We're ready to roll.
New England and the Rams.
Joy, how are you?
Good, good.
morning. Good morning to you. We start, though, with an NBA story. I was driving in today,
and the bomb dropped, right? It is Anthony Davis, superstar for New Orleans, has told the Pelicans,
I'm out of here. I'm not going to resign. Might as well trade me sooner than later.
Every time this happens, oh my word, everybody freaks out in sports. I can't believe it.
This is what is wrong with the NBA. This is terrible. All the great players are conjoining.
joining forces. Oh, settle down.
Settle down. Number one.
Anthony Davis is telling you what many stars in the NBA have increasingly told you.
I'd rather win games than make the most money.
Isn't that awesome?
Isn't that what we hope all our sports stars are about?
That they want to win.
That it's not just about stacking money on top of money on top of money.
Kevin Durant, LeBron, Anthony Davis.
These guys want to win games.
It's not about buying another house, another resort, another boat, or another car.
They want to win games.
I want my athletes to want to win games more than stack poker chips.
So good for Anthony Davis.
That's number one.
Number two is don't blame a great player if he wants out of a franchise that shouldn't exist to begin with.
Okay, this is this franchise, the Pelicans, the NBA owned it for a while.
The Benson family owns the Saints.
They bailed the league out and bought it, but do they really care about it?
Let's be honest.
They made the NFL general manager, the NBA general manager.
Nobody else does it that way.
They've got terrible attendance, the worst television deal in the NBA.
And you're going to blame because this guy wants out of that franchise?
guys, if you're a great employee in America and you don't think your company's up to your standards,
I've left places, you've left places, an NBA superstar can't leave places,
and an NBA superstar's got about 10 years, I can broadcast for 40.
And number three, don't act shocked.
This is the worst kept secret in the league.
Why do you think we created the LeBrow meter back in September?
Because back in September, Anthony Davis signed with Clutch.
sports. The deal was done that day. Don't freak out. Here's the other thing.
Is that, I'm reading Brad Turner is a guy that covers the Lakers for the LA Times.
And he said, in order to get this done, in order to get it done, the starting point for the
Lakers is trade Lanzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, their best big man, Zubosh, and a number one pick.
Well, I got news for you.
Anthony Davis, LeBron James, and according to that tweet,
Brandon Ingram, aren't winning a title.
Aren't better than Boston.
They're not better than Golden State.
Sounds top-heavy to me.
I'm not saying they wouldn't be better.
I'm not saying they couldn't make the Western Conference finals.
They're not beating Golden State.
Due to franchise and trade restrictions in the NBA,
the Celtics can't trade for Anthony Davis
until the season is over, and the Lakers know that.
So my opinion on what the Lakers will do, they want to get this puppy done fast.
There were three steps to this.
Anthony Davis had to first sign with LeBron's group Clutch Sports, Rich Paul, check.
Anthony Davis then had to announce, this is hard because your fans now will hate you,
had to announce, I want out.
And the third step is for this to work to get Anthony Davis to the Lakers is, let's get it done in the next couple of months.
Because by June, the Celtics can make this deal and they've got way better pieces, more picks, and better assets.
And the Lakers do not want to go toe to toe with the Celtics on this deal.
So my point is, the Lakers will probably give up more than they ideally want to.
So this will be a very top heavy Laker team that will be excellent, that will contend to get to the Western Conference finals,
but will not be, in my opinion, close to beating a Golden State.
LeBron now, 15th year, first major injury, Anthony Davis, not a premier three-point shooter.
Those guys are all over at Golden State.
We tend to freak out with these big moves.
But in review, he's moving because he wants to win more than he cares about money.
I love that.
Nobody should be beholden to a bad NBA franchise that shouldn't exist.
And number three, this isn't shocking.
This thing happened in September.
It was the worst kept secret in the NBA.
All right, we got ourselves the Super Bowl.
I saw this this morning.
This is amazing.
Because I've been listening to you.
You know, my job, basically, Joy, is to listen to the American public and then react.
And I have been told over and over again that the only reason New England's dynasty is happening.
It's not the genius of Belichick, is not the efficiency and greatness of Brady.
No, no, no, no, no.
It's due to the Buffalo Bills, the jets, and the dolphins.
Is that the reason this dynasty is taking place is because the AFC East is just terrible.
Miami's dysfunctional, the jets are dysfunctional, the bills are dysfunctional.
That is why everybody knows New England's no good.
Wait, that's crazy talk.
I'm looking down this morning, 96% of money wagered at the Mirage in Vegas is on the Patriots.
Are they playing the bills?
Are they playing the Jets?
Are they playing the dolphins?
Oh, it says here they're playing the L.A. Rams.
so you could bet on the Rams and yet you're not.
You're betting on the Patriots.
So maybe the AFC East is not the reason.
Let's be honest about this.
Fans think dynasties are created because of the dysfunction that surrounds them.
It gives them an opening.
But the Golden State Warriors, LeBron James,
Nick Sabin and the SEC and the Patriots actually create the dysfunction and never get credit for it.
Just take the Warriors.
The Lakers are now rumored to be getting rid of Luke Walton.
Another coach fired?
Dysfunction.
Houston Rockets brought in Carmelo Anthony, a desperate move to beat the Warriors.
Now he's out of town.
Lobb City with the Clippers.
Two great players, another really good player.
They're all now gone because they couldn't crack the Warriors code.
The warriors aren't winning because of dysfunction.
The warriors have created dysfunction.
For years and years, we talked about how bad the Eastern Conference was.
The truth was, after the decision LeBron made, there were 50 different coaches in the East.
He created that.
Isn't it ironic that LeBron leaves the Eastern Conference?
And all I've heard from all the fans in media this year, boy, the East is a lot tougher than it used to be.
No, it's not.
it's not tougher than it used to be.
LeBron left, and so everybody isn't freaking out and over-trading and over-firing.
Is that the Golden State Warriors and New England and LeBron in the East and Sabin in the South and college football never get credit.
They're not winning because of dysfunction.
Legends created.
Look what Amazon has done to retail.
Look what Uber has done to taxis.
By the way, a little mic drop by Tom Brady here a week out from the Super Bowl.
Might as well play that.
I can't thank you enough.
We're excited.
I hope you guys are excited.
And as Des said, let's let him hear it all the way down in Atlanta.
We're still here.
We're still here.
We're still here.
We're still here.
We're still here.
Oh, I forgot.
because of the Bills, the Jets, and the Dolphins, who, by the way, we looked it up last week,
in the last 18 years, if you took out the Bills Dolphin Jet Games against the Patriots,
how do those teams do against everybody else?
Here's the numbers.
They're all 500 teams.
They're not great.
They're not amazing.
They're not dysfunctional.
They're just a big bowl of average.
New England makes them look dysfunctional.
Coming up next, is it possible?
The Lakers are panicking.
That's coming up.
Sleep, and this is a bummer, but it can be a struggle for a lot of people.
Used to be for me, toss and turn all night.
Then I moved to a Casper mattress.
The folks there looked at what keeps people awake at night
and dreamed up the luxurious new Casper Wave mattress.
It's different from other premium mattresses.
It's advanced ergonomic system.
Actively aligns your body at 33 points, head to toe.

It's great.
Great to have you in today.
Joy Taylor joining us in 45 minutes from now where Colin was right, where Colin was wrong.
Peter King next hour as well.
We are packed today.
It is great to have you in.
Very excited for the Super Bowl.
I do.
I was driving in this morning and the Anthony Davis story broke.
So I'd like to address it again on a different front.
Anthony Davis signed with Rich Paul Clutch Sports September, LeBron's Group.
Check.
Next thing he had to do was announce, I want out of New Orleans.
He did that apparently yesterday.
Check.
And now let's have the Lakers getting this deal done, which my takeaway is they want to get it done
before the end of the year because Boston can't make a move now because of certain things
the NBA doesn't allow with trades.
So I think the Lakers will probably overpay a little now to get it done, which in the long
terms, you want everything you have to acquire a third player after LeBron and Anthony Davis,
because according to reports, Kyle Coosma has to be part of the deal for the Pelicans to like
it, and Coosman is a good player.
So you're going to have to get the next Coosma if you give them away.
Let me say this, though.
people know I like LeBron, and I've defended LeBron,
but I also think it's obvious.
He's not the easiest guy in the world on coaches.
He wanted Eric Spolstra out.
Pat Riley said, no, we're not.
He wanted David Blatt out.
They got rid of him.
And now, according to various reports, Jackie McMullen,
who is as respected as any NBA beat rider ever,
Jackie's been covering this league for four decades.
She's great.
Came out over the weekend and said,
there is tension in the Lakers building.
There's a lot of tension.
Quote, I think people are wondering about Luke,
even though Jeannie Bus, the owner came out strongly and said,
I want Luke to be here.
It's clear that LeBron's camp would prefer a coaching change,
and they're not too subtle about it.
That's Jackie McMullen, and if she talks, she's right.
She's as good as they get in this business.
So let me just ask you this.
Is it reasonable for me to say,
I think there's a little panic here?
Wasn't this the year the Lakers were going to quote,
figure it out with LeBron, take a look at the assets.
When 45, I predicted 48 wins, certainly not beat the Warriors, building blocks.
I remember Luke Walton saying, we've got LeBron for four years.
That certainly sounds like patience to me.
And the Lakers were counting on two things to be true throughout the course of this year.
LeBron would still easily be the best player in the year in the NBA.
I don't know.
He's not playing.
And the second thing was, people will want to play with LeBron.
Well, Kauai Leonard reportedly does not want to play with LeBron.
And Paul George chose Russell Westbrook over LeBron
and Kevin Durant and LeBron has been roundly mocked by people who are close to it.
And LeBron's hurt.
And everybody wants to play with him.
A little bit of panic?
I'm reading Jackie McMullen.
There's tension in the building.
Luke and LeBron are strained.
The young assets.
Lonzo Ball, hurt again.
Brandon Ingram.
Just a guy.
LeBron, worst injury of his career.
I'm not saying it's utter panic, complete chaos,
but there were a lot of things before LeBron got to Los Angeles
and then the minute he did that we consider to be givens.
He would right now be playing.
averaging 28 and be the best player easily in the world.
Hasn't played in a month and is not scheduled to play the next game either.
And frankly, lots of players according to various NBA executives, people, scouts,
don't all want to play with LeBron.
He is now going to be 35, coming off the worst injury of his career.
I mean, I thought, I listened, I thought this was the year.
You kind of sat back.
You won 45, 50 games.
You end up third in the West.
You win a playoff series, but you're not going to beat the Warriors.
What you don't want to do is freak out.
It's easier said than done, though.
It's Los Angeles.
It's the Lakers.
It's LeBron.
A lot of pressure even in a year that there's no expectations.
This is the entertainment capital of America.
Everybody moves to L.A.
In the entertainment field, actors, writers, athletes, producers, directors.
film stars, TV stars, and they think they're going to live in Beverly Hills.
And they end up mostly living in Venice or moving to Scottsdale.
It's not easy here.
There's a lot of things you've got to deal with.
And this move has not worked as precisely and exactly as it should have.
Lonzo Ball is hurt again.
Brandon Ingram is just a guy.
And if I'm the Pelicans, by the way, this morning, you think I'm going to do the Lake
a favor? Really? If I'm the Pelicans this morning, I'm pissed. Because LeBron's group,
Rich Paul's group, signed Anthony Davis knowing this was going to happen. I'm going to do
LeBron or anybody associated with LeBron a solid. If I'm the Pelicans, I can understand them
being bitter, empowered. We're not making any move until the Celtics have the resource.
and the ability to give us some of their assets.
I'm just saying, I'm not saying that or panic.
It hasn't quite worked out like we thought.
Here's Joy with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
Yeah, Los Angeles is a little different than Cleveland.
You can't control everybody the way.
Like, by the way, when LeBraw went to Miami,
Pat Riley's like, no, no, no.
Yeah, Miami's a little different than Cleveland.
Miami's like, no.
And L.A. is a whole other category.
Yeah, so, I mean, in Cleveland.
You can just tell the owner and the gym I want it because they don't have the power in the history.
But he went down to Miami and Pat Riley is like, no, no, no, no.
Eric's post was our coach.
You're going to have to deal with it.
And LeBron didn't like it.
I wonder if he does end up winning a championship here if that tune of the Cleveland Championship was the most important one will still be sung after all this.
So NKal Roby Coleman seems to feel a little invincible right now.
He wasn't called for the past interference in the NFC championship game, the call or non-call that everyone is still talking about.
He continues to give Tom Brady and the Patriots a lot of bulletin board material to work with.
He told Bleacher Report, age has definitely taken a toll.
He's definitely not the same quarterback he was.
He can still sling it, but he's not slinging it as much.
And sometimes it's not the sharpest.
Stick a dagger in them, pull it out, and let them leak slow.
You just kill them slowly.
That's how you do them.
Oh, great.
He then said the Rams can get to Brady, quote, all over the place,
which is quite an interesting statement considering that Brady's pretty much been untouched,
the entire postseason. I mean, this is playing right in the New England's hands, right?
I honestly don't get it. It's maybe it's just Sean McVey, just letting his guys be who they are.
But, I mean, there's a couple, for me, there's just a couple rules when it comes to playing the Patriots in big games.
One, make sure that you actually do touch Tom Brady. You have to make him uncomfortable.
Two, assume that Belichick is going to take away your biggest weapon offensively.
And three, don't give them bulletin.
more material. Yeah, those are the big three.
I should just write a book. You should write
a book called The Three Things to Be.
How to Be the Patriots.
Make Tom uncomfortable.
Right. They are going
to take away your best weapon, so have an
ulterior plan. Yes. And don't
talk trash. And don't talk trash. Yes.
And then also hope that Sabin
wins the championship that year, because
there's some weird correlation. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So we might be in bad shape there.
All right, so speaking of Brady, he said he wants to play until he's
45 and winning
another ring in his ninth trip to the Super Bowl.
at 41 wouldn't do anything to change that because in his own words,
here's the chance that Brady retires after Super Bowl 53.
Say it. I don't want to just sit there.
There's zero, yeah. There's zero. I've said that for a long time. I feel like I'm asked that a lot
and I feel like I repeat the same answer. I'm going to know. I'm going to know when the time's
right and I'm going to feel like, okay, you know, I've kind of had enough. I don't quite feel
like that yet. I feel like, you know, I've still made a lot of improvements and I still feel
like I can continue to do it at a championship level.
And I think that's, you know, where I was at before and that's still where I'm at now.
I don't even know why we're in the media, right?
Like I get fans saying stuff, but in the media there's a certain responsibility.
Not that we have to be 100% accurate, but fans look to us, I think, sometimes for context to put out fires.
Like saying Tom's going to retire after watching them against the chiefs and the chargers is just irresponsible.
Well, he looked, he's just.
I don't think anyone's saying he's going to.
retire, but if he wins this Super Bowl, there's something to the idea of walking out on top
of not having to see the deterioration of a superstar, of not having to see them, you know,
walk off a cliff just as far as their skills and talent goes, because that's generally how
it is. It's a quick job. But we're not close there. No, we're not close, but maybe,
maybe there's a feeling in him, or maybe we're all just wishing that this would end so we can
talk about something different. I don't know what it is.
I had no even thought about Tom Brady retiring.
I've given up on that.
Years ago I gave up with it.
He's going to retire.
When he says he's going to retire,
I don't understand this wishing and hoping for Tom Brady to retire.
He's shown no, what is this age you're talking about?
I'll say it again.
I watched Drew Breeze this year, and I saw fatigue with Drew Breeze.
When I watched Brady, I thought his best game of the year was against the Chargers.
So he was at his best late in the year.
When an experienced older athlete usually gets tired,
I thought Drew at the end of the year looked a little tired.
I thought Peyton Manning at the end of his career
looked better in September than October November.
I thought Peyton Manning looked tired.
And also just in general, guys, all athletes are playing later now.
There's more advanced training methods and rehab methods
and guys are investing in their bodies more and eating right.
Like it's not so far-fetched that they're going to play that late
and be able to perform at a high level.
41's the new 36.
Yeah.
Just is.
Finally, the Pro Bowl may soon move again.
Yesterday was the third straight year.
Orlando was the host of the Pro Bowl, but the turnout was just as bad as the weather.
And according to the Orlando Sentinel, there's a chance that it could take place elsewhere next season.
The report suggests the next two Pro Bowls can be played at the sites of the next two Super Bowl,
which would be Miami and Tampa.
I don't understand why they don't have the Pro Bowl at the site of the Super Bowl.
What was wrong with Hawaii?
I don't know exactly why they moved it from Hawaii.
Maybe they just wanted to make it more accessible to fans, so Orlando was a better place.
Every player I've ever talked to is like, oh, I always love my weak vacation in Hawaii.
Yeah, no, for players, it was great.
You bring your family, you get away.
There's not a whole lot of, like, responsibility.
There's probably more fan responsibility in Orlando because it's this more access where people in theory are going to come.
So Hawaii was kind of like an elite thing to go to.
Do you know Hawaii?
It was Hawaii in Vegas.
We're the highest rated NFL markets that didn't have a team.
to me, it was working.
Like, giving Hawaii the game.
Honolulu is the highest rated major city in America that didn't have an NFL team.
It was either Honolulu or Vegas.
Now Vegas will have a team.
I always thought it really created a kind of a unique market.
If you go to Hawaii, they are pouring Mai Tai's at 6 in the morning because those games start at 6 or 7 in the morning.
It is a huge island tradition.
I don't know why they butchered it.
Players loved it and the island loved it and it paid off.
I don't know.
There had to have been some, I'm sure, money logic behind moving it.
But I think they should just have it wherever the Super Bowl is if you're not going to have it in Hawaii.
Joy with the News.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Line News.
Well, we get him in house this week.
He played for a decade in the NFL, a multiple-time pro bowler.
He has a Super Bowl trophy.
One, just one, but it's a big fat one.
And his house in Minnesota, it's Greg Jennings.
We know come in studio.
It's so nice to have you here.
I know, man.
It feels like I haven't been here in a while.
I know.
You've been wearing sweaters in Minneapolis.
For the record, I figured that Saints blown call thing would blow over in about 48 hours.
We got lawsuits and billboards.
And what do you make of the fact that New Orleans, they're trying to hijack the Super Bowl?
I don't think they're trying to hijack the Super Bowl, but they feel like they should be there.
And rightfully so.
I mean, you're not going to get over something that you've prepared for.
You've worked so hard to get to.
And it just, it's in their minds, what they have to really overcome is, or really get over,
is the fact that the refs didn't just take this game from you.
You lost this game too.
Like, you still had opportunities to win.
You stopped them.
You deny them the opportunity to go down and score or put up points.
You still win.
You didn't do that.
This was not the final play of the game.
This was not the final play of the game.
So it's a team sport.
for a reason and controversy is a part of sports.
Were you with the Packers in 2009?
Yes.
Okay.
Okay.
So in 2009, the Saints got a call to beat your Packers and it kickstarted their greatness.
They were a joke before that.
So what people are forgetting?
What was the game?
Well, no, it was so it was, we were playing in the wild car game against the Arizona Cardinals.
And it was a shootout, 51, 45 Arizona beat us in overtime.
Yes, I remember that.
It was Aaron Rogers' first big playoff game.
Yes, and he drops back.
We got the ball in overtime to start overtime,
had an opportunity to win the game.
Aaron kind of threw a ball on the line drive.
We had a play design to get up on Antroar Roe
who was playing the safety, and I beat him.
He falls down, wide open.
Aaron just threw the ball on the line, excitement, whatever.
Missed it.
We have two more plays.
Third down comes.
He drops back.
Clearly gets grabbed.
in the face mask.
Yep. And he gets stripped sacked, picked up, ran in for a touchdown, we lose.
And we're like, where's the flag?
But at the end of the day, when we got on that plane and we went on the following year
to win the Super Bowl, we didn't so much harp on.
Now, we were disgusted at the lack of no call.
But we knew we had missed so many opportunities in that game to where we could have
beat that team, that team being the Arizona Cardinals. And then they go down to New Orleans and get
blown out, which even gave us more reasons. That's why we should have been down there.
Yeah. And I think your point is, if you go back to the Saints game, they had the ball in the red
zone twice in the first quarter and settled for field goals. The game could have been 14,
nothing, and it would have been over. This is just the way life works. And I've said this for years.
People in America, forget football. You got to blame the president. You're more successful
brother, your parents, your boss, if people fail, nobody ever looks in the mirror.
Mirror's still work in America.
Nobody wants to look at them.
And that's the reality of the Saints is you butchered red zones, two of them early.
You got a couple officiating breaks.
This game was yours.
You got the ball in overtime first where you were facing a gasped Rams defense and you
threw a pick.
Yep.
It's the way it works.
Okay.
So I was saying this, if you look at the Golden State Warriors, the West has gotten
increasingly dysfunctional since their dynasty started.
Daryl Morey's one of the best GMs in all of sports in Houston,
trades for Carmelo or acquires Carmelo,
and you're like, the hell are you doing?
Why?
To beat the Warriors.
Reportedly Luke Walton's on his way out of the Lakers.
Another coach?
Why?
Because they don't feel like they're close to the Warriors.
Lobb City was wildly fun in Clipperland for years.
They blew that puppy up.
Why weren't getting close enough to the Warriors?
Is that great teams create dysfunction?
Nick Saban is why LSU and Georgia and Florida and Tennessee keep running through coaches.
If Nick Saban wasn't there, they would have kept less miles.
He got fired because he couldn't beat Nick Saban.
He was winning 10 games a year.
So I'm saying where the Patriots is we have this feeling that bills, the jets, the dolphins are just dysfunctional messes.
But in the last 18 years, if you take out their games against New England, they're 500 teams.
The Patriots have made them look utterly dysfunctional.
Listen, I'm not saying I'm not saying the jets are highly functional, but they've been to two AFC champions.
championships in the last 12 years.
And the dolphins are always about 8 and 8.
They're not Cleveland.
They're not Tampa.
So I think the Patriots deserve credit for creating a lot of the mayhem.
To your point, these teams and the AFCEs, when they're not playing against New England Patriots, they're hard teams to beat.
Like, they're hard outs for any other opponent.
But it just so happens.
They're in the division with the best, the world champs.
And it's like that big brother that you know he's a bigger brother.
He's more physical.
He's a little smarter.
He's done it before you.
So you know his tricks of the trade and you try to use them against him.
But sometimes it works and you get him.
But when it really matters, he's going to beat you every time.
And that's the New Lincoln Patriots to the AFCEs.
But to everyone else, they're a formidable opponent.
Think about this, Greg.
I have a bunch of kids.
You have kids.
is that, and I tell my wife this, we have these discussions, that I am not kids, really, after about 12 years old, and certainly at 16 when they can drive, their peer group, their friends have a big say.
That's why it's very important the friends your kids have.
Yes.
Because they're going to have major control.
You as parents will not be at school with them.
You'll not be at the cool parties with them.
By about 16 years old, their peer group controls more of their thoughts than mom and dad.
They have a ton of influence.
So that's why you've got to keep your eye on who your kids are friends with.
And it's funny.
And I've said this before.
There's no way that all of your kids shouldn't be great.
You're a good dad.
You've got the good economy.
You've got you're just a wonderful family man.
Same with my kids.
But kids watch brothers, watch sisters, get insecure, get overconfident.
And that proximity to their brothers and sisters, to your point, can play with you psychologically.
There's the middle kid syndrome.
And so you are in a division family.
The Bengals, Browns, Raven Steelers are a family.
They don't even, when you prepare for a game, you know exactly what they're going to run.
And I think the Patriots, to your point, get in the head.
They do.
They do.
And quite honestly, they get in the head of all of the National Football League.
I've been on the opposite side.
And being in the National Football Conference versus the American Football Conference.
conference.
There's one team across the conference that you know if you have them on your schedule,
no matter who, where you have them, okay, man, because everybody does this.
You get the schedule, the schedule comes out, and you look at the schedule and you start
saying, okay, that's a win, that's a win.
Oh, that's going to be a tough one.
That might be a loss.
Patriots on everybody's schedule is typically, no one wants to say that's a loss,
but most people are going to say that's possibly a loss.
For the record, in your time in Green Bay, you were the Patriots of the NFC.
You don't think your Green Bay teams didn't create dysfunction in Chicago and Detroit?
No doubt about it.
I watched it.
No doubt about it.
They would overdraft pass rushers to get Farvin Aaron Rogers.
That was the name of the game.
How can we beat?
Look at Lovie Smith got to Chicago and said, we're going to beat the Packers.
like that was in press conference we're going to beat the packer like that's that was their focus
when i got to minnesota their primary focus was to beat the packers and i thought that was
so like what are we doing when i was in green bay it was we're going to win championships
now i'm over here and it's we're going to beat the packers whoa wait a minute that's that's
that's not enough smith got to a super bowl yeah and they fired him yes because it was
that he wasn't beating Green Bay in that.
Yes. And I mean, Lovie Smith,
I mean, he got Rex Grossman
to a Super Bowl.
Special. Pretty good.
Special. And I, and I remember the Lovie Smith teams
with a dysfunctional J. Cutler, tough outs.
But the one team they couldn't beat,
you. Yes. And so they ran out
Cutler, and they ran out Lovie Smith.
And I guess that's my point. You were in the Patriots
NFC. You created the dysfunction.
Everybody always said, well, you got the bears and the lions.
They were doing what Buffalo in Miami.
They overdraft.
How many times it's like, remember when Buffalo overpaid for Mario Williams,
a pass rusher?
Yes.
And they just spent a fortune on him.
It was all to get to Tom Brady.
Of course.
Whatever we can do, let's make it so that we can get to this quarterback and eliminate their
throne, their greatness.
By the way, Jared Goff, Northern Cal Kid, grew up idolizing Brady.
Brady grew up idolizing Joe Montana.
Any chance golf outplays Brady.
That's tough.
I'm going to just, I'm going to say no because of the longevity of Tom Brady and what he's been able to experience.
And what people, Joy, you made a good point.
Brady's not going anywhere.
He's not going to retire until he says, nope, I'm going to retire.
Yeah.
And the reason why I say no to Jared Gough is Brady's been hurt one time in his career.
It's amazing.
One time.
And he was young.
And it's 2008, and it was at the beginning of the season, and they still win 11 and 5.
He's only missed the playoffs twice since becoming a starter.
Like these things, he's never experienced losing.
So why would he say, yep, you know what, I am done?
Everyone says, well, Peyton Manning, he fell off the cliff.
I've said it.
Peyton Manning fell off the cliff.
Well, Peyton Manning had a severe injury that no one thought he would be able to come back from.
In Denver, he could not feel if the weather was under 40 degrees,
Peyton Manning couldn't feel two fingers on his throwing hand.
Like, that's a serious issue for a quarterback.
Tom Brady has never had to experience any of that.
And one last thing, he doesn't have that guy in his quarterback room
that the organization is looking at saying,
hmm, this is our Steve Young, this is our Aaron Rogers.
We have a draft pick that's coming up.
Oh, you know what?
because we've lost, we have a high enough draft pick, we can get an Andrew Luck.
They don't have any of that.
They traded him away.
They traded him away.
So why?
Yeah, I mean, New England this morning does not have a succession plan.
No.
So they're going to draft offensive linemen.
They're going to have 12 draft picks.
They're going to draft pick.
I mean, listen, this is not a great quarterback class.
New England's Belichick would be crazy not to build a team to protect Tom for two years.
Tom Brady is doing New England a favor saying, you know what?
You got until 40, I'm 45.
And then you have time to think about your future after me.
Up until 45, I'm your guy.
So I'm giving you that window of opportunity to research, do your due diligence, and bring in a guy when I'm saying that I'm done.
But you better protect me now because you got nobody in house.
So don't kid yourself.
If those 12 draft picks are to protect Tom,
I do think they'll draft a quarterback in the fourth, fifth, or sixth round.
They have to.
Have to.
Great, great seeing you.
Absolutely.
Great having you in this week.

Colin for a special offer great to have you in today Peter King next hour great stuff from
Greg Jennings Matt Barnes Bill Romanowski so the the you know the Saints continue to
give us their sob story according to a report over the weekend there is concern that four
of the officials assigned to last Sunday's game Saints Rams live in southern California
Yeah, by the way, both quarterbacks in the Super Bowl are from California.
The NFL network is in California.
Andy Reid's from Los Angeles.
Aaron Rogers is from California.
Pete Roselle, the former commissioner, was from Los Angeles.
It's a big state full of talented people.
There would be a crazy conspiracy if all four were from, you know,
Ann Arbor, Michigan, or Tyler, Texas.
But the fact that four of the many officials at the game are from, you know,
Los Angeles is because it's the second biggest city in America.
You ever been around?
I went skiing this weekend.
I sat on a lift chair multiple times with people from Los Angeles.
And then people from Dallas.
And then people from New York.
Because there's a lot of people in those three cities.
They're all over the country traveling.
I don't know.
This is very tinfoil hatish.
Yes, it is.
For the record, I understand fans, your job is to give us material like this.
I never hold the fans to the same level I hold the media.
My job, I am paid to go to sporting events.
You pay to go to sporting events.
You're fun and crazy and energetic and lively and obsessed and delusional and nutty.
You give us material.
I get it.
Thank you.
We can't be.
We have to add some nuance to it.
There should be a separation.
Never forget this.
The conspiracy before the Rams Saints game.
there was a petition going around online to not have Bill Vinovich referee it.
Because he had officiated eight Rams games since they came to L.A.
And they were 0 and 8.
Yeah.
So the conspiracy before the game was Ram fans thinking,
we're going to get hosed by Bill Venevich.
The conspiracy after the game is that Bill Vinovich guy was against us.
What's the common thread?
fans thinking there's conspiracies.
If there was going to be a conspiracy, and I said this for years defending the NBA,
you wouldn't do it in the Western Conference Finals.
If you were going to throw games, you'd do what Tim Donegie did.
You'd pick a Tuesday night, Denver against the Sixers, that nobody's watching.
You probably wouldn't do a Rams Saints game to throw, you know, a rigged game into the NFL.
The other thing is this idea that Roger Goodell should have strong,
defiant tribal opinions on this?
No, he shouldn't.
That would be called micromanaging.
Did the Major League Baseball Commissioner come out in 1995,
Royals, Cardinals, Don Deccinger, butcher to call it first?
Did Major League Baseball Commissioner rush out to have a press conference?
No, bad calls happened.
And did David Stern rush out and call a massive press conference years ago
when the Sacramento Kings got hosed by a number of bad calls against Kobe in the Lake?
curse. No, he didn't come out because bad calls happen. And in that Sacramento Kings game,
there were about 50 bad calls. They all went against the Kings. There was a bad call here.
It's not a job for a commissioner to appease goofy fans. Should he have had a comment on the
petition before the game? No, he shouldn't have a comment on petitions and controversy and
conspiracy theories after the game. That's not what you do. It's called micromanaging. My bosses
never tell me what to say on my show. That would be micromanaging. They hire.
me? They know that some days I'm really good and some days I'm not as good and some days I'm
stupid. But they don't come down and tell me and respond to every segment I do because they know
over the course of time for every 10 segments, seven will be really good, two will be okay,
one will stink. That's life. And you know as an NFL commissioner that you have a head of
commissioners and he will have strong tribal opinions when calls are butchered and they always are.
We had a World Series, Cardinals, Royals, butchered. We had the West.
Western Conference Finals, game sits in Sacramento.
Butchered.
And this call was butchered.
But it wasn't the last play of the game,
nor was game six Sacramento and Lakers last game of the series.
This game went to overtime in New Orleans.
Saints got the ball.
Win or shut up.
This is not a position for a commissioner to talk.
That's called micromanaging.
That's bad management.
Jumping in and having strong opinion.
to make sure that I can appease.
By the way, the adult in the room for the saints is Drew Breeze.
Drew Breeze came out, and this is why he's Drew Breeze, said this week on his Instagram,
I've spent the last week navigating the heartache and disappointment from the game,
some things within and some outside our control that caused us to fall short.
I refuse to let this bring us down, to let this create any negativity or resentment.
I embrace the challenge.
Oh, that's actually what adults say.
All right, we lost.
Some we could control.
some we couldn't.
Probably should have gotten touchdowns in the red zone.
We only got field goals.
We could control that.
Kind of butchered it.
Left with six points.
Should have been 14.
Wouldn't have had this concern.
And then the other thing, the officials,
gave us a few breaks, got hosed on that one,
couldn't control it.
Folks, anger comes from expectations.
If you expect a perfectly officiated game,
you're going to be disappointed.
If the call would have gone the other way of Saints fans,
there'd be no petition.
There'd be no petition.
Like there was before the game.
game from Rams fans.

This is The Herd.

We're on IHeart Radio.
We're on Fox Sports Radio.
We're on FS1.
Joy Taylor is joining me as we have a lively hour.
Colin Wright, Colin Wrong in a couple of minutes.
Peter King, Matt Barnes, joining us.
Joy, how are you today?
and a Monday. Great. What a start to the Super Bowl week, huh? Here we go. Big Anthony Davis,
Lakers. By the way, just giving you an update on the story. We'll talk more about it this hour.
In September, Anthony Davis, a star for the Pelicans, signed with clutch sports. They represent LeBron.
Check. Second part of this is tell everybody you're not resigning with New Orleans. Check. He did that today.
So that's where we are.
And with that, let's do it.
We do it every Monday.
Colin right.
Colin wrong.
Where Colin was right?
This is the Anthony Davis thing.
We told you in September, we created the LeBrow meter because at that moment it was
understood that Anthony Davis was somehow some way going to figure out a way to move
Los Angeles.
Anthony Davis also said back in September, it's not about money.
It's about legacy and winning.
So this is something
I almost feel guilty
taking this as a right because it's so obvious.
People are going to freak out this morning.
This is terrible for the NBA.
But, you know, increasingly in the NBA
legends, all-time talents like
Durant, LeBron, and Anthony
Davis want to win games,
not just make a bunch of money because they're already
making a ton of money. So we told
you this was going to happen. It's happening.
And this morning,
a little bit of a bombshell where
Anthony Davis came out and said,
I want out of New Orleans.
It's not about money.
I want to win.
And so it begins.
Where Colin was wrong.
You know, I've been critical of Baker Mayfield,
but a story dropped last week by Seth Wickersham at the other place
detailing the utter dysfunction in the locker room
and the organization in the franchise with the Cleveland Browns.
And Baker Mayfield should not only win rookie of the year,
he should win therapist of the year.
Listen, I've said before, I think he's going to be a good player.
I don't see him as transformational like an Andrew Luck or an Aaron Rogers.
But man, egos everywhere in the building, a coaching change, Haley and Hugh Jackson,
porn in the building.
Oh, good hell, it was just a disaster.
And Baker's chutzpah and his energy and his sort of chip on his shoulder was clearly a huge component
to make sure this puppy didn't completely derail during the season.
so props to him.
Where Colin was right?
Listen, I've been saying this for years.
Russell Wilson is the most under-respected player quarterback of my lifetime.
The second-best fourth quarter ranking in the history, QBR and the history of the league, is Russell Wilson.
Yesterday he was the only quarterback for the NFC that could do anything.
I mean, when you put him up against Trabisky and Dak, did you see the gap in talent?
Did you see it?
I mean, Russell Wilson, people fall in love with flashes of brilliance.
And Russell Wilson will give you some of that too.
But for six years, mostly with mediocre receivers, a hit and miss running game and a bad on line,
this guy wins games, wins close ones, and gets his team to the playoffs.
And yesterday, just the gap between him and the other NFC quarterbacks.
For the record, he wasn't initially a pro bowler.
Despite the year he had, which was great, he didn't initially get to this game.
It had to be other guys stepping aside for him to get in, which continues why the Pro Bowl's a mess.
where Colin was wrong.
I thought that bad call in the Saints Rams game would blow over, you know, after a couple
days.
We're eight days removed.
There's lawsuits.
There's billboards.
There's conspiracy theories.
It's T-shirts.
It's everybody's talking about it, including us.
I mean, people forget that in 2009, Farve and the Vikings played the Saints.
Saints got to the Super Bowl.
One of the worst calls that year was the Saints hitting Farve low, him throwing a pick.
Saints getting the ball and there was no call
in the NFL admitted it was kind of a bad call.
Colin, prepare for the rest
of your life with this call.
It wasn't social media
at the level it is right now.
This is going to be played over and over again
for the rest of eternity.
It's embarrassing.
It just is.
It's what's going to happen.
All right.
Where Colin was right.
We told you, Russell Westbrook would age poorly.
Guards that are hyperathletic
and have to drive to the basket to
because they can't score because they can't shoot age poorly in this league.
Paul George is now officially, easily the best player on the team.
They're on a five-game winning streak.
He's on fire, shooting 54% on threes.
Paul George is now the guy that gets the ball in the fourth quarter.
Paul George is now the guy they want to have the ball the coaches dial-up plays for in the
fourth quarter.
Westbrook yesterday.
What a shock.
Five for 20.
His plus minus was minus 11, the worst on the entire roster.
Russell Westbrook.
has been replaced, is aging poorly.
I still think Paul George, who is in MVP consideration.
I'm not sure Westbrook should even be considered an All-Star,
but what is happening is what we thought would happen,
is the hyper-athletic point guard who can't shoot,
like all hyper-athletic point guards that can't shoot, would age poorly.
And the gap now between Paul George and Westbrook is growing by the week.
Where Colin was right?
Well, we told you what the players in the,
the NFL would be rooting for the Rams because of the free agent aggressiveness and the trades
that the Rams did is good for players.
And Levy and Bell last week was the first player to acknowledge via Twitter, hey, this Rams
thing is the way to do it.
We were a little ahead of this.
We said, just don't kid yourself, this is the way players wanted to work.
You get drafted, you go to a place, and if they don't respect you, they don't pay
what they should or it doesn't go well, you go on the market.
but for years and years in the NFL, the bad teams went into free agency.
But the Eagles and the Rams last two years have gone big into free agency and trades,
and it has paid off.
By the way, Amari Cooper to the Cowboys paid off.
So Labian Bell acknowledged what we talked about for the last couple of weeks.
The Rams story is really a great, almost NBA-level model for NFL stars.
And Levy and Bell said, yep.
This is it, folks.
This is the way it should be done.
Where Colin was wrong.
You know, John Goulet, I have always defended,
the coach you hate, Jason Garrett of the Cowboys.
But yesterday in an All-Star game with no tackling allowed,
he scored seven points, and they didn't score until the fourth,
and Jason Garrett was the coach,
and he has the creativity of a paperweight,
and maybe Scott Linehan wasn't the only problem,
because this was awful.
I know it rained in stuff, but it rains all the time.
And that NFC performance,
Under Jason Garrett, seven points, all-star game where you can't mostly tackle was debilitating.
It was really, really bad.
Where Colin was right.
Oh, John Wall got hurt he's out for the year.
The Wizards are better without him.
Again.
John Wall left for the year.
They're nine and six without him.
They were 10 games under 500 with him.
That's because nobody likes John Wall.
His teammates don't like him.
His coaches don't like him.
They'd love to trade him.
By the way, you never see John Wall hanging.
out with the other stars in the NBA.
He's a doesn't get a guy.
He's a kind of sort of committed guy.
The better player on this team has been for years, Bradley Beal.
Great body, totally committed, high basketball IQ, people around the league like him.
Bradley Beal is and should be the franchise guy here.
People want to play with Bradley Beal.
The Wizards, once again, are better without John Wall.
Where Colin was right?
Jeff Darlington, respected longtime NFL reporter, sat down with Tom Brady, and Tom said this.
Is there any chance that this is your last game?
Zero.
Say it.
I don't want to just say it.
There's zero, yeah.
There's zero.
I've said that for a long time.
I feel like I've asked that a lot, and I feel like I repeat the same answer, but no one wants to believe me.
Listen, the best I've seen Tom Brady play in two years was the Charger game.
Drew Breeze looked old in the last month.
Brady's never looked better.
And I will tell you this, if you believe the reports that Brady wanted Garoppolo out,
and they did trade him, and if you believe the reports that Brady has a very close relationship with Bob Kraft,
which I know to be true, why would he retire and leave the Patriots with no secession plan?
That's not what you would do to somebody, Robert.
Robert Kraft, who you have great admiration for.
I know that Brady and Belichick don't always see the eye to eye.
But just think about it at this level.
If they got rid of Garapolo and Brady wanted him out to some degree,
and that's the stories that are out there, then Tom got his way.
He wouldn't hose the owner who did him a solid two years later and leave the Patriots
without a succession plan.
It makes no sense.
not the least of all Patriots have 12 draft picks
for their five offensive linemen minimum return
and because they have no succession plan for Brady
they're going to draft to protect Tom Brady
there is absolutely zero chance
he is retiring win or lose after this Super Bowl
good to have you and Peter King's right around the corner
he's in Atlanta for the Super Bowl
very exciting times, very exciting times.
And again, once again, if you're just joining us today, Anthony Davis came out, step two, step one was signing with clutch sports, check.
Step two was coming out and saying, I'm not staying in New Orleans.
Step three is the Lakers trying to get this done before the end of the season because the Celtics can't trade for him because of NBA restrictions until the season's over.
so the Lakers don't want to go toe to toe to
with Boston on asset for asset.
They'd get crushed in this deal.
So expect the Lakers to try to make a deal in the next 10 days.
Not saying it's going to happen,
but I think they'll overpay to appease LeBron
to get it done, to get him in the building.
And then at the end of the season,
they got a bunch of one-year contracts that'll move.
They'll go out and get a third player
because I think they're going to have to include Kyle Kuzma,
according to reports in this deal.
Peter King around the corner.

Without Luca and Austin Reeves, I got to manipulate the game.
We get a player's perspective on the challenges of the playoffs.
I think Joker's going to be exhausted this series

he has to really guard guys like Nas Reid.
He has to guard Julius Randall.
And then he has to give us everything he gives us on the night-to-night basis on offense.

And with that, NBCSports.com, football morning in America by Peter King.
He's joining us live from the Super Bowl via the Coward Global Satellite Network.
So you interviewed Sean McVeigh at some ungodly hour as part of your column this week.
I don't know.
You drink a lot of coffee, so I'm sure you're all.
okay with getting up at three in the morning, but Sean McVey at four in the morning. Very few people
see him then. Was he as sharp as he always is? No question about it. I said that in my column
today, Colin, that I met him at 4.10 a.m. insane standard time. I mean, he just, he likes to be at
work at 5 o'clock. I mean, just like all of us, don't we all love to be at work at 5 o'clock?
But, you know, Colin, this is what was interesting. I asked him, I said,
what would you be doing if I wasn't in the car?
And he said, probably a book on tape.
I'm listening to a real good one now.
Grid Iron Genius by Mike Lombardi.
I'm learning about two of my favorite coaches, Bill Walsh and Bill Belichick.
And so, I mean, you know, he's not one of these guys who's going to put on top 40
or going to listen to the new Jay Z hit.
You know, he's going to take that 35 minutes to the office to learn something.
And that was pretty impressive about that ride.
Not only that I learned something, I learned a lot of things about how he works and how his brain power works.
And quite honestly, Colin, about how democratic he is in the process of coaching his team.
I was at a soccer game this year, actually, in Los Angeles, and I ran into his punter.
And really good guy.
And he was a soccer fan.
So we're sitting there talking, having a beer.
And I asked him about Sean McBay and kind of the secrets of it.
And he said, you know, he's got a little player in him.
You know, the way he kind of talks like a player sometimes.
He really connects with players.
And what, I mean, your thoughts about that, because I've heard that now on two or three different occasions from coaches or players, he's different than the other guys.
Colin, when he was a high school senior right here in Atlanta, he went to the sidelines at a key moment of the game, and he basically asked his head coach if they could run a different play than the coach wanted him to run.
And the head coach let him run the play.
It was a naked bootleg.
He was the quarterback.
McVeigh was.
and he scored a touchdown to win a high school tournament game.
So I want you to watch this play you're seeing on your screen right now.
The reason that this play, which Troy Aikman called his Jared Goff's best pass of the game,
if you run that replay one more time from that exact angle,
what you're going to see is Brandon Cooks making an outcut toward the sidelines.
The original play, you watch Brandon Cooks go up, now he goes out.
And that play Brandon Cooks was supposed to go in,
before this play, Jared Goff had told Sean McVeigh on the sidelines, I'd rather have cooks go out
because I think there's going to be too much traffic in here.
I don't want to layer the ball over Cooks, I want to fire it to him.
And McVey goes, well, not what I would call, but I trust you.
Let's run it that way.
And McVeigh told me on Friday, that is a perfect example of what I like to do.
I want my players to understand that I'm going to listen to them.
and if they make sense with what they want to do, I'm absolutely going to consider it.
This was an example of why players love playing for Sean McVeigh.
By the way, he has faced Bill Belichick before, right?
Yes.
In 2015, he faced Bill Belichick, and they got killed.
They were losing 27 to 3 in the last minute when Washington got a garbage touchdown.
And he told me on that day that Bill Belichick, that Bill Belichick.
Belichick and Matt Patricia took him to the woodshed.
And there's no question in my mind that he's going to have learned a lot from that particular day that you're looking at right now.
There he is with Kirk Cousins.
That's one of the longest days of Sean McVeigh's coaching life.
It's the only time in the five years as a coordinator or head coach, he's faced Belichick until this coming Sunday.
By the way, he and Belichick have a texting relationship?
Yeah, he told me that after a lot of their games this year,
Belichick would text him. He said he sent me a great text after he beat Minnesota on that Thursday night
about how much he really loved how explosive their offense was.
So, yeah, they got a pretty good relationship, which I didn't know before I met him.
You know, I'll tell you, everybody is talking about Belichick against McVeigh, old genius, new genius.
I get it. Here is what I'm looking at.
Josh McDaniels has in the last couple of weeks taken apart Gus Bradley and then took a part Bob Sutton.
And both those coordinators the week before were credited with brilliant game plans.
Gus Bradley against Lamar Jackson, Sutton against Andrew Luck.
Wade Phillips tends to be a this is what I do guy.
I don't change a lot.
This is what I do.
Well, Josh McDaniels has taken apart.
two coordinators who generally are,
this is what I do, guys.
I think the Wade Phillips,
Josh McDaniel battle,
this is where I really favor New England.
Wade is kind of a,
this is my defense.
Here's what it is.
That, I think,
worries me about the Rams this week.
You buy into that?
Well, consider this about Josh McDaniels.
As you were talking, Colin,
before I came on the air,
about why doesn't New England have a name?
Why don't they have a name?
Oh, the name is Brady or the name is Belgian, whatever.
They don't have a steel curtain.
They don't have any of this.
But you know what they have?
They have on both sides of the ball.
The reason they don't have a nickname, in my opinion,
is that on both sides of the ball,
every week, every game plan is a snowflake.
Josh McDaniels is totally non-predictable.
How about coming out and running the ball
as much as he did on third downs early in the game?
against Kansas City.
The crazy thing is, this was not thought to be one of the best offensive lines in the league
in mid-season.
And they've had 179 snaps this postseason.
Tom Brady's been sacked zero times and knocked down twice.
And so that's what I mean.
Josh McDaniels figures out each week exactly what he should do to that particular opponent.
So that's why I have no idea what we're going to see out of the Patriots on all.
offense. You saw last week, hey, Rex Burkhead, big star,
Rex Burkhead might touch the ball twice in this whole game. So every week it's going to be
different and that's what Josh McDaniels wants to leave on Wade Phillips's head right now going
into this game. You can't predict what we're going to do because we do something different
every week. Okay, here's where you and I disagree. Years ago, it was about what 2002,
the NBA officials, Sacramento and the Lakers, went into the Western Conference finals. It was
game six. I don't believe in conspiracy theories. It was a horribly officiated game and the
Lakers got virtually every call. But it was game six. And in game seven, the Kings were awful.
They were nervous and anxious and the Lakers won. But David Stern did not come out and comment on the
officiating. His feeling was, I've got a head of officials. I'm not going to micromanage.
I understand people want Goodell to comment. But that's why you have, you know,
In fact, one of the criticisms I've had of Goodell is why is he in the punishment business?
He should have a committee for these players who make mistakes in their private lives.
If Goodell comes out and comments on the bad call in New Orleans,
there's nothing he can say that appeases Saints fans.
They're just going to attack him.
You disagree.
You want him to talk.
Why?
Colin, you know, my whole life, the way I don't know,
I don't mean to make this sound, you know, schoolboy-ish,
But, you know, when I made a mistake, my father said, you stand up, you accept responsibility,
and you say it's never going to happen again.
And, you know, sometimes, of course he can't do anything about it.
The game is over.
You know, a horrible call influenced the outcome of this game.
There's nothing you can do.
But there's something about being responsible, about doing the right thing, about saying we screwed up,
and we're going to do everything in our power to make sure it never happens again.
I know that's not going to make you happy, but instead they've been hiding.
And Colin, for years, I went back to the playoff game of the Giants and 49ers in 2003.
They made a 60-word statement the next day because the wrong team probably won that game.
The 49ers, 3938, on the last play of the game, a horribly miscalled interference call.
And so the only point I'm making here is if you are going to stand up when Bobby Wagner makes a game,
influencing play on a Monday night in Seattle a month or so ago against the Minnesota Vikings.
If you're going to do that and come out the next day and say, hey, we screwed up, we did this.
Why then are you hiding when the play is a mega play that may have sent the wrong team to the Super Bowl?
Good thoughts. Peter King, NBCSports.com, football morning in America.
I can hear the buzz.
He got a haircut, I was told, just for our show.
It was very polite of you, Peter.
How do you like it, Colin, though, really?
He looked very professional.
You look like you cover the NFL wisely and smartly.
Thank you.
Thank you, Peter.
Good talking to you.
Yeah, I mean, listen, his feeling is they've talked about officiating before,
step to the mic and talk about it.
You know, I tend to think is when people demand stuff,
I am just, my personality is I'm not giving anything to anybody that demands something.
If you ask for something, I'm more than willing to oblige.
But when I hear, you know, New Orleans fans and demanding,
in the media is demanding in my takeaway is
David Stern had a game. You forget this. Some of you
20-year-olds don't remember this. That Sacramento
Kings, L.A. Lakers game
was, I mean, I'm not kidding you. It was the
firestorm of the NBA season. Every call
went to the Lakers. Now, like the Saints
game, it wasn't the last game. It was game six. And in game seven, the
Kings were terrible. And the Lakers did
what the Lakers often doing big games. They shot the ball
well and they won. And Sacramento did what they
often do well, do in big games.
They choked. But it was
as big as this. And I'm not kidding.
It was the center of the sports universe
for an NBA season.
And the NBA didn't, you know,
stand up and say,
ah, this is bad a fish.
I could see if it was just the media
yelling for it because who are we.
But it is the fans
that is your customer.
And I mean, I agree with
him. It's not, it's not so much
about micromanaging or souping down
to a level. It's just sometimes
people just want to be heard.
I mean, that's all there is to it. It was the wrong
call. Yeah. So, I mean, imagine
if they had just come out and gave a statement,
it would at least have appeased
all this outrage. Can you imagine if I had
to have a statement every time I screwed up as a parent?
I'd be in the statement business.
I mean, yeah, you do, I'm sure. I'm sure
you do have to have a statement to your kids when you
screw up. You know what my statement is? See this
roof? You can
sleigh out in the street.
See that bowl of pasta? That dog
out in the corner's not making it for you.
Well, I don't know.
Maybe I wouldn't be a good commission.
Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So Bill Belichick can't remember the name of a single social media app,
or at least he pretends like he doesn't.
He's being a little coy there.
And we just heard Bill Belichick talking, I mean, Peter King on Belichick,
talking about Sean McVeigh and they're texting.
Well, according to McVeigh, this season,
he said this season he has basically text me up after every one of our games.
After we beat Minnesota in September, he texted,
man, you guys are really explosive and impressive and fun to watch.
Congratulations, keep it rolling.
Look at that.
Oh, I have so many feelings about this.
Why?
What's your feeling?
Okay, first of all, this just kills the whole, like,
Lord of Darkness image that Belle Belichick has.
And it's also, like, there's,
where's the fun rivalry storyline that is the main storyline behind this Super Bowl?
This is, like, Doff versus Brady.
like there's some sort of animosity there.
The only animosity in the Super Bowl
is people just being tired of seeing the Patriots.
I mean, I'm sure there's some fans around the league
are like, oh, L.A. fans are very casual.
Yeah, the team just got here.
So there's not going to be
hordes of people in the street screaming and hollering,
banging the chest over the Rams. They're still
trying to decide if they want to be a Rams fan
or a Chargers fan at this point.
Or stick with the Raiders who are leaving California.
So this is like the one thing.
It's like the young guy, the hip guy,
the player-friendly guy versus
the old cranky
hoodie wearing coach and now it's gone.
There is none.
It doesn't even exist.
Can't even pretend it.
He just squashed it.
Like we're besties.
He texted him congratulations after the game.
Well, when Durant and LeBron
were battling, they were buddies.
Now there's a little more tension.
But by and large,
coaches and players,
it's not the 70s and 80s.
Everybody has the worst.
I mean, come on.
Save that for after the game, at least.
College is different.
Auburn and Alabama will hate each other forever.
But most of the time, I think Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh probably both realize they have great jobs.
They still have their jobs.
They're getting contract extensions.
I don't think it exists in pro sports.
I think everybody understands if you're in the NBA or the NFL or Major League Baseball, you're all winning.
So I create, you know, college has the rivalries.
But pro sports doesn't have rivalries.
I tend to agree with you that there are far less rivalries than there used to be.
but this was just a dagger
in an entire storyline
for this week. It's gone.
Done.
I'm the only one that cares about that
because I'm in the content business,
but thank you for ruining that.
All right, so Julian Edelman
performed his duty as a Patriots veteran
in the AFC championship game
in a couple ways.
He came up clutch in the fourth quarter
in overtime after making two pretty big errors
earlier in the game.
Then afterwards, he gave some veteran wisdom
to rookie Sony Michelle.
Edelman had some words from Michelle
about the moment he was enjoying,
the Pats climbing or clinching their Super Bowl ticket.
He said, this is cute.
We win that next one.
That's where the real fun is.
That's where you'll always be a champion.
This is cute.
This is awesome.
Don't get me wrong.
But the next one, let's go.
So he basically said, simmer down.
You won an AFC championship game.
That's nice.
It's cute.
The Super Bowl is the one where you really celebrate.
Yeah, I mean, it's almost like in college.
If you win the Big Ten or if you win the SEC, that's awesome.
That's your first step.
But if you're a really big boy program and you go and get smoked in the bowl game,
then it's a crappy off season.
Like you want to win the final game.
Well, it's also, I think, a big part of the Patriots mentality
because they've been there so much that this is just another game.
I think Greg Jennings talked about it.
Like, he wasn't nervous in the Super Bowl
because you just treat it like another game.
If you treat it like the Super Bowl,
which I'm sure if you're a rookie, that's hard not to do,
then you do get nervous and you do make mental errors.
Whereas if it's just, this is just part of your routine,
yes, it's a big game, but every game is a big game.
Then you don't get caught up in the lights and the moment
and all of that, which I think it's hard to do
even for a veteran.
Finally, the Raiders might be finding some clarity
on their quarterback situation. According to
Peter King, there's lots of suspicions that
they will take a quarterback high. They've got
three first round picks and
not trade Derek Carr.
So, as one personnel guy
told me, this is according to Peter King, the Kansas
city model of having a young guy
learn under a willing veteran as Patrick Mahomes
had with Alex Smith could be tempting.
Now, Smith is a special case. He's generous
to a fault, so not sure a car would be that willing to
help a young kid take his job.
I still don't think Derek Carr is a guy I'd let go of.
Like, I just, this idea that Derek Carr can't win you a bunch of games, you know who Derek
Carr reminds me a lot of, honestly, Tony Romo, is that when I watch them play, neither has a
huge arm but can make the throws.
Both are pretty ad livers, but good ad livers, but are better from the pocket.
You know, I mean, Tony Romo never quite got the next level love.
Derek Carr's had good seasons, but never gets the next.
If you think you're going to go find Derek Carr in this league, you're out of your gourd.
He's a really talented guy.
I think he is.
And I think he's taken a lot of the criticism for the state that the Raiders are in right now.
And that's what happens when you're the quarterback.
You get all the blame.
You get all the praise.
It's how it works.
But I don't see him as an Alex Smith type of guy who'd be willing to take a young guy under swing.
And not, listen, that's, I have no problem with that.
training someone to take over your job.
Forget it.
It's a very rare case where you find someone who's really willing to do that
and understanding of that situation.
And Derek Carson's a good guy, but he doesn't seem like that kind of guy.
Derek Carr should not try to help somebody replace him.
No.
And more than anything, you talk about this with Dak,
Derek Carr is a stabilizer in a situation that is absolutely chaotic.
You don't even know where you're going to play next year.
Quit worrying about the quarterback.
Put some solid pieces around him and figure out where you're going to
actually play football next year before you start talking about taking one of your first-round draft picks on a quarterback
when you have a quarterback.
If this company bought in somebody and wanted me to tutor him, you know what I do?
I lock that kid in the closet and say, I have no idea where he went.
I don't know where he went.
You lost him.
Yeah, Nick Wright was out here.
I sent him to New York.
Get him out of here.
I don't want anybody replacing me.
I got kids going to college.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Ly News.
Bill Romanowski on our last hour, Romo is always fun to have.
Coming up next, Matt Barnes, Anthony Davis, going to be a Laker.
Matt Barnes, live in studio with some thoughts on that.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app.

Radio icon into the code. Heard, H-E-R-D. Matt Barnes here, a decade and a half in the NBA.
Want a title with the Warriors?
All right. So here we are. This morning, I'm driving to work.
And the story drops, which I don't think surprised anybody.
The first step for Anthony Davis was to sign with clutch sports, Rich Paul.
And that made us think, all right, all right.
He's joined up with the bronze guy.
The second step, though, is now for the player, and this is hard for the player to go, I want out.
You're going to get booed.
players can never win.
Carmelo Anthony was totally honest in Denver.
I love you, I want out.
They booed him.
LeBron James didn't tell anybody in Cleveland.
They hated him.
Players can't win.
So first of all, Anthony Davis, the player.
Matt, do you like him?
Love him.
And I definitely respect the move about, like you said,
it's a hard thing to do,
but you have to respect it from a standpoint.
Now you've told the organization, okay,
there's no hope.
Don't plan on building around me.
It gives the organization a chance to obviously be frustrated
and probably mad, but then, okay,
Now we've got to look at from a business standpoint.
We've got to take our feelings out of it because we know we're losing.
Part of we're going to go down is one of the best players ever.
What's next?
What can we get for them?
What can we do?
How can we change things up?
So I definitely respect the fact that although tough, he came out and said clear his day,
I'm not going to resign.
So, you know, make a move.
Listen, fans can hate this, but it should be noted.
When you give the team a heads up,
this is what Paul George did to the Pacers.
and the Pacers got some good pieces in return.
They got it.
Absolutely.
They got it.
Yes.
So you're much better off giving your team a year heads up and your general manager can make moves.
Now let me ask you this.
I don't think the Lakers is necessarily, could be not necessarily the best place to win a title.
I think if he went to Boston, the East is easier.
He'd be arguably the best player in the East.
Boston's got, I think, a better head coach perhaps and a better roster.
would you still, if you were Anthony Davis, you've been a Laker, choose the Lakers?
I think the lure of L.A. is a monster, and I think that some can never be, that's something that can never be downplayed.
Hollywood, Matthew Johnson, LeBron.
It's really never been more attractive, you know, for someone.
I mean, the Shack and Kobe era has come and gone, but that was a very attractive era now.
But, you know, they're on the brink of, you know, thinking they have something with LeBron, a bunch of talented young pieces.
And you add an Anthony Davis, and that's going to put you down.
definitely in contention in the West.
Now, definitely what you said is true about going to the Celtics.
Really, it's only a two or three team wage out there with the West.
Any team, any year can get hot, case in point, different than this year.
Like I said, LA, the LA factor.
And I know he spends a lot of offseason time out here.
He's always in LA.
So it's the worst kept secret in the league.
Right.
I mean, the writing's been on the wall for a little bit.
Like you said, he signed with clutch sports a while ago.
LeBron comes out and says how much you would love to play with AD,
and AD kind of downplays his feelings.
and, you know, it doesn't really comment.
It's not a big deal to them.
But all deep down knowing that, okay, this is probably definitely a destination I would like to take a look into.
Okay, so if you had, let's say, according to Brad Turner, who covers the Lakers for the L.A. Times,
to make this deal happen, the Lakers would have to give up Lanzo, the very talented Kyle Kuzma, Zubach, their big center.
They like playing well last couple weeks, and the number one pick.
So that means it would be LeBron.
It would be Anthony Davis and say, you know, Brandon Ingram.
How good a team is that?
I think the ability to get these one-year deals now with these proven veterans is good.
I think the Lakers have done that this year in Rondo and Lance Stevens
and finally giving Michael Beasley a chance to play.
I love that.
Javelle McGee.
So there's these vets out here that you can fill in roster spots and do some stuff with.
To me, Kuzma is probably the one guy I would try to keep the hardest, not downplaying Ingram or Zoe.
if Magic can somehow keep Kuzma and pick up AD and then build around that.
Now that's different.
That team I like.
Yeah, absolutely.
Because I need to win a championship, this is what makes the warrior so lethal,
that Clay Thompson can drop 32.
Anyone can drop 40 on that team.
Okay.
The bottom line is, Kuzma has shown an ability on more than one night.
Ingram has not to drop 28 to 34 points.
Go get it.
I love Kuzma.
He's a dog and he needs to work on D.E.
defense and rebound only a little bit more, but I think that comes from maturity and age in this league and understanding what exactly his role is.
But I think I said the last time I'm here to have Kuzma's the third option is a blessing.
That's a championship team.
Absolutely.
Okay.
Luke Walton, and again, I am not reporting this.
It was reported.
Jackie McMullen, who I think, you know, Jackie, if you've been around this league, she's a veteran.
She's very formidable.
If she writes it, it's true.
She said there's tension in the building.
LeBron's peeps want Luke Walton out.
Listen, I think it's fair to say
LeBron can be very demanding of his coaches.
He wanted Spolstra out reportedly, and Pat Riley said,
no, we like him a lot.
David Blatt got moved, many said it was LeBron's camp.
I didn't get it verified, but that was the story out there.
What do you make of Luke?
Is he Matt the right guy?
I think Luke is definitely a great basketball mind.
you know, when I played there, he and Phila were always talking about strategy and X's and O's,
and Luke was right there in the mix.
I think Luke was getting a bad rap because obviously the Lakers head coach is probably the hottest seat in professional sports.
From day one, I think he knew his days were ticking.
So if you don't turn this around and win a championship, you're going type situation.
So the camp situation you speak of is funny, you know what I mean?
Because it was all about LaVar last year, and I think Magic pulls.
an OG car like you know you keep running your mouth and your son is out there you haven't heard
nothing from LeVar so usually usually camps don't hold weight but when this camp um speaks
considering rich Paul is in this camp and rich Paul has Anthony Davis and rich Paul you know has a voice
now with that so nor like I said normally camps you don't care what camps say but you kind of have to
listen to what this camp is talking about and and if it's either Luke or AD Luke is going to be a
casualty of war because you're pretty much going to do anything you can to get Anthony Davis
player you know I always heard players like Luke
Luke is a great coach's player
you know a teammate of mine friend of mine
like I said I think it's just he's getting a bad rap
I don't know now whether that's
LeBron played with him in Cleveland
maybe guys didn't respect his playing
as a player because I know a lot of guys
you know look at that kind of stuff but as a coach
and as a basketball mind you know you don't
so much about coaching now is not so much
ex andos is about relating to your players
thank you and this is a new generation
that the best
Steve Kerr.
The best X and those coaches really don't have a place in the league anymore because you have to be able to accommodate your players.
You have to be able to get along with your players.
You have to be able to deal with a bunch of crazy different personalities now.
So it's not so much about coaching in X&O.
It's about you need a coach that can relate to these younger players in this new generation.
And I think Luke is one of those guys.
It's a very interesting point.
You know, years ago baseball used to be so much about strategy.
And then Joe Tori, who had a losing record, went to the Yankees.
and the Yankees loaded the roster full of a lot of personalities.
And it was about that time where managers that got along with players were better managers.
Joe Tori was the first one where it wasn't about the X's and O's.
Joel could deal with Arod, could deal with Jeter, could deal with, you know, I mean.
And I think you're seeing that more and more.
I think even in the NFL, Matt, to your point, this past off season, Belichick had to scale back and treat Tom Brady like a grownup.
The athletes now have 100 million networks.
Because, I mean, their value, what they're being paid first and foremost,
and then how their voice travels more than anybody else in the franchise now.
These franchise players, you know, their voices are bigger than the franchises alone.
They're not bigger than their franchise, but their voices carry.
You know what they say is on headlines in every talk show, you know, in America.
So it's really about finding a coach that can relate.
Like I said, I know Luke is a player's coach.
He's someone that can relate.
But when the camps start speaking in such a powerful camp as LeBron's camp,
You know, the clock is ticking.
But one good thing that, you know, we pointed on the show earlier today,
he's got Jeannie in his corner.
Jeannie Bus has been pro-Luc.
Jeannie is in.
Jeannie knows the game very well.
And to have her in your corner is a great thing, you know.
So I hope he gets a chance, especially if they're able to land AD to be able to have.
I'd like to see if he gets a chance, you know, because really who else is out there, to be
honest with you.
That's a good point, Matt.
And the other thing is Brad Stevens had, because Brad Stevens lost Gordon Hayward last year,
first game. So it took Brad Stevens, the genius, the Sean McVeigh of the NBA,
took him six, eight weeks to figure out the Celtics. This is hard, man. When you insert Anthony
Davis, you've got to give it 25 games. All new thing. I mean, even a season, half a season,
it just takes time. And I think sports so often today, not only with the Lakers, but what
have you done for me lately? I need it done now. I need you to take the worst team to the best team.
And all this takes time. You know, all this takes time. People think the Warriors were overnight
success. And you saw they build.
built in the draft. They got Coach Kerr. They were able to get, you know, they won
championships without Katie. They were able to get Katie. It was a process. It didn't
happen like this. I think Philly is a good sign. You know, they're kind of, you know,
kind of in a standstill right now, but it was definitely a process because they were the dormant
at the NBA for a while, you know what I mean? And now they have promised. They have two
all-stars, a destination now the teams want to go to. So you just have to give
situations time. And I don't think we have time in sports for some reason anymore.

All right, Joy Taylor is joining us hour three.
You know who's joining us in 15 minutes?
Who's that?
Always outspoken, Romo, Bill Romano.
Also been to four Super Bowls.
We've been to a lot of Super Bowls.
So he's going to be joining us, Joy, in about 15 minutes.
Best for last.
We found the craziest Super Bowl stat.
Craziest one.
Spells bad news for the Rams.
Driving to work this morning, we got news out of
the NBA. Anthony Davis, great player for the Pelicans, wants out of New Orleans, and this is what
AD's agent, Rich Paul, said to Woj earlier today. Anthony wants to be traded to a team that
allows him a chance to win consistently and compete for a championship. Every time this happens,
oh my word, everybody freaks out in sports. I can't believe it. This is what is wrong with the NBA.
This is terrible. All the great players are conjoining forces.
Number two is don't blame a great player if he wants out of a franchise that shouldn't exist to begin with.
okay this is this franchise the pelicans the NBA owned it for a while
the Benson family owns the Saints they bailed the league out and bought it but
do they really care about it let's be honest they made the NFL general manager the
NBA general manager nobody else does it that way they've got terrible attendance
the worst television deal in the NBA and you're going to blame because this guy wants
out of that franchise if you're a great employee in America and you don't think you're
companies up to your standards. I've left places. You've left places. An NBA superstar can't leave
places. And an NBA superstar has got about 10 years. I can broadcast for 40. And number three,
don't act shocked. This is the worst kept secret in the league. Why do you think we created the
LeBrow meter back in September? Because back in September, Anthony Davis signed with Clutch
sports. The deal was done that day.
Don't freak out.
Here's the other thing.
I'm reading Brad Turner is a guy that covers the Lakers for the LAQ times.
And he said, in order to get this done, in order to get it done, the starting point for the Lakers is trade Lanzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, their best big man, Zubosh, and a number one pick.
Well, I got news for you.
Anthony Davis, LeBron James, and according to that tweet.
Brandon Ingram aren't winning a title, aren't better than Boston.
They're not better than Golden State.
Sounds top heavy to me.
I'm not saying they wouldn't be better.
I'm not saying they couldn't make the Western Conference finals.
They're not beating Golden State.
Due to franchise and trade restrictions in the NBA,
the Celtics can't trade for Anthony Davis until the season is over,
and the Lakers know that.
And the third step is for this to work to get Anthony Davis to the Lakers is,
let's get it done in the next couple of months because by June the Celtics can make this deal
and they've got way better pieces, more picks, and better assets.
And the Lakers do not want to go toe to toe with the Celtics on this deal.
So my point is, the Lakers will probably give up more than they ideally want to.
So this will be a very top heavy Laker team that will be excellent.
that will contend to get to the Western Conference finals,
but will not be, in my opinion, close to beating a Golden State.
LeBron now, 15th year, first major injury,
Anthony Davis, not a premier three-point shooter.
Those guys are all over at Golden State.
We tend to freak out with these big moves.
But in review, he's moving because he wants to win
more than he cares about money.
I love that.
Nobody should be beholden
to a bad NBA franchise
that shouldn't exist.
And number three, this isn't shocking.
This thing happened in September.
It was the worst kept secret
in the NBA.
All right, we got ourselves
the Super Bowl. I saw this this morning.
This amazing.
Because I've been listening to you.
You know, my job, basically,
Joy, is to listen to the American public.
act. And I have been told over and over again that the only reason New England's dynasty is happening.
It's not the genius of Belichick, is not the efficiency and greatness of Brady. No, no, no, no.
It's due to the Buffalo Bills, the jets, and the dolphins, is that the reason this dynasty is taking place is because the AFC East is just terrible.
Miami's dysfunctional. The jets are dysfunctional. The bills are dysfunctional.
functions. That is why everybody
knows New England's no good.
Wait, that's crazy talk.
I'm looking down this morning, 96%
of money wagered
at the Mirage in Vegas
is on the Patriots.
Are they playing the bills?
Are they playing the Jets? Are they playing
the dolphins? Oh, it says
here they're playing the L.A. Rams.
So you could bet
on the Rams,
and yet you're not.
You're betting on the Patriots.
So maybe the AFC East is not the reason.
Let's be honest about this.
Fans think dynasties are created because of the dysfunction that surrounds them.
It gives them an opening.
But the Golden State Warriors, LeBron, James, Nick Saban and the SEC and the Patriots,
actually create the dysfunction and never get credit for it.
Just take the Warriors.
The Lakers are now, rumored to be getting rid of Luke Walton.
Another coach fired?
Dysfunction.
Houston Rockets brought in Carmelo Anthony, a desperate move to beat the Warriors.
Now he's out of town.
Lobb City with the Clippers.
Two great players, another really good player.
They're all now gone because they couldn't crack the Warriors' code.
The Warriors aren't winning because of dysfunction.
The Warriors have created dysfunction.
For years and years, we talked about how bad.
the Eastern Conference was.
The truth was, after the decision
LeBron made, there were 50 different
coaches in the East. He created
that. Isn't it ironic that
LeBron leaves the Eastern Conference?
And all I've heard from all the fans
in media this year, boy, the East
is a lot tougher than it used to be.
No, it's not.
It's not tougher than it used to be.
LeBron left, and so everybody
isn't freaking out and over-trading
and over-firing.
is that the Golden State Warriors and New England and LeBron in the East and Sabin in the South and college football never get credit.
They're not winning because of dysfunction.
Legends created.
Look what Amazon has done to retail.
Look what Uber has done to taxis.
By the way, a little mic drop by Tom Brady here a week out from the Super Bowl, might as well play that.
I can't thank you enough.
We're excited.
I hope you guys are excited.
And as Des said, let's let him hear it all the way down to Atlanta.
We're still here.
We're still here.
We're still here.
We're still here.
We're still here.
Oh, I forgot because of the bills, the jets, and the dolphins.
Who, by the way, we looked it up last week.
in the last 18 years, if you took out the Bill's Dolphin Jet Games against the Patriots,
how do those teams do against everybody else?
Here's the numbers.
They're all 500 teams.
They're not great.
They're not amazing.
They're not dysfunctional.
They're just a big bowl of average.
New England makes them look dysfunctional.
Coming up, Bill Romanowski.
Oh, is a treat Romo who's been to four suits.
Super Bowls himself and been a four-time Super Bowl champ.
He joins us right around the corner.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.

New England Patriots
Brady Belichick 9th
Super Bowl, Sean McVeigh-Ga
first Super Bowl, how much does
that matter? Via the Coward
Global Satellite Network.
Bill Romanowski, a four-time
Super Bowl champ. Okay, I
want you, Bill,
compare the first Super Bowl
you ever went to
to the last Super Bowl
you went to. How much more
prepared? Did it change your preparation?
Did it change your anxiety?
You know
what? It was night and day.
I came into the NFL, got drafted, Colin.
And my first year with San Francisco, we go to the Super Bowl and win.
I had no idea what I was doing.
Well, hey, fast forward 16 years later, and I'm playing for the Oakland Raiders,
I was so dialed in to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
and we end up losing the game.
I had one of my best games ever,
but still we lost the game,
and you talk about hurt, you talk about pain,
nothing worse than losing a Super Bowl.
You know, for a team like the Patriots that's been here before,
their system over star,
whereas the Rams are young,
they've got several stars.
I almost think there's a disadvantage
to having a lot of stars on your roster in a Super Bowl
because that's where the media gloms onto.
Whereas the Patriots have one, Tom Brady,
and he pretty much hides from the media.
Go back to your Super Bowl teams.
Some had more stars than other.
Did that matter?
You know what?
It's funny because in San Francisco, that's what we had.
We had Hall of Famers.
We had stars, and we had a lot of them.
You go to our Denver Bronco team.
We had stars, but what we really had,
we had John Elway, and we had a bar.
bunch of blue-collared guys that brought their lunch pail to work every day and went out there
and played football hard for one another. If I kind of compare that team, that Denver Bronco
team, I feel like it was a lot like the New England Patriots because the New England Patriots
are a team. They are the ultimate team. They do it with less talent other than one position,
and that's the quarterback position. You know, it's funny because I always,
has thought, you, you are Belichick's sort of guy. High functioning, intense, no BS. You go look at guys
he's picked up from other NFL teams. They've got the accolades. They're high functioning.
You know, take me, you, you've never played for the Patriots. But when you watch them,
is there a little bit of jealousy thinking, God, this would have been, this would have been a
perfect fit for me?
I would have absolutely given anything to play for Bill Belichick, for his Patriots.
I absolutely love what they do.
I have so much respect for him.
I have so much respect for Tom Brady.
I actually have turned into a New England Patriot fan other than when they play the Raiders.
But, you know, what I like is they out game plan people and they get guys to buy you.
in to do what they do.
And they are, I would say, other than one position, just a good group of players.
But that one guy, Tom Brady, makes the rest of the group great.
I want to shift to the Saints and the Rams.
Now, obviously, you've played in games.
When you go on the road, it's imperfect.
Sometimes at home you get the call.
Sometimes on the road you don't.
Saints were at home, and there was a call at the end of the game.
game. It was a bad call. You can't deny that. But my takeaway in life is if you dwell on
bad situations, they'll affect you the next year or the next game. I wish the Saints would
move on emotionally. What do you make of the Saints, the lawsuits, the billboards, the outrage?
What do you make of it? You know, I feel their pain because that truly, I think, determined the
outcome of the football game.
And to me, I think it's up to the NFL to figure out a way around this, where maybe a call
like that with under two or three minutes left in the game, you're able to actually reverse the
call.
I think this one is up to the NFL, Colin, because you hate to see a team like the Saints not
being in the Super Bowl because a referee messed up.
a call at a pivotal time in that football game.
Yeah, I've always had a feeling, Romo.
My rule was, it's called the umbrella rule that with three minutes left in a football game,
not two, because two you may not have enough time and not four.
That's too many.
But with three minutes left, there's an umbrella rule where the league can step in and say,
we're just reviewing that.
And I think in this instance, it would have obviously helped the Saints.
I want to shift to one Raiders question with you, Bill Romanoiski's joining us.
Nutrition 53.com slash lean one bar.
One Raider question.
I keep hearing about Gruden because you've worked on the Raider broadcast.
I keep hearing about Derek Carr.
My theory is Derek Carr, you can win a lot of games if you give them a defense in an
old line.
I'm reading stories like John Gruden doesn't like Derek Carr.
Can you give us, Bill, some clarity on that?
Yes.
Here's what I would say about John Gruden, because I know John well.
is John likes tough, hard-nosed football players.
When I think of a quarterback that was perfect for John Gruden,
Rich Gannon, does car fit that mold?
No.
And because the guy can make every throw on the field, Colin,
but I just don't think he is Gruden's guy.
And because of that, I think there's going to be,
I would say I wouldn't be surprised if there was a change at that position because that is the key to the Raiders really changing this thing.
Oh, I want to throw one more question at you.
You know defense very well.
Wade Phillips.
Yep.
Wade Phillips has always sort of been a, this is my defense.
I'm not going to change it much.
Guy.
I don't love that against Belichick, Brady, and Josh McDaniels.
In fact, I think the edge in this game goes to New England, not on Belichick McVey.
I think the edge for New England is on Josh McDaniels against Wade Phillips, who tends to have a defense and not, you know, he doesn't make a lot of moves.
Any thoughts on that being a disadvantage for the Rams?
You know what?
I think you're right.
I think when it comes to a situation where you're playing probably, you're really playing the best coaching staff.
in the National Football League.
And when you play against the best coaching staff,
and if you have to make a tweak and it goes against what you normally like to do,
well, shame on you.
Because this is a game where somehow, some way,
they've got to be able to get pressure up the middle.
Nobody has been able to pressure Brady in the playoffs thus far.
And if they don't get pressure up the middle,
if Donald and Sue don't show up,
and play the game of their life, they don't have a prayer because New England will pick them apart.
Is there a way, if you were a coordinator and we're going up against Brady, is there a way,
I mean, or do you, when you, when you, when you bill in your career faced all-time greats,
is it a lot of crossing your fingers?
Is there a way to disrupt Tom that you've seen?
You know what?
There's only one way to really disrupt him.
And like I said, you got to get pressure on him.
Because when he's not under pressure, his quarterback rating is over 100.
When he is under pressure, Colin, his quarterback rating is at 70.
He turns into an average quarterback when he is pressured.
It's no different than other quarterbacks.
But other quarterbacks usually have a quarterback rating of 60, 50, 40 when you put pressure on him.
So the key to this is one thing.
you have to be able to get to the kingpin, and that's Tom Brady.
His site is Nutrition53.com slash lean one bar.
I see he's got a smoothie king right in front of him.
It's a great product, Bill.
I love it.
And you look like, by the way, the best meal I've ever had at a Super Bowl was with Bill and his wife.
It was about two years ago.
It almost sent me to the hospital I ate so much.
So I remember it kindly in Houston, and Bill, it's great talking to you again.
I love you, Colin.
Take care.
You bet.

Joy Taylor with the news.
No, no, no, no, turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So, Bill just mentioned it.
There's a couple things that you should always do when you are playing against the Patriots in a big game.
Yeah.
Get to Tom Brady.
plan for your best
offensive weapon to be taken away from you?
Yes.
And avoid giving them
bulletin board material.
Tell Roboge Coleman, obviously, did not get the last part of that memo.
He told Leacher Report,
age has definitely taken the toll.
He's talking about Tom Brady.
He's definitely not the same quarterback he was.
He can still sling it,
but he's not slinging it as much,
and sometimes it's not the sharpest.
Stick a dagger in them,
pull it out, and let them leak slow.
Just kill them slowly.
That's how you do them.
I don't know.
How many teams have killed the Patriot's slowly?
Not many.
I don't know.
He also said that the Rams can get to Brady all over the place,
which is quite the statement,
considering he has barely been snuffed this postseason.
I will say this, though,
Indomacan Su and Dante Fowler,
who I think are better than their historic production.
I think they've both underachieved a little.
Indomacan Tudu Danty Fowler have played really well the last two weeks.
So as somebody on this show, I forget who said it was,
when you get these high-priced guys who have been a little enigmatic in their careers,
in Dominican Sue Dante Fowler,
not been as good as they've been paid or we thought
or they've been drafted.
They do tend to rise up in the big games.
And Sue against the Cowboys was great.
And Fowler the last couple of weeks
has put on real pressure.
So they do have the components to create a pass rush.
Doesn't mean they will, but they've got the guys.
Whatever game plan that they have for getting to the quarterback
and the Patriots offensive line has just been incredible,
this postseason, because you can talk about how Tom Brady goes through his
progressions quickly or he's great at the line. He's had a lot of time. In that Chiefs
game, it felt like he had an eternity, just an eternity, especially in the fourth quarter.
Is anyone going to get to him? And they have a great defensive line. So I'm really
interested to see how this goes. But this will just get added. I think they really literally
might have a Bolton board in their locker room. They just print giant signs of statements
on that people make about them and play clips of you saying that they don't have.
have any skill players, skill positions.
All right. So LeBron seems close to returning from his groin injury.
According to LA Times, there's hope from the Lakers that LeBron James plays Thursday against
the Clippers, but he's looking to get a few more practices in.
His availability will depend on how his body reacts to those.
The Lakers obviously have gone six and ten without LeBron and they have slipped to ninth in the
West, one spot behind the Clippers.
So this is a relatively big game.
So it looks like, let's say he misses that game joy.
That would be 16 games he's missed and 36.
days or something like that. That's a, that's a long stretch. That's a big, that's a big long,
well, I mean, this, this injury is generally, what, four to six weeks of recovery. So that's
what it's been. So it's not like it's been out of the realm. Like it's, it's been like,
okay, we really, really, really need to start worrying about it. Although it kind of feels
that way, because it's LeBron and he's never been injured for this long. But I don't know.
I mean, I don't see the point of rushing him back. Well, no, no, at this point, you better get,
because the real issue would be, oh, oh, wait, he just.
had a second injury. That's the nightmare scenario where other stars are like, forget it.
Well, we talked about this earlier. This season was supposed to be the season where there are
no expectations and you are going to sort everything out and figure out what this team is going to be
and what part of this, this young core you're going to keep and how LeBron fits in all of this.
But it's LeBron James and it's L.A. So maybe it was unrealistic of all of us to think that
they were just going to cruise through this season and go undetected with all of their issues.
I mean, it's going to be interesting. Finally, we, we're going to be.
We've talked all day about the news of Anthony Davis wanting to take his talents elsewhere.
The report immediately raised speculation of him landing with LeBron and the Lakers.
And unsurprisingly, the other face of mobile superstars, Kevin Durant, was asked about the news after a warrior shoot-around.
Definitely a topic of conversation.
All NBA news is, I mean, it's not that serious.
So it's like, why not talk about it?
You know what I'm saying?
So AD wanted to play basketball somewhere else.
It's not like the president's shutting down the government.
He's his basketball, so of course, we talk about it.
And we all, as players, you know, we want guys to do exactly what they want to do in.
We have a short amount of time, so why not do what you want?
Jeff, don't disagree at all.
Well, I mean, not a surprising response from Katie.
Well, I mean, very tone deaf of him to say anything other than this.
But it is true, though.
He has the absolute right to do whatever it is that he wants.
Right.
I mean, he's only going to, he has a very short amount of time to play in the NBA, considering, you know, what.
compared to a career like ours or we can work for 40-50 years.
And the NBA players shouldn't even be compared to baseball players
or football players or hockey players,
because the NBA is a different league.
It's the one sport where two great players together can control the entire league.
I mean, Houston, Texans have it all sorts of great players for years.
They haven't done anything.
Well, also, his reasoning for leaving is that he wants to win.
Yeah, his franchise stinks.
It's not like he's not going to make a ridiculous amount of money
if he stayed in New Orleans, so it's obviously not about money.
Did it come out to California?
I don't even know what's the state tax here, 75%.
Yeah.
I mean, so it's clearly about him wanting to win, not saying he's definitely going to end up with the Lakers,
but he wants to be with the contender.
Joy Taylor with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The herd lie news.
By the way, Jared Goff grew up idolizing Tom Brady, much like Brady grew up idolizing Joe Montana.
So it's kind of ironic.
Is Goff the next Brady?
people scoff at that, but nobody thought Brady would be the next Montana.
Jared Goff was asked about, you know, facing Tom Brady in the Super Bowl and said, basically,
you know, I'm not awestruck.
I've said before is that I look for traits and qualities in young quarterbacks.
Goff has the most traits and qualities of Tom Brady.
And basically, he came out this week and just said, we have sound on this.
Here's Goff talking about Brady.
It's a guy that you've looked up to for so long.
And I was, like I said, I was probably seven or eight years old when he was winning Super
Bulls to begin with.
And now I get a chance to plan one with him.
And at the same time, you know, we do respect him.
But you're going to go out there and do my best and be the best I can be and hopefully come out with a win.
A little surreal in some ways?
No.
Not at all.
I've played these guys before.
For the record, golf is kind of boring.
much like Tom Brady was early in his Super Bowl winning years.
And during Brady's early years when he was even winning Super Bowls,
it was Peyton Manning and Farve that got way more attention.
They were more interesting.
They were the big stars.
Brady, even when he won Super Bowls early,
was not the star of Peyton Manning.
He was not the star of Brett Farb.
Even Aaron Rogers walked into the league before he got his Super Bowl.
It's all anybody wanted to talk about.
The media likes exciting.
That's why Cam Newton has always been oversaw.
sold and Andrew Luck gets no love.
Russell Wilson doesn't get a lot of love.
He doesn't talk much.
Russell's kind of a, you know, when you talk to Russell Wilson, he gives you cliches,
and Andrew Luck gives you cliches.
Cam Newton gives you style.
Baker Mayfield, by the way, media loves Baker Mayfield.
Why?
Baker Mayfield's got a big personality.
Jared Goff is Tom Brady.
Now, if the results become Tom Brady, I would be shocked too.
But of the nine best young quarterbacks in the game, Lamar Jackson, Sam Darnold,
Trubisky, Garoppolo, Wince, Mayfield.
golf, Mahomes, Deshawn Watson.
If I had to put them in order
over the next 10 years
of wins, I'd put
golf number one, Mahomes number two.
Then I'd go Wenz, Garoppolo,
Donald, Watson, Mayfield, Trebisky, Lamar Jackson.
I don't really bind to Trubisky, Lamar Jackson, long term.
I think they're runners more than throwers, and there's limitations
and sustainability's in question.
But I would choose Goff and Mahomes
Wence as the top, and a lot of that
is because you need three things to win
in this league now.
head coach, they all have very good offensive coaches.
McVe, Andy, Reed, and Doug Peterson,
good offensive line and weapons.
They have that in L.A., Kansas City, and Philadelphia.
And can you be a precision thrower?
I think Gop, Mahomes, and Wentz have proven that.
But over the next 10 years, if you're talking wins,
and I had to make a bet, I think it's Gough and Mahomes.
And I think they have the three components.
Mahomes are going to get a lot more attention because he's more fun to watch.
just like Farab was a lot more fun to watch than Tom Brady and still is.
But don't kid yourself.
Goff has all the traits and all the accessories and all the precision and all the weapons
and all the money behind him with Stan Cronky, the owner, and the genius head coach.
Goff's going to be around for a long time and this is not his last time in this situation.
Coming up, the craziest Super Bowl stat.
And it's not great for the Rams.

This February, the greatest event in motorsports, is back.
The Daytona 500 kicks off the 2019 NASCAR season, February 17th on Fox.
Greg Jennings, Peter King, Matt Barnes, Bill Romanowski, all hitting it out of the park.
It's great to have you in today. Tom Brady is now in his ninth Super Bowl.
And when you look at his Super Bowl stats alone, they're mind-boggling.
So that leads us to one of our favorite games, Tom or False.
It's time for America's favorite new game, Tom or false.
Sweeping a nation, Colin.
Sweping the name.
Tom or false.
All right.
So Tom Brady averages more pass yards per game in the Super Bowl than any quarterback
average per game in the 2018 regular season.
That's a good one.
So he averages more in his eight Super Bowls than any quarterback averaged this past season per game.
That's a good question.
I would say, didn't Mahomes average a lot?
I would say that's false.
No, it's Tom.
It's true.
Brady's averaging 322 yards per game in the Super Bowl.
Rathesberger led the league, actually, with 38.
yards per game. The hell.
It's a lot.
God. You know, it's funny what I think is Super Bowl's New England.
I think they don't score in the first quarter
and they run more than throw. I'm blown away by that.
Well, that's what Tom does. So Tom are false.
Tom Brady has thrown more passing touchdowns in the Super Bowl than
Peyton Manning, John Elway, and Joe Montana
combined. That's Tom. That's Tom. That is
correct. Tom has 18. The others have 17. Montana has 11.
Peyton has three and Elway has three.
those guys. Say what, John? Elway was in five Super Bowls, yet only has three touchdown passes combined.
Well, remember, he won a Super Bowl when Terrell Davis arrived, and they became very much a defense in running to, even though Elway was great, they became very much a ball-controlled defensive team in Denver when they won those Super Bowls.
All right. Tom or false? Tom Brady has appeared in more Super Bowls than Sean Connery in James Bond movies.
I would say that's true because there were like six different bonds. So I said it's correct. Tom has nine Super Bowl.
appearances. Sean Connery was in seven James Bond films.
How many Bond films have there been? 20? A lot. They're good.
One of these days they're going to cast a woman as Bond. What's going on there?
That's going to get real. Variety magazine? I've been contacted.
Oh, okay. Tom or false? Tom Brady has won more Super Bowl MVP's than the Beatles won Grammy Awards.
More Super Bowl MVP than the Beatles won Grammys. That's false. It is false, but it's close,
actually. Tom Brady has four Super Bowl MVP's.
The Beatles only won seven Grammys.
They were nominated 23 times.
So you're young.
You don't, do you ever listen?
I appreciate the Beatles, yeah.
They were great.
They were great.
Yeah. I mean, I don't know, I don't know how much they...
Let me ask you.
How many Grammys of Beatles?
How many Grammys?
Seven.
So Millie Vanilli won only six fewer.
Somebody, they should get rid of the Grammy voters.
Look, Beatles are all-time great.
There's other musicians.
This is other great musicians out there.
Feels strong.
They kind of got short change.
I feel like 7 Grammys is a little white.
All right.
So Tom are false.
And all his seasons is a starter.
Tom Brady has had a better chance of making the Super Bowl than you do hitting red on a roulette spin.
I mean, time out.
Tom Brady has had a better chance of making the Super Bowl than you do hitting red on a roulette spin.
Yeah, but isn't red just 50-50?
No.
Okay.
So I would say that's Tom.
It is Tom.
Thomas appeared in the Super Bowl and 50% of his seasons as a starter.
Chance of hitting red is 47.3%.
Well, wait a minute.
That doesn't make any sense.
I don't know.
Why wouldn't it red and...
Because the zeros are green.
Oh, zeros are green.
Oh, Goulet.
This is why I'm not a strong gambler.
You're not a gambler?
I told you.
I take a certain amount of cash out, and I don't spend more than that.
$300.
I will not get more out of the machine than...
I always took $300 to Vegas.
And after $300, I quit.
That's it.
And then to me, that's worth it.
I've paid for my entertainment value, and if I lose, I lose.
All right, Tom has more Super Bowl rings than King Henry.
The 8th had wedding rings.
What?
How well do you know your history?
Okay, so let me just think about this.
So Tom has five Super Bowl rings.
Does he have five?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, Tom has five Super Bowl rings.
That guy.
Boy, he was a flirt.
I'm going to go false.
It is false.
Tom has five Super Bowl rings.
Henry had six wives, or we're assuming he had six rings.
I don't know if they didn't rings back in the day.
Six?
That's a lot of work.
Seriously.
Did he take a break in between the wives?
I mean, it was just, I hope he wasn't just, that's a lot of work.
It seems like a lot of work.
All right.
Tom Brady's completion percentage in the Super Bowl is higher than Russell Westbrook's
free throw percentage this season.
Oh, time out.
Would you please restate this?
Tom Brady's completion percentage in the Super Bowl is higher than Russell Westbrook's
free throw percentage this season.
season. Okay, so I think Westbrook's free throw percentage this year hovers around 65%. Now, I got to
remember this because Brady's last couple Super Bowls, he's been like robotic, a machine. But in the
first Super Bowls, I think he had one where he was close to 50%. So that I'm going to say, I'm going to say
false. It is Tom. Tom's completion percentage in the Super Bowl is 65.8%. And you're right about
Westbrook's free throw percentage this season. It is 64.9%. That's embarrassing.
I don't know if it's a fair comparison.
Why?
It feels like...
It feels like an easy way to jab at Westbrook at the end of our game.
But...
I didn't...
It is correct.
One guy has to go against defenses and people are tackling him.
The other guy can sit at the free throw one and can't hit as many free throws?
The free throw thing is, it is bizarre to me.
I have to agree with you there.
Isn't it mind-boggling?
It is.
It's very strange.
And he was an 80% shooter a couple years ago.
He was 75 last year.
He was 65.
His shot's totally broken.
I don't know what's happening there.
I've said this with Westbrook.
If he came into the league today and there was no history, he was just a new player,
you'd be like, he can't start, he can't shoot.
He cannot be, she's a bullhawk.
But because of his history and the triple double, it also shows how overrated the triple double is,
I think he had one last night and his plus minus was minus 11.
That stat is stupid.
It doesn't mean anything.
You don't think he should have won the MVP that year.
I don't understand why.
I, there's never been a time in my life.
Here's what it would be like.
Giving a quarterback an MVP because of his touchdowns,
because of his completion percentage, and because of his rushing yards.
And you'd be like, I don't really want my quarterback running.
Like, I don't want my guard rebounding, and I don't want my quarterback running.
I'm not saying it's not cool that Aaron Rogers twice a game can't scoot for 11 yards.
but if you told me my quarterback,
I gave a guy an MVP because he completed 69% of his throws.
He had 27 touchdowns, and he ran for 800 yards.
I'd be like, I don't want my quarterback running for 800 yards.
I don't think rebounds for a guard is something I care about.
In fact, I would say it goes against what I want,
which is stay away from the big bodies, get out on the break.
I don't want you under the rim.
I don't want big bodies banging India.
I mean, it was an incredible season to watch,
but what's happening now is really bizarre and kind of unexplainable.
The Brady stuff.
What was the first question you asked?
The first question was he averages more pass yards per game in the Super Bowl than any quarterback
average per game in the 2018 regular season.
Now, think about that.
Rani Moss was only with him in one Super Bowl.
So he is averaging, what's the number 300?
What, 35 yards?
322.
That is a lot.
And Rathesberger led the league with 300.
And by the way, yeah, that's against Super Bowl defenses.
That is, if you go look at the history of the Patriots, they've faced good defenses.
The New York Giants twice, the Seattle Seahawks.
By the way, last year, the Eagles defense was good.
They faced good.
Well, even I think even more impressive is if this was a very, like a small game percentage
or sample size we're looking from, then maybe it could be easily explainable, but this is nine games, well, eight games.
And the other thing is they've led some of these Super Bowls.
So that's consistent high numbers.
So it's not like they've trailed by.
three touchdowns and he's getting he's getting cushy defense generally when tom is driving down the field
late the game's in the balance so he's getting a real pass rush he's not getting like you know the soft dime
coverage give him underneath stuff that's that's the most remarkable stat that's incredible
uh tomorrow on the show uh jeff garcia very good quarterback in the NFL not sure if we've ever had
him on the show before uh Greg jennings Peter king Matt barns and bill romanowski all showed up today
I like what Romanoowski said.
He goes, my first Super Bowl, I was on a great team.
He goes, I don't remember any of it.
My last Super Bowl, he goes, I remember all of it.
I was completely utterly dialed in.
I think that's a big advantage for New England.
I don't know how much of an advantage it is, but it does feel like it's.
Now, Philadelphia last year came in with a, Doug Peterson never coached in a Super Bowl,
Nick Foles never played, and they were great.
So games, you know, they unravel the way they unravel.
I don't think the Rams will be by any stretch.
I don't think the Rams will be anxious or nervous.
But I do think it's, I think it's an edge.
That's all I'll say.
Speak for yourself.
Around the corner.
Coming up next.
