Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer, Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.
Starting point is 00:00:23 Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert from the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. Joe and I are both lifelong Star Wars fan, so we're celebrating May the 4th with a brand new week of fun, thought-provoking Star Wars-related episodes.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Join us as we tackle science and culture topics from a galaxy far, far away, such as the biology of tauntons and wampas on the ice planet hot, or the practicality and corporate business sense of the Sith ruling. of two. Listen to stuff to bowl your mind on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The volume. What's up, guys?
Starting point is 00:01:48 Welcome back to three rounds. So I'm in the midst of a bit of a big stretch because last week I was in Vegas for UFC 285. This week I go back to Vegas and then I head off to London. But in between the travel, you guys know the champ loves a good fight. I'm always down for a scrap. So let's get to the fight. I'm going to show you
Starting point is 00:02:09 I'm experienced Round one John Jones is the heavyweight champion of the world and he already has his sight set on his next challenge We had to wait three years to see Jones at heavyweight And he said That he would dominate
Starting point is 00:02:29 He said that he would deliver But to just say that he delivered Would be a massive understatement It would be almost almost an insult to say that Jones delivered on the promise that he said at heavyweight after all this time. And I mean, it was three years, but the reality is we've been waiting for this guy to fight at heavyweight since 2011.
Starting point is 00:02:51 People I've been asking. Well, he won the fight against Cyril Gahn this weekend. He's already got the next one. He's fighting Stephen Mealchich. And it's a big one because it's at International Fight Week. You guys know how big international fight week is. We have fights across the weekend. You have the Expo.
Starting point is 00:03:06 You have demonstrations, you have UFCX. You have so many different things that encompass international fight week. And now you also have a fight for the heavyweight championship for the world. Steve M. Emiot is considered the greatest heavyweight of all time. But when you look at the opening odds, I think it speaks to the perception of John Jones and what people saw John Jones do last weekend. This guy's been instilled as a massive favorite. Now, it isn't as big as Amanda Nunes is favored in mode of her fight.
Starting point is 00:03:36 most of her fights, but Jones is a big favorite to get past Miochich, dude is a minus 375 favorite. Miotich comes back at plus 2,7. John Jones says that he is going to finish Steepen Miochich, and he
Starting point is 00:03:52 told the heavyweight goat that he better be ready. Guys, I spoke about this on DC and RC. It won't be hard for a fight to be tougher just because this one took two minutes and it didn't look like Cyril Ghan was ready for the challenge that was in front of him.
Starting point is 00:04:11 And I always have a difficult time with this, right? Because Cyril Gond is fun. Cyril Gond is a buddy of mine. Cyril Gond is a guy that I really do like. And a guy that in a lot of instances I look up to in regards to his ability to move in the octagon, his assent has been very quick. This isn't something that has taken a decade. Cyril Gons has been fighting for five years.
Starting point is 00:04:35 So it gets a bit tricky for me when I talk about this because I don't want to disrespect the guy that I like so much. But it was a two-minute fight. It didn't take long. So to say that Miotches will be tougher, all you got to do is go for two minutes and 20 seconds. And it's already tougher. Miotich can box.
Starting point is 00:04:53 Miotchus can wrestle at Cleveland State. Miochich won the Iron Man tournament. And if you know wrestling, you know how tough that tournament is for high school athletes. But Jones can wrestle. Jones is a junior college national champion. Honestly, was a highly regarded recruit,
Starting point is 00:05:10 but a lot of the other things were why he didn't get recruited or go to one of the big universities. But John Jones had letters from Kail Sanderson, John Smith, all the best college wrestle coaches in the country wanted John Jones the athlete. When you look at these two in terms of a fight, Stipe is a Golden Gloves boxing guy too,
Starting point is 00:05:29 and Stipe has championship level experience. I think that is probably going to be the thing that allows for him to compete better than most. Do I think Stipe Mioch is a better striker than Cyril Gahn? No, I don't. I think Cyril Gond's a better striker. So if this fight is just a stand-up fight, I would think that Cyril would do better against John Jones,
Starting point is 00:05:52 but the reality is it's mixed martial arts, and as we saw last weekend, Jones has an ability on the ground that a lot of heavyweights maybe haven't seen before. Cyril looks shocked. Stipe Miochish will not be shocked. when he's locked in the octagon with John Jones. But John Jones will not be shocked fighting the greatest heavyweight of all time,
Starting point is 00:06:13 at least in most people's opinions. But John Jones's debut was as good as it gets, guys, for him, his team, and the UFC. And as I stated, Stepe will be tougher. But let me pose this question to you. Say Jones does what he promises again, dominate Stepe. Then the question becomes, who can challenge him? in his division. It's a scary thought.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:07:01 Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard radio app. Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A win is a win. A win is a win. I don't care what I'm saying. Yep, that's me, Clifford Taylor the 4th. You might have seen the skits, the reactions, my journey from basketball to college football,
Starting point is 00:07:18 or my career in sports media. Well, somewhere along the way, this platform became bigger than I ever imagined. And now I'm bringing all of that excitement to my brand new podcast, The Clifford Show. This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated.
Starting point is 00:07:37 One week I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment, and the next we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Cliverts Show isn't just a podcast, it's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me, or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to the Cliverts Show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or we're you get your podcast. And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok
Starting point is 00:08:07 podcast network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tap little Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people. I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Little Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back at it podcast. I'm Sam Jett. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick it here, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode, with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 is big to me, not just because of crack. I'm down to talk about crack on day, but just so you know.
Starting point is 00:08:44 I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack, so I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have AIDS on the table right now, so. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:00 For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to look back at it on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Round two. So Valentina Shevchenko says that she wants a rematch against Alexa Grasso. Grasso's eager, Grasso's willing. But then I ask the question, like, how different does the fight play out? How big of an opportunity was it for Alexa? she reached that level again?
Starting point is 00:09:39 I question, what did I take away from the fight most when I watched these two? But Valentina has said, I want to fight her again. I want a rematch. Obviously, Grasso was down for that, right? Because why would she not want that? Why would she not want to fight Valentina again? Valentina was dominant for a long time, and if anyone warrants a rematch, it's her. It's the same type of thing with Edisania, right?
Starting point is 00:10:03 Adesania lost, but you always had the idea that if he ever, Ask for it, he would get it. Now, a lot of different things went around Paheda. His name was getting called by a lot of people. And I think that made Izzy's decision happen much faster. I don't necessarily know if he would be fighting him again in April if we didn't hear Kamzat Chimayev asked for him. If we didn't hear Jamal. He'll starting to talk about him.
Starting point is 00:10:32 If we didn't hear the backstory with him and Hill and Gloved to Cher, I don't know that. But back to Valentina, she should get the rematch. She should. It should be an easy decision if that's what she wants. But I kind of got to wonder what does she have to change? Because here's the deal. She made a mistake and she was very open about that. But I don't think it was that simple.
Starting point is 00:10:56 I really don't think it was that simple. Partly because Alexa Grasso was winning the stand-up, we have so long thought of Valentina as an unstoppable force on the feet. but because Alexa was having such success in the stand-up, she heard her very early in round one. She almost forced Valentina's Jeff Chanko to wrestle. She almost made her pivot to a different game plan in order to stay in there and compete with her.
Starting point is 00:11:21 That's how good Alexa Grosso was on that night. On that night, she was so prepared that she made one of the best strikers we've seen across all divisions, all genders in the UFC, turn into a wrestler. Last time we saw that was against Jessica Andrage, but that wasn't because Androge was hitting her. So there's a difference. People like to make, you know, comparisons.
Starting point is 00:11:46 This was different. Valentina had to wrestle, Alexa Grasso, because Alexa's hands and her confidence in the feet was presenting problems for her. She did make a mistake. But is it a mistake if it's something that Alexa and her team saw in the buildup and saw in the planning of it? because I heard these stories about Alexa Grasso training for that spinning back kick, and I thought, oh, humbug, sure, right? You guys have so much foresight, and then a video comes out of her in the back doing it. I was talking to Javier Mendez, and he was like, to have the balls, to be training that,
Starting point is 00:12:24 preparing for a unique attack like that, tells you how locked in Alexa and her team were for the fight. So then again, who has the bigger upside? I was looking at my phone the other day. And I had a message from Alexa Grasso. I don't know what we were doing, but there was a direct message from Alexa, and I think we came across each other, and I had maybe Mr. or something.
Starting point is 00:12:52 I had an apology. Alexa told me, hey, I understand it. We're all busy. I appreciate your comments in my fight. I'm working very hard to become the best strawweight in the world. She's not the best strawweight in the world. She's the best flyweight in the world. She's the best flyweight in the world.
Starting point is 00:13:03 Her upside continues to be high. So the former champ does want a rematch, and she is entitled to that with eight title defenses. But the question does become, is Valentina really want it, or maybe, maybe she should reassess and then revisit this matchup later because I think every time they match up,
Starting point is 00:13:25 it's a very tough fight for the former champion. Oh, I'm tired. I'm on the stool. I got hit with some body shots. I'm a little worried. Guys getting into me, dig it. Okay, but I got to get off the stew and it's time for round three. I got to get up and I got to fight round three.
Starting point is 00:13:50 I'm the king of the ground, right? I'm the king of the ground for a reason. So round three. Nick Diaz wants to fight. He wants it as soon as possible. He told MMA junkie that he wants to fight ASAP. He don't want to fight John Jones, but he wants someone more along the line of Israel,
Starting point is 00:14:05 Eresanya or Alex Paheda because he always wants to fight the best. And I get it. He's a savage. He's a dude that's been around. He's a dude that's fought the best and the best. He's a dude that's won against the best of the best. But not to be a Debbie Downer, not to be a hater, like a lot of people try to call me. The last time we saw Diaz wasn't the same guy that we used to seeing.
Starting point is 00:14:33 And if we're being completely honest, he was a shell of himself. And he was the one that called the Robbie Lala fight. Losing that fight by retirement in the third round. Retirement. I love that he had the foresight to say, hey, this is not my night, I'm done. That's being a long-time veteran, a guy that's been in some of the biggest fights that we've seen. But he retired. In the fight, he said, I'm done.
Starting point is 00:15:05 I mean, this is not me like chitting in his witties. Like, I like Nick Diaz. I think he's the man. But I cannot ignore the facts because we got to remember who Diaz was. But it can't stop there. We got to remember who we saw fight last time because it was not the same guy. And with legends, we tend to lie to ourselves. People always tell me stuff like, D.C. one more.
Starting point is 00:15:31 I'm not good enough anymore. I'm not. I'm not good enough. DC one more fight. Give it one more. We got, I want to see you again. I am not good enough to fight at 43 years old. I cannot compete with the best of the world. I can't be the world champion. That's me. Be it completely honest. I'm not good enough. I'm not the guy no more. I'm not the killer that I once was. But is Nick? Right? We can all love him the same. But it's hard to think that he's just going to turn the clock back. He's 39 years old. We got to keep that in mind, right? We got to keep the facts in mind on the forefront. Who these guys are? So when you get the outlier, right?
Starting point is 00:16:18 The Randy Couture becoming the champion 44. When you get the Glover to share becoming the champion 43, these guys live the lifestyle of champions even into their 40s. Forties is essentially the expiration date for fighters. Again, there are outliers, but it's not the norm. So to expect Nick Diaz to just come back and be that guy again, it's unfair to Nick. Now, I give you a solution. I'd like to see him in Bellator, honestly.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I believe that Scott Coker would take care of him, even though I feel like the UFC tried with Robbie Lawler, but even Robbie was a little bit too much for him because he's not the same guy. And there's no shame in that. There really isn't. We all age, man. And Father Time always wins. but he seems to have the fighting spirit because he's now saying,
Starting point is 00:17:09 I want to fight. I want to be in there. But if he goes to Belator, maybe the level's not as high. Maybe he doesn't have to go in there with absolute killers because Robbie Lawler looked like a killer. Even when Robbie Lawler lost to Brian Barberina, he looked fantastic early. And Robbie's agent, Robbie's agent.
Starting point is 00:17:30 So yes, let's see Nick Diaz fight again. But let's not forget who we're going to see when we're. go in there because no matter how hard we squint we will not see the same guy now to take a full commitment from diaz to even resemble the guy that we knew before but but and i will say this there is a person who has the fighting spirit the warrior spirit to turn it back just once it's nick diaz because i've seen it time and time again so maybe for one more night nick be it Nick Diaz can be that guy, but I don't know if I would bet on that. And now for my final thought.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Guys, I love the support that you guys have given me through this YouTube channel to ESPN to the volume. I love in each other one E4 how much you have uplifted me. We're also in the midst of a massive stretch in the UFC, right? First of your favorite views have been great. Let's live in this. Let's love this moment. Let's love the fights and the ability to watch these great athletes compete time and time again. It's off to Vegas tomorrow for Peoria-Yan versus Marab Duolosvili,
Starting point is 00:18:38 and then off to London for Usman versus Edwards III. It don't get much better than Miami for Edasanya versus Paheda. Guys, live in a time where fights are as good as they've ever been. It's not even to mention this week in Bellator. Usman and Omega Meadow versus Benson Henderson. Guys, M.M.A. as a whole is as a whole. good as it's ever been, and it's only going to get better. So live in it, love it, enjoy the content, enjoy the fights,
Starting point is 00:19:11 and start to bring new people in to watch this beautiful sport that we all love so much. It's a great time to be an MMA fan or somebody working in the business. Till next time, guys, like, subscribe, tell your friend to tell your friend that DC has a YouTube channel. Peace. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy,
