Starting point is 00:02:44 I'll be dealing cards at the Mirage in five hours. I've got my blackjack shirt on. Joy Taylor is joining me. How are you today, Joy? You're into this black shirt today. I don't. Skip Baylinson. Shannon. Skip Bayliss, he wears a lot of those. He looks like dynamic. It's a Johnny Cash look.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Yeah, I mean, I look at me. I don't know. Almost out of place. I got to start with this. Everybody yesterday, and I did this in regard to the Raiders. Because I come in every morning, I have a bunch of shirts I can wear. I chose this to talk about the Raiders. Everybody thinks the Raiders lost in the Khalil Mack story goes to the Bears, right? Everybody's banging on the Raiders. And I was banging on the Raiders yesterday. And I thought about it. I got to pay respect. to the Raiders with my black shirt today. And the reason I'm doing that, because they were not the real loser in the Khalil Mack deal. The real loser was Aaron Rogers. I want you to think about this. I want you to think about this. If you're the Green Bay Packers, why didn't you get Khalil
Starting point is 00:03:44 Mac? A, you're the only team in the NFL with two first round picks next year. Have them. You're it. Nobody else has them. quick. You get two firsts. We get the next Lawrence Taylor. B. You knew rival bears in your division. You play them twice a year. We're going after Khalil Mack. It had been reported before the deal. Aaron Rogers has had two collarbone surgeries. Want to face him minimum 10 times next five years? That Viking pass rush and Khalil Mack, the next Lawrence Taylor? Really? Want Aaron to see that? Think he's going to get to Aaron a couple times? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Plays him 10 times in five years. You want to face the next Lawrence Taylor? C. Green Bay's defense right now is young and mostly cheap. You've got room to spend big money
Starting point is 00:04:45 on a Khalil Mack. D. Reggie McKenzie is a former Packer executive. He's the current Raiders GM. You had a built-in emotional psychological advantage. You had a guy that respects and likes the Packers in the building, and he didn't use it.
Starting point is 00:05:06 E, we've got history here, folks. Green Bay is not where free agent stars go. They don't go to Green Bay, so when you can get them in a trade, you get him in a trade. F. Aaron Rogers never loses in the playoffs when you give him help defensively. When Green Bay gives up fewer than 23 points in the playoffs, Aaron Rogers has never lost.
Starting point is 00:05:36 But here's what Green Bay has given up in his losses in the playoffs. 51 points, 37 points, 45 points, 28 points, 26 points, 44 points. Green Bay is 7 and 1, if you can just hold people to a reasonable number, 23. You've got good interior defensive lineman. You drafted corners. Next year, the one thing in the first round you're going to draft? You were going to draft a defensive end, a pass rusher. I said this yesterday.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Once again, people in Green Bay, this organization is not comfortable with risk. But Colin, but Colin, we signed Aaron Rogers to an extension. That's not risk. That's duh. That's like telling my kids, hey, don't walk out in front of traffic. That's like, hey, I didn't jump out of a plane without a parachute. Of course you re-sign Aaron Rogers. That's not courage.
Starting point is 00:06:35 That's like you're idiots if you don't do that. Khalil Mack, well, it takes a little courage. You got to give up stuff to get stuff. I mean, Green Bay, you got a guy off of collarbone surgery. You knew your rival was going after him. I mean, you do realize the Patriots traded Garoppolo to the other conference. They don't want to face him. You knew the rival bears were going after him, and they already have a good defensive front.
Starting point is 00:07:02 You already got Minnesota's defense. Now you got Chicago's defensive front. And you had two first-round picks. And you know if you give Aaron a little defensive help, he never loses in the playoffs. The one time you gave him a defense, he won you a Super Bowl. I mean, come on. I don't want to hear that signing Aaron Rogers took guts. That's the biggest, duh, in professional sports.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Courage would have been, we're going to give up two first round picks to get Colee O'Mac. You had it. You're not a free agent destination, and you blew it. Let me shift to this. Hard Knocks, final edition was on last night. I'm a parent. I've got kids, and I've got stepkids.
Starting point is 00:07:46 and here's the way it works. Everybody watching me that's a parent, every parent listening to me knows what I'm about to say is true. As a dad, sometimes, I'll talk to my wife. And you have these conversations. You know, do you think he's ready to do this by himself?
Starting point is 00:08:12 Is she ready to do it by himself? And your kids are all different. Some are more mature, some are less mature. Some can handle being out by themselves. Some can't. And it really happens a lot with driving when you're young. Is she ready for a driver's license or one of those like permits where the parents are in the car? And if you really trust your kid and you think they're mature and they can handle it,
Starting point is 00:08:42 you just get them a driver's license and you don't have to be in the car and you just let them go. They're going to drive to another state. And you trust them. That's a great, great feeling as a parent. And it shows you the respect for the kid. But if you just get them a learner's permit, honey, we'll let you drive. But dad and I'll be in the car as we go to the grocery store.
Starting point is 00:09:05 You love them. You think they're capable, but you don't really trust them yet. Maturity. So Baker Mayfield on Hard Knocks, Last night got a learner's permit. Watch this with Hugh Jackson. Watch. I've made a decision to make Baker the backup point.
Starting point is 00:09:28 I just wanted to make sure I want you guys to hear it from me. I said all the stuff that flies out there and all that. Okay, thank you. I need to speak to you for a second. You're a very talented young man. Keep grinding. Okay? And I'm going to keep creating situations for you to even do more.
Starting point is 00:09:42 I hope you understand the opportunity that's in front of you right now, but you've earned it. I'm not just giving it to you. You've earned it. Okay? Appreciate it for you. All right, buddy. The number one pick has earned the backup quarterback role.
Starting point is 00:10:00 What the Brown's coaches are saying is, we think you're talented, you're a really good kid, but right now we're going to bring you along kind of slowly here. Philadelphia with Carson Wentz and the Jets was Sam Darnold. Both when Wentz went to Philadelphia, they already had a starter, Sam Bradford. They had a starter. They were going to bring Wents along slowly.
Starting point is 00:10:29 When the Jets had Sam Darnold fall to them at number three, Josh McCown was very good last year. Go look at his stats week 1 through 14. They brought in Teddy Bridgewater in March. They had a starter. But Wence and. Darnold were so impressive that the coaches slash parents said, we're going to trade the quarterback. We're going to trade Sam Bradford.
Starting point is 00:10:52 We're going to trade Teddy Bridgewater. It's your car. Now, we know you're not going to be the best driver on the road. We know you're not going to be a perfect driver. But here's the keys. We'll see you tomorrow. Cleveland, even with just Tyrod Taylor, you have. earned your right to a learner's permit.
Starting point is 00:11:19 But mom and dad will be in the car. Let's go to the grocery store. That's what happened yesterday. Because this is why Baker was never a number one pick. He'll work in the NFL. He'll be fine. He'll win games. That's not it.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Number one picks. Carson Wentz came into Philly. And Sam Darnold came into the Jets. And they are so impressive. Number one quarterbacks, Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Cam. create these wow moments where you're like, whoa, whoa, we got ourselves a star. He's not refined and polished.
Starting point is 00:11:55 We don't eat Sam Bradford. We don't eat Teddy. Remember when Doug Peterson was on my show a week ago? And I asked him, in camp, when was that moment you were like, okay, we can trade Sam Bradford. We got ourselves a star. There was a moment in training camp that year that our first. year where he alluded to rush and did one of his sort of that Washington, remember the clip of the Washington Redskins last year opening day? He made that, he made that amazing scramble
Starting point is 00:12:25 where he kind of duck and spun out. Well, he did one of those type of moves in training camp his first year as a rookie and completed the ball down the field. And at that point, you're just kind of going, this kid's got something to him. He's going to be a special kid in this league, a special talents, and a mighty fine quarter. That's what a number one or number two or number three pick at quarterback should be. That they're not refined. They're not perfect. But Cam did things.
Starting point is 00:12:55 And Luck did things. And Carson went to two pick did things. And Darnold is a number three pick. They do things. And you're willing to trade veterans who at the moment are better than them. But there are just, wow. That's what parents do. That's what I've done.
Starting point is 00:13:11 My daughter, very mature kid at a very early end. Here's the keys. Here's the keys. You're not going to be the best driver on the road, but here are the keys. At this point, I love my son, but I'm not letting him ride his bike without me kind of keeping my eye on him. Where are you going? Where are we're? Here's the bike, but don't turn right there.
Starting point is 00:13:38 It's different. It's not a matter of not loving. It's not a matter of this is the way parents operate. This is the way we all operate. When we feel you are so talented, so good. You can do it on your own. Overcome mistakes. And Sam Donald's going to have 20 picks.
Starting point is 00:13:55 He's going to fumble the ball. You're going to get beat up. Same with Carson Wentz. This is why if you're going to draft the quarterback number one, you better know he's going to give you some wow. And you can give him keys to that card day one. And he is just going to burrow through it. He's just, Peyton Manning, he's going to throw picks.
Starting point is 00:14:16 He's just going to have so much talent. Cam's going to have so much talent. Luck's got to have so much talent. They just got burrow through it. That's what Cleveland did yesterday. Told Baker, he earned a learner's permit. It's like getting your kid a Ferrari and then getting a learner's permit. Like maybe you should have, you know, started him with a neon or something.
Starting point is 00:14:42 A neon. That's my first car. Was it? Yes. And I was very, I was a terrible driver. There was no reason I should have. I had a pacer GMC or AMC or something, Pacer. I think it eventually blew up at a gas station, but that was my, I wasn't in it at the time.
Starting point is 00:14:56 Coming up next, everybody's picking about the Cowboys. The Cowboys problems aren't in their own locker room. It's not Jerry Jones. The Cowboys problems are not on their roster. And it's not their owner. I'll tell you what the Cowboys' problems are, which is why I've downgraded them to a 500 team this year. That is coming up next. Doug Gottlie, Brian Cox on today. He is fantastic second hour.
Starting point is 00:15:24 Hi, everybody, it's the herd. Here's why I'm a big fan of Simply Safe home security. Simply Safe is ready for anything that gets thrown at it. If a storm takes out your power, an intruder cut your phone line, Simply Safe is ready. Say they destroy your keypad or siren. Simply Safe will still get you the help you need. Now, maybe it's overkill. But maybe you don't need to be ready for every worst-case scenario. But that's what makes Simply Safe home security system so great. It is always ready. Simply Safe could cost an arm and a leg, but it doesn't.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Instead, they only charge for what's fair 24-7 professional security monitoring is just $14.99 a month. No contracts, no hidden fees. We recommend Simplysafe to everybody we know. Check it out. Go to simplysafe.com slash herd today. SimplySafe.com slash H-E-R-D. Family assets protect both. SimplySafe.com slash H-E-R-D.
Starting point is 00:16:23 Don't be the guy in the room with a long, sloppy-looking untucked shirt on tucket.com. Code heard called perfection by GQ magazine. Untucket.com, code heard. That code gets you 20% off. Doug Gottlieb in 10 minutes or less. So I'm listening to Troy Aikman yesterday's on Dallas Radio. Everybody's picking apart in the Cowboys. Yesterday I put out my official NFL predictions.
Starting point is 00:16:41 I had the Cowboys at 9 and 7 last month. I reduced them to 8 and 8. Why I'll get to that in a second? So Troy Aikman comes out yesterday and talks about, you know, this team, no DES, no Witt, and some of the issues they're going to be presented with. I'm looking at this receiving core. Yeah, maybe it's now more of a four-wide type situation and you're not relying or, you know, the tight-in between Cole Beasley and Tavon Austin and this Michael Gallup,
Starting point is 00:17:10 who I've had a chance to watch a little bit. I like a lot of the things that he has shown. And then, of course, Alan Hurons coming in via free age one-on-one. I completely agree. But I don't think that's their biggest problem. The reason I have the Cowboys now at 500, and I like them, but there's a reason I have them at 500. It's not about who's in the building.
Starting point is 00:17:39 It's about who's out of the building. I have a basic rule predicting NFL games. If I don't have a pro-ball quarterback, and I like Dak. He's about 15th best quarterback in the league today. And I'm facing multiple Pro Bowl quarterbacks who are better than my current quarterback. I'm not going to be a dominating team. Dallas's biggest problem is the quarterbacks they face. They will face in 11 games, a quarterback that's better than DAC and seen largely as a Pro Bowl quarterback.
Starting point is 00:18:14 Carson Went twice, Russell Wilson, Cam, Matt Ryan, Breeze, Matt Stafford, Andrew Luck to Sean Watson, Alex Smith, two times. That's about 70% of the schedule. By the way, Blake Bortles, they face him too, and he's got an amazing defense, though he's not a pro bowler. So you could say 12 of the 16 games, he's up against it. Now, again, I like DAC. Much higher on DAC than everybody else.
Starting point is 00:18:37 I have, you know, middle of the pack, but I like him. I think he's a beat quarterback. He's a franchise guy. You're not going to be a dominating team facing those quarterbacks. Compare that to Tom Brady. Tom Brady faces five all year elite level quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Stafford, Luck, Rogers, cousins, Big Ben. And I would say two of those, Rogers, Ben, maybe three, Luck. You could argue on a lot of Sundays are as equal. So three of 16. That's why I like New England,
Starting point is 00:19:13 and I don't love their roster, but I like them to win the division. My Super Bowl picks this year are the Pittsburgh Steelers facing the Atlanta Falcons. Why? Because Big Ben's a Pro Bowl quarterback and he'll only face five and they got close last year and they got a chip on their shoulder.
Starting point is 00:19:31 And the Atlanta Falcons were really good last couple years. Got a little chip on their shoulder. Lost at Philly could have won and they only face six Pro Bowl quarterbacks. Dallas faces 11 and doesn't have a Pro Bowl quarterback. So we're all we're all kind of marginalized. And by the way, I thought Troy was totally. accurate. We're all kind of beating up in the Cowboys. They'll be this, they'll be this, let me this, let's be this. Here's what they
Starting point is 00:19:54 will truly be 11 of 16 weeks. Less talented at quarterback. Hard to make the playoffs when that's your reality. Not an excuse. An excuse is the dog ate your homework. A reality is somebody teabone me driving to work or school.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Like 11 of 16 games, you'll have the less talented quarterback. I don't feel you can be a playoff team. Enjoy with the news. No. No. No. news this is the herd line news speaking of the cowboys although Ezekiel Elliott didn't see a single snap during the preseason his teammates say we should expect a new and improved Zeke in 2018 take listen to Zach Martin man Zeke's been on it since we started camp I know I'm sure you guys
Starting point is 00:20:40 have seen it just the way he's running the way he's approaching every day it's just something feels different and you know I think he's he's ready for a big year you know he's always been a hard worker, but just something different about this year. He's coming each day, running hard, although he hasn't played in the preseason. I don't think there's any question that he's ready for this week. Mm-hmm. You must certainly better hope so, because there's a lot of pressure on Zieg this year. Yeah, and I think from the comments his dad said years ago, he's still young, he's still immature. I think there's going to be more stumbles by Zieg. Oh, I mean, let's hope not. At least not the sort of summals that he's been involved in.
Starting point is 00:21:24 I mean, look, Zeke last year, everybody wants to blame Dak for what happened last year. And maybe he took a small step back, but let's not forget that Sean Lee was injured a lot. And the cloud of investigation hung over the team all year long. Week to week, you never knew if Zeeke was going to be there. And then in week 10, he got suspended for six games. So there's a lot of what happened last year is Zeeke's fault. Now, you knew what you were getting. getting with Zee because it's not like there was any kind of confusion about what Zeeke's character was in the draft.
Starting point is 00:21:56 His dad acknowledged it. Right. It was very clear. But I feel like when you draft a player like that, you then have to take extra precaution to try and keep them in, just like you said, learners permit. Like sometimes you take a player because they are that talented. Zeek is that talented. But whether he's an adult or not and whether you're paying him all this money in the NFL or not, I feel like you, as an organization, you have to have that conversation with him. Like, there will be someone with you at all times. I think Des felt like this and Zeeke feels like this. Great talents, but, you know, there's going to be more problems for Zique. He's not going to have nine years of no issues.
Starting point is 00:22:32 I'm not ready to jump off into the pool of Zique is in the clear now. But it just, for the Cowboys sake, Zik has to have the kind of year where he shows a great leap in maturity and those expectations are on him. So the Giants seem to be, well, they are obviously. taking a bold move with O'Dell Beckham Jr. And during his recent radio appearance, Pat Schumer, brought up the idea of using O'Dell as a punt returner. Sickleism. Will you use Beckham in a return game?
Starting point is 00:23:02 You know, there's no reason we can't. And, you know, I think that's something that we'll just have to, we're going to have to be strategic with that. Oh, no, Pat. I can think of about $65 million worth of reasons that you don't want O'Don 20 points. You have a $55. college has an 85-man roster, so a college team should be able to have a guy that just returns punts.
Starting point is 00:23:24 With a 55-man roster, I don't think it's out of the question that you need one of your starters to be a punt-returner. Am I nuts? No, one of your starters can be a punt-returner, just not the guy that you're giving $65 billion guarantee to play wide receiver. How about Eli? She'll be returning the puns. You know, Eli doesn't have a lot of mobility, but he can probably catch. I mean, I think the Giants, you get to a point with the Giants, Sequan Barkley, but again, Sequin's going to have like 20 carries.
Starting point is 00:23:49 I think Odell's, I don't know. In 47 career games, he's returned 33 punts for 263 yards and one kickoff for 20 yards. It's not unheard of for him to be doing this, but that was pre a $90 million contract to be a wide receiver. If he gets injured returning a punt, how's that going to sit? Not well.
Starting point is 00:24:08 I feel like that goes over well. I don't know about that. I feel like you just find somebody else to do that. Finally, in an interesting twist, The Ravens, you're very high on the Ravens this year, have Lamar Jackson behind Joe Flacco on the team's depth chart ahead of their week one matchup with the bills. This comes after they decided to keep RG3 on their 53-man roster.
Starting point is 00:24:26 So Lamar's now number two. Yes. Do you think that Lamar Jackson is more game-ready than RG-3? No. I mean, this really says a lot about RG-3. It kind of feels like PR to me, which is like they got a little pushback on. You drafted him first round. He's your number three. All these other quarterbacks are starting or their twos.
Starting point is 00:24:47 If you're asking me today, Lamar RG3, who could win the game with Baltimore's talent? I'm going to go with RG3. So would I. Yeah. And I don't think that RG3 is a starter in the NFL. Not now. Or maybe even a solid backup. But I think he's more ready than Lamar Jackson.
Starting point is 00:25:05 But that's, you're probably right about that. It's not a great look to have him as the third quarterback. No, it looks like, I mean, good Lord. I mean, Cleveland picks Baker number one. and they're like, congrats, you beat out Drew Stanton. You know, that's not what you want from a number one pick. You want Carson Wentz goes to the number two pick, and you're like, hell, we'll trade Bradford. And Sam Bradford can play.
Starting point is 00:25:23 Can't stay healthy, but Sam Bradford can flat throw the football. He's a really good quarterback when he's up. Well, this better be Joe Flacko's year. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hurd-Lie News. Doug Gottlieb, after my show, Fox Sports Radio, a lot of stuff to hang, talk about today.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Let's bring him in. The Dugger. College football, NFL. So the salary caps going up. Packers have two first-round picks. Their defense is young and cheap. I wouldn't want to face Khalil Mack because it was in the news a week ago. The Bears were in it.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Like I look at Aaron Rogers and I think, of course you resign me. But the key is, if you give me a defense, I don't lose in the playoffs. I'm 8-0 or 7-0 or something. and why not go with Calil Mac well I think there's two parts the draft picks and the money I sat in your chair Thursday
Starting point is 00:26:19 because you were off commercial oh commercial shooting new commercial okay and I believe getting waxed and around the league people were laughing at the idea that the Raiders would ask
Starting point is 00:26:31 for two first round draft picks for a defensive player no one's giving them two first round draft picks and you know what somebody did you know it's the anyone is tradable if you're willing to go above and beyond what somebody's on paper value is. Right.
Starting point is 00:26:45 So it's the $90 million. And I actually, though Gruden, you know, through Reggie McKenzie under the bus and said some half-truths in his press conference, the one thing he said, which is what Packers' GM reiterated, and you hear if you talk to NFL people is, you can't have two guys take up 20% of the cap. You just can't. The Raiders have to build an entire defense, not one guy. They weren't winning defensively with just one guy, no matter how good Cleo Mac was,
Starting point is 00:27:13 their defense wasn't any good, and then you're going to throw $90 million guaranteed. So, yeah, and then look at the teams who wanted him, right? The bills, the jets, teams without a quarterback making top quarterback money. The only team with top quarterback money that was willing to trade for him was the San Francisco 49ers, and that's because they have an incredible depth of one salary cap space, and to all those draft picks that they have accrued.
Starting point is 00:27:41 And even they weren't willing to go to the ends that the bears were willing to go to. The bears have a quarterback that's on a rookie deal, and that allows them to put this amount of money into the linebacker position. I actually think it was a smart move for the long-term play of the Raiders to trade Khalil Mack. But it should be noted, Green Bay is a unique situation. They can't get free agents. So to get a star, you have to get them in the draft. And let's not kid ourselves.
Starting point is 00:28:06 There are no Khalil Max generally in drafts. There are no Aaron Rogers generally in drafts. I could make an argument. You know, Mike Lombardi, who we both know, has a theory, and I always thought it was a smart one. He goes, if you're in a port city, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, draft maturity. Port cities stay up later and they're wild. Green Bay is the opposite of that. They can't get free agent.
Starting point is 00:28:29 Couldn't I argue, you're never going to get Lawrence Taylor. You're never going to get Khalil Mack in Green Bay. No, you're, well, they did once upon it, one time. Yeah, Reggie. One time. And they, by the way, won Super Bowls. They did. I think that, again, this is that, this is what complicates it with Aaron Rogers' contract, right?
Starting point is 00:28:49 Everyone knows Aaron Rogers deserves the money, but how much money can you take? And he took, what is it, $80 million he's going to make in a year, $80 million in cash. Yeah. So I just, I don't think you can tie up that amount of money, even if you think you were this close with two first round draft picks. It's one or the other, and for some teams it's both. One, you can't give up for two first round picks. And the other $90 million guaranteed to one defensive player is a huge, huge risk. And it sucks up all of your cap room, your inability to make other moves.
Starting point is 00:29:22 Look, the Raiders back themselves in the corner with an offseason in which they overspent and undervalued Cleo Mac. They did. And remember, the defensive market had been stagnant for three years. It hadn't moved. hadn't moved. Von Miller's contract set the market, but no one had had jumped over. But then the Aaron Donald thing happens. And oh, yeah, by the way, I think this all relates to Levyon Bell and that Leveon Bell's now. And hey, maybe I don't show up. Maybe I force them to move me. Maybe I forced them to give me a long-term contract because he sees what happens in L.A.
Starting point is 00:29:52 where the Rams relented and they're going to be in salary cap hell in the upcoming offseason. And he sees that the Raiders finally waved the white flag and trade away Kaleel Mack. Doug Gottlieb, John Amis. The Dugger, after my show on Fox Sports Radio. So it's interesting. The media plays favorites. Jim Rice was a dominant power hitter for over a decade in Boston. When I was a kid growing up, he was like Reggie Jackson from the other side of the plate. But it took him a while to get into the Hall of Fame because he didn't like the media. T.O. is a first ballot Hall of Famer. But Hall of Fame voters acknowledge it didn't make our job easier. The media likes people who make their job easier.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Terry Bradshaw, for the second time, criticized Mike Tomlin. Big Ben has criticized publicly, Mike Tomlin. Harrison comes on my show. Great player criticized him. He's two and seven against Belichick. Last eight years with that team, three playoff wins, and they are against like Matt Moore, beat Kansas City, couldn't score a touchdown.
Starting point is 00:30:51 Should have lost to Cincinnati. Okay. Should have lost the game to Cincinnati. So that three week playoff wins. Yes. So Bradshaw comes out and he says, you know, you're just not my kind of coach. He's too loose.
Starting point is 00:31:01 I like tough guys. But this is my thing. I think Mike Tomlin, like Pete Carroll, they've won Super Bowls. They're not my, they're too loose for me. Two kumbaya, two pro player, two pro enabling. But Bradshaw's going to get crushed. And my point is we, the media play's favorites because Tomlin makes our job easier. By the way, isn't he Bradshaw in the media?
Starting point is 00:31:21 So isn't he? Well, the point is two legends at quarterback have both ripped the same coach. And they get crushed for it. Tomlin makes our job easier. He's the best guy at the podium in the history of the league. He's tough, he's cool, he's funny, he looks like a... He's the guy he didn't want to have a beer with. He gives us great quotes.
Starting point is 00:31:38 We shredded Tom Coughlin, who beat Notre Dame at Boston College, who took the Jags of the playoffs as an expansion team second year, who beat Belichick and Brady in Super Bowl's. We crud. Yeah, but Cofflin also made, what, one playoff in his last seven years his head coach of the Giants? We, with the Hall of Fame quarterback, who won two Super Bowls? Rip, rip, rip, rip.
Starting point is 00:31:57 He didn't make our job easy. Okay, so you think he's overrated, underrated? Tomlin gets pre-old. protected by the media because he makes our job easy. He's the most quotable, fun-loving, outspoken coach. I would also say it's fair to say he's also dealing with a lot of stuff, right? Like they had Dick Leboe, who he had to kind of usher aside. He had to the Dick Leboe style doesn't work in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:32:23 The idea of, oh, you got to load up, stop the run, Blitzberg. Everybody knows it's coming. Part of it is what he inherited, the style that he inherited, the people that he worked with, they had to make a change, and he quietly ushered that aside. I didn't love the Todd Haley hiring, and I think that ultimately hurt his relationship with Ben Rathesberger. But let's not let Rothesberger off the hook. He'd been a pain in the ass for a long time between riding the motorcycle and getting to an accident, between some of the other off-the-field stuff, and the fact that he constantly complains and then
Starting point is 00:32:51 throws out maybe I'll retire. He's always kind of banged up and hurt, but don't worry, I'll show up and play. You know, he's found a way to kind of navigate the Antonio Brown stuff with the Facebook book in locker room and with the Levyon Bell, now contract situation. So look, I think it's a hard job. Do I think they've underachieved? Yeah,
Starting point is 00:33:12 probably, there probably should have been another Super Bowl in there. But it's also fair to say the Patriots went a decade without winning a Super Bowl, right? We're all anointing Bill Belichick as being the best. Remember, there was a time when they went a decade without winning Super Bowl. And there one catch rule away from having
Starting point is 00:33:27 home field advantage throughout. You sound like one of these media guys. I'm just being, I'm painting both sides of it. What I haven't heard from Terry Bradshaw is what specifically about him, don't you like? We have the Terry Bradshaw sounds. He did it last year. I was on the set with us. Right.
Starting point is 00:33:41 Here's the second one. Play the tape, Greg. I played for a tough sucker, and I was afraid of it. And we played our ass off for him because we feared it. And I don't see that with this guy. He's chest bumping and all that. I'm sorry, but he's not my kind of coach. And I said it before.
Starting point is 00:33:58 I say it again. My criticism is, how can you have? this great offense and you being a defensive guy and I think that football team should have been in another Super Bowl or two. How could they not be? Okay, now, by the way, Big Ben, his criticism has been the exact same. A couple years ago, he said, again, it was a loss to Dallas or something. Do we have that sound? Okay, so here's Big Ben sound, which is similar to Terry Bradshaw. We'll chew this up and we need to be more disciplined and more accountable. They're a great football team. Like I said, we're undisciplined and not accountable.
Starting point is 00:34:34 That's why they're one of the best in the business, and we're not right now. So they're saying the same thing. Yes. So that's like. Look, and some of the lack of accountability does, a lot of it falls on the coach. Let's also give them a little bit of a pass with last year. Not only does the catch rule, but you lose Ryan Chaser, your leader defense. That's true.
Starting point is 00:34:53 That's completely. I sat here on this very couch and said, what happened when Ryan Chazier got hurt was the Steelers lost their chance to go to the Super Bowl. Right. Right. So look, do I think they can stop Jacksonville, which they suddenly couldn't stop Blake Bortles? If they have Ryan Chays here, I have no idea. I think it gives them a much better shot. And he was somebody who could patrol the locker room. Look, I don't want to go back in time and have coaches with those short bike shorts, scratching themselves and blowing the whistle and saying some gun and some be all the time. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:23 But there is a mix there to which you can't simply only be a player's coach. and what Belichick has done ruling with an Iron Fist does tend to work better, even if it's not fun as the Eagles don't think it's fun. But I also think that you have to take in the context of the team, the era, the players they're bringing in, and the fact that the Steelers have just as big a reputation as anybody around the league of not paying their players. So if you're not going to pay guys, you better make it enjoyable to go to work.
Starting point is 00:35:50 I think he's dealing with a lot of stuff. What I haven't heard is schematically, is it simply a lack of accountability? And is that based upon the person, hell they're bringing in, or is that based upon the culture that Mike Tomlin sets down? We got a lot of stuff. I still got about five things I want to talk to Doug Gottlieb about. So don't go anywhere. We're going to bring him back. Brian Cox today, top of the hour, the five stories in the NFL I'm done talking about. I'm completely bored. I may be forced to talk about
Starting point is 00:36:13 him, but I'm tired of talking about him. That's coming up in 20 minutes. Doug are staying here back in a second. As you know, I've been talking about it on my podcast. I've been upping my style game and giving my closet a makeover thanks to Peter Millar. And it's been so easy because they're about quality, value and style. Peter Millar is easily the most comfortable clothing I've ever worn. Started wearing it at the beginning of the summer and I'm wearing it well into the fall. Peter Millar polo shirts so easy to take care of. Out of the dryer do not have to put an iron on them. Hit golf balls, go to dinner, sun protection built into the shirt. Peter Millar sports shirts look like a button-down dress shirt but feel as comfortable as a T-shirt. Peter Malar is the most comfortable clothing I have
Starting point is 00:36:55 ever worn. And right now you can head over to peter millar.com slash h-e-r-d to check out some of their favorites. Be sure to use my link and you'll get a complimentary free hat and free shipping too. That's peter millar, m-l-l-a-r.com slash heard. Peter millar.com slash heard. Borrow up to 40 grand to pay off credit cards. Go to lending club.com slash sports. loan made by Web Bank, member FDIC, equal housing lender, Lending club.com slash sports. So you're a parent.
Starting point is 00:37:30 You got young kids. I'm a parent. I got older kids. And I know you're already going through this. And this is what I've gone through a couple times because my kids are now all, except a couple, except a couple. Your son is six weeks older than my twin daughters. I got, I was there when your son was born.
Starting point is 00:37:46 I got three. I got two in college. I got a chef. I got old kids, too. So when you're a parent, you make decisions with your wife. Yes. Can you let them drive by themselves? The New York Jets had Josh McCown, who threw week 14 last year was better than Tyrod Taylor.
Starting point is 00:38:03 It everything until he got hurt. Then you brought in Teddy Bridgewater, who everybody thinks is better than Tyrod Taylor. Sam Darnold was so good in OTA's camp film room, you're like, driver's license. Go, go to Nevada for the weekend. Go, I trust you. Baker Mayfield with Tyrod Taylor they gave him a learner's permit
Starting point is 00:38:24 they're like we like you mom and dad are going to be in the car because we kind of know you get a little squirley am I being unfair no I think here's a simpler way to put it you know actions not words are what's important and the
Starting point is 00:38:41 actions of the Browns only only recently naming Baker the backup the backup not the third thing the backup tells you what people in the NFL are talking about, which is it hasn't been close in Cleveland. No matter what you've seen at times in the preseason, what you've seen on hard knocks, the fact is it hasn't been close in terms of competency, leadership, ability to play in an NFL game between Terad Taylor and Baker Mayfield.
Starting point is 00:39:08 Terraud's better. Not close. Now listen, it shouldn't be close because Terrod Taylor just, he did lead the bills. And I know the Chargers and the Ravens spit up all over themselves. they should have been in the playoffs. But the bills did go to the playoffs. He's a competent starting quarterback. And as much as I love Josh McCown, as much as you do.
Starting point is 00:39:25 And the story was great. He was coaching high school. And they dug him out of retirement. And now he's back. And they overachieve winning five games last year with the Jets. The fact is to Rod Taylor is better. Does make more money for a reason and should be a better quarterback. But what no one at least, I believe, is saying,
Starting point is 00:39:44 but people who watch workouts, watch practice have watched film and have been around Cleveland will tell you is it ain't close. Now let's go to the Jets. Yes. It was close enough is what you're saying. It wasn't close. He loaned them away. Remember, Darnold is just 21 years old, only started for a season in three quarters.
Starting point is 00:40:05 And you know, look, they had Teddy and Teddy Bridgewater has gone through all this stuff. And they wanted to increase his value. But if they had any questions about Sam Donald, they would have kept, they would have kept Teddy. Bridgewater. They did not. They parted with him for a third round pick. And look, it's a bit of a gamble if you hold on to Teddy Bridgewater. Somebody goes down week one, week two, week three, maybe you get a first round pick for him, maybe you get a second round pick for him. They still probably got overvalued from the Saints. He's probably more of a fourth round pick in terms of value. But the fact that they were willing to part, forget naming him the starter, to part ways with
Starting point is 00:40:39 Teddy Bridgewater tells you that Sam Donald has blown them away, that this is what happens in college basketball, it used to be you'd have a junior and then a freshman and the junior, if he hadn't been a starter, like if it's close at all, the freshman is brought in for a reason to ultimately become the starter. Right. And if it's not close, you know that you've got a problem that freshman's not as good as you thought.
Starting point is 00:41:02 That's what they're telling us. Donald is better than they thought. As good or better than they thought. And they've been a little disappointed with Baker Mayfield. Look, he has a high football IQ. He's tougher than a $2 steak. he's really accurate but he is really little. He's not crazy athletic.
Starting point is 00:41:20 And he's just not even close in the competition with Terad Taylor. And if it's not close, you run the risk of losing the locker room if you play a guy who's not ready. That's a real thing. Absolutely. Here's a rule I live by. Joy can tell you this. And you know this. You cannot fool the players.
Starting point is 00:41:36 Can't. You can't. You can fool the media. You can fool your fans. You can fool the front office. Ownership, I mean. You cannot fool the players. And if you walk in straight face and say like, hey, we're starting Baker Mayfield.
Starting point is 00:41:48 They've been watching every practice. They know if the kid has it or doesn't have it. You run the risk. And if you're a guy who's won one game in two years, you have to have that locker room day one. If you want a chance of beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, Terad Taylor gives them the best opportunity. And it's not close. That's what you're not hearing out of Cleveland. All my chips on the table.
Starting point is 00:42:07 Atlanta beats Philadelphia tomorrow night, NBC. Other network, I'll be watching. They're a fine network, not as good as us, but they're fine. I think Philadelphia feels like a little bit of a hangover. A little bit of a hangover, right? This is every cliche ever. They win a title, and they do so in incredible fashion with a backup quarterback and a trick play and stopping the great Tom Brady who's got the ball down five,
Starting point is 00:42:35 and they get a strip sack and win the game. But, you know, coach has a book. Lane Johnson, twice suspended, comes out talking all kinds of trials. You know, Nick Bulls comes back. They don't yet have a car. Swins. Al-Shon Jeffrey not playing. Legerrett Blunt, not there.
Starting point is 00:42:50 Yeah, look, the two games that I peg that I know are going to happen. The Vikings are going to beat the Rams. Just so, you know, this is like week five, I believe, because the first Thursday night game, it's Rams Chargers. That's going to be a bloodbath at the Coliseum. Meanwhile, the Vikings have Buffalo the week before. Three weeks to prep, take the Vikings all twice on Sunday. But this one, Thursday night,
Starting point is 00:43:14 remember Atlanta very easily could have beaten. People forget that New England couldn't stop Philly. Minnesota couldn't stop Philly. Atlanta did stop Philly. And they're a dome team that had their own Super Bowl hangover to start the season. That Super Bowl hangover is gone. They come back hungry. They got Julio Jones with a little bit of extra money, super motivated,
Starting point is 00:43:35 healthy at running back. I'm with you. Atlanta's going to go on the road and pop the air out of that balloon. Doug Gottlie, great stuff. Fox Sports Radio after our show. Hour number two coming up. Five stories in the NFL I'm just done talking about. I'll probably be forced to talk about them.
Starting point is 00:43:51 I am totally bored with all of them. They're all big names. They're all big stars. And there's really no story behind the story. Thanks, Doug, it's The Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeard Radio app. This is The Herd.
Starting point is 00:44:09 wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Live in Los Angeles, Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is joining me hour or two today. 30 minutes from now, a guy I love having on, complete straight shooter, was a tough guy. Multiple pro bowler at linebacker, Brian Cox, was one of the most outspoken players in the National Football League when he played. He is really connected to the league. He's done some coaching.
Starting point is 00:44:37 He's coming on the show in 30 minutes. and joy. Have you had him on undisputed? We have, yes. Brian's very entertaining, knows his stuff, and there's just no BS with him whatsoever. Legendary tough guy. He was a legendary outspoken tough guy and a great, great player. So he'll be joining us.
Starting point is 00:44:57 So listen, when I pick my topics every day, I'm trying to pick stuff that I think you're interested in. So some of these stories you may be interested in. The tough part for me is I never want to fake it on the air. I never want to pretend like I care about something that I don't. So what I'm trying to do every morning when I do this show is find stories that you'll watch and find stories I feel strongly about. And then when we can connect, I really care. But I saw this headline this morning.
Starting point is 00:45:29 And there's five stories in the NFL. I keep seeing written about, talked about, I'm just over them. I'm just completely over them. I can't even fake it anymore. Let's go through my top five stories. I'm tired of faking that I'm interested. Number one. Here it is.
Starting point is 00:45:47 Patriots quarterback Tom Brady addresses retirement. Acknowledges, quote, there's an end coming. No kidding. He's 41. Yes. The end is near. It's like sitting in a theater for two hours and ten minutes. The end of the movie's coming.
Starting point is 00:46:04 How do I know? because you're two hours and ten minutes into the movie. We've been talking about this really for like two years now. Okay, it's, yes. Because it started at halftime of the Falcons Patriots Super Bowl. It was like, this is the end of Tom Brady. The Doctor Air Boys playing. I mean, our people in the newspaper industry,
Starting point is 00:46:28 there's a million stories with New England. Forget the NFL. And this is nothing against USA today. but God, for the love of God, I love the Patriots. I love Brady. I can't even fake it anymore. I have a strong feeling, Colin, that there will be a time when Tom Brady retires from football. I have the same feeling.
Starting point is 00:46:47 It's weird, right? Weird. The movie in the theater is going to end. I just know it. It's a weird feeling. Here's the second story. Number two. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:59 Lavian Bell, is he going to play for the Steelers in week one? Folks, they win with him, they win without him. He's going to eventually play this year. Week 4, week 6. I mean, seriously, the Browns are in their division. The Bengals are in their division. They've got Pro Bowlers up front. The best receiving core outside of Atlanta in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:47:14 Big Ben, veteran coach, led the AFC and Sacks. Listen, he's going to play eventually. You know, listen, he, I'm not going to, do I have to talk about this every week? They're 10 and 4 in the games he hasn't played. The Steelers have shown an ability. they are so gifted at so many places in a kind of weak marginal division, they're winning this thing with or without him.
Starting point is 00:47:39 Whether he starts week one and week three, he'll start at some point play, be good, and they'll be a playoff team. Now, as a fantasy football player, I have to push back a little bit. We kind of need to know if we can draft him high, you know. But week's he going to be back. It's an important stuff going on.
Starting point is 00:47:56 Third story. Number three. Who is going to sign Colin Kaepernick? in the NFL. I don't know. He's suing the league. Like, you know what suing means? I'm trying to get money out of you. I'm not saying Colin Kaepernick's not good enough to start in the league, but let's be honest. Nobody's going to build a franchise around him. If at all, he's a backup, I got to spend this much time worried about a backup in the NFL. He's a backup quarterback. He hasn't played in years. The only, and by the way, he deserves, he doesn't deserve, I don't
Starting point is 00:48:33 care. He's not good enough as a quarterback. And I don't want to talk about politics. I want to talk about football. I'm a sportscaster. Nobody's ever come up to me in my life and said, Colin, who's your favorite senator? Colin, if you had to rank top five governors, who would they be? Nobody's ever said that because nobody cares about my political thoughts. And I think Kaepernick can be an interesting, fascinating guy on other shows, not mine. But as a football player, he's okay. Better than some, worse than many. I'm just done talking about it. Well, at this point, and the situation with the lawsuit, it's pretty obvious that he's not going to get a job in the NFL. But numbers-wise, his last year playing, while the team was obviously awful, his numbers were
Starting point is 00:49:14 equivalent to Andy Dalton and Tyrod Taylor. But they're not suing the league. Right, but that's why he's not going to. The discussion of whether he's going to get a job in the NFL at this point is done. It's done. It's in a non-discussion. All right. Here's the fourth one.
Starting point is 00:49:27 Number four. This one's embarrassing. Nick Foll should start. Not Carson Wendst. week one. And when Wence comes back, he's going to have to fight for his starting job. Oh, shut up. Nick Foles and Carson Wence. People. You're talking about Air Force One and a prop plane. What are you talking about? Carson Wentz is an all-time talent. Nick Foles almost quit two years ago. Good God. Nick Foles in the Super Bowl, Mark Sanchez got the back-to-back AFC championship games, beat
Starting point is 00:50:03 Brady in New England, beat Peyton Manning in Indianapolis. Tim Tebow won six straight games. Would you stop trying to convince me Nick Foles is a challenger for Carson Wends? Come on. There's not a general manager in the league in a decade that have given the choice between those two would say, let me think about it. Let me make some calls to my scouting department. They'd be like, who's asking again?
Starting point is 00:50:29 What's your name? You think these guys are close? They're not close. The minute Wins can play, he'll play. Lord, I'm tired of that. And finally, number five. Where's Des Bryant going to play? Where's Des Bryant going to play?
Starting point is 00:50:43 I was kind of interested in this for about a week. But it doesn't really matter because he's not a number one receiver. Receivers, even the great ones in this league like Julio Jones and O'Dell Beckham Jr. Don't really translate to wins. They can be good and get yards. But nobody's going to build a franchise around Des Bryant. Nobody really trusts the maturity of Des Bryant. the Cleveland Browns passed.
Starting point is 00:51:04 The Patriots are desperate and passed. Listen, somebody's going to figure out a way to get him on a team, and they're going to figure out how to get him on a team once the season starts so they can cut him if he becomes a headache. But Des Bryant's not winning games in this league. I mean, he had 800 yards last year for the Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys, knowing Jason Witten, was probably going to retire, knowing their weakest position was receiver,
Starting point is 00:51:31 knowing they plan a division with the Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl champs, and a great defense, knowing Pat Schumer's going to the Giants, Giants are going to be better. They're like, we're out of, we're done with Des Bryant. And that's from an organization, Dallas historically, Jerry Jones, that loves players who everybody else is afraid of. The Des Bryant story. So in review, these five stories, I can't fake anymore. Tom Brady retiring, duh, Labian Bell's holdout. Colin Kaepernick deserves a job.
Starting point is 00:52:04 Carson Wentz is better than Foles, potentially. Or no, excuse me, Nick Foles and Carson Wence, we should be arguing over who starts. And then Des Bryant, where is he going to go? Because my job, basically, honestly, is a talk show host, is to find stuff that you'll listen to and watch and that I at least have enough passion that I can talk about it for five minutes at a time.
Starting point is 00:52:27 Boy, these five, I'm done with. I think Desa will actually be incredibly interesting once he does end up on a team because I have the feeling like Des is going to talk finally about what his mentality or what the process has been this whole time that we're all speculating about. It's almost like this extended NBA free agency type of thing with Des. But he won't sign anywhere. So it'll be interesting again once he finally signs somewhere
Starting point is 00:52:51 because, well, he'll talk. Really? I think so. The only thing that keeps me interested in the Desk situation is it seems like he has this strategy that no one else understands. Yeah. That to me is what is interesting about it. The fact that he's not signed anywhere, I mean, logistically,
Starting point is 00:53:11 just talking about the contract situation makes sense. Doesn't Des do a bunch of stuff that nobody understands? He's kooky-madukee. Like, Dez is, when the Cowboys said no thanks, I think that sent a huge message in the league. Jerry says thanks, not no thanks. to players who can be trouble. When Jerry Jones is like, I'm out.
Starting point is 00:53:33 Yeah, I think that Jerry and Des, it seems like they still have a good relationship because Des only talks about everyone but Jerry. He talks about all the other players, coaching staff. Yeah, Jerry's staff. Jerry's son came to him and said, Dad.
Starting point is 00:53:47 Yeah, this seems like this was forced on Jerry. Yeah. Coming up next, we have a buy-seller hold. We have Brian Cox, who is always a fantastic guest. We're not halfway through the show on a Wednesday. NFL starts tomorrow. Atlanta, I think, goes to Philadelphia and beats the Eagles. Stick around. A lot to come. Buy, sell, hold Brian Cox around the corner. The NFL is back with a huge doubleheader on Fox. Most of the country will see Odell Beckham and the Giants take on the Jags at 1 Eastern,
Starting point is 00:54:16 followed by America's Game of the Week as Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys Battle Cam Newton and the Panthers. Sunday on Fox or watch anywhere on the Fox Sports app, check your local listings for the game in your area. God, there's, I tell you something, some of these NFC East games, Giants, Jags, Cowboys, Panthers. NFC East has a wild. Just the NFC East alone. If you look at it, Washington plays, the Cowboys play, the Giants play, and the Eagles play starting tomorrow night with Philadelphia hosting Atlanta. They could go 4-0, they could go 0-and-4. Just the NFC East. I don't remember in my lifetime, the NFC being this deep and this good. There's not a single easy W in the NFC. AFC's got about four easy-ws. There's not one in the NFC. They're going to be a NFC. They're
Starting point is 00:55:00 going to be a lot of teams that are seven and seven in week 14 and are still battling potentially for their division. I mean, that's not crazy. You're going to have, it's going to be so competitive in the NFC. So, you know, it's funny. So Terry Bradshaw, I came out a couple years ago, and I criticized Mike Tom and I said, he reminds me of Pete Carroll. He's clearly good enough to win a Super Bowl, but it's a lot of pro player, rah, rah, pop stuff. And it's like, that stuff over time erodes. You can sell that for a while, but I've been saying this about the Steelers. In the last seven years, with Big Ben, with great pass rushers, with superstar running backs, pro bowlers on the offensive line, best receiving corps, maybe in the league or second to Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:55:45 In seven years, in an easy division where they get home field, they got three playoff wins. And they're all ugly. One of them was against the Bengals in that mess of a game in which Cincinnati had it and lost it more than the Steelers won it. The other one was over Matt Moore's Miami Dolphins. You remember that. And the other one, they couldn't score a touchdown, six field goals to beat Kansas City in a rare, boring, Steeler playoff game.
Starting point is 00:56:12 That's not good enough. It's like Harbaugh. Nobody doubts Harbaugh can coach. But right now at Michigan, that's not good enough, and everybody's unloading on him. Nobody has a problem unloading on Jim Harbaugh. Nobody thinks he's a terrible coach. But we're saying is, for the Michigan job,
Starting point is 00:56:28 for the standards. Not good enough. Can't just beat Purdue and nine wins a year. Not good enough. Got to win 11. Got to beat Ohio State. That's all I'm saying. So Terry Bradshaw criticized him again.
Starting point is 00:56:38 Every time Terry criticizes him, it's like, whoa, what are you saying? He's saying when everybody's saying. This is Terry Bradshaw with on Mike Tomlin. He's really a great cheerleader guy. I don't know what he does, but I don't think that he's a great coach at all. His name never even pops in my mind when we think about great coaches in the NFL. Okay, so that was last year, major blowback. He said it this past weekend he was talking.
Starting point is 00:57:09 Terry Bradshaw said this. I played for a tough sucker, and I was afraid of it, and we played our ass off for him because we feared him. And I don't see that with this guy. He's chest bumping and all that. I'm sorry, but he's not my kind of coach, and I said it before. I say it again. My criticism is how can you have this great offense and you being a defensive guy? And I think that football team should have been in another Super Bowl or two.
Starting point is 00:57:37 How could they not be? So I got a former legend twice. By the way, Big Ben has come out publicly multiple times and been critical of him. This is Big Ben, the current quarterback. We'll chew this up and we need to be more disciplined and more accountable. They're a great football team. Like I said, we're undisciplined and not accountable. That's why they're one of the best in the business, and we're not right now.
Starting point is 00:58:05 Okay, those guys have earned the right to an opinion. Terry and Big Ben. Then James Harrison, long-time Steeler came on my show, and he said this. I feel like it needs to be more disciplined. Some of the things that they do coaching-wise, I feel like some of the situations that we were in when we were there, as far as time management, calling of, you know, defenses, you know, we had a situation where we had double-called defenses because, you know, one thing was said, then someone said something else.
Starting point is 00:58:35 So you got half the defense playing one defense, the other half playing something else. So you get situations out there where it looks bad like, oh, this guy doesn't know what he's doing. Well, he's just playing a different defense possibly on that play than what the other half of the defense was playing. When I have three people who have all earned the right to an opinion and they all have the same opinion, and it's something that I talked about three years ago because I noticed it. It doesn't mean Mike Tomlin can't coach. But, I mean, we're crushing Harbaugh.
Starting point is 00:59:04 We know Harbaugh can coach. He's won coach of the year multiple times. He's won championship small level, rebuilt programs, got to a Super Bowl. We crush Harbaugh. By the way, we crush Tom Coughlin. Barry Switzer has three national titles on a Super Bowl. We don't even pay him the respects of acknowledging he exists. I mean, we kind of skip over Jimmy Johnson to Billboard sales.
Starting point is 00:59:27 We don't even acknowledge Barry Switzer. All I'm saying about Tomlin is when I got three guys, three legends, earn the right to an opinion saying the same thing. They've got to be on something. Last seven years, you're from Pittsburgh. Joey, last seven years, three playoff wins. They've all been. They've definitely underachieved.
Starting point is 00:59:40 There's no question. So Bradshaw get more pushback. Mine takeaway, what does he say that's inaccurate? Well, Bradshaw's getting pushback because... He's Terry Bradshaw. He's Terry Bradshaw, and he's, you know, he's supposed to have the Steelers back. But that's, that's his opinion, that that's what's happening. I don't agree that you need to be, you know, this...
Starting point is 00:59:57 Rigid. Yeah, this ridiculous old school. You know, there's a balance to everything. You have to deal with players these days differently than you did in the 70s. That's just the way it is. No, I agree with that. But there is a balance to it. I think what he's, what they're, the one thread that they all have in common is that there seems to be a lack of discipline.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Yes. And by the way, my eyes tell me that. My eyes tell me. Joy Taylor with the news. No. No. Turn on the news. This is the Heardline News.
Starting point is 01:00:26 Time now for the fantasy headline sponsored by Draft Kings. I know that you're not super hot in this story, but I told you it's for fantasy people. Levion is important. They are the best on offense when Levion is in, and he is not back with the team as of this morning. But Mike Tomlin remains oddly optimistic. Here is why.
Starting point is 01:00:46 Do you feel more comfortable with what you have behind Levon going into Cleveland than you did last year? Yes. Why is that? James. So James Connor, fantasy players. I picked him number one on my fantasy team. James Connor.
Starting point is 01:01:02 A good little pick up there because we don't know when Levion's going to come back. As you mentioned in the last segment, we really don't know. It's the same story every time. Now, he would forfeit, Levion would, would forfeit $853,000 for every game that he misses. But he is expecting a payday to be around $17 million per year on his season. next contract. So that would be, in theory, worth it for him. And he can sit out up to 10 weeks and still get credit for an accrued season under the terms of the CBA. So he could basically sit out all those weeks, play six games in any playoff contest and still be a free agent in March.
Starting point is 01:01:36 Doesn't sound like a very good teammate to me. Well, I mean, that's one way to look at it. In other way is he's, you know, he's playing for his money. He feels like he's been a good teammate and he's earned a huge contract. So this is this is what he's going to do. In the meantime, attention to James Connor. Oh, James Connor, number one pick in my fantasy draft last night. I didn't say number one, but he could be a nice little sleeper there. Earl Thomas's standoff with the Seahawks, speaking of holdouts, is over, but his bad blood with the organization might remain.
Starting point is 01:02:07 He posted this on Instagram this morning, saying, I worked my whole life for this. I never let my teammates, city, or fans down as long as I've lived and don't plan on starting this weekend. With that being said, the disrespect has been well noted and will not be forgotten. Father Time may have an undefeated record, but best believe I plan on taking him into triple overtime when it comes to my career. This Seattle thing.
Starting point is 01:02:30 This, okay, I talked about Tomlin. This goes back to Pete Carroll, who I know can coach. But I've been critical of Pete. Pro player, you're the man. You keep telling a player, you're the man. They think they're the man, and they're going to do this. Richard Sherman turned on him. Michael Bennett they got rid of.
Starting point is 01:02:46 Earl Thomas, Marshawn Lynch. Like, this thing's unraveling in Seattle. Marshall Lynch was the first one in turn. It was also reported today that the Cowboys offered a second round pick for Thomas within the last week. And according to Schefter, the Seahawks obviously said Pat. So they did not take that. I think Earl Thomas is absolutely worth a second round pick. Not a first, but a second.
Starting point is 01:03:06 He's seeking a new contract in the final year of entering a four-year, $40 million extension. He signed in 2014. So he's going to be with the Seahawks. Finally, Blake Bortles turned the ball over a career low 16 times in 2017, including 13 interceptions. But despite watching Bortle's best season, protecting the ball, was not good enough for Doug Maron. Let's take listen to his new goal for Bordals.
Starting point is 01:03:30 Zero turnovers. I mean, no, I mean, really. And I'd say that with anyone on our team that touches the football. Yeah, you know, that's not. By the way, so basically what you're saying is we're going to play real safe with Blake Bortals. Well, you're not winning a Super Bowl playing it safe with Blake Bortles. I also feel as strongly as I feel about Tom Brady eventually retiring from the NFL, I feel as strongly about Blake Bortles having a turnover this season.
Starting point is 01:03:58 I feel like those are real hot takes by both of those by me. I think I feel confident in both of that. Say it again? I feel like Blake Bortles is going to turn the ball over more than zero this year. Yeah, yeah, the over under on that. Yeah. I take the over on that. Take the over.
Starting point is 01:04:12 I don't like when I hear this, though. When I hear coaches, I don't like parents saying, They say, no mistakes. Kids spill things on the carpet. Players make mistakes. Artists spill paint. This idea, don't throw. If I was a quarterback, and I heard this all day, no interceptions, no interceptions.
Starting point is 01:04:31 You know what? I'd be tight. I'd be tight as a player. Let a pro athlete be a pro athlete. I mean, Aaron Rogers has the lowest interception per pass rate in NFL history at 1.6%. And he's never thrown through within five in a season since he's earned a starting job. So I like my great players to play loose, play fast, play hard. I don't want them to play like, hey, don't make any mistakes.
Starting point is 01:04:55 You're going to throw interceptions. You're going to make mistakes. Just don't make mistakes in the biggest moments and try to avoid doing it in the red zone. Don't throw picks in the red zone. Don't throw it in their red zone or your red zone. But if you throw a pick at the 45 because you're trying to throw a seam route and blow the game open, go for it. Joy Taylor with the news. Well, that's the news.
Starting point is 01:05:13 And thanks for stopping by. line news. 12 NFL seasons, multiple pro bowls, a Super Bowl champ, and he also played under guys like Don Shula, Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, Dave Wanstead. I love him as a guest, the former all-pro linebacker, one of the first real outspoken dudes that paid attention to in the NFL, Brian Cox, in the herd today. I said when I watched Brian Cox, I was like, I don't know if I like Brian Cox.
Starting point is 01:05:41 That guy's a talker. Then I met Brian Cox. And I was like, man, you played under so many great coaches. I actually think the reason that great coaches like you is because they considered you a cerebral player. And not everybody is. And I was thinking about this. So Bradshaw's come out. James Harrison's come out.
Starting point is 01:06:01 Big Ben's come out and criticize Tomlin, little Lucy Goosey. Coaches are different. You played under Belichick and Parcells. Right. Not Lucy Goosey. How would you have played under Tomlin? because Belichick, you love Parcells and Belichick. They love you and you love them.
Starting point is 01:06:18 Exactly. How would you have played under a Lucy high-emotion coach? I'd be fine. Here's the thing, though. He's won a Super Bowl, and not many coaches have won the Super Bowl. This day and age of players, you can't get into a situation or a place where you coach these guys hard. these millennials need a little bit of patting on the butt and pep talks. And so Tomlin does that well.
Starting point is 01:06:50 And so it works for him. You don't have to do anything but be yourself. Okay, so your thing is be yourself. Be yourself. Do you think if Parcells was 34 today? But Bill would be smart enough to get, because Bill was a psychology guy. Right. Bill would be smart enough to figure out, I can't bark at these guys all the time.
Starting point is 01:07:08 Well, he did bark at the guys all the time. And the difference is, though, in this day and age, the coaches coach the coaches to be hard on the guys. And then the head coach come behind and plays mother or father. Hey, put the arm around. Hey, let's get this right. That's the reputation for Nick Saban, by the way. But that's what all coaches are doing today. And, you know, to talk about the millennials, I'm one of those throwback guys that think you coach them all hard.
Starting point is 01:07:34 And the guys that are resilient and the guys that are tough, those are the guys that are going to play well for you. any coaches there. You were, so with Khalil Mack, my takeaway is is that there's four or five positions I'm going to pay for. Right. Quarterback, left tackle, pass rusher, interior,
Starting point is 01:07:57 Aaron Donald level guy, maybe, you know, the elite corner, the captain of a defense. If you get these rare Ed Reed, guys that kind of are coaching the defense, they're coach on the field. So Raiders are like, no thanks. Here's what I wonder. How does it play in the room in Oakland when he was valuable, great, a good dude and Derek Carr's best friend?
Starting point is 01:08:20 You've been in locker rooms when guys have been moved. New England's done that a couple of times. How does it play in the Raiders locker room? Not good that you get rid of a guy that can help you win. The second thing is, though, I think in this whole issue is John Gruden's ego, he came in and he tried to attack the big dog. and if I get this guy to straighten up, everybody else will fall in line. And so the other aspect of it is the money.
Starting point is 01:08:46 The Raiders didn't have money to pay a little mac. And so it was going to be at a standstill for a long time. Until October, until they get their TV money, they wouldn't have the money to pay $140 million. And so what John Gruden did was he started the campaigner talking. We played bad with him. We can play better without him. And then all of a sudden they start talking about,
Starting point is 01:09:05 let's trade them, let's get these draft picks, and Chicago bit. And so now to give him two first round draft picks in Oakland and to give Khalil Mack $140 million, that is gigantuan in this day. So you don't like what the Chicago Bears did? I think it's going to help them, but it's not enough to tilt the field for me. Because they're not paying, you know, Trubisky's on that rookie contract. Right.
Starting point is 01:09:28 But they don't have enough offense in my mind. Everybody's talking about what Nagy has done and how good they look in the preseason. That's preseason. Real deal starts Sunday, we'll see. I don't think they have enough offense to beat Minnesota or Green Bay in that division. And Khalil Mack in the defense, the defense has played well the last few years under Fagio. Fagio, Vic Fagio. So to me, I don't think they have enough to tilt the field to make them that much better to playoff contender in my mind.
Starting point is 01:09:56 So the Philadelphia Eagles, we have these four things. The Philadelphia Eagles win a Super Bowl. The NFL is a lot like music. there's a lot of one-hit wonders. Right. There's a lot of team. The dirty birds in Atlanta, and then they just disappear.
Starting point is 01:10:11 Right. You know, I think Saxonville is going to shrink a little bit because Andrew Luckin Deshawn Watson are back now in their division. That's just my prediction. But Philadelphia wins. Right. Okay, I got. They're putting up Super Bowl signs in the building.
Starting point is 01:10:25 The starting quarterback's not ready. They opened with Atlanta, who they beat last year, got a little chip on their shoulder. Their offensive coordinator, the quarterback coach leave. Their coach got, again, a book deal. Yep, yep, yep. Yep, yep. Like, I look at Philadelphia. These are the warning signs in my life of watching the NFL that they're not going to repeat.
Starting point is 01:10:43 I don't think they repeat anyway. Green Bay Packers are a team to beat in all the football. But two things struck me. They wanted to bench Nick Foles in the preseason or talking about how he's not playing up the park. And then secondly, when you play in front of passionate fans who haven't won anything in a long time like the Eagles fans, they're buying dinners for all the players, they're kissing all the players. can do no wrong in Philadelphia. You can go out there and do some of the craziest stuff
Starting point is 01:11:10 and you won't get arrested in Philadelphia right now. You start to get a sense that, you know, oh man, we're still on this Super Bowl cloud and you forget to go to work in the offseason. So to me, I think that they can struggle. Now, having said that, I think they can beat Atlanta on Thursday because Atlanta can't
Starting point is 01:11:26 score on their defense. You look at the last two times they played, Atlanta scored 10 and I think 13 points. So the defense holds them down against Atlanta. But I do think that you get a little bit of sense of, I'm the most important piece. That was the reason we won. And it takes you five or six weeks.
Starting point is 01:11:43 It's a Super Bowl hang on. No, it's really interesting. So the Phillies had a two-year run when they were great. Right. evaporated. Sixers had this Allen Iverson finals evaporated. to your point. When they win or are great in professional sports in their city, they are a puffier chest town. Yes, they are. I think that's just that's the nature of the city and the players relish in it and then they wake up a couple days later and go, we're not prepared
Starting point is 01:12:21 for the next season. Right. The only thing that I think can help their case is, in my opinion, the NFC East is not that strong. You don't think so. Johnson no good. Now, that's a little Strong. No good? No good. Nate Soder, Odell, Sequin Barclay. No good. No good. They're no good. They might win five games. Oh, come on. Look, you got Pat Sherman's your head coach, bro. Yeah. You don't like Pat Schumer? No. He's a good man, but I mean, look at his record. I mean, I don't see winning coming out of there. So you look at the Dallas Cowboys overrated, in my opinion. Fair, fair to say. The defense is going to play good. The addition to Chris Rashad is huge. So the defense let them down before. The issue I have is the strongest group on their team, the offensive line, they have two of the strongest guys missing.
Starting point is 01:13:15 One is coming back this week. The other guy is the illness. I think Frederick has the illness and not due to come back for a while. Will Zeke Elliott be able to run the ball the way he has? Without the guys. Without the guys. Because that was the foundation of their team. Now you take two of those guys out of one guy out
Starting point is 01:13:32 and the other guy coming back off. So you think Philadelphia is the best of an average division? Of an average division, yes. So I think they can still get the 10 and 6th and win the division. But to me, the Green Bay Packers, everybody's on this Rams kick. If the Rams have to go to Green Bay in the wintertime in the playoffs, Green Bay is going to dust them up. And Green Bay's defense is going to be so much more improved than they've been.
Starting point is 01:13:54 Aaron Rogers is still going to score. Minnesota's going to score points. The Rams are going to score. But to me, it's Green Bay or bus. Finally, you know New England very well. You know Belichick. I said this year between losing a left tackle, they only have one great player in the box defensively, Dante Hightower,
Starting point is 01:14:12 off an injury, Edelman out until October. It does feel like, I know it's Belichick, I know it's Brady, but it does feel like the weakest New England team in a while, no? But does it matter? Who's going to beat them in the east? Nobody in the- You got Buffalo starting with a quarterback that, you know, was so bad last year, and all of a sudden they've resurrected.
Starting point is 01:14:33 directed them and said, this is the guy we're going to throw out there instead of putting Rosen out there. You got the New York Jets who have played good defense, but they're starting a rookie quarterback. And they don't have the offensive pieces. They don't. And the Miami Dolphers are overrated. They just, they can't get it right. So, you know, before they wanted to be a running team, now they went out and, you know, get Tannenhill back, and now they think they can spread out and throw it.
Starting point is 01:14:55 They just don't have a clue. So even if the, the Patriots are weaker this year than they've been in a while, they still come out, get into the playoffs and anything can happen. They do probably get a buy. Yeah. I mean, listen, and this is no knock on Alabama, but the SEC until this year has been down for a few years. And Pete Carroll, when he dominated the PAC 12,
Starting point is 01:15:14 Pac-12 was down. Right. Some part of Brady's greatness has been, he's had a lot of buys and a lot of home playoff games. Yes. I mean, they've played at Foxborough a ton in his career, mostly because the three other organizations, Buffalo, New York, and Miami have largely been poorly wrong.
Starting point is 01:15:32 It gives you home playoff games and buys to get healthy. Exactly. Brian Cox, great stuff on Speak for Yourself, I imagine, later today. Yes, sir. Good. So great seeing you. Nice being here. I appreciate you. Okay. Coming up next, buy, sell, and hold. A really, really good one today.
Starting point is 01:15:50 Brian Westbrook, a former Eagles coming up in the last hour. Car shopping's confusing. A lot of terms. Dealer price, invoice, list price. Here's what's not confusing. Saving three grand. MSRP. Brian Westbrook, the former Eagle 49er, multiple-time Pro Bowl running back. We'll be joining us last hour. We are halfway through. That's it. Our show today. It's that time. We generally do it on Wednesdays. I'm the stockbroker. You're asking me,
Starting point is 01:16:18 do I buy it, sell it or hold it. Here we go. Time to buy. Colin will decide if he'll buy it. Sell or hold. Buy seller hold. Dak Prescott will be the top for quarterback in the NFC East this week? Well, they face Carolina. Carolina, to me, as the arguably the best front seven defense in the NFL. Pro bowlers in their front seven. Questions on the back end.
Starting point is 01:16:50 But I like Carolina's defense. They're also one of those teams you don't think has a great home field advantage. They were six and two at home last year. Two years ago, they were eight and no at home. Last year was, so now a couple years ago, they were a mess. But they're pretty good at home. And also, Carolina and Dallas are built to run the football. This is going to be a lot of running.
Starting point is 01:17:13 The game's going to move quickly. It is not going to be a shootout. These two teams are 6040, 65, 35. They'd prefer to pound the ball. C.J. Anderson now, Christian McCaffreys for Carolina. They want to take the ball away from the Cowboys. They want to pound that football and just hold that football in Carolina. So, John, sell, sell, sell.
Starting point is 01:17:32 I don't think Dak's going to have a huge weekend, week one. Buy seller hold. one of the big four quarterbacks will win the Super Bowl, our big four being Brady, Breeze, Rogers, and Rothesburg. Well, this is a year. First of all, those guys have won five of the last 10, and they've also won four of the top seven, including they have the best odds.
Starting point is 01:17:53 So Vegas thinks they have the best odds. Also, I can make an argument right now. Steelers, Green Bay, and New Orleans, Ben Rogers, and Breeze, not only are those great quarterbacks, those are three of the best rosters right now in the NFL. They really are great rosters.
Starting point is 01:18:12 Tom Brady doesn't have the roster, but he's got the weakest division in the NFL. So John Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, yeah, I think Brady, Breeze Rogers, Big Ben, I think one of those four win it this year. By Solar Hole, the NFC East will go 0 and 4 this week. Well, that would presume that Philadelphia would lose at home.
Starting point is 01:18:32 Okay, and they are a favorite. That would presume the giants are going to lose at home. They're an underdog to Jacksonville in a game I cannot wait to watch on Sunday because I've said my Giants of the Super Bowl, Dark Horse. Here's the other game. The Washington Redskins have been bizarrely good when they go out west, and they go to Arizona last year. Remember, they went into the Coliseum and manhandled for big chunks of the game, the Rams.
Starting point is 01:19:00 It was a one game at home all year. The Rams were literally up against it. They went to Seattle last year and looked great against the Seahawks. And frankly, Washington's got pass rushers and Arizona's big problem is their offensive line. Cards have a very average, the below average offensive line. So John. Sell, sell, sell. Too many close games.
Starting point is 01:19:23 Somebody in the NFC East is going to win this weekend. They won't go 0 and 4. Buy seller hold. Carson Wentz will not win MVP. Okay. So they open tomorrow with Atlanta. If they win, my prediction is they're not going to play Carson Wentz in week two. Because Carson Wentz is like 95% ready to play, but he's not perfect.
Starting point is 01:19:43 So what they're saying basically, tomorrow night against Atlanta is we could start Carson Wentz, but if we can win with Nick Foles, we'll just keep playing Nick Foles. So Carson Wentz is 100% healthy. And I also think that division, there's a lot of loss. for Philadelphia. I look around at guys I have for the MVP this year. And Carson Wentz, I think, is going to miss at least one game, probably two if they beat Atlanta. And so I just think it's harder to win the MVP when you get off to a slow start and you don't play all 16 games. So John, bye, bye, bye, Carson Wentz won't win the MVP.
Starting point is 01:20:29 By Seller-hold Sam Darnold and the Jets will finish second in the AFC East. Okay, the Jets, Bills, and the Dolphins, the over-under for all of them is about six. So when you start, let's just say New England's going to win the division. So then I line up, Buffalo, the Jets, and the Bills. Well, Tana Hill, Sam Darnold, and Nathan Perlman, Peterman. My bad. Doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter in Buffalo.
Starting point is 01:21:02 Who's the best quarterback of those? I think it's Sam Darnold. Who's got the best defense of those? I think it's the Jets. Who's got the easiest schedule of those teams? No question. The New York Jets who have the fifth easiest schedule in the NFL. So John, yes.
Starting point is 01:21:19 Buy, bye, bye! Sam Darnold and the Jets will finish second. I think it's going to be close, but my start. It's a distant second. Yeah, it's a distant second, but easiest schedule, probably the best quarterback, and I think they have certainly an argument for the best defense. All right, last one. By Sell Hold, three rookie quarterbacks will start by October 1st.
Starting point is 01:21:41 My prediction on Baker Mayfield has been October 7th. That's when the NBA camps open. No LeBron. Cities ready to have a star and Baker comes in. I also think about that time, the Browns will have lost to the Steelers, will have lost to the Saints, probably lose at Oakland or to the Jets at home. There'll be one and three,
Starting point is 01:21:58 and the owner's going to come down and say, NBA season starting. There's no LeBron. We're one and three. This is not good enough. If I'm going to lose, I'd rather lose with Baker Mayfield. And Sam Donald, by the way, is going to be playing the Browns in week three. And what if Sam Donald wins?
Starting point is 01:22:13 And everybody's going, Sam Donald can start. But that's only October 7th. And the question is October 1st. Also, Josh Rosen is not as good as Sam Bradford right now. He's not. If he was, he'd be starting. So Bradford may get hurt, but I'm going to guess he's going to be healthy through September. And then in Buffalo, Josh Allen, I'm sorry, is not close to starting.
Starting point is 01:22:35 He's Lamar Jackson. He is a project. He's not close to starting. Let me tell you something. If you can't beat out Nathan. Peterman. Peterman. The coaching staff is saying this is not, this could get really ugly. So John, sell, sell, sell. Three rookie quarterbacks will not start by October 1st. By October 21st, probably. Starting point is 01:23:56 Monday was my last day off. and then it's just like nothing but fun until like February 3rd. Like now until February 3rd, I get, my show is like six months of fun for the next six months of fun. I kind of reiterated the same thing. We're about to have a lot of fun. Yeah, exactly. So coming up in 15 minutes, former Pro Bowl running back with the Eagles and 49ers, Brian Westbrook. We'll be joining us on the show today.
Starting point is 01:24:24 Later, best for last. I'll tell you something historic happening in the NFL right now. and you're going to see it in week one. Yesterday, we talked a lot about Khalil Mack and leaving the Raiders and going to the Bears and how the Raiders were the big loser in that trade. But this morning, I'm driving to work, and I kind of had a completely new perspective.
Starting point is 01:24:42 So let me start there. The real loser was Aaron Rogers. I want you to think about this. I want you to think about this. If you're the Green Bay Packers, why didn't you get Khalil Mack? A, you're the only team in the NFL. Fowl with two first round picks next year.
Starting point is 01:25:00 Have them. You're it. Nobody else has them. One quick, you get two firsts, we get the next Lawrence Taylor. B. You knew rival bears in your division. You play them twice a year. We're going after
Starting point is 01:25:18 Khalil Mack. It had been reported before the deal. Aaron Rogers has had two collarbone surgeries. Want to face him minimum 10 times next five years? That Viking pass rush and Khalil Mack, the next Lawrence Taylor? Really, want Aaron to see that? Think he's going to get to Aaron a couple times? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:25:37 Plays him 10 times in five years. You want to face the next Lawrence Taylor? C. Green Bay's defense right now is young and mostly cheap. You've got room to spend big money on a Khalil Mack. D. Reggie McKenzie is a former power. Packer executive. He's the current Raiders GM. You had a built-in emotional psychological advantage. You had a guy that respects and likes the Packers in the building, and he didn't use it.
Starting point is 01:26:15 E, we've got history here, folks. Green Bay is not where free agent stars go. They don't go to Green Bay, so when you can get them in a trade, you get them in a trade. F. Aaron Rogers never loses in the playoffs when you give him help defensively. When Green Bay gives up fewer than 23 points in the playoffs, Aaron Rogers has never lost. But here's what Green Bay has given up in his losses in the playoffs. 51 points, 37 points, 45 points, 28 points, 26 points, 44 points.
Starting point is 01:26:56 Green Bay is 7 and 1 if you can just hold people to a reasonable number 23 you've got good interior defensive linemen you drafted corners next year the one thing in the first round you're going to draft you were going to draft a defensive end
Starting point is 01:27:12 a pass rusher I said this yesterday once again people in Green Bay this organization is not comfortable with risk but Colin but Colin we signed Aaron Rogers to an extension.
Starting point is 01:27:28 That's not risk. That's duh. That's like telling my kids, hey, don't walk out in front of traffic. That's like, hey, I didn't jump out of a plane without a parachute. Of course you resign Aaron Rogers. That's not courage.
Starting point is 01:27:44 That's like you're idiots if you don't do that. Kaleel Mack, well, it takes a little courage. You got to give up stuff to get stuff. I don't want to hear that signing Aaron Rogers took guts. That's the biggest, duh, in professional sports. Courage would have been,
Starting point is 01:28:01 we're going to give up two first round picks to get Khalil Mack. You had it. You're not a free agent destination, and you blew it. Let me shift to this. Hard Knocks, final edition was on last night. I'm a parent. I've got kids, and I've got stepkids. And here's the way it works.
Starting point is 01:28:23 Everybody watching me that's a parent. Every parent listening to me knows what I'm about to say is true. As a dad, sometimes, I'll talk to my wife. And you have these conversations. You know, do you think he's ready to do this by himself? And your kids are all different. Some are more mature. Some are less mature.
Starting point is 01:28:50 Some can handle being out by themselves. Some can't. And it really happens a lot. with driving when you're young. Is she ready for a driver's license? Or one of those like permits where the parents are in the car? Baker Mayfield on hard knocks last night got a learner's permit. Watch this with Hugh Jackson.
Starting point is 01:29:18 Watch. I've made a decision to make Baker the back of quarterback. I just wanted to make sure I want you guys to hear it from me. I said all the stuff that flies out there. and all that B. Okay, thank you. I need to speak to you for a second. You're a very talented young man.
Starting point is 01:29:32 Keep grinding. Okay, and I'm going to keep creating situations for you to even do more. I hope you understand the opportunity that's in front of you right now, but you've earned it. I'm not just giving it to you. You've earned it.
Starting point is 01:29:45 Okay? Appreciate it. Friday you. Appreciate it. All right, buddy. The number one pick has earned the backup quarterback role. What the Browns' coaches are
Starting point is 01:29:57 saying is we think you're talented, you're a really good kid, but right now we're going to bring you along kind of slowly here. Philadelphia with Carson Wentz and the Jets was Sam Darnold. When Wentz went to Philadelphia, they already had a starter, Sam Bradford. They had a starter. They were going to bring Wentz along slowly. When the Jets had Sam Darnold fall to them at number three. Josh McCown was very good last year. Go look at his stats week one through 14. They brought in Teddy Bridgewater in March. They had a starter. But Wence and Darnold were so impressive. We're going to trade the quarterback. We're going to trade Sam Bradford. We're going to trade Teddy Bridgewater. It's your car. Now, we know you're not
Starting point is 01:30:49 going to be the best driver on the road. We know you're not going to be a perfect driver. But here's the keys. We'll see you tomorrow. that they're not refined, they're not perfect, but Cam did things and Luck did things, and Carson went to two pick did things, and Darnold is the number three pick. They do things, and you're willing to trade veterans who at the moment are better than them, but there are just, wow. This is why if you're going to draft the quarterback number one, you better know he's going to give you some wow,
Starting point is 01:31:23 and you can give him keys to that card day one, and he is just going to burrow through it. Cleveland? Even with just Tyrod Taylor? You have earned your right to a learner's permit. But mom and dad will be in the car. Let's go to the grocery store. That's what happened yesterday.
Starting point is 01:31:47 That's what Cleveland did yesterday. Told Baker, he earned a learner's permit. Coming up next, a former niner, a former. Eagle, Brian Westbrook, Philadelphia, opens up defense of its world championship that is right around the corner. That's coming up. Don't be the guy in the room with a long, sloppy looking untucket shirt, untucket shirts, fall to perfect length.
Starting point is 01:32:10 GQ calls it perfection. promo codes heard untucket.com code H-E-R-D. Played in the NFL for almost a decade. Most of his career were the Philadelphia Eagles. Multiple pro bowls. Drafted out of Villanova. You think Villanova football, you think Howie Long, you think Brian Westbrook via The Coward, Global Satellite Network. He is joining us.
Starting point is 01:32:33 Well, there was a great punt return. This is 15 years ago. And Brian, this is you. This is one of your great plays of all time. I can remember it vividly. I think we have the sound on this. So I'm going to play this for my audience, then get into my question. Let's roll this first.
Starting point is 01:32:52 Go ahead. Bowses at the 21 and picked up by one. Westbrook on the return. That was fourth quarter with a little over a minute left. Now, the story today is Odell Beckham. He may be considered to return punts. Now, you were a running back, and if I recall, you liked returning punts. Take me in my audience, Brian, into this.
Starting point is 01:33:32 Is it a good idea? Was it exhausting? Was it too much pressure? Take it away. You know, Colin, obviously, is great to be here. But I think it's a great idea for the Giants to use Odell Beckham Jr. In selected situations. Now, for me, return to punts was very important because I understood how important the field position game was.
Starting point is 01:33:53 And it's a big time difference from starting on the 20 or even the 5-yard line compared to the 35 or 40-yard line with a shorter pump return. And that was my thought process. The thought process is you get the ball up in the air, you have 11 guys coming down, you can make a couple guys. miss, you go and you make one guy, you outrun, two guys you can outrun, and then you're home free. You pick up a couple blocks, and then you have a huge impact on the game. It's about field position, and when you have a guy like Odell Beckham Jr. or myself back there back when I was playing, then you have the opportunity to change the field position, which can change the course of a game in a single play. And that's why I think it's a great idea to have a guy like Odell Beckman
Starting point is 01:34:36 Jr. back there returning part. Philadelphia is the Super Bowl. champs, generally speaking, on average, about six teams that made the playoffs, you know, don't the next year. And Philadelphia's puffing its chest out and the coach has a new book and Lane Johnson's talking and they got a banner in the locker room. Do you worry that, not that Philadelphia will be 5 and 11, but here they go, here comes Atlanta, Carson Wentz isn't healthy, that they're going to take perhaps a major step back this year, Brian?
Starting point is 01:35:12 I think if you're a Philadelphia Eagles fan, you have to be worried about that. You have to be worried about the stat that says not very many Super Bowl teams that have won return to the playoffs the next year certainly don't win the Super Bowl again. I think this team has a couple things going forward. There's just not very Super Bowl winning teams that have an MVP candidate come back the following year. Not very many Super Bowl winning teams have a Hall of Fame caliber left tackle coming back like Jason Peters, Darren Sproles coming back.
Starting point is 01:35:43 So they have some guys, Jordan Hicks as well. They have some guys that are starters that can help this team and contribute mightily that are coming back that are still hungry. You add them to a team that's already very good, a defense that's very good, a coaching staff that knows how to help the players out, knows how to empower players. And you add all of that to a great equation. I think the Eagles have a lot of good things going. But here you are, Colin.
Starting point is 01:36:07 you're now the hunted. You're not the hunter anymore. You're now the hunted, and it certainly will be tough with the Philadelphia Eagles this season. Terry Bradshaw, former Steeler Great, came out yesterday and said Mike Tomlin's not my kind of coach, little Lucy Goosey for me. Big Ben is criticized him publicly. James Harrison came on my show two weeks ago and said
Starting point is 01:36:27 sometimes the details aren't great. Listen, the guy can coach. He's obviously won. But Pete Carroll and Mike Tomlin to me have always been a little bit the same. They're very pro player. Little loose, high emotion. Sometimes I don't love all the details. How would you go back, now you played with Andy Reid.
Starting point is 01:36:46 Andy's known. Players like Andy Reid, would you prefer a little more of a player coach or a Belichick guy, a Sabin guy who's a little more rigid? What worked for you? Well, the thing that worked for me was detailed. I want to know exactly what we were going to be doing every single day of the week. Even in the all season, And Andy Reed was detail-oriented.
Starting point is 01:37:10 He understood that on Mondays we were going to do this. Tuesday, we were going to do that. Wednesday, we're going to install the base offense. Thursday, we're going to go third down in red zone. Those types of things, having the same schedule, the same detail schedule every single day was a thing that helped me out an awful lot. And that's the type of coach that Andy Reid was. Now, for me, that was great.
Starting point is 01:37:30 Now I went to San Francisco. Mike Singletary was a coach. He was a different type of coach. And he didn't have as much success as a head. coaches Andy Reid, but he was just a different style. He was a little bit more loose, even though he was a great motivator that when you heard him talk,
Starting point is 01:37:45 you're saying, I love this guy, I'll run through a brick wall for you. Throughout the week, he was just a different style of coach. That just wasn't my style of coaching. He wasn't as detail-oriented as Andy Reid was. You know, when you look at Levian Bell, he's holding out now, and we all know Levian's great. There's
Starting point is 01:38:01 six or seven guys in this league. Todd Gurley is phenomenal. We know that. Lavian Bell, the kid in Arizona, Johnson. There's a handful of guys. Alvin Kamara's really good. Ezekiel Elliott's really good. But, you know, running back, Joy and I,
Starting point is 01:38:17 Joy Taylor and I were talking about this today. Running backs know they take a beating. And running backs, they're like, listen, man, I'm not taking a beating if I don't have to. If you were Lavian Bell, knowing that you could miss all the games until early November and still be considered a full season contractually.
Starting point is 01:38:39 What would you do if you were Lavian Belt, knowing they're going to lean on you, 275 times to run the rock? Well, that's the hard part at the running back position, especially the style that Lavian is. He's great inside, outside the tackle, a great runner with great patience. He's a guy that can catch the ball out of the backfield,
Starting point is 01:38:56 great hands. He contributes in the past game, one of the better blockers as a running back in the NFL. So he gives you everything that a running back should give you in the, NFL. He's a glue that holds that things together. He gets eight guys in the box for Ben Rotherzberger. He opens things up for Antonio Brown. These are all the things that he brings to the game. That's why it's a little bit confusing why they wouldn't want to reward him. He's one of
Starting point is 01:39:19 the best running backs in the game. If I'm leaving on bail, it's very simple. I bring and I help your team win football games and have been doing it at a high level for a very long time. I'm going to withhold my services until you're ready to pay up. I'm not going to allow you to use and abuse me and then go out and trade me after the season's over after you've done that. At this point, I went under the franchise tag last year and I wanted a long-term deal. I waited into the end of camp to come in and you guys still didn't pay me in Pittsburgh. Now, if you guys don't want me to be there, allow me to go out and get a free agent deal somewhere else or allow me to be traded somewhere else to a team that's willing to pay me.
Starting point is 01:39:59 I certainly understand exactly what Labion is going through. I think he wants to get paid. He wants to be appreciated with the all-mighty dollar. And I think Pittsburgh should certainly do that. By the way, what if I'm the Steelers and I say, listen, we like you, kid. But you got suspended. You've gotten in a little trouble. And we're not sure.
Starting point is 01:40:20 So you say you're going to hold out. And I say, well, you know, you got suspended here. You've held out of camp. I don't know if I can trust you. Is that a legitimate pushback on him? Well, here's my pushback if I'm leaving on bill. stats, the numbers, they speak for themselves. I'm one of the best running backs in the NFL,
Starting point is 01:40:37 and you just don't pick a guy up off the street that can catch, that can run, that can block, that can hold this offense together, that defenses have to pay attention to every single down. That doesn't just get picked up off the street. It takes time to cultivate until one of the best backs in the league. And James Connor is going to be a good running back, but he's not Levyon Bell. That would be my retort to that. You know, Troy Aikman said yesterday, he said, you know,
Starting point is 01:41:02 I think Des Bryant leaving Dallas is okay. Jason Witten was really good, but I think, you know, Dak's going to have multiple wide receivers, and I like Dak. And I've said on this so before, I don't think he has the biggest arm. I don't think he's Carson Went's talented. I don't think he has cam size or Aaron Rogers' gifts. But there's something about Dak I like. Every time he opens his mouth, he sounds like a grown-up.
Starting point is 01:41:26 And sometimes a Cowboys owner doesn't even sound like a grown-up. Okay? So I like Dax leadership qualities. When you watch him play, and I know this is hard for an eagle and he's a cowboy. But is a quarterback? Who is he? What is he? Is he special?
Starting point is 01:41:42 I mean, is he, there's nothing wrong with being a B quarterback. What do you see with Dack? Well, of course, that, that offense is built around the running game, which a lot of offenses are. And without Ezekiel Elliott last year, he struggled just a bit. And I think you'll see a different type of quarterback this year. I think that definitely has talent. He's not a guy that can carry a team.
Starting point is 01:42:03 He proved that last year until he continues to improve, works on his throws, works on his timing, works on his ball placement. He has a while before he can be considered in the top tier of quarterback. But when you combine it with the running attack, when you combine it with multiple receivers around him that can protect him and put him in good situations, so now he's in third and medium instead of third and long,
Starting point is 01:42:26 now Dak Prescott looks like a totally different question. quarterback. And I think you'll see a much better quarterback this year than you saw last year, especially when you didn't have that running game with Ezekiel or Elliott early on in that year. Did you play with T.O. in Philadelphia? I did. Okay. So Des Bryant can be a little bit of a headache. We know that. I watched the Amazon Prime series. He's blowing up the receiver room and he's going all crazy and I'm thinking, man, this guy is a lot of work. How, and Des Bryant's still looking for a gig. When you were with Tio, you know he's gifted. But were there times with T.O.
Starting point is 01:43:01 That you felt like, man, he's not a great teammate. That sometimes a guy can be special physically, but they don't help the room. And over a 16-week season, Brian, the room's got to be good, not just the talent. Take me back to your T-O years. How did you feel about some of his outbursts? Because I think a lot of that is what's keeping Des out of the league. Well, I think Tio was a good teammate. I think he was a guy that when he came on our team, he was exactly,
Starting point is 01:43:29 where we need it. Of course, he brought on the field stuff 15 plus touchdowns. He's a guy that can go up and catch any ball. He can take a five-yard pass and turn it into a 95-yard game. But he also improved our practice habits. When he came on that team, we had already been to three or four NFC title games. We hadn't got over that hump yet. We were already a very good team. Tio was able to add practice habits, a culture around a confidence around a football team that we actually needed. And we were already. very good. And I appreciated Tio for that. I think he did so many good things for our team. Unfortunately, it just didn't end the way that we wanted to. First of all, it didn't end
Starting point is 01:44:08 the Super Bowl. That's the most coveted trophy in sports. But it didn't end the next season with Tio being suspended and kicked off the team the way that any of us wanted it to. And I think if as a grown man now, 30 plus years old, if we all went back to 2004, 2005, where we all went through all of this nonsense with the team, the owner, the GM, all those types of things. We would do things differently. And I think Tio no different than myself and Donovan and the other guys on the team probably would handle things a little bit differently. But as a teammate, Tio was always good to me.
Starting point is 01:44:43 It was a refreshing sight to see him in the locker room. And then when you put him on the field, he was one of the most fierce competitors that you'll see around the NFL. I love having Villanova guys. I love Villanova basketball. I got Howie Long I work with at Fox. Brian Westbrook. I just something about Villanova guys.
Starting point is 01:44:59 They come on my show. They've always got something to say. Brian Westbrook, by the way, teaming up with Crown Royal, introducing the first off-the-field water break. And Brian, tell us what that is. Well, I think we all understand what a water break is when you're on the field.
Starting point is 01:45:18 But Crown Royal wanted everyone to not only enjoy the game day experience with the game on the field, but also to hydrate yourself with your alcohol alcoholic beverage, but make sure that you take a break. Drink a little of water, drink in moderation, be responsible so that you can enjoy the entire experience before the game, during the game, and after the game, make sure that you stay hydrated. And I'm just proud of Crown Royal. They're saying we know a lot of people drink. We just want to make sure that you drink responsibly. Make sure that you stay hydrated. Make sure you enjoy the Crown Royal water break. And if you do that,
Starting point is 01:45:52 you'll enjoy the entire game day experience. And I'm excited to be a part. part of it. Brian, great guest. Love having you. Love watching you. Thanks for coming on the show. Thanks so much. You bet. Joy Taylor, she's got our news. No, no, no, no, turn on the news. This is the Heard Line News. So, O'Dell will face arguably his toughest test of the year in week one when he lines up against Jalen Ramsey, but O'Dell insists that he is going to
Starting point is 01:46:22 keep his emotions in check from now on. Oh, I can't wait for this. Take a listen. I think I'll learn my lesson. But this is probably, if not, the best, one of the best corners. There's no way around it. And this defense that they have is, you know, they have six, seven pro bowlers, maybe more on the team. They're a very good scheme.
Starting point is 01:46:43 They're probably the best defense in the NFL. So we have a very tough challenge ahead of us. But I think we're all excited about the opportunity, just be able to come back to play football again. I know that I'm very excited. so it's definitely going to be a good match. So he also admitted that he learned his lesson, and then he took the cheese. We all know what happened with Josh Norman.
Starting point is 01:47:07 This is going to be, I'm telling you, Jags Giants is one of those games that may not jump out to people because the Giants were so bad last year. It could be the best game of the weekend. Well, according to Brian Cox, they're just not good. Yeah, Brian Cox didn't like the Giants at all. At all. He was not being moved up his description.
Starting point is 01:47:25 It's in New York. So, you know, it's not like New York has to go down to that humidity and you can just get overwhelmed. You got to bring the warm weather team up to New York to field goal game. This is a one o'clock game Sunday is a great. There's so many feisty matchups in this game. I like this out of O'Dell, though. This was a big critique of O'Dell that he allowed people to get in his head and he got in his emotions. And it took him off of his game.
Starting point is 01:47:51 If you allow people that are, you know, talking trash to you to move you. I don't know. Well, we'll see. Kill him with kindness. That's his new motto. I do like that strategy, though. On Sunday, Andrew Locke will play in a regular season NFL game for the first time since the end of the 2016 season. Spent last year rehabbing from shoulder surgery. And apparently, he felt like he would never play again.
Starting point is 01:48:14 He told the indie star, I was scared, scared in my core, in my insides. There was a time I was very scared about football and my place in football. I was a sad, miserable human. I was not nice to myself, nor was I nice to anyone. else. I was a miserable SOB to be around. I was nervous. I was scared. We forget about the psychological toll of these injuries.
Starting point is 01:48:33 It's not like, have you ever had a surgery before? Nope. I had ACL surgery from playing soccer. So you were a muralist and a soccer player. Yeah. At the same time. Basketball and volleyball.
Starting point is 01:48:48 What, college? High school, college? In high school, I played all of those sports. In college I ran track. Did you really? Yeah. So you were a muralist, a broadcaster, and a college athlete. That's amazing. Goulet! What have you done?
Starting point is 01:49:05 You got talent over here I'm working with. None of that. I finally got somebody over here. Well, it's hard to come back from surgery. And I'm just a regular person, so obviously it's not that big of a deal. But if you're Andrew Luck and you've got the weight of the world on your shoulder, literally, I can't imagine what psychologically that does to you. It's why Agent Peterson is so fascinating.
Starting point is 01:49:25 Gore is so fascinating because the pressure on them to come back and perform at a level when you're coming off of a surgery like that is incredible. You know what I always think? How about these Olympians that you work like eight years in a pool or eight years on a ski slope and like three weeks before the Olympics you get hurt? Like Lindsay Vaughn, you're like, oh my God. No, it's psychologically devastating. It's the only word to describe it. And that's your whole life. You were a division one athlete. I ran division two. I was recruited Division 1 to Kent State. I chose to not go there.
Starting point is 01:49:57 Where'd you go? I went to IUP in Pennsylvania. Oh, yeah. And then I decided I was not going to go to the Olympics. Were you a senator in your teens? Like, what else did you do? I did want to be president one day. Maybe it could still happen for me. Who knows?
Starting point is 01:50:11 You know? Hey, listen. We're letting people in there now. Who knows? So finally, last night, a mass Sue Byrd stole the show in a winner takes all game five of the WMBA
Starting point is 01:50:24 semifinals. She had her fifth broken nose. She scored 14 points in the fourth quarter. And the story was in her fifth broken nose. Yeah, she had to play with the, uh, with the mask. She's probably one of the top five players in the history of women's hoops. She's the oldest player in the WNBA right now in her 16th season. So she's the Ray Allen of the WNBA? Uh, yeah, you could say that. You could say that. She had 14 points in the fourth quarter. and Isaiah Thomas recently wrote about Seattle Storm in the Players Tribune. He said when I see people overlooking or flat out not recognizing the storm as Seattle's elite pro hoops team, it gets me fired up.
Starting point is 01:50:59 It's a disrespect for the entire game of women's basketball, to put it really simple. If you don't respect women's basketball, you're a joke. Cheryl Miller, greatest players ever. Cheryl Miller. Lisa Leslie. Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird. Joe Swoops. Good Lord.
Starting point is 01:51:16 Candice Parker. I'll tell you one that does Maya Moore count. I saw her play at Yukon. Oh, God. Yeah. Has she been a great WMBA player? She beat Phoenix and Diana Tarasi last night. Yeah, I'd have to go top ten.
Starting point is 01:51:28 Who's who's the what's that? Rebecca Lobo. Yeah, Rebecca Lobo's in there. Do they all go to Yukon? I want to shout out Jordan Canada too. She had seven points as a rookie from UCLA. And she actually gave him the first lead of the game to start the comeback in the win.
Starting point is 01:51:44 So it will be the Seattle Storm and the Washington Mystics in the finals. So that is the Ray Allen, the prototype in the NBA. Sue Bird. Shout out Sue Bird. Where to go. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Herd Lie News. Coming up, I'm going to tell you why this week in the NFL,
Starting point is 01:52:01 you are guaranteed to see something absolutely historic. As we start the NFL campaign tomorrow, this is the first big weekend. Best for last is around the corner. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
Starting point is 01:52:17 Within the IHeart radio app, search heard to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Car shopping's confusing, a lot of terms. Invoice, dealer price, list price. Go to Truecar.com. Save three grand, on average. Off MSRP. Joy Taylor and I, good show today. Brian Cox, Brian Westbrook, Doug Gottlieb.
Starting point is 01:52:38 It's time for best for last. After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't gotten to the point yet. Quit holding out on us, cowherd. It's the best for last. Okay, week one of the NFL is going to be all-time crazy. 15 teams, almost half the league, has a different week one starter at quarterback than they did for week one last year. Redskins have gone from Kirk Cousins to Alex Smith,
Starting point is 01:53:05 the chiefs have gone from Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes. Some of these quarterbacks are going to work out, and some of them are not going to work out. So I'm going to go through the 15 quarterbacks and tell you if they're going to work with their teams now, immediately, eventually, or never. Now, eventually or never, John Guley. First one, let's start with the AFC East. Sam Darnold with the Jets.
Starting point is 01:53:33 Sam Darnold is a rookie. They have a good defense and an atrocious offensive line. Their tackles are at least average. Interior offensive line is bad. They have no running game. They have no tight end. receivers if Robbie Anderson stays clean could be interesting. I just think Sam is guaranteed to eventually be a really successful quarterback in this league.
Starting point is 01:53:59 First year is going to be choppy, but eventually it's going to work. Ryan Tanna Hill with the Dolphins. Came out of college. It was a wide receiver, became quarterback, pretty athletic, still doesn't throw the ball down the field enough for me. It's a chaotic organization. I mean, how long are people going to try to try to? convince me this thing's going to pop. Joy, this is your quarterback.
Starting point is 01:54:22 I say never. I also am going to go never. And also, I just don't know what the dolphins are doing in general. It's a very interesting experiment. Never. Nathan Peterman with the bills, sometimes known as Nathan Pearlman. Not going to waste anybody's time. Let's just start very quickly.
Starting point is 01:54:39 Don't have to show a lot of video with this. It's going to be a never. Yeah, never. It's never going to work, ever. All right, to the AFC North, Tyrod Taylor with the Browns. Well, I mean, I think everybody knows right now he's a better quarterback, and Hugh Jackson has to win games. And, you know, Tyrod took a cold weather Buffalo last year. Should be noted that Buffalo had a lot better offensive line last year than this year.
Starting point is 01:55:05 But I would say with Tyrod Taylor, now, they're going to win games now. He can win games. Now the schedule is really tough early, and they have a very impatient owner. but Tyrod Taylor can win you games. I predict they go 6 and 10. He can win you games now. Andrew Luck with the Colts. I mean, again, I don't think he's going to be as good as he was in year three
Starting point is 01:55:26 because I don't think you can go from not playing to Aaron Rogers. But this is one of the, and I said it coming out of college, this is what you want from a quarterback. Big, strong, sturdy, arm, smart, Stanford, mobile enough, takes accountability tremendously. leadership skills. Now. He's ready to win now.
Starting point is 01:55:49 Deshawn Watson with the Texans. 15 different quarterbacks starting week one this year. We're going through him. Now eventually never work. Listen, my only question with him is health. He can be a little sloppy, play a little fast. He's got a little Sam Darnold where sometimes you're like, dude, just live for another day. Sam Darnold fumbles on times because he's trying to gain.
Starting point is 01:56:10 Andrew Luck does that. Deshawn's issue is. He hasn't yet developed the live for another day mentality, but he's ready to win now. My only concern besides his health is their offensive line. Good roster, like the coach, bad O-line. All right, a guy I know you've been on the fence on. Patrick Mahomes with the Chiefs. Love his coach.
Starting point is 01:56:34 Andy Reid's coaching tree. He's got a lot of smart guys, and their offensive weapons are absurd. Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Kareem Hunt, Travis Kelsey, who to me is better than Gronk because he's always available to play. Eric Fisher, I think left tackle's gotten better. And they're going to be in some shootouts because I don't love their defense. I'm going to go with eventually. Going to make some mistakes this year.
Starting point is 01:56:59 He's kind of a gunslinger, but I just think the talent and the coach is too good that eventually he's going to have some success. Like Sam Darnold, it's going to take a while, but he's going to be good. Case Keenham with the Broncos. Case closed. It's not, never. I don't like their offensive line. Last year is the prime example of you can win in this league if you get the perfect group of receivers and a great offensive coordinator.
Starting point is 01:57:26 And you have a great defense in Minnesota that gives you the ball to the 35-yard line. And Aaron Rogers is hurt. And you wake up and they're like, oh, Case Keenum on a bunch of games. Denver's not Minnesota. Not going to work. to the NFC East Nick Foles with the Eagles. It's not that I don't like Nick Foles. He's fine. Let's just put now. He's going to win a couple games now.
Starting point is 01:57:48 But can we, let's move on. He's not Carson Wenz. This is not an eventually, because eventually he's not going to play. And he's not never because he has won a Super Bowl. He'll play now, and then he'll sit for a long time, because Carson Wenz will come back, and Carson Wenz is way better. How about Alex Smith? with the Redskins.
Starting point is 01:58:07 I like Alex. He's a little like Tyrod Taylor. Not going to beat you over the top much. Good straight line speed. Low mobile. Smart enough guy. Good line of scrimmage guy. I think people are kind of forgetting that he wins everywhere he goes.
Starting point is 01:58:20 He won in San Francisco and they benched him. And he won in Kansas City and they traded him. So I would say eventually he and Jay Gruden on the same page. They're going to win a bunch of games. I don't know how many, but they're going to win a bunch of games. Your guy Mitch Trubisky with the Bears. You're just tuning in. Fifteen new quarter.
Starting point is 01:58:36 starting in week one from last year. Good now, good eventually, or never going to work. Mitch Trubisky. I wouldn't have picked him number one. I wouldn't have traded up to draft him. He's what they call a front leg thrower. I think he's kind of a poor man's... Jimmy Garoppolo.
Starting point is 01:58:54 I'm going to go never. I don't think this thing pops. I think they're going to be more frustrated than satisfied over time with Mitch Trubisky. How about Kurt Cousins with the Vikings? You know, I've never been in love with the guy. I mean, Whitlock loves the guy. And I'm like, he's big, he's strong. But Bucky Brooks came on a couple weeks ago, and he's like, you know, Kirk's, I'm a former scout.
Starting point is 01:59:18 Kirk's pretty good. I think they'll pull back this year because they have to face Aaron Rogers twice. The NFC's loaded. They have a new offensive coordinator. And they can't be as healthy defensively as they were last year. So how about Kirk Cousins? Eventually, it all works for him here. Ryan Fitzpatrick with the box
Starting point is 01:59:36 Is there another box here I could just go let's just move on and not even I mean how about this how about you guys guess what my answer is on this one? Yeah I'm just I'm not going to waste a lot of time on that
Starting point is 01:59:52 Yeah not going to work All right Jimmy Garoppolo with the 49ers They're not as good as everybody thinks It should be noted they're still This is a rebuilding offensive line They're playing Minnesota in the opener Minnesota's not rebuilding. Minnesota's got pro bowlers on defense.
Starting point is 02:00:08 That could get ugly. This is a completely rebuilding team. They've got elements that I like. I think they've, Jimmy Garapolo and the head coach are going to win a bunch of games. And so I would say now, you know, they're going to win some games. I think they're a 500 team, 7 and 9, 8, and 8, 9, and 7.
Starting point is 02:00:26 But let's just remember, they're not built right now to beat the Steelers. They're not built to meet the Rams. They're not built to meet the Minnesota Vikings today or the Green Bay Packers or Atlanta. He will win now. He'll have some great moments now. Let's be a little patient with the Niners. Three years, two years ago,
Starting point is 02:00:42 last year, until Garoppolo got there. There were a disaster. All right, our 15th and final new starting quarterback, Sam Bradford with the Cardinals. This answer is going to be, I think, different than the other answer. So now, he's ready to win now
Starting point is 02:01:07 but eventually he's going to get hurt and then probably never because he'll miss the rest of the season by week six yeah so that's all three he'll start now and be good eventually Rosen will take over for him but never because
Starting point is 02:01:26 it just doesn't ever last terribly long with Sam Bradford a guy I like actually when he's healthy but he's never healthy He's never healthy. Some guys, I used to cover a guy in the NBA, Brian Grant, really good player.
Starting point is 02:01:39 Every other year he got hurt. Some guy, I don't even know what it is. Then I covered John Lynch for years, who was this safety that just led. It was like a missile. He never had a concussion. Like some guys just don't get hurt. And some guys get hurt all the time. And who can explain it?
Starting point is 02:01:56 I mean, I don't know. Who couldn't explain it? By the way, Doug Gottlieb had a good take on, and Doug played college basketball at Oklahoma State. And he's a fan of Oklahoma football. So whenever there's something going on in Oklahoma, in a Baker Mayfield from Oklahoma, I always asked Doug Gottlieb. And yesterday in Hard Knocks,
Starting point is 02:02:14 they announced that Baker Mayfield was the backup. Hugh Jackson said he had earned the backup role. And I asked Doug Gottlieb earlier today. What did that tell you? They've been a little disappointed with Baker Mayfield. Look, he has a high football IQ. He's tougher than a $2 steak. He's really accurate, but he is really,
Starting point is 02:02:35 little. He's not crazy athletic, and he's just not even close in the competition with Terrod Taylor. And if it's not close, you run the risk of losing the locker room if you play a guy who's not ready and not as good. That's kind of how I feel. That's exactly how I feel. That's why
Starting point is 02:02:51 I thought he should never be the number one pick, although I did think I, the three general managers I talked to said he can play. I'm not going to make him number one. And I'll go back to something I've said over and over. I don't understand these cold weather franchises. Cleveland that keep drafting warm weather small quarterbacks.
Starting point is 02:03:10 Colt McCoy, Cody Kessler, Baker Mayfield, Carson Wentz is big, you had him, Sam Darnold's bigger, you had him. I don't get it. To me, it's like at some point, geography makes some decisions for me. When I lived in Vegas, it made a decision for me. I had to have a pool. When I lived in Connecticut, I didn't have to have a pool. Need four-wheel drive.
Starting point is 02:03:33 I now live in California. I may get a convertible. You live in Cleveland. You draft a quarterback. Get a big guy. Get a black guy. Get a big arm guy like Big Ben. Get Carson wins.
Starting point is 02:03:44 We shall see. All right. Joy and I are back tomorrow. NFL season begins in earnest tomorrow. Very exciting. Eagles. Atlanta. In L.A., it's the herd.
