Starting point is 00:00:00 This is an I-Heart podcast. Guaranteed Human. Last night, a blown call changed a game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode, we're cutting through the noise,
Starting point is 00:00:16 breaking down the biggest moments in sports and giving you the real story behind the headline. And we're going straight to the source, the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. And for more, follow Timbo Sliced Life 12 in the TikTok podcast network on TikTok.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy, not quite. Unhumor me with Robert Smigel and friends. Me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guest, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter. Where does your group perform? We do some retirement homes. Those people are starving for banter.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Listen to humor me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host Kear Games. This space is about black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit or armor? It signals to the world that you're not to be played. with and just because you have the capability that does not mean that you need to listen to learn the hard way on the iha radio app apple podcast or wherever you get your podcast what's up guys
Starting point is 00:01:41 this is clivert taylor the fourth and on my podcast the clivert show i'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff like being an internet famous referee we're in the middle of a game this linebacker this linebacker walks up to me he goes a ref my mom wants you to wave at her what Time out. Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, Rhett, my mama want you to weigh better. What? Hey, Ms. Parker.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Listen to the Clifford show on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for listening to the best of, heard podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday. From 12 to 3 Eastern, 9 to noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and FS1. Find your local station for the herd at Fox SportsRadio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeart radio app by searching herd. This is the best of the herd with Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports Radio.
Starting point is 00:02:42 What up? Welcome in. This is the herd wherever you may be. And however you may be listening to show, thanks so much for making this part of your day. I'm Doug Gottlie filling in for Colin Cowherd on Fox Sports One, Fox Sports Radio, and the IHeart radio app. Quick plug. I have a podcast. called All Ball on the Herd Podcast Network. There's a two-parter that we just dropped part two today with Raja Bell, former nemesis of Kobe Bryant. If I'm not going to tout my own stuff, nobody will.
Starting point is 00:03:15 But this is really, really, really good. Really good. Also, the Doug Gottlieb show, my show, I have. Three to Six Eastern, 12-3 Pacific on Fox Sports Radio. Our show. It's a different podcast. Tony Allen joined me yesterday. and he reacted to the death of Kobe Bryant,
Starting point is 00:03:34 and it was, I thought, spectacular stuff in that he felt like there's a conversation that he never had with Kobe that he wanted to have. Again, you can download that wherever you download podcast. Welcome in, we have a spectacular show for you today. Chris Broussard will join us, so too, or Rick Buecker. We'll talk a little NFL football, probably some Lakers with native Los Angeles,
Starting point is 00:03:54 T.J. Hushmanzado will join us. We got a lot to get to, including with Hush, should Joe Burrow, should Joe Burrow show up and play for the Bengals? Should he force his way out of Cincinnati before he's ever in Cincinnati? In other words, pull the L.A., pull the Eli Manning. Get to that during the show. But there's an old saying. Maybe it's a cliche.
Starting point is 00:04:16 And look, we're told in this business, don't be cliche, right? Don't be cliche, don't be cliche. But when the going gets tough, the tough do, in fact, get going, don't they? defense does in fact win championships. Now, we could sit here and go, well, Doug the Niners defense is the best defense in the league. They didn't win a championship. Yeah, but the chiefs don't come back and win that game. If Chris Jones doesn't bat down a couple balls, if they don't get four consecutive stops,
Starting point is 00:04:44 win down 10 in the Super Bowl. Defense does win championships, right? We rave about the Golden State Warriors and they're shooting. but during their championship runs, analytics would tell you they were, with the exception of one year, the best defensive teams in basketball. So cliches can be true. Matter of fact, they are generally true.
Starting point is 00:05:07 They're just overused expressions. Here's one. Necessity is the root of all invention. I screwed it up again. Did I screw it up again? Take two. Necessity is the mother of all invention. Same thing, really, right?
Starting point is 00:05:23 Finally nailed it, Gottlie. That's what happened last night with the Houston Rockets. Now, long term, we will discuss. But short term, they did the thing which I love. You know, we talk about whether your apps or desserts. I'm like, why do the appetizer? Just bring me two entrees. I'd rather have an additional entree than have a dessert.
Starting point is 00:05:52 And matter of fact, that's one of the reasons I like apps over desserts is, it's usually a mini-ontree. Why not just play your five best players at once? What happens if you're tallest players, six-foot-six? Like Daniel House. Okay. So the Houston Rockets tradeaway Clint Capella. And many predict gloom and doom.
Starting point is 00:06:16 And it is something that you kind of scratch your head at because, well, everybody has a rim protector in the NBA, right? Everyone who runs pick and roll and it's called spread game has a roller, has a rim protector, has somebody who defends the rim and rolls to the rim and finishes. And that's what Klim Kippella, though overpaid, was doing. I am a broadcaster, a former college basketball player, former professional player, and I've also been a coach, coached teams overseas. I've coached in the TBT, the basketball tournament. I've also coached youth teams. and when you get to a higher level of competition,
Starting point is 00:06:56 collegiate or pros, what happened last night is what I have implored to college basketball coaches throughout the country, which is, hey, small ball works. It works. Now, the reason it works is not always just because you make a bunch of shots. Oftentimes, it's because of the other team's reaction to your lineup.
Starting point is 00:07:20 And this actually starts at a very, very young age. Right, at a very young age. When you first start playing basketball, the biggest kid on the floor in rec basketball, usually parks himself in the lane or just off the lane, puts his hand up, and every coach, every parent says, throw him the ball. And he's closer to the hoop, so he tries to throw it off the backboard and throw it in. And if he doesn't make it, he gets the rebound because he's bigger than everybody else. And he then keeps throwing in there until he goes.
Starting point is 00:07:50 goes in. But a funny thing happened on the way to a win for the Lakers. See, look, I'm not a believer that all analytics tell every bit of the story. But analytics tell a portion
Starting point is 00:08:06 of this story, which is really, really important. Doug Gottliebend for Colinists to heard on Fox Sports Radio and Fox Sports One. The Lakers played right into the rocket's hands. See, what happens when you have a diminutive lineup and you have LeBron James, where you have Anthony Davis, as you say,
Starting point is 00:08:24 get down there, post up, we'll throw you the ball. Because that's what we've been taught for the last 30, 40, 50 years, right? It's a mismatch. When I play professional basketball, if I was caught on a big guy, you would immediately hear the bigger players say, mouse in the house, or just mouse, I got a little guy, give me the ball. And they'd give you the ball, and you felt like that was a sure too.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Analytics tell us a completely different story. They tell us that shot in the post is actually an inefficient shot. If you like numbers, 0.777 is a post-up shot in the NBA. Guys practice it less. And even when they become, you know, lights out scores like Anthony Davis, all basketball players will tell you, you're allowed as a smaller player generally to be more physical, which makes a higher percentage shot a little bit lower percentage.
Starting point is 00:09:18 But here's what analytics doesn't tell you. It doesn't just hurt you in the first shot. it hurts you because you stop running your offense. You know that thing that you've been working on since the beginning of training camp, all those sets, all those ball screens. LeBron James' best attribute is not as a post player. It's playing what's called downhill, going towards the basket. But when you're throwing it into a mismatch in the post, that goes away.
Starting point is 00:09:42 It just does. Everybody stands and stops, and it becomes 1990s NBA basketball, throw it to Pat Ewing, and he goes to work, and if you double team, he kicks out for a three. The other part it hurts you on is your ability to rebound the basketball. You would think that because you're bigger than the other team, well, you can just crash the glass and rebound. And maybe to a certain extent you can.
Starting point is 00:10:03 But one, the defense knows that, so they'll box out more. Two, when you have a guy at the post, I want you to picture this like Anthony Davis, he catches the ball. He has a defender on him. He shoots the basketball or somebody else shoots the basketball. There's a man between him and the basket. It makes it easier to box out, as opposed to, when you're running screen and roll and somebody shoots,
Starting point is 00:10:24 that same big guy has a running start who's nearly impossible to box out. You're making yourself easier to defend, you're shooting less efficient shots, you're getting out of your offense, and you're easier to box out. And oh yeah, by the way, because you have a size advantage on the boards,
Starting point is 00:10:39 generally guys crash the boards more. What happens when you do that? The back ends open. And now the other team can transition better. Look, the Houston Rockets played with a center last night. his name is Russell Westbrook Russell Westbrook you thought he was a point guard
Starting point is 00:10:58 no no no all you have to have is one what's called a clogger one guy doesn't shoot that well that's okay one two point shooter the rest are three point shooters nobody's in the lane it makes you really hard to defend and instead of having Clint Capella
Starting point is 00:11:14 and Russell Westbrook two cloggers if you will two guys who clog up the lane who can help on James Hardin who can help on different drives who can help rebounding now there's no help if you help he kicks off they shoot at three yes the game plan is to expose your mismatch and to beat you off the dribble and to find your big guy and beat him like they beat Kyle kuzma last night your weak defender sure on offense but it actually takes you out of your offense at your own end don't believe me take a listen to frank bogul he's the head coach of the lakers as to what went wrong at staples last night with the advantage you had with sizes
Starting point is 00:11:53 It seemed like your team was trying to force the ball a little bit too much to the post, maybe turning the ball over a little bit. Would that be accurate? Probably the understatement of the year. Yeah, we were terrible with just like you said, trying to force it, force-feed it inside, you know, getting our spacing right against, you know, their post-frontals and, you know, just not reading the weak side. You know, I mean, that's where most of our turnovers came.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And it disrupted our flow. Disrupt your flow. All that stuff, all the plays you practice, they all go out to, window because he's like, we got a mismatch. That was from Spectrum SportsNet. After the game, Frank Vogel going, that's the understatement of the year. It actually screwed us up on offense that we had a
Starting point is 00:12:33 size advantage every time down the court and we tried to take advantage of it. Played it in their hands. Meanwhile, when you play small, your shooting percentage is better, your turnover's a lower, your three point percentage is better. And you know, most importantly, you know what your weakness is, so
Starting point is 00:12:49 it's easier to at least know how they're going to attack you. necessity is the mother of all invention and the Houston rockets were stuck they were stuck right they couldn't play any other way and be they try with clincapella you know they they've tried with stretch bigs they've tried all this different Chris Paul Russell Westbrook it wasn't working you know what the hell with it let's just instead of having a small ball lineup at the end of the game like the warriors who had their death lineup what if we did it the entire game Dr. Oz had a New Year's resolution for America.
Starting point is 00:13:28 You guys know who Dr. Oz is like America's doctor? And he said to stop eating breakfast. Stop eating breakfast. And you're sitting there and you've got your frosted flakes and you're looking up and you're like Gottlieb one, you're not cowherd and two. I like frosted flakes. Why do I have to stop eating them? Well, I was taught as a kid that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Starting point is 00:13:51 in addition to breakfast foods generally being filled with carbs and sugar, right, which is even more carbs, right? Because, I mean, think about breakfast food, right? Between cereal, which is carbs or pancakes or waffles or whatever. Sure, you can do what Shannon Sharp does if you have discipline. He eats egg whites and oatmeal every day for 20 years. Ask him, it's amazing, right? But most people don't.
Starting point is 00:14:16 The whole breakfast is the most important meal of the day. That was from a breakfast company. that that was from a breakfast company. You were sold a bail of goods, just like the whole idea of, hey, we got to throw it to the big guy. Mismatch. Yeah, well, it's actually better for you to not eat breakfast
Starting point is 00:14:35 and to get right to the substantial meals of the day if you want to do the fasting thing or eat quality foods. You can eat a salad for breakfast. You can eat chicken for breakfast. That's fine. Breakfast is not, breakfast foods are not the most important meal of the day.
Starting point is 00:14:50 You actually don't need a salad. satisfy your hunger. And when you're super hungry coming off asleep, the first thing you do is put sugar in your system. It actually is worse than not eating. That's the same thing as what you've always been taught about basketball, which is when you have a mismatch, forget everything else, throw it inside. Mouse in the house. Don't believe me? The Lakers who were trying to show off for Darren Collison, who was on like a recruiting visit last night, end up kind of embarrassing themselves by getting completely out of sorts because they're like, hey, their tallest guy is 6-6, and we got Anthony Davis and LeBron James.
Starting point is 00:15:29 Oops. This show, other shows, we have a tendency to kill analytics. Last night was a win. Last night was a win. Starting point is 00:19:18 Yesterday was the NBA's trade deadline. It came. It went, and there were thoughts that Andre Goddala would be the missing. piece for maybe a team like the Lakers or maybe a team like the Clippers. Obviously the Lakers, Rob Polinkas is his former agent and people thought he might end up there. Of course, the Memphis Grizzlies held on to his rights. He refused to play for the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies came out on Twitter and went at him.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Dylan Brooks actually got a contract extension, I think because he's a better than they thought player, but also maybe because he defended the honor of Memphis. Anyway, the Miami Heat end up via a trade landing on Andre Godala. Oh, and here's the kicker. They gave a contract extension. Now, you will hear people around the NBA say, wow, Andrew Godala, NBA, NBA finals MVP on the Miami Heat. This is the missing piece.
Starting point is 00:20:13 What a great trade. Now they're on the same tier as the bucks, elevates them above the Raptors and the Boston Celtics, puts them right there head, you know, face to face. the first thing is we cannot take what we see in the regular season to be true. Right? Go and look at the team that had the best record in the Eastern Conference in the regular season of the past five to ten years, five to ten years.
Starting point is 00:20:45 And you will see that very, very rarely does that team actually get to the NBA finals, nor are they the favorite to get to the NBA finals. And Miami specifically this year, because they have a younger energetic team because Jimmy Butler's trying to prove he's worth this max contract. Miami's been way better than expected. Keep in mind that Miami has this one thing. They're basically like Hawaii in basketball, right? Like, Hawaii, a lot of times they'll get a team on the way out to the Maui
Starting point is 00:21:16 invitational and they'll stop on Honolulu. They'll play a game and they'll lose. Because that team is thinking about the beach. That team just got off the plane. That team's got no dead leg. you know, they've been drinking papaya juice for the first time in their lives. Miami,
Starting point is 00:21:33 any of us, anyone in broadcasting knows this, the South Beach flu is real, right? Like, we're freaking out, rightfully, so I think about this coronavirus, but I can tell you that most media members are still recovering and our immune systems are down from the South Beach flu. And the South Beach flu is just basically,
Starting point is 00:21:53 like you feel like you're in a foreign country. I think there's really two cities in the United States where you feel like you're in a foreign country. One is Seattle, where you do feel like you're in kind of Canada, and then one is Miami, where you feel like you're in central to South America, right? You feel like you could be in Argentina or in Brazil, you know, there's just a different sensibility. And heck, you know, it's very easy and normal to go out to dinner at 10 o'clock. clubs are open super late it's just different and you take philadelphia they go down there the other day and they get stumped well they had a day off between orlando and miami south beach flu you get to the playoffs and teams aren't going out teams are taking you seriously and suddenly Miami comes back to reality
Starting point is 00:22:42 but here's the bigger thing it wasn't just that they traded for iguadala that's a big thing yes the lakers wanted iguadala but they wanted him on the buyout market they want him for like a million or two million. They want him for nothing. Now he's going to make 30 million over the next two years. I know you look at Andre Godal and you think, okay, well, he was an all-star and then he was a finals MVP. During his time with the Warriors, now he averaged fewer points every year, five points a game last year. Never averaged double digits. He hasn't played over 30 minutes a game in the last five years. If you remember back two years ago when they survived the Houston Rockets, one of the reasons they struggled with the Houston Rockets was he was hurt.
Starting point is 00:23:31 And then he got hurt again in the NBA finals. He was leaking oil. He was that car you knew was once upon a time, a beautiful car, a great, an all-star caliber car, that you could only drive on weekends. And if you pay a guy 15 million a year for two years, that's not a weekend car. That's an everyday car.
Starting point is 00:23:52 Andro Gaudela, in his own words last May, when asked about being hurt, being injured, he said, just a lot of minutes in overuse. I'm old. Igwadala said after practice, it just flared up real quick. But we have a good training staff. When you've been playing for five long seasons, it's bound to come up. It's rare that you see it. It's hard for it to be realized.
Starting point is 00:24:14 My career is almost over anyway, so I really don't care. This is last May, he said, career is almost. Be like, well, he took the first half of the season off, so he's fine. Like, no, that's not the way it works. You have a pair of radials, right? Some tires. And they generally last, you know, 30,000 miles. And you get to like 29,000 miles and they're balding. And you don't drive the car for six months. The radials don't repair themselves. Like, that's not the way it actually works. And your body is the same. It actually becomes harder, not easier. This reminds me like Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Do you guys remember
Starting point is 00:24:54 the problem of Ferris Bueller's Day Off at the end of the movie? You guys remember what happened? Cameron's dad had this incredible Porsche, right? And he knew how many miles are on it. And Ferris is like, don't worry, we're just going to drive it to the city and back. Spoiler alert, by the way, if you haven't seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off. You know, they drive it to some parking garage and the guy's like, no problem.
Starting point is 00:25:14 Then he drives the car all over Chicago. You get it back. He's got so many miles. No problem. We'll just put it in reverse. Yet it doesn't work that way. That's how your body's odometer is as well. The idea that Andre Iguodal is like Ponce de Leon going to find the fountain of youth somewhere in Miami is laughable. Congratulations to Andre Godala, right? Like, I don't hate the player.
Starting point is 00:25:40 I hate the game. Unless he's going to that same clinic, all those baseball players went to, which I don't think Andre Godala is, oh, he just got over a month. Now only do you want me, but you'll go. give me in another year guaranteed money? Sure, I'll show up. Fine. You know, I only play about 20 minutes a game. And oh yeah, by the way, I play center or power forward now. That's what he did with the Golden State Warriors. Good luck with that. The heat got so boondoggled, got so desperate thinking they were a championship team. They end up screwing the whole thing up and
Starting point is 00:26:13 giving a guy an extra year who, based on his own admission, was done last year. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays at noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific. Look, inside the NBA is a great show. It's a great show for a myriad of reasons, mostly because Charles Barkley. Charles Barkley is a former Philadelphia 76ers. Sixers get blown out. That wasn't blown out. They did make it competitive, at least, with the Milwaukee bucks. Get beat by the Milwaukee Bucks, and here's Chuck on the Sixers. I think they are the softest, mentally weakest team that had a bunch of talent. They are the Cleveland Browns of the NBA.
Starting point is 00:26:52 They got a lot of talent. Browns? And they talk, they talk. And that's it. The difference between Janice and Embedde is force. Yonis is playing with force and Embedd is playing S.O.F. Caput. Yeah, I mean, like this is kind of classic shack.
Starting point is 00:27:12 Look, M.B. did not play well. They're different players. Look, I just think the deal is this. Ben Simmons, who I was on this show and I said, I believed he was the most talented one and done that we'd ever had in college basketball. Now, what happens when you say talented is people think that talent is all that matters, that means you'll be the best. Obviously, Kevin Durant had an incredible year at Texas scoring-wise, but his body wasn't ready yet.
Starting point is 00:27:47 He had a lot of his game to develop at the defensive end. Simmons who kind of built his game to model, among other people, Lamar Odom, right? People think that he wanted to be LeBron. There was some LeBron. There was some magic, but there was a lot of Lamar Odom. Simmons is a remarkable town. He's a rookie of the year.
Starting point is 00:28:07 The problem with Simmons is, is he a winning basketball player? Does he care more about winning than anything else? Obviously, his jump shooting has not improved. like he had one three and people when Twitter goes crazy, right? He has not, and I'm not saying he doesn't work, but he has not put in the work to make himself the type of shooter you have to be in the NBA. And look, this is coming from somebody who, if you want to know why I didn't make it,
Starting point is 00:28:38 wasn't because I was short. That doesn't help. It was because it couldn't shoot. And it's even more important now. And if he was, if he was on the bucks, I actually think he'd be better off because, I mean, look, Janice is not a great shooter. Now, he'll shoot threes, even though he doesn't shoot a great percentage and he's improved. But what they do is they put four shooters on the court with him, so there's nobody in the lane.
Starting point is 00:29:08 You can't do that with Embed who's trying to post up. And then Ben Simmons, who's got to drive to the basket. They're a bad fit. And they're also a bad fit in terms of personalities. right? Ben Simmons wants to be Hollywood. Joel Embed wants to be everybody's best friend and a Joker and silly and it just doesn't work. Like, look, for years, Ben Simmons wasn't on the Australian national team. There was just this something about him that other dudes didn't dig.
Starting point is 00:29:36 It wasn't that they don't like his talent, like his talent. But there's something about that he didn't do, he wasn't a little things guy. Like, remember, if you think of the Australian national team, you think of guys like Matthew Delavadova, who have a fraction of the God-given talent of a Ben Simmons. But they play incredibly hard. All right? They're incredibly tough. They make shots.
Starting point is 00:30:02 And they feel better when others are succeeding. Like, that's not Simmons. You can tell me he's all about winning all you want, but you follow him on Instagram. It ain't about winning. It's glam shots every day in front of a car, in front of a plane, from a tiger. you want to know why that's why i don't care about you like what is the lebron james saying keep the main thing the main thing right keep the main thing the main thing hey dude you want making this league getting a gym and stay in a gym getting a gym and stay in a gym and i actually think
Starting point is 00:30:41 part of his turning down jump shots that are wide open is smart you know like don't get goaded into a shot you're not coming but you got to what is your game shot what can you make Because you're hurting the team by not taking those shots, believe it or not. Like, you actually have to coach him the opposite of everybody else. Everybody else, right, when they take bad shots, you take him out. For him, when he turns down a good shot, you got to take him out. You're open. You have to shoot the ball.
Starting point is 00:31:11 He is killing the 76ers by forget his lack of makes, his lack of takes. Dang it! You got to take it. And if you don't, you got to come out. I think some of that criticism is on the nose from Chuck. I don't know. Shack, everybody's soft compared to Shaq. This is the old player.
Starting point is 00:31:31 Everybody's soft. League used to be tougher. He's not wrong. A lot of that's the officiating. But Joel Embed continues to refine his talent. He had a bad night last night. And I do think that Embed has some holes in his game, but it feels like he continues to shore them up.
Starting point is 00:31:51 If you combine the two players, this just feels like a bad fit. We were talking about marriage. This is one where they're walking down the aisle and somebody's like, six months. Right? Six months. I give it six months. Here we are a couple years in and we're postponing the inevitable. That's what we're doing.
Starting point is 00:32:10 One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart radio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth. Are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.

Starting point is 00:34:12 This is Cliver Taylor the Fourth. And on my podcast, The Cliverts Show, I'm bringing you conversations about all kinds of stuff. like being an internet famous referee. We're in the middle of a game. This linebacker, this linebacker walks up to me, he goes, hey, ref, my mom wants you to wave at her. What? Time out.
Starting point is 00:34:32 Quarterback on office blue with 42. Hey, rep, my mama want you to wave at her. What? Where's she at? Hey, Miss Parker. Listen to the Clippers show on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:34:51 Hey, I'm Joe Rodano. You might know me as that loud guy who yells out, help on the internet. Help! Somebody! Please! But there's so much more to me than me. I'm an actor.
Starting point is 00:35:01 I'm a comedian. And recently, I've become quite the helper myself. And on my new podcast, hope from a hypocrite, I'll be changing lives, helping people in need with my sage advice and thoughtful solutions. Syke, I'm a comedian.
Starting point is 00:35:16 I'm not qualified to give good advice. Join me and my comedian friends as we riff, rant, recommend some of the most legally dubious advice known to man. If I'm calling you, even if you're on your phone, let it ring twice. One ring is too scary. Oh, cream a chicken suit. Hey, cream. Cream a chicken suit.
Starting point is 00:35:37 This is Help from a Hypocrite, the worst advice from the dumbest people you know. Listen to Help from Hypocrat as part of the Mike Cultura podcast network available on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. He's a former pro bowler in the National Football League. He's T.J. Hushman Zaddy. You'll see him on speak for yourself a little bit later. You always see him on Fox Sports One.
Starting point is 00:36:02 Hush, I want to ask you, I think you were on yesterday. We on yesterday with Bucky Brooks when he said, I did you? No, I was not. Okay, let me play for you what he said about Tom Brady being a system quarterback. Gotcha. He's a system quarterback who has played in a great. that has produced a lot of winning. Because that same system helped Matt Castle go 11 and 5
Starting point is 00:36:23 when Tom Brady wasn't available to the knee. Tom Brady at this stage of his career, he needs the system more than ever. Like if we're talking about Michael Jordan, the one thing you can never question about Michael Jordan, he was a transcendent player. He was transcendent in college. He was transcended from the time he stepped into the league.
Starting point is 00:36:40 We can never say that Tom Brady was transcended coming into the league. It took Jordan a while to win a championship. Bucking he's wrong. I know he's wrong. He's wrong. He's wrong. Yeah, Bucky's cool. He's just wrong.
Starting point is 00:36:53 Yeah, right? Like, Jordan didn't win until they ran the triangle. That's a system. Whereas Brady, when he first got to league, he was more facilitator, right? Then he became the most, they had the most dynamic offense in the NFL. Then everything was dink and dunk short underneath crossing stuff, you know, Welker. And then they become a power running team and they'd find Gronk on a mismatch, right? Like those are-
Starting point is 00:37:11 But every quarterback is a system quarterback. Good coaching finds what fits you well. invest what they every quarterback is a system quarterback some are more the system like i am the system and that's what brady is he bucky's wrong he's been saying this all year and next year we're really going to find out because brady won't be there so we'll find out but he won't be there no no percent chance zero percent chance zero percent where does he go there's a few teams i'll give you more than a few okay um where does he go i don't No, there's too many to decipher and choose from.
Starting point is 00:37:51 You said zero percent chance. Zero. I would go one percent. I would go one percent. Zero percent. Door closed. Door closed. Okay.
Starting point is 00:37:59 I could look at the chargers. Okay. Obviously the chargers in Tennessee that's been talked about. I believe he wants to go to warm weather. So then I have to throw in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints. Those, the Dallas Cowboys, if they can't work anything out with Dak, If I had to say which one, it would be one of the three between Tampa Bay, San Diego, Tennessee. Okay, it's L.A. now, but I know what you mean with it. Okay, so can I counterpoint to you?
Starting point is 00:38:27 Yeah. He ain't going to Tampa. He ain't going to Tennessee. You don't think so? No. Okay. No, I don't think. Jazeel may be Nashville. She ain't going to Tampa, dude. I'm telling you. Okay. I get it. I mean. And, and he wants AB to come with him. Antonio Brown? Yeah. Look, Antonio Brown, nobody's stopping Antonio Brown from being in the NFL more than Antonio Brown. Yeah, but he respects Brady. If you notice when he got released him and Brady to look. But he doesn't respect anybody else.
Starting point is 00:38:54 But he respects Brady enough enough to where, enough to where, and I'll even throw the Raiders in there with Brady as well. But he respects Brady enough to where he won't disappoint him. He doesn't want to disappoint. Yes, it's, listen to me. Trust me. Okay, I trust your intel and your insight. And you know, I love you as much as any,
Starting point is 00:39:17 man loves another man that I have no relationship with, right? But, bro, this is not a Tom Brady decision, Antonio Brown. This is a Roger Goodell decision. Oh, no, no, granted, all that works itself out and he doesn't do... He doesn't do anything from... You see he's on his make-nice parade right now. For a day. I'm apologizing.
Starting point is 00:39:41 It's been about a week. It's been about a week. It's been about a week without... It's been about a week. Okay, I just, I don't see him going, like the whole Chargers thing. Do you think Shane Steichen, who's their offensive coordinator, he's going to, Brady's been like, yeah, I'm going to work with Shane Steichen, who I don't know from Adam, and with that offensive line.
Starting point is 00:40:00 Do I think they have great skill position players? They do. They have maybe the best skill position players, including the chiefs of any team in the NFL. But I don't see Brady go in there. And L.A. makes them, L.A. and Vegas make the most sense. Like, he's a megastar. He's about winning. You're not going to Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:40:15 See? You got to look at the teams that they have to plan their division. If you go to the Chargers, you're playing the Chiefs and you're playing the Broncos who has a really good defense. Oh, and you're going to play the Raiders who is up and coming. So you've got to look at the division that he's going to be in. And the division he just left where the path of least resistance in the AFCEs, he's looking at that. Okay, so what do you think about the Dac Prescott contract? It's going to be complicated.
Starting point is 00:40:44 that obviously it's been complicated. I'm not making him the highest paid quarterback in the league. I'm not paying him more than Russell Wilson. I'm not paying him more than Aaron Rogers. The Jared Golf Carson Wynch range, I could see that. He's played better than him, but I can argue, Jared Golf took his team to the Super Bowl, and Dag Prescott had a better roster.
Starting point is 00:41:05 But I can see giving him 33, 34 max a year. I'm not going above that. I wouldn't either. Look, I think he's fine. I think he's good enough to win with and you can get stability with him. And I just, he can't give him. The problem is that Jerry's going to give in at some level because Jerry always gives in, doesn't he? Man, it's been a while.
Starting point is 00:41:27 He hasn't given in yet. Hope maybe Stephen is talking some sense into him and saying, listen, this is what it has to be. I think it's, he's talking sense into Stephen. Stephen is like, he's okay. He can't, he doesn't win his big games on his own. He's convincing Stephen, let's give him a little more. Yes. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:42 I think that's the way that, that dynamic works. I believe as long as they stay under 35, 34, 35, that's the smart thing to do. But for some reason in the NFL, it's, oh, the last quarterback that got paid, got 35 million. I have to leapfrog them. Not if you're not better than him. Kyle Shanahan was talking about Jimmy Garoppolo yesterday. I think we have that sound. This is Kyle Shanahan when asked, you know, he was, people have said, like, is Jimmy Garapolo the problem?
Starting point is 00:42:11 Is that a fix? He's 28 years old. but that was only his first season in the NFL. Here's Kyle Shanahan talking about his quarterback. I think Jimmy's one of the main reasons we got to the Super Bowl. I think he overcame a lot. This was his first year in his career going through an entire NFL season. So, I mean, he still doesn't have as many starts and stuff as Baker Mayfield.
Starting point is 00:42:33 So I think he had a hell of the first year, truly playing the position for him to be like that and to not let the pressure get to him and to improve as a year it went. I think says a ton about Jimmy and I can't tell you how much I'd love coaching the guy as a player and as a person I share. You buy that. Some of it. I just, I go back to
Starting point is 00:42:55 the second quarter. Like, you don't call a timeout. This is the Super Bowl. And then you say, well, if they stop us and give their quarterback the ball, oh, yeah, you trust their quarterback is going to go down the field against you guys would have against a better defense. But you don't trust your quarterback will go down the field
Starting point is 00:43:11 against their defense. There's an expression I use. I used it with Colin the other day. I use it all the time. It's you can't fool players. And whether it's you as a player, but more than anything, all those Niners are sitting there on the sideline. And they're like, what? We're going to.
Starting point is 00:43:25 It was the week before. You're killing the Packers. You're killing them. Let him throw. Just, no, you know, just getting 15 pass attempts because he's walking from this game saying, wow, I haven't thrown the ball at all. Like, I'm getting kind of stiff.
Starting point is 00:43:41 Like, you let him throw the ball eight times. in the game that you had won. That right there showed Jimmy G. And the rest of the team, we don't really trust him like we should. And then you back it up with end of the first half. That just reinforces everything that they thought going into the game. That said, man, they got a 10-point lead.
Starting point is 00:44:03 Second down, clearly should have checked out of a run. He doesn't. Third down, like I get Chris Jones deflected a couple, but he didn't even see, you know, arguably the best or second best George Kill tight end wide open over the middle. He was so sure. I'll give him a pass on that because a lot of people don't know. Well, a lot of people do know.
Starting point is 00:44:24 The quarterback reeds are defined. So if it's a two high or one high look, Kittle probably because of the defense that the chiefs played wasn't even part of the read. He just so happened to pop open. It could have been the coverage dictated. I'm working this side of the field. I'm not even looking at Kittle. That could have been the case.
Starting point is 00:44:41 So I'll give him a pass on that one. What about Emmanuel Sanders? He's open. He just missed him. He missed the throw. But he didn't, it wasn't like he missed by this much. He missed it. That was a just a bit outside.
Starting point is 00:44:52 He missed him bad. And he missed him long, whereas he missed him short. Maybe you get past interference. If you miss him short, this day and age, it's going to be passing. Even to pass the kid. I'm a receiver.
Starting point is 00:45:03 I didn't think that was PI just before halftime. I didn't think that was PI. No, I did not as well. So he got some bad luck, but clearly Garapolo let that help. let that one get away. And then I think, I thought then when they're down four, they only ran the football once on that drive. And it was the first down. They get 17 yards. Then they stopped running the football. It's like, hey, now they're expecting the past. You should run the football again.
Starting point is 00:45:25 The game plan was a little odd considering you let him throw it eight times a week prior. We ran a ball down their throat. You were running a ball very effectively in the Super Bowl. And in a one possession game, you kind of get away from it. And so a lot of things didn't make sense. The good thing about it is they're young and hopefully they will learn from this but Kyle Shanahan he's going to have to write the ship because it's been twice you've done it two times you play with Carson Carson Palmer came out
Starting point is 00:45:52 and said if he was Burrow he wouldn't he wouldn't want to play if he wouldn't play for the Bengals there have been others that have said that his dad said I don't know where people are getting that from he's just excited to be one of the top picks but didn't say he absolutely wants to be a Bengal you've lived that life
Starting point is 00:46:08 granted not recently with the Bengals but you guys are pretty good would you tell Joe Burrow to make them trade that pick? I'm not telling Joe Burrow anything. It's you and your dad's a coach. You grew up in Ohio. You have representation. Y'all come to a conclusion that you think fits you and you live with it.
Starting point is 00:46:31 If I'm the Bengals personally, I'm going to trade the pick because I can get more picks and it will make my team better. if I can get Herbert or Tua, I'm okay with that as well. You're speaking sensibly. You know because you played and lived as a Bengals. The Bengals aren't going to trade the pig. Correct.
Starting point is 00:46:48 The Bengals are going to take him. And if you don't want to play, right? So now it becomes like Joe Burrow. Do you sit? No. No, you don't sit. Joe Burrow didn't play for two years at Ohio State. Three years.
Starting point is 00:47:00 He transfers. He graduates. And he finally gets a chance to play. He's confident enough to say, I believe I can turn. turn this thing around. Whether that's true or not, he has that type of confidence. I know the Bengals aren't going to trade the pick, and he'll know ahead of time. If he says we don't want to play there, behind the scenes, they'll say, oh, we're drafting you anyway. Do you have Intel? You got
Starting point is 00:47:21 intel on Brady. You got intel on Darren Collison if you sign that the Lakers? I hope he does, man. We need some help, man. How can he sit there next to Jeannie Bus and not do like the commitment thing with the hat or something? It's a done deal, man. It's got to be a wrap. Last night, a blown call changed the game.
