This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise,

Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? Starting point is 00:01:42 where doping is not only legal but encouraged it's the enhanced games some call it grotesque others say it's unleashing human potential either way the podcast's superhuman documented it all embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:02:43 We're on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. We have a loaded show today, absolutely packed show today, one hour from now. off a winning week, Blazing five, like last year, almost 70% of the time. We had a winning week last year. We're off to another winning week. Love my picks this week.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Take some favorites this week. I don't do that much. Joy Taylor is joining me, Joy. How are you? I'm great. Good morning. By the way, Joy says by the Ernestine book about Skip Bayless, about skipping their relationship.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Balls, how to keep your relationship alive when you live with a sports-obsessed guy. I'm halfway through it. It's supposed to be a riot. It's great. It's a great read. And if you want to get to know, Skip Bayless more, too, you should read it. And she's very funny herself. She's amazing.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Let's start with this. If I just asked you, traits, I don't care what guys are drafted. I don't care about TV. If I said, what matters for quarterbacks? Winning, productivity, consistency, leadership, health, focus. Do you really love football? You get this morning that Dak Prescott, who you don't want to pay, is better than Cam Newton in all of those. Winning, DAC has won nine of his last 11 starts.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Cam's lost eight straight starts. Leadership, health, ascending, focus. Folks, Tampa Bay didn't have a pro bowler on defense last night. Carolina was at home. They had to win. Cam, O for three in the red zone. Abysmal on third down, three for 14. 24 of 50.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Couldn't extend drives. Carolina's defense is shot by the fourth quarter. You don't want to pay Dak Prescott. And you keep telling me Cam's a star. Today, Dak is better than Cam. Well, called that is unfair. Dak has amazing weapons. All right, let's talk about it.
Starting point is 00:04:51 Zeke. Well, Cam's got Christian McCaffrey. You don't think he can play? Well, I mean, Jason Witten. Well, Cam's got Greg Olson. He's better right now than 88-year-old Jason Witten. Well, what about Amari Cooper? What about Curtis Samuel?
Starting point is 00:05:07 That guy's got game. Well, what about Michael Gallup, the emergent? Well, what about DJ Moore? Stop. Dak and Cam both have enough weapons. A back, two good receivers, a good tight end. And both have clearly have competent coaches. Ron Revere's gotten to a Super Bowl, won his division.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Jason Garrett's won playoff games, won his division. Stop with the nonsense. All you need to know, teams tell you what they think about your quarterback. On the biggest plays of the game, the biggest play of the season for the Carolina Panthers, and watch who they hike the ball to. Direct snap. They fake the toss. McCaffrey, depends where they put it.
Starting point is 00:05:54 What a play by Hargraves out on the edge, and he did not get it. Tampa Bay is going to win this game with that defensive stop. Cam has another touchdown pass in four games. Okay, running quarterbacks, Cam, they work in this league. But as we often say, they don't last. So what you have to do if you're running quarterback, run around for a couple years, until the light goes on. It's a very fast NFL game compared to college.
Starting point is 00:06:22 And then Russell Wilson, Steve. Eve Young did this to a Hall of Fame level. About year three, the light goes on, and then you can run occasionally, but you are really a pocket quarterback with mobility. By the way, I'm finding Dak Prescott is running less and passing more. But if you're a running quarterback, it all works. It just doesn't last. Do it for a couple years.
Starting point is 00:06:43 The problem with Cam, Cam has never taken the time to become a pocket quarterback. Cam is too distracted from day one in this league. He's distracted being Cam. He's distracted being cool. He's distracted with his commercials. He's distracted with his fashion. He is never committed to being a great pocket quarterback. I have seen more growth from Lamar Jackson in the last six months that I've seen from
Starting point is 00:07:07 Cam in eight years. So this morning when you question should you pay DAC, DAC is an ascending, winning, increasingly productive, coachable leader at quarterback. Cam is an eroding, marginally productive, arguably uncoachable, semi-healthy, non-winning, depends on the Sunday or moment productive quarterback. And you want Cam over DAC, and you don't want to pay DAC. So, I mean, if you don't want to pay DAC, what are you going to pay Cam?
Starting point is 00:07:45 Because I've been listening to this DAC thing for a year. those two staffs last night did not trust their quarterbacks. Tampa Bay wants to run the ball and they don't want to hike the ball to Cam in a big spot. I watch Dallas. Every year, DAC attempts up. Productivity, up.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Winning, up. Trust. Up. I mean, Superman's over. When Superman can't reach over the goal line and get a yard, they won't hike him to it. It's over. Cape off. By the way, if you want to be,
Starting point is 00:08:18 here, Cam after the game. I will say this. He is the most elegantly dressed quarterback. Let's go with ever. Through my lens, you know, it's hard to look defensive guys in their eyes after a game like this, you know what I'm saying? Because, you know, offensively, we don't hold up by end of the bargain. I have to be better. No matter what physical condition I'm in, no matter what foot, shoulder, I ain't get the job done tonight, man, and it's frustrating. I wish I could say something Other than that, it's time for me to look myself in the mirror and, you know, do some real soul searching because I had opportunities tonight and I didn't get it down. Well, his fashion, I will say this, and I'm not a fashion guru.
Starting point is 00:08:59 His fashion gets better. His fashion's gotten cooler. The winning, less, fashion, better. That I won't argue. All right, let's shift to this. This is the way it works in the NFL. Everybody gets their schedule. Coaches, players, a couple circle games there.
Starting point is 00:09:17 You know, oh, I'm facing my ex. I'm facing the guy who fired me. Belichick, you know, he loves to face the Jets. He loves to face the Browns. Browns fired him. Ah, he loves to stick it to the Browns. And the Jets offered him the job he wasn't interested. He loves to beat the Jets.
Starting point is 00:09:36 You know, everybody's got a guy and X. So, B.J. grabbed his schedule this year. And that first game, he circled back in New York, Sunday night football. I'm going to have a little homecoming and light those crappy Jets defensive backs up. So yesterday, unprovoked, nobody brought up Greg Williams. He took a shot at the current former Brown's interim coach, current Jets defensive coordinator. If I was a coach, I would never teach what he teaches, but that's just him and what he does.
Starting point is 00:10:09 So there's no real getting under my skin anymore. I had people who were here when he was here telling us, You know, if you get a chance, take a shot at him. If you can, you know, hurt him. I guarantee he's going to leave the game hurt. Probably just got to watch out for the cheap shots and the dirty hits and all the things that he likes to teach. That was not random.
Starting point is 00:10:30 Either was saying I'm going to wear the watch again. Now let me start by saying I'm not a Greg Williams fan. I think he's loud. There's a lot of ego. There's a reason 16 years in the NFL. Nobody's giving him a head job. God, he did a great job for Cleveland last year. They didn't give him the head job.
Starting point is 00:10:45 I think he sometimes can be a little outdated. I don't like his loud coaching style. Not a huge fan. Clearly, he's capable of coaching, but he's not my cup of tea. So some of the claims he goes out to hurt people, you know, it wouldn't shock me. Number two, though, OBJ has got a plan. This was a circle game. Back in New York, I'm on stage.
Starting point is 00:11:05 I'm going to be a star. And I will tell you, this is going to work for OBJ, I think, this week. I think OBJ is going to go to New York and he's going to get nine or ten catches and he's going to have a couple of touchdowns. because frankly, the Jets secondary is a mess. Sam Darnold's got mono, meaning they'll use Trevor Simeon, meaning the Jets will have a lot of three and outs and five and six play series. They'll give it back to Baker Mayfield.
Starting point is 00:11:27 Baker will be on a stage, but this was a plan. I'm going to wear the watch again was a plan. Greg Williams, I don't believe in what he teaches, is a plan. OBJ knows what he's doing here. And I think in this instance, for OBJ, it will work. I think it's a great stage. I think Cleveland's going to win. If I was a gambler, I don't think it's a great bet because I don't know who's playing for the Jets.
Starting point is 00:11:50 They got multiple guys sick and hurt. And I mean, Cleveland's offensive line is not good. And the Jets D line is their strength. But I think this is all a plan. The watch is a plan. That was for the stage Monday Night Football. That was a circle game. I'm going to show the world.
Starting point is 00:12:04 You're going to laugh at me for going to Cleveland? I'll show you. And by the way, I get it. We all want to show our X. We upgraded. I get it. Don't get me wrong. I've probably done it in my life.
Starting point is 00:12:14 A lot of people have done it. But I think this was coordinated. I think OBJ looked at that schedule and thought, New York Jets, Monday Night Football, I'm lighting him up. And this time, I think he will. I don't play fantasy football, but I think he will have a very good game on Monday night.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Last night, a blown call changed the game. Starting point is 00:13:36 And in recognition of mental health awareness month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking. Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing.
Starting point is 00:13:56 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth? Are you a good person because you're afraid?
Starting point is 00:14:11 Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Keer Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Open your free, Our Heart Radio app. Search Learn the Hardway and listen now. Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashed. reaching human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Listen to Superhuman on the IHard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. Like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me. He goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Come on out.
Starting point is 00:15:22 Quarterback on office blue of 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clifford show on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. I think the ultimate sign of respect is when I have to adjust to you as a rival. In the NFL, everybody adjusts to Belichick.
Starting point is 00:15:51 Belichick adjusts to one person. I want you to think about this. So Antonio Brown's going to play for New England this week. And a lot of you are asking, why would they get Antonio Brown? They don't need him. I mean, this is a really nice receiving corps. The jets are a mess. Miami's, you know, Buffalo.
Starting point is 00:16:10 What's the point? Why the disruption? Belichick is reacting to Andy Reed. So I want you to think about this. What are the obstacles for New England to get to the Super Bowl? Don't worry about the NFC. Belichick will have two weeks to figure out the NFC team. I think we all look at Houston.
Starting point is 00:16:29 Belichick owns him. Pittsburgh. Belichick owns them. Chargers. Belichick owns them. Philip Rivers is like 0 and 11 against Tom Brady. The two quarterbacks, coaches, GMs that Belichick saw as his biggest obstacles. Indianapolis, Chris Ballard, and Andrew Luck, Andrew retired. Belichick sees
Starting point is 00:16:50 one obstacle to get to the Super Bowl, and it's a guy that's given him fits, Andy Reed. Andy Reed's last five games, regardless of quarterback against Bill Belichick, are unbelievable. 35 points a game, 420 yards, 50 percent third down, 115 quarterback ready. Nobody does that against Belichick, ever. Andy Reid does it every time. In fact, the last, not only does Andy do it, his disciples do it against Belichick. Matt Nagy with Trubisky dropped 31 on Belichick last year. Mitch Trubisky. Doug Peterson, Andy Reed, Disciples Super Bowl, beat Belichick with Nick Foles. He could not stop Nick Foles. Andy Reid in the Super Bowl in Philadelphia. Remember that? Donovan McNabb had 360 yards.
Starting point is 00:17:42 Brian Westbrook had 100 yards. They were nine for 16 on third down. And on a broken leg, Tio had nine catches. Andy Reed is the kryptonite. He can't stop Andy Reid. The two games, and now Belichick sees Patrick Mahomes with Andy Reed. He's like, yeah, yeah. Last two times they played Kansas City, they give it up 40 points and 31.
Starting point is 00:18:06 And this is with this great New England defense the last couple years. And in both games, Gronk was huge. Gronk's not here. This is the ultimate respect to Andy Reid. I can't stop him. I couldn't stop him with Alex Smith. I can't stop him. I can't stop Doug Peterson.
Starting point is 00:18:22 I couldn't stop Matt Nagy and Mitch Trubisky. This is the one obstacle. And at this point for Belichick, it's like the Yankees. They're not playing for wild cards. The Yankees are playing to win the World Series. Okay, that's all they're playing for. LeBron at this point, it's about winning titles. I didn't give a rip about getting into the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Balochick at this point, it's just about getting to the Super Bowl. And then you roll the dice, take your chances on your health, and who do you play two weeks to prepare? But I think this is a shout out to Andy Reid. It's like, hell, I can't stop this guy. And in fact, I'd say there's been a couple of times, a couple years ago. They embarrassed New England. And so I think this AB is, listen, this is our last obstacle. I clearly can't stop Andy Reid.
Starting point is 00:19:05 And with Patrick Mahomes, I'm not taking my chances. You've got to give me another weapon. I'm going to be in a shootout. And I don't think Belichick thinks that with Pittsburgh. I think he thinks he can stop Big Ben. He can stop Watson. He can stop Philip Rivers. I don't think he can stop Andy Reid.
Starting point is 00:19:19 I don't think he can stop his disciples, his system, his creativity. And he's not stopping him now with Patrick Mahomes. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. Weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Albert Brear, NFL reporter, lead content guy, MMQB, joining us via the Coward Global Satellite Network. All right, let's start, Albert, with Antonio Brown. Yep.
Starting point is 00:19:42 Gonna play how much only, I think he practiced twice. What do you make of what he'll do against the dolphins in Miami? Well, Colin, generally, if Belichick puts a guy out there on Wednesday and Thursday, he's going to be part of the game plan. And so my guess would be that they would probably pace him a little bit. He's in shape. He was in a training camp, of course. albeit limited in a training camp.
Starting point is 00:20:05 He wasn't the Raiders training camp during August. So he is in football shape and ready to go. And generally the way this works is they'll give him a little bit of the playbook, then a little bit more, than a little bit more. And so I would think that they would probably have some game plan stuff in to get his feet, let's start to build chemistry with Brady. But I don't think he's going to be a full-time player quite yet. I want to talk about Sam Darnold's got Mono.
Starting point is 00:20:29 It looks like Labian Bell is fine. but Bono is probably minimum out for two weeks. I don't think they beat Cleveland on Monday night, although I do think Trevor Simeon is one of the top four or five backups in the league. Tanny Hill's probably the best backup. Are we looking at a situation here where the Jets season could come unglued by Monday night at 11 p.m. Eastern 0.2? There's no question about it, Colin. I mean, it's not just about the injuries.
Starting point is 00:20:56 It's about what's ahead on the schedule. If you look at it, they lose on Monday night. They're 0.2. in their next four games, they've got two against the Patriots, they've got the Cowboys, and they've got the Eagles. It's just hard to find a win right now. I mean, they could legitimately be eliminated from the AFCs halfway through the season based on where the Patriots are and based on where they are. So there's going to be a challenge for Adam Gase. I'm not having his quarterback. Things going sideways the way they did blowing a double-digit lead to Buffalo last week,
Starting point is 00:21:25 and then losing it home on Monday night, coming out of that and seeing what they have ahead. I certainly think that you know you look at where the jets are just developmentally right now where the roster is and everything else. There are big time challenges for Adam Gase and keeping this team together based on what's ahead. Albert Breer joining us, former Patriot and Cowboy Beat Rider. I want to talk about Cam Newton last night. Listen. Yep. I mean, that was not a good look. Biggest play of the game, they hiked it to McCaffrey.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Accuracy issues are not even, they're not debatable anymore. He has lost eight straight starts, no touchdown passes. And I think they actually have some nice wide receiver. I think DJ Moore. What do you make of Cam right now? That new owner does not care about his MVP season. Okay, he doesn't care. What's the future of Cam?
Starting point is 00:22:12 What do you? What's the comp here? I mean, I think lots of people's jobs are on the line now in Carolina. I mean, it is new ownership, so we don't know what David Tepper is going to do after the year. So there are going to be a lot of people who are going to be fighting for their jobs there. Of course, Cam Newton, 2020 is a contract. year for him and they didn't redo his contract this offseason. So, I mean, I think it's fair to ask questions about everybody's future there. As for Camp specifically, one thing I can tell you,
Starting point is 00:22:38 you know, the coaches looked at coming out of last night, they need to be more consistently accurate. And that really is the issue. There were throws he made last night where you said, okay, like there's progress there. It's just the consistency has been an issue his whole career. The consistency is still an issue. Like you said, they've got some skill position talent around him now and McCaffrey, Curtis Samuel, DJ Moore. And so, you know, I think what you're looking for specifically right now and what the coaches are looking for specifically is consistency of accuracy. One thing I would mention, we were asking the same questions about Andrew Luck
Starting point is 00:23:11 the first month of last season, right? And Andrew Luck went through an almost identical process as Cam Newton coming back. Their injuries aren't identical, but they went through an identical process. And they both had shoulder surgery. They both decided, okay, this is the time when I want to rework my delivery. both went to work with Tom House. And if you remember, there were lots of questions about Andrew Luck, the first four to six weeks of last season. And then because he had gotten the reps with the reworked delivery, he really started to turn a corner in October. And so I'm not going to
Starting point is 00:23:40 sugarcoat it. Not good signs to the first two weeks for Cam Newton. I would just say we should take some patience with Cam here. Maybe wait till mid to late October, see some of the, see of some the changes that he made in the offseason take. Dak Prescott was absolutely amazing. I had Greg Cocell on, my kind of film analyst, I use a lot. And he came out and he was blunt. He goes, I don't know what to make of it. He goes, he goes, you know, giant defenders, we're not close on a dozen throws. Pat Schumer's a good coordinator. Maybe he's not a good coach. What was the talk with your sources around the league on DAC? I mean, listen, Randall, Randall Cobb's good. Michael Gallup's better. O-line is healthy. I think Dallas just has better weapons than we realize.
Starting point is 00:24:24 What did you make of it? It's not just that. I mean, I, I mean, I would say there was a lot of talk about Dag Prescott, but there was an equal amount of talk about Kellyn Moore, the new offensive coordinator there. And if you've been talking to Cowboys people over the last two or three months, there's been this quiet confidence about what Kellynne Moore is going to bring to the offense and how innovative he's been. Now, he's an internal promotion, of course.
Starting point is 00:24:44 He was the quarterback's coach there last year. He was actually the backup quarterback to Prescott two years ago. But he's brought a lot of new scheme stuff to that offense. It's very specific to what Dak does well. He has a spread offense background. He played for Chris Peterson at Boise State. And so I think really what this offseason has been about for the Cowboys, getting Kellan Moore in place and building an offense that works for Dak Prescott. One thing that was pointed out to me that's really interesting about the way they're doing it now, three of Dak Prescott's four touchdown passes came off of play action and we're either on first or second down. It sort of illustrates how Kellan Moore is marrying the run game to the past game and how that really reflects what Dak Press.
Starting point is 00:25:26 Scott's always done well going back to Mississippi State. So I think this is as much about a rising young coach and Kellan Moore, who the Cowboys have a ton of confidence in and what that might mean for Dag Prescott going forward. Fascinating game, Kyler Murray and Lamar Jackson. Lamar was stupendous last week. But again, it's Miami. Whatevs. Kyler Murray was very good late in that tempo offense when Detroit looked a little gas.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Yeah. Going to be a very interesting matchup. What are people saying about Kyler? Do you take the first three quarters or the last quarter? What do you make of it? Yeah. I mean, having talked to some people in the Cardinal building on Sunday night and Monday, one of the things they really liked is exactly what you saw,
Starting point is 00:26:08 which was a lot of things went wrong for him. A lot of things went wrong for the offense. I think there was an adjustment for Cliff, to be honest with you, and calling an NFL game the first couple of quarters. And what they really liked and what they saw from Kyler was just how he kept his head about him. That was the most important thing was where a lot of, where a lot of other rookies, things go haywire on you like that. Maybe you just figure it's not your afternoon. Kyler just kept swinging.
Starting point is 00:26:33 At the end of the game, I think you saw him making real NFL throws, which is very, very encouraging. In fact, one thing that I think impressed everyone in the Cardinal building was, you know, when he's under the gun, the pressure's on to make that throw in overtime to Larry Fitzgerald on that corner route. I mean, just spectacular. And I think it really illustrated to people what they've seen in Kyler over the course of the last five months, which is that nothing seems to be too big for him. Good stuff. Albert Breer, Patriots Cowboys in his rearview mirror as a beat reporter. Now he's the lead content guy, the Monday morning quarterback. Albert, we love having you on.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Thanks, bud. All right. Thanks, Colin. What's up, everybody? John Middlecock, Three and Out podcast. That's my show. Go subscribe. I talk football, football, and more football.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Coming up on today's show, I ask. and answer a lot of questions. Is Cam Newton washed? Wideville Belichick go sign Antonio Brown. Is Lamar Jackson really this good? And my favorite one. Is Chip Kelly really a fraud? John Middlecop, that's me.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Three and Out podcast. Go subscribe. So, Dak Prescott was amazing for the Cowboys last week. We had Greg Coe sell on. He's kind of my NFL film guy. I bring him on last five, six years. And he just cuts to the chase. He doesn't, you know, he's not rooting against her for anybody.
Starting point is 00:27:48 He'll just tell you what the film says. And I said, man, That was amazing against the Giants, right? And here's what Greg said. It was so bad. I really don't know what to set in receivers. He made a couple of really good throws, but I don't know what to say, Colin, beyond that.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Because I've been watching tape since 1991. I've seen an awful lot. You know, now with social media, you get a lot of young kids who are 28, 29, who are writing, and they see things, and they go, oh, my God, I've never seen that before. And then I watch their Twitter feed. I go, I've been seeing this for 30 years.
Starting point is 00:28:23 So I don't know what to say in response to quarterback hitting wide open receivers. So he just had a perfect passer rating, and our film guy's like, but here's where DAC is special. And numbers do occasionally lie. Who do you play? What's the coordinator? There are a handful of jobs in America, Kentucky basketball coach, Notre Dame
Starting point is 00:28:49 football coach, best Yankee, best Laker, and Dallas Cowboy quarterback. It's noisier, it's harder, there's more coverage. DeAngelo Russell was the best Laker player for a year. He couldn't handle it. He couldn't handle it. Last year, I thought LeBron was distracted. Kobe could handle it. Magic could handle it.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Kareem could handle it. By the way, Derek, Jeter, and Aaron Judge, perfect. A-Rod, not always well done. It's hard to be the Kentucky basketball coach. It's hard to be the best Laker Yankee. It's hard to be Notre Dame's football coach. Brian Kelly, all he does is win. He still gets crap.
Starting point is 00:29:29 And it's really hard to be the cowboy quarterback. And Dak off the best game of his career statistically. Here's where he always gets a perfect rating with the mic in front of him. You move forward. Simple as that. You move forward. You get back to what you know, get back to the work in the dirt, as they say. You can't sit back and hang your hat on something like that or hang your hat on one game.
Starting point is 00:29:55 It was a good performance for us to go out there and do that in the passing game. And just obviously win that game the way we did. But it's about turning the page. And I definitely save myself and this team's done that. Great. No, he used good. We, he used us. Talk about it.
Starting point is 00:30:11 Turn the page. Four quarterbacks in my life have aced the job as cowboy quarterback. Roger Staubach served in the Navy. Romo and Aikman, both great broadcasters, verbal guys, and Dak so far has aced it. It's just different being Kentucky's basketball coach. It's just different. It's just different being the best Yankee or the best Laker. It's different being Notre Dame's coach.
Starting point is 00:30:36 You've got to do more than win. I mean, they didn't like the way Brian Kelly looked on the sideline. I mean, every other place is like, oh, we won 11 games. Great. He looks like he's yelling at people. You know, he's not Notre Dame. We had the Regions talk to him. Things are not going.
Starting point is 00:30:50 It's tougher. And I think Dak just, he just hits it out of the park. He just gets it. There's a lot of chaos and a lot of noise and a talkative owner and just judicial issues, other players. Just, he's great at it. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHard Radio app.
Starting point is 00:31:09 Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth.

I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines, as we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the enhanced games. Some call it grotesque. Others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast's Superhuman documented it all.
Starting point is 00:33:19 embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year. Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth. Listen to Superhuman on the I-Hard Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's up, guys? This is Clivert Taylor the 4th. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff,
Starting point is 00:33:42 like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up, to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out. Quarterback on office blue of 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her.
Starting point is 00:34:00 What? Hey, Ms. Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. All right, Urban Myers here, Big Noon kickoff. Okay, my whole life, it feels like LSU's got the best players, even better than Alabama. They can't pass. That passing's always an issue. And I watched them last week, and I'm like, you can talk about Clemson and Alabama. I wouldn't want anything to do. This Joe Burrow kid, it's like LSU's a different program. Oh, my Lord. They look better than Clemson's looked this year.
Starting point is 00:34:39 Tell me about Joe Burrell. Did you know your connections to him? Well, first, LSU when I was in the SEC, every time we played them, I remember they'd come out of the tunnel and you'd look and say, how are we going to block these guys. That's the best looking team. We're one of the best looking teams. Joe Burrow, we recruited in Ohio State. He's from Athens, Ohio. His father is a long time defensive coach, was Frank Solich's defense coordinator forever. Great family, incredible kid, tough as nails. He's developed into a pro prospect, and I've talked to him quite often and couldn't be more proud of what Joe's done. How do you get out of Ohio? Well, he played for us for three years.
Starting point is 00:35:15 And then he moves on? He did a grad transfer. Dwayne Haskins and Joe had the battle. what was it two years ago in spring and it was I mean it was inches from who was our starting quarterback and Dwayne won the battle Joe left as a graduate transfer and play obviously starting a second year now I mean he's really he's the real deal
Starting point is 00:35:34 yeah he's really what he's done so well is getting the ball out and like you said the LSU offense is different now they're opening it up you know it used to be kind of a downhill which is great when they had those big backs and all that but they're going to score a ton of point you did that against Texas through for 4-71.
Starting point is 00:35:51 That's incredible. Unbelievable. So listen, I'm going to make you uncomfortable here, and this is my job. So I defended a hardball the whole time. I think it's a great coach. But now, if you're a quarterback, you've got to get the quarterback right. So I've defended him for years. I'm watching Shea Patterson.
Starting point is 00:36:07 I watch Shea Patterson at a high school camp. Okay, the line's better, the receivers are better. That offense, it ain't getting better. And Shea Patterson's always reminded me, there's a little Johnny Mansell, It's a little loose for my taste, a little small for my taste, but he's got talent. Coach, what's wrong with Michigan's offense? Now, it's like four years now. We said this in the preseason that when you change offenses, and from my understanding, when I watch them, it's a drastic change.
Starting point is 00:36:34 It takes a minute to get going. Yeah, it's been very disappointing. And Shea Patterson, the one fumble was inexcusable. However, the other one was a responsibility of the tailback. He was stripped from behind. Don't give up on this offense. If Donovan People Jones gets back, that's a. another big time weapon, but they got to start doing what they said they're going to do.
Starting point is 00:36:52 That's playing space, and they're not doing that yet. They're not doing that. You know, I mean, sometimes, you know, I think of you as sort of a CEO, but your offenses were clever. You gave your quarterbacks a lot of responsibility. You know, Jim, even at Stanford, San Francisco, he likes power football. Is it possible that Jim is kind of a conservative guy a little bit? is is and with that tight he's a little tight that can rub off on coaches do you feel like the gym needs to lighten up the offense loosen up a little bit be a little more creative
Starting point is 00:37:25 yeah i don't know it's i don't know it's him you know i don't uh obviously it's his program and then the way the game unfolded last week it was a bunch of runs right in a row and uh you know i was waiting for him once again you're talking about a complete talent mismatch in the perimeter and i kept waiting i think like a lot of the fans i get the ball out there let these athletes go against an Army athlete in the back end. And, I mean, it's just obvious that Army doesn't have the same athletes that they have. So, yeah, it was, it got very conservative. I think that, you know, I heard comments about wanting to bleed the clock, et cetera.
Starting point is 00:37:57 But, you know, if they want to play athletes in space, they got to start doing that because they do have the athletes. Oh, no, no, Michigan's, these are the best receivers I think he's had. Yeah. And it does, by the way. It takes three and four and five years to get the baby rolling most of the time. All right. I want to talk. So a lot of people said coming into the season,
Starting point is 00:38:13 Lynn Swan just resigned USC's AD. Clay Hilton could be in trouble. And then they make a change at coordinator, and they get an air raid guy, which is not USC's history, like Tailback You. And then they sign a bunch of quarterbacks. They got about nine, I swear to God, in camp. And this three-star small school kid named Keedonslovis, freshman, I mean, he literally walks on.
Starting point is 00:38:39 The starter gets hurt. They throw him in. coach, his poise is incredible. He had to ask the coaches during camp if he could go to his high school prom. He's like a kid. He's like 18 years old. How do you explain him? What do you see when you watch him?
Starting point is 00:38:56 I see what you saw. I saw poise. And once again, it's not some preseason game. That's a Pac-12 game against a very good Stanford team and a guy that was extremely accurate and started dropping dimes all over the place. And I think a lot, the country myself included, really didn't know much about him. but you'll certainly hear a lot about him. He's got a little bit of mobility.
Starting point is 00:39:15 What would you tell a quarterback? You're at the Coliseum. You're starting. He just, you know, when I first saw Dak Prescott in the NFL, Mississippi State Kid goes the NFL. He had a preseason game in Los Angeles, and Dak was so poised. And I'm like, I don't like his throwing motion.
Starting point is 00:39:29 I don't love Dak. He reminded me, actually, of a better T-bo in terms of NFL potential. And I watched this kid, and I'm like, I can't imagine how nervous I would be or my kid would be in front of 80,000 people. Have you ever had players like that, coach? that, and is it a quality you look for, is that they're just never nervous? I think that's rare to find.
Starting point is 00:39:50 Dwayne Haskins is the guy that was very nervous until his junior year. And then finally, he became that way. He was one of those guys that just would go out there and perform with, you know, just no issues whatsoever. So I think that especially the thing that everybody's got to remember, he's a true freshman. Yeah, 18 years old. I've never had a true freshman, you know. Not a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:40:09 I had a Percy Harvin as a true freshman that just went. played right now. But a true freshman, I don't think I've ever had one that just no, no nerves, especially in a big crowd in the Pac-12 game. I thought that was incredible. You know, I said this. We largely acknowledge as a country who the good coaches are. Okay, Nick Saban wins and Belichick and Urban Meyer and Bill Parcells.
Starting point is 00:40:30 And, you know, we know the guys who can coach. But there is something to be said about likability. Brian Kelly's gruff and his face explodes and he's got the cold weather and he's yelled and screaming. And I think a lot of people look at Brian Kelly and they're like, well, and I think to myself, private school, cold weather, kind of isolated, not really in a conference. You know, it's a religious, academically tough. And he's knocking out 10, 11, 12 wins a year. And I'm like, it's not everybody can get into Notre Dame. It's a little northwestern. There are some, I think Brian Kelly, he does this urban, and this is how I've always watched coaches. You did this
Starting point is 00:41:09 very well. It's why a great coach. Notre Dame adapts at half. Now, in the NFL, everybody does. And you're not going to call out names, but I'll watch some college teams, and I'm like, they don't have the capability of changing. Notre Dame against Louisville was lost for the first 20 minutes. In the second half, that defense was unbelievable. On a clever offense, inside the game, coaches talking to coaches, what do they say
Starting point is 00:41:32 about Notre Dame's Brian Kelly? Here's why he is so respected among the coaching profession, myself included. at all levels. And I think a lot of times coaches get thrust into big-time jobs, and you never know. He's won at Grand Valley State. He's won of Central Michigan. He's one of Cincinnati. He's won in Notre Dame.
Starting point is 00:41:49 He does it right way. I'm always been a big fan. I'm friends with him. I think he's one of the top coaches in America, and I think he's done a great job. Here's the issue of Notre Dame deals with. They don't have a conference. So how do you evaluate if Notre Dame has a great year? There's only one way to get a real ring at Notre Dame, and that's when the national
Starting point is 00:42:05 title. It's tough. Yeah. And then we're in other schools, you know, Ohio State, we didn't win the national lineup, but you get a Big Ten championship range, so you can say this season was success. Yeah, if you beat Michigan, you win the Big Ten chance,
Starting point is 00:42:15 you still get some love. Right. And Notre Dame, there's only one way. And we all know is what was it. 88 was the last time that's happened. Yeah. You know, it's, uh, I like Nick Saban.
Starting point is 00:42:27 I've interviewed him. He's been very nice, been very kind to me. I like Nick. But sometimes, Nick, this is the thing that Nick drives me nuts on. I would tell Nick if he was sitting here. Nick's like, listen, we'll play anybody. I mean, we can't get games here. Nick.
Starting point is 00:42:41 When USC ran the world in college football, they were playing Ohio State in Columbus. They were playing Virginia Tech. They were playing. Nobody wants to play Ohio State. You had games in Oklahoma. Oklahoma came to you. Nick controls four games a year. He'll play you as long as he doesn't have to go north of Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:42:59 And I love Nick. But they're urban. You would go to your athletic director and say, you can't tell me they just scheduled Oklahoma. And they didn't say, Urban, you want to play Bob Stoops? You had at some point sign off and say, yeah, I want to play that game, didn't you? I did. And you usually sit with your athletic director in the schedule philosophy at Florida, as well as Ohio State was, see, you had the built-in non-conference with Florida State.
Starting point is 00:43:27 So we made that decision. We were not going to go play somewhere far away, et cetera. At Ohio State, Gene Smith and I, we had Cal. And, you know, who knew Cal was going to be down a little bit? You had Cal, you had Virginia Tech, you had Oklahoma, they have Oregon coming, and the schedule philosophy has played a big-time program home and home. And that's for your fans, that's for the college football playoffs, so you get the schedule strength.
Starting point is 00:43:52 So that's the involvement I had. Did you like playing those big games out of conference? I mean, I like it. Like to win. Yeah, I like to win. But I get it. You have to do that in our opinion. I think Alabama's changing, but that's way down the road when they're going to Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:44:07 and I think they're going home and home with Wisconsin. They're going now. Yeah. Because it's getting ripped. And by the way, it should be said this. With all the social media and the phones, you've got to give kids more. You can't play Citadel. Like the bottom line, in the south, it's hot.
Starting point is 00:44:23 62 to 3. You know, you put Wisconsin in the stadium and it's close, people stick. I mean, that's part of the game now. I think the SEC's kind of figuring it out. These kids, they don't want to watch blowouts. Yeah, but you have to figure, too. The SEC's getting two teams a year in the playoff. and Ohio State's not.
Starting point is 00:44:38 So does schedule strength really matter? That's the question of the, you know, does it matter? And should it matter more? Those are all debates that I remember Gene and I talking about it. And you can say schedule strength matters, but wait a minute, does it? You know, if Ohio State doesn't get into playoff or another school doesn't get into playoff and there's playing nine conference games and another big-time opponent and they don't get in, yet someone's playing eight conference games and then maybe not the strongest non-conference,
Starting point is 00:45:07 they do get two in. Those are all conversations you have to have. Finally, Urban before he came on the show today, LeVar Erington's a great player, former Nanyline Penn State, played in the NFL for eight years. So he's now a high school football coach. And right before Urban came on the show, we got a picture of this. LaVar's like, hey, coach, could you give me a little play? And here's Urban. But what did you give him as a play? Is it kind of a little? I can't tell you, but it's, I love Levar, man. He's a defensive one of the greatest players of all times sitting there getting ready to coach up offense. Did you give some high school kids got to face Urban Meyer's Statue of Liberty play.
Starting point is 00:45:41 It's a little, it's a nice, it's a nice perimeter run with a play action off of it. It's going to work. It's going to work. That's so unfair. Some DB out there, 17-year-old kids got Urban Meyer wizardry and he's just going to get faked out for a touchdown. Good seeing you, coach. Good seeing you. Last night, a blown call changed a game.
