John k...icks things off by reacting to Josh Allen and the Bills losing effort vs. a dominant Texans defense. John debates if the Super Bowl window for the Bills has closed. John then gives props to the Texans for surviving star QB C.J. Stroud's concussion, and believe that no one wants to see the Texans defense in the playoffs. John then explains why Dallas Cowboys wide receivers Ceedee Lamb and George Pickens are ZONED IN after their dominant performance vs. the Raiders in Week 11. John then reacts to a report about the Minnesota Vikings trying to fix QB J.J. McCarthy's throwing mechanics midseason. Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an IHeart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
Starting point is 00:00:30 you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the ice. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:04 The story I've told myself can then shape my behavior, and that can lead me to sabotage the possibility of connection. This Mental Health Awareness Month, tune into the podcast Deeply Well with Debbie Brown. If you've been searching for a soft place to land while doing the work to become whole, this podcast is for you to hear more. Hey, I'm Diana Maria Riva, and on my new podcast, How Hard Can It Be?
Starting point is 00:01:38 I call on my Gen X squad from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate Midlife's most fantastic BS. Unfiltered conversations from night sweats to futas to scheduling sex. Wait, what sex? Is it just me or does every woman my age want to look at Pinterest instead of having sex sometimes? They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try. let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter. Listen to How Hard Can It Be with Deanna Maria Riva on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:10 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast point game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was crying. You just understood.
Starting point is 00:02:25 That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Marquis keep coming to him. He's like, you know I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:02:40 The volume. What is going on, everybody? How are we doing on this Fugazi Friday? Brought to you by my friends at Zone Pouches. And it turns out the bills might be the biggest Fugazi of them all. They lose to the Texans on Thursday night football to, to fall to seven and four looking way up at the Patriots
Starting point is 00:03:16 who if they win this week are in complete control of the division and the bills but got to be fighting for a wild card what a dominant performance by the Texans defense. We will dive into that game. Something I saw from
Starting point is 00:03:30 C.D. Lamb and George Pickens that actually makes me like him a lot more. Reminds me of my youth when it comes to pro sports. J.J. McCarthy We'll have Stucky on as well. So a big, big Friday show. I think we'll have a Saturday mailbag as well too.
Starting point is 00:03:48 So getting us ready for, you know, the weekend before Thanksgiving. We got a bunch of good games next week. Yeah, it's a little hit or miss this weekend, but we'll get fired up. Tonight was, that was pretty riveting television, not going to lie. I mean, when you factor in two playoff teams, I don't know if the Texans end up making it, But that defense is pretty... That defense is no joke. But you guys know the drill.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Make sure you subscribe to the podcast. If you listen on Collins' feed. Make sure you subscribe to the YouTube page. Just type in my name. Subscribe. And never miss the thing. Other than that, we'll just keep the content flowing. But before we dive into some football...
Starting point is 00:04:28 I got to tell you about my friends. Zone pouches. And quick warning. This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive chemical. Underage sale... prohibited. If you're as competitive as I am, you always are looking for something to help you stay dialed in. That's what I just had to do during that game. And that thing for me is zone pouches.
Starting point is 00:04:48 You won't catch me without my can of mince. I have a big delivery coming, though. Not to mention 20 pouches per can versus the 15 and the other guys offer. Choose zone and dominate the day. Use the promo code. Number three and out 20 at nico kick.com for 20% at checkout. Let's just dive into this game. Obviously the Texans win 23 to 19. I don't know if I've ever seen anything quite like it. As someone texts me, when you sack Josh seven or eight times, that's the equivalent of like 15 for another team. That was as big of an ass kicking from a front four to an offensive line
Starting point is 00:05:30 as you will see all season long. Especially when you're factoring, we're not that far removed just a couple months that the Buffalo Bills were the betting favorite to win the AFC. and win the Super Bowl. They were a gigantic favorite at the beginning of the year to win the division, a division in which they have
Starting point is 00:05:52 dominated for years. Obviously, the Super Bowl feels like a mile away from this team. The division feels all but over and it's not even Thanksgiving. Because it's not just like, well, John, we still got Josh Allen.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Yeah. You had Josh Allen against Texans. You kind of got worked. And like, it's not his fault. You have a superhuman player. Obviously, tonight, I wouldn't say was his best effort, though I'm not sure what he could do. We'll dive into the players around him. But this Bill's team is extremely flawed. And tonight clearly wasn't good for them on the injury front.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Lots multiple defenders. Cook got banged up. Their weapons, they're already missing Kincaid. Keon Coleman pissed off someone really, really bad. He can't even get a helmet. and shoulder pads on game day anymore. But the fascinating part of this game was it was strength on strength.
Starting point is 00:06:49 The reigning MVP, a guy that just had six touchdowns or counted for six touchdowns, three throwing, three on the ground, four days ago. As dominant a physical specimen as there is in the league when he's on. Against a defense that, listen, depending on the statistic
Starting point is 00:07:06 where you want to rank them, they are as good as any. And DeNeil Hunter looks like Arnold Swartner, looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1979. Will Anderson is as good of a young player as there is in the NFL, any position that includes quarterback. All of their DBs can run, catch the ball, and hit. Their defensive coaching is pretty elite when you factor in how good D'Amico is. Matt Burke's doing a really good job, obviously, as well, calling the plays.
Starting point is 00:07:35 But Josh lost, and Josh, the offense lost. and the Texans defense completely controlled that game. Really about the second quarter on, in the second half, it wasn't even a fair fight. The Bill's offensive line, which is pretty good, was getting absolutely worked on every single play. And at one point in time in the fourth quarter, Herb Street brings up, the Texans had only blitz four times. And on the fifth time, that's when they hit Shakir on a massive play that looked like almost saved their saved the game. He jukeed a couple guys out, let him to field goal. It went from 23 to 16 to 23 to 19. Obviously, they couldn't score in that final drive where Shakir again made an incredible play on
Starting point is 00:08:23 great play call by Joe Brady on the hook and ladder, which when Josh let the ball go on the hook and ladder, it was like fourth and 27, you went, I don't think that's going 27 yards. It was awesome. That was a great play call. But it was a great play call. But it was a great play call. But it wasn't quite enough. Then, you know, Gabe Davis' foot doesn't get, come into bounds a couple plays later. And obviously they get stuffed because their defensive line, Will Anderson makes a great play. But the right tackle was getting abused all night. Deon Dawkins, I don't know if it was the Texan speed. He does look a little heavy to me. I know he is a bigger guy, but he looked extremely slow out there. He had an awful false start at the end of the game. And even Herb Street was like,
Starting point is 00:09:10 That's what happens when you're terrified about getting smoked off the edge. And the Texas team's speed was just elite. And the bills really had no answers. And if their offense doesn't dominate, they're screwed. A couple weeks ago, as Josh said, he played terribly. What happened? They got destroyed by Miami. Last week, they were in trouble.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Like, Sean Tucker looked like Lidani and Tomlinson or Marshall Falk. you go, is Tampa really going to go to Buffalo and win this game? Well, no. Josh is like, I'm going to score six touchdowns and make sure we don't lose this game. And today they were going to need that again. But that's not possible against this defense. And that's the bill's problem. They're not a well-rounded team. Their defense, when healthy, is questionable.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Their defense after tonight, when you're missing multiple guys because they're getting injured in the game, you lose a first-round pick, you lose one of your better linebackers. All of a sudden, your defense is bad. there was a moment in the first half when Ray Davis takes the kickoff to the house, which was an awesome play, right? Bounces off his own blocker. Both the defenders go to make a tackle. He bounces right, does a spin move. They whiff, he takes it to the crib. They take the lead. Davis Mills, a backup quarterback, gets the ball back under two minutes, drives right down the field, touchdown. To me, that moment, before the second half even happened, I went, if you can't,
Starting point is 00:10:41 in a massive spot, just at minimum hold the Texas to a field goal attempt, let alone just not let them cross the 50 as a defense. This is not C.J. Stroud. This is not Patrick Mahomes. This is not Lamar Jackson. This is not Drake May and the Patriots. This is Davis freaking Mills. Hoof! Right down the field. Touchdown. Go to half. You don't have the lead. I went, I'm out. You have, one thing is consistent in football. I say high school football, haven't watched high school football in a while, but definitely college football in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:11:17 You have no chance to win a championship. Hell, you have no chance to really make hay in the playoffs if your defense is not good. I don't care who your quarterback is. And obviously the bills have a fantastic quarterback. Their defense isn't good enough. you don't need to be the Texans on defense. That's the best case scenario.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Your defense just has to be capable. And tonight, not only are they not capable, they do not look good. They do not look like they have the personnel. And then offensively, their margin for error in Buffalo is pretty small. Why? I was thinking this tonight. Obviously, their GM in the aggregate, has done a good job. Him and Sean were a big reason.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Josh Allen got drafted. like that when you make that draft pick kind of carries you for a long time but once you get six, seven, eight years into the career especially once you start paying him a ton of money they've made some other personnel mistakes like paying von Miller a lot of money
Starting point is 00:12:17 that money still carries on their salary cap their left tackle makes a lot of money James Cook now makes a lot of money they paid Joey Bosa this year what, $12, $13 million. They have paid some people some money you need to take advantage in the draft and they drafted Keon Coleman. Listen, I'm not going to act like I play Monday morning quarterback.
Starting point is 00:12:38 I like the pick. I like the player. Loved him at Florida State. Clearly, they already had Khalil Shakir, who is an excellent player. He was awesome the night. That is a winning football. You can go to war against the Chiefs, against the Ravens, against the Texans, big-time defenses, big-time teams with that guy.
Starting point is 00:12:57 But he needs help. You have a great running back. I know he's banged up, but like James Cook is a high-end player. You did need a big physical wide receiver. A year and a half in, he was inactive on Sunday. And then four days later, after Dion Dawkins, after the game, was like, listen, we're not going to dwell on this. We're going to move forward.
Starting point is 00:13:18 We talk to him. Head up. Keep on rolling. Well, to me, something doesn't add up. Like, this is more than just like missed a meeting, slept through something. Like, clearly they are pissed off on you. They are down on you as a player because four days later, you're inactive again. And let's face it, a must-win game.
Starting point is 00:13:39 This falls on the organization. And then when you look at the following picks of teams that are good, the next pick. And listen, the bills weren't going to take Ladd-McKaki. Now, Ladd-McKonkki's probably a better player than Shakir. But, like, they already have their version. And Shakir's damn good. But Ladd-McKonkki's drafted the next player. My point is, the Chargers immediately, a playoff team, get one of the best players on their team.
Starting point is 00:14:06 And then let's just say, okay, well, you could have used defensive players. Let's pick a couple other playoff teams, a couple selections later. The Philadelphia Eagles, you know who they took? Cooper DeGine. Last time I checked, that guy's pretty good. The Los Angeles Rams, they're pretty good. Took Braden Fisk. You knew who could use a big-time defensive lineman?
Starting point is 00:14:25 The Bills. That is your job to get this right. and when you draft Keon Coleman pick 33 on a roster like this that is extremely top heavy with money, you've got to take advantage of your picks. Listen, like, is Xavier worthy how good he? He plays for the
Starting point is 00:14:40 Chiefs. They depend on the guy. Wiggins, the corner from Clemson, who's on the Ravens. Every time I look up, he's making plays. So those picks in the late 20s, early 30s for the good teams, whether you stay there in the 20s or you trade back to 33,
Starting point is 00:14:56 34, 35. You got to fuck and make hay. Because those guys, you get impact starters for cheap money. And the bills a year and a half into this guy, he can't even dress on game days. Because who knows, you know, Sean McDermott's pretty tight-lipped and the bills aren't some leaky organization, but clearly something's going on. They're extremely doubt on them. So let's call a spade of spade. That pick currently is a disaster. Because I'm watching today, kind of could use someone. I don't know to help them out. But he's sitting on this in the sideline with a t-shirt and i'm not blaming them for not having them active clearly they have their reasons they've proven to be a high-level organization they know what they're doing
Starting point is 00:15:37 but they pick the guy and he can't contribute and let's face it on the totality like he's been pretty underwhelming so then when you factor in like you're an offensive team your offensive line is getting their ass kicked through the first half josh aown do you have a hundred yards davis mills outplayed him in the first half now part of it's not even his fault He only has secure to throw to, really, and he's running for his life. And Josh Allen, typically when he's running for his life, can run away from most people. You're not running away from Will Anderson. You're not running away from...
Starting point is 00:16:12 I just can't get over how big DeNeil Hunter's arms are. Like, I mean, I do some curls sometimes. What's he do? I would love to ask him, like, do you slow release the down part of the curl? How do you get the biceps that big? he is a monster. I mean, those two guys, what are you supposed to do? If you're the bills, you at least got to neutralize them a little bit.
Starting point is 00:16:35 And they really had no answers all game long. And like most people, I mean, they've been one of the premium teams in the league now for six, seven years since Josh has become a star. I don't remember him getting his ass kicked and just consistently hawked and thrown to the ground play after play. play after play. Honestly, if you just ask someone, if they didn't have the box score up, how many times the night was Josh Allen sacked? You might say 15. It felt like he was on the ground every other play. It's honestly pretty nuts that they had a chance to win the game. They had the ball with a couple timeouts driving the field against one of the best defense in the league. Now, part of that is they hit a hook and ladder, but the strength of their team got destroyed.
Starting point is 00:17:24 and if the strength of your team, even if you were playing one of the best units in the league, you at least have to be a push, right? Especially in a game like this. Now listen, these Thursday night games on the road, this is not, it's not like they're hopping on a train. Like this is a several-hour flight. My guess is Buffalo to Houston, three and a half, four hours.
Starting point is 00:17:46 I mean, it's a long flight. That is not an easy trip. This is not an easy game. This would be one of those games at the beginning of the season. you could drop. But when you drop the Dolphins game a couple weeks ago, you can't drop this one. Not when the Patriots keep winning, so I'm just stunned. And I think this lost tonight's on the front office, picking the wrong players, not having enough talent on defense, picking the wrong player a year ago at pick 33. That draft pick was extremely important
Starting point is 00:18:19 for the Buffalo Bills. And he can't even dress on game day. I can't stress, you enough, how big of a disaster that is. I mean, seriously, the pick 33, when you are a Super Bowl caliber team, a year and a half in, can't dress on game day, because it's clearly about more than just sleeping in in a meeting. You don't think he's good enough. You thought your offense was better without him? And that's an indictment. So for as much as I bet everyone's going to shit on Sean McDermott. And listen, when you're a defensive coach, your defense looks like that, and it's clearly you're the guy calling the defense. You bear that, right?
Starting point is 00:18:57 And you have a lot of pull in the draft when you're drafting defensive players over the years. You take responsibility on that. But the Keyon Coleman move, man. And then, like, when you have a good offensive line, like, they got to show up. And they look slow. They look injured.
Starting point is 00:19:14 They look fat. I mean, they just, I don't know how much. I like Dionne Dawkins. I have a lot of respect for him, his entire story coming from Temple, you know, non, like top 10. pick becoming a high-end left tackle. Looks he weighs like
Starting point is 00:19:28 370 pounds. You can't play against Will Anderson and Deniel Hunter when you're carrying all that extra weight. Obviously he's a big guy. It's not like he's going to weigh 290 pounds, but just look so stiff and it's
Starting point is 00:19:43 like he had no shot. And the right tackle is getting spun like a dreidel. So if you're a Bill's fan, I think you've got to ask yourself, is the window kind of over like this little run of this group. Obviously with Josh, he's not going to go away, but does kind of feel that way. And if I was a betting man, like I don't see this team making a run in the playoffs, honestly, you could argue that the Texans, if they were to get in, would be scarier.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Now, still don't love their offense. You know, they are very dependent. And I like Woody Marks has been pretty impressive. But you saw tonight the more carries he got, he got a little banged up. You know, when Chub comes in, he lacks some juice. Nothing but respect for that guy battling through that knee injury, but no longer quite has the same explosion. But that defense, holy shit. Like, that defense on any playoff game could beat any team. They can be, and they've done D'Amico, Nick Casario,
Starting point is 00:20:45 they deserve a lot of credit. Because early on, like, I was out. I was like, this, the O-Line sucks, this coordinator sucks. This team's in chamois. And then a couple weeks ago, once CJ gets the concussion, you're like, this thing's over. Like, listen, is he perfect? No. Davis Mills is a pretty damn good backup. Missed a couple throws early in that game, but just kept swinging, kept throwing, kept chucking it, made some plays.
Starting point is 00:21:10 Honestly, I felt like the offensive coordinator called passes when he tried to call runs. It's like, bro, you can be conservative here. Just run out the clock. I know you got faith in this guy. Stanford guy, smart guy, good player for a backup. Honestly, he's probably better than a backup, but he's not quite good enough to be a top 20 starter. He's kind of in that no man's land,
Starting point is 00:21:35 but he's going to play in the NFL for a long time. And it does look for these last couple games, like he's kind of saved their season. I mean, a couple weeks ago, what were they down? 28 to 10 or something to the Jags in the fourth quarter. Came stormed back. He made a bunch of plays. Tonight, threw a couple touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Google how many Josh threw? He threw zero. So, I mean, it's just, he came through, and obviously, defensively, I just can't get over. I love, you know, in sports and specifically football, when you make a really bold move, right? Clearly, the organization, and it felt like the owner, kind of pressed them to take CJ Stroud.
Starting point is 00:22:11 And I obviously don't regret doing that, but they loved Will Anderson. And they came back from 12 to 3. They gave a pick 12, pick 33, and the following years number one, when you make a trade like that, you better nail it. And it's why there's a lot of pressure on the Jags with Travis Hunter.
Starting point is 00:22:31 It's like, you know, you went from five to two, you traded another first round pick. This guy better be like Dion Sanders 2.0 or something, or this is not going to age well. Well, I got news for you. The Will Anderson pick was a hit. That trade was worth it. Because he's as good as any player
Starting point is 00:22:51 under 25 in the NFL. I mean, his, his, I remember when he was coming out the talk about his football character, like in, in scouting circles at the Combine, the Pro Day, was as good as it gets. Like, from a football character standpoint, means how hard he trains, how seriously he takes everything surrounding the rehab, the lifting, the film study, practice habits, how much he loves football, how into it he is. Obviously, when you watch him play NFL games, he jumps off the screen as a guy. You can't play any harder. You literally, you know, like Max Crosby when you're watching him, it's like, you can't play any harder than this. And when you have talent and your effort is 10 out of 10, you're going to dominate. He reminds me a little bit. It's not an apples to apples comparison,
Starting point is 00:23:43 but a little bit of a young Khalil Mack. I'd argue, you know, Kaleel might have had a little more natural bend maybe, but Will Anderson's motor, you could argue beside Max Crosby is as good as anyone in the NFL. So when you're the number three overall pick from Alabama and you have the second best motor in the NFL, you're probably going to be pretty good. And especially when you're playing across from DeNeal Hunter, who again, I think besides like Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1982, no one has bigger biceps in the last 40 years in America than that guy. are just, they jump off the screen. So it's like, oh, you can bend the edge and you're six foot five.
Starting point is 00:24:25 And you have those pythons? That's what a defensive end is supposed to look like. So just an ass kicking. I know it was 2319. It didn't feel that close. I mean, that was a really, really impressive performance by the Hughes and Texas with their backup quarterback. Just defense buckling their chin straps and fucking cracking skulls all night. There were a couple times, I mean, Josh Allen is kind of Rothesburger and Cam Newton.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Even when he gets sacked, you expect him to hop back up. There were a couple times tonight, it's like, man, he's going to need some help. Did he just break a collarbone? He's got the wind knocked out of him. They just break his wrist. And every time you'd kind of shake it off. But he's not going to feel good getting out of bed tomorrow morning. Neither are anyone on the bills, because I think they're kind of looking.
Starting point is 00:25:13 And if you're Sean McDermott now, I think, you know, I think, you know, They lose that job. I think if you're going to put Sean, you've got to put the GM as well. Because like Keon Coleman, that's blood on his hands. I mean, is this one of those situations where you kind of hit the nuke button? Is it something that if you're the ownership, you kind of hesitate to do because, you know, you got Josh Allen. Or does that actually put more pressure on you to, we got to go all in because we have Josh Allen? who are your options, right? A couple years ago, you could have hired Jim Harbaugh.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Well, you're looking around, last year you could have hired Mike Vrable. You're looking around like, what are you doing? Like, who's even available? Clint Kubiak? Robert Sala? You're not going to fire Sean McDermott for Robert Sala. So that has to factor into this, but does feel like they could free fall a little bit because they are a flawed team with a fantastic quarterback who,
Starting point is 00:26:15 I don't want to say circling the drain, but relative to the standard in which they are viewing themselves as a 12 to 14 win team competing for Super Bowls. They feel like they've taken a dramatic step back. And that pains me. I mean, Josh Allen's one of my favorite players in the league. He's one of my favorite players to watch. But hell, Will Anderson just threw his hat in the ring there as well.
Starting point is 00:26:35 Like, I'm a Will Anderson guy. If I was into jerseys, I'd buy a Will Anderson jersey. That was sweet. That was, if you like football, old school football, That was fun. We don't get a lot of that anymore. That feels like a throwback to like the 2000s or the 90s. Just one team with a couple just premium pass rushers that are, we're going to sack you 10 times tonight. And the other times we don't sack you, we're going to drive you into the ground. And there's not going to be any pansy flags for falling on you with our weight or whatever the bullshit stuff,
Starting point is 00:27:06 Roger Goodell and Merton Hanks and those guys the league office have made up over the last couple of years to cover their ass from lawsuits. We don't give a shit about any of that. Send the fine to Houston. We'll pay it. But we're going to pepper this guy till the clock literally went out during the game, but when it actually is running, hits double zero.

Starting point is 00:29:21 We just contributed to a... We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts throughout there. But this one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Oh, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band.
Starting point is 00:29:43 Before Jonas Brothers This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, Hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad,
Starting point is 00:29:57 Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guide, Not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier.

We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Renee Stubbs. And on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm Breaston.
Starting point is 00:31:42 breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jen she went. I mean, she went down at three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rabakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any surface.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court-side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano, and our podcast Point Game is about defying the odds. Like LeBron heading into the playoffs without Luca and Austin Reed. And finding ways to win no matter what.
Starting point is 00:32:32 He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin. Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
Starting point is 00:32:53 He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers,
Starting point is 00:33:09 why he got the ball like, after you go through a training camp with that I said, you figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaking of old school football,
Starting point is 00:33:34 a couple guys in the NFL, I got to give some credit to for being zoned in. And I saw sometimes on Instagram, you see quotes that are just, clearly fake, right? And they make you chuckle. And honestly, you have to read them twice. You're like, did LeBron really say that? No, no, no, no, no. And then you realize it's a completely made up quote, right? But it puts a smile on your face. It's fun. That's social media. And there are some quotes and just stories going on, I would say, Instagram over the last,
Starting point is 00:34:07 I would say 24, 48 hours on CD Lamb and George Pickens. And what they do, and what they do, did in Las Vegas, how basically they had gone out, they had gambled, they had gotten drunk, and I just kept reading this and thinking, well, I saw them play, they dominated. The NFL is not baseball or basketball. If you are the Cowboys and you're playing the Raiders on Monday Football, you probably touched down in Vegas about four or five. You don't eat individually. Typically, you're at a hotel, not on the strip.
Starting point is 00:34:42 You have a ballroom with meeting rooms. the bowl room is essentially like your cafeteria and you have a team meal. It's not like the O-Limon, the D-Liman, they're going out in Vegas eating at steakhouses for dinner. You eat at the hotel probably from 630 to 7.30. Cafeteria is open. You can come down to your room and eat whenever you want. And there was just an unlimited amount of food and the team, the coaches, the trainers, they all eat. You don't go out and eat. So when I saw it's like they went out to eat. And then they clearly verified the story of, yeah, we were out, we went to dinner, aka after, because usually you eat, and then you'll probably have a team meeting, and then maybe you'll break into individual
Starting point is 00:35:26 or unit meetings like offensive defense or wide receiver meetings, and then there's head to bed. And football players, after the meeting, you'll get a thing called snack that clearly they bypassed and just went to the Red Rock casino. and they had a second dinner and we're having cocktails and clearly having a good time. Which kind of reminds me, this is again the night before a game. This is type stuff that used to happen a lot. It doesn't happen as much anymore.
Starting point is 00:35:57 We live in a generation of guys that like drink green juices that brag about going to bed early. The athletes I grew up on, Michael Jordan, would drink like a 12-pack at lunch, three hours, before a game. That's why a lot of of us kind of revere the guy. It's like legendary shit. Nowadays it's like, what can we put in the smoothie? Can I get a can I get an immunity blast?
Starting point is 00:36:22 And listen, I'm not faulting anybody. I try to stay focused on my health as well, but there's something special about Kenny Stabler going you know what? I studied the playbook by the light of the jukebox. For those of you kids, that's something that used to play music in the
Starting point is 00:36:39 70s at the bar, the before the game. And Al Davis's teams, and most teams in the 70s and 80s, were notorious for just drinking, booze and smoking all the time in playing ball. Those days are clearly over. Way more money on the line. You don't have as much crazy going on. And that generation of player, the 70s, the 80s, hell, even the 2000s, if you would have had a team in Vegas, there would have been a lot of shenanigans going on. I've thought ever since the team moved to Vegas, in this modern day time, especially in the NFL, you're only there for 24 hours, no one's going to stay on the strip. Nothing even crazy is going to happen. All these guys just go to bed, play the game the next day. Not George
Starting point is 00:37:17 Pickens and C.D. Lamb. Here's the problem, though, if you're a Raider fan. They literally are admitting that they got caught, staying out late, boozing the night before game. They combined for 14 catches, 200 yards, and two touchdowns. The Raiders' wide receivers and tied ends combined for 238 yards. They outgained two guys who were hung over, didn't even take you seriously enough as an opponent to just go to bed at a decent time. You outgain them by 38 yards as an entire team and scored one less touchdown than them. So you talk about two guys who just said, we're living. We're going to go booze. Hell, we might play a little craps, maybe a little blackjack. We're going to have a good time in Vegas. We don't give a shit. And you know what I
Starting point is 00:38:04 What I like about Jerry Jones? Where's Jerry from? 70s, 80s and 90s. What's he known for? A team that literally had something called the White House where they did crack and hookers all the time was very normal. Again, crack.
Starting point is 00:38:19 That cocaine. That's what they were doing in the 90s. You know why Jerry didn't care? The guy to lead the charge was his Hall of Fame wide receiver. Teams that I grew up watched it all the time. It was well known. Everyone talked about it. It was funny.
Starting point is 00:38:33 Kind of, not really when he was going through. the trial, but other than that, like, it's a huge part of the documentary. So I just appreciate that we just have a couple throwbacks. In a day and age where everyone's talking about health and wellness and going to bed on time, I don't mind an athlete every once a while, a couple hours sleep, going for two bills and two tuggies, and just going, you can't stop me. I don't give a shit whether I had seven cocktails or seven Gator A's. It doesn't matter. And for George Pickens and CD Lamb, you gain my respect. Props to you guys.
Starting point is 00:39:09 What else is going on? One thing I just want to hit on is there was an article that came out on ESPN.com today about J.J. McCarthy. And it's about a lot of different things, and he's talked about this. I saw he was discussed this at his press conference today. They're trying to rewire his brain
Starting point is 00:39:33 because they're rewiring his mechanics. and they're trying to change his muscle memory, which is obviously very, very difficult to do in professional sports. And a couple years ago, and I said this why I didn't believe in this situation, because any time you get a raw player and you try to mold them while they are playing on a team with expectations to be really good,
Starting point is 00:39:58 it's going to be a disaster. I saw it with Trey Lance and Kyle Shanahan. He was hoping that he would be a plug-in-play player. he clearly wasn't. He was going to need a lot of work. And even if he got a lot of work, there was no guarantee he was going to be good. And they pivoted immediately. They realized they just didn't have the time. And they didn't have, you know, a long runway to figure this thing out if it failed.
Starting point is 00:40:22 Because they were ready to win and ready to win immediately. And obviously they got bailed out because they drafted Brock Purdy in the seventh round, who became a really good player, just threw three touchdowns coming back from the turf toe. Aaron Rogers famously, coming out of Cal, had some weird mechanics. Held the ball really high, had kind of a funky release. And for three years behind the scenes, he just worked at practice, changed his muscle memory, changed his mechanics. And then by the fourth year, when Ted Thompson shipped Brett Farr, he was able to have changed his mechanics, rewire his brain, and start for the Packers. And his first year starting pretty sure they went six and ten.
Starting point is 00:41:04 so he got to play for a team, the expectations lost some games. They weren't that good. And then within a couple years, he's winning MVPs, and they win a Super Bowl, and the rest is history. But J.J. McCarthy is not going to be given that much time. And clearly trying to rewire anyone who's ever played golf, and you've tried to make a swing change, it's one thing to do it on the practice range, right?
Starting point is 00:41:26 Hit some range ball. It's like, okay, I figure something out. And then you go to the first hole, and you're playing some guy for 20, 50 bucks. and all of a sudden you pump one into the house. Why? Because you resort to muscle memory that you know not what you've been working on because it takes a while to force that into the new kind of rotation of what you're doing and who knows if it can even stick.
Starting point is 00:41:50 So J.J. McCarthy, they're trying to change his mechanics on the fly, but meanwhile he's failing every Sunday. So from a confidence standpoint, it's impossible to build any positive momentum. So this thing with J.J. McCarthy, to me, it's not apples to apples, but this thing's Trey Lance 2.0. Clearly they like them. The 49ers like Trey Lance a lot as a guy. They wanted it to work. And the 49ers gave up way more for Trey Lance than they did for J.J. McCarthy. But there is no way when you have elite players at different positions and a ready-to-made team in terms of guys under contract, impact players, that you can
Starting point is 00:42:31 do this and have it be successful. It will not work. So I would expect this weekend against the Packers in Lambo. This was a situation that obviously they talked themselves into, but you can't convince me Thanksgiving year two that they already know that this is,
Starting point is 00:42:52 this thing's over before it even started. And, you know, I don't really have a Fugazi here on Fugazi Friday, but I was thinking this. we have a lot of young people that listen to the show, a lot of young dudes, you know, in their 20s. And obviously, for most of you in your 20s, probably aren't making that much money, probably rent some little shitty apartment. And just, I've been there, most of us have. You know, in looking back, when you're in it sometimes, it's not always the most fun.
Starting point is 00:43:24 You don't have that much disposable income. You got 600 square feet. You don't have that much money to do fun stuff. but you don't really have responsibilities. I think sometimes, you know, Lane Kiffin's been saying this. Sometimes you're in the good old days and you don't even realize you're in the good old days. And then all of a sudden you look and you're 41 years old and you have a leak in your roof. You have a broken pipe in your driveway just spewing water all over the place.
Starting point is 00:43:55 You have a baby on the way with dealing with insurance companies and you realize, I can't even sleep. I got so much stuff. I don't even know who to call. Like where do I even start with this water main just going all over the cul-de-sac I live in? What do I do? And you can't call the landlord because you're the landlord. So you have to figure out who to call and you have no clue.
Starting point is 00:44:21 And I think sometimes younger people, it's easy to get mad, it's easy to get bitter. And I've been there. I've been mad and bitter. I didn't have more money in my bank. count. My apartment wasn't bigger or that when the AC broke that I had to call my landlord and he said a guy will be there. Can't make the day. He'll be there the first thing in the morning. And then you look back and you go, God, I wish I could just call a landlord right now to fix my problems because I got some problems. I got water coming in from the roof, coming in from the
Starting point is 00:44:53 front yard. I got neighbors looking at me side eyes. And I don't know who to call. So this is just enjoy your time being young with no responsibilities. And when shit hits the fan, you can always call someone and you put the responsibility on them. And you just sit there, open the door when they send help. And when the bill comes, you send it to that guy because you don't have to pay it. So hopefully everyone's doing well.
Starting point is 00:45:18 Put a smile on your face. And if you're a Bill's fan, I feel sorry for you. Hey, I'm Diana Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life
Starting point is 00:49:34 one hot flash and hormonal crying drag at a time. You ladies know what I mean. I'll bet you a paramedipausal chin here you do. So let's talk about it. Join me on my new podcast. How hard can it be with the Adamani Arriba where I call on my GenX squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate midlife's most fantastic BS.
Starting point is 00:49:51 All of a sudden I'd had hanginess happening on my own. I was like, what the hell is that? I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider her. how empty that nest is going to be. Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive. Wait, what sex? Dating at 45. How high can it be?
Starting point is 00:50:10 Getting naked at 50 with the new guy. That one's kind of hard. Well, that's lighting. They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try. So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter, and dive into it, unfiltered, and unbothered and ask, how hard can it be? I cannot believe I'm about to
Starting point is 00:50:26 say this out loud in public. Listen to how hard can it be with Diana Maria Riva as part of my Cultura Podcast Network available on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Okay, back at it again with my main man from the Action Network. All of our lines are presented by our friends and our partners at Hard Rock Bet. Stucky, the slate, I wouldn't call it the greatest slate in the world. We've got a couple good games.
Starting point is 00:51:03 I've had a rough year, but how are you doing, bro? going through the grind college basketball now back in the heart of college football and NFL I can't believe it's week 13 of college football week 12 in the NFL it always goes by so fast but yeah no sleep just grinding but I always tell myself it's a labor of love
Starting point is 00:51:26 I always say that I do love going through the grind whenever I get tired I'm like just think in June when you're dying for football have some gratitude so So yeah, just continuing on trying to find winners. That's what it's all about. I got my fixing. I was watching.
Starting point is 00:51:43 I needed a little sports hit on a Wednesday night. I was watching Arizona, Yukon. Dan was in rare form. I mean, he was on tilt. They lost. But, you know, college, the good thing about NIL, I feel like it's revamped college basketball. Like, college football's been rolling now for a while. It just feels like, and then I think Alabama, Illinois came on.
Starting point is 00:52:05 right after. These games just feel big. I mean, these universities, I mean, it's become pro sports light, right? Yeah, I like, I like these early season games when they're on campus in particular. Yeah, I agree. It's just such a better feel for college basketball. But, yeah, Arizona picked up a huge win.
Starting point is 00:52:24 They've been super impressive. They've won, like, they've won in a multitude of ways against really good teams so far this year. Like, they've wanted a shootout. They want a grinder versus UCLA. And they've been really impressive. Bradley's been really good closing out games. They have the stud freshman Pete. So it's,
Starting point is 00:52:45 they look really good. And it's kind of like college football that I don't think that there's going to be one dominant team. And there's like amongst the top of the, of all of college basketball, there's going to be like a lot of parity where you're going to have a lot of teams. And that makes the tournament more interesting. It's kind of like that in college football, although maybe Ohio State is that team again this year,
Starting point is 00:53:10 but you now have just like your second best team through your 10th, 12th. There's not that much separation, and it's going to make for a more interesting playoff. Although we don't need to expand it anymore. I'm seeing the Big 10 now proposing like 24 teams. We don't need to go to 24. If it was 24, Texas would be like in the driver's seat as like the 14th seat. It's like I have to watch them.
Starting point is 00:53:33 play. They're not, what are we doing? Twelve, twelve, twelve's all. And it's, they need to tweak it to, I guess they don't want to get sued, but the non-power five team or Power Four team on a given year, like Boise last year around the table, I got no problem over the course, TCU back in the day, the Utah's before, you know, those teams jumped up. They had individual seasons, but if there's not an individual season that's worthy, you don't just get a seat at the table. That's, you know, that's the thing with the NFL, like, that's the one thing with college. You're in your way, but it's still kind of subjective. Like in the NFL, it's pretty black and white, right? Which to get the seven seed, like, you might have, you're going to have to hit some certain tiebreakers or whatever, but there's
Starting point is 00:54:16 no subjectivity to the 14 teams that make it in the NFL, which in college, clearly that there's a lot. I mean, hell, Notre Dame in Miami is going to be a major story over the next couple of weeks. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I mean, maybe if you did it like, yeah, I mean, it's, it's tough to just completely worried about lawsuits and excluding half of college football. But I think eventually one day we're going to have just like FBS, FBS Light, which is like power four. And maybe there's like mega conferences. I don't even know how it's going to go. But maybe you just had like the four top conference championship. Because there's there's an argument. There's a chance that if Duke ended up winning the ACC, they might not have gotten in with four losses. Like,
Starting point is 00:55:01 you could have had two group of five teams get in over the ACC champ. So, yeah, the ACC is really down this year overall. Like, we're most likely going to get Georgia Tech who could have lost to Wake Forest. They could have lost to Boston College. Virginia, Virginia should have like four or five losses this year. Like, that's the most likely ACC championship game. So they're way down. The Big 12 is basically just Texas Tech.
Starting point is 00:55:28 Utah's playing really well with their path to get there. is very difficult. Utah would be a worthy playoff team right now. I just don't know if they're going to get in. But they need a scary team. They need, like, BYU to lose the Sinci, and they need, like, Arizona State to lose the Colorado.
Starting point is 00:55:44 Like, if BYU lose the Sinci, they're a two and a half point favorite on the road, they very well could lose. Arizona State could be the team that gets back to the Big Talt championship, but they don't have their quarterback. So. I do think their coach, I mean, over the next,
Starting point is 00:56:01 10 days. I don't think it's inconceivable that Kenny Dillingham's like to coach at LSU. Yeah. I'm interested to see what he takes because he's like all in on his university and but money always talks. So it would be a big loss for the Sun Devils because he's doing a great job there. But yeah, if you're the other game, the biggest swing game of the weekend is USC Oregon. Like the loser of that is out. The winner of that is in really good spot. to make the college football playoff. And if, I mean, if, say, Oregon wins this week and then loses next week at Washington, which is certainly possible, Washington has some offensive line injuries, two of their best players,
Starting point is 00:56:45 Boston, NFL wide receiver and Coleman and NFL future running back, I think they'll both be back. But they have some injuries worth watching. But say Oregon beats USC and then loses to at Washington next week, I mean, the Big Ten, only gets two in. And then you have one from the big 12, one from the ACC, one group of five. I mean,
Starting point is 00:57:13 you're talking maybe six, seven SEC teams, depending on what happens with some of them. Don't you think it'd be, I mean, I think Oregon is going to house USC. I mean, this is a bad,
Starting point is 00:57:23 you know, this is... USC on the road just never, they just can't travel for some reason. And honestly, even last week, they're 21, 10. And it's in the rain.
Starting point is 00:57:32 If you would have turned that off and you said, hey, you have to bet $10,000 right now who wins this game. You wouldn't be able to find a soul alive that would have put money on USC in that moment. It had, it paralleled the feeling of that Nebraska game. Obviously, the difference Nebraska's quarterback. I was just Iowa. But I just think that I would be stunned. And I'm not trying to overreact to the Minnesota game. but it does feel like Oregon's kind of figuring themselves out.
Starting point is 00:58:02 Their backup tight end is a monster, some transfer portal guy. Obviously, they're starting tight ends of stud. They just feel like this thing has got blowout. Now, their rival is Washington, so you just never know in these games. I mean, look at Michigan last year against Ohio State. I would be a little stunned if they have a really good performance this week if they lost to Washington, wouldn't you? It depends on how healthy Washington is, but when Washington's fully healthy,
Starting point is 00:58:28 The problem is Washington this year has rarely been fully healthy. And like, for example, they have a left tackle, Carver Willis, who's really good. This freshman guard, who they had to move to the right tackle. He's going to be their future left tackle. Mills, he's really good. Their tackle that he had to replace Azou party, he's pretty good. Their center hatchet's pretty good. But a team like Washington, the biggest difference between them and in Oregon and Ohio State,
Starting point is 00:58:58 Washington has no depth. So, like, they're, especially on the offensive line. Like, their backup left tackle, who's out of play, I think, three or four games. It's just because Washington had an offensive line injuries in that Ohio State game, and then their offense just crumbled. And Ohio State's the best defense in the country. If Washington's fully healthy, they are, and at home, they are a different animal. And, I mean, look, this Oregon team, they did lose at home to Indiana.
Starting point is 00:59:25 They could have lost that Iowa. it's you know it wasn't they weren't that impressive at home against wisconsin when they play a cupcake they're like the best team in the country they can put it on you and out athlete you but i'm still not all the way sold on more i so we'll see i can see washington winning that game but they have to be healthy they can't go into that game with injuries because they just that's the biggest difference between washington and some of these other up and the upper tier teams in the big ten and the big ten they obviously don't have as much talent.
Starting point is 00:59:58 But like, if you're talking Williams is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the country, they have an NFL, you know, a top five back in the country, top five receiver in the country, good play caller. And their offensive line has talent if it's healthy. But the depth beyond that is, it's Washington is yet to build out their depth. So I could see, the thing is, USC and my aid in particular has been bad on the road.
Starting point is 01:00:22 USC under Riley forever has not been able to travel. Now, it's worse when they have to go. multiple time zones. But when you mentioned that, Nebraska game, I mean, if Maraul doesn't get hurt, they lose that game. And they just haven't traveled well. And they can't defend the run. They're a little soft and finesse.
Starting point is 01:00:41 Yeah. So I'm sure that's what Oregon's going to lean on here. And I'm not sure that USC has any answers now. Could they pull off the upset? Sure. Because they do have arguably the best wide receiver duo outside of Ohio State in the entire country in Lemon and Lane. Miami's going to have to be good, though.
Starting point is 01:01:02 Like I said, he's struggled on the road because they're going to have to put up points to win this game because it's hard to see that I'm keeping Oregon in check. And Oregon should be able to control the clock. They're at home. So I think Oregon is much more at risk of losing next week than this. Okay, I was diving some NFL games. The Chicago Bears and the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently both in first place. Neither of them is favored to win the division.
Starting point is 01:01:25 I think as we sit here today, are we on the same page that Aaron Rogers won't play this week, or do you expect to see him? I think no, but you never know with Rogers. Like, I don't try to predict ever what Rogers is clearly not a catastrophic injury. It's one of those that's just kind of like, it's not concrete. No, beside people inside Pittsburgh and with Aaron, it's not, he didn't break his wrist, but it's not nothing. it's one of those if it is just a little bone tweak is it something if he falls on does it get worse you use your left hand obviously to brace for impact when you're sliding when you're getting tackled so it's it's not one of those well it's no big deal it's not throwing hand it is kind
Starting point is 01:02:11 of a big deal right if it is painful and it's one of those but also like is it going to get better is it one of those where he has to miss a month i do think if mason rudolph comes in obviously the Bears just on a down-to-down basis aren't a very good defense. But I was looking the other day because I was looking to something on Miles Garrett and then right below it was like the interception leaders. And the Bears have three of the top like
Starting point is 01:02:33 four guys that account for 13 interceptions. So it's like if you play, somehow they just get a lot of picks. Now granted, J.J. McCarthy was just throwing it right to the guys. But I don't know. I mean, this is, you tell me Mason Rudolph's playing in this game. I think
Starting point is 01:02:49 I'm hammering the bears. Yeah, at three, I wouldn't mind the Steelers. I mean, I don't think there's a huge drop off right now between Rogers and Rudolph. I think the Steelers are a good teaser option if you want to tease them off. I mean, the Bears have been very, very fortunate because of the turnovers. I mean, if you remove turnovers and look at the EPA, they're one of the worst defenses in the league. I mean, they have a plus 16 turnover margin. That leads the league.
Starting point is 01:03:15 The next best is plus 10. They have a league high 15 interceptions. They fumbled at nine times. They've only lost two. Their opponents have fumbled it 10 times. They've recovered seven of them. So the turnovers and takeaways are masking their defensive issues. They can't cover heavy personnel, and that's what the Steelers are, multiple tight ends.
Starting point is 01:03:34 The Bears are giving up with 6.2 yards per play against 12 personnel. They struggle to defend the run. They struggle to get pressure. So I think the Steelers will be able to move the ball. Now, on the other side, the Bears, like, look, these two teams are kind of mirrors, right? Like they have good records in first place. The Steelers always benefit from turnover luck. And they're like you mentioned, neither are a favor to win the division.
Starting point is 01:03:59 If there's going to be some turnover luck that's coming, and the Bears have benefited from turn of luck on offense too. Like they haven't turned it over. The Steelers are the team to exploit that. And the Steelers generally don't turn the ball over. So maybe this is the game where that happens. Because you have to remember, the Bears are 5 and 0 in one possession games. They all came in the first.
Starting point is 01:04:19 final minute against the Raiders, the commanders, the Vikings, the Bengals, and the Giants. We're not talking the cream of the crop here. I mean, it's like, it's pretty troubling that McCarthy was that bad last week. I mean, and this guy, he has all kinds. I mean, there was wide open guys all, but he has major mechanical issues right now. He can't throw the left side of the field. He's locking in his hip and he's all arm and he can't get the ball there. I mean, he has a 55% on target throw rate to the left side of the field.
Starting point is 01:04:55 The next worst among all quarterbacks is 70%. When you say on target, you're not saying completion. You're just saying in the vicinity of the target. Yes, like, was it a catchable ball for the receiver? And he's at 55. The next worst is 70%. And then he lacks touch on these short passes. So they have a lot of work to do with him.
Starting point is 01:05:15 But it's very troubling in that he was that bad. for basically the entire game. The Bears got two interceptions. They also recovered a fumble that they had within their own 10, inside their own 10. And the Vikings somehow had the lead with a minute to go. And then the Bears needs a kickoff return.
Starting point is 01:05:34 The Bears, if I was going to defend Caleb, the bears drop a lot of balls. Yes. They drop a shitload of balls. Caleb's played pretty well. I mean, he does bail from the pocket too quickly at times. Like you'll just see him 180 and then make something happen. He breaks out of a lot of sacks, though. Yeah. He does. He's very elusive.
Starting point is 01:05:55 So, but the thing that's made, I mean, the bears, why are they in first place? One, because their defense has gotten lucky with turnovers and they've gotten fortunate in close games. Two, Ben Johnson. And three, this is, you know, kind of a derivative of Ben Johnson. Their run game has been cooking. And they have been, and they should be able to run on Pittsburgh. Now, Pittsburgh's defense has been disappointing this year. They have changed, over the past. few weeks they have started to change some things schematically on a week-to-week basis. Like you saw them go from heavy man to heavy zone, more two-eye, more cover six. Like, so they're being a little bit more unpredictable, which I think is helping their cause
Starting point is 01:06:32 because they have other issues elsewhere. But this will probably be a close game. It'll probably come down to turnovers. And I, but I, there is something that the bears do have late. Like when they have the ball and you have Ben Johnson and then Caleb Williams can make things happen with his legs. like you feel confident with them in a close game. But yeah, this is down to two and a half now.
Starting point is 01:06:56 I have nothing here, but at three I would look at the Steelers. Two and a half, I probably would tease the Steelers up. But probably another close game. I mean, that's all the Bears have played outside of that Dallas game. And they easily could have three or four more losses on the season, but huge game for both teams. I think early returns than you never know with a coordinator. Like we knew Mike Vrable maybe this year is going to,
Starting point is 01:07:18 one better than anticipated a little bit, but like he's proven. He's good head coach, and he was good when he had good players. I think Ben Johnson has immediately, like, become the Midwest Kyle Shanahan. Very serious, not a big bullshit guy and just dreams about running the ball. I mean, I see a lot of similarities, their personality and the way they view football. And I think as they get better players on defense and get healthier over the years, that style is conducive assuming you stay healthy of like creating toughness on defense, running the ball in practice. Look at the Ravens for years. I think the Steelers in theory, right, I think it helps create toughness in practice.
Starting point is 01:07:54 So I've been blown away by Ben Johnson. Yeah, they're way out of the curve where like already to be in first place in that division right now. Push the pressure on the floor. It's like, okay, well, this guy is no longer just a coordinator. He's the head coach now of the Bears. Yeah. And let's talk about that. It's that game.
Starting point is 01:08:12 obviously he's under some some heat and that Giants game was for a minute you're like whoa is this he's gonna because it was cold it was weird you could kind of feel it like is something weird going to happen then Jordan Love hit a couple passes and everyone
Starting point is 01:08:26 could take a deep breath but also the Jamest experience I do think this defense has to be just licking their lips playing this kid I mean I just it might be my favorite bed of the year like he's going to go into Lambo after all this
Starting point is 01:08:42 everything going on. I read this article today on ESPN.com. I mean, you had mentioned some of the metrics of how they're just like redoing his mechanics on the fly. It's like I fall golf really closely. When guys redo their swing, one, they spend a lot of time on the range. And then when they go into tournaments, they're like, listen, I'm not expecting to play well. Yeah, it's going to take time. Yeah, it takes, I mean, from Tiger to random pros, let alone anyone in pro sports, you mechanically change someone. Look at Aaron Rogers. He got to do it in practice for three years before they ever threw them to the wolves. It's impossible at the highest level of sports, tennis, baseball, football, to change your mechanics in the middle of the season.
Starting point is 01:09:23 No fucking way. And even McCarthy's like you've got to rewire your brain. So maybe big picture it can change. I would bet against usually the guys, you get mentally broken. And you can see the way guys are looking at him. If he's able to do it, he is a, Alex Smith didn't redo his mechanics, but like mentally tough. he like with like with stood it all and then he got over the hump but that's he's rare usually it just breaks people so it's not apples to apples Alex Smith to McCarthy here but green bay
Starting point is 01:09:53 minus six and a half is my favorite bet on the board yeah it's like think about it in order to become a pro athlete in any sport it takes whether it's a jump shot whether it's throwing a football a pitcher throwing a baseball, swinging a tennis racket or golf club. The amount of muscle memory and the amount of reps that one must go through in order to just get that down is something that I just don't have a grasp of, right, to get to that level and be like a starting pitcher in baseball or a starting quarterback in the NFL. And like you said, rewire your entire brain. There are so much muscle memory and just repetition there and doing something one way. To change it is going to take time. And right now, if it's even possible.
Starting point is 01:10:50 Yeah. Right. And right now it's just broken. Like last week was, I was like, okay, it's only been a couple of starts. He's played some tough defenses. But that was the perfect game. Like there was, it was a defense who can't get pressure with a bunch of bad. backup defensive backs indoors.
Starting point is 01:11:07 And he's in a good situation. Like he has a good offensive line, a good play caller. He has good receivers. And tight in, backs and catch. I mean, he's got it all. It's like as ideal of a situation as you would want. And he just couldn't hit wide open throws, whether it's like throwing it too hard on the short ones
Starting point is 01:11:29 or just completely missing the deep ones. and I don't know how you correct that. So I'm out on McCarthy. That out route where the bears, it looked like one of their backups caught it. It might have been a wide receiver. Like well past Justin Jefferson, who was running probably like a eight-yard out route,
Starting point is 01:11:49 was like that wasn't even, even Tom, who was trying to be nice. Right? It's a Michigan guy. It was like, I, this is, I don't know where he's missing. I don't know what's going on here. What are you even going to say,
Starting point is 01:12:00 unless you're just going to completely shit on him? Yeah. it was ugly. I mean, I don't even, this day. Why does the coach keep calling go routes and deeper breaking routes? Like, I would never call those routes for them. Yeah, it's, I'm curious to see what they try to do this week on the road in Lambeau against that defense. That's going to be tough.
Starting point is 01:12:25 Now, the Packers offense, I don't, like, they, where this, they might really miss, they miss craft in general. Big time. But they might miss him more this week against the blitz. Like craft against the blitz has been so good. And usually your tight end is your safety valve, the guy you look for when you're getting blitz. And we know that Flores is going to bring the blitz. And the Packers' offense in general just,
Starting point is 01:12:52 there's been so many injuries at wide receiver, tight end, and now, you know, Jacobs, a running back. The offensive line has had injuries every week. So, like, if you look metrics, Otherwise, Jordan Love is number one in the league in EPA for dropback. There's also a ton of drops. Like you've never believed that, right? Like just watching their offense, but he's number one EPA for dropback.
Starting point is 01:13:12 But the offensive operation right now is wonky. There's something off. And it's because of all the injuries, no craft and shuffling wide receivers in and out, offensive line in and out. As a result, the Packers are struggling to, like, put it all together on offense. And as a result, they can't really build margin on teams. For example, the Panthers, like, they lost to the Panthers at home when Bryce Young threw for 100 yards. They're the Spider-Man meme with the Eagles.
Starting point is 01:13:40 Yes. I mean, they didn't punt in that game. The Packers didn't punt against the Panthers. The Panthers threw for 100 yards and won. They're giants. They, like, and you watch that game, like, there were so many drops. They drop a lot of balls. So that would be my only fear.
Starting point is 01:13:58 87's got some, I mean, it's in his head, it feels like, a little bit. He has something that are like hitting him in stride. I thought he was a stud based on last year. And this year you watch him, he goes, something's off. Yeah, he's had a couple of bad ones last week, Dubs. But, yeah, I mean, I couldn't. Chrischa Watson's infused a little life, I feel, like, into their operation. Yes, he had a huge.
Starting point is 01:14:19 That touchdown catch was legit. Sick. That looks like Devante and Rogers. Yeah, they should get readback, which will help, I think, for the Thanksgiving game against the Lions. And they're just still trying to figure out life after craft. So that would be my only concern, but I certainly couldn't look at the Vikings here. The other thing is that is worth mentioning because you're laying six and a half. The Packers, can they make an extra pointer?
Starting point is 01:14:44 I get it. There was wind, a lot of win last week in that life, but their kicking has been a disaster. I mean, no matter who they have in there all year. So that's at least worth noting. But right now, can't trust McCarthy, so it's Packers or nothing. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers. And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, name? Huge news. We created our own podcast called Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 01:15:16 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts. We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. And, well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers.
Starting point is 01:15:43 This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, people could call in and say, hey, Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it.
Starting point is 01:16:08 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and Friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 01:17:29 The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis, and I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on Clay. Jenchian went. I mean, she went down at three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lina Rabakina is arguably the best player in the world.
Starting point is 01:17:59 right now and I actually can win on any surface because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. And finding ways to win.
Starting point is 01:18:29 matter what. He's the smartest player to ever play the game. His IQ is at a level that we've never seen before. And he knows without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game. We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense. And when IT's friends stopped by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nash will get that thing.
Starting point is 01:19:04 That man, hell get the flying. He running up the court, licking his fingers why he got the ball. Like, you go through a training camp with that, I said. You figure it out real quick. Get your ass up and down the court, and you're going to get the ball. So listen to Point Game on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Someone sent me the stat that over from 18 to 22, Mahomes on 20-plus yard passes,
Starting point is 01:19:35 through like 52 touchdowns. And he almost averaged 16 yards of pass. And over the last several years, it's down under 10, and it's like five total touchdowns. And he clearly, his deep ball accuracy the last couple of years, even when guys have been healthy, it's just been a little off. Now, part of that is his report with Tyreek,
Starting point is 01:19:55 who in his prime is, I mean, truly one of the great talents we've ever seen. So you remove like Tyreek, Randy Moss, whoever, Torel Owens. There's a drop-off. But, like, I do think there is some, like, Patrick's just not quite as dominant as he was during that stretch. And there are plays to be made. He still makes plays. I defend them, like, even when his numbers aren't great, like, you can watch him.
Starting point is 01:20:15 Like, he plays. He's still making some plays. But in that Denver game, and just, I would say, of the totality of the last couple years, they masked it last year. And definitely two years ago, when they won 11 games, remember, he had that stretch where he was throwing like a pick a game. It was like seven straight games. And then it was all came to the, came to a head on that Christmas Day game.
Starting point is 01:20:34 I was like, God. But what happened? Playoffs start, boom. The dust settles during the Super Bowl. So it's like, what do you even say? But like over the last several years, Lamar, obviously this year is weird, but Josh and Lamar have been better players in the regular season. But he goes, well, fuck, I got you in January. And at the end of the day, that matters more.
Starting point is 01:20:53 Josh and Lamar would gladly trade anything in the regular season for what he's had in the playoffs, right? And especially in the AFC to get to the Super Bowl. But I do think this is a big, because it's really. weird. Like the Chiefs for five and five, they don't feel like a normal five and five team. I still think they're pretty good, but something is missing. This is a big spot at home. This, I mean, I, there's a lot of kitchen sink games. I think they threw the kitchen sink last game. Denver's good. I mean, the defense is pretty elite. But I, I, Daniel Jones going to go into Kansas City with kind of their season on the line because all of a sudden, if the Jags win, like,
Starting point is 01:21:28 you're going to find yourself so far back. You might be screwed. Yeah, it's. I, I guess that's, I like the Chiefs. I think they win by a touchdown. I mean, yeah, Lamar has nothing to show for. He's been, I mean, he could have three MVPs. Lamar over the past two seasons has 57 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He had two last week.
Starting point is 01:21:50 They were both off the receiver's hands, one off the helmet, one caught in a brain hand. Three of his other interceptions. One, a Steelers guy ripped it out of the hands of the raiden. Another one went right off the chest. He basically has two interceptions and 57. touchdowns over the past two years, which is ridiculous. I mean, Josh's game on Sunday, too, was like, Jesus. Like, this guy's, I mean, is seeing.
Starting point is 01:22:13 Yeah, and it too. I can go on to all Alent's on. Nothing to show for it. So, yeah, at the end of the day, that's all anyone's going to remember is the plows. But, yeah, the offense hasn't been the same, especially with the deep passing. I, look, there's a couple things that player. I mean, the Colts are coming off of a buy, but Daniel Jones has kind of turned back in to his true self, his true pumpkin self.
Starting point is 01:22:34 I mean, over the first eight weeks of the season, he had three interceptions. He was sacked nine times, and he only had two fumbles. So weeks, one through eight, eight games, only three picks, only nine sacks, two fumbles. Last two games, four picks, 12 sacks, six fumbles. So the pressure's getting to him. He's kind of panicking, you know, teams have to fill now on what this offense is doing. I mean, now the wild card is what can Jonathan Taylor do? He could carry them to a win just like he did against Atlanta.
Starting point is 01:23:07 Chiefs run defense a little vulnerable. It's not as vulnerable as Atlanta's run defense, especially without Diablo. But I'm sure they're going to try to lean on Taylor here. But I would agree with you, especially at three, even at a juice three. I would look at the cheese. Spags throwing everything he has here at Daniel Jones. We'll probably make some mistakes. Sauce Gardner does change the equation a bit, right?
Starting point is 01:23:29 Now he has a buy to get assimilated with that defense. They were playing man more in overseas, even with Gardnerland and a couple days per pair. And that's how you want to play the Chiefs. You want to play more man, not zone. But Kansas City still, I mean, Indianapolis is still missing Buckner. They don't get elite pressure. So I would imagine Mahomes and company will be able to move the ball. A crazy stat since 1990, this will be only the 15th time in week 11 or later that we've had a team that's five and five or worse.
Starting point is 01:24:02 So week 11 or later, a team that's under 500 or worse, favored over a team with a winning percentage of at least 80%. It's only happened 14 previous times. All 14 teams won, and they went 12-0-2 against the spread. The 5-and-5 teams, all won, you're saying? All one, and they went 12-0-2 against the spread. So only two push, the other 12 covered. So at three, yeah, I think the Chiefs for the move.
Starting point is 01:24:35 If we did a deep dive on that, do you think there were some injuries involved in some of those with quarterbacks? Yeah, and there's also like sometimes when you just have, like this is the case with this game. Like the Colts have been really good, but they've, you know, they've played a week's schedule. No one views them like the Ravens or the Bills of previous years. And then you've had a Chief's team is 0 and 5 in one score games. and they're still power rated as one of the some power is the best team in the NFL still so every year you're going to have a couple teams that are
Starting point is 01:25:07 like there's been a couple Steelers teams I think maybe the COVID year the Steelers started like 10 and one and they were like they weren't even it was like the end of Rathusberger's career and they were just winning every game by like one on Voodoo. So like you'll have when Baker got him in the playoffs right? You'll have a couple teams every year that are just they're playing way above their record.
Starting point is 01:25:29 Then you'll have a couple of teams that are unlucky. And then when they meet sometimes, that's when you'll get these teams that are favored. So just it doesn't mean that chiefs are a lot, but just an interesting nugget. So at three, yeah, I would look at the cheese. I think that they'll fluster Jones and Mahomes will do enough at home. And this is, as you mentioned, it's a massive game.
Starting point is 01:25:48 Like, Chiefs lose this. Chiefs right now, you can kiss the division goodbye. Like they're basically four and a half back, because they're four back. and they lost to the Broncos. Now they get the Broncos at home, so whatever, you could say that they're four back. But it's week 12, so you can kiss the division goodbye.
Starting point is 01:26:10 Wild card, I mean, they're basically two back because two plus back, because the Jags have beat them head to head. The Chargers beat them head to head. And now this, like the Charter is still theoretically to win the division. You lose this and you don't have the head to head. against the Colts, too, and then you're five and six. Like, I think this is maker. Like, I think of Kansas City wins this game.
Starting point is 01:26:33 They'll probably find a way to sneak in. If they lose this game, I think they're out, and they're not making the playoffs. Massive swing game for this whole season. You should go to, both should go to, like, Denver and just go to bars and tell people in our power rankings, we got the chief number one still in the league. People will lose their minds. I think my favorite, one of my favorite games on the board might be the Saints coming off the buy minus one and a half against the Falcons.
Starting point is 01:26:59 I mean, you talk about a franchise. It's sad. Seattle and Niners fans are looking. You're like, wait, the Rams have the eighth pick in the draft right now. And this could get uglier for Atlanta. London's hurt. Obviously, Penix is out. I mean, the corpse of cousins who's the high, going to be, I bet a $27.5 million
Starting point is 01:27:17 backup, like truly just like in the offseason, this guy's going to be our backup. That record's going to stand for a while. Like the cap We got a long way to go before we And I'm not talking like $14 million Daniel Jones He ends up I'm talking like This guy is going to be our backup all off season
Starting point is 01:27:35 The way they said it I don't think we see that for a long, long time And I think the Falcons man This thing I don't even think it's got as ugly as it's going to get And I actually listen Tyler Shuck I got a text from a buddy that works for the Saints He's like hey do you see what he did
Starting point is 01:27:51 I was like I'm not watching you guys So I went back and watched him I was like, God, this guy's slinging it. I can see this thing getting ugly for Atlanta. Yeah, but by the way, I'll give you one that's going to be worse. That'll never be broken. Next year, 2026 season, DeShon Watson's cap hit for the Browns is $82 million.
Starting point is 01:28:16 That's ridiculous. He's like their four-string quarterback right now. When they signed that contract, they were like, well, he's going to be so good. We'll just renegotiate. and get that thing, kind of like the DAC Prescott type thing, but it's so ugly, they'll probably end up cutting them and just accelerate.
Starting point is 01:28:31 That number could actually get bigger. Yeah, his base salary next year was $46 million, and then he has prorated bonuses that all get paid out. So his proximate... What if he just are starting quarterback next year? I just said, fuck it. Maybe. Probably not.
Starting point is 01:28:44 He might be washed. From what I saw on all these injuries, man, it's crazy. But, yeah, I love the Saints this week. This is, number one, the spot, as you mentioned, Saints coming off a bye, which I think is more beneficial in their case because you have a new quarterback, right, a rookie quarterback gets to work with the offense, build timing. And then you have the Falcons who are in a dream crusher spot. They're coming off two games that essentially ended their season. Both losses came in overtime.
Starting point is 01:29:17 One overseas, one at home, dropped the three and seven in the NFC, you're done. and their defenses on the field for a million plays in both games. You saw them wear down at the end of the Panthers game. Well, now back-to-back overtime games going on the road, three and seven, do they show up? More importantly, and so what are they going to try to do? They're going to try to – I mean, that's the corpse, as you mentioned, the corpse of Cousins.
Starting point is 01:29:38 Cousins is 42nd out of 44 quarterbacks in EPA plus completion percentage over expectation. The only quarterbacks that are worse this year are McCarthy and Gabriel. real. He's only one of four that is negative in that stat. The only other negative one is Cam Ward. And he got to play. We already saw the Falcons play with cousins and no Drake London. It was against the dolphins at home and they lost that 35, 7 or something. They got blown out. We've already seen this. Their offensive line isn't fully healthy. What are they going to try to do here? They're going to try to run it. Well, the Saints Runty is pretty good. They're seventh in rush EPA, 10th in rush success rate. So I don't know how.
Starting point is 01:30:18 The Falcons move the ball here. Drake London is so important. Like, he might be the most valuable wide receiver in the NFL because, number one, he's really good. Number two, the drop off to who else they have is massive. And if you look at their numbers, like his on-off splits, they average 5.7 yards per play with him, 4.4 without him. How about the run game?
Starting point is 01:30:40 4.7 with him on the field, 3.5 without him. Because without London, you can just load the box, worry about Bijon. that's what the that's what the dolphins did i mean his without him on the field their EPA per play is essentially equal to the browns offense the only team worse the only offense the only offense it's worse is the Titans that's crazy so there are other receivers over the past four games whether it's cousins or pennix there are other receivers not named drake london have been targeted 38 times they have 13 catches it's a it's a mess and it's a horrible spot so yeah I like the Saints here.
Starting point is 01:31:18 Shuck did look, but he's pushing the ball down the field. If Saints are pretty much fully healthy at home off a by, I love the Saints here. You know, it's funny as I saw this thing on Instagram, these Falcons fans aren't happy, and they were going on this rant that after Kyle Pitts, it was like one of the great eight or nine player stretches in, like, draft history. It's like Jamar J, Pena Sewell, you're right, Patrick Sardin,
Starting point is 01:31:46 Devante Smith, Micah, Micah, Parsons, J.C. Horn, I'm not going to exact order. Even Jalen Waddle, like, he's way better than Kyle Pitts. Basically their point was, you could have closed your eyes, taking the group of players thrown to dart, and it would have been impossible to screw up. Yet the Falcons,
Starting point is 01:32:01 big picture screwed it up, and they got the player that none of those other teams would trade their guy for. Most of them would laugh. I mean, there are multiple Hall of Famers in the group. I mean, honestly, Jamar Chase, Penae, Penae, Sule, Michael Parsons. I mean, Devante, he's going to have
Starting point is 01:32:17 a long career with a lot of numbers, right? You know it's bad when the Bengals get it right and you don't in the draft. And yeah, it's just, if it feels like the Falcons are never going to get it right, and they're never going to recover from 283. Another thing I, yeah, it kind of broke their franchise. The other thing I saw on Instagram, which I kind of hope it was true that like C.D. Lamb and George Pickens were out gambling and boozing and like puking. But again, I mean, it's Instagram.
Starting point is 01:32:46 I want that to be true because I feel like Al Davis, like back in the 70s, like that was his team. It's like Kenny, not Kenny Powers, but Kenny Stabler used to say like I'd read the playbook by the light of the jukebox. But they won. And Al didn't give a shit. John Madden, you do whatever you want. That play when George Pickens scored on Monday night, it was like, the Raiders do a little one, two, three we quit because that was, whoa. Now, different animal, Fangio. It's crazy.
Starting point is 01:33:14 you know, this is why Howie's so good, like, they're the defending champs. They were winning games, but it didn't quite look right, and he was just aggressive, aggressive. Most of these other teams, like, I get Lions fans in my DMs, like, bro, we're always talking about the next five years, like live in the freaking moment. Why aren't we going? If Howie's going after, why aren't we going after these players? He has way more hardware than we have recently. It's like, well, that's just the way he thinks, man. And that's their owner. We're like, we'll pay this guy.
Starting point is 01:33:39 And it's also like Jalen Phillips. We'll give you an eight or nine game tryout. If you're good, we'll extend you. You know, that's what they're doing. They're getting an early, a third round. They're worth paying the premium. If he's good, we have free access to him and we'll give him a contract extension. That's why they do it.
Starting point is 01:33:53 And this defense looks fantastic. So I think this is the classic, like everyone's going to be like, oh, Dallas is the – I think the Eagles defense. I mean, they're a defensive team. In Fangio, over the last couple weeks, team speed. Jalen Phillips, it feels like it has even risen the two defensive tackles look a lot better. Obviously, their linebacker plays fantastic. just their unit at from
Starting point is 01:34:15 when you get a good pass rush you can make random dbs look pretty good most people don't have like multiple good corners that's not the way it works I mean look at the ramps like the ramps it's the defensive line that changes the game so I kind of like the Eagles in this spot
Starting point is 01:34:31 where I feel like a lot of people are going to lean on Dallas just because it was recency bias yeah I mean I did I play the Cowboys plus three and a half it's come down to three if you can get three and a half I still like the Cowboys at three I do not And mainly it's, the main reason is, number one, I do think the Cowboys defense will be better after their additions against the run. Right.
Starting point is 01:34:53 I mean, you add Williams to that defensive line. You get your, you know, you add Wilson overshone back. They're front now, which can generate pressure, is going to be better against the run. And then on the back end, all they do, it's not going to be good. But they play a ton of zone. And that's what we want to do against the evils. The evil is. The evil is.
Starting point is 01:35:09 The jailer hurts his numbers versus man or here versus zone. They're here. and it's Iber Flues. You're going to play a ton of zone. And we have seen that Debel's offense is still broken. Like they came out of the buy. Now the Packers' defense is really good. The Lions defense is okay.
Starting point is 01:35:23 And there was wind in conditions. But the Lions with Pumpkin Outdoor Jared Goff. I mean, Jared Goff, if you see him with a glove on, he's basically J.J. McCarthy. He went two of 18 at one point. I mean, he was, what was he? 14 and 37, the Lions went 0 of 5 on 4th down. The NFL record is 0 of 6 that the lion set against the Patriots,
Starting point is 01:35:51 golf outdoors, shocker against Bailey Zappian. I think the lines lost 28 nothing a few years ago. And if they had a chance, if there wasn't the Phantom PI, then we got the ball back, tie. With a chance of tie, now they probably wouldn't have went down the field. But that just shows you- No chance with golf unless they ran some crazy trick-law. I'm just saying that's how limited this Eagles offense is.
Starting point is 01:36:12 And now you're just no Lane Johnson. And they've been doing... And Juergens is concussed, right? He's out, so they're backup centers in. So, like, the offensive line's not the same, which is hurting Barclay. And they're just not getting margin on teams. They're relying on their defense. And I agree that their defense is only getting better.
Starting point is 01:36:30 And their offense is getting worse. Would you put them in, like, the Denver Houston category based on the last couple of weeks now that they had Jalen Phillips? Yeah, they're up there. I mean, I still have Houston one, Denver, two, with CERT. but the Eagles are right there. I mean, Fangio out of the buy, these defenses usually trended up with like Phillips. They, you know, they got a couple of their guys back healthy.
Starting point is 01:36:51 They're, and then you have those Georgia guys in the middle. Their defense is only going to get better. And yet, Phillips looks incredible. It was a great addition by Howie. But the offense is not getting any better. I mean, the office is getting worse. I mean, they've had two of their worst offensive games from an EPA perspective over the past three years in the past two weeks.
Starting point is 01:37:10 and like they just can't build margin right they have eight wins on the year seven have come by one possession so like their teams are in it against them and i think that the dallas defense because they played a ton of zone because they're better up front i think that they can i mean everyone's getting stops against the eagles so um the only team that has it is when like the giants were down to all their backups and the giants cannot stop the run to save their life so barclay was able to go off And then on the other side, yes, the Eagles D is trending up, but I still trust the Cowboys to put up some points at home. Dax playing at an MVP level.
Starting point is 01:37:47 That offense is very tough to contain. And Dack is, Dack for whatever reason, dominates the NFC East against the spread. He's 31 and 13 against the spread against the NFC's covering by about a touchdown for game over 70%. I know Dallas on a short week, but that was an easy win.
Starting point is 01:38:04 And the Eagles, this is the third game in 13 days after two hard-fought games. So what do I think the most likely outcome here is? Eagles win by three. And like the other thing is once the Eagles get a lead, at the end of the game, they could go on like a seven-minute drive and then just kill the clock. But I think Dallas keeps it close and is feisty here
Starting point is 01:38:27 against an Eagles offense that's just in capable of building margin. And now you're without maybe the most valuable right, tackling the league, your center. And that's contributing to some of the issues that, the Eagles are having. You did mention the Raiders and do they have quit? Maybe, but I bet them minus three and a half. I kind of like them too.
Starting point is 01:38:49 Shador is not ready to be an NFL quarterback right now. Not nowhere close. What would be a third day, but if you just go third day rookie quarterback first start midseason on the road, I mean the stats would be on your side to take the Raiders, right? Yes. But I think from everything I've heard. The Brown's offensive.
Starting point is 01:39:08 line's terrible too. I mean, Crosby is still playing his ass off. I could see Crosby having a massive day. You could have like five sacks this game. Yeah, I mean, I believe, yeah, dating back to 1999, the Browns have had 17 quarterbacks make their first career start. They're 0-17 in those games. But I feel Dora's, I mean, that sucks. They like football so much. And just like the Raiders fans. It's like these people love football, which I love people that love football. And it's just after there's a certain point of like every team has a shitty couple years like the Patriots. But just like it never ends. It never ends if you're a Browns fan or a Raider fan.
Starting point is 01:39:51 It just feels like in perpetuity we're going to suck. And then you got to watch the Ravens be good. The team that left Cleveland. They've won a couple of Super Bowl. So yeah, I have a ton of friends in Cleveland, even though I'm a Ravens fan. and it's they call it the factor of sadness. I go up there for one game in a year every year. I feel for Browns.
Starting point is 01:40:13 Well, if you're a Raider fan, it's like, you know, we're all moving us in the Chargers, we might share a building. Then like several years later, we get Gruden, they get shitty coaches, blows up in our face. A couple years later, they get Jim Harbaugh. It's like, they're just going to be good.
Starting point is 01:40:26 The Broncos get Sean Payton. The Chiefs were already down. It's like, what is, we are so screwed. We got 75-year-old Pete Carroll. We got Chip Kelly, who is just running a. a great scam right now. I mean, cash and them Tom Brady private equity money. It's like this
Starting point is 01:40:41 sucks. I mean, this sucks. It's miserable. Yeah, and there was some like optimism going into the air and I kind of believed it. I thought they would be a little feisty. Yeah, I mean, it's Chip Kelly's going to disaster. Carole's not been good. The offensive line is in Chambles. It's, I mean,
Starting point is 01:40:57 you lost Colton Miller's one of the most underrated left tackles and you lost Powers Johnson is probably their best interior lineman. And it's fall into pieces. That's my one concern here. I mean, this total is down to 35 and a half. It's indoors. I think there's been two totals that have been 35, 35 and a half over the past 30 years. That is low.
Starting point is 01:41:17 I could see the under, but I'm afraid of short fields. So I'm afraid that Miles Garrett and Company could just wreck havoc on Gino. But what this comes down to to me, and keep in mind, I mentioned this last week. The Brown's defense is not the same on the road. At home, I almost always bet them. They covered again last week. over the past three seasons, the most profitable home team against the spread. It's not the Lions and degenerate Dan Campbell.
Starting point is 01:41:43 It's the Browns. They're 63% against the spread. The least profitable team on the road over the past three years is the Browns. They're 5 and 17 against the spread 22.7%. They're failing to cover by about a touchdown per game. Why? Because their defense isn't the same. They're often stinks everywhere.
Starting point is 01:42:01 Now they have tackle injuries. So, but the main. point here is I don't think Shador Sanders is ready to come into an NFL game and do anything against a competent defense. The Raiders have a decent defense. They've played some tough offenses this year. Patrick Graham's a good
Starting point is 01:42:17 coordinator. They'll take away explosive plays. They have Crosby. Adjusted for schedule. They're like 12. I mean, in fairness, George Pickens and C.D. Lamb lighting you up. It's like those guys are elite players. Yes. Especially George this year. I mean, George has been pretty dominant.
Starting point is 01:42:33 Yeah. I mean, there's just nothing to brought. But Chador, he's, from everything that I've heard and seen, he can't read Blitz. He's not ready to, and that's been the thing, his preparation and his care, and it's just not there yet. That's why he hasn't seen the field over Gabriel. He's not good. Gabriel's been one of the worst. So you would think, how can it get much worse? Well, I'll tell you, because all the people let him close to him in the Browns, we're like, it's, you know, that he's not ready.
Starting point is 01:42:58 I had the, I told you let's speak, I had the Browns plus eight and a half against my ratings. They're up six in the fourth quarter. with the ball and I thought I was going to lose my bad. It's the fourth quarter with the dominant defense. I just didn't want the Browns to have the ball. Because I was like,
Starting point is 01:43:14 he threw one of the worst picks I've ever seen. He also on a rollout was trying to throw like a little just dump off. It went, Kyle Hamilton dropped the pick six. He went 0 of 8 against the blitz with 100% pressure rate. He held the ball the longest of any. He doesn't look at his first read.
Starting point is 01:43:31 He took a sack almost It was a safety. He had another sack where he fumbled it, but the Brown's offensive linemen recovered it. The Braven's almost won that game by 21, and they were down six in the fourth quarter. So I just think it's... Well, his natural reaction, a little Caleb-y, is to take off.
Starting point is 01:43:51 Well, Caleb is a big-time athlete and has a huge arm. And he got away. Look, Shador, when he has time, he has a great arm, and he's very accurate. But right now he just can't read NFL defenses and blitzes. Like he is used to at Colorado. He would just go all the way back. And then he was able to shred big 12 defenses with really good receivers, by the way.
Starting point is 01:44:11 They're all on the NFL. And the Browns don't have that. And they don't either have bad offensive line, bad receivers. And this is a different type of speed. This is not the Big 12 is the NFL. So not to say Shador can't ever be good. But right now, he's not ready. I mean, last week was a disaster.
Starting point is 01:44:29 There will be a lot of eyeballs on this game that no one would have watched two weeks. Yeah, now it's a lot more interesting. I laid it with the Raiders. It's disgusting. Who wants to lay points with the Raiders team, but I did. By the way, here's a stat. Because you can go back to the last preseason game that Sanders played. He played against the Rams who sent their scout team.
Starting point is 01:44:49 They didn't send, I forget who started for the Rams in that game. They went to Cleveland. It was like a Saturday afternoon. It was like a noon kick. They didn't play anybody. And it was like a third. string defense. And I think he had like five, he got with sack like five or six times in a quarter. But over the, including that game and then last week's game, over the last, the last 31 times
Starting point is 01:45:16 that Shadurr Sanders has dropped back, the Browns have negative seven yards. 31 dropbacks, negative seven yards. That's stunning. Okay, I can't wait. Okay, speaking of the Rams, I mean, were you on the Sean Tucker train before that performance the other night? I'll be honest, I didn't know much about him, but I immediately googled him. Syracuse guy. He's bringing some juice that... He can scoot. That they've been missing without Bucky.
Starting point is 01:45:56 Hey, it's us to Jonas Brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, name? Huge news. We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it.

Starting point is 01:46:20 what we should call it. We were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band before Jonas Brothers. This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing,
Starting point is 01:46:36 a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say Hey Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas, and offered it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series because when they don't have Rudy in the lineup, he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid. He has to guard Julius Randall. And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.
Starting point is 01:49:44 And when IT's friends stop by, like Quentin Richardson, we dive into some playoff history too. Steve Nass would get that thing. That man, hell get the flying. Starting point is 01:50:24 I know it was on Monday night when the schedule came out, but like people would, like there'd be a decent amount on the line. I'm like, you're crazy, but there is for both teams. Especially for a wild card tiebreaker too. Yeah, I mean, well, what about, I mean, they still play Tampa twice. I mean, Tampa's just, it felt like they were just going to run away. with it because we viewed the Atlanta Falcons as being the team that would be chasing them. Turns out as the Carolina Panthers, it's not inconceivable. I mean, the 49ers are rolling out a UFL defense. So if Purdy, McCaffrey and Kittle and Pearsall's back, if they're scoring
Starting point is 01:50:57 points, probably be okay. But if they have an off day, that defense could win in a shootout. I don't think most people realize, Jacoby percent just threw 450 yards. NFL record for completions in a game. If you would have told me his stat line to going out. into that game. I'd be like, oh, the Niners probably going to lose this game, 40 to 30 or something, you know? Yeah, they got a kick return. They had a bunch of turnovers and then they had a 98-yard kick return. Otherwise, that game probably, you know, the Niners probably would have won, but it would have been like 40 to 30. It would have been tight. Yeah, it would have been tight. They're going to
Starting point is 01:51:28 play in a lot of tight games with that defense. Yeah. I just, I'm going to take Tampa six and a half here. That was a massive win for the Rams, which is crazy. He throws all these picks and he does not look good. It's not like balls are getting tipped. I mean, his picks were hitting guys in their chest. The one jump pass thing that he did is like, Sam, I'm your fan, but what are we doing here? Still covered, but I think I'm going to take Tampa here plus six and a half. Yeah, that speaks to the Seahawks defense that's pretty elite. They threw four picks and they were able to. Stafford threw for 130 yards. Yeah, they still had a kick to win it. So we'll see if the bucks get any healthier here, especially at seven, definitely would look at the bucks.
Starting point is 01:52:22 Here's like, so one of the things that the Rams are doing lately is they're using 13 personnel. Over the past month, I think they've used it like 40, 45% of the time. So they're using like three tight ends on the field at the same time. And that's kind of part of a bigger trend in the NFL this year. And the Ravens have kind of been ahead of the curve, right? They were doing it with a lot of the 12 personnel with Likeley and Andrews and then we're fullback in there and record. And then you have Lamar and like, so it was like a heavier offense.
Starting point is 01:52:55 Why was that advantageous? Well, most importantly, defenses aren't used to every, all the other weeks you're playing 11 personnel, right? And it's the same kind of offenses and spread. So, you know, these things are cyclical. It's become a heavy spread league while like college. Yeah. And then offenses adjust. So now you're saying like, look at the Steelers. The Steelers are running out there like two, three tight ends all the time. The Seahawks are going heavy personnel, heavy play action. And they're not even running it well, but they're throwing it really well. And now the Rams, one of the best offices in the hell, they're going like three tight ends, 40% of the time. So one of
Starting point is 01:53:32 the biggest issues with that that you see from NFL teams is they are matching, they are matching these heavy personnel formations with their base defense, which is the wrong approach. And what I mean by that is so if you have a bunch of tight ends out there, a lot of teams will say, okay, let's put linebackers out there. We got to stop the run. We got to stop. But teams are throwing out of this and they're throwing to their tight ends and they're creating mismatches against non-cover guys. The best way to approach this is you don't match the formation. You match the down and distance, right?
Starting point is 01:54:10 So if it's like a passing down, you have your nickel in there. The team that does it the best, now you can't, in order to do that, if you have like a really good nickel that could also be basically a linebacker and cover, the Seahawks already have one of those, and Nicky even more, the rookie out of South Carolina. the Seahawks match base on heavy personnel only 20% of the time that's the lowest by far so basically they just always have their nickel out there gives them a lot of flexibility and they can still defend the run the league average is 80%. Two teams that do a good job in doing
Starting point is 01:54:50 this that are around 50% are the bears and the box. So the bucks do a good job of doing this, which is really important against the Rams. They're not just going to, when the Rams are up to three tight ends, they're not going to bring in all their linebackers. They can still, they're going to still have their cover guys out there, which is important because the Rams can really still throw and do a lot out of that formation. And the reason the Bucks can do that is because their run defense is really good
Starting point is 01:55:17 just put their guys up front and they don't have to really worry about it. So a little in the weeds there. I don't know if that all made sense. But from that perspective, I think the Bucks, will be able to handle some of this 13 personnel stuff that's giving other teams issues. But one of the reasons it didn't in Seattle is because they're not matching. They're able to kind of play nickel and still contain the run
Starting point is 01:55:37 and then cover all the guys that the Rams are throwing to. So the bucks aren't as good at it as Seattle, but their run to you are just as good. And they're not matching with base as often as a lot of these other teams they're doing, which is a major mistake in my opinion. And I think eventually all these defenses will catch on. And you've got to get more of these. hybrid safety nickel linebacker guys who become so much more important.
Starting point is 01:56:01 And then you're able to do what the Seahawks do. So, yeah, I don't mind taking the seven here with the Bucks. But a huge game. Like if the Bucks lose and they're seven point dogs and the Panthers winning the shootout, the Panthers are in first place on Tuesday morning. And it's a huge game in wild. card tiebreakers and yeah so the
Starting point is 01:56:30 the Panthers have been feisty I mean this is all that also Tina went on the road and won at Green Day they're you know Bryce Young's playing better they can run the ball Technic Millen's really good so yeah two really important games in that division
Starting point is 01:56:44 and especially for the 49ers like because as you said they're probably going to lose some shootouts, win some shootouts of every game is so important in the NFC which is just going to be an all out war I mean I can't this is the first time in a very long time. Now granted, I'm a Ravens fan
Starting point is 01:56:59 that I look at the playoff picture and the projected matchups, especially the chiefs aren't in there. Imagine if the Ravens don't get in either. That I'm like, I can't wait for the NFC compared to the AFC. I mean, like right now in the NFC, you're talking...
Starting point is 01:57:19 Well, you got a couple... I mean, Tampa, L.A. is like kind of an early season playoff game. That Seattle Rams game, early season playoff game, this 49er Carolina game. Assuming Tampa loses, you know, there's not as much pressure on Carolina. They lose. They still control a lot of their destiny because they play them.
Starting point is 01:57:37 I do think there's a ton of pressure on the 49ers, given how Seattle's not going away. Obviously, the Rams would be rolling. They have the Browns, Cleveland, the following week, and you mentioned this, Schwartz owns Kyle Shanahan a couple years ago. And the Browns almost always beat. They beat them last year. They're in every game. Their defense is good at home.
Starting point is 01:57:59 It would probably be bad weather, pretty holding on to the ball. He's got a little golf to him. It's not as good in, I mean, you see him in a dome. I mean, it looks fantastic. You know, you get them in that inclement weather. It would be cold, windy, wet. That Browns game is tricky. You were told me at the beginning of the season that 49ers win 10 or 11 games.
Starting point is 01:58:16 I would have circled that. Like, that's probably a loss going into their buy. But you win this thing. You're eight and four. You get a little breathing room. Okay, you lose that. You still control. your own destiny against the bears the following week who are going to start playing the Packers and the Lions.
Starting point is 01:58:29 That thing can get a little weird. I think this is game at home, Monday night football. You win this game, you're 8 and 4. You got a pretty good path to get to that seven seed and pretty remarkable accomplishment given the injuries. But given your defense, I mean, McMillan, that, listen, I was like, I don't know, man, this kind of big guy, he's not that fast. I get he was really productive in the Big 12 at Arizona. I've seen this song and dance before. He looks awesome. That's a good pick. Even Leggett, now granted,
Starting point is 01:58:59 kind of weird early start to his career, did look pretty good. Made some plays last year. Showed some explosion, or last week, excuse me, against Atlanta. If they can get him going a little bit
Starting point is 01:59:08 with McMillan, their offense, they do got a little pop to him. Yeah, and they can run the ball, and you can run on San Francisco was not getting any pressure right now. Zero.
Starting point is 01:59:18 So Young can just sit back there. This is not an easy game for the Niders. Like I would not. I would not trust with the points just because their defense is so atrocious. Yeah, I took the, I took the seven. I can't trust in the win by margin. Like, you have to trust the win by 10 or more.
Starting point is 01:59:30 Plus the back door would be very easy against that defense if you need it. But yeah, the NFC's crazy round. The Lions aren't in the playoffs at the season ended right now. And neither are the Panthers. And it's pretty wild. I mean, the matchups in the first round,
Starting point is 01:59:44 be 49ers at Rams, Packers at Bears, Seahawks at Bucks, Eagles by. Like that's intriguing. Whereas, you know, like in the AFC, you got the top seeds are like Daniel Jones and Bo Nix and Aaron Rogers
Starting point is 02:00:01 and you got the Chargers without an O line, the Jags. Like the NFC right now, as it currently stands, is way more intriguing than the AFC. Well, Stucky, enjoy the weekend.
Starting point is 02:00:19 And we will reconvene, next week going in a turkey day.
