Starting point is 00:02:48 however you may be listening live in Los Angeles, IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me on a Friday. I think this could be my favorite show of the week today in one hour, Blazing Five, a rebound week. I love my picks. week. How are you joy? I'm great. Good morning. Good morning to you. Family was gone last night. I partied till 8.15 and went to bed with my cats. It was quite a night.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Can you leave me alone? I fall asleep. It sounds great. Yeah. No coasters. Living on the edge. So let me start with this. Blazing five in one hour. Even superstars, believe it or not, are human. Rock stars are human. The great artists are human. There are times that games mean more emotionally. Tom Brady has had a lot of bad Sundays in the NFL. You know when he's never been awful? The Super Bowl. Eight of them against elite teams. Never been awful in that game. He's had bad games. Had a bad game this year against Tennessee. Last year against Miami. LeBron James, three biggest games this year, it's not a fluke.
Starting point is 00:03:58 Facing his old team Miami, the night he was going to break Wilk Chamberlain's record. And the Today, Kevin Durant came out and talked about him being toxic. Those were his three best games this year. Isn't that ironic? Aaron Rogers is going to play great Sunday. It's been a bad couple of weeks for Aaron Rogers. The golden boy, the golden arm, fanned over for a decade. But in the last couple of weeks, his brother called him out and humiliated him on social media.
Starting point is 00:04:30 His head coach was fired. A former teammate Jeff Saturday said, Aaron used to roll his eyes at McCarthy and this past Sunday, they were embarrassed at home by awful Arizona. It has been a really bad week for a guy who has mostly been massaged and fond over. What would clean up all of that? What would clean up all of that? What would make all the bad stuff go away? A brilliant performance this Sunday against Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:05:03 32 of 39, couple of touchdowns, no picks, pass a rating 120, and what would we all say by Sunday night? Oh, it was McCarthy. Well, you can't blame Aaron for that. I mean, McCarthy wasn't up to his standards. Don't kid yourself. Aaron Rogers hears everything. He's the Kevin Durant and the NFL.
Starting point is 00:05:25 And for the first time in his career, the narrative has turned. He's difficult. He's got an ego. Rolling his eyes. not a good team player, not self-aware. First time we've heard that in a decade. And the week after McCarthy leaves, he is going to be so focused,
Starting point is 00:05:48 he is going to be so prepared because the only way to douse this fire is with an incredible performance Sunday. Because when that happens, go to Twitter, go to Instagram, go to talk radio, go to the football shows, and we'll all be saying, oh, well, of course Aaron was rolling his eyes. Of course he can be difficult.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Of course he is sometimes grumpy. I will tell you an hour ahead of time, I not only like Green Bay this weekend, I love Green Bay this weekend. I think Rogers will be brilliant. I think they'll score in the 30s, which they have not done a ton of this year. and I think they're going to absolutely roll the Atlanta Falcons. And by Sunday night and Monday morning, the narrative will turn. Hey. Golden guy's back.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Golden arm's back. Aaron did need a fresh face and a new voice. Packers roll huge on Sunday. Let me shift gears to this. I'm not going to lie. I slept well last night. But woke up and this was terrifying and put me in a really bad mood. Let me read the headline.
Starting point is 00:07:10 Laker rumors. LeBron James wants Carmelo Anthony to join Los Angeles. Okay, LeBron, let's talk. Just you and me, I know you're watching. Of course you do. It's part of your morning routine. You sleep in. You have your cantaloupe and your toast and your eggs.
Starting point is 00:07:26 And then you tell your beautiful wife, Savannah, I got to watch the herd. So LeBron, generally on this show, we are very complimentary of you. We are almost never critical. But I want to ask you a question because I respect you so much and you're a very smart guy. LeBron, you and Carmelo are both 6'9. Carmelo is a better offensive player for you at 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 years old. You're both about 2.45 natural weight. But LeBron, I want to ask you a question.
Starting point is 00:07:58 what separated you eventually from Carmelo Anthony? What separated you? You're the same size. Both gifted. In fact, I'd argue Carmelo initially was a more natural shooter and scorer than you. But it wasn't long, maybe by your third or fourth year, you started to separate from Carmelo. And everybody knew there's a reason Braun went number one. There are three things that separated you from Carmelo Anthony, LeBron.
Starting point is 00:08:28 First of all, the gym. You know, that's the thing Carmelo drives by to get something to eat. Maybe Carmelo has a friend named Jim. But you, LeBron, are a workaholic. You are relentless in the gym. First in, last out. You took what God gave you, and the great ones do this, and took every ounce of focus to be a gym rat.
Starting point is 00:08:54 God gave you the skills not to be one and still be great. That's the path Carmello took. The second thing that separated you from Carmelo, you were because you're smart, a very early adapter. Back in 2010, 2011 in Miami, there was no warrior dynasty. We didn't talk about threes all day. And you were ahead of the league by a couple of years.
Starting point is 00:09:17 You started refining your three-point shooting. Year two, year three, year four in Miami, you started jacking up a lot of threes. That was a weakness to your game. So the second thing that separated you from Carmelo, who, by the way, has refused, though he's a great natural shooter, Carmelo has refused to adapt to the three-point shot. Never changed this game. The third thing that separated you from Carmelo is you've always played well with others. Despite being the greatest basketball talent in the world, you take great pride in it.
Starting point is 00:09:53 In fact, many of the 20-year-olds watching today don't remember this. But 10 years ago, do you know the knock on LeBron? He passes too much. He needs to take over more. Be like MJ and Kobe. That was the knock on LeBron for a long, long time. He doesn't want to close. He makes the right basketball move to help others, but he needs to close more.
Starting point is 00:10:18 That again is the opposite of Carmelo, who has always been the kind of guy that's difficult to play with. So, LeBron, we're having this brief discussion this morning. Resentment happens in life when what defines your greatness is a weakness of a teammate. Time in the gym, early adapter, and works well with others are not only elements to your game. They have not only defined you, they have completely separated you from somebody who's as skilled or more skilled, same size, same basketball passion. Don't do it. Don't.
Starting point is 00:11:06 For the record, from just a statistical analysis, Chris Broussard said this this morning on Undisputed, and it needs to be repeated. When LeBron goes to a new team, I do think it's realistic to consider, I don't know, it takes a couple of weeks to figure out how to play with people. if you take out the Lakers, O and three start this year. LeBron not only had never played with these guys, he didn't know most of them.
Starting point is 00:11:36 If you take out the O and three Lakers start, you're on pace to win 58 games. Why in the world do you need Carmelo Anthony? Coming up next, an NFL team that everybody loves, and I should too. They're based here, but I love the Bears this weekend,
Starting point is 00:12:05 and I don't trust the Rams, and I don't think you're going to win the Super Bowl, and this weekend will show you why that is coming up next. Try Vic Cynex nasal spray. Works up to 12 hours use as directed. Vic Cinex nasal spray, cold and flu seasons here. I am skiing tomorrow, Joy, just for one day with my kids. Very excited.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Are you good skier? Good enough. Top of the hill to the bottom I can get there. I'm good enough. Nothing better as a dad's skiing with your kid, by the way. So the big game, the game Monday, there's two games Monday. Everybody's going to be talking about. Talk about Dallas and Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:12:44 I'll get to that later. It's one of my blazing five picks. And the other game we're going to be talking about is the Rams, the flashy, glitzy, L.A. Rams and the Chicago Bears in Chicago. It's not going to snow. It's not going to be terribly windy. is going to be, you know, it's going to be Chicago in December. It's going to be cold.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I live in Los Angeles, right? And I know some of you think, Collins in L.A. He likes all the L.A. teams. And I try not to fall for that. I do think LeBron and the Lakers are, frankly, and the ratings prove it just more interesting. LeBron's left the east.
Starting point is 00:13:13 The conference ratings are down 20% because there's no LeBron in the Eastern Conference. But I'm really not sold on these Rams. I think they've peaked early. I like the Bears this weekend. And I'm going to give you three reasons why I believe we need to settle down on the Rams. I think the Chargers right now are the better team in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:13:32 And I don't think the Chargers are going to win the Super Bowl either. The number one thing about the Rams and I've seen every preseason game, I've seen every game I've seen every snap. There's three reasons that I don't love them. Number one is they're 18th in run defense. And I'll tell you why that's terrible. Because the Rams are generally ahead in games late. Teams don't even try to run on the Rams late.
Starting point is 00:13:53 They're throwing against the Rams. When Peyton Manning's Colts and Tom Brady's Patriots have like 20th best passer ratings in the NFL, that's because Brady and Manning lead in the fourth quarter in 90% of their games and the way to catch up is pass. So those stats don't mean anything. For the Rams to be 18th in run defense and they lead virtually all their games by over a touchdown late tells you, this is a bad run defense. I was telling a friend last night, I could see Dallas coming right into Los Angeles,
Starting point is 00:14:24 handing the ball off to Zeke 38 times and walking out of here with an ugly, low-scoring win over the Rams. Rams run defense is a real problem, and the best way to kill a good offense is to play keep-away. Milk the clock, run the football. That's what Chicago is going to try to do this weekend. Pound the football. So that's the first thing I don't like about the Rams. The second thing is they have a really weak home field advantage. Vegas considers home field.
Starting point is 00:14:54 somewhere between three to three and a half points. A field goal. In New Orleans, Green Bay, when they're good, Seattle, it's close to four. The Rams home field's about one and a half to two. If they play the Cowboys in the playoffs, it'll be 60-40 Cowboy fans. If they played the Bears or a Philadelphia, it would be at best for the Rams of 50-50 split. They don't really have this massive home field advantage. They're still growing with the community.
Starting point is 00:15:24 And number three is, and this baby out there, but living in Connecticut for the previous 10 years and living in Los Angeles, it is easier here. You don't really grind here. There's not as many bad days here. Warm weather teams historically have been underachievers in the postseason. Houston Texans have underachieve. Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay, San Diego Chargers, Arizona Carters. Arizona Cardinals, Rams last year, were awful in the playoffs. Listen, there's no getting past it.
Starting point is 00:15:59 Football's hard. And football practicing in cold weather, driving to it in cold weather, living in cold weather, it creates a toughness and a medal. I watch the Rams sometimes are kind of soft. Warm weather teams, kind of soft. You know who's never soft? Baltimore's not always great. They're never soft.
Starting point is 00:16:23 New England's not over Philadelphia, Seattle. They're not always great. They're never soft. So I am out on the Rams as a Super Bowl team. I think they're glamorous and they're fun and they're exciting and there are a lot of things. But I think they'll go to Chicago. They'll be a little cold and uncomfortable. And I think the Bears on Monday morning are the team.
Starting point is 00:16:48 We're going, watch out. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. People forget, Joy, by the way, they only scored 13. Remember the playoff game last year? They felt, they only scored 13 points.
Starting point is 00:17:04 They were overwhelmed. Their strength special teams was a weakness. They looked out of complete sorts when they trailed in that game. They had no pushback. So I think we're forgetting sometimes this team in LA go back to the playoff game last year. In the biggest crisis moment, they were awful. I would say they're a little different of it. They feel like a different team this year.
Starting point is 00:17:24 All right. You have some different pieces. All right. That's why I like Akib Taleb. I do think he adds a little grit. Yeah, a little edge. So on paper, Aaron Rogers and Josh McDaniels seem like they could be an ideal fit. Obviously, McDaniels know how to, knows how to work with great quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:17:41 The greatest ever, Tom Brady, knows how to build an offense around that quarterback. But former Patriots linebacker, Teddy Bruske doesn't think it's so simple. Josh McDaniels may be the best thing. for Aaron Rogers in terms of giving him a system that he can trust. But I don't think Aaron Rogers wants that. Aaron Rogers wants the power in terms of I want to be able to do what I want to do and turn this play whatever you call into whatever play that I turn it into, and that's my best skill.
Starting point is 00:18:08 But that skill's running out for it. It's like you've got to bring in a coach. The first question you ask him is, do you and Aaron you think we'll get along? And a lot of coaches are going to say, yeah, yeah, we'll get along. I love Aaron Rogers and all this and all that. But once you start calling plays, things change. Aaron Rogers does like to make his own rules. That's what I've said, Joy, that I don't think McCarthy and Aaron were an innovation struggle as much as a power struggle.
Starting point is 00:18:37 I think Mike wanted him to stay on play, and Aaron tends to be an ad libber. Well, then, I mean, quite frankly, how are they ever going to be successful again in Green Bay? Very good question. I mean, Aaron Rogers might be a great all-time talent, and you can argue maybe the most talented quarterback in the NFL, but there's a whole other side of the ball that he doesn't, he's not on the field for, and a lot of other positions that have to be coached.
Starting point is 00:19:07 This is, this is, you know, again, it's, you can't make the decisions for everybody. I don't know. I mean, I have a hard time believing that, It's that deep that Aaron is going to be so involved in the situation. It's going to be somebody that can only work with Aaron. I would hope that he's a bigger picture person than that. The whole thing is fun to cover.
Starting point is 00:19:30 It's a real story. It's very fascinating. It's fascinating. It's going to be interesting to see how it turns out. Albert Breer, in a little over an hour, is going to have the update list. It is a fluid situation in Green Bay with Aaron Rogers as the next coach. Okay. Well, the Chiefs have faced the three top ten scoring defenses this season,
Starting point is 00:19:47 hardly flinched. They won two of the games, getting at least 30 points each time and lost the third, even though their offense scored 40 points. But they haven't faced a defense like Baltimore. The Ravens have the NFL's stindiest defense, both in points 17.8 per game and yards, 281.7 allowed. So they haven't faced a quarterback like Lamar Jackson either on the other side of all, which is why the media asked Chief's defensive coordinator Bob Sutton yesterday, and here is his answer. I don't know if we ever have. That, you know, we've played against you know, our first year, our G3, when he was in it. And they were similar to that, but probably a little still more NFL offense involved.
Starting point is 00:20:29 I played against Kaepernick when they were a lot like this, but still probably more NFL offense. And we've never played a guy against a guy as fast as us. Yeah. It is an interesting matchup because the Chiefs defense is a little bit different now. They have gotten some pieces back. have. But Lamar, like you said, there's no tape on Lamar. Think about this, Joey. So this has been the year of the offense, right? Right.
Starting point is 00:20:54 More points, more touchdowns, quarterback numbers. Two games this weekend. Flashy Rams offense against the Bears, great defense. Flashy Chiefs offense against the Ravens defense. What happens Sunday night Monday when the Bears and the Ravens win and we're like, okay, we're back to regular football, which is September, October is rainbows and sunshine. but if the Bears and the Ravens win, and I think it's really possible,
Starting point is 00:21:21 I don't have the Ravens in my, you know, Blazing 5, but I think, you know, I think it's very possible. It could change the narrative that, you know what, it's cold weather, keep your eye on the Ravens, keep your eye on the Steelers, keep your eye on the Bears, keep your eye in Dallas, which plays real defense. I mean, I was going to say we just saw that with the Saints and the Cowboys. Yes, we did not give the Cowboys any chance whatsoever
Starting point is 00:21:43 and I think they were ever going to be able to score with the Saints. So good point. If that happens this weekend, Bears Ravens, the last three times a great offense has faced a great defense, the defense will be three and O if the Bears and the Ravens win. Well, you know what they say, Colin. Defense wins championships. And things come in threes. I think they say that too.
Starting point is 00:22:01 They say a lot of things. Maybe airline crashes. Finally, sticking with the Chiefs, the day after they released Kareem Hunt, Patrick Mahomes, went out of his way, reportedly, to address the situation before the team boarded their flight to face the Raiders. Backup quarterback Chad Henney told him. Yahoo Sports that it showed Mahomes is the light years ahead of the other young guys in leadership, in the leadership,
Starting point is 00:22:21 or ahead of a lot of young guys in the leadership department. But the biggest praise came from his center, Mitch Morris. He said it was definitely a moment. It was just another peg on his leadership resume that he's absolutely blown out of the water this year. The way he carries himself in the locker room is just special. And when you bring that kind of confidence and
Starting point is 00:22:37 intensity at the same time, it's infectious. I thought this was an important thing to do. I think I don't know how a lot of locker rooms handle when you have a situation like that. And I mean, obviously, Kareem Hunt was a huge part of their team and strategy. So I think in any situation, when you just address it right away and just clear the air, it kind of gives everyone some sort of relief.
Starting point is 00:23:00 And when it's the leader of the team that's doing it and not just the coach, I think that that changes the environment. Because, I mean, this could have really affected the chiefs in a huge way. I mean, obviously, it's the Raiders. They should be the Raiders in the way. I think it's a real thing. It's the kind of thing I like. Patrick Mahomes, for all of his flash as a player,
Starting point is 00:23:19 he's got it. Every time he steps to the mic, he's humble, no nonsense. It's a very Dak Prescott Andrew Luck quality, which you know, I'm boring, I like. I wouldn't go as far with that with Patrick Bahams. He's still got a little fun and edged as to him. But he's pretty humble. No, he's definitely humble. That's for sure.
Starting point is 00:23:39 But he is, he's shown this year. Isn't that amazing, a guy like me who's never humble? loves humble? I want to say you're never humble. You're generally not humble, but that's fine. I don't need people to be humble, actually. Doesn't bother me. That's funny. Joy with the news.
Starting point is 00:23:56 Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lai News. You're generally not humble, but you've had a humble moment, Colin. Okay, so here's a story. I thought this was kind of cool. Mike McCarthy pack her coach. Generally, if you get fired, they pack your stuff up,
Starting point is 00:24:10 send it to your address. Sure. Mike McCarthy came back to Green Bay. and addressed the Green Bay players and staff. They gave him a standing ovation, which is really cool. It's very unusual for this to happen. In fact, I've never heard of it happening. He got a standing ovation two from Green Bay players.
Starting point is 00:24:28 So this proves two things. Number one, this is what we talked about yesterday. Green Bay is nice and Green Bay is family. Josh McDaniels is snarky, northeast, and an outsider. And Jim Harbaugh is loud, intense, a little bit of a bully, and an outsider. Green Bay's nice, their family. This is how they treat people they fire. They fire the coach. They bring him back and give him a standing ovation. They fired their general manager and actually decided let's give him a cubicle down the hall and demote him. That's the first thing.
Starting point is 00:25:00 That's why I'm not sure this organization is ready to go and get the best candidate, which is the guy that's going to push back on Aaron, Harbaugh and McDaniels. We talked about this yesterday. The second thing I take away from this is if I'm the New York. Jets. I hire Mike McCarthy by this afternoon. Okay. Farv, Rogers, he was in the middle of that handoff and handled it brilliantly. He can handle New York's egos and New York's media. Jay Glazer came on the show yesterday and said, people don't understand. When Farve left and Rogers took over, it was a mess. And McCarthy made it work.
Starting point is 00:25:48 When Brett Farr was there, and Brett went, it went from Brett to Aaron Rogers. Brett made it really bad on Aaron Rogers, and really bad is really underselling it here. It was really, it was filthy on how bad it was for Aaron Rogers. And Mike, it's just how Brett treated Aaron and how it looked. There was Brett's team, and Mike McCarthy then went and moved on to Aaron Rogers. And even when Brett wanted to come back, it was doing interviews on Greta Van Sustra, and Mike was the one who said, I'm sitting there. I'm sticking with Aaron and I'm building them up.
Starting point is 00:26:18 And he built his confidence up. Let me talk for a second about Mike McCarthy. Divorces happen and I've said that from day one. But Mike McCarthy did not forget football. I'm being told constantly, got to have Sean McVeigh. Yeah, I watched Sean McVey in the playoffs last year. His team was overwhelmed.
Starting point is 00:26:38 Matt Nagy. Matt Nagy. That defines great football. Let me ask you this. What coaches right now are having great years in the NFL? 67-year-old defensive-minded head coach Pete Carroll is having a hell of a year. He's rebooted this franchise. He would be my coach of the year.
Starting point is 00:27:05 You know who also is having a great year? 66-year-old defensive head coach Bill Belichick. Who would I name as my newcomer of the year? 57-year-old Frank Reich. Andy Reid's having a great year. He's 60. I know, I know. Sean McVey invented football.
Starting point is 00:27:28 You've got to have a new young guru. No, not really. Not really at all. This league is still dominated. Super Bowl trophies accumulated by older guys. Pete Carroll's having a great year. College football is dominated by 67-year-old Nick Saban.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Mid-50s Urban Meyer dominated the Midwest for the last six, seven years. I'm hearing a lot of this. You got to go get for Aaron Rogers, that hot new guy down in Oklahoma, Lincoln, Riley. Let's think about that for a second. So let's fire an older, successful coach. And let's bring it, who's won a lot, by the way, who's having a rare bad year, Mike McCarthy, and let's run him out and hire this hot college coach.
Starting point is 00:28:20 You know what that sounds like to me? What Philadelphia did with Andy Reid and brought in Chip Kelly. Andy Reid got you to a Super Bowl, five NFC championships, had a rare, bad two-year stretch, run them out of town, bringing the hot college guy. How did it work? And what did Philadelphia go back to doing? Well, Andy Reid now is the number one seed in the AFC,
Starting point is 00:28:41 the 60-year-old guy. He ran out of town. Philadelphia is a mess, but Philadelphia did win a Super Bowl hiring who? Oh, God. What do you know? know one of Andy Reid's disciples. You can tell me that Mike McCarthy didn't know anything about football. You keep convincing yourself that the old guys, no way, man, you need Lincoln Riley.
Starting point is 00:29:02 There's got to be a 21-year-old in the Mid-America conference. Get me the barista at Starbucks. He's cool. Yeah, he's never coached football. He is cool. Sean McVadden done squat in this league. He's fun. Been to the playoff once.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Got humiliated at home against Finesse Atlanta. Come on, Matt Nagy? Smoking mirrors. Cool. He's David Copperfield. He makes Trubisky look good. He's a magician. He hasn't proven anything.
Starting point is 00:29:29 This league is still controlled by Bill Belichick, college football by Saban. Pete Carroll's had a great year. The two best play designers in football are 55-year-old Sean Peyton and 60-year-old Andy Reid. Those guys are still wizards. And those guys, coordinators leave and become successful head coaches. So this whole thing that Mike McCarthy forget, got football. If I'm the New York Jets, I'm on the phone today. Sam Darnold needs guidance. This guy, nine of 11 years made the playoffs. Don't tell me he can't coach. Now, again,
Starting point is 00:30:02 I'm not saying he and Aaron hadn't run their course. I get it. No question. I'm not banging on Aaron here. I get it. Good people, two good people can just hit a ceiling. Pat Riley always says 10 years in. Sometimes you just, people are grading. I get it. but this idea that, you know, Aaron's going to be saved by a hot shot and McCarthy's going to, you know, go out there and need a life preserver to stay above water. I don't buy it for one second. I think Aaron's hard to coach. There's no perfect coach for him. And Mike McCarthy should be employed by an NFL team called the Jets tomorrow morning.
Starting point is 00:30:38 Coming up next, trash talkers. He, he, he, he, oh, was fold like a deck chair. And we saw it last night. Plus, DeAngelo Hall. his thoughts on my takes so far on today's show. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the IHeart Radio app. One hour from now, Albert Brear stops by Monday morning quarterback.com.
Starting point is 00:31:07 The very latest on the Packers opening, Josh McDaniel. There's a lot of coaching stuff going on. For the record, both Jim Harambaugh and Brian Kelly, I've been told to put their names in the NFL circle. if it generates any interest. Brian Kelly won some Coach of the Year award last night. DeAngelo Hall played for a decade and a half in the NFL, a multiple time pro bowler. So I said a couple of minutes ago, I wanted to do it first, then bring you on to respond. We have, this is the way sports work. Is that the media, and I include myself in this, I try not to do this, DeAngelo,
Starting point is 00:31:41 but sometimes I do. We fall for the shiny new toy. Instead of just saying LeBron's the MVP, that's Westbrook, is Derek Rose, it's James Hart. It's new. It's fun. It's fresh. We can't give MVP to LeBron and Michael Jordan every year. Got to give it to Carl Malone. Got to give it to somebody else. Right now the new thing is got to have the hot new coach, got to have Lincoln Riley. Everybody's got to have Matt Nagy, and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:32:02 Pete Carroll's having a great year. Seems like Mike Tomlin's in first place. Bill Belichick's having a great year. Nick Sabin's almost 70. What do you make on the hot coach, the college coach coming to save Aaron Rogers? I mean, I don't know if Aaron Rogers needs to be saved,
Starting point is 00:32:18 but it is something to be said about innovation, you know, about just changing the status quo. And sometimes in the NFL, that's a good thing, sometimes it's a bad thing. I think at the end of the day, it has to be a combination of both. You know, you have to consistently do some of the same things that Aaron's been successful doing
Starting point is 00:32:42 and that's been successful in the National Football League, but at the same time it's about jumping on that wave kind of right before, kind of like with the Wildcat. So the Wildcat kind of took off for a little while. It wasn't meant to be a base offense. It was meant to be like a wrinkle in an offense. Same thing when we had RG3 kind of using that RPO stuff. What was the RPO?
Starting point is 00:33:07 Kind of read option, him reading lineman, but being able to pull it and pass and throw the ball to Pierre Garsohn that year, he had, you know, 120 catches. And no one seemed to figure out how to stop it. But as we kind of got later into the year, teams started to try to figure it out. And by the following year, they did. Oh, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:33:28 And it was something where we felt like, man, we can't just run that. We have to run certain things off of that. And so, yes, you have to have a, you know, a coach who can change things up and kind of innovate the game a little bit. But at the end of the day, it's still football. You still have to try to spread guys out.
Starting point is 00:33:45 You've got to block them. You have to be able to run the ball. Got to tackle well. Yeah, you got to tackle well. By the way, when you were in Atlanta, did you see the Bobby Petrino thing? I did. I was there with that. Okay, no, explain what happened there because that didn't work.
Starting point is 00:33:57 Now, I will say this. Over the years, I've grown to kind of reflect back on that situation in a different way than if you would have asked me that five years ago. And so I do think by Patrino was a great coach. I think he was a really good offensive mind. Bobby Petrino's big hang-up for leaving was, I expected to work with Michael Vic. I'm not working with Michael Vic,
Starting point is 00:34:22 which is understandable. At the time, he was the best athlete in the National Football League. Coaches were salivating to get their hands on a guy like Michael Vic. And so I understood Bobby's wanting to leave because he didn't have Mike, you know. Did I agree with it? No. But the thing that made Bobby a little different was just Bobby didn't really understand
Starting point is 00:34:43 how to talk to, to men, to other men. He was always used to being that college coach, that voice, that dictator. He didn't realize, like, some of these dudes are 30-plus years old. Some of these guys have kids, wives at home, you know, their parents themselves, like they talk to their kids the way you're talking to them.
Starting point is 00:35:03 Right. And so that, to me, was the real big disconnect. Lincoln, Riley is not that way. And that's how I feel about Coach Riley. When I see him talking, when I see him around his players, I don't feel like that's the problem he'll have. But a lot of college coaches who jump into the pro ranks who don't have that experience, that tends to be their number one hang up is, man, how can I communicate with these guys who are now my equal?
Starting point is 00:35:27 Like you can't coach as a dictator in the national football. Can't do it. Even Belichick behind the scenes, they say, can be funny and glib and it's much more of a players coach than people. I've heard that too. Yeah. So there's a reporter here for the Green Bay Press Gazette. That's a big newspaper there. Well, it's a small newspaper, but it's their newspaper.
Starting point is 00:35:48 Pete Doherty. This is hard to do. When you're in a small town and you're covering the team, it's hard to be brutally honest. Because you got to go to the grocery store. There's one in town. He comes out and I got to give this guy Pete Doherty credit. He said, he goes, actually the Packers job isn't terrible, but Cleveland's a better job. He said, first of all, it starts with personnel.
Starting point is 00:36:08 They have an elite pass rusher, Miles Garrett. They have an elite corner, Danzel Ward. They have their quarterback they like, who looks. to have a 10-year career. We have an older quarterback, and then the personnel in Cleveland's better than Green Bay. The second thing he says is they're swimming in salary cap room, and we're not. And let me add this, because Aaron's making 33 million next year, that ain't getting better, it's getting worse for Green Bay.
Starting point is 00:36:29 Let me ask you, when I say Browns, when I say Green Bay, because they both have openings, to you, which is a better job? I mean, you got to define better. I mean, a lot of people definition of better for, like better for one coach, Bruce Ariens. Let's throw his name. Okay, Bruce Ariens, isn't to be around a guy like Aaron Rogers, who is an established passer, who's an MVP, who's a Super Bowl winning quarterback, who has been to the mountain top. And who just got tired of an old coach. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:37:08 And who's making $33 million a year or something around those lines. better for him is Cleveland. He can teach a young quarterback that I can groom, teach the way that I've taught all these other quarterbacks that I've had, and a guy who's probably not going to question every single thing that I say as a coach. And I'm not saying
Starting point is 00:37:29 Aaron's going to do that, but that's just a perception that you see. What you're saying is basically one of the best candidates on the market, and I believe you to be right. Bruce Ariens would be an excellent candidate. And what you're saying, for Bruce Ariens, Baker and the Browns is actually a better fit. I think you're right. And for a lot of coaches, where they are in their situations, they might not want to deal with that extra headache of what we're perceiving Aaron Rogers to be like. Because, like, I almost feel bad for Aaron because, like, before I, you know, I kind of was thinking, you know, when Winston Moss quote came, I just tweet came out.
Starting point is 00:38:08 You know, I was kind of like, damn, you know, Aaron, you have to as. the leader of that team, be willing to take the criticism, be willing to have the coach call you out, or be willing to be the scapegoat so all these other young dudes realize, look, this is how it's going to be done. If Aaron's getting screamed on, I show can't mess up or I show have to bring my A game. And so when, you know, when Winston Maugh said that, I was kind of like, you know, dang Aaron. But then to hear Aaron come back and say, look, I've told Coach McCarthy several times. Call me out.
Starting point is 00:38:40 And for no one to have refuted that yet, makes me think that to a certain extent, he is, you know, he probably has done that. And maybe Coach McCarthy just didn't feel like, you know, at that particular time, it was the right time to do that. But I was always a guy who, you know, I had a DB coach, Rahim Moore's, great coach.
Starting point is 00:38:59 And we were really, really close. And he always told other players, like, look, you can't do what DeHaw does. He has money in my emotional bank account. Like he's proven time and time again when it comes down to it, he's going to show up. So you can't act the same way he does. But I also had to know at the same time like dudes are watching me. So, Ra, scream on me.
Starting point is 00:39:20 If you need to cuss me out or do whatever you got to do, do it to a point. By the way, that's part of leadership. You have to. Brady said the same thing. You have to let those guys know that. Look, I understand that I'm a great player and I can get away with some certain things. But at the end of the day, this is the standard we all are trying to live up to. And yeah, some days we don't feel like going 100%.
Starting point is 00:39:40 Nobody does every single day. But when you see me down, somebody else has to bring that energy. And like, that's the process in the league. Like at some point, it's not going to be the same leaders every single day. It takes the whole team to police themselves. Finally, I like the Bears over the Rams this weekend. And you told my producer, Cowherd is on something. Yeah, he is.
Starting point is 00:40:04 I said, bet something. Like we say in my hood, bet something. Is that what they said in your neighborhood? Bet something. If you feel that strongly about what you're saying, and I obviously feel very strongly about what I'm saying, at the end of the day, bet something. Was it in your Blazing Five?
Starting point is 00:40:19 It is. Well, then he's betting something. Okay. But what is he betting, Joy? I want to come up off of this. Whatever happened to that money that we were wagering earlier? I lost it over time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:31 Yeah. Did you bet in your neighborhood as a kid? A little bit. Did you really? Yeah. It was more like nine. And bag of chips and, you know. What are wrong with that?
Starting point is 00:40:41 That was your currency. Yeah, that's all I have, man. Products from the corner store. Eagles, Cowboys, who do you like? I like the Cowboys. I do. It hurts me to say it, but I like the Cowboys. I mean, I just don't see how the Eagles can stop Zeke.
Starting point is 00:41:00 I don't see how they can stop Amari Cooper. He's coming on strong. And even Dak Prescott's actually becoming a really good passer at this point. And that defense is humming, man. The way that defense shut down, the New Orleans Saints, excuse me. I mean, I just don't see the Eagles being able to. Yeah, I just want the shocking moment of the year in the NFL was not just the Cowboys won, how they won.
Starting point is 00:41:21 Drew Breeze had his worst game as a saint. That to me is like, what did I just watch? You know, it's funny, DeAngelo the way it works. There are games over the course of a season that are like every player in the league's talking about, like the Chiefs Rams game. Yeah. Every player in the league was like, you see that thing last night? was a good game. I really think that was the
Starting point is 00:41:38 offensive showcase. I think the Cowboys went over the Saints. It was the second game this year in the NFL. Everybody's like they text our buddies. Dallas's defense, Leighton Vanderech, Jalen Smith is totally, it makes me think the Cowboys are a different team. I mean, it's the reason people love football is because you know
Starting point is 00:41:56 any given Sunday, anything can happen. I mean, because I, to a fault, would have probably bet on New Orleans. I mean, we all would have been the world would have. Yeah. And so I would have been sitting here holding the bag. Coming up next, thanks, DeAngelo, Blazing 5. It's The Herd.
Starting point is 00:42:12 Hour 2, this is The Herd, in Los Angeles, wherever you may be, and however you may be listening. Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1 are Blazing 5 in three minutes. I absolutely love my picks today. Tell your friends, wake the neighbors. We are going to nail it. four and one, maybe five and oh this weekend. I feel like Rex Ryan making guarantees here.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Joy Taylor is joining me, Hour 2. We have Eric Dickerson joining us as well. Back of the hour, Albert Breer on the very latest coaching moves. Green Bay is out there. You're here in Harbaugh. You're here in Josh McDaniels. Where's Mike McCarthy going? Is he going to Cleveland?
Starting point is 00:42:56 If I'm the Jets, I call him today. Joy, how are you? I'm great. Are you getting in the guarantee business? I'm going to stay out of it. I just, I think, I love certain weeks I feel great. about the picks. This is one of them. So if you watch
Starting point is 00:43:08 that game last night, congrats to Tennessee. Boring, Tennessee, quiet, Tennessee. Don't know about their politics, Tennessee. Don't make guarantees, Tennessee. Tennessee was great. Derek Henry was amazing. Jacksonville, by the way, I'm not really into this whole NFL London thing until this morning.
Starting point is 00:43:26 I think it's time for Jacksonville to go play in London. I'm done with them. But I did think it was interesting. Trash talkers are always the ones that fold fastest. Remember Jalen Ramsey before they faced New England last year? Do you remember this moment? I ain't got too much to say, but y'all make sure y'all bring that same energy out here next week and the week after. We're going to the Super Bowl and we're going to win that.
Starting point is 00:44:00 Yeah, they're 4 and 10 since then. And last night quit on national television. Embarrassing third quarter flop by one Jalen Ramsey. Rise up in Atlanta, dead. the underdogs, life support. Saxonville quit on national TV. Rex Ryan, Mike Dicka, Jerry Glanville, trash talkers. Doesn't last. Doesn't last.
Starting point is 00:44:29 Boring Tennessee. That's a team I can put my arms around. You know, it's funny. When I was in Vegas out of college, I covered boxing, and Mike Tyson became legendary. And Mike Tyson would walk into the ring, and he was originally. And he was the richest boxer on the planet. He was making 20, 25, 30 million a fight, minimum. And Mike Tyson would walk into the ring
Starting point is 00:44:51 with what appeared to be a hotel towel over him that they just cut a hole over. No pomp, no circumstance, no hype, no sequins. He would wear black trunks, which he appeared to buy it Dick's sporting goods on the way to the fight, and that hotel towel cut out. And he'd walk into the ring. He never made any guarantees, never made any promises.
Starting point is 00:45:20 That's what I like. Rise up in Atlanta, underdog masks in Philly, Saxonville. I don't care about your dog masks. I don't care about your guarantees. I don't care about your nicknames. Tennessee's boring. And by the way, if you looked at their schedule, they're going to be nine and six playing the Colts and Andrew Luck in the last weekend.
Starting point is 00:45:45 never forget cam newton was on top of this league for about an hour now cam sometimes i think he's more into fashion than football never been a big london NFL guy but as of this morning why you just ship him over there go ahead i don't think anybody will miss them including people in jacksonville all right here we go the blazing five sponsored by chilies three for ten dollar deal to go starter entree Coke, pull up curbside, get it to go. The holiday is easier. Here's our Blazing 5.
Starting point is 00:46:21 That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up. It's Collins, Blazing 5. Patriots and Dolphins plus seven and a half. I really like this number. By the way, the Patriots have lost four of their last five games on the road in Miami. The Patriots are just three and three on the road in Miami. and they don't make you uncomfortable. They have only 19 sacks, second fewest in the NFL. Brady hasn't been good there. They've got the division mostly wrapped up. And by the way, the Dolphins defense, they get after it.
Starting point is 00:46:57 They are third in the NFL in takeaways over the last month. New England escapes with a win, 27, 23, but I love Miami plus seven and a half. Falcons at Packers Like Green Bay minus 4.5. Like it, I love it. Listen, Aaron Rogers has chewed up the Falcons in his career like nobody else. And the Falcons are on a four-game losing streak. They were on life support last week, lost at home to Baltimore,
Starting point is 00:47:26 and I think they've packed it in. This is a bad defense. It's the first game after Mike McCarthy was fired. And I think Aaron Rogers knows I can turn and turn. pivot out of the bad, ugly press. He'll be precise. Packers in a blowout, 32, 22. Broncos at 49ers.
Starting point is 00:47:47 Again, Denver's coming off big wins. Everybody now beat the Steelers and beat the Chargers and just lost Emmanuel Sanders. Their leading receiver who led them in everything. Targets, catches, yards, he's gone for the season. I also think, if you look at the 49ers home and away, They're a tough out at home. Broncos are an average road team, three and three on the road this year. Bottom line, if San Francisco limits turnovers, I'm going to take the five points with the Niners.
Starting point is 00:48:19 Doesn't matter who wins. It's a 24-23 win. Way too many points for, I think, a Denver offense that will miss their star receiver. Eagles at Cowboys. This is really a numbers game. I don't bet teams I bet numbers. Philadelphia plus three and a half. I'm going to take the Eagles here.
Starting point is 00:48:38 Bottom line is, if it was three, I probably pass. But Philadelphia and Carson Wentz have been very good against the NFC East. He's 7 and 1 against the NFC East over the last two years. And Dak Prescott not only has fumble issues, he's been sacked 45 times this year the most in the NFL. Yes, the Cowboys have won four straight. But all of those wins are by eight points or fewer, and would it shock anybody if Dallas pulls back a little,
Starting point is 00:49:05 after that wildly emotional, standalone national TV game, I think the Cowboys win an ugly, low-scoring close game, 26, 24. But I'm going to take, this is just a number. Three and a half, you have to take Philly. Rams at Bears. Upset alert, Bears plus three at home, cold and slightly windy Chicago. I'm going to take it. First of all, there's one great defense in this game.
Starting point is 00:49:32 And post- Thanksgiving, this isn't close. The Bears are top five in everything. Takeaways, total yards, points per game, rushing yards. They're five and one at home. They're a young team and young teams tend to play much better home in a way. Yes, I know both offenses are really high-powered, but the Rams offense did not look good last week, and Jared Goff is in a little bit of a slump.
Starting point is 00:50:00 I'm going to take the field goal, the home team. You know, these Sunday night games, These Sunday night games, young home team coming off a loss, Soldier Field is going to be nuts. I'm going to take the Bears with an upset win, 27 to 26. The Blazing Five sponsored by Chili's 3 for $10 to go deal, starter entree Coke, perfect play for the busy holidays, and your very hungry family.
Starting point is 00:50:29 I feel very good. I don't want to make any personal guarantees, but I feel very strongly about my picks this weekend. Well, you can't really, you know, can't really make fun of Jaylon Ramsey for making guarantee and then slide into it. Yeah. Coming up next, you know, it's a real talent to take somebody who's struggled in life and they come into your family and all of a sudden they flourish.
Starting point is 00:51:00 And I want to talk about the new. England Patriots who are in cruise control right now once again in their division and the Josh Gordon story and why we got to pump the brakes. I understand, but there's an NFL team, not just the Rams, we got to pump the brakes on. Plus Eric Dickerson around the corner. That is coming up next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Three for $10 deal, Chili's. My blazing five, I like the dolphins to cover. Green Bay blowout winds, San Francisco, Philadelphia to cover, and Chicago to upset the Rams. By the way, I think this story deserves some attention for a couple of minutes here.
Starting point is 00:51:41 Josh Gordon, who had a very troubled life, a super talented guy, has been, as you know, acquired by New England, which has a little bit of a quarterback wide receiver dilemma this year. Philip Dorset, guys getting hurt, gronks not available, Edelman off ACL. Josh Gordon said yesterday on Tom Brady. He's a family man. He fased times with his kids. something I can relate to with my family. It's good to be able to be in such close proximity to learn from Tom.
Starting point is 00:52:07 I look up to the guy. He's doing everything right. I just enjoy my time around him. First of all, this speaks very highly of Tom Brady. We've had guys before with Brady that go a little sideways. I mean, Randy Moss's career in Oakland, people were like done with Randy Moss. He went in. Corey Dillon wasn't for everybody.
Starting point is 00:52:25 He worked with Tom Brady. He's taken marginal players, troubled players. Once again, Tom Brady. they have created an amazing culture. And that's the second thing here, that I think culture is underrated. When you hire a coach, everybody's like, oh, he'll fix the offense, he'll fix the defense. No, you have to fix the culture. The next Green Bay coach, the next Cleveland coach, create a culture.
Starting point is 00:52:49 You can't save Josh Gordon with tricky plays. You save players, not all people are equal, not all people are the same, not all players are the same. There are what you find in the NFL. is there some troubled dudes. Didn't come from perfect lives. And if you can take that player, you may have four or five in a locker room, and you can get something out of him and other teams can't, that's what New England does.
Starting point is 00:53:14 And Josh Gordon with New England this season in nine games, over 600 yards, three touchdowns, 18 yards a catch, he is their only true, deep threat. Good for Tom, good for their culture, and good for Josh Gordon. And with that, we bring in the Hall of Famer over a decade in the NFL, five of the Rams, five of the Colts, Raiders, Falcons as well. Eric Dickerson joining us. I want to talk before we get into some thoughts on Green Bay and the Rams and such, let's talk about culture. So you played for two teams a long time.
Starting point is 00:53:47 The Colts had a lousy culture. I recall the Rams having a better culture. Did you ever play with a guy, Eric, that you thought the culture hurt him or saved him? Well, a little bit of both in a sense. I play with Charlie White from USC running back. I like Charlie. I think Charlie's a great guy. He started off in Cleveland, which I think was kind of my good spot for Charlie,
Starting point is 00:54:10 because back in those days, it really wasn't nothing to do in Cleveland, so maybe get in trouble. And then he came back to L.A. and played with myself at the Rams, which was good at first. But once again, you know, the drugs. And like I said, Charlie's a great guy. I think he's off drugs now. but, you know, drink drugs and drinking.
Starting point is 00:54:27 And I won't forget that it was, we came in to practice one day. And Charlie was doing well. Yeah. And all of a sudden, they said, you know, have y'all seen Charlie? I said, no. Well, come to find out, I guess he had some drugs and was out, like beating trash cans together. Beating trash can lives together. You know, and you feel bad for a player because when you like a guy and, you know,
Starting point is 00:54:47 and he was one of my favorite players in going to come through high school. I liked SC because of Charlie White. I spattered my shoes because of Charlie White. So, you know, you always want them to do well. But like I say, yes, good and bad. Yeah. I mean, the reality is football has dozens of different personalities. Totally.
Starting point is 00:55:07 And there's absolutely no question that Josh Gordon needs a strong culture. Yeah, and that says a lot for Tom Brady. I mean, that says a lot about him as a person. When you hear guys say that about him, I look up to him, he's helped me in that fashion. I mean, thinking about my family because, you know, when football, ball is a family. That is your family. Those are guys you wouldn't battle. You know, you cry with them, you're disappointed with him, you win
Starting point is 00:55:30 with them, you lose them. By the way, Eric, it's the only sport that if if you don't have my back, I can lose my career. Like in the NBA, I'm going to get mine, you're going to get yours. But if you're a running back, that's why running backs by Rolex watches for offensive linemen. You got it. I mean,
Starting point is 00:55:46 you depend on those guys, and you see it all the time. Even a quarterback does not have an offensive line or receivers. I don't care. How talent. We've got how strong your arm is, how where you can read defenses. If you don't have the talent out there, it's not going to work. It's just not. That's how it goes.
Starting point is 00:56:03 You know, let's talk about the Aaron Rogers situation. Albert Breer will join us in 20 minutes with the very latest on it. You know, Rogers McCarthy, could I just chalk it up to? That's the NFL. Business.
Starting point is 00:56:18 I'll say this much here. The teams always say, to us, the players, were going in a different direction. That means you're not going to be in that direction. And it's no different for coaches. I think people have this misconception that they can't let coaches go.
Starting point is 00:56:35 McCarthy's been in that 13 years. Hey, his time has come. It's come and gone. So if they fire him, it is what it is. That's football. I mean, you might not like it, but it is. But when they do it to a player, it's like it's okay. We have feelings, too.
Starting point is 00:56:48 Players have feelings. You know, we don't want to get cut. We want to go in the same direction. You're all going in too. So, so. This is just a, it's part of the deal. We're going in a different direction. I think the big thing is, is that, you know, with Aaron Rogers is the guy there.
Starting point is 00:57:02 You know, who would you choose? Aaron Rogers or McCarthy. You choose the star quarterback. You choose the star quarterback. He's not happy with his head coach. They have a history of not getting along. So most definitely, and we're not winning, we've got to go with Aaron Rogers. You know, I think Aaron's going to be really motivated this weekend.
Starting point is 00:57:21 And by the way, I'm the same way. If I ever leave, like when I left my former company or I come here, I don't want the guy that replaces me to double my ratings. And I have no problem. Joy calls herself petty. I think all of us, as I'm a competitive person, is I wanted to beat the guy that was on this show previously, the show. And if I ever left in 10 years, I want the next guy to not beat.
Starting point is 00:57:44 I don't want him to double my numbers. You're going to fail. Aaron Rogers, let's be honest. Aaron Rogers, for the first time of his career, is getting a lot of crap. His brother calls him out on Instagram or whatever. You know, people are saying now Aaron's hard to coach. You think maybe Aaron this weekend going to be a little dialed in and say,
Starting point is 00:58:02 well, what do you know? Coach is gone. Things good. Come on, Aaron, Eric. Everybody's a little selfish, no? Of course, everyone. Look, I mean, when I came back and I played against my old team, the Rams, I wanted to play great. I mean, I did.
Starting point is 00:58:14 I still had 100 yards. We lost the football game, but I had a good game. You know, most definitely, Aaron Rogers is going to be dialed in. You know, will he have a great game? who knows. I mean, he could have a great game. If he has a great game, say, see, we got rid of him, and here we are.
Starting point is 00:58:29 We'd have won two weeks ago, if we'd have got rid of him two weeks ago. But, you know, you never know what's going to happen. I like the Bears to upset the Rams. I think we're going overboard on this whole hot, young coach. Pete Carroll's having a great year at 67. Andy Reid's having a great year at 60. Belichick still runs the league at 66 years old.
Starting point is 00:58:48 Frank Reich is the newcomer, arguably the year. he's 57 years old. You know what the Rams looked like to me, Eric? A little soft. Oh, come on. Eric. You said we're going to lose the Kansas City. I heard you.
Starting point is 00:59:02 You said we're going to lose to Kansas City. You almost did. Does it say almost or did say win? You almost won? Is that what it says? No, he said, when? Don't you think this team, last week, they struggled. Look, you don't play great everyone.
Starting point is 00:59:21 week. That's football. I mean, when you're 10 and 1 or 11 in 1, everyone wants to beat the guy at the top. Everyone wants to beat the guy that says, they're the best football team out there, or he's the fastest. We want to beat those guys. That's what we are. I mean, with this game in Chicago, now, I feel like, I think people get to confuse me thinking about cold weather. It's a cold weather game. It's so cold. Let me tell you about cold weather game. Only time it gets really, really cold. Look, They're cold just like we are. You may say, oh, they used to, bull. They're just as cold as we are.
Starting point is 00:59:55 They are. When you go out there, when the score is close, when the game starts, nobody's cold because we're getting it on. Now, when you start getting your butt whipped, say it's like, 21-0, and you start looking at that school, but you're like, man, we got another two quarters of this nonsense. It's cold. That's when it gets cold.
Starting point is 01:00:12 Other than that, it's not cold. When it's 7-7 or you're up, man, you're not cold at all. They've got heaters on the sideline. They got soup on the side. This is not the old days where you over there with the mittens on and the hood on. Them guys, it's football. When you're on the field, you're not cold? What's the coldest game you ever played in?
Starting point is 01:00:29 Two of them. In that Chicago game and the playoffs and the NFC championship game was cold. Now I played in New England. I mean, it was cold. I mean, in that game, the NFC championship game, you know when it got really cold? It wasn't even really cold at first. And it was cold. Cold as hell.
Starting point is 01:00:41 When we went down 10-0, all right, it was getting pretty chilly out there. Then all of a sudden, we got down, we bought this going to score, and we called a timeout, and it was. There's an argument about, did we call the time out of time? And we went in, the score was 10 zip. I'm like, okay, now that's going to get cold out here. Because trying to score 10 points against the bear's defense in Chicago in the day of the winner is very hard.
Starting point is 01:01:02 When we came back and we went down, you know, 20 to zip, then all of a sudden, you look at the clock. Yeah, 85 bear. You started looking at that clock. Like, ooh, man, it's getting chilly out of it. But now we went back there the next year in 1986, played that same team. Beat him over there. It wasn't cold.
Starting point is 01:01:17 It was cold. It was the same kind of cold. at night, Monday night, it was cold. In December, you know how cold it is? Yeah. But, you know, when you win, when you win, it's not cold. Good senior, man. I haven't seen you for a while. I know, good senior, too.
Starting point is 01:01:29 Can I ask a question? Yeah. Can I get my bed paid up, Joy? You know, I was just thinking of it. Why? What? You know, we're going to, well, I did not have a lot of faith in the Eagles in the Super Bowl last year. I took him straight up. And for whatever reason, he had the inside scoop.
Starting point is 01:01:44 Straight up. You took the Eagles. Straight up. I didn't want no points. Straight up. Yeah. So I took the Patriots. It's like a rational person. $400.
Starting point is 01:01:53 And I can't, I mean, I'm going to have to send some creditors out. Listen, let's go with some guys coming here with some guns on the back. I plan on doing double or nothing for this year's Super Bowl. Okay, so, all right, so after the Super Bowl, can I get paid right after? Can I get a better? Yes, yes. Okay, all right. I will pay up.
Starting point is 01:02:09 Okay, so when we get to that point, we'll bet again. Think I'm a gambling to general. Eric Dickerson. Albert Brewer around the corner, Joy, with the news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news. That's why I don't gamble, Colin.
Starting point is 01:02:24 So we talked yesterday about Bolton board material at the Eagles linebacker, Kamu Gurujah Hill, gave the Cowboys. He said, look at Dallas's history, they always choke. So we'll go down there and make them choke. Well, Doug Peterson was not a fan of those comments. It's unfortunate that the comments were made. I talked to the team a lot about, you know, we don't need to post anything that can be used, you know, on other teams.
Starting point is 01:02:48 website or bulletin board. So it's unfortunate that happened. We still have to go play. They have to play. It's going to be a good football game. It will be. I think it's going to be a competitive football game. And I tell you this.
Starting point is 01:03:02 Dallas, their run offensive line is great. Here's one of my things on DAC. DAC has been sacked more than any quarterback in the league over the last month, yet the running game is great. So it tells you it's not an O-line issue. It's Dak holding the ball too long issue. And I think that'll be, I think Philly's got a pass rush.
Starting point is 01:03:20 I think that game's going to be ugly, close, and pretty low scoring. Yeah, I would agree with that. And this bulletin board material stuff, again, I don't think anyone who's playing really cares about it. Like, it's more for fans and the media, and we're all going to ask about it, so it adds an extra element to the game. This is already in division rivalry. It was already going to be what you described anyway. So this is kind of just Philly getting back into their groove. They're the Super Bowl champs.
Starting point is 01:03:46 Yes. on a winning streak, but I do think Dallas wins this game. All right, so fire shortly after Sunday's loss of the Cardinals, obviously Mike McCarthy was fired, didn't get a chance to say goodbye to the team that he coached for 13 seasons, which is pretty usual. Like, you don't generally get a chance to do goodbyes. No. Not in person anyway.
Starting point is 01:04:05 Well, on Wednesday, he got his chance. You talked about it earlier. Interim coach Joe Philbin allowed McCarthy back into Lambo Field to speak to them, and the players even gave him a standing ovation. Clay Matthews, who plays his entire career under McCarthy, that it was warranted and deserved. I was happy to see it, because obviously, you know, with, I mean, first things first,
Starting point is 01:04:25 you understand this is a business, and not many people get that opportunity once a team moves on from a coach and a player as well. We're in the same boat as well, but for him to invest the past 13 years in this team has given his heart and soul to us and to have that kind of closure, I think it was great of the organization,
Starting point is 01:04:44 Joe, Goody, Mark, everybody who was, everybody who allowed him to come in and kind of, you know, say his peace. So I know we really enjoyed it. I'm sure he did from a closure standpoint, and obviously we gave him the respect he deserved, kind of sending him off with some final words. Well, that was a classy thing to say. It's a very unique situation.
Starting point is 01:05:01 Yeah, like beyond unique. I've never heard anything like this before. It's almost like a lot of the players liked McCarthy. Well, I mean, look, it's Joe Philbin. I told you, Joe Philbin's a classy guy. It doesn't surprise the Joe Phil. It's more about the organization allowing it. I think that most coaches, if the situation isn't bad,
Starting point is 01:05:23 maybe not necessarily like Cleveland. But, I mean, most coaches, when they're fired, like there's a lot of discord amongst the whole team. Listen, I worked at a company. I've worked at companies for 30 years, that when somebody gets fired, you come in and they tell you that, and they ask you to leave the building, and there's often security and your boxers are packed.
Starting point is 01:05:45 That's not, this is not the way it works. Standing ovations, and not the way it works. No. Almost like they were sending a message. Anyway. I don't know. It's a very unique situation. Well, Mar Jackson is a starter, and the Ravens' offense has become run first, as we know,
Starting point is 01:06:00 producing more than 200 yards rushing in three consecutive games for the first time in team history. That change has meant fewer opportunities for Ravens' wide receivers to make plays. But John Brown has no problem with a recent approach. He said yesterday, why try to do something different? that's what we're good at. We're winning. They're doing a great job with the play calling. If you can't stop it, why do something different? Yeah. And I think Lamar Jackson's added an energy.
Starting point is 01:06:24 Listen, Lamar Jackson has limitations. So is Joe Flacco. At least who do the players right now? Who are they playing better with? They're playing better with Lamar Jackson. There's no film on him. I think players care mostly above all about winning. Yes.
Starting point is 01:06:38 So they don't care who it is that is under center as long as it's the W at the end of the game. Think about this, Joy. You were in Miami when the Wildcat started. If you think about how remedial that is, snapped to a running back, and it worked for a year. And then after the offseason. So the idea that Lamar Jackson's style would give people trouble, well, hell, the Wildcat, which was snapping to a running back gave people trouble for a year.
Starting point is 01:07:03 Right. And nothing that Lamar Jackson's doing is necessarily innovative or hasn't been seen before. He's just really good at it. He's just really good at it. And he's a rookie. He's a new player. So everybody does it. little different. So, of course, ride the hot hand. Eventually next year, they're going to have to
Starting point is 01:07:20 change up how he does this. They're going to add in some different plays. They're going to have them say in the pocket more. But right now, you've got to win while you can. Do what works for you. Yep. Enjoy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herdline News. By the way, car shopping's confusing. A lot of terms. Dealer price, list price, invoice. Here's what's not. Go to Truecar.com. Check out the true price. Figure out what the accessories are. Fees are before you go. car.com. All right, listen. So I know the games on our network, Dallas hosting Philadelphia. And listen, I think the two games I want to watch this weekend are that one and the Bears hosting the Rams Sunday night on NBC. And so I understand networks have to pump stuff up.
Starting point is 01:08:08 I get that. But the DAC thing, can I just say to the media and to California, Cowboy fans, let's pump the brakes a little bit. People are going nuts on. The Cowboys are winning despite DAC, not because of DAC. Here's some numbers right now. He leads the NFL in fumbles for all players. Fumbles lost, he's tied for second. Passing touchdowns, he's tied for 22nd,
Starting point is 01:08:36 and passing yards per game, 27. Yet even at Fox, this is how we're promoting the game this week. Sunday, the Cowboys host the Eagles. And if you think Philly has the best QB in this matchup, then you don't know Dad. I mean, that's over the top. Okay, you want to know how many 300 yards games Dak has, Joy? Bagel. You want to know how many three touchdown games, Dak has?
Starting point is 01:09:05 Bagel. But yet, we can't contain ourselves here at Fox. Everyone thought his season was over. But then he made everyone look like. Total morons. He's decked by popular demand. I mean, is that cheesy? We have excellent Emmy Award winning producers here.
Starting point is 01:09:25 The Cowboys didn't score a single point in the second half against the Saints. He's the most sack quarterback in the league, despite the fact the offensive line is great because Zeeks on fire. Fox, do better. Most quarterbacks can only throw the ball. What losers. This stud can throw and run. He's a deck of all trades. Come on! Enough already, Fox.
Starting point is 01:09:51 Remember, here's what's happened during the four-game winning streak. Ezekiel Elliott's had four great games. 187 yards, 201 yards, 143 yards, 135 yards, and combined like 7 TDs. I'm told this one takes a different angle. He's a quarterback, so dangerous that every single player coweres in fear when they have to face him. he is count decula okay that's that is a low point for the network
Starting point is 01:10:21 enough I'm not even going to talk about this game unless we have a public apology at Fox Fox Sports would like to apologize for the inferior quality of the preceding promotional announcements to ensure this does not happen again
Starting point is 01:10:36 we are going deck to the drawing board I like that one that is just we are this is beneath Fox. It is a good game. But they're winning despite DAC, not because of DAC.
Starting point is 01:10:51 Albert Breer breaking stories. He'll be joining us next in the herd. Plus, comedian Bill Bird, Jason McIntyre, last hour. Sunday, it's a Fox NFL doubleheader, starting with Drew Breeze and the high-powered saints, taking on the Buccaneers. Then it's America's game of the
Starting point is 01:11:08 week is Carson Wentz and the Eagles, battle Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys in a huge NFCE's showdown. It's all on Fox, and the Fox Sports app. Check your local listings. You know what? Underrated game there is Carolina at Cleveland? I mean, what if Baker Mayfield goes out, toe-to-to-to, and beats Cam Newton?
Starting point is 01:11:28 That's not a good look for Cam. I get, you know, Cleveland goes in and they can, you know, they can beat a team like a Cincinnati, Andy Dalton, and you can beat a team that's struggling with that. But Cam Newton should be able to against Cleveland and Baker-Mayfield. put it on his shoulders. This is sort of a, Cam, put this puppy on your shoulders. You got to go in.
Starting point is 01:11:52 You got to beat a rookie quarterback. There's going to be a bad look for Cam if he can't make Baker-Mayfield. That is not going to be a good look. And the spreads like a field goal, so it's going to be close. I got some thoughts on LeBron and the rumor that he wants Carmelo in a couple of minutes, too. Let's go to Albert Breyer, senior NFL reporter at the Monday Morning Quarterback via the Coward Global Satellite Network. All right, let's start with this.
Starting point is 01:12:14 McCarthy's gone. I keep hearing. They gave him a standing ovation yesterday, so they like him. Joel Philbin's here. Who is the leading candidate? What are you hearing for that job? The name that I've heard connected to it most
Starting point is 01:12:30 over the last few weeks, Colin, is Josh McDaniels. Now, that would make some sense because they need somebody who can come in there and coach Aaron Rogers. And I know that sounds simple because he's such a great player, but it's actually kind of complicated because how do you challenge? a guy like that. How do you come in
Starting point is 01:12:46 and make him better on a day-to-day basis? There aren't very many people on the planet who have experience doing that with that sort of player. Josh McDaniels actually does. And if you talk to anybody who's coached a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady in the past, they'll tell you the anxiety that comes with it, the pressure that comes with it.
Starting point is 01:13:02 How does give somebody something new on a day-to-day basis who has that volume of accomplishment and experience? And Josh McDaniels is somebody who does have that because he has coached Tom Brady. And so, Josh McDaniels is somebody that I would expect the Green Bay Packers to take a very hard look at. And I think that he's going to have some options out there.
Starting point is 01:13:22 So it's interesting to see if he were to have the option of a Green Bay in somewhere else, how badly he'd want to coach someone like Aaron Rogers because there are challenges that come with it too outside of just being as prepared and as knowledgeable as McDaniels is. If I was the Jets, I'd hire Mike McCarthy tomorrow. I know there's all these young hot shot coaches, but Chip Kelly was a hot shot coach too. 67-year-old Pete Carroll's having a great year. 56-year-old Frank Reich. 60-year-old Andy Reid.
Starting point is 01:13:49 66-year-old Bill Belichick. I know everybody wants to hire the hot new guy. Where do you think McCarthy lands? I'd love to see him in New York with Sam Darnold for a decade. What do you think? I don't think the Jets are impossible. I think it's sort of open with Mike McCarthy. Now maybe a place like Tampa, too,
Starting point is 01:14:05 where they need to reset things a little bit organizationally. I'm with you. I think there's some merit to high. hiring Mike McCarthy. And I use this in my Monday column. I know Mark Murphy, the Packers President, used the analogy during his Monday press conference as well. I don't think this is that different than Andy Reed in 2011 and 2012. No one considered Andy Reid this great offensive innovator in 2012 when he was getting fired by the Eagles. It took getting fired, going and resetting somewhere else, adding some things to his offense. And now again, he's seen as one of the
Starting point is 01:14:38 most forward-thinking guys in the league. To me, you know, this separation for and the Packers could be a good thing from McCarthy if he does what Reid did, which is go back and evaluate things, reset himself a little bit and add some things to what he's done over the last 13 years. And you're right. I mean, Colin, there could be some team out there that benefits from the way that the Kansas City Chiefs benefited from Andy Reid going through that a few years ago. By the way, you have a lot of good sourcing in New England as well as the league. I've got to ask Albert, we consider McDaniels to be the heir apparent de Belichick. But, I mean, Nick Saban's going to hit 70 and he is still clicking.
Starting point is 01:15:17 Belichick and Sabin are tight. I don't see him as guys that want to golf seven days a week. Are we sure Belichick's leaving here? Josh McDaniels may just bolt because you don't want to sit there forever. I think you hit on the right note there, Colin. I mean, I would have told you a year ago based on people that I was talking to, that Belichick could kind of see the end. And it's sort of you got this sense that maybe a couple more years.
Starting point is 01:15:42 years. Maybe he gets to an even 20 and walks away after the 2019 season. I'm not getting that sense at all anymore. I mean, you talk to people in that building this year. The tension of last year is gone. I mean, the relationship with Brady isn't perfect, but it's a lot better than it was last year. And there are people that I talk to there that think he could go another four or five years easy based on how energized he's been this year, based on how passionate he is about his job. And here's the other thing. He's a little like Sabin in this way, too. When you have things set up the way that Bill Belichick has them set up in Foxborough, you really don't have to work as hard because part of the operation becomes turnkey. That doesn't mean that he's working less diligently. He's less prepared than he's
Starting point is 01:16:22 been in the past. But naturally, when you've been in a place for as long as he's been and you have things set up the way you want them, it becomes a little easier to run things. And that would enable you to coach it in an older age. And so I don't get the sense that Belichick's walking out of there tomorrow at all right now. Okay, hardball, according to sources, put his name among NFL openings, Urban Myers, 54, Cleveland, Cincinnati, been a lot of rumors. Harbaugh Urban Meyer. Let's start with Harbaugh. You buy it?
Starting point is 01:16:51 I think Harbaugh will eventually end up back in the NFL. I don't think it's this year, though. I think, you know, there was probably that opening a couple years ago at Michigan. I just, I get the sense that he's probably going to stick around Michigan for at least a little while longer. I fit him in the same category as David Shaw at Stanford. and Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern. Those three guys will all have opportunity whenever they want it. They all have
Starting point is 01:17:15 comfortable situations at their alma mater. They've got good job security at their alma mater. And I think all three of those guys will be able to pick their spot. I think Harbaugh does have scores to settle on the NFL. I don't think it's right now. Okay. Great stuff. Albert Breer, at the
Starting point is 01:17:31 Monday morning quarterback. Nice updates all around the league. Thanks, bud. All right, thanks, Colin. Good stuff. Check him out. By the way, I want to have a comment. A story came out. Laker rumors, LeBron wants Carmello to join Los Angeles. First of all, we all know something about LeBron.
Starting point is 01:17:50 He leaves a team. They plummet. The Cavs won 61 games. He left. They won 19. Miami Heat made the finals. He left. They won 37 games and no playoffs.
Starting point is 01:18:00 He left the Cavaliers. NBA finals last year, they're 5 and 19. We also know that with Carmelo Anthony, that is not the case. He left Denver, the Knicks, and Houston, and there's no big change. In fact, Houston went on a winning streak when he left. What this story does tell me, though, it tells me that LeBron is getting frustrated with this roster, despite the fact they're winning. So he's getting frustrated now with this roster, and I just want to say it again. I just want to say it again.
Starting point is 01:18:29 Kevin Durant made comments this week about playing with LeBron as toxic. Keep convincing yourself that Kevin Durant's going to be a Laker. I don't buy it. You think Clay Thompson could be a Laker because his dad played there and is a broadcaster. I'm told Golden State is not letting Clay Thompson walk because they don't know what they're getting long term with Durant. He's flakier. You keep telling me, Kauai Leonard. Kauai Leonard needs the ball.
Starting point is 01:18:57 Kaui Leonard is flourishing in Toronto. Kaui Leonard, that Raptor team is built around him. He's not coming to Los Angeles to be second-fittled to LeBron. That ain't happening. And oh, by the way, you keep telling me. meet. Well, LeBron and Anthony Davis have the same agent. You think LeBron wants to wait two years? We're halfway to the All-Star game. We're halfway there and LeBron's already frustrated because LeBron planted this story about Carmelo. I'll say it again. The Lakers lack an offensive identity.
Starting point is 01:19:32 Bradley Beals available and would give you one because LeBron's outside shooting is the best it's ever been. Bradley Beale's a top five, six shooter in the NBA, and you have guys like an Ingram, like a Coosemot, like a heart, who are not bad if they're your third or fourth best shooter. Hope is not a business strategy. Kevin Durant, I don't buy it. Kauai Leonard, I don't buy it. Anthony Davis is two years out. Clay Thompson is not happening. Golden State is, you don't think Golden State reads the papers? You think Golden State? You think Golden State? States not hearing about Michael Thompson in the LA room? Not letting him have it.
Starting point is 01:20:11 They know Curry's with him forever. They're going to insure clays with him forever. Kevin Durant may leave, but I wouldn't... How much am I putting on that? I'll say it again. And I'm told everybody is like, Bradley Beals too expensive. He's 25. He's in great shape.
Starting point is 01:20:30 He's averaging 20 to a game with the difficult to play with John Wall. You've seen players leave Russell Westbrook and they get more efficient. Watch Bradley B. He'll leave John Wall. He's averaging 22 now and averaged 23 and a half and have better shots. I know. I keep hearing. Bradley B.
Starting point is 01:20:51 25, coachable, works hard, great shape, elite shooter in a shooters league. If this story tells me, Lakers are playing well, they're 15 and 9, LeBron's already frustrated. He said five games in, I was about to crack. you want to wait another year and a half get moving get moving great last hour tremendous last hour
Starting point is 01:21:15 jason mackintyre mondays headlines today bill burr we are packed hour three in l a it's the herd hour number three this is the herd wherever you may be
Starting point is 01:21:32 however you may be listening live in Los Angeles, Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. You know, people think I'm a LeBron fan, though I've been critical of him. And I am a Patriot Homer, though I've been critical of them. I like excellence. If your team's not excellent, that's a you problem. My job's not to make you relevant.
Starting point is 01:21:57 You be relevant, and I'll talk about you. I'm in the omelet business, not in the egg business. It's got to be made, and I'll talk about it. Didn't talk about the Patriots before the dynasty started. But you know what I was thinking about this? Just a couple minutes here. I was thinking about this is I've always tried to be reasonable with New England. I don't pick them to win every Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:22:13 I don't. I didn't pick them last year. I said during the playoffs, I don't think they're going to make the Super Bowl. The margins have shrunk. And I feel this year, the running game is, if you're a Patriot fan, gives you hope that in this bad weather, all these flashy offenses. But you know, I was thinking about this. The dynasty is about to end for New England. I mean, we all know it's coming to an end.
Starting point is 01:22:33 I'm going to bring on in 15 minutes a guy that's the. the most bitter patriot fan in the world, comedian actor Bill Burr. And don't I deserve one year of just enjoying it and not being like a journalist? Why can't for a year? Why can't from today until the Super Bowl, I just root for a team?
Starting point is 01:22:51 Because I do enjoy excellence, and I've never felt that's professional. That's how I feel about LeBron in L.A. What do you mean? Like when he went back to Cleveland, after he left Miami, I was obviously very petty about it. But I don't think I would have felt that.
Starting point is 01:23:05 way had he gone to another team other than Cleveland. So now he's in L.A. And I'm past it. And I don't want to be that person who at the end of LeBron's career is like the only time I enjoyed watching LeBron play was when he was in Miami. So in 15 minutes, I'm just going to be a Patriot fan. It's fine. I'll allow it. All right.
Starting point is 01:23:23 With Bill Burr. Yeah. I make all the decisions. So I'll allow it. And best for last. We do one of my favorite segments. Monday's headlines today. What will the headlines be Monday in the NFL?
Starting point is 01:23:34 Well, Aaron Rogers is taken on the Falcons on Sunday at Lambo, slightly favored, and I've got a sneaky feeling about that game. Even superstars, believe it or not, are human. Rock stars are human. The great artists are human. There are times that games mean more emotionally. Tom Brady has had a lot of bad Sundays in the NFL. You know when he's never been awful? The Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:24:02 Eight of them against elite teams. Never been awful in that game. He's had bad games. Had a bad game this year against Tennessee. Last year against Miami. LeBron James, three biggest games this year, it's not a fluke. Facing his old team Miami, the night he was going to break Wilts Chamberlain's record, and the day Kevin Durant came out and talked about him being toxic.
Starting point is 01:24:26 Those were his three best games this year. Isn't that ironic? Aaron Rogers is going to play great Sunday. It's been a bad couple of weeks for Aaron Rogers. The golden boy, the golden arm, fanned over for a decade. But in the last couple of weeks, his brother called him out and humiliated him on social media. His head coach was fired. A former teammate Jeff Saturday said, Aaron used to roll his eyes at McCarthy.
Starting point is 01:24:54 And this past Sunday, they were embarrassed at home by awful Arizona. It has been a really bad week for a guy who is mostly been. been massaged and fond over. What would clean up all of that? What would clean up all of that? What would make all the bad stuff go away? A brilliant performance this Sunday against Atlanta. 32 of 39, couple of touchdowns, no picks, pass a rating 120, and what would we all say
Starting point is 01:25:27 by Sunday night? Oh, it was McCarthy. Well, you can't blame Aaron for that. I mean, McCarthy wasn't up to his standards. Don't kid yourself. Aaron Rogers hears everything. He's the Kevin Durant and the NFL. And for the first time in his career, the narrative has turned.
Starting point is 01:25:45 He's difficult. He's got an ego. Rolling his eyes. Not a good team player. Not self-aware. First time we've heard that in a decade. And the week after McCarthy leaves, he is going to be so focused.
Starting point is 01:26:03 he is going to be so prepared because the only way to douse this fire is with an incredible performance Sunday. Golden guy's back, golden arms back. Aaron did need a fresh face and a new voice. Packers roll huge on Sunday. Let me shift gears to this. I'm not going to lie, I slept well last night, but woke up and this was terrifying. and put me in a really bad mood. Let me read the headline.
Starting point is 01:26:39 Laker rumors. LeBron James wants Carmelo Anthony to join Los Angeles. Okay, LeBron, let's talk. Just you and me, I know you're watching. Of course you do. It's part of your morning routine. You sleep in. You have your cantaloupe and your toast and your eggs.
Starting point is 01:26:55 And then you tell your beautiful wife, Savannah, I got to watch the herd. So, LeBron, generally on this show, we are very complimentary of you. we are almost never critical.
Starting point is 01:27:27 What separated you eventually from Carmelo Anthony? What separated you? You're the same size. Both gifted. In fact, I'd argue Carmelo initially was a more natural shooter and scorer than you. But it wasn't long, maybe by your third or fourth year, you started to separate from Carmelo. And everybody knew there's a reason Braun went number one. There are three things that separated you from Carmelo Anthony, LeBron. First of all, the gym. You know, that's the thing Carmelo drives by to get something to eat.
Starting point is 01:28:01 maybe Carmelo has a friend named Jim, but you, LeBron, are a workaholic. You are relentless in the gym. First in, last out. The second thing that separated you from Carmelo, you were, because you're smart, a very early adapter. Back in 2010, 2011 in Miami, there was no warrior dynasty.
Starting point is 01:28:23 We didn't talk about threes all day. And you were ahead of the league by a couple of years. You started refining your three-point shooting. year two, year three, year four in Miami, you started jacking up a lot of threes. That was a weakness to your game. Carmelo has refused to adapt to the three-point shot. Never changed this game. The third thing that separated you from Carmelo is you've always played well with others.
Starting point is 01:28:53 Despite being the greatest basketball talent in the world, you take great pride in it. In fact, many of the 20-year-olds watching today don't remember this. But 10 years ago, do you know the knock on LeBron? He passes too much. He needs to take over more. Be like MJ and Kobe. That was the knock on LeBron for a long, long time. That again is the opposite of Carmelo,
Starting point is 01:29:18 who has always been the kind of guy that's difficult to play with. Don't. For the record, from just a statistical analysis,
Starting point is 01:30:07 Chris Broussard said this this morning on undisputed, and it needs to be repeated. When LeBron goes to a new team, I do think it's realistic to consider, I don't know, it takes a couple of weeks to figure out how to play with people. If you take out the Lakers, oh and three start this year,
Starting point is 01:30:28 LeBron not only had never played with these guys, he didn't know most of them. If you take out the O and 3 Lakers start, you're on pace to win 58 games. Why in the world do you need Carmelo Anthony? Coming up next, for the first time in my broadcasting career, I am going to be a fan. I don't know if it'll last 10 minutes. For the first time? I don't think I've ever been a fan before. John, I don't like being a fan.
Starting point is 01:31:01 I don't think it's my job to be a... Maybe you haven't admitted it. What's so funny about that? We're just keeping a real. It's okay. For the first time, you're going to be a fan. And I may be a fan for 10 minutes, but I'm going to be an obnoxious fan with Bill Burr next
Starting point is 01:31:15 because he's from New England. I live there, not from there, and I'm going to be okay with it. This is a very uncomfortable spot for me. And at all teams, you're going to choose the Patriots. Well, it's because people think I'm a homer. and this dynasty, I love football, and it's been a 15-year dynasty. And I love, like I love, it's going to come to an end really quick.
Starting point is 01:31:35 So can I enjoy anything? Yes, you can enjoy it. Even when you take somebody out for dinner, you want to enjoy it too, even if you're picking up the bill, right? Oh, that's all the more reason you should enjoy it. Exactly. Plus, Jason McIntyre Monday's headlines today. Two comedians I bring on the show, David Spaden, Bill Burr, and he's a football fan. He's a Patriot fan.
Starting point is 01:31:54 He's got two things right now. F is for family, third year on Netflix. That's good money over there. Yes, sir. It's excellent money. Yes, it is. A lot of money. Jesus, what are you trying to do?
Starting point is 01:32:04 You're trying to get me some gold digger to go after me? Here we go. Let's relax it. But if you looked at the hours with animation, it's probably like unloading trucks at a warehouse. Because you do a lot of time with that. Yes. Yes, you do. And then you also on the frontrunner, which starring you and Hugh Jackman, you're a comedian who can act, which is amazing, because I think acting's hard, and you act.
Starting point is 01:32:24 Are you a good actor? of comedians. Robin Williams won an Oscar, Eddie Murphy. I mean, there's a lot of... Martin Lawrence. It's a lot of good comedian actors. I got like eight lines in a movie, dude. You're acting like I'm doing some Daniel Day Lewis stuff. My left foot, the piano.
Starting point is 01:32:39 Yeah, no, dude. I just... What kind of actor are you? I'll tell you the kind of actor. I am. I play a reporter from the Miami Harold in the frontrunner. Who broke the story? Yes, who broke the story. On Gary Hart. One of the guys. I was part of the guys, but I still have my Boston an accent. So that's the kind of actor
Starting point is 01:32:57 I am. Were you a snarky? Before you start throwing some awards at me. Were you a snarky reporter and a tough do you remember your line? No, no. I don't remember the lines. I just remember we, at one point we chased Hugh's character down an alley
Starting point is 01:33:13 and he's annoyed at us. So when he turned around his character was upset and it went he turned into Wolverine for half a second. And it so startled me to actually drop my little notebook reporter thing and all these actors at the premiere were going, dude, I love that choice you made to drop the little notebook. I was like, no, that was real. He actually legit scared me. So for the first time in my
Starting point is 01:33:34 career, I've never done this, I believe I should come on and kind of be like a judge and a jury. I got a crazy DA. I got a crazy, you know, defense attorney. I have the jury and people watching. And my job is to be common sense, no BS, don't root for anybody. So you're a Patriot fan. It's a great life. 18 years of just winning. Well, I mean, the last, yeah, that's That's been great. Great. The first, you know, 30-something years of it was a little rough. Steve Grogan, years, not great.
Starting point is 01:34:01 So what is it like? Let's ask, what is it like to be on an 18-year run? Alabama fan's been on a 10-year run. You've been on almost double that. What is it like to be a fan of a New England Patriots? How is your life, do you think, different from an Eagle fan, a Titan fan? Oh, yeah, it's just been a ridiculous. I, like, 10 years ago was like already thinking, this isn't going to last forever.
Starting point is 01:34:24 let's just take this in, how much longer, just all Boston teams, how long can this thing go? And it just keeps going, just won another World Series. And so fans in other cities are like, aren't you sick of it? Aren't you getting bored? It's like, no, why would you get bored of that? As many as possible. And I'm just trying to enjoy them, knowing that I think it's more specifically the Patriots,
Starting point is 01:34:48 where it's like Belichick is pushing 70. Brady's like 41, going to be 42. So, I mean, how much longer are they going to be around? So I'm just, you know, and I remember watching the dolphins, you know, after Dan Marino retired. They're still waiting for their next Marino. It's very rare that you go from a Brett Fav to an Aaron Rogers. Do you like Belichick or Brady more? Oh, good.
Starting point is 01:35:10 That's like choosing between your mom or your dad. Well, you got to make a choice. Do I? Why? Do I like, no, I think they're equally the best at their position. And what I love about Belichick is no matter what quarterback you got in there, he would just design an offense around this guy's strengths. You know, if he couldn't throw the ball more than 20 yards,
Starting point is 01:35:31 he would come up with some sort of scheme that would give everybody a chance to win. And the fact that he's been able to do it this long with all, you know, free agencies, how you lose. Like all the people that we lost this year, we lost a running back, two wide receivers, a cornerback and our left tackle. And this is the deepest into the season that I can remember in recent history where we're still trying to figure out who we are. Exactly.
Starting point is 01:35:53 Like that game we lost to the Titans, that would happen in a September, not in November, so I'm a little concerned about it. No, the officials robbed us. They robbed us. For four straight quarters? We got hosed by the officials in that game. No, there's no question.
Starting point is 01:36:07 That game was not on us. That was on Goodell and the officials. Oh, okay. All right. I don't know if I agree with that. I'm becoming a complete meatball. No, I don't, you're going to go to games and you celebrate, and I don't get to be that.
Starting point is 01:36:22 And I kind of feel like at the end of it... No, I don't, because this whole run has happened since I left Boston. I was in New York at the height of the curse of the babe, and I got to see the Red Sox in 2004 beat the Yankees. So that was great. But other than that, I've been out of town. I've just been behind sports enemy lines for like since, I don't know, 95 or 96.
Starting point is 01:36:43 So I haven't, didn't live in Boston throughout this whole crazy run. Why do you think Boston cares more about sports? sports. I mean, there's very few places in the world where the hockey team's big, the baseball team. I can make an argument, Celtics, Patriots, Bruins, and Red Sox fans, you can make a very strong argument. They're all top three passion. You grew up in Boston. Is it the weather? You're sitting watching TV all the time? What is it? No, there are others. Pittsburgh is ridiculous fans, Detroit, as far as Red Wing fans, like, there's a lot of, like, when you truly go to a sports town, Philly's got great fans. I mean, they're, they, they, they, they, they, they,
Starting point is 01:37:19 They're nuts, but I mean, they passionately follow their teams. So I think a lot of those teams in the East Coast and everything. I think there's, I think in the winter for seven months you sit inside and watch TV and in Los Angeles, somebody told me you didn't even like the Chiefs Rams offensive showcase. I hated that. Why? Because it was like watching two people playing like Madden football with real people. Like I like defense.
Starting point is 01:37:43 Like last year's Super Bowl was one of the worst games I ever saw. The fact that a defense got a, there's. defensive players have a championship ring after that performance on either side where there was like, what, two punts the whole game? One. Yeah, okay. So now the people on the Eagles defense can then walk up to Jack Lambert and be like, yeah, man, I was on a Super Bowl defense too. Like, come on. Right.
Starting point is 01:38:05 Yeah, I think what happened was the NFL, they reach maximum density on sports fans that like sports. And now they're trying to get the casual fan, and that's offense. So they've just completely made it almost borderline illegal to cover a receiver. past five yards. Yes, they have. Yeah, I mean, Dan Marino would probably throw for 6,500 yards today. Elway and all of those guys. No, it's a different league. Yeah, it's, so that's why I hate it when they're like, I've never seen anything like this. That wrestling announcer? Yeah. I hope you realize what you just saw, like freaking out. It's just like, dude, yeah, I realize what I'm seeing here. You're not allowed, like, where are the Ronnie Lutz? Like, where are, where are those guys?
Starting point is 01:38:42 Oh, he doesn't exist. LT. They're not allowed to. So I missed that. I miss the, you know, the doomsday, the steel curtain, the sack exchange, all these great nickname defense to shut down the bears. Was it the 46 defense? I missed those. One of my favorite games of all time, if not my favorite game, would be when Damarino and the Dolphins on Monday Night Football
Starting point is 01:39:02 beat the 85 Bears. Yes. Was one of the great, like, high-powered offense against this unbelievable defense. And that was what was lacking in that Chiefs-Rams game, where it was just... There was no defense. Yeah, it's kind of like the NHL with those stretch passes.
Starting point is 01:39:17 Well, your neck hurts as you go to the game. You're watching. I kind of miss. Fighting. Yes. Pulling, tugging. I love it. I have a theory on this with comedy and sports.
Starting point is 01:39:27 All right. Is that if you look at the history of warm weather teams in the NFL, Arizona, San Diego Chargers, L.A. Rams, Houston, Texans, Miami Dolphins. They underachieving the playoffs. And I believe comedy is the same way. I think it's easier to be funny and lousy weather. Seinfeld calls it the comedy jet stream. Seattle, Minneapolis, Boston, New York. Nobody's funny in Phoenix.
Starting point is 01:39:49 Nobody. What are you talking about? David Spade is from Phoenix. Only funny guy ever from Phoenix. That's the whole. Nice recovery. The whole world. I only have two comics on this show.
Starting point is 01:39:57 Bill Byr and David Spay. Nobody fun in Phoenix. But half your comedians you put on this show are from that state. No. I banned them. Banned all. You know what you did? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:40:06 You know something. Once I saw the whole Baker-Mayfield thing. Oh, what? Once you get your opinion, you're like crazy with it. You just won't back down. You had a pro athlete sitting here. Right here. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:40:16 Got right. And you're still, your gym class Jerry over here arguing with the guy like you got drafted, too. It was ridiculous. Come on. And by the way, how great is it to see excited Cleveland Brown fans? It's great. It is great. Well, stop being the Grinch.
Starting point is 01:40:30 Just give it up and just say the guy, you know, he's doing the job. You want me to be a soft, you know, one of those Twitter, tough guys. When guys come and sit on the couch, I go right after him. Don't you respect me for that? No, I don't. Your big, dumb desk hide behind your microphone. I respect you for keeping it real, Colin. Yeah, I kept you.
Starting point is 01:40:47 You can call somebody out and then have him in front of you. That's punk. No, but then you can actually just admit that you're wrong when the guy's delivering, because now he's delivering, he's still trash. Well, yeah, he's not admitting that he's wrong. That's what I'm saying. Guy had three picks last week. The fact that he's still standing, and he plays on the Browns.
Starting point is 01:41:03 Like, one of the worst things you can be is the first quarterback drafted in the NFL. Yeah, back in the day, you were going to the Lions, you were going to the Browns, you were going to the Bears, and nobody was going to block, and everyone was going to say you sucked and you were robust and you spent, like three years in the NFL on your back. That's a good point. I like being... Look at that. See that?
Starting point is 01:41:22 I like being a little... I like being the tough guy. You warm down? I kind of like that. That tough guy with the... Microphone. With the keyboard. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:41:28 The gigantic desk. F is for family on Netflix. The frontrunner starring Hugh Jacksman. That's about Senator Gary Hart Hart and the 88 presidential election. What he got caught and messing around with something, Donna Rice. And that was the first time mainstream media went into a politician's private life,
Starting point is 01:41:47 which I didn't realize that. That was what was fascinating. Then I also remember that scandal lasting like six weeks, and it was a week. It was like he got caught and he tried to turn it around. They started hanging outside his house, his ruining his family life. A week later, he was like, forget it.
Starting point is 01:42:04 And what's amazing about that is like, what is it? Four years later, Bill Clinton runs, who just has a litany of those scandals. He's just like, what, I banged them all. Still want to be president. And he did it. And I always pictured Carrie Hart sitting there like, you could do that? I didn't know you could do that.
Starting point is 01:42:22 I was on a dock with a girl. One little picture. I'm out. Yeah, and that was it. So Vera Farminga, Hugh Jackman. It's an incredible cast. Jason Reitman directed it. It's one of the coolest, just stories, movies, anything that I've been in.
Starting point is 01:42:35 And the influence that that had on politics because, you know, because of that movie, it started like this dialogue. And there's a lot of really qualified people that would, make a possibly great presidential candidate that no longer run because they don't want to put their family through it. Yep. Yeah. So then you've got to get those psycho-driven people who whack-oes.
Starting point is 01:42:56 Yeah, they care about the Oval Office more than their kids. Yeah. And here we sit. I don't want to go into detail, but I think I know what you're in a many. Bill Burr, F is for family, the front arm. By the way, it was great to be a fan. Yeah. We are going to win this weekend.
Starting point is 01:43:13 I love our team. Dolphins always plays tough. I know. It's going to be. You picked the wrong week. I know, I did. I actually think Miami, I think it's a coin flip. I'm hoping for a Kansas City loss at some point because I'm not looking forward to trying to beat them again.
Starting point is 01:43:28 Me too. Going into Kansas City. Having said that, if we don't reach there, like I'm not like a jerk. Like I would root for Kansas City. Oh, I wouldn't. Why? Because I'm a fan of, I'm a fan of New England, Bill. Couldn't root for anybody.
Starting point is 01:43:41 All right. I see how you get the lines to light up. Bill Burr, let's hear it for him. All right, thank you very much. Also, a helicopter pilot. Didn't want to get into it. F is for family, the frontrunner starring Hugh Jackman, and Bill Burr. Great seeing you.
Starting point is 01:43:55 All right, cool. Work less, have fun. You work hard. You're a hard worker. All right. Go out there. Life advice. Go to Captiva Island.
Starting point is 01:44:03 Have some fun. You work very, very hard. All right, thank you, sir. You bet. Joy Taylor, with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 01:44:13 Was I sitting there? too far down. I kept looking at me like my shoulders are coming up into my head. No, I think you look great. It's different than the couch. We used to have a couch there and then everyone was kind of leaning forward. David Spade said we got it from the uncomfortable store, so we got rid of it. Yeah, it's, oh, I like the
Starting point is 01:44:27 couch. That's a bit. All right, when we think of NBA front office drama, the Knicks are usually the ones that come to mine, but head coach David Fisdale is looking to attract star talent to New York this off season and he thinks it needs to start with him. Fisdale told the New York Post that he wants to take a step
Starting point is 01:44:43 by step approach to turning the Knicks around for the future. He said it's much more about the perception of the organization. We change the perception of how we operate and treat each other and that's what's important. That's the first step in getting people to come to New York. We have something that free agents will like. I think everybody in the league likes David Fisdale. I don't think there's ever been a coach more liked by players.
Starting point is 01:45:02 He is very liked by players. Incredible. He's got a Mike Tomlin quality at the microphone. You want to just go and give him a big hug. He's like a player's guy. He's a player's guy for sure. He defends his players. very vehemently. I do think that he forgot that James Dolan owns the Knicks,
Starting point is 01:45:19 though. Because that's the main problem with going to the Knicks is that James Dolan owns the Knicks. I appreciate that he's trying to do this, though, because he's right, that is the issue with free agents. Because if you're a free agent,
Starting point is 01:45:34 why wouldn't you want to go to the Knicks, in theory? Oh, God, you'd be great to start town. Yeah, you get to play at the garden. It's a huge sports town. made for stars. I mean, what's bigger than New York City? Broadway stars, actors.
Starting point is 01:45:48 No, I mean, it's unfortunate, because I've said this before, Joey. I contend New York's a basketball town, not a baseball town, but the baseball's been really well-managed mostly by the Yankees and well-owned. The Mets are a mess now. But if the minute,
Starting point is 01:46:04 the Mets are bad, nobody goes to the games. The NICs have been dysfunctional for 20 years. You can't get a ticket. Right, because the basketball history in New York It's incredible. High school college pro. But it would be nice to see them turning around. I don't know how that happens with him there.
Starting point is 01:46:18 So it's time now for the Real Deal. Brought to you by Carl's Jr. and Hardies. And this weekend's matchup between the Chiefs and the Ravens is the real deal. Meetings between the number one scoring offense and the number one scoring defense doesn't often happen. But they tend to favor offensive powerhouses when they do. Bill Burr just said he likes some defense. Well, the top scoring team has won four of the five games against the top defense.
Starting point is 01:46:42 is played after week 10 since 2006. Interesting. So we're talking about some late in the season games. In every case, the number one offense has scored at least 27 points, including in the one game that it lost. There's some really sneaky good games this weekend, like the Dolphins Patriots. And I think we know the Rams Bears will be good. The Cowboys Eagles will be good.
Starting point is 01:47:03 I think Carolina Cleveland's going to be fascinating. Kansas City, Baltimore is really, really good. Yeah. Good games this weekend. And finally, almost every. one agrees that Patrick Mahomes is having an MVP like season, except for you because you think it's just a shrugging emotion. Are you back on board or are you on board, Alisa? I'm on board with Patrick. I do think he has a great play designer and unbelievable offensive pieces.
Starting point is 01:47:28 I just think we're forgetting that this has been a convergence of the perfect storm for Patrick. Take Tyreek Hill. Now he has no Kareem Hunt. If Tyree Kill went down this weekend, now you have a normal NFL offense. It's not mostly this talented. Well, the Saints play the Bucks this weekend, so, I mean, we're assuming that they're going to win that game. Yeah. But this game is very interesting for the MVP race if it's coming down to the two of
Starting point is 01:47:54 them. But anyway, everyone thinks he's having an MVP season except for his receiver, Garrick Dieter, who got in a playful beef with Mahomes over a missed throw. Mahomes overthrew him. And so now they have a little public beef going on. Oh, boy. I feel like if you're an MVP candidate in this league that you should be able to hit a wide open receiver running on the field I told him when he comes in for Tyree he gets like report in like he can't eat it's a little different speed man
Starting point is 01:48:19 who had the hair first that's another thing too I think he stole the haircut he says he got it first I've had the hair since 2012 don't tell him but he's already going to the same barber as me right after me pat just seems that run with the joke that I've been going to his barber but I actually went to the barber first they have an ongoing beef with each other so I mean hopefully it doesn't aggressing anything physical, but you never know with that guy. Yeah. There's a lot of controversy. That is a great haircut. It is a strong haircut. So they got a little Kuzma-Lonzo thing
Starting point is 01:48:49 going on there. Much friendlier. It hasn't quite escalated into a track. Yeah, a disc track. Yeah, you're good with it, though? I'm good with it. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd-Lie News.
Starting point is 01:49:05 One of the tough things when you're a local reporter, especially like a baseball reporter, you travel with a team. It's hard to be critical, especially if you're in a small town, you travel with a team, you're at practice every day. It's easier for me. I'm sitting out here. I can talk about anybody. I don't cover a specific team. But when you're a local reporter, it is tougher. Got to give credit to Pete Doherty, who covers the Packers for the Green Bay Press Gazette. That's a small town and a local paper. And he went out yesterday and wrote, the Packers job's good. Cleveland's a better job. He said, number one, personnel, Cleveland's got better personnel.
Starting point is 01:49:37 Number two, Browns are swimming in salary cap space. What he didn't mention, which I think needs to be mentioned, is Aaron Rogers is now making $33 million a year, which is going to limit some of their elements going forward. So he also brings up a very interesting point. I did not think of it in these terms, but again, I like that a local reporter would go here. I'm just going to read this to you. He said, Aaron Rogers, he goes, the standard line is the NFL, is that all 32 jobs are great.
Starting point is 01:50:06 There's only 32 available, but some rate higher than others. And he goes, Aaron Rogers is great, but it cuts both ways. He said, Aaron Rogers has had two sustained stretches of mediocrity in the last four years. He said there was a 19 game run in 15 and 16 when they were 8 and 11. He goes, and his passer rating was 88. He goes, the other has been this 4, 7, and 1 stretch where his passer rating's under 100, which got Mike McCarthy fired. So credit to Pete Doherty, I don't know him,
Starting point is 01:50:37 but a local guy being honest that we think of Cleveland as dysfunctional, but when you look at the personnel, when you look at the cap space and you look at Baker Mayfield not making a ton of money for the next two to three years, I keep saying this. I'm not sure how great the Packers job is. I think it comes with absolute high expectations, and because of Aaron's salary, limitations on personnel, free agency, or resigning draft picks.
Starting point is 01:51:07 Coming up next, Monday's headlines today. One of my favorite segments, best for last, in L.A. Coming up next. Sunday, it's a Fox NFL doubleheader starting with Jew Brees and High Powered Saints, taking on the Buccaneers. Then it's America's Game of the Week. It's Carson Wentz and the Eagles battle, Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys in a huge NFCES showdown. It's all on Fox and the Fox Sports app.
Starting point is 01:51:31 Check your local listing. By the way, Panthers Browns is quietly fascinating. Jason McIntyre, the founder of the biglead.com. By the way, who do you like in that Browns, Carolina game? Give me Baker. I love Baker in this spot. I like him, an underdog at home. Are you feeling Cam Newton now, huh? Well, I've always been critical at Cam.
Starting point is 01:51:54 I call him roller coaster cam. And I think the less noise I get, I think Big Ben is talented enough to be noisy, but I think it's even hurt Big Ben's career. You know, we hear a lot of chatter now. And there's some talk about Ron Rivera being in trouble in Carolina. New ownership. You know what that means, right? New ownership.
Starting point is 01:52:12 But the owner was... I got a guy. Yeah. Be careful. The guy that owns Carolina, Dave Tapper, I think his name is. He's from Pittsburgh. So you would think he'd understand the continuity's big. It is.
Starting point is 01:52:24 It is. Fire coaches. Yes. All right, we call it Monday's headlines today. Packers. the Falcons in the first game since firing McCarthy. What's the headline? You've been bombing the Packers all week.
Starting point is 01:52:37 It's been fun. I enjoy watching it. But I believe they're in trouble this weekend, right? Two offensive linemen down, three defensive backs. They don't look like they want to play. And I think Monday's headline's going to be, please come back a plea to Mike McCarthy. Hey, man, maybe we fired you a little too soon.
Starting point is 01:52:55 We should have let this play out. This is not a defense of Mike McCarthy. But Colin, how attractive? is this job. You've got a 35-year-old quarterback. Making 33 million a year. Does a leopard change his spots? Is all of a sudden some coach going to come in and Aaron Rogers is going to change everything he does? I think, you know, you said just 10 minutes ago that the Brown's job was more attractive than the Packers. I would even argue the Jets job. Jets don't have a lot of talent. But when you've got a 21-year-old quarterback who you can mold into something, by the way. I'm telling you that that's an
Starting point is 01:53:25 attractive job. Jets and the Browns have a ton of cap space. What are the Packers? have? Aaron Rogers? The one thing I do like they have, Aaron Jones, the running back? He's a nice player. Yeah, I mean, that's, that is, like, if I, if I took over the Packers, I'd get another running back. I would make Aaron a bit more of a pocket thrower.
Starting point is 01:53:45 I draft, I do what. But, Colin, you can't just say Aaron, we want to keep you in the pocket. Like, he's like, man, I'm one of the best quarterbacks ever. I'm kind of going to do my thing. He's 35. If you were like 28 and I'd never want anything, this guys won MVP awards. He's won a Super Bowl. It's going to be a tough job.
Starting point is 01:54:01 That's a tough sell. Bears host the Rams in the Battle of First Place teams. Monday's headline today. This is the best game of the weekend, I believe. Now, you've been a little ambivalent about the Rams this week. I hope that's the right word choice. I don't buy their defense. Yeah, well, you know, December, the weather changes, the games are tighter. I think Monday's headline will be Rams get naggy headache.
Starting point is 01:54:26 You like that nagging headache? I like that, yeah. Kind of funny. I'm working on some stand-up material here. This is a situation for the Rams. This is the best defense I faced this year. And, yeah, without question. And you watched closely last week, Jared Goff, didn't look sharp against a lion.
Starting point is 01:54:41 At all. Someone joked to me that his name was Jared off last week because he was off on throws. Back to back. He really struggled with accuracy last week. And now he's got to face Khalil Mack, a nasty defensive front seven. And I actually think the Rams are going to get beat up in the front seven. I think they'll be able to run the ball. Mitch Trubisky back, right?
Starting point is 01:55:01 He leads quarterback 7.1 yards per carry. That's more than Lamar Jackson, Cam Newton. Trubisky is an added dimension. I think the Bears are legitimately. They could get to the Super Bowl. Would you agree with that? No. No, but I will say.
Starting point is 01:55:17 Joy, you got my back on this, right? Bears Super Bowl? No. I will say this. Not a lot of love here. No, I mean, I think they're a good team. I think they're getting better. I just don't think it's this year.
Starting point is 01:55:26 I think the Rams have peaked, and I also think the way to beat the Rams is what Chicago and Dallas do, which is some ball control, run it, quarterback that's mobile. All right, Cowboys host, the Eagles, America's Game of the Week. Monday's headline today. It's funny, Cowboys fans loved me here last week. I said they are Super Bowl contenders. I think you were kind of on board. However, it's a week-to-week league, Colin.
Starting point is 01:55:49 You know, the Cowboys are hot. Everybody's talking them up. Monday's headline will be Cowboys went their pants. I think this is a perfect letdown spot for Dallas, right? Philly has the revenge factor. We know that they're not out of the playoff mix, and Dallas is feeling itself at this point. All anybody's talking about is,
Starting point is 01:56:09 oh, Cooper and Zeke and Layton Vanderresh. I mean, there's a lot of positive feelings around the Cowboys. And Colin, these guys are human, okay? They're young 20-year-olds who are going to pick up the paper, turn on the TV, and everybody's saying great things about them. Let's not forget this is an Eagles team that came into the season with Super Bowl expectations. I don't think they're done,
Starting point is 01:56:29 and I think they can cover and pull off the upset in Dallas Sunday. Here's the one thing. Dak leads the NFL in getting sacked. And you know it's not about the O-line because Zeke has had an incredible month. It's not an O-line issue. The O-line is fine. It is a DAC lacking pocket awareness issue in Philadelphia. Bennett, Fletcher Cox, has real pass rush.
Starting point is 01:56:51 Can we agree, though, you want a bit overboard comparing Dak to Tim Tebow. I mean, come on. He's a way better, Tim Tebow. I mean, like, I don't know. That doesn't feel nice. I mean, Tim Tebow was unable to pass the football, like 48% completions. Dack was, I believe, 68% two years ago. Dac is better.
Starting point is 01:57:08 He's better, yeah, no doubt. Okay, Raiders host the Steelers. Monday's headline today. I've been fading John Gruden gambling all season. Very profitable. However, fun fact, Ben Rothesberger's never won in Oakland. Oh, and 3. This is a Pittsburgh team.
Starting point is 01:57:24 No James Connor this weekend. I believe the headline Monday will be. Oh, my lord. Raiders forget to tank beat Steelers. I know they're double-digit underdogs. Ten and a half is what they're getting. But this is a spot where Pittsburgh, guess who they play next week, Colin? Baltimore.
Starting point is 01:57:42 New England Patriots. The rematch of the huge game last year. I just feel like your focus is not going to be on an afterthought of a Raiders team. So this is in Oakland. Yes. You know what? This is it. Now, who did the Steelers just play?
Starting point is 01:57:57 So they just lost to the Chargers. They choked away a big. So a standalone TV game, and then another standalone TV game, and in the middle, a huge favorite out west. There's a perfect spot to fade Pittsburgh. Now, I do believe the Connor injury is significant, and without him, I don't know what their running game is, down to the third string back. But Oakland has been feisty. Last three weeks, Derek Carr, six TDs, no interceptions. Wow.
Starting point is 01:58:21 Look at Big Ben. Big Ben struggling a bit. I can't get over that Denver loss. That costs me so much money, but I digress. I just think the Raiders show up in Oakland and this is Jets fans out there this is huge. If the Raiders pull this off the Jets move up to the number two pick in the draft.
Starting point is 01:58:37 Oh, they do. Yeah, and I believe the 49ers also are a live dog this weekend against Denver. Denver's beat up. So Jets fans just lose to Buffalo. There's a tiny chance Monday. Jets will have the number one pick in the draft. So you're saying the Steelers are going to lose four in a row
Starting point is 01:58:51 because I'm assuming that you're saying they're going to lose to the Patriots. I think it is. Listen, this is Joy, do you like what you see from the I mean, I didn't love last week, no, but they were in the game. They were. It was like bad situational football. No Melvin Gordon.
Starting point is 01:59:06 I'll tell you, it is one of those weird sandwich games. It is. And the Steelers always play to the level of their competition. Always. I mean, if you look at what's happened, they're going to lose four games in a row. By the way, if the Jets got the number one pick, they're not going to take Dwayne Haskins to the quarterback. No, no, they're trading down. The Giants or somebody who needs a quarterback.
Starting point is 01:59:28 We'll say, hey, we'll give you two number one picks. What did the Rams give up to get golf? Didn't they have to trade up? Or it was the Browns with Wentz, right? They could have drafted Wentz. So the Jets can get a haul. I mean, I'm all for losing this late in the season. I mean, Oakland, keep an eye on that game.
Starting point is 01:59:44 That'll be fun Sunday afternoon. There is a report. LeBron wants Mello to join the Lakers. Monday's headline today. So we were hanging out last night. We joked about this a little bit. Listen. Carmel, Anthony.
Starting point is 01:59:58 Really? He's had opportunities to pick up Mello. Monday's headline will be, Colin. The King has enough gestures. No need for Carmelo Anthony. I mean, come on. Are you going to add him to that locker room? This is one of the silliest reports I've seen. One of our guys on the big lead floated a great theory.
Starting point is 02:00:15 LeBron is doing his buddy, Carmello, a solid, saying, hey, man, oh, we'll look at Carmelo, and then other teams will say, hey, wait, if LeBron's thinking about him, maybe we should kick the tires on me. That's a really good theory. I think he's doing his buddy of favor and talking him up. But there's no way LeBron wants Carmelo. By the way, Chris Broussard, I thought, brought up a really interesting point. If you take out, I mean, even if, you know, you go play at the Y,
Starting point is 02:00:40 and you join a bunch of guys. It takes you two or three games to figure out guys' tendencies. If you take out the Lakers' 0-and-3 start, they're on pace to win 58 games. Hey, hey, rockets, how are they do? They lost by 30 last night. To the Utah Jazz. That team is a mess. I don't want to say anything by that.
Starting point is 02:00:58 Chris Paul Contra. Oh, my God. He's ever the worst season of his career. By the way, John Wall was... Oh, gosh, don't talk about it. Come on... Punched you back on... I mean, John Wall's coming after me on social media.
Starting point is 02:01:08 It's been a rough go, man. Baker Mayfield, remember after the show? He blocked me on Twitter. Why? Why? He just didn't like what I had to say after one game this season. Is Baker blocked me?
Starting point is 02:01:21 I don't think Baker's blocked me. You know what comes with the territory. You and Aaron Rogers are buddies, right? I'm sure. Yeah. You do talk to some guys, though. You and Kevin Duran. I talk to some athletes, you know, a couple of guys work out of my gym and whatever.
Starting point is 02:01:33 It's not a big deal. But do you think John Wall's a top seven point guard in the NBA right now? Steph's number one. There you go. Joy, is John Wall top seven? Kyrie Irving. Let's name him. Russ Westbrook.
Starting point is 02:01:46 Okay, just to say it. Curry. Curry. Westbrook. Kyrie. Kyrie. I take Chris Paul over him. Kemble Walker's having an incredible season.
Starting point is 02:01:55 Russell Westbro. He said what? Ben Simmons. Damian Lillard? Damian Lillard, for sure. I have John Wall 8th. I'm not hammering him, but he just got a supermax contract. He didn't really go crazy.
Starting point is 02:02:08 He just said L.O.L. I mean, okay, that's fair. But the mere fact that he did that now has all these DC died coming after me. I always say I always have John Wall about seventh. Yeah. Six or seventh. And he's getting a Supermax deal. John Wall's fine, not at $47 million in two years.
Starting point is 02:02:23 Lakers beat the Spurs tonight. I believe they play tonight. They will move up to fourth in the west. I'm telling you're making a move on second. You better get the playoff tickets in line, coward. So we can be front row like you were with that one game where LeBron was talking to you in the front row. Coming up Monday, Winston Moss, the former Packer assistant who had an innocuous tweet, and the Packers ran him out of town.
