Los Angeles, Iheart
radio, Fox Sports
Radio on FS1, Joy
Taylor is joining me, loaded today,
Michael Strayhan, Greg
CoSell, David Shaw, Stanford,
Notre Dame. It's the biggest weekend in college
football in a decade, and it's not for the
reason you think. I'll talk about that later. Joy, how are you this morning?
I'm doing great. Good morning. It's great to have you in this morning. It is a Thursday, Rams, Vikings
tonight. I'll get to that throughout the course of the show. I do want to start with this, though.
Stardom is really hard to explain. Certain people have it. Certain people don't. I can't explain it.
Kendall Jenner can't sing, can't dance, and can't act. And in Hollywood, which is the highest
percentage of stars in anyone
city in America, she's a bigger star than 99% of the people
in Hollywood. If Kendall Jenner
walked into a mall in Hollywood and Tom Hanks and
Denzel were there, Kendall Jenner would get mobbed.
And she can't sing, she can't dance, she can't act, she can't
do much. Her parents were
attractive and she is a superstar
and I can't explain it. But that's just the way the world works.
It's not all about talent. Talent matters,
but it's not all about talent.
Baker Mayfield teammate.
Richard Higgins said this week,
he might end up being on the LeBron
wall. And people are like,
whoa, whoa, whoa, the wall.
Cleveland has a building. They put LeBron
on it. I'm going to tell you something about Baker Mayfield.
Is he as talented as Baker
as Andrew Luck? No.
But he's already a bigger star.
Then Andrew Luck. Is he
as talented as Russell Wilson? No.
Is he as talented as Carson Went or Matt Ryan?
No. I think he's going to
be a bigger star than all of them, and he's already a bigger star than Andrew Luck.
Here's an amazing thing about Baker Mayfield. He is already top 10 in NFL jersey sales.
Why is that a big deal? Folks, he hasn't started a game yet. Everybody else on the list,
you know, has started games. Tom Brady, Julio Jones, Odell Beckham, Luke Keakley, Sequin
Barkley. If you look at the top 10 jersey sales, position doesn't matter that much.
We got a linebacker. We got a quarterback. We got a wide receiver. We got a running back.
We got a couple running backs. Stefan Diggs. Personality. Some have it.
Dak doesn't really have a personality. But the Jets and the Browns got a TV rating about a week ago, and it was shocking to me.
It was a shocking TV rating. And it wasn't about the Jets and it wasn't about Sam Darnold. It was a Baker
Mayfield TV rating. And I always try to be a consumer when I do my show. What do I care about?
And so when I drive into work in the morning, what interests me? I want to be a viewer. I want to be a
listener. I don't want to think like me. I want to think like you. And the game I cannot wait to
watch this week, this Sunday, is Baker Mayfield at Oakland. That's the game that interests me
the most. Is it because Baker Mayfield's great? He's not even the best quarterback in that
game. But like Kendall Jenner, he checks all the boxes. He positioned quarterback, police video,
profoundly popular in college, controversial. He's got commercials and good ones all over television.
He's an underdog. He's in a city and a franchise that's called losers like the Cubs,
and he's a winner. And I'll tell you this. LeBron in Ohio,
was a Messiah.
People never thought they related to LeBron.
He was like a gift.
He was born there.
And you looked up at LeBron
like people in the West look up at God.
You don't relate to God.
God's up there.
Baker's right here.
Baker's as tall as you.
Baker's about your size.
Baker is flawed.
Baker make mistakes.
Baker's got a police video.
Baker's been a goofball.
Baker comes on this show and argues.
Baker's emotional.
LeBron James was a gift.
He was a Messiah.
You never felt you were his equal.
You never felt that with LeBron.
You were looking up at LeBron James.
Johnny Carson's an old TV star in America, the late Johnny Carson, he used to always say.
Even though Johnny was much bigger in Hollywood than movie stars in his day,
when you go to a theater, you're looking up at movie stars.
You're intimidated by movie stars at a theater.
But everybody watched Johnny Carson on a TV sitting down in a living room.
So Johnny was a bigger star in Hollywood than anybody else,
but people would go up to Johnny at a restaurant and bother him.
You'd never go up to a movie star.
Oh, I can't go up to Tom Cruise or George.
Because when you watch them, you watch them on a movie screen.
You're looking up at them.
Johnny Carson was bigger than all of them in his prime in the 70s and 80s,
but you watched them in a living room.
He was your guy.
You were eating your TV dinner watching Johnny Carson.
He was relatable.
I think Baker Mayfield is the biggest star in the NFL that nobody knows is a star yet.
Top 10 in Jersey sales.
He's never started a game.
He's not as talented as Andrew Locke.
But you know what people do when they come up to me at a restaurant
or they come up to me at a car wash?
You know what everybody wants to talk about?
Baker Mayfield.
The NFL's got themselves a star.
Whether they know it or not,
I cannot wait to watch Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns
who've lost 22 straight road games
at a dysfunctional Owen three Raiders.
I can't explain Kennell Jenner,
but I'll tell you what I can explain.
If Baker Mayfield didn't play in this game,
Raiders, Tyrod, Taylor,
doesn't even make my television set.
I got three TVs.
I wouldn't put it on any of them.
It now is the most interesting game to me.
And that's not Gruden and it's not Derek Carr,
and it's not the Browns.
It's Baker Mayfield.
And I don't think he's nearly as good as Wence
and Matt and Russ.
Russell, but he's more interesting.
And interesting is often like Kendall Jenner, what creates stars.
I want to shift to this.
When I was very young and a sportscaster, I was very lucky.
I got a big break.
My first job was in Las Vegas.
And Mike Tyson was emerging as this amazing boxer.
And one of the things I always loved about Tyson wasn't as his boxer.
wasn't his boxing,
is that he had a real sense and admiration and love
for the history of boxing.
You could talk boxing with Mike Tyson.
He'd tell you about Toney and Dempsey and Ali
as he had a real appreciation for the history of the sport.
It's one of the things I like about LeBron James.
LeBron James, you can go 1970s NBA,
1980s NBA, 1990s.
He is calculated.
He knows NBA history.
He appreciates it.
He's very smart.
So LeBron James said yesterday, I don't need preseason games to get ready.
I'm not going to be playing in preseason games.
I'm going to talk to Luke Walton about that.
I'm not going to be doing preseason games.
And as I've told you many times, LeBron also hates practice.
Now, why is this?
because LeBron understands history
and Larry Bird should have played four more years
but Larry Bird was a gym rat
and his legs gave out
and Kobe Bryant was a gym rat
and would practice and practice at a high level
and his body wore down
and Michael Jordan partied like crazy
cigars, steaks
late night card games
and his body deteriorated.
LeBron James knows his legacy
is now all about being able to play in June.
It is not a coincidence in the last six years
as LeBron has hit the back nine in his career
that every January, his teams are struggling.
He doesn't practice anymore.
He doesn't want to practice.
He doesn't want to be playing preseason games.
And you can yell at LeBron for that.
but there's two reasons it's happening because LeBron has a real understanding of the history of the game
and he has watched his idols and his contemporaries fall apart because they overpractice.
They play in games that don't matter and he's not going to do that.
And the second thing is, and this is blaming the public and the media, everybody after LeBron won his first,
title started comparing him to Michael.
And all of you out there, the media and the fans, said, no, six for six, six for six, six for six.
It didn't matter that LeBron was going to blow Michael away in every statistical category.
It didn't matter because you made it all about finals.
And so LeBron, like he has done with basketball history, listened.
He listened to the media.
He listened to the fans.
And he said, I'm not going to.
to waste my legs at practice and I'm not going to waste my legs in the NBA preseason and I'm
going to start taking a bunch of days off in the regular season. He did it because of you and his
appreciation for history. The Lakers, I believe, will win about 47, 48 games, but they won't
be very good in October, November, and December. LeBron spends $1 million a year on his body,
eats, sleeps, rests, doesn't practice. He is seeking a career extension. And when he said that
yesterday, I'll be ready for June. I'm not going to do preseason. That's his appreciation
for the game and watching stars deteriorate Kobe, Bird, MJ, and it's also listening to you.
It matters what you do with your body. There's a meme that went around the internet that was wildly
funny and it was on the internet when Mission Impossible came out about a month ago.
Tom Cruise is five years older in Mission Impossible than Wilford Brimley was in Coon.
And I'm putting that picture up for our FS1 audience.
How you treat your body is how your body eventually treats you.
Say what you want about Tom Cruise.
The exercise, the regimen, the working out, he's still a movie star in America.
And LeBron has been the Tom Cruise of this sport.
He's watched other actors not take care.
care of themselves, be gym rats, can't get out of it, over practice, kill yourself for preseason
and regular season games in Denver in December, and he's not going to do it. And he's not going to do
it here. And I applaud him for it because we're the ones that kept saying six for six, June's all
that matters. All that matters is finals. We don't care. And LeBron's like, all right, you're right.
I'll be ready for June. Good to have you in today. Coming up, tonight's actually one of the
really Fox debuts it's Thursday night
football. It's going to be great. Michael Strayhan joins us
next hour. And
you can tell me somebody's
a star, but I
don't buy it just because you're trying to sell
it. And you're going
to see something in tonight's game with the Rams
and the Vikings in regards to that
and that is coming up next. Be sure to catch
live editions of the herd weekdays
at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio,
FS1, and the IHeard Radio app.
Notre Dame Stanford this weekend.
Shah is going to be joining me in about five minutes, coach of Stanford Smart Dude,
also a Clemson player transferred.
Nobody knows what to do.
I don't think it's a big deal.
Guys want to go, let him go.
Greg Cosell, Michael, Strayan, Rod Woodson today.
Joy Taylor is joining me.
So Hollywood does this from time to time.
They tried to make somebody a star that's not really a star.
They're more of a two than a one.
I always said Al Gore was a great two, never be president.
Some people are great twos.
They're not ones.
Hollywood did this with Jude Law.
They pay him like a star.
If you go look at the movies he's been in, he sounds like a star.
but you can't make him Sherlock Holmes. He's Watson.
The talented Mr. Ripley, he wasn't Mr. Ripley. Matt Damon was.
When you make him a star in a movie, nobody watches.
Jude Law can be paid like one. You can try to convince me he's one. He's not one.
Kirk Cousins tonight is not a star. His contract tells he's a star.
He gets paid like a star. He may win a bunch of games and you'll think he's a star,
but he's 6'3, 208 pounds.
He doesn't have a great arm. He's not a world-class athlete.
and he's not very big.
His own executive, Bruce Allen,
didn't know his name
when talking about his contract negotiations
in D.C. earlier in his career.
Remember this?
After discussions with Kurt this weekend, face-to-face,
Kurt is obviously an important part of our organization.
Our goal was to sign Kurt to a long-term contract.
We made Kurt an offer.
that included the highest fully guaranteed amount upon signing.
It's so painful.
His name is not Kurt.
It's Kirk.
But again, people get fooled.
Tonight, Jared Goff is a number one pick in the draft.
Cam Newton was a number one pick in the draft.
Andrew Luck was a number one pick in the draft.
When you watch Patrick Mahomes or Carson Wentz,
it may only be once, sometimes twice in the game, that you go, whoa.
I see it about once a week from Cam.
Whoa!
Jared Goff had a throw last week to Robert Woods.
And it was the best throw of any quarterback in the entire national football league.
No quarterback on the planet last week made a better throw than the one I'm showing the FS1 viewers right now.
That is a number one quarterback throw.
Kirk Cousins doesn't make that throw.
So tonight, you're going to have, and by the way, Gough may only have one play to
night. One throw. I don't care about stats. I don't care about Kirk Cousins is Jude Law. He gets paid
like a star. He's in movies like a star. But every time you want him to be a star,
Kirk Cousins is 4 and 19 in his NFL career. And by the way, he's been on some pretty good teams.
Four and 19 against teams that are 500 or better. Because you know what teams that are 500 or better
have? Star quarterbacks. He's 4 and 19.
So tonight, give me that star moment in Jude Law's career, the scene in which you're like,
woo, they doesn't have one.
Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible, second best movie ever made, had a couple of moments where I'm like,
wow, you literally can't take your eyes off him, hanging from a cliff, can't take your eyes off him.
A few good men, can't take your eyes off.
By the way, stars aren't stars all the time.
Jack Nicholson's been in 150 movies.
He's probably got 160 scenes where you're like, oh, my God, he is unbelievable.
Didn't every scene's not like that?
Tom Cruise has like 12 scenes in his life.
One of them in his underwear.
Remember that one singing in his underwear?
Where you're like, oh, he's a star.
Jude Law doesn't have any of them.
Kirk Cousins doesn't have any of them.
Jared Goff had one last week.
He was the best throw on the planet by any quarterback.
and you're like, that's why he's the number one pick.
Remember, even stars aren't stars every play,
but they can take you to places that non-stars can't.
For the record, Tom Cruise does his own stunts.
Dude to Star.
Mission Impossible, second best movie ever made after The Godfather.
I'm not kidding you.
Half of my staff still hasn't seen it.
Wait until you see the cliff scene.
Are they paying you to promote that earlier?
No, I'm honestly starting to believe it.
what's happening here. No. The second best movie
ever, Colin. You know what? Let me re-consider. By tomorrow, it could be the best movie we've ever seen.
Are you trying to get a role in Mission Impossible Seven? He is so good in it. It is
so good. Cruz is so good. But there's about two scenes
in the movie where you're like, oh, Tom's special. I know he can be
cuckoo. I know some of you don't like his religion. I know the Oprah jump on the couch
thing. About two times in that movie, you're like, Jude Law can do that. Joey Taylor,
with the news.
Turn on the news.
This is the herd line news.
You're right, though.
Dude law would be a terrible casting for Mission Impossible.
It would be called Mission Possible.
It just wouldn't be that interesting.
I did like him an enemy at the gates, though.
That's a low-key, good movie.
All right.
So Aaron Rogers has sat out of practice Wednesday through Friday each week
since injuring his knee in the season opener.
And he's then participated in Saturdays and obviously on Sundays.
But his missing practice time during the week is affecting the rest of the team,
according to Aaron Rogers and Mike McCarthy.
I do love to compete. There's no doubt about it. It is difficult and different for me to not be out there.
You know, I'm one who always loves being out there because you're not just competing,
but you're working on things with the guys and working through the game plan, especially on days like Wednesday and Thursday.
So that has been obviously a struggle for me.
He's clearly the guy that probably stirs to drink down there on Henkel Field because he's so competitive.
And once again, the quarterback position has to bring that to your program.
You cannot grow during a week if your quarterbacks aren't bringing it.
He's hurt again and he's not practicing again.
And I'm not blaming him again.
But these are not opinions.
These are facts.
Aaron Rogers is hurt again and not practicing again.
And how many times are?
Well, I mean, it's obviously causing problems with his receivers.
Did you watch that game last week?
Green Bay, it wasn't that competitive.
I mean, it's like they're, I get tired of being, I'm not anti- Aaron Rogers.
I don't like being branded that.
I like him.
He's great.
But he's hurt again.
He's not practicing again.
This is becoming his brand.
He's like one more major injury.
His new brand is Aaron Rogers.
Not Sam Bradford, but Aaron Rogers is hurt again.
Availability plays a part in...
And by the way, he replaced a guy, Brett Favreve, who was never hurt.
And I'm not blaming either one of them.
But some guys are more injury prone and Brett Favreve got smoked his whole career and never got hurt.
There's certain guys who get injuries because you can tell.
They don't take care of their bodies in the offseason or they don't train properly or they're just doing too much.
And then there's just luck.
And that plays a role in sports.
Like sometimes it just happens.
Somebody lands on you funny and you pop your collarbone.
But, you know, we were talking about LeBron at the beginning of the show how much money he spends on his body.
I'm not saying Air Rogers doesn't do that.
But the availability that LeBron has plays a role in his greatness.
Oh, God, it's the second chapter.
He's never ever heard.
Yes.
Brett Farrb led the NFL interceptions, didn't have a ton of playoff wins.
Part of Fav's greatness was 18 years every Sunday limping he was available to be a hero.
And this isn't going to change because when you come into the season injured, you then have to nurse it.
Basically, you really don't have the time to fully recover from it.
So this is unfortunately likely going to be the story all season long with them.
So Ezekiel Elliott is obviously the Cowboys best offensive weapon by far, which is probably why Zeke was
asks if he's going to get more carries from Jason Garrett.
And here's his answer.
I mean, you can do all that.
But at the end of the day, like, if you go back and watch the film,
it's poor execution on offense.
You can't run the ball if you're down by 17 points.
That's what it is.
If we get behind, we're going to have to throw the ball.
We're not going to be able to, you know, do what we want to do.
So what we have to do so we can be able to run the ball more is just be better early in the game.
So if we execute early, then we can run the football.
as much as we want. Yeah, that's right. He's absolutely right.
It's hard when you're down 17 and there's 11 minutes to go and you're pounding out three
yard runs. Right. I mean, they rank 30th in total yard, so their offense is definitely struggling
one and two on the season. He failed to tally 20 carries. It's the first time in his career
that he's gone two games in a row with less than 20 carries. You know what's interesting about this?
You know who looks good in all this? Des Bryant. I mean, it's, it would, but we just saw Eric Reed got a job today.
Eric Reed was the controversial player, kind of aligned with Colin Kaepernick.
Carolina said, hey, we want Eric Reed.
And by the way, Eric Reed should be on an NFL roster.
He's a good enough player to be in an NFL roster.
Now, Kaepernick's different because he's a quarterback.
He hasn't played for years.
And, you know, it's a different ball game.
But Eric Reid's good, and he should be on a roster for the next five years of his life.
Des Bryant leaves the Cowboys, and they go to dead last in offense.
And it's like, Des Bryant should be on a roster somewhere.
Of course, Des Bryant should be on a roster somewhere, though.
I think that like you've mentioned before, they've gotten to some point of fatigue with talking about where Des Bryant is going to go because where is he going to go?
We can just continue talking about that forever.
Des Bryant should be on a roster.
I don't know that it doesn't make Des Bryant look bad.
That's for sure that they're not doing well.
But overall, this is, I mean, we keep talking about Zach.
They're going to have to get it in gear at some point this season or it's going to be problematic moving forward.
You know, Cowboys are one of the few brands in American sports that they don't have to be good to be interesting.
and I think the interesting part is, what do you do with DAC?
Right.
There's a couple of, if Dallas ends up being a 5 and 11 team and they don't look great right now,
they're going to be in the top 10 in the draft,
and they're going to be the only team in the top 10 that needs a quarterback,
and Oregon's got a kid that I think would walk in tomorrow and be a star in this league,
like really good fast.
Well, this year is crucial.
His rookie year, obviously, we know what happened with him and him and Zeeke.
Last year, I think there were too many moving parts
and too much controversy going on with Zique and Sean Lee is out.
And there's all kinds of stuff going on.
And last year is basically a wash.
So this year is the year he's got to prove that he's what we saw in his rookie season was legit
and not just luck, basically.
Finally, many would say that Jamon Green was the Warriors' best defensive player.
He's the Warriors' best defensive player.
However, Kevin Durantz feels a little differently.
KD told 95.7 the game that he believes that he, too, deserves to be considered among
the league's elite players on the defensive end of the floor.
You know they're not going to give me.
anything.
Even if it's on the fence, I have to be clear-cut better than everybody for me to even get a look.
So, why do you think that is?
I mean, it's just pure hate for me, obviously.
Come on.
No appreciation for my real skill for the game.
But I get it.
I understand what we're coming from.
Who hates Kevin Durant?
Nobody's not hateable.
Nobody hates Kevin Durant.
He and Steph Curry are unhatable.
I get the people that don't like LeBron.
I think there are.
I mean, Katie is more controversial than Steph, but there are people that Steph annoys, for sure.
I mean, Steph gloats and, you know, he's got that love.
But he's kind of playful.
He is playful, but that annoys people.
Who hates Kevin Durant?
Katie is convinced that there is a group of, I mean, for sure, people hate Kevin Durant.
He left Oklahoma City in Russell Westbrook.
Yeah, I guess.
And join the Warriors.
He will definitely hate Kevin Durant.
God, how in the, but I think he's more speaking along the lines of because he is considered such an offensive threat.
No one pays attention to what he does on defense.
I think he's getting whinier by the day.
Kevin Durant's got to chill out.
Who doesn't like Kevin Durant?
He's a great kid.
I find the Warriors completely likable.
I do too, but there are people that hate Kevin Durant, though.
That is, that shocks me.
That hate him?
Yes, he left OKC and went to join the Warriors.
Dramont Green kicks people in the stuff.
I get hating that.
Rodman kicked people and I get that.
Kevin Durant and have a hateable.
What world do I live in?
There's a bunch of people that hate Kevin Durant.
There are definitely people on the internets that hate Kevin Durant.
I don't get it.
Joy with the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
It's a huge college football game this weekend.
The college football,
is getting very regional. It's getting very southern. Clemson, Bama, Georgia. And I think Notre Dame
is vital to the sports health. I think the Big Ten, having a Western team that's good is vital
to the sports health, and I love it. David Shaw is the coach of Stanford. They go to Notre Dame
after a wildly entertaining game against Oregon. By the way, David Shaw played wide receiver
at Stanford under Bill Walsh. You'll learn something new every day, and he's joining me in Palo Alto
via the Coward Global Satellite Network.
You know, it's interesting.
I watched Notre Dame three times this year, and my takeaway was just on the eye test.
This is the best Notre Dame roster of NFL bodies I have seen in a long time.
Now, that's just eyes.
And they brought in a quarterback last week late in the game, and oh my, oh my, when you look at film in Notre Dame,
it looked, they looked like they can match up with anybody in the country.
Is this the best Notre Dame team you've seen on film, David?
That's hard to say because they've been really good for a while now.
Every year, we've battled them every year,
and they seem to restock big, long, physical defensive linemen,
athletic receivers, running backs that can get by
in big physical offensive linemen.
So every year it's going to be a battle,
and this year they're on a role.
They're playing extremely well.
I think defensively they are very, very scary.
and offensively they have weapons.
Yeah, a bunch of guys are going to play on Sundays.
You know, it's interesting.
Everybody now, even Nick Saban's offense, they're spreading it out.
You got a quarterback that can run.
You feel like your last of a dying breed.
You are a pro-style offense.
You pound the football.
You look like a lot of teams on Sunday.
Now, here you are in Palo Alto, a brain center.
You could be doing crazy offensive stuff, but you kind of are old-school football.
Have you thought about, hey, let's put more wiggles in,
quarterbacks that can move around.
Why have you maintained this power football in this 2018 world
where everybody's trying new crazy stuff?
Well, to answer that question pretty bluntly,
we're in the top five and wins against Division I opponents in this decade.
So for us, it works.
We're not about the flash.
We're not about the excitement.
I think winning games is exciting.
I think doing the right things is exciting.
I think recruiting the right guys that do the right things is exciting.
So when people come watch us play, I think they're entertained.
And for us, it's about trying to find a way to win football games.
You played a quarterback last week, Justin Herbert,
and you've got a bunch of NFL guys on your roster.
I watched Justin Herbert play, and David, you have gone up against,
you have seen and coached Andrew Luck, you went up against Sam Darnold,
you've seen Josh Rosen.
the Pac-12 historically puts a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL.
Justin Herbert at Oregon.
Boy, David, he's good.
Like when you have seen him now a couple times,
what's his ceiling?
What do you make of him as a talent going forward?
Because I have a feeling we're going to see him play for the next 20 years.
Over the years, you have talked a lot about quarterback play,
and there is an upper echelon.
And for me, I'm not ready to put him in it just yet.
I think he needs a little bit more experience.
But the bottom line is he's got all the tools.
Everything that you're looking for for a guy, height, speed, athleticism, accuracy, arm strength,
competitiveness, he's got them all.
You know, like he's on that verge to be that Marcus Mariotta, super special football player
that can change games with his arm or change games with his legs.
You know, yesterday, Clemson, Dabo Sweeney, the coach of Clemson, let a quarterback transfer.
And, you know, the Internet goes crazy about it, should he, shouldn't.
I have no problem.
Coaches leave, kids can leave.
But we do have something going on, David, culturally, in college basketball, in college football,
that if kids don't start, I'm out of here.
And how does it land for you because you want kids to enjoy their college experience?
But if you had two quarterbacks tomorrow say, I want to leave Stanford, it puts you
in your program in a bind.
Where do you land on transferring college athletes?
Well, I'll give you a short answer because we can.
do an entire show on this. The bottom line for me is we can't blame the young people. We got to
blame the adults. What are we prioritizing here? What lessons are we trying to teach our young people?
If you don't win, then quit. You don't win, then leave. If you're not number one, then you can't
persevere. My experience has been the best players I've been around have had adversity.
And they stick to it and they stick to their guns. And I, there's something about being said,
hey, you know what? You lost a competition. Now, what are you going to do? You want to come
and fight for it back.
You want to take this opportunity to make yourself better.
I think we celebrate the individuals so much that we're losing a big thing we're trying to teach.
And I take my job very seriously as a mentor.
And sometimes things are difficult.
And you love for young men to, yes, ultimately do what you want is best for them in the long run.
In the short run, you love to see a guy stay with his football team through the end of the year.
You know, you've had offers, the NFL calls you, you could have left Stanford multiple times.
Again, Stanford has the top five most wins against top ranked teams in the country.
And once again, you never duck opponents.
You go out of your way to play Notre Dame.
You don't have to play Notre Dame.
Alabama doesn't play a tough out-of-conference schedule.
A lot of teams don't.
There's a million reasons why you could leave Stanford.
Why do you remain at an academic power where it's harder to recruit?
And, you know, again, there's a lot of easier routes for you.
Why do you remain there?
Well, I think, honestly, the honest answer, I love it here.
I really do.
And where a lot of people say like you did, where it's hard to recruit, I say it's
almost easier to recruit because you cut out 80% of the young people in high school.
You cut out the ones that are not academically viable.
You cut out the ones that don't have high character.
And you cut out the ones that are not great football players.
So we're recruiting a very specific subset of high school athletes.
And I love it.
I love being around guys that want to be great NFL players
and also want to be doctors like Bryce Love.
Guys that want to be great football players
and want to take international relations like JJ Arsego-Whiteside.
Those are the guys that we want here.
And we can get these guys and have them graduate
and go into wonderful things outside of football.
And we all can also put together a great football team
that can play big games like we are this weekend.
By the way, you're running.
back wants to be a doctor?
That's interesting. Oh, absolutely.
Bryce Love, and he's going to graduate
from Stanford in three years and a quarter in human
biology, and he's going to be a first-round draft pick.
Those are the kind of people that I love to be around.
My lord. My dad was an optometrist.
I told my mom I'm like, I'm not good at math.
I can't take over dad's, I can talk on radio.
I can't do math, mom. They wanted me to take
for my dad's business. You really have done an amazing job. And I'll tell you, you're going to have
your hands full. You're seven, Notre Dame's eight. This is Saturday night. This is going to be
an absolutely fascinating football game. David, I love when you come on the show. Thank you so much
for stopping by. Anytime, Colin. Good to talk to you. Four-time Pac-12 coach of the year. I think it's a
huge weekend for college football. Get back to that in a couple of hours. I want to tell you this.
coming up next, an ex-New England patriot said something, and it's brutally honest and
uncomfortably honest, and that is coming up next.
It's the herd.

Joey said yesterday she's got that credit card debt way down.
Very happy with herself right now.
I am adulting my credit.
Good for you.
Thank you.
Mine was bad in my 20s.
I had bad credit in my 20s.
So did I.
Yeah.
I had, my mom said it one time, she said, you have, she goes, you have champagne dreams and a milk budget.
That was my mom's takeaway.
I'm like, mom, you mean I like nice stuff, but can't afford it?
That's a bad recipe for credit cards.
So a former Patriot executive said something brutally honest yesterday during a podcast.
He said, I mean, Cordarell Patterson runs the wrong route.
He's a new Patriot receiver.
Cordell Patterson's always going to run the wrong route.
Brady is never going to trust Cordarell Patterson.
There's no chance.
There's no chance.
Here's the thing.
the older and better you get.
If you're watching my show right now,
the older you get generally at your job,
the better you will get because you just do it more and more and more.
It doesn't matter if you're a landscaper, a teacher.
It doesn't matter if you're a programmer, a barista.
The older you get into your 30s, into your 40s, into your 50s,
the better you get at something until you get to be 60, 70 and just deteriorate.
And the older you get at something,
the more infuriating incompetence becomes.
Nick Saban has a great quote.
Mediocre people don't like high achievers,
and high achievers don't like mediocre people.
I used to be able to work with people who are average
and not get frustrated.
It was part of the process.
Now I can't have them in the room.
I can't have them in the room.
They drive me crazy.
And the same will happen to you if you're watching my show
and you're in your 20s and early 30s.
The older you get, the better you get.
And the incompetence,
becomes infuriating.
Think about this with the Patriots.
The Patriots have brought in a former first rounder who can't stay on a team because he won't memorize the playbook,
Cordell Patterson, and a drug addict, Josh Gordon, and Philip Dorset from Indianapolis,
who can't catch and can't stay healthy.
And you wonder why Tom Brady is frustrated.
Let me show you the video after Brady lost to Detroit.
He is not angry.
He is completely exhausted.
with this mess of people he's been saddled with.
I mean, we're not scoring enough points.
We're not executing well enough on a down-by-down basis,
certainly at a high level that we should have our expectations set at.
Two weeks where, you know, you get behind and just not make enough plays early in the game.
And we're behind and we're just fighting a pill all day.
So it's no way to play football.
It's no way to, you know, execute at a very high level.
And we're just not doing anything well enough.
Let me ask you, if you were good at your job, whatever you are, again, teacher, landscaper, dentist, attorney, whatever you do, mechanic, and you're 40.
And now you're really good at it.
You've been doing it for 20 years.
Your dad did it, you did it.
It does optometrist, mechanic, it doesn't matter.
And you're finally really good at it.
And your boss said, hey, I got a guy.
He can't stay off drugs, but he's going to be your really important, crucial part to your business.
And there's this other guy that he won't commit to memorizing a playbook.
He's the other guy.
How'd you feel?
How would you feel completely disrespected?
Brady's just over it.
He had Dionne Lewis, Bill let him go.
He had Danny M. Andola who's willing to memorize a playbook.
Let him go.
Dionne Lewis memorized a playbook.
Let him go.
Had West Welker, let him go.
That's why Brady is so loyal to grunk.
Why Brady stepped in and would not let the Patriot
and Bobcraft trade Gronk because Gronk can be goofy,
but he's willing to not have a problem with drugs.
He stays out of that arena and he memorizes a playbook.
You know, Eric Decker was on our show yesterday.
He played briefly with Brady and with Peyton Manning.
I said, what do they have in common?
Here's your answer from Eric Decker.
Two of the greatest quarterbacks of our era.
And ultimately what it comes down to is their detail-oriented guys.
I mean, both competitors, both great.
leaders. But the way they prepare, the way they practice, I mean, there's no one like it. And that's
what's separated them and why I think they're so great. Yeah, details. Again, it sounds harsh what
this executive says. Of course, Cordrell Patterson ran the wrong route. He always does. Let's stop
being PC here. The guy's not committed to playing high-level football. And that's who they've
saddled Brady with. Could have had Danny Amandola, and then they bring in Josh Gordon.
who literally can't stay clean.
And I know the media is going to go.
It's a sad story.
Josh Gordon's main choices and they're bad ones.
And I had an addict in my family.
And I get it.
But if you want to know why Brady has separated from Belichick,
and basically now,
all Brady, Gronk and Belichick are
is a marriage that's staying together for the kids.
They don't like him.
And if you think Brady resents Belichick a little,
he has a right to resent Belichick.
Wouldn't keep Welker,
wouldn't keep Almondola,
wouldn't keep Dionne Lewis, and he's saddling him with this stuff,
a guy that won't even memorize the playbook, won't even put in the time and commit to memorizing a playbook.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, after that Detroit lost, it was just that.
I've used that soundbite about five times.
Brady's just done with it.
He's exhausted.
He's like, and I'll go back to this.
It is amazing.
The bears are just signing guys left and right.
The Eagles signing guys.
The Rams signing guys.
I mean, the Vikings, Stefan Diggs, Kirk Cousins are signing guys.
Has Brady ever said to Rob, Bob Kraft, the owner, where's the money going?
Because I'm taking a pay cut.
You're not paying into our running backs.
You're not paying our receivers.
You're not paying our defensive line.
You're not paying a pass rush or a ton.
Where's all New England's money going?
Brady's been taking a pay cut for 10 years.
The Rams, the Bears, the Eagles, money, money, money.
But the Green Bay Packers.
and the Patriots who have the two best quarterbacks in the league,
are always out of money.
Green Bay, we can't, we can't afford Khalil Mack.
Well, who are you paying?
Who's Green Bay paying?
You're not paying Aaron Rogers yet.
His contract isn't starting yet.
You're not even paying him yet.
And Brady's like, well, you're not paying me.
You're not paying my receivers.
You're not paying my backs?
You're paying the punter?
Who are you paying here?
Hour two, Greg Kosell, Michael, Stray.
hand in a packed second hour.
Kevin Durant, can you stop whining?
Come on, Kevin.
Nobody hates you.
Almost nobody.
That's next.
In L.A., it's the herd.
Ah, this is the herd hour, too.
Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, live in Los Angeles,
Iheart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1.
Joy Taylor is joining me.
NFL meat sandwich.
Greg CoSell in a couple of minutes.
Ten great minutes of football, pro football talk, and a couple of minutes with Greg
CoSell. So Michael Strayhan's joining us later tonight. Rams, Vikings, great NFL game. I saw a stat.
In fact, may have been Nick Wright that said it. The Rams are averaging one three and out per game.
That is 20% less than the second team in the NFL with that. The Rams are at a completely different
level. There's only one NFL team that scores 35 points and you think to yourself, you know,
they weren't very effective today. It's the best offensive.
in the NFL going up against one of the great defenses tonight in the NFL on Fox.
Rams Vikings is going to be fantastic tonight.
You know, before Greg Kosell comes on, you know, I was thinking about this,
and it's not a laughing matter, but it's amazing how your brand can change with just one incident.
And I'll give you an example.
If you drove, you got your license at 16 and you drove till 76 years old.
So what is that?
50 years, 60 years, you drove.
Okay.
And in that time, 60 years, you had one D.
after a Christmas party.
People would say, well, he had bad judgment, but by and large, that doesn't define him.
You're on the road for 50 or 60 years.
You had one DUI during a Christmas party.
But by getting just one more, two DUIs, people would say, oh, he's an alcoholic.
Just from one to two.
You'd go from bad judgment at a Christmas party to, oh, he's got a disease.
one incident can radically shape how people view you.
And that's just the way the world is.
We all make mistakes.
When you make that second mistake or you have that second incident,
you go from, oh, bad judgment to, oh, he's got a real problem.
And that's just the way it is.
It happens in politics.
It happens in sports.
Now, Aaron Rogers is practicing finally today.
And one of the reasons I thought the Packers should go after Khalil Mack,
because I don't want Aaron Rogers to be facing Khalil Mack 10 times in five years.
He's faced him for one half.
He's already hurt.
Aaron Rogers had two collarbone surgeries, torn a calf.
He has hurt again.
He couldn't practice last week.
He couldn't practice much this week.
He is practicing limited practice today.
Let me ask you this, Joy.
If Aaron Rogers had one more injury, would it be fair to say he's injury prone?
Mid-30s, he's injury-prone.
One more.
People may feel that right now.
It's funny.
Aaron Rogers, these are not opinions.
Aaron Rogers is hurt again.
Aaron Rogers is limited at practice again.
Aaron Rogers is missing practice regularly.
Again.
Again, the gap in pro sports, you can get hurt a couple times.
You go to that third injury where you have to leave a season and it all changes.
I mean, let's be honest about Andrew Luck.
If Andrew Luck misses more time this year, I view Andrew Luck differently.
I can no longer depend on Andrew Luck physically.
None of it is his fault.
If Aaron Rogers suffers another injury and misses more time, six games,
I think his brand changes.
I think his brand changes.
I think I look at Aaron Rogers and go,
oh yeah, he's talented, but like, you know, he and Andrew Luck,
you know, they just can't, it's not their fault,
but they just can't stay healthy.
And we talk about all these other guys that do stay healthy.
So it's a real thing.
He's practicing today.
He's an amazing talent.
But this is another reason.
Lordy, I don't want to see Kalil.
I mean, that Kale Mack, nine more times in five years, minimum,
it's kind of frightening if you're a Packer fan.
And with that, he's been an NFL film senior producer for nearly 40 years.
I call it our meat sandwich.
It's the smartest, most objective talk about football based on film that I think is provided anywhere in our industry.
And Greg Cosell is joining us now.
You know, I'm already seeing the stories.
Dax's no good.
It's Jason Garrett's fault.
Jason Garrett's too simplistic.
Okay.
What is the film say?
What is the issues with this cowboy offense?
Well, I always think, Colin, that you have to separate the scheme and the quarterback.
Scheme will help quarterbacks put up numbers without question,
and scheme can make a quarterback obviously very, very good.
I think there's issues with scheme in terms of getting receivers open within the timing of the drop.
And that's a concern.
But I would say that Prescott right now is not a very comfortable player in the pocket.
I would say that there's too much necessary movement that he does,
and that results in creating his own pressure at times and losing his ability to make throws.
And so I think that it's a combination of a number of things.
I could show you specific plays from this week where he missed throws.
Yes.
His accuracy when he's forced to go off his primary receiver sometimes, Greg, it's not very good.
And when he's, and think back to his first year when everything was pristine and he would drop back, be clean in the pocket, be comfortable, and deliver the ball without any people around him.
When the body start to get around him, he's uncomfortable, he lacks patience, he's starting to anticipate pressure, which is the worst thing the quarterback can do.
You cannot anticipate pressure because you end up breaking down, abandoning progressions, and then if you all of a sudden see something, you end up throwing the ball off balance.
It's a combination of things.
It's not all Prescott, but he's starting because of all of this himself not to play very well.
And he may be the kind of guy that needs a full team.
And you know what?
There are guys like that, and that's okay.
But that's what he probably is.
Well, looking here, Norv Turner arrives in Carolina.
And Cam now is Mr. 67% complete?
I mean, this has always been my knock that he's in a persistent.
league. He's not a precision
thrower. And it looks
like something's working with Norv's
system, right? Well, it's old.
It's a lot of what Norv has always
done with the play action under
center throwing the intermediate routes.
And then the multi-dimensional
running game with all the backfield
actions and the multiple
run concepts within one play
of which Cam is a major
part of because of his running ability.
So you have
more, you have more stress
and pressure on a defense, you have more defined throws for Cam.
And one thing that's clear, too, is he does want Cam to throw the shorter throws and the checkdowns
when necessary, and that will always raise your completion percentage.
And keep in mind, he only threw 25 balls this week.
You know, that's not usually normal, but I think in an ideal world, Norv would much rather
have Cam be closer to that than 40 or 45 throws.
Oh, absolutely.
No question.
Garrett Gough plays tonight.
Sean McVeigh's system is very clever.
Two teams look different to me.
Matt Nagy and Sean McVease system.
A lot of motion, fun to watch.
I think golf's a better player.
Now, we're getting into this thing.
I'm hearing this now.
Well, you know, he's kind of a system quarterback.
Jared Gough made a throw last week to Robert Woods.
That was about as good a throw as anybody in the National Football League made.
I really like golf.
I think he throws a beautiful ball.
I think he's accurate.
But there are those now that are saying, you know, he's just kind of running a great system.
What do you see on film with golf?
let me ask you a question. So what? Wasn't Joe Montana running a great system with Bill Walsh?
Yes. I don't understand. I mean, I'm being honest with you're, it's not you saying it, Colin.
My response would be, so what? It's a terrific mix of a great system with an efficient quarterback who's a rhythm, timing player, who's an easy thrower of the football, who's consistently accurate.
So I don't, I don't, you know, not you again, I don't understand what the issue is. So why can we just say, you know,
what? It's a really efficient passing
game. The quarterback plays at a high level.
The system presents defined
reeds. They have good players.
Let's move on. Yeah, no.
The throw I'm showing it right now to Robert
Woods. You know, it was one of those
throws. You know, I was saying this. Tom
Cruz or whoever's a great actor, Tom
Cruz doesn't have to be great in every scene.
There'll be a couple of scenes in a movie where
Jack Nicholson pops and you're like, oh, God, that's why
Jack Nicholson's a movie star. Jared
Goff isn't amazing on every throw,
either is Carson Wentz or Drew Bree.
but the great ones will make a couple of throws in a game, Greg, and you're just like, oh, wow.
Now, what people are waiting to see, obviously, Colin, and then we'll move on is if they get into a lot of close games,
and he has to make these kinds of throws in the fourth quarter.
That's what people always wait to see, and that's how they make their judgments ultimately about quarterbacks.
You know, obviously last year was just his second year and his first with McVeigh,
and they got to the playoffs and they lost, and they did not have a good offensive game.
So people are waiting for that.
But up to this point, it's a really good system with a quarterback who's very efficient.
All good.
All right.
Tom Brady's struggling.
I said before the season, this looks different.
Cordarell Patterson, he doesn't trust.
Josh Gordon, I don't trust.
Julian Edelman's not there.
I don't think they have a special running back.
Gronk's still gronk.
But he doesn't quite feel as quick as twitchy as he used to be.
I don't see their dynamic offensive players.
What is the tape show?
Well, I'm so glad you asked me about that because Matt Patricia took a page out of the Bill Belichick book.
You probably remember in the Super Bowl in which they beat the Rams, the greatest show on turn.
Belichick used what we call a bullseye tactic where he had his edge rusher,
go attack Marshall Falk when he was offset in the backfield.
In other words, rushed the quarterback through Falk.
Well, Patricia decided on third down that there were two players he had to stop.
Rikowski and White, okay? Because the other players he could match up to, so what he did, and most people
will not do this, is he played with seven defensive backs. So he doubled Grank with a corner and a
safety. He matched up a safety man-to-man on white, good match-up, and then he had three corners
available to play man-to-man on the three wide receivers. So he took away Grankowski with the
double. He took away White with the bullseye tactic and the safety covering him man-to-man.
they had no passing game on third down.
Now, the dolphins won't do that this week.
They don't play like that.
But it was a brilliant piece of coaching by Matt Patricia.
What would you mean they don't play like that?
Why wouldn't everybody play like that?
It's not like neuroscience.
I mean, just play like that.
Right, but see, the 7 dBs and specific things like that come from the Belichick system.
Matt Burke is the D.C. for the dolphins.
He plays almost all nickel.
He hardly plays anything other than five defensive backs.
and I went back and looked at what he did last year.
He didn't do anything like this.
Now, could he this week?
We'll have to wait and see.
But that's not been in his history and his track record.
But it was just brilliant by Patricia.
All right.
Deshawn Watson, last year, wow.
This year, meh.
What's the difference?
Well, his numbers are still good.
You know, fantasy people like him.
But I think, you know, here's what the tape shows, in my opinion.
And this is something he's going to have to work through.
Drop his eyes and be concerned about the rush, Colin.
And yes, people can say, well, he's playing with a rookie left tackle and a second year right tackle,
and they're not playing particularly well.
That's true.
But as a quarterback, you still cannot drop your eyes and start to be aware of the rush.
So that's something he's going to have to work through.
They're going to have to work through it as a coaching staff, maybe help him with quicker throws,
more quick rhythm, throws, do things to get him more into the rhythm.
But, you know, he fell behind last week.
My guess is he probably threw for most of those yards in the fourth quarter.
Yeah.
You know, I watched Baker Mayfield, and I still wouldn't have picked him number one,
but I always said he won't be a bus because he throws it too accurate of football.
I was kind of impressed with him.
I mean, not blown away, but I was kind of impressed.
Were you impressed?
Yeah, I was.
I thought he looked like he did in college.
The strength of his game is working between the numbers.
He's got a very quick compact delivery with excellent velocity in the short-to-intermediate area.
He's accurate, as you said.
He's decisive.
That's what I like.
Now, the more he plays, the more teams will get a book on him in the context.
of that offense, but he showed quick ability to eliminate and isolate.
And by that, I mean to eliminate what wasn't there and isolate what was there.
And I love the fact that he's a turn a loose guy, Colin.
In the NFL, it's like Pat Mahomes.
In the NFL, you've got to be willing to turn it loose.
Yeah, you can't, the minute you start thinking about your last pick, you're done.
I'm a big believer in that.
You have to have a very short memory.
That's why I like Donald and Andrew Luck is they make bad mistakes.
and they just overcut. They just don't care.
And I think that's a real thing.
By the way, the Raiders are O-N-3, and I'm not a fan of hiring a coach who hasn't been in the
league for 10 years.
But, you know, I watched them last week, and I watched them against Denver.
They don't look like a terrible O'N-3 team to me.
I kind of like some of the things the Raiders are doing.
What does a film say?
Well, I think one thing Gruden is really working on, and I remember reading his book years
ago, and one of the most important things to him for a quarterback is completions.
And I think that they're trying to develop that whole mindset,
because there's a lot of quick rhythm throws, a lot of short throws, not much at the intermediate
and deeper levels.
I think they're trying to build their offense.
Now, I'm not going to sit here and say they're ready for an offensive explosion this week,
but I think they're getting incrementally better.
Okay.
And we'll see how that progresses, but I think that's what's important to Gruden, completions
for his quarterback.
Finally, your big play, it's Carson Wentz.
You know, I watched some of this Colts Eagles game, and we kind of predicted on the show.
We thought it would be close because they're dink.
and Duncan a little bit. Frank right now is
Dinkin and Duncan a little bit underneath stuff with
Andrew Luck, maybe it's an arm issue,
and I thought they'd be a little conservative with Carson Wentz,
but you saw a play you want to show us on tape.
Well, yeah, just before we get to that, a very quick point.
The Eagles are lacking in a wide receiver right now.
See, this is what teams, this is good coaching.
They ended up playing two-thirds of their snaps
with either two tight ends or three tight ends on the field
because they didn't feel they had quality-wide receivers.
So that's what they did in this game.
And this play, and let's start it right now,
This play came at the end of their first possession, and it was a touchdown, obviously, to Dallas Goddard.
Now, what they did here, first of all, they have three tight ends on the field.
They have Zach Gertz, they have Dallas Goddard, and they have Josh Perkins who split out to the right,
and he's almost built like a wide receiver.
He's long and lanky.
And what Wentz was looking at was a two-safety look.
That's what it looks like to start, two safeties.
But one safety on the side of Goddard starts to drive.
drop down. So now what you have is the safety dropping down, and he's no longer a deep safety.
And Goddard is running a seam route on that side. So now it's the other safety that has to become
a factor in the throw. But Wendt does a terrific job of recognizing all this, looking to his left
to hold that safety, then coming back to Goddard to the right. And because he held the safety,
that other safety whose Malik Hooker cannot get there. So this ended up being pitch and catch.
beautifully done, well designed in the red zone, and once executed it perfectly.
Boy, that is nice.
That's one of your better ones.
That's a really nice play.
Greg Kosel, 40-year, senior producer, NFL films talking to you again, Greg.
Thank you so much.
Thanks, Colin.
Coming up next, is Kevin Durant really this insecure?
That's coming up.
Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.
Thursday nights are about to get a lot bigger as Fox becomes the new network.
home for Thursday night football. It's the Vikings and the undefeated Rams in a battle of
NFC heavyweights tonight at 730 Eastern on Fox. Also live on NFL network and streaming on
Prime Video. Now it's a game. This will be a great game. It's a seven point spread. If I was a
betting man, Blazing Five is tomorrow. I would take the Vikings plus seven. The Vikings are the
play. Rams may win, but the Vikings are the play. The Vikings just got embarrassed. There's a golden
rule. This is not college football. In the NFL, if a good team gets humiliated, they're
great the following week. It is a golden rule. Pittsburgh Steelers look like crap. They get ripped for a
week by the press and the media and fans. They come back on Monday night football and they win.
In the NFL, that doesn't mean everybody that gets crushed comes back. You have to be a good team.
Minnesota is a really good team. And they got a humiliated and they didn't just lose.
They were down 27 and nothing at home to Buffalo to a rookie quarterback that I didn't think was ready
to play in the NFL. Their hair is going to be on fire tonight. The Viking.
are going to play incredible football tonight.
And I think you've got a field goal game either way.
By the way, one of the things that, you know, I don't have a lot of pet peeves.
I mean, I don't like traffic, but you don't like traffic.
Joy, do you like traffic?
I, in fact, don't like traffic, Colin, coincidentally.
You know, the things I don't like are things everybody doesn't like.
I'm not a pet peeve guy.
But increasingly, here's the thing that's wearing me out.
when successful people who have great lives play a victim.
Oh, woe is me.
Whoa is me.
Kevin Durant's getting really annoying.
Kevin Durant is upset because he is not even,
he's not being considered for defensive player of the year.
Here he is.
Listen to this.
Ackleys, that stuff, that stuff is kind of long gone for me
unless it's like, you know,
finals or something like that where it's probably pretty even
but you know regular season awards i mean i'm never going to get a look when it comes to that
especially playing hair for the wars you know they're not going to give me
anything even if it's on the fence i have to be clear-cut better than everybody for me to get a look
so how do you think that is i mean it's just pure hate for me obviously oh god oh kevin your life
so let me ask you how many years has kevin durant been in golden state
Two. How many championships has he won? Two. How many MVP of the finals has he won? Two. How many times has he beaten LeBron? Two. If you'd have laid it out two years ago and said, you're going to win two titles. You're going to beat LeB both times and you've got to be named finals MVP twice. You'd be like, check, check, I'll take that. And Kevin Durant, you know, pure hate. Nobody likes me. There are real victims in America all over.
And then there are successful people who play the victim.
You've got to give me a break on this.
Dude, we all make choices.
One of the reasons I chose when I came to FS1 not to do politics is because Trump became
president and the country was very divisive and it was very polarizing and it was too much
hate.
And I thought, I just don't want to get into that like circus.
I used to talk politics.
And I'm like, now it's too divisive.
It's just not, I don't want to get all the blowback.
I got kids, families are getting older.
I want to do other stuff.
I don't want to be on Twitter all day yelling at people
or have people yelling at me on that stuff.
I don't care.
But if you decide to go into it and many people have in my industry,
just be prepared for the blowback.
Don't whine about the blowback.
Everybody yells at me on Twitter.
Well, you want into politics.
If you go into politics in 2018, it's a nasty business.
Half the country hate you and half the country loves you
and half the country wants you fired.
So if you choose to go into politics,
don't whine about what people say to me on Twitter.
I don't go into politics.
Kevin, you chose the easier route.
And the minute you chose Golden State and they were already really good, this was the politics.
This was the blowback.
You could have done the harder thing.
You couldn't stay to Oklahoma City.
You could have been the best player, the go-to.
You chose to go into a great team, knowing full well, adding you to that team was going to be a dynasty.
Don't go and then complain about the country.
blowback. You're not a victim when you choose the exit off the interstate. If you're a sports reporter
and go into politics, don't whine about how you're treated. And if you're an NBA star and you
join a great championship team, don't whine that not everybody roots for me anymore. Of course they
don't. Of course they don't root for you. You took an easier route. You joined a great team.
But I mean, there are real victims, and then there are rich people and successful people that think they're victims.
And Kevin Durant, dude.
He's also undervalued for his defensive ability.
He's a good.
Because he's such a great shooter, and he is so consistent with that.
You're right.
But does everybody realize that James Hardin and Westbrook have won the last two MVP's, and LeBron is significantly better than.
both. Right. I don't think it's something to complain about. And he's complaining about it.
But he has a point, but it's not necessarily something to complain about. Phil Jackson, one NBA
coach of the year. Sam Mitchell has an NBA coach of the year. We just did a whole list of
unbelievable all-time superstars in sports that never won MVP's. You guys complaining about stuff.
They're real victims. Let's listen to them. Not Kevin Durant. I also didn't win six
man of the year, nor was I nominated for an
Oscar.
Joy with the news.
No, no, no, no, no.
Turn on the news. This is
the herd line news.
So Drew Breeze already holds
records for completion percentage in a single season
and in a career, and he actually has
three of the foremost accurate seasons
in NFL history. Yeah. So there's
not a whole lot of debate about who the most
accurate NFL passer is, but he still thinks he has room to
add another record through three games
this season, Breeze has completed 80.6% of his passes. And he was asking keep these numbers up.
And he said, why not?
I don't see why not. I mean, listen, it's not easy. It's identifying matchups. It's making sure
that you get positive plays. And, you know, just about every place in just about every case
of completion is a positive play, right? And so I'm just going to keep doing my job and
keep trying to make great decisions. You know, we think Drew Breeze is a great all-time player.
but when we talk about the greatest, it's always Sprady and Montana and then Rogers gets put in there.
Do we undervalue Drew Breeze?
I feel like we overlook really how great he is.
A couple weeks ago, we were just talking about quarterbacks.
And just for a reference point, I put a list up.
I said, here's the 10 best quarterbacks I've ever seen.
And I put Drew Breeze on the list and it got major pushback.
And I'm like, folks, are you?
80.6% of his passes, that's insane.
He's going to end up with 35 NFL passing records.
and do we look at him and say, oh, he's always had the best backs, best receivers,
has he always had the best offensive line?
Like, he's done it largely with good, not special players.
I mean, Peyton Manning had better people around him.
Peyton Manning had Marvin Harrison, Edgier and James.
Peyton Manning had mostly really, really high-end offensive players.
Drew Breed has had guys.
Mike Thomas now is great, but he's had guys for a lot of his career.
It's really impressive what he's doing and at 40.
So coming out of college, Baker Mayfield was compared to a lot of other people, but mostly to Johnny Mansell.
And that's not a comparison that John Gruden made yesterday.
Gruden likes his grinders, and he said Mayfield has that in him, so much so that he invoked the name of a gritty quarterback who played under Gruden in his final two seasons in Tampa.
He just makes a lot of plays, you know, when nothing's there.
You know, he makes plays when there is something there, the pocket is clean, he can hit the open receivers.
But when nobody's open, and he has to move around, he has a lot of Jeff Garcia in him.
He'll die for first downs.
He'll extend plays.
He's got a really good competitive spirit about him.
I love the way he plays.
I know he'll be very excited for his first career start.
We've got to do a great job, giving him some looks and get some pressure on him.
I got to tell you something.
That's the smartest thing Gruden has said since he's been coached.
He is Jeff Garcia.
John, do you know?
because San Francisco's had Montana and Steve Young, people forget.
Jeff Garcia was pretty good.
And you know what?
I've always struggled.
What's the comp with Baker Mayfield?
And I have always said he's a better version of Case Keenham.
This is the right one.
He's certainly not Johnny Mansell.
Oh, he's way better than Johnny Mansell.
Johnny Mansell wasn't very good thrower.
Baker's a good thrower.
Very good thrower.
And now he's not big enough for me.
I think he runs around too much and I don't like the nonsense off the field.
But Jeff Garcia is absolutely a good.
comp. Jeff was a little undersized,
had a better arm than people thought,
and was just a competitor.
Jeff Garcia was like a
better version of Alex Smith.
And that's kind of... It's not a bad
comparison or an insult at all.
He played 11 seasons. He made four Pro Bowls.
That's
not a bad career for Baker Mayfield, at least
you know, the floor.
So finally, there's been a lot of
speculation about where
Kyrie Irving will play after the last year of his
contract. But
next year might not be
a summertime elite free agent
year for Kyrie Irving
an interview with Rachel Nichols
he said his intention is to stay in Boston
If I ever try to think about that thought
of going elsewhere, it would be like, what are you thinking?
We're pretty effing good here.
Like we're pretty effing good for not just this year
but for years to come.
So, yeah, I'm looking forward to that.
I got a beating the Warriors in the finals.
Get careful. You're yourself boxed in there.
Look, I mean, it was,
wouldn't be a surprise if he ended up staying.
But I think there might be a little bit of wishful thinking.
Why would you want to leave?
What we want the next to be interesting and good?
So we're like, oh, maybe Kyrieu'll go to the next.
Let me ask you so.
The Celtics are really becoming the Warriors East.
Is that you've got a star guard and a really good two guard, Jalen Brown.
And you have these forwards, Gordon Hayward and Tatum, one young, one older that are really good.
And you have a good big, but you're not driven by your big.
Horford. This is one thing I don't understand. I don't understand these Jimmy
Butler's who want to be the man. Why don't you want to play with a bunch of good players?
Kobe Bryant liked to be the man. Kobe never wanted to be the only man. Do you want to drive
to work every day knowing I've got to carry my show? When I drive to work every morning, I'm like,
oh, Joey knows what she's doing, John knows what he's doing, Greg knows what he's doing.
The difference between wanting to be the man and be the only man.
If I'm Kyrie, I can score.
I got Hayward and Tatum who can hit threes.
Jalen Brown's becoming a really good player.
Al Horford can hit as a veteran.
Why would you want to leave that to be the man?
Boston's perfect.
Egos are a tricky thing.
I'm not saying that that's Kyrie.
Kyrie obviously wasn't comfortable playing with LeBron,
and he is in a great position now.
And obviously, he just said he's happy,
and they are going to be very good.
So this is a great place for Kyrie to be in.
And you need, it's a team game.
You need pieces around you who are also good.
Do you want to be, like you said, do you want to have to carry your team?
And then what?
And then all the blame is on you.
You can't have a bad game.
Between Shaq and Pau Gasol,
Kobe at one point just stopped playing in a playoff game against like Phoenix or so.
I forget who it was.
He was just like, I'm done.
I'm not going to take a shot in the second half.
I got Smush Parker.
He used to make Smush Parker jokes.
And it was like, this idea, like, I don't understand it.
Like, people banged on Kevin Durant because he joined a good team.
It's like, Kevin Durant's still winning MVP in the final.
He just doesn't want to have to carry his team every night.
Joy Taylor, the news.
Well, that's the news.
And thanks for stopping by.
The herd line news.
Michael Strayhan's right around the corner.
By the way, there's a gronk story that's out there.
Chris Grankowski, who is Gronk, Rob Grunkowski's brother, went in a radio station in Boston
and had this quote he said, I can tell by my brother's emotions, facial features,
super frustrated with it.
He just wants to get the ball in his hands and make plays.
You can't do it when nobody else is getting open.
This was Chris Grankowski talking about his brother, Rob, or Gronk, his frustration with the Patriots.
Let me tell you something.
I don't know him well, but I've met the Gronk family.
There's not a lot of BS with the Gronk family.
It is, they're not capable of weaving alternate narratives and being clen.
That's not who they are.
This is the truth.
Like, this is the truth.
A couple days ago, Gronk said something.
He confirmed a rumor about a trade and this was Gronk taking a shot at Belichick.
And Brady's already taken a couple of public shots at Belichick.
Remember this couple days ago from Grunk?
Yeah, it happened.
And Brady's my quarterback.
That's all.
Wasn't going anywhere without Brady.
There's no reason to say that.
There was no reason to confirm it.
There was no reason to say Brady.
Brady and Gronk don't like Belichick anymore.
It's over.
Now, they have a common goal.
And if you're in a relationship and you have a common goal at work, two things happen.
You go in, you're a pro, you get your work done because you're a pro.
And the second thing is, whenever you can take subtle shots at your boss, you do.
Brady and Gronk now repeated subtle shots at Belichick.
They hate him.
They're not going to go public.
And they're both pros.
You've all had a boss you hate.
Two things happen when you hate your boss.
You go to work and do your thing because you're a pro.
But when you can take little shots at your boss and people can hear it, you do.
Brady's done it multiple times in the last six months.
Gronk's doing it and his brother's confirming it.
Dude's not happy.
This is a marriage of convenience.
They're staying married because of the kids.
Gronk and Brady are totally over Belichick.
Michael Strayhan right around the corner.
It's the hurt.
Thursday nights are about to get a lot bigger as Foxx.
becomes the new network home for Thursday night football.
It's the Vikings and the undefeated Rams in a battle of NFC heavyweights.
Tonight at 730 Eastern on Fox, also live on the NFL network and streaming on Prime
video.
Now it's the game.
By the way, Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw, along with our guest Michael Strayhan,
he'll be the new host because, you know, Michael, he's not busy enough.
If you'd have told me 20 years ago, because I remember he broke it in the early 90s,
Michael Strayhan would be a star on television.
I'd be like, he's a defensive lineman.
It's always quarterbacks.
And Michael, are you ever a little surprised?
Good Morning America.
Fox, game shows.
You ever pinch yourself and think, I'm not even sure I thought this would work out like it's worked out?
Man, every day.
Every day I wake up, I'm like, holy smoke, do I really get to do this?
But yeah, I'm surprised.
I'm like, you're defensive blind.
I didn't get anything like this.
We were just kind of the big guys and put on the helmet, chase the quarterback's
and the quarterback's had all the love.
Well, you deserve all of it.
You work your tail off.
I was thinking about something the other day.
You broke in with the New York Giants in 1993.
If I recall, that was the last year of Lawrence Taylor, 1993.
And you were, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you
overlapped in a year.
When people talk about Khalil Mack, I have said he's the closest thing I've seen to Lawrence Taylor,
though I don't know if they'll ever be a Lawrence Taylor.
Because you entered the league when he was leaving it,
what do you remember about Lawrence the player?
Well, the one thing that I got, you know,
he may have been leaving the league,
and I may have caught him his last year,
but he was still incredible.
I mean, it was incredible to watch.
It's incredible to watch the game.
It's incredible to watch him at practice.
And the things he was able to do,
even at that point, coming off of the torn Achilles,
were things that got completely healthy could never do.
And Earl Leggett, our defense of the blind coach,
used to run the film back and, okay, try this and try that.
You see how this guy did this and how this guy did that?
Well, he was showing something Lawrence did one day, and he just stopped the film after running it back
about 15 times that said, I can't teach you that.
Lawrence was just that special.
And Khalil Mack is an incredible player.
I mean, the way he started out this season is unbelievable.
But there's not, and there never will be another Lawrence Taylor.
There'll be a first Khalil Mack and some other guys be compared to him.
but Lawrence Taylor's on a strategy here.
I don't even say anybody's going to be the next Lawrence Taylor.
Nobody can be.
Yeah, I agree with you, but I do think Khalil's really special,
and some of his stuff you can't teach.
Oh, yeah.
You know, I was saying that stardom is an interesting thing.
Kendall Jenner doesn't sing.
She doesn't act.
She doesn't dance.
But in Hollywood, she would walk in in a restaurant and be the biggest star 99% of the time.
You can't explain stardom.
And you are a star.
You got personality.
You played in New York.
I can't add all the things up, but you're a star.
I got to tell you, Baker Mayfield hasn't played a game.
He's in the top 10 in Jersey sales.
Michael, outside of the game tonight, Rams Vikings.
The most excited I am to watch a game Sunday is Baker Mayfield against the Raiders.
There is something to this kid, and I don't think he's as good as Carson Wentz,
but do you kind of sense we're looking at the next star in the league?
Well, when was the last time you were excited about really seeing a Rans game?
I mean, you know, I was just hoping for them to get a win.
And the way they got the win, you know, when they played the jet with something,
because here he comes off the bench.
And I always say to people, he has the, certain people have the it factor.
They walk in a room and you know they're there.
They leave the room and you can feel the energy leave with him.
He is that guy.
He has that.
And it was as if he got into the game and his teammates.
They played better.
Their energy picked up.
The stadium picked up.
My TV screens seem brighter and more clear.
I don't know what the kid, he just has it.
And I'm excited to see him play.
And I think, you know, he's a lot of people may have that swagger of, you know,
Johnny Mansell or whatever it may be in and all that.
But I just think he's a, they like to compare those guys.
I don't think there's any comparison.
I think that this kid, he's a walk-on.
your walk-on and you win a Heisman trophy, there's something special that you have and a desire
that you have, and that desire for him comes with his play on the field, and I'll just just come through
in his personality.
Thursday night football, Vikings Rams.
Coverage begins at 7.30 Eastern on Fox 430 Pacific.
Michael will host it with Terry and Howie, and I've worked at Fox for a couple of years.
It's the best group of guys I've ever worked with, and I can't wait for tonight.
John Gruden is interesting.
You know, I was saying a couple of weeks ago, 10 years ago, a coach could walk into a locker room and say, nobody talks politics.
And that was understood.
If you walked into a locker room and said that today, you'd get pushback.
Gruden's been out of the league for 10 years.
Players have changed.
They have stronger opinions.
Players are now empowered.
They have shoe deals.
Do you think the Gruden thing's going to work?
That's the hard thing.
That's why we look and think why certain coaches, he's had success.
in the NFL before.
So I think maybe he can adapt to that.
I think he's going to have to adapt to that
to survive. Tom Cawson adapted,
to be honest with you. And you look
at coaches who didn't have success in NFL.
Nick State is extremely popular,
extremely great in college,
and the pro is not much success because you do
have to adapt to the time to the player.
You have players now who have choices
that can become free agents.
You can say, I don't want to be here anymore
just like Khalil Mack and leave.
When you're having,
And you're coaching like you're a college coach where you have guys who you think are on scholarship
and they're going to leave after four years because they have nowhere else to go.
Or it's going to be tough to the big transfer.
They can't play.
You know, pro football is not that.
Players right now in the financial situations that they're in definitely have more power.
And you, it's a different league.
It's a different player.
Even for me, I think differently than these young guys.
And I don't, you know, and I was not that long ago, 11 years ago.
Yeah.
So it's completely different.
It's going to be a tough recruit.
And I think it's going to be the toughest thing as a player adjustment.
Yeah.
Co-host a good morning, America.
News.
God, he talks news now.
He has to talk some politics and football.
And what a life, Michael Strayhan, tonight with Howie and Terry.
You're a good dude.
I appreciate you giving us time.
You're busy as heck.
Michael, I appreciate it.
I appreciate it, man, and I'm looking forward to it.
It's going to be great.
Thursday night.
I mean, those guys make it fun every time.
And we know we got a lot to live up to that.
We have to keep up with our, you know, all guys at home on Sundays with Kurt, Jay, and everybody else.
So we got to represent him well tonight.
Good talking to you, man.
You too, buddy.
Thanks.
Michael Strahan with Terry and Howie tonight.
I think the Vikings and the Rams, Vikings are going to play great.
Because the Rams are kind of blowing people out, maybe a little comfortable.
They're at home.
And here comes Minnesota that just got humiliated on national television.
And I think the Vikings are going to play great.
By the way, Akeeb Taleb is out for this game and probably out for two months at corner.
Marcus Peters is also out, although he should be back within a month.
So right now, the Vikings can fourth in the NFL in passing, and both starting corners, corners for the Rams are out.
Both starting corners.
And they're good ones.
Marcus Peters is as good a corner as the NFL has.
He's out tonight and probably for a month.
And Akib Taleb's out for two months.
he's on the IR and Akit Thelib's a really good corner.
So they're both out.
So the line is seven.
If I was a guy that believed in betting, I would take the Vikings tonight.
I think it's a very close competitive football game.
And again, when you're humiliated in the NFL, good teams that get humiliated,
always play great the following week.
New England, by the way, will probably play pretty well this week.
Pittsburgh on Monday night football looked like crap the week before.
We'll play very well on Monday night football.
Vikings will play really well.
tonight.
I should put out one of those, what are those things called the, you go to the internet,
Twitter, is Kevin Durant, do you like him?
A poll?
A poll.
Do you like him or hate him?
I can't believe Kevin Durant thinks he's hated.
No, Colin, there's a thing that people just like, if I did a poll.
I'm not going to go to this to hate.
Do you love Durant or do you hate Durant?
What would it be?
I mean, I like Kevin Durant.
It would be 90-10 love.
But people, no.
People are angry.
They think they're angry at Kevin Durant for going to the Warriors.
There's Warriors fatigue.
They think the Warriors is being like elitist, you know?
Trust me.
Really?
Yes.
I don't.
They think he took the easy way out.
I don't agree with that, but people think that.
Rod Woodson, next hour, Dollar Shave Club has amazing razors,
razor care, hairstyling, shower gel, shaving products.
Any way you want to look, smell, feel your best.
Go to Dollar Shave Club.
com slash Colin C-O-L-I-N.
They had a starter set for five bucks.
Hour three in L.A.
This is the herd, wherever you may be and however you may be listening live in Los Angeles, IHeartRadio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1, Joy Taylor's joining me.
I'm not into these polls on the internet, but I'm going to do one.
Nothing in the world is right anymore.
I don't understand.
Everything in the world I thought was true isn't true.
I have just been told by Ross, and he's my digital guy, our digital guy.
He comes over and he goes, I hate Kevin Durant.
I'm like, who hates Kevin Durant?
I've been trying to tell you this all show, Colin.
People hate Kevin Durant.
There was a, most of Kevin Durant's career, he has, I don't want to say, been given a pass,
but all of the attention and critiques and, you know, hard coverage has been given to LeBron.
So most of his career.
So Kevin Durant has a.
been given the love he deserves. No, he's been given
lots of love. And then he chose to go to Golden State
who a lot of people hate because
people hate dynasties. They hate winning.
If you're not a part of the winning. And he joined a 73 and
19 and has won two championships and two finals MVP. So people feel like he
took the easy way out. So if he walked down the street,
if I was walking down the street and here came Kevin Durant out of a pizza
place, people would go, boo, I hate you. I think they would
go like, oh my God, Kevin Durant. Will you sign?
Well, most people would say, oh, my God, it's Kevin Durant.
Can you take a picture?
Can you sign my shirt or whatever?
But there are a lot of people that don't like Kevin Durant.
Okay, let's make a guess.
I'm going to do a poll.
Ross, if you're listening, do a poll.
I'm just going to put up, Kevin Durant, love him, Hayden.
Are we putting this on the vortex of insanity?
We're putting this on Twitter?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Okay.
What's your guess?
I mean, Twitter.
What is your guess?
I'm going to guess it's 60-40.
Well, that's nothing then.
So then he's not really hated.
No, I mean, that's quite polarizing.
That's almost half.
Yeah, but half the people on Twitter hate themselves.
Well, that's why I said.
Are we putting this on the vortex of insanity?
Then, I mean, that's what Twitter is.
If he's truly hated, though, it should be 90, 10, or 80, 20.
Because everybody's hated on Twitter.
People, so if 60, 40 tells me.
So you feel like it should be higher?
Well, if, like, to your point, if everybody...
Or to Katie's point, if everyone hates him.
If everybody hates him, then on Twitter, which is just a...
a vortex of hate. He'll be a 90-10. You could have a point there. Okay, so maybe on Twitter.
I'll go 75 then. You've talked to you. 75, 25. Yes. God. Yeah, Kevin Durant does have a lot of
burner accounts. He may vote like 6,000 times on this. Nothing in the world is right. If I'm wrong
on this, I think it's going to be close to 50-50. I think his gauge of how many people hate him
is off. I think there is a group of people that hate Kevin Durant, but I think overwhelmingly most
people think he is great. And I think overall down the road, most people are going to think he
made the right decision. Okay, so go to my Twitter account. They're going to put it up here in a couple
minutes. I think it's going to be 50-50. I think people love Kevin Garnatic. You know, and
everybody else thinks he's hated. Ross just came up to me and go, yeah, I hate him. And I was like,
you're not even hateful. Okay. Coming up tonight on Fox, Vikings Rams going to be great.
15 minutes, Hall of Famer Rod Woodson says slow down on all this Baker Mayfield stuff.
Thursday, let's be honest, Baker Mayfield was a star. And this is how big of a star Baker's teammate
Richard Higgins thinks he'll be right here. Baker might be the next big thing and he might be
on the LeBron wall, what I like to call it. You feel me? So I'm excited to see what he can bring
to the team, you know, nothing but good things. Here's an amazing thing about Baker Mayfield.
he is already top 10 in NFL jersey sales.
Why is that a big deal?
Folks, he hasn't started a game yet.
Everybody else on the list, you know, has started games.
Tom Brady, Julio Jones, Odell Beckham, Luke Keakley.
But the Jets and the Browns got a TV rating about a week ago, and it was shocking to me.
It was a shocking TV rating, and it wasn't about the Jets, and it wasn't about Sam Darnold.
It was a Baker-Mayfield TV rating.
And I always try to be a consumer when I do my show.
What do I care about?
And so when I drive into work in the morning, what interests me?
I want to be a viewer.
I want to be a listener.
I don't want to think like me.
I want to think like you.
And the game I cannot wait to watch this week, this Sunday, is Baker-Mayfield
at Oakland.
That's the game that interests me the most.
Is it because Baker-Mayfield's great?
he's not even the best quarterback in that game.
He checks all the boxes.
He positioned quarterback, police video, profoundly popular in college, controversial.
He's got commercials and good ones all over television.
He's an underdog.
He's in a city and a franchise that's called losers like the Cubs, and he's a winner.
And I'll tell you this.
LeBron in Ohio was a Messiah.
People never thought they related to LeBron.
He was like a gift.
He was born there.
And you looked up at LeBron like people in the West look up at God.
Johnny Carson's an old TV star in America.
The late Johnny Carson used to always say,
even though Johnny was much bigger in Hollywood
than movie stars in his day,
when you go to a theater,
you're looking up at movie stars.
You're intimidated by movie stars at a theater.
But everybody watched Johnny Carson on a TV,
sitting down in a living room.
So Johnny was a bigger star in Hollywood
than anybody else.
but people would go up to Johnny at a restaurant and bother him.
I think Baker Mayfield is the biggest star in the NFL
that nobody knows is a star yet.
top 10 in jersey sales.
He's never started a game.
I want to shift to this.
When I was very young and a sportscaster, I was very lucky.
I got a big break.
My first job was in Las Vegas.
And Mike Tyson was emerging as this amazing boxer.
And one of the things I always loved about Tyson wasn't his boxing is that he had a real sense
and admiration and love for the history of boxing.
You could talk boxing with Mike Tyson.
He'd tell you about Tunney and Dempsey and Ali
as he had a real appreciation for the history of the sport.
It's one of the things I like about LeBron James.
LeBron James, you can go 1970s NBA, 1980s NBA, 1980s,
1990s.
Because LeBron understands history.
And Larry Bird should have played four more years.
but Larry Bird was a gym rat and his legs gave out and Kobe Bryant was a gym rat
and would practice and practice at a high level and his body wore down
and Michael Jordan partied like crazy cigars, steaks, late night card games and his body
deteriorated.
LeBron James knows his legacy is now all about being able to play.
in June. It is not a coincidence in the last six years as LeBron has hit the back nine in his career
that every January, his teams are struggling. He doesn't practice anymore. He doesn't want to practice.
He doesn't want to be playing preseason games. And you can yell at LeBron for that. But there's two
reasons it's happening because LeBron has a real understanding of the history of the game.
And he has watched his idols and his contemporaries fall apart because they overpractice.
They plan games that don't matter.
And he's not going to do that.
And the second thing is, and this is blaming the public and the media, everybody after LeBron won his first title, started comparing him to Michael.
And all of you out there, the media and the fans, said, no,
Six for six, six for six, six for six.
It didn't matter that LeBron was going to blow Michael away in every statistical category.
It didn't matter because you made it all about finals.
And so LeBron, like he has done with basketball history, listened.
He listened to the media.
He listened to the fans.
And he said, I'm not going to waste my legs at practice.
And I'm not going to waste my legs in the NBA preseason.
And I'm going to start taking a bunch of days off into regular season.
He did it because of you and his appreciation for.
history. The Lakers, I believe, will win about 47, 48 games, but they won't be very good in October,
November, and December. LeBron spends $1 million a year on his body, eats, sleeps, rests,
doesn't practice. He is seeking a career extension. And when he said that yesterday,
I'll be ready for June. I'm not going to do preseason. That's his appreciation for the game
and watching stars deteriorate Kobe, Bird, MJ,
and it's also listening to you.
Because we're the ones that kept saying six for six,
June's all that matters, all that matters is finals,
we don't care.
And LeBron's like, all right, you're right.
I'll be ready for June.
Coming up next, Rod Woodson, Rams, Vikings tonight.
He says, cool it, cool it, big time on Baker Mayfield.
And the five guys in the NFL, you don't know.
talk about the five greatest NFL players that get next to no love from the fans.
One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app.
Search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like.
Thursday nights are about to get a lot bigger as Fox becomes the new network home for Thursday night for fall.
It's the Vikings and the undefeated Rams in a battle of NFC heavyweights.
Tonight at 7.30 Eastern on Fox, also live on NFL Network.
and streaming on Prime Video.
Now it's a game.
That's going to be a great game.
Really, the defense of the Vikings and the offense of the Rams,
actually these are two really deep rosters.
And with that, he played 17 years in the NFL, many notable years for the Pittsburgh
Steelers, Ravens, Raiders, 49ers as well.
He's a Hall of Famer, 1993 defensive player of the year in the NFL.
One of the all-time great players, Rod Woodson, joining us here on a Thursday in the Her.
You know, we were, you know, it's funny about.
I was saying stardom is hard to explain.
Kendall Jenner's a star.
She doesn't sing.
She doesn't act.
She didn't dance.
And she's a star.
And if she was in a Hollywood restaurant and Kendall Jenner was there and Tom Hanks,
more people would glom on to Kendall Jenner.
It's past my generation.
I don't get it.
Baker Mayfield feels like a star to me.
Sunday.
Now, tonight is the best game of the week.
To me, it's the best game of the week.
Sunday, Gruden, and Baker Mayfield.
That's the game I'm looking forward to.
I think Baker Mayfield, he's top 10 in Jersey sales.
He's never started.
His first start is going to be Sunday.
I can't wait to watch it.
Top 10 already.
I don't know how to.
He has a police video.
He was big in college.
He's cocky.
He's an underdog in Ohio.
Like you don't feel it.
You don't feel like, oh, I can't wait to watch this guy play.
You know, I think we like the underdogs.
We like to see the feel good stories.
And the Cleveland Browns as a whole, as an organization, is kind of a feel good story.
having had a winning season and how long haven't won the north and who knows when the last time they won a divisional title and you get this guy came in a week ago and he played a half of football and he played extremely well for him and they won the game their first game for a couple years so I get it I say pump the brakes you know but I do like him I think as a player he is a flashy guy he's not scared to throw the ball he makes plays with his feet
He's not scared to show his emotions.
And I think his offensive players like that.
They love that about him, that he's going to be that guy for him,
that he's going to go out there.
He's going to be gritty just like every other position is going to be gritty.
He's going to talk noise.
It's like every other position talks noise to each other.
But at the end of the day, he's going to be their commander-in-chief,
and he's going to lead them down the field and score points.
He faces Gruden.
Gruden has let go of Khalil Mack.
I think that heard him in the locker room.
There's a story last week.
A reporter in the NFL, I'm not sure which one.
on the internet said confirm report that he and Reggie McKenzie,
Gruden's got his own scout circle and that he doesn't really listen to McKenzie's scouts,
and that seems to me problematic.
I mean, again, if there's all that noise in the front office, does it leak down to players?
It shouldn't.
It can over time.
It can become a detriment over time.
But the players have to be, they've got to have earmuffs on for the fact that you can hear this noise.
but it can't affect us on game day.
Did you ever work for a team that was dysfunctional upstairs?
Not like that.
Not where you have two sides, where you have Gruton's guys.
The Steelers weren't.
The Steelers are not like that.
The Ravens were not like that.
What about the Niners when you were there?
The Niners were not like that because Eddie D was still there.
Okay, so they weren't dysfunction.
Boy, you work with gold standard.
I did.
I was very blessed on the teams.
And the Raiders weren't even dysfunctional when you were there.
When I was there, Mr.
Davis was there and he wouldn't allow the dysfunction. I mean, he made sure that his team was
going to be ran a certain way. It was his way or the highway. And we had a really good team
when I got there. We were a top 10 defense. We were, I mean, you think about our offense
in Jerry Rice and Tim McDonald. I mean, they, you know, they were older players, but they were
balling. Rich Gannon was just throwing the rock to everybody. So there was no nonsense. You didn't
deal with front office nonsense your entire career.
I have not.
17 years, no nonsense.
No.
Not when I played.
There's a lot of nonsense in the league now.
There's a lot of different.
Well, and also, athletes are empowered.
There's more politics.
That leads to arguments and divisiveness.
And, you know, it is what it is.
This is the new sports I live in.
LeBron wants to, you know, he's doing politics and business and athletes are more empowered.
And you've got to think in Cleveland alone, they're looking for something to grab on to.
Of course.
And Baker might be that guy.
And, you know, if he comes out to the West Coast,
and he wins his first game against the Oakland Raiders,
which I don't know if he will.
I mean, they might put the poster up on LeBron's wall.
Yes.
You know, two things.
Rams play the Vikings tonight.
Two topics on this.
Number one, people are saying Jared Goff,
quarterback for the Rams is a system guy,
to which I'm like, so.
Joe Montana was in the West Coast offense.
Look at your career.
If somebody would have said Rod Woodson,
you're a system player,
you would have said,
made part of it.
I think they go hand in hand a little bit, just with the fact, you want a B in a good system.
You know, when I first came into the league, Tony Dungy was our defense coordinator and our defense of back coach.
And we ran a lot of base coverages, you know, cover six, cover four, cover two, didn't do a whole bunch.
And then a guy named Rod Russ came in.
And Rod Russ, we ran this defense, kind of like a matchup zone man.
Yeah.
And it made you think a little bit more.
But that was my third year into it.
And then two years later, he leaves.
And this guy named Dick Lebo, Dom Cabers, and Bill Cowher come in.
So you had a bunch of system dudes.
And we were like, hey, we really like this system.
This system that we're playing in, that that fire zone that Dick LeBoe and Dom Cape is brought to us,
that we excelled.
And we were a little older, but it allowed us to bring our own uniqueness to the game inside of the system.
And if everybody thinks that different players are system guys,
and if everybody's talking about Jared Golf as a system quarterback, then I would just say this.
And I hate keep throwing this guy under the bus.
but bring in Peterman from the Buffalo Bills.
You bring him and have him your starting quarterback for the Rams
and see if he's a system guy.
You know, and I really hate throwing him under the bus
because I think Jared Gough is a player.
And I still have it in my head if he's going to be that piece
that take him to the Super Bowl because, you know, living in the Bay Area,
I saw him play against Utah and he threw five picks.
Yeah, and by the way, his first year in the NFL, he looked awful.
He looked terrible.
So there's some imagery out there that we can't get over yet.
Absolutely.
But I think he's that guy
Like Sean McVeigh, I think is a genius coordinator and head coach.
They have an outstanding defense.
Yeah.
You know, and Wade Phillips.
So I think if you can get Jared Gough to be that guy on a consistent basis,
you have all the playmakers out there.
Just distribute the ball to the guys.
They're going to be hard to beat.
Yeah.
So the other quarterback is Kirk Cousins tonight.
And you were saying throwing Peterman under the bus.
I'm throwing Jade Law under the bus.
Jade Law was in Jude Law, excuse me, Jude Law.
He was in Sherlock Holmes, but he wasn't Sherlock, he was Watson.
And he was in the Mr. Talented Mr. Ripley, but he wasn't the Ripley.
That was Matt Damon.
Is that Jude Law could get paid like a star.
And if you look at his movies, it looks like he's a star, but when he's the star,
the movie doesn't work, he has to be the two.
Kirk Cousins is paid like a star, and he's got some stats with the Vikings that make him look like a star.
but I watch Kirk Cousins
63-208
and I'm like
arm-sized athletic
he's not a star to me
I don't care what this
I don't care what his contract says
when you watch the game tonight
Goff will make a throw or two
and you're like okay that's a number one pick
and Kurt Cousins could win the game
but I don't he's 4 and 19
in his career against 500
quarterbacks, 500 teams are better
like when I say Kurt Cousins to you
and you watch him do you think star
I do not.
We played them last year when I was with the Raiders.
They did beat us, but just as throws he were making just normal throws.
You know, our dbs, they turn their heads.
They would have had four picks in that game.
You know, I've never seen him in a game where he had to win,
where he rose up and made throws like, hey, now that is a throw.
A camel do, a wensel do.
Like, to me, the thing about stars, Ed Reed, you were a star.
doesn't mean you're a star in every play.
But about twice a game, Ed Reed will do something.
And you're like, oh, okay, nobody can do that.
Earl Thomas does that.
Right. Gough made a throw last week down the sideline to Robert Woods.
Yes, on the left sideline.
Oh, that's the best throw I've seen in two weeks.
Over the linebacker.
Over the linebacker.
I'm between the corner right there.
And I'm like, okay, here's the throw I hear.
That is a star throw.
There's not a lot of guys in the world that make that throw.
That is outstanding throw.
That is a world-class throw.
I mean, you could literally not put it anywhere else.
That's not luck, that's talent, that they've been working on that.
That's not system.
That ain't system.
And Kirk Cousins, to me, he's getting paid like it.
And you keep showing me that I just don't see it.
I don't see it.
Now, they do need a running game.
That would take some of the pressure off of Kirk Cousin.
Yeah.
But he has playmakers at the receiving court.
Minnesota's got a ton of talent.
A nice tight-in.
And everything was pretty.
on the defense, defense, defense, all we need is a quarterback.
Well, your quarterback's played pretty good for you the last several years.
You bring him in, you guarantee him $90 million over three years,
and he has to be, it's this year they have to win the Super Bowl.
They brought him in for this year.
Yeah.
And if they don't win the Super Bowl this year, he's guaranteed two more years.
But, you know, you've got to think somewhere along the line he has to flash to be this great player.
I don't think he will because I think he is.
who he is who he is. I think we've seen his play with the Redskins, never seen any outstanding
play in the Redskins. Some solid games for him, yes. But never it. But that, yes, that one
throw, two plays. I don't have one. Getting out of the pocket, making a throw on the run where you
say, hey, you know what? Like an Aaron Rodgers. Patrick Mahomes has had four of those in three
weeks. Now, and you see the flashes of greatness in Patrick Mahomes. Oh, God, yes. Or Carson Wentz last
year. And in his time frame of being
in the league with Kirk Cousin, you haven't seen
that yet. By the way, Aaron Rogers
heard again, in your 17 years,
I've always had this theory,
John Lynch is a friend, runs the Niners.
I covered John Lynch in Tampa. He never
had a concussion.
That I'm not an overly religious guy,
but maybe it's DNA and not God.
But some man, your dad
or the man upstairs, gives you a body.
And you can only
do so much with what he gives you. Some kids
just get sick a lot, and some kids don't.
My son's never sick.
I mean, 12 years old, he never gets sick.
So never had an ear infection.
Never, like, some people are just more prone to it.
John Lynch never got hurt.
And he was crushing people for years.
Aaron Rogers is hurt again.
He's six, two.
He's not big.
And I look at your career, 17 years.
Did you get hurt much?
I've had some concussions.
I've had like a dislocated shoulder.
Were there guys?
when you played that just
didn't get hurt. Some guys,
and no athlete wants to be called injury prone.
Right. But if I give you the injuries for Aaron
and I'm not blaming him for it,
but he's been banged up a lot. Torn
calf, broken clavicle, broken clavicle, broken
foot, tore ACL in high school, concussions.
Did you ever play with a guy
that just didn't get hurt?
Not that I can think
of off top of my head that does not
have any injuries. Like somebody,
especially an elite player,
to not have any injuries. I think over time,
body just wears down.
Now, when you look at Aaron Rogers, though, when you get hit and you're getting dragged down by guys who are twice your size, it's going to happen.
Now, his offensive line has done mediocre job at times, protecting him.
Sometimes he's trying to make plays out of nothing, and he's holding on to the ball too long, and then he gets hit and then he gets hurt.
I don't think any of his injuries, though, will ever have an asterisk by his name just for the fact that his play, when he's done playing, he's going to have a go-jazzis.
and he's going to have a bus in Canton.
So we won't talk injuries.
We won't not talk injuries.
By the way, Kevin Durant, love him or hate him.
This is a side story.
I'm doing it.
I've been shocked today.
I love Katie.
Thank you.
Thank you.
He's a player.
Just because he chose to go to a different team.
Thank you.
LeBron went to Miami.
Exactly.
And LeBron was hated when he went to Miami.
So here's what's funny.
Every time you make a decision in life,
you can't expect everybody to enjoy that decision or agree with that decision.
So I, Kevin Durant came out and said, nobody likes me. They hate me. And I said, he's playing a victim. And Joy is like, no, nobody likes him. And John's like nobody likes him. I didn't say nobody likes him. I said there are people out there that don't like him. I'm not one of them. I think he'd made the right decision. So I did one of these dorky internet Twitter polls. First of all, we have 12,000 votes in 15 minutes. So people have strong opinions. It is 66% of people hate him and 34% of people.
love him. And by the way, I could have put
indecisive, man, no, I want to do love, hate. I want you to pick aside.
If you lean one way or the other, like him, don't like him, love, hate, like love.
Right now, 66% of the people.
I told you. I don't understand. Nothing in the world is right again.
The moon doesn't exist. I don't understand why you dislike him.
Why don't I love him? I'm just saying, not you. I'm just saying
in general where everybody else dislikes him. This is for the fact that he went to
his rival, so to speak,
and he teamed up with them to win.
He was to win.
By the way, when I left my company,
I could have gone to other networks.
The reason I chose Fox is,
because they had a bunch of good all-stars.
We had the NFL,
we had a bunch of Troy Aikman's and Joe Bucks,
and I was like, Howie Law and I'm like,
I want to go on that team.
I didn't choose a weaker team.
I wanted to go on a good team.
Well, the reality is if he had to carry a team on his own
and he didn't win, people would crush him for that.
and he goes to a team that is already winning,
they crush him for that.
The moral is don't try and please everybody
because you'll end up pleasing no one
and you'll be unhappy yourself,
which is exactly what's happening.
Who cares if people hate you?
Just keep winning championships, Katie.
Don't worry about it.
And I assure you 30 years from now,
we are not going to talk about how that one time
Katie left went to the 70s or nine years.
Well, he was mad because people didn't see him as a defender.
Well, that's how it started.
And I was saying he's being, because he said,
you know, people hate me.
And I'm like,
people don't hate you.
That's why I put up this dopey pole
and apparently people hate him.
And he is a good defender.
And he causes problems for people
when they're in their small lineup.
I think people forget he's seven foot.
People definitely forget that.
Yes.
He's in top ten in blocks.
He handles a basketball like he's a point guard.
Yes.
He's a big guy. He's a tall guy.
Joy Taylor with the news.
Thanks, Rod.
No, no, no.
Turn on the news.
This is the Herdline News.
It's a vortex of insanity that Twitter.
Good Lord.
So the Baker-Mayfield hype train continues to roll.
He has now risen to the top of the odds for a rookie of the year.
After having 20-to-1 odds last week, he is now the 3-2 favorites.
Wow.
According to Bet Online, Sequin Barclay.
He hasn't started a game.
Nope.
No.
Sequin Barclay, Sam Darnold are both 3-to-1 odds, Josh Allen, 10-1, and Calvin Ridley.
This is what Vegas is saying?
This is from Bet-Online.
Wow.
Yeah.
When you think of that?
I think he's a star.
I agree.
This is definitely a star factor thing.
But I do think that if Baker can, I mean, they're going, obviously they've won one more game than they did last year.
But if he can turn things around, even sitting in slightly for Cleveland.
RG3 won rookie of the year.
Andrew Luck was the better player.
Let's not get too crazy about this.
No, but it is a significant thing.
And RG3 deserved to win rookie of the year that year.
I mean, you look at RG3 now.
it's obviously a different situation, but
RG3 was great that year.
Yeah, yeah.
He was.
All right.
And now time for our fantasy headline
sponsored by Draft Kings.
We'll stick with the odds.
Vegas has also updated its odds
for NFL MVP.
And after historic start to the season,
Ryan Fitzpatrick,
no, I'm kidding.
Patrick Mahomes is now the favorite
to take home the hardware.
And this, I think, before the season,
one of the surprise people,
but now should not be super surprising.
He's three to one odds there at Denver this week on Monday night football.
What have I told you Monday night football is going to be the upset of the week?
Denver's going to beat the Chiefs.
I can get with that.
That's a tough game.
I'm telling you.
Denver's not an easy place to play.
No, and I think Denver's one of those teams.
They're not great, but you get them at home.
Denver's pretty in case Keenham doesn't make a ton of mistakes usually.
The only thing I would say is the Chiefs score a lot.
They do.
They do.
So can Denver outscore them?
Because that seems to be really the only way to beat them.
Drew Brees, Aaron Rogers, Tom Brady, Jared Gough, and Todd Gurley are also on the top of the odds to win the MVP award.
I would say if it's not Patrick Mohn's, my bet would be on Jared Gough this year.
Finally.
James Winston is returning from his three-game suspension due to violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.
He's also in jeopardy of losing his starting job.
So he's treading lightly
Would probably be the way that you want to approach
Your return to the team after being suspended
Yeah, especially for what he was suspended for
So let's watch his opening statement
During his first media appearance yesterday
Oh, okay
Hey guys, welcome back
Did you miss me?
Did you miss us?
Did you miss me?
That's now really what I would have said
I mean, look, I don't, I'm not trying to be
The like, get off my lawn guy, but
I don't think he's terribly mature
It's just come on
How do you not just stop him
Before he goes out there like look
Just
Just don't say
Anything even remotely controversial
He goes up with a big smile
Did you miss me?
Did you miss me?
Oh boy
Well you know what
He's a young man
Let's not be too judgmental
When when
Okay
Normally I'm with you on that
A hundred percent
He does
Okay
James Winston has had his opportunities
To prove to us
I would still
And he's not that young.
Yeah, I still think it's his team, though.
One more bad game out of Fitzpatrick.
I'm putting him in.
I've spent money on him.
I put the scouting in.
He was getting better.
I still think it's James Winston's team.
I mean, yeah, I mean, you have to figure this out.
It's like DAC.
I've got to figure out here in about six months if he's my guy.
If not, I'm not signing him to a long year.
See, it might as well.
It's like the Cowboys.
Okay, we took Des and Jason Whit.
off, here you are.
We want to, before we pay you for five years and get locked into you, Dach, show us what you are.
Yeah.
After the game that Fitzpatrick had last week, the clock is ticking on Fitzpatrick.
The next dud he has, he's out of there.
I agree.
But, I mean, he's shown an, an.
He just has no self-awareness.
He has no self-awareness.
He's got zero self-awareness.
That's fair.
That's been my knock on Carmelo Anthony.
He just doesn't understand.
He doesn't have any self-hold.
Well, I mean, yes, maybe.
But I feel like they're on different.
ends at the spectrum as far as what they need to be self-aware of.
Right. You're right. You're right. Joy Taylor with the news.
Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
The Hurd-Lie News.
Coming up next, I'm going to be forced to make an impossible decision, and I don't know if I can do it.
This will be fun. It's called Best for Last. This will be fun. Coming up.
Car shopping's confusing. A lot of terms, dealer price, list price.
Truecar shows what other people paid for the car you want, newer use. Truecar.com. Check out the true price.
true car. All right, time for best for last. After almost three hours, Colin apparently hasn't
gotten to the point yet. Quit holding out on us, cowherd. It's the best for last. The staff wants
to put me on the spot today, because I often put my staff on the spot. So they're going to ask me
questions, and I have to pick between the options they give me. So this may be a new game. It's called,
you know, the hardest decision. It's called the hardest decision. So they're going to
ask me, I don't have no idea what these sports questions are, but I have to pick the options
presented to me. Oh, like KD, love or hate. Yeah, because this started today because I don't
understand how people why there's so much hate for KD. He's the second best player in the world.
He's fascinating to watch. Best shooter maybe of all time. And so I told my audience, I'm going to
make you love him or hate him. I'm not going to give you a bunch of options. So the staff said,
we're not going to give you options.
Here's the hardest decision. Go ahead.
Okay, you're coaching the Bucks.
Who do you start at QB?
Ryan Fitzpatrick or James Winston?
Today?
Ryan Fitzpatrick, today.
What about Sunday?
With a very short leash if I get another bad game,
James Winston.
James Winston's last two years,
completion percentage up,
passerating up, he was on his way.
I don't think he's Carson Wentz.
I don't think he's Russell Wilson, but he was improving.
I'll give Fitzmagic.
That's not much of a magic show, by the way.
I'll give Fitzmagic one more start than James is my guy.
You have to bet your entire life savings on a rookie QB winning the Super Bowl this season.
Who you got Donald, Mayfield, Rosen, Jackson, or Allen.
Lamar Jackson.
Because Baltimore is the only team with a chance to get to the Super Bowl.
Oh, come on.
That's cheating.
And then if Flacko got hurt, Lamar would lead him to a,
ugly 14 to 13 win.
What is that not? That's a legitimate
answer. I'm just stunned you didn't say
Darnold, so I'll take it. Well, the Jets aren't, they don't
have any, you can't win a Super Bowl with that often.
Yeah, but that takes the fun out of it. I am not
about fun. I'm about data.
I would say Lamar Jackson
because Baltimore could get to a Super Bowl.
There could be an injury, and in a low
scoring, defensive-minded game, they could win close
with Lamar. It's very analytical of you.
Okay, you're starting a pee-wee
football team, and you can only
pick one of these coaches.
Nick Saban or Bill Belichick?
Sabin. Belichick's too academic.
The kids wouldn't understand him.
And Saban would come in and yell at the kids so they'd be scared,
but he'd put him in the right spot.
He'd keep it simple.
I mean, Alabama's not running the craziest schemes.
He recruits like crazy.
He's a great motivator.
He puts him in the right spot.
Belichick would be sitting down with these kids
breaking down game film with a nine-year-old,
and he'd start, you know, you'd be too confusing.
Sabin yells at Coke bottles.
What do you think he's going to do with a little kid?
Yeah, well, I know, but Saban, the college game is simpler than the NFL game because you only have 17 hours of practice.
So Saban has mastered, recruit like hell, and simplify it to get your best players aligned in the same direction.
He's, NFL's complicated.
Yeah, I got to agree with calling on this one.
I'm going to go to Saban.
You have to live in one sports city for the rest of your life.
Green Bay or Oklahoma City.
Whitlock tells me Oklahoma City is no good.
But if you're giving me Green Bay or Oklahoma City, Oklahoma City at least doesn't have as harsh a winters.
So Oklahoma City's supposed to have a nice brick district with a good restaurants, and they don't have, they don't get a ton of snow there, do they?
I've never been.
Does Oklahoma get a bunch of snow, do they?
They don't get any snow, do they? They get occasional scary twisters, but they don't get a lot of snow.
So I choose Oklahoma City.
You're not beloved there.
You know that, right?
Yeah, you need a pass to go there.
Well, I wouldn't need security system.
Simply save home security.
because I am hated there.
You have to start an NBA franchise.
Which player do you build around?
Oh, good Lord.
Russell Westbrook or Lonzo Ball.
Nice transition there.
Okay, ask it again.
You have to start an NBA franchise.
Which player do you build around?
Russell Westbrook or Lonzo Ball?
Lonzo Ball.
I agree.
Because Lonzo Ball passes and Stars want to play
with Ben Simmons and Lonzo because they get the ball.
Stars look at Westbrook and thing.
I ain't get many shots.
if you told me today, by the way, Westbrook's way better than Lonzo ball, but in the NBA,
you want to get shots.
Lonzo's getting me shots.
If you seen the Lakers stats when he plays and when he doesn't, everybody's field goal percentage
goes up.
Steve Nash is one of the own, Steve Nash and Steph are rare.
They get their points and you get yours.
So you think I'm crazy on it.
This is why I can't move to Oklahoma City.
I'm going to say you better change that to see.
I like Russell Westbrook a lot, but I think we already have an example of this.
They have built their organization.
around Russell Westbro.
And what are they got?
And we don't know what's going to happen with Lonzo.
But Lonzo has been there for one year, and now LeBron is there and they're much closer to a championship.
There you go.
This is going to be a tough one for the hardest decision.
Go ahead.
You can only talk about one athlete for the rest of your life.
Tom Brady or LeBron James.
Easy.
LeBron.
Yeah.
Of course.
Well, I mean, Brady's hold up in his house watching game film.
Now, I will say this.
I talk, my shows, I've broken it down.
My show's about 65% NFL.
And my show's about 25% to 30% NBA.
So that means I'd have, well, I can still talk NFL.
I just couldn't talk.
So you tell me this is the only topic I get.
The only athlete.
Yes.
This is the only athlete I can talk about.
Well, then I'd have to choose Brady because I talk 60 to 70% football.
No, no, no.
You can't only talk about one.
the athlete. No other athletes.
So I get every day when I come into here.
You get to talk about one topic
for the rest of your life. First of all, it's going to get a little stale.
First of all, I would last about a month
and I just resign and I'd say, okay,
Wiley and Whitlock, you can do my show.
You don't get to do all those things. This is your
life. This is how the game is played.
I don't like this game. Do I get a third
player? I can't talk anybody
but LeBron. LeBron or Brady for the rest
of your life. I would retire.
I talk it. As it is, I
talk a ton about him. All right, you got two more.
Two more.
You get to pick which superstar wins one more championship.
LeBron win another NBA title or Tiger wins another major.
LeBron.
Oh, I don't know after last weekend.
Oh.
LeBron won more.
Because LeBron's going to play for seven more.
He may be the second best player on a team at some.
But what if Anthony Davis comes over?
I'd say LeBron.
I think Tiger won a nice tournament.
win in a major when all the best golfers are there,
I don't know if Tiger can do that.
Nah, I don't know.
That's the best question you've asked.
It's not which will happen.
You get to pick.
What do you want to happen?
Oh, what do I want to happen?
You are sports God.
You get to decide.
Oh, what I want to happen.
God, to see Tiger win the Masters,
I probably would say if it's up to me to Tiger
to win the U.S. Open,
if he played Pebble Beach,
Tiger won a U.S. Open.
that could want to be one of the great days
the rest of my life in sports.
I appreciate you picking an event that will be on Fox.
By the way, if that happened, Whitlock would curl up into a ball and cry.
He would be so happy.
He's the only guy I know on Sunday that was watching golf.
Last one.
That's under 80 years old.
You have to live next door to one athlete.
Connor McGregor or Rob Gruncowski.
Grunk.
Connor McGregor is getting in fistfights with buses.
Do you know how many Bud, like cans would be a lot of?
in your yard if you did that? This is it. This is
easily gronk. Yeah, I mean,
gronk's a goofball, but you know what?
I've lived next to goofballs. Conor
McGregor's throwing things at buses.
He's dangerous.
I'm not living next to Connor McGregor. I've lived
next to a lot of goofballs.
And a lot of goofballs
have lived next to me.
All right, that was called the Hurtest decision.
That was fine work.
Tomorrow we're loaded.
