway left for sure.
In the country.
But if you don't, like, I think Cam Ward was a guy.
Cam Ward was an interesting case because he was like up before we went to Washington State,
then down, then like back up, then up up at Miami.
Because I think if he had come out the year before Miami, he was going to be like a third
round pick, people were saying, right?
out of Washington State
out of Washington State.
Yeah, before he transferred.
Which makes sense.
He like put his name in the draft,
but he was also in the transfer portal type thing.
Yeah.
And I think before he got to Washington State,
his stock was super high.
People were like this guy
because it was Eric Morris.
Incorpor.
Right?
No.
Was Eric Morris?
Eric Morris and the guy from,
there's a,
he had two OCs.
Eric Morris was like his head coach
and he had no C also.
But, you know,
but then he like was kind of inconsistent.
I just think for a quarterback, it's always like your last year.
What does your last year look like?
Who knows what we were talking about Trey Lance today?
Like if Trey Lance had transferred up before he got drafted to Oklahoma or something.
Well, I guess, sorry, I was thinking of Mateer.
Mateer and a coordinator went to Oklahoma.
And Eric Morris was also at one point, I think, Cam's OC or head coach or something like that.
There was like a bunch of crossover from those guys.
I want to say his major Apple White.
but it's uh it's it's something else is his OC went with him to Oklahoma yeah yeah yeah and it's
just but again like I don't think it's the play like some guys just aren't like material was horrendous
in that game and it wasn't he just misplays because he has no this was the trellance thing this is a lot
of j j jay mccarthy thing it's like when you just don't have touch like it is more important
to have touch that's what was so impressive like jackson dart sunday night it's like he a lot of
these guys have the physical skills, but like the touch plays, the giving a guy a chance,
occasionally hit them when they're covered.
It's like, ah, Jackson, all right, it's the best game he's ever played.
Like, what was that?
I know.
I remember, you remember a few years ago, I charted every 49ers training camp throw because
there was this like, Trey Lance for Sam Donald was a thing, and I was bored.
And it's true if you look at PFF, like the vast majority of throws, PFF grades
quarterbacks on a negative two and a half to positive two and a half scale.
And I think, I don't know exactly, but it's like two or two and a half.
Those are what they call big time throws.
And if you look at PFF under BTT, big time throws two years ago, like basically your leader
every year is going to have like 45 to 53 or somewhere in those range, big time throws.
So it's basically like three a game or the big time crazy throws.
The rest of the throws that really matter, most of them, are like the zero throws,
which are the layup throws that you're talking about.
And like the plus one throws that are just like the crossers where you hit the guy on the numbers.
and he's open.
It's nothing crazy.
Like I think the guys that really make a career,
it's why I think Brock,
really any starting quarterback,
I think most of these backups
can make the Matthew Stafford throw once.
Like, oh my God,
did you see that over the shoulder,
off his back foot,
split two guys?
But can you make the other throws
10 out of 10 times
or 10 out of 11 times
and then still make the big time throws?
That was eye-opening for me
when I saw that Matthew Stafford led the league
because you think Stafford is just like 10 times a game,
just boosh, boosier, Josh Allen.
Yeah, it's like two or three.
times a game. And then the rest of the time, they're just doing what they're supposed to do.
Now, that's an oversimplification, but to your point, because you're in third and four, third
and five, third and three way more than you realize by like week 10. Like in a game, you're like,
God, we've been in this, you know, position a couple times. But over the course of the season,
you're in it a lot. You know, if you're a good team. Like looking at the Eagles or the Broncos,
when you only get like nine or 10 first downs,
that's telling me two things.
One, you're not being very successful
on first and second down on a lot of drives.
And you're not having that many explosive plays
because you would have just a ton of first downs
if you're getting first downs on second down, right?
And then you're clearly not doing well on,
you know, not every drive is just going backwards.
So you're just not doing well on third and medium,
which a lot of times you're not running go routes
or post routes on third and fours.
A lot of times it's like a quick out, a wheel route.
And when you skip that or miss it,
it's like that adds up over the course of the year.
And Stafford, that's what was Stafford's last year.
He basically became a version of Peak Peyton Manning with a better arm.
Because he doesn't move, right?
But he's just dominant in terms of just where to go with the ball.
He didn't really turn the ball over last year, right?
He only threw, what, five picks?
42 touchdowns?
Maybe seven picks, whatever.
But like, I think it's a great point on first and second down.
I think I don't know this to be true.
I haven't looked at this step, but just thinking about it as you're talking.
I bet a big major, a large percentage of explosive plays come on second and short.
Like the Rams, that was one of their things last year.
Like on second and two, they're going to hit you because it's kind of a free play because you're going to pick it up.
You feel confident on third and two or maybe even fourth down depending on where you're on the field.
So if you can't get to second and short, then you're just going to have less explosive opportunities.
I do think like with Bo Necks.
I don't know, we haven't talked about Bo necks in a year probably.
I don't know where you have.
You do him in college?
Yeah.
And like one of the things with him coming out of college was just like all his throws
were around the line of scrimmage.
Yeah, he was completing a high percentage of throws,
but a lot of them were at the line of scrimmage or behind the line of scrimmage or
in front of the line of scrimmage.
You know, now I think they did a lot of that too.
His rookie year in Denver.
So like they knew how to make him hit the ground running.
I haven't looked at what is what is around the line of scrimmage.
That was last year or week one.
but like I do think you can kind of yeah it's if you're not taking shots on second and two
if you're not getting to second and short and you're not taking shots on second of two I bet
it's pretty hard to be explosive that'd be my guess like it's not coming on 37 I just think
maybe I'm crazy but I don't ever remember somewhat of Peyton stature just flipping the switch
and going CEO it's like I'm just CEO this year with it'd be one thing because I was saying
this last night, like if, let's say like a Kyle Shanahan or Sean McVey or Kevin O'Connell, a guy of
that, like ilk, had just had a disastrous year, had been fired, was just down and out. Maybe
something happened to his personal life, so it was unhirable as a head coach. Sean Payton's like,
you know what, I'm going to take a step back. It's like a big picture. I'm going to take a step
back. I'm going to hire one of the best OCs of the league, try to instill a little fire,
mix it up a little bit here. Like, oh, I, I, let's say Denver's coming off an underwhelming year.
I mean, they were a broken ankle away from being the Super Bowl
and they just elevate
and he's just standing there with his hands.
It was, I don't remember ever seeing anything quite like that
and a football with an offensive guy.
You know, McCarthy with Green Bay would give up play calling every once in a while.
But then he'd like take it right back
and it was always like a Philbin, random, older guy type.
It was clear.
Like this guy is viewed as like this shooting star.
Game one against Steve Spagnola.
The Tregman's like, yeah, he's won four Super Bowls
as a defensive coordinator.
I was like,
two of those with the chiefs
and the one with the Giants,
for sure they were defensive teams.
You know,
it's like,
it wasn't like they were Ben Johnson offense
those couple years with Mahomes.
That was,
and it felt like,
you know,
our kids are still so young,
but once they get maybe a year and a half,
two years,
you kind of like,
oh,
let him burn his little finger here.
You got to kind of teach him a little bit.
It's like,
Sean Payton's like,
I'm going to teach you a lesson here, kid.
I'm not,
coming in, but how long does that last?
I mean, they play the Jags this week.
Remember last year, the Jags beat the crap out of them in Denver.
Like, it's get weird.
They get weird fast.
If you take play calling duties from a guy, can he leave for another OC job?
If he's not actually the play caller, even though we see an O.C.
He's under a multi-year contract.
Yeah, let's say he's under a two-year contract as the offensive coordinator in title,
but then Peyton takes play-calling away.
And kind of sneaker keeps him in the building.
That's a great question.
I think you would probably let the guy leave, but you never say never.
I mean, look at the Browns.
They didn't give what's his name, the head coaching job.
And they were like adamant, he was under contract going to be their defensive coordinator.
Jim Schwartz, I'm not working with Todd Bunkin.
You know, it's like, you never say never.
I think if they stripped him, it used to happen to Sean Payton added stripped, I think,
back in the day with like Jim Fossil.
It happened to him when he was younger.
So I think in that Wickersham article, he was adamant.
it is not going to happen.
Like it's not happening.
Which is easy to say because I think,
I do think his heart's in the right.
Like I want this guy to do it.
You know, it's going to be the best.
But then you watch that.
Kenneth Walker had three less yards on the ground
than they had total yards of offense.
Yeah, if you think,
if you're watching the game thinking,
I would have called something different.
I would have called something different.
I would like to me,
that's what it's about.
It's not about what the box score said.
If you're watching the game,
Sean Payton going,
I would have called something different.
That's not what we talked about.
or you hear him on the headset.
Why would he just call the game then?
Yeah, yeah.
Well, I agree.
I'm just saying he knows in his head
whether he would have called the same play or a different play.
So if he would have called a different play 15 times,
then like, how is he going to sit there and just listen to it all week?
Yeah, I mean, I, I, this offense better.
And if I'm the owner, I'm like, what are you making $18 million for?
I mean, there is a chance, Sean Pay is the highest paid coach in the league.
We don't know these numbers, but it wouldn't shock.
He's got to be in that range, right?
Kyle just signed an extension.
He's got to be, I mean,
what's Kyle and McVeigh making?
Ah.
Is Kyle worth more than Purdy?
Is Andy worth every bit as Mahomes?
Like, what are these guys?
I watch some of these coaches sometimes thinking like,
the top guys are definitely underpaid when you look at some of the players.
Like they have guards making $28 million.
Oh, you're saying they have Kyle be making $60.
Maybe not 60, but you could argue whatever they're paying.
I'd say this.
You can go around the coaches, like all the top, impactful guys.
they're underpaid.
If John Harbaugh resurrects the Giants
and for the next three years
they're just in the playoffs,
he's 100% underpaid.
There's no one on that team
that's worth more than him.
Yeah.
How about when they were like,
John Harbaugh took the Giants
to the 9-11 Memorial.
I'm like,
oh my God,
of course he did.
He's like some of these guys
haven't been born yet.
I'm like,
yeah,
of course he didn't.
A lot of guys hadn't been born.
Like,
of course he did.
Like he should like, wow.
But when I heard that,
I'm like,
oh, they do have an adult in charge,
don't they?
That was my thought
when I heard that story.
You know, it's like, because you take it.
So be easy to take for granted.
Like, yeah, they all know what it is.
But like he knew that they didn't or at least they didn't understand the way
somebody his age or our age would understand.
Because the one thing you'd say about college is like,
Signetti's worth to his program more than any his highest paid player.
Like you would not trade Signetti for his height.
You're like Indiana.
He's more valuable.
Right.
Sabin always was.
I would say Lane more than likely is.
It looks like that's going to go pretty well.
Yes.
You know, you could, Sark and Ryan Day,
I'm more lukewarm on both those guys.
Could you replace them with someone else
and just create another Sarkerl Ryan Day
with those two programs?
Like those are, to me, Oregon's a little more unique
than, I'm not saying Sark and Ryan Day aren't good,
but it's like those programs,
if you get a capable individual,
like if I just gave John Summerall, Texas for the next five years,
is there a pretty good chance in five years
John Summerall's viewed as a really good coach?
I mean, you would think,
but like these,
once you find a guy that has,
won you or can win you a championship.
I'm not saying fire him.
I'm just saying,
it's set up to succeed.
It is.
But the NFL is not.
The NFL is not.
The NFL is much more difficult.
You constantly every certain period of time
have to kind of redo,
like the Chiefs had to kind of redo it this offseason.
Go all in for Kenneth Walker.
Their top 10 corner picks off the ball
and then he's hurt.
But it's like,
and you just keep rolling.
And you just got to figure it out.
They've done it multiple times.
Like that team they beat the 49ers with
and 23 in the Super Bowl had a bunch of guys that they had to draft in the previous year or two.
Like they've done it.
I think it's hard to, I think they're probably on the third Mahomes window right now.
They are.
This would be the third window, you would say.
Yeah.
Like, that's pretty impressive.
That's really impressive.
And the fourth window will be one day when Kelsey and Chris Jones just aren't on the team.
Yeah.
Who I think have been on the team the entire time he's been there.
The Niners, they play the Chiefs as year, right?
I don't think so.
But they play the Eagles.
the AFC West?
Do we put?
Oh, yeah, yeah.
What am I thinking?
They play the Chiefs
the Sunday after Christmas.
It's Brock Purdy's 27th birthday.
I feel like they never beat the Chiefs.
How about that?
That's crazy.
The real question is, do we fly on Christmas Day?
Afternoon?
When do you fly for that game?
When's the game?
The game is December 27th Sunday.
So usually it's...
It's Christmas on Friday.
Yeah, it's, you know, usually you go two-day.
if you're going more than two time zones.
To Kansas City?
Usually.
I think usually it would fly.
They wouldn't fly on Saturday for that game.
They would go like Friday afternoon?
That's my guess, yeah.
So two time zones is an auto two-day stay?
Or two nights stay, you go in the air.
One would be if they leave on the Friday,
when's the takeoff time, like two in the afternoon?
My guess would be actually take off maybe a little later,
get a walk through in the afternoon.
Oh, so they,
But it's tough. It's Christmas morning.
Get there eat.
Yeah, yeah.
You don't care about the night.
McVeigh would probably fly Sunday morning, so.
The real AFC West matchup, though, is the Raider game.
Who they play this week?
No, I mean, like the Niners play the Raiders.
Because you're right.
I don't know how I blanked on that.
Because Niners go to the charges on Thursday night
and then go to the Chiefs the following Saturday.
I said, I think it's a Saturday, actually.
Is Christmas on a...
I'm getting this all messed up.
Christmas might be on a Thursday.
No, no, Christmas on Friday.
It's on Friday.
You're saying they play the 27th, which is a Sunday.
Yeah, yeah.
But they play the Chargers on a Thursday night the week before in L.A.
So it's kind of coming off a longer week.
And then what I'm really saying is that the biggest AFC West game is the Raider game.
The Raiders are back in the bay, John, for the first time since they left.
That'll be a big moment.
That'll be a big moment.
Extra security?
Uh, nah.
Depends how the Raiders are playing.
You know, early, early, uh,
here's a real question for you.
Is Fernando Mendoza playing in that game?
Or the Raiders are going to be like,
I think the Raiders can win six or seven games.
Like if they're just headed toward like seven and ten,
I think they would redshirt them.
Yeah.
I think that is like Tom Brady's adamant about that.
Kubiak said that, which might be coming from Tom Brady.
I'm thinking about, I mean, Tom Brady was a different.
situation, but he did redshirt.
I think certain, you know, people from a certain time, and the Kubiaks were raised by a dad
who comes from that time.
Like, sitting is not the end of the world.
It takes a little pressure off you.
It also allows you to kind of add to the squad.
Right.
To play for a better team.
So, like, next year, your team's just better next year.
Everyone knows what they're doing around him.
He's more comfortable.
What, he had five, five career balls under center.
I think it is that right.
And Cal, I think in college it was five career balls.
Now, the sport's different.
Like the last night, Kenneth Walker, like, set a chief's record in the Mahomes era for
yards from a running back taking handoffs under center.
Because if you think about how many, probably gun runs they do over the course of Mahomes,
especially early on, those first several years of Mahomes probably was in the gun a lot.
Now Mahomes just, you know, you just, you get Kenneth Walker to hand him the ball under center
and let him kind of cook.
I still can't get over his performance.
I mean, he looked like Walter Paytoner.
And he looked,
he looked like the best running back in the league for 60 minutes.
He looked like Marshall.
He felt like Marcia.
Breaking tackles,
running around guys.
How about the long touchdown run where he's going on the sideline?
And the dude hits him and just,
just push him out of bounds.
That's what it feels like to us sitting on the couch.
But it's like it's a lot harder to push.
He doesn't knock him off his platform at all.
He just slips right off him.
That's what felt like kind of prime Marchon to me.
Which is scary.

When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months.
I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them.
I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files.

I don't know.
Have you guys heard of faux journaling?
Yeah, it's reading.
It's called reading.
So we don't like to use that word anymore.
Okay.
A panel of New Yorker cartoon.
Have you guys done Terry Gross's Peloton class?
No!
I've been dying too!
I'm so sorry, I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald's at the Wonderland Bookstore on 14th.
That's crazy.
I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday, and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark 30.
No way.
You have to come to the last bookstore, though.
Kim Cottrell is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday.

You hot on anything else today before we get out of here?
That's the guy that hired Haberman and then hiring.
hired me. He was a long time ESPN radio guy, built the station in the bay. And we used to
come into the office and he'd go like, you know, it's a classic like first take cold. He was
like cold pizza days. What do you guys hot on? You know, it's like, and then ideally you're
hot on something. I'm not hot on. So you say like, I think the chiefs are back. And I say,
no chance. One game. They're at home. Kenneth Walker, game of his life. And you start arguing.
and then you get cold pizza turned into first take
turned into modern day media.
Give it the phone number.
I will say this.
I do think you've always said this.
I think it's true from the time.
I'm kidding.
I love the guy, but it's sometimes it's not hot on anything.
Yeah, but that's also how to do good radio.
So it wasn't bad instruction.
I do think sometimes,
I think sometimes you just see something with your own eyes in person
and it just feels different,
even though you've seen it a million times on TV.
And to me a couple things.
one watching the Rams offense through binoculars 13 personnel revolutionized the league they ran it
one back two tight ends more than anybody like twice as much as anybody in the league last year
but for me when I'm calling a game I'm just kind of looking out going who's out there
and I always felt kind of relieved and it was like oh it's just puka not puka and devante and that kind of
washed over me during the game like oh 13 sweet devante's not on the field so that's not I don't really
have a take other than like feeling like
not many teams can run it like they can
but also there'd be times
like DeVante just wasn't on the field I'm like
oh thank God that's actually a relief
I never thought about that
the other take the take I had
was the same kind of setup
but Mike Evans like Mike Evans
12 years in Tampa
last year his streak of like
a thousand receiving yards basically every year
almost came to an end because he got hurt
and I watched him a lot
in practice and training camp going like, okay.
Like, not really that fast.
Doesn't really jump that high.
Like, not really like quick.
Like I don't.
And then you see him in the game and I'm like, oh my God.
This guy is unbelievable.
The, I mean, like they took him off the field on their first third and goal,
which I think that'll never happen again.
But he just was like, they put him in the slot a ton, which he doesn't really do.
And he looked comfortable.
They put him on the goal line.
He was just like, give me the ball.
Go get it.
I don't know if you saw the clip, but he was based on the bench going, like,
just give me the ball.
And they did touchdown.
The guy is sweet.
And they don't run phase.
No.
I mean, you know, a fade guy.
Well, yeah, I remember the last one they ran.
Oh, yeah.
Sherm.
But that's, I would, that was more like, that is it true just like.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I hear what you're saying.
But no, they don't.
Crabtree actually did catch that.
I remember for the Raiders, actually.
two-point conversion game winner against the Saints.
Against the Saints, I thought of that, I thought of that game yesterday.
Was that a week one game?
Jack went for two on the road.
You went for two, kind of, kind of Kellynne Moore style, you know, on the road.
The fade is sick when it just works.
You could argue Purdy could even throw it higher.
Oh, yeah, 100%.
I think that's probably the adjustment because he threw it right over.
Chalind Watson's a big corner.
But that, that was one way.
It can look really shitty or it can look just like the perfect alley-up.
It can look like the easiest thing.
It can look like a play.
like, why don't we just run that all the time?
Or it can look like a play that you like,
we should never run that again.
And there's no in between.
It's one of the two.
But watching Mike Evans,
you know,
the Niners over the years have gotten Randy Moss
and you've gotten some guys at the end of their careers.
But this guy, like,
I was like, holy smokes.
Like, this guy can play.
So that was pretty cool.
It almost feels,
almost feels like he's probably got an underrated impact
on the Johnny Mansell, Heisman,
that like
you know like when you think
Cam Newton's Heism
you're like that's fucking Cam Newton
Bade that Heisman
you know Reggie Bush
I just remember Johnny Mansell
hucketed it up a lot
to that big guy
who ended up being
I don't know
at first ballot Hall of Famer
super high character
grinder badass
it's like yeah I mean
that guy was pretty
if you just remove Mike Evans
and put just random
pretty good college receiver
does Johnny's career go
quite the same
no Derek Carr
Devante Adams
I was like sometimes just a perfect marriage.
Yeah.
And I just think that Mike's, you look back, it's kind of underrated, you know, his impact early.
I mean, he's been a mainstay in football.
I guess Tampa, they were bad for a while.
But once Tom got there, like people, I think the respect was on really quickly.
It was almost like a Larry Fitzgerald type deal.
Larry's probably better in his prime.
But like, you're a great wide.
to see if you play with no quarterback.
So he can get weird and get weird fast.
I did think, like, all the Niners players have just talked about it.
Like future Hall of Famer, future Hall of Famer, future Hall of Famer.
And I'm like, I mean, I think he's close.
But is he definitely a future Hall of Famer?
But I, is McCaffrey a future Hall of Famer?
I got into an argument with someone recently, like,
I feel like there are certain players that are like,
this is a Hall of Fame level player,
but like, well, his numbers and his longevity, I don't know.
I think he will be.
You think he won't be or he will be?
Well, I don't know.
I mean, how many great pure season has been injured a lot?
Yeah, but like how many do you really really?
need it running back i think how many years has he just looked like he has
records that just like two other people have or one of the person has right like he's
receiving touchdowns of all time receiving touchdowns uh what he's had two what's his he's had like a
few um he's had a few that are just like only let me see here uh christian uh last three years no
third time first team all AP.
I don't have it in front of me.
He has one that it's like,
it's like 100 receptions and 100 rushes.
And like he's done it twice and no one else has done it more than once.
He's got a few of those.
It's like him and Marshall.
I guess what I'm saying is like there's a difference of like Hall of Fame level
player.
There's been a lot of those who's like maybe career got a little weird or whatever.
And like the resume,
the longevity.
Like part of it's Mike Evans has had what like 11 straight,
a thousand yard seasons.
You know, it's like the APs definitely help.
Like George Kittles, he had no doubt about it, Hall of Famer.
I think he probably will be.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's what I would probably say.
Like, Stafford, like the argument kind of ended last year once he got the MVP.
He's over.
He's going in.
He's a lock, you know?
And then sometimes you just, you have the resume, the all pros, the production.
Like, Kelsey, his career so long and he was so elite for so long,
he got retired like three years ago and he would have been in
because you got a couple Super Bowls
with like all the 100 yard care
like part of it's saying healthy
if you're a great player and you just get to keep playing
but you're watching Kenneth Walker like
God if he just would have been playing like this for the last four years
we'd be talking about him like one of the best players we've ever seen
but sometimes you get injured
and that's what kind of derailed McCaffrey
it was like you know some of those years in Carolina
you obviously had the one year in San Francisco
a couple years ago where he's just he's injured
but when he plays
he's like, he just dominates statistically.
I just feel like some guys are just great
without doing the statistical argument on them.
And I think Christian's historical stats
will line up is pretty special
once his career's done,
even though I don't have those stats in front of me.
But I also think, like,
I just have watched over the course of multiple years
when you watch him, you went,
that's one of the most special players I've ever seen.
Right?
Like, he's just so unique.
And now, like, this has been here for him, too.
Well, think about it.
I saw this clip.
Rogers, when he did that interview
where he's talking about
his ex-girlfriends with Cam Hayward.
He also did a random interview
that showed up on one of my feeds
with like a local Milwaukee guy.
It was just him and that guy.
I don't know the guy's name.
I think he used to be a beat reporter.
Maybe now, it's like,
this is a podcast, he was just on.
It's just like 30 minutes.
Pretty good interview.
He hates Gutikins,
but he was going through some of his teammates
over the years, like all the receivers.
And he's like, he got to Devante.
He's like, talking about Hall of Famers.
Like, I hope he gets in one day.
and you know when I think
Devante I go well he's been one of the best receivers
in the league like clearly for
a four or five year period he was clearly
a top two or three receiver in the league.
And even as an older guy
he like leads the league in touchdowns like
that's a hall of fame level player
most red zone touchdowns in history I think
yeah yeah so like then you get
the stats like he's just in the hall of fame
like to me when I think Devante Adams he's a
Hall of Fame level receiver
but his
Receivers are really hard position
receivers are a hard position to get in
Yeah, I think Mike probably it.
Like I was, I remember I talked to Ted Winn about it.
And he was like, Mike Evan, his comp was Mike Evans is the Frank Gore of receivers,
which just sound, people just take that as like disrespectful.
But he's going to have a championship.
I bet I'm just excited to watch him this year as somebody who ended the year like,
I don't know.
Everyone says he is, but is he?
And then watching him one game.
I'm like, oh my God, this guy is.
I mean, we all know he's a game changer.
But to see it in person's pretty, pretty cool.
I think there's something to.
Four time, first team all pro.
Christian. Like that's as a running back. That's pretty. How many do you really need like to be
locked in as a Hall of Famer like five? I wonder what how it is how many is Derek Henry have?
Because he's clearly some you know, he's he's a lock Hall of Famer at this point.
And I bet that number's probably two or three. But his is more longevity. Like he still looks
completely fine. One Christian looks actually a little quicker. First team. He has one. Derek Henry.
But he's got like rushing yards. Yeah. That's where it's like.
Like, you just say Derek Henry and everyone goes Hall of Famer.
You don't even need to look at the number.
There are certain guys.
That's how I would have thought about Christian.
You just don't even need to look.
And again, we're talking about a guy who's career.
Like, if he stays healthy, you still could play it.
I mean, how many, he's like one of the top five fantasy picks and everyone's draft.
There's like, people expect him to do, have 20 touchdowns this year.
Which will be hard if he's not on the, you know, if he's split and carries a little bit more this year.
Well, I mean, in, so Indiana, I mean,
they just had a left tackle start for the chiefs who had never started a left tackle and it was good.
Black, who everyone says like, oh, you can't take them in the third round, week one.
And all preseason has looked excellent.
To me, Indiana is a program.
I'm like, I think there are players who are going to get the benefit of the doubt moving forward.
It's like, do we need to move this guy up a little on our draft board?
These guys kind of come in ready to the league.
I mean, yeah, part of it is like when you have money, you're like getting other guys good players.
So it's not like Indiana's developing them for four years, right?
Like Kallon Black, the other running back they had actually had more yards than him who the Raiders drafted last year.
Roman Hemby, who came from Maryland.
Kenlon Black obviously came from JMU.
But like when you start getting guys from other programs, but I think the separator and I've talked to some minor people about it is like,
there's a certain type of guy that is not allowed in a Kurtzignetti program.
So you're not just getting the best players.
That's what I mean.
Yeah, yeah.
No, you're right.
I think you're right.
Like there's a certain type of guy that you have to be.
And when I asked somebody the day, I was like, what's Kailon like?
Like just serious, quiet.
I haven't talked to him yet, but serious, quiet.
But you're right.
Klon would be considered like he had been with him the entire time.
Yeah, you're right.
You know, that's a good one for your point, actually.
Yeah.
I don't know the tackle, which is pretty crazy.
You never played left tackle?
No, I've played like garden, right tackle.
Week one, Monday Night Football.
Yeah, we'll start.
They're pretty good.
Troy Aikman had an incredible line.
He's like, you know, I've never met an officer.
offensive lineman in my entire life who wouldn't always choose to run the ball over
pass block.
And he thinks for a second and they pan, he's like, except one, Andy Reid.
And that's what was so crazy about that game is that, you know, Andy's his offensive
lineman.
That's what makes Ben Johnson, you know, I call him the Midwest Kyle.
They had 290 yards rushing.
He had 200 yards rushers.
Like that guy, he wants to call runs.
And he's got Caleb who looks.
pretty damn good.
Meanwhile, Kyle came out throwing the ball.
Which was crazy.
At what, 25 attempts in the first quarter?
Yeah, I mean, they had, I think at one point it was 12 to four, which almost never happens.
That's what makes football, like, clearly they wanted to get those guys running, right?
Don't you think?
Yeah, like wearing them out.
You think that factored into it?
Yeah, I think that's a good, off the plane.
And then run it with a fresh Christian in the second half.
When they're kind of gassed and kind of in a days, that's what football has.
I'll end on this.
This crossed my mind the other day.
Hearing the discourse after Thursday,
or Wednesday night,
Thursday night.
Discourse.
I just love here.
I just mean social media.
I know.
I don't mean like pods.
I just mean people's takes.
All these things like after the Ohio State Texas game,
after the Oklahoma,
Michigan game,
after all the NFL games,
there's just nothing like this sport because
the importance of every game
and every coach always says,
right,
only get so many of these.
And they're fucking.
dead serious.
So the Yankees
clinched the playoffs.
The game yesterday
didn't matter.
The game tomorrow
won't matter.
It's like,
are you going to have
the game in June
matters but like did it?
Yeah.
And basketball,
their own players
and the training staff
like yeah,
this next month doesn't matter.
We can load manage them.
In football,
every game.
For the regular season.
It's just so important.
Every snap feels big.
Even like I'm watching the Jets Titans.
I'm like,
this is pretty important for Eric Glenn.
Like if you've got to,
there's some pressure.
LaFour,
the guy is 77.
and 40 and people like fire them.
Now it was up 22 to 10,
but my point is there's just
nothing like the setup
for our society.
It's just tailor made
for the way people are wired right now.
Yeah.
The only question is how many games
can you play and not lose that?
Yeah.
You play 18?
Definitely.
You can play 18.
Yeah, you can play 19.
You play 25?
You know, like the college, I think,
if you had to guess,
just preseason
never exist in our lifetime
and they play 20?
I mean, I think we're definitely right
going to two. I don't know. I mean,
preseason is kind of cool because you can get, like, from a financial
standpoint, but you can still make a lot of money on it.
But you need like a game. I think maybe we get to one game.
You think we'll go to zero games?
If they were going to do one, I think they would do zero.
I guess you know what, to your point, once you go to one,
what are people doing? Like, or you go to two?
Like McVeigh doesn't play anybody anyway.
Like the Rams could play zero.
They basically do.
Two's basically a try out for all your fringe guys.
Yeah, the coaches will like it, but they don't get asked.
No one gives a shit what they think.
So in these decisions.
What's the most number of games we can play?
They would go 20.
But then if they go 20, if college keeps consolidating,
would college add games?
Non-playoffs.
Yeah, I mean, they'd love to add.
They're just going to stick at 12.
Yeah, what do you?
I mean, they definitely had games.
Once they're a 40 team, you know, a tier or whatever, it'll be 50 teams.
Yeah.
The dogs will just beat up on SAC State.
That's right.
The dogs will be there.
Cal Poly might be there with the dogs.
Yeah, Tim Skipper.
They're coming.
I was, I text Skipper yesterday.
You know his brother is still, it's been in Buffalo for like,
Kelly?
2017.
Brady kept him.
he's just there.
He's like, he just loves Buffalo.
It doesn't suck.
He's been there with Josh Allen's entire tenure.
To go from the Raiders,
you know, coaching the Raiders running backs for all those years
to go to Josh Allen.
Raiders had some good backs.
He got to feel pretty good.
Yeah, he did.
McFad.
Latavius.
