Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an IHeart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Hey guys, it's us. The Jonas Brothers. I'm Joe. I'm Kevin. And I'm Nick. And guess what? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:00:12 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. We get to ask other people questions because we're sick and tired of being asked questions. Well, sick and tired is a strong way to put it. But, you know, tired and sick. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you.
Starting point is 00:00:30 you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and friends on the ice. Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:04 What's up, fam? It's Isaiah Thomas. And I'm C.J. Toledano. It's our favorite time of the year on our podcast, Point Game, the playoffs. We're digging into the biggest surprises of the season. And I'm looking back on some of my greatest playoff moments. If we didn't talk ever again, I was crying. You just understood.
Starting point is 00:01:19 That's how personal it got. Wow. Then after that game seven, Marquis'clock, he's like, you know, I love you, dog. You know, it's all love. This was just playoffs. This was just basketball. So listen to Point Game on the, iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Here's something that should not be as complicated as it is, getting a racist statue removed. And here's something that should be a whole lot easier than it is, getting a new one put up in its place. I'm Akila Hughes, and Rebel Spirit Season 2 is about both of those things. As I was watching these statues come down, I was thinking about what it meant that I grew up in a majority black city in which there were more homages to enslavers than there were to enslave people. Listen to Rebel Spirit Season 2 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, baby? We're here.
Starting point is 00:02:06 We're here again, man. Fourth and shout, man. In my humble opinion, man, sitting with one of the best cornerbacks to ever play the game. Spend some time in Cleveland. Spent some time in Pittsburgh. A Florida Gator. Mr. Joe Hayden. Come on, man.
Starting point is 00:02:28 Thank you, yes, sir. Thank you, welcome, thank you. Listen, listen, before we start, I know, we're from Louisiana, right? Yes, sir. Can we get a was-zam? You know, like, what's adding? That's close enough.
Starting point is 00:02:38 That's close enough. That's close enough, man. And before we even started talking, we're SEC guys to the debt, right? I know in my years at LSU, we beat the dog shit out of Florida. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah, your time, your time.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Yeah, my time, right? So I know there is history there, you know, so, My thing, by me saying this, right, who has the better college, LSU or Florida? In your opinion, because we're going to see what we said. This is the thing. I'm not a liar. Right now, LSU got it going.
Starting point is 00:03:12 You know what I'm saying? Like my time when I was there, y'all wasn't rocking with us. We had Teebo, Percy. We had our time, that was our time. Those three, four years we was there, nobody was rocking with us. But y'all's longevity, borough, all that, dissing to do. So y'all got it. I'm going to be honest.
Starting point is 00:03:28 But you know what I'm saying? SEC, I respect that. I love it. But we got to get there. I was talking to Lenny before you got here about like there's like this video. I don't even know if it's still on YouTube no more. It was of y'all like, oh, 18, like throughout the year, like practicing, fighting each other, doing like big cat. I think y'all called it something else.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Like, what? Madreels? Yeah, exactly. Yes. Doing that. The Tebow speech. Yes. Like just that whole era of like dominant football, bro.
Starting point is 00:03:56 Can you talk about that team a little bit? bit like obviously you know again y'all guys national champions right so like can you talk about that team a little bit the personalities you know what was your personality like then you know what mean compared to incident in the league you know it was it was crazy we had a great team but we had so much talent on that team with percy with tbo with myself with a major right the pouncy twins Aaron Hernandez came in with us that class so when we say different personalities yeah we got a lot of different things going on you know what I'm saying cam newton was my first roommate there so him back up to Tebow like just trying to figure out if he was going to get in
Starting point is 00:04:33 Tebow was the golden child though like he didn't do no wrong he didn't drink he didn't smoke he didn't curse he led by example you know what I'm saying a real godfair man and he worked hard but like when we go to those weight rooms those mat drills all that stuff it was crazy so urban Meyer we was doing some of the mad drills bro like when we were choking each other out yeah that he would be locked up bro for some of the stuff that we did but it grew character it's But it made y'all, right? It gave y'all the attitude where, like, I watched a documentary, see, I didn't know too much about y'all, right, in the 2008 era.
Starting point is 00:05:07 And we were talking about different errors with different teams. I know you've seen LSU 2011 team, right? And also LSU 2019 team with Joe Burrow, right? Yes. How would you guys stood a chance against each, those two teams? That'll make a good game. I like us. Yeah, honestly.
Starting point is 00:05:25 I like us. Only team that I ever think that could be. beat us was the U. where Air Reed and Clinton Porter's, and they had backups that went to the home fame. That meant Ohio State was going at it. But I said the only team I think that they could maybe probably beat us was the U.
Starting point is 00:05:41 you know what I like us first. Everybody else, just Norris Jenkins on one side, me on the other side, whoever you ever see I like to see what's going on. You know what I'm saying? You can't give us a chance, do you know? No, it's a great game. It's a game, but I'm not going to just be like,
Starting point is 00:05:54 no, unless you all got that way. Hell, this one, I'm standing on my 10. I like the Gators versus anybody. Miami might be able to get us out of the way, but anybody else, it's going to be, we're going to fight. No, you mentioned Cam Newton being your roommate. Caminole's the backup quarterback. Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:06:08 But you also, you got a quarterback background too, I feel like people don't know enough about that. You know what I mean? Can you talk about, like, having a roommate in Cam Newton? And I saw a story you said, you walk in a crewbie room. He was like, damn, it's Tim Tebow here. Yeah, New here. Then I walk in the receiver room.
Starting point is 00:06:25 It's Percy Harvin here. Yes, bro. Murphy, Louis Murphy, I think, here at the same time. Like, let me go be a DB, bro. I was trying to get in and play. Right. I wanted to go there. They said I was going as an athlete, but I felt like I was going to be a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Nobody couldn't tell me I was going to play quarterback. Watching Michael Vick, I'm like, that's me. I'm about to do that. You know what I'm saying? So I got recruited there, and then when I got into that room, and I seen Cam, and he wasn't getting in. And Tiwo was in there, and he was something like this. Oh, I'm definitely not playing.
Starting point is 00:06:53 Like, I can bounce him to go see what's up. Go to receiver. Percy there. I'm trying to play. Let me go to DB. Corners wasn't as good. There we were solid. Coach Meyer said,
Starting point is 00:07:02 bro, you can start as a corner as a true freshman. If you don't like it, we'll trade you back to offense. I went there, got Freshman All-American. Call my dad. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:07:10 you're trying to go to the league, son. Like, if you got a freshman all-American, like that's something that we could do. Corner, 5-11. You're not the tallest. Like, you can make something happen. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Locked in. At that time, though, 5-11-Corn. They went too many of the air. 5-11 corner was cool. 5-11 quarterback. Not too many of them. They're looking at the quarterback,
Starting point is 00:07:27 short black dude, like, not prototype. We need you 6'4, 250 and throwing that dot, you know what I'm saying? I want you to like, you're saying that now, like it's not,
Starting point is 00:07:36 that's not normal, right? Like, you was the number three elite in the nation. Yes. Right? And it's trying to find, trying to find your niche to make an automatic,
Starting point is 00:07:45 like, impact as soon as you come on the field, right? So from you saying you went from quarterback, it's not going to work. Not happening. Wire receiver,
Starting point is 00:07:53 not going to work. Then to go to the cornerback that shows like, you know, you're definitely a different. Different. Different. For sure, for sure. I think the thing that helped me out too was the quarterback helped me to know the game. You know what I'm saying. I understand route concepts.
Starting point is 00:08:09 Then I went to receiver. You know what's going on. Now I'm going to DB. I got a tackle. They say we can't catch. You know what I'm over there knowing what's going on offense. Just getting more smooth. Learning the techniques and stuff like cover two is cover two.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Cover four is cover four. You learn that. Now I'm looking like, what is. what they're about to do. If you're running a slant and I know you're running a slant, there's nothing can't nobody do. I just got to bait the quarterback and start playing with people. So once you get into that, that's when I'm like, oh no, it's not even about just one-on-ones.
Starting point is 00:08:36 That's when I first came into it. Playing corner, I'm going to make sure he don't catch the ball. Right. Boom, locked in. You start getting older, you start understanding his splits, his concepts are, I know what we got. What are they about to do? So that's just get smooth. She cold.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Yeah. What's awesome about that is I had a, you know, I wanted to actually, you know, I wanted you about when you're preparing for a receiver now we're talking about NFL right when you prepare for a receiver do you ever weigh how good the quarterback is in that equation you know what I mean like yeah 1,000% because it's not your it takes you got to run the great route and the quarterback got to put the ball there sometimes quarterback are throwing receivers open there sometimes I'm like man how did he get that there right there's nothing you could do great routes and great passes are always going to be great coverage if you got a quarterback
Starting point is 00:09:22 that's throwing a janky ball, nothing you can do. That joint is, I ran the, I ran a comeback perfectly. You threw it inside. That makes me get another step. So I'm like, if your quarterback's not good, that makes you, you worse. And it's not your bad. So, so, so our receiver is only as good as his quarterback? Yeah, honestly.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Because you can't, you mean, you can only do so much. If he put in the ball, you'll, you all work together. Everything works together. I'm just happy you putting it out definitely people in the spot. You got sorry quarterbacks, they're not throwing the ball in the right spot. Like, and it's time. receivers got to be at that right spot some of that stuff quarterback's got to see it open first no quarterback I'm believing in this he gonna be at that spot at that time I'm just throwing it regardless so you come
Starting point is 00:10:01 off that bang banging the balls there instead of a dude waiting giving me some time to come get it safety being able to break on you setting people up yeah like they're throwing concussion protocol balls right which is why recovery speed at your position is is that's what matters right matter for sure for you mentioned something else about like throwing about timing and and throwing And obviously that speaks to your quarterback background. That helping you be a better defender. So I guess the flip to that is, you know, there's also a saying that says a cornerback is also only as good as it's D-Line. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Do you believe in that? Or is that, you know, is that a misconception? No, a thousand percent. If your quarterback's standing there, like when I was playing versus A-B, that was the main thing, I would have him on the comeback. Your quarterback is able to scramble a little bit, that scramble drill, that extra, I got him on the comeback. Now he's going to turn it up field and make it a comeback and go. There's nothing I can do.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Now I'm guarding him for instead of three seconds when you got the D-Line coming after him. I know I got three. That comeback on morning. It's a pick if he throws it. Now get off me. He turned it up field. Now I look like I'm beat on a comeback and go.
Starting point is 00:11:06 I need you guys to get there. I got the comeback. He gets the comeback and go. I'm beat. That's five seconds covering A-B man-a-man-man single high. Everybody got a job to do. D-line. Y'all are doing one-on-ones.
Starting point is 00:11:17 The same way I'm doing one-on-ones. Definitely. You got three seconds to beat your old man that left tackle that guard. Y'all getting paid the big bucks too. So everybody, like, everything works together. Ultimate team, and I know you're speaking on AB, right? How competitive it was going against one-on-one against that man.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Because I had the, I had the chance. He got me on YouTube. That's what I'm saying. Got me looking crazy. And that's another route. That's in the end zone. He ran the, he went, gave me off the line, goes out. Oh, where's out?
Starting point is 00:11:42 Not coming up. Somebody hit the quarterback. You know what I'm saying? We're doing one-on-ones. I'm looking crazy out here. For sure. Hey, but I would say, I would say, D. D.Bs, no offense, bro. D.Bs are kind of unfair with that, bro.
Starting point is 00:11:54 Like, we ran routes. Y'all playing, it's one-on-one. Y'all play outside leverage on a one-on-one take, talking about, oh, the safety would have been there to hit you. Okay, no, no, no. It's an offensive drill. Y'all supposed to be able to beat us on that. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:12:08 It's, damn, you're supposed to be – we're receivers, Rouse on air, if you, you know what I'm saying. But for us, D.Bs, we're going to say what we got to say. But on the end of the day, if we cover some shit, then it's a bad pass, that's strap. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? But all that. But at the end of the day, for sure.
Starting point is 00:12:23 Why I receive a drill, y'all post this, y'all supposed to get off. No, that's what's up. Yeah, I, you know, I don't think people also understand that you left from Gordon, Josh Gordon. Yes. Every day. J.G. J.G. Every day.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Who's a monster? He was a monster. He was going 200 back to back. To garden A.B. And, like, back to back, like, as a D.B. Or just you, you know? Like, what was your mindset going into practice, right? Forget the game.
Starting point is 00:12:53 In practice, you had to go and, like, show up. You battling. Like it was a game. You're getting right. You're trying to get right. And I think the one thing about it is, too, like, I know you guys. You just want to be the best that you can be. And I don't think people understand.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Just even from growing up, all you could do is be the best as you can be. Study the tape. I don't lie. I'm watching the tape. I'm taking coaching. I like to be coach hard because I want to be the best. So going against them, it's like, if I can guard JG, man to man. And when I was first in the league, no, Joe, you can pay the big bucks.
Starting point is 00:13:22 You need to go over there, follow these dudes around. Mandatory. Mandatory. Study the tape on this receiver, the best receiver, because that's what you're going to be governed. So having that mentality, it just makes it like every day. Did I get better than it did I get worse? Did J.G. beat me on the one of the ones or did I get him? Were you also the guy that like, you know, because I've played on teams that have, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:43 where Xavier Howard, you know, who at the time was the top corner in the league. Denzel Ward, who we know from Cleveland, right? Like, I'm not taking reps with nobody but them, but those guys. Like, it has to be a big on big moment every time we having one-on-one. Did you approach that practice in those scenarios the same, right? Like, it ain't no me going against a fourth-string corner, like, so you can get better. Like, bro, because it's not that I don't want to do it to you. It's just that, like, my mental approach is a, maybe it might be a little different.
Starting point is 00:14:17 You know what I'm saying? With the jail, I know, like, my release got to be there. It got to be on point. My ain't no wasted emotion. That needs to be, you know what I'm saying? So it's like as a DB, which, again, I will say you guys play one of the harder positions in the NFL. Thank you, my brother. I will say.
Starting point is 00:14:31 Thank you. Thank you. I'm going backers trying to guard, you know. It's insane. But like, I guess to answer to actual question, actual question, it's like, was that your approach? And how do you think that that, you know, help younger guys under you understand what it's like to be a pro and have that mentality every day you show up to practice against one of the best. Not being afraid to compete.
Starting point is 00:14:54 You know what I'm saying? Like, no, not getting comfortable. Not like just resting on your morals. No, I'm Joe. This is what I do. I'm going to here every day I'm playing versus the best man. J.G. wanted to smoke too.
Starting point is 00:15:03 So it's like when he lines up, he comes out. No, Joe's out. We know what it is because that's going to show good on good, best on best. We get to watch these reps on film. The younger dudes get to see. Joe's not just going to go press somebody out for no reason. If he's going to press somebody, he's going to press JG. And now you see he locked up the best on the squad.
Starting point is 00:15:21 This is how you do it. You know what I'm saying? You're setting the standard. 1,000%. That is the standard, right? People are not used to that, right? They're not used to. In college, you know, we went to SEC, right?
Starting point is 00:15:31 So it was always the best versus the best. That's the only way. Right? And that's for you to get better at your position, you know, to say, I know, Joe, he might be a press guy. Man, try to beat him off the line. A thousand percent. If you can. Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 00:15:45 You're going to work. You're going to work your releases because he's going to try to put hands on it. Yeah, no, 100%. Obviously, the game has been changing a lot, right? You see it becoming more of a pass-heavy, offensive, you know, type of, with the rule changing type of league. You know, do you feel like that's like a benefit to the DB or the receiver? Like, obviously, it's a safety thing.
Starting point is 00:16:05 I feel like the safety part is them going across the middle is good for the receivers because, you know, the consequences, you know what I'm saying? We were playing DBs. You play defense back in the day. You're trying to knock somebody's head off. And they sound, you're trying to sleep. They're saying it for real. And that's what we would do back in the day
Starting point is 00:16:20 and it would sound crazy. But that's just how you would hit. But now I think I can help them out for a safety reason. They can go across the middle, not as many consequences. But I think for DBs, it's tough. You can't really touch people like that. That's where you got to get your mental right. You got to start studying tape.
Starting point is 00:16:34 You got to start reading splits. You got to start knowing down the distances and what's going to happen before it happens. The younger dudes that you are, you're worried about what's the call. You're trying to figure out where the hell you need to be. So you're like, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. on, the motion in? Hold on, who am I working with? The smoother that you are, the more that you know what's going on,
Starting point is 00:16:51 the more relaxed you can be. So just studying the tape and knowing what's happening before it comes. I think that's what's going to help out with DV's a lot. Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers, and guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, huge news? We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas, we invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to a... We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts around there.
Starting point is 00:17:15 But this one, this one, we're going to do podcasts. But this one, we're one's extra special. So how did we actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes.
Starting point is 00:17:36 I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, where people could call in and say, hey Jonas. And then I wrote down on my little notebook, Hey Jonas. And I'll heard it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and Friends. Starting point is 00:22:27 So my question is, right? Don't go back and look at that. That was like your prime almost. So I'm gonna say this. What was so different from each and every guy you just named? I would say O'Dell and O'Dell's just quick and fast and could catch everything. His burst was unbelievable. A.B.
Starting point is 00:22:46 His toe tap on the sideline. If the ball is in the area, he's going to catch it. And then him and Ben, that thing helped him out too. Like I said, I gover to come back. The scramble. You're scrambling that drink. So I'm beat. And then Julio just saying like Calvin, just big-ass dudes.
Starting point is 00:23:02 I'm normally better with bigger receivers because I'm quicker than them. I can get my hands on them. I can stay in front of you. Smaller dudes are normally tough, but Julio and Megatron was, they was big and strong and quick and fast. Like, grab my shoulders. And when they had me, I'm like, oh, no,
Starting point is 00:23:18 it just threw me out the way for the slant. Yeah, yeah. When he grabbed me, I'm like, oh, no, get all that. Oh, no. I was like, okay, yeah, he's stronger than me. So we named the past guys. Who would you be, I'm not going to say afraid, but who would be your top guys now?
Starting point is 00:23:33 You know, you got Jamar, you got Jets. Can you give me your top five now? Who would Joe Heed in Love to compete against? Yeah, in my heyday, I want to smoke with everybody. So the best dudes, I'm going with Jamar Chase. Yes. You know what I'm saying? Who else we got?
Starting point is 00:23:48 Who else we got? Did you see Tariq at all? I did. I did. I saw him with Kansas City a couple of times. Was he, he still was kind of, they hadn't, they still was in the, who was the quarterback then? It was in my homes. It was Ali Smith, right?
Starting point is 00:24:02 It was Ali Smith. Yeah, I think so. Yeah, it was. before my home son took over. He didn't do too much. He didn't do too much. He was super fast though. But right now, yeah, Jamar Chase is my favorite one,
Starting point is 00:24:12 Justin Jefferson. Yeah. Puka looking crazy, but I'm like, I don't see the speed part. So I wanna see what, I don't know. I don't know what it was. Is it Jean McVey? Is it Cooper Cup? Because I'm like, Cooper Cup is cool,
Starting point is 00:24:24 but I'm like, I don't know. Is he him? You know what I'm saying? Jackson Smith and Jigba looks ridiculous right now. But I like to see just a smaller receiver, his routes. I seen them with them, a couple sling goes looking crazy. Yeah, I think the biggest thing that I noticed, like, with guys like that, and we had, we talked to Zayflowers as well, right?
Starting point is 00:24:44 With guys like, well, guys like, Jay Sien, I feel like how Seattle chooses to use them makes it a match-up problem, right? Like, imagine you following a guy that's lined up in the back field, right? Sure. Now, you're like, wait, do I line up on the left side? Do I line up in the middle? You know what I mean? Like, it's hard to match up with a guy like that, right?
Starting point is 00:25:02 So it's hard to, you know, come up with. a good defensive strategy are for you to actually have that battle go on, like how back in the day where, you know, it was, you got your ex-receiver, you know where you're at, you got your Z receiver, you know what I mean? Have you ever had to guard anybody in that J-S-N type of role that we see today? Obviously, the game is involved, right? But, like, have you ever had to guard anybody where essentially, like, you following them all over the field? You know what I mean? No, normally I was with the exes and they would just put them boys outside. Right. You know what I'm saying? So I was going to go left outside or right outside.
Starting point is 00:25:34 We're looking at the bottom of the, looking at the huddle in the bottom of their feet, they're going this way or that way, and we're going to the outside. So, yeah, the slot's a different game. Yeah, it's a different game. Yeah, it's a different game. Yeah. Too much space. Whoa. What?
Starting point is 00:25:45 It's too much space. I'm good on that. Yeah. Get all the little takes slots. You know, we're going to, I'm going to get a little messy right now, right? Oh, Lord. Yeah, I got to. Go ahead, brother.
Starting point is 00:25:52 I'm here for it. I was doing my research. They brought up Jarvis and Odell name. And you did like, you yawn? No, no, no. No, no. No. That wasn't for real.
Starting point is 00:26:05 That was Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin, yon. Yeah, he's young. But you are the representation of your coach. Oh, see, that's what I'm saying. I knew it wasn't me to represent. I knew it wasn't me to record. I was never.
Starting point is 00:26:17 Never to my good man. Yeah, no. So we was playing, we was about to play you guys. I want to say this was right after COVID year or during COVID year maybe. And we played in Cleveland. Okay. And press conference the week before. asked Mike Tomlin like, you know, how do you guys plan to stop Jarvis Landry and
Starting point is 00:26:39 Odell Beckham? I think it was like maybe our first year together or second year together. And he yawned on it. Like he was just like, ah, and like yorn on camera. So then we played, I think, on Sunday night football. We ended up beating y'all 27, 21 to 7 or something like that. See all that pressure come back on you. See what I'm saying? Yeah. Do you don't remember? And guess what? I don't know. I'm not sure who it was. But one of them did the, the yawn Telly when they school the touchdown. One of us did? No, me.
Starting point is 00:27:08 It was me. See what year was this? See, what year was this? I got to go back. I got to go back and know because I know. This is like 2019, probably. 2019, 2020. Right, right after COVID year or right before COVID year?
Starting point is 00:27:21 I would never disrespect y'all like that. That's all I want to say on that. I would never disrespect y'all like that. I think Coach T might have been tired. Maybe. Yeah. I hope he didn't mean disrespect, bro. No disrespect, bro.
Starting point is 00:27:33 In the film room, you always got love on the tape and Odell. So hopefully he would just talk. He might have been quarterback. Yeah. He might have been talking about maybe. Oh. You know what I'm saying? Maybe that's like, they got to get somebody to get it to him.
Starting point is 00:27:47 Yeah, yeah. Yeah. So you don't want to disrespect them? Never. But listen, when y'all played against the 2017 Jacksonville Jaguels, the playoffs come. Y'all wasn't even worried about us. That's what I'm saying. You already beat us in the regular season too.
Starting point is 00:28:05 So I'm trying to figure out I was, I was pooped. I was locked in. And we lost Shazir. Yeah. You already toad the joke for 180 yards. Yes. I'm like just, listen, you're going to come in this jump in locked in. Facts.
Starting point is 00:28:17 So we didn't. You did what you had to do. Three touchdowns. It's spanked us out of the way. So because the first game, right, we played y'all in the regular season, 30. We beat you out 30 to 9, right? Yes. I'm bringing up everything.
Starting point is 00:28:30 You're stressing my dog out. 30 to 9, right? So, that was probably my third or fourth professional game. Week 5. And we was talking about how the EFC naught is known for being physical. That was a physical-ass game because I think I had 28 carries, probably 30 carries that game. Can you tell me what was your mindset? Well, my mindset wasn't like, damn, I'm playing against the fucking Pittsburgh Steelers.
Starting point is 00:28:58 I've been watching my entire life. And it's like now I'm trying to adjust. just my game to not just running the ball. I got to worry about Mike Sam, nickel wheel coming. Like it's so much that's going through my mind that I couldn't really play how I wanted to until like the second half.
Starting point is 00:29:13 I wasn't comfortable. So I just know for me, we the Jacksonville Jaguar. Y'all like, we want to play these, I was too. You want to play these fucking bombs. Like, come on now. That's what we was expecting and hoping. But you run the ball crazy. We were thinking Blake borders.
Starting point is 00:29:31 We got to make him beat us. Right. End of the day. Stack the box. Let Lenny, like, just stop him and then, you know what I'm saying? We can hopefully win the game. But y'all's defense was unbelievable too. Jalen, Boyer, Allum Boys, Mac Campbell.
Starting point is 00:29:45 So y'all was getting pick sixes crazy. So, like, it just, we could never get ahead of the, we could never get ahead of the. You was toting the ball crazy. Calling people out, like, just running that joint. So let me tell you about that. You was running the joint. I got respect. Run the ball.
Starting point is 00:30:00 Mike, Mike Mitchell. I got respect. I like Mike Mitch. I got respect for, like. Mike Mitch is trying to get the tall. He's trying to let him. He's trying to thomp something. Joe, no, the homie was out there tripping.
Starting point is 00:30:09 So I'm like, I'm saying, look, I'm like, brother. Like, I don't know what you got. I'm not trying to go that with you. But I'm like, I ain't one of them. I ain't no bitch. Like, yeah, that's how he said. I kept telling him. I'm like, all right, fuck it.
Starting point is 00:30:20 We got out one-on-one. I'm like, come on, brother. Let me see what you work on. He went low. So in my eyes? He's like this. Yeah. He's like, come on.
Starting point is 00:30:28 What you're thinking at the same time of you, You were running behind and chasing. I slowed up a little bit. Yeah, this is about to go down. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. But he got him down, he went on, you know what I'm saying? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:39 Good contact. Yeah, I was, yeah, he wanted smoke. In the reckless season, right? You know, you got to show effort, right? Yes. I scored the winning touchdown and nine of y'all touchdown. So I'm like, I was over with. Davis 28 was, I'm like, I smoked him, dust him.
Starting point is 00:30:56 Yeah. You see, you see Joe. You know, Joe's showing the effort. I'm like, damn, he still. Touch me, after I scored, I'm like, all right, so maybe he need, you know, brownie points. Yeah, yeah, got a show. He ain't quit, but like, I feel like y'all mindset should have changed after that
Starting point is 00:31:08 going until playing us in the playoffs, which it didn't because y'all said, we not, the exact words, they're not, we're not, we're not worrying about, they're about, the Patriots. So I'm like, I'm like, what the fuck I'm like. That was actually, yeah, that was actually. That bulletin ball and ball material right there. We needed no reason to do that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:23 When we lost Shazir, we didn't have linebacker in there, you know. Lost a leader. Lost the leader in there. That was the best team I ever. played on though bro 2017 skill-wise a B Levion
Starting point is 00:31:34 Leavion Bell Martin you know what I'm saying bro our offense was unbelievable a young juju young Juj
Starting point is 00:31:41 young T.J. Watt you know what I'm saying like the offense was crazy and then the defense started getting we just fumbled the bag my bad bro fumble the bag you did that to us
Starting point is 00:31:52 I encourage 45 42 but yeah the bye week and everything I was out there got the 11s Feel good. Said from Jordan like, oh yeah, your playoff jumps.
Starting point is 00:32:02 I'm like, oh, yeah, let's get it. That's their turn out. That's a little sweet. Ew. So, now, this is another question, right? Do you feel like that bi? Messed y'all up? I feel like we should have not been overlooking y'all, bro.
Starting point is 00:32:18 Like, we really was like, no, bro, this is Jacksonville. Blake Borders, we don't go out there, stop, Leonard. Go out there, school some tennies. We got AB. Come on, man. What are we doing? It's a bail. Y'all had an injured, I injured AB.
Starting point is 00:32:29 He was in all the way, but he was still- Spazzing. See that, Tulian, Boye was right there all the time. Yeah, he didn't care. That was also a good matchup, watching that on, watching that on TV every time AB and Boyet played. That was another good one. And he's in his pocket.
Starting point is 00:32:45 Like, Boyer, everybody, like, he was getting better. I'm like, that's great coverage. Man, it's standing right there. That's what you was talking about just now. That ball placement. That ball placement. With somebody that got a great catch radius, don't matter who covering them.
Starting point is 00:32:56 You know what I mean? If they're not getting hands on the ball And the receiver could get their hands on the ball. You're going to get. Yeah. He's going to get them. That sink him and Ben had together. Yes.
Starting point is 00:33:07 See, I never understood that shit. Because, like, even before, like, halftime, when he threw that kind of hell married to Bryant. Yes. I'm like, bro, shit fake. Like, it's scripted. They got to script out. They got the script.
Starting point is 00:33:20 He's going 14 seconds. Yes. They had the 40-yard line. Bombed it. Martavis crossed the field. I understand. No, he was different. He was fast too
Starting point is 00:33:29 Him and they had Mike Wallace before that And that dude was running I play with Mike in Miami See? Yeah, that's my OG Ole Miss Bomb me up Yeah
Starting point is 00:33:38 Yeah, that's my OG Mike out the city, dude I went out of the city, dude I'm playing That was for two He should have watched LSU I went for too low Yeah, low for two
Starting point is 00:33:46 Man, man We talked about receivers Like who's some of the DBEs now in the game that like You like how they play You know, you watch them every Sunday You know what I mean
Starting point is 00:33:57 Like you got your eyes on anybody. I don't think they call Denzel War is not young, but I love his game, bro. His technician. Yes, bro, you speak the facts that I love. When you go watch the tape, your coaches like every snap. It's 70 plays. Denzel Ward, they might throw them five.
Starting point is 00:34:12 But when you go just watch the tape, people are strapped. The whole game. He's just there. Locked in, boom, feet off the line. There's no false steps. There's no weirdness. He's in phase. Like, technique is unbelievable. Patrick Sartan. He's big, tall, fast. And he's like,
Starting point is 00:34:28 Doing it at 6-2 is ridiculous. Stingley is I love Stingley coming out from LSU. I thought he was, I thought he could have went in the draft as a freshman. Then he could have got drafted as a sophomore. I'm like, he the best corner in his freshman year in college. He could have a draft. I'm happy his career, like he started a little slow. A little slow.
Starting point is 00:34:47 He started a little slow, but I'm happy where he's at now. He's at now and he don't get enough praise. I don't think he's not as, I don't say, both four are out there. You know what I'm saying? But I think he's one of those guys that could definitely pop his shit if he wanted to. Yeah, because that man got ball skills. He's quiet. He don't talk a lot.
Starting point is 00:35:05 Yeah. He don't talk a lot. Love his time. Bring your hard hat to work. J.C. Horn from the Panthers. Tall, tall, long. He's starting to like, I'm starting to see him because he had all the athletic ability, but he's starting to intercept bang eights.
Starting point is 00:35:19 When you undercutting the bang eight, I'm like, you're watching tape. You know what I'm saying, you know something. He understands it now. He understands it now. Yeah. not only just bringing the athleticism. So I want my man Joey Porter Jr. I think he's going to start like out in Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:35:32 Out in Pittsburgh. Just use the athletic ability and things going into year three, four. He's going to be able to start watching that tape and not, you know what I'm saying? Just undercutting stuff, making plays. When did you feel like that happened for you? Like that, that, that jump from, okay, you mentioned earlier, not just athletic ability, right? But understanding like how I could be more fundamentally sound, right? Like taking that leap from just using that natural ability.
Starting point is 00:35:56 to like being a pro like yeah taking the next step I would say bro it took for real probably after like the after third year but going into my fourth season you was ready I was ready for everything I knew everything I wanted anybody man-to-man like it just felt comfortable because I was watching that that's that that's that pain you're coming in that joint you know nobody getting in knowing what's up but just the whole all of them other games just natural ability taking in coaching knowing these cover tools is the same cover tools so when they call this, don't worry about that. Worry about what they're about to do.
Starting point is 00:36:28 You know what I'm saying? So really starting to study my opponent way more than just what we had going on. So I think year four when you just start slowing down. It sounds crazy when everybody says it starts to slow down. It really do. Because you're out there as a rookie and they call a play. You don't know. You got to know.
Starting point is 00:36:44 You don't know all the nuances. You're like just, okay, all right, bad, bad, then people get the motioning. You're like, what's the check? Yeah. Oh, I'm throw it off. Yeah, I'm told off. I'm so happy you said it's starting to slow. down because for me personally when I played in the SEC it was the same thing as the NFL when
Starting point is 00:37:00 my first year in the NFL I'm like damn you know people thought about talked about the game of the speed the speed of the game but I'm like nah this shit is it's the same shit so I kind got criticized just I guess for saying that saying that right so being honest I want to when you first came in the league you played DB was probably different right was the the speed of the game the same to you or it was a little bit faster it was It wasn't really, like the speed of the game was similar. Yeah. No, I think it was a, shit just moved a little bit faster.
Starting point is 00:37:32 Everybody was moving with a purpose. Yeah. They just knew where they needed to be and why they needed to be there. I didn't. You know what I'm saying? So I think that was the part, especially now being on the defense and just having to learn all the calls, to check someone to know what's going on. So.
Starting point is 00:37:46 I mean, it makes sense because guess what? You still learning the playbook. Yeah. Shit's still fresh. You know, I can all them, like when I was out there, like my first year, I wasn't the third down guy. because it's too much shit going on for me, especially that still is defense. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:58 You might have an extra guy over here but a whole time, Nicholson coming way off this side, right? Yeah, yeah. So, bro, I'm talking about me personally, I thought blocking was harder than anything else. Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, for sure, for sure. And, like, the coaches, they don't understand that, like,
Starting point is 00:38:16 all of the plays, everything, like first down, second down, third down, running backs. You haven't as though the past the D-line rushing, like the offensive lineman, this game so yeah man you mentioned you mentioned also like you know you guys talking about learning playbooks right like during your time in cleveland i think you had like nine seven different coaches i had about i was in seven years i had five different head coaches six different uh like defense well how you learning and and we all we all know sitting here as pros right in order to play fast
Starting point is 00:38:46 right you got to know what you're doing right how hard is it all right can you talk about people who don't realize that you know you you still play that the high high level with five different coaches, how many DCs, right? Learning new playbooks every year, obviously cover two is whatever it is. Languages are different. They're going to say cover two a little different way. They just don't say playing cover two. Or a different check to cover two, right?
Starting point is 00:39:08 Like, can you talk about making that adjustment and still playing at an all-pro level, right? A pro-bo level? Like, what was that like for you? That was, it was tough a little bit, but it's like you're going in there each year. You didn't think about it. Didn't think about it. I'm numb to it.
Starting point is 00:39:24 I'm like, you just, you got to buy in. We got a new coach here. We're starting all over. Yeah. We're trying to figure it out. And then you got to buy in completely because I'm like, this is who we got. You know what I'm saying? Hopefully it works out.
Starting point is 00:39:34 You know what I'm saying? Like, let's get to us. So learning new playbooks and stuff, it wasn't the best thing. But like you feel like you new student. OTAs, you got to make it to OTAs. You got to make it to all of that stuff because that's when I'm learning the stuff, trying to get the playbook all the way down. So training camp, smooth.
Starting point is 00:39:49 So speaking of that, you also had, I want to say, 15 different quarterbacks doing that time. That's crazy. That people don't understand, right? You know what I mean? Yes. Right.
Starting point is 00:40:04 What quarterback did you feel like, you was like, oh, hell, no. Like, like. Be real, no. Like, it was like, is there, if there is a quarterback, you don't have to maybe say that you don't want to, but like if there ever was a,
Starting point is 00:40:19 if there was a quarterback or our situation, you was like, man. we down bad I never wanted to really like you always when you see them in practice or whatever you would always have hope
Starting point is 00:40:35 you know what I'm saying but my whole thing was I always didn't try to I'm on defense yeah I'm trying to do my job if they don't score they don't win just trying to be a team player when we're retired now looking back at it yeah that's just crazy you need to be scoring points
Starting point is 00:40:52 you're a professional quarterback yeah we got professional professional receivers, everybody here's getting paid. You know what I'm saying? But when you're in the situation, who am I to be worried about them? If they don't score a joke, make sure nobody gets open on you, trying to make sure defense. Best defense in the league.
Starting point is 00:41:06 It sucks when you lose. Like, dang, we lost seven to six. We just needed one more joke. So in the situation, you always want your, like, offense, please ball out. I've seen you do it before, like, in practice. He makes good throws. You know what I'm saying? Do the good stuff, you know what I'm saying, in the game.
Starting point is 00:41:21 So I always went there positive and never really thought, like, We're going to lose, but looking back at the joint, I'm like, just, we weren't fucking hands behind our back going into the game. 100%. But, like, it is what it is. I mean, I know now it's a thing, right? You know, it's a thing that, again, in hindsight, like you say, right? But, like, I think now is the thing that, like, your, the quarterback position, like, has to be
Starting point is 00:41:43 that, you know what I mean? And for defense is, you know, you think about, like, damn, like, we got to hold these these guys to, like, seven points to win, you know what I mean? It's very hard to do in the NFL, especially with some of the quarterbacks that wasn't on your team, right? No, for sure. And then I think, like, when you look at the game now and how it's more of an offensive-friendly league, whatever it is, you know, as a defense, talking about guys like Miles Garrett, how frustrating you think it is for someone like that to know, no matter. You get, he had like nine sacks in the game or six sacks or whatever it is in the game. I'm thinking about it, Joe, I ain't going to lie.
Starting point is 00:42:23 If I'm a DB, I'm playing on defense, and the quarterback, or the situation, we're not scoring enough points, but we're not scoring enough points. Regardless of how, as a defender, bro, I'm frustrated. I'm paying attention. I'm not even going to do no reps on the side. I'm looking at what kind of players y'all that stalling this week. I want to know I damn them going to play offense. You can't, I don't know, bro.
Starting point is 00:42:46 I feel like, I feel like, that's how you approached it, but, you know, I feel like me personally, I would have been like, yo, I feel you. I felt like that, though. You know what I'm saying? We definitely had the feelings, but I just tried to not let it out. You know what I'm saying? You're a team guy. I'm a team guy.
Starting point is 00:43:02 I'm not trying to mess the locker room. They're trying to find reasons not to pay us. I'm not going to go walk in there. Man, what you need to do is your quarterback. So you was excited to go to this is what you say? I ain't going to lie. When I ended up getting, they tried to give me to take a pay cut. I'm like, no, I'm not.
Starting point is 00:43:19 You're tripping. I'm, you stay exactly where I'm at. So you're bugging out. I'm been to Cleveland, no, for sure. Yeah. Then they said, no, whatever, let me go. I got offered by the Dolphins. Was, put, the Dolphins offered me more and the New Orleans Saints.
Starting point is 00:43:32 Yeah, we'd have been teammates, gang. Like, the only thing I was thinking, bro, I wanted to go play with Coast Tomlin. I wanted to go play with Big Ben. I wanted to go where they were scoring points. I know over there, them boys over there gonna be scoring. I don't got a guard, AB, I'm with you. You know what I'm with you? I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:43:46 What's up, guys? Pouncy, the homies, coach Tomlin, loved everything they had going on. So I'm like, let me just try to bring my talents over here. Defense, I could just do my, and that's when I met, though. When you go there, you do your 11th. Everybody on office, they're trying to score every drive. When they don't score, they're upset and there's reasons why they're looking at the tape. You hit a fuss in.
Starting point is 00:44:07 What's going on? I'm like this. I love that. Y'all are trying to get it in there. We scored 30 points. Y'all are pissed. We should go to score 42. I love it.
Starting point is 00:44:15 You know what I'm saying? Defense, we weren't performing. We gave up runs and people missing gaps in assignments. And you look at it and it's everybody's bad. It's your detackle right here. You got to make this. You got to make this. So it's the eye on the sky don't lie.
Starting point is 00:44:27 And it's like, you don't got to go do nobody else's job. You do your job. We're going to be good to go. Hey, it's us, the Jonas brothers. And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, huge news? We created our own podcast called, Hey, Jonas.
Starting point is 00:44:41 We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to it. We're the first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts. We're starting a trend. But this one's a trend. extra special. So how do we
Starting point is 00:44:52 actually come up with a name Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember. I think it was on a call about what we should call it. Well, we were thinking I'm originally calling it one of the early names of our band. Before Jonas Brothers was... This is how you guys remember it going down? Yes. I have a very different memory of this. We were talking about a thing, a bit for the podcast, people could call in and say, hey Jonas.
Starting point is 00:45:17 And then I wrote down on my little notepad, Hey Jonas. it up as a potential title for the podcast. But thanks for remembering that, guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL, late-night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends.
Starting point is 00:45:39 Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between-songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis, and I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs, and on the Renee Stubbs Tennis
Starting point is 00:46:13 podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on clay. Genschen went. I mean, she went down to three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any surface.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs Tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of I. I heart women's sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque.
Starting point is 00:47:00 Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Man, I see in a passion in your eyes when you brought up Coach Tomlin, right?
Starting point is 00:47:27 How you felt about when he stepped down, he stepped away from, you know, Pittsburgh. And also, do you believe the AFC Nardt's not going to be the most physical division anymore? I think that's not going to change. I think they always going to be hitting. I think they really don't like each other and it's just in whoever coach comes there. They're going to try to knock each other out and it just is what it is. Every time, and the AFC, no football, it's real, it's just, it's physical. It's real violent.
Starting point is 00:47:54 So I think it's going to stay. But with Coach T, I think he gracefully bowed out. I think that him being in Pittsburgh for so long and just the fan base and just, you want to be wanted. You know what I'm saying? Like, you want to be someone where you goes to the office and they're rooting for you, like, not tolerated. So I felt like he felt like, you know what? I can step off. I don't think it was the Rooney's though.
Starting point is 00:48:14 Like if the Roosie, he stepped off, but the Rooney's, they wouldn't have fired him. They would have let him, you know what I'm saying, play out of this contract, do it again. But a great, great coach. Yeah. Love him. Players coach. Gave me so much knowledge. Just so relatable.
Starting point is 00:48:28 You know what I'm saying? Great dude. So wish the best for Coach C. But I think he just was like, man, y'all ain't rock on me here. They kept booing him like fire in time. Yeah, that's crazy. You're not trying to be in like, he's like this. He's like this right now.
Starting point is 00:48:40 You know what I'm chilling. I did. Not one losing season. Not one. And that's what I was so confused about, right? And also you can tell me like the carousel between going from. the Browns to Pittsburgh coaching-wise. What was the big difference?
Starting point is 00:48:54 We just kept, we couldn't, we didn't have a coach that they would let stay there, you know what I'm saying, for too long. So our coaches did a maximum two years long. Each one side of there for seven years, had five different coaches, so only to stay, you know what I'm saying,
Starting point is 00:49:04 for over one year. So I think with Coach T, I think he just had him and the GM. It was a Kevin Colbert. Yeah. Their relationship with the owner, just being on the same page, who we're going to bring in, what players we like,
Starting point is 00:49:16 how we're feeling like, who we're going to draft, I think it was like that was just smooth. And you knew he wasn't going to where, Kevin weren't going to where. They had three coaches in the history of the stiller. So just the comfortability of him to be able to make those moves and be like. Do you feel like that was like desperation in Cleveland, like to win? And that's what led to the all of the movement, right, at the head coaching position?
Starting point is 00:49:40 I want to ask you this. I think when they let me go and then they started getting talent, y'all got nice. Like you, oh, Baker, y'all made it to the playoffs. Y'all beat us in the playoffs. So, like, it's like right there, you're building something. Like, end of the day, Baker gave me $25 million a year. Just keeping that, just being able to go smooth, go get somebody. Something, something.
Starting point is 00:50:02 But I'm like, I just, I don't know. I think that it was getting good. And when we say, like, the Browns, like, they beat the Steelers in the playoffs. They won the playoffs game before the Steelers will win a playoff game. So now it's, it went down again. But they started getting good. I'm trying to figure out what happened right there. Like, what do you think when you was there?
Starting point is 00:50:21 You know what I feel like, and maybe you could, maybe you'll see it now. But like what I felt like was like even when I was in Miami and I played against teams in the AFC North, like, you know, Pittsburgh, like Baltimore. Like even Cleveland, like seeing you in Cleveland. I think we saw each other like once or twice. But like, and you was hurt at the time, I believe. But at the same time, he was running for me. No. No.
Starting point is 00:50:44 I was running for the smoke. But at the same time, I remember going to Cleveland, and then I'm playing against the same guys. And I think the biggest thing and the thing that I was trying to do while I was there was also like keep our core guys intact. Yes. Like I feel like the Steelers do a great job of that. I feel like Baltimore did an amazing job of that. I feel like teams like the Patriots, they do a, you know, they switch around a little bit more. But as far as their core guys, they keep them together.
Starting point is 00:51:10 And I think that that's something that the organization and the team could have done a better job of. Like imagine like being able to, you know, all of us, having all of us ain't you. You know what I mean? Like that team, that city, which is a football loving city. You know what I mean? That community around that team is crazy. Like they're just waiting for us to win. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:27 You know, so I think that like for me, even looking at Cleveland now, it's like, it's kind of like how Miami is. Like you're letting all your good players go. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, and I feel like they don't, they didn't see where you went through. I mean, obviously they saw you went through 15. quarterbacks throughout that time, right? Which has nothing to do with Joe Hayden's performance.
Starting point is 00:51:48 Joe Hayden's still showing up being a pro bowler. You know what I'm saying? Like, I'm playing against Marlon Humphrey. And when I was in Miami, I'm playing against same Marlon Humphrey when I get to Cleveland. Yeah. I'm playing against the same, my guy in the slot, number two, he's a great, great slot corner for Pittsburgh. Mike Hilton?
Starting point is 00:52:08 Mike Hilton. Yes. Playing against Mike Hilton. Every time I see the Steelers, I know, like, this was, you know. matchup you know what I'm saying like and I think that those organizations do a great job of keeping their core players together and that helps you build for the future obviously you know things happen but and guys want to move on yeah right but a guy like yourself who wasn't trying to move on right we got to figure how to make this work out yeah my problem with that though they put guys in position
Starting point is 00:52:34 to make those choices that that don't understand football right that for me that never played the game Right? So everything they're going off about is analytics. You know what I'm saying? And I don't, I don't respect that, right? And I think for you to be involved in a situation like that, you should have some skin in the game at least. And I'm not saying everybody's bad at it. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:52:59 But they have a few that haven't played the game that make, to me, make terrible decisions. No, for sure. And I can see what you're saying about both of you, about the locker room, knowing what kind of guys like, this is a dude that we need to keep on this team because he's done everything we asked of him. The dudes look up to him. The team sees that you're going to see that you get paid,
Starting point is 00:53:21 you get rewarded for doing what you need to do and being a good guy. So I was saying the same thing with like T.J. Ward was there, Tashon Gibson, Buster Screen. It was me. Oh, they got rid of all my boys for like a couple M's. I'm like, no, this is, we got a corner, we got two corners and two safeties.
Starting point is 00:53:36 Y'all not going to pay them. I'm not. T.J. went to Denver. ended up balling. Buster went to the Jets. Buster went to the Jets and Gip went to Jacksonville, yeah. Balling, bro. So it's like, I feel you keeping that same core, knowing like, pay the people that you drafted
Starting point is 00:53:49 all of us too. Like in-house dudes, homegrown, boom, that's going to keep the dudes that's drafted. Your players, everybody's seeing some good thing going on. Yeah, and I think personally that's led to the success of the Steelers. That's led to the longevity of the long-term success of the Baltimore Ravens, right? and why teams that aren't actually, I don't say, on those levels, right, are not there yet. Obviously, we have the Kansas City team now that people are trying to follow that staple of just, you know, plug and play year in and year out type of players, right? But we know that's surrounding around a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:54:27 You know what I'm saying? You got Pat and Andy. You're going to be solid. It's different. You know what I mean? No disrespect to Edam and Amadola. Guys are great. So sure.
Starting point is 00:54:36 One of those guys got more numbers than me. than I do, right? But at the same time, if you compare it like physical ability or whatever, a skill, whatever it is, you wouldn't select that person. You know what I'm saying? So it's like, it's like that.
Starting point is 00:54:52 And so I think that's the biggest thing that I see with Cleveland and honestly with some teams around the league where it's just like, bro, if you keep your guys together, your leaders, your heartbeats of the team, like I'm still thinking about like guys on the Steelers team.
Starting point is 00:55:07 Like y'all had a guy that didn't even that ballet played, but he was annoying as hell, number 98, bro. Oh, yeah, Vince Williams. Man, that's my good man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He played. He played a lot. But, like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:18 But he was there forever, bro. Like, he was there forever. Coming down here. Don't care. Don't care. 100%. This Williams, shout out of Vince Wells, for sure. I love that dude.
Starting point is 00:55:28 Savage. You need them on your team. Bro, and I remember guys like that, right? He played special teams as well. It's like, well, if I look at the Cleveland team right now, or even the Miami team, I don't know no one. That's why special teams looking crazy.
Starting point is 00:55:40 You got to have dudes that are nice that play special teams. Fets that understand. Then no, what's up? Yeah. It's the only way to make the team in some cases. And most guys, I play a special team when I came in. Second round, draft it. For more.
Starting point is 00:55:53 First round, I play all the special teams. No way. Yeah, I promise you. They had me on. Maybe you talk to you know what it was, man. Eric Mangini. Yeah. He was from the Bill Belichick.
Starting point is 00:56:01 Yeah. That man wasn't playing with me. He did not rock with me. No? I mean, I didn't feel like it. Once you, R5, busting the wedge up? No, no, no. Yeah, I was a safety.
Starting point is 00:56:10 Safety gunner, gunner hold up. Yeah, all that. So we got a segment here. We sponsored about Hard Rock Bet. We got a segment called Lenny's Locks. And in this segment, we're going with the AFC title. Who's winning the AFC title this year? Or let's say this.
Starting point is 00:56:31 Who's coming out to AFC North this year? Yeah. So it's, damn. Now, listen, it's a. Coach Mike not there? I know. Hardball, Harbaugh.
Starting point is 00:56:41 A lot of changes. McCarthy. Yeah. You got three head coaching changes. Three head coaching changes in the FCN. Talk to me. First, hold on, can I see what y'all at first?
Starting point is 00:56:49 Can I see y'all's temperature? What's y'all thinking? Me personally? Your personally. I need to know with Liddy thinking. What's your personal? Zick, Zick kind of got pissed off at me.
Starting point is 00:56:56 I say Cleveland. Okay. Yes. Are you walking with Shadoo? Yes. Okay. I love Shadoo. She's going to start.
Starting point is 00:57:06 Yes. Okay. All right. All right. I'm going Baltimore. Okay, you're going to Ravens? I'm going to go to my son. Solid choice.
Starting point is 00:57:13 Yeah. I'm going to Cleveland. Okay. I'm going to Cleveland and second us. Why do? Why Cleveland though? Because you said it? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:22 Because you said it. But no. But for real, for real, honestly, if I was going to go with, I think Cleveland, if we, after the draft, we need to get, we still need receivers. We still need to get another tackle, but I'm not mad at your door. And our defense is fire. Yeah. We need to make sure now we can score some points. We need to get our running back.
Starting point is 00:57:45 Crazy nice. The rookie, the rookie tight in. Unbelievable. Got to get him healthy. And then we get some receivers out there. We can score some points. Our defense is always going to be legit. But now it's just them in Pittsburgh, too.
Starting point is 00:57:57 Because I like Pittsburgh. We don't have a quarterback right now. But we always, we're going to figure something now. 100%. But I like, I like, Will Howard. My time is. Do you all know Will Howard? No.
Starting point is 00:58:07 You don't believe in them. Ohio State. We drafted him last. shit got to give him a chance he was throwing it to Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State getting him a 10th to call yes yes okay yes yeah I mean yeah yeah done in Jeremy Smith we got to go see what's going on because you know you guys still got D-K Matt Calf we got Michael Pittman Jr. and we got Michael Pittman Jr. and we got uh my man Mount Washington yeah the six six 300 pound tight end yep yeah but can't he move though
Starting point is 00:58:33 but he can't move bro he jumped he hurtle somebody hurling people crazy crazy watch his little highlights I know I seen the blocks of my Yeah, he's nasty because he's 300. Yeah, 10 pounds. Yeah, he's a guard. Six, playing tight in. Yeah, he's a guard playing tight in. Who else?
Starting point is 00:58:48 We got brittle. We got Rico, Rico Dado, the running back. The running back. Yes, from the Panthers. Oh, he would shot off? Yes. We're agent. We don't get some dudes too.
Starting point is 00:58:57 Okay, okay. Yeah. But now the, the main question is, can you guys put it together? That's the main question. It's with the new coach. I think that's, that's going to be, you know, which is a proven coach. Yeah, right?
Starting point is 00:59:10 Offensive. I like the transition from Tomlin, like to, it wasn't a reach. It was somebody that's like proven, vetted. Like Tomlin. Yeah. Similar. Yeah, I got good history. He's from Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:59:22 He loves it. Yep. He was crying during his interview. I saw that. You know? That's what I want to see. It means something to him. It means something to him.
Starting point is 00:59:30 Just picking back over the years, right? Who were some of your favorite teammates you had? Either it could be in Cleveland, you know, or it could be in Pittsburgh. I would go. Cleveland, some of my favorite teammates. We go Phil Taylor. He's from Maryland. We from the same area.
Starting point is 00:59:45 We played against each other in high school. We ended up being teammates. T.J. Ward, my dog, man. We played together. I drafted to the Browns. Super duper cool. Love that dude. Eric Ebron.
Starting point is 00:59:57 Yes, sir. Is that, man? So funny. We trained together. We're coming out. Plow. He's an animal, too. Animal.
Starting point is 01:00:06 Y'all be golfing together? We be golfing all the time. That's all. that's the way we got the Pittsburgh together we started golfing every day yeah so yeah me and Ebron um who else we got i still rock with johnny too man me and johnny keep in touch right now that's awesome yeah yeah yeah he got the pie going and everything yeah yeah yeah yeah well hold on because we not like like like he's somebody bro he is when when he first when you first heard the news he was coming to the browns how did you feel about that i was excited
Starting point is 01:00:35 yeah i was excited bro we we we we want a quarterback i I want us to score some points. I'm on defense. Like, anything, okay. Hopefully it's going to shake. Love Johnny Debt, but you know that quarterback position. Different. Different.
Starting point is 01:00:49 Like, I don't care. Like, you got to study that tape. You got to know everybody's job. You know what I'm saying? You can't be just be a wide receiver. All right, yeah, okay, I know this. You know what I'm running this play and run this slant. You got check, check, check.
Starting point is 01:01:02 Lyman looking back at you, you got to find them looking like they need to know something. Yeah. You got to know that. Did they put enough people around him to help him? I think Johnny needs to really help himself a little bit too. You know what I'm saying? You can't want it more. People can't want it for you more than you want it for yourself.
Starting point is 01:01:16 Okay. So I think he'd be able to say that too. Like he wasn't as locked in. No matter how many, he was trying to get him right, but Johnny's just like, growing ass man. Yeah, it's a maturity thing. No, for sure. I mean, I could also speak to something like that,
Starting point is 01:01:29 being there with J.G. And like, there's like three people that's like assigned to J.G. Like to go wake him up, to get him to the facility, to watch. everything, I watch everything he's doing, you know what I mean? Like, which obviously we know he's a generational talent. Generational talent, man. Like, watching this guy just pull up to the, to the practice field, big,
Starting point is 01:01:55 bro, just fast, stop, the catch. It was like, it was unreal to see, you know what I mean? And also see, like, the support like that you mentioned around him. I think that that's something that, you know, a lot of guys need based on, like, Like where a lot of this stuff has been gone for some guys right here. You know what I'm saying? But, you know, shout out to Cleveland for that. They did put the pieces of room to try to make sure it happened and worked out.
Starting point is 01:02:19 You know what I'm saying? We mentioned that you guys got Cleveland winning the AFC NARP, but like there's a, there's a rumor that M.G might not be there. Yeah, man. So, I mean, I love that for him because he's done everything in his career, but when? Yeah. As a player, we all want to win. That's the shit that matters.
Starting point is 01:02:42 That's what keep our blood flowing. You want to win. He's a Hall of Fame regardless of whatever goes on. But I would love to see him on a winning team, thousand percent. You know? What's your tics and a, like he said, he's a Hall of Famer regardless. Miles, if he could go somewhere else, he's not the reason why we're losing. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:03:01 I think he would want to build something in Cleveland. Like winning in Cleveland is unbelievable. You get so much love, like to change the city up and be able to be able to be. able to go do it yeah it would be unbelievable so I think he he likes that but end of the day yeah if they can get it depends on what the Browns gonna be able to get for him who's going how much they're offering you know what I'm saying like a couple first rounds the Brown's looking at like 23 sacks we still only have five wins so yeah you know I'm saying I wouldn't be I wouldn't be mad at the
Starting point is 01:03:27 Browns to do it I would feel good for Miles to stay or if he went you deserve to go get it right because it's not your bad why you're not winning but Joe when should when should a player make that decision but You know what I'm saying? Because he thought about it. He tried to stand on business and then they dropped the 160 on them. Then it's like, okay, I'm going to go ahead and do what I got to do. Yeah, we're going to thug it up.
Starting point is 01:03:47 Let me thug it out for a little bit. But how long can he do that? This is what I'm telling you. What do you think? I'm saying, the only way is if he says like, like he says that he wants out, but if they're paying you that 40, you're professional. If the lead don't last that long, you don't want to be a problem trying to get, they're trying to find reasons not to pay you.
Starting point is 01:04:06 You're all miles scared. So you're walking around. You're a hired gun. You walk around $40 million, any team. Like, who, who hire me? Because you're going to go play. You're going to go ball because that's what we do. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:04:15 For all this. So with Miles, I'm like, if you don't have control of your rights, if you're like, I'm trying to get out of here. You told them they're like this. You're not going to where. So like, if they trade me, okay, but like, I don't know. Like, I feel the control. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:04:28 You don't got control. But personally, you know, if we're going to talk about character, he's one of the best human beings in the world. Yeah. Right? And I believe if they do, you know, do right by him, which I think for a guy like that that stayed. What is doing right behind me, no? Let him go.
Starting point is 01:04:48 Trading him, giving him the outing to flourish in his career. I mean, that's something I would do for a guy like that knowing that, I'm going to be real. We didn't deserve and he still decided to stay. Do right by him, man. Hey, that's the realest shit you ever said. See, he. That's the realest shit you ever. That's the realest shit you ever.
Starting point is 01:05:05 That's the realest shit you ever said. To date. To date. To date. Okay. It's the realest shit you ever said. I feel you. But you just got it.
Starting point is 01:05:14 I'm just thinking about the owners and stuff, bro. That's true. You think they're going to do that? Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. They don't be Canadian. They got us by the.
Starting point is 01:05:23 But I think, I think at this point too, right, in a player's career and I asked you that and you took the words out my mouth, right? At the same time, like, right now it's a win-win for both sides. You know what I mean? Like right now it's the, it's the, it's the, best time to do that, right? It's a win-win for Cleveland because he's still in his prime. Somebody would die to have.
Starting point is 01:05:43 There's a Miami Dolphin team. Well, they ain't got no budget. But there's a Kansas City team that's looking for a D&. You know, there's some teams out there that is willing to, you know what, that's our missing chess piece on this board. For a good zine. Cleveland get their first round picks, probably three or four of them. See, that's what I'm saying.
Starting point is 01:06:01 That's all the way we're talking about, guys. If we get three first round picks, Miles Garris is out of the Zos. We do it yesterday. Right. Love Miles Garrett. Yeah. But also you got to think about from the business side, the fans, the jersey sales. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:14 See, now you got to think about like, and I see what you say, they kind of have us behind, you know what I'm saying? Yes. It makes sense because they're going to be like, well, damn, we get rid of miles. We market in. Yes, yeah. Pumped. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:06:27 I mean, it is. It is what it is. It's a part of the game. You know what I mean? Like, we built in a new stadium. Yes. Out here in Cleveland, right? that stadium deserves a winning team
Starting point is 01:06:38 not saying that Miles Garrett should not be on that team like we're saying but like I think if they look at it I will be building for the future right Miles Garrett let's just say
Starting point is 01:06:49 what did my garage Joe Thomas him and just you know what I'm done and now you ain't getting nothing out of this you know what I'm saying like I'm tired of losing I'm tired of y'all not going to let me go I don't want to you know make my reputation seem like it's weird
Starting point is 01:07:04 you know what I mean? Or I don't like the game because they'll try to flip the narrative in the media. So I understand that, right? I just think that what you said personally, it's a win-win right now. It's the perfect time to either see what you, see how much you can get, be willing to put it on the table. Have a, you know, I'll be having dinner with Miles Garrett every day if I'm Jim and Dee has him. Just to, you know, like we want to do it right by you, Miles. Obviously we want to win games.
Starting point is 01:07:31 Like we've been trying to at this since before Joe hated, you know. I mean, like, and I think that there's a conversation that as, as an ownership and a player like that should be able to have and mutually agree on a decision. And Miles may be like, you know, man, I want to stay here regardless. I'm thugging it out. You know what I mean? But I feel like if you look at Joe Thomas, his last season was one in 15. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:58 Hard, bro. And then you know who didn't know what happened? Joe Hayden got out of there. I bet Joe Thomas was like, hmm, man. It ain't good when the one game. You know what I'm saying? So I think it's a win-win, man, for both sides, bro.
Starting point is 01:08:17 I feel it. I feel it. Just whatever, I'm with you. I want to see what they're going to get for him. Because I think if they get a haul for him for him, for show, it makes sense. I think he should hold out. Think he should hold out? For sure.
Starting point is 01:08:31 He's under his contract right now, right? But you don't give, don't give, just, sure. I ain't, I don't know what, I ain't count in his pockets, right? But you over 100 M's? Like, you know what I mean? Like, I think, I think it's a, you know. You just want to hold out, hold out to, I want to see him win. I want to see him win.
Starting point is 01:08:48 Yeah, no, for sure, for sure. Same hell. I want to see him win. I think he deserved to win, you know, you know, and he's been there since the start of his career. He's going to be going to, like, year 10. Year 10. Year 10 now. So it's, it's, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:09:02 He got drafted at 20. Yeah, he was number one pick. I was four. Okay. So we were the same class. You and TJ Watts, same class too. Okay, yep, okay. Hey, it's us, the Jonas Brothers.
Starting point is 01:09:12 And guess what? We have some big news. What's the news, huge news? We created our own podcast called, Hey Jonas. We invented a podcast? Well, we didn't invent it. We just contributed to our first people to do podcasts. Pretty, yeah, pretty wide range of podcasts.
Starting point is 01:09:26 We're starting a trend. But this one's extra special. So how do we actually come up with the name, Hey Jonas, guys? I honestly don't remember I think it was on a call about what we should call it And we were thinking I'm originally calling it One of the early names of our band Before Jonas Brothers
Starting point is 01:09:45 This is how you guys remember it going down Yes I have a very different memory of this We were talking about a thing A bit for the podcast For people could call in and say hey Jonas And then I wrote down on my little notepad Hey Jonas and offered it up as a potential title For the podcast
Starting point is 01:10:00 But thanks for remembering that Guys. Listen to Hey Jonas on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Just listen. We don't care where you hear it. Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smygel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel. Help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes.
Starting point is 01:10:32 Those people are starving for banter. Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The French Open is one of the toughest tests in tennis. And I know firsthand because I competed there myself. I'm Renee Stubbs. And on the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast, I'm breaking down everything happening at Roland Garris. Every match, every upset, and what it really takes to win on clay. Genschen win.
Starting point is 01:10:59 I mean, she went down at three to Rabakina, but I'm delighted. She's an outsider to win the French for me. And she likes Clay. Listen, Lena Rubakina is arguably the best player in the world right now. And I actually can win on any surface. Because if she's serving, well, good luck. Consider this your court side seat to the French Open. Listen to the Renee Stubbs tennis podcast on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 01:11:25 Presented by Capital One, founding partner of IHeart Women's Sports. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds.
Starting point is 01:11:50 I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Yeah, so I don't know, bro. I know, I know we were talking about, as we were talking about Cleveland, I mentioned something about the Stefansky thing and calling plays and stuff like that. And I was watching y'all's show. I was watching y'all's show.
Starting point is 01:12:11 And now that you're right, now that you're retired, right, you could kind of, I'm not technically retired. Yeah, you can still get, you can still get busy. Miami. You're out the street. Hell out. Call juice. Two months.
Starting point is 01:12:24 But, but, you know, you could say things, you know, from a different perspective. You know what I mean? Not that you have your show. You know, like, how does that feel being able to, like, not have that over your... The thing is, I just never wanted to be like, I don't want to be, like, just say stuff for no reason, not just trying to be controversial. And back in the day, like, when we played, we would just say things and cover stuff up because you don't want to be a problem in the locker room. And it's not like we're going to come out now and just start bringing out crazy stuff. But when things were happening back in the day, you wouldn't say certain things like, why you didn't say it back then?
Starting point is 01:12:58 Then we're going to be a problem in the locker room, not trying to get paid looking at us like, no, he's the problem. Like, why he's so worried about himself? You see things that go on in the locker room and you just keep your mouth shut because you're a professional, and that's what you do. And that was like, good or bad.
Starting point is 01:13:12 You know what I'm saying? So when you come out, you say good things about people like, man, da-da-da-da. Or you come and say something like, do you really rock with this person? You give him a genuine answer of how you felt your relationship you had with the person because people have different relationship with different people. Whatever you and Kevin's the Vaski went on,
Starting point is 01:13:27 that's legitimately what's going on between y'all and you know that. So you can speak on your experience and not feel like, no, like this, no, juice, whenever I hear you say something like this, he ain't lying. You know what I'm saying? He's saying something because that's what happened.
Starting point is 01:13:39 That's how he feels. So you could feel any type of way about what he said, but it ain't gonna not line. You know what I'm saying? So that's just how I like, boom, long as you're not just, because you, me, I don't have to do that. I don't have a reason to lie.
Starting point is 01:13:53 Like, I don't want just the people to click on this. Like, you know, I'm just talking, because I like sports, I'm rocking with it, and speaking your truth. I'm speaking my truth, and that's what I'm going to do. So if you don't like it, you don't have to like it, but I'm not lying. So that's just the way, like perspectives and how people feel.
Starting point is 01:14:09 So when I see you talk, me talk, you talk, I like watching do shows. I'm like, he's giving you his genuine answer. You want to ask him a question. You might not like his answer or what are you going to say, but certain reasons why we weren't doing things back in the day because we played for certain teens and we just was trying to keep it.
Starting point is 01:14:25 Cool. I'm a player. I'm a player, I'm a good guy. I'm just walking around here. I'm a leader. I'm making sure everybody's good. I'm not talking about the offense being terrible. I'm on the defense.
Starting point is 01:14:33 Like, if they don't score, we win. I'm trying to lead by example. Like, that's the way you got to do. Do you feel like, but I feel like personally, I feel like that was like a weight on me for some years, right? Because like I was carrying things, obviously that happened in, I'm just in Cleveland, right? That I'm just like, man, damn, like, not that I need to say it to share, like, to just share, but like, it was like a weight on me that, like, you know,
Starting point is 01:14:56 we didn't keep our team together, right? That we let, O'Dell out the door over the situation, right? And I didn't speak up at that point. And then when I had my end of, in the year meeting, they asked me if I thought that they could handle the situation better.
Starting point is 01:15:12 And I say, yeah. Yeah. And I was gone. You know what I'm saying? So it was just like, you know, I don't know if I, you know what I mean? Like, I kind of like, you know what I'm saying? Like people don't know.
Starting point is 01:15:23 Yeah. It's a business, but it's personal relationships. Like, jeans, whatever you say, like, they can cut you. Like, you work for someone. You know what I'm saying? We work for some people. So the more you get the same, which is it, you can get, you might get. Yeah, 100%.
Starting point is 01:15:37 And as a leader at that time, I didn't speak because I felt like what you just said. Like, you know, like I'm carrying the momentum of the team. Like, I'm supposed to be making sure I'm bridging the offense, the defense, the special team as a leader. People that respect you in the organization, you know what I'm saying? So like to be able to speak about something. that's at that point with that topic very close to the heart. That's my mind. Love both of these guys, right?
Starting point is 01:16:01 You know what I'm saying? Like very close to the heart. It's like I don't want to talk and then y'all take my like I'm talking about this side. Talking about that side, right? Which I love people in Cleveland media, but some people in Cleveland media. Yeah, they're here for the drama. Yeah, they're here for the, you know, turmoil, right? Clickbait stuff.
Starting point is 01:16:20 Yep. Right. And then I had my meeting, bro, and I just felt like it was a better way. to approach that situation being on the end of it in the locker room and we could have a conversation but like when I said yes bro I wish you could have seen a look on on the faces bro like I don't know if it was like that when you when you know they asked you take a pick cut or you guys get a but like it was a look on that face and I was just like that's my that's my that's my opinion like you know what I know this man just needed a real conversation mm-hmm like not to like you know
Starting point is 01:16:56 keep on pressing an issue. Like, you needed a honest conversation. And also, I think they trick you sometimes to, you know, ask you those questions to get an answer. Like, I had a coach in Jacksonville, man, if you feel away about anything, you just come, you just come and let me know. We're going to talk like men.
Starting point is 01:17:12 So, you know, we're on a plane. We lose, right, we like, like, you go from 10 and 6 to fucking, you know, whatever, five and whatever. And you know how it fails to win. Yeah. Right? And as a man, if you,
Starting point is 01:17:25 if you're giving me the green light to come talk to you as a as your player yeah and my frustration is while we're on a plane everybody laughing like you know kiki kakhan i fill away right and i think it goes back to you have to know and you have to know and understand the people you draft like a lot of people don't come from losing colleges like you know what i and and i guess this is my biggest thing is like it was so hard for me to to get over a loss yeah like we'll be we'll be in the wednesday I'm still thinking about Sunday. So when I say that,
Starting point is 01:18:01 and when you do grow people the wrong way, like I have a strong-ass personality, you know what I'm saying? So when I'm going to come at you like a man, I'm like, all right, listen, how can we fix this shit? Hey, look, how can we fix this shit? So to me, now I'm a threat. And I'm only doing what you gave me the green light to do to ask you, maybe I'm coming off strong
Starting point is 01:18:24 because we just lost and you see people on the plane You know, they're laughing, they're playing cards. No, this shit means something to me because I know how this shit go when we win. So, like, is it, to me, I don't know, is it, can you get tricked into answering certain things or certain questions? Yeah, like politics.
Starting point is 01:18:43 Yeah. I think you, you got us kind of, damn, that's a good one. That's a good one. I think you got to try to, you can control your narrative. You know what I'm saying? When you're in the league,
Starting point is 01:18:55 know what I'm saying when you're out of it I feel like you could just let them know kind of how you feel but when you end it you just trying to keep like that's the thing about the combine you would learn how to answer these questions you could turn that thing to however you want the question to be asked you ain't got to really answer what they talk about you know what I'm saying so that's a really answer what they're talking about you know what I'm swinging them yeah yeah for sure yeah for sure yeah we did actually you know what they try to set you up yeah yeah well to wrap us up man man let's like to wrap us up man let's Look, you know, I don't give you your flowers, obviously, bro. Like, you know, when I got to Cleveland, man, the city has so much love for you, bro. And there's not too many players that you can go into a city. And they, as big as the team in those cities, bro. And in Cleveland, bro, like, you as big as the city, bro. As big as the team, bro. And there's so much love there, man.
Starting point is 01:19:49 And obviously, that's probably one of the reasons why you took your one day and, you know, retired as a brown. Can you talk about like, you know, what it meant to you, your family, you know, throughout that process to be able to go back to Cleveland and, you know, and hang them up? It was everything, bro. Like, got drafted to Cleveland, seven pick overall, first round went there, and we were bad, you know what I'm saying? But my whole thing was ever since I was young, I just wanted to do my best, try my hardest. And when I got to that city, bro, they just embraced me open arms and I would go to, I love basketball. So I was going to every game. They would give me floor seats to every game for free.
Starting point is 01:20:29 I'm like, are y'all tripping? I'm coming to every gym. I was putting a wig on, dressing like Anders and Bearers, y'all, Baron Davis came. I put the beard on. I'm on the court every game, softball games. It was just going out and then I was just doing things like sushi rock, taking people out to eat.
Starting point is 01:20:44 I was young, rich, and living my best life. You know what I'm saying? So I just wanted to look out for everybody in Cleveland because they was looking out for me. And then I was balling. So they was loving. me and I'm like, man, I love y'all, y'all love me. And we were still losing, but they would still support me.
Starting point is 01:20:59 They would still show love. They'd be like, man, don't worry about to show you the best corner in the league. And, like, just show so much support. So I'm like, anything I could do, I will always show them love. And it wasn't really about the organization as much. Like, we switch coaches, we switch owners to the community of Cleveland. I'm walking around the city and, like, bus drivers. They're like, honking on, Joe, what's up, man, like, love you.
Starting point is 01:21:20 And it's not, like, on some annoying. It's, man, I know who you are. Not like somebody else take a picture of you. And then they're like, who that over there? They're like, oh, that's Joe. Then I don't like the second person. I like the first person. The one I'm walking through and you say, oh, no, that's Joe Hayden.
Starting point is 01:21:34 What's up, man? Boom, man. Good to see you. Love you in Cleveland. Yep. Love that. So there's a lot of first fans. They see me, know me by face.
Starting point is 01:21:41 Like, man, boom, give me a time that they seen me when I sign something for them. Yeah, man, that's awesome. It feels so home for Cleveland, bro. And I know. And I know we bother wrap it up, right? And, you know, we're kind of in our phase of like, you know, fatherhood now can we can we can we can we can we get some insight on coach hayden coach hayden yeah come man yeah got two got two little boys you know joey jet nine and seven my wife is not into the
Starting point is 01:22:04 contact yet yeah not mad at her so i'm doing the flag football thing yep my youngest boy plays for the stillers my oldest boy he plays for the brown you got a house divided they was born my oldest boy was born in cleveland yeah and my youngest boy was born in pittsburgh so that's why they rock into that and they're playing both sides of the ball my youngest boy is playing running receiver corner safety my oldest boys playing receiver and quarterback receiver and quarterback yeah he don't really do too much defense he do linebacker a little bit yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah he don't want he don't like the but what type of coach is joe hayton like or uh uh uh coach hayden we i am this what i am yeah i need to see i need to see effort yeah i effort
Starting point is 01:22:44 you better be going your hardest yeah fast as you can listening like i need listening people i don't need you to just be over there just fluttering your fingers no yeah we need discipline attention You're listening and you're trying your hardest. Give me effort. Ball hit you upside the head, but did you run as fast you could? Did you try? I need you to try. That's your best.
Starting point is 01:23:02 Okay, that's all you got. I might need to put you at guard. You know what I'm saying? Receiving them, that'd be your thing. But how fast are you going to be trying? So I'm real big on effort. I'm real big on trying your hardest and just like, it's a game. I want everybody to just go out there, do your best, sportsmanship and everything,
Starting point is 01:23:16 but we're going to try to win. Yeah. Is it after the games, is it like party at Coach Joe House? See, this is my first season coaching. I got already, they're trying. They're trying to come to the trip already earlier. I'm like, yeah, we might have a mid-season party and the afterseason, but every game, I don't know. Oh, man.
Starting point is 01:23:31 You know, I'm going to go to my house. That's good. I come play. I got two. I got one that I come play for you right now. I'm going to coach myself. I coach my son. We play contact football already.
Starting point is 01:23:41 Okay, you ready. Yes, he started at four years old. Cornerback. Play cornerback, right? So it's something about a, you know, a football player, bro, and I person, like, I wasn't coaching at first. There's a parent. Me either. Me either.
Starting point is 01:23:55 So listen. You saw a bad coaching. Man, you're not by the BIA to teach my son the wrong stuff. Yes. Okay. That's what I walked in there. I walked in. They gave me the head coaching job.
Starting point is 01:24:06 Right? Yes. So I'm showing them like what this shit takes to be a. Yeah. Like if you won't be where I'm at. Then I'm about to show you six inches. Boom. Fuck it.
Starting point is 01:24:15 Yeah, we out here. Open. Close. Closed. Yes. Yes. So, but also the parents respecting me so. much more because all right
Starting point is 01:24:25 all right job it's like you're playing ball right your dad would like son you're gonna be nice but you know that's your dad like you know what I'm saying Michael Jordan come tell you damn boy you're gonna be nice it's different yeah it's different in high sight so I'm so happy I got to do that and still doing that with my sons because I'm showing them not only
Starting point is 01:24:43 firsthand like yeah your dad was I was that nigga I was nice I like that but now I'm gonna show you all the little things my coach has taught me when I was young. Yeah, yeah. So, bro, I'm like, brother,
Starting point is 01:24:55 it's, and I have to cut you off, bro, we had a party every time we won at my house. Every time, Capri Sons,
Starting point is 01:25:02 chips, pizza, pool party. I gotta get right. Man, we're doing it. You're right. Because guess what? We're gonna be hype. It's a family.
Starting point is 01:25:09 But I'm also showing you that, you know, when you win, we win. We part in. You lose. Go home. It's over.
Starting point is 01:25:16 It's over. Hand behind the line. Any snacks? No, no. Take this capris son. Get your ass in that car And I'm gonna see you, I'm gonna see you Monday for prizes. I love it, though.
Starting point is 01:25:27 And also the brotherhood, this is my last thing about the brotherhood. You have a younger brother who life you saves coming up. Can you speak on that? Because I'm an older, I'm an older brother. I have a younger brother who I, bro. I tell my brother I give him the shirt off my back. And also I made him cry like kind of last year, right? You know, like sometimes we are the example for our kids, right?
Starting point is 01:25:50 Yeah. But I told my brother. Like, and nothing's wrong with me, but I feel like my brother is, if anybody I want my sons to repeat after, it's him, right? Because he wasn't brought up in the fame like I was. You know, he didn't, he didn't caught up in anything. He was always who he was, mellow, quiet, was his own man, right? So for me, the more I want my kids to follow, and nothing's wrong following me, but it's
Starting point is 01:26:20 I just know what comes with this, a lot of trials, you know, and you might not be built for that. You know what I'm saying? But my role model for my kids is exactly as my son, man. I mean, it's my brother because he means so much to me, you know, and, bro, when I was reading up on you and going over your history of the story with you, how you see of your younger brother, like, it almost brought tears to my eyes. Like, can you talk about that being your brothers?
Starting point is 01:26:46 That's real being your brother's keeper. Yeah, yeah. No, for sure, man. I say I got four younger brothers and my mom and dad, bro, they were always super big on taking care of your brothers. Look out for your brothers. Y'all are your brother. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:26:59 You are your brothers keeping. Make sure your brothers are good. And that's something I always did. And like, they were just with my homies. Always together, always doing things, always working out. And I will really just put it to my mom and dad, bro. They always just made sure family first, family first. Always protect your bros.
Starting point is 01:27:14 So when that situation happened, man, we was at a cookout, you know what I'm saying? ended up leaving the cookout, going upstairs to go get some food. And I just felt wrong. I'm like, hold up. Like, everybody's up here eating. And I went back downstairs to the pool, walking around. I looked down, little brother in the bottom of the pool.
Starting point is 01:27:31 So jumped in there, pushed him out, saved him. And they had the ambulance. A helicopter came in, flew him to the hospital. And he's good to go. But just that feeling of like, man, wherever your brother's at, making sure my dad always in my head. Make sure your brother's good. Make sure your brother's good.
Starting point is 01:27:46 And he's a special needs too. So he does. Special Olympics and stuff So that's my man You're the ambassador My good man The global ambassador The Special Olympics
Starting point is 01:27:54 So always making sure Jake's good Always making sure Family's good man Because you know It's always That's what you got Yep
