Breeze is stopping by this morning. Joy Taylor. How are you?
you. I'm great. Good morning. Good morning. Baker, Baker, Newsmaker. Again, article in GQ magazine. We will
start there. Third magazine expose on Baker Mayfield in the last couple of months. He's making
news. It's an article, you know, he's a lot of Baker here. Here's the quote that will make
the most news. He says, I cannot believe the Giants took quarterback Daniel Jones. Blows my mind.
Some people overthink it.
That's where people go wrong.
They forget you got to win.
Either you have a history of winning and being that guy for your team or you don't.
So he's saying Daniel Jones didn't win in college.
He was 17 and 19.
And the Giants took a big risk on drafting Daniel Jones, according to Baker Mayfield.
So let me start with this.
Did the Cleveland Browns not take a risk drafting a guy with a police video in college?
a five, 11 and a half, two-time walk-on?
Yes, Baker Mayfield won in college.
That's because everybody wins at Oklahoma.
Jason White on two bad knees won the Heisman.
Josh Heiple won at Oklahoma.
I think he won a national title.
So you can argue that Cleveland took a big risk with Baker Mayfield.
I got a police video.
he comes from a program where every quarterback wins.
Even the, they've had multiple guys in the NFL drafted that have been busts at quarterback.
I would say this about Baker, though.
Baker's made it very easy for me to evaluate him because what Baker is saying is there's no context to winning.
Did you win, period?
By the way, Tim Tebow was 35 and 6 in college.
Colt McCoy was 45 and 8.
Kellyn Moore was 50 and 3, and A.J. McCarran was 36 and 4.
You know who didn't win in college?
Patrick Mahomes and Jared Gough and Matt Ryan.
They didn't win much in college.
But again, Baker Mayfield said it's all about winning.
There's no nuance needed, no context.
I've said before, if Baker Mayfield succeeds in Cleveland,
it will be more impressive than, let's say, Patrick Mahomes winning in Kansas City,
because Patrick Mahomes has Andy Reed.
That's a stable team.
That's good ownership.
Cleveland, not stable, not great ownership.
So winning in Cleveland, because I believe there's nuance and context to winning.
But Baker Mayfield does not.
It is all about winning.
So let's then just do it the Baker way.
Let's just talk about wins.
Baker Mayfield is 6 and 7 as an NFL quarterback.
He's a loser.
By the way, he's 1 in 5 against playoff teams.
He's a loser.
because there's no context to anything.
Matt Ryan played with Boston college teammates who don't go to the pros.
Tim Tebow played with 37 NFL, but there's no context to it.
Daniel Jones is a loser.
I'm a winner, Baker Mayfield.
Not to mention Daniel Jones was throwing to guys who don't get drafted by the CFL.
But there's no context.
It's just I'm a winner, right, Baker, and everybody else is a loser.
So let's go to Baker Mayfield's big wins last year in the NFL.
28 to 16 over at L.
Atlanta, missing three of their four defensive back starters, a seven and nine team.
That was a big win for him.
He did beat Cincinnati.
Oh, they finished in fourth place.
Starting quarterback got hurt during the game.
He beat Carolina.
O'Kam was hurt, and they won one game after Thanksgiving.
Oh, he did beat Denver.
They were six and ten.
And then he beat Cincinnati again, starting Jeff Driscoll at quarterback.
Those were the wins.
No context, no nuance.
Those are the wins, right?
They won.
Baker Mayfield has won one NFL game outside of Ohio.
One.
See, because I believe winning has context.
I think it's easier to win quarterbacking Oklahoma and Florida
than it is like Jared Gough at Cal or Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech
or Andrew Luck at Stanford.
See, I think there's context to it.
I do think winning in Cleveland with a GM and John Dorsey,
was fired, Jimmy Haslam, who's been chaotic. Freddie Kitchens, a rookie head coach, and the youngest
roster in the NFL, and some really dramatic players, OBJ, Sheldon Richardson. I think that would
be very impressive. But that would be if you had nuance and context to winning instead of just
that guy didn't win in college, I won in college. Because you do realize Baker, Patrick Mahomes'
NFL record, he's a winner.
You're a loser right now.
But he has Andy Reid.
Doesn't matter.
Patrick's a winner.
You're a loser.
Because it's all about winning.
There's no context to it.
I would just like to remind everybody.
Six and seven is Baker Mayfield's NFL record.
One in five, one win outside of Ohio.
That's the winner for you.
He is some winner.
Let me shift to this.
Jimmy Garoppolo had a zero-zero quarterback rating last night.
He was not great.
And so this morning, people are like, whoa, this Jimmy Garoppolo thing is not great for San Francisco.
Okay, here's what I don't need with Jimmy Garoppel.
Small sample sizes.
Because that's all I have with him.
And last night, I got 11 snaps.
You ever had topas?
he's the topas of NFL quarterbacks.
Small, shareable serving sizes that we all consume.
I don't know what to make of last night.
The average NFL team averages 23 and a half points
and about five points in the first quarter.
San Francisco didn't have any.
But you have to remember with Jimmy Garoppolo,
he's coming off an ACL surgery.
Tom Brady wasn't great the year he came off the surgery.
He's played 10 games.
He's 8 and 2.
I think he's good.
His offensive line last night looked overwhelmed with Bradley Chubb coming hard for Denver on the end.
He's coming off an injury.
The best receiver San Francisco has, George Kittle, the tight end, didn't play.
The rest of the receivers are young and still learning the offense.
The offensive line look overwhelmed.
Vic Fangio's one of the top defensive guys in the NFL.
He's now the head coach of Denver.
I don't know what to make of it.
Because with Jimmy Garapolo, the last thing I need is more small sample sizes.
And that is, again, what I got last night, 11 snaps.
A, he's not going to lose his starting job to a backup, so I don't really care.
And B, he's not a rookie.
This is not Kyler Murray.
Can he play at this level?
Tom Brady's had bad first quarters in Super Bowls at the end of seasons with two weeks to prepare.
Jimmy G. Off ACL, 11 snaps against a great pass rusher and a tremendous defensive coordinator
without his best tight end. Young wide receivers learning as they go. He looked rusty. Here's Jimmy G.
Obviously a little frustrated, but it's the NFL. You know, it's unfortunately we don't get to play
the whole game right now. So, you know, I get so many plays. You wish you could be out there for more so you
you get bounced back and everything.
But it is what is the preseason right now.
So just got to take it in stride.
It's something that I haven't done in the year, obviously.
So, you know, got to knock the rust off and everything.
And, you know, thankfully we have a short week this week so we can bounce back quickly.
But it's, you know, the first step of getting back into it.
Teams are now doing joint practices in the NFL, like that's a real thing.
And we had the GM of the Chargers on last week who's doing a joint practice.
And he said, you know, I like it.
I like the physicality.
But it's not a game.
Jimmy Garoppolo hasn't played a game in a year.
I don't know what I'm supposed to make of 11 snaps.
When his offensive line looked overwhelmed,
his receivers are kids,
his best tight end wasn't there,
and I don't think they're showing you everything they have.
It was another small sample size.
I have 10 with the 49ers.
He's 8 and 2 and looked really, really good.
I'm going to go with that over the 11 snobes.
snaps I saw last night. I just don't know what to make of it. Coming up next, Antonio Brown has
filed a second grievance, and the AP top 25 came out in college, and it's different than previous
years, and I think it's very possible we will see the greatest college football team of the
modern era this season, and I don't think I'm hyperventilating at all. That's coming up. You ever

All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own.
I was like, what the hell is that?
I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that nest was going to be.
Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive.
Wait, what sex?
Dating at 45.
How can it be getting naked at 50 with the new guy?
That one's kind of hard, no.
Well, that's lighting.

You know how magicians?
You ever go to see a magician?
One day I went and saw two magicians.
I saw David Copperfield early with my son.
And then we went and got dinner and watched Chris Angel late with my son.
And two magicians in one day.
And the trick, of course, with magicians is look over here as I'm doing stuff over here.
It's, you know, optical illusions.
They're trying to make you look there.
as they do something there.
And I wonder, Antonio Brown,
raider-wide receiver,
has filed a new grievance over his helmet.
And I'm just wondering,
is it possible?
And this theory isn't any crazier
than Antonio Brown is.
Is this just all a cover
because his feet aren't right
from that cryo accident?
Because the foot issue is embarrassing.
The foot issue is dumb.
The foot issue is self-inflicted.
Antonio Brown can't blame
anybody for the foot issue. It makes him look like a goofball.
So if you create a second issue, the magician's trick, we're all paying attention
to the grievance in the helmet. And nobody, if you've noticed in the media, is talking
about the foot issue. Well, nobody's talking about it. That's embarrassing. That's like being
a goofy kid. That's what a dope does. And Antonio Brown knows it. He posted it on like
Instagram or Twitter, and people just
crushed him. And so
he suddenly has a helmet grievance
and therefore nobody's
talking about the foot. I
had his agent Drew Rosenhaus on yesterday
and I asked about the foot issue
and if he's ready to play.
I think his feet are doing
well. He's definitely getting
there. I think it's a matter of time
until he's fully cleared in that capacity.
I would expect he'd be healthy by the end
of the preseason. Oh.
So the foot issues.
not solved.
So his feet aren't 100% is what his agent saying.
This feels like, you know, this feels like to me he's embarrassed about the feet and so it's a helmet grievance.
And, you know, like when NFL teams generally say, we're gathering more information, we'll get back to you.
It always feels like they're lying.
I think with the Raiders here, they're not lying.
They are trying to gather more information.
can't figure out the helmet issue.
And I'm just wondering if it's the old magician's trick.
I think it's tough. The Raiders have a young roster.
This is not a great look. He's not practicing with Derek Carr.
The division's never been better at the top. I don't know if he's now tradable.
Forget about the Hall of Fame stuff, which it will hurt him.
They won't vote him in first time. Just the way the Hall of Fame voters are can be very,
very petty. But I think it makes John Gruden in the NFL.
you never want to get cornered. You never want to get trapped. It's always next man up because
people get hurt. So that's why New England always drafts a quarterback, even when Brady was in his
prime. That's why the L.A. Rams drafted another running back this year. You know, you don't want to,
you want to be nimble. You don't want to be cornered. You don't want to be trapped. The
Raiders kind of feel like now they're trapped, and I think they are confused because I think
A.B. is pulling a magic trick on him. He doesn't want you to talk about the feet. So let's talk about
the helmet. Joy Taylor with the news.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So we talked a little bit about the 2019 NBA rookie survey yesterday.
They said to the Brahma's their favorite player.
Wow.
Interestingly enough, Zion's fellow rookies might not be as hot on him as everyone else is.
In the 2019 rookie survey, they were asked which rookie will have the best career and the results are kind of surprising.
Cam Reddish who went to Atlanta, got 19% of the veterans.
vote. Jah Morant, who went to Memphis, got 16%. DeAndre Hunter, also in Atlanta, 11%.
Zion Williamson is tied with R.J. Barrett, Jackson Hayes, Kobe White, all at 5%.
Is there jealousy playing a part in here? There could be a little bit of jealousy involved in,
you know, $100 million shoe contract. DeAndre Hunter?
Look, a lot of people have questions about Zion Williamson as far as his body goes. There's a lot
a conversation about his weight over the summer.
I think it's a little, there might be a little dash,
a little dash of saltiness in this voting.
But it is kind of interesting, though.
I mean, that's, that's, I mean, Cam Reddish wasn't even considered to be above
RJ Barrett coming in the draft.
Like, it's, it's just, John Morant would make more sense.
I think RJ Barrett.
Oh, I would, I would give you John Morant.
I actually think R.J. Barrett will score a lot in the NBA.
So he could have a really good career.
I'm not saying that Cambrides isn't going to have a good career.
He was playing with a lot of great players.
So he might not have been able to shine the way that clearly the rookies see him higher than that.
So Jimmy G.
All right.
So it was his first action since tearing his ACL in week three of last season.
He had a night to forget last night against the Broncos.
Gropolo completed only one of his six passing attempts for zero yards and a pick,
all for a quarterback passer rating of 0.0.
And after the game, he expressed his frustration.
Obviously a little frustrated, but that's the NFL.
You know, it's unfortunately we don't get to play the whole game right now.
So, you know, I get so many plays.
You wish you could be out there for more so you could bounce back and everything.
But, you know, it is what is the preseason right now.
So just got to take it in the shot.
It's something that I haven't done in the year, obviously.
So, you know, got knocked the rust off and everything.
And, you know, thankfully we have a short week this week so we get bounced back quickly.
But it's, you know, the first step of getting back into it.
So he's 27 years old entering the second season of his five-year,
137 million-dollar contract extension,
but they kind of can move off of him sooner than people think
if this year doesn't turn out the way that they wanted to.
Look at that. Look at it.
The cap hit's not going to be that insane.
It's not what you want to see.
I don't get him, obviously.
Look at the pressure he's facing.
Yeah, no, the offensive line was not giving him anything.
Any help.
But you still have to do a little bit better.
that. I mean, zero point zero is tough to look away from.
It's, it may not tell
the whole story of what was going on,
but look, you don't want to overreact
to it, it is preseason, but this is kind of
the space where you do get to get out there
and, like he said, knock the rust off and
get back into the flow. I don't think anyone should
dramatically overreact, but
it does feel like this is a year where
if Jimmy D. doesn't stay healthy the entire year
and doesn't perform up to that, that
contract, it should be seriously
considered what their next move is. By the way,
Bradley Chub looked really good last night.
He's the draft pick out of NC State, the pass rusher.
He is all over the field.
Strong.
So finally, he were just discussing this.
Antonio Brown and the helmet madness is still waiting to be resolved.
It doesn't look like it's any closer to a resolution.
News broke last night that he has filed a second grievance against the NFL.
So according to Ian Rappaport, Brown has filed another grievance against the NFL,
arguing that he should be afforded the same right provided to other NFL players to have a one-year grace period to phase out his house.
in the 2019 season.
He claims the NFL is arbitrarily applying rules.
The expectation is that it will be heard by an arbitrator on an expedited basis.
So his preferred helmet is the shut air advantage, which was discontinued in 2011.
And the NFL and NFLPA regulations require that players wear helmets that are manufactured within a 10-year window.
So he's trying to find a loophole, which has since been closed by the,
the NFL. So he's trying to basically on this
and an individual case basis get
through to wear this helmet.
Look,
even if he does get cleared
to wear this helmet for this
year, it's discontinued.
So no matter what happens,
it is inevitable as long as you're going
to play in the NFL that you will have
to wear this new helmet. Right.
So at this point, it's time
to sit down and explain
this is coming
no matter what you feel
or think about it.
Now, the NFL, I believe, contacted players,
let them know that this was coming.
So it's going to be very hard for him to argue
that he didn't have enough warning
that the change in the helmets was coming.
But it's here.
It has arrived.
Next year, even if he wins this grievance,
he's going to have to wear the helmet.
So it's time for a real conversation of this is,
we understand that you're uncomfortable,
but change is inevitable, such as life.
Everything is in motion, always.
And this is your new reality.
Or you can't play football anymore.
I mean, it's gone to the point now where it's actually passed over from, okay, there's a bit of understanding here, you're uncomfortable, you know, you're valuing how you perform into a realm of complete delusion.
Like, you have to wear the helmet eventually.
Yeah, I know.
And I get, I mean, I do understand players wanting certain helmets.
Like, I get it.
Like, anytime they, we lose our minds when I get uncomfortable when I have to use a new pen.
Okay.
I understand it fully.
But I also understand that if the pen that I like is no longer allowed, I'm not allowed to use it or I can't do my job, I'm going to have to get used to using the different equipment.
Like, it's inevitable.
It's crazy.
That's why my theory, I don't think's crazy.
I think he's trying to distract us from his feet because Drew Rosenhouse yesterday would not come on the air and acknowledge the feet are good.
He's like, they'll be ready by week one.
So Drew's.
Well, Drew's acknowledged.
Because agents, you know, they lie for a living, right?
Drew would not.
Drew came out yesterday and said, well, he's, his feet will be ready week one.
So that tells me his feet are still an issue.
But we're not talking about his feet.
We're talking about his helmet.
That is true.
Because it does the feet conversation is what it is.
You're injured.
And that's his.
That's self-inflicted.
Like he can't, it's easier to point to the NFL and go bad guys.
And we're all like, yeah, bad guys, big company.
Instead of going, how's your feet up?
It's a cryo.
It's not a bad theory.
All right, of my many goofy ones.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Heard Lye News.
So many stories today.
So here we go.
You know, it's interesting.
The nation, the football media, always talks about Tom Brady.
How is Tom Brady doing it?
And to that, my takeaway is, is anybody checked out that Drew Breeze is doing it too?
Drew Breeze is doing it in New Orleans, putting up these 5,000,
yard season. And it's pretty remarkable. And if you look at the Saints and you look at Tom Brady
and you look at New England, these are division-winning quarterbacks, now at 40. And all I know
about Brady and his physical health and kind of obsessive detail on his health is what I hear
about Drew Breeze. You just don't get here without being all in on your body. And I know
Drew is. And he is joining us now via the phone. Drew Breeze, who always comes on the show once or
twice a year, and we always appreciate that. So I ask you this every time. When you wake up in the
morning, you're entering your 19th NFL season. Drew, how do you feel in camp waking up this morning?
I feel pretty good, man. I feel like a kid again. Do you have you changed your diet over the last
10 years, Drew, because you are doing something that only Brady's done. You changed your diet? Or is it
pretty much same old for you. You've always been this way. I'm more conscious of it, you know,
over the last five years. I've always been fairly disciplined with my diet, mainly in regards
allergies and that kind of thing. That's something that I, you know, getting the blood test
and doing different things to determine food allergies early in my career and then kind of
change my diet maybe year four. And it's stayed pretty true to that. But I think in addition,
to that now more so than ever is just really paying attention to also the inflammation
when it comes to food and diet and, you know, just help me put me in the best position
when it comes to recovery.
So I think that's the thing with the aging process that becomes the most challenging
is just your ability to give up each and every day and do it again and again at the same
level.
And so at that point it becomes all about recovery.
Yeah, the training is important, but the recovery is even more important.
I think that's the information that we have, and that's something I think we've become a lot better at over the years.
Drew, a lot of players on your team are mid-20s.
They don't have your life experience.
They may not have kids.
Be married.
Listen to different music.
How do you stay connected to 23-year-olds?
I feel like I have to teach them about the 80s, you know, and about like 90s alternative music, right?
So, you know, so when I get in the weight room, that's the stuff I turn on.
And it's, you know, it's my opportunity to teach them, you know, about Pearl Jam, right, and Nirvana, and talking about the 80s a little bit, you know, kind of like the hair bands and that kind of thing, you know, Metallica.
Yeah.
So, you know, it's, you know, they teach me, they teach me, you know, kind of the, you know, the millennial stuff.
And then I teach them in the old school stuff. So it's a good deal we got going.
Yeah, Nirvana's my hometown, Aberdeen, Westport, Washington, know them well.
Last year, after that, no call lost to the Rams, very quickly after that,
you came out and made a point of saying, all right, it's awful, we got to go back to work.
And I theorized at the time, I said, this is what leaders do, folks, because it's very,
football makes us crazy, we love it, we get emotional.
You don't want to lose games because of a loss of the Rams.
Did you make a point and to really address that and say, let's get over it,
knowing you live in one of the craziest, wildest, most loyal NFL cities in the country?
No, I'm asking myself as much as I was to anybody else.
You know, that was painful.
I think it will always be painful.
You know, that thing never really leaves you.
But listen, you've got one or two choices.
You know, you can go in the tank or you can find a way to have a motivation and add some fuel to the fire.
and turn it into a positive somehow some way.
So I've chosen to take that road and that mindset.
And I see the opportunity we have in front of us as a team.
I love our team.
I love our locker room.
I feel like we've got a great window of opportunity here,
and I want to see us take full of theirs of it.
If you look at what's happening in the NFL, Drew, it's pretty remarkable.
Even five or six years ago, first-round quarterbacks were failing
half the time. Of the last 14 first round
quarterbacks, only one has really struggled Paxton Lynch.
The difference between college and pro, it's shrinking.
Now, with you, you are so deft at the NFL offenses.
But are you and Sean, are you stealing stuff from college?
On Saturday night, do you see stuff and bring it in?
Or are you still more, do you believe much more about the NFL offense?
I think we're stealing stuff for Kaysen Hill, maybe not for me.
Yeah.
No, listen, you know, it's, I think to your point about, you know, these young quarterbacks coming in
and being able to adjust to the NFL game so quickly, I think it's a credit to just the amount
of reps that these guys are getting with these seven-on-seven passing academies and everything.
I mean, guys are just so much more advanced now coming in.
And I think there's also a lot of crossover between NFL and college in regards to coaching.
And so you just get these schemes that are hopping back and forth.
And then you have some of these unique players like Kyler Murray, you know, who comes in.
And, you know, that system in Arizona is being created for him, right, and utilized his strengths.
And, you know, Cliff Kingsbury, who, oddly enough, I played against in high school, is bringing in, you know,
this system to fit him, to suit him, you know, to build around him.
So, you know, that's just, I think that's one of the reasons why these guys, I think,
are coming in and they're so well prepared and there's a level of maturity that's coming
along with that as well.
Different than, you know, guys, when I came in and it was, it was like, hey, you're going
to back up for a few years and then, you know, you get your opportunity after that
once you kind of get the hang of it. But, yeah, the game has almost just been fast-tracked in that way.
Is Sean Payton's system offensively complicated?
Or does he simplify it?
Or because you have the ability to catalog so much stuff because of your history,
would you call it a complicated system?
For somebody coming in for the first time, yes.
Yeah, absolutely.
But if you've been here for a little bit and you've been able to see the evolution,
you know, I would equate it to like this.
It's like coming in and having to go.
to calculus 303 and skip algebra and geometry and everything else, right?
You kind of have to start off at square and go through the levels in order to get to
where we're up.
And so, you know, listen, inevitably, you know, you have young players that you just have
to get up to speed, you know, and it just takes time, takes time on task.
And, you know, that's why I think this camp has been exciting compared to last year.
You know, last year, listen, you go through the season, and we had a ton of young guys
playing.
Yeah.
A ton of young guys to skill position.
Again, it takes time.
And so I've seen the light bulb now come on for these guys in year two through this training camp.
And then that's been exciting because then you begin to open up the playbook a little bit and see the possibility.
Well, you've got as good an offensive line as I think you've ever had.
You've got a running game, a star-wide receiver, and a brilliant head coach, Drew Breeze.
By the way, I've got a Jimmy John sandwich chain restaurant next to my house.
And you have, you've got to tell us about Jimmy John.
running a campaign with Jimmy Johnson. First of all, I'm at Jimmy
John's franchisee. We actually have 18 stores.
And nine of them here, New Orleans, nine in South Bend,
and continue to grow and expand as we speak.
So I've been a fan of Jimmy Johnson's college.
We have a really cool campaign going as Jimmy Johns corporate,
where we are actually going to buy a home for someone
inside a Jimmy John's delivery zone, up to $250,000.
So go to Jimmyjohn's.com to enter.
You just write a short 250-word essay as to why you
should be inside the Jimmy John's delivery zone.
You know, we're very strict about our delivery zones, right?
It's five minutes, which allows us to deliver your sandwich as fast and fresh as possible.
You know, we master delivery.
That's what we do.
That's what we're the absolute best at.
And so we're always fighting for every into our delivery zone,
but we recognize there's some Jimmy John's super fans that are outside the delivery zone.
So we've got to find ways to get them inside the delivery zone.
So this is a fun contest that we're running to get a super fan.
a home inside of Jimmy Johnson's delivery.
Drew, 11-time Pro Bowler, a first ballot Hall of Famer you will be.
19th year for the Saints.
Absolute pleasure talking to you.
Get back to practice. Thanks, bud.
Got, Kyle. Thanks, man.
You bet. Drew Breeze.
You guys been playing a long time, 19 years.
We talk about Brady. We got Drew Breeze doing the same thing in the NFC.
Just unbelievable.
You know, and Drew, like Brady, has had one year where he had a major injury.
and from that point on comes in, boom, boom, boom,
checks all the boxes, gets all the yards, gets all the touchdowns.
I always say we always compare Aaron Rogers and Brady.
I think Breeze and Brady is the more realistic comparison.
Well, yeah, because, I mean, they're both played so long
that they're going to own so many NFL records,
some of them just on volume, obviously some on greatness.
I always said Aaron reminds me much more.
I think when it's all said and done,
we'll compare Aaron to Big Ben and we'll compare Breeze to Brady.
you're just going to look at a record book someday
and Breeze is going to have like 17 records.
Brady's going to have 22.
And Drew's just such a low-key guy in general.
Drew like Brady, I think when you think of him,
you think about leadership qualities.
Here's the NFL records held by Drew Breeze right now.
Career passing yards.
Good God.
74,000. Career completions.
Completion percentage.
Single season completion percentage.
Consecutive games with a touchdown pass.
54.
Lord.
Career passing yards.
300-yard games, 400-yard games, seasons leading the league in passing yards,
consecutive 4,000-yard seasons, 5,000 yards.
So that's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9.
He's got 11 record so far.
See, I think that will compare much more favorably to Brady.
Yeah, where Aaron, whose career won't go quite as long due to some injuries,
will end up being Big Ben.
Has a Super Bowl.
We think he should have won a couple more, battled a little bit with injuries on his head coach.
unbelievable all-time unique transcendent talent,
but we'll feel like he left a few wins
or maybe a Super Bowl on the floor.
Right.
I never feel that with Breeze and Brady.
I think Breeze has squeezed that sponge
for every ounce of talent he's got.
It's absolutely a better comparison.
Yeah.
Coming up next, the AP college football top 25 came out,
and my takeaway is this could be the one year
with the greatest team in college football,
history. Not saying the greatest dynasty. I'm saying the greatest team ever. That's coming up.

I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that nest was going to be.
Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive.
Wait, what sex?
Dating at 45.
How can it be getting naked at 50 with the new guy?
That one's kind of hard, you know?
Well, that's lighting.
They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to.

Hey, Ms. Parker.

By the way, the preseason AP Top 25 came out yesterday.
Clemson won, Bama, two, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State, top five.
I don't have any real arguments with any of it.
Oregon's 11 and Auburn is 16, yet I think Auburn is favored over Oregon in week one.
It's a neutral site, so Auburn's favored in Vegas over Oregon, but Oregon's rated higher than Auburn.
I like Auburn to win that game, but have a tougher season than Oregon.
So I don't make much of this stuff.
I'd probably have Texas is 10.
I'd probably have Texas a little higher.
Notre Dame's 9.
I'd probably have them a little lower.
I think LSU is a little underrated this year.
So I don't, I don't, there's nothing that jumps out to me.
USC is rated 45th.
Tells you how far that program's fallen.
That's the one closest to me, 45th in the country.
I mean, they're behind Iowa, Iowa State.
Both Iowa schools.
That tells you the state of USC football.
I will say this.
I think Clemson has a chance to be an all-time great team.
In the games in which Trevor Lawrence started and finished last year, none were close.
20 was the closest, and he was a freshman.
He's now a sophomore.
They won the ACC Championship by 32.
They beat Notre Dame by 27.
They beat Bama by 28.
They beat Louisville by 61.
They beat Florida, Florida State by 50.
He is the best college quarterback I have seen since Andrew Luck.
I didn't watch Carson Wentz and Patrick Mahomes enough to make that judgment.
I saw him play at 17 in a high school camp.
He is the best high school quarterback talent I think I've probably ever seen.
Andrew Luck was the last college quarterback I saw as a sophomore,
and I made the opinion very obvious.
I said, this guy is going to be a first ballot hall famer.
I don't say that about college quarterbacks.
I didn't say it about golf, Mahomes.
I don't say that.
I don't go out on the air and say,
this college sophomore is going to be a Hall of Fame quarterback.
I just don't do it.
I said that with Andrew Luck.
Andrew Luck went to Stanford.
Now, Stanford doesn't have nearly the players of Clemson.
It's got incredibly stringent academic requirements.
Andrew Luck went to Stanford.
They don't have Clemson's talent.
And remember, Stanford was rebuilding in Andrew Luck's first year.
And Andrew Luck was 31 and 7 as a starting quarterback.
This kid's never lost.
In fact, the only close game he's ever been involved in at the college level is Syracuse.
A good program, not stupendous.
They went about 55% of their games over the last 30 years.
They have a very good head coach, very good staff.
But he didn't finish that game.
He got whacked.
He got hurt.
So I think Clemson has a chance.
They have the first or second best running back, first or second best head coach,
first or second best wide receiver.
They're rebuilding their defensive front,
but Clemson always brings in all sorts of dudes that can play up there.
They won't be quite as dominant on the defensive line.
They've got a very workable schedule.
I think they have a chance to be the best college team of all time.
And now, by the way, Alabama's got the best dynasty I've ever seen.
But there's not one team, if I said to you, what's the best Alabama team ever?
They've had a lot of average quarterbacks.
They have been sort of a predictable play with the lead, well-coached.
The best players are mostly on defense with one great receiver and one great back.
But they've been at the quarterback position solid.
Manage it.
Don't make a lot of mistakes.
This kid is basically Clemson as Alabama's talent,
but were the best college quarterback of my life.
I told you when Andrew Luck came out.
John Elway is the only quarterback I saw playing college and thought,
oh, that's what a Hall of Famer looks like in the NFL.
And it's not like Elway won a ton in college.
He was just bigger, stronger, faster, arm, brain.
And then I said Andrew Luck, I'm like, oh, sophomore year, that's going to be a first bout.
This kid's better, I think, than both.
Arm, size, delivery, everything.
He's really an all-time talent.
So Clemson went 15 and 0 last year, had very few close games down the stretch.
Once he got better, nobody could compete.
Bama couldn't compete.
Notre Dame couldn't compete.
Florida State couldn't compete.
ACC Championship couldn't compete.
Nobody could compete with them.
And if you look at their schedule this year, you know, they'll play South Carolina.
from the SEC, that's a tough one.
I think they've got a game some here with Texas A&M.
They host them early.
I mean, their schedule's got your landmines, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, South Carolina.
Those are all loseable games.
You know, they have to go to Carolina.
You know, these are all loseable games.
So their schedule, it's not daunting, but it's not Cupcake.
They're going to make it look Cupcake.
I think this kid is absolutely incredible.
And Baker Mayfield would like him because he's a winner.
Baker Mayfield didn't like Daniel Jones.
He's a loser.
17 and 19 at Duke.
Baker would love this guy because this guy wins.
And I do feel like as great as Alabama's been,
I do feel like Clemson now is this morning the better program.
They have a better staff, a better quarterback.
I think they have more momentum.
I think they have more stability in their program.
They're not losing.
You know, it's not a revolving door of assistant coaches and coordinators every
year. I think Clemson's now the best program.
I'm sure Clemson's going to end up in the national championship. I feel very strongly.
If Trevor Lawrence is healthy, I think they'll score their way to a national championship.
I think Alabama will probably end up there, but they could get knocked off by Georgia.
They could get knocked out by LSU. You know, there's always a Mississippi school gives Alabama
trouble. But I think we're looking at potentially, if they stay healthy, the greatest college
football team we've seen. I think they're going to be
that dominant this year.
And me saying that, they'll get all overconfident
and, you know, get whacked by Georgia Tech.
But I think they're going to go 15 and own.
I think they're going to roll 14 of the teams they play.
I think they're going to just roll through it by 20, 30, 40,
and 50 points.

Joy Taylor is joining me.
I'll tell you, Baker, Baker, Newsmaker, GQ, another article saying all sorts of stuff.
He called out Daniel Jones, Joy.
It was unprovoked.
He wasn't asked about Daniel Jones.
There was no question about the Giants or Daniel Jones,
but unprovoked.
he said, I can't believe the New York Giants drafted Daniel Jones because he's not a winner.
So it's like...
It's kind of mean.
Here's the thing.
I keep hearing this about it.
There's two things I keep hearing about Baker Mayfield.
One is, well, he's perfect for Cleveland.
Volatile.
Is that perfect for Cleveland?
He's called out his coach.
He's called out a teammate.
He's called out now a New York Giant.
I would say that's kind of a volatile personality.
Now, I do think, I understand.
why Cleveland puts their arms around him, it's Cleveland.
Their standards are incredibly low.
I think Belichick would tell him, shut your mouth.
Don't say this.
I think Sean McVeigh would say, zip it up.
You haven't done anything.
I think all the legendary coaches in the NFL would tell Baker if he was their guy,
stop talking.
You're embarrassing yourself.
Patrick Malam is the winner.
You're a loser.
You were 6-7 and 1 last year.
You won one game out of Ohio.
So he ripped Daniel Jones.
He also comes out, and he keeps saying this in all these articles.
He goes, I'm not cookie cutter.
Okay, I do it my own way.
I believe if you're any good, I don't think you're going to have any success unless you think that.
If you go out there thinking you're going to fail, you're going to fail, which is just the truth.
You don't have to keep reminding us of this.
The guy that tells me how confident he is is generally masking something.
He's projecting something.
You know, the tough guy, the Dennis Rodman's end up crying a lot.
The TOs end up crying a lot when you put a camera in front of them with a little stress.
I think I like my quarterbacks to be firemen, putting out fires, not accelerators, adding to them,
because I think the NFL just gives you volatility constantly.
Even the L.A. Rams last year, middle of the season.
Oh, crap, we lose Cooper Cup.
Oh, crap, we lose Todd Gurley.
And that was a team that ended up in the Super Bowl.
The L.A. Rams had major stress.
They lost Jared Goff's favorite target.
Cooper Cup, gone for the year.
Then all of a sudden, Todd Gurley has got early.
stages of arthritis.
So that's a team that you think, oh, everything was good for the Rams.
Major stress on the offensive side of the ball.
I mean, a year ago, New England, look at the situation they had.
By the way, New England last year in the middle of the season.
Tom Brady, remember that two-game stretch, Steelers, Dolphins?
Tom Brady got hurt.
They had injuries through the season.
Sony-Michel got hurt.
So Cleveland last year is a great example of what happens in the NFL.
Their coordinator gets fired.
Their head coach gets fired.
They have four of.
ugly blowout losses.
That's called the NFL.
That's not atypical.
The NFL is constantly giving you volatility.
Because it's the one sport where you have injuries.
I mean, I'm looking at camp reports this morning.
Everybody's banged out.
San Francisco, the Jets, the Raiders, everybody's banged up.
And so I don't think a guy that comes across
this sort of brash, confident, and volatile calling out people
is necessarily a perfect fit for an organization that has a history of all sorts of
of volatility. And I do think if Baker was with the Patriots or the Steelers or the Rams or the Eagles,
they'd tell them to zip it up. But I think in Cleveland, what are they going to say? It's Cleveland.
Like he owns the town right now. And they also added OBJ, volatile.
Olivier Vernon hasn't had double-digit sacks in like seven years. Sheldon Richardson can be
volatile. You have a GM who's outspoken, a little volatile. Jimmy Haslam fires coaches.
GMs, he can be volatile.
I think Cleveland feels volatile to me.
And I, again, I think what you need in the NFL is a fireman at quarterback.
Put out the fires.
Stability, quiet confidence.
I don't think volatility is the answer.
So we'll see how it works out.
I'll take Deshawn Watson, Sam Donald, Jared Goff, sustainable 15-year personalities
over calling out quarterbacks, teammates, coaches.
And I just want to remind everybody.
I just want to remind everybody on Cleveland.
This is what's remarkable to me.
So Cleveland last year was one in five against winning teams.
Was blown out by four teams in the AFC.
Not just blown out.
They were blown out by the Chargers.
They were blown out by the Texans.
They were blown out by the Steelers.
They were blown out by Houston.
You know, those are teams they're going to have to get through.
They were blown out four times in the AFC.
And their wins were overwhelmingly narrow.
Pittsburgh, by the way,
is the opposite.
They had several blowout wins
and their losses were all narrow.
They narrowly lost to Kansas City,
Los Angeles,
Denver, New Orleans.
So just say that out loud.
Cleveland was blown out many times
and then narrowly beat
mostly bad teams.
Atlanta.
You know, Cincinnati, bad teams.
Pittsburgh blew out several teams
and then narrowly lost.
To some good team,
some bad teams. So just say that out loud.
So Pittsburgh goes
9, 6, and 1. They go to Kansas
City, get a starting corner.
They draft what appears to be the best
linebacker in the draft. They add Mark
Barron another linebacker. They get
the drama out of the locker room.
They beat good teams, blew out
some, and lost close, narrow
games, 9, 6, and 1.
But I'm supposed to
like the team with a rookie
head coach that couldn't beat winning
teams that was blown out four times
because they added OBJ who can't stay healthy,
and Olivier Vernon, who's never been elite.
Miami, he had one big sack year in Miami.
He didn't do anything in New York.
Then he added Sheldon Richardson.
What did he do?
He's been a difficult guy in locker rooms.
That's why he keeps bouncing around the league with all his talent.
So I just, sometimes I just don't understand it.
I don't understand how you can look at Pittsburgh's results,
what they added, the drama that left,
and then look at Cleveland's results, couldn't beat good teams.
What they added, more volatility, name over substance.
OBJ, 32 games, hasn't played the last 16.
Olivier Vernon gives you about six and a half sacks a year.
I don't get it.
Like I just coach Pittsburgh, quarterback Pittsburgh, O-line Pittsburgh, owner Pittsburgh, GM Pittsburgh,
results last year, Pittsburgh.
I don't get it.
I don't understand it.
I've just, foo, over my head.
Pittsburgh's going to win the division.
Pittsburgh's a better team.
Pittsburgh has the better coach.
quarterback O line.
I could be wrong on this.
Didn't Pittsburgh leave the NFL in Sacks last year?
So they got a better D-line.
I don't get it.
Over my head.
I saw this story.
I do not get this.
James Harrison coming up and Will Blackman today.
NBA did a poll.
I just want to do this quickly.
Steph Curry, all the rookies voted on this.
Steph Curry is none of the NBA rookie's favorite player.
Didn't get a vote.
Pascal Syakum got a vote.
Devin Booker, Kauai Leonard, James Hardin, Kevin Durant, LeBron James.
Now, I just first want to say this.
It is literally insulting.
As great as LeBron James is,
LeBron didn't change the game.
The LeBron's greatest addition to the NBA is player mobility, free agency.
LeBron's made it a very mobile leak.
In fact, not only can you move now, you're called crazy if you don't move.
So LeBron's greatest addition to the NBA is player mobility.
Nobody's tried to copy LeBron's game.
Nobody has tried to mimic his game.
He didn't eliminate centers.
In fact, good centers have given him trouble.
He hasn't changed the college game.
LeBron's greatest impact on the NBA has been player mobility.
And that's a real thing, and he deserves credit.
And LeBron's a great player.
Steph Curry has changed the college game.
He's eliminated centers.
He's the only unanimous MVP.
He holds the record for the most wins in a regular season.
He also was the soul of the last dynasty in the NBA.
Like, does everybody get the impact of Steph Curry?
I don't know why he's not popular.
Maybe he's too much of a family guy.
He plays golf.
He's boring.
I don't know what it is.
Maybe, you know, he may lack a cool factor.
He may lack a physical attribute.
He's not big.
He's not strong.
He doesn't have the dog or the intensity of Westbrook.
He's not the silent assassin like Kauai Leonard.
He's not as imposing physically as Kevin Durant or LeBron James.
He doesn't have the musical career like Damien Lillard.
He doesn't have a 70.9.
I don't think like Devin Booker.
I don't get it.
Like this is one of these.
This is another one.
Just like the Brown should beat the Steelers.
This one, foo, over my head.
I don't get it.
I don't get what players don't like about him.
I've never understood it.
He has literally changed the game of basketball.
LeBron has it.
LeBron's just great.
LeBron's just amazing.
But he didn't change the way we shoot.
He didn't change the analytics.
I mean, LeBron doesn't even have a position.
Like he's kind of a positionless guy.
He's the great Swiss Army knife in NBA history.
He can do everything.
And by the way, I think LeBron's first or second best player all time, you know, has had political impact, mobility impact.
I'm not denying that has a television ratings impact.
But the fact that Steph Curry did not get a single vote from the rookies about as their favorite player, not a vote.
I don't get it.
I just, I don't see what.
It's kind of surprising he didn't get a vote.
Not a vote.
I didn't have to win it.
Not a vote.
Is he too square?
Is it golf?
Too much family?
Not imposing.
Not enough dog.
I just think that LeBron is the MJ of that generation.
No, I get that.
Not a vote?
It feels like you should get a vote.
Like a vote?
You know, it's like if you did music,
Prince doesn't have to win,
but Prince would get a vote as most talented artists.
Prince probably would win most talented artists.
He played like 60 instruments.
Yeah, like he changed music.
Like there's a lot of people that mimicked Prince.
Yes, and still do.
Say Bob Dylan.
Bob Dylan.
People, I didn't like his voice.
People mimic Bob Dylan.
He was the inspiration for a lot of artists.
So was Prince.
You'd get a vote.
Steph's the inspiration.
Go to a high school gym.
All they do is shoot threes.
That's Steph.
Go to a college guy.
conservative college coaches jack up 35-3s a game.
That's Steph.
Maybe it's just warriors fatigue.
I mean, I just, boom.
Don't get it.
Coming up next, James Harrison, who gave me a hair massage this morning.
We'll get into that.

Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Destin,

Hey, I'm Deanna Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life one hot flash and hormonal crying jag at a time.
You ladies know what I mean.
I'll bet you a perimenopausal chin here you do.
So let's talk about it.
Join me on my new podcast.
How hard can it be with Deanna Maria Riva, where I call on my Gen X squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate midlife's most fantastic BS.
All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own.
I was like, what the hell is that?
I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that Ness was going to be.
Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive.
Wait, what sex?
Dating at 45.
How hard can it be getting naked at 50 with the new guy?
That one's kind of hard, you know?
Well, that's lighting.
They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try.
So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter, and dive into it, unfiltered and unbothered and ask,
how hard can it be?
I cannot believe I'm about to say this out loud in public.

What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Look.
Quarterback on office blue with 42.
Hey, Wreck, my mama want you to weigh better.
What?
Where's she at?
Hey, Miss Parker.

Undefeated Brandon Figueroa and Javier Chaconne go toe to toe.
Don't miss all the hard-hitting action Saturday
at 10 p.m. Eastern on FS1 and the Fox Sports Act.
14 knockouts and 19 fights for Brandon Figueroa.
His younger brother of former lightweight champ, Omar of Figueroa.
James Harrison, 15 years in the NFL,
undrafted out of Kent State,
cut by the Ravens, went overseas to the XFL Europe,
and then became an absolute legend,
multiple Super Bowls, multiple Pro Bowls,
defensive player of the year,
all-time sacks leader for Pittsburgh at 80 and a half.
It's a pleasure to have you in.
It's funny when you watch these camps
and you see a lot of stars that are drafted high and undrafted stars.
You're a great picture of what the NFL is.
Undrafted, you didn't have a linear route, and you end up being an absolute legend.
So I want to talk about somebody who I think is a legendary talent, Antonio Brown, the helmet issue.
I get it.
It's equipment.
What do you make, though, of a second grievance filed?
I think it's just time to let it go.
for me, I believe it comes down to him wanting to be right to win.
I think since he got his way in Pittsburgh, he got out of there how he wanted to get out of there.
He got to where he wanted to get.
I'm feeling like this is maybe a situation where he wants to have it his way.
Even if he wins, which he won't, you're going to get your helmet for another year at best.
But you won't win that because the CBA says that anything that,
Godell feels like he wants to do.
I mean, I'm going to be outlandish and say, like, if he wanted to make a fine for your socks being low, 100,000,
could.
That's what he could do.
That's the law.
That's how it goes.
Tom Brady, he won, and then it came back through.
They went and they looked at that wording, and that wording says, I'm God.
Whatever I say goes.
And they read it just as his wrote, and Tom had to serve his suspension.
Yeah.
When would players, I mean, because players generally don't get into other players money,
and they would support A.B.
Because he's a great player.
Would there be a turning point, though, in a locker room like Oakland, if you go O and 2,
if you go 1 and 4, would there be a point when players could turn on an outspoken player?
I think you're at a point now where I believe the players should have at least conversations.
And I think A, B, should understand, like, right now, it's not your team.
It's not your teammates.
It's the NFL.
And you not coming to practice and working, you're not helping the team get better.
You are a tremendously talented athlete, receiver.
I mean, no one has the numbers he's had in these last whatever years has been.
But your football character is not in question.
We're talking about, like, it's more personal now.
This seems to be more of a personal issue of him.
him wanting to do what it is that he wants to do.
And right now, you've gotten everything that you want.
You know, you got guaranteed money.
You know, you're where you want to be.
You're no longer in the situation that, you know, you didn't like.
And I feel like you just got to let it go.
Everyone had to, I had to change my helmet.
In 2009 or 10, I had to switch out of helmets.
You didn't love it?
No, I didn't like it.
But if you're blessed enough to play this game long enough,
you're going to have to switch out of helmets.
Let me ask you this.
Are you surprised?
You know A, B, in that locker room.
Did Pittsburgh create some of this monster?
Go back to his early career.
Did you see this coming?
I won't say I've seen this situation of a grievance over a helmet coming.
But, I mean, if you go back to Pittsburgh, of course, some of the things that they did over there that, you know, they allowed, has given him the idea that, you know what, that's something that maybe is right.
It's not, it's not wrong.
you know, it's normal, it's normal operations.
And I think right now he's starting to see that, you know, over in Oakland,
a lot of this may not be normal operation.
I mean, Mike Tomlin, the criticism I've always had of Mike Tomlin.
He's very pro player.
Sometimes I don't think the Steelers are buttoned down enough for my taste.
They're very much into emotion.
I don't think in-game sometimes, too many penalties, too many blown assignments.
Could I read into that that,
that's kind of the locker room.
It's run by the players, not the coach.
No, I won't say it's so much ran by the players,
but if you're allowed to do something
and over the course of time, that behavior is not corrected,
then you assume it's right and you assume nothing is wrong with it.
Yeah.
The, you know, the assignments thing, that's just X's and O's
and what is being taught, you know.
Like when I was in Pittsburgh and we played New England the first game, you know, we had a situation where Gronka's just running free, you know, nobody's on him.
Well, we ended up getting two different calls on that same defense.
Half defense was playing one call, half defense was playing another call.
So that's where you had things where guys had missed assignments and, you know, communication.
It has to be A is a no matter what, no matter who tell.
as you rather sure coach, the de-coordinator, or whoever it may be.
And I think that's not being communicated well enough across the board.
Okay, a couple of quick questions about, first of all, Jimmy G.
Hadn't played in a year coming off an injury.
I haven't had a lot of injuries in my career.
I got into a motorcycle accident as a kid,
and it took me like two years to get on that motorcycle and not think about it.
You do think about injuries.
Did you think he was thinking about the knee last night?
He could say that he wasn't, but in the back of your mind, it's even a couple plays where, you know,
he see him like half stutter step with it and not really, you know, put it out there.
But he had a non-contact injury.
That means nobody hit him for this to happen.
So for him to sit here and say that it's less than a year later that you aren't worried about that,
that that didn't affect you any, I think that would be a little bit of a stretch from the truth.
Did you have an injury and think about it?
I had high ankle sprain and I thought about it.
Like that was not even, you know, that was a six-week thing.
But coming back, like somebody fell at my feet.
The first, I would kick the ankle out the way.
Like, oh, I wanted to get hit again.
Right, right.
So for him to say he's not thinking about that and he actually had a major surgery.
I don't believe that's true.
Baker Mayfield, GQ Magazine calling out Daniel Jones.
He called out teammate Duke Johnson earlier this year.
He called out Hugh Jackson.
He's putting it out there.
What do you make of it?
You know, he's just either a confident, a very confident person or a very cocky person.
Right now they're feeling good.
You know, he's won six games.
I think that's more games than they've won in the last three years.
Maybe twice as many games as they won in the last three years.
So they're getting a lot of, you know, he's getting a lot of praise right now.
And, you know, they're the team that they're talking about.
He has weapons now, you know.
It's no longer going to be, well, he doesn't have this, he doesn't have that.
have major weapons now. The defense is doing well. Yeah, the D-line's good. Yeah, yeah, the defense is doing
well. So now it's put up or shut up and anything less than a playoff appearance from the Browns right now
as far as the way they're talking, the way he's talking, you need to shut up. Yeah, it would be a little
bit of a disappointment, right? Very disappointing. Yeah, when you put yourself out there,
if they do win a Super Bowl, it'll be the greatest accomplishment, arguably ever. It'll make Baker a legend.
If they miss the playoffs, they'll be the joke of the league. They'll be mocked.
and made fun of.
Right.
You got guys talking about, you know, they see them as the favorite in the North.
Like, I don't, I don't see that.
Either do I.
It's the Cleveland Browns, you know, until they show me something, it's still the Cleveland Browns.
Yeah, I think Pittsburgh's got better players.
Oh, yeah.
I think they have a better player.
All around, yes.
Yes, I think they do.
Look at Pittsburgh's defense.
Pittsburgh's whole defense is nothing but first and second rounders or guys that they, you know, brought in with a big contract.
I believe the only starters on that defense that's out of the first or second round is,
Javon Hardgrave who actually had
eight sacks last year and Vince
Williams. Their offensive lines
the best in the AFC. Big Benza
Hall of Famer. Ju-Jew
Smith-Schuster is very good.
James Washington's had... He's coming around.
He is really showing... He's showing promise
right now, especially from what he was
doing last year. By the way, so
Jerry Jones came out and made a joke about
Zeeke's contract. Zeeke said
I thought it was disrespectful.
You got to be careful about
talking about guys' money. Right.
In the mob, there's always like, don't do heroin and don't mess with people's kids.
And in football, don't mess with the guy's money.
Right.
How did the Jerry Jones comment land for you?
I could see where, you know, Zeke and his agent were at, like, we're talking about my career.
We're talking about this, you know, a huge contract.
It's not a laughing matter to me.
It's not a joke.
At the same time, I see where Jerry was trying to make light of it.
You know, he even turned to the camera and winked and said Zeke.
And, you know, he was like, it's not a joke.
your expense, you know, meaning it's not going to be at your, you're going to get your money.
He also continues to say that Zeke is going to be here.
He is not, we're not trying to replace Zeke.
So I see it both ways, but like I said, you can't joke when you're talking about money
because he's sitting here, you know, he's training, he's waiting to get this phone call
so that he could get this money and you're, you know, you're throwing around jokes.
James Harrison joining us.
James, did you ever have a holdout?
No.
Did you ever miss a camp?
No.
Was some of that because you were undrafts,
and you always felt you had to overachieve and get to camp early?
I never felt I had to get to camp early, but my drive was I got to make the team.
You felt that at the end?
Yeah, I felt that every year going in was, you know, I had to make the team.
You know, I had to come in here and prove, you know, last year is last year.
I have to go in here and prove again this year that I can do exactly what it is that I did last year.
Did you enjoy camp?
I can't say that I enjoy camp.
That would be an absolute.
I hate a camp.
Why?
Camp was almost like, I don't know what jail is like.
I don't ever want to feel like you know what jail is like.
But, you know, that's the time where, you know, you got castas in jail and they're writing love letters.
I ain't, I'm going to act right.
We're going to get married when we get out.
Like, that's camp.
You're not, you're in a tiny little room.
Tiny little room.
Hot.
Yeah, no, it's not really hot.
We got, we got good AC.
But, yeah, you're in a little tiny room.
You got a roommate.
You're sharing a bathroom, you know.
It's not the place that I want to be.
Good seeing you, bud.
You too.
James Harrison, 15 years.
Linebacker, pro-bowler, Super Bowl, Joy with the News.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
So, Baker Mayfield has rarely been one to hide his feelings since he entered the league.
But he might have outdone himself this time.
He was talking to Clay Skipper for a GQ feature.
We'll have Clay on later in the show.
Cool.
He sounded off with some unsolicited criticism of Daniel Jones, who is, was drafted by the Giants this year.
He said, I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones, blows my mind.
Some people overthink it.
That's where people go wrong.
They forget you've got to win.
Now he's referring to Daniel Jones, obviously, college.
At Duke, where it's hard to get in and they don't have NFL players everywhere.
I just feel like this might be his, this clearly is his opinion.
It's not might be his opinion.
It's clearly his opinion of Daniel Jones.
And to be fair to Baker, a lot of people not only agreed with him the night of the draft,
but still have a lot of questions about Daniel Jones, including his own team, owner, and coach,
because he's not been named the starter.
But he was just drafted.
Like, who knows what can happen?
People would have people said that about Aaron Rogers or Tom Brady going.
in the sixth round or Antonio Brown
going in the sixth round or James Harrison
going undrafted.
We've all been very critical of Daniel Jones
and I think that's fair. It felt like a reach
and we don't really
know what he's going to be yet.
And I have no problem with Baker being
outspoken and the GQ and the
furs and whatever he wants to do.
Okay, I love that. I love personalities.
We love personalities because we love content
and everybody doesn't have to be the same
cookie cutter as he says quarterback.
That said, I do think that there's a balance that you have to walk with being, like, arrogance to me is not a bad thing to have when you are a professional athlete.
Muhammad Ali was accused of being arrogant.
And I mean, it's one of the greatest parts of his persona.
He gave us quotes that are historical because of that.
But one, you have to back it up, which we have not seen enough of a sample size of what you can actually do in the NFL yet to say that you can back it up.
and kudos to the success that you have had in the league so far,
considering how you went in.
But I just think you have to walk a balance with how you criticize other players in the league
and putting things like that out there.
Like he's not in your division.
He's a rookie quarterback.
What do you gain by taking a jab at him?
Well, I think if I'm Daniel Jones, I never forget that.
I take that quote.
I put it on my mirror.
I think actually those kind of comments actually,
actually help the person who's criticized?
Sure.
I think Daniel Jones...
I remember everything that's ever been said about me by every individual person.
Yeah. That's how I am.
A chip on the shoulder of person.
And I get that.
And Baker's sort of that way, too, being a walk on and having to prove himself and
undersized and all that.
I just don't, I feel like there's...
I don't want to be as sensitive Sally, but I just feel like there's a bit of a brotherhood
you walk there with like, lift other people up.
You know, you can be arrogant and confident in yourself without having to take jabs at other people.
It's weird.
When you criticize people...
in your same industry at your same position.
It would be like me going after other radio guys.
Right, right.
Like I can criticize an athlete, but I'm not in the industry.
But if I was criticizing other radio people publicly, it wouldn't land well.
Like people would come to the defense of the people I was criticized.
Even if I was much more profound or prominent in my industry,
when quarterbacks rip other quarterbacks, there is sort of a brotherhood.
Like musicians.
Right.
There is actors.
You kind of want to be supportive.
Within your industry,
You've got to be very tough about Jeremy Irons can be great.
If he started taking shots at other actors, it wouldn't land well in the acting community.
Right.
And to be fair, we get paid to give our opinion about athletes.
It's literally our job to do that.
So it's not coming from a hypocritical place.
If we did a media podcast or a media radio show where it was our job to critique other media members,
then that's what we would be paid to do.
So that's what we would do.
It just feels like a space that you want to stay out of because people remember that and they'll hold it against you.
if and when you fail, which as we know in sports is going to happen.
So Pete Carroll is one of the oldest head coaches in the NFL, and he is the oldest head coach
in the NFL, I'm sorry, and he's 25 years older than Brady, but he still calls Brady
one of his heroes for nutrition.
Carol said this to Peter King.
Tom's one of my heroes in the fact that he has taken a cutting edge approach to nutrition
and well-being, and it just shows you.
You can feel okay.
If we keep eating the way we eat and we keep going the way we go,
then you are going to feel good.
You've got to work at it.
Yes, you do.
We were talking about that with Drew Brees earlier,
and Tom Brady's obviously considered the industry standard for how quarterbacks.
He doesn't drink a beer during the season.
I had a couple last night.
I mean, it's...
Two?
A couple.
I can't drink more than two beers.
Yeah, I mean, that makes sense.
I mean, alcohol is not good for you necessarily,
especially in excess and during the season.
He's all about preservation and recovery.
That's part of the biggest part as you age in sports,
is recovery is not as quick.
And if you drink alcohol,
that's obviously going to impede that.
But it's interesting with Pete Carroll's Sack
because we were talking about this a couple weeks ago.
We're always talking about when Tom Brady's going to retire
and what he's going to do.
And he has such, he's set such a high standard
for how to take care of your body and how to eat
and how to train and how to recover
and just being ahead of all the new trends
and making something that works.
specifically for his body to maintain health.
LeBron has obviously been huge with this,
like having his first major injury this year.
Yeah.
And Brady's really only had one major injury his entire career.
So I think moving into the next phase of his life after football,
Brady's going to be at some place in the industry with that,
not only for athletes, but for everyone.
Finally, Clemson is number one in the AP preseason top 25
for the first time in program history.
That's weird.
Considering how good the program is, that's strange.
Yes.
But Alabama is generally in that space.
But Alabama didn't open the season in the number one in the AP poll for the first time since 2015.
And four of the last five times that Alabama wasn't number one in the preseason AP poll, they went on to win a title.
Well, I think they'll be in the championship game.
Well, yeah, I mean, it's probably going to be in Alabama.
But I know you're very high in Clemson this year.
and everyone isn't that they should be.
Clemson has a great team.
Alabama still has Tua, becomes back healthy.
They still have a great team.
I don't know that it's such a lock for Clemson this year.
I think the SEC is a much tougher road.
LSU, Missouri, Texas, A&M, I think Florida is going to be good.
George is going to be really good.
Whereas I just don't think there's a program.
I mean, listen, Clemson should come into the national championship,
the semifinals.
reasonably rested.
They'll be favored by 24 points to 30 points in all but two of their games.
So, you know, Alabama's going to have to play starters.
Alabama is going to play more physical teams.
Alabama could end up in the semifinal and be down for starters.
Clemson has a chance to rest a lot of players, give a lot of guys reps.
So, I mean, that's the one thing Clemson's got going for him right now.
The ACC is not the best conference.
I don't think it's the second best conference.
I'm not sure it's the third best conference because Florida State's a mess.
Florida State historically has always been really good.
Florida State's a mess.
So who's number two in the ACC?
They don't have one.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not saying Clemson's not going to be dominant this year.
They clearly are.
I'm saying let's not like Alabama to rest just yet.
Yes.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.

GQ writer did that piece on Baker Mayfield where he was confident as ever and took a shot at Daniel Jones, sort of unprovoked.

GQ's the magazine.
It's a bunch of good looking guys who wear clothes, but they do really good interviews.
Clay Skipper writes for them, GQ Magazine.
They have an expose and an interview on Baker Mayfield.
Who does what Baker Mayfield does?
He throws some haymakers.
It's not generally what quarterbacks do in the NFL.
especially young quarterbacks who were one in five last year against winning teams,
but he takes a shot at Daniel Jones and says,
man, I can't believe the New York Giants drafted Daniel Jones.
By the way, Daniel Jones just responded saying, quote,
I think Baker's a great player.
He can throw it and I enjoy watching him play.
Clay Skipper wrote the article.
When he said that about Daniel Jones, Clay, do you think he regretted it?
Or, I mean, you were there.
You saw how it rolled off the tongue.
How did it feel to you?
Well, I think Haymaker might be a little bit of an overstatement.
I don't know.
I don't think.
I think that he was simply responding to seeing a sports center segment about Daniel Jones.
I don't think that he thought it was anything completely out of the ordinary.
I think a lot of people had voiced a similar sentiment.
the Giants took Daniel Jones.
So, yeah, I don't know.
I wouldn't want to speculate whether or not he regrets it,
but in the moment, I think it just felt pretty natural
and an organic reaction to whatever was happening on SportsCenter.
Well, I mean, if Tom Brady would have said that,
I can't believe the Giants drafted Daniel Jones,
we'd say arrogant.
With Baker, it's almost like we've normalized it.
We're like, well, Baker's Baker.
Do you think he's arrogant?
Do you think he's confident?
I mean, how does it land for you when you're sitting there with him?
I certainly think he's confident.
I think if you read the piece, that's sort of a through line throughout it,
is just that he, you know, is going to be himself.
And I think if there's an argument being advanced in the piece,
it's sort of that why wouldn't he be himself?
It has certainly worked out for most of his career.
He talks, you know, he responds directly to the difference between confidence and arrogance.
He says, you know, I think he uses cocky instead of the word.
arrogance, but he says, you know, I believe in myself. Some people think that's cocky, but, you know,
if you don't believe in yourself, you're just going to fail. Like, you've got to think you're
going to win to actually end up winning. So I think he's confident. I don't think he would
characterize himself as arrogant. Having been around him, I would say he's definitely confident. He's
definitely self-assured. I don't know, you know, personally, no, I wouldn't venture to say that
he goes so far as to be arrogant.
you learn about him you didn't know?
That he's not very good at basketball, apparently.
You know, I kept asking him when the last time he wasn't confident was, and he said
playing basketball.
Well, basketball's hard, and he's not huge.
He's not six-seven.
So Paxton Lynch is probably better at him at basketball, that I would say.
When you inquired to do the interview, any pushback or did you feel like this is what
Baker is meant to be. He's going to be our most outspoken quarterback.
Did he, was there any pushback at all, or is that something he really wanted to do?
I actually can't speak to that because we, you know, when we reach out at GQ, we usually,
there's someone who does that for us. So I didn't, I'm not privy to that conversation, honestly.
So I did not, I was not aware of that. But it seemed like it went pretty smoothly. So,
but I will say that I don't think we necessarily went out to him because he's outspoken.
I mean, I think him being outspoken is a part of his sort of overall appeal.
But I think the reason we wanted to do a story on him was just he's sort of an undiable force in the NFL landscape and in sort of the larger sports landscape.
And so he has transcended sports in a way to sort of become a figure in the larger culture.
And so I think that is why we're interested to go out to him and try to understand him a little bit more on how he ticks.
style for most of us we all have to pay for style style
style pays you if you're a musician and entertainer
an athlete OBJ is stylish he's missed
16 of his last 32 games but he gets paid because of not just
production but a projection and how he's cool
and his shoe deal with Baker
is there part of this that is just salesmanship for brand
or do you feel it's all in the up and up it's real he likes it
He likes to take shots.
I mean, you know, and by the way, not everybody's 100% authentic.
I'm not stating he's inauthent, but is some of this just it's good for his brand?
It's making him money.
It's making him relevant.
You mean the overall story or him?
Just taking shot.
Yeah, no, just kind of his personality as a whole.
I mean, yeah.
I mean, I think that he is, it's something he spoke to when he talks about when he was being interviewed by teams before the draft.
he just says what he believes and he's true to himself.
And I think he feels like if he is that way, then the brands and endorsements will follow.
So whether or not he thinks that this GQ story is good ultimately for his brand, I don't know.
I don't want to put words in his mouth, so I won't speak for him.
But yeah, I mean, I think it's a big platform.
But yeah, that would be my answer there.
you like him? I did like him. He's very easy to get along with. I think that he sort of is,
which is unsurprising for, you know, a guy who is a quarterback and sort of the leader of a team,
I think, but, you know, he's very outgoing and he's comfortable around most people. I mean,
that was something that when I interviewed his teammates, I kept hearing again and again, which is
that he gets along with the DBs. He gets along with the wider Cers. He gets along with the O-Lignment.
He can sort of go into any room and he's sort of a communing in that sense and that he can be comfortable and can get along with any group of people.
And that's, you know, obviously with a football team, those different groups are maybe not so different, but even outside in society.
You know, I was with at a restaurant.
I was with him in a few different environments.
He just gets along with everyone and frankly is easygoing.
I like that.
I like when people get along with restaurant people.
Clay Skipper, writer GQ Magazine, read the article.
It's interesting. Good talking to you, Clay. Thank you.
Thanks for interest. Thanks for having me on.
Daniel Jones just talked about Baker Mayfield. He goes, I think he's a great player. He can throw it.
I enjoy watching him play. That's in response to Baker taking a shot at Daniel Jones.
I don't think there's any question. If Tom Brady said this, people would view it differently.
Let's be honest. Most men are jealous of other successful men. Baker's easy to put your arms around.
He doesn't have a winning record. Cleveland's a losing franchise. But if Tom,
When Tom Brady came out and said, I can't believe the New York Giants drafted Daniel Jones.
It would not land the same.
It would be so beneath Tom Brady to do that.
Like Brady, I always hear, Brady's arrogant.
And I always say, find me the quote or the soundbite in 20 years that's arrogant.
Find me one.
Baker says this.
And it's like, well, it's just Baker being Baker.
I can find seven of them from Baker in camp.
So how stuff lands depends a lot of times how we view the person.
If Brady said this, of a Peyton Manning in his prime, if an Aaron Rogers said this, how arrogant.
Baker says it.
Yeah, it's easy to put your arms around.
It's a Cleveland Browns.
He's a walk on.
He's a little shorter.
He's, you know, I think his vulnerability makes him much more likable.
If Aaron Roger said this, we would eat him alive.

So here's Joy with the news.
No, no, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
All right, it's Live TV, so we're switching stuff up a little bit.
But let's start with that story.
So Baker wasn't the only brown to take a shot at the New York football giants today.
Odell had some words for them in a Sports Illustrated feature that was posted this morning.
Oh, boy.
He said, the Giants are stuck in an older mindset, he says.
Then he clarifies, he's not trying to take shots, just speaking facts.
There was no, this wasn't no business move.
This was personal.
They thought they'd send me here.
to die. They built something that they now wanted to control and there is no need to try to
control it. So basically he said the Giants send him to Cleveland to die. That's a little harsh.
I will say I do agree with him. I do think the Giants have been in previous years stuck in an
old model of doing business. That I agree with O'Dell Beckham. I don't know. I think that would be
negligence. If I was a general manager and I didn't take the best offer and I just
sent you to a bad team. I would be,
I don't think that's true. I mean, Dave
Gettleman, that would be negligence of job.
If somebody offered you a better offer,
you've got to send the player there.
Well, I think sometimes teams do this
so that they have to avoid playing certain players.
I mean, certainly we see this in the NBA.
That's fair. They send him to another conference.
Right. So there is some strategy there.
We know that Phil Belichick is known for not
dealing with the Browns intentionally.
He sent Garoppolo to the NFC.
Right, right. So there is some strategy there to,
okay, maybe this is the best deal,
but this might in the long run end up hurting us.
He is saying basically none of that was considered.
It was just like, we'll send him to Cleveland.
Cleveland, right, which is now looking like a great situation for not only Odell,
also Cleveland.
But I think what Odell is more referring to also is they kind of knew that Cleveland is not New York,
you know, so there are some personal elements that, you know,
you're not going to be as happy with as far as the city and the nightlife and what to do
and where to go eat and things like that on top of.
Cleveland not necessarily being a traditional powerhouse franchise.
So it's just kind of a strong wording.
And once again, you're still talking about New York.
Like, New York has a whole set of problems all their own.
And while he is right about them doing things the old way,
they've got their own stuff to deal with.
It's like, well, maybe the Browns were going to be noisy this year.
So in his first action since tearing his ACL in week three last season,
Jimmy G had a night to forget against the Broncos.
He completed only one of his six passing attempts for zero.
yards and a pick all for a quarterback
pass a rating of 0.0
and after the game he was a little frustrated.
Yeah.
Obviously a little frustrated but
that's the NFL. You know, it's
unfortunately we don't get to play the whole game right now
so, you know, it's, you only get
so many plays.
Wish you could be out there for more so you could bounce back
and everything, but it's, you know, it is what
is the preseason right now, so just got to take
it and try. It's something that I haven't
done in the year, obviously, so, you know,
got knocked the rest off and everything and
You know, thankfully we have a short week this week so we get bounced back quickly.
But it's, you know, the first step of getting back into it.
There's rust, but the people are being a little dramatic about it.
It wasn't a huge sample size, but you don't have a lot to judge Garapolo off to begin with.
This feels like the year he has to really, really perform.
Sure.
There's certain level of expectations with the 49ers this year.
But everyone shouldn't lose their mind about his contract.
because if the 49ers move on from him after 2019,
they only see $4.2 million in dead money.
Yes.
So while the contract seems crazy, $137 million in five years,
and San Francisco's stuck,
if he turns out to be a bus or if he gets injured again,
it's not real.
Like, obviously last year was the last year
him being injured of a non-contact play.
The worst part of the contract's over.
Right.
Like now at this point, at $27 million,
that's a reasonable number for his skill set,
eight and two as a starter.
And you won a starting,
and franchise quarterback. So they're actually in a great position. I mean, obviously, you never
want to be in a position where you feel like you need to move off the quarterback, but at least you're
not having to move off of him while paying him an astronomical amount of money. Finally, Zion's
fellow rookies might not be as hot on him as much as the world seems to be. In the 2019 rookie
survey, they were asked which rookie will have the best career, and the results are surprising.
Cam Reddish, who went to Atlanta, got 19% of the vote. John Morant has second with 16%
DeAndre Hunter, 11%.
And then R.J. Barrett, Jackson Hayes, Kobe White, and Zion are tied with 5%.
We've talked a lot about this rookie survey the past couple days.
Steph Curry, not getting one vote.
But yeah, Cam Reddish, that's who the rookies feel will have the best NBA career.
He scored 13.5 points per game with 3.7 rebounds at Duke and shot 35.6% from 3-point range.
I'm going to disagree.
I would take that, basically, and I just flip it.
I think Zion Williamson number one, John Morant, two.
I mean, R.J. Barrett, who will score a lot. He can shoot.
RJ Barrett will score a bunch of points in the NBA. I don't know how great it will be.
These kids have all played together for the most part also from a young age.
So they're probably a little bit of influence by how things went when they were playing against each other in AAU and in that circuit.
But it feels a little bit like.
I look jealous.
That would be a little salt involved there.
Somebody already got $100 million in a shoe deal.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Herd Line News.
One of my favorite guys.
Former Giant, former Redskin, former Packer.
Will Blackman is a fledgling wine sommelier.
And by the way, you've got a podcast.
You've got a new job.
You've got, I'm not going to announce it.
Or you're going to be doing some unbelievable stuff.
Internationally, you're a man of...
Take it easy.
You are something, my friend.
Okay.
Let's start with this.
That seems kind of harsh.
Giant sent me here to...
Cleveland to die. Please send me to Cleveland and give me 90 million and let me play up my best
friend to die. I don't think it's actually a good spot. It's a great situation. Baker's a very
accurate throw of the football. Baker's a phenomenal quarterback. Well, let's slow down. And Odell
runs good rounds. Phenomenal quarter. Talks a lot. What about all the chatter? What about
who cares about the chatter? He can throw. You don't care about the chatter. He can play. He can play.
We'll get there. He can play. All right. So what do you make about Baker's comments? First of all, he comes out,
a shot at Jones. Jones says, we're good. Baker then just five minutes ago, went back and said it's
clickbait. And patched it up. I didn't say that. It's nonsense. Clay Skipper is the writer GQ Magazine.
I want to go with Clay Skipper. To be able to write for GQ magazine, you've got to be pretty talented,
pretty smart. I don't think you're going to throw your career away making stuff up an interview,
but what do you make of his comment on Daniel Jones? First of all, what is GQ giving these guys when they
interview with them? No kidding. Jailen went off.
Odell went off.
Baker's going on here.
They need to start interviewing more politicians
and what part I get.
I think it's,
I don't think anything major of it with Baker.
I like the fact that he's honest.
He's saying how he feels.
And I didn't look at it as a diss.
Majority of the world, they were shocked.
And he just said, well, he felt.
Didn't bother you.
But why did he pull it back then and say it's clickbait?
If it didn't, if it didn't bother Baker,
why did he backpedal?
Because he didn't want it to make it seem like that it was a shot that he was dissing Daniel Jones.
I don't think that he just outright diss Daniel Jones.
You know, you think the writer was just out there?
No, I think that's just how it came across.
It just came across like that.
Well, yeah, it does come across like that.
Now, he's a type where I'm sure if somebody says something about him, then it's over.
It's nonstop.
I played with Richard Sherman.
Yeah, yeah.
And he was similar in terms of Sherman never started drama.
But if you said something to Richard, you were going to hear it for the rest of your career.
That's who Richard is.
Yep.
Yeah.
Antonio Brown.
I've covered a couple NFL teams and I've been in locker rooms.
There's a crazy guy in every locker room.
Could I just chalk it up to Antonio Brown?
It's just a little crazy.
He's just got a little money, got a little cray.
I mean, that's okay.
Every locker room's got a crazy guy.
I mean, what do you make of all this second grievance NFL helmet stuff?
What do you make of it?
The second grievance is tough.
You already lost the first one.
You're not going to win the second one.
It's tough.
I understand his frustration in terms of him wanting the helmet.
But once you already lost, I thought he was going to come back and be with the team.
I told the story earlier this week.
I was on a radio show where I had a similar situation on a smaller level.
So when I signed with Boston College, right, as a freshman, incoming freshman,
they gave everyone a sheet saying, hey, fill out.
this form, what style helmet you want, what face mask, and I was a football junkie.
I knew the exact face mask code.
I was psycho, right?
So I wrote all that down, and I showed up, and I was the number of recruit that year for
BC, showed up, looked at my locker, and it is not what I asked for.
Live it.
You were.
I wasn't going to practice.
I said, I'm not practicing today.
They look, why?
I told the head coach, I said, that's not the helmet I asked for.
They go, I know, I know, but this is what we're going to wear.
The freshman group is going to wear that.
I said, what everyone does it have to wear it?
why do I? They're like, this is what you have to wear. So I fought for a little bit.
Eventually, I was like, you know what? At the end of day, I just want to play ball.
So I reluctantly wore the helmet and had a pretty good career. Yeah. And I think in this case that,
you know, it is what it is. Everyone, I'm sure if everyone had the choice of what they want to
or they would have. A lot of guys like that shot. I love that shirt helmet that he wants.
That's my favorite helmet. You know, the new ones, I wasn't so keen on it. But, you know,
at the end of the day, he has a chance to be the face of that team. It just has to, he just has to,
just has to just take the helmet.
So you played with four different teams.
Yeah.
Who was the noisiest player or the most controversial player you ever played with?
Controversial.
Polarizing outspark.
Farve.
All right.
Yeah, Farv had.
That's valid.
Yeah, no, he had big opinions.
Yeah.
And how did it play in the locker room?
He was the best player.
He was the best player.
But it wasn't an issue until the whole.
reluctantly retiring.
Yeah, at the end it got sloppy.
Yeah, that's where it got sloppy.
But for the most part, he was who he was.
He got along with everybody.
That's why he reminds me at Baker a lot.
He, you know, at one point, Farv is playing, you know, spades with the defensive backs.
Or he's in the locker room playing crank gangers, which I think he thought of it was so funny.
Yeah.
Or, you know, he can get along with anyone.
But he was polarizing just because of who he was.
But I never, I actually been fortunate to be on a team's,
that did very, very well, and there weren't many issues.
Even when I was in Jacksonville, we were 0- and 8, so we had no reason to be a certain way.
But I've been fortunate to not be around.
You never had a disruptive teammate.
I never had a disruptive teammate.
Yeah.
Because wherever I was, we always had solid leaders on that team where it was like, hey, man,
this is how we do things.
And I've been fortunate to be, like, Green Bay is a, you know, historic franchise.
Sure.
You know, where the teams set in place, Giants, you know.
So.
Am I reaching?
Is Antonio Brown a distraction?
Just because I'm talking about him doesn't mean in the room he's a distraction.
Do you think players are talking about it in the locker room?
Guys are definitely talking about it.
And it's a distracting because he's being talked about.
It is, it is.
You're being asked about it.
His issue with his helmet is more is overshattering what they're trying to do for this season.
So you don't love it.
No, I don't love the story that it's, that it's, that it's all.
over the place. I don't think it's a big deal for it to be like to make a distraction. I believe
it's going to be, it's going to be solved. Right. But I think because it's out there, it's all
over the place media-wise, that the helmet deal is bigger than it seems. Everyone's tired of
hearing it. Everyone keeps talking about it. I don't think it's a major issue. I think they'll be
fine. Mayock knew who he was signing. I'm sure they had several conversations. Gruner knew what
was going on. So they'll get a fixed.
Jimmy G. was not great last night.
When I show the video of him, though, he's under duress.
Bradley Chub's in his grill.
They sent the heat.
I mean, they did.
He was under absolute direct.
He didn't get to set his feet twice.
One time he tried an underneath route.
It was tipped.
Some of it looked like to me, and I said this earlier.
First of all, he hasn't played in a year.
Vic Fangio brought the heat.
Bradley Chub was clearly unblockable.
George Kittle wasn't there.
And the receiving corps is mostly babies.
So I'm not shocked that it was ugly.
But what did you take?
I mean, when a quarterback doesn't have time, even Brady, they look bad.
Right.
He got 11 snaps.
I didn't take much from it.
That's just natural, right.
They look bad when you put pressure on him.
I think he's still trying to get comfortable with his health, with his body.
Sure.
You know, I had a knee surgery myself.
Uh-huh.
And the first thing I lost when I injured my knee was my confidence.
I lost all confidence because I wasn't sure, am I going to be the same?
Can I make the same moves?
can I, because the first part of my career, I was a part returner.
I did very well at that.
And so agility was my thing.
Am I going to be the same person?
If guys are flying out my legs, guys are hitting me a certain way.
And mine was a non-contact injury.
I didn't get hit and I got injured.
So like Jimmy Gee.
Exactly.
I planted.
So let me ask you, your first game back off injury, was it in your head?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
I didn't truly trust my knee.
It took me about two years.
Wow.
Two years to really, okay, let me.
let me cut off my left leg, you know?
Wow.
Even my, when I was training here in Orange County with Gavin McMillan, he was like,
watched this.
He would fill me.
And I would, I would break going to my right, but I would double tap off my right leg.
Just subconsciously, I'm not trying to do it.
So I get it.
And also, like he said, it is preseason.
You know, I've been, I think it was 2010, the Lions went 4 and 0.
Yes.
And then went 0 and 16.
Well, Peyton Manning, I, I,
I could be wrong on this.
I think it was Dan Marino.
Don Shuland, Dan Marino, I think,
and I could be wrong on this.
We're historically awful in the preseason.
I don't think Peyton Manning was good in the preseason.
There are people like Peyton Manning doesn't want to give you any of his information.
Like Peyton's not going to give you his audibles.
He's going to keep it really vanilla.
He keeps a vanilla anyway.
Payton runs like six plays and just executes.
No, it's crazy.
Honestly, it's the easiest and most difficult game plan to play against Peyton.
If he's under center, it's running.
If he's in a shotgun, it's passed.
And he would just go over and make the same calls.
I was covering Demarius Thomas one time.
And DeMiras couldn't get the play.
And so he yelled them.
He said, Demeris, you got a go route.
I'm like, he's just messing with me.
Sure enough, DeMars are in a go route.
I was like, wow, disrespectful.
Godly.
Hey, Will, here's what we're going to run.
Try to stop it.
Yeah.
He caught it.
Yeah.
So one more thing.
Jerry Jones joked about Ezekiel.
He just joked.
He goes, Zeke, who?
Zeke was not happy with it.
If you were Zeke and you were holding out and asking for a new deal and the owner
joked, would it bother you?
It wouldn't bother me, but I see how it would bother my agent.
Your agent wouldn't like it.
He wouldn't like it.
But me, I'm like, you know, I'm going to get paid.
Zika will get paid by somebody.
Yeah, he's going to get paid.
Would you hold out two years in advance?
Two years in advance.
That's a long way.
I'd have a hard time going to my bosses.
Listen, I know I'm halfway through the deal.
I want a new one.
Yeah, but if you're balling and you see everyone else what's going on.
Hey, I'm bawling right now.
Yeah, and then.
I'm bawling on the air.
I could go right now.
I want a new deal.
I am bawling.
But you're like, aren't you like the guy?
Where at this desk?
The guy what?
I'm not even the guy at home.
I think Buddy the dog is the guy at home.
I don't know.
Okay.
Once again, the injury rate in the NFL is 100%.
Right.
You got to go get it when you can.
If you can, mine's a job.
Did you ever have a holdout?
Absolutely not.
You didn't hold out?
No, hold off for what?
More money?
You never had one?
I never had leverage to hold out.
In your whole career, you didn't have leverage.
Oh, I never had leverage to hold out.
You sound like James Harrison said that earlier.
He's like, I went to camp because I wanted to get a job.
Yeah, I thought, I never went into one training camp where I was penciled in.
Even though I started a year before, I never went in, penciled in.
What do you mean you didn't go in penciled in?
Like, you're the guy.
I had a fight for my life.
Really, every year.
Colin. Every damn year.
Really?
Stressful.
Man.
Hey, congrats on the new job that you haven't announced.
Why do you keep doing that?
It's amazing.
Why do you keep doing that?
Why, it's amazing.
I'm happy for people who succeed in life.
I know, but don't try to be the guy to break the news.
This show is funny.
You're funny.
I told you earlier, I said my issue was I love and I hate this show at the same time.
Okay, so why do you love?
I love the show because you guys are fun.
I enjoy being here.
Why do you hate it?
I hate it because I come here and you don't tell me what we're going to talk about.
You always test me.
I sit in this chair and, America, this is on the fly.
I have no idea.
I never have any idea what's going on here.
Well, quarterbacks give you the play?
You got to roll the coverage.
I get film.
You got a little film on this.
You've seen tape of it.
You've played this before.
You know some of the rocks.
You are a common opponent, as they say.
Will Blackman, one of my faves.
Let's hear it for Will today.
Excellent work for Will.
Let's hear it.
We got all applause here.
We only applause, Peter.
will be like. All right, we take a break. Coming back, the herd tub time machine. We go back in time,
and I think it's going to shock you. We've been telling you about M-Drive now for several years, right?
As you hit 45 years old, the testosterone levels dip in all men. So Gary, a scientist in Arizona,
got to be 50. Naps were a little long, a little more fatigue, didn't have the energy, so we created
M-Drive, and one of the products within the M-Drive line is M-Drive.
M-Drive boost and burn.
It amplifies, increases the natural testosterone levels already in your body.
Therefore, it burns fat, lose weight, more energy.
M-D-for-men.com, that's where you go.
Type in the code H-E-R-D for 20% off.
It's also you can go to Rite Aid, vitamin shop, or Walgreens, those retail outlets.
Listen, you get older, you lose some of your testosterone levels, dip.
I want to amp them back up.
I take two pills every morning with my kale shake and my scrambled eggs, brother.
That's how I got so much energy.
I'm three and a half hours into the show, pow.
I'm still hitting doubles off the wall.
Best for last next.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing,
we get so wrapped up in the chase
that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing
and we're still chasing it
and we don't know when we've done enough.
Because people scoreboard watch.
Life becomes about wins and losses.
Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
because you find it important to be a good person
while you hear on earth?
Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Because that's two different intentions, bro.
Absolutely.
And that's two different levels of trust.
I want you to just really be a good person.

Hey, I'm Deanna Maria Riva, actress, mother, lover, and a Gen X woman walking through life one hot flash and hormonal crying jag at a time.
You ladies know what I mean.
I'll bet you a paramed apocal chin here you do.
So let's talk about it.
Join me on my new podcast.
How hard can it be with the Adamania Riva, where I call on my Gen X squads from Ohio to Hollywood as we navigate
Midlife's most fantastic BS.
All of a sudden, I'd had hanginess happening on my own.
I was like, what the hell is that?
I was married when I had her, so I didn't even consider how empty that nest was going to be.
Mood swings, night sweats, fupas, sex drive.
Wait, what sex?
Dating at 45.
How high can it be?
Getting naked at 50 with the new guy.
That one's kind of hard.
Well, that's lighting.
They say we can't polish a turd, but we're sure going to try.
So let's get blunt with laughs, tears, or tears of laughter,
and dive into it, unfiltered and unbothered and ask,
how hard can it be?
I cannot believe I'm about to say this out loud in public.
Listen to How Hard Can It Be with Diana Maria Riva as part of my Cultura Podcast Network
available on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
What's up, guys?
This is Clifford Taylor the Fourth.
And on my podcast, The Clifford Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff.
Like being an internet famous referee.
We're in the middle of a game.
This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me.
He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her.
What?
Time out.
Quarterback on office blue 42.
Hey, ref, my mama want you to wave at her.
What?
Hey, Miss Parker.

So sports changes very rapidly.
And today's best for last.
There's a song, Old Town Road.
And it had been number one for 19 straight weeks.
Now, if you've not heard this song, it's by Noss.
Little Nas X.
Okay, so let's play this song.
It's very popular with kids.
Kids are obsessed with the song.
Yeah, kids go into a state of zombieism.
They do.
Kids love this song.
Every remix.
So that was number one.
For 19 straight weeks.
It was dethroned yesterday.
Yes.
Anybody know who it was dethroned by?
Billy Elish.
Billy Elish.
Okay, Billy Elish is number one.
Yes.
Okay, so we have to go back.
Today we're going to play a game.
We have to go back to April 6th.
The last time
that song, Old Town Road,
wasn't number one.
Just to show you how quickly things change
in sports. We go to the herd tub time machine.
Roads,
and we're doing we don't need.
Road.
The herd tub time machine.
Okay, so here is what has happened
since the last time Old Town Road wasn't number one.
Four quarterbacks,
Russell Wilson, Big Ben, Carson Wentz, and Tom Brady
have all received new contracts in the NFL.
So four of the top quarterbacks in the league
all have new contracts.
which, of course, elevates Dak Prescott's contract.
He was hoping to get 30.
Then it came out not long after that.
He wants 40.
He'll probably get 35.
Here's another thing.
Kevin Durant was healthy and still a warrior.
Not only had Kevin Durant not been heard in the finals,
Kevin Durant hadn't strained his calf against Houston yet.
The Warriors were just wrapping up, the number one seat in the West.
They were favorites.
Durant was a warrior, and they had a completely healthy roster.
The last time Old Town Road wasn't number one,
the Seattle Mariners had the best record in baseball.
They were 8 and 2.
Now they're 27 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West, my team.
The last time Old Town Road wasn't number one.
The AAF was still in existence.
That may sound like an insurance company.
It's actually a professional football league in the spring.
The American Alliance of Football.
Now the XFL is up and coming in the spring.
The AAF filed for Chapter 7.
No longer a league.
Magic Johnson was the president of basketball operations for the Lakers.
Not only was Anthony Davis not here yet,
Magic was still running the show.
There was kumbaya.
Everybody liked everybody.
he would go on to hold a rambling sort of bizarre impromptu presser in which he threw Rob Polenka under the bus.
The last time Old Town Road was not number one, Josh Rosen was the Arizona Cardinals starting quarterback.
There weren't, in fact, even rumors of Kyler Murray.
He was starting.
Cardinals would take Kyler a couple of weeks later.
How about this?
Last time Old Town Road wasn't number one.
Tiger Woods had not won a major since 2008.
Okay?
Think about that.
This, by the way, is one of the great sports stories of my life.
If I had to rank my favorite championships, Miracle on Ice, the United States
beating Russia would be number one.
I could make an argument.
Tiger coming back and winning that Masters is number two.
That's how emotional I got watching that.
That's how strongly I felt about Tiger coming back.
all the surgeries, all the physical problems, and winning the Masters.
And finally, the game, the final season of Game of Thrones hadn't even premiered yet.
Forget about the criticism after it had not even premiered yet.
Yeah, people still thought it was a great show at that point.
And then it had a really bad...
It didn't end the way people wanted to.
By the way, I just finished up.
I tend to binge watch about twice a year.
I will pick a show.
It didn't happen very often because I watch a lot of sports and a lot of politics and a lot of live news, right?
And I've got, you know, I watch the Smithsonian Channel, history channel a little bit.
But I don't binge watch very often where I go to a paper like a Netflix or a Hulu or an Amazon Prime or a Paramount,
where I go and say, I'm going to watch a show eight to ten episodes in two days.
I just did it for the first time this year.
What show is it?
Mind Hunter.
It's my favorite show.
outside of Narcos,
Narcos is incredible. Narcos is my favorite show
of all time on any
subscription-based television network.
Mind Hunter's my
second or third favorite. You have to check out
Euphoria.
Euphoria? Yes. Now what's that on?
With Sendai. It's on HBO.
Okay. And it's excellent.
Euphoria. What's it about?
It's about
teenagers today and dealing with social media
and drugs and it's
high school. It's awesome. It's really good.
Okay. All right. So there you go. By the way, aluminum carry-on luggage from away luggage is absolutely fantastic. I want you to go to awaytravel.com slash Colin, $20 off when you enter the promo code, Colin. By the way, let me ask you about the Old Town Road song. John, you can play that again. Lil Nas X.
Nass X. Okay. Lil Nas X. I have a question.
He was replaced by Billy Elish with Bad Guy. Okay. But had Lil Nas X done anything?
before this? Was he a big star? This was
his first big hit.
He has had hits since then.
But this was the big one. Yes. And do you think it's a
great song? I do think it's a great song, yeah.
I mean, it could not be a great song.
It crushed all kinds of records.
Well, yeah, but Macarena was like,
that's not a good song. No, he's...
I mean, that's arguable. People really love
that song. Really? If you've been
on a cruise, well, you don't go on cruises.
I mean, I don't dance in the Macarena, but people do love that song.
So I think this is catchy, but is it a great song?
I think it's a good song.
Speak for yourself next.
